Categories Comments Great for these types of students It's great for those that love music and know that their profession is going to be in music. It'll increase your all around musicianship and teach you more about the business side of music as well. Berklee offers everything a musician needs in the real world today!
Tips for prospective students Practice hard and really impress them at your audition. That way you can get some money from them. It's really a lot of work, if you choose to do what you're given. But time management is key!
Bang for the buck It's totally worth every penny, even though it's extremely expensive.
Am enjoying being here I do like is here. There is just so much music everywhere and so many people into the same styles as you. It's great meeting people and have awesome jam sessions.
Am learning a lot There is so much to offer here and all the faculty is there for you. They are so kind and helpful in whatever you need. All the classes you take really seem to mesh with each other. Which is really helpful when doing the work. The teachers are extremely knowledgeable and will make you a better player!

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Musicians, performers, film scoring, drivers, self motivators.
Tips for prospective students Don't decide to come to Berklee in April. You must decide well before that for several reasons. Take time to get the money you will need to attend. Also, spend much time getting ready for your audition. It's worth it.
Bang for the buck It is expensive, but I believe it will pay off later. Get everything out of the classes that you can. Go talk to your teachers, often.
Am enjoying being here Boston took awhile to get used to, don't bring a car here, HA! There is nowhere to park it. The classes are great and the faculty is as well.
Am learning a lot Berklee is difficult, but if you want to learn and make yourself the best you can be, then this is it.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Musicians of any type, songwriters, composers, etc.
Tips for prospective students Be ready to listen to and play a variety of music that you aren't familiar with. Entering students don't get as much freedom as the upperclassmen as far as class selection goes, so you may get stuck in something you don't like. And of course be prepared to practice!
Bang for the buck Although it is very pricey, Berklee is probably the best college for contemporary musicians. With names such as Steve Vai, John Mayer or Quincy Jones who attended the college, it's definitely not something to look away from. You learn a lot and there is a wide variety of choices and combinations to suit your needs as a musician.
Am enjoying being here What's better than going to a college specifically for something you love? Although Berklee is a music college, there are still a variety of liberal arts classes along with other classes. You aren't forced to just taking music classes. Besides that, the teachers are awesome and basically everyone is laid back. All the students are welcoming and it's pretty easy to find someone who has similar tastes in music as you!
Am learning a lot Unlike other colleges, there are only like 20-30 people in your class. It's a lot easier to get the one on one help from your professor that can't be offered at other colleges. There is a wide variety of classes to choose from and you will have the knowledge needed to pursue any career in the music industry.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Anyone who is sincere about becoming involved in the music scene on any level. Berklee is the best!
Tips for prospective students Just do it! Apply, and when you audition, have fun. That's the main thing that will make you shine.
Bang for the buck Yes, YES! And that's saying a lot because attending Berklee is, well, rather expensive. Don't let that throw you though--student aid and private loans can make your dream come true and believe me, it's very worth while!
Am enjoying being here Enjoying isn't the word--I'm in absolute heaven! This is what I was born to do and I'm loving every minute.
Am learning a lot I am learning so much, in so many areas! Learning to be a performer, musician, writer, composer...the list goes on. I just finished my first semester there and scored a 3.95 GPA!

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Great for any music related career, there's Composition, Contemporary Writing and Production, Electronic Production and Design, Film Scoring, Jazz Composition, Music Business/Management, Music Education, Music Production and Engineering, Music Therapy, Performance, Professional Music, and Songwriting... so we pretty much have it all, but unless you're getting some financial aid, grants, or scholarships I think the tuition is a little over the top.
Tips for prospective students If you are going into any other Major besides MP&E or EPD, neither of which I am, then be ready to Network and create your own opportunities, you need to make your own bang for your buck here, which is exactly what I have done, but something I have seen from few of my peers.
Bang for the buck Unless you're a Music Production and Engineering Major or an Electronic Production and Design Major (which I am neither) which are the best funded departments then NO, you are not getting any bang for your buck, all other majors should be charged significantly less tuition, this college is stingy with giving it's student body, those majors are only well funded because of their department chairs' being complete animals.
Am enjoying being here Berklee is an incredible place to network for your future. I have chosen my friends carefully and spent my time wisely. I made sure that the doors were opened for me so I have a career when I graduate.
Am learning a lot This college is what you make of it, getting A's isn't enough, I put the knowledge I learn every semester to serious use outside of school, as well as befriending my teachers and visiting them during their office hours.

Categories Comments Campus Safety the campus is in a fairly safe area of town and security guards are always present and available to escort anyone at any time.
Greek Life there isn't a greek system in this school yet.
Clubs and Activities there's a variety of clubs from songwriting to racquetball and quidditch. the school also sponsors free classes every week for yoga, dance, basketball, etc.
Great for these types of students dedicated, talented, focused, and goal oriented musicians.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus the 939 cafe is a school owned cafe that hosts lots of live music every week. it's a great way to see new music or find an opportunity to perform.
Bang for the buck the school is very, very expensive, but it's an incredible school.
What to do for fun the school offers a lot of student activities for a small price or for free. it helps keep students connected with one another and creates a sense of belonging in the school.
Food and Dining the cafeteria has a fair variety of buffet style food every day, but the hours are somewhat inconvenient.
Dorm Life there are very few dorms and most students live off campus. the dorms that are available are expensive, but convenient and fairly spacious/well kept.
Academic Rigor most students get very little sleep at this school. there's not as much homework is the sense of typing reports and writing papers, but there's a high expectation for practicing new materials daily. the homework that is given is always extremely time consuming, but very useful.
Tips for prospective students save as much money as possible, practice your instrument more than you think is practical, and be prepared to meet a great amount of musicians and contacts that will help you in your career.
In three sentences berklee is extremely expensive, but i firmly believe you are getting exactly what you pay for. with the exception of a few, the teachers are highly knowledgeable and always willing to help with any question. the competition is high, and the learning experience is irreplaceable.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck For as much as we pay to go here, I was literally expecting everything to be perfect. Berklee is far from perfect, but its pros far outweigh the cons. Students get the chance to work with seasoned veterans of the music industry and teachers who are active musicians. The skills you learn here will be indispensable once out in the real world.
What to do for fun There's plenty to do in and around Berklee. Once the semester gets up and rolling, the Student Activities Center hosts Caf Shows at night around 10 PM. Also, there's a bowling alley right down the street from the 150 Mass Ave building, among other fun activities.
Food and Dining Honestly, Berklee's cafeteria is just okay. Most would say it's awful, which it can be, but most of the time it's decent. I wish the higher-ups would invest more in it so the overall experience would be better.
Dorm Life Dorm life at Berklee is wonderful. I've stayed in two of the three dorms (150 Mass Ave and 98 Hemenway) in my time here, and know several students at the other dorm (270 Commonwealth). 150 and 270 are definitely more open communities, while 98 is more for older students who are just looking for a quieter place to live. Each dorm has events throughout the semester, and all the RAs are awesome and helpful.
Academic Rigor Berklee can definitely be difficult for students who have not had any music theory training, and is still challenging for those who have. Teachers understand this and are very helpful during office hours and before/after class. Utilize this time if you need help!
Tips for prospective students One tip for prospective students is to visit the campus to get a feel for Berklee. Tours are generally run in the midday during classes, so prospective students and parents can get a glimpse of a typical Berklee day. Another tip is to do some long-term planning, in terms of student loans. If loans are not an absolute necessity, don't get them.
In three sentences Berklee is definitely the place to be, for contemporary music. If you are at all interested in Pop, Rock, R&B, Jazz, Country, etc., Berklee is one of the best. From the experienced teachers, to the state-of-the-art facilities, to the vast amount of artists brought in over the course of the year, Berklee is a mecca of music.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Great for people who are passionate about music. If you just enjoy playing here and there and have no real love for the music, you will hate it. Berklee requires that everyone understand music from the boring basics. Your first two years will be filled with boring theory and ear training classes that will drive you insane. If music is just a passing fancy for you, making it through those classes will be really tough. You have to love music. Be passionate!
Tips for prospective students Go in with the right attitude and meet people! Don't go in thinking you're the best or that you're there to compete with those around you. Berklee, being a music school, is not nearly as competitive in spirit as one might think. When I was leaving, I was terrified I would never make friends because everyone would look down on me. I quickly learned that everyone is as impressed with your talents as you are with theirs, and it is a community of musicians, not some televised competition.
Bang for the buck While you have to learn, at least you're learning from experienced musicians who have done many inspirational things. They all have so many stories to tell, and most of them seem to be extremely passionate about what they're teaching. It is worth every penny!
Am enjoying being here From the future stars you meet to current stars (Bruce Springsteen visited when his son came to audition, and many more visit on a regular basis to speak with the students), there is always something interesting going on. Not to mention, you are surrounded by music everywhere you go. This place is amazing, and most of the upperclassmen I have spoken to say they hate leaving because the experience is so great.
Am learning a lot I have improved so much since I started attending Berklee. My singing is so much better, and I understand my voice a lot better than I used to. I love learning here, and most of the teachers are outstanding people.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck It's incredibly expensive but when you look around the school you can see where the money goes to. All the equipment is industry standard and the buildings are very neat and organized. The education you will recieve here will defintely be worth the money you're spending, there's smaller classes which means more potential for one on one advice and help with your professors.
Will enjoy being here It's in a great part of Boston with many opportunites for networking!
Will learn a lot There's so many programs and a lot of people who are willing to help you as long as you ask for it. There's also many resources for you to take advantage of!

Academic Rigor haven't experienced it yet.
Tips for prospective students keep at it! remember... esse quam videri... to be, rather than to appear to be. (berklee's motto)

Categories Comments What to do for fun Make music, and network.
Food and Dining The caf, has pretty good food! for such a small school, i think it is great!
Dorm Life Berklee has its own dorms. Berklee students also have a choice of living off campus, which is more than a viable option, because Berklee is in the middle of a city.
Academic Rigor Berklee is an academically demanding school. You can take up to 10 classes a semester and each class has its own projects and test that ask a lot out of you.
Tips for prospective students Come with an open mind, and be ready to receive.
In three sentences Berklee is the best contemporary music school to attend in the US. It ranges from all different styles from jazz to classical. The students and teachers are great sources of networks.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck Berklee's pretty expensive, but I'm assuming it's well worth the price.
What to do for fun Almost anything! It's in Boston.
Food and Dining Absolutely wonderful.
Dorm Life Very nice, but pretty costly, and not too roomy compared to most dorms. I'm considering renting a room near the city instead of this or renting an apartment.
Academic Rigor Dedication everywhere you go!
Tips for prospective students If you're on the not-so-rich side, like me, work way ahead of time to find scholarships!
In three sentences Absolutely brilliant school to go to. Although I haven't started yet, just visiting showed me how incredibly dedicated both the students and staff are at what they do.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I felt really safe in and around campus.
Great for these types of students Dedicated to their craft. Open minded. Hard working. Seeking the best education for their musical future.
Bang for the buck You can't put a price on the pursuit of passion! I believe wholeheartedly that Berklee is worth every penny.
What to do for fun Chill in jam sessions, explore Boston, sing, sing, sing!
Food and Dining Loved those cheesy eggs!!!
Dorm Life I stayed in the dorms for the summer program. The other participants come from everywhere but all have the same love of music. Typical dorm beds but the rooms were nice sized and in a really cool location.
Academic Rigor I attended the summer program in 2011. There was alot to it but everyone helped each other which made the program really fun. I hear the curriculum is rigorous but definitely worth the effort.
Tips for prospective students Do your research before you audition. Read student blogs and learn from their auditions. Be prepared to work hard but because you love music, it won't feel like work...mostly.
In three sentences Warm, accepting atmosphere. Knowledgeable, well-connected staff. Excellent location.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Security 24/7. I didn't feel as if something bad would ever happen. It seems pretty safe close to campus
Clubs and Activities Many ensembles to join that the school has. Also, many students form bands.
Bang for the buck I will say the cost drives many students away. The only reason I give it five stars is because of how many opportunities it gives for students to receive scholarships and work on or near campus.
What to do for fun Music! Everywhere! Along with being surrounded by great musicians you also are in Boston. What more is there to say? Many historical sites and delicious restaurants. Fenway Park is also walking distance away.
Food and Dining I have visited over the summer and the food tasted like it came from a restaurant. One of the faculty had said they were having not the best day with cooking and I was surprised because of ho good it still tasted.
Dorm Life New dorm building on 160 Massachusetts avenue is incredible looking and I have only seen pictures so far. Sixteen story dorm with Cafeteria and Studio. Expensive but well worth it.
Academic Rigor Depending on what you're major is and what teachers you receive just like any other college. In the end you just have to be on top of things and do the work.
Tips for prospective students Do not just think it is all fun and games. It is an expensive school that offers more activities and majors than I had ever imagines. It is not a school of rock or just some place to jam away at. It is a college where you learn how to make it in today's society and you get out what you put in, and there is a lot to get out.
In three sentences If you are planning to learn how diverse music is in today's society and keeping up with the new forms of music while studying an older form, Berklee is for you. World renowned faculty who teach you how to be the best musician you can be out in a real life setting, along with the amazing city of Boston where small to large concerts are given. Networking is obviously crucial in today's world which is why I would rather no place else.

Categories Comments Greek Life Greek life is not big at Berklee. If you require parties, kegs, and fake platforms, I recommend looking elsewhere.
Clubs and Activities If it doesn't exist, you can create it!
Bang for the buck The learning center provides free tutorials and forums for all those interested in learning more about a particular subject (i.e. how to record vocals, how to best use your mac/music software while at Berklee...etc).
What to do for fun Jam!
Food and Dining Haven't tried the school's cafeteria, but have heard good things about their food and the variety provided. There are many great places to eat around Berklee as well (B.Good's right across the street- a personal favorite of mine, with hamburgers and sweet potato fries that hit the spot).
Academic Rigor Challenging. Assignments are lengthy and usually require a combination of hours of practice (on principal instrument), reading & analysis (the theoretical side of music), immersion into the techy side of life (facilitating garage band, logic, etc.), and great communication (with professors and classmates)....among other things.
Tips for prospective students A competitive drive is essential ** however ** it is important to never lose sight of one's individual goals. Aim to be competitive with oneself. Appreciate the talent that surrounds you, but never forget where you are and where you'd like to be weeks, months, and years from now.
In three sentences Berklee is a friendly community comprised of awesome musicians- those that teach and those that are eager to be taught. The environment is very open and non-threatening, which gives a new student (or a returning student) the opportunity to grow at their own pace. Also, the resources (computers, forums, music, and supplemental materials for classes) are abundant.

Great for these types of students Any one who is involved in any style of music, and is willing to work hard.
Bang for the buck Berklee is an expensive school, however the opportunities are great as far is getting a job after getting out.
What to do for fun Boston is a great city full of music, sports, and tourist attractions. There is always a concert, sporting event or, countless other things to do.
Food and Dining There is a good cafeteria at Berklee and losts of other places to eat around the school.
Dorm Life Dorm life is good, it is nice being surround by other helpful students at Berklee.
Academic Rigor Berklee has a challenging ciriculum of classes that will test your knowledge of every aspect of music.
Tips for prospective students In your audition be sure to prepare yourself for whatever they might ask you to do. There is list of things that you can expect to have to do, however your goal is to go above and beyond. Also try to present yourself as professionally as possible and provide your resume and any other documentation of your experience.
In three sentences Berklee is a great school for anyone who is pursuing a career in music. It offers the widest range of study as far as genres of music, and different careers in the music industry. Greek Life No Greek life on campus.
Clubs and Activities Berklee has all types of clubs for all types of students from African American to Gay and Bisexual.
Great for these types of students Musicians who love music. Do not dissuaded by the notion that Berklee is only for contemporary musicians. I am a Foreign Classical Opera Singer and I find Berklee extremely qualified for my particular genre.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The campus is spread throughout the Back Bay of Boston, MA. Locating certain buildings can be difficult and confusing but there are information desk and maps to help students.
Bang for the buck Tuition includes not only up to 16 credit hours of education, but also counseling if need, concerts, workshops and private weekly tutoring in all subjects!
What to do for fun The school has concerts that students can attend, game and movie nights and a Student activity center that holds varies activities daily.
Food and Dining The food is pretty good. Everything is Buffet All You Can Eat style offered for breakfast lunch and dinner. Everyday a foreign cuisine is featured.
Dorm Life Dorm life at Berklee is best described as a community area. Students often have jam sessions together and participate in events held by the dorm.
Academic Rigor Berklee College of Music teaches both various music related courses and Liberal Arts. The teachers are demanding and do require a great deal of responsibility and time outside of class but, students are given many opportunities and tutoring options.
Tips for prospective students If students are interested in attending Berklee I believe that he or she must have dedication to their music and have a fierce hunger to learn about not only their genre's of choice, but varies genre's orginated around the world.

Categories Comments Campus Safety You're living in a major city, not on a secure campus, however I found the Boston Back Bay area to be very enjoyable.
Great for these types of students Jazz, rock, and contemporary musicians who understand theory and have plenty of training already under their belt.
Bang for the buck Extremely expensive.
What to do for fun There are concerts almost every night!
Food and Dining Only one full time cafeteria but many local eateries are within walking distance.
Dorm Life It is more like city apartment living.
Tips for prospective students Only extremely committed and talented musicians should apply here.

Food and Dining For such a small school, I think it is great.
Dorm Life You get to meet people from all around the world. And each dorm has events throughout the semester, and all the RAs are friendly and helpful.
Academic Rigor At Berklee, most of the students get very little sleep. The homework that is given is always extremely time consuming, but very useful.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I feel very safe living at Berklee as all of the buildings are staffed by 24 hour security guards and you have to swipe you ID card and show it to them before you can enter any dormitory. Also, one of the things you get used to drowning out is the sound of fire trucks, police sirens and ambulances. You can be sure that Back Bay is a safe place to live.
Greek Life There is no Greek life at Berklee unfortunately.
Clubs and Activities There are many clubs that you can join on campus. Ones that I'm apart of are the Film Scoring Network, the Musical Theater Club, the Sound Design Club and the Video Game Music Club. There're also clubs like the Electronica Club and the Classical Guitarists Club. Pretty much anything you'd want to talk to people about, you can find a club for here at Berklee. And if not, you can always start your own! There's also the Student Activities Center (SAC) that hold events and give away prizes, tickets and the like for events. You can also just go there to hang out as they have a television and a large pool table.
Great for these types of students Smart, creative, hard-working, goal-oriented students that will work to succeed in life. This school isn't for those who just want to coast on their parents' checkbook. There are those here who do that, but they don't get anything out of the education and they're left with nothing when it comes time to make their own living in the real world apart from their parents.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Berklee doesn't really have any weird traditions and the campus is comprised of a handful of buildings within the Boston Back Bay area, so there aren't any particular locations of interest really. Although the 1140 Boylston St. building is the oldest and first Berklee building that existed.
Bang for the buck I'm still not quite sure how I feel about this as I'm struggling to pay for my final semester and I'm dreading having to pay back my loans over the next 10-15 years. Having said that, the teachers are the best there are (at least the ones I've had) and you can't find majors like these at any other school, so I might say you get a good deal for your money. I (and many others) still think it's WAY over priced though.
What to do for fun To be honest, I don't usually do much outside of school as I'm very invested in my studies. That being said, there are many movie theaters in the area that are walking distance from the school. Also, everything else is a short T ride away such as the Aquarium, great dining like Charley's, The Hard Rock Cafe and Whiskey's. Also, Boston is the walking city and there are many wonderful places to go such as my favorite, the Charles River Promenade. Be sure to check this out!
Food and Dining This is the one aspect that isn't really the best. The food in the cafeteria is very bland and tasteless at times. It's as if they've never heard of using butter for anything cause their bakery products are always dry as cardboard. It's not the worst food you'll find anywhere, but other colleges' food services are much better than ours. I will say though that every once and awhile for a holiday or special event, they will make food that tastes a lot better (usually themed, like for Halloween). Sadly, this means that they CAN make better food, but choose not to.
Dorm Life Dorm life is good and the Housing office does a good job of matching roommates up who are compatible with each other. If you can, try and get a single room though. You get all the privacy you need and can stay up doing homework as late as you need to without worrying about your roommates. It does cost a few hundred more a semester though.
Academic Rigor It can be a very challenging school, especially if you do a dual major. MP&E is the hardest academically and work-load wise. Consider the challenge before doing a dual like MP&E and EPD or Education and Therapy. You'll end up hating life if you pick something that's too intense, especially if you're working a job at the same time.
Tips for prospective students If you're transferring credits, talk to Registration, not the specific department that the credits fall into. If you're living on campus, try to be an RA (Resident Assistant). You can get 80% of your housing costs paid for that way.
In three sentences The best contemporary music school anywhere. Has state-of-the-art technology for each major. World class instructors that are the top of their fields.

Bang for the buck Some of the best faculty in the world. Each faculty member currently works in the music field.

Food and Dining Food and dinning can be covered by scholarship. Berklee is in the heart of Boston. There are many dinning places in the downtown Boylston area.
Dorm Life Dorm life can be very pricy.. It is advised to find off campus living.
Academic Rigor Berklee is one of the best schools of its time. Including one of the only schools that offer film Scoring as an undergraduate source of study./
Tips for prospective students Practice and study hard. Berklee is hard to get in and can be very challenging. Stay on top of grades and performance tests. If anyone slacks, they will surely be dismissed from the college.

Categories Comments Greek Life There is NO greek life at all in Berklee.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Allston has wonderful culture--I liked it a lot better than in the Boston city. Newbury street has fashion week which is always nice. MFA has wonderful concerts and so do MIT.
What to do for fun There are a lot of parties happening all the time I would try to control that side of Berklee life but there is the MFA and many other things to do--In Allston and Cambridge there are great places to go.
Food and Dining Food is awful! They have a saying The Berklee Blast You'll have to find that out for yourself. They serve typical cafeteria food, but it's really horrible. The only okay thing is the breakfast..but you MUST get up early for that.
Dorm Life Dorms are really nice, very tiny but they have a good dorm life. I wouldn't recommend staying in the dorms forever but it's a good start.
Academic Rigor Academics are easy, however they do take a lot of busy work. You may wan to try your best to test out of all the unnecessary classes like m-tech/Eartraining, etc.
Tips for prospective students Make sure your audition is very very prepared. Go ahead and expect to drop your ego and your inhibitions about music. Always be open minded for every opportunity.
In three sentences Berklee College is a great place, but always remember to stay focus. May get really easy to get side track from your art form. Everyone is wonderful though, never a dull moment.

Bang for the buck It's very expensive to go here, but well worth it. You'll come out with a world class education, and experience that you will find nowhere else.
What to do for fun This is Boston! Shopping, neighbouring universities, sports and dining. The World is your oyster.
Food and Dining The food here is 24hr and a great variety.
Dorm Life Dorm rooms are spacious and you have your own space to work.
Academic Rigor There is a lot of work to do here. Keep your head down and don't get distracted!

Categories Comments Campus Safety Overall the city itself is safe but one time I did hear of an unarmed robbery that happened somewhere around campus. Other than that, I don't hear much. There are police guarding the buildings and the streets. Overall, a safe environment.
What to do for fun There are concerts held at the BPC and the cafe, as well as discounts available for going to concerts away from Berklee. There are also activities held every now and then where you simply can just hang out and have fun or jam out.
Food and Dining Berklee has a cafeteria with it's own food. I have never eaten there, but I do hear that they offer great food. I know that they offer meal plans for that you purchase per semester, and it is pretty reasonably priced, and it includes 3 meals. If you aren't under a meal plan, you can still purchase a meal, or you may eat on the many other options Berklee has around it's campus.
Academic Rigor Berklee is not heavily based on your traditional core classes but that does not mean you won't be taking them. Upon the teacher's discretion, she may find himself/herself teaching such subject from a new approach that breaks what one may be used to in a traditional classroom. Core classes however, will be more heavily based on music. Berklee has their own method of teaching you music since it is more contemporary and most associated towards jazz and styles that have descended from jazz, which included funk, rnb, rock, pop, and etc but they also do teach more traditional methods if that is what you seek. It is important to stay on top of your work, but as long as you have a passion for it, you should do great. If you slack off, then you wasted your time and it will show.
Tips for prospective students Stay on top of your work, make a lot of friends, and take on every opportunity available.
In three sentences The school offers a variety of resources, either through media, workshops, clinics, etc. The professors there are there because it is their passionate to teach. The school simply has a great music program and is catered for a wide variety of students with different backgrounds, but with similar aspirations in becoming a musician.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Berklee offers a safe walk program so you can call a number at night if your'e nervous about walking home and one of the security guards will walk you home.
Clubs and Activities There are tuns of clubs out there and if you're not 21 yet there is the club Rise for 18+ and they don't serve alcohol.
Great for these types of students musicians, you stay up late, don't know when to stop practicing, and you're a little out there and weird, which is just how everybody at Berklee is so you'll fit right in!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Berklee Beach is the area right in front of the 150 Mass Ave building where everybody who smokes, smokes. We call all of our buildings by their street address numbers like 150, 7, 1140, except for the building with the administration offices in it, that's the Uchida Building.
Bang for the buck It's a little expensive, but what private college isn't nowadays? You can get A LOT out of Berklee if you want to and personally I think it's definitely worth the money I'm spending to go there.
What to do for fun Your'e in Boston! Go enjoy the city! You can go to the park or one of the many museums around the city or have a jam session or you can get dinner in the North End (my favorite). There are tuns of jazz clubs around the city and there is always a show you can see, it could be at Sculler's Jazz Club or at New England Conservatory, but there is always some sort of musical entertainment going on in the city on any given night. Berklee is great and offers this Symphony Card for $3 and you can go to Symphony Hall and see performances by the Boston Symphony Orchestra for free with it once a week! There are plenty of things to do for fun.
Food and Dining The cafe is a personal choice I think. Some people really like it, others really hate it. Personally I really don't like cafe food. But if you live in the dorms then you have to get meals in the cafe and it's an all you can eat sort of place and they make specialty meals and deserts and have a salad bar, so you definitely have a lot to pic from and the guys that work there are typically really nice and like chatting with us.
Dorm Life I never lived in the dorms, and they are building new ones that will be ready in Fall 2013 I believe but the dorms aren't horrible. You get a mini fridge and you can bring in a microwave and they have practice rooms in the dorms and the ones in the 150 Mass Ave building don't have community bathrooms, they're all private ones in the rooms which is a plus!
Academic Rigor Berklee has more than just music classes, they also have academics like English and Science and Math. The academic classes are usually really in depth and you learn a lot and end up having to write essays and reading books sometimes, but they are never too overbearing and the teachers all understand that we're musicians, not English Lit majors. The music classes are always challenging and you learn so much in them!
Tips for prospective students When you're doing your entrance interview you can be really excited about Berklee, it helps with how much scholarship and financial aid the college with award you. You can always go talk to the guys in the Registration Office and the Student Center is an amazing place to go and talk to other students or councilors about any problems or concerns you might have.
In three sentences Berklee offers a huge variety of majors for musicians. They are there for you if you need help deciding which of the many majors is right for you. The teachers are fantastic and you learn a lot from everybody, both students and teachers.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus safety department is always alerting you of things happening and what is currently happening. They're very good about their email/phone alerts. It's not annoying, either. It's necessary.
Clubs and Activities There are a few student-run clubs but most of the clubs/activities are worth it and fun!
Great for these types of students If you're very hard-working, yet spontaneous and fun this is a perfect place for you! Even if you like to be in and quiet, the apartments/dorm rooms are cozy. :)
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There aren't really an unusual traditions that I know of so far.
What to do for fun There are so many things around! There are plenty of theaters, both movie and play theaters, as well as places such as bowling allies, Fenway Park is right there, and festivals are happening a lot of the time, as well.
Food and Dining You get sick of the food really quickly and it's pretty expensive. The meal plans work and are convenient.
Dorm Life The dorms are extremely convenient, but they are very expensive to live in. The 150 building is by most classes as well as the cafeteria (if you have the meal plan).
Academic Rigor The teacher's hardness varies, but in most classes they are strict and what they are teaching you is relevant to music and its industry.
Tips for prospective students It's quite expensive. Once your first year is over, move off-campus - it's cheaper. There's a lot to do all the time. Don't feel overwhelmed. You have to be serious about wanting to pursue music. You have to want music 24/7 to attend this college and be successful.
In three sentences Berklee is an amazing connections school. You can meet the people you'll start a band/collective with. It teaches you what you need to know in order to be successful in the Music Industry of today.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Public Safety communicates with the entire campus via email to alert us of new procedures and precautions to take. I feel very well looked after.
Clubs and Activities From social issues to academic to creative issues, there's a club for everyone!
Great for these types of students All types. Fresh out of high school, older students already in the depths of their careers, international students, etc.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There's music everywhere! There's quiet spaces in the library to do work, but the environment on this campus is unlike any other. The halls are overflowing with talent.
Bang for the buck Berklee is pricey, because you're paying for some of the best of the best. Another reason to work extra hard! Berklee offers tuition payment plans which are a great option for some!
What to do for fun Sooooooo many great concerts in the metro area, and Berklee students get discounts tickets to some of them! Berklee students also have FREE access to the Fine Arts Museum, which is lovely. When the weather is nice, there are beautiful bike trails and parks for recreational fun. And the beach is only 45 minutes away. There are almost endless options for dancing and nightlife to suit your tastes!
Food and Dining On campus cafeteria (where there are often late night performances and concerts by fellow students. Dining doesn't get much better than that!) There are tons of nearby and affordable places to grab food between classes!
Academic Rigor Be ready to work hard towards your goals. These teachers take you seriously as a musician. Do yourself a favor and take yourself seriously, as well. Learning here is fun!
Tips for prospective students Be sure to prep well for your audition and interview! Remember that Berklee looks for your potential, and knows everyone is coming to the school with a different skill set. They have your best academic interests at heart. Have fun and stay open!
In three sentences Berklee has incredibly thorough teachers. There are countless opportunities for learning and growth outside the classroom including workshops and physical fitness programs. Berklee is incredibly welcoming to all students, regardless of age, experience, and place of origin.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus is pretty safe, although there have been records of people getting things stolen, such as laptops, for not being careful.
Greek Life Non-existent
Clubs and Activities I am currently in the Berklee Christian Fellowship club. There are many clubs offered in Berklee. I was interested in looking into the Hardcore/Metal club here.
Great for these types of students Berklee is a great school for anyone looking to pursue after music, can think or dream of doing nothing but music, people looking to network through music.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Berklee teaches based on contemporary music rather than classical as taught in most schools. Classical music is taught in Berklee and a lot of students pursue after classical music here, but the core classes, such as ear training, harmony, and arranging look to contemporary pop music, jazz, blues, and even rock.
What to do for fun Attend concerts held by students, chill with friends, which you'll make pretty quickly if you put yourself out there, go eat, jam out with other musicians, or just sit and write music.
Food and Dining There are many great restaurants around Berklee. Most students tend to eat in the cafeteria, or the caf. The food in the caf is pretty good considering that it is cafeteria.
Dorm Life I am not in a dorm, I am off campus.
Academic Rigor I am a freshman who just entered this semester. The music classes I am taking are fairly challenging but still pretty easy.
Tips for prospective students Definitely do your best to come here if you want to have a career in music.
In three sentences Berklee College Of Music is a great school. The music classes are excellent and teachers are very helpful and make classes interesting. The only drawback would be some of the liberal arts classes that don't have anything to do with music and seem like a waste of time and money

Categories Comments Campus Safety I have never had any problem with safety. Campus security is always strolling around the school. The few times there have been some sort of security threat the school sends out emails warning students to be cautious. Berklee is in the Back Bay area in Boston which is a pretty nice area so I haven't heard of too many problems.
Greek Life There is no greek life at Berklee.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Probably the most unusual location on campus is the Berklee beach. It's the spot in front of the main building (150 Mass ave.) where a large group of students stand outside between classes to smoke.
Bang for the buck Berklee is a very expensive school but I believe if you put in the hard work and make the most out of your experience it is well worth it. The friends you meet and skills you gain make it a great experience.
What to do for fun Boston is a great city with a lot of things to do. Every weekend there is bands playing somewhere, local shows, and a few larger venues where more popular bands come to play.
Food and Dining I've never eaten at the caf but I've only heard bad things from everyone about it. There's a few restaurants close to Berklee that are good to eat at. Some fast food restaurants and others.
Dorm Life I was never placed in the dorms since they have a pretty small amount of rooms for entering students. The new building that is being built will have more dorms from what I understand. I have heard mixed things about the dorms. Some people love it and others hate it. It's a good place to make friends, all of my current roommates met and the dorms and met most of their friends from the dorms.
Academic Rigor Berklee is a school where you get out what you put in. I have met students who try to get by with as little work as possible and there are also students who work hard and make the most out of the curriculum.
Tips for prospective students Be prepared for your audition. You can find the requirements for the auditions at the berklee website.
In three sentences Berklee is a great place to learn about every aspect music and the music business. The private lessons and labs are the best parts of the school and the teachers are some of the best players in the world. The core music classes help to make you a better musician in every aspect.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Berklee is always on-point and up to date when it comes to security and safety on campus. Students are texted, e-mailed, and called about drills, false alarms, incidents, and any other security issue. Recently a new building is being built on campus and students are up to date with wind advisory issues and the overall construction. We are also quick to learn about any attacks in any area of Boston.
Greek Life None.
Clubs and Activities Clubs are a great way to meet people at Berklee. We have all kinds of clubs ranging from music-related to politically-related. Based on your major, a club is designated to meet each week to help the student within that major, to introduce artists or have guest speakers on that topic. Berklee also has a wonderful LGBT club called BUGLE, a songwriting club, and many others. New clubs open each semester and Berklee is open to hearing new ideas.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus None.
Bang for the buck Every city is pretty expensive. But Boston is like a mini New York - just less organized in terms of streets. With the Berklee Card, students get great discounts for food at local restaurants which definitely helps since tuition can burn a hole in the pocket. But if you don't have a Berklee Card, look for local coupons or deals in Boston magazines, Berklee coupon books, and online. Discounts for Duck Tours, dining in experiences, and even local stores are all around.
What to do for fun Berklee is in the center of a very busy South End Boston area. Fenway park is nearby, as well as Kenmore Square, Newbury Street, the beautiful Commonwealth Avenue, the shops on Boylston Street, etc. If you want to catch a game, head on over to Fenway to watch the Red Sox, or take the green line T to Government Center to watch the Celtics or the Bruins. If you're into shopping, Newbury Street is like the Rodeo Drive of Boston. Some of the best stores, restaurants, hair salons, and underground clothing shops are living on that street. Check out places like Charlie's Steakhouse, Trident Bookstore, Newbury Comics, Johnny Cupcakes, Kashmir Indian Restaurant, Bostone Pizza, and Upper Crust Pizza - to name a few. The Prudential Center sits on Boylston street, just across from the biggest Apple Store in America. The Pru is a gorgeous mall with great restaurants like PF Changs, The Cheesecake Factory, and California Pizza Kitchen. You can also book Duck Tours at the Pru for a fun way to tour Boston. Boylston Street also has great restaurants on it. Definitely check out Chili Duck for some great Thai food. Kenmore Square and Coolidge Corner both have really great theaters. Regal Theater at Kenmore Square houses well-known films while Coolidge Corner Theater in Brookline houses Indie films and underground documentaries. Also, Berklee has many shows for local artists, students, and touring artists at the Berklee Performance Center and the Red Room at Cafe 939 on Boylston. The options are endless in a city like Boston. You can go exploring and find something new to do every day.
Food and Dining Berklee has become more advanced when it comes to food and dining. The cafeteria has been renovated and changed quite a bit and is open pretty much all day for the students. The Berklee Card is an add-money system that you can use at the cafeteria with a meal plan or at the neighboring restaurants and coffee shops. Berklee is currently adding more and more restaurants to accept the Berklee card, and with an easy and functional online way to add money, this card is great for any student.
Dorm Life Although every student experiences dorm life differently, it sometimes has more downs than ups. The cost of living on campus is high and because of the possibility of a roommate playing an instrument, like guitar or drums, could be stressful. Living off-campus is recommended, and it is rather easy to find cheap apartments around the beautiful Boston and Berklee campus area. Off-campus living is suggested strongly.
Academic Rigor Some classes are of course harder than others, but every class relates to the other. Classes like counterpoint and tonal harmony will prove to be challenging, but Berklee does a good job of starting students off on easier levels and working them up to these more complex classes. Harmony 1-4 and Ear Training 1-4 are vital, and as the title suggests they do get more time consuming as the levels progress. Students should dedicate their time to picking up as much as possible in these levels and use these lessons for other familiar classes, like conducting or sight-reading.
Tips for prospective students It is important for students to take this school seriously and not treat it as just an easy-out art school. Selecting a major and discovering what you want to do with music are two critical aspects of joining this institution. Be sure to follow the outlines on recommended classes to take each semester, attend class regularly, and put your best effort forward. No matter what, never be afraid to seek help and/or guidance. This school has wonderful resources and very friendly people who are willing to help you succeed, as long as you are dedicated enough to do so.
In three sentences Berklee is an incredibly eclectic school. The classes are taught by diverse and incredibly knowledgeable professors who are dedicated to music, the craft of music, the theory of music, and the technology behind music. With a wonderfully talented student body, Berklee is an inspirational, difficult, and rewarding place to attend college - especially if music is your passion.

Greek Life Question mark?
Clubs and Activities Berklee has a wide spectrum of clubs ranging from sports to video games.
Great for these types of students Music performers, composers, business men, therapists. Literally any type of music career exists.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Berklee is a very traditional school in the sense of being a hipster, so grab some thick rimmed glasses and a scarf.
Bang for the buck Berklee is a bit pricy, but with the right amount of work put into scholarships and making yourself valuable to the school, its all worth it.
What to do for fun Its Boston; I think you'll fine something.
Food and Dining Could be better, but the Berklee Caf is absolutely the most convenient thing ever.
Dorm Life So much fun, so, so, so, so much fun.
Academic Rigor Its a fun hard though... Its music!
Tips for prospective students Focus, focus focus; college is an atmosphere to be selfish and work on yourself. Don't let others determine YOUR possibilities.

Categories Comments Campus Safety It is in the middle of a city, so there is room for danger - however there are security guards in every building and IDs to open the doors.
Greek Life None.
Clubs and Activities There are lots of different clubs to enjoy! There is a slam poetry team, a songwriting club, and lots of different fitness clubs and a cappella groups.
Great for these types of students Hard-working, dedicated to music, and artistically inclined.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is no campus, however there is the Red Room which has intimate music performances by famous and local artists.
Bang for the buck It is absolutely the best contemporary music school out there - however the price is a little overwhelming and it does not offer much opportunities for scholarships.
What to do for fun There is music everywhere and it is in the city of Boston - what ISN'T there to do for fun! You can go explore the city with your friends. There is the Charles River just minutes away that you can walk to and sit on the docks. There is the reflecting pool and the Prudential Center for shopping. There are delicious restaurants everywhere!
Food and Dining The breakfast is good and most of the meals are healthy, but the food quality is just average.
Dorm Life I can't give much on this. I have never lived in the dorms. But I've visited, and they are decent for what they are.
Academic Rigor Not only are the music classes intense and inspirational, but so are the liberal arts. The options are limitless and wonderfully constructed.
Tips for prospective students Study hard! It is not impossible to get straight A's - I am doing it - but it requires lots of dedication and commitment! Don't party too much - it demotivates you. Stay healthy and get your sleep!
In three sentences It is an incredible school. It offers opportunities and majors that no other college in the world does. It has some of the world's best musicians and teachers as part of its staff and faculty.

Food and Dining The food is very applicable to all diets. There are many vegetarian and gluten free options. The menu often changes frequently and the desserts are either hit or miss. But the salad/fruit bar is always available and you can't go wrong with that. Plus the ice cream is from Hersey!
Dorm Life I was not in the dorms my first year, they ran out of dorm space, but I knew a lot of people who had mixed feelings about the dorms. They were happy to get away from caf food and to have more living space. The room sizes varied greatly. But they loved the many friendships that they made because they lived in the dorms.
Academic Rigor The work is not overwhelmingly difficult but it is quite tedious. The projects often come all at once with all of your classes and are a process to complete. Procrastinating is something to avoid throughout all of your classes, despite the course rigor.
