Categories Comments Campus Safety there hasn't been any dangerous incident at school. things around here are pretty safe and ordinary.
Greek Life greek life is no fairy tale. our sororities are the elite and high achievers, there are no kegs and sorority houses here.
Clubs and Activities this is a pretty mellow town, nothing big city, but we are around a cool beach atmosphere and very environmental.
Great for these types of students if you are the average small town california kid with a taste for the beach and outdoors, cabrillo is the school for you.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus no unusual traditions. most people keep to themselves this isn't a very large college, but there are bands that play on the quad every once in a while.
Bang for the buck if you're from around the area it's cheap. outside cali, the thing gets harder. almost all local cali students receive financial aid here that will cover more than enough for tuition.
What to do for fun sports here are awesome to go and watch. the are is close to the beach so there's a lot of time to be spent there. the towns around are calm and quiet so it's a serene place. we've had mls teams come and play at school like the l.a. galaxy with david beckham.
Food and Dining the cafeteria isn't big, but it does serve delicious foods. it pleases the average students, whether vegan or not.
Dorm Life there are no dorms on campus. this is a community college so most students are from around the area. most live either in santa cruz or watsonville.
Academic Rigor classes here are simple. teachers don't baby you, it's your responsibility to show up to class and be ready to learn. though it sounds harsh, teachers are understanding and very helpful when it comes up to academics.
Tips for prospective students the staff isn't just here to give you homework and teach you new ideas. take advantage of their knowledge and ask around. there are so many people here who can help you reach your educational goals.
In three sentences cabrillo is a massive school filled with an interesting, diverse group of students. there are three campuses, in aptos, watsonville, and scotts valley, but aptos is the main campus. no matter if you have an intended major or not, cabrillo college can help guide in you in the right direction with the help of fellow students and the incredible staff at the college center.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus feels really safe even at night. I have a night class that gets out at 10:20 and I feel comfortable walking to my car by myself. The campus is well lit and feels safe.
Clubs and Activities Lots of clubs involving volunteer work, video games, athletic, biking, and various other clubs!
Great for these types of students Creative, open minded, fun students looking for a unique school to go to for community college who want to further their education, get their degree or transfer to a four year! Who also want to live in a really cool area, and have lots of time outside of school to do what ever they want!
Bang for the buck Community college is unbelievably affordable. After looking at many out of state schools and private universities, I am so glad I chose to go to Cabrillo because I can get an excellent education and save so much money so I can transfer to a four year and not be in tons of debt.
What to do for fun It is in an awesome location where you can hit the beach, go hiking or biking, and go to interesting events in the city of Santa Cruz. There are many options to have fun, meet people, and get a part time job too!
Food and Dining There is on-campus dining, but I personally like packing my own lunches so I don't know how their on-campus food is.
Dorm Life There is no on campus housing. The only down-fall of this school is that you don't get to experience freshmen dorm life that many college students get to experience. However there are opportunities to rent close by the school and possible share rent with some pretty cool housemates.
Academic Rigor I am talking 13 units and I wish I was taking more. The classes aren't too easy, but I think they are just right where I could have easily taken another class. The classes are very interesting and the professors do a good job of making students interested in their class through interesting lectures, in class discussions, and informative examples. The professors at Cabrillo have stellar background and are really good at teaching their subject instead of just lecturing about it.
Tips for prospective students Plan on what classes you want to take early and meet with a counselor to plan your classes and learn what classes you need to transferring, getting your degree, or getting certified.
In three sentences Cabrillo is a great campus which offers a wide variety of classes in different subjects. It is in a wonderful location that is able to accommodate students in all of Santa Cruz county and is very close to the ocean. Excellent school is you want to transfer!!

Categories Comments Campus Safety Police everywhere. Two tickets in the first two weeks. Santa Cruz is a small town, everyone drives below 35 mph anywhere in the city besides the freeway (pch 1)
Clubs and Activities The clubs actually do stuff for the community here.
Great for these types of students Students who want to escape the city or suburbia.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Unlike Los Angeles, people don't care as much for appearance here. It is highly common seeing someone in their pajamas going to class.
Bang for the buck $46 a unit is little to nothing with any sort of financial aid
What to do for fun Buy a wetsuit and surfboard and learn how to surf on the weekends. Endless miles of coast to explore.
Food and Dining Santa Cruz has some of the best food I've had in a long time. My local taco bar ended up being the most authentic mexican food I've had in my entire life.
Dorm Life If you live locally great for you, if you are a student looking to rent a room for cheap, look on craigslist or other advertising websites. A car is highly suggested though.
Academic Rigor Teachers are very passionate about what they teach. Makes for the best of teachers you will enjoy having.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you are registered on schedule, if you are doing this as a last minute register, you still have much more opportunity than anywhere in LA. If you are on time for registration, you should be on your way to having 12 units at least.
In three sentences This is a fantastic school. Compared to any Community College in Socal , class availability is much more common here which means less time wasted in the Community College system. Beautiful, technologically sound school that even has a view of the beach from the campus.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I have not heard of any safety problems.
Clubs and Activities There are plenty of clubs and activities to get involved. Am looking forward to find the right club for me.
Great for these types of students Any one but especially students that like the beach, like to surf, like bipolar weather, and just a chill person. There are a lot of hippies since its in Santa Cruz.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Am not sure about traditions since this was my first semester attending.
Bang for the buck The offer good financial aid. There are programs that can help you pay for school. Tuition right know is like $46 per unit the highest it has ever been.
What to do for fun Next semester am planing to take a motorcycle classes that Cabrillo College offers.
Food and Dining I occasionally go to the cafeteria and get something to snake on between classes. Its a places were you can easily get in and get out if your in a hurry.
Dorm Life I dont know much about Dorm life.
Academic Rigor I haven't attend any other college but i consider this college to have the preparations for students that want to transfer somewhere else.
In three sentences Beautiful surrounding, people are very nice and welcoming. the campus is only 10 min away from the beach. The campus looks new and has amazing teaches.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Confused about what major to pursue, low on cash, don't want to be swimming in debt, and love to actually learn something from professors with qualified credentials.
Tips for prospective students Think about community college before you go on to Uni-- it'll save you thousands and you will get a richer experience from being able to be taught by an actual professor and not their student aids.
Bang for the buck I qualified for the BOG Waiver which paid for all my courses-- yay!
Did enjoy being here Very good alternative to university if you want to get the general ed taken care of. Plus, they have an agreement with UCSC so you are a shoe-in when you apply.
Did learn a lot All of my past professors had a PhD in their field and I was able to see what a quality community college could offer-- much better than any university because the classes are smaller and they are able to focus on you and help you succeed.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students For those wishing to better their education for cheap in a pleasant beach town, choose Cabrillo.
Tips for prospective students Register early and plan earlier for classes fill extremely quickly.
Bang for the buck At $36 a unit, I can even save for future college expenses.
Will enjoy being here I've been living in Aptos for a month and this sea air is invigorating! Our apartment rests a literal 5 minutes (biking, nonetheless) from Seacliff beach and about 10 minutes from the school. The campus, nestled hillside, overlooks the pristine Pacific. Their massive vapa complex promises scintillating journeys into the theatre arts.
Will learn a lot The course offerings, especially those for psychology and philosophy in my research, are extensive, but given the community college status, I am a bit wary of the general attitude towards learning vs. just being, but can neither confirm nor deny this suspicion yet.

Categories Comments What to do for fun there is a state beach only a few blocks from campus with amazing views as well as a nearby mall (roughly five miles away).
Food and Dining there's a shopping center down the street if you want food, but i wouldn't recommend the cafeteria. there are, however, a multitude of vending machines stocked with candy, soda, and water should you find yourself in need.
Dorm Life there aren't dorms, but there are many nearby apartments that would be suitable to share with a few friends.
Academic Rigor the work isn't difficult at all, but attend the lectures and do whatever assignments you are given and you should do well.
Tips for prospective students wear flat shoes; the campus is on a very steep hill. invest in a parking permit unless you enjoy walking across campus or if you're taking only art classes. the night classes have the best staff, and the campus quiets down after six p.m.
In three sentences this school is very clean. the teachers at cabrillo are very qualified. some of the staff even work at the nearby university, and many have doctorates.

Categories Comments What to do for fun it's a community college, i only go there for actual classes.
Food and Dining the food is fine. it's cafeteria food.
Academic Rigor the classes are geared toward a wide population of attendance. it makes them very general. this is best for general ed so you can transfer.
Tips for prospective students it is important that you follow directions and begin to plan your course of action. the college is a bureaucracy so in the end you are responsible for what happens to you and where you end up.
In three sentences cabrillo is a very good community college, with a varied student body and a lot of offered courses. it has some nice facilities and for how much their funding has been cut, they make pretty well do with what they have. it is a much cheaper way to get started on your education.

Categories Comments What to do for fun there are a lot of sports to go watch during their season. also the theater shows are quit nice. plus, if it is a nice day, the beach isn't too far away.
Food and Dining must receive another neutral because i do not really eat at school. i pack a lunch from home, or will go out to eat. however, the vending machines are nice.
Dorm Life i have to give this a neutral because i don't dorm from cabrillo. i am still living from home right now so i do not know what the dorm life is like. sorry.
Academic Rigor tough but very educational
Tips for prospective students meet with a counselor and they will start you on the right track. always ask the teachers for help, every teacher i've had has always had good office hours. they will work with you.
In three sentences i would rate this college as super acceptable. if you are willing to put in the work, they have the programs that can help you transfer out. i would recommend going to cabrillo before transferring.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is a sheriff station on the lower campus across the street. Can get a little spooky at night in the parking garage, so walk with a buddy if you can at night
Greek Life there is a scholarship foundation known as Alpha Gamma Sigma, but no Fraternities or Sororities.
Great for these types of students -Anyone that works -Anyone with a not so flexible schedule -Anyone looking to save money and still get a great education
Bang for the buck For around $1000 a semester for classes, books, and supplies this is a great way to get general education credits done, get an Associates degree or get a certificate because the school is still great, but it doesn't have a university price tag.
What to do for fun There are lots of clubs on campus and there are even vendors on campus that bring their merchandise for sale which you can buy between classes. You can take a Kinesiology (formerly PE) class if you want to play a sport, but don't want to play on a team.
Food and Dining Some pretty good choices. There are lots of coffee drinks and sandwiches, but the main cafeteria seems to always have the same or similar choices, which some people like and some people don't.
Dorm Life No dorms here. No one lives on campus, but everyone lives pretty close to campus.
Academic Rigor Great school with great classes. Classes are not super hard, but they challenge you and they make you do the work. Make sure to show up to class because the lectures are important for the tests.
Tips for prospective students Take a full time load of classes if you can. Because of budget cuts, classes are filling fast and sections are being cancelled. Take everything that you need to take to graduate or transfer while you can, because no one is really sure what is going to get cut.
In three sentences It is a great school with great teachers and great students. The class sizes are not too big for many of the classes and the teachers are available or make availability for you to learn and understand the material.

Categories Comments What to do for fun At the campus, there are always activities and sometimes music or little stands where you can buy posters or stuff like that. Just little interesting things that you can look at and buy.
Food and Dining Food and dining is pretty ok, cant complain.
Dorm Life There are no dorms there.
Academic Rigor Teachers are very helpful and will work with you for as much time as you need.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you go to any tutoring sessions that are being offered. The ILC in the Watsonville Campus and the MLC and Writing center are great places to get any type of help you need.
In three sentences It is a great school and everybody is really friendly and helpful. Teachers are also very available after classes if you, in case, need help. Everything is always very mellow and under control. Great school!

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus is only safe to your ability to be safe. The campus is well lit, there is an actual sheriff department on campus as well as a couple security guards.
Greek Life I do not believe there is much of a greek life on campus.
Clubs and Activities There are quite a few clubs on campus, with interests in biking, recycling, student gov, social science: archeology clubs, anthropology clubs and many more!
Great for these types of students Students who love the ocean, sports, friendly down to earth people, yet folks who also care alot about their education!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Cabrillo is very much the green school. There is a communal effort to be environmentally friendly. Recycling is a MUST!
Bang for the buck Although the price per unit is going up to $46 a unit next semester, Cabrillo is still one hell of a steal! My books are often more expensive than my tuition!
What to do for fun Skimboarding, Jamming, Surfing, Cycling, Frisbee, Golf, Hiking, anything and everything in between!
Food and Dining I do not know much about the food and dining situation on campus, although the campus coffee shops looks and smells great! In such proximity to Santa Cruz and Capitola, food is definitely not an issue.
Dorm Life Since Cabrillo is a Community College, there are no dorms on campus. Yet, there are many very nice apartments surrounding the school!
Academic Rigor Overall, Cabrillo has a very nice feel socially and academically. The students do not compete with one another nearly as much as in High School. Although, the teachers expect you to hold your weight. Most of them will often confront students who are struggling and offer to help either by means of office hours or tutoring in the writing center/ library.
Tips for prospective students When applying for classes, apply as early as possible. Classes fill up VERY fast, and its never fun to have to wait list and sign up later into the semester.
In three sentences Overall, Cabrillo is awesome! The professors are all incredibly helpful and knowledgable. As a Music Major, I find Cabrillo's music department far beyond the community college level! The whole campus has a great feel!

Categories Comments Campus Safety Very safe. There are very few thefts and no violent crime.
Great for these types of students Students that have a goal and want to get the most out of their attendance to the school.
Bang for the buck Very moderately priced classes that can be exceptionally useful and interesting.
What to do for fun Cabrillo isn't too far from the Santa Cruz Boardwalk and Downtown area which boasts many nightlife and tourist-y type attractions and events.
Food and Dining The food is prepared by the students enrolled in the culinary school with help from their instructors. It's cheap and surprisingly tasty. There are also quite a few good eateries within a few blocks of the school.
Dorm Life There is a fraternity house, but I'm not really aware of the requirements of it.
Academic Rigor Teachers like Michael Mangin and Letitia Scott-Curtis demand a lot in the Honors department, but they're both excellent teachers. Like above, there are many good teachers, you just have to seek them out.
Tips for prospective students You can get whatever experience out of Cabrillo that you want; you just have to seek out whatever that might be.
In three sentences Fantastic and passionate teachers are around if you take the time to look for them. Cabrillo can be whatever you make of it, good or bad. Very professional administrative staff.

Categories Comments Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The lower campus has the great places to lay out on the grass and also is where our computer center is.
Bang for the buck You get a great education for very little money at Cabrillo. The best way to get great teachers is ask around, and go to ratemyproffesor.com to check out other people rating.
What to do for fun Go to the Welcome Week at the beginning of every semester to check out the clubs and such. The hope page online also have a calender of events around campus. Go to at least one sports event to see if it's your thing.
Food and Dining The food can range from OK to good. There are three places around campus that you can get food. They are mostly open at different times. The vending machines also have variety.
Dorm Life Cabrillo has teamed up with University of Santa Cruz to give students a housing opportunity. It is located downtown near the metro station. They are nice room, space is very limited though, so if you want to stay there go thought the process early.
Academic Rigor The teachers always push you enough to want to do good.
Tips for prospective students Register as early as possible. The parking is killer during the first 2 weeks of every semester so arrive around an hour before you classes those days. Also the parking monitors don't start looking for parking permits until the 2nd week of school.
In three sentences Cabrillo is a great place for taking the beginner classes for your major, or just getting those GEs out of the way. Most of the teachers are great.

Categories Comments What to do for fun its a two year college so not a lot to do on campus, but Santa Cruz, the city Cabrillo is in is very beautiful and there are a lot of outdoor activities.
Food and Dining the food is crappy, it feels like a really bad high school cafeteria.
Dorm Life they don't have any dooms, all living is off campus
Academic Rigor if you want Cabrillo can be very rigorous, but there are also classes that aren't very rigorous.
Tips for prospective students get your classes on time because they fill up, so make sure all your bills are paid
In three sentences Cabrillo College is a good school, there are academic classes that are challenging and get you prepared for transferring to a four year college. they have a great arts program that allows students even who don't want to be an arts major to join in. Over all i would recommend Cabrillo.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is a Sheriff's station located on the main campus. I've had to call them a couple times and they arrived in only a few minutes. Also, when taking night classes, most of my teachers have offered to walk out with students to ensure that everyone gets to their cars safely. There are even phones in the parking garages which link directly to a security company which is staffed 24 hours a day (I know because I worked there!).
Clubs and Activities There are several clubs on campus and they are quite active. I regularly see posters up for film screenings, or dinner events. Additionally, there's a club in charge of general events for the campus and they hold Halloween costume contests and a Thanksgiving dinner.
Great for these types of students There is such diversity on Cabrillo's campus that I think it's great for everyone! One important quality to have is kindness; I've found most of Cabrillo's students are extremely nice and willing to help others. It's something I love about attending this college!
Bang for the buck One of the best ways to save money when attending college is to take lower division classes at a community college and Cabrillo's teacher are up for the challenge. The math, philosophy, and science classes (which I have the most experience with) are first-rate and will definitely prepare students for transfer.
What to do for fun The Santa Cruz Area is full of clubs, bands, restaurants, and events. There's an active FreeSkool which holds fun classes. The ocean is visible from higher parts of Cabrillo's campus; learn to surf!
Food and Dining The cafeteria on campus has variety and fresh produce. If you have a special diet, there are made-to-order burritos which can fit your needs. Bring your own tea or instant coffee and a mug, because hot water is always free.
Academic Rigor Expect high-level classes to be hard, of course, and utilize Cabrillo's wonderful support structure. There is a Math Lab, a Physics Lab, a Writing Center, a general math/science/engineering center, plus many other places to get help from knowledgeable teachers and tutors, all for free!
Tips for prospective students Though most of the teachers here are great, there are one or two which should be avoided like the plague! Ask other students about the instructors before registering, and read RateMyProfessors!
In three sentences Cabrillo's staff is top-notch, the campus is lovely, and the location is great!

Categories Comments Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The gardens and horticulture department at the very top of campus are amazing. Worth checking out or taking classes if it interests you. Also there are some really great, very secret hiking spots near there. But Id prefer to keep it a secret....good luck finding them!!
What to do for fun Surfing at 38th, Dancing in downtown Santa Cruz, House shows in Santa Cruz. There is a lot do if you are able to get a few towns over.
Food and Dining Pretty awful. The Cafeteria is overpriced and unhealthy, not to mention pretty tiny. There are a couple of coffee stands that have the same overpriced/unhealthy food. On top of that there is nearly nowhere to walk to get food nearby.
Dorm Life Doesn't Exist!
Academic Rigor For a junior college they are definitely a little more challenging (I've been to a few). But really in the end it all depends on the teacher. I have had really hard classes and ridiculously easy classes.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I have always felt very comfortable on campus, even at night in the parking garage by myself.
Clubs and Activities They have everything under the sun, and if you do not find it, you can make it.
Great for these types of students Outgoing, passionate, expressive, opinionated, creative, strange, weird.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Fridays are food bank drive. Saturdays are farmer's market on campus and alanon meetings. This campus has support groups for literally everything.
Bang for the buck It is pretty expensive, luckily the BOG is available and Fafsa is pushed extremely hard, there are several other financial aid programs as well. This college has made an outstanding reputation for future employers as well.
What to do for fun Study groups, hiking, surfing, biking, karaoke, and enjoying nature.
Food and Dining The area is wonderful for any kind of food. Los Gordos has the best tacos in Santa Cruz county.
Dorm Life There are no dorms on campus, however the residency around the area is beautiful, though it's not very affordable unless you have a roommate.
Academic Rigor These classes are challenging and engaging. The teachers are dedicated and confident in their students.
Tips for prospective students Medical assisting cohort is really supportive. Push yourself to do the best you can.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are always sheriffs patrolling the campus. The campus isn't very big, but it still keeps sheriffs on duty. It is very well lit, so nobody has trouble finding their cars or their classes at night.
Great for these types of students Cabrillo is great for students who want to attend a University, but cannot afford it or didn't get accepted to the college of their choice. It is a great transfer college and will save you two years worth of expensive tuition.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is a spot on campus that was designed by students focusing on the arts, where there are interesting statues and paintings- almost Native American style art.
What to do for fun Personally, I hang out mostly in the music department, so I usually find other musicians to play with. It's fun meeting new people and discovering that they have similar goals to yours.
Food and Dining The cafeteria food is pretty good and there is also a student store where you can buy all sorts of snacks and supplies for your classes.
Dorm Life There are no dorms here because it is a junior college. However, the students are all very respectful and accepting of one another.
Academic Rigor The courses at Cabrillo are transferable to a University, so they are quite rigorous. Students need to constantly study for pop quizzes and need to make sure they manage their time wisely because they need plenty of time to finish their assignments.
Tips for prospective students Prospective students should develop great study habits so that they are self-disciplined when it comes to taking a midterm, final and remembering assignments. In college, teachers don't constantly remind you about your upcoming assignments or tests, so it is your responsibility to remember them when you receive the syllabus for the class at the beginning of each semester. Cabrillo, in particular, is trying to prepare you for the courses you will take once you transfer to a University, so teachers instruct the classes at that same level of difficulty.
In three sentences Cabrillo is filled with very knowledgeable teachers, especially in the music department. The music teachers are all very well trained and have attended many different Universities, earning a bachelor's degree or higher in musical studies. Since Cabrillo is a junior college, teachers are helping to prepare their students for college transfers by instructing courses at the level of University courses.

Academic Rigor At this school, all of the professors have high levels of experience and education, so it only makes sense that they want their students to be just as successful. Thus, the classes will test many of your skills. There of course are exceptions to this as many classes offered revolve around hands-on experience, so any academic work for said classes must be done on your own time.
Tips for prospective students To be successful at this community college, you will want to make sure to find your classrooms before the school year starts, always allow extra time to walk to class, and build a strong academic relationship with all of your professors so they can help you achieve your goals.
In three sentences As a part time student, I find Cabrillo to be a very accessible and professional school. It has a lot to offer both its students as well as the community as far as education and activities. It is one of the most accredited community colleges in California.
