    Visit the campus beforehand and try to learn a lot about your major. You want to make a good decision on major before you come because it is hard to change and costly.

    Make sure this is something you really want to do and are interested in. We are a quasi military school so we do wear uniforms and we do have 07:30 am mandatory formations in the quad every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

    Don't think that just because it's a maritime academy, that you have to go to sea. I have talked to alumni who have worked for companies such as GE, Chevron and many other huge industries. Many of these alumni were also engineering students so these options are available to everyone.

    Research the maritime industry thoroughly before you apply. The school has a very high attrition rate and a very low morale on campus. If you are there for anything besides breaking into a Maritime field, you are in for a very tough time. However those that are committed to life on the seas have very good opportunities upon graduation, and the California Maritime Academy has good reputation and a niche in the maritime market. You should also think twice you suffer from motion sickness, are colorblind, or have any other medical or sensory condition that requires frequent treatment or special equipment, as you will need to pass licensing exam in addition to graduating.
