Great for these types of students

AWC tends to have its doors open for any type of student. I have taken both the physical classes and online courses they have, using their WebAdvisor and BlackBoard. It makes taking classes and turning in your work very easy and removes a lot of stress.

    Tips for prospective students

Start early. AWC has deadlines just like any other college, but they fill up remarkably quick. Don't get stuck waiting until the last minute, because the classes you want specifically will be filled! Unfortunately, like most things are, the books are very expensive - so don't forget to apply for Financial Aid!

    Bang for the buck

Though AWC is one of the cheaper community colleges within Arizona, the price might still be a bit steep for the newcomer or someone out of residence. Be sure to look up their scholarships and any Financial Aid open to you.

    Am enjoying being here

AWC allows for many different experiences. I have taken classes on the main campus in Yuma, and have also attended classes at the San Luis branch. Both campuses offer a range of people and learning experiences that fill up what you might miss just taking one of their online classes.

    Bang for the buck

AWC, I believe, is like any other community college. The prices all depend on the credits you take. The good thing is that you can save on books by buying them off other students for a lot cheaper.

    Am enjoying being here

I enjoy attending AWC, because since this is my hometown I know a lot of the people here. I believe that this college has a great environment, and having a good environment makes a big difference in someones college experience.

    Am learning a lot

I feel like I have learned a lot since I started attending AWC, because they have a wide variety of classes that are very interesting. They also have a math center and a writting center where you can get extra help. All of the tutors there are willing to help you out with whatever it is you need, and they make sure you comprehend the material before they let you do it on your own.

    Bang for the buck

Low cost compared to universities, and get your general education.

    What to do for fun

Yuma is a small town but the mall is decent, have the fun factory down the road. Many people travel into Mexico for the night clubs.

    Food and Dining

Food is a little expensive for low quality but i guess there is a variety.

    Dorm Life

Well i do not live in a dorm but heard its great.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are not really difficult but some of the teachers are not so great, have to take it upon yourself to learn.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't get caught up in all the distractions, focus on school because i read the graduation rate of this school and is pretty low.

    In three sentences

This is a small community college but with great atmosphere. There is only about 4000 students so there is not much traffic. Classes are not technically hard, but require some studying.

    Campus Safety

There are security guards patrolling the parking lots and campus. The campus itself is far away from the city of Yuma.

    Greek Life

    None.

    Clubs and Activities

There are clubs such as Spanish, Student Government, Art, Drama and Music, to name a few.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for those who are in Yuma and are deciding whether higher education is something they want to pursue or not.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

the campus itself is not too large. It is very hard to get lost there after a couple of hours browsing around. There is a fountain at the center of the campus.

    Bang for the buck

In State tuition is very inexpensive.

    What to do for fun

Yuma has a lot of outdoor activities such as riding ATV in the dunes to jet skiing by Martinez Lake. For the young city slickers, San Diego and Phoenix are roughly three hours away from Yuma.

    Food and Dining

A Cafeteria provides food such as meals or sandwiches. There is also a Starbucks nearby the Cafeteria.

    Dorm Life

There are dorms, but many students commute to the campus. It seems like the athletes occupy the dorms.

    Academic Rigor

As with any school, or anything in life, it can be considered as you get what you put in.

    Tips for prospective students

General tips for students. Study at least 2 hours for every 1 credit hour. Keep your class syllabus in a folder and always go back through it every so often, this will give you a layout of how the entire class will be structured. Ask questions about things your unsure of, chances are someone else has the exact same question. Always submit work on time, missed work counts as zeros which affect your overall grade. Don't make excuses for missing classes or assignments, the professors have heard them all and excuses show your lack of responsibility.

    In three sentences

Arizona Western College is a community college located in Yuma, Arizona with multiple locations in the surrounding areas. Campus Safety

For the most part I feel like the campus police do a good job, there are phones everywhere and they do presentations on safety and how to react during an emergency.

    Bang for the buck

The credit hour prices keep going up, and I feel like it is due to the unnecessary additions to the school. For example, buildings with floor to ceiling windows and doors. Wow. Not needed.

    What to do for fun

There isn't a whole lot to do in Yuma, much less campus. The school however does have job fairs, and family nights, and puts on shows in the theater.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria,or eatery, is awesome. Great selection, super nice staff, and good food. The area is open, with lots of windows, and usually very clean. Sometimes I stop and have lunch on days when I don't even have class. Very reasonably priced as well.

    Dorm Life

At the end of the spring semester, a young guy got robbed by other students at knife point in his dorm room. This doesn't exactly shout great living conditions to me...

    Academic Rigor

The level of students that go into this school is low, so in turn the school seems to lower its' standards to meet them instead of the opposite. I don't feel like this is any kind of a preparatory school for universities or the professional job market.

    Tips for prospective students

Try to do all of the research regarding your degree yourself. The counseling department will tell you things that aren't true, like certain prerequisites that you don't really need, or will get frustrated at any questions that you have. They do not help at all.

    In three sentences

The counseling department is worthless, and they do not care at all. The schools' website is always going down, and online classes become tough as a result. The teaching staff is impressive, and really take an interest in the students for the most part.

    Campus Safety

I see the Campus police going around frequently. One thing's for sure- they certainly do make you feel safe.

    Bang for the buck

For me, this college is not that expensive compared to others. My parents paid for this years tuition. As for the books and other supplies, I am hoping I can get some scholarships to help my pay for everything else I need.

    What to do for fun

I like to walk around, especially through the other buildings. It's nice to discover the whole campus and meet new teachers and students along the way. The library was pretty cool too.

    Food and Dining

I've only been to the Starbucks. It was really good and the employees are really nice and cheerful.

    Dorm Life

I have seen the dorms, and they are nice and clean, but sometimes the students get a bit loud. However, I live at home and commute to school, so I wouldn't know what it is like to actually live on campus.

    Academic Rigor

So far I was told the basics of what I will learn in my classes. They cover a wide range of topics, and I find them interesting.

Great for these types of students

In the afternoons it can get pretty warm, even in the fall. Around here we say we have two temperatures...Hot and hotter.

    Tips for prospective students

Enroll early. The workers in the financial aid and enrollment departments like to give one piece of info at a time, either ask for all the info up front or be prepared to make several trips back and forth to the school. I was late to make the deadline and several of my friends missed the deadline due to not receiving detrimental information.

    Bang for the buck

I've gotten financial aid and I don't really know how much it is, but I feel satisfied that I have gained knowledge, and I think that's worth the money.

    Am enjoying being here

School life is pretty neat. I think the campus is beautiful underneath all the trees, it's much nicer than town.

    Am learning a lot

The professors are thorough and because of the small class sizes they usually are there for help during office hours.

Food is easy to come by and you have a large selection of food to feast upon. All you have to do to grab a bight is scan your I.D. card , if you're on financial aid, or dish out about five to seven dollars per meal.

    Academic Rigor

Easy class schedule and extremely helpful professors make studying here a very pleasant experience.

    Tips for prospective students

The one thing i would suggest to incoming student's would be to sign up for classes as early as possible because of small class size they tend to fill up very fast.

there are plenty of clubs to join and sports.

Great for these types of students

    any student is welcome.

    Bang for the buck

    What to do for fun

awc has a gameroom with two televisions where anyone can bring their game console and play. the gameroom aslo includes billiard tables and ping pong. recently, bean bags have been placed for a more comfortable stay.

    Food and Dining

    Campus Safety

I feel very safe at school, we have a full time cop on campus and there are call boxes throughout the parking lots. We also have a full time nurse, EMT's can be on site in approximately 10 mins, and the hospital is less than 20 minutes away, and this doesn't include all of the nursing students and their professors who are also on campus. I've never heard of any shootings, drug use, or other problems on campus.

    Greek Life

There are no fraternities or sororities.

    Clubs and Activities

There are several clubs around campus, and the school is frequently hosting job fairs and moral boosting activities.

Great for these types of students

The nursing program is very good, as are some other programs that they offer (haven't focused on them because I don't plan on taking them). This is a great school for any students, whether they wish to stop with an associates or plan on continuing on to a bachelors or higher.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Because I'm not a resident on campus, but instead live with my husband off campus, I'm not familiar with any unusual traditions or locations. The Starbucks located outside the bookstore is one of the few places I know of where people like to congregate.

    Bang for the buck

While the school books are in my opinion very expensive, according to my husband that is common any place you go. I can't speak for the cost of the dorms, but the cost of tuition is very reasonable, and if your planning on continuing your education and getting a bachelors degree, then starting at AWC would be very worthwhile.

    What to do for fun

There are several after school activities available on campus, to include the gym and a recreation room. Off campus, the town of Yuma is less than 10 miles away, and Phoenix and San Diego are both approximately 3 hours away. For those without a car (or to poor to spend a lot of gas money), there is also a transmit system that will take them out to town and back.

    Food and Dining

I love the cafeteria. The food is well made, they change it up on a regular basis, and most of it is healthy. The food is relatively inexpensive, and its even cheaper if you put money on your AWC student card, which allows you to buy food without paying sales tax.

    Dorm Life

I personally don't know, I live with my husband off campus, but from my few classmates who do live on campus, they claim that it is very nice.

    Academic Rigor

There doesn't appear to any middle ground when it comes to academic rigor, some classes are incredibly easy (to me), where as others are incredibly difficult. Some of the difficulty with classes has to do with the material, the rest is due to the teachers; not even the best teachers can make truly difficult material easy, but a brutal teacher can make an easy class difficult.

    Tips for prospective students

If your planning on using AWC as a stepping stone for NAU or another college, insure that the classes you wish to take will actually transfer. Sign up for classes as quickly as you can when registration opens, and order books as early as possible due to a significant difference in the price of used versus new books. Be prepared to bring a sweater or light jacket to class, even in summer, because many of the classrooms are so cold its hard to focus.

    In three sentences

AWC is a good community college for a variety of reasons, to include several good associate degrees and its close association with NAU. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate AWC as an 8, with its only major failing being a shortfall of science teachers. The campus is beautiful and well organized, and the school staff is very helpful in trying to support the students.

    Dorm Life

Some of the dorms get a little loud at times but for the most part its nice.

    Tips for prospective students

    Food and Dining

    Very good and affordable.

    Dorm Life

I was not living in dorms but from what I have heard its pretty relaxing and comfortable.

    Academic Rigor

Teachers will sure challenge you and it is up to you to really succeed and become a better student. These classes are at University level and the teachers expect your work to reflect it.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you talk with a counselor and ask about teacher student communication. There is more than one teacher per subject make sure the one you want is the one most suitable towards your learning style.

    In three sentences

Teachers are very helpful and enjoy researching new opportunities with their students. There is a great learning environment and most teachers show their enthusiasm towards their subject. You will find a wide range of opportunities to choose one when transferring in and out of AWC.

    Campus Safety

By the school administration, students who lack and disrespect to present the right type of conduct will be punished by student suspension, kicked out of class, and could be even expelled from school grounds. There is no cheating allowed, serious fights, vandalism, nor disruptive behavior at all. Arizona Western College keeps a well secured school to include all the students to participate with a well mannered behavior. At the first day of class, the teacher goes over the syllabus at all times. We have the campus police department to protect the school grounds at all times if anything unusual may occur. This campus provides safety from troublesome students, bad people, and others.

Also, it provides services for students with disabilities which has its own building in campus. Also, there are a lot of handicap parking areas and even doors for students with disabilities. Anything dealing with numbers, formulas, and variables make it seem difficult but it isn't. That is why tutors have been available anytime to help students with math and writing as well. I think our academic student performance has improved since because there has been more help provided for students at the student success center. Arizona Western College would be a reliable school that I know at least.
