    Great for these types of students

    This school is great for anyone that wants to attend school in a large city setting. If you work also, or need time for other parts of your life, this is also a good school for you, as many Hunter students work and attend school part time. This school is great for anyone who wants to be in a diverse setting and meet many different types of people.
    Tips for prospective students

    Make sure, if you are in high school, that you do well on SAT's and keep your GPA up. Hunter is one of the harder CUNY schools to get into. Also if you are a NY state student, you should aim to do well on your Regents. For transfers, make sure your GPA is at or above a 3.0, just to be on the safe side. Also, get involved in extra-curricular activities and community service, it shows that you like to get involved. Lastly, if you want to avoid taking a language in college, make sure you take at least four years in high school. This will take some stress off your back when dealing with general education requirements, unless, of course, you want to take another language.
    Bang for the buck

    Hunter is a part of the City University of New York, which is dedicated to providing an inexpensive yet quality education for students. For instate students the tuition is around $4,600 and $13,000 for out of state, which is still less than many other public universities.
    Am enjoying being here

    I enjoy this school because it is in New York City. You have access to many different types of libraries, museums and other places of learning. It is also easy to get around, thanks to the MTA Subway. The school is also a very interesting place to be in because most of the classes are located in four buildings connected by bridges, and it's cool to look out and see the city from a bird's eye view. Also you will meet a number of very diverse people.
    Am learning a lot

    The professors here at Hunter are very knowledgeable and are also very diverse. Most of the professors that I have had so far are very fair and are also very helpful. Just make sure you read your syllabus before hand so that you are never behind, because once you are behind it's hard to catch up. There is a lot to learn at Hunter, including different cultures and ethnicities.

    Before I came to Hunter, I heard many stories such as CUNY students don't make as much friends as people who dorm. This is false. I made many friends here at Hunter. As long someone wants to be active and make friends, college, dorming or not dorming, will turn out fine for him/her.
    Am learning a lot

    Even though I've only been at Hunter College for a semester, I feel that that most of the professors making learning about a subject interesting. However, there are a few classes (the classes with 200+ people) that makes the student feel disconnected from the professor. I think those classes are introduction to ___ classes, so after getting through those classes, it should be fine.

    Hunter is good for all types of students. You can find everything you are looking for at Hunter. We're artsy, educational, outgoing and friendly.
    Tips for prospective students

    Students who are applying, do not get scared! We don't bite at Hunter college. It's probably one of the least overwhelming experiences. Hunter is welcoming of all types of kids. Just make sure you are focused on your studies and ready to have the best fours years of your life!

    Hunter most certainly gives the most for the money that is spent. The education is outstanding for a city price and big university kid should be jealous because we get to be in Manhattan, pay a reasonable price and get an exceptional education!

    Hunter is loads of fun! You walk down the hall and every day there is a different student DJing and playing music. It's a terrific way to dance and relieve stress between classes. There's also tons of clubs going on everyday. Making friends is also a breeze at Hunter because there are so many kids it's hard to not find someone who is interest in similar things as you.
    Am learning a lot

    I have never absorbed so much information in my life. The professors are amazing at helping students retain information and to help them learn. Every day in class is a new experience and I find myself often saying,wow I've never heard that before. College is all about learning new and exciting things. Hunter's outstanding teachers make it their priority to make sure you come out of a class having learned!

    Great for these types of students

    It's a great school for Sociology majors, and other people planning on venturing into the social sciences and mathematics, but as for the physical sciences I don't recommend Hunter College. You should also check out some of the other colleges under the City University of New York, there has to be at least one that fits your academic goals. If you want to attend a college in The Big Apple without slaughtering your piggy bank Hunter is the school for you!

    GET INVOLVED! I cannot begin to stress the importance of this, especially if your a college freshman. Hunter can be extremely boring if you simply travel to and from class. The more involved you are the less brutal the whole transition seems, and there are some pretty cool students at Hunter that are willing to help you along the way.

    The full time tuition is roughly $2,500 for instate students, and about $13,000 for out-of-state students. So its a really good value college for those who are residents of New York. Its offers an affordable alternative to many of the top private universities in NYC, like NYU and Columbia. Hunter College is definitely a great value!

    Hunter is a commuting school so its really hard to get involved in the school activities, but if you show the initiative to get involved it turns out that the school offers an extremely fun environment. The Undergraduate Student Government hosts several parties throughout the school year, but there is so much to do in New York City that many of the students don't attend. So even though there may not be much happening in school you will always find something to do in the vast city of New York.
    Am learning a lot

    Hunter primarily offers courses in the social sciences causes many of the courses to be repetitive and the curriculum to lack diversity. Although the course listings are very bland the staff is extremely qualified and knowledgeable. Personally I learned a lot in my first year at Hunter but that was also the product of extreme study hours.

    True academics that are interested in philosophy, pre-med, and biology would fit in well at Hunter. People who are looking for a fun, but challenging environment with lots of amazing resources and amenities would also love Hunter. Located in the heart of the Big Apple, I cannot think of any one who wouldn't love Hunter.
    Tips for prospective students

    Always speak to counselors whenever you can to ensure you are on the right path to reaching your educational goals. Get an email that is separate from your Hunter email. Make sure to go on hunter.cuny.edu frequently for scholarship info and news on upcoming events. Make sure to take advantage of the free gym service and free group fitness classes located in the basement of the 68th street campus. There is also an internship database that is great as well.

    Being born and raised in New York, tuition here is the lowest that I have seen for great education. There are free fitness classes and a free gym and pool as well as computer workshops. Like many other colleges there are huge lectures, which may suit many students' preferences. There are also small classes as well for students who value individualized attention. For those who are from out of town, dorms are extremely affordable with some nutrition and nursing classes in the same building as well as entertainment rooms. There are always tutoring sessions and writing workshops for those who do not have English as their native language. The curricula has a wide reach. From the arts and dance to science and mathematics, Hunter has courses that are intellectually stimulating and challenging as compared to any other top tier college. By holding high standards for their students, Hunter separates those who do not work for their grade from those who truly have learned. The breadth of knowledge offered at Hunter is priceless.

    At Hunter, the diversity of the student population is amazing. It opens your eyes to the variety of cultures. There are many international students attending Hunter and everyone is welcoming and very helpful. Clubs are always playing music outside the cafe area and there is always an area to lounge around in school during your breaks.
    Am learning a lot

    No matter what major you are considering, Hunter can accommodate you. From philosophy, to economics, to biology, there are always professors and instructors that honestly care about enriching your learning experience. The science courses and philosophy courses in my opinion are top notch for those who are truly the eternal academic.

    Liberal, open-minded, and ambitious students who want a great education without having to empty their wallets. Also for students who want to experience the city and take advantage of the myriad opportunities it has to offer.
    Tips for prospective students

    Don't underestimate a CUNY education! Regular admission to Hunter doesn't require essays--so do well on your SATs and keep up that GPA. After all, Hunter is one of the hardest CUNYs to get into, and as of late, undergraduate competition is fierce. For those who are applying to Macaulay Honors, you REALLY have to work hard! A high SAT score and GPA may carry you through admissions. But if you don't have those, you will need stellar extracurriculars, recommendations, and essays to even out your application. If Hunter is one of the more difficult CUNYs to get into in terms of regular admissions, imagine how difficult it is when applying for Macaulay Honors here! Work hard--the numbers matter here.

    Hunter is known for quality education at affordable prices. Because I commute, I have money left over and basically get paid to go to college. So no complaints here. Plus, the subway gets you everywhere (that is, if there aren't any more ridiculous fare hikes).

    I hail from New York City so naturally, as a senior in high school, I wanted to attend school somewhere where I can actually see the stars at night. I refused to acknowledge CUNYs as good schools. In lieu of a green campus, there is much to do in the city--something I used to take for granted. The students and professors here are also very diverse and intelligent, and even though I lived in NYC my entire life, it was still a little bit of a culture shock!
    Am learning a lot

    Absolutely. The professors here are extremely knowledgeable, open-minded and genuinely enjoy teaching. I learned a lot especially in discussion classes where I can open my mind to other points of view. I always find that the material being covered in one class can be related to material covered in others. For example, a Philosophy class helped me to gain further insight what was going on in my Psychology and English classes.

    I also want to say anyone, who is deciding to pursue nursing. Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing is the way to go. They really challlenge you and provide you with a great education. They make you determined to strive for greatness and they encourage you to be leaders in school and in the community. They really have helped me a lot. Also I do want to say that, dont be discourage when you hear that the nursing program is competitive. It is, but if you are self-determined, you work hard, and you have excelled with even a C in a class, you can still make it. :) Plus, there are so many tutors around to help and so many students, you will have more than enough resources. I have also heard that Hunter has a great education program if any students want to pursue teaching. My friend is becoming a teacher and she graduates a few months before me. She truly loves what field she chose and I am happy for her too. Also the english classes are phenomenal. There are so many courses you can take, with such a variety of cultures and diverse topics, you will never get tired of Hunter College.

    It can be scary, starting college. I want to tell you guys, that you will never be alone. If you choose hunter, they will set you up with a block system, where you can meet people who are interested in the same field as you. I know for me, this is where I met my current friends today. I am a senior now, and I still share the same struggles and joys with these people. They really help you out as so you will help them out too. Anyone who is accepted to Hunter College will enjoy their college experience. Also you have a chance to study abroad which is phenonmenal. I have not study abroad because nursing is such a stable and dedicated career that I had to stay here anad study most of the time, but I have friends who have went to Spain, other countries in Europe and has enjoyed their experience. It is about 6 weeks but it is worth it.

    Hunter is truly very affordable and they try to give so many scholarships out. I truly appreciate being at Hunter because not only is it affordable, but the education is phenomenal. The teachers really challenge you and give you a great education worth more than the money.

    The students are so warm and friendly here. I have met so many new people and I have so many new friends. Sometimes I get so excited going to class because of so many funny people I meet who make me laugh everytime I see them. You really can be yourself at Hunter and really find yourself and who you are as an individual. Hunter truly supports individualism but also altruism. Do something, because you want to do it, not to follow anyone else. I really believe in being a leader.
    Am learning a lot

    This school I believe by far is one of the best schools in the New York State. The academic courses are challenging but they really help you learn. I am currently in the nursing program and I have learned so much. I am truly prepared to go out into the world and i am ready to become a registered nurse. I have so much confidence and I thank Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing. I recommend any student, who wants to pursue nursing to apply to Hunter's Nursing Program. It is challenging but it will truly pay off in the end.

    Campus Safety

    You're pretty much safe in all aspects. The only way to get into the building is through swiping your card at a turnstile. There's security guards at each entrance.
    Greek Life

    I haven't heard much from anyone about greek life. I believe there are groups because in the bathrooms there's posters about them.
    Clubs and Activities

    There's always papers hung up about different clubs and events. There are a ton of clubs. The only one I joined is the radio station. I'm not really a club type of person, but my friends who are in clubs say it's terrific. For example the Filipino club competes in the traditional dances of their culture. It's a great way to meet new people.
    Great for these types of students

    Great college for any person wanting to enter the medical field. Also good for athletes. I'm neither of those though, I'm a film major student and in my opinion the school is good for any person who comes here wanting to be in whatever major they want to be in.
    Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

    There's welcoming events for freshmen during the first week of school. There's karaoke, t-shirts, remote control car races, free food and other things.
    Bang for the buck

    For the amount of money (which isn't a lot) you're paying to go to Hunter, you do get a lot out of it. The problem at hand though is the new increase in tuition but still the price is way better than all these other colleges where you'd pay like $30,000 and higher a year. Hunter is a lesser price with the same education offered. -You can't beat that deal.
    What to do for fun

    There's a nice hangout area on the roof of the East building and on the balcony on the 8th floor of the West Building. In front of the cafeteria there are a few seats and tables that people like to chill out in too. There's wi-fi so you could bring your laptop and surf the web in your free time. There's also sitting on the skywalks watching the traffic pass by below you. There's not many shops around but the main stores and attractions are just a stop of two away on the 6 train.
    Food and Dining

    The food is overpriced as with everything in New York City.The cafeteria is clean and big and there is a variety of food such as sushi, hamburgers, salads, wraps, sandwiches, yogurt, french fries, chicken strips, pizza, macaroni, etc.
    Dorm Life

    I can't really say anything about the dorm life because I'm a commuter, but some of my friends say it's not bad.
    Academic Rigor

    There are a lot of challenging courses. The minute you start to struggle you have top seek help either in tutoring or asking the professor. As long as you show your effort to seek help of a professor and improve, you'll do well on the midterms, finals and overall grade.
    Tips for prospective students

    SAT scores (which should be fairly average) are the most important factor in getting into this school. This school has a ton of smart students -students graduating in the top twenty ranking of their high schools- that you're up against.

    Overall it's not a bad college. With everywhere you go, including this college, you'll find the few bad professors and problems. Hunter offers an atmosphere of a variety of people, both challenging and not so challenging courses and professors who try to engage in whatever topic they're teaching about.

    Anyone who wants to learn a lot, wants to work hard, and can put sufficient time in for homework and studying should go to Hunter. If you're looking for a college that isn't too challenging or is easy to get through, don't go here. Many of the students here were in the top 10% of their class in high school.
    Tips for prospective students

    Make copies of any documents you give to financial aid. They tend to lose things and say they never got it. Call them, visit them, whatever you need to do to make sure your documents get processed. Go to office hours, ask for help, get a study group, etc. DO NOT think, I'll get it later on. No, you won't. This is college. It's challenging and it's very very easy to fall behind. Join a group, go to social events, say hi to someone you don't know. Don't be afraid to talk to people. You can't keep your mouth shut in here. Some people will come up to you and introduce themselves, but you shouldn't bet your money on being a wallflower.

    My tuition is being paid for by TAP and FAFSA so I can't say too much about the costs. I think the price is pretty good for the amount you can learn before getting a degree.

    The school is very diverse and I've gotten to know quite a bunch of people in the past four weeks. There will be times in which you'll have to be the first to speak to people before they say anything to you, so don't be timid about going up to someone you don't know. They might turn out to be a great friend later on.
    Am learning a lot

    There's a lot to learn at Hunter. The GER requirements make sure you'll leave as a well rounded student. The professors are very knowledgeable and the courses are challenging and thought-provoking. Make sure you take advantage of office hours so you can understand all the concepts. Don't wait (not for the shortest while) for when there's a bunch of things you don't understand. The professors and T.A.s enjoy helping students.

    The college itself seems like a fantastic deal. The only problem is that there is extremely limited student dorm space, and the cost of renting an apartment in NYC is very expensive, so I'm sure that will add a lot to my yearly expenses. That's one main thing holding me back from Hunter.

    i would say it is safe. it is located in one of the richest blocks in the city. lexington avenue so you will be fine. always tons of people.

    a lot of clubs almost every area of interest, and they got it. i would not know so much though i have not joined but i have friends who have.

    many food places around, a lot of smokers in school, many hipsters as well. always singing and playing tunes on the 3rd floor west building.

    hunter college is a huge campus with over thousands of students. it is easy to get lost here if you don't know your way around. with its dozens of different programs, it's almost impossible to pick a major and easily become lost. you will be exposed to so many different types of people and some great professors as well.

    On your first day of Orientation, they give you this thick packet that is color coded on the correct decorum for a emergency situation that is advised to be carried with you everyday, listing the appropriate reactions from flooding to even a suicide situation. At Hunter, they also have immense security to get into the buildings. You must have a Hunter OneCard or a Visitors Pass to even get past the lobby. Not to mention, the NYPD are patrolling the streets, making Lexington Avenue safe for all of its inhabitants.
    Clubs and Activities

    Basically, whatever you think of has a club here. And if Hunter doesn't have it, all you need is four people to make a club, and then the student center will give you a starter budget and recognition with the other clubs, sending you on your way to whatever you wish to do. In addition, intramural are held everyday, from basketball to yoga, so if you want to get into the competitive spirit or simply find zen, the deepest building in the city has the space for you.

    If you are a student that is dedicated to doing well in your field, wants to explore and experience different cultures, than you will do amazing here. This kind of college provides the experience to come in contact with different cultures and to exchange knowledge, as well as stepping out of your comfort zone everyday. (Especially on the subway or the LIRR.)
    Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

    Once you are registered as a student, they send you a graduation topper so that you can recognize yourself as a Hunter student at your own High School Graduation. In addition, the first week of classes, they hold a Freshmen week, that has a week full of giveaways, karaoke, a carnival and a game day that introduces all of the activities and clubs Hunter has to offer. Not to mention, the large amounts of free food they give you. Can't go wrong with that.
    Bang for the buck

    Hunter College was ranked #1 as the Best Value College by Princeton Review, is a Tier 1 school, and has professors that have ranked in the top three hundred in the entire nation. It is safe to say that they know what they are doing over there and have produced over four Fulbright scholars in the past Spring Semester. In addition, they have combined degrees with the CUNY Graduate Center, one of the best graduate schools in the nation. So, not only are you getting a great undergraduate education, but you may also earn a Masters while your at it.
    What to do for fun

    If you walk over two blocks, your in Central Park. You can play any sport you wish there, read a book on a bench or head back to the college and go for a swim in a Olympic size pool. Or, you could take the 68th street subway( located in the campus) and go see a Broadway show with some of the best actors the stage has ever seen. And if this doesn't peak your interest or your more of the scholarly type, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natual History are only a few subways away. The Metropolitan Museum of Art (or the MET) has an Egyptian temple placed in the middle of the Egyptian exhibit, a site you cannot see unless you travel to Giza. Now, it's only a few steps and a Metro card away.
    Food and Dining

    The food in the school is good, but why eat in the college when you can go down a flight of stairs and eat at an Italian restaurant on Lexington Avenue or take a subway to Bleecker street and have a taste of Amy's Bread. (One of the best cupcakes in the world!) Basically, any food you can think of is here for yours to take.
    Dorm Life

    Life at Hunter is different depending on where you stay. You can stay on 97th street, and the Brookdale campus, two entirely different places with entirely different atmospheres. But the people are great, and that is an understatement. In here, its a melting pot of cultural richness from all five boroughs and all over the world, with over 100 different countries represented. Here, you can relax, cook, study, hang out, and start your life with the tastes and textures of New York City at your fingertips. There's a reason why New York City is one of the best cities in the world, and that is why not dorming here would be a great mistake.
    Academic Rigor

    When it comes to college in general, your work load, your way of learning, and everything else stems from what professor you get. One professor can be laid back and give busy work with a lot of tests, giving you more than one opportunity to have a second chance. On the other hand, you may get a professor that gives four tests and one paper in the semester with only ten percent going to participation. The amount of input you do and how much you receive is entirely up to the choices you make, so it can never be blamed on the college or teacher. Now, it is all on you.
    Tips for prospective students

    This is for every school, not just Hunter, but if you truly want to know if you belong somewhere, even if its Harvard, you have to visit the school. You have to know if their programs fit you and provide you with your needs, but most importantly, you want to know that the next four years are going to be in a place where you can excel and where you can have fun. College can be about getting a degree, but it is more than that. It is the beginning of your life, so choose wisely.

    Not only is Hunter a place where inspiration can become one at any moment, it is a place that provides the tools needed to identify inspiration. With inspiration, Hunter gives an avenue for thought and inquiry through experience, such as through their study abroad opportunities that are not limited to Hunter, but to the entire CUNY and SUNY communities. And lastly, but most importantly, the education here is to be recognized as one of the best schools the world can offer, with professors who are regularly published in the New York Times and other journals that rank in the highest education degree for their fields and among other universities.

    Hunter has an array of programs and student activities to choose from. They also hold events for the entire student body to participate. If you do not want to join clubs, there are plenty of shows and activities you can attend to.

    The campus safety is up to par. The security gurads are strict like they should be and everyone needs an ID to enter the school. If you do not attend the school, then you have to enter the school through the Hunter West building only.

    The Greek life is almost nonexistent.

    There's not enough variety of clubs or exposure to the clubs at the school.

    This school is great for a student who is looking for a good academic challenge. Also this school is good for students who don't mind the commute.

    This school is in the CUNY system so for students who live within NYC, tuition is only about $2700. This is a steal compared to other colleges and especially when Hunter is one of the top public schools in the country. Theres quality in getting a degree from Hunter at that price.
    What to do for fun

    To create a more enjoyable experience at Hunter, either join a club or find a fraternity.

    The cafeteria here has a variety of food and the prices are reasonable. Closer to Thanksgiving, the school offers a mock Thanksgiving dinner. There's plenty of choices from pizza to burgers, ceasar salads to yogurt and fruits.

    This is more of a commuter school.

    This school is one of the tops schools in the CUNY system and the academics here are extremely competitive.

    hunter is not really a dangerous school, it is located on the upper west side where danger is barely present.

    there is basically no greek life, the frats/sororities here have the name, but since hunter doesn't allow them they are deemed as clubs. basically there is no initiation, and you join just to have the t shirt and some friends.

    the food at hunter is not really that good, and they dont really have a lot of options. there all from the same caterer and the foods include pizza/pasta, burrito/tacos,burgers/sandwhiches and some other snacks.

    at hunter, every class is a little harder than most cuny's. hunter is on a different level of academic performance so if you come here, make sure you are prepared.

    if you're looking for a normal college experience, this is not your school. but if you just want to get here and finish fast, this school is perfect.

    its a great school, not your average college experience though. if you com here for pre-med/nursing it is not a good idea because although hunter is reputable, it is so competitive that it is even hard to get classes let alone pass them. overall, its a good school, but not the best.

    There are many sororities and fraternities in Hunter and a few of them are co-ed. You will definitely know about them from their colorful fliers to their bake sales to raise money for various causes.

    There are a variety of clubs to meet people's interests and if you don't find a club in Hunter that you want you can always make one. Hunter' clubs range from Dumbledore's Army to Queer Student Union.

    Hunter is great for passionate and smart students because if there is an important cause there is definitely a demonstration or a group of Hunter kids trying to inform people. While some say Hunter is antisocial it always takes a little bit of effort to meet new people but it's definitely worth it.

    Besides hanging out with friends and telling jokes you can also join one of Hunter's many clubs like Dumbledore's Army if you're a Harry Potter geek. Central Park isn't that far and you can walk around and sight-see. There is always an event going on in Hunter so you'll never be bored.

    While the food is expensive it comes with the territory since it's in Manhattan. If you don't like the food in Hunter there are plenty of restaurants and fast food places. The area is diverse so one day you could have a quesadilla and the next day a California roll.

    There apppears to be a lack in regards to nutrition here at Hunter College. The choices in which we are provided on a daily bases are dull as they appear to serve the same chicken and fries combo everyday. The prices are very very unreasonable as well. Depsite the negative responses some of the positives that are given to the dining department includes the overall taste of the food. They haven't disappointing me yet with those curly fries.

    In regards to the academics here, the school is known for its excellent professors who have taught at some of the most prestigious Universities in the nation. Keep up with your school work as the classes will move at a alarmingly fast pace, easy for you to fall behind. Also be expected to not be able to find a class in which you would need pertaining to your major or graduation. Yeah Hunter has 22,000 students.

    Hunter is one of the most competitive schools within the CUNY system here in New York. The 22 percent acceptance rate here attributes to the popularity and difficulty that is presented. To better your chances here, stake up both your SAT score and your GPA. Alongside this, be warned as this is a commuter school. The sense of school spirit is lacking in all departments.

    The Thomas Hunter building is dedicated almost in its entirety to student clubs and organizations. These clubs also table - they make themselves known to the student body and offer fun and interesting events. It is relatively easy to find a group whose interests match yours.

    Students on a budget and who wish to avoid oppressive loans ought to consider Hunter, as well as other CUNY schools - especially in the fields of social work and nursing.     This school is a commuter school, and the dorms are not that close to the actual classes. Moreover, as a public institution, the school is crowded and over-populated; small class sizes are not so easy to come by, but neither are most classes overly large.

    Enjoy the city! Central park is a few avenues away so on a nice day the park is a great place to be. Hunter also has many clubs ranging from video games to a LGBTQ group where everyone is able to find a niche that makes them feel comfortable.

    Food in the Hunter cafeteria is goof but overpriced. Fortunately the city offers many food alternatives so there is no obligation to eat in the dining hall.

    I have not been in a Hunter dorm but have friends who dorm and they do not complain too much. It is spacious, clean, and safe.

    Tons of clubs throughout Thomas Hunter building, most are on the 3rd floor and there's always something going on. Asian Students In Action (A.S.I.A.) Club normally has a HUGE show towards the end of each semester.

    If you're going in undeclared there's no worries until around your sophomore year. Just relax, take your GER courses and maybe you'll get an idea for a major through those courses.

    Be prepared to take a lot of seemingly unwanted and unneeded classes to accomplish the general requirements, which happen to be quite a lot. I suggest you base your class decisions on the website ratemyprofessor to choose a professor that's best suited for your learning capacity. There are also many students that attend this college so make relationships meaningful, and actually make friends. It's really hard you only tend to see someone for a little over an hour in class. Also, the North building never has any service for cellphones.

Pretty inconvenient, if you ask me. All the rooms are singles, though.

    Because of the scholarship I received I was also given FREE housing paid for by the school at the 92Y on the Upper East Side. This came with a free gym membership and an amazing living space. Rooms are small but it's New York, they're small everywhere. Community is friendly and safe and a ten minute commute to Hunter.
    Academic Rigor

    So far my gen ed classes have been challenging but not overwhelming. It definitely depends on your major but if your an active member in the lectures and discussion it pays off.

    1. LOOK INTO SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES. Hunter has so many wonderful scholarships and I was the recipient of one of them and it changed my college future drastically. 2. Get involved! With a commuter school it's harder, but if you stick around, join some clubs and meet new people it opens so many doors. 3. Take new classes. This is the time to explore that area you never got a chance to in high school. If you're a biology major, take an art class! 4. Go on ratemyprofessor.com to see which professors are the best!

    Security guards are always standing at the entrances, requiring students and faculty to swipe or show their Hunter ID card to enter the building. They also circulate the building,so you can assure you'll be safe. The area around Hunter is also relatively safe. But, as in any city, you should look out for yourself, especially when it;s dark.

    There is some Greek Like if you're into it, but it's not a great scene at Hunter. Hazing and the negative aspects of Greek Life do not exist at Hunter. Fraternities and Sororities at Hunter mainly consist of nice, fun, and compassionate people.

    There are over 160 clubs, and if there isn't one that you're looking for, you can create it! Hunter has a lot of interesting clubs like the radio, newspaper, literary magazine, Dumbledore's Army (Harry potter club), Film and Theatre Connection, cultural and religious clubs, and many more! The Undergraduate Student Government (USG) also hosts many fun and free events for students such as concerts and dances.

    The Thomas Hunter building is part of the original college called the Normal School, which was an all girls school used to train girls to become teachers. The Gothic architecture of this newly renovated building adds a mysterious atmosphere to Hunter College. There are secret passages that will take a while for you to discover.

    Hunter doesn't have enough dorms to house all of its students, but there are other options! You can rent an apartment with roommates who also go to Hunter. The dorms are inexpensive and provide a real college experience.

    Don't be fooled because Hunter is a public school! Many of the professors also teach at Columbia and NYU. Most of them are distinguished in their fields and many have taught across the world and at prestigious universities such as Yale and Harvard.

    If you're a NY state resident, fill out your TAP as well as your FAFSA. Depending on your income you can go to Hunter for free and get money back (to use for books, rent, etc). Of course there are a few happy ones here and there just like anywhere but there is not much of a good social vibe going on at Hunter. Also, students are not traditional, at hunter the diversity is incredible. I am a freshman and in all of my classes, I have students that are 18 just like me sitting beside me but then again I also have some students that are older than 65. All ages will be seen at Hunter.
    What to do for fun

    Nothing really. Hang around the 3rd floor where there is always something going on (clubs advertising) but besides that I guess if you are on a sports team that is fun.
    Tips for prospective students

    All prospective students should really do their research before accepting CUNY Hunter as their choice. Although the tuition is extremely affordable, if you are looking for a traditional college experience with school spirirt and social events, attending CUNY is not the right choice. If you are living in the city, don't mind making a huge number of friends, are independent, plan on saving money, and know what your intended major is then Hunter might just be for you.

    CUNY Hunter offers classes that I cannot really complain much about. If you would like a real college campus with many social events then CUNY Hunter is certainly not for you.     We don't have a Campus, but we have Central Park just three blocks away which is a lot bigger than some campuses and very entertaining. There's plenty of parties or clubs to go to which you can find info about on flyers around school. There's also plenty of clubs you can join which are a lot of fun and you can make great friends. One of the old buildings in the school has floors where the classrooms were turned into club rooms with sofas and couches. So if you join a club you can spend your time there during your breaks.

    Cafeteria food is pretty bad not to mention expensive . Since the school is located in the city, if your looking for a good meal it'll cost you. You're better off packing your own lunch.

    The dorms are a few trains stops from the school. Their also pretty cheap. Located on downtown Manhattan.

    GER classes are fair and really open up your mind to new ideas. Many people don't like the required classes but they were very interesting. Every other major in this school is fair but Biology and Chemistry are by far the most challenging.

    If you want to get into the school, make sure you do your best on your SAT's. Try and apply for a major with a lot of seats available because it will mean more competition for you if you are applying for a program with a few seats. A friend of mine had better grades than me but didn't get into Hunter because she applied with a nursing major and I applied for a Bio major. Before ending high school make sure you take four years of a language because even if you took three years your language credit will not go through and you will have to take a language again in College. If you are not a bio or chem major your time at Hunter will be enjoyable for the most part. Try and find classes that can fulfill more than one GER to get those classes out of the way quicker so you can focus on your major. There's plenty of clubs you can join to make friends. If you are having trouble in classes seek for advisers and free tutors. Your paying for your education, so you should take advantage of all the help the school is providing so you can get a good grade.

    Hunter College provides a strong education at a public school price. It is a commuter college so don't expect campus life to be any great. Food around here is expensive and the entire student body shares one microwave to heat up packed lunch.

    I end school at 10 pm and I consider it pretty safe, there is always a security guard on the first floor and plenty of helpful adults on all other floors.

    Since Manhattan is pretty much the campus for Hunter College, there are tons of inexpensive places to eat.

    Vending machines on every floor of the West building although cafetria food can get a bit pricey, but Manhattan serves a great amount of affordable and delicious places to eat.

    I personally don't dorm, but really wish I could. My friends tell me they have a blast dorming- the college experience they always dreamed of/

    If you take notes and pay attention in class homework and test will be your friends.

    Greek Life

    I wouldn't recommend joining any of the frats or sororities. They hang out too much and you are better off studying and just joining a regular club after school.

    The clubs are awesome! they have a huge queer student union and an Islamic group along with two Asian related groups. The Japanese Media and Culture club is one of the best. Come join and it could mean the first time that you experienced a Japanese Tea ceremony.
    Great for these types of students

    Students who want to study psychology, nursing, or political science. or interested in attending a CUNY that also has the best Japanese department out of all the CUNY colleges.
    Bang for the buck

    The quality of education for the price you're paying is the best deal you can get.
    What to do for fun

    Hang out in the smoker's area outside.

    The food is horribly overpriced and the selection almost nonexistent.

    CUNY has there own non armed security force and the NYPD 19th precinct as well as the fire department are literally across the street.

    A very inexpensive state school with a fantastic reputation. Professors just want to teach in NYC and usually NYU and Columbia don't have open positions, this school attracts the best Professors and students.
    What to do for fun

    It's New York City, if you can think it you can find it.

    Almost cart type food.

    No dorm on campus.

    Very intense no nonsense, the students here are here to learn.
    Tips for prospective students

    You must be on top of your paper work and applicant deadlines. The system is run by disgruntled government type employees who do not care to help you. If you submit something ask for the confirmation. Veterans, this school is great for us a large BAH rating and a great Vet representative and support community.

    The professors are great and seem to thoroughly enjoy there work. The facilities are in a constant state of despair and the building itself is under major construction. Still the school has been standing since 1870 so a little mess here and there wont effect a student form enjoying their time.

    There are multiple clubs for pretty much everything you can think of. If a club you want does not exist, you can create one.
    Bang for the buck

    Since it is a CUNY, it is already cheaper than most other schools. In addition, there are financial aids and multiple scholarships available as well as programs to help pay you for college. With education as rigorous as higher status college, Hunter is definitely bang for the buck.
    What to do for fun

    It is located in the center of the city. As long as you have an unlimited Metro Card, you can go anywhere and still be back in time for class. If you don't have an unlimited Metro card, we have Central Park. A beautiful place to take a stroll to, when one is too stressed out.
    Food and Dining

    The only bad part. High price and bad taste. You are better off bringing your own food or buy it from outside the campus

    Academic Rigor

    I am a science major, so it is ridiculously difficult, just like most other majors here. If you are looking to go to Medicine school or research or nursing, Hunter is great for that.
    Tips for prospective students

    If you are planning on coming to Hunter, come with a plan on succeeding. Although it is a CUNY, it is as tough as many SUNY and private colleges, due to its rigorous science courses. But it offers many different form of help for struggling students so no need to worry as long as you are willing to put in the work.

    Although it appears as a small school, it has great diversity. With multiple major options, from science to literature, everyone can find what they want to study. In addition, the diversity allows students to gain hand on knowledge and expand cultural experience, while still living in New York City.

    What to do for fun

    Undergraduate student body hosts everal events a year, one being the Spring concert where a celebrity performs for the school In the past Nas, NERD, Talib Kweli and Sean Paul have performed. Central Park is also 4 blocks away.
    Food and Dining

    Food is rather pricey at Hunter College, so is the neighborhood surrounding it. I encourage students to bring food from home.
    Dorm Life

    As a current Resident Assistant at the Hunter College brookdale dormitory I can say that the staff really makes an effort in reaching out to all individuals. We plan several fun events with free food every month. It is very affordable compared to all other living arrangements in Manhattan. The down side is that the Internet can be very slow between the hours of 10- 2am, but they are working on fixing the problem.
    Academic Rigor

    For science related courses most students find is very rigorous. For non science related courses, students can breath a little more easily, however you still have to put in work.
    Tips for prospective students

    My strongest advice is for student to get involved with either a club, athletic team, honor society or frat/ sorority. This is the best way to make friends at a commuter school.

    Hunter College is noticibly rich in diversity. It is a commuter school however so it can be a little hard to make meaningful friendships if you are not social or are involved in a team or club. Over all I give Hunter a 9 out of 10 because even though the professors at the school are mostly wonderful, it could use some extra funding on experienced professional administrative staff.

    For a disorganized and overcrowded college, they do offer some great interesting humanities classes. Of course they will not help you day you graduate but they can make a semester fun.
    Tips for prospective students

    If you are going into majors such as psychology or sociology, Hunter is great. Hunter as well offers an entire major dedicated to Statistics. Just work hard and you may do fine, depending on the professor you have of course since there is no regulation in this school. Majority of professors are adjuncts so they are current students as well being exploited.

    Hunter College is a good liberal arts college. With my 3 years of experience so far it seems to be very disorganized however and there is a lack of communication. Professors seem do as they please and it seems to me that no one cares. It's okay to have a Biology class overcrowded in an auditorium where the class average is a 30 out of a 100. It seems okay to the professors and to the heads of the departments.

    Hunter like many other places is like a roller coaster, it has its ups and its down, anything from the extremely large classrooms to the accessibility of the subway. Attending Hunter made it possible to maintain my part time job, but proved to be extremely difficult when participating in extra circular activities, Honestly, Hunter is what you make out it, the class are a little challenging, but nothing a little studying won't solve.
