Always stay in constant contact with your instructors. They realize that life gets in the way sometimes and most of them are willing to work with you if you are unable to attend class for whatever reason. Never be afraid to ask your adviser to substitute classes when needed. I was unable to go into the degree program when I ran out of classes to take for the diploma program. My core classes didn't match up but my adviser understood my circumstances and allowed me to sign up for the math and english classes that were required for the degree program instead of the diploma program.
