Categories Comments Tips for prospective students ThisIs the Best ARt school on the west coast if not the best. I've seen runway models wearing clothes from the Academy of arts and I find that funny because the runway is all the way in New York City.
Bang for the buck THis school is one of, if not,the most expesive art schools of the west coast. I've seen the size of the school and the quality, however Im not so sure if all that money is nessessary. Regaurdless, I still have this school on my top favored.
Will enjoy being here I love the location of this school. Its soclose to home; its only a B.A.R.T ride away. I like the city life. It gives me a very diffrent environment to work around with once I attend this school.
Will learn a lot I've heard from many employees that Many many students came to this school with little to no drawing skills. Now that I have seen their work, I wouldnt beleive such a fact. This school is a 100% satisfier when it come to quality.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students AAU is great for students at any level, but beginners are fortunate to have a curriculum made for even those who know nothing about the field and teach real knowledge and technique. AAU has an open acceptance, they take in anyone who applies. However, the courses are rigorous and only those willing to put in the time and effort will see quality results and progress. Expect to be surrounded by intimidating artists and to work hard to get your grade. You’ll see an amazing difference in your work habits and art skill after just one semester.
Tips for prospective students -Housing is extremely helpful. You don't have to worry about paying rent, difficult neighbors, etc. You meet more people through the dorms and you have an all-you-can-eat style meal plan ready for you, as well as the academy's student shuttle. However, if you're having a hard time already affording tuition, I suggest finding a living space or apartment early on before coming to the city. Start looking up places & prices now, as well as potential roommates. Make appointments to see places at least 2 months in advance, every student will be looking and you don't want to end up with a place overpriced that you don't like. -If you are an incoming freshman ask about submitting your portfolio to get a grant, that's about the only monetary assistance you'll get from the school. Inquire too about working on campus. There are positions available in the cafes, as security, as nude sketch or fashion models, in Utrecht, as lab assistants, and as RA's for the dorms. The academy pays good for their student workers, but landing one of the jobs is highly competitive. -Look up local craft and art stores for supplies, the school's art store, Utrecht, can get pretty pricey (though they do offer ready made packs with all the supplies needed for each class). -Manage your time well but don't forget to have a social life. I've seen both extremes at AAU and neither are healthy. There's so much to do and explore at AAU and in the city. Public transportation is convenient, take some friends and go around the bay. Taking advantage of the area will really make the whole experience a good one, and it's a good break from all the school work.
Bang for the buck You get what you pay for - quality courses, experienced instructors (still working in the field), good facilities - but as a private art school AAU is definitely expensive. Unless you can already afford it, paying the academy's tuition is tough. Use your high school or previous college time to build up your portfolio and activities, then just apply to every grant and scholarship you qualify for. It's a lot of hard work but you have to do what's necessary and once you get to AAU it's worth it.
Did enjoy being here The academy is not for everyone, primarily because of the setting. I, however, enjoyed going to school at AAU and I've got to say it was the most exciting time of my life. The first year undergraduate dorms are not nearly as nice as the continuing or graduate dorms (which are extremely nice, like hotels or apartments) but they were comfortable and enabled me to enjoy a very active social life. The facilities were conducive to my education and the instructors were friendly and professional. I loved the classes, my classmates, the food, my room, my roommates, the city, everything. Not everyone will have as good an experience as I did, but the school is grade A quality and offers a good education in a creative backdrop.
Did learn a lot Within a 4 month span, I learned more than I possibly could have imagined. Topics and programs addressed at other schools are covered from day one at AAU. I learned enough in a year to start doing my own freelance work. Not only did I learn a lot in my own field, but I got to handle slr's and old super 8 cameras, experiment in traditional, 2d, and 3d animating, improve my sketching and sculpting, and learn my way around various design programs.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students This school is great for students who actually want to become a better artist and plan to be in the art field. Students attending this school should be able to handle a heavy workload and enjoy challenges.
Tips for prospective students My advice for prospective students is to be aware that the classes are extremely rigorous. You will not receive an A your first year except for, perhaps, a liberal arts class. I also highly discourage the meal plan, its a ripoff and the cafeteria food is pretty terrible.
Bang for the buck This college is not the one of the cheapest. Tuition does, however, cover the cost of school shuttles, the school gyms, workout classes (yoga, pilates, etc.) workshops, and most school events.
Am enjoying being here It's hard not to have fun in San Francisco. There are always events going on, some of which are school sponsored. I've met a lot of really good friends by staying in the dorms and its rare for me to have a boring night.
Am learning a lot All of the teachers here are currently very successful in the field they are teaching, so they know what they are talking about. The teachers are also a great resource for networking and landing a job out of college. The classes are hard, but if you put in the effort, you will learn a lot.

Categories Comments Tips for prospective students Don't go into this school thinking it will be an easy ride. This is a tough program and the workload is not easy. Be ready to work your tail off, after all you get out what you put in.
Bang for the buck It is pricey, but there were special programs that I was not even aware of when I signed up for class, like a coach to help me the first year. Her guidance was worth the weight in gold!
Am enjoying being here I can't tell you about the campus life and such because I am an online student, but this is a great school.
Am learning a lot I am only first year but I can tell you I am ten times the artist I was before starting this program.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students This school is for anyone at all with a passion for art. All skill levels are welcome. This school is for everyone!
Tips for prospective students The work is demanding so don't take it lightly. This is no easy A school. Also, always ask questions if you need too. There is no excuse for failing because you don't understand the material when there are so many available people around to support and help you on your way.
Bang for the buck This is an expensive school. However, seeing the work past classes have done, how much i am learning, resource's and support that is available to me.....this school is well worth it! You will perfect your skills in art and form bonds with valuable contacts in the industry.
Am enjoying being here Everyone is supportive and fun to work with. The classes are far from boring and the people (including some instructors) are real characters!
Am learning a lot My classes spare no detail when it comes to learning. My instructors are willing to help and make sure i understand the material fully. As an online student, each class has mentor that helps and supports in any way possible. There are students with talents surpassing mine and ones that have hardly ever drawn before. We can all interact and learn from each other easily.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students It won't matter if you never have drawn and want to begin, here they will help you get to where to need to be and believe me you will go from no drawing skills to someone saying WOW, your artwork is great, you must have been drawing since you were little.
Tips for prospective students What you future students can do is number one rule, keep your head in the game, I have seen how not some but many students slack off by doing goof offs and end up wasting the education and money. Second rule: aim and shoot always for the best grade in the class, don't matter how big the homework is or the assignment, finish it on time and make it a clean job. And third rule is: don't get frustrated and stressed when things don't go how they are supposed to go. If you need help don't ever hesitate on asking for aid by your professors or friends that you maid here, it don't matter if it's a school problem or personal problem. People here in the academy also have their problems just like anyone, just because they are here won't mean they have everything perfect. Trying to make it alone is heavy but that weight vanishes when there is someone there so help you.
Bang for the buck Honestly this is not a cheap school, it is expensive like many other schools here in California but you get what you pay, it is at a decent price because other universities that i have searched are more expensive than the academy, and the knowledge that one acquires here will help you get to where yo need to be. Just keep on working with your artwork and sooner or later a company from the industry will like your work and will want you to hire you.
Am enjoying being here The academy has lots of student recreation classes that can be attended like self defense, judo, aikido, weight training, yoga, pilates, etc. There is also open basketball courts where you can practice your shooting or have a game with friends. A skate park there is for the skaters right next to the basketball courts and batting cages there also is. A pool is provided where you can do your swim workout or just relax, two gym's are included with machines and free weights. The school also trows parties for the students to have fun and events from each dorm are also provided for one from resident assistants.
Academic Rigor The teachers here are current artist's in the industry, they will provide you with some great advice i guarantee it, the resorces here are (to me) thet in the nation. The teaching methods are short, simple, and straight to the point. Since I began here my drawing skills compared to the current students where a 3, but now it is way beyond a 10 and heading to other galaxies. That is how much I have inproved because all what you have to do is let yourself be coached. Don't bring your feelings when your artwork is critized harsh by your professor. Take that criticizing to better your future artwork so that artwork may be 10 times better than the last one, that way you may say yes that's right the present me is better than the past me.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students The school is great for committed and ambitious students.
Tips for prospective students Make sure that you are willing to work long hours!
Bang for the buck The Academy is pricey, but as far as art schools go, it is still reasonable.
Am enjoying being here The Academy of Art is located in a beautiful, easily accessible city. The school provides transportation to all of their buildings, including over the holidays.
Am learning a lot The Academy of Art is the type of school where you get back what you are willing to put, so yes, that means long hours and lots of work, but the skills learned are essential for a successful career.

Categories Comments Tips for prospective students Make sure to go look for all the classes and get aquantied with the campus and your area. Also, for any one going to college, on the first day bring a notebook to take notes in and get your teachers email address and phone numbers to keep in contact for your classes.
Bang for the buck I believe paying $35,000 for tuition is okay. It covers several things such as housing and classes.
Will enjoy being here I am excited to go to the college this coming fall. The city life is a complete different pace then a small town. I love the fact the college has their own cabs and buses for students to transport to other buildings. Also, the security is legit. Students must keep their ids with them at all times. But there is 37 buildings involved with the school. Most are for housing.
Will learn a lot From the experience I've witness, I enjoy the college. People were friendly and conservative. Even though I didn't visit any of the classes on the campus, many students said the class sizes were perfect and easier place to learn and interact.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students The Academy of Art University is great for an artist looking to work in the 3d Modeling and Animation industry. the school has a great location; a lot of animation studios are within miles of the school. Some of the instructors are working in the industry and are able to provide students with updated skills necessary for today's animation and 3d Modeling jobs.
Tips for prospective students I think the Academy of Art University of California is a good school to attend if you are looking for a career in 3D Modoling and Animation. I have come from the far east cost to attend this school. I've searched the east cost for a School that would compare to this one, but the academy is truly the best school if you are looking for the best training and skills for a jobs requiring creative consciousness.
Bang for the buck I am spending 30000 a year for school. I believe this is not too outrageous for an education. I do expect and hope to have a good job once I graduate from school.
Am enjoying being here Attending the Academy of Art University has been a great experience so fare. Other students have been great work partners and the teachers are incredible at what they do and teach.
Am learning a lot I have learned a lot from the Academy of Art University. The instructors give a lot of work to the students and are strict, hard grading and demanding. This strict training is needed if the student are going to get anywhere in life, because these qualities will always push the student to do better at any work they are given later.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Dorm security is strict, especially for the all girl dorms. You know, because we're girls. But you need a school ID to get into all the buildings, but your ID needs whichever dorm you are staying in to be programed in it, or else the security guard will have to let you in. I feel that this gets a little too strict at times, but it's not 1984 by any means. Well, it's getting close.
Greek Life Yeah, no. There's fraternity, but they're not very active. There was a sorority, but they got disbanded for hazing.
Clubs and Activities All those events and dance classes, plus the school has plenty of clubs. Clubs change every semester, so you might have to check the site to see who is still here and who isn't.
Great for these types of students Anyone interested in a designing career, or just love art in general. No matter what your background, there is something for you at this school.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus This school has buildings all over the city, hence the need for the courtesy shuttle. You can walk, but if you have class at one building and have to go across the city to another, you will be late.
Bang for the buck The reason I put 4 stars, was because I, and many others, have had classes where we felt it was a waste of our money. Either because we got bad teachers, or we learned nothing, or what have you.
What to do for fun One thing I really love about this school is that there is so much to do. AAU Recreation and Campus Life organize events every semester, that are free for students (or cheap, but that's if they have trips outside the city). Some of my favorite events were Halloweek, Speed Meet (actually more fun than you think), Spring Break Staycation and New Student Orientation (a whole week of fun and meeting new people). The school also has 3 free gyms, a pool and many fitness classes. Dance classes include Salsa, Belly Dance, Hip Hop, Ballet, Zumba, Capoeira and Contemporary Jazz. There are also yoga classes every single day. Even if the school isn't holding any events, you're in San Francisco, there's always something going on.
Food and Dining I will say that the meal plans are life-savers for poor college students. There are 3 school cafes that work with the meal plan, and 4 cafes that take money and Knight Kash (Money saved for food outside of the school, I don't really understand it, but whatever). The retail cafes don't have actual meals, but provides some good food if you're in a hurry. The 3 resident cafes (Sutter, I-House and Rodin) have decent food, but I have heard of people getting sick from eating at the I-House. Even I have gotten sick there. Luckily, Rodin and Sutter are better, and if Sutter is crowded, Rodin will not be.
Dorm Life I would suggest being in the dorm for your first year or semester, until you know your way around the city. After that, it's better to get an apartment. For first years, the dorms are ok, but not great. One all girls dorm has communal bathrooms, and NO privacy, but the all boys dorm may be the nicest, complete with private bathrooms and a cafe. From experience, the all girls dorm was very hostile. For second years, and students 21+, the dorms are very nice. They have bathrooms, kitchens, and if you are lucky, you get your own room. Just a warning, if you decide to stay in the dorms during the summer, they jack up the prices.
Academic Rigor This depends on major, classes, teachers and what degree you are going for. Generally speaking, students are expected to put in 30+ of work on their projects.
Tips for prospective students Do not think that just because this is an art school, you get to slack off. It may be open enrollments, but this is a professional school. Keep an open mind, you will meet a lot of people from different countries and cultures who might influence your work. AAU has courtesy shuttles, which are very nice, but depending on where you are in the city, it might be better to walk.
In three sentences A semi-professional environment, where student can meet life long friends and future colleagues while doing the things they love. The university, as well as the city of San Francisco, become home to many students from all over the world, allowing for cultural influences and collaboration on students work. This school is located in a city that is very open, and better influences a students work, but beware, certain spots are hostile to AAU students. *cough*Yerba Buena*cough*

Categories Comments Campus Safety You're as safe as you are in the city. That's really it. There are shuttles and campus safety cruisers to assist students, but the reliability isn't as high as you'd hope.
Greek Life There is none. They try, but this is not a sorority/fraternity haven.
Clubs and Activities There are lots of clubs and activities, but the near non-existent campus makes campus life hard to accomplish. There is no centrality and thus participation is low for events. Freshman probably participate the most, but the peters off quickly.
Bang for the buck As an MPT student, I save thousands of dollars every time I shoot a film here because my tuition goes back into my film making costs. We're one of the few majors whose supplies generally pay for themselves.
What to do for fun The campus is San Francisco, so there are a million things to do both free and costly. Student discounts for movies and museums exists, so try to find time to take advantage of these opportunities.
Food and Dining Some of the cafes that the Academy has are decent, but others are truly not. It's a good thing for Knight Kash and SF's extensive dining options.
Dorm Life The dorms are greatly varied in style and comfort. Some are spacious and beautiful and others are tiny and inconvenient. It's best to get a look at the spaces before picking one, but do it quickly because they've had an overflow problem the last few years.
Academic Rigor Certain programs are extremely rigorous. Many students drop out after the year and a half mark because they cannot keep up with the work. Do not take this art school lightly.
Tips for prospective students Try to get out of housing after your first year. It's a lot of money to pay for their dorms and too many restrictions. It's better to commute from outer districts.
In three sentences This school has tons of resources. If you take advantage of everything they have to offer, you will get close to your tuition's worth.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck Although they are expensive, the variety of classes offered are worth the extra $$$.
Will enjoy being here I'm looking forward to starting in the spring.
Will learn a lot I'm getting ready to start the BFA animation & visual effects online degree program in the spring. They offer a wide range of classes in this field. After looking at the local art institute's class selection, and some other online art programs, I could see such a difference. You aren't limited to just a few major specific classes with a lot of fundamental classes. You'll have a nice variety by the time your 1st year is over.

Tips for prospective students If a prospective student has a real desire to learn the arts and master them, then I recommend looking very seriously in what is offered here at the Academy of Art
Bang for the buck I think the price of attending online is a little expensive, being that the interaction in real time with the instructors is missing.
Am enjoying being here For the most part online school is working for me. There are times when live interaction would be neatly beneficial.
Am learning a lot I have learned more than I ever expected. The curriculum is great and the teachers will help wherever they can.

Bang for the buck in my opinion it is way too overpriced. it seems like a good school until the tuition rolls in, then the class fees roll in, then you get to the payment that is required to even sign up for classes each semester.
What to do for fun i do strictly online so i am not in the ca area.

Tips for prospective students don't attend this school if you have already been to another. your frustration will build until you as yourself why you wanted to go there in the first place. this school is only good for beginner freshman.
In three sentences too expensive, and more about the money then the student. this school requires the student to wave each individual class even if they have numerous classes that transfer from another art college. not like any other college out there.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck its a 50,000$ school so it is expensive. in my opinion its worth it because they teach you the tools on how to succeed in that area.
What to do for fun you choose your schedule so you decide what do do for fun.
Food and Dining not attending on campus.
Dorm Life i am attending online so i wouldn't know about the dorm life.
Academic Rigor online school isn't easy! but it is convenient, you need to have motivation and self discipline to be able to stay on top of your game while attending online, if you like a challenge then you'll like it here.
Tips for prospective students if you love art, any type the academy has it. they didn't disappoint me in the fact that they had the major i wanted here. if you love communicating through the internet and or simply don't have enough time to attend a traditional college or university then you will love it here. they even give you a one week orientation before the classes start.
In three sentences the academy seems to know what they are doing, so far i am anxious to start here, i begin on the 30th of january. they are very helpful, they give you options to spend a bit less, they give you some of the programs for free to reduce the price. they are very helpful and hands on about getting the students involved and into the program even through online classes.

Tips for prospective students for prospective students i would suggest to have a schedule set. to be organized so when you do attend you will not have a difficult time.
In three sentences i am currently taking online courses at academy of art university. i enjoy how they are eager to help me if and when ever i have a question. everyone i have ever spoken to has always been extremely polite and friendly and that is always a plus for me.

Categories Comments Campus Safety buddy system at all times! always have someone with you or tell someone you trust where you are going and what route you are going to be taking and the times you expect to back. call if you will be late and make sure to check in with someone while you are out.
Clubs and Activities beach, dancing, and dining
Great for these types of students if you are busy online would be best for you. but if you are visual learner campus would be best.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus i really don't know much about campus i go to the online part of the college.
Bang for the buck vintage and second hand shops.
What to do for fun explore the city! enjoy the local shops and resturants. i recommend seeing the ocean and beaches as well!
Tips for prospective students online classes or campus classes are really good at aau. i recommend you do your reading assignments because they come in handy when asked a question do not skimp on your reading!
In three sentences aau is a great place to learn. they take their time and really get to know you as a student. they are also really good at helping you when you have a question.

Categories Comments Campus Safety campus safety tries to do a great job with their on-call service, and strict building entrance guidelines, but there aren't any 'police box' things like most campuses have. downtown san francisco is a pretty safe place, though, so nothing to be worried about.
Greek Life there isn't much of a greek life, so if that's something you're interested in, this may not be the right place.
Clubs and Activities there aren't a whole lot of clubs to choose from, but the clubs that are being run are so much fun and very rewarding. it's a great opportunity to make friends and potential co-workers in the same field as you.
Great for these types of students it's great for artistic, creative, or passionate students. if you don't have much experience in a field but have the right mindset, this school will definitely be able to help you succeed!
Bang for the buck although it is pretty expensive, it's really a valuable investment. this school really does take good care of you. they have fantastic teachers who really know their subjects, excellent networking tools and opportunities, and the fact that the school is located in the beautiful san francisco is just another perk!
What to do for fun this is san francisco! there's always something fun to do. if you like live music or clubs, there are plenty of those. we have more than three movie theaters, one of which is located in the huge 8-story mall! there are lots of great parks and sightseeing is great fun. fisherman's wharf is the big tourist spot, so it can get pricey, but it's definitely a great place to treat yourself and friends once in a while. golden gate bridge, bay bridge, and alcatraz are something you definitely want to see.
Food and Dining the cafe's are a perfect way to get that home-cooked meal away from home. the food is actually really good. the school offers great meal plans and a program called knights kash. knights kash can be accepted in several restaurants and stores around downtown, which is a great convenience. you can even request additional stores to be added!
Dorm Life i currently live in the coco chanel dorm, and i love it! living in the dorm, even though i like it, may not be for everyone. if you're new to the city and need to make friends, it's a much better idea to live in the dorms. although, it may seem expensive for dorms, it's really quite cost effective, as most studio apartments can be priced upwards of 2,000 a month. not only are dorms a great option as far as cost, but there really is no match to the experience you get living on campus. ra's are so nice and welcoming, and getting to know and make friends is much easier when you live with them. there is always something going on whether it be a pizza party for valentine's day or a zombie-themed movie night.
Academic Rigor classes themselves aren't exceptionally difficult, but sometimes they require a lot of time for homework. they say to allow 10 hours a week for completing homework and assignments, but that really just means that projects and such are paced quicker than you'd think. it's not difficult if you manage your time and dedicate a time to go to the necessary labs, workshops, etc.
Tips for prospective students consider all your options as far as financials. california is expensive, but there are tons of cost effective ways to make living in the city doable. public transportation is great out here, and the academy itself offers a fantastic free shuttle during the weekdays and on the weekends. whether you live in a dorm or in an apartment, be prepared to get creative with your money. another tip, really be sure of what it is you want to study. changing majors could prove to be a difficult transition. it will cost you a lot more to start over. some areas of study won't cause too much trouble, but if you decide you like fashion instead of filmmaking, a lot of credits won't count. it's different from most schools as there aren't as many electives or liberal arts requirements as core classes. each degree has a pretty specific curriculum guideline, and that's great if you're in the right program, but not so if you're unsure.
In three sentences although this school is pricey, it's education is worth far more. this is only my first semester here, and already i am learning more about the industry than i thought possible! i believe this has to do with the fact that all teachers are actual professionals in their industry and can provide a much more unique approach to teaching.

Bang for the buck worth it.
What to do for fun bay area is fun already.
Food and Dining is san francisco, there are hundreds of restaurants around the school buildings
Dorm Life dont live in the dorms so i do not know
Academic Rigor medium to hard.
Tips for prospective students If you are not a slacker, join this school, but if you just want to spend mommy and daddys money, better do it somewhere else because this school is worth it
In three sentences Its pretty awesome to go there. The teachers do know what they are doing and they help you out throughout your class time.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The school is spread out so it is difficult to monitor the whole campus. There are door guards at all the school buildings and they provide after hours transportation for all students.
Clubs and Activities I attend the Comic Book Club and the Ideation (concept art) Club. Clubs can be a little disorganized sometimes but also have valuable opportunities like guest speakers, publishing opportunities and competitions.
Great for these types of students It is definitely good to be self motivated in this school. It is also a plus to be able to talk to your teachers and ask questions.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is no solid campus. The school buys buildings around the city, so I have classes in odd places.
Bang for the buck The school is moderately expensive, and I wish they offered a few more student services. The biggest cost is the cost of living in the city and tuition, which keeps rising. I have learned a great deal so far, however, and if the quality of the classes continues to be this good then I will be happy.
What to do for fun Most of the campus buildings are located in downtown San Francisco so I am able to walk around easily to anywhere I want. The school also has occasional field trips in and out of the city, and they also have fun special events and festivals. They offer discounts or free trips to places like Alcatraz and the SF zoo.
Food and Dining Meal plans are available but they are also expensive and do not have a lot of options for people with many food allergies such as myself. I usually buy all my own food from nearby grocery stores.
Dorm Life My dorm is small and quiet but still has many activities that bring together the community of the dorm. In my stay, I have made so many new friends and connections that I feel like my dorm is not just a place that I live, but also a community I belong to and a place where I can still learn and network. The dorm also does not feel too cramped and even has kitchens and private bathrooms.
Academic Rigor In the Illustration department, the curriculum is set up very competitively which is very beneficial. I am constantly trying to work harder to improve myself and get a leg up. The standards of A quality work are very high, which is rewarding and encourages students to really put in the time and effort required to be able to succeed outside of school.
Tips for prospective students You must be self-motivated and prepared to work hard. You must also be prepared to take criticism on your work and be willing to change and incorporate other styles into your work. Attend all workshops that you can so you can help yourself improve.
In three sentences The Academy is a fun and competitive school that excels in traditional and fine art areas. Since I have attended, my skills have increased exponentially and I have gained many valuable contacts and resources. The academy is doing a wonderful job preparing me for a full time career after school.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus buildings are really secure. Word of advice, make sure to always have your Student I.D.
Clubs and Activities I had never attended a school with as many clubs and activities available as the Academy. If you can think of a club, it more than likely already exists at the Academy. I really enjoy their Belly Dancing club.
Great for these types of students The dedicated, the nerdy, the day dreamers, the inventive, the creative, the problem solvers, the story tellers, the leaders.
Bang for the buck I am four more semesters away from graduating and I have been able to network with not just instructors but fellow classes mates who are already working in the industry. If you are willing to fully dedicate yourself and pursue your dream career then the Academy is worth the amount of money you spend.
What to do for fun While the School always has a good amount of events students can go to for free/discounted there are also a number of fun things for students to do in the city. The academy has number of guides available in their main office for students that list a large number of tours, places, shopping and dining one can do in the city.
Food and Dining If you know how to cook I recommend sticking to purchasing your own groceries. Food and Dining at the Academy is an extra cost a student really does not need to add to their already high tuition costs.
Dorm Life The school does its best to place you with compatible roommates, but it is also a give or take as some students don't always answer the dorm questioner truthfully. I had a great time living in the dorms as I got to meet a lot of people and even make a few close friends. While it may not be somewhere you will want to remain during your entire schooling it is defiantly a great place to meet people and be up to date with what is going on, on campus.
Academic Rigor School standards are held to a professional level. This means all work needs to be at presentation level when submitted. Critiques are part of every day life in class and are conducted by both Instructors and peers. Which means each individual must be open to listening to critiques and applying them. If you are ever unclear on how to complete an assignment or need help with certain aspects of the class you are always welcomed to ask your instructor, and/or go to workshops for more assistance.
Tips for prospective students My advice to prospective students is to really do your research before attending Academy of Art University as it is a very costly decision. While the Academy's policy of accepting students is open to all skill levels it is a very fast past school with extremely high standards. If you are not willing to put 10 hours or more, daily, into your homework and/or school work this is not for you. If you do decide that the Academy is for you a good tip is to always acquaint yourself with your fellow classmates and make friends; Networking will be the key to your success. Another tip is to stay organized. Staying organized will help you keep up with assignments/projects and will allow you the time you need to complete your work.
In three sentences Academy of Art University is a great school as many of their instructors are established and well known artists in the Art industry. While tuition is very costly it certainly pays off if you put your all into your work and do not procrastinate. The school helps to prepare you for the realities and hardships of entering the Art industry while providing you with helpful advice and instruction to develop yourself as a professional artist.

Categories Comments Campus Safety You can't get on any part of the campus without ID.
Greek Life We don't have sororities or fraternities but I'm sure if you petitioned to make one there wouldn't be any objections.
Clubs and Activities There are tons of clubs on campus it all depends on what floats your boat. They charge a yearly fee, but it become well worth it, I am a part of the Beyond the Front Row fashion club and they offer tons of opportunities outside of school.
What to do for fun The school is in San Francisco there's plenty to do. You can go to the movies, enjoy the beach, shopping downtown or in the mission district, There are museums all over the city to go to.
Food and Dining The cafeteria is great sometimes but other times it sucks so much. The better part of the food comes from other restaurants surrounding the school that accept student meal plans or have deals with a student ID. the cafe at the Fashion Building is cool too.
Dorm Life dorms are seperated for those 17-20 and 21+. The 21+ dorms are basically apartments complete with kitchens, in dorm bathrooms, you're own laundry area, etc... The 17-20 dorms are definitely a bit more cramped, community showers/ bathrooms. small closet space, etc. The best part is the shuttles that come and wheel you off to school.
Academic Rigor I'd say it depends on which teacher you have, some are way harder than others. It's tough though the teachers do expect a lot.
Tips for prospective students Be organized and don't procrastinate. It's very easy to fall behind on class and homework and if you're behind it's hell catching up. You really have to love your craft otherwise it's not worth it.
In three sentences The Academy is a lot of work and sometimes you may feel as though your head is going to explode around finals. The beauty is the school has some big connects and a lot of students get set up with internships and jobs upon graduation. I think that it is a really great school so far.

Categories Comments Campus Safety FANTASTIC safety. Can become slightly annoying when you see the guard everyday and he continues to ask for your ID but it is very safe.
Greek Life None that I know of.
Clubs and Activities Not many to talk about. There is a huge GLBS club but other than that not much.
Great for these types of students Great for creative and artistic students.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Art Who? Art U! Weird school saying.
Bang for the buck Pretty expensive, what university isn't? The school supplies and housing are the most expensive. Expect to pay 5K for just a semester of housing.
What to do for fun The city of San Francisco is absolutely amazing. Explore China Town and Downtown for great sites and fantastic shopping.
Food and Dining The food isn't top notch but they do try. The hours are slightly off for the dinning halls and close too early but food is food.
Dorm Life Dorm life is always interesting, here you usually have your own bathroom which is a plus. HOWEVER, living with a 'different' majored roommate can become very frustrating sometimes.
Academic Rigor Lots of work, that defiantly pays off.
Tips for prospective students Be prepared to work, don't expect it to be easy, try to do your best but also have fun and be creative.
In three sentences Interesting, new environment with many friendly faces. Teachers are qualified and hands on with their students. This school gives you the opportunity to explore what you love while providing you with the guidance and materials you need.

Tips for prospective students make sure to do in-depth research of the program you chose and compare other options also. also make sure you are on the 4 year plan.

Bang for the buck this is one of the cheapest top art schools where you can get exceptional education, experience and help where many other top art schools are just expensive and don't really do much other than promote their programs.
What to do for fun aau has many activities on campus and online that suites just about everyone. projects, collaborations, talks, and many other activities.
Food and Dining i'm a distant learning student so i don't know.
Dorm Life i don't live in the dorms.

Food and Dining the school offers breakfast, lunch and dinner for dorm student, some of my friends live in the dorms and from what i herd, i might not live in the dorms but i sure would like to just to taste the food.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck i'm a little on the fence. it's incredibly expensive and you have to take summer courses at least half time before you can qualify for portfolio scholarships. however, you can learn every course online (except for architecture) that you would learn on campus for the same price as attending in person, which is uncommon for most schools.
What to do for fun studied online, does not apply.
Food and Dining studied online, does not apply.
Dorm Life studied online, does not apply.
Academic Rigor both instructors i've had have been incredibly thorough and helpful.
Tips for prospective students save up a lot of money and never give up. especially taking online classes, it's easy to want to not work, but you have to push yourself to make it worthwhile.
In three sentences it gives a lot of great opportunities for career-boosting education. it's very costly, but worth it if you have the funds. the instructors seem to have great senses of humor and are extremely helpful.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The buildings are very secure with key cars access only and guards at every building but keep in mind this is San Francisco and there are bad parts of town. The building themselves are very secure but the city is a different story. I have yet to have any safety issues but they are possible when living in a city.
Greek Life I am not aware of any fraternities or sororities but I suppose many artists wouldn't be too interested in that sort of thing.
Great for these types of students Great for artistic people or people looking to join the creative industry.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus This is not a campus. The entire city is the campus. Every department has a building, unless you're a fashion major then you have about five.
What to do for fun San Francisco has lots to offer like clubs and bars and hookah lounges. There are also the very iconic sides of the city which help for artistic inspiration.
Tips for prospective students There are all different levels at this school. You can be a beginner or an expert but one thing is for sure, don't come to this school thinking you're the best and it's going to be easy because the work is rigorous and the talent is amazing.
In three sentences Overall a very good school with very qualified teachers. The tuition is very high to match and is only getting higher. For my major they push for the corporate industry which I will not be going in to.

Academic Rigor The foundations classes are the hardest, but the school has a nice balance between fun and challenging. No one sleeps in these classes, no matter how late we stayed the night before.
Tips for prospective students Get the software you'll need in advanced so you can take classes online. Its just as informative, and its cheaper!

Greek Life I'm an online student so I can't comment on that.
Clubs and Activities Each major has its own club. I'm an online student so I can only participate in virtual Town Hall meetings, Facebook interaction, and a virtual club.
Great for these types of students To attend this school online, you must be self-disciplined and motivated to succeed. Good time management skills and the ability sort out your priorities will be key.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus I'm an online student so I can't comment on that.
Bang for the buck I feel that I am getting an extremely good education for my chosen major and that I will have the skills I need to work in my field when I graduate. It is a very expensive school, though, and I wish the tuition wasn't quite so high.
What to do for fun I'm an online student but it has been fun to follow AAU on Facebook and there are clubs you can join as well. They also hold virtual Town Hall meetings where you can hear and be heard.
Food and Dining I'm an online student so I can't comment on that.
Dorm Life I'm an online student so I can't comment on that.
Academic Rigor Grading is tough. Getting an A at this school is truly something to be celebrated and not given out lightly.
Tips for prospective students Do not underestimate the time you will have to put in if you are attending online! Classes will take 10-20 hours a week each. Don't be discouraged if you are not a natural artist; they will teach you.

Categories Comments Clubs and Activities I tried to start a AIGA student group, but had a hard time finding a faculty sponsor, all the good instructors who I asked were unavailable. Beyond that, I didn't participate in any existing groups.
Great for these types of students For the online program, people who work best in the middle of the night or enjoy keeping odd hours and are okay with sitting still in front of the computer for long periods of time.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus I obtained my degree online. I'd say take advantage of the library subscriptions available. Digital-Tutors, Women's Wear Daily (WWD), WGSN, Ad-Age and many more subscription services are included for student use. Exploit this! Call the librarian.
Bang for the buck It's quite expensive for what it is. However, I think it's still a good choice for online art education. That said, if you're considering a brick and mortar option, you might be better served at a cheaper, local institution.
What to do for fun My experience was online, so perhaps fun is switching to the a different browser tab.
Food and Dining Another benefit of online education, you can eat and drink in class without complaint.
Dorm Life There is no dorm life community in the online education environment. Academy of Art does have a physical campus, which they maintain, I think mostly as an anchor for their more lucrative and populated online offerings. The social experience online is quite lacking. There are unmoderated open-topic student forums in the online system, but from my experience, they are very sparse and not much extracurricular communication goes on between online students.
Academic Rigor If committed, the online load can be quite sizable. I'd say that the online forum encourages more debate than a lecture hall environment or classroom environment, where students may be less likely to voice opinions. The online format requires diligence because there is no one making you budget your time. One is solely responsible for getting tasks done before a midnight deadline each Monday (Tuesday morning).
Tips for prospective students Transfer in up to ~30 units can save you money, if taken at a more affordable community college. Build your stills before entering. While the school doesn't require a portfolio, you will get a better education if you primer yourself prior to entry.
In three sentences AAU provides a decent art education for those who require learning online. The drop-out rate is quite high, over 50% for most if not all departments, so ensure your ready for the commitment and have the vision and drive to make it as a creative worker. If you work hard and curious by nature will take something good from it, but be prepared to deal with lots of fellow students who are under-performing, probably shouldn't be there and drag class discussion and performance down.

Bang for the buck The school is very expensive, but if online classes are a priority, this is the best school available.
Dorm Life I take online classes.
Tips for prospective students This is not an easy ride, expect to spend 25-30 hours a week minimum on 2 classes. Modules are extremely informational, you can contact your professor any time with questions. Class discussions are a MUST. A's are awarded for exceptional work.
In three sentences AAU has a fun but intense curriculum. AAU's professor's are very easy to contact and very supportive. AAU's financial aid dept. and student representatives are all very helpful.

Greek Life None.
Clubs and Activities Good clubs but school demands a lot of your time.
Great for these types of students Artistic, hard working students.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus San Francisco is your campus so your whole city gets to be where you are. My favorite is Chubba's Thai food!
What to do for fun Its san francisco just being there is fun! But mostly the beach, fisherman's warf and finding yummy places to eat.
Dorm Life I do not recommend the dorms at all. One of the worst experiences of my life.
Tips for prospective students Be prepared to work long and hard. You can't give up and it wont be any fun if you do. The end is always the most exciting to see what you have created.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Very good at keeping only students in the dorms and in the school buildings. Also offer after midnight transportation.
Clubs and Activities They offer a little bit of everything; it's hard to not find something to get into.
Great for these types of students Laid back, but very self-motivated. Artistic and very inspired.
Bang for the buck Expensive school, but they do offer a lot.
What to do for fun Go out and experience the city life.
Food and Dining Usually pretty good.
Dorm Life Depends on the dorm you enter, but has the potential of being very good. I give this 3/5, because there are good dorms, just not well advertised and are expensive.
Academic Rigor Depends on the student's abilities, but the school has a way of getting everyone on the same level. But other than that it's rather difficult if you're 100% committed.
Tips for prospective students It's not good to enter in thinking highly yourself.
In three sentences It's a school for highly motivated people, who are creatively inspired. It's tough, but will get you prepared. It's not a school to be taken

Greek Life None to speak of. So 5 stars automatically.
Clubs and Activities GDC is always fun. A club for nearly every major.
Great for these types of students Anyone that considers themselves an artist is welcome to try it out, just work hard and you can achieve great things.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Go to Pearl's Deluxe Burgers. It will change your life.
Bang for the buck Expensive school, but your portfolio will be worth the money, as well as the networking.
What to do for fun Fun? This is art school, fun is not allowed.
Food and Dining Plenty of choices around the city, though it can get expensive.
Dorm Life Just don't live in the dorms. Recommended for first year, but try not to stay.
Academic Rigor Difficult and rewarding workloads in all classes.
Tips for prospective students Work hard or don't consider yourself an artist. This school is not an easy ride.

Great for these types of students This college is PRIME for fashion and Art students, i.e. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, and also various art expos and frequent visits from well-known artists.
Bang for the buck For the choice of majors, quality of the coursework/material; its well worth your $ spent!
What to do for fun While I may not be a San Francisco native, I stay connected with AAU via Facebook and email updates, and I will say I very much wish I lived there. There are ALWAYS extracurricular events taking place. Not to mention Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week!
Food and Dining Again... Online student
Dorm Life Online Student
Academic Rigor I have only just begun my first two classes, however I am reaching the end of the semester so I can say without a doubt that my instructors have been wonderful.. They're everything you want (and NEED) in a college instructor. I also found the coursework to be vigorous challenge and the work load was just right. Not too much and not too little.
Tips for prospective students Pursue the education you love. For all those art students out their that are considering design, and aren't sure where to go... AAU has the flexibility of a brick and mortar campus as well as online. Yet nothing in sacrificed in terms of quality of learning.
In three sentences Passionate- The staff, faculty, and other students have this infectious passion and drive for what they do. Personal- I feel that I connect with my instructors on a strong personal level. Dedicated- I feel that the school is dedicated to drive their students to not just enroll but to complete their degree and realize their dreams!

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Artistically driven students who are not afraid to combine work and play are the perfect match to this school.
Bang for the buck This University is a private school, so it is higher tuition. However, for the quality education and support it is worth it. The Academy of Art is also so connected to the industries it trains for that it is more than education that you are paying for. The added opportunities to be seen by potential employers is a huge bonus.
What to do for fun The warf is fun to visit, you are right by the ocean, there are numerous cultural events to attend, not to mention the great park. I think anyone could find something to do in San Francisco.
Food and Dining I don't live in San Francisco, but I have been there. The cultural scene and food options are just about endless.
Dorm Life I am a married mom of 3 enrolled in the online course, so I cannot say anything about the dorm! I am sure it is a blast, how could it not be living with a bunch of art majors?
Academic Rigor The classes I have taken so far were so engaging and complete for my field I was not daunted by the work load. The teachers make it fun and make you feel at ease learning but they also make sure you are learning to rise to the industry standards.
Tips for prospective students If you are looking for top notch art or design curriculum, this school is it! Look into their catalog and ask questions. You won't be disappointed! It is worth finding financial aide resources for.
In three sentences After just one semester I can say Academy of Art University is amazing! The curriculum is complete, in depth, current, challenging and fun all in one. The staff is exceptional in all departments in support and friendliness.

Tips for prospective students Make sure it is right for you. They will try to pressure you to come but make sure you take your time.
In three sentences Academy of Art University is a great school for hands-on-learning but you may begin to feel like you are on somewhat of a conveyer belt because the administration is always recruiting new students and the old ones can easily fall off. It is a very expensive school and it is easily to need more help than given. You truly get from this school what you put out of it.

Clubs and Activities I have not researched these to date, this is my first year at AAU.
Great for these types of students Good work ethic, Independent learners, Highly motivated, Low computer skill, Good communicators
Bang for the buck I couldn't ask for any more than I already receive, personal guidance, academic standards (stated very clearly), and the opportunity to excel in an online environment.
What to do for fun Excited and often updated student portal as well as online magazine and other cool features you can peruse through the 3 websites available to students.
Dorm Life I'm an online student; so my dorm is my bedroom. I do however have it set up like an office with minimal distractions to keep me focused. Online discussion forums keep me connected with my classmates.
Academic Rigor You have to be assertive in discussions (online) and efficient with the course work, (Reading, Exercises, Assignments, Quizzes, Final Exam). You have to find a way to stay motivated.
Tips for prospective students Research the degree you want, speak to an advisor both financial and academic to weigh your options. Expect to treat school like a job because to get behind is to put yourself in a position to fail.
In three sentences AAU has great support staff for students, especially first year students. Excellent web online portal and great technical service. I am always able to get my questions answered in a timely fashion; I love AAU.

Great for these types of students Great for any art student! Whether you're a recluse who avoids the classrooms setting (like me!) or a get out of the house kind of person. Online and on-campus are exceptional!
Bang for the buck I love the atmosphere and the type of education I am getting, but I will admit this school is pretty steep financially.
What to do for fun Online students can enjoy any home or outdoor activity. The Academy of Art has a facebook page so you can chat with others, make connections, and stay in the loop. For anyone on-campus, there are events all the time. E-mail updates are regular!
Food and Dining Taking classes at home is nice. I'm not a bad cook. Neither are my roommates.
Dorm Life Most of my classes are online so, yes I love the atmosphere.
Academic Rigor Everything is pretty organized. Very in-depth education.

Clubs and Activities Lot's of clubs to choose from that usually are held after most classes/weekends.
Great for these types of students Hardworking, serious students
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus This school..is all over the city.
Bang for the buck For the cost, you have school bus that go to almost all the buildings, and security to monitor who goes and who comes in and leaves along with access to awesome programs like Adobe CS(-whatever the newest one is-) full.
What to do for fun I don't sped much time on campus besides class but the school provides a lot of activities and dances. There is also a place to run, work out, and swim.
Food and Dining While i have never eaten food from the school, there are wonderful places around it.
Academic Rigor Expect a one week turnaround for most of your class assignments.
Tips for prospective students Apply for scholarships. The school is seriously expensive and sometimes (as I found out) even the max loans down the road might not be enough to cover the full cost (tuition, books..transportation) so keep that in mind and be ready for a lot of work.
In three sentences Hard work is given here and it's important not to slack off and stay on top of ALL your homework. Overall it's a pretty good school to get you ready for the industry.

Food and Dining Having a meal plan is required if you live in the dorm, so be prepared for the many stomach aches that come from eating at the cafeteria. I suggest trying the food from around the city. It gets pricy, but you will be satisfied.
Dorm Life As much as the school tries to come up with ways of getting students together, nothing sounds worth my time. The dorm was also very overpriced for what you get out of it.
Academic Rigor Each class can easily be given 10 hours of work load each week. Often times you will spend more than that per class.
Tips for prospective students Don't come to this school if you expect to be taught how to be creative, no one can teach you how to be creative. This school teaches you how to mold your creativity.
In three sentences The Academy of Art University is not like other art schools. The teachers are all very experienced and will teach you all that they know. This school can really get you places if you work hard.

Bang for the buck You get really good equipment to use, but need your own camera if you're going into photography.
What to do for fun Not a huge campus life, but there are lots of cool things in the city to do.
Food and Dining Dining is ok, you get Knight Kash which certain restaurants take as money here.
Dorm Life Dorms here are pretty strict with visitors and overnight guests, but overall you will have fun.
Academic Rigor It's work that an artist would find challenging. Don't be lax freshman year, go hard.
Tips for prospective students Do your research for living, I recommend dorms for freshman year before you live on your own to make new friends. You make a lot of connections.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck This is an amazing school, as I said before. The professors are top quality industry professionals, and the opportunities they offer are astounding, for example they do a fashion show in New York Fashion Week for select graduating students. The tuition is very high though, currently $765 per unit, each class is three units. This is the biggest discouragement for me, especially because I never though I would let money get in the way of my education. But thus is the real life. My drive is not dead though. I am still fighting.
What to do for fun The academy offers many features. They have some prestigious guest speakers, for example John Galliano recently accepted an award here. They do broadcast for online students as well as it is important to make them/us feel like we are a part of the campus life.
Food and Dining Again, this is not applicable, I take online courses. I am a horrible cook though and would not trust my own cooking. I tend to burn cereal.
Dorm Life This is not applicable, I take courses online. However, I do love my apartment with my two dogs, three if you count my fianc©e.
Academic Rigor In some colleges you get away with a lot of things, weather that is late work, not showing up for class, or doing just enough to get by. At the Academy they do not tolerate this. They teach you time management and quality are the most important things you can learn in any given field.
Tips for prospective students Don't come to this school if you are not willing to do your best. Make sure you have a passion for your field of study before pouring your money into this school. If you have a passion for your career and can't see yourself in a regular boring job your whole life, then you will do well.
In three sentences The Academy of Art University is an excellent school to attend, and the opportunities are amazing. The tuition is highreally high but if you are going to work hard and learn everything your brain can hold, it is well worth it. I take the online courses and feel that I work ten times harder with this school then when I was going to school locally.

Categories Comments Campus Safety From what I've heard, the dorm buildings are very well guarded. The academic buildings are extremely well guarded and do not allow entry by anyone who is not a student. I wasn't even allowed to bring my mom in to see the building because they very effectively protect the artwork.
Bang for the buck Tuition has gone up a tiny bit every year since I've been here. Yes, every year the school renovates some resources or provides new free services to the student, however be aware that this is a private, for-profit institution.
What to do for fun In the heart of San Francisco, there is ALWAYS something to do. Free things to do are live music, gallery openings, outdoor music and art festivals, window shopping, touring architecture and parks. The city has amazing shopping, both thrift stores and high-end, as well as great, unique museums with something for everyone.
Tips for prospective students Do something for your class every week. Teachers here are not blind to any effort put in, but they really do not like to see no effort at all.
In three sentences A school with very professional and passionate teachers. The resources available are top-of-line, modern technology. A school that really encourages its students every step of the way.

The Academy of Art University has sports teams as well varying from girl's softball to golf, basketball, and table tennis.
Great for these types of students Great for artists of course. Don't come here if you are not really into the city life or a fast paced living area. And it's a very liberal city so keep that in mind.
Bang for the buck Get a Clipper Card- you'll need it! Always have a camera on you because you never know what crazy things may go on in San Francisco. Save your quarters like they are your most prized possession- they're for laundry!!!
What to do for fun Take photos in the Mission. Dance the night away downtown at Ruby Skye or Vertigo. Hang out with friends at Golden Gate Park and visit some cool places like the Academy of Sciences, De Young Museum, or the Conservatory of Flowers!
Food and Dining The food at the Academy of Art can be a bit on the bad side of the line. Sodexo, the food company that supplies the university with its meals, is in need of some tune ups with their chefs and menu items. Many times, I find myself eating off campus many nights.
Dorm Life Resident Life at the Academy of Art is full of cheery, exciting, and interactive Resident Assistants that make living in the resident halls enjoyable. With some resident halls having gyms, pools, dance halls, and common spaces there is always something to do!
Academic Rigor It's a very skilled based school where you're abilities as an artist are truly tested. There are some where you are pushed to the limit and then more. The Academy of Art University pushes its students to be the best in each department.
Tips for prospective students Try living on campus for at least a year or semester. It'll give you the opportunity to live in some of the greatest parts of San Francisco and meet some great people in the resident halls. To add, they have some pretty awesome Resident Assistants that work there!
In three sentences I am learning all that I could have ever wanted in the Graphic Design department at the Academy of Art University. Being in San Francisco has been amazing and I feel right at home with the school. It's like living the high life!

Dorm Life I am an online student

Food and Dining I eat all my meals at home.
Dorm Life I dont live in a dorm
Academic Rigor It is tough and challenging but if you love it...Its worth it!
Tips for prospective students If you are going to attend online courses you need to be organized and strict with yourself. Its great being able to work on your time, but you have to stay on top of your work.
In three sentences This school is excellent with all the help they offer and their teaching is helpful and organized. I have learned so much in one year and I expect to learn more and I am looking forward to it. Everyone is helpful and freindly as well!

Categories Comments Campus Safety Very safe, I am very impressed with the level of care this school has for their students and effort they put into keeping us safe.
Greek Life There is a fraternity at this school, I remember when a fellow classmate was ecstatic because he was accepted.
Clubs and Activities I love this about our school, we have an athletics program. We are probably the only Art school with an athletics program; soccer, basketball, track, cross country, and others. Many artists neglect to keep them self active and healthy so this program is a really great addition. There are also hundreds of other clubs anyone is allowed to attend and create.
Great for these types of students Artist's who want to make money... And why I say Artist its not just painting, there's everything from photography to animation to game design, illustration, fashion, and so much more I don't even remember.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The uniqueness of our campus is that it isn't in one location. You get to see more of San Fransisco and use the school's free bus system which provides to be very helpful.
Bang for the buck Absolutely I believe there is complete Bang for the Buck unless you are doing online classes, depending on your major. You do not get the personal interaction you need to get used to for when your in the industry.
What to do for fun You are in the capital of fun, duh San Fransisco? The fun never ends. There are 5$ clubs, bars, restaurants, and tons of nightlife for the night owls. Beaches, biking, ferry, hiking, photography, interview a homeless man, endless stuff you could do during the day. Or whenever really the city never sleeps...It is San Fransisco.
Food and Dining As a freshmen you are required to get a food plan. Some people love it and some people hate it but personally I liked there menu. Besides if your a starving artist it doesn't really matter anyway. ;)
Dorm Life Face it, a dorm is a dorm, but the best part is the socialization. If its any school that depends on being social its an art school. Dorms can be a good way to network and meet people you will be working with for the rest of your life.
Academic Rigor It always depends on the class and the level, but usually you have to but lengthy amounts of time into your work...or at least you should. This means it can get challenging but the payoff is worth it.
Tips for prospective students Work hard! This school is serious business, when you do a project for a homework assignment, take it seriously. The stuff you do during your time here will go in your portfolio, so if you want to get hired act like you are already are.
In three sentences The Academy of Art University is a challenging yet rewarding school in which you learn how to turn creativity into profit. One of the best things you will get out of attending this school is networking; Committed students will be working with you later in the industry, and teachers are currently working in the business and become doorways into getting a job. All in all, this school teaches you how to be an artist, and how to make money doing.

Academic Rigor Plan to work hard or don't attend.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Most buildings require security guards at the doors, and the ones that do not have this will not open without a student ID. Every night there is a campus safety cruiser that will take students where they need to go if it is school related (for safety reasons but not to be used as a personal cab, basically).
Greek Life I don't know of any frats or sororities.
Great for these types of students Work hard, play hard
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The school has a sports department (the only art school that offers this in the US to my knowledge). It also has various small events for students, and a yearly Rocky Horror Picture Show event around Halloween. I keep to myself too much to be much help, though.
Bang for the buck This school is great, but really expensive and on-campus housing doesn't do anything to help with reducing stress around move-out or finals. The instruction is great, but the school is for-profit and the administration doesn't *really care about the students.
What to do for fun The school has a cafe for students to hang out and offers various workshops and also has two gyms. But the city of San Francisco is a lot of fun, too. There is always something to do or go to or see. In the rare event of free time, boredom is hard to come by.
Food and Dining The cafeteria only offers a variety of food some of the time. The food isn't bad but the wait for the food can be really terrible, which is bad due to the workload of the school. Sometimes the times when the cafes are open don't work well with class schedules, but the school does offer sack lunches for such occasions. Those get tiresome really fast, but are better than nothing.
Dorm Life Some events for housing students happen but it depends on the buildings RA's and how much they do. It's a dry campus so even if you're over 21 you can be evicted if you have alcohol on the premises. The staff doesn't always communicate building issues to the building inhabitants. Most buildings have a doorman, which can feel kind of awful sometimes.
Academic Rigor With a graduation rate of 29%, most people don't make it out, largely because of the workload of this school and the high expectations coupled with it. Under-experienced artists struggle at this school, but it is possible for such students to make it through.
Tips for prospective students Be prepared to work very hard. This school is not for partiers or for people who aren't taking schooling seriously. If you work hard you will excel, if you do not you will probably not graduate. Be prepared for the costs of living in San Francisco if you attend on campus. And only bring what you need, because move-out happens usually two days after the last class
In three sentences Academy of Art University offers experienced, industry level teachers and highly customizable majors (in my experience, though there are occasionally iffy teachers, most of the teaching staff is fantastic). Many sought-after artists also come to the school to talk to the students (for free!). The school has open admission for undergraduates, and requires no portfolio to enter (but experienced or not, be prepared to work).

Categories Comments Campus Safety Safety is the number one priority. Safety for staff and student alike take president over everything. They want students to have fun and not have to worry as well.
Greek Life Although we don't have our own Frats or Sororities, there are opportunities to still get involved in those activities. The academy makes sure you have access.
Clubs and Activities There's a club for just about everything at the Academy of Art. Me personally, I'm involved in the Veterans club as well as the Improv and Drama club. If you're interested in it, chances are, there's a club ready to welcome you with open arms.
Great for these types of students Creative, open-minded individuals and those that want to experience new things will have the most fun here. It's a very diverse place with so much to offer. You'll be amazed at how much you'll grow here.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There's a massive pillow fight every year, which I've never heard of, but it's something students participate in by the dozens and it seems to grow every year. There's also the tricycle race which is one of my favorite activities to partake in.
Bang for the buck Like any art school, it can be pricey, but as long as you're smart about your spending habits and really take the time to involve yourself in the school and what you're doing, every penny will be worth it.
What to do for fun The Academy of Art University is always offering stuff to do. They take full advantage of the city they're located in and want you to as well so there are always things to throughout the school to include camping trips, trips to Magic Kingdom, snowboarding/skiing trips, and tons more.
Food and Dining San Francisco is a great place to go out and experience the food. Plus, if you're a freshman, there are excellent meal plans and knight cash which allows you to go out to local restaurants and eat!
Dorm Life Dorm life is interesting, the rooms are somewhat small, but the friendships you can form from living so close together will stick with you forever.
Academic Rigor It can be pretty strenuous and sometimes it's hard to find the right people to work with, but the workload is what you make of it. Don't procrastinate, and you won't sweat too hard.
Tips for prospective students Make sure to save money! San Francisco is an expensive city to live. Don't be afraid to try new things! There's so much to do and experience that you'll truly be missing out if you don't explore! Don't just talk to those that are in your major, you'll be so caught up in your work sometimes that you'll forget to network and meet people within the school. It'd be beneficial for you to do so.
In three sentences It is a fun school to learn and make amazing connections and lifelong friends through. If you're looking to work hard and have that hard work pay off, AND have fun doing it, this is the place to go!

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus security issues a safety report every semester. I've never had any problems but I've grown up here. It's a good idea to walk with friends, take the shuttles at night if you don't know the areas that you are in. Some of the AAU buildings are near the Tenderloin area which has a high drug/crime rate. The city has a high homeless rate so students may come in contact with people asking for money. Generally, the homeless/transients don't come near the school. Each building has a security guard and/or campus i.d.scanners.
Greek Life Very small greek scene. Last time I checked, there was 1 national fraternity, Kappa Sigma (colony) and 1 local sorority, Sigma Delta. What I've found is that there actually are a lot of students who are members of greek orgs but they pledged somewhere else and then transferred to AAU later. I'm in a national sorority and enjoy the experience.
Clubs and Activities From the website (students are always adding clubs during the year): Tea Time Animation Club AIAS Artistry United BADA -Documentary Photo club Beyond the Front Row Children's Book Club Chinese Students Association Christian Student Fellowship Client 86 Comedy Club Comic Book Club Competitive Gaming Community Community of Art Educators Drama Club IAD Club Ideation Club Indian Students Association Interactive Media Arts Club Kappa Sigma Fraternity Motion Picture Society Otakus Anonymous (Anime) Outloud Pitch Practice Saudi Student Club Sequential Imagery Consortium Sigma Delta Sorority Speak Out! Great for these types of students People who are disciplined enough to handle themselves and who are open to hearing constructive critiques about their work and able to give constructive criticism to others. You deal with ALL TYPES OF PERSONALITIES here. San Francisco is a major metropolitan city in the U.S. with all cultures and races. This school is not for closed minded types.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Our buildings are scattered across downtown San Francisco and south of Market areas so we have shuttles that get everyone around (free). You have to have your student id to get on the shuttles. There are movie nights at the Urban Knight Cafe.
Bang for the buck It's a tough place to be but if you work hard, ask questions, use the resources that are not only at the school but in the city as well, and network, a student should do well. This school is NOT for the lazy, uninspired or people who waste time. AAU is a trade school that is run as a business because that's what it is: a FOR PROFIT proprietary school. You do get what you pay for but they make you work for it.
What to do for fun I've grown up in San Francisco so I know a lot of off-campus things to do. The school does offer clubs and social activities through Campus Life & Leadership. Since I've been at the school, I've joined 3 clubs. TOns of things to do. Union square is nearby, the campus shuttles can drop you off near Ghiradelli Square, you can rid the cable cars, the art scene in the city is amazing and I could go on! Golden Gate Park, Ocean Beach, San Bruno Mt. trails & hiking!
Food and Dining I don't live on campus but food service is available to non-dorm students. The Urban Knight Cafe is nice. The food has been pretty good and the selections are plentiful.
Dorm Life The dorms are renovated/converted lofts, apartment buildings and hotels. I don't live on campus but they look decent from what I've seen. There are many type of living options for undergrads and grads within campus housing. Under 21 housing, female/male only, Grads only, over 21 only, I think you get the idea. I've hear the typical dorm complaints about room size, getting along with room mates and so forth. The prices are comparable to rents in the city though I know student who find cheaper housing. To live on campus you have to have health insurance.
Academic Rigor If you push yourself, you'll be amazed at what you can do. I've found the work challenging and comparable to what will happen to you in the real world. You learn from working professionals and your fellow student artists.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you want to go to school here because 1) it's expensive. 2) the workload is intense and a LOT 3) Didi I mention it's a LOT of work? I cant stress that enough.
In three sentences It's a LOT of work and requires good time management skills. Very talented students. Expensive but worth it if you put in the effort.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The Academy of Art campus is the city of San Francisco, meaning that it can only be as safe as the city. However, the buildings are all secured with locks that need your ID to open and front desks. The dorms have key access as well, and some dorms have a front desk as well. Sometimes I see Campus Security guys walking around on the street near school buildings.
Greek Life The Academy has a small greek life that I believe is just starting.
Clubs and Activities There are many clubs, and everyone is enthusiastic about them and very involved. There are sports teams as well, which is somewhat unusual for an art school. :)
Great for these types of students The Academy is great for extremely driven students. As a graduate, they drop a huge workload on us and recommend just THREE classes a semester. I would usually take four or five as an undergraduate, but at the moment three is really the only feasible amount if I also want a life. Come here if you want to be pushed.
Bang for the buck Although the school is up there in expense, I believe that it is worth the education I am getting. Not to mention the fact that I am living in the heart of San Francisco, one of the most beautiful cities on the west coast.
What to do for fun The Academy has something going on ALL THE TIME. There is usually a movie playing for free in a cafe, or a lecture going on, or workshops that run every week. There are sports events, health and wellness events, as well as trips to the nearby Yosemite and Muir Forest.
Food and Dining Although the school's cafeterias are served by Sodexo, which has horrible food most of the time, it also offers the availability of using flexcash for nearby restaurants and in school-run cafes.
Dorm Life The dorms at the school are varied, but from my experience it doesn't seem to be much different from other schools. They are clean and very well maintained.
Academic Rigor The Academy is known for its hard grading scale, and it's true. The teachers hold us up to a very high standard, which can sometimes be frustrating, but once you hit a breakthrough you will be happy they pushed you so hard.
Tips for prospective students The best tip I can give is to read up on the school. The Academy has some bad reviews on the usual websites like Yelp, so go deeper. Talk to current students and read about the teachers who actually work here. Though they are hard graders, it is all to get us into our prospective field of study.
In three sentences I came to the school with mixed expectations. But the minute I stepped into the classroom I knew that the teachers here were here to make us better. I have not once felt like I am wasting my education here.

Academic Rigor The summer is an accelerated programs. You've got to stay on top of the work at all times.
Tips for prospective students For online programs, you get as much as you put into it. It's important to be an active participant in the discussions and work to get the most out of the classes.
In three sentences It's an engaging online masters program with majors more to my liking.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Every AAU building is card accessed ONLY, if that doesn't make u feel all warm and safe inside then know the security here is wonderful and fully qualified for your safety every identification card is checked at the door to ensure staff and students are up to date on there current id's. AAU also has its own shuttle service to ensure students and staff get from building to building safely including to and from dorm buildings.
Clubs and Activities Academy of Art has Sports!!! The Academy has added so many great new activities for students and still contributing to those activities. Art is the focus but AAU offers so many ways to expand to new horizons such as Baseball, Basketball, Dance, Tennis, etc.
Bang for the buck The Academy of Art University deserves its bucks because it offers one hell of a bang. AAU truly is an investment, do not dive in unless your completely sure and ready to better yourself as an artist.
What to do for fun Scream San Francisco!!....Now wasn't that fun just on its own. This city has more fun to offer than I can say. I would simply recommend every student getting out there be creative and explore we are artist this is what we do.
Food and Dining There is absoulutley no dissapoitments when it comes to food n dining. There is quite literally something for Everyone.
Dorm Life Its San Francisco!!!! The dorms are great, any artists' perfect escape even if your a homebody. The dorm buildings are placed strategicly through out SF at beautiful locations. Some of these dorms my even keep you inside there so great but being in such a beautiful city its unlikely.
Academic Rigor Invest in a good durable notebook, this is art school but trust your going to Want to take notes. The things you learn here no matter your talent will be useful through out your entire artistic career.
Tips for prospective students Portfolio!!!!! Your portfolio is key. If you have a piece of art doesn't matter if its from preschool pack it up and bring it along. At AAU inspiration is everywhere and things you may have done in the past can always assist you in your future work.
In three sentences The Academy of Art University is the first step towards a life altering transition for any career oriented artist. The resources AAU places at every students disposal are top of the line and more than helpful in assisting any artist with there passion. No matter how long your stay at AAU may be, you will leave with this great outlook, will, and determination to continue the escalation of personal success.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students AAU's online program is great for any student who is self motivated. It is great for students of all ages, but especially older students who have jobs and families.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Sorry, again, I can not comment on this.
Bang for the buck AAU is not a cheap place to go, however, they are one of the top art schools in the United States and I do believe you get what you pay for. All of my instructors have been very knowledgeable and they are all artists working in their fields.
What to do for fun Ditto for this as well.
Food and Dining Again, as an online student I can't comment on campus life.
Dorm Life Since I am an online student I can't comment on dorm life.
Academic Rigor Being in California, AAU has the latest technology and are up to date on what the industry (whatever art industry you are studying) needs and educate students based on those needs.
Tips for prospective students If you decide to do the online program, be ready to work. Just because it is online does not mean it is easy. You also need to have good time management skills as it is up to you when do to the work. However, if you are willing to put in the time and effort, you will have the skills you need to advance in your career
In three sentences AAU is a great school for anyone looking to learn in a creative field. Excellent instructors and really comprehensive studies. Their online program is the best out there and great for continuing education students like myself.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Pretty safe I guess, like you need your id badge to enter any school building and to enter any dorm. They have lots of security around the freshmen dorms and in the school buildings. Haven't really seen much security in the upper upperclassmen dorms though....
Greek Life idk...
Clubs and Activities they could use a bit more clubs , campus life has organized many fun activities for the school though.
Great for these types of students students who love the city and Art.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Ever October the school has this special Alcatraz VIP tour given only to AAU students. The island is only opened for AAU staff and students and other tourist can't tour the island that day. It's pretty cool if you never been to Alcatraz before.
Bang for the buck A very very expensive school but what school isn't nowadays? actually a lot of other art school I checked out were a lot more pricey then AAU so the pricing is somewhat reasonable....if your rich lol
What to do for fun The school is located in the city so you will never run out of places to go for fun.
Food and Dining The food that is served in the school's cafe is really really good....most of the time. They have a wide range of food to choose from. ex. vegetarian, and non-vegetarian meals.
Dorm Life I had an ok dorm life experience but I'm very quiet and reserved compared to most of the other students in my dorm. The dorms could be better, I've seen most of the campus dorms and some are very very nice but others....Especially the freshmen dorms could be A lot better.
Academic Rigor I'm a Motion picture and television major the classes are grate and the teachers/staff and very helpful.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you do your research on Any school before you decide to invest your money and time into it.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Ok. This can be so unique for so many different people. Some like my brothers choose to stay on computers and video games. Some of my sisters are movie fanatics. Me, I like to explore different places, malls, beaches, love to take pictures and I love thrifting. So, do what you do for fun.
Food and Dining Home cooking all the way for me, sorry I am still spoiled by staying at home.
Dorm Life I live at home, its cheaper for me.
Academic Rigor Even though you can get sucky professors, teachers and advisors, remember it is YOUR education, YOU are PAYING THEM. Have a plan, know your plan and stay true to your own plan, its ok to tweak it and rearrange it so that your degree goals will help you do your best and get good grades. If you need tutoringHELP EXTRA HELP for heavens sake ASK, don't let pride flunk you, or lower your GPA score.
Tips for prospective students Even though an education seems out of reach and quite expensive, take the risk, go to a community college first its cheaper, and get your core classes. If you qualify for loans, get them education is worth the debt but be smart about how much you get and also make sure the school is where you want to be, to much money wasted switching from colleges or go online college a degree is a degree. Don't believe the hype that someone's degree is better because they went to a University vs a community college or that they attended online.
In three sentences It seems to offer unique degrees with a hands on type approach and the fact that I can work toward my degree on line is a huge important factor for me. Graduates tend to get hired by major companies and this is a number one factor for me. Although, it might seem pricey for a University that can be attended anywhere in the USA or global it pays for itself.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus safety is great and is fair when it comes to keeping students safe at the school and making sure if something happens, the campus will help out those students in need.
Greek Life I don't recall any type of Greek Life at the school.
Clubs and Activities There are a lot of fascinating clubs and activities one can do. In the pre-college, I went to Alcatraz, and I went to fisherman's wharf. I also had some fun video game nights with some friends I met. The clubs, they didn't offer any during the pre-college experience, but they have a lot to where students can pick more than one and get involved in the school. Hopefully, when I return, I will get involved in the Christian Student Fellowship at the school.
Great for these types of students Great for students that love art, that want to pursue art and work for big company names and the companies are located in the city of San Francisco.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus None that I can remember. There isn't anything unusual of the school.
Bang for the buck The tuition at the school isn't cheap. It is expensive, unless you are able to get some financial aid (which I didn't get) and if you get grans (which I also didn't get). It is worth it if you live in San Francisco and you live at home and only pay for the tuition because they want the housing bill upfront fully paid.
What to do for fun There is a lot of stuff that can be done in the city. You can walk around the city of San Francisco and explore places like Chinatown or japan town. Also, the city of San Francisco has a lot of history like visiting Alcatraz, a prison used in the early 1930's. Fishermans wharf, the bay area in San Francisco, and you are able to walk around the city and just explore a new environment of the city. Also, at the school, you can meet a lot of new people. There is a lot to do at the dorms, like hangout and play pool, or go to a dorm and play video games or watch movies, and even enjoy the pool the school has.
Food and Dining The food was delicious, but there were times it was repetitive for dinner, but other than that, they have different locations to go and eat besides eating at the same one every day for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Dorm Life The dorm life was great. I have experienced it at a pre college summer course in the summer of 2011. I loved the dorms and I had a great time with the roommate I was assigned. The school will do their best to assign you with people that will have similar interest.
Academic Rigor The classes (from the pre college experience) were not too difficult, but I will find out on how they are as a full time student when I attend the school in the fall of 2012. The classes did help me figure out on what I wanted to do at the school.
Tips for prospective students When you are looking for colleges, make sure they have on what you want and that you will be willing to go to the school and accept all the challenges that come your ways whether its classes, or paying for tuition or having to change your major. Make sure you want to figure out what you want to do before you just apply to a college and say your no longer interested in the school.
In three sentences It is a marvelous school for all types of of art and design. I have experienced the environment of the city and the school and I loved being in the city and exploring a new city and a different life style. At this school, they will be willing to help students study on what they want to become for their future and for the future of all art students.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students AAU online students need to be very self motivated, organized and independent. Look at is as being sort of a freelance artist in a way. You are expected to do the work on your time but there is a deadline to meet. If you don't meet that deadline then you are penalized such as a lower grade immediately!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus If you're an online student, you might have the opportunity to take a local AAU drawing class in person. Check with the online coordinator for that one.
Bang for the buck I think by taking my classes online, I'll be saving money by not commuting and by being more in charge of my class fees and supplies.
Academic Rigor I think it depends on the subject matter and you. For me first semester, I planned on taking 2 classes but at the last minute they switched one of my classes due to an accepted transfer class. So my schedule went from manageable to 24/7 schoolwork. Make sure you're ready to take on the work load.
Tips for prospective students If you're taking online classes, make sure you're proficient at using a digital camera, scanner and resizing software such as photoshop.
In three sentences AAU has a couple of online BA programs. That is why I have selected them. You definitely will need a printer and a scanner.

Categories Comments Clubs and Activities I know there are clubs that relate to the different majors. Being online, it is hard to participate.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Back to what I said above, the school does travel the country to different cities throughout the year to hold workshops for online students, which is pretty great. I haven't made it to one yet, but I intend to.
Bang for the buck I love this school. The instructors are not only teachers, but mentors. Most of them do free lance outside the classroom. I am still in touch with a couple of my instructors for whenever I need a little guidance not relating to school work. The only drawback I personally experience is not being there in person and being able to participate in some of the gatherings and sports events.
What to do for fun The San Francisco area is full of creative and artist things to do and see. There are museums and association and group meetings.
Food and Dining I don't know, I am an online student.
Dorm Life I am taking my classes online. But, from the school news I read, there are always gatherings, sports events and games, and activities to keep the students involved with social life outside the classroom and still in keeping with their major and interests.
Academic Rigor The instructor's mean business when it comes to work, digging deep, and meeting deadlines. Their priority is to teach exactly what you need to know for going into the industry, which includes every bit of the above mentioned things.
Tips for prospective students Be ready to work. If you really want it and have a great passion for it, you will realize how worth it is.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck This school is 100% worth every penny spent on tuition/books/etc. If that is, the student is willing and ready to put forth a hundred and ten percent. It is a fast paced program, and there is a lot of information that is covered in each class. As long as the student is ready upon starting, then I could not imagine someone not enjoying attending AOAU.
What to do for fun I haven't spent much time in San Francisco, so it is rather difficult for me to share this topic with others.
Dorm Life I would not know anything about the dorm life, as I am an online student, however I do know that there is college housing available through the school, and this housing is located in San Francisco, CA. There are a few different housing options available to students as well.
Academic Rigor The work is pretty intense, there is no doubt that a student will remain busy throughout the entire semester, each and every semester. Though, the amount of work assigned to students is not so much so that the student will easily fall behind or anything like that, it's do-able and the fast pace at which the classes move actually makes the semester go by faster which is nice.
Tips for prospective students If you're not sure, or if you just want to give the school a try before delving into a full time schedule, or if you're someone whom does not live in San Francisco but you're interested in obtaining a degree in the Arts or just interested in this school in general, then check out their online program, it's truly astounding.
In three sentences Academy of Art University offers students from all over the world to attend their classes both online and on site. The staff members from AOAU are truly significantly incredible individuals, and it's apparent that they do care for the students well being.

Dorm Life Because I am attending Academy of Art online, I am able to stay in my own home, working on my assignments at any time of the day or night. I am comfortable in my own bed and community.

What to do for fun Get with the other students, they will help you learn and grown.
Food and Dining I go online and do not live on campus.
Dorm Life I go online and do not live on campus.
Academic Rigor This school keeps you busy.
Tips for prospective students While you can work the schedule online around your life, you need to still make time for school.
In three sentences Academy of Art University is amazing. I am getting the education and opportunities that I am unable to get living where I do. I would suggest anyone wanting to get an education in the arts to go here.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The school does a very good job of making students feel safe. Every campus has someone at the door and no matter the time of day adding to the sense of security.
Clubs and Activities There is a plethora of different clubs and activities available to students. Whether it be sports or gaming clubs this school encourages lasting friendships.
Great for these types of students This school is great for students looking to challenge their skills. There will always be a class that teaches you more about what you're good at and what you need to improve on.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Can't think of any, but there is a good sense of family and friendship between the students.
Bang for the buck Although seemingly expensive, in my first year I feel like I've learned so much already and can only begin to imagine all that I'll know once I graduate.
What to do for fun The school offers workshops that help you better yourself as an artist as well as offer an opportunity to learn from your fellow peers at the school
Food and Dining Whether you're on the meal plan or not there are plenty of options.
Dorm Life I didn't personally stay in the dorms, but I've yet to hear anything bad about dorm life.
Academic Rigor Unlike what I've heard from other art schools, Academy of Art really expects the absolute best from their students and the challenge of it really does foster an environment that produces some amazing artists.
Tips for prospective students Be prepared for truly challenging work. Take your first semester to test the waters if you're uncertain about which major is right for you.
In three sentences Academy of Art has been everything I was looking for in a school and more. Despite the long hours and hard work, there hasn't been a single day that I didn't feel that this was the school for me. Every class I've attended has taught me something new both in the arts and where I stand as a student.

Categories Comments What to do for fun When I got the manuals and information when I was first looking into AAU, San Francisco looked full of art and culture and it definitely is an exciting place to be if you are pursing the arts!
Food and Dining Again I do not live on campus beings an online student but I give four stars because every place has a down fall in food.
Dorm Life I am going to give five stars though I am an online student and have never been in the dorms. I say five stars because everyone at AAU is friendly.
Academic Rigor The professors will challenge you to do your best and push you beyond your limits at times but it is worth it because your work will reflect the new skills you learned.
Tips for prospective students If you are taking classes online, make sure you put forth your best effort and participate as much as possible. You will learn a lot from your other classmates and your professor just by reading their feedback and interacting.
In three sentences The instructors are great; they are working in the fields you are studying. Everything is easy to use online and you are still getting the same education as on campus. I love attending AAU!

Great for these types of students Art loving, computer and printing savvy, creative, and have money.

Bang for the buck Little more buck than bang. Hard to say, for the school is good, but not sure if it is worth the price tag.
What to do for fun Go out to art events, shows, and personal activities.
Dorm Life Never lived in the dorms.
Tips for prospective students Have many scholarships and grants. Stay on top of work at all times. And go over the top on any and all projects.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The AAU offers a number you can call if you're ever in a bad situation or lost and someone will come get you. you can feel safe knowing there are people out there who are there to help. Also there's a lot of security, and they're attentive to the surroundings.
Great for these types of students If your a book worm or like research and movies and whatnot, the library is awesome. they even have a theatre you can rent out with your friends with movies you can rent out too !
Bang for the buck Movie nights at the Urban Knights Cafe- they have free movies that are new and offer drinks and popcorn. cant complain about a free movie on a big screen with some friends. the gym- The gym is free!! it has everything you'll ever need and will never need to pay for a membership again as long as your a student. not only is there a gym and a pool for free, but they also offer classes like dance and yoga and sometimes massages!
What to do for fun There are so many things to do for fun in SF. usually the dorms are putting on activities and there are forum boards with info and websites. If all else fails, pull up the computer and search things to do in San Fransisco, you'll find something!
Food and Dining The foods not bad, but i wouldn't get sucked into the food program unless you have to. If you have allergies or a sensitive stomach, definitely stay away from the meal plan at the dorms, its kind of a cafeteria set up, so sometimes the main meals might have something your allergic too and the only other option is something less appealing. i would go for a dorm with a kitchen if you have this problem, or knight cash.
Dorm Life The dorms are fun ! if you are a first time student and coming from out of state, i would suggest it! don't get sucked in to the rumors of each building. they are all an experience in themselves. You should be clean in your room, keeping your clothes off the floor and stuff like that, bed bugs and other critters can get you if you're not careful. at AAU, you have to be full time to stay in the dorms. so be aware of this, it can be a handful, but then again, not worrying about your bills equals out the weight sometimes. but all in all , dorms are great! i might go back to them soon.
Academic Rigor The courses are challenging enough to keep you interested and on your toes. sometimes four courses can be a bit much, for some it can seem impossible to do, but its possible for some. Really it all depends on time management and how badly you want to succeed. If you love what your doing, its more fun than a chore.
Tips for prospective students Make sure that you really know what you want to do before you enroll here. if you think you want to test the waters in a community college first , you should. This is a school where you kind of should be sure you know you want to be there, there's a lot of money and time involved and you cant transfer back to community colleges. just make sure you do your research well before making a decision.
In three sentences Academy of art university is a fun, hands on, real, and exciting. Your getting to experience the city of San Francisco while learn about what you love from people who love what they do. A real learning experience.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus safety program is very effective. They will pick you up if you are lost and even if its as late as 3 am. No one can enter the building without an id and there is always some nearby if you need assistance.
Clubs and Activities african student union speak out sororities/frats gaming fashion LGBT
Great for these types of students The school is great for deep thinkers and often considered weird people. Here you will be amongst friends
Bang for the buck its expensive but worth your while
What to do for fun There are many clubs that you can join on campus. Also there are many night clubs surrounding the area that can be enjoyable as well.
Food and Dining The food is good for the most part but I rather cook myself.
Dorm Life In the dorms you will get to know a lot people who share you interest. One thing that is bothersome is that there are a lot of rules for the dorms. Some of the rules seem unnecessary.
Academic Rigor The work is very tasking but is worth while if you love what you are doing. There is strict policy on absences and you can be given a F if you are absent more than 3 times. On a positive not you do not have to come to the school with any prior experience in your field.
Tips for prospective students A tip before attending the Academy of Art is to know exactly what you want to do career wise. It is not a school that you want to waste of a lot time at. Not only is it costly it is very specific to your career so every moment is precious.
In three sentences The Academy of Art has been one of the best experiences in my life. It opened the door for me to study something I love in a small and personal environment. Also it is the only art school in the country that offered a sports program.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I feel very safe at this school. You are required to have a school badge to enter any of the buildings, and there are campus shuttles that run throughout the city.
Clubs and Activities Many different clubs and activities constantly taking place through the school. And AAU is one of few art schools that has a sports team.
Great for these types of students Hard workers eager to learn.
Bang for the buck I love this school, and they do offer many different activities for students to get to know each other and have fun, but the school is very expensive, and some teachers do not take full advantage of the short class times to teach all that they can.
What to do for fun Academy of Act offers many different student activities, from sporting evens, movie nights, to dance mixers.
Food and Dining There are a few cafes that the school offers, with food that is moderate.
Tips for prospective students This is not a school that you can slack off at, come here, and strive to learn and work as much as possible.
In three sentences I love this school, and I feel that I am learning an adequate amount, and that I am likely to find a job after I finish at this school. However, I think that this school is far too expensive for what it offers. I wish that Academy of Art would help students more in finding scholarships and grants.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is really important in such a big city and The Academy of Art University does a great job at insuring the safety of its students.
Clubs and Activities The Academy has MANY clubs and activities to look into. New clubs are constantly being made by new students who are passionate about what they do. Its guaranteed that each student can find one that they would fit into.
Great for these types of students Academy of Art has a great environment for learning and having fun. I would recommend this school to anyone looking into a career in any field of art. You are introduced to many different kinds of people and cultures, there is an endless amount of inspiration coming from every corner in the city. This school is also very helpful for people who speak English as a second language, with special classes dedicated to those students and their needs. Also, the school has a great workshop program which allows students to work one on one with instructors on homework assignments. I personally go to these workshops two to three times a week. They're great!
What to do for fun Academy of Art has many fun activities that go on throughout the week. Whether its attending the school sports games, going to yoga, or eating popcorn with your friends at movie night, there will always be something for people to go to when they need a short break from classes.
Food and Dining The cafeteria is located in a central part of the school and is easy to access and find. Shuttle buses are constantly passing by the main building meaning, it is only a few minutes away from any dorm. The food is good and the eating area is kept relatively clean.
Dorm Life The dormitories are clean and vary in styles and locations. In general the dorms are very roomy and comfortable. You get the opportunity to meet people from different majors which in turn can inspire you as a artist and help you connect with other fields of art.
Academic Rigor Academy of Art is a challenging school, it requires students to be mentally, physically, and emotionally prepared to explore the boundaries of art, whether its learning about them or breaking them down, the Academy will help you find out where you fit in the world as an artist.
Tips for prospective students Work hard everyday, live and breath your art, walk into class with an open mind, learn to take criticism, be passionate, be fearless, take chances, and never doubt yourself as an artist. Our differences are what set us apart, and they are the same qualities that will make you stand out.
In three sentences Academy of Art University is a diverse and friendly school where the students are encouraged to explore and develop there artistic styles. I've been at the Academy for two semesters and I have never come across such inspiring and passionate teachers, all of whom are currently working in the field that I'm studying. The school offers many opportunities for the students to succeed, and I couldn't be happier with my decision to attend the Academy of Art University.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Each building is secured with ID scan-access only. Other than that, security can be found in most buildings to overlook anything that goes wrong or to help you if you are lost. A phone number is provided to all students if he/she feels the need to have a security guard walk him/her to their dorm after hours.
Greek Life There is a fraternity and sorority that students can join through certain criteria that each group requires.
Clubs and Activities There is a wide variety of clubs that are run by AAU's very own students. You can easily find one that relates to your major and can help you to build connections and experiences beneficial to your future. You can find a full list of clubs and activities located on their website.
Great for these types of students San Francisco is diverse in race, culture, sexuality- there is so much inspiration that comes into enrolling at AAU. Even for students that have difficulty being creative, there is something bound to influence you to help with your type of art. Don't be hesitant to approach people because everybody is unique there and every individual shares the same passion for art as you do.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Each building is dedicated to specific majors. However do not be alarmed if you find yourself placed with students that don not have the same major as you. Some main locations that students may want to check out are: Library, Mac Lab, ARC is located in 180 New Montgomery / Financial Aid is at 150 Hayes / Admissions at 79 New Montgomery and there are 4 Utrecht stores located near/in the school as well.
Bang for the buck As art students, we are required to purchase a lot of materials to succeed. When people hear coupons, people think they are only for people who can not afford it. NO THEY ARE NOT- when you see coupons provided by Utrecht sometimes lying around the campus, pick one up. You never know when you might need it. Using coupons is a way to save money to buy other items. Even a dollar salvaged from the coupon can get you tool that can last all semester. So research where to get the best deals first!
What to do for fun San Francisco is a huge city and you can find yourself sightseeing to having a night out at clubs, parties etc. For international or out-of-state students that do not necessarily know where to go to hang, AAU has a group known as Campus Life that plans events for students to do. Events range from informational guest speakers to relaxing massages or coming to watch bands play.
Food and Dining Academy of Art University does NOT have their own cafeteria like typical UC and CSU colleges provide. There are tables, some vending machines, and a couple of microwaves, but to eat, most students bring their own lunch. Some students walk to nearby restaurants or fast food chains as well. There is an Urban Knights Cafe owned by the school, but it may be difficult to go eat there and come back on class on time.
Dorm Life Housing on-campus costs as a high as $7000 per semester. The dorms are noÂ?t the best, but they provide the essentials to giving students a place to stay while they attend AAU. Originally the university was only one building, but as time passed, buildings around SF were purchased and became part of the campus. Living in dorms can be anywhere from walking distance to class to riding the city transportation systems or using the school shuttle bus.
Academic Rigor The workload is strenuous and there is no room for procrastination. You may find yourself with only a few moments of personal time, so if you aÂ?re someone who goes by 'play first, work later'; this school is definitely not for you. Each assignment requires an estimate of 15-20 hours depending on how much you aim for a high grade. In fact, instructors tell students early on that receiving an A grade is nearly impossible and most students are given (average) C's. The teachers themselves are professionals, but they lack teaching skills. Other students mainly give feedback and it is up to you to receive their criticism as a positive thing to better yourself.
Tips for prospective students This school is extremely expensive compared to if you were to start off in a community college. AAU is one of the least expensive of art schools, but most students enrolled here depend on financial aid. Even if your tuition is paid in full, materials that are required for the class will decrease your wallet-size. This is something that many potential students should consider because unless you're willing to sacrifice your time and money, transferring credits may not be accepted at other schools.
In three sentences Academy of Art University is the place to be if you are determined to succeed in all aspects that the school throws at you. The workload is rigorous and consuming- no time for procrastination and little personal time. If you have a deep passion to continue art as a career, AAU will aid you along the way to reaching your fullest potential with the skills they teach and the networks that you will develop.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus Safety is available 24 hours a day. Even though the dorms and school buildings are at various locations, Safety personnel are always available to help with transportation issues.
Greek Life I am not aware of any.
Clubs and Activities There are various ethnic clubs as well as religious, sports, and hobby clubs.
Great for these types of students AAU is great for non-traditional learners who prefer hands-on learning.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Urban Cafe is a great place to hang out and meet fellow students.
Bang for the buck I am a music production major. I like the fact that several of my classes are taught by teachers that have first hand life experience. I also have opportunities to have hands-on learning by working with sound boards and the latest computer technology and programs.
What to do for fun Being in a large city there is a lot of extra curricular things to visit and see. There is the Embarcadero, Pier 39, The San Francisco Giants and AT&T Park. If you enjoy art and museums, there are always displays and shows around town.
Food and Dining Some of the dorm buildings have an onsite cafe which serves 3 meals a day. There are also a lot of small restaurants, coffee shops, and pubs throughout the city. Many of the restaurants participate in the schools Knight Kash program where you can preload a card and use it to purchase food.
Dorm Life The dorms consist of various apartment like buildings located throughout the city. You are able to choose the type of dorm you prefer or can afford. Whether you choose to room with 3 others or share a bathroom with another room, there are several types to choose from.
Academic Rigor There is homework every week and tests or quizzes often. Depending on your major and the particular class, it may seem more challenging than others.
Tips for prospective students If you plan to live in San Francisco while attending AAU, it can be expensive. Plan accordingly for housing costs, food and neccessities. Since the campus is not just in one location of the city like some state universities, expect to walk or take transportation to some of your classes. The school does offer transportation to class locations and dorms.
In three sentences AAU is great for students wanting to earn a degree for something that is already their passion.

What to do for fun Share art with others and go to local events.
Food and Dining The school is located all over down town so there are plenty of dining opportunities at a fair price for students all around.
Dorm Life Everyone is really nice a easy to connect with. It makes great relationships for later in the art world.
Academic Rigor Very high standing classes that if you don't know what you got yourself into, you may struggle with the grading system.
Tips for prospective students It always helps to know someone already attending to get the lay down of how everything works, and though there is a lot to do, don't be afraid of it.

Clubs and Activities This school offers so many activities and clubs. If you want you can even create own!
Great for these types of students AAU is a school for anyone with passion and a true love for the arts. It's open door policy leaves endless possibilities for incoming students to truly spread their wings.
What to do for fun They have Movie Knight, where people come to eat and watch movies. They also have sporting events and many clubs to participate in, or even create your own.
Food and Dining Academy of Art University has cafes that offer many multifarious foods for students to indulge in. They also have Knight Kash that students can use at certain restaurants around town.
Dorm Life The dorms are beautiful, small, but nice.
Academic Rigor This school is awesome because they actually have hired teachers that are currently in the field(s) that we aspire to be in!
Tips for prospective students My advice for students is just to really take full advantage of this school. They offer sports, clubs, and many activities.

Categories Comments Campus Safety It is hard for them to control since the campus is the city. But they are very good about only letting students into all buildings and making people sign in to dorms with no overnight guests unless approved. Campus shuttles run frequently.
Greek Life I don't think we have a Greek Life.
Clubs and Activities School has lots of clubs and activities. Free yoga classes, zumba, running, dance etc. Every year cheap trips to Tahoe and Yosemite.
Great for these types of students Great for art students who want to live in San Francisco. Only for driven people, if you aren't sure what you want to do don't go here.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The campus is the whole city. They own about 48 buildings all over. Bay to Breakers is an annual 12k run/ costume contest/ party. This is something to experience.
Bang for the buck It is an expensive school. Even if it is a good education I don't think it should cost this much.
What to do for fun San Francisco is filled with fun things to do. If you are bored it is not the citys fault. Festivals, live music, yoga classes, sports games, bars, clubs, etc.
Food and Dining The dining halls are ok. For the price you mine as well just go to the grocery store but if you don't have a kitchen then get a meal plan.
Dorm Life The dorms I lived in, Half Moon Lofts, were really nice. The loft style 21+ apartments fit 4-5 people. I would recommend here or Bluxome over any of the 18+ dorms.
Academic Rigor Design is hard to give grades, it is all opinion based. If you get a C that is average. A B is above average and an A means the teacher would hire you for a job.
Tips for prospective students Know what major you want before going to this school. Normally it takes about 5 years to get your Bachelor's Degree so if you switch majors it will take a very long time. You get out of it with what you put into it.
In three sentences Overall this is a good art school, each department is very different depending on your major. The teaching method is basically figure it out on your own. It is not a school to teach you, only to critique your work. The only bad thing is it is a very slow process to graduate.

Categories Comments Campus Safety All the buildings has security entrance. You need your student ID to open the door electronically. If you do not have, you need to sign. I did not experience any security problem from the outside. But there were some sad experience from the outside. One of my friends got her bag including money and final projects (!) stolen.
Clubs and Activities I do not have any activity in any club because of the pretty busy schedule however as I know the school has very good activities in different clubs.
Great for these types of students It is a great school for the students who can spend all her/his time for the art.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus It is an urban school but has a lot of campuses. All the buildings are located around San Francisco. But it could be better if the school has one big campus that includes all majors and departments. Shuttles run around the city during the classes but it means spending your time on the way. It is a private school and deserves better building that has synergy with all departments in one place.
Bang for the buck I am proud of being an Academy student. It definitely deserves the money that you spend. However I wish it could do lower the price. If you do not have scholarship, it is pretty hard to pay all the money.
What to do for fun The school focuses in all athletics. It has a lot of student team for fun.
Food and Dining Unfortunately, Academy has no cafe in most of the campuses. You need to bring your own lunch, or eat at outside.
Dorm Life I do not live in dormitory, but have friends living there. As I know they are pleased to live in dorm.
Academic Rigor It is not an easy art school. You will sweat. However, success is %90 sweat, %10 talent.
Tips for prospective students I strongly recommend to be a member of Facebook group of Academy. It prepares you to have some idea about the school before you start your first day. All students share feelings, ideas, needs, anything that you might need there. I also would like to remind you that studio classes usually need expensive tools from art stores. Even though it depends on the classes, just prepare yourself to spend some money except food, dining, accommodation, tuition, etc.
In three sentences Being in Academy is a great feeling with amazing artists and instructors. It has a pretty professional environment in all campuses. Since it is an urban school in San Francisco, you have already been in a city that has an artistic view.
