    Tips for prospective students

Always try to apply and register for Butte months before the semester you wish to enroll in. Many other county students will try to get the classes you want or require for your major. Its best to get your foot in the door to avoid being stuck on a waiting list.

Butte College is great for students who can't afford 4 year univerities. If you still want to transfer, they are able to help you get your general ed's out of the way. I highly recommend Butte for those who want more bang for their buck.

Lots of campus police, and there is a department dedicated to helping students who feel unsafe for various reasons.

Great for these types of students

Rural, outdoors-ey, dedicated, and driven students.

    Bang for the buck

Lots of financial aid available, there is even a scholarship office. I joke that you don't need financial aid because the cost of the college itself is so cheap: less than $1500 per semester.

    What to do for fun

Plenty of clubs, school activities, and college sports to check out. There is also a drama group that puts on productions every year. Get involved with as much as possible to meet new people and have the best college experience.

    Food and Dining

Unfortunately, the nearest city is 10 miles away, which leaves little choice for dining out. Butte's cafeteria does provide lots of variety and fresh food to choose from though, and there are two cafes on campus. Cost is average.

    Dorm Life

There are Butte dorms in Chico, located about 15 miles northwest of the college, with frequent buses going between the two. I cannot say anything about the dorms from experience.

    Academic Rigor

One of the main differences between high school and Butte is that Butte has Blackboard, an online site where teachers post all the homework assignments. If you check on blackboard often and are self motivated to learn and do the work, you will be fine. This applies to anywhere: do NOT procrastinate.

    Tips for prospective students

Register for classes as soon as possible. Butte is a community college, which means lower funding and less classes, and ultimately overflowing waitlists. However, if you get into a class on a waitlist, stick with it because people will quickly drop the class and you will soon have a spot.

    In three sentences

Butte is a great, low-cost stepping stone for those looking to transfer to a four year college. The college is 100% self-sustained, is located on a wildlife preserve, and has a wonderful atmosphere, helpful teachers, and a friendly student body.

Great for these types of students

Great for students who are going to college and don't know what they want from it just yet.

    Bang for the buck

Cheap school, loves to give out financial aide to anyone with a pulse. Not a great thing to experience as a tax payer, but for dedicated students it is the easiest way to get started. If you work hard it is possible to get a good education, but you only truly get out of it what you are willing to put in.

    Academic Rigor

In terms of academics the school seems to put more effort into appearing to have high scores than in offering classes of a comprable nature to more rigorous academic institutions. Often times classes that are have a high rate of failure are the fault of students being unwilling to dedicate the necessary time to their education, however classes seem to be taught easier every year in order to pass more students. Grades are not improving because students are working harder, they are improving because teachers are modifying their material to a less demanding level.

    Tips for prospective students

Excellent place to start out and take time to decide on a future path. Beware of impaction, can be very difficult to get into classes these days.

    In three sentences

Butte College is a great place place to start out and take the time to decide on a future educational and career path. It's recent weaknesses are that it is very overcrowded and resources are spread fairly thin at times. Also, in terms of academics the school seems to put more effort into appearing to have high scores than in offering classes of a comprable nature to more rigorous academic institutions.

    What to do for fun

There are a good number of clubs at Butte, but sometimes it's hard to participate in events because many of them happen during class times. If you really have a passion for something, there is probably a niche for it at Butte.

    Food and Dining

There is quite a large array of foods available in the student cafeteria, but a lot of it is unhealthy. There are all kinds of options for every diet though.

    Dorm Life

Butte College only has one unofficial dorm and I do not live there.

    Academic Rigor

I was very prepared academically for college and have not really had to work to keep up at Butte. Depending on how prepared a person is would affect their experience. Also, I have taken predominantly social science classes, I'm sure the sciences and mathematics are much more rigorous.

    Tips for prospective students

Meet with a transfer counselor right away if you're planning to transfer! It is extremely important. They know about programs and loopholes you many never discover without talking to them. At least one regular counselor appointment per semester will really help keep you on track and graduating on time.

    In three sentences

Butte is a place where you can gain a full AA Degree education to prepare you for a secondary university. I feel as though you get out of the college what you put into it. If you're looking to make connections, you will, but if you go into it with a bad attitude you always have a bad attitude.

    Food and Dining

There is a cafeteria. The food is good, but pricey. There are microwave ovens in the dining area, for those students bringing lunches from home.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is one of Buttes weaknesses. This is a rural campus, and most students either commute from outlying areas, or they commute from Chico. Campus rooming is in Chico, CA., a twenty minute commute by bus.

Great for these types of students

Butte College is great for students who are interested in recycling, and healthy foods, and clean energy. It is also the home to many talented art teachers who play a prominent role in the various gallery shows, fashion shows, and art displays held in the Art Building each semester.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The campus celebrates Diversity Days every year on campus, and it is really worth attending. Last semester, one of my teachers who is openly gay gave a speech about her struggles growing up and fighting discrimination and fear. Being taught by professors who are so open and down-to-earth and human is really special.

    Bang for the buck

Most students who attend Butte College transfer to Chico State University because the two institutions share a transfer agreement. The funny part is that a lot of the professors at Butte Community College also teach at Chico State University, so while attending Butte, students are receiving a State College education at a Community College price.

    What to do for fun

Fun activities at Butte College include the Spring Fashion Show, various theatrical productions in the Black Box Theater, gallery shows at the Coyote Gallery, and various fairs held by the Associated Students. One semester I got free popcorn and lemonade and a granola bar at one of the fairs!

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria at Butte College has a lot of variety to choose from, however the most popular choices seem to be the Coyote Grill (grilled cheese and fries anyone?) and the pizza stand, which is the cheapest hot food you can find on campus. I have seen vegan options popping up lately, which is great, but I do wish the healthiest foods were also the cheapest.

    Academic Rigor

There are some classes at Butte College that are very easy, and some that are too rigorous in comparison. The downside is that if a student happens to get a lot of easy classes, the odd difficult one will really catch them off-guard. My advice: figure this distinction out early and divide your studying accordingly.

    Tips for prospective students

As difficult as it is, meet with a counselor, get on the right academic path for you, and drink plenty of coffee (by the way, the Road-Runner Café on campus offers stamp cards, but for some reason they don't tell anyone about it, so ask!).

Butte College has a beautiful campus, modern, up-to-date classrooms, and staff that mostly also work part-time at the local State University. Butte has one of the largest bus fleets in the state, which means that no one has to drive if they can't afford it (or if they just don't want to risk a speeding ticket on Hwy 99). My only criticism is the ridiculous goose-chase a student has to go through to get a counseling appointment.

Great for these types of students

Butte is great for people who aren't quite sure of what they want to be yet or people who are returning to school to better their lives.

    Bang for the buck

Butte is a California Community College, so if you qualify for the BOG Fee Waiver, tuition is free. The books are a little expensive though.

    What to do for fun

There is a very large grassy central area on the main campus that can be used for anything from lounging around and enjoying the sunshine to playing frisbee.

    Food and Dining

Butte College has great food options. The main cafeteria has 5 stations: Sushi, Sandwich, Pizza, Salad, and a Grill. Just outside the main cafeteria there is a taco truck style mexican station and right around the corner there is a wonderful coffee shop. My only complaints are the prices and there are no meal plan options.

    Academic Rigor

The classes I've taken have been pretty homework intensive, but for good reasons. If I hadn't done all the homework, there is no way I could pass the tests.

    Tips for prospective students

Do your research. Find out what you need to take and when, before you go to orientation.
