Being able to personally get to know one's instructor is huge. Each teacher has their own skill set and network of people they know and trust, and when they see and know a student has earned the privilege to be paired with their people in the industry, they are more than happy to do so. With the photography industry as saturated as it is, it is a very tight knit community that is all about who you know in order to get one's foot in the door.
