Great for these types of students

Nursing students, Business majors, Education (teachers etc.) This school is very competitive for the above majors. Should you be in able to decide between another school and Cal State San Marcos, I would choose CSU San Marcos in a heartbeat, no questions asked.

    Tips for prospective students

To all those students who can't decide to move out or not, Cal State San Marcos is a great school to consider for this reason. It's close enough that should you decide to live at home, it's only about a 15 minute drive from Carlsbad (where I live) to school and if you do decide to move out, all of the housing in San Marcos is extremely close to the school in a great area, too.

    Bang for the buck

Overall, Cal State San Marcos offers something I feel no other state school offers in California- Private education for State fees. You are getting the education that kids who attend private schools pay for without having to take out massive student loans and be in debt for the next 80 years. The education here truly is superb.

    Am enjoying being here

I'm a commuter, which means I go back and forth from home to school everyday. For me, this school is working out great. It's close to home, I feel safe on campus and I hear the living environment is great in San Marcos, should you choose to live near or on campus. It's a clean, fun, college campus where you can either branch out and meet other great students or just attend for the learning aspect. I would consider this one of the nicest college campuses I've been on.

    Am learning a lot

I have attended Cal State San Marcos since Fall of last year. The greatest thing, in regards to the learning environment at Cal State San Marcos, is that students get to feel like a student and not just another number. The classes are rather small- medium size, about high school size, depending on where you went to high school, which allows students, should they choose, to develop great relationships with their professors. I got to personally know each one of the the professors I've had thus far and it's been such a great experience. They have taught me so much more and I'm getting 10x more out of it then I got from high school.

Great for these types of students

I think CSUSM is great for students that care about their education. The school is great for students who don't want to be a number in a four hundred student class. This school is great for students who like nature, great view and a relax environment.

    Tips for prospective students

Some tips I would give to prospective students are; come ready to school, have your material, be awake, be aware that it has a lot of stairs so get some comfortable shoes for your first day of class, while you get use to the work out.

    Am enjoying being here

School enviroment is fenomenal! The student body has concerts, free food and even stands on the first weeks to help people with any questions. There is alot of room to study, the 4 floor library has plenty of space to individual or group study seasions. The library also has the math lab and the writting center where students get the chance to get one-on-one help at the moment.

    Am learning a lot

This is my second year at CSUSM and I'm love with my school. Ever since the orientation day the staff and student organization made me feel welcome. They showed me the school, the library, the cafeteria, the bookstore, the labs and the buildings around the school, good enough to not get lost on the first day or week. Professor are amazing! They know what they are doing and since is a small school with small classes we get to know really well the instructor and the other way around.

Great for these types of students

I would say that you are a outgoing person then this college is great for you because it is very impacted meaning that it holds a lot more students than it should, but that's what makes the college experience fun, meeting new people. In Addition, i know for a fact that Cal State San Marcos specializes in Nursing, Business, and Education (becoming a teacher) ;therefore, you may find these majors impacted and hard to get into. Overall, if you are hard working, and dedicated to what you want to become then this school is for you. :D

    Tips for prospective students

If you are an incoming student i suggest the following: TAKE AP/IB CLASSES! They are worth it in the long run, you can get credit for college courses if you pass you AP tests with a 3 or better and your IB tests with a 4 or better. In addition, in the math section of the SAT aim for a 550 which would exclude you from taking any lower level math class that wont count towards your major or General Ed requirements. If you decide to take the ACT aim for a 23 OR higher on the math section for the same reason, and you wont have to take any math placement test. In addition, aim for a 550 or above in the SAT reading/writing portion of the test this will exempt you from the English placement exam and guarantee you entrance to a college level English class. Also, make sure you have the immunizations you need before coming to the university because if you do not the school wont let you apply for spring semester classes until you do. The immunization you need are: Hepatitis B, and Rubella shots. I would also recommend if you are a high school student planning on coming to the university to take some language courses in a community college. By language I'm referring to a language other than English like Italian, Spanish, or french. The school is very flexible with accepting language credit from community colleges and its cheaper to get these courses over with in community college. So, get a head now.

    Bang for the buck

The school definitely gives you your money's worth. Your tuition itself includes the use of The Clark which is the Gym of the school. The Clark, has treadmills, exercise classes, and even personal trainers. If your worried about not getting your classes on time then you should join the O-team where you become part of team that helps during orientation of incoming students, this also allows you to register to classes quicker then any one else. your tuition also includes health benefits, as student you are allowed to go down to the clinic across the street and health screenings, talk to a counselor about any problems that you may be encountering, or to get any assortment of shots that you could be missing. In addition, if your looking for a Job you can a get one in any of these places although it may not be easy it would be worth it.

    Am enjoying being here

I do like going here. They have a Starbucks! Which is nice because you will have those morning where you are totally exhausted, and you need a nice hot cup of coffee. The food is pretty decent. The Cafeteria offers a Pizza section, sushi, Chinese food, and Mexican food, and is you do not like any of that then you can bring your own microwavable food to the cafeteria where they have microwaves. in addition, they have a mini market where you can purchase chips, drinks, microwavable food, or anything else you might need for the day even energy drinks. It is a very diverse school with people of various racial backgrounds so your bound to meet some one interesting.

    Am learning a lot

California State University San Marcos is a great school with a lot of students. however, many of the classes remind me of being in High school because they are usually very small with about 30 to 40 students this in turn makes the transition from high school to university less scary. Having less students also makes it easier to communicate with the professor and studies show that its a lot easier to learn in a small class. In addition, the professors and staff are usually very helpful and educated in their subjects. The school also has a 5-floor library with many resources from famous literary pieces such as In the Time of The Butterflies by Julia Alvarez in the fourth floor to an array of computers in the second floor. The five-floor library also offers a Math Lab, and Language Learning center. the Math Lab is a place in the first floor a student can go to if they are having difficulty in math, here they will have plenty of tutors and some professors ready to assist you. The Language Learning center is also located in the first floor and here a student can submit and essay for revision and advice on what he/she can write next. They also offer tutoring in the English language and literature. So, there is plenty of help if a student needs help in these areas;furthermore, if a student needs help in another subject then he/she can go visit the professor during their office hours and they are always willing to help.

Great for these types of students

    1. students who can't afford a private university 2. students who want to save money 3. students who live in San Diego county and want to commute 4. future teachers

    Tips for prospective students

    1. Try to be a paid note taker in a class if you can because then you get priority registration 2. Take the computer skills requirement tests your first semester so you don't get a hold on your account. 3. Rent don't buy your textbooks for the first year or two, chances are they aren't going to be books you'll want to keep

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is about $2,400 which is incredibly cheap for a university. Definitely get a good education for a good price

    Am enjoying being here

I am a commuter student so when I'm at school, I'm in class. I'm not involved in any clubs or anything because I commute to school then return home for work. So I can't really say anything about life on campus

    Am learning a lot

the quality of the education really depends on the professor. I've had some GREAT professors and some not so great professors. Overall though, most of the professors really care about you as a student and are willing to help you in any way

Great for these types of students

Great for students that want smaller classes and are looking for a smaller less shocking campus community.

    Tips for prospective students

I recommend getting involved with as many student organizations as possible and consider joining a sorority or fraternity because joining a sorority has been a great decision for me. Also if you are a freshman live in the dorms, its worth it and a great way to make new friends.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition keeps getting raised, but that is going on with all Cal Sate schools right now. But you do get a great education and a great learning and social atmosphere.

    Am enjoying being here

I am an active member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority on campus which makes going to school a lot more fun and keeps me very busy on the weekends. I live on campus so class is just a short distance away from me. Once you get past walking up the stairs being on campus is usually pretty fun. On Tuesdays and Thursdays there are always activities going on in the main plaza where different groups are giving out free stuff. The dorms are a great place to live if you are a freshman there is always tons of activities going on and it is a great way to meet new people. San Marcos is only about 30 minutes from San Diego and only 20 minutes from the closest beach. Overall its a great place to go to school in my opinion.

    Am learning a lot

I have been attending San Marcos since my freshman year Fall 2009. All of my classes have been very informative and interesting, and all of the professors take the time to get to know students. The classes are smaller but in my opinion that is a good thing because it gives the professors a chance to know the students which I think helps students learn. Professors usually are always available during their office hours if you need any extra help and the campus has several outlets for extra help in classes as well.

Great for these types of students

that you do not like big cities, you like small group settings, and that you like to get to know people. Mainly, that you like that one on one attention with our professors.

    Tips for prospective students

Keep trying, never give up! Stay focused and study study study. Know what you want and stick with it. You can do anything you put your mind to.

    Bang for the buck

The only thing is not being able to get the classes you need when registration time comes. I make sure I get priority by living in the UVA. Then you are guaranteed a spot in classes you need.

    Am enjoying being here

As a girl from a small town this was just perfect for me. I love the small campus so I don't get lost. I love living in the dorms becuase I get to be around other students and make memorable friends from not just all over California but International friends too. Just all the things you experience as a college student living away from home is exciting all the time. Never a dull moment at CSUSM!

    Am learning a lot

The teachers at CSUSM make sure you go deep in your learning. Their tests and exams help with making sure you do. A lot of teachers make learning fun by thier exercises they have the class do. They encourage study sessions and if you have have a question office hours is where you should go.

    What to do for fun

There are many activities on campus that you can be a part of, like sports and clubs.

    Food and Dining

The food is very expensive. Its cheaper to each out side of campus.

    Dorm Life

I dont live in the dorms, its to expensive. I live with my family.

    Academic Rigor

So far my classes have been hard but not impossible.

    Tips for prospective students

Learn how to drive a motorcycle! The parking permit for a motorcycle is less than 200.00

    In three sentences

I am very happy to be attending Cal State San Marcos, but was very upset on how much they charge for items a student need, for example a parking permit is about 650.00 for the year!

Great for these types of students

I hear its a good school for sciences.

    Tips for prospective students

If I had known, Id be prepared knowing exactly what I want to do in college, and have a plan already prepared, because the advisors do only a decent job, once you finally get ahold of them.

    Bang for the buck

Since it was my first college, I dont have much to compare to, but if I could, Id like to go back and get my $9,000 back and go to a different school costing half as much.

    Did enjoy being here

It definitely wasnt my first choice. Once I started classes, the advisors - and the rest of the faculty - were very difficult to get in touch with. The credit limit was pretty discouraging; and most teachers had weird and strict no make-up work regulations.

    Did learn a lot

The teachers did a great job in the lectures, making sure every one understood everything, and provided resources so we could study at home.

So far, the financial aid has been working out pretty well for me, and I am looking forward to applying to more scholarships.

    Am enjoying being here

I have enjoyed the atmosphere, and the library is one of my favorite places to be. Even with all the stairs, it is easy to get around, and the college admins and professors are positive in giving you a hand whenever necessary.

    Am learning a lot

I've just finished my first semester at CSUSM. I've enjoyed the past five months, and have learned more than I expected. I look forward to the future and what new experiences I'll have.

    Campus Safety

the university has police officers on campus at all times for the safety of the campus. the officers are very friendly and some event like to attend student events and participate in student activities.

    Greek Life

all of the greeks are welcoming and love to get the campus involved in their activities.

    Clubs and Activities

    always things to do!

Great for these types of students

any type of student i think would fit in here. everyone is so welcoming and friendly.

    Bang for the buck

tuition is around $3,000 a semester now but it is comparable to many other universities around and cheaper than others in california and san diego county. the campus recreation center has many discounted activities so i recommend going there for off campus activities as well!

    What to do for fun

there are so many things to do on campus, especially if you are involved in clubs. many of the clubs will have student activities. there is a campus rec. center that is always offering discounted trips. for instance this spring break i will be going to 3 different national parks for only $250. also they offered snowboarding for $45 the ride included. also, every tuesday and thursday is u-hour where many of the events take place. also, many club meeting occur during this time.

    Food and Dining

many campuses have large food courts but as of right now we have one option by the university. in the spring of 2013 the student union will be opening and that will have many food options. i believe subway and a few other fast food places will be in there. but even though we only have the big cat food court food right now the food is really good.

    Dorm Life

my first year i lived on campus. technically they are not dorms they are apartments. when i lived on campus i was living with 5 other girls and at times it was a little rough but in the end i really enjoyed the experience. i know they are making more apartment/dorms that should be opening in the fall of 2012.

    Academic Rigor

teachers are very nice and helpful. if a class is very hard teachers are understanding and will help you out as much as possible. they have office hours and are willing to explain topics in any way to help a student understand the topic and class.

    In three sentences

it is a small campus but very friendly and loving. in my 4 years here i have not had a bad teacher. plus every tuesday there is an activity going on the one of the plazas and there are many ways for students to get evolved.

    Campus Safety

Campus police does a great job of keep a secure and safe environment!

    Greek Life

Greek Life at CSUSM prides itself on being different than the Greek Life at most other schools. Our Greek system has 4 sororities and 4 fraternities, and is continuing to grow. Joining a sorority or fraternity is a great way to meet people that have the same principles of leadership, scholarship, brotherhood & sisterhood, as well as service.

    Clubs and Activities

GET INVOLVED! Often times, joining a club or organization is a great way to network and could potentially be a stepping stone to future employment. Because CSUSM is a commuter school, joining a club can spice up the boring routine of attending class and going straight home.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Every Tuesday and Thursdays from noon to 1:00 p.m. in front of Kellogg Library, there is University Hour (U-hour.) This gives students a break from school to socialize with their fellow peers. Often times there will be some sort of fair and occasionally free food is given out.

    Bang for the buck

Many people that go to CSUSM don't realize the amount of resources that are available to you when you pay for your tuition. Although tuition is increasing, it is one of the most affordable state school educations.

    What to do for fun

San Marcos is a great location for fun activities. There is the beach, downtown San Diego, and beautiful hiking trails are not too far away. There are also many great restaurants within the San Marcos area.

    Food and Dining

Like I said before, the dorms are apartment style, so you are required to purchase your own food. There is a designated place on campus called the Dome, which has decent food.

    Dorm Life

I never lived in the dorms, but I have many friends that did. The facility has very nice amenities but the dorms are incredibly over priced, but you do receive priority registration which is almost necessary with all the budget cuts. The setup of the dorms is apartment style and you live with 4-6 people.

    Academic Rigor

Many of the general ed. classes are not too difficult and just require the basics of doing your homework, and studying a decent amount. Your classes will become more rigorous as you take classes for your major.

    Tips for prospective students

When I was in my first year of college, people were constantly repeating the phrase, C's get degrees. It's true, a 2.0 GPA will get you a degree, but it will not get you into grad school, help you in receiving scholarships, or assist you in your endeavors for an internship or good job. Focus on your grades early! Also, get involved and enjoy your experience as a college student.

    In three sentences

Initially, California State University-San Marcos was not my first choice of colleges that I wanted to attend, but because my family lived close, I didn't really have a choice. My first year and a half of school was alright, but I really started to enjoy college once I started getting involved on campus. Now, I absolutely love it!

    Campus Safety

Safety is a number one priority at this school.

    Clubs and Activities

There are always fantastic clubs and activities and they are all driven to help students get on track for their careers after college.

Great for these types of students

    Hard working, determined

    What to do for fun

Join clubs within your major or interests to get involved and meet new people. Also there are several sports that you can get involved in as well.

    Dorm Life

I am not living in a dorm, but they are brand new very nice facilities

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared to work hard because they move fast and the work load is constant.

    In three sentences

CSUSM is a fantastic school! I am a transfer student and this is my first semester at this school, and I absolutely love it here. They have a wonderful campus, fantastic programs and great teachers.

    Campus Safety

Campus is real safe, very rare of anything happening on campus EVER!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The curriculum room is great! for studying or just hanging out!

    Bang for the buck

Not any different than any other CSU. Its still expensive but the education you get is quality and the resources available make it worth it.

    What to do for fun

There is U hour every week and there are also tons of fun field trips that the student org puts on every week for all students. Recently there was rock climbing everything included all day for $15. Recreational opportunities are also abundant and we get a gym that offers programs, classes, or just a place to be healthy.

    Food and Dining

Campus recently changed vendors and there is now a great selection of nutritious meals available, as well as lots of snacks and not so healthy meals for the fast food lovers. The cost is also great!

    Dorm Life

I have heard a lot of great things from peers.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are not easy and you have to do the work to get the grade, but learning is always first! As long as you do the work, ask questions, get help (if needed) then there is no reason to fail a class.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not take the elevators and you won't need the gym. Make sure to get involved and take advantage of all the resources the campus has to offer.

    In three sentences

Prof. are great and well educated, they are really committed to the students education. The campus, although a commuter campus, has a great community scene and has many opportunities to get involved and develop not only character but leaderships as well. There is always classes to choose from, even when sections are closed as long as you are on top of it, you can usually crash and get into the course.

    Campus Safety

there are emergency poles in every location of the campus. so the Campus Police are a push of a button away. Much care for the student safety is very noticeable and you never feel afraid, even at night!

    Clubs and Activities

club life is very abundant in CSUSM! clubs are always having events and always make being a cougar worthwhile!

    What to do for fun

There are always some activities going on on campus. whether it be a ball, improvisation play, or even gym activities! :)

    Food and Dining

there are many food options, sushi, burritos, pizza, and they even change the ethnic food every week! they also have a cougar mart, for the daily grocery shops and there is a Ralphs across the street from the campus.

    Dorm Life

The housing is very nice, with very close proximity to classrooms, the gym and cafeteria.

    Academic Rigor

As a freshman, I don't know that much, but based on the classes I am taking, they are very rewarding. you get out what you put in. There have been no easy A' classes. they all teach you something vital about your life and future. at the same time, they are not impossible to complete and succeed in.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't look down on the CSU just because it is a state school, CSUSM has so much to offer, if you only give it a chance. A smaller school than its competitors (UCSD) CSUSM really offers the best classroom setting. The students learn to be around each other and learn from one another and the teachers are ALWAYS there to assist,. they even know you by name! :)

    In three sentences

California State University is a very open, welcoming and relatively small school. The professors and the students become like a family to you while you experience college life. The campus is also very active in helping its students to do more than they are required, to reach out and be involved.

    What to do for fun

Join a sorority or fraternity. There is nothing else.

    Food and Dining

There are no dining services, there is a small food court on campus that is over priced and no where near the dorms.

    Dorm Life

They don't have dorms, they have apartments off campus and they are ridiculously expensive.

    Academic Rigor

Being a biology major, the rigor is a bit harder, but if you're taking any sort of comm or gen ed class, they are a joke.

    Tips for prospective students

If you like having school spirit, this is not the school for you. Unless you're going into the nursing program, none of the programs at this school are really top notch.

    In three sentences

Though this university is rather new, the campus is not pleasant, majority of the teachers aren't that great, and there is no school spirit with barely any sports teams and the fact that it's a commuter school. It is nearly impossible to get classes and because of that the average time it takes to graduate from here is 5-6 years. I personally, do not enjoy attending CSUSM.

Campus police and emergency blue poles around campus you are safe. There is also a great program where if its late at night you can call the college police and they have volunteer walkers that will come to you and walk you wherever needed!

    Greek Life

Though they don't have houses there are opportunities to go Greek.

    Clubs and Activities

There are some great clubs including ASI, Indian club, french club etc... We have Uhour on tuesday and thursday from 12-1 where they have some great activities happening and theres almost always free food!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is this circle compass like floor decoration that its said if you step on it you wont graduate in 4 years. Also when you're on our campus take a look at the clock you may find something amusing about it.

    Bang for the buck

For the price of a public school you get the education of a private school! Smaller classes meaning better professor student relationships.

    What to do for fun

Well you can jump on the sprinter in either direction: toward the beach in Oceanside or the shops in Escondido. From the Oceanside sprinter station at the end you can take the Amtrak almost anywhere. My roommate used it to get to LA and back.

    Food and Dining

Once they get the new University Student Union up and running it will be 10x better.

    Dorm Life

Up and coming the Quad is great when construction is done it will be super!

    Academic Rigor

Good professor with smaller classrooms! Office hours aren't crowded making it easier to meet up with your professor. We do have some very challenging classes which you need to be prepared for by taking notes, doing homework and consistently study.

    Tips for prospective students

I would say go for it in any major except nursing. Great professor and smaller classes leading to better grades. There are many stairs and it does earn its nickname CSU Stair Master, be prepared with walking shoes! Learn to be friendly with your professors, they truly are there to help you excel at whatever class you are in.

    In three sentences

Its a good smaller, mainly commuters school. Its nice for most majors except for nursing. Planning to major in anything else and you'll be fine. Nursing and Kinesiology are both impacted and you need to have the highest grades to make it in.

Great for these types of students

Older (40+) students looking to go back to school to obtain a degree who do not mind being among immature and spoiled younger college students who are fresh out of either high school or community college.

    Tips for prospective students

There are two types of campuses students look to attend - commuter campuses and college (life) campuses. This school is definitely a commuter campus so do not expect to see the students you go to class with outside of class, unless you make a point to meet up with them. If you do not care about the social aspect of college-go to CSUSM. If you do not care if there are a lot of older (40+) students in your classes-go to CSUSM.

    Bang for the buck

It's a 4 year college with some graduate degree programs for a lot less than other CSU and UC schools.

    Am enjoying being here

I enjoy it now that I am in my degree program. The lower division classes and the students within those classes made me despise going to CSUSM. The students can be immature, spoiled, lazy, and just plain stupid.

    Am learning a lot

For my general education classes I did not learn very much and was not challenged. However, in my degree program I am learning a lot and am challenged by my peers and teachers.

    Campus Safety

The campus is very safe to walk around day or night. There are a number of campus security buttons around campus and in the parking lot which will provide an escort to your car via the campus police. Also, the semester is not complete without a email warning of mountain lions being spotted near campus. :)

    Greek Life

They recruit every Fall and Spring.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a bunch of clubs ranging fro sororities and fraternities to sports teams and clubs based upon majors. We have a new track and nice gym. The only downside is San Marcos does not have a football team.

Great for these types of students

San Marcos is great for students who want to attend a smaller sized school with accessible professors. If you want the campus party life, this school is not for you as most of the students commute.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Cal State San Marcos is a relatively new campus, so there are not that many traditions. However students refer to it as Cal State University Stair Master, because there are so many steps.

    Bang for the buck

Parking permits are kind of expensive, but there is plenty of parking which is very close to campus. Tuition rates are going up and class sizes are increasing but the teachers care about what they are teaching and do their best to make the classroom atmosphere as enjoyable as possible.

    What to do for fun

Clark field house is a great place to work out. The library also has ample space to study or sleep between classes. There is a friendly atmosphere and ASI hosts events on Tuesdays and Thursdays which often provide free food.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria is a nice place to hand out and meet new people. The food is alright, i've only eaten it a few times cause its kind of expensive.

    Dorm Life

    Unknown. Mostly a commuter campus.

    Academic Rigor

Class sizes are small and most professors want to help you if you are having trouble.

    Tips for prospective students

Actually go to class and participate in what is going on. It makes it much more enjoyable and you'll learn more that way. Whatever your willing to put in, is what you're going to get back from the school.

    In three sentences

Cal State University San Marcos is an awesome school to attend. The classes are small enough that the teachers really get to know you as a student. The only downside is its mainly a commuter campus so it is difficult to find out about events going on on campus.

I feel very safe in campus. There are cameras located in various parts of the campus. There is the university police department which works 24/7. There is also a program provided by the woman center which helps you learn self-deference. Also the crime rate is really low.

    Greek Life

I'm not involved in it, however I've heard from my friends that it is really great.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs so there is a high chance that you would find one or more that interest you.

Great for these types of students

It is great for any who want a small classroom setting. It is good for you can receive individual help. If needed you can go to the Writing Center if having difficulty with a paper that you are working on. There is also the Math lab which is good in which tutors can hep you in any difficulty you may have in regards to a math course. There is no need to pay for these services for it is included in your tuition.

    What to do for fun

There are so many great activities that the university provides. There is always something going on each day. There are many programs provided by the gym which are great to keep on shape. There is always events in which students get to enjoy music, free food and of course spend time with friends.

    Food and Dining

The food in this university is good. They make the food when you order it. The pizza comes straight from the oven. The food isn't that healthy yet it is good enough for any hungry college student.

    Dorm Life

I lived in the dorms for 5 weeks during the summer, it was through the Summer Bridge program which is made by EOP. Life at the dorms was really great for me because it helped me bond with new people who are now currently my friends. There is usually some fun activity that the RA's are setting up for the residents. There is times when free food is provided in which many of the dorm residents go and mingle with each other. To me it is a positive experience as long as you don't lose your focus in your academic work.

    Academic Rigor

For this college there is a writing requirement for every class, regardless of any major you may take. It is challenging but this is good for it helps the students become better writers and pushes them to expand their critical thinking skills.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are confused in anything in regards to academic work, you should ask your professor as soon as you can. You should do this even if you think you will eventually understand because then further into the semester everything will become more difficult to comprehend and that's when you would make things very difficult on yourself. So don't try to do everything on your own unless you completely understand.

    In three sentences

This university has many events that are great for the students to spend time together and to meet new people. It is a very friendly campus, the faculty and the students are very nice. The school in general is very accepting in regards to individuals.

Great for these types of students

Commuters and people serious about getting a college degree. This isn't a college experience campus. People talk down about CSUSM because of that, but I've been to two other colleges, including college experience campuses and the quality of education is the same. You will be disappointed however if you're expecting this to be like SDSU or UCSD.

    Bang for the buck

If you're in-state, great tuition prices. If not, be prepared to pony up.

    What to do for fun

The beach in Carlsbad and Oceanside is fairly close if you have a car or want to take the sprinter. San Diego is a 25 minute drive south on the I-15. If you have a car the San Diego area has a lot to offer. If you're not mobile the San Marcos area is pretty limited but you could still get into some fun, even up there.

    Food and Dining

Normal campus food like every other college. I don't eat it.

    Dorm Life

Ca't comment on this, I'm a transfer and I live in San Diego, so I don't know about the dorms. I hear they're nice.

    Academic Rigor

Again, state school. All CSU schools are similar.

    Tips for prospective students

Hard to get into any CSU now with the budget cuts, especially for transfers like me. I basically got in because I'm still an out-of-state student for one semester and they know they can rake in some extra dollars from me. If you're looking to come from out of California then you'll have good chances here.

    In three sentences

It's a State School, you get the quality of education you get at any state school. If you're a rich white kid who just wants college frat life and parties, don't come here. This is a college populated mostly by people serious about getting a degree.

The police station is located right next door to the dorms and one can receive their help and any time and any where. They are extremely nice and are willing to help out when ever needed. For example, if an individual has a night class and does not feel safe walking to his or her car, all they need to do is call the police station and ask for an escort. The police officer will show up to their location and walk or drive them to their car or dorm.

    Greek Life

I am personally not involved in Greek life, but I do know we multiple sororities and fraternities on campus. The best part about them is that they are continuing to grow and bring new ones on campus.

    Clubs and Activities

There is a club for just about any thing and any one on campus. The school wants to make sure everyone can find a place to call home on campus, and if you don't find something that sparks an interest they make it easy to make your own club.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There are many corks and surprises all around CSUSM's campus. We have a haunted top floor in our library, a litter box (sand box) for Crash the cougar our mascot, and many other fun facts that students get to learn about on their first day at orientation.

    Bang for the buck

I personally believe that every dollar I'm spending will help pay for my future. Unfortunately, college is expensive, but that problem arises when students go to any college. I feel that CSUSM does a great job at making sure every dollar is worth spending.

    What to do for fun

There is always so kind of event taking place on campus or in the dorms for all CSUSM students. The gym offers excursions throughout the year and of course there is the beach within a few miles. If and individual is over the age of 21 there is local bars throughout town and San Diego is only a short drive away.

    Food and Dining

There is no food plan for students living in the dorms since there is a kitchen included in each room. The Cougar Cafe offers many types of food, and depending on who is cooking that day the food can be very good. The only problem is it is not open all the time and can get expensive.

    Dorm Life

I thoroughly enjoyed living in the dorms. There is always some type of event taking place in the dorms for the students and the living arrangements are nice. Each dorm has a kitchen, two bathrooms, and a living room in each dorm room. The only downfall is how many residential advisers are assigned to each floor and how much they cost for the size of the room.

    Academic Rigor

For the Business program, I believe it is pretty intense. Many classes and professors are tough, but the students learn a great deal and the professors are always there to help. Yet, each program is different, as well as each professor.

    Tips for prospective students

I recommend living in the dorms for at least one year and getting involved on campus. Since the school is considered a commuter campus, living on campus for a year and getting involved opens up many more doors for each individual. Involvement is the best way to make friends, meet the staff, and better understand the campus.

    In three sentences

I absolutely love CSUSM and all it has to offer. Between the location, staff, and student life, CSUSM is a wonderful school for those who are looking for a smaller campus. Personally, I would give my school four out of five stars.

    Campus Safety

We constantly are seeing a few cops around campus. San Marcos is a city with a lower crime rate, but it's nice to see the officers. You mainly see them pulling over unlawful drivers.

    Clubs and Activities

Since the school is a commuter school it is constantly growing and changing. There are already many established clubs that fit most people and their personalities, but the campus is expanding their clubs. You really have to join a club or activity to be up to date with current school events.

    What to do for fun

Every Tuesday and Thursday during U-Hour a bunch of clubs promote themselves and it's just a great time. There are some live bands, tons of free food, and a lot of people to go out and meet and share a good time with. Also near October we have a mascarade ball which really fun to go to.

    Food and Dining

The food on campus is pretty good but it is costly. San Marcos is in a real urban area so there are plenty of cheap and delicious stores and restaurants nearby.

    Dorm Life

I have no personal experience with the dorms because I don't live on campus, but they are expanding the dorms and making housing more available for students.

    Academic Rigor

There are many teachers that are willing to go the extra mile to help each individual student in any way they can. There are also many other teachers who show up to class, lecture, and leave in a hurry. All teachers have designated office hours which they are open for individual help. As for the students, many are willing to help others out and make study groups as long as you do your share. Everyone is paying some sort of money to go to school and everyone wants to succeed whether it's studying with others or individual practice.

    Tips for prospective students

Look up your teachers reviews before you enter their class. Some are a lot better than others and it could make or break your grade. Also check with the teacher before buying all the books required for the class. Sometimes you don't always have time or a book is not necessary and it's an easy way to save money.

    In three sentences

San Marcos was not my first pick of schools but since it was local I decided to go there. Now I am entering my third year and really starting to like it; you have to get involved to really enjoy the school. It's a hit and miss with the teachers; some are really devoted and others don't seem to really care.

    Food and Dining

They have a wide variety of food to choose from like sushi.

Top of the line safety. They have call boxes located all throughout campus so if you feel unsafe at any point just press the button for assistance. They have their own police department and patrol on a regular basis. I have always felt safe and never has there been a concern for me safety.

    Greek Life

Lots to choose from! Girl ones, boy ones, and co-ed. The choice is yours. All groups are very involved with the community and school activites.

    Clubs and Activities

Lots of clubs and social groups you can join. There are many fraternities to choose from and smaller groups to join. Have an idea? You can create your own group! Their student center is pretty neat. Like I said earlier reminds me of a 24 hour fitness where there is great workout equipment, courts, and classes you can take to stay in shape. The campus also has events and vendors that come out. Lots of career opportunities.

Great for these types of students

All Majors get a quality education!!! I have friends from every major and they are all very impressed. In fact I am going back this fall to do their teaching program because they have such a great reputation.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I love the library. It is so big you could spend all day and still not see every room. I love that some of the rooms look like a full on living room so you can relax, study, or read a good book. Just open the doors and be surprised at what is on the other side. Best place ever!!!

    Bang for the buck

Can't go wrong with great teachers, clean campus, up to date technology, and of course location. Tuition is not as high as surrounding universities like SDSU, UCSD, USD, etc... You get a quality education, avoid overcrowed classroom, and save money! Worth every penny.

    What to do for fun

Lots of stuff to do for fun. On campus there is a work out center and they have activities that you can do. Reminds me of a 24 hour fitness center. Off campus there is a grocery store, bars, and great food places available that are walking distance. Being in san marcos you are only 20 minutes from San Diego, 1 hour from Los Angeles, the beach is 10 minutes, the desert is only 2.5 hours, the snow is 3 hours, and Vegas is less than 5 hours. So really the stuff to do for fun is UNLIMITED!!!

    Food and Dining

Food is average. Every year though they seem to be improving. No big-chain foods except for Subway, but there is a convenient store so you can still get a quick snack.

    Dorm Life

I did not live in the dorms, but I have heard they are decent. You do live in an area where there are lots of things to do and there is a great local transportation system. So if you don't have a car - no worries!

    Academic Rigor

High expectations from teachers, but still reasonable. You can work and still go to school. They also have a 2500 word requirement for each class. Don't let this scare you. The professors usually have students do either one research paper, a group paper, mini journal entries, or a presentation to meet this requirement. But in the end you do become more confident in your writings.

    Tips for prospective students

Be ready to go up stairs. Yes there are elevators, but you have to learn the layouts first to get the shortcuts. Parking is not that bad, but you still have to walk up hill where ever you go. Great way to loose calories.

    In three sentences

Very clean campus and they take pride in their recycling and staying 'Green'. Teachers are very knowledgeable about the subject they teach and the classroom size stay small. This is a new campus, but the location is great and it has one of the largest libraries in Southern California.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is great at CSUSM. You can always find a campus police officer somewhere on campus. At night, there are poles that you can use to call a police officer.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Every year (this started my freshman year), there is an Undie Run on campus. Don't let the name fool you! This event that happens around Cinco de Mayo every year is actually for a good cause. Everyone comes in clothes that they are ready to donate to those who are less fortunate. Each person strips down to their underwear and runs across campus. It's a very memorable experience for everyone who participates and it is something you don't want to miss!

    What to do for fun

There is so much to do at CSUSM. At The Clarke, which is the school gym, there are so many trips that Campus Recreation takes. From skiing and snowboarding to archery to indoor rock climbing, there is always something fun they have to offer. Aside from all of the fun physical activities, there are many clubs and organizations on campus. In fact, there are so much that I truly believe that there is something for everyone on this campus. I highly recommend joining Greek life... it is a truly awesome experience and you will make lifelong friendships.

    Food and Dining

CSUSM is a very unique school in that there is no meal plan. You are forced to fend for yourself and this was very challenging for me. I learned a lot freshman year about food shopping and ways to save money. At first, I didn't like that there was no meal plan, but I'm much more appreciative of the fact now. There are places on campus to get something to eat and lots of times during U-Hour, clubs and organizations on campus will give away free food! Take advantage of this!

    Dorm Life

Dorm life at CSUSM is great. The dorms, built less than ten years ago, are spacy and very clean. The Quad is the new dorm building and, so far, it looks great! It's being finished in August and although it is expensive to live there, there are many other opportunities to live off campus with other students.

    Academic Rigor

There are some classes that are much harder than others; just like there are professors who will be much harder on you than others. If you like what you're doing and going for, you'll do great here. Many professors are big on being on time to class and, most importantly, turn your cell phone off and put it away for an hour!

    Tips for prospective students

At CSUSM, getting involved is key. Whether it be O-Team, ASI (kind of like a high school ASB), or Greek life, CSUSM has so much to offer and it's so important that each student takes advantage of this. Study hard but enjoy your time at school!

    In three sentences

CSUSM has so much to offer for every single student. The campus is so diverse and welcoming to anyone. My school has inspired me to reach my full potential and I love it.

    Campus Safety

Campus security is constantly consistent. The campus police department is pretty responsive when it comes to crime. I haven't stumbled across any areas on campus that have been tagged nor have I seen any vandalism occur. Parking structures are well lit and the campus does offer an escort service for females when it gets dark outside.

    Greek Life

Greek life is pretty amazing here. Sorority and Fraternity students get together all the time and host events for other students.

    Clubs and Activities

Every Tuesday and Thursday the school has a set free time called U-Hour. During 12 to 1, there are no classes so students get to interact with each other. The school sometimes provides free foods through clubs and other organizations.

Great for these types of students

Introverted students would love this school being that you do not really have to interact with other students. Students with disabilities would find this school easy to navigate being that there is easy access to elevators.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There are hidden areas on campus that do not attract a lot of attention. These areas seem to be where most introverts spend their time.

    Bang for the buck

Once again, you do get what you pay for.. CSUSM has cheap tuition costs but as stated before, most of the professors that have been teaching here for more than 8 years really lack the fire that'd you expect.

    What to do for fun

On campus, there is a Rec. Center. We also have a frisbee type sport with goals all over campus.

    Food and Dining

We have our own campus cafeteria with asian, italian, and american food. It's expensive but if you need to grab a bite to eat, go for it.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is great! The students that go to this school are not as bad as some think. There's rarely any partying and nothing really gets out of control.

    Academic Rigor

Professors are seriously lacking in this department. Most lack the sheen that you'd expect from professors teaching their assigned subjects. There are a handful of professors that do care about what they teach but most of these professors are ones that are fresh out of college.

    Tips for prospective students

Research other schools before choosing CSUSM. See which schools have higher rated professors. On another note, you can't really beat tuition costs with this school.

    In three sentences

CSUSM is a small school. Classes are somewhat cramped, the professors are sometimes lacking, and the Financial Aid department takes forever to process financial aid disbursement. After saying all this, I do love my school; the views from the library are scenic, the sports programs are great, and you are afforded an education with a degree employers will accept.

    Campus Safety

Campus is very secure. There are blue towers located everywhere on campus that you can press if you feel unsafe, or need police assistance.

    Bang for the buck

Granted, CSUSM's tuition each semester is expensive, but it's college. You're going to pay the price for a higher education anywhere you go. But they do try their best to make it as inexpensive as they can.

    What to do for fun

I would recommend signing up for clubs when you get the chance. Met new people, maybe find something that you love to do and get involved or try something that you've always wanted to try. I signed up for Women's Lacrosse my first year at CSUSM and it was the fastest way of both trying something I've always wanted to do and to met new peeps.

    Food and Dining

Food is alright, but nothing beats a packed lunch. There's a Starbucks by the library and in the Dome, which is basically our cafeteria, there's The Big Cat Market, which it like a gas station store but way better, and the cafe. There are many different types of food to pick from in the cafe but nothing under $5 I'm afraid. There's also a Coffee Cart which I hear sells amazingly delicious smoothies and of course coffee drinks for all the coffee lovers. And it's cheaper than Starbucks.

    Dorm Life

I personally didn't live in the dorms but I had friends that did and they were very nice. The dorms are comparable to small apartments and contain a reasonable kitchen, small living room, two rooms with two bunk-beds, two rooms with single beds and two bath rooms. The activities halls is a nice place to hang out and play some pool or watch something on the flat screen T.V that's in there. And even though I didn't live in the dorms, I met a lot of awesome people there.

    Academic Rigor

I admit, you will have some of the best and worst professors here. You will get the professors that you love and can't wait to attend their classes, and then you will get the professors that you can't understand and don't seem to really care. But the best professors you ever have will outweigh the crummy ones by far.

    Tips for prospective students

You wont regret coming to this college. It's an amazing learning environment and a great place to grow not only as a person but intellectually as well.

    In three sentences

This will be my second year attending CSUSM and it's such a wonderful campus. I admit it looks pretty small compared to some other colleges, but there are so many little nooks that you can find and call your own. The campus is beautiful, very clean, and it has lots of opportunities for students to get involved.

    What to do for fun

I don't really stay on campus after class unless I have another class. I can't really say much about what to do for fun.

    Food and Dining

I don't eat at the cafeteria because I usually bring my own food. They have a starbucks on campus so I usually just go there to buy food or drinks. Other than that I wouldn't really know much about the cafeteria food.

    Dorm Life

I don't live in the dorms, but I have been in the dorms. They are really nice and people living there seem really great. I heard they are a bit pricey, but the money is worth it.

    Academic Rigor

Professors challenge their students to be the best they can be. They give a fair amount of homework and tests challenge your academic skills.

    Tips for prospective students

Pay for your classes as soon as you can otherwise you will get dropped from your classes. Check your to do list for any documents that you need to turn in for financial aid. Buy your parking permit early, but if you don't have the money park in the neighborhood by CSUSM and walk.

    In three sentences

I love the diversity of school because it allows me to learn, not just inside the classroom, but also outside. The students are kind, welcoming , and helpful to newcomers. The professors inspire me to never stop learning and to believe in myself and what I am worth.

    Bang for the buck

Compared to other larger schools, California State University, San Marcos is more on the less expensive side for tuition, although tuition in general is relatively expensive. It is only about 15 minutes from the beach and 30 minutes from San Diego so there is a lot of fun things to do around here! Again, the learning is what you can get out of it if you put forth effort.

    What to do for fun

There is always an event happening on campus from Blood Drives to free food from local restaurants to fun games! The favorite and most-widely known event in which many participate is the Zombies Vs. Humans game played during the week of Halloween.

Another popular place to get food is the stand that's in front of the University Store which sells food products ranging from beverages to hot food items.

    Dorm Life

The University Village Apartments are located on campus and 5 minute walking distance from the school. They are fully furnished with a living room and kitchen, and essentially are the best option for first-year students. The atmosphere is incredibly friendly and the staff and resident advisors are sincere and helpful. The Quad located across the street is the newly built dorm building providing more rooms for the expanding school.

    Academic Rigor

The difficulty of the classes ultimately depends on the professors and your ability to learn and comprehend the material. The classes aren't that difficult if you complete your assignments and do everything you're asked.

    Tips for prospective students

    Food and Dining

The Coffee Cart on campus is amazing, they need one on the other end of campus. That's the only issue I have, which is all the food is located on one side of the campus. But overall the quality of the food sold is above average and the price is reasonable. Also there's plenty of food and dining opportunities available in the area off-campus.

    Dorm Life

Haven't personally lived in the dorms, but I've heard they're nice but pricey.

    Academic Rigor

The quality of the classes here are rather high, once you get passed the basic GE level courses. Teachers are great. Plenty of outside class help available.

    Tips for prospective students

Definitely have a plan, or at least know who to talk to when it comes to planning your semesters here. Don't just believe what the counselors say because they're counselors. Be sure to talk to professors and other students for tips about what classes to take and when they're offered. Same goes fro taking other classes outside of CSUSM, make sure that they'll count for whatever you need BEFORE you take them, sometimes the class requirements between CSUSM and other community colleges don't always match.

    In three sentences

CSUSM is a beautiful campus. Help is available in many different forms for any academic or even non-academic related issues. The overall student and teacher personality type is an easy-going and open-minded one, albeit there are those few that don't quite fit into that category.

The only challenge that has occurred is adjusting to the college life. Being out on your own can be scary at first but California State University San Marcos makes it easy for all students to feel welcome and like they belong to the community.

    Bang for the buck

Keep your grades up and the Cal Grant will cover tuition and fees. Don't take summer school unless you want to pay 250 a unit (CRAZY) plus books. Books are resonable pried but you'll do better if you can rent them.

    What to do for fun

Sororities, Frats, Clubs...get involved!!! Theres plenty of bars around and clubs arent too far away.

    Food and Dining

Cougar central is expensive. I mean it's okay maybe a little above average on pricing, but you have restaurant row like one exit away (less than a mile) where you can save money and get more.

    Dorm Life

Dorms are okay. They were just built so all i can say is that it's an experience.

    Academic Rigor

Classes are tough. For upper division classes make sure you teach yourself because a lot of teachers already expect you to know what they are trying to teach you. It's difficult.

    Tips for prospective students

Buy your books early and read them ahead of time. Use Ratemyprofessor.com for instructor rating because they are pretty accurate and if you find a teacher with an overall rating above 3.5 take them because the average rating for these instructors is about a 2.87

    In three sentences

Teachers here are tough, but you will learn what you need to know. The campus isnt very large, but you will get used to climbing stairs. We have an on campus Starbucks which is very convenient.

    Campus Safety

I find it a very safe campus with campus police that will take you to your car or dorm if you feel the need to.

    Clubs and Activities

There are any activities and sport clubs to be a part of. Trips to the beach, snow, basketball games, amusement parks, dances and many more!

    Bang for the buck

    parking permit are pretty expensive.

    What to do for fun

The beach, train station, and shopping center isn't very far, and the school offers many trips, excursions, and activities for the students.

    Food and Dining

On campus all I have bought is water, bagels, and pizza. There are a few options available for food such as the food court, the carts and Starbucks, but there are also places down the street to eat which are not so pricey either. (CSUSM water isn't expensive!) They will be opening a new bigger food court soon so it will be even better.

    Dorm Life

The Dorms are small, and the rent is pretty expensive, but if you're rooming with fiends it shouldn't be much of a problem as long as you get along and respect. Many people complain. During finals there are study rooms and places to study specifically for those who live in the dorms if they wish to study nearby. Personally, apartments are a better choice.

    Academic Rigor

It simply depends on what courses you choose, easy classes, not so challenging. upper division classes may be very time consuming.

    Tips for prospective students

The only tips I would suggest is to not slack off in any class during high school and to take advantage of other languages and AP courses since they do count in the future and will be able to save money and get ahead of the game. Another tip is once you know what books you need, don't go and buy it brand new, sometime professors will allow older (cheaper) versions or it may be better to simply rent a book instead of buying it new.

    In three sentences

Cal State San Marcos has many stairs which are great in order to avoid the freshman 15. The school has a great welcoming environment and the professors and classes thus far are pretty attentive and not so over-whelming. The programs and resources available are great to easy the transfer from high school to college life!

I've heard if you step on the university crest you wont graduate. Also if you rub the Cesar Chavez statue's books you'll get a passing grade on a test.

    What to do for fun

U-hour gets interesting every once in awhile. In addition, the university has several events going on every week that provide some entertainment.

    Food and Dining

The food is great on campus, they have their own staff that prepares it right in front of you. The only downside is that it is kind of expensive.

    Dorm Life

I do not have a clue I commute. But the dorms are very close to several establishments, giving the dorm users a variety to choose from.

    Academic Rigor

Prepare to be challenged to think about topics that you consider taboo or too hallowed. Prepare to spend nights writing essays. Prepare to enjoy smart debates. Prepare to have fun.

    Tips for prospective students

My one and only tip to prospective students would be to not be afraid to choose a small school. The one-on-one teaching experience you get from the professors here is an incredible asset that big colleges do not have.

    In three sentences

Cal State San Marcos is definitely not a university that most people choose as a first choice; however, this institution has proved to be my home away from home. The ambiance given by my fellow students, professors, and staff is one of genuine kindness and joviality. There are many cultural/ hobby clubs on campus for personal preferences. I like to go to the Sprinter Station near the University Police Station and take the Sprinter to the Beach or the Bowling Alley.

    Food and Dining

There is not many eateries at Cal State University San Marcos. But not far there is a Sprinter Station that can take you on stops from Escondido to you get to Oceanside if you cannot drive. And if you can drive food places are not far from the university.

    Dorm Life

It varies for me. But I think dorm life has made me a different person. I am usually shy and to myself. For the past year, I have been able to stand my grown and deal with different personalities. It is definitely a people person experience.

My professors were really kind and passionate about what they do. They are sensitive to my needs because I put a lot of effort on each of my classes. The classes are not to difficult but I was a little overwhelmed by the coursework of my business classes. Food and Dining

Recently the school has constructed a new student union consisting of 5 or so restaurants. They are expensive and I have never seen anyone with a meal plan. Since our dorms all have fully-equipped kitchens we mostly cook for ourselves.

    Dorm Life

Dorms on campus are apartment-styled, but extremely expensive. The school is also home to a plethora of commuters so the friendly environment is not present. Unlike other dormitories, you hardly know anyone in your hall... much less your next door neighbors.

    Academic Rigor

If the professors are not reading verbatim from a publisher's lecture than they are teaching at a community college (meaning you can pay hundreds of dollars less for the same curriculum). Tips for prospective students

If you want a laid back environment that slowly eases you into college this campus is for you. Keep in mind it is very expensive and overall unorganized.

When i first heard about this college it wasn't as interesting as it is now. When i first stepped on their campus i realized that this University was different than the rest. It's not a big university but it's very nice and i can tell that students find themselves comfortable with the environment. With this said, my older sister attends CSUSM and so will I.
