Medical/Health Management and Clinical Assistant/Specialist

Part assistant and part office manager, medical health management and clinical assistant specialists are the people who keep medical offices running smoothly. They handle billing, coding, and reception, while also assisting medical staff with routine medical tasks: measuring vital signs, changing patients' dressings, and assisting the doctor or other medical staff with simple procedures. Although each program is different, you can expect your college curriculum to focus on the core subjects you will need to do your job. Subjects that you will study as a medical health management and clinical assistant specialist include pharmacology, phlebotomy, records management, medical law, and billing and coding. You may also have the opportunity to complete an internship for hands-on experience. It is recommended that students join the American Association of Medical Assistants organization before graduation. The AAMA has resources regarding the certification tests as well as various educational, professional, and networking resources for the up-and-coming and established medical health management and clinical assistant specialist professional. Once you complete your studies, you will have the opportunity to take the Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) test. Although certification is not always mandatory, many employers prefer candidates who are certified.
