Great for these types of students

The Appalachian community is a very laid-back, environmentally aware area. This college is great for students who enjoy the outdoors, cultural diversity, and the simple things in life.

    Tips for prospective students

You will know if the college is right for you! I absolutely recommend taking a tour and/or even staying a night at all of your potential college choices. There is really no way to know for sure unless you give every option a chance to be the right choice. You will know where you feel comfortable and hopefully have as great an experience as I'm having.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition, at any college is definitely a lot more expensive then it used to be. Being from out-of-state, there is no denying that Appalachian was the more expensive college choice of where I was accepted. However, I think that makes me very qualified to say that it is worth the extra money! For me, being happy and loving every day of college is well worth the difference in out-of-state tuition than settling for just any college.

    Am enjoying being here

Being from the beach, I was a little worried about Appalachians' preceding reputation for cold weather. I was also concerned about the transition from a city to a more rural area. Needless to say, as soon as I arrived on the campus I felt immediately at home. There are plenty of fun recreational things to do in Boone. Hiking, skiing, snowboarding (I took that as a class last semester!) As for the cold, yes, it is very cold, but Ive decided if the only complaint I have about my college is the chilly weather, that makes me pretty lucky. Overall, the area is absolutely breath taking and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

    Am learning a lot

Appalachian State is not your typical college learning experience. When I was searching for the right college I was really looking for a school that not only prepared me academically for life after college but also taught me things that aren't written in textbooks. At Appalachian you definitely get both learning experiences. The professors are great and actually care if you do well. Most of the fellow students are like-minded and similarly motivated to be well accomplished. Overall, Appalachian offers the perfect well-rounded college experience that prepares your for both the work force and life general.

Great for these types of students

Anyone! Especially those that love the mountains or just want a great college experience!

    Tips for prospective students

Apply for early registration and you have a better chance of getting in! With the amount of people applying growing every year, it's important to get your application in early, as well as any scholarships or financial aid through the university.

    Am enjoying being here

I absolutely love being at App State! The campus is so beautiful, and there are so many things to do. You can go to the Student Union and hang out in the coffee shop, or if it is an exceptionally pretty day, it's great just sitting outside enjoying the amazing Boone weather. At night, you can usually catch a movie for just a dollar or even go see great local bands and more at the on-campus night club, Legends. On Saturdays during the fall, you can go support the Mountaineers as they play football in Kidd Brewer Stadium or any of the other numerous sports team that App has during the year. And if you want to get off campus for a while, you are just a few minutes away from downtown Boone, which is a great little town in itself. You've got skiing and snowboarding close by during the winter, and you can always find somewhere to go sledding on a snow day! App also has some of the most amazing people. I have become friends with so many great people here. I don't think I would want to go anywhere but Appalachian!

    Am learning a lot

The professors at Appalachian are great! They really care about the material they are teaching and about the students in the class. They are more than glad to answer questions and provide help both in and outside the glass. They really enjoy teaching, and it shows in the classroom.

Great for these types of students

No matter what type of person you are you will have a great group of friends and love the social life. There are a lot of people that love the environment but this is not to say every student goes hiking in their free time. The number of fraternities, sororities, clubs alone show how diverse the interests of the students are, and how any type of student will feel at home at App State.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you take the tour. The guides are very knowledgable and you can learn so much about the school. Winters are not as bad as everyone claims. It does get cold and windy but as long as you have a quality coat you'll be fine. Just make sure you get involved and you'll have the best four years of your life.

    Bang for the buck

By far and away Appalachian State is one of the cheapest schools in the state. To my knowledge it is second only to Chapel Hill. This is not to say that because it is a value it looks cheap or the education received is less than the rest of the schools in the state. App is a beautiful campus with the best conditions and every student receives an excellent education.

    Am enjoying being here

I love being at App. There is never a dull moment and tons of things to do. The football games are awesome, especially since we win so much, and are a great way to spend Saturdays. The location of the school alone promotes adventures from rock climbing to waterfall jumping to rafting down a river. Freshmen are very welcomed and in no time will have tons of friends. I have lived on campus two years and each floor is a small close community. There are more than one hundred clubs and the Greek life at App is a lot of fun!

    Am learning a lot

Appalachian is a great learning community. The professors are incredibly dedicated to the students and are some of the best in their respected fields. At times they even know a bit too much but if you slow them down you'll be fine in the class. The classroom environment is great but the professors are not afraid to venture outside and use the campus and mountains to help students learning. With only three semesters in college so far at least three of my classes have had lessons outside.

Great for these types of students

People who love the mountains, people who want to pursue music, education, or exercise science (they have some of the most advanced research in that field). I'm not going for any of those majors, but I think that those have the most people. People who love large but intimate campus communities. People who can handle the cold :)

    Tips for prospective students

Don't miss scholarship deadlines :) Don't wait until the last minute to sign up for orientation. They fill up quick, and the First Year Seminars (which are required) fill up too, so the late ones end up having to wait until second semester to take it.

    Bang for the buck

Had I applied when I should have for merit scholarships, it would have been easier. Don't miss those deadlines! Other than that, they're willing to work with you however they can.

    Will enjoy being here

If you love the mountains, a large but intimate campus community, and a small college town with tons of opportunity to get involved on and off campus then ASU is perfect. I can't get enough of the mountains and the outlets they have for student employment or just hanging out and having a good time are tough to beat. It's just a very intimate community, very personable.

    Will learn a lot

Since I have not started classes there yet, I can't speak for how much I will learn. However, at orientation the students who led us around on tours and helped advise us on our schedules talked only about how much they learned from their professors and how willing the professors and academic advisers were to make sure you succeeded. They especially emphasized personal responsibility- no one will help those who don't want to be helped. That stood out to me because I have always held myself accountable for my academics and extracurriculars.

Great for these types of students

Its great for people who love the outdoors and the mountains. It has a lot of different majors but if you are looking for Recreation Management or things like that, it is a great school. Overall a great school that all types of people will love. However, if you don't like snow or cold weather I would not suggest Boone. Other than that it is a great school in a fun town that anyone will love.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure that Appalachian is a place that you can see your self for 4 years. It is such a fantastic place but if it doesn't have the kind of things you like to do it will not be as fun for you. Just be sure that you get involved in all that the school has for you and you take all it offers to your advantage.

    Bang for the buck

I think I am getting everything I want from Appalachian and it is very worth the money. I am from out of state so I am paying more money but I think that its worth it. I am getting something that I know I couldn't get in Florida so it is worth it to me.

    Am enjoying being here

Appalachian State has so much going on at all times. There are over 300 clubs on campus and there is always an event or concert going on. I love being in Boone as well. Its such a fun town where you can enjoy time downtown or just hang out. Overall its been a fun time living on campus the first year because they offer so much stuff for you to do or get involved in. As long as you find something that you enjoy doing you will have a great time!

    Am learning a lot

Appalachian State has some of the best professors and teachers. They all truly know what they are talking about and they all have a passion for what they are teaching. I have learned more from them than I ever did in high school. You also have the ability to form lasting relationships with your professors which allows you to gain real world information and a perspective of what you can do with your major once you are out of school. I have learned so much in my first year at Appalachian and believe that I will continue to learn so much during my time there.

Great for these types of students

Anyone who wants a great education, a social life, and a beautiful campus. Also, the best chancellor ever!

    Tips for prospective students

Apply early, and make sure you get your scholarship application in. It has an early deadline, don't procrastinate. Visit the campus, you will fall in love.

    Bang for the buck

Slightly expensive, but worth it. You will get your money's worth.

    Am enjoying being here

Honestly I am not really bored, ever. There is stuff to do. Whether you are playing frisbee, enjoying greek life, or just hanging out in the lobby, you will enjoy your time spent. $1 movies every week is nice too.

    Am learning a lot

Great teachers, but some classes may not be challenge enough for some. The General Education Program will drive you crazy, but honestly it is worth it. You may not think you are learning or being challenged, but you are.

Great for these types of students

Lovers of the outdoors, rural or suburban communities, teaching and children, family environments, kind communities, southern hospitality, diversity, art, hills, McAlister's Deli, and much more!

    Tips for prospective students

Prospective students should apply to Appalachian with the greatest of their credentials. It is no easy school to be accepted into, nor is it as competitive as Chapel Hill. Any activities and extracurriculars one might have been committed to are great advantages to your application. And remember, bring your snow gear because we see flakes from October to April. With a diverse community, diverse climate, and wonderful classrooms, I guarantee you'll enjoy what Boone, NC has to offer you from Appalachian State University.

    Bang for the buck

Appalachian offers high-quality learning experiences with prestigious degrees such as those from Walker College of Business, Cratis Williams Graduate Programs, and the new and improved version of Appalachian's teaching school. With a degree from Appalachian, you not only make a lasting impression on future employers but you also find many Alumni who are greatly appreciative to find a fellow Mountaineer in you! A great community with a high-quality education for minimal university costs.

    Am enjoying being here

Growing up in the mountains, I was highly intrigued by the sights and experiences that Boone, North Carolina offered. After living here for just over a year, I have discovered what a perfect place Boone is for my lifestyle. I am able to relax when necessary, enjoy social time, study, and reach personal goals while in Boone. Truly one of the best decisions of my lifetime to come to Appalachian State University.

    Am learning a lot

Appalachian State University does a phenomenal job of embracing the culture of small town, Boone, North Carolina while still acknowledging and celebrating the diversity of its students and faculty members. Appalachian offers a great range of courses while creating easy pathways to focused majors and career goals. If you love the mountains, a variety of weather conditions, nice classmates, and a relaxing experience, Appalachian offers all of these things while giving access to productive and enjoyable learning environments.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure Appalachian is the right fit for you! The most important thing when applying to college is making sure you apply where you would be happiest and learn the most. If Appalachian or any other college has a weak program in your area of interest, perhaps you should consider going elsewhere. Less importantly but still a consideration, if you hate winter or love big cities then take your personal preferences into account when making a college decision.

    Bang for the buck

Appalachian is definitely one of the cheapest public schools in North Carolina, and for my personal major (Flute Perofrmance) it is definitely the best in the state for the cost! I also wanted somewhere that could challenge me both musically and academically, so Appalachian is a better fit for me than a strictly music school. It has a great honors program, too!

    Am enjoying being here

The mountains are gorgeous. The students are the nicest I have ever seen at a public college. The Chancellor is absolutely amazing, wonderfully friendly, and incredibly passionate. I have only experienced two semesters worth of teachers, but I have never had a professor who isn't extremely helpful and caring about their students in and out of class.

    Am learning a lot

Sometimes I feel like the classes are a bit slow paced, but looking back at the end of the semester I find I end up learning a ton without realizing it. I have gotten so much better in my major! Also, being in the Honors Program, I have the opportunity to go to extra lectures and take honors courses.

    Campus Safety

campus safety is one of the top priorities for appalachian state university. boone police along with the university officers make the campus an incredibly safe area. they try to keep an open line of communication with the students so that we can quickly be updated on any recent events that we need to know about. i feel totally safe here.

    Greek Life

personally i do not have any experience with the greek life at appalachian but from what i hear we have some of the best chapters around. a few of my friends rushed this year and they have nothing but good feedback to give; they absolutely love the fraternity/sorority life.

    Clubs and Activities

appalachian state university is a school that harbors a large variety of students with interests that vary across the board. multiple club expos are held throughout the year where students can find countless clubs to sign up for and be a part of.

Great for these types of students

appalachian state is great for students who enjoy a personal and hands on education. everyone at the university is helpful and friendly and if you are looking to make life long friends and bonds then appalachian is the school for you. i have already made friends that i will stay in contact with for years to come. the surrounding area also has a lot to do in terms of outdoor activities, so if you enjoy hiking and other nature-oriented activities you would love it up here in the mountains.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

a unique location on campus can be found under rivers street that connects west campus to east campus. there are two free expression tunnels that lead under the road where students are free to express their beliefs, usually in the form of spray paint.

    Bang for the buck

appalachian state has been named one of the best values in terms of public universities by multiple magazines and surveys. you can receive a quality education for a very reasonable cost here at appalachian.

    What to do for fun

appalachian state offers a ton of programs that students can take advantage of. there are multiple clubs expos throughout the year and greek life is constantly recruiting. downtown boone is but a short walk from campus and has a multitude of shops, restaurants, and clubs to satisfy any college student looking for something to do.

    Food and Dining

the food and dining experience at appalachian state university is one to be saluted. the university has multiple dining halls on campus and the food is delicious. appalachian tries to satisfy multiple goals and interests by buying food locally, promoting slow food and other sustainable programs, as well as offering vegetarian and vegan options.

    Dorm Life

dorm life at appalachian state is an amazing experience. the university is constantly improving and renovating the residence halls and other facilities around campus. everything can be found in close proximity to the dorms including: multiple gyms, the library and multiple dining halls. the university is constantly in communication with its students looking for ways to improve their dorm life experience.

    Academic Rigor

academic rigor will vary anywhere you go and that is simply the truth of it. every professor has his or her way of doing things and certain classes will come harder for you than others. overall i would say that my courses at appalachian state university have challenged me mentally and have pressed me to push myself in a multiple aspects of my life.

    Tips for prospective students

for any of you prospective students thinking about coming to appalachian state university i suggest you make sure to bring an extra layer of clothing because it gets pretty cold up here. another piece of advice i would offer is to attend as many campus tours and other prospective student programs as possible, because they really do help get you situated into the life of a college student.

    In three sentences

appalachian state university is a wonderful school that fosters an amazing environment for learning and personal growth. in such a short time i have grown to love this university and the small college town that surrounds it as my own home away from home. appalachian is one of the fastest growing colleges in america and i am proud that i can get a personal and quality education here in boone.

    What to do for fun

there is so much to do for fun on campus! almost every week, they have a different movie playing from thursday-saturday in i.g. greer and it only costs $1 to go. the movies are always fairly recent too! there are also a lot of activities to get involved in on the floor of your dorm. for example, my floor has dance parties in the lobby about once a month. they are so fun! char is a club that a lot of people like to go to on thursday nights because that is college night. of course, there are also so many clubs to get involved in! if there is something you love, there is a club for it. also, intramural sports teams are so much fun. they have intramural teams for ton of different sports and a lot of people are involved in those.

    Food and Dining

the food at central (the main dining hall) is definitely the best. they have chick-fil-a everyday, who wouldn't like that?! but there is also a huge variety of other kinds of food, such as burritos, salads, pizza, subs, etc. mcalisters is definitely the most popular place to get food in my opinion. it had the best sandwiches and mac and cheese is delicious from there! trivette (the older, smaller dining hall) is pretty nasty except for breakfast and salads.

    Dorm Life

dorm life is amazing and is a great experience to have. i most definitely recommend living in a dorm for at least your first year of college!! it is very convenient because you are always close to your classes and other on campus activities. i live in one of the smallest dorms and i still love it. i do not recommend rooming with your best friend from high school, because you will get sick of each other quick!

    Academic Rigor

college is definitely not easy by any aspects. although, in all honesty, if you work hard, study, and take lots of notes, then you will be fine. i definitely recommend keeping up by taking notes in the book, it will help you understand a lot more. also, make sure to go to class!! most classes do not take attendance so a lot of people just do not show up, but lecture is where you learn the most so even if it is boring, just go.

    Tips for prospective students

i definitely recommend going to ratemyprofessors.com before signing up for classes. it is an awesome website that will tell you what professors to take and they are spot on with accuracy. only take the teachers that have good reviews, or you will regret it. i also recommend using the library. the library is an awesome place to study and i actually get more work done in there than in my room. coffee is also a must-have!

    In three sentences

appalachian is an awesome school to go to, i love it! the atmosphere is very friendly and if you get the right professor then you will have a great class experience. the best part is that even though the campus is pretty big, you can get just about anywhere within ten minutes so that is nice.

Great for these types of students

For students who like a friendly envioronment, beautiful landscapes, and/or football: Appalachian is the school for you. They also have a really good music program.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are planning on applying, make sure you get everything turned in on time and know about auditions and whatever else you may need to do to apply. It has become a lot harder to be accepted at Appalachian.

Great for these types of students

The only things to do on campus are clubs and greek life events. If you want a real sense of community, go somewhere else. It is also cold, bring a nice jacket.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are a straight A student from High School and you are just looking for more A's, then App is perfect, but if you want to learn a lot, I would either look somewhere else or join the honors program. My classes are insanely easy. I am not being challenged, so I am transferring.

Great for these types of students

This college is great for potential students that want an App family! It is also good for people that love the outdoors, or love to help the community. While it is great for me to talke about which types of students belong here, I think it is just necessary for you to be yourself at all times and you will be accepted no matter what! Appalachians fellow student body does not care that you try to fit in with us by wearing the same clothes, or talking the same, or even acting the same way. What we care about is YOU being the best YOU you can be!

    Tips for prospective students

If anyone is thinking about coming to Appalachian State, I would tell him/her to be sure that he/she can withstand cold, wintery weather, even in the middle of February! Schedule a campus tour where the embassador's can help you to understand what Appalachian is all about and can give you the history and in's and out's of what goes on at APP! As Appalachian is growing with our new residence halls and educational buildings, it is also getting harder to get accepted into this college. If you really, really want to come here, be sure to stand out! Be a nice, well rounded person that can balance school and extracurriculars!

    Bang for the buck

I think that Appalachian is one of the best colleges on the face of the earth! Anything you pay for at App is completely and totally worth it! The experiences, friends, and most of all the knowledge that you will gain from this college is one that is unforgettable. Although it is worth it, it does not hurt at all to apply for scholarships. Cappex is one of the many scholarship websites that actually help and I am so glad I have an account with them.

    Am enjoying being here

At App State there are plenty of friends to make and lots of places to go. I totally enjoy the close and intimate setting atop the mountain. There are many ways to get involved in the community through our online database called Appalachian and the Community Together (ACT). What I really like about Appalachian is the atmosphere and how it is a change of pace from the beach where I was born. In the mountains there are many cold nights but the college experience and the unbelievable people you get to meet are beyond worth it.

    Am learning a lot

At Appalachian State University the professors and the students really care about you a lot. From study groups to making sure you are present in class, we really are one big family. Even though the courses are rigorous, the professors still find a way to challenge the students. I really enjoy being in the challenging atmosphere because it motivates me to focus on my studies. When I came to Appalachian, I was looking for a change in climate, and a change in the people that are like-minded. I wanted people that have different dreams and aspirations but still shared the same goals as I do. Appalachian State has the whole entire package and more! It has been a blast attending this school and I cannot wait to spend the rest of my college career here at Appalachian State University.

Outdoorsy people! There are plenty of places to ski, snowboard, and hike! The area is amazing if you enjoy photography. Take a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway if you truly want to experience the beauty of the Appalachian region. If you like football, then come on down! You'll see an explosion of Mountaineer spirit on game days! Come and check out our baseball, softball, soccer, and basketball teams as well. Appalachian has everything, so everyone should visit us in Boone!

    Tips for prospective students

Come and visit the campus. Better yet, come and visit in the fall during football season! The campus will be alive! You'll see the overwhelming spirit of the Mountaineers as they tailgate and prepare to support our awesome football team. Also, the area is absolutely stunning in the fall, so it's the best time to visit.

    Bang for the buck

The quality of professors and the university in general makes me wonder why the tuition is so low. I still cannot figure out why! Appalachian has amazing professors, a beautiful campus with a brand new facilities, and a great surrounding community! If tuition is a major factor and you're looking for a great school, Appalachian is your best bet!

    Am enjoying being here

Boone is a great college town. Whether it's a beautiful day in the spring or a cold day in December, there is always something to do. Head out to Sanford Mall and play ultimate frisbee when it's warm. Travel to the nearby ski resorts and go skiing and snowboarding when it's snowy! There are plenty of places to have fun with friends.

    Am learning a lot

The quality of education you will receive at Appalachian is fantastic. The professors sincerely care about each student and their education. My professors worked to ensure that their respective subjects were taught effectively and were understood by their students. Also, every professor I've had has encouraged my classmates and I to think critically and form our own opinions. They are an excellent resource and are excellent at what they do!

Great for these types of students

People who love the outdoors, the small town atmosphere, friendly students and faculty, small class sizes, a great football team, a great marching band, lot of school spirit, meeting a wide variety of diverse people and beautiful mountain scenery will feel right at home here and fall in love with Appalachian State University, and the quaint little town of Boone, North Carolina.

    Tips for prospective students

ASU is great for every kind of student. Prospective students should take a tour of the campus. The Student Ambassadors are very knowledgeable and will answer all questions and put to rest any doubt one might have about attending this school. Also, take the opportunity of early admission. This insures that you will have a spot at the school. The amount of people applying to App has grown significantly in the past few years thus the competition to be accepted has also.

    Bang for the buck

Appalachian State offers many opportunities for students, a beautiful campus, free transportation around town, a text book rental system and so much more. The tuition price for a good education and so many benefits is very low. It is an extremely affordable school and it has even been recognized by some published works as so.

    Am enjoying being here

Appalachian State University offers a beautiful campus and a beautiful location. Nestled in the Mountains of North Carolina, it offers a relaxing study environment on top of many outdoor opportunities to partake in during days off. The student body as a collective is one of the nicest and most welcoming groups I have ever encountered and allow everyone to feel welcomed and as if they belong. Campus life offers a surplus of opportunities to see community bands, artists, and many other groups preform in the multiple halls and our local campus night club. School is not often cancelled for snow days due to the excellent care groundskeepers take to protect your health while commuting to classes. Sledding and playing in the snow is still able to be done however, all over campus and even between classes. During the fall, the Blue Ridge parkway is a sight to be seen and conveniently only about fifteen minutes down the road. There is no better place to be attending school during the fall and winter months. The colors of the trees only make the campus and parkway even more breath taking in the fall months. Everyone I talk to on campus loves the scenery, students and overall experience.

    Am learning a lot

The professors at ASU are very helpful and willing to aid any student in assignments. The classroom size is small and most classes offer students a chance to actively participate in discussions and other classroom activities.

I have never felt threatened or unsafe while on the campus of Appalachian. The campus police do a great job at keeping everyone safe and sound.

    Greek Life

There is no sorority housing at ASU, only fraternity's can live in houses off campus. The school has an old hotel in which it has given to the sororities to utilize as housing. There is an old Boone law that prevents more than 5 females to live in the same house if there is no blood relation, so just keep that in mind if you decide to rush.

Great for these types of students

If you enjoy opening your mind to new possibilities and if you can buckle down and be serious in the classroom, then this is the place for you. I also encourage anyone who knows how to have a good time to come on up the mountain to join the Mountaineer family, because there's nothing like celebrating another Mountaineer football victory with fun people!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Although strange, the annual Polar Plunge is a fun event in which students dress up or down and come out to the infamous Duck Pond where they pay to jump in during the middle of winter. All proceeds go to a charity of the event staff's choice! It seems like a lot of fun! Not to mention, all of the food in Boone is DELICIOUS! It is a tradition to go eat at Black Cat after every outdoor adventure. You also must decide whether or not you will be a Los or Dos fan within your first week of attending the university.

    Bang for the buck

Appalachian is rated as one of the best values for an education in all of the nation. I can testify in approval of this ranking because I have received the benefits of this great deal of a university. All of the staff seem truly dedicated to the success of all the students, therefore, in my opinion, this school has more bang for it's buck than any high dollar ivy league school!

    What to do for fun

There are several places to go hiking, waterfall jumping, swimming, rafting, and rock climbing in the mountains. I have always loved being outdoors, so this was a paradise for me! I will say that it really helps to have a car in order to get to all the best places! I even took a trip with the Outdoor Programs through the University and it was so much fun! I got in to rock climbing thanks to some really cool people I met while I was in Boone. The shopping variety isn't all that great, unless you go to the Tanger Outlets in Blowing Rock, but the outdoor adventures are numerous!

    Food and Dining

I can't complain about the food, even though it tasted nothing like the homecooked meals I was accustomed to prior to attending ASU. The meal plans are set up like a debit card so that was really efficient, especially when I didn't feel like eating a whole lot in one day. I got to spend my meal plan at any of the food establishments on campus...kuddos for good planning Appalachian!

    Dorm Life

I had a good experience with living in a dorm, however, I did have a problem with ants in my building and room during the spring semester. (YUCK!) There is a requirement for freshman to live on campus, but there is limited space so every room is full, no matter what time of year it is!

    Academic Rigor

I've only taken General Education courses because I can't decide on a major; however, all of my classes have required my attention in studying outside of the classroom.

    Tips for prospective students

Go ahead and get in the habit of studying outside of class. Once you get in to college life, mom and dad aren't going to be telling you to do your homework everyday when you come home from school, so it is really important to start forming those good study habits ahead of time. Also, you can never have too much black and gold attire!

    In three sentences

The rustic mountains make calling it home easier than I ever thought possible. The friendly atmosphere creates lasting and loving friendships for a lifetime. Lastly, but not least, the innovative thinkers that enter the classrooms each day give a lasting impression of how positive and bright the future can and will be!

Great for these types of students

Appalachian is great for anybody and everybody! It has strong academics, broad course offerings, involved arts program, great athletics, and great student body. ASU is in a great town and you will definitely have a great college experience here!

    Tips for prospective students

Visit the campus: take an official tour or just come on your own; a college may seem great on paper, but you won't know if it's for you until you visit. Unless you are sure that a school is right for you, don't submit a binding application. However, you should apply for the early, non-binding acceptance dates, so you have ample time to decide where you want to spend the next 4 years of your life. Be open to schools that you wouldn't have considered. Take advice from alumni, family, friends, current students, faculty, advisers, guidance counselors, etc. Apply for scholarships even if you don't think you'll get them. Keep on top of your deadlines. Don't slack off during your senior year of high school. If colleges post their application essay topics over the summer, start working on them then because before you know it your application is due and you have writer's block (I know this from experience). Enjoy your college visits and don't mark off a college from your list if it's too expensive; if you're meant to go to a college, you will find a way to make it work. Lastly, check out Appalachian State University because it's a wonderful school! =)

    Bang for the buck

Appalachian offers the small, private college feel and curriculum for the large, public/state school cost. Even for out-of-state students, the price of Appalachian State University compared to the price of some in-state and/or private colleges is extremely reasonable. There are merit and need-based scholarships available through the university and good payment and loan programs in place. There are so many different majors and programs offered here; and if what you're looking for isn't here, you can build your own major. ASU definitely provides a big band for your buck.

    Am enjoying being here

There's something about Appalachian and Boone that makes you feel right at home, no matter where you're from. It is a gorgeous place to go to school; you have great leaves to take pictures of during fall, snow in winter, and moderate/comfortable temperatures from April to September for the most part. Football games are great ways to enjoy being a part of an active student body, for everyone is donned in black and gold, screaming at the top of your lungs for the Mountaineers. There are many clubs and organizations you can be involved with; and if it's not here, you can form a club catering to your interests following the set club-forming guidelines. There's always something to do on campus and most of it's free, which is nice; if you have a big test coming up, there are plenty of peaceful places to study on campus.

    Am learning a lot

There are so many interesting courses offered at Appalachian that it's hard to determine what you want to take for your general education requirements. One of the great things about App is that it offers the internships, research studies, and curriculum variety of a large public university with smaller class sizes, student-professor relationships, scholarships, and strong arts programs typically found at a small, private, liberal arts college. Being a liberal arts university, Appalachian has great classes across the board--from religion and mythology to astronomy and physics. The professors are very knowledgeable and offer office hours if you need to meet with them. Each class varies in difficulty and homework load, but for the most part, the courses are manageable and you can get help with your work through SIs, TAs, your professor, and/or campus tutoring program if you need it.

Great for these types of students

Relaxed, down to earth students. If you enjoy the arts or wilderness...or both! this place is for you. If you want to be small town and enjoy the nature, this school is great for that!

    Tips for prospective students

Go take a tour of the campus, but look at Boone itself too! It's really important to see the whole area of App, not just the campus, because you spend a lot of time taking trips to Walmart, downtown and Blowing Rock!

    Bang for the buck

I'm from in-state, which helps, but all college is getting expensive today. But Appalachian State is worth the tuition! It offers so much more than many other schools can, and if it's the place for you, it's worth every cent.

    Am enjoying being here

Boone is extraordinarily beautiful. It's a small town and it's smack dab in the middle of nature, hiking trails, waterfalls, snow hills and more. But it gets incredibly cold in the winter, so you'd better like snow if you come to App. I love it more than anything, it's the best experience I could have ever asked for!

    Am learning a lot

This school is unlike larger ones, therefore I was pleasantly surprised to find that one of my classes this past semester only had 22 students. There are also lecture halls, and one of my upcoming semester classes has 100 students. Some classes offer both classroom and lecture styled learning, and you get to choose your preference if the classes aren't full! It's a big help. Also, the professors I've encountered so far only want one things from students: for them to succeed!

Great for these types of students

Appalachian is great for students who love a close-knit feeling. The university is truly a family. You'll get close to the people in your dorm, your professors, your RA's, and your classmates. Open-minded students and those with free spirits will love it here. Boone and Appalachian State offer you complete freedom to do what you love and express yourself free of judgment!

    Tips for prospective students

I would advise you to take advantage of everything Appalachian has to offer. If you never venture out of your dorm room, you will not be getting the true college experience. The RA's and professors will help you out if you are respectful of them. I would also encourage you to try new things! Who knows, you could discover a talent or passion that you didn't know you had! The hardest thing, however, is finding a balance between school and fun. It is tempting to slack off, but know that you will be much happier in the long run if you get your work done first and hang out with your friends later. Trust me, there is enough time to do your work and still go to movies, go snowboarding, or even just lounge around in your pajamas doing nothing. Enjoy it – college is liberating!

    Bang for the buck

Appalachian State truly is worth the tuition that you pay. The education, as I said before, is top-notch. In addition, Appalachian State invests in a lot of things that make writing the tuition checks much more bearable. The food is definitely better than most of the other universities I have visited, and they have a wide selection. The events that Appalachian offers for free are spectacular and you can gain a lot without having to pay extra money. There are themed dinners, a chance to have your own street sign made, charity events (you get t-shirts!) and much more. You can borrow cooking utensils and cleaning supplies as opposed to buying them, you get free cable, and many places around Boone offer discounts to Appalachian students. Realistically, you are getting the same education and opportunities that you would at a prestigious university for a much better price.

    Am enjoying being here

Enjoyment is an understatement when it comes to describing Appalachian State and the surrounding area. The university offers endless activities for students from all walks of life. There are concerts which allow you to experience new and different music. There are dances which you can go to if you need a break from studying. The football games are fantastic (much better than high school football games). Each residence hall also hosts events so that you can meet people in your dorm, relax, and maybe even snag some free food and give your meal plan a break. The town of Boone is also incredibly fun. Boone has vintage shops, great restaurants, beautiful scenery, and of course, skiing and snowboarding nearby. The thing I enjoy most is the people. The students at Appalachian State are interesting and friendly and I guarantee that you will make lifelong friends here. There aren't words powerful enough to describe how much I love everything about Appalachian State!

    Am learning a lot

Looking back on my senior year in high school, I am amazed at the way my college career is playing out. I didn't know much about Appalachian State, but I decided to tour the campus anyway. I was awed by the size of it in comparison to my high school. I loved the buildings and the atmosphere. Now that I attend Appalachian, I realize that what goes on inside the buildings is just as impressive. Admittedly, I have taken some classes that I didn't enjoy. Even these classes have broadened my horizons and made me realize the truth behind the saying knowledge is power. The literature I am exposed to and the passionate teachers who are willing to go beyond textbooks have truly inspired me to work hard and retain the things I learn in class. However, learning takes place outside of class as well. Appalachian offers many extracurricular activities that teach you the importance of being involved in your community and give you the chance to express your passions and talents. Appalachian truly offers students a chance to get a well-rounded education, and I recommend that they take advantage of all that the university has to offer.

If you like snow, you are definitely applying to the right place. The town it's located in, Boone, is also not the largest in the world, but rest assured we're not in the middle of nowhere with only a washtub-jugband for entertainment; it does get pretty hectic around here with the influx of college students. But if you like towns that are more on the small, quiet, and cozy side, Boone is one of the best, especially downtown. If you like getting your exercise, the campus is ideal, as just walking casually to a class that's located uphill can leave you a bit breathless. Most students here are very independent, unjudgemental, and laid-back, a nice break from high school.

    Tips for prospective students

Invest in warm clothing; boots, hat, gloves, thick coat, scarf, face mask- the works. The winters here are pretty treacherous-beautiful, but treacherous- and cold, snow, sleet, and ice will be present in about half of your school year. A bike would be a good investment. There's a lot of hills and stairs on campus and off, and even though it might not be practical in the winter, a bicycle would be a good investment once the snow clears. Walking can get pretty tiring. A fan would be good to for the summers as some dorms don't have air conditioning and bring plenty of blankets for the winter. I would recommend living on campus because of the weather and also because it saves a lot of money in the long run. Also bring an umbrella, although if you want the weather to change you simply have to wait five minutes.

    Bang for the buck

I'll be the first to say college is ridiculously expensive, so much so that more than a few of my friends back home are having to attend only one semester and then drop out because they can't afford to go the rest of the year. Others can't afford to go at all and are having to stay at home with their parents to save up enough money. But Appalachain is definitely a worth-while investment. Compared to most other colleges in the state, it has the lowest tuition cost and is still one of the most presitgious schools in the region. What you pay isn't what you get; you get a whole lot more.

    Am enjoying being here

The first few weeks were a bit rough; the homesickness I felt for something familiar and for my friends made me so close to picking up the phone and asking to come back home. But eventually I made a friend, who turned into one of my best friends, and made me get out of my dorm and actually meet people on my floor, which lead to me making more friends. Soon I was having such a good time that eventually I forgot I was ever homesick at all.

    Am learning a lot

The learning experience at Appalachain is so completely and wonderfully different from my past educational experience. The University offers classes that are actually of interest to you; classes you are excited to take and teach things you are excited to learn.

Deadline, deadline, deadline!! Set your own deadline before the actual one so you make sure everything gets done, start with your application all the way to your finial transcript!

Tuition went up but I can't say that I blame them, in order to keep their wonderful teachers, and campus in tip top shape you have to spend some extra money sometimes.

    Will enjoy being here

I already love the outdoors so being in the mountains where there is something new to do everyday is just another plus!!

    Will learn a lot

From my visit I immediately got a feeling that the students there were not just there to party but in the same respect not just there to study. There was a great mix of both and so I think I will learn more about myself the first year but as I settle in will eventually hit the books.

Appalachian is an excellent choice for students with an open mind, a love for nature, and a desire to explore many walks of life and education.

    Tips for prospective students

Appalachian's proximity to some of the most beautiful forests and the Blue Ridge Parkway really amplify the experience. Take some time to go out and drive the Parkway, or go on a few short hikes. You don't need to be a super-mountain-man to enjoy the beauty that Boone has to offer.

    Bang for the buck

Appalachian State is one of the best value colleges in North Carolina. Since I will be going into Education, an economically floundering career, I appreciate the lower tuition costs I will be paying off on a smaller salary.

    Am enjoying being here

I originally applied at a much larger school in a bigger city. I was deadset on attending that University since I was a child, but visiting Boone left a lasting impression that swayed me and brought me here. The people are genuine, caring, liberal, and open. They will accept you for who you are, and treat you like family. It really has the spice of a Southern community.

    Am learning a lot

Appalachian State has a wide variety of concentrations in which to study. From music, to chemistry, to nursing, each program has a strong database of knowledge to help one grow.

Great for these types of students

Appalachian is great for people who love snow and cold weather. Boone gets a lot of snow every winter and being cold becomes the norm. Appalachian is also for people who love the mountains and love football, however if you don't like football, who doesn't like tailgating.

    Tips for prospective students

Go in open minded. Don't start drinking unless you can handle the consequences that come with it. Stay on top of your studies and get involved in class. Get involved in something that is outside of your comfort zone because you become an even more rounded student than you thought you were.

    Bang for the buck

You pay half as much at Appalachian than you do at any other university in the state and you get the exact same quality education with a better view.

    Am enjoying being here

I love Appalachian State. It is in the mountains and no matter what dorm you are in, what apartment complex you are at, there is always a beautiful scene of the mountains. There are so many things to do around campus from getting involved with Greek or going to a football game to joining the amazing Gospel Choir, the experience is life changing and absolutely wonderful. You meet very a variety of people who become like your family.

    Am learning a lot

I love Appalachian and the learning environment that it gives me. While there are some big classes in the general education department, they are still very informative and challenging for me as a person. In my major classes they are smaller but that are also very informative and a great learning experience. For me the learning experience is very open, you can take part in it or opt out. Its not forced but if you take part in it, it will make you stronger as an individual. Outside of class you meet a variety of people that teach you about different lifestyles that are different from yours. The learning environment is all around and it is a great opportunity to be apart of it.

Students who love the outdoors and snow should definitely look into Appalachian. Warning: if you are not a fan of the cold and snow, think twice before going to Appalachian, because there is a lot of it up there.

    Tips for prospective students

GET INVOLVED!! Join clubs, join the band, play a sport, go to football games (FREE for students), make friends with the people on your floor in the dorm, just get involved. When comparing friends who were and were not involved their freshman year of college, there is a BIG difference. My friends who did get involved were beyond happy and my friends who did not get involved were terribly miserable and went home almost every weekend. College is what you make it anywhere you go, so make it GREAT!

    Bang for the buck

I feel like I'm getting a great education for the amount that I am paying in tuition. The text book rental program saves A LOT of money too. A lot of the tools that Appalachian offers to students like the writing center and the library are wonderful and FREE!

    Am enjoying being here

Appalachian State, in my opinion at least, is located in one of the most beautiful spots in North Carolina and in the country. Settled in the mountains of North Carolina, the weather is always perfect and the view is beautiful. It's like living in a little slice of heaven. Everyone in Boone is so nice too, which is always a plus when trying to adjust to college life. No matter who you are and what you enjoy doing you'll find your little spot at Appalachian. King St. has a lot of great shops and places to eat. The things you can do outdoors here are endless: hiking, snowboarding, skiing, going to the waterfalls, etc. are all great ways to get out there and enjoy nature. Howard's Knob is only a few minutes away from campus and you can see ALL of Boone up there, it's truly amazing.

    Am learning a lot

I am definitely learning a lot here at Appalachian State University. I have learned something new and incredible in each and everyone of my classes. The classes are challenging and you actually learn, isn't that what education is all about? Appalachian State has a lot of great classes and professors to offer. All of my professors so far have been very helpful and were always willing to give extra help in and outside of class. There are a lot of interesting classes here that you won't find elsewhere too. You can take a class called What if Harry Potter Was Real? for your freshman seminar class. Where else can you take snowboarding or skiing as your physical education?

Appalachian State University appears that it offers many of the fields that I'm interested in, but not quite sure which one I'll major in. So it's nice to know that all of the programs I'm interested in are in one place.

Great for these types of students

Appalachian is great for a large range of students, but especially those who can appreciate the outdoors and cold weather as we are surrounded by mountains! From arts and humanities to the sciences, Boone offers a lot, though it is better known for it's teaching and business colleges. That doesn't mean Appalachian doesn't provide equally strong and successful majors, because it most certainly does!

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure to ask any and all questions you may have because the more you know the better you'll be. Also it would be wise to learn the food services and bus schedules!

    Bang for the buck

I think the prices for the quality of education you receive is pretty decent. I get the same type of large scale university courses but at a cheaper price and in a much smaller class size and more pleasant environment.

    Am enjoying being here

I LOVE being here! The social atmosphere is very relaxed and open to everybody. People are generally nice and welcoming, creating a positive learning and growing scene. The scenery and weather is beautiful all year round, though it does get a bit chilly and snowy in winter. It's just a great community, in the school and in Boone itself.

    Am learning a lot

The classes here at Appalachian State are engaging, intelligent, and teach you more then just the basic curriculum. The general education system is a bit confusing at first but filled with fun courses instead of blah material that is required. Teachers are all extremely engaging and make sure to include real life examples while helping you grow as a student and individual. Staff in general is very helpful as well, from teachers to advisers and all the wonderful workers who make Appalachian run!

    Campus Safety

Your safety is of top concern. Ride the Appalcart buses anywhere around town free of charge. If a bus is not available, call for a van to pick you up and take you where you need to go, again free of charge. If you are in trouble, use one of the telephones located all around campus. If you have any concerns, please feel free to call or drop by the campus police building and have all your questions answered.

Great for these types of students

Any type of student can find themselves at home here at Appalachian. We love everyone!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Appalachian State University is just 5 minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway and only a few miles from the town of Blowing Rock, where you can experience a legend for yourself. Maybe you are more into the social scene. Check out our version of Woodstock (without the craziness that is) which we call Music On The Mountaintop!

    Bang for the buck

We all have heard the expression You get what you pay for, but at Appalachian you get WAY MORE than what you paid for. It is almost as good as Buy One Get One Free ice cream!

    What to do for fun

There are so many fun activities at Appalachian State University! Catch a concert at Broyhill Music Center or tear up the dance floor at the on campus club Legends. Play with a puppy from the local animal shelter or go for a hike along the trails around campus. Maybe take that special someone on a picnic at the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway or go shopping at the local shops only a stone throw from campus.

    Food and Dining

At ASU, there are several fantastic dining facilities and the dining halls are spacious enough that you never bump elbows with anyone else.

    Dorm Life

Sometimes living with a roommate can be a pain, but at ASU there is a wide variety of people to meet and someone will surely become your newest best friend! The dorms are kept clean and safety measures are taken to keep you safe.

    Tips for prospective students

Take part in campus activities and meet new people. Be friendly and polite to everyone, because they will be friendly and polite to you in return! Manage your money (particularly your meal plan) wisely. Be yourself, or what we like to say at ASU Be yosef!

Appalachian State University provides a wide range of academic and extracurricular interests for all of its students and surely has the right activities for you! Campus Safety

There are many procedures in place to keep the campus safe, as well as programs organized to inform the campus of changes in policy or procedure. For instance, the App Alert system will call, text, or email students in the case of an emergency or crime occurring on the campus. Also, App's Safe Ride service provides transportation for students to and from any location on campus, which allows students to move safely across campus without fear of being hindered, especially during late nights.

    Greek Life

Greek life on campus is very active, and as an African-American student, I am happy that there are options from NPHC for fraternities and sororities. Overall, it is almost impossible to neglect the involvement of these organizations on our campus.

    Clubs and Activities

Appalachian provides an unimaginable number and variety of organizations for students to become involved including choir, service organizations, minority organizations, intramural sports, fraternities/sororities, and even a Quidditch team.

Great for these types of students

App is great for any students that enjoy being outside especially, there are many options for students to get involved in the community as well.

    Bang for the buck

Appalachian is a relatively cheap school, but it is a nice size and provides a good education. Furthermore, with the option of book rental and the on-campus financial assistance, App is reasonably priced.

    What to do for fun

For fun, I enjoy community service work, but more than anything dancing! I am a member of The Order of Black and Gold, as service organization on campus that provides service to the immediate campus community as well as the surrounding community. I also am the founder and President of Entropy Dance Crew, which is a hip-hop dance organization on campus as well as a service organization that serves the surrounding community. We also perform in campus events, teach dance workshops, and compete in competitions around North Carolina. Dance is my passion and my reason for living.

    Food and Dining

The food and dining on campus is above adequate. Substantial amounts of options are provided on campus; however, after some time any student would get bored with on campus dining. There are many options around Boone in walking distance, but there is a lack of vegetarian and non-meat options on campus.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life varies depending on which dorm a student lives in; however, the Resident Housing Association (RHA) is diligent when it comes the on-campus life for students. The dorms are intimate and the Resident Assistants (RAs) are constantly creating a safe and inviting environment for the rest of the students. I would prefer to live off-campus because I would like to have my own room and more space, but I enjoy living on campus nonetheless.

    Academic Rigor

Classes at Appalachian State University provides a course load that is appropriate and paired with professors that are genuinely invested in a student's education, a student can't go wrong. As a student of the University and Psychology Honor's Colleges, the opportunity to dive into the topics that I am interested in with professors that are just as interested makes my college experience worthwhile. I have not expeirenced a couse that I could not handle, and with the many university resources that are available for academic help, I don't imagine that I will.

    Tips for prospective students

    1) Always carry an umbrella and/or raincoat because the weather is temperamental. 2) Be ready to walk a lot- in the mountains everything is uphill 3) Take advantage of all of the outdoor activities and the many organizations that are on campus 4) Don't work TOO hard, make sure you enjoy yourself! 5) If there isn't something there for you, find people who share your interest and create it!

    In three sentences

App is a school that is reasonably sized with a staff that really cares about making a student's education a priority. Although App is a bit cold in the winters, it is well worth attending a school with so many great things to do. Appalachian State University is THE school to be at!

    What to do for fun

Go hiking. Go Biking. Go Swimming when its warm. Buy a hammock, I promise you will need it, everyone hammocks. Get snow boots. Go sledding, skiing, and snowboarding. Even go tubing!

    Food and Dining

Food is expensive. You will run out of money on your food plan if you don't be careful.

    Dorm Life

Stay in a dorm at least your first year in college. It is something I think everyone should experience at least once.

    Academic Rigor

Appalachian is very challenging and they expect you to learn as much as you can before you use the things you've learned in your professional career.

    Tips for prospective students

Start walking over the summer because the campus is not flat. They say you gain a freshman 15 but I lost a freshman 15. Read your textbooks regardless if your professor tells you to or not. Stay ahead of the game and use a planner. DO EVERYTHING! Join clubs, make friends, stay out of your dorm.

    In three sentences

Appalachian State University's campus and location is welcoming and like no other. The people are way different than your usual college campus but you feel at home at Appalachian. The professors are amazing and want to help you and spend extra time outside of the classroom to help you understand the material at hand.

    What to do for fun

What don't we do for fun. There is always something going on. There are concerts, hypnotists, over 300 clubs, and you can always find an Ultimate Frisbee Game going on. When I first went to Appalachian I was told that if you couldn't find something to do at App, then you weren't even trying, and I have found that to be very true.

    Food and Dining

The food on campus is outstanding. There are so many options to choose from that it almost impossible to try them all in one year. Whether it is a chicken sandwich from Chick Fil A, fresh sushi, or something from McAlister's Deli, there is something for everyone.

    Dorm Life

I absolutely love the dorm life at Appalachian. There is always something going on. Whether it was game night, movie night, or just hanging about in the dorm. There is never a dull moment. Living on campus is an amazing experience.

    Academic Rigor

The professors on campus really know their stuff. They are dedicated to not only teaching the core curriculum, but also much more. They also care a lot about the students they teach. You develop long-lasting relationships with the professors that extend all the way through college and beyond. Overall, I don't think that there is a better school when it comes to the amazing professors at Appalachian.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are thinking about becoming a student at ASU I would suggest three things before you arrive in Boone: 1) Come with an open mind. ASU prides itself on diversity. 2) Get a good pair of shoes, and a really good Winter coat. 3) Get yourself a copy of the Appalcart bus routes. It will most definitely come in handy as the Appalcart system can take you almost anywhere you need or want to go.

    In three sentences

Appalachian State University is a laid back, fun, and down-to-earth college. There is something for everyone. If you want a place where learning happens just as much outside of the class, as it does within; This is the place for you.

Hula Hooping. $1 films on campus. Craft fairs. Jamming with your musical instrument on any street corner, and getting tips for it. Polar plunge. ect. ect. ect.

    Food and Dining

Boone's completely crazy for local, organic and vegitarian, making all of their dining selections pretty tasty. The only major chain that exists in the cafeteria is Chick FIL A, and that may be removed soon. Meal plans are by cash value not meals offered per a week, so you've got to keep track of spending so you're not emergency calling your parents for cash. Food selections are: wraps, burritos, grilled sandwich things, salad bars, ice cream machines, frozen yogurt, subs, make your own noodle dish, sushi, pizza, home style things, and of course, Chick Fil A. The are also two coffee houses on campus, my favorite.

    Dorm Life

I liked the dorms, their only problem being that after freshmen year, they're not guaranteed. West side is older and smaller, close to the football stadium and the art building though, so that's a plus if you're into that. East side is newer and closer to the main part of campus/ shopping. Over all, they're clean and a good bases for forming friendships as a freshman, where you can walk to where ever everyone else lives on campus.

    Academic Rigor

I'm not sure if I'm being asked on whether the teaching is thorough or the teaching is hard. If we're talking difficulty: I've been at 16+ hours a semester with an 8 hour a week job and still have time to go on climbing adventures/ free campus events and am still in good academic standing. The classes here are sometimes very fast paced but mostly they're simple and very thorough about trying to get their students to succeed.

    Tips for prospective students

Know this: it rains in fall and it rains in spring, if the weather says it's going to rain, it means it'll rain in three days. The weather is a lie but mostly the area is beautiful. Another thing: buy a hamock and learn to slack line.

    In three sentences

App state is a 17000 person college that feels like it only houses 5000. Everyone is friendly, adventurous and in some way, an artist. This is a school where nobody feels judged and everyone is welcome.

    Dorm Life

There are some amazing dorms at Appalachian State, while there are some not so great ones too. The dorms have great social gatherings.

Great for these types of students

    outdoorsy, educated, generally awesome

    Bang for the buck

Textbook rental program is excellent. You probably won't be able to rent all your books, but even renting one is an excellent deal!

    What to do for fun

Keep your door open and go to the common area on the floor of your dorm. There will always be people out there wanting something to do. If you don't wanna stay on campus, King Street is a busy place full of little shops and cafes. There are so many places to hike, swim, and bike -- really, anything outdoors you want to do, App State has it.

    Food and Dining

Food is really cheap here, and it's surprisingly good! I recommend the McAlister's at the Student Union. (Yes, it takes your meal plan, too!)

    Dorm Life

    Dorm life is simply awesome.

    Academic Rigor

It really depends on the type of classes you're taking. I'm taking 16 hours this semester, so I'm a little stressed out with my workload, but I have friends who are taking 12 hours and they seem to never have homework to do.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply early -- that's true of any college you go to. You're much more likely to get in if you apply early! Similarly, do your housing application early. I ended up not being in the crappy dorms because I did mine the day it came out. Be ready to walk . . . a LOT . . . up hills. In the cold.

    In three sentences

App State is a truly amazing school. Wonderful environment, amazing teachers, delicious food, countless opportunities, nice (ish) dorms, reasonable prices, and a textbook rental program that saves you tons of money. You'd be crazy to NOT go here!

Up here in Boone, the crime rate is very low. Also there are at least 30 different emergency stops so if you're in trouble and need help, you simply press the blue button on the emergency poles and the police will track where you are and be there ASAP

    Clubs and Activities

There is a club for EVERYTHING here! Literally everything! You will no doubt find a club or organization that fits you. Just get out of the dorm and get involved. You'll meet tons of new, friendly people.

Up here, tons of people hang out on Sanford Mall which is a large strip of beautiful land surrounded by trees on the middle of campus. We lay in hammocks, tight rope walk, play soccer, football, frisbee or softball or simply study and pass time with friends. It's tons of fun!

    Bang for the buck

App State's tuition is your average tuition costs. But it's so worth it and the experience you will have while up here is amazing. No matter what color you are or what ethnicity you are, you will always be a part of the Appalachian family.

    What to do for fun

I play on the club soccer team and hang out with people from class to make new friends. It's really easy to meet people here and fit right on in.

    Food and Dining

We have a large selection of foods from pizza to subs to Chik fil A to noodles and just about anything else. The food is so good!

    Dorm Life

As long as you bring the necessities you need to live for the next year or two, you are sure to enjoy it here. The dorms are spacious and provide a safe, comfortable living space.

    Academic Rigor

All of the teachers here will do anything it takes to help you pass. The professors are very approachable and helpful.

    Tips for prospective students

I knew when I stepped foot on Appalachian State's campus, that it was the one for me. So make sure, when choosing schools, that you like the surrounding areas and feel safe. Don't worry about where your friends or boyfriend/girlfriend is going. Do what's best for you.

    Campus Safety

Although there are crime alerts occasionally, App state is one of the safest campuses I've ever heard about. I honestly feel comfortable walking the ten minutes from my workshop to my dorm past 10pm on most nights.

    Clubs and Activities

There is not a single interest group or club that I can think of that hasn't been created or thought about. It's reasonably simple to create them, if there are enough interested members. There are constantly free events held on campus, and plenty of things to be involved with.

Great for these types of students

If you consider yourself artistic, abnormal, eccentric, down-to-earth, kind, easy-going, close to nature, and you like cold weather, this is the place for you. It's fairly easy to make friends, especially as a freshman.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Plemmons Student Union has an incredibly beautiful, tropical solarium, equipped with waterfalls, armchairs and tables to study at. It's a very peaceful, stress relieving environment to study or read a book. Duck pond and Duck pond field on west campus holds plenty of the events and usually a late-night ultimate frisbee marathon that lasts until 12am on weekends.

    What to do for fun

There is an endless list of fun things to do here. You can read in the cafe in the Student Union, walk downtown through the art shops, go hiking in the many incredibly beautiful parks along the parkway, go clubbing (if you're into that stuff), napping in a hammock anywhere on campus, hang out with friends, go to the movie theater or bowling-- and tons more. My personal favorite is in October: Haunted Tweetsie. Tweetsie is an innocent cowboys and indians theme park for small children during the day, and a fun-packed haunted thriller by night.

    Food and Dining

All I can say is that Trivette Hall is amazing in terms of food. The only problem is that they have really wonky hours. Central Dining Hall is open at all hours of the day until 10pm, and has pretty good options-- and it even has a Chick-fil-a!

    Dorm Life

At this college, there are many RLC's (Residential Learning Communities) that befit many different people's interests. From an artist's community to a black and gold sports fan's community, there are a wide range of RLC's. And even if you don't choose one of those, App chooses the best resident assistants to help guide you through freshman year and beyond. I live in one of the halls close to the center of campus with an incredible RA that plans really neat hall events. It's worth living in a dorm here.

    Academic Rigor

I don't know about the other majors-- but in the Technology department, we are all competitive and incredibly zealous about our studies and projects. The professors accept nothing less than perfection, and it shows in student progression. It's not a surprise that Appalachian Design Students are highly appraised and have a very high employment rate after graduation.

    Tips for prospective students

The first step for success is to GO TO CLASS! Some professors don't have attendance policies, and some do. Even if they don't, your grade WILL plummet if you don't... trust me. Also, weirdness is widely accepted in Boone. Things other people would consider strange- piercings, different clothes, going barefoot, and pitching a hammock wherever you please- are all normal over here at App. And another thing-- the best dining hall on campus is Trivette hall. It's all really good cooking.

    In three sentences

The absolute best match for me, in terms of overall student attitude, my interests, and my intended major. The professors are all intelligent and very informative, helpful, and educated. The campus is also incredibly beautiful, especially during the autumn months, and close to the downtown area.

Football Saturday's are big here at ASU. We love our college football here at The Rock.

    Bang for the buck

It is a great bang for your buck. ASU is truly a family and the support system from alumni is first rate.

    What to do for fun

ASU is built for the outdoors. Hiking, biking and skiing abound here, but there are also plenty of places for quiet time.

    Food and Dining

There's something for everyone here. Vegans can find what they want, as much as meat eaters can.

    Dorm Life

This is the first time I have spent considerable time away from home and have had a good adjustment. Everyone is very helpful and there's plenty to do here in the Honors Dorm.

    Academic Rigor

At least on my academic track in ASU's Honors College, it is difficult. However, the professors spend time working with you if you need help. They mean it when they say they are a family here at ASU.

    Tips for prospective students

Visit the campus. The mountains of North Carolina are beautiful, but it's not for everyone. The weather changes constantly here, which makes it interesting to attend ASU. However, the academic support system here outweighs any climatic difficulties you may encounter.

    In three sentences

Appalachian State University is everything I thought it would be, and more. ASU has an atmosphere that promotes learning in a low-key environment. You can focus on your academics while exploring your outside interests.

    Campus Safety

I've never felt unsafe on campus. Crime in Boone is pretty low, Watauga County is ranked the 3rd safest county in NC. Check the crime log at police.appstate.edu, for yourself. Most of what you'll find is things like marijuana use or drinking, no violent crimes. There are emergency blue light telephones scattered around campus that can be used to call the police. At night, there is a system called SafeRide that will take you from any on-campus location to another for free.

    Greek Life

I don't know too much about this. I know that they make up about 10% of the campus, there aren't a whole lot of hazing stories that I've heard, and most of the sororities are housed together in a renovated hotel off campus called Appalachian Panhellenic Hall. They do have parties, but the social life at App isn't dominated by the Greek scene, which was a plus for me.

    Clubs and Activities

This is absolutely one of the best things about Appalachian. There are a LOT of club and intramural sports teams. Trails and ski lodges are minutes away from campus. On campus, there are music groups, cultural clubs, political organizations, theatre groups, and dance troupes. There are clubs for those who are interested in different careers, a debate team, a student newspaper and (MTV Woodie Award winning) student radio station. Pretty much any club you may be interested in. There is a $1 movie theater on campus that shows pretty new movies (The Campaign played last week). There are always concerts, lectures, plays, or dances happening.

Great for these types of students

If you enjoy snow and cool mountain weather, this is your place. It's great if you love football. If you like outdoor activities (skiing/snowboarding, hiking, climbing) you won't find a better school, it's right off the Blue Ridge Parkway and close to a lot of trails and ski mountains. If you like to meet different kinds of people, have classes and professors that take you out of your comfort zone, you'll find that here. There's not really a type of student that comes to Appalachian, you'll pretty much find it all.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There are lots of traditions on campus, such as the Polar Plunge (jumping into the Duck Pond for charity) and rubbing the Founder's Bell before exams. As for unusual locations, I think Legends, the on-campus club, is pretty cool.

    Bang for the buck

Appalachian has low in-state tuition, and one of the lowest out-of-state tuitions in the state. Financial aid is a hassle, but the award covered everything I needed. I wouldn't trade the educational and life experiences I've had at App for anything in the world.

    What to do for fun

There is always a lot happening in Boone. If you're into partying, that happens almost exclusively off-campus. Boone is more of a bar scene than a club scene, but they're great. APPS (Appalachian Popular Programming Society) brings a lot of different bands/performers to Legends, which is an on-campus venue. There is a great music school. I also think the theatre program is awesome, but I'm biased. There are hundreds of clubs for pretty much any interest.

    Food and Dining

It depends on where you go. I visited a lot of colleges, and Central Dining Hall has some of the best food of any school I visited. Conversely, Trivette, a smaller dining hall, has some of the worst. There is an awesome full-service McAlister's in the student union. There are healthy, vegetarian, and vegan options at every location.

    Dorm Life

Many of the residence halls, especially those for freshmen, are very old, and rooms are small even for college dorms. Also, housing for upperclassmen is limited. That being said, there are always activities happening around the dorms, and each dorm has kitchens and places to study. They are also fairly safe. Most RAs aren't all that strict.

    Academic Rigor

I have enjoyed all of my classes. I am part of the honors college. None of my classes have been larger than 30 students and I've been able to get to know all of my professors. Professors are very qualified, 99% have doctorates. There are a lot of resources to help students succeed.

    Tips for prospective students

Do the essays, even if they are not required. They'll make your application look better and qualify you for scholarships. Schedule a visit! You'll learn a lot more if you go at a time other than an Open House.

    In three sentences

Appalachian State is a friendly, beautiful campus in the mountains of Western NC. There are clubs and activities for any interest, as well as incredible athletic programs that foster school spirit. Boone is an excellent college town that supports the school.

Appalachian's University Police Department is responsible for protecting life and property on campus 24 hours a day / 7 day a week. Officers patrol by car, by foot, and by bike and have complete authority to apprehend and arrest anyone who violates North Carolina State Law on campus. This makes me feel safe no matter where I am on campus.

    Greek Life

At Appalachian State University students are welcome to Fraternity and Sorority Life. There are over 1400 members of the 26 Fraternities and Sororities present on campus. Not only do they serve as a resource for the current Fraternity and Sorority community, but offers a clearinghouse of information for perspective students, parents and alumni.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many clubs and activities that I could never list them all. All that needs to be said is that no matter what race, religion or social origins you relate to there is definitely something you will find to do or a club that will interest you at Appalachian State University.

Great for these types of students

Vintage films are shown each Wednesday and Friday in the 74-seat Greenbriar Theater located in the Plemmons Student Union. The theater features high-back leather with dual arm rests and dual cupholders. Some of last year's features included Dead Poet's Society, Singin' in the Rain, Grease, and Breakfast at Tiffany's. You get this all at the low price of $1.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There are many clubs and organizations on campus that students can join. There are Greek life, multi-cultural interests, student government and so much more. You will definitely not be bored if you live on campus at Appalachian State University.

    Bang for the buck

I enjoy hanging out at the Sanford Mall, which is centrally located on campus. There is always something fun going on there, whether it be playing frisbee, laying in a hammick, studying in a relaxed atomsphere, walking a tight rope or just chilling with my friends.

    What to do for fun

I am a very sports minded person so I love to attend as many college sporting events as possible. Why wouldn't you when you get free admission to all sporting events. I also love to attend the college movies on campus that are very reasonably priced. You can have fun doing so many things on campus without having to spend much money, and my parents love that!

    Food and Dining

Oh my gosh, the food is great. There are so many different things to choose from no matter how picky a eater you may be. I have definitely broadened my horizons with trying things I would have never eaten if I were still living at home

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is a wonderful experience everyone should try. You get to meet so many different people from other states and countries. Making new friends is a great experience because that is what you will be doing when you start working in your designated field of interest.

    Academic Rigor

Absolutely, it is academically rigorous but that is what college is all about. It is supposed to be challenging yet interesting or you are not getting out of college what you are paying for. Remember this is the training you are getting to get that perfect job after graduation that is going to support you and your finances for the rest of your life.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure to take college campus tours when looking for the college you want to attend. It is the best way to know if Appalachian State University is the right fit for you. On your tour ask lots of questions, this is the only way you are going to know what the campus is really like. Ask a student on campus what they think of the college to get a student's perspective.

    In three sentences

Appalachian State University is an awesome college. I am a college transfer student majoring in History/Education and have fit in very well. I know that just spending my first semester here, that this is where I will continue my education and proudly graduate from.

    Campus Safety

App State is known for having out own campus police and the Boone police. Therefore, we have twice the protection. Also, there are several blue light boxes around campus that you can push for an emergency 24/7. The campus is definitely safe.

    Greek Life

There are several Fraternities and Sororities on campus that all have similar and different ideals. If you're interested, I'd recommend that you check them out.

    Clubs and Activities

With over 300 clubs and organizations, there is a club for everyone. I'd recommend that a student should join at least one.

Great for these types of students

This school is perfect for students who love the outdoors and mountains. It is also perfect for students who want a good academic challenge while not having to pay a lot of money for a great education.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is a founder's bell on campus that a lot of students believe that rubbing the bell will bring them good luck on examinations. I'll be honest...I've rubbed the bell before.

    Bang for the buck

The football games. EVERYONE loves the football games, even those afraid to admit it. These are so much fun.

    What to do for fun

Well seeing as how we are surrounded by mountains in every direction the easiest activity for fun would be hiking. There are several areas all around Boones to hike at. Another activity would be to ski in the winter. You can also join several clubs that do a lot of activities around campus and town for fun. However, the main attraction may be the sporting events. Everyone loves sports and sports are on of App State's biggest activities.

    Food and Dining

The food here is amazing! It's not your mom's cooking but it is definitely close! There are so many options to choose from it can be overwhelming at times. The only problem is that you may run out of money before the semester is over so try to have a strategy!

    Dorm Life

Dorm life at ASU is awesome! You will probably meet some of the best people in your dorm. Instant friendships will be formed. At times, dorm life may seem frustrating from having to be quiet or respecting others. In the end, though, dorm life is one of the best aspects of any college. It is where a lot of adventures can begin and end.

    Academic Rigor

Appalachian State University offers some of the best classes while offering small class sizes at the same time. The work can be difficult at times but this is college. Overall, if your dedicated to do your best, you will be fine.

    Tips for prospective students

Talk to everyone! Do not stay held up in your room the first week of school and miss out on building your foundation of friends. Your social life is highly important in college. Also, get out and about. Go on a walk and see the campus. Become involved! Lastly, study. Do not try to cram the last minute for a test. This isn't high school anymore!

    In three sentences

Appalachian State University is simply one of the best places I have ever been on this planet, Earth. From the genuine people to breathtaking scenery, Appalachian State University is by far one of the best colleges to attend. There are endless activities to do at ASU from hiking to clubs to simply walking around campus and therefore, I highly recommend it.

    Greek Life

They have Greek life, but I'm not involved with that.

    Clubs and Activities

There is a club for pretty much everything. I have even heard that the Quidditch team is pretty popular...

Great for these types of students

Students who love nature, are outdoorsy, outgoing, social, and love diversity will thrive here.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Sanford Mall is a great place to hang out in the fall and sled down in the winter. The student union is a great resource, and Belk Library is really nice. Make sure you are ready for ASU football!

    Bang for the buck

I love this school, and it is pretty affordable. About half of my tuition was paid by the Pell Grant and university financial aid.

    What to do for fun

There is a nightclub on campus that holds concerts and such. There are tons of clubs and organizations to join, as well as club/intramural sports. Being in the mountains, you have a lot of opportunities to go hiking, rafting, climbing, skiing, snowboarding, and sledding. You can even take snowboarding as a PE credit! Also, make sure you bring a hammock- hammocking is something students do on campus all the time.

    Food and Dining

There are so many options to choose from when eating! On campus there are two main dining halls and a bunch of small dining spots. The campus is vegetarian/vegan friendly (I am a vegetarian myself and love the options). On campus there is even a McAlister's and Chik-fil-a. Oh, and I've heard the sushi options are really great!

    Dorm Life

The dorms are the smallest I have ever stayed in (I have done multiple summer camps and residency camps on college campuses in different states). However, there is so much to do on and off campus that you shouldn't spend a lot of time in your dorm room.

    Academic Rigor

From what I have heard, classes are challenging but good. Some professors make class really enjoyable.

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared for all four seasons in a week. Always carry an umbrella with you. Stock up on snow gear. (That last point makes the most impact on me, as I am from the coast and did not realize snow was so wet.)

    In three sentences

    Campus Safety

Overall, I felt very safe about App after listening to students and faculty explain safety measures. I was told about the Appal Cart, which can pick up students from anywhere on campus at night if they feel unsafe walking by themselves.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is very low compared to other schools, both in state and out of state. There's so much to do there.

    What to do for fun

Soooo many clubs and outdoor experiences. Many students hike or hang out at waterfalls for fun. There are also a plethora of excursion opportunities (kayaking, rock climbing, rafting, etc.) available. The Student Recreation Center is very nice, including a large pool, two gyms, a track, a workout room, and a very tall rock wall. The Boone Mini Mall, just off campus, is also a cool little collection of stores.

    Food and Dining

Lots and lots of dining options in the dining hall!

    Dorm Life

Overall, dorms seem pretty nice. However, the freshman honors dorms were very small, even for dorms.

    Academic Rigor

App's academics seem challenging, but not overly hard. I feel secure about there still being time to have fun and do well there academically.

    Tips for prospective students

If you can get into the Honors College, it's a great opportunity. According to one of the faculty members, the Honors College has had 100% acceptance of students who applied to a medical school in the past two years, which is very high. Also, apply for scholarships. I was awarded a full ride, and it's a great school. Don't overlook this school because of things you've heard about it. I definitely thought I wouldn't go there until my first visit, which was about a month ago when I interviewed for my scholarship. Then I fell in love. And this is coming from someone who is well-into the top 10% of their class at a well-known public school.

    In three sentences

App is a very welcoming community with a plethora of opportunities, even for underclassmen. The campus feels very laid back and encourages outdoor activities and active student life. The Honors College also seems to give lots of personal attention to its students.

    Food and Dining

If you don't like the cafeteria food, there are an ABUNDANCE of wonderful choices outside the campus. Nothing beats home cooking, but the local restaurants are pretty tasty and definitely within the freshmen college budget.

    Dorm Life

Co-ed is nice, and the dorms leave a ton of room for bonding. Very quaint but a little small, the recreation centers make up for the space provided in the living quarters.

    Academic Rigor

Not too bad, I cleared many AP courses in my junior and senior year, and they were actually a lot harder than classes at ASU.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't worry too much about getting accepted, you just need that one sport/ leadership activity to tip the scale in your favor. Also, try your best to meet the scholarship deadline. App itself is a very affordable school and offers a very sound education for the tuition cost, but it won't hurt to get that extra discount.

At night, we have a service called Safe Ride which allows you to get from where you are at to anywhere on campus you want to go safely. They also have over 70 blue emergency phones located all over campus and if you press the button, a police officer or officers will be there in less than a minute.

    Greek Life

Some Greek life associations are based around academics and you are only offered to be in the Greek organization if you make good grades and are involved. Others are not based on that and require hard work and much of the student's time and this makes them more dedicated and willing to be a part of it.

    Clubs and Activities

There is so much to do here at Appalachian! There are things to do in the residence halls you are living in and there is clubs/activities outside of where you life. There are intramural teams that allow students to play and have fun, but not have to be playing on a school based team. You can make you own clubs here and it allows students to express their interests, for example, we have a Quiddich team. We also have clubs that tailor to different majors that are offered on campus.

Great for these types of students

ENO Hammocks and straps, hiking/snow boots, variety of clothing, outdoor supplies(baseball glove, frisbee, etc.)

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The gazebo by the pond by a dining hall on the west side of campus is great for laying in a hammock or hanging out with friends. Students body paint at games in November. Tailgating is a big thing that happens before home football games. Homecoming events-Lip Sync(dancing and lip syncing to songs), Float Building party and parade, Kazoo band, banner contest, and blood drive.

    Bang for the buck

You are never bored here. Since Appalachian State is near the Blue Ridge Parkway and Blowing Rock, there are always many places to hike, shop and hang out with friends. There is a street right next to the campus called King Street and this street has many different shops that give students a chance to buy Appalachian wear, antiques, etc. Students are really nice and are really helpful, as well as the professors. At one of the academic buildings, a recently released movie is played twice every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night for only $1. This provides students with an activity they can do without having to leave campus and without getting into bad situations.

    What to do for fun

Sporting events, playing out on Duck Pond field and Sanford Mall, being involved in teams and clubs, shopping at stores in Blowing Rock and on King Street, activities put on by clubs that are held on campus(ex. Build a Pet-an event that is like the process you would have at build a bear, except you stuff the animal yourself).

    Food and Dining

There are 2 main dining halls. There is also a few other places in the Student Union that allows people to go for coffee, smoothies, etc. There are also 2 markets on campus and at these markets, you can buy many different things that you would like to make on your own. The market is sometimes overly priced, but I have been able to save hundreds of dollars by eating at the dining halls.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life varies from building to building. The residents in my building have formed very close knit relationships with each other because we all have found things we have in common. Many people are always out on the floor, talking and hanging out with each other. The communities that are formed make everyone truly want to help others to succeed as much as the others want to succeed.

    Academic Rigor

The professors here are awesome! They are truly here to help you succeed in your classes. The work my professors have given me has truly helped me to learn what I want to do and has given me the chance to meet others who enjoy the same classes I do.

    Campus Safety

The campus is well-lit at night. There are Blue Light alert stations located all around campus. I have never felt unsafe while on campus, although common sense is vital on any college campus, no matter how safe it is.

    Greek Life

I don't know much about the Greek Life at App, but I do know that a lot of people participate and enjoy it. I know that App has an extremely strict no hazing policy as well.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many clubs and activities on campus it would be impossible to name them all. There is truly something for everyone.

Great for these types of students

I think that App is especially great for Education and Sustainable Development majors. It is also good for really outdoorsy people and snowboarders and skiers.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The only thing that I can think of is this large brass bell that hangs in front of Ann Belk Hall, which is the building housing the History department. Supposedly this bell serves as a good luck charm for students. If they rub the bell, it will bring them good luck on their exams!

    Bang for the buck

I consider App to be a great school for value. I do not pay for my schooling but I know a lot of students who do. I believe that App may be the least expensive university in the UNC system.

    What to do for fun

There are hundreds of organizations at App to get involved in. From sports (varsity, inter mural, and club) to social, political, academic, religious, and community service clubs and MORE, it would be difficult for a student to feel like he or she can't find people with similar interests. There are always free meals, parties, movies, socials, and other events on campus. There are three recreation centers/gyms that are, of course, free for students. There are also lots of fun places around Boone, including shopping and dining on King Street and gorgeous scenery and hiking.

    Food and Dining

I feel that our dining facilities are very neat, clean, and run by friendly faculty. There are a lot of food and drink options all over campus. I can only think of a few items I have purchased here and really disliked. The food is good and pretty reasonable priced but sometimes I wish there were more options.

    Dorm Life

I have really enjoyed living in the dorms this year. My building is conveniently located, nice and spacious, and safe. I plan to live in the dorms next year as well because I see no reason to go apartment hunting until I have to.

    Academic Rigor

The courses are challenging and demanding, but not outrageously so. I feel that a good general rating for academic rigor is 4/5 stars, but it can really vary according to the class, professor, and student.

    Tips for prospective students

Take lots of notes, even when no one else in class is taking them. Ask questions and pay attention to the answers you receive. Don't be intimidated by upperclassmen. Stay healthy. Take vitamins and get your flu shot. Stay in touch with your family and friends back home. Treat school like a job...put in your hours every day and do your best.

    In three sentences

Appalachian State University's campus is beautiful and spacious, set against the backdrop of the Appalachian Mountains. The faculty is helpful and informative. There are hundreds of clubs, teams, and groups available for students to get involved in.

    Clubs and Activities

Something for everyone at App State. I was involved in several clubs. The Rec center is awesome and offers a wide variety of classes for all interests. I loved the Abs class.

    Bang for the buck

As an out of state student I feel the tuition is reasonable. Most books included in the tuition is a great money saver. Room and board is also VERY reasonable compared to most colleges.

    What to do for fun

Football games, hang with friends, hike with friends. Compression falls is a blast.

    Food and Dining

Loved McAllisters Deli. Did not eat in dining hall for every meal, I am a picky eater and often purchased food in market and eat in my room.

    Campus Safety

The campus is very safe. It is well-lit and there are people everywhere pretty much all the time. There is a shuttle service that can transport you and a friend around campus during evening hours called Safe Ride. There are also campus police who patrol the campus.

    Greek Life

There are fraternities and sororities like most other colleges. I do not know anything about them, though.

    Clubs and Activities

We have religious clubs, residence hall clubs, music clubs. Clubs for theater, honors students, fine and applied arts, academic, business, sports...just about every club you could think of, we have. Everyone can find their niche and is sure to be welcomed anywhere. We even have a '90s Culture club!

Great for these types of students

Appalachian is great for most students. There are many stairs around and you can experience all four seasons in one day. During football season, there are large crowds and during the summer, there are many tourists.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Polar Plunge is held toward the end of January every year, people jump into Duck Pond with costumes on. Every summer, The Appalachian Summer Festival is held. This year, Bill Cosby is going to be here!

    Bang for the buck

I believe Appalachian State has the best bang for the buck in North Carolina. I am a Music Major and money could not buy more dedicated and caring faculty members.

    What to do for fun

Personally, I like going to the Student Recreation Center to swim and rock climb. Other things near campus that I like doing are hiking on the Blue Ridge Parkway, kayaking in Todd, and walking around King Street to see the live music and interesting shops.

    Food and Dining

We have a nice main dining hall in the center of campus. It is clean and anyone can find something they like. The workers are also really nice and joke with you.

    Dorm Life

Just like any communal living space, there will be noisy people and messy people. I had so much fun living in a dormitory. The RAs (Resident Assistants) really want to get to know you and they want to help in any way they can.

    Academic Rigor

It does not really matter what your major is when it comes to academics. Be prepared to really earn your degree. Whether it is a general education class or one of your core major classes, the professors really want to help you and are willing, but they will not ask you if you need help. It is not their job. Self-motivation and time management are key to success!

    Tips for prospective students

If you plan on attending college here, be prepared to walk uphill both ways. I am not kidding. And ladies, steer clear of high heels unless you are sure you can handle it.

    In three sentences

Appalachian is a very cultured school. We have many international students who bring their traditions and melt them together with our traditions and, as a result, new traditions are formed that make this a very unique place to learn and live. I did not apply anywhere else and I still know that was the right decision.

    What to do for fun

There is always something fun going on at Appalachian; whether you are playing Frisbee on Sanford Mall or Duck pond, slack lining, laying out in hammocks reading, going to the bars, or playing Quidditch there is always something to do.

    Food and Dining

You can find something you like, just not everything is fantastic.

    Dorm Life

There is a strange sense of family on each 'side' of campus. There are always people out and about and always things for you to join.

    Academic Rigor

When you work hard and are used to working at a college level, these classes will seem stimulating yet not back breaking, if not, then they will definitely be back breaking.

    Tips for prospective students

My tip to you is to join clubs and take classes that interest you. There is no better way to be happy and make friends than making yourself happy and Appalachian is the perfect place to find your niche. Plus, the professors are there to help you not to tear down your self worth like some universities. You will always be good enough here.

    In three sentences

App State is a very welcoming university for entering freshman and transfer students from all over the country. There is a vast mixture of personalities attending and it offers a wide variety of classes and opportunities. The educational structure is set up to benefit those undecided in majors and it is very helpful when looking for a life path.

There are so many different things you can do for fun. Some on campus activities are rock climbing at the SRC and movies for a dollar. Off campus activities include hiking, waterfall jumping, King Street, Boone Mall, Howards Knob and so much more. You well never get bored!

    Food and Dining

There are tons of options for food. In the main dining hall you can get anything from Chick-fil-a to sushi. I gave the food and dining four stars because the second dining hall, Trivette does not have to best options or food quality.

    Dorm Life

I absolutely loved my freshman dorm. Rumor has it that my dorm is the smallest on the East Coast, but I made so many life long friendships because of it. I will admit the tight space was a bit rough at times, but I loved it.

    Academic Rigor

Overall I think Appalachian has a great Academic Rigor. The Chemistry department is definitely lacking though.

    Tips for prospective students

Appalachian is a great college, but be prepared for the cold, as the winter weather can be rough. At the same time, the winters are also a blast, great for skiing, snowboarding, etcetera. I would also advice students to start with general education classes if you do not know your intended major, if you don't you could get behind.

    Dorm Life

The maintenance staff are the nicest people ever. I've lived in the oldest dorm and the newest dorm, and while they're not perfect, you end up not even noticing the quirks after a little while. The university does a pretty good job of selecting a roommate who you can get along with.

    What to do for fun

At Appalachian I'm involved in an A Cappella group which was a great way to make friends. Joining a club is definitely something to do for fun! You can also go hiking along the blue ridge, and swimming in some of the lakes and streams to cool off in the summer. In the winter, App Ski Mountain is a short drive away for all your skiing and snowboarding needs.

    Food and Dining

I have never had a bad experience in any of Appalachians dining halls.

    Dorm Life

For my first two years at Appalachian, I lived in a dorm. My first year I lived in one of the oldest dorms on campus, it wasn't the nicest place, but the bond that I developed with the girls on my floor was great! It really felt like a community! My second year, I was the first person to live in the room of a brand new dorm called Mountaineer Hall. The amenities up there were great, and I really enjoyed it. The only downside was it was really big so it lacked community and it's at the top of a pretty steep hill.

    Academic Rigor

Appalachian is becoming a more competitive school as of late because it's becoming more well known. I would say that it's fairly difficult to get into nowadays, but definitely worth the effort!

    Tips for prospective students

    Campus Safety

I believe that ASU has the most police infested campus in North Carolina. There are three different types of police that like to stalk all of us college kids. The Watauga County police, the Boone police, and the ASU college police. practically every other car on the road is a police vehicle. you see someone pulled over every other street. they are all definitely good at their job don't get me wrong they are very very good.

    Greek Life

Instead of the usual Greek life where all sisterhoods or brotherhoods stay to themselves, our mingle. Some have friends that are in different sororities or frats then they are and they still all just get along fine. They always have tons of parties and tailgates and things among this nature.

    Clubs and Activities

They have plenty of clubs and activities to join if you are interested.

Great for these types of students

Great for student who want to get away from the city life. Great for outdoorsy people. People who like to know others when they walk around campus and at the same time not know everyone.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Not on campus but there is a cult house where it is rumored to believe that a teacher that once taught at ASU was the leader of a cult and now that he is gone that this house is now haunted. So its like a right of passage for the freshman to venture to this house and explore.

    Bang for the buck

My opinion is going to be biased because i love ASU but I am getting everything that i could possible want from a college.

    What to do for fun

There really aren't that many things to do for fun unless you join some sort of club or sport or Greek life. There are a lot of hiking opportunities and water based activities that involve going down a running river on a little inflatable raft. There are the football games, the whole campus comes out for them, we are very football oriented.

    Food and Dining

Since I work at a food a dining place i feel like i would be a little biased but i like the cafeterias. The main one, Central, has the same food practically everyday, but it is vastly bigger than the other cafeteria on campus. The other, trivett, changes its menu everyday. Overall they are both good but a little extra food in your dorm just for you is good. There are also markets on campus, where you can use your meal card instead of going to walmart, but it is insanely priced.

    Dorm Life

Depending on which dorm your assigned to depends on how you look at dorms in general at ASU. The dorm I'm in is pretty normal and very well sized. My roommate and I can both fit comfortably. Other dorms though can barely fit two beds, let alone people and their things. On the other extreme there are very nice dorms that include their own personal bathrooms. Bathrooms in other dorms are community bathrooms, but not as busy as you would think. Nice sized showers and comfortable stalls. again their are some dorms that barely have any space at all for the person themselves, usually in the older dorms though.

    Academic Rigor

By far way more invigorating than boring high school classes. This college will get your brain pumping. The teachers or teacher assistant's will always be available for you when you need a little extra help. Sometimes they may even give out some extra credit. The library is at your finger tips a great tool to take advantage of, so do so. Classes are definitely harder but with actual studying and doing your work it'll be a cake walk.

    Tips for prospective students

I would make sure that this is really the best place for you. Its not a vacation spot but beautiful all the same. You have to make sure you have things to do because Boone is in the middle of no where and the closest thing is about 30-45 minutes away, or in Tennessee. Get a look at the campus as soon as possible. Join clubs, sports or even Greek life. As long as your busy and can balance all the fun with the work college will work out for you.

The most reasonably priced in-state school in North Carolina!

    What to do for fun

Hiking, camping, campus organizations and clubs, leadership activities, volunteering in the community... there's always something to do at ASU!

    Food and Dining

Good food, but a relatively limited number of options, so it can get repetitive.

    Dorm Life

I have not lived in a dorm during my time at ASU, but from word of mouth, I hear they are pretty nice, mostly depending on location.

    Academic Rigor

Truly depends on the department, but the classes I've had at ASU offer a challenge, but certainly also offer the chance to succeed.

    Tips for prospective students

The location is a huge part of life at App State - be sure you like the mountains and the variability in weather year-round! Upon entering the school, begin to build relationships with your professors and academic advisors - come prepared, and they will do their best to help you. Don't be afraid to reach out to any resources available to you!

There are many blue emergency phones spread around campus and one is always in sight, wherever you are. Also, there's an emergency hotline you can call for campus security to assist you if ever you need something. Then, there's Safe Ride, which is a bus system that runs from about 6pm at night to 2am in the morning during weekdays and on weekends so no one has to walk across campus in the dark. It's very convenient and makes me feel extremely safe here.

    Clubs and Activities

There's such a wide range of clubs and happenings here. You could join the Korean Culture Club, a hip hop dance crew, a service club, and a leadership organization, while still being part of a sorority or fraternity. It's amazing how there's a club here for just about every interest.

Great for these types of students

ASU is perfect for any outdoors type of person or just someone who wants a different location from where they're from.

    Bang for the buck

For what ASU gives you, you definitely get your money's worth. The tuition is about 15,000 a year, half of what most colleges cost, and they provide you with rental textbooks and the bus system and housing and food. It's crazy. I definitely thought I'd have to pay for this stuff on my own but it's so convenient that it's counted in the tuition and still cost such a small amount!

    What to do for fun

There's plenty do here from bowling to thrift shopping to hiking. There's mini golf and snowboarding and skiing. And, that's just off campus. On campus, there are so many different events set up just about every day. Also, lots of students join many clubs from a variety of aspects: dance to culture to academic to greek life.

    Food and Dining

There are two different dining halls on campus which serve the typical college dining hall foods: salad bars, wraps, sushi, yogurt, sandwiches, etc. However, there are so many other places to eat here. The student union has Cascades and McAllisters: two places I often eat at. There are two different coffee shops that sell sweets from the local bakery, The Local Lion, and coffee from another bakery, Stick Boy & Co. You can also walk to these locations off campus within 15 minutes. Along King St. there are several different restaurants that sell amazing food like Macado's and Boone Bagelry. I have no problem satisfying my tastebuds here and I don't even have to drive anywhere!

    Dorm Life

The dorms are such friendly places. Some are old and not air conditioned but the weather here isn't that big of a problem. All the dorms hold a bunch of different, interesting activities and there's always new people to meet! Sharing a bathroom here was definitely different but extremely bearable. Overall, I love living in the dorms but would much rather have an apartment or house with close friends.

    Academic Rigor

It definitely depends on what classes you take. Some professors can give you so much work and make it all so difficult but others are very laid-back and give you just enough to strain your brain. General education classes are much easier than courses in your major and I'm sure when you start taking those classes, you'll be thankful for the difficulty.

    Tips for prospective students

If you plan on coming here, have apparel for any kind of weather! Mountain weather is one of the craziest. Be open to all the new things ASU can provide you and just be yourself.

    In three sentences

The campus is beautiful, the people are friendly, and the culture is so thick. There's never a boring moment here and you meet so many different people in all your different classes. All the departments here do their best to ensure the best academic experience to each student.

There are security buttons on campus from place to place in case of an emergency and crime alerts are always sent to students which is great for awareness. Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The one tradition that has held true is the Appalachian club competitions usually held in the fall. This is where clubs compete with each other by creating works of art and play acts abiding by the theme of the year. It is really interesting but hard work as well when it comes to the competitions.

    Bang for the buck

However there is also the recreation center which is a great place to go for physical fitness and fun. There's a running track and swimming pool along with weight training program!

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria area where everyone can eat at is very spacious and has multiple different food options. Their meal plans are also extremely helpful and make things easier. If eating in the cafeteria isn't preferred they do have a local grocery store.

    Dorm Life

Most of the dorms are newly renovated. The dorm buildings are lovely and have a good lay out regarding bathrooms for girls and guys. Also, sometimes there is a kitchen on the bottom floor. The rooms all have a very large window which is nicer than having that jail cell feeling.

    What to do for fun

Appalachian has two gyms, two movie theaters, and a student union packed with fun past times such as billiards, a movie theater, and a restaurant. Most fun activities on campus happen through clubs and organizations, a benefit that makes getting involved even more beneficial. However, most of the fun activities for students are located more in the town of Boone, and great shopping in Blowing Rock or hikes to the Blue Ridge Parkway or Linville Falls are just minutes away.

    Food and Dining

Appalachian does a good job of providing a food options for students, with two dining halls and various cafes and restaurants pocketed all over campus. Staff are consistently kind, polite, and helpful. I would like to see healthier, fresher options become available, although all dining halls do have healthy options available for students.

    Dorm Life

The resident directors and resident assistants go to great lengths to ensure that residence halls are safe, inviting places to be. Expect RAs to have a near constant presence in the dorm at all times as they supervise and build community. But perhaps most importantly, Appalachian State students are incredibly friendly and approachable, and they quickly take ownership of their residence halls and build great communities with fellow residents.

    Academic Rigor

The standards for academic performance are the highest I have ever worked with, but the faculty will meet you halfway and empower you to meet those expectations. Prepare to work and work hard - but also expect a dynamic classroom environment and a rewarding payoff.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved - whether that's in a sport, a performing ensemble, an academic club, or a religious organization, pursue something you're passionate about. The moment when you meet others who love what you love is priceless and will make this campus a home for you.

    In three sentences

Appalachian State University is a nurturing, vibrant university that seeks to empower great young people to pursue the future they dream of. With excellent faculty and a warm, friendly atmosphere, students will be supported and encouraged by teachers and peers as they complete their education. Furthermore, the location can't be beat!

    What to do for fun

Since the school is located in a small town, there are limited options for night-life. Of course there are bars but those are mainly for 21 and over, unless you like sitting around watching people drink while you nibble on french fries. There are two main clubs, but there are a lot of mixed feelings towards their quality. Therefore, house parties are more popular. But the real fun is outdoors. The Blue Ridge Parkway offers tons of trails for hiking and biking. There are also places for skiing/snowboarding if you're into that. On campus there are also a ton of things going on during the week/weekend.

    Food and Dining

Like most colleges, the food is alright. At first it may seem like there are a ton of choices and you'll feel like you'll never get tired of Chik-fil-a or McAlister's. But it will happen. I'd say go for the salad bar, sandwich-making-area, pasta/stir-fry bar. That way you can customize your meal every time. Oh and the the wraps are pretty good as well.

    Dorm Life

Coltrane and Gardner seem to be the least pleasant dorms to live in due to the incredibly small rooms. But I do believe they have been recently renovated. They've also just built a new dorm, which is suite style. Most dorms are conveniently located near classes, except for a few of the nicer, apartment-style ones.

    Academic Rigor

There will be some courses that seem like a joke because they're so ridiculously easy. But that mostly applies to general education courses. Once you start taking courses in your major you'll start to feel that wonderful college stress. It's all good though, because as long as you pick the right professors you'll learn a lot.

    Tips for prospective students

If you're from a typically warm city/town, I'd say make sure to prepare for the winters here. Of course, there will come a time when a medium jacket will be enough because you've become accustomed to the weather. But in the meantime get yourself some gloves, scarves, hats, and thick socks.

    In three sentences

It's a great school with a great atmosphere and incredibly friendly people. It's got a little bit of everything, but it's definitely an outdoorsy school. I used to think I was a city person, but not anymore!

Nothing happens in Boone, I promise. All the cops do is find drunk and high students give parking tickets. Obviously, it is wise to be careful at parties but there isn't much to fear.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a lot of options for every kind of person.

    Bang for the buck

It is expensive, as are all colleges, but definitely worth it.

    What to do for fun

It depends on your interests. I, personally, am a big fan of sports and I like to exercise. There are three exercise facilities on campus available to students, and two have basketball courts in them. There is a swimming pool, an indoor track, and a rock climbing wall. IF you are into outdoor sports you will not be dissatisfied. There is more than enough grassy are to play sports like frisbee, football, and soccer. Also, there are good hiking trails and canoeing/Kayaking options near by. If you have a car, and like snowboarding/skiing, there is a resort about an hour away. The Intramurial sports program is good. A lot of extra curricular activities are available. If you are into music, find a group of friends, as I did, and jam with them. There are plenty of options for that. If you are into video games, there are a lot of people like you and you will be able to enjoy yourself with them. Also, Appalachian State does have a good amount of parties that are fun and safe to attend over the weekends if that is what you are into. As long as you aren't a boring person, you should be able to have fun at Appalachian State University.

    Food and Dining

The food is good and there is plenty. You get a meal plan. Be wary of the coffee place in the Library. Many of my friends have blown away their meal plan money in this place. Being a vegan was a little tough because the lack of variety, but there is food for us as well.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is what you make of it. Depending on your Residents Hall, the quality of the facilities will vary, but unless you are in a more expensive hall, they will be slightly below ideal. The rooms are small, and the bathrooms don't smell pleasant. The best thing you can do for yourself and everybody around you is be friendly, and respectful. Remember, what you are going through, is in know way unique. The thirty other human beings that are on your hall are going the exact same stuff. So when you are edgy because you took a cold shower, and Timmy does something annoying, it is good consider that Timmy also probably took a cold shower before you go off on him. If you are friendly and respectful, however, Dorm like is wonderful. You will make some of the greatest friendships you have ever had. You might not want to go home sometimes because you enjoy it so much. I have stayed up all night before a test because the conversation I was having was just too good to pass up. Watching football on Sundays with all your buddies is awesome. If you are smart about it, dorm life can be the best life. It is like a big huge family. But if you are a butt about it then dorm life can suck.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on your major, classes, professors, and personal academic skills, the Academic rigor can vary. Getting B's and C's isn't hard if you keep track of your classes and study for your tests. But doing better than that is a good bit more difficult. My peers who are making the deans list, put forth a good portion of their day studying for their classes. The general consensus among students is that certain majors, such as Chemistry, Biology, and Physics, and harder than others, such as Sociology, History, and Criminal Justice. That being said, all of them require a good amount of work. Don't get worried though; if you stay on top of your classes, study responsibly, turn in assignments, and are confident, you will do good.

    Tips for prospective students

If you plan on attending Appalachian there are a couple of things that you must know. One, pack a good jacket and a lot of warm clothes. During the winter the temperatures get low and the wind can torturous. Life in dorms can suck if you are not willing to explore. The facilities are not always wonderful, unless you get into the better halls, so the best thing you can do for yourself and everybody around you is be friendly and respectful. Don't get upset over little stuff because everybody is dealing with it. Make friends fast because that is when everybody is most open. Also, laundry sucks, so help out a neighbor and give them a quarter, let them swipe your card, and don't be stingy with your detergent. Everybody is broke and there will come a time when your detergent runs out, your card is empty, and you can't find five quarters. Thats when being nice can really pay off. Last thing, be yourself because if you aren't, you are going to get walked over. There will be people that you can get a long with so don't pretend.

    In three sentences

Appalachian State University is a great college for students who are looking for a diverse education. It is located in a great town which surrounded by very good scenery and full very kind and genuine residents. The professors that I have had experience with are very knowledgable in their fields, and the students are very friendly and easy to get along with.

At first it may seem like you'd never hang out with those people, but they end up being the closest people. Be sure to make rules with your roommate the first few days of being there so there will not be much confrontation.

    Academic Rigor

Depending n the class and the professor, some courses are extremely difficult, due to material much of the time! Most professors will have time aside for one-on-ones in case any help is needed outside of class.

    Tips for prospective students

Bundle up! It gets really windy there! Choose your classes wisely, and make sure to look up your professor before signing up for classes. Take advantage of going to such a wonderful school or that price. It may seem like a lot of money, but the great professors, beautiful campus, great people, and endless opportunities will be worth it.

All though it's really annoying when people don't flush the toilet.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life is average. It's nothing special to me because I would rather live on my own, but everybody is pretty friendly.

    Academic Rigor

Academics are very good here. The workload isn't bad at all and all the assignments are very understandable. Just as long as you turn your work in on time, you can't fail.

    Food and Dining

Ok, so the food might not be the best ever but there is Chick-fil-a and McCalister's that you can use your meal plan money at on campus and there are great places to eat within walking distance of campus.

    Dorm Life

The RA's are the best! Your residence hall really does become your second home. Your neighbors can become some of your best friends and there is always something fun going on.

    Campus Safety

Lots of crime reports on campus, usually sexual harassment issues. Bring pepper spray.

    Greek Life

It exists, but people don't care if you're involved or not.

    Clubs and Activities

Almost any club you can imagine, ASU has it.

Great for these types of students

Free-thinkers, hippies, environmentally friendly people... a huge variety of people. You aren't really judged here.

    Bang for the buck

Greatly priced school, especially for in-state students. You get a LOT of bang for your buck, especially compared to other schools here in NC.

    What to do for fun

There are parties everywhere. The cottages usually have parties every weekend. House parties are fun and plentiful - if you don't know where a party is happening, you're not even looking for one. Char is fun also.

    Food and Dining

Extremely expensive for what you're paying for. The meal plans will leave your stomach growling consistently - I highly suggest bringing extra money with you for food outside of the dining halls.

    Dorm Life

Dorms are reminiscent of prison cells for the most part. With the exception of White, Summit, and Cannon, most dorms are small and poorly lit (Eggers is the worst thing I have ever seen).

    Academic Rigor

I guess this goes with any other college, but it really depends on the professor. Some are laid-back, others are excessively strict. The course load depends on your major and your proficiency with ratemyprofessor.com (seriously a lifesaver for me on many occasions!).

    Tips for prospective students

Break in your shoes before arriving on campus. There are hills everywhere and your feet will be in serious pain if you decide against this advice. Spring semester classes get cancelled often because of the winter weather - make sure you have a windbreaker.

    In three sentences

The people are welcoming. The weather is unpredictable. The academics are sufficient.
