Categories Comments Great for these types of students CNU is the best place for students who enjoy being involved in school activities, who enjoy getting to know their professors and working hands on in class rather than in a lecture hall, who are interested in a small campus rather than large, and who want to attend a school that is becoming one of the most esteemed and respected universities in the country.
Tips for prospective students If you are looking for a small campus with state of the art facilities, ideal location, and small classes than CNU is the place for you. Do not attend CNU if you are going to college for the sole purpose of partying, because it is a school known for its great education, not its party scene.
Am enjoying being here CNU's campus is absolutely beautiful! All of the facilities including the DSU, Ferguson Center, and the Trible Library are new, spectacular, and state of the art. The location is exemplary in that it is just a short drive away from beaches and historic sights such as Virginia Beach, Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, and Water Country USA. Not only is it a wonderful and prestigious university its location also provides it with excellent recreation.
Am learning a lot Something that CNU prides itself upon is the fact that its classes are small. On average a class will have 25 students in it, which encourages students to interact with their professors and makes it much easier to obtain help when it is needed. Professors are able to do things more hands-on with each student which makes it simple and a lot more fun to learn than in a lecture-based class.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students CNU is an up and coming school both in regards to academics and extracurricular opportunities. If you are someone who wants to be involved while still being academically challenged, then Christopher Newport is the school for you. CNU is also a fairly small school, so it’s great for students who want to be noticed as an individual rather than just a member of a large class group.
Tips for prospective students CNU’s campus is well kept and well structured so new students rarely have trouble finding where they need to go for class. However, the University is regularly updating their buildings, constructing new ones and tearing down the old. Though that is not a bad thing, as a result there is a lot of construction, which can sometimes make it confusing because one day you will be able to walk into a building from one side, and the next the entrance will be blocked off. But if you leave for class early enough, this is usually not a problem. The Newport News area also gets a significant amount of rain, so a good jacket with a hood is definitely useful.
Bang for the buck While I don’t want to give the impression that I would like to pay more money, after having visited other schools in Virginia (including many private schools), I found that CNU had the most amenities to offer. The dorm rooms are larger than most schools, and you can even control the temperature of your own room. They are air conditioned, wired for internet and cable, and even come with a refrigerator/freezer and microwave. The second floor of the David Student Union has a number of pool tables, an air hockey table, and a foosball table that are open to students for most of the day. The campus also has two separate dining halls, Regatta’s and the Commons, and both are all you can eat. Regatta’s is more formal, and they regularly serve steak, and sometimes even crab legs, while the Commons provides a more cafeteria-like feel.
Am enjoying being here CNU’s location on the James River and its proximity to Virginia Beach (about a half hour drive) gives students a wide range of different recreational opportunities off campus. One weekend this fall, my roommate’s girlfriend came to visit. She attends a large, urban college in Virginia. As we were taking her on a tour of the campus, we walked past students in the front lawn of the York River Residence Halls. They were throwing Frisbees, playing the guitar, having picnics, and laughing and generally having a good time, as the day was warm and sunny. She noted that at her school, the atmosphere was much different. She said that if you even so much as stepped outside, you would never see such activities, and were more likely to get mugged than meet new friends. I joked that at CNU, kisses and gumdrops tend to just fall from the sky. At that moment, my roommate bent down, and picked up a sticker of a kiss off the ground. “See,” I told her, “I wasn’t lying,” and we continued our tour.
Am learning a lot Christopher Newport offers a number of programs that can help you enhance your educational opportunities, such as the Honors Program or the Presidents Leadership Program. I am lucky enough to be involved in both of these programs. The academic classes, seminars, and opportunities offered by these programs greatly enhance the quality of the school. However, even if you are not involved in programs such as these, classes are generally taught by professors (not graduate students) who know their subject well. Most are willing to meet with you outside of class during their office hours, and many will even set up appointments outside of their scheduled times, if you ask. Class sizes are also small, which allows you and the professor to gain a closer relationship. I have just finished my first semester and already have had two of my professors write letters of recommendation for me. Overall, I have found the academics to be challenging, but not overwhelming.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Great for students who want to go to a beautiful, well administrated school. Be aware that it is small and if you are looking to party, this is not the college for you.
Tips for prospective students If you are looking for a small school with small classes so professor's know you on a first name basis, this is the school for you.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students CNU is great for all types of students. On my hall alone there are the quiet gamer smart kids, the loud rambunctious partiers, and those in-between. Whether you like to study or just have fun, CNU is where it's at. It might not be completely out there like the other colleges but it's still pretty amazing.
Tips for prospective students Do what I didn't do, check online first to see if you got easy professors. I was lucky to end up with easy ones but some of my friends have strict and hard professors. Bring a lot of toilet paper. Five guys go through them pretty fast. Bring cologne and deodorant because the dorms are coed so you have to smell nice for the ladies.
Bang for the buck I wouldn't say it's worth how much it costs. The food is just a couple of steps above high school cafeteria food. Not gross but could be better. The dorm rooms are big though. They are bigger then those in other colleges. It does cost more than I think it should but don't let that discourage you from visiting. The campus looks good and it's getting better.
Am enjoying being here I love it here. The campus is extremely small. You can walk everywhere. The atmosphere is peaceful and people do actually say hi to you when you see them.
Am learning a lot I am lucky enough to have received great teachers for my first semester, not to mention they were extremely easy. The small classes here really helps me learn better. I was in a learning community and we are just a group of students with the same major and classes. That helped a lot having people who you can work with and study with.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck I would say it is about average on the price range. It's nowhere close to the private colleges but I'm sure there are cheaper out there. I will say the dorms are excellent and way better than any other dorm that I have been in. The food is also very good and I have not ate in other dining halls but from people that have visited, CNU's dining is much better than theirs. So this being said, I would say coming to CNU is worth the money as everything seems to be a little nicer.
Am enjoying being here I have enjoyed being at CNU. The campus is beautiful and while construction is going on currently it will be very nice when it is all complete. It is one of the better looking college campuses I have been to. There is always something going on from the CAB events held on the weekends and the sporting events on various days. The sports teams are also good so it is fun to go and cheer for them.
Am learning a lot I have learned a lot while attending CNU for only one semester. I can tell the professors actually care about the grades their students get and will work with you well. They always have office hours for students to come and talk about grades. Another thing is the small class sizes which allows the professors to spend individual time with students and it really helps. Also, I am living on a freshman hall where mostly everybody is in over half of my classes so there is always somebody to help you out and CNU does a great job of grouping these students.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Even though you can slip by with a minimal amount of work, hard working students will thrive here. There is enough to keep them busy but there is also time to relax, if you stay on track with your work and don't overload yourself.
Tips for prospective students Come visit campus. I was uncertain about CNU until I was on campus taking the tour, then I fell in love.
Bang for the buck The food here is certainly worth it. I'd say it's way better than high school cafeteria food. It is also worth the price for the education, we are very well taught by great professors who care.
Am enjoying being here I love this place! Yes, it is stressful at times, but there are plenty of opportunities to get out and do something to get away from the stress for a while. There are tons of clubs and the student activity board CAB does a wonderful job putting together themed weekends for everyone. Plus, if you want to so something off campus, there are plenty of different things here around campus that are available as well.
Am learning a lot The classes here were as difficult as I had expected. They are at a higher level than the ones in high school. I am learning about things I did in high school, however, the pace is much quicker and there are more details.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students CNU is perfect for students who want to attend a small school - but not too small. Students and professors know each others names at CNU. You are not just another face in a classroom. Classroom sizes are usually very small compared to most colleges. I have actually been very close with my advisor, he has helped me through my transition into college. I am not afraid to approach any of my teachers for help, which is great! If you want to actually talk to your professors, this is the place to be!
Tips for prospective students GPA and SAT scores are definitely important. When I applied, however, my GPA and SAT scores were okay, but I was definitely no valedictorian. CNU loves students who are involved and passionate about something - whether its school, sports, religion, etc. If you show CNU that you are passionate about something and that that passion can contribute to the CNU community, you have a much better chance of getting in.
Bang for the buck CNU is the most expensive public school in VA. That being said, there are brand new dorms and brand new buildings and classrooms, with more being put up all over campus. The fitness pavilion has been recently expanded, and a brand new science building (complete with cadaver lab! Ah!) is nearing completion (it will be open for classes in Fall of 2011).
Am enjoying being here I love being at CNU! I've been a member of the cheerleading team and have loved being involved in athletics. There is so much to do here, it's really easy to get involved and make friends. The athletic program is really excellent, and there are a ton of clubs to participate in. And if there is something you'd like to do but a club doesn't exist, you can start your own club! There's even a coloring club on campus! It's so much fun and there is so much to do with your free time at CNU.
Am learning a lot Almost all of the departments at CNU are filled with staff members who have at least one PhD or higher. All of the professors are highly qualified in their fields. There is also the chance for undergraduate research, which is a huge learning experience and is usually not available to freshmen and sophomores. The teachers here want you to do well, and are really involved with your learning and are passionate about teaching.

Categories Comments Campus Safety CNU has a text-alert system whenever the CNU PD finds or reports suspicious activity. If anyone feels threatened at any time, they can press one of the blue buttons located around campus and receive immediate police assistance. The residence halls are always attended by front desk assistants or police aids. Overall, most students feel safe on campus.
Greek Life Greek life is prevalent, and growing. They are a community within our community, and support one another as well as the campus. It is easy to get involved in Greek life, and they are very accepting. For those who do not want to be involved, there is plenty to do outside of Greek life as well.
Clubs and Activities There is a club or activity for everyone-be it music, sports, or even cigars! If a student has an interest that is not already represented, it is very easy to create a club or activity and to gain campus support for it.
Great for these types of students Students who want one-on-one experience with professors, a friendly and small community, a voice in their education, and a chance to get involved should consider CNU.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus As a freshman, every student signs the honor code and receives a penny. After graduation, the seniors throw these pennies into the fountain. It is a huge honor, and a symbol that they have upheld the values of CNU throughout their undergraduate experience.
Bang for the buck CNU is expensive, but compared to other universities of that caliber they really do deliver a quality experience.
What to do for fun Campus Activities Board has free, safe, and alcohol-free events every weekend. They are always bringing in artists (like Sara Bareilles) and comedians. They also host life-sized board games and wonderful speakers. Fraternities and Sororities are also very involved in campus-life, and often host events like sing-offs and shows.
Food and Dining The food overall is quite good, but it does get repetitive and there are only two dining halls. They are constantly coming up with new healthy options, but it is sometimes difficult to eat healthy all the time at CNU.
Dorm Life Our residence life team is impeccable. They all aim to give each student the best living experience possible. The residence halls are top-of-the-line and constantly improving. The living situation is great.
Academic Rigor The professors challenge and inspire you-but they are also there to help! Do not be afraid to ask questions and visit them during their office hours.
Tips for prospective students Do not be afraid to go up and introduce yourself to people, be it on a tour or during orientation; you might make an important connection! College is a chance for a fresh start, but always stay true to yourself. Go in with an open-mind rather than boxing yourself into expectations. Regardless of your current opinion on greek life, give it a chance-you do not have to join, but CNU greek life may surprise you. If you fall in love with the campus it is not a coincidence-you belong here!
In three sentences At CNU we are definitely a tight-knit community and a family. The courses are challenging and inspiring, and taught by top-of-the-line professors who truly care about the success of each student. Any student looking for an academic challenge, strong relationships, and opportunities to get involved and stay involved should consider CNU.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students You have to be willing to get involved. Professors will know your name, even in big classes, and they'll notice when you skip class and aren't trying. It's also not the kind of school where you only go to class, most people seem to be involved in a club or two at least.
Tips for prospective students The campus is beautiful and mostly new, but construction isn't a problem and isn't in the way. Rainboots are a good idea, it rains a lot in the winter and early spring instead of snowing.
Bang for the buck As an in-state student, absolutely! I am getting a great education and living in a beautiful residence hall at an affordable cost. I don't know much about out-of-state costs so it could be different.
Am enjoying being here There is so much to do around campus! There are lots of clubs with a wide variety of interests and it's easy to start a new one. Campus Activities Board (CAB) has events every weekend on campus for free. Everyone is really friendly and it has a great sense of community!
Am learning a lot The strong liberal learning core lets you take a lot of different classes and helps you to learn outside your major from amazing professors. The classes are challenging but interesting and the professors are absolutely wonderful!

Categories Comments Great for these types of students CNU is great for students who are independent, or that need extra help. There is an awesome tutoring/writing center on campus. It is great for students who love being outside as well, since when the weather is nice, you can see most of the student body sprawled out over the numerous lawns.
Tips for prospective students If you know what you want to major in or do with your life, then just make sure the school you pick definitely has a program that works with it. If you end up having to transfer after making all new friends because of this, you will have major regrets.
Bang for the buck This is one of the cheapest state schools, and is a well kept secret in Va. Everyone I know that goes here or has went here loves it, including me.
Am enjoying being here The residence halls are amazing. The people are extremely nice. The building are gorgeous, and the classes are interesting.
Am learning a lot Depending on the program you come from, and your major you can learn a lot at this school. The class sizes are small, and the professors want to help you succeed. Most every professor is on a first name basis with their students. If you make an effort, they will meet you halfway.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Students who enjoy small class sizes, learning communities where everyone helps everyone else and love to learn in a classroom or from other people will excel here. The only classes I have that are more than 20 people are when multiple grades are collaborated into a lecture hall. Even then the numbers don't even reach 150 which is much smaller than the class sizes found at other institutions.
Tips for prospective students Make sure each school as the program you need and that you can handle the work load and expectations of the school. Take rigorous courses your senior year so the work load of college will not seem so daunting in the beginning. You should also try to have an idea of what major you want so you can register for the appropriate classes at the beginning of your career!
Bang for the buck I have received and been offered many scholarships to help me pay for tuition and the financial aid office is prompt with addressing concerns. I learn a lot and the school breaks down your bill so that you can see exactly where the money you give them will be put to use.
Am enjoying being here Everyone is friendly and there is a group for everyone. I take the heaviest course load without going over and am a science major but I still have plenty of time to socialize and do a team sport. The sense of community is overwhelming and it is very rare to meet someone who is unkind.
Am learning a lot In my initial classes, I did not learn a lot of new things but I did learn more details about my existing knowledge. Some of it was surprising but there was a lot of I didn't even think of that! moments. If you struggle in a subject, a simple email to the professor often gets you help, alternatives to help out your grades or at least good advice on who to see for tutoring.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Christopher Newport is a school for all types of students. Everyone can find something here that they'll like!
Tips for prospective students Just be yourself and find what works for you, such as work/school at the same time and good study habits while trying to enjoy yourself at the same time!
Bang for the buck This school isn't even expensive. It is completely worth every penny!
Am enjoying being here Not only am I with my best friends, but in the time I've been there I've made so many more people as friends. A few of them I consider best friends and there are also one or two I now consider family.
Am learning a lot The teachers here are amazing. They are very patient and understanding.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students All those who enjoy intimate classes (i.e. smaller class sizes, personal-relationships with professors), warmer weather, availability to city (Richmond) or beach (VA Beach).
Tips for prospective students As for the application process, do not get discouraged if you are Wait-listed. This is one of the most up-and-coming universities in the U.S. today, therefore they are doing their best to accept all students that they feel can truly benefit from the school & benefit the school itself! Word to the wise, if you are wait-listed, send in as much extra stuff (awards, certificates, etc.) as soon as you can! Also, don't be afraid to call every week just to check in on application statuses, any additional information they may need, etc.
Bang for the buck The price is a bit more than most schools, but it honestly pays off. The buildings, landscape, technologies, etc. all reflect just much money you are paying!
Am enjoying being here I could not be happier! The environment is so welcoming, the location is perfect, and the education I am receiving is more than I could have ever imagined!
Am learning a lot There are so many majors and minors available that you truly get to go after what you have a passion for! I am an Psychology-Elementary Education major and have learned so much more than I knew was possible. The variety of Areas of Inquiry (gen. eds) allow for a vast expansion of several subjects, while all tying it into what your major is.

Categories Comments Campus Safety cnu is very very safe! all students are respectful of each other's belongings and there are campus police vehicles around at all times.
Greek Life there are many sororities and fraternities here at cnu. each are welcoming, although they do not interest me very much.
Clubs and Activities clubs like martial arts club, coloring club, as well as hall council allows more introverted students, like myself, feel more in touch with the school.
Great for these types of students cnu is great for all students. no exceptions.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus cnu has what we call a 'blue crew' which is present at all sport games in order to show our cnu's spirit and pride.
Bang for the buck cnu is very expensive. however, the quality of education as well as the beautiful scenery is very well worth every dollar!
What to do for fun there is an amazing array of activities for students to take part in. for example, i am in santoro hall council as well as the mixed martial arts team.
Food and Dining the food here is absolutely fantastic! however, the only bad part is that students are only allowed one meal swipe per meal time even though the student may have 3 swipes per day. if the card is not swiped once for each mean, it is lost for ever.
Dorm Life the dorms are a bit small, however, it is not a big issue. hall mates are very understanding of each other's schedule times so when quiet hours are in session, there is little noise.
Academic Rigor cnu's academics challenges its students. however, the professors are very understanding when it comes to extra curricular activities so the work load is pretty manageable.
Tips for prospective students some tips would be to read the various chapters in the textbook as the professor is teaching the lesson because it will allow the student to better understand what is going on in the class.
In three sentences cnu is a very inviting and unique school. the friendly environment welcomes every student and visitor with open arms. the campus is gorgeous and the professors are superb!

Categories Comments Campus Safety there is never violence on campus. there are always cnu police officers patroling campus. you must have a student id to get into every resident building, and guests must be signed in.
Greek Life greek life is strong, and up and coming.
Great for these types of students cnu is very diverse when it comes to the types of people. there aren't really any cliques here that you see in most high schools. everyone just seems to get along with everyone.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus there aren't really unusual traditions about cnu.
Bang for the buck cnu is one of the cheaper colleges of virginia. compared to william and mary and uva, the difference in four years is thousands of dollars. they also have an honors and president leadership program, which award merit based scholarships for incoming freshman. if you come into cnu with a handful of credits, graduating a semester or even a year early is very easy and can save you thousands of dollars.
What to do for fun there are many activities on and off campus to stay entertained. the student cab of cnu puts together many on campus events like shows, movies, and games. we also have a very strong greek life which is up and coming. off campus there is a bowling ally within walking distance. there is also colonial williamsburg, busch gardens, and the beach very close by and within 20 minutes.
Food and Dining for the most part, the food is really good. there are two main dining areas on campus (the commons and regattas) as well as chick-fil-a, discovery bistro, cafe and pizza, and einstein's cafe. just off campus where the cnu apartments are have places such as panera, starbucks, and moe's.
Dorm Life the rooms are huge compared to most colleges. they are also new, so there isn't really any damage to them. each room comes with two wardrobes, two desks, two beds, a micro-fridge unit, a closet, a sink, ethernet, and bathroom shared by two other students in the suite.
Academic Rigor some classes present a lot of homework and reading, but others are one homework a week. it's about the same amount of work as taking all ap classes your first semester.
Tips for prospective students take advantage of the career center for planning. they are extremely helpful for interview preperation, resume building, and finding jobs and internships for you.
In three sentences christopher newport has a beautiful campus that continues to grow every day. the professors are great, and actually try to learn every student's name. great at helping you along the path of acheiving your goals.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus police and security are always on duty 24/7. The phone numbers to the CNU Police department is on the back of every student ID, so should an emergency arise, PD is one phone call away. Also, students are required to present their ID at every residence hall entrance to ensure the safety of the students. Personally, I have never once felt uncomfortable walking the campus any time of day.
Greek Life About 16% of the campus is a part of Greek Life, but it is still a large part of the campus. Most all of the Greek organization are service based, although there a few popular social chapters as well. Overall, Greek life is very well maintained and presented on campus. The campus is relatively dry, and Greek life adheres to the dry campus rules.
Clubs and Activities Tremendous amount of clubs and organizations available on campus for students of all kinds (there are 500+ clubs, activities, and organizations). Plenty of opportunities to get involved and even create your own clubs!
Great for these types of students Environment is welcoming to students from all areas of life and around the world! There is a little bit of each race and ethnicity on every corner of campus, and students are united together by the love, pride, and passion they share to be a CNU Captain.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus A particular tree on campus is called the hang out tree, since it is oddly shaped and makes for great climbing fun. Also, upon signing the honor code before starting classes your first you, you are given a penny assigned by CNU to continually uphold the honor code until graduation. Once graduation is successfully completed, the penny is tossed into a water fountain on campus, representing that you are an honorable Captain for life.
Bang for the buck Although CNU is on the pricey side for 4 year universities, all of the money goes towards maintaining the gorgeous campus, facilities, and making sure the students' voices are heard! The climate at CNU is always welcoming and full of school spirit.
What to do for fun There's always an abundance of campus activities to participate in, whether it be the campus club, sports activities, world renowned music artists and groups performing at the campus performing arts center, and many more options. There are also the opportunities to go to Virginia Beach, Busch Gardens, or off campus housing to have plenty of fun.
Food and Dining There are two wonderful dining facilities on campus with plenty of variety during the weeks. Vegetarians are also taken into consideration with each meal preparation. Plenty of on and off campus dining to choose from if the dining halls are not appealing at any point in time (such as Panera, Chik-fil-a, Moes, etc).
Dorm Life All residence halls are excellent and state of the art buildings. Plenty of housing available for around 5,000 students, and residential rooms are suite style (2 suites share one bathroom). Well trained Residential Assistants and excellent facilities make the resident halls a pleasure to live in. All residence halls are either new within the last 10 years, or are refurbished frequently to appear new and in excellent condition.
Academic Rigor Excellent classes and academic opportunities are available for all students. Such programs as the early Master's Degree Program, President's Leadership Program, Honors Program, and many undergraduate research opportunities make it very easy to excel and become well prepared for future career opportunities.
Tips for prospective students Make sure to become involved on campus with all the clubs and organizations that CNU has to offer! When you become immersed in campus organizations, you ultimately become better immersed in the CNU community. Be sure to keep regular contact with professors, as they are always friendly and willing to help a helping hand to students struggling. Also, never be afraid to use the Academic Tutoring center, since the extra help may be the difference between passing and failing a class!
In three sentences CNU is a small, prestigious 4 year university with a private school atmosphere and welcoming student population. Academic rigor is exemplary and rivals that of other larger public universities, including honorable mentions and well educated professors in every subject. State of the art facilities and academic buildings as well as top tier dining and residence halls.

Categories Comments Clubs and Activities CNU is known for its active campus with over 250 clubs and organizations. There's something here for everyone, and you can be sure to find something for your own interests.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Even though we've only just begun to register as a top college, there's this silly tradition involving pennies and fountain here at CNU. During your freshman year, you are given a penny in a protective case that you are to keep with you throughout your years. At graduation, everyone tosses their pennies back into the fountain of geese, a gift given to the university a while back.
What to do for fun CAB always has something planned, but of course if you have a car that doesn't hurt! Get out and explore Newport News, Virginia Beach, Williamsburg, or Norfolk. The good thing about this area is that we're always 30 minutes from the beach, a concert, etc.
Tips for prospective students Don't freak out if you don't know what you want to be. This is why CNU has decided to be a liberal arts school, so you can take all the necessary courses within your first or second year(s) and then decide what you would really like to study.
In three sentences CNU is the best place to be if you're looking to stand out in a crowd. We are a diverse group of kids who enjoy being involved on campus and always welcome new faces with smiles. As President Trible says, we are have the feel of a private college with the price of a public university.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I have never once felt unsafe while on CNU's campus, even when walking from the library, etc. at night. There are emergency call boxes all over campus, the paths are all well-lit, and the students genuinely uphold our honor code when it comes to looking out for our fellow students and also not taking unattended belongings.
Greek Life Greek Life is very present and active on campus, even though the majority of students are not involved in this demographic. Many people say that our Greek Life is not stereotypical in the sense of outright exclusiveness, hazing, or any other negative stereotypes of the sort, and I personally agree. All of the fraternities and sororities on campus actively put on events and fundraisers in support of their philanthropies as well as others. Conversely, while Greek Life is quite present at CNU, there are enough students here not involved in it that you can choose not to participate if you so desire.
Clubs and Activities There are a wide variety of extra-curricular activities available for students to get involved in ranging from philanthropy to intramural sports to Greek Life to musical and artistic organizations and everything in between.
Great for these types of students CNU is perfect for students who are friendly, driven, passionate, willing to get involved, willing to learn, courteous, and/or willing to play an active role in their own success.
Bang for the buck The quality of the professors and facilities at CNU reach quite a high calibur and rival many of the leading universities in the state. While on-campus housing costs can be considered a little steep, their amenities, overall quality, and guarantee of on-campus housing to all freshmen-juniors and most seniors make up for the expense. Additionally, CNU provides scholarships to many students involved in programs such as the President's Leadership Program or the Honors program that can offset some of these costs. Also, since the school is rising exponentially in prestige, getting a degree from this school now will pay off even more once students enter graduate school or the workforce.
What to do for fun There are plenty of activities both on and off of campus to engage in during free time. Many organizations host free events on campus that they'll advertise around campus, through email, etc. Our Campus Activities Board hosts free events every Friday and Saturday night ranging from musicians, comedians, and movie screenings to craft nights and Life-Size Clue and plenty more in between. The Ferguson Center also frequently hosts many student, faculty, and professional performances throughout the year. Additionally, many students frequently attend sports games, play sports on the lawn for fun, or go to the gym. There are three malls/shopping parks nearby (Patrick Henry Mall, City Center, and Peninsula Town Center), movie theaters, a Rebounderz, regular shopping centers, and more nearby. Many students frequent the Noland Trail on nice days as well to picnic, exercise, or simply walk recreationally. Additionally, CNU is a short drive from WIlliamsburg, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach and is also near a handful of beaches.
Food and Dining CNU currently has two dining halls that contain a relatively wide selection of food, plus additional food options in the student union, in the library, and on East Campus if you decide not to eat at either dining hall. Most of the food is pretty good and you can usually find at least something to eat in either dining hall. Two disadvantages of these dining halls in my opinion are the often high levels of sodium in a decent portion of the foods and the lack of true variety offered for the vegetarian/vegan/gluten intolerant demographic.
Dorm Life Dorm life at CNU can be very rewarding when students embrace it to its fullest potential. Especially during the first year, the school and residence life staff make a point of planning a wide variety of activities and services to promote a positive dorm life experience and make the transition from high school to college as smooth as possible. All floors in all buildings are co-ed by suite, meaning that individual suites are single sex, but each hall has an even mix of guys and girls. RAs and Front Desk Assistants alike create a friendly, familial atmosphere in each of the buildings. Additionally, the residence buildings themselves are extremely nice. The rooms in each building are relatively spacious, all of the bathrooms are suite-style, and all non-freshman suites have a living room (juniors and seniors also have their own kitchens).
Academic Rigor All of the courses I have taken at CNU thus far have been rigorous yet still manageable. Students are held to a high standard, largely due to small class sizes (most classes have 20-30 students and no classes have more than 100 students). That being said, all of the professors I have had at this school are more than happy to offer students assistance or additional resources if approached by a struggling student.
Tips for prospective students A few tips I would give to perspective CNU students are as follows: - Ask for help if you need it, whether it be from a professor, an adviser, an RA/FDA, or a peer. People here are genuinely nice, for the most part, and will be more than willing to help you. - Get involved with at least one extra-curricular or hobby. - Make an effort to create a positive experience for yourself. College is what you make it. - Try to be reasonably friendly to other people on campus. - If you haven't figured out a major right away, it's OK. - Keep an open mind.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There are many on campus options if you are in a club or organization then there is always something going on. Also we have something called CAB (campus activities board) and they put on various events through out the year which are a lot of fun and the best of all, they are all free! The surrounding area is also a lot of fun as well. There are many options for great dining, and shopping. We are right by the beach so that is a fun weekend get away, or going to Bush gardens is a great way to relieve stress!
Food and Dining There are two dining halls on CNU's campus and both have a wide variety of food options. The dining halls are always clean and provide a very comfortable dining experience. CNU even does theme meals for certain holidays or events and the food is great!!
Dorm Life The dorms at CNU are very nice and spacious! I love the rooms here. The only problem with housing is that registration is a pain in the neck because it is hard to get into the dorm you want and you are required to live on campus until you are a senior.
Academic Rigor CNU is very academically challenging! Every semester since I've been here, I have carried 17 credit hours and it is very difficult to keep up with the work. But it is possible, you just have to be good at time management. I am a very active student; besides being dedicated to my academics, I am also in a sorority on campus and I am in various clubs. So it is possible to maintain good grades and still have a life but you have to work hard!
Tips for prospective students Make sure you show the admissions office that you diserve to be a student here. CNU's standards for their applicants has recently been raised so make sure you meet them. They like to see a lot of extra-curriculars on your application, and things that make you special along with your good grades. Overall, I would say make sure you present yourself as being a well rounded individual because CNU is a liberal arts school and they like you to have a little bit of knowledge in a wide range of topics.
In three sentences CNU is a very progressive school and it is always growing by building beautiful new buildings. I love coming to school here because it is such a tight community, there are about 5,000 students so you often run into people you know. Everything you need is also within close walking distance which is great for rolling out of bed at 7:50 and making it on time for your 8am class.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Other than the obvious things Newport News has to offer, the Mariners Museum and the dozens of beaches located near campus, there is one place all students must go before they graduate. Rebounderz Indoor Trampoline Arena is the talk of campus. Rebounderz has been called the adult version of a bounce house and one of the craziest places to go off campus. It's definitely a great time!
Food and Dining The food at Christopher Newport University is good, I can't complain. They have many vegetarian and vegan options, so no one will go hungry. Their food is not homemade but it's certainly better than anything you can find in a high school cafeteria.
Dorm Life Most, if not all, of the dormitories have been built in the past couple of years. If accepted into the Presidential Leadership Program and put in quest housing, microwaves and mini fridges can be found in the dorm rooms. There are no hall bathrooms in the CNU dorms, but when you reach your senior year at Christopher Newport you have the opportunity for a hall kitchen in their brand new dorm Warwick.
Academic Rigor There is a good amount of reading involved for each class and students are expected to do their best in every subject, whether it be for their intended major or simply to fill a requirement for the liberal learning program CNU holds.
Tips for prospective students Don't be afraid to ask for help! There are professors and current students waiting to help you with anything you may need or have questions about!
In three sentences Christopher Newport University is an amazing, up-in-coming school that not only offers a friendly environment to students but has top of the line facilities that allow students to learn to their fullest capacity. CNU is filled with professors, most of which hold the highest degree in their field of study, that are passionate about both their field of study and sharing knowledge with students and are ready to aid the students and work with them in any way they can. With amazing professors, top of the line facilities, and an open heart Christopher Newport is on its way to becoming one of the top schools in Virginia, if not the nation.

Categories Comments Campus Safety You can walk around campus at anytime of day or night and feel safe on campus it's one of the things I love best about CNU it's like it's own little bubble.
Greek Life It's has a small gathering but they are seen all over campus and they are really nice.
Clubs and Activities Lots to choose from and if you don't have one get a few kids together and form a new one it's really easy.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Noland Trail. FIND it freshman year you won't regret it. It's a beautiful five mile trail.
What to do for fun Go to Cab events, join a club, go to sporting events, join Greek life. There is always something going on, on campus and if you can't find something to do on campus there always the movie theaters, shopping malls, and some clubs that are really close to campus that you can go to.
Food and Dining Food here is average, it's only bad if you choose to eat the same thing every day. You have to learn what you like and go to both dinning halls not just one to get a variety.
Dorm Life So much fun, be sure to bond with your freshman hall because those kids could become your best friends in college I know mine are.
Academic Rigor Classes are challenging but if you study and do your homework your professors won't let you fail.
Tips for prospective students Don't spend all your time doing Area of Inquires your first two years on campus if you know your major dive right in and save some fun classes for those last semesters on campus.
In three sentences It is a beautiful, safe campus. That has excellent professors who wish to help their students succeed. The campus is small enough to know many people but also big enough to disappear into if that's what you really want.

Categories Comments What to do for fun The Campus Activities Board is always putting something on for the students. There are so many clubs as well to join and become apart of. There is definitely always something to do.
Food and Dining The food options within the DSU , as well as Einstein's are great. The normal dining halls Commons and Regattas also have great diversity of food options.
Dorm Life The dorms are some of the best dorms I saw when I was touring campus. The quality is higher than the private university my sister goes to. They are great facilities that are kept clean.
Academic Rigor The classes are hard enough to challenge you. In some cases the classes may be harder than you think you can do. But the professors are all willing to help you succeed.
Tips for prospective students You have to work hard, but it is worth it. Don't give up on yourself because the people here will never give up on you.
In three sentences It is an amazing campus. The people are so excepting and truly care for the students. The programs that are offered are incredible opportunities.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Police patrol every night. You need an escort, just call the CNU police department.
Clubs and Activities Too many to name
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There's the say Hi to peole tradition (no one really says hi to you but feel free to make your appearance kniwn :D). Once you graduate, you throw a penny they give you your first year into the fountain in the Great Lawn which symbolizes success in your future.
Bang for the buck Apply, apply, apply, APPLY for scholarships! The school only offers scholarships for PLP and Honors students. It's an expensive school and they'll do the best they can to help you pay. As far as academics go, it's worth the money.
What to do for fun There are plenty of clubs to join. The school holds lots of things to do like movies, parties, comedians, big events like FallFest. If you're looking for something different, Lazy Dayz is down the street on J Clyde Morris boulevard. It's a hookah lounge. I haven't been but I hear it's a lot of fun.
Food and Dining Dining halls are clean. Food is pretty good. French Toast sticks are amazing! :D They even have themed dinners once a month.
Dorm Life It's a damp school if you're looking for somewhere to party. Not many parties to go to unless you have the connections. Depending on where you live, the dorms are pretty clean. Janitorial staff are cleaning and weeding everyday. Very comfortable and home like. Cleaner than other dorms I've been to.
Academic Rigor Work is only hard if you make it difficult for yourself. Again I'll say, your professors are here to help. Get to know them! They're great! There are people in the library who can help you study, prepare for exams, or help you with your math homework. Use your resources.
Tips for prospective students Apply Early! That's a general rule for any college you apply for. Participate in the events they have. I watched Brave for the first time at CNU. It was wonderful. It's a good school. Your professors are there for you. The Center for Academic Success is there to help you. The Center for Career Planning can help you find a job or the right graduate college for you. Work hard, but don't forget to play hard. There isn't much to do on the weekends so remember that.
In three sentences Christopher Newport is a great school. The professors are wonderful and are willing to help you with anything. People are nice here in general.

Categories Comments Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus When you come as a freshman, you are given a lucky penny. It is your responsibility to hold on to it for four years and throw it into the fountain on the great lawn on commencement day.
What to do for fun Join a club, go to the gym, hang with friends, go out in front of the DSU and see what organization has the speakers going hammer, go to Ritas', go to the Crow's Nest and play games. Things like that.
Food and Dining Regattas' is where it's at. Always great food there, and it tends to be varied so it doesn't feel like the same old, same old. Commons, eh not a huge fan but they do have a different selection than Regattas. Either works, all have great food.
Dorm Life Almost every person is friendly and wants to hang out with others, there is always something to do if you're in the right dorms. If not, you can always go out into others dorms. It's a great feeling to say the least.
Academic Rigor The classes will make you hit the ground running in most courses. However, once you adjust to the work load, it becomes much more manageable.
Tips for prospective students Keep up the good work, it isn't entirely easy to get into the school. However, you will love it here. Do all the AP classes you can take, I was not able to personally.
In three sentences Great, fun, home feeling kind of school. Top-notch academics. Student life is great, so many clubs and organizations.

Categories Comments Campus Safety CNU Police is everywhere. Sometimes, for some students, too much so. But safety is the top priority for a lot if not all of the administration.
Greek Life Extremely active on campus. Many leadership positions are filled with Greeks, thought to be students that hold themselves to a higher standards. Homogeneity can be issue, as many students willingly fit Greek stereotypes.
Clubs and Activities If you get involved with the right organizations, your university will be exponentially impacted.
Great for these types of students Outgoing, self-starting individuals.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Upon graduation, all seniors throw a penny into our swan pond. Holding doors for people is a norm. Our University president Paul Trible is nicknamed PTrib.
Bang for the buck The access of involvement I have had is truly priceless. In my four years here I have studied abroad, served on three different executive organizational councils, raised thousands of dollars for different causes, performed in front of hundreds of people, and met many amazingly interesting people. This school is truly a hidden gem and I am excited to see the type of students, faculty, and administrators keep getting attracted to the institution.
What to do for fun Bush Gardens is right down the road, as are a couple different beaches which is great for the Summer/Fall months. There is a Campus Sponsored event every weekend which ranges from concerts to comedian performances.
Food and Dining Currently, there are two dining halls on campus. Food is not bad but choice tends to get repetitive once you've been here a couple of semesters. When the math is done on meal plans, meals are about $10 for all you can eat.
Dorm Life New students are expected to live on campus for the first three years. It is much cheaper to live off campus but dorms are extremely nice. Dorm life is dependent on living preferences, if you like being around other people all the time, you'll fit right in.
Academic Rigor Taking classes that truly interest you rather than easy grades is one of the most important distinctions in your college career. I suggest all take at least two business classes in order to truly balance their liberal arts degree. Classes are detail oriented, readings must be done as test will more than likely have questions from them. As long as you do the work, on time, and follow directions, your academic evaluations will reflect well.
Tips for prospective students Deciding what you want to study is crucial for your college career. Do it as soon as possible. Go over the catalog as soon as you decide to come to Christopher Newport University. As switching majors will more than likely mean that you will not graduate in four years. If you do choose a track beginning Freshman year, most will be done with their major by junior year with the Senior Seminar as the last class.
In three sentences The school is currently in an upward spiral which allows all willing students to excel. Just as the school, there are many organizations forming that are up and coming. The experience is heavily dependent on the student, however, there is an air professional aspiration around the university.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are CNU police everywhere! They make sure we are safe above everything else. There is also a police station right across the street that is specified for CNU students. This campus emphasizes our safety. Also, the students value and honor this. We can leave our phones and ids and computers on the table and no one will take them. I feel safe and secure on this campus and I know no one will hurt me.
Greek Life Greek life is huge on campus. Every time I walk across campus I always see someone that is a part of Greek Life. It is not like a typical college, but more like a family. They welcome recruits and refuse to haze or embarrass any of their members. Everyone that I have talked to talks highly of Greek Life and says it is the best decision they ever made.
Clubs and Activities As small as CNU is, we have 200 organizations to chose from. They are all student run and are very popular among the students. We also have a lot of sports and christian organizations that lift people up. The clubs and organizations are open to new members and welcome them with open arms.
Great for these types of students Christopher Newport is a great school to attend if you love small school environments, the feeling of family, good education, and social interaction. You will never be bored here and you will make the best friends that truly care about your growth as a person and in school.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus As a freshman, we are given a penny during our honor convocation that we are expected to keep. On graduation day, we are supposed to throw our pennies in the fountain as we make our way to the ceremony. In becoming a captain, it is assumed that you will smile, wave, and hold the door open for anyone you see. This makes the atmosphere so much better and relaxing.
Bang for the buck CNU is a beautiful campus with great people that surround it. The atmosphere and students make it wonderful. I have not heard one bad thing about this campus or the atmosphere. I feel as though I am getting a tip top education and get to have a good view in the meantime. I feel so lucky and blessed to call Christopher Newport University my new home for the next four years!
What to do for fun CNU emphasizes students getting acclimated to the college life. We have a student organization, CAB, that puts activities together to do every weekend. We also go to East Campus which is just across the street and hang out at Panera, Moe's or Tropical smoothie. But, one of the most popular things is going to just spend time in the dorm room with friends and get to know each other better. There is never a dull moment on campus and because it is so small everyone is like a family and always invites people to other activities off campus.
Food and Dining The food here is stellar. We have themed dinners and lunches and the dining staff makes us feel like we're having a home cooked meal. Although nothing is better than mama's cooking, the dining room comes pretty close!
Dorm Life Dorm life is nothing less than fabulous. I have made life long friends in the matter of months. We respect each other, support each other, love each other, and most importantly encourage each other. The dorms are also state-of-the-art. We are lucky to have fairly new dorms that are well kept and look nice.
Academic Rigor The rigor here at CNU is challenging. Teachers expect you to do the assignments and they grade accordingly. They challenge you and hold you to yout highest potential. I have yet to come across a professor that gives an easy grade. I have to work hard for it!
Tips for prospective students If you want to come to CNU be prepared to get involved! This school highly stresses involvement on and off campus! It is a great school and the professors really care about your progression and success, but it doesn't come easy. Be willing to work and go outside of your comfort zone. You won't be disapointed you chose Christopher Newport University as your new home.
In three sentences Going to CNU has been one of the best decisions I've ever made. The atmosphere is welcoming and embracing and everyone reaches out to help get you involved. I could not have picked a better school to give me the liberal education, community service, and social interaction that I need to succeed.

Categories Comments What to do for fun It is crucial that students become involved on campus. There are many greek organizations, as well as clubs and the campus activities board. The campus activities board puts on events such as movie screenings, dance parties, and game nights for the students. Most of the CNU population is involved in some sort of a club or organization, though for fun students also go to Huntington Beach and Virginia Beach. William and Mary, Old Dominion University, and VCU are also reasonably close to Christopher Newport, and so a lot of students will spend the weekend visiting friends at other schools.
Food and Dining The food at Christopher Newport University is like normal college food. The staff working in the dining halls are always cheerful and excited to see students. They work very hard to make meals that every student will enjoy, and they accomodate those students with food allergies. Personally, I find breakfast and brunch to be the best meals of the day!
Dorm Life The residence halls at Christopher Newport University are wonderful. Most of the residence halls are newer and in very nice condition. Each hall has a resident advisor who is always there to help and assist in any way possible. The rooms are a decent size and bathrooms are connected to each room, so there is no trouble of using a hall bathroom.
Academic Rigor Christopher Newport University is often underestimated because it is a smaller school. However, the academics at CNU are phenomenal. It is not a matter of just going to class and studying the night before for a test, but instead students have to prepare ahead of time and invest a large amount of time into their studies. The Trible Library is often packed with students working on homework, projects, or studying for tests. The professors are also very helpful and are willing to meet even outside of their office hours to help in any way they can.
Tips for prospective students For prospective students, I would suggest visiting Christopher Newport University or even doing an over night stay to understand and feel the campus chemistry. If you are a student that has already been accepted to Christopher Newport University and plan on attending, the one thing that I cannot stress enough is to get involved with clubs, organizations, and activities on campus!
In three sentences Christopher Newport University is the perfect school if you are looking for a sense of community. It is a home away from home due to everyone's welcoming and enthusiatic attitudes. Students and professors are happy and excited to be at Christopher Newport University, and there is a great feeling of acceptance among the student body.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus is extremely safe. I never question my safety on campus.
Greek Life The social greeks are evolving, with two fraternities and a soroity being added in the past year and a half. There are also Service Greeks in addition to Social Greeks.
Clubs and Activities There is absolutely something for everyone. I'm a part of the Quidditch team, the writing club, the DDR club, a sketch comedy group, and a Co-ed service fraternity. There really is such a wide variety of organizations that it's difficult to not be involved.
Great for these types of students It's great for anyone who isn't looking to major in math... the Mathematics department is really the only department that's really lacking through and through.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The great thing about CNU is that it's in the middle of a campus cultural revolution. We are currently in the process of making new traditions for the school, and every one's invited to be involved.
Bang for the buck I'd say that it's totally worth it for an in-state tuition. Out of state may be a little pricy though.
What to do for fun There might not be much on the surface because CAB (the campus activities board) seems to dominate everything, but once you get beyond that, there's lots to be found. Lots of campus groups put on shows, and there's lots to do with the various organizations that you can join.
Food and Dining The dining halls are fairly standard, but Einstein's, Discovery Grill, and the shops in the Village all have delicious food.
Dorm Life The on-campus housing is absolutely fantastic! You're almost guaranteed to have a kitchen after your Freshman year, and the rooms themselves are very comfortable and welcoming.
Academic Rigor I'm in a very reading-heavy major, so it's all about reading and making sure that you understand what you're reading.
Tips for prospective students Learn time management quickly, and if you ever have trouble, don't be afraid to ask for help from a tutor.
In three sentences CNU is a fantastic place with great academics, excellent facilities, and a welcoming atmosphere. Everyone feels involved in making the school all it can be, which is a unique opportunity to help develop the school's atmosphere, personality, and reputation. There are also excellent opportunities for extracurriculars, including sports clubs, academic organizations, Greek life, and service organizations.

Greek Life greek life is great here.
Clubs and Activities There is clubs for anyone from disney fanatics to people interested in dance. There is something for everyone
Great for these types of students Great for students interested in leadership and community service.
What to do for fun There is plenty to do around here such as go to the beach or to Busch Gardens.
Food and Dining The dining could be better. They do have good lunches though.
Dorm Life Dorm life is great. The RA's are wonderful and the facilities are great. It has the best dorms I've ever seen.
Tips for prospective students It is everything it says it is. It is a beautiful and inviting home.

Categories Comments Clubs and Activities There are over 200 different clubs with new ones being formed daily
Food and Dining There are many options during every meal and the food is good and feels home made.
Dorm Life The residence halls are fairly new and everyone on the hall is willing to help you get situation.
Academic Rigor The Academics at CNU is a hard or as easy as you make it.
Tips for prospective students Choose the college and campus that is right for you; don't just going with the name-brand school. Choose the school that makes you happy because you will most likely be there for the next 4 years.
In three sentences Christopher Newport University is a wonderful college to attend for all different disciplines. Everyone, professors, students, and facility members, care so much about the students and will go out of their way to help you if you ask. The campus is beautiful and ever growing in technology and resources.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There are many clubs on campus. Coloring clubs, film clubs, karate clubs, you name it and there is probably a group interested. There are also several museums close by that are free to college students.
Food and Dining Dining halls are an adjustment after living at home. It sure isnt your mama's cooking, but there is variety and you wont go hungry. Eating right can be a challenge. Know your options and be prepared for the temptation to eat french fries every day for lunch. There are restaurants around campus, but eating out every day or even every week can be expensive. I try and save it for special occasions.
Dorm Life I love the dorm life here! Living with a room mate, while an adjustment allows you to learn to co exist with other people as well as keep a clean and organized room. These skills will cary over when you live on your own in years to follow.
Academic Rigor Classes at CNU should all be taken seriously. While some are more difficult than others, all classes are important in completing a well rounded education with experience in all areas of inquiry.
Tips for prospective students Freshman year can be tough, don't get discouraged if you find it difficult to get settled first semester; chances are you will completely change your friend group after the first few months of school. Always go to class and take gen eds seriously because believe it or not, they do affect your GPA.
In three sentences Christopher Newport University is a small yet friendly institution where small classes and personal interactions are valued in the classroom. The dorms are spacious and comfortable and the buildings are all beautifully designed. The teachers as well as the staff are friendly, helpful and inviting.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There hasn't been any incidents I know of in the past 3 and a half years I've been here.
Greek Life I am not part of Greek Life but the people I know who are look very very happy
Clubs and Activities Yay they exist!
Great for these types of students Students who like having the college life available to them but not in their face.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There's a big statue of Christopher Newport and it is supposedly anatomically incorrect because the statue has a hand but Christopher Newport allegedly had a hook.
Bang for the buck I am learning a lot but, being a small college, the selection of classes isn't as diverse. For example there is no exercise science course or kinesiology.
What to do for fun There's a mall nearby as well as a theatre. CAB holds events on campus every once in a while and there are performances always going on in the Ferguson Center.
Food and Dining It's good food but there isn't as much selection as there might be on a larger campus. There's sushi though!
Dorm Life Again, East Campus is amazing. Every once in a while there's someone playing their music too loud but the RA's are very helpful and it usually gets sorted out
Academic Rigor Depends on the course but it shouldn't come as a surprise that lower level classes are going to be relatively easier while the upper level classes really make you think.
Tips for prospective students Try to stay on campus, the East Campus Apartments are the way to go.
In three sentences Christopher Newport University is a very supportive school. The faculty are encouraging and helpful and the classes are small so you can get all of the help you need. The campus itself is lively and full of wonderful people.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus is constantly buzzing from 8 am to 8 pm, however, after 8 or 9 at night the campus starts to quiet down. I always feel safe on campus because often times on my way home I see familiar faces.
Greek Life As a member of Greek Life I love it on this campus. It is warm and inviting to all members and to non-greeks on the campus. Unlike the reputation it may earn, Greek life is uplifting and gives many leadership opportunities.
Clubs and Activities The different clubs and activities on the CNU campus are both diverse and full of opportunities for involvement. Many organizations are very welcoming and excited to grow.
Great for these types of students CNU is great for students who enjoy small classes and a small town kind of feel in the sense that everyone knows everyone and you are always running into people you know.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus On campus there are not too many unusual traditions but as the school grows and becomes older I am sure there will be more.
What to do for fun For fun there are tons of local theaters, bowling alleys, and restaurants. Many people go to on-campus events as well.
Food and Dining Food and dining options at CNU are somewhat lacking. However, Brunch at Regattas on Saturdays and Sundays is really good.
Dorm Life Dorm life is so much fun especially freshman year. You will find your halls all have an open door policy where kid leave there doors open so you can feel like an open hall.
Academic Rigor The academic rigor, like any college, differs from professor to professor.
Tips for prospective students I suggest that prospective students really get a feel for campus and sit in the library and Einstein's and decide if you like the atmosphere because it is where you will spend many days.
In three sentences CNU is a great campus with many opportunities and places to find your home.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Very safe place with high campus police presence makes it comforting to live here.
Greek Life Strong Greek life with a whole section of Greek campus. Very tightly knit societies. Also include other Greek honor societies and Christian groups. Big Greek organizations include: Kappa Delta Rho, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Alpha Sigma Alpha, Phi Mu, Pi Kappa Phi, Tau Delta Upsilon, and others.
Clubs and Activities Anything you could think of, from fishing to dance to martial arts. If it isn't here, you can start your own and get support.
Great for these types of students All. This is not your typical party school, but there are parties VERY close by. But anyone who wants to go to a supportive, close knit university where they can have the experience of a lifetime: this is it.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Every student is given a penny in their freshman year with a story (it's a secret). Senior year, it is thrown into a fountain for good luck. Oh, and there's a mutual trust. Among everyone.
Bang for the buck Average price for state university, but the faculty, grounds, and atmosphere definitely make set this school apart from the rest.
What to do for fun It's Hampton Roads. You are 20 minutes from shopping at Colonial Williamsburg outlets and 20 minutes from the beach with everything in between.
Food and Dining No cafeteria food here. The dining staff is friendly and cooks everything instead of bringing in caterers. When this idea was brought up, students protested in favor of our current system, which is why we still have the best food around.
Dorm Life Hands down the nicest dorms in Virginia. You have options from dorms to apartments and they are clean, furnished, and most are brand new.
Academic Rigor The coursework is challenging in a way that grows you and allows you to develop yourself and ask questions.
Tips for prospective students Pack light. You won't need most of the stuff you think you will. Enjoy your friends. When you reach senior year, the friends you make early on will be the ones you stick with. Be open to meeting new people. But perhaps most importantly: NETWORK. This will land you a job when you graduate.
In three sentences CNU IS AMAZING. The social atmosphere has created an astounding network between students and professors while keeping it fun and interactive. Academically, the professors and staff are top-of-the-line; they really care about the students and are constantly available for support.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you like a small, beautiful campus with friendly people and a great education you should come here. It will be well worth your time and money.
Tips for prospective students If you are all about partying, go to a different college. You can find some parties but it is not the party scene. Also if you are homophobic, go to a different college because being a liberal arts college, there are many gay students who aren't afraid to express themselves, which I love.
Bang for the buck I am an out of state student so I pay out of state tuition to attend here. If I wasn't getting a top dollar education here and if I didn't love it here I would not pay this much money to go to a college. I think that they make it worth your time and money to attend here.
Am enjoying being here I really enjoy the beautiful campus and the students here. It makes it feel like my second home and everyone is friendly. The atmosphere is great and since it is small it feels homey.
Am learning a lot I am definitely getting a great education here! The professors are very intelligent and have high degrees so they know what they are teaching. You can't skip class and expect to know what is going on. A lot of the professors know if you are missing and they try to make it interesting so that you want to go to class. I feel like I am getting the best education here!

Categories Comments Tips for prospective students Make sure that this is the place that you want to be and have a positive attitude going in as a new student.
Bang for the buck Christopher Newport University has a private university feel at a public school price i do however feel that more money is wasted on building and expanding than being used on the students.
Am enjoying being here I enjoy the atmosphere around Christopher Newport University. I do however wish that it was a little more diverse.
Am learning a lot Being a student at Christopher Newport University has taught me a lot. The way that the work is set up really makes me search for the answers myself and take responsibility for my own actions and learning.

Categories Comments Campus Safety there are always campus police on campus and around the area. the police station is located directly across from the ferguson center on warwick blvd. cnu also uses and alert system of texts, emails, and announcements to ensure the information needed to know is spread around quickly and efficiently.
Bang for the buck cnu is in the middle for the price range around $18,000 for a public school. the liberal arts based education is much different than most public universities though, but provides a strong, all around education of many subjects not just one, mainstream view of the students major.
What to do for fun there are always people outside on the lawns playing frisbee, throwing football, or relaxing in the grass. there is consistently nice weather here in newport news making it a great place to be if you like the outdoors. we have the freeman center with a brand new, top of the class weight room and workout facilities, auxiliary gyms, and cardio rooms. the nolan trail is also available to go on walks or run on, and provides nice views along the james river.
Food and Dining there are many food options on campus, with two dining halls which are very nice places to eat. both are buffet style and provide very good food, with a variety of foods throughout the week. there are open grills, the healthy haven, and a sandwich or wrap bar in both. there is also a chik fil a's and panera on campus, along with several other small restaurants located along the cnu village.
Dorm Life cnu is said to have some of the top residential halls in the country. we have two brand new dorms being built at the moment and to be ready for students in the next two years. these help develop a very strong community which you can find all around campus.
Academic Rigor the classes are made to challenge you. based on a liberal learning core, you will get a variety of courses required to fulfill the liberal arts requirements. this helps create a stronger, well rounded and well educated student.
Tips for prospective students expect the most from everyone around you. the professors are willing to work and provide any help you may need. also be proud of your school, especially here where cnu is a competitive, yet successful school in all areas.
In three sentences this is a growing campus with new buildings and a great atmosphere. there is a great involvement of the students and faculty on campus and in the community. all around strong campus with great academics, athletics and service to the community.

Tips for prospective students Prospective students hoping to go into a higher institution of learning should apply for a scholarship a day. In three sentences The campus of Christopher Newport University, is one of the most beautiful campuses that I've seen yet. I am excited about pursuing an higher education from their top professors in the particular field. Being able to continue my education at this school is an honor and privilege.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Walk the perimeter of the campus at 2:00 AM - I DARE YOU! Check out the homeless in the 24 hr Post Office near Chick Fil-A. Meet the alcoholics and the meth-heads across the street at the convenience stores as soon as it's dark. Check out the pretty blue lights on the rape boxes. Then go through the outer lots and look at the shattered glass (Really? $250 to park a car only to have my windows broken twice? This place sucks (google the CNU police log). The only police presence is the constant dorm room sweeps by police to assist the RAs in honor code violations and to issue parking tickets. In 2 years of living on campus, expect police to randomly enter your room 2x per week - or about 100 times total - this is par for everyone. Expect 2-3 undeserved honor code violations and 2-3 tickers from the police. This school is also FAMOUS for issuing tickets DAYS AFTER an alleged event. Expect to find a post-dated ticket on your windshield every so often because a car matching your description (one that also has 4 wheels you can assume), was parked improperly 2 days ago. I guess the police was too busy then going through student desk drawers while they are in class. Oh the joy of being screwed daily at the Garden in the Ghetto.
Greek Life It looks good, so the president has allowed this to occur under his honor code view. In other words, Greek life is a hollow shell of what it is everywhere else.
Clubs and Activities Yeah right.
Great for these types of students Northern VA Republicans with self-esteem issues, low grades, and with cars to commute home to Mom and Dad on weekends. Parents. get used to it! They'll be living home soon anyway since the placement and graduation rates are dismal at the Garden in the Ghetto.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Tradition? How about honor code violations. This school hands these out like confetti (google it and DO some reading of the NEGATIVE REVIEWS over the years). MOST students (not a few, rare examples) get these on their record and then are unable to transfer out to a better school due to being labeled a disciplinary problem. I earned my honor code violation when my parents visited me for my birthday and I came back with a cupcake with a single, kid's candle in it. The RA did a room check while I was in class, opened the desert bag and, next thing I knew, I was given 40 hours of community service, a fine of $200, and I had to write a 15 page essay on the dangers of keeping flammable materials in a dorm room. Needless to say, my parents weren't too happy. Just fully expect the same BS since most people get violations for stuff that they have no clue about. A person 3 rooms away walking in with, allegedly, the smell of beer on his breath (he was 21) earned about 10 people violations for being in the viscinity of alcohol. Seriously, most of the people who were charged and (always 100% conviction rate) found guilty had been asleep for hours and didn't even associate with the guy.
Bang for the buck C'mon, if your going here, you didn't get into any real schools or you just want to do nothing for 4 years. Let's be real, the Provost made national headlines (google: provost CNU us news and world ranking AND hiring) by PROHIBITING the hiring of a faculty member who would graduate from a school like CNU - 'nuff said.
What to do for fun Leave campus and go home. Better yet, check out the homeless and the winos at the convenience stores across the street in both directions. Faculty head toward the strip club down the street near the bridge (a few CNU students dance there), while everyone else goes to Denbeigh just up to road to get hooked up.
Food and Dining Very hip names and some eye candy (healthy salads and scones with a coffee bar in the library - oh joy!). In reality, the food is mandatory, monotonous and muck as soon as the parents and visitors leave. Trible Trivia: Where did the person get arrested for exposing himself? At the coffee shop across the street from campus. Recognize the building? That's right, the whole nation saw the dorm there being evacuated when they found an IN DORM suspected METH LAB (google it).
Dorm Life Newport News? I wouldn't allow my dog to lift a leg there, much less want to go there! That seems to be the general response to the Garden in the Ghetto. On Campus Meth Lab reports and arrests (Google it), CONSTANT crime, a president who wants to force bible study on the fraternities and has faculty supposedly stealing newspapers (Google it), and a dry campus leaves room for OODLES of trouble. CNU girls are known for putting out (check the reviews) and for being below average (again, reviews). 60+% of everyone leaves to go home on the weekends making this a commuter campus with a residency problem. No alcohol on campus means people drive off campus daily to party which accounts for the student deaths on the road.
Academic Rigor Christopher Michael Who? Kind of says it all. NO ONE outside of the DC beltway and Northern VA has heard of the place. In other words, your response from graduating from here, IF you graduate from here, will be completely underwhelming for the rest of your life. Even then, the only people welcome here are bible-thumping republicans from northern VA and the beltway: hardly a large market segment to chose from.
Tips for prospective students CNU accepts 60% of applicants: (4,000x.6=2,400) but more than 60% accepted go elsewhere. Of the 1,200 students who do end up in the Garden in the Ghetto, only 13% (Yikes!) graduate in 4 years (169 out of 1400 freshman). Of these 169, only 8% had jobs in their field within 2 years (11 students TOTAL out of 1,400 freshman). In other words, RUN - don't walk - AWAY from this non-stop construction pit.
In three sentences Christopher Newport Who? Never heard of it! Only 13% of full-time students graduate in 4 years... now that sucks!

Categories Comments What to do for fun Campus Activity Board puts on some really great things, parties, movies, games, and free stuff.
Food and Dining The theme meals are great, overall the food is really good but after awhile you start missing food from home.
Academic Rigor The dfficulty of the class really depends on the professor; overall though, the professors try to push you. And its true what they say, 'you get out of the class what you put into it.
Tips for prospective students Try to get involved with PLP or the Honors Program. This will not only give you scholarships but housing priority as well as priority registration.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I've never been concerned for my safety and I take midnight walks.
Greek Life Wouldn't know, sadly.
Clubs and Activities They send out an email every day of probably at least 5 things going on around campus for you to be aware of, and that's only the half of it.
Great for these types of students Preps and athletes. There, I said it.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The penny. I guarantee you will lose it. And you will feel bad, no matter how stupid you thought it was when they gave it to you.
Bang for the buck When I hear about class life in other colleges, it makes me really glad I went to a smaller school. The teachers are all really friendly and willing to help.
What to do for fun There are so many clubs, you almost don't know where to start. Also, 15 min from Bush Gardens and not super far from the Beach.
Food and Dining Great food, but a little repetitive.
Dorm Life Live in Santoro. I know it looks sketchy, but it's connected to the food, and all the cool people live there.
Academic Rigor They're really serious about the liberal learning core, but I've heard exploring all the different areas keeps you sane in the midst of stressing about your major. If you're in Honors, you don't have to deal with the liberal learning curriculum, keep that in mind.
Tips for prospective students Apply for the Honors Program or the PLP program. The more you handle yourself, the better off you'll be. Hang out with the people on your hall.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus is surrounded by a pretty rough city but the Campus PD does a great job of keeping you safe. Nothing too serious has happened in my few years here, and I rarely feel unsafe. Countless safety measures are implemented by the university.
Greek Life Decent.
Clubs and Activities If you are an active student, you will be fine. Most clubs are religious oriented but it isn't too difficult to find a group that isn't.
Great for these types of students Very active.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus It's not a very old school, so there are not many traditions. But the student body has the opportunity to make those traditions.
Bang for the buck As a student at CNU, you are spoiled. The tuition is pretty low for what you get and very low compared to other state schools.
What to do for fun Plaza Azteca, Trampoline gym close by, CAB, decent Greek Life, etc.
Food and Dining Terrible. But after your freshmen year you don't need a meal plan.
Dorm Life Gorgeous dorms. We are constantly winning awards for having beautiful dorms. After your freshmen year you can get an on campus apartment. No hall bathrooms in any building on campus!
Tips for prospective students Buy a pair of rainboots! Flattest campus on Earth!
In three sentences This university has stellar professors and great tuition prices. The campus is beautiful, but the city itself is not an ideal college town. The university really promotes a friendly atmosphere.

Categories Comments Campus Safety No random person can just walk in to campus. There are police officers in each building at night so if any wanted to try to get in there they would be in for a rough time. The area police takes the protection of CNU students very seriously.
Greek Life From what I have heard it is excellent. The dorms are incredible and there is always some sort of function going on.
Clubs and Activities So many clubs, I cant even begin to name them all. The only problem is that when you look at the list of clubs you will start saying which ones you want to join and then realize you've said yes to about 30 clubs.
Great for these types of students Something for absolutely everyone!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus You get a lucky penny when you first get on campus. You keep that penny until graduation and it is supposed to help guide you.
Bang for the buck If you look at the campus you would guess this a $40,000 plus school. Being only in the mid $20,000 range it is an incredible deal!
What to do for fun SO MUCH! CNU is a make it what you will kind of campus. There is so much going on with sports, clubs, club sports, and so much more. There are concerts and appearances that CNU students get incredible discounts for. Just last year a $400 dollar general admission ticket was sold to CNU students for $7. There is so much to do at this campus.
Food and Dining There is a plethora of options. You can get Chik-Fil-A or go the Regetta's which is essentially an all you can eat buffet. You can grab some Ice Cream or even go to the restaurants or stores across the street if you want something specific.
Dorm Life There is not a university in the state that can compare to their Palace Like Dorms as described by the Princeton Review
Academic Rigor Classes will challenge you but the teachers are there to see you succeed. They will know you by name and they will be happy to focus on you if you come to them during their office hours.
Tips for prospective students Be sure to check out the campus because it will captivate you. I would recommend going to CNU before your other visits because this school sets a very high standard. Also don't believe the hoopla about CNU not being at the academic standards of say VT or VCU. CNU is ranked 3rd best in the state behind only UVA and William and Mary. Excellent school.
In three sentences A beautiful campus, Christopher Newport University offers top of the line facilities that hold small volume classes giving the student a chance to be full active. The dorms have an excellent set up and are spacious. Free tuition is offered in the massive library in this private school quality establishment that only asks for a public school fee.

Categories Comments Greek Life Greek Life is something I have taken part in this past semester and it has only been wonderful since. My sister have been so welcoming and it is a fantastic culture to become a part of. All of the greek organizations on my campus get along and accept each other even when not a part of their own organization. I think that is one great quality that CNU Greek Life possesses.
Clubs and Activities There are so many options for extra curricular activities. It is hard to not be a part of something on campus. From intramural sports to the coloring club, there is something for everyone.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Having graduation on the great lawn is a new tradition started this past year. It is a tradition that everyone can picture for their future because the great lawn is something we walk by or across everyday at school.
Bang for the buck The price for school has increased every year with the current construction on campus.
What to do for fun The Campus Activities Board hosts many activities on campus that happen throughout the week from movie nights on the weekend to springfest in the spring, there is always a fun activity to take part in on campus.
Food and Dining I work for the dining services on campus and the food and service is wonderful. There is always a variation of food in the dining halls and many options to select from on campus.
Dorm Life I lived off campus ever year attending CNU and commuted from home my freshman year. However, not living on campus is one thing I regret because I lost that experience of the dorm life.
Academic Rigor I feel that I have been challenged in every aspect of my education. It has not been an easy road but I have learned things I never expected to learn from the classes I have been enrolled in.
In three sentences Christopher Newport University has offered me great opportunities for my future. I have been provided with many leadership and academic advancements. CNU is a great school for creating a great future.

Categories Comments Campus Safety CNU's security is very up to date with the ability to call in text or email a problem or complaint. Campus is also patrolled frequently by officers and students who work at resident desk at night.
Clubs and Activities Clubs and other student groups are very fun and exciting as well as flexible. If you miss a meeting or two because you had to study or you just want to try it out there is no concrete commitment if you choose not to make one.
Great for these types of students This school is great for student who are willing to converse with other students and be involved on campus as well as stay on top of their academics.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is a tradition where a penny is given to you during a freshmen initiation ceremony and you throw it in a well once you have graduated.
Bang for the buck CNU is a little on the expensive side when it come to living expensive if you decide to live on campus (which is not an option for those who do not live in the area), but many precautions are taken to ensure students get the best out of their experience.
What to do for fun CNU is all about getting to know everyone and so you are encouraged to interact with student in your dorm, hall, and other residence halls. Many events at CNU are held and that is a favorite for student to enjoy and converse with one another as well as just hanging, talking, watching movies, playing video games, working on fun project or, going to dinner. Joining clubs or sport teams and other social group on campus have also been very fun part of CNU for students.
Food and Dining In the primary dining hall there is a lot to choose from and many things are freshly prepared but it can sometimes get old after a while. There are restaurants outside of the dining hall like Chick-fila and Discovery cafe which are also an option at CNU to eat which is often a choice many students.
Dorm Life Dorm life at CNU has been very fun and exciting for me personally. I have made many close and long lasting friendships. At CNU we have a person who lives on the hall with us called an RA or Resident Assistant who makes sure any concerns or problems we may have are resolved in calm and safe manner. The dorms physically look very nice and have a very homey feel not to mention the refrigerator and micro-wave as well as a wardrobes, beds, and, dressers.
Academic Rigor Academics at times can be demanding but manageable. Be sure to use your time wisely and plan it out! Always ask for help from a teacher, fellow student, or tutor if you are struggling with anything from time management, studying, or, to an assignment/project. They are their to help you learn!
Tips for prospective students If you are looking for a school where you like to be involved and are willing to make lots of friends this is definitely the place for you. As far as academics be sure to stay on top of them along with the other activities you may choose to involve yourself in. Professors are very flexible and will help you in any way possible you just have to ask!!
In three sentences I am very pleased with the small size of this college because it has created a strong community where everyone is socially accepted, not to a positive atmosphere. The professor are very dependable and helpful. I am a student that lives on campus and I must say it's a life experience you will never forget

Categories Comments Food and Dining The food is also great, though repetitive. There are multiple options every day including gluten-free, salad, cereal, ice cream, sandwiches, and much more! There are about 5 little places to eat and 2 dining halls and I've always found something I've wanted to eat.
Dorm Life Being on campus is great, and because it is a requirement for at least a few years, you will be surrounded by many other students all the time. The dorms are rated very high and are really comfortable to live in. You and your roommate will share a mini-fridge, microwave, your own heating and A/C controls, and a bathroom with your suitemates (aka no floor bathrooms).
Academic Rigor The classes will be challenging, some more than most, but that is what college is all about. The key is to get to know your teachers, be respectful, and set certain days or periods of time aside for homework/studying.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus is really safe. If there is a major problem then the campus and city police are right on it very quickly
Greek Life Greek life is great. The fraternities and sororities really do a lot on and off campus to help the community. And they also know how to have a good time.
Great for these types of students This campus is great for all kind of students because there is a little bit of everything to be offered on campus.
Bang for the buck Including room and board, the overall cost for in-state is about 21,000. But with all the buildings being very new and the excellent academic fields, you will get your money's worth.
What to do for fun All of the sporting activities are very exciting to watch. We also have a student lounge on the second floor of the David Student Union where you can have a little fun with the karoake machine.
Food and Dining The food is amazing. I have no complaints what so ever!
Dorm Life Dorm life is great. It is a great opportunity to live on your own and meet new people you may have never met if you stayed off of campus.
Academic Rigor The academic rigor at Christopher Newport University is very difficult. However, the professors are there to answer any and every question you may have.
Tips for prospective students Go to your professor's office hours. They are there to help you and they most certainly will.
In three sentences I love the my school. It is such a diverse group of students and faculty and it is easy to get involved in multiple activities. If you like a small school with a great education and great social life, then CNU is the school for you!

Categories Comments What to do for fun There are many sporting events to go to. Groups from CNU will always have events to attend to. The Ferguson center has famous groups perform as well and students receive a sizable student discount.
Food and Dining Sundays are usually the worst days. But the rest of the week there is a variety of options, including a mongolian grill.
Dorm Life CNU is a dry campus but that doesn't mean you can't have fun. CNU always makes sure there is something to do during the week or on the weekends. The RA's also plan fun activities for the dorms to participate in.
Academic Rigor CNU is not easy. Students are expected to manage their time in order to finish all necessary work. The ratio of students to professors makes it more efficient for students to understand and complete their work.
Tips for prospective students While in high school learn how to take notes that are effective for yourself. Also begin to make good communicative relationships with your teachers so it will carry over into your college academic career. Practicing how to manage your time will also be essential at CNU.
In three sentences Christopher Newport University is on the rise to become more prestigious academically. It offers a busy campus life and numerous majors for students to eventually be successful in their future jobs.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus is really safe but try to avoid police officers. Some of them are jerks. If an incident occurs, you will be notified immediately through text, email, and apparently now they call you too. I always went walking alone at night due to long hours at the library and never felt afraid.
Great for these types of students It's great for students who like to walk around since parking is insanely difficult. I'd suggest not bringing a car because you'll be able to walk to most places---maybe just befriend someone who does have a car in case you do need to go somewhere off campus.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Ferguson is said to be haunted (you'll actually find a few places haunted near the university if you ask around), and there's a graveyard behind the upperclassmen dorm buildings.
What to do for fun Get involved with whatever club holds your interest-- martial arts, stargazing, anime, etc. CNU has a variety of club organizations (including CAB which shows a lot of movies that just came out and creative activities) and if you can't find one you like you can create your own! There are museums, a nature hike (Noland Trail), movie theaters, Bush Gardens and an hour or so away from the beach. This isn't a party school, but you can always find parties if you look for them. However, the university has strict rules about alcohol and there are serious consequences (such as being expelled) if you get caught drinking-- even if you are legal to drink.
Food and Dining The food...well, some days it's good and some days you'll think you've got food poisoning. If you have friends who are upperclassmen or have kitchens, I recommend cooking with or for them (it'll be fun too since it'll become a social event...food has a way of bonding people).
Dorm Life Residence halls are amazing, particularly the new dorm building they just built that has its own kitchen. Many of the upperclassmen (such as myself) envy the freshmen coming in because it's like a resort. Your first year at CNU is important for branching out so get to know your hall-mates. However, about roommates, make sure you make clear boundaries of what you are and are not comfortable with and respect those rules.
Academic Rigor Definitely worth your money. Classes are generally small and professors are demanding and expect you to do the work (do not slack). My advice is to also pay attention to how the professors are rated because the way you learn may clash with the way the professor teaches and they will expect you to adjust to them. I, personally, had to repeat two courses because I couldn't understand what the professor was discussing but found the topic to be clearer with another professor.
Tips for prospective students This university is constantly under construction (August 2011 when we had an earthquake many of the students thought it was construction and merely shrugged it off or didn't notice), and with all the rain it gets, flooding occurs a lot so invest in rain boots. CNU does not have a bookstore so create an amazon account ASAP-- you don't want to buy from them anyway because it's always more expensive.
In three sentences Christopher Newport University has a beautiful campus, beautiful residence halls (probably the most luxurious), and the most involved professors. The workload at this university really depends on your major, but all will be challenging. The social network you make here will help you in the future, whether it's getting a job or finding your soul mate.

Categories Comments What to do for fun I noticed nothing really. It isn't really a party school. they do try to do movies nights and things of that nature but if you want to party this is not the school.
Food and Dining I commute.
Dorm Life I commute.
Academic Rigor Very serious, very tough. But the professors are there to help you and are willing to give you help whenever they are available.
Tips for prospective students make sure you want to go here. Don't apply because the campus looks nice and there are nice buildings. Apply because you feel like it's a college that will fit you and your academic needs.
In three sentences It's great concerning academics, but anything else is quite bland and boring.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Police are always spreaded around the campus. We have the blue light emergency system located throughout campus and CNU alert systems not only for students but also for parents.
Greek Life There are many sororities and phanternties. We have panallenic, multicultural, service, and ethnic groups to choose from.
Clubs and Activities There are over 250 clubs at CNU. If you have an interest you are most definitely sure to find a club. If not you can always create one.
Great for these types of students The school is great for students who don't mind being proactive and opening there mind. This school is for those who like new experiences and a small community.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus On the week of exams we have a pancake feast. Faculty prepare for the students pancakes $3 for each student and the proceeds go to toys for tots.
Bang for the buck School cost about $20,000 and it is worth every penny. There are perks that come with the school. Many discounts on outside businesses and the weight of your degree compared to other schools.
What to do for fun For fun we play out in the great big lawn, kareokee, pool, wii, and more. There is a club called CAB that is responsible for hosting events throughout the year for the entertainment of the students. There are parties that happen through the year hosted through different clubs.
Food and Dining Food is good. We have theme dinners year round that cater to a particular holiday or ethnic food. Many occasions we have the luxury of having crab legs, shrimp, and fondu. On campus we have chick-fil-a, Starbucks, bistro, and sushi. Many other things are located on the east side of campus.
Dorm Life The dorms are spectacular. They are very spacious and as you move up in your undergraduate level the better your rooms get. There are no dorms only suits and apartments on our campus.
Academic Rigor The academics can be very challenging. It is good to be challenge by the mind to prepare for the outside world.
Tips for prospective students Every student should be prepared for heavy amounts of reading and work to be time consuming. The work load may seem easy but it can get heavy really quickly. Never fall behind and always stay on your classes.
In three sentences Christopher Newport University is a beautiful school that caters to the students needs. Every student has access to many resources like clubs, programs, research, jobs, tutoring, internships, and more. Overall on a scale of one through ten, Christopher Newport University is a nine due to the resources catering to the students.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus police is around in case you ever need them. Oddly enough, they are also very friendly.
Greek Life Personally, I am not involved in Greek life but my friends that are absolutely love their sororities or fraternities.
Clubs and Activities There are over 500 clubs, there's bound to be one that attracts you.
Great for these types of students Studious, friendly, hard-working, and fun
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus CNU has many traditions like the Penny tradition, smiling tradition and othere. Also President Trible is very open to add more.
What to do for fun There are beaches around. If you love to walk and run, there is a trail that you can use.
Food and Dining Regatta's is the number one place to go for food! Commons is great also.
Dorm Life You will love your Resident Assistant (RA) and your hall mates. Make sure you take some time to bond and make friends.
Academic Rigor Classes may be hard but there is always tutors on campus that can and will help.
Tips for prospective students Get involved! Whether its in intramural sport, clubs, Resident life, on-campus jobs, Greek Life, or Community Engagement, get involved. Study! Classes may not seem hard but they are plus, you don't want to disappoint your parents. Have fun! CNU is located in a nice area, if your tired of campus (which won't happen) visit Lion's Bridge or find some friends and go to a near by beach.
In three sentences It may be cliche to say but CNU is the nicest campus around! Everyone smiles and says hi, professors are approachable and help you out and core advisors are always there to lend a hand. It may be a small school but it has a big heart!
