Categories Comments Great for these types of students CofC is wonderful for students looking for a school that is not too big or small yet has a homey feel. Also, it is great for students looking for a good education but want to always have something to do after their school work is done.
Tips for prospective students To anyone even slightly interested in the College of Charleston, I would highly suggest you visit the school and city. I would be surprised if you did not know almost immediately whether or not Charleston is for you. Be sure to check out the many on campus organizations.
Bang for the buck The College of Charleston is an excellent school with several new buildings, knowledgeable staff, and an A+ location. The price is a little steep for out of state students but being one myself, I can say it is well worth it.
Am enjoying being here I could not imagine a better college for me. I am in love with not only the gorgeous school but also the city. There is always something fun to do in the Holy City whether it be walking down to the battery, visiting the many historical sites, or relaxing on the beach. One of the only negatives is that with so much around, it can be hard to focus on your studies.
Am learning a lot Professors at CofC are truly invested in their students. They urge students to get help during office hours and do their best to make sure you are learning the material. The majority of the courses I have taken are challenging yet interesting which is an excellent combination.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students College of Charleston is great for the student who wants to be in the city, but also does not want to feel overwhelmed. Charleston is a small city, so it has many great attractions and plenty to be involved in, but still has a homey and comfortable feel. The students at CofC are well known for having laid-back personalities and no-rush, worry free attitudes. Everyone is very friendly, and I found it easy to make friends in my dorm and in my classes.
Tips for prospective students Be sure to check out the website at Cofc.edu. Also, look at the many academics and classes that are offered. I found it very helpful to email the department head of my desired major/academic area that I wanted to study and ask questions about the program. The staff are all very friendly and willing to answer any questions. Be sure to visit the city and enjoy walking the beautiful campus of CofC as well as exploring the attractions of downtown Charleston to know if it is the kind of location you are interested in.
Bang for the buck College of Charleston is definitely a great buy. It provides excellent housing, dining, professors, and many modern buildings that are all comfortable and conveinent. There are many great organizations and clubs to be a part of as well as sports. CofC has a fantastic location in the heart of Charleston that provides its students with endless entertainment when they are not studying.
Am enjoying being here I could not have found a better school for me. I love being fifteen minutes from the beach, and I enjoy the mild winters. I love the historic sceneray and aritechture of the city as well as its true southern history and flair.
Am learning a lot The professors at CofC are willing to work with their students in any way possible to make sure they are learning the material and understand how to apply it to everyday life. Small class sizes of about 20 students per class are really helpful in providing one on one time with professors if desired. It's also helful that the professors learn every student by name. Professors are readily available via email and set office hours. Also, most of the professors are willing to meet with students outside of office hours if the student is not available to meet with them during the set hours. CofC also has a tutoring center that provides labs in Spanish and French, all mathematics through Calculus, and a writing lab. CofC also provides supplamental courses weekly for the most challeging courses, and private tutors for most other courses free to students.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students C of C is great for most everyone, especially people who like Spanish moss or want to pretend that they’re Quentin Compson. (That is to say that the campus is incredibly Southern-looking.) You will find a place where you are happy socially and educationally, I promise.
Tips for prospective students BE VERY PROACTIVE ABOUT THE ADMISSIONS PROCESS. Call the Admissions office to check in with your application every so often; ask them to go into CougarTrail to check that everything is in order. They messed up my application at first, but they were FANTASTIC about fixing it, so if you just call occasionally to make sure that things are going well, things will go well. If you need to take Physics 101/102 or Physics 111/112, take 111/112. 101/102 are supposed to be easier, but if those are the classes you choose to take, you’ll be learning from a collection of PowerPoint slides put together in a book by your professor instead of from a book put together and designed by professors and instructional designers for a major textbook publishing company. 111/112 have been very good for me. Take those classes. If you get the chance to have a class with Dr. Francis, do it. It will be one of the best experiences of your educational career.
Bang for the buck THIS IS IMPORTANT IF YOU ARE A TRANSFER STUDENT: Financial aid for the first year or so is not really easy to get, but if you look around for scholarships and harass the financial aid folks you’ll probably be able to cut the cost of attendance down. Housing for transfer students is also not easy to get for the first year, but the college has a lot of resources for off-campus living. If you’re an in-state student, the cost of attendance is fairly low; if you’re out-of-state, not so much. But it could be worse: at my former school, tuition was about $10,000 more. Because the classes are great and I’m really enjoying it here, though, it’s definitely worth it.
Am enjoying being here I’m really enjoying myself here. There are all sorts of clubs and events where you can meet people and have a good time; there are regular movie nights; there is a lot of stuff going on around Charleston. Because there are so many different clubs, it isn’t difficult to find a place where there are like-minded people with whom you get along; for instance, I’m in the Society of Physics Students and it’s wonderful, and I’m in Japanese Club and it’s really fun. In order to not make friends and enjoy yourself, you have to actively avoid people or be monumentally unpleasant, and even so you still may make a friend or two despite your best efforts.
Am learning a lot The majority of your educational experience will likely be fantastic. My professors have ranged from very good to excellent, and my classes have all been very interesting and well-taught—although, this is partly because most of my gen-ed stuff is done, and so I get to focus on what I’m really interested in. But the gen-ed classes offered are incredibly diverse, so if you shop around, you’ll find some very interesting classes taught by good professors. You will, I promise, take one or two classes that you don’t like, because the professor is less than great, or because you just can’t get into the material. This has nothing to do with C of C. This has to do with how school works.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students artsy students, musicians, athletic students, and people who enjoy living in a historic city, with THE BEACH 10 minutes away. The only downfall is not having a football team, but most of the students at CofC are fine with that, and it makes CofC unique.
Tips for prospective students My tips would be to definitely check out the campus and try to spend a weekend here. Also, really read into what your major requires. Look at the requirements for graduation as well, because CofC is a liberal arts school, there are more requirements than a different university would require.
Bang for the buck I think CofC is definitely worth coming to!
Am enjoying being here What's not to love about Charleston? From soaking up the sun in Marion Square, to walking down King street and enjoying the multitude of shops, to taking a jog down to the battery, or simply hanging out with friends among the beauty of this city..it couldn't get any better.
Am learning a lot Due to the variety of classes CofC has to offer, I have been able to take several interesting classes that not alot of people have the chance to. The professor are GREAT and are always willing to work with you. CofC also offers the Center for Student Learning in which you can get FREE tutors for anything you need help with...it is awesome. They really do want you to succeed.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students people who like history, partying, or interested in business, hospitality, or Marine BIO. It's primarily a girls school with the 70:30 ratio, works for me :)
Tips for prospective students Balance homework with partying, grades come first
Bang for the buck Charleston is a lot of fun, you are right in the middle of down town so fun is literally a block away.
Am enjoying being here Great school, beautiful girls, and awesome weather. its a great college experience. oh and does the ratio 70:30 girls to guys sound good?

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Anyone who wants to meet lots of friendly, new people! I think that every type of person can find their niche at CofC, but they may just have to search a bit. If you are outgoing and want to meet people from all walks of life, come here for sure.
Tips for prospective students Take advantage of office hours with your teachers! If you don't understand a topic covered in class, visit your teacher during their set office hours and I can almost guarantee that they will help you immensely. Also, try to get involved with at least one on campus activity, especially as a new student, and the number of friends you make will probably double instantly!
Bang for the buck Being an out of state student, this is hard to decide. For someone from South Carolina, this school is such a great deal and I would 100% recommend it! If you are out of state, getting financial aid is definitely needed in order to make it more reasonable. However, one point that puts CofC above many other schools is that teachers are the ones teaching the classes. With the exception of labs, TAs hardly ever teach classes, and if they do it is only to help out the regular teacher. With the number of opportunities available through CofC, I would definitely say it is worth the money, even if it does mean that out of state students should look for additional aid.
Am enjoying being here This school is so much fun! The classes are interesting and not too difficult to manage, and there is always something fun to do both on and off campus. There are tons of clubs and activities on campus, including intramural sports, academic clubs, and greek life. There is something for everyone for sure. Also, the city of Charleston is filled with stuff to do, from the historical aspects to the beach. Never boring for sure, plus the people are so nice!
Am learning a lot The teachers at CofC definitely are invested in their students. For the most part, they are more than willing to help with any questions or concerns their students have during class, as well as during office hours. If you spend the time going to class and seeking out your teachers for help if you are struggling with a subject, it is easy to do well and really understand the material.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students This school is great for people interested in living in a lively city and a city with tons of history. If you enjoy beautiful weather, and having tons of fun opportunities to engage in then this is the school for you.
Tips for prospective students College of Charleston is a great place to study I would recommend this school to anyone. It is a wonderful experience living in this beautiful city. The college provides many fitness options and I suggest you take full advantage of all of them. The food on campus is good, but if you live on campus and have a meal plan the options can get boring after a while.
Bang for the buck I am paying out of state tuition so I am paying an extra $6000 a semester to come here. If I were paying in state tuition it would be an even bigger bang for my buck. Especially with the many South Carolina scholarships available to resident students.
Am enjoying being here This campus is gorgeous. Living in the center of a beautiful city with great shopping, close proximity to the many beaches here, and a lot of opportunities for fitness and outdoor activities, is an amazing experience. Dorm life is nice and there are many off campus apartments that are 5-10 minutes away from campus it's perfect for those who don't want to bother having a car to care for. The down side however, is that being in the city always means there is a bad side of town, which isn't that far from campus, but for the most part the city is safe, and on campus is extremely safe.
Am learning a lot I transfered to CofC from my hometown university, University of Texas El Paso, The courses here at CofC are more challenging than UTEP but the quality of the material and the professors is far superior than UTEP. I have been challenged in all of my courses but have been very successful in all because of the interest all of my professors have taken in my performance in class. The professors truly care about you and want you to succeed.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Great for any type of student really. Goes everywhere from rigorous science courses to great business classes, and easy classes for the partiers.
Tips for prospective students If you or your parents are worried about C of C being a Party School, it is, but that's really easy to stay away from if you don't go looking.
Bang for the buck College of Charleston is relatively affordable I suppose. It is as far as colleges are concerned at least. I've found that many of the students here are kids with rich parents from out of state, just coming to party.
Will enjoy being here I think I'm going to enjoy it here very much! However, I've had trouble getting everything sorted out up to now, particularly housing. Other than that, it's a beautiful campus with friendly people. Great food is everywhere which could end up to be a bad thing for broke college students.
Academic Rigor I'm learning so much here. The teachers are all challenging, but eager to teach and very interesting.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are security systems all over campus and a 24/7 security guard on call.
Greek Life Charleston prides itself on having southern greek life that involves parties, dances, dinners, balls, and gatherings of all kinds. Some fraternities will go to beach week while a sorority may have mountain weekend, there is always something going on and always someone to do it with.
Clubs and Activities There is any and every sport imaginable along with art and theatre clubs. There are clubs for anything anyone can think of, and if some how there is no club yet then you can be a founding father and create your own club!
Great for these types of students Laid back people who are enjoyable to be around and know when to study and when to party. Charleston is not out of control, but it is a fun place to be.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The historic value around the college is amazing, students can live in a 200 year old house instead of a dorm. Few colleges can offer this commodity.
Bang for the buck Charleston is a beautiful historic area, and therefore the money can become short, but if you know where to go and what places to eat to save little bits of cash here and there it is not a problem for a college student with a weekend job to support himself.
What to do for fun There is so much to do, a nice tour of the battery while the ocean breeze washes over with a soul mate, family member, or new friend is always relaxing along with lounging in the park or doing some shopping on King st. or at the northern outlets. The beach is only fifteen minutes away and if you know some one with money Kiawah is a beautiful island that offers luscious golf courses and tranquil beach lounging.
Food and Dining All food everywhere in Charleston is delicious, being a New Olreans, LA native I am picky about good food, but the cuisine here has surpassed my standards.
Dorm Life The dorms are no different than any school but it is the people who live in them that continues to amaze me I love them all and being in this town is a treat.
Academic Rigor Being a liberal arts school, the college requirers students to take foreign languages and other classical classes that would normally be left out of a biology major. While these courses do take time and energy they provide the student to discover new areas and interests that may not have been noticed prior to attending the school.
Tips for prospective students Apply early and make sure to set up a visit to take all that the college and the city of Charleston has to offer.
In three sentences The College of Charleston is well-rounded, beautiful school that rests elegantly on the Atlantic Ocean. Surrounded by delicious food, intelligent professors, and interesting people; there is no better place to attend school. Any student enrolled at the college will tell you of how wondrous and exquisite it is, and how much of an honor it is to attend.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students This school is the best for students looking in: Marine Biology, Hospitality and Tourism, Art, Theatre, History, and also those undecided. But overall this is a great place for anything students could want, especially because of the many choices of majors and minors to choose from.
Tips for prospective students This is a great school especially if one is undecided. They offer a great variety of majors to prospectively choose from, and if you want to go on to graduate school they also have great branches to pick from. Or it can even be a great launching point for you to get into other schools. Make sure to always see your advisor, they are always there to help with any decision troubles, and to send you to the right places for anything else you might need. Be warned though! This is a school that prides itself for getting students involved with campus life. Many students just want to wisp by, but you should take advantage of this opportunity from the school as it can provide a balance of: fun, friends, and an opening to not just get by in life, but to enjoy it also.
Bang for the buck For being what I believe to be a wonderful school, This is their only set back. Being a public school for the state does not seem to deter them from making one feel like their paying for a private one. And with freshman year the school requires these students to pay for things like a meal plan, or even 15 pages of printer paper that if not used up by end of semester/year will not be rolled over next time for use. Its all of these small, but collective fees that the school does that makes it irritating for students and parents. But even with these costs the school makes up for it in other ways.
Am enjoying being here The college is set in such a beautiful city with great history everywhere you walk, and it is a great plus that a beach is near by. Even the citizens of Charleston are involved with the college, just like when exams are commencing a local church will set up a free food stand for studying students, also wishing them good luck. Its so great to see how involved everyone gets with companies hiring students/graduates to help further themselves, the local residents wanting to give back, to even students who also want to get involved with the community with tons of volunteering. They have so many options for students besides just school work with the many provided centers for anything such as finding volunteer opportunities, religious life, crisis assistance, substance abuse/counseling, multicultural student programs, and a career center for those needing aid in searching for a job. This school helps so much in transitioning into the college life its no wonder that not only myself but other students always seem to be happy. And with so many activities going on for students to get engaged with its so easy to find not just career builders, but long lasting friends too. All of these factors make College of Charleston an enjoyable place to learn, live, and grow.
Am learning a lot You learn many things from not only the classes, but the staff as well. With a wide variety of classes that can help any student find what direction one would want to find themselves in. Students that are even undecided get a good feeling of no pressure for not deciding. And all of the staff have no qualms about answering any type of questions a student could have. They always do what they can to help students understand the goals they want, and how to achieve them with their abilities.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Everyone! We have a lot of diversity with students from all across the United States and all over the world. We have a vibrant Greek community, if that's of interest to you, that is smaller than many state universities, however, this allows you to really feel connected to other students in Greek life. Great art programs, as well as science; overall a great choice for those who want a well-rounded education
Tips for prospective students Make sure your professors know your name and think of you as hard-working. Have fun, but not too much. It's easy to get too caught up in the fun to be had in Charleston and forget that you're here to learn. Love living in the most beautiful city in the world and appreciate your time there.
Bang for the buck While the cost of the College of Charleston is high for out-of-state students, I believe that the quality of education you receive as a student at the College is well worth it. I have been away from the College for the semester, and the quality of education at my other university could not compare to what I was used to at the College.
Am enjoying being here Charleston is a fabulous city! There is so much to do here, no matter what your interests are. I love being involved on campus and have made great friends.
Academic Rigor Professors are reasonable, knowledgeable, and experienced. If you make an effort to go to their office hours for help, stay involved in in-class discussion, and overall try to perform well in the class, everyone is very willing to help and listen.

Bang for the buck The campus is very nice and so are the professors. I really enjoy coming ere and being ale to call myself a College of Charleston Cougar!

Categories Comments Campus Safety I have never encountered a problem with the campus safety. I regularly walk across campus to my friends' dorms at night and have never been bothered. There are campus police on bikes and segways usually patrolling the streets at all times. You'd think being in the city, the college wouldn't be that safe but it indeed is very safe.
Greek Life I am not involved with greek life myself but I have many friends who are in fraternities and sororities here and they have only had great things to say about it. One of my friends in Kappa Alpha Theta said she is having the time of her life and she is so glad she decided to join a sorority. Also, greek life is very big here, even though it is only around 20%, there is always something going on with a fraternity or sorority.
Great for these types of students The college is great for anyone who enjoys beautiful, warm weather in a city setting. The College of Charleston has the best of both worlds, being in a city setting, while surrounded by a beautiful waterfront, and only 10 minutes from the beach. If you enjoy tanning, shopping and always keeping busy, the College of Charleston is right for you.
What to do for fun The College of Charleston is located in the middle of downtown Charleston so there is never a shortage of fun things to do. Charleston is one of the most beautiful historic cities nationwide. There is every store imaginable located minutes from the dorms, and just a 10 minute walk from the famous city market. Also, there are a plethora of different restaurants to choose from. Not to mention, the college is just a short 10-20 minute drive from the beach!
Food and Dining The food has good days and bad days, however on a bad day, there are always several different options to fall back on. There is always a salad bar, pizza bar, American food station, fruit, sandwiches, soup, cereal, and a dessert bar. So one could argue that everyday is a good day.
Dorm Life I live in one of the most expensive and up-to-date dorms on the campus and I have no complaints. I love my room, it is very clean and I've kept it nicely decorated. I share my room with one other person and my bathroom with three others and I've never seemed to have a problem with that. Liberty dorm is much nicer than most dorms on this campus and it is conveniently located to our dining hall.
Academic Rigor Coming from a college prep private school with 8 classes at a time, The College of Charleston has definitely been a contender. I never anticipated that it would be as hard as it is. I study almost all week for the 16 credit hours I am currently enrolled in. However, I believe my high school prepared me very well for this college.
Tips for prospective students If you're even considering the college, make sure you give it a shot! College of Charleston has great academics, and the city is unbelievable.
In three sentences I absolutely love the college. I continually fall in love with the city and beautiful campus on a daily basis. The campus atmosphere and the college in general is tough to beat.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I feel very safe at CofC. Emergency call boxes are placed conveniently throughout campus. CofC has a very low crime rate. Statistics can be found here: http://studentaffairs.cofc.edu/annual-security/annual-crime-statistics.php
Greek Life I don't currently participate in the Greek activities on campus. Here is a list of sororities: http://greeks.cofc.edu/how-to-join/sorority-recruitment.php Fraternities: http://greeks.cofc.edu/how-to-join/fraternity-recruitment.php
Clubs and Activities There are a huge variety of clubs and activities at CofC. Unfortunately, during 18-credit-hour semesters, I have no time to participate. Here is a list of available clubs: http://www.cofc.edu/campuslife/clubsandorganizations/clubsandorganizationslist.php
Great for these types of students CofC is great for commuting students. The Carta bus service makes the commute from many areas of town easy. Carta Express delivers students to the heart of the campus. The Express Bus gets me to my class in the same amount of time as driving my personal vehicle. CofC provides students with free Carta bus service.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The graduation ceremony at CofC is quite unusual. Caps and gowns are not worn. Instead, spring graduates wear white dresses / dinner jackets. December graduates wear black dresses / tuxedos.
Bang for the buck Since my GPA and SAT scores were high enough to qualify for the Life Scholarship, my tuition is around $5,000 per year. I find this to be very reasonable, especially since I don't have the expense of a dorm room and a vehicle.
What to do for fun I enjoy attending musicals at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center. Since I work part-time at the local movie theatre, I see several movies each month. I also enjoy local festivals, such as Piccolo Spoleto.
Food and Dining If you plan on living on campus, I highly recommend the meal plan. http://www.campusdish.com/en-US/csse/charleston/
Dorm Life I live at home with my parents, and commute to school via Carta. CofC students don't pay for bus passes, and the express bus gets me to school in 30 minutes. Here is some information on CofC dorm living: http://reslife.cofc.edu/housing-and-rates/index.php
Academic Rigor The academic rigor depends on your class selection, as well as the number of credits taken each semester. This spring, I loaded up on 18 credit hours. It was stressful, but rewarding.
Tips for prospective students Taking college courses at your local technical college can give you a big head start. I graduated high school with 24 college credits, and they all transferred to CofC. This means that I will graduate from CofC a semester early. South Carolina offers the Life Scholarship, which contributes $5000 per year toward expenses. Remember to keep your GPA up and study hard for the SAT. Here are the requirements: http://sc.edu/financialaid/life.html
In three sentences I enjoy my undergraduate classes at CofC. Class sizes are reasonable, and my professors are approachable and helpful. I appreciate the large selection of electives.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Impecable.
Greek Life Best decision you will ever make.
Clubs and Activities Stay active in college, it keeps you well rounded.
Great for these types of students If you love a city atmosphere with a historic background then Charleston is the place for you.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Graduating from the college is one of the most awaited for traditions. Girls in white dresses with a dozen roses, and the guys in white tux jackets and roses pinned to their jackets; what could be more classy?
Bang for the buck The school is worth every penny, but CVS is not. Their prices are 5x higher because it is so convenient, and be careful on King Street, it can get you in trouble!
What to do for fun It's Charleston, what is there not to do?!
Food and Dining City Bistro is the way to go!
Dorm Life I lived in three different housing facilities freshman year. The dorms are fun and definitely safe, but living in my sorority house was the best! I was really able to connect with the other girls living in the house and it was such a homey experience.
Academic Rigor The academics are not easy, especially the bio department! But if you manage your time and study hard, everything will work out just fine!
Tips for prospective students 1. Keep five to ten dollars of cash always on you. 2. NEVER forget your cougar card, it's your life! 3. When you see a professor on King Street, don't freak out! They are normal people too! 4. City Bistro is definitely better than Liberty, but the workers are all so so nice! 5. Don't be scared of a guy walking around in a uniform...it's probably just a Citadel student. 6. Folly is your friend. 7. Greek Life is a wonderful opportunity. 8. Always walk with a friend when it is late. 9. Invest in a bike, you won't regret it! 10. You are attending one of the most amazing schools in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, take a few minutes to actually take it in each day.
In three sentences The College is a great place to open your mind and see the world for all of the wonderful things it has to offer. College of Charleston professors welcome students with open arms and the student body is more than enthusiastic about being a cougar. I would never want to be a student anywhere else.

Categories Comments Campus Safety No matter where or when you are walking or jogging around you feel safe.
Greek Life greek life sucks, only sororities are popular and most of frats are looked down upon.
Clubs and Activities Bars are awesome! if you are into more hip or high class places, you can pick and choose from many options.
Great for these types of students self motivated, science or art driven, and any other independent souls trying to make sense of this crazy place called life.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Each person who goes to cofc can find his or her own special place in the city for studying or relaxing. Some might enjoy the view of the water, others might just prefer to lay down and just take a nap under gigantic oak trees in one of many parks.
Bang for the buck Instate tuition is totally worth it. Ten thousand is great price, however the living expenses can add up quickly.
What to do for fun beach is always a first choice, club 99 (comedy club) is great. going out to the bars (if you are 21) or just going to dance clubs if you are under age is best choice. Walks along the battery and just touring historic town is also great
Food and Dining Food outside of school cafeteria is amazing! Schools cafeteria is extremely questionable.
Dorm Life Depending on tier one two or three, dorms can be nice or god awful. You are in the south, so palmetto bugs are common. However, with that being said, most dorms feel like apartments and are extremely conveniently located in middle of the city.
Academic Rigor Science is great at CofC. Not easy, but fair and teachers are truly dedicated to their jobs.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you manage play time and study time well. Its easy to loose priorities first year. If you can concentrate and separate those two well, you will be just fine.
In three sentences I love it. Great location combined with souther hospitality makes optimal learning environment. Definitely recommended for serious students especially seeking science oriented degrees or pre-med.

Am enjoying being here There is a lot of Greek Life at CofC so if you're not into that, you won't love CofC.

Categories Comments What to do for fun every night, literally, there is something going on. you do not have to be a part of the greek group to have fun. they are not exclusive or rude, they have fun in their own way and with everyone else! not to mention, the beach is so close, as well as a ton of bars.
Food and Dining wherever you go, cafeterias or not, the food is typically amazing down here. have to enjoy the southern cooking!
Dorm Life definitely necessary as a freshmen because you meet your closest friends there and a sense of community develops.
Academic Rigor if you take challenging classes, they will challenge you. if you take only easy classes to breeze through, then breeze.
Tips for prospective students enjoy living in the dorm for a first year, you meet so many people! and do not get too distracted by the beauty of the days or areas around you, keep up with your grades! go do homework in marion or the cistern.
In three sentences professors are amazing and classes are small enough to develop a relationship with them. the atmosphere of life is incredible along with the continuously, typically warm weather. the people are awesome and the social/night life always has something going on!

Categories Comments Campus Safety Guards at the dorm desks at night and emergency alert buttons all over the place.
Clubs and Activities Rowing club! There are over a hundred clubs and clubs are very easy to start. If it isn't here yet then just start it.
Great for these types of students Anyone who doesn't need a big school or a hardcore party school.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The cistern yard is a beautiful area where graduation happens. On sunny days student lounge outside here.
Bang for the buck Its a private school feel for public school price.
What to do for fun Go to the beach, play video games at stern center, swim at stern center, go sailing, go biking, go for a run, sun bathe, explore downtown, take a ghost tour, take a horse drawn carriage ride, go to the tea plantation, go see the angel oak, go to the aquarium, go to fort Sumter
Food and Dining Charleston has awesome food for those that can afford to eat out. The dining halls aren't bad and the variety is there.
Dorm Life The dorms are nice but most upperclassmen live off campus. Off campus life is more exciting provably but the dorms are there.
Academic Rigor The classes are tough but the professors are almost always good. Most of my professors even acknowledge life outside the classroom.
Tips for prospective students Visit the college! Spend some time on campus and off in the city. Its worth the trip to see if this is the place for you. Once I visited, i knew it was the right choice.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Being downtown, the campus has very good campus safety
Greek Life The Greek Life is not extremely overpowering on campus, but there is involvement from a lot of students.
Clubs and Activities There are many clubs and activities throughout campus each year. These range from language clubs to political clubs. There are also club sports available for non-varsity athletes.
Great for these types of students Hard workers, critical thinkers, and students that want to learn are perfect students at the College of Charleston.
Bang for the buck College of Charleston is definitely expensive, especially for out of state, but students get a lot out of their money with the fantastic academics and the good dorms and food.
What to do for fun Charleston is a perfect city for outdoor activities. There is the beach, the water, and the market as well as the beautiful downtown. There are many bars downtown that are 21+ as well as house parties every weekend.
Food and Dining The food in the cafeterias are better than many other schools, but it gets old after a semester. The two cafeterias have fresh food at all times, and the student center has a variety of quick restaurants.
Dorm Life The dorms are the places that people meet other students and residents of their dorm. I live in McConnell and love it. A lot of people are very outgoing and welcoming.
Academic Rigor The classes are very hard depending on which classes you take. The introductory classes are a little bit easier than the 200+ level classes, but they are still challenging and require a lot of work.
Tips for prospective students Make sure to keep your grades up during the second semester of your senior year, because the school will be looking at your final transcript. Continue to be involved in clubs and organizations, as well as some leadership opportunities.
In three sentences College of Charleston has a great atmosphere and a variety of people. Everyone is genuinely very friendly and outgoing to newcomers. The classes are hard and require a lot of work outside of the classroom.

Categories Comments Campus Safety because of the downtown location of cofc's campus, safety is taken very seriously. there are always public safety officers nearby for assistance as well as an on-campus public safety office students can go to either for an emergency, to report something stolen, or any other safety concern they may have.
Greek Life greek life definitely has a presence on campus, but there are several who are not involved as well. and for those who aren't, there isn't a social pressure to feel the need to be in a sorority or fraternity, because there isn't a big devision between those who go greek and those who don't. greek life is an extra social opportunity students have, but it's not the only option to spend their social lives. events hosted by greek life isn't completely exclusive, either, because non-greek students are able to attend and enjoy themselves as well.
Clubs and Activities as mentioned above, cofc has a great number of organizations for students to join, ranging from spanish and french clubs to americans for informed democracy, the visual arts club and the international club, to the running club and real estate club, and more. there are opportunities for all types of athletes, and an outdoor adventure club that takes frequent kayak and camping trips. there's something for everyone, and those who are active are dedicated to what they participate in and accomplish a lot throughout campus.
Great for these types of students one of the great things about cofc is that there are so many different personalities among the students, faculty and staff. this is not a school where everyone you meet is the same, where everyone has one of two majors, or where everyone comes from the same place. people at this school come from all fifty states and several different countries, and we all have different plans for during and after our high school careers. cofc is great for the types of students who are looking to mix things up.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus the cistern is a favorite place for many of cofc's students. it's a very open space in the middle of campus full of grass and trees and some of cofc's most beautiful and oldest buildings. here is where graduation is held, where several art classes are taught, where frisbees are thrown and students nap and more. it's an unusually quiet and peaceful place in the heart of a busy city.
Bang for the buck although cofc is pricey, especially for out-of-state students, the overall price includes fees that are often additional at other schools, such as laundry, student health fees, using cofc transportation, attending campus performances and art shows, etc. also, especially for living in a city as popular and exciting as charleston, the price to live here is exceptionally low when living on campus as a student. cofc does a really good job of looking after its students and making sure their academic needs are met, as well as providing them with some of the best living spaces. cofc also has some of the most advanced technology for learning purposes, as well as additional resources in the library and student center.
What to do for fun there are hundreds of clubs and organizations for students to participate in, and every sport has both club and intramural teams in addition to the official school team. charleston has an exceptional night life and both the college and city has a great time. there are also on-campus activities such as frequent art exhibits and festivals, movies are shown in the auditorium, and there is always a cofc performance or sports game. band concerts are often showing either on campus are nearby in charleston, which are always a huge hit. also, the beach is just a few minutes away and is always a good time. and with charleston's year-round temperate weather the beach is almost never out of the question.
Food and Dining cofc students are very fortunate in that meal plans include a lot of variety in where to eat and the types of food offered. there are take-out options as well as sit-down dining. the dining staff is very friendly and they work really hard to prepare food for students that they can access at multiple locations. the only downside is that the city of charleston is known for having really good food, and a meal plan limits how much a student might be able to spend eating out at restaurants.
Dorm Life there are several options when looking to live on campus. there are a variety of dorm styles to choose from: suite style, community, apartments, historic houses, and more. all dorms are located right on campus close to the main buildings as well as some of the best parts of the city of charleston. the dorms all feel very safe, without being overbearing or invading privacy of students. another major plus is that all dorms include multiple laundry rooms that are no extra charge for students to use.
Academic Rigor cofc is not the school to go to if you're looking to slack off and still get a's. you really need to put in the effort and study a lot to be successful. especially if you're in the honors college, the courses are rigorous and challenging. however, the faculty is very helpful and willing to work with students outside of class to make sure they understand the material. also, there are several tutoring labs in the library, such as the writing lab, spanish lab, math lab, and more that are very accessible and helpful to all students.
Tips for prospective students if you have an idea of what you might want to major in, definitely look into the college's department of that area, and waste no time getting to know professors and department leaders you may be working with. part of what makes cofc such a great school is the incredible city of charleston--make sure you don't just tour campus, explore the city and really get to know the place you might be living in. it's also important to really be comfortable in all corners of campus, especially places you might use often such as the library and dining halls and gyms. walk around on your own, apart from a tour, and see if you could see yourself there on a regular basis.
In three sentences in addition to a gorgeous campus, cofc has an intelligent and experienced faculty that is dedicated to its student and their success. because of the college's mid-size student population (10,000 undergrad), there's a good balance of plenty of people without feeling lost in a crowd. the college is very expensive, but the great experiences and opportunities (such as the diverse study abroad and internship options) are worth it for everything you learn and the connections you make--both socially and in the working world.

Categories Comments Campus Safety charleston is a very safe city to begin with, but the campus location, and its security staff are top notch.
Greek Life i never pledged, so i have no idea.
Clubs and Activities everything from skydiving to ballroom dancing. i was a member of the c of c fencing club!
Great for these types of students anyone looking for a smaller student body, or a great liberal arts education.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus the cistern is the heart of campus, it's a beautiful park in front of randolf hall, which was one of the original dorms, dating back to the late 18th century. everyone graduates here, the men in white dinner jackets, and the women in white dresses. it's an old tradition, and makes for really special graduation photos.
Bang for the buck as i said before, college of charleston is considered one of the best values for the money, especially for south carolina students in good standing. the palmetto life scholarship will go a long way toward covering costs.
What to do for fun there's always something to do. charleston is known for its thriving food and art culture. there are art walks, spoleto festival usa every may, parks, etc. there are also plenty of activities available on campus any given night of the week.
Food and Dining the food in charleston is amazing (husk was named #1 restaurant in america by bon appetite magazine), and there are great restaurants around and near the campus. caviar and bananas is a gourmet food shop and deli is right across from one of the main campus buildings.
Dorm Life charleston is a fun town to live in. the dorms are in the heart of the city, so there's always something going on. the dorms themselves range in quality, and some of them can be pretty nice, depending on your budget.
Academic Rigor like any school, there are certain programs that are known for being tough (biology, i hear, is one of them for c of c). overall, i felt challenged in my classes, but not overwhelmed.
Tips for prospective students visit the campus, and talk to students and professors to see if it's a good fit for you. also, this goes for any school you attend: balance your schoolwork with the fun and freedom of being out on your own. believe me, a little discipline now will pay off later!
In three sentences college of charleston has a beautiful campus, and a wide variety of extracurricular activities both on campus and around the city. it is also considered a great value in terms of the quality of the education you receive for the money you pay. it's a school worth looking into.

Food and Dining many places on or close to campus to get food.
Dorm Life i didn't live in the dorms myself, but i used to visit a friend that did and i liked that the dorms were so close to campus. and the way they were set up gave each person his or her own space.
Academic Rigor i like a college that challenges me to be my best and cofc did that for me.
Tips for prospective students get involved in clubs and get to know your professors for recommendations and extra help. don't be shy about asking for help, so take advantage of the free tutoring services available. make sure you visit the campus and take a tour.
In three sentences cofc is a school full of history and beautiful scenery. the instructors are very helpful and the class sizes aren't overwhelming. the campus is an urban setting with many activities to get involved in.

Categories Comments What to do for fun i like to salsa dance, hangout at marion square and read, shop, go to parties, the movies, bowling, and play tennis. there's plenty to do!
Food and Dining there are so many places to eat, you won't believe it! anything you want, sushi, mexican, thai... it's there! there is also an amazing off-campus meal plan so you can eat at amazing places without spending money.
Dorm Life the dorms are super safe to live in. you can choose rooms with up to five other people and it's a great way to make friends.
Academic Rigor it's a competitive college to get in to and the courses are only as challenging as you make them. study and you'll succeed!
Tips for prospective students it's a wonderful place but be prepared to spend all your money. king street is shopping central and it's only one block from campus!
In three sentences college of charleston is absolutely amazing. the people are nice, the town is beautiful and the professors really care for your education. i love it and wouldn't leave for anything.

Freshman Physics Major

Categories Comments What to do for fun there are always parties going on whether they are on or off campus so if you like to party you can always find one. on the other hand, if parties are not your thing, there are usually school sponsored events going on that are fun.
Food and Dining food on campus is not the best. sometimes it is great but usually it sucks. plan on eating out often. the food off campus is always good.
Dorm Life the upper upperclassmen dorms are pretty nice. the freshmen dorms are disgusting. if you don't like to share i suggest you move off campus or into the upperclassmen dorms asap. but living on campus you are always in the middle of everything and you get to meet lots of new people.
Academic Rigor if you are a math or science major, you will be challenged. some of the other majors are not that difficult. the gen. eds are a lot and will take up at least a year and a half but they are not that bad. they give you a chance to explore other options to study so don't think of them as a waste of time.
Tips for prospective students be sure to visit the school and if possible, spend a weekend so that you can get a feel whether or not the school is right for you. also, talk to prospective students and teachers in your major to find out what they like and don't like.
In three sentences an easy school for some majors and very challenging for others, especially math and science. most professors are very willing to help you in any way that they can. the city is one of the best in the world.

Categories Comments Campus Safety seriously, our campus safety is like a ninja army. if you need them, they are there in no time like ants to honey. they take their job really seriously, because this is a city and there is a greater risk living here then if we were a school separated from everything. they will always help you.
Greek Life greek like is a big deal here, but only in the sense that everyone has friends in sororities and frats, and everyone knows something about greek life. greek life here is a great thing, and the people i know who are in it really love it, but there are so many people who don't that there is absolutely no worry that you won't find friends unless you join.
Clubs and Activities we have a wild amount of clubs and club sports, and everyone is involved in something, whether it's a club that has something to do with their major, a service club, or recreational. all the clubs are welcoming, and you can try any out that you want. as a history major, you can still go to the aquarium with the biology club, and even if you have never rowed in your life, you can join club crew (beware...they operate like a varsity team). along with clubs, there are also tons of organizations off-campus to get involved in and volunteer for.
Great for these types of students -anyone who is seriously up for an adventure -the southern gentleman -anyone who has a love of history and/or old beautiful buildings -people who love the heat (if you don't like nearly sweating your brains out, you should probably go somewhere up north)
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus -we graduate in white dresses/white dinner jackets! when students graduate, they look like something out of a delightful southern family portrait. and our rings haven't changed since we became a school. on everyone's charleston bucket list: -watch the sun rise over the water at the battery park. -get a slice of pie the size of your head at kaminsky's. -sit on the francis marion statue. -do homework at the cistern (or just hang out). -get pizza at norm's. -run the cooper river bridge -learn how to longboard -take yourself on a field trip to the aquarium (say hi to the sea turtles for me) -go sailing -take a yoga class or a zumba class (provided by the school!)
Bang for the buck when you pay for the college, you're also paying for the history, the tradition, the charm, the city, and the ability to have a class in a civil war-era charleston single house (look it up). much like a gourmet restaurant takes there atmosphere just as seriously as their food, at the college you get a gourmet education with a five-star atmosphere.
What to do for fun everything is fun here (even walking to class), but some highlights include: any of the many beaches that surround the peninsula, cheap live music events at one of the city's many venues, shopping on king st. and at the market, frisbee in marion square (or sunbathing!), a basketball game at carolina first arena or a soccer game at patriot's point, a bike ride down to the waterfront, or one of my favorites - a good walk in the historic neighborhoods of the city. you will not be bored here....ever.
Food and Dining wow! our dining halls are absolutely spectacular. they take lots of pride in fresh ingredients and a variety of options, from sunday dinner-type meals to made-to-order stir-fry. and even better, it's all you can eat. you won't need ramen if you come here, although i still eat it because it's delicious.
Dorm Life the dorms are great and come with some pretty lucky amenities, including free laundry and cable. the dorm staff are great and take good care of everyone, and every room has the potential to become home. mine certainly has.
Academic Rigor the college is challenging, and the liberal arts curriculum makes it possible to take all sorts of classes on all sorts of subjects, but the classes aren't so difficult that it's impossible to take a class in a subject you have no background in. that's the beauty of our school.
Tips for prospective students everyday there is a stampede of wonderful opportunities to see and do things you've never done before. my advice to you? watch out! take advantage of once-in-a-lifetime experiences for sure, but don't get caught up in them so much that you forget you're in school! it's an easy thing to do in a city like charleston.
In three sentences charleston is the coolest place to go to college, and everyone knows it. the city is beautiful, and that reflects upon the attitude of everyone here. the school is rich with history and southern charm, as well as the city, and the whole peninsula is your playground.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is always security around and emergency boxes all over campus.
Greek Life You should definitely rush to see what it's like and if you like it. It is worth it no matter what you choose. Greek life is pretty big because it is a Southern school.
Clubs and Activities There are lots of clubs to do, and intermural sports as well.
Great for these types of students Students who like to go out, like warm weather, and love the beach.

Food and Dining The cafeterias aren't horrible, there are lots of off-campus options as well.

Dorm Life You will meet some very cool peers living in dorms.
Academic Rigor The easiness of the classes depend upon your major but all of the teachers are very helpful.

Food and Dining in the heart of downtown there are so many restaurants if you do not like the on campus dining.

Academic Rigor College of Charleston had a some of the best departments in the nation. We have NASA on staff, ex CIA agent, Hootie & the Blowfish singer on staff. Outstanding staff who know their students and challenge their students.

What to do for fun It's always wonderful to walk around downtown. You feel like you're literally walking through a time capsule. The Campus is right downtown, so it's very easy to go exploring. It's also very easy to walk down to the Pier, and extremely beautiful and enchanting.
Tips for prospective students Even though you are required to live on campus the first year, i highly suggest finding housing off campus after your first year. Dorms are extremely expensive at College of Charleston, and you'll save a lot of money if you can find a place elsewhere. A prospective student should consider that Charleston is rather expensive to reside in, but the Beauty of the city is definitely worth it.
In three sentences College of Charleston is a great College for students wanting a liberal arts degree. The campus is absolutely beautiful and relatively easy to get around. I've really enjoyed taking classes here for the past 3 years and highly recommend it.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Public Safety on campus does a good job. I constantly see police officers patrolling the campus on foot, bike, etc. I generally feel safe even though the school is located in the heart of the city.
Greek Life Greak life is small on campus but also influential. Many students are satisfied with making friends outside of greek life. But those in greek life, enjoy their experience.
Clubs and Activities There are many clubs and club sports to get involved in. For example, I was both a rower and coxswain on the Rowing Team (Crew).
Great for these types of students The school is generally known as preppy. Many southern bells and boys who dress like they are in a frat attend the school. 65 Percent of the school is girls, and there are many homosexual males at the school. However, the culture in the city is absolutely amazing and all types of people from all over the country attend the school.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Cistern is an important and central place on campus. It is located in front of the oldest building in the United States that still has classes being held in it. Graduation is also held at the Cistern. Many students love to sit, study and relax at the Cistern.
Bang for the buck While the school is expensive for out-of-state students, it is fair priced for in-state students.
What to do for fun Many students can explore Charleston as a tourist. The city is rich in history. There are three beaches near Charleston, and they are only 15 minutes away. The city also offers many good restaurants and shops.
Food and Dining The food and dining at CofC continually gets better every year. They just built a new cafeteria that not only is a buffet but it offers students the opportunity to take a box to go and fill it up with food if they are in a rush.
Dorm Life Dorm life is good for freshmen. It's a great way at CofC to get to know other new students, because all freshmen have to live in a dorm.
Academic Rigor Generally, science classes are very difficult at CofC. However, humanity courses are fairly easy.
Tips for prospective students Visit the school and explore the city as a tourist. Try to talk to a department while there in order to learn more about your interested major and what the school has to offer.
In three sentences CofC is a wonderful school located in a historic and beautiful port city. The school is rich in culture and is the 13th oldest college in the United States. In addition to a great education, experience life in Charleston by visiting historic sites or hitting the beach.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Well, we live in a city. So there are obviously safety hazards. CofC does everything it can to keep you safe. Just be aware, make good decisions, maybe take some self defense classes, and you should be just fine. I wouldn't walk around at night all by yourself, but I also wouldn't flinch at every shadow here, is what I mean.
Greek Life I know some people that really love Greek Life. I chose not to get involved. It's just a lot of obligations. It's a big commitment, and very much a lifestyle.
Clubs and Activities There are so many. I'm really involved with behind the scenes theater stuff, and I love it. I know about a lot of other clubs and activities. If you are passionate about something, then you should find other people who are passionate as well, and bond over your shared interests. That sounds like a pretty solid fun time.
Great for these types of students Every single type of person can find something to love here. The only kind of person I can see not enjoying their time here, is the person who is constantly wanting to go home. If you're not ready to leave home, then by all means, you should not leave just yet.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Some restaurants do trivia nights. Those are fun, though not exactly unusual. I like to go up on rooftops of parking garages and look around the city. It's an amazing feeling.
Bang for the buck It is so worth every penny you spend to go here! (Maybe not as far as that meal plan goes though...) Try not to miss any classes, keep your grades up, be involved as much as you see fit, and you will not have wasted a dime here.
What to do for fun Oh my stars- There is so much to do here. I used to go to a different school, where it felt like there was nothing to do ever. I truly felt trapped on the campus there. Here, at CofC, I am never bored. There are people doing things all the time. There are constantly shows being put on, clubs meeting, places to explore. I love to just ride my bike around and listen to music, or just go for a walk down to the Battery (which is beautiful). You can feel the incredible amount of history in Charleston just oozing out of its historic buildings, and that creates such a charming atmosphere. I have never once felt bored here. It is so easy to make your own fun here, there are so many adventures to be had. The students here love to have fun, so its never too far off.
Food and Dining Some of the food is stellar. A lot of the food is subpar. The meal plan is kind of a waste. I, personally, opted not to get it. (I never lived in the dorms, otherwise I think you have to.) But who picks a school based on what they serve in the cafeterias? That should not be high on your priority list when picking a school.
Dorm Life I actually never lived in the dorms here, but my friends who have seem to truly enjoy it. They met some of their best friends here because they lived in the same dorm. It's truly like a community in there. Not like some hotel where everybody just keeps to themselves. People get to know each other. It's a great way to make friends.
Academic Rigor Teachers want to make it easy for you here, but they don't want you to get nothing out of your lessons. They expect you to give it your level best, and they provide a lot of opportunities for you to prove to them that you deserve a good grade. Sometimes classes can be boring, but if you do everything you can to stay interested in the topic, then you'll be fine. Maybe find some specific aspect of whatever you're learning that you are truly fascinated by and read further into it. That's what I do, and it seems to work. Just don't let things pile up, try to work ahead. Projects sneak up on you, and they all seem to be due at the same time.
Tips for prospective students College of Charleston is a really great place to do a lot of things and to meet a lot of people. Try out a variety of activities when you get here, see if there are any clubs that tickle your fancy. Go random with the roommate. You might wind up with a horror story, but you just might as easily wind up with another best friend. It's completely worth the risk.
In three sentences College of Charleston is really great. The faculty and staff here are extremely helpful, and the environment, in general, is really friendly. Everyone that works at the college genuinely wants to help you succeed, and that's something that I think is rare.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Our campus is very safe. Campus security does agreat job of keeping everyone safe, and you can be secure in the knowledge that you are secure no matter where you are on campus or at what time.
Greek Life We have an awesome Greek community on-campus. Unlike a lot of schools our Greeks aren't separate from the rest of campus. Greeks and non-Greeks alike hang out together having fun.
Clubs and Activities There are tons of clubs and organizations on campus. Whether you love sports or politics or even Quidditch, there is something for everyone.
Great for these types of students Charleston's great for any student who is looking to work hard at what you love but loves a laid-back lifestyle. In Charleston we are all about making time to work and to play and on Fridays you will find most everyone hanging out at the beach relaxing and having fun.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus One of our best traditions at College of Charleston happens at everyone's least favorite time of the semester, exams. During exam week when everyone is stressed out and studying like crazy, we have a crazy rave... in the middle of the library. Its a great way to take a break, wake up, and de-stress a little so you ca get back to work.
What to do for fun There is always something fun going on on campus. There are so many clubs and organizations everyone can find something they like to do. Also, being right in the heart of downtown Charleston gives you easy access to all the festivals and events happening in the city.
Food and Dining College of Charleston has differently raised the bar on dining halls. The staffs are always so friendly and the food is so great. My favorite is Liberty which always has lots of different choices so no matter what you're in the mood for, you can probably find it in Liberty.
Dorm Life The dorms are are great. They are all so special in there own way; so everyone can find somewhere that they feel comfortable.
Academic Rigor The classes are differently challenging and engaging. But they keep you interested in figuring out what you want to do in life.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you stay on top of everything. There's always so much going on that it's easy to be distracted from working.
In three sentences I would give College of Charleston a ten out of ten. I love my school; its so diverse and located right in the heart of the city. The faculty is always ready to help you however they can to help you succeed and there' really nothing you can achieve here.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus is relatively safe for being in the middle of a bustling city like Charleston. There will always be incidents but the Public Safety program on campus is always working hard to keep College of Charleston safe. The cougar shuttle is incredibly helpful for getting home at night if you are walking by yourself.
Greek Life I do not participate in College of Charleston's Greek life.
Clubs and Activities Though I mostly participate in off campus activities I have seen that this school has more clubs than I can count and regularly schedules activities such as a showing of the new Harry Potter movie in the Physician's auditorium.
Great for these types of students College of Charleston is great for artistic students and people who are interested in integrating themselves in the school's thriving campus life. Social people will flourish in this environment.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus At College of Charleston we have what we call the cistern which is a large, circular, raised platform of grass with a concrete walkway through the center. When you graduate from College of Charleston you cross the cistern via the pathway. If you cross the cistern before graduation it is said that you will not graduate.
Bang for the buck College of Charleston is expensive, for in-state students it is reasonable but for out of state students the prices are just appalling.
What to do for fun Charleston is a city full of things to do in your spare time! Through the college there are innumerable clubs and activities to enjoy. If you are not enthusiastic about activities through the school, then there are many other ways to have fun in Charleston as well, such as bike races, lounging in Marion Square, and shopping in the stores lining the streets around campus.
Food and Dining The only thing about this school that I cannot stand is the dining services. They are never open when you need them and they all have horrid attitudes. I am always more than polite with the people in the dining halls and still receive awful service, attitude, and substandard food.
Dorm Life I lived in College Lodge for my first year of school at College of Charleston. Living at lodge was one of the reasons I felt so integrated and accepted at this school. I have met people who have lived there for the past four years and still adore it. There is an intense bond between all of the people at lodge and it is something special that everyone should have the chance to experience.
Academic Rigor College of Charleston is challenging while at the same time allowing opportunities for the students to enjoy all of the aspects of college life, including having a life outside of class. The classes are difficult but with a bit of effort anyone can do it.
Tips for prospective students Plunge into campus life head first! There are so many vastly different clubs, activities, and sports that it is almost impossible not to find something you like. If you worry about not being able to find people with the same interests you simply must attend a club geared toward a subject you like!
In three sentences College of Charleston is a unique school not only in the fact that it is nestled right into the heart of downtown Charleston but also because everyone here, students and staff, strive to make new students feel welcome. In my first days at College of Charleston I was uncertain if I would find a place where I fit, with like-minded people and activities that I enjoy. The whole atmosphere of the school and the attitudes of the people in it assuaged that fear easily and I have never been happier in my surroundings.

Categories Comments What to do for fun The beach is only 20 minutes away by car, there is also the outlet mall, and regular mall that can be reached by bus or car. Everybody usually hangs out with friends.
Food and Dining The cafeterias and food amenities for the College of Charleston are great. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about the places and the people. However, they close too early for college students, maybe if they had some sort of midnight snack place.
Dorm Life I would suggest living in the dorm your freshman year just to see how much you would hate it. Its very expensive and cheaper to live off campus. The rules in the dorms and some of the dorm managers, RA's and RHD's abuse their power and have the idea that they have some sort of power over you. They forget that you both are around the same age.
Academic Rigor College of Charleston's academics are one of the best in the country. They have great professors and wonderful classrooms, they also have great way to get help if your struggling in any subject.
Tips for prospective students Do not get caught up in all the parties and activities so much that you do not get your work done. You are in school to get an education first and to hang out last.
In three sentences A great option for instate and out-of-state students. College of Charleston is a school for someone who needs or wants a school that has an open campus but still the luxury of it being close. This school is a great opportunity for anyone in any age group wanting to further their education beyond a diploma or GED.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are so many cops around campus, on bikes, on foot, even on segways!
Clubs and Activities It tickles me that we don't have a football team but we do have a quidditch team.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is a cougar statue that the students rub for good luck.
What to do for fun The campus is surrounded by downtown Charleston. There are plenty of restaurants and shops. There are also many clubs on campus, so finding something fun to get into is easy.
Food and Dining I love the chocolate chip cookies!
Dorm Life The dorms seem really fun and they take great care in matching you with a compatible roommate.
Academic Rigor There are so many interesting classes to choose from. I like the First Year Experience classes.
Tips for prospective students Visit the campus. The city around the school can be intimidating but if you know your way around it's great.
In three sentences I really love the campus. The people are so nice and help you out any way they can. The students are down to earth and look out for each other.

Categories Comments What to do for fun The campus is a great place to learn new things. For instance, I learned to long-board which gets you around faster than you think and also gets you into shape. There are many clubs to occupy your time with; and if they don't have the club you're looking for, feel free to create it and get it going. The college is all about letting your creative energies flow, and by all means, get your wheels turning.
Tips for prospective students The classes aren't necessarily hard, but you have to go to class to actually do good. Don't party too much, but have fun or you won't enjoy it. Make friends with as many people as you can and you will go places you never imagined.
In three sentences The College of Charleston is an amazing school with so many opportunities. The campus is beautiful and the student body is generally very accepting of each other. Overall the college is a wonderful environment to learn in and I would recommend it anyone.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is security in some of the major buildings, like the library, at all times with monitors and guards by the entrance . There are emergency phones located frequently around the campus, and the campus police patrol the spaces. Given the fact that the location of the campus is downtown, this is the safest place to be in the city.
Clubs and Activities There are several gyms around the campus that are discounted for students, and even courses you can take that will help you get active and fit. Many musical festivals and inspirational speakers tour the campus. Most classes give extra credit for attending local events as a way to encourage the students to explore the area.
Great for these types of students If you enjoy the outdoors, history, and humanities. Lots of activities in this area, and many different people from a variety of backgrounds.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Very historical campus; many of the buildings have plaques that indicated special features during the early period of this country, such as the civil war.
Bang for the buck It tends to be expensive. Living off campus and the eating out instead of using the galley will cost a fortune. Also, there is no parking for students in the dorms; most students have a bike, if you have a car you have to pay to keep it in the parking garage.
What to do for fun College of Charleston is located downtown, so there are a lot of amazing historical sites located within walking/biking distance. Also the aquarium, restaurants, and beach are all very close. The campus has a lot of extracurricular activities and even some classes that travel out to explore the surrounding area.
Food and Dining Again, not much experience. I try to save money and time by bringing my snacks and lunch. I have eaten in the galley once before and it was amazing. Lots of food to choose from and always the option of a warm meal; plus there are many restaurants and fast food shops that cater to those who enjoy local produce and a healthy diet.
Dorm Life I am a transfer student living off campus. I don't have experience with this topic, but I can say the buildings are nice and located all around the campus. Within 15 minutes you could bike or walk to class, the galley, or even the convenient stores.
Academic Rigor The courses can be very challenging and stimulating. I really enjoy the fact that every class I have had so far has opened my eyes to something I never realized. I can honestly say I have learned practical and beneficial teachings in every course I have enrolled.
Tips for prospective students Get a map, they are free and located in most of the campus buildings. It's a beautiful campus, but the buildings are spread out, so make sure you know where you're going ahead of time so you're not late to class. Take the library course, most people don't know about it, but it will help with your research papers for all subjects.
In three sentences I would rate this college 8 of 10. The teachers are very helpful and available for questions outside of class. However, the advisers are very difficult to track down so make sure when you do get a chance to talk to them, you go over your entire degree plan with them for the entire school year.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Frequent email and text updates from the Security Office to any register number/email. Assistance is provided to any student for late night study sessions.
Greek Life UNKOWN
Clubs and Activities Wide variety of clubs in the area but mostly fine dining and restaurants that provide some form of entertainment.
Great for these types of students Students who are undecided about a major or want a university degree but less of the sometimes overwhelming university campus feel.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Every college has a superstition, the college has a cistern in the courtyard of the first original building of the college. This is where students will walk to receive their degrees, so the superstition is for every time the student walks across the the cistern is a year of graduation delay. A unique tradition of the college is the attire of the students graduation day. It is customary to wear all white with a red flower attached to the attire for the special day as it is a southern tradition to wear lighter attire due to the heat and humidity during the summer months of Charleston.
Bang for the buck In comparison to some of the other universities in the state the cost is excellent but it is dependent upon the degree desired.
What to do for fun Lots of outdoors activities and buses to activities outside the school for cheap, nightlife- clubs and swing dance classes, the historic open market, carriage tours, shopping and tons of history museums.
Food and Dining Surrounded by some of the best restaurants in the U.S but meals are provided by the school services if purchased by semester. However, 2 grocery stores are only a few blocks away for the conservative student.
Dorm Life Wide variety but mostly simple and small.
Academic Rigor Attendance is required; take lots of notes and dependent upon the teacher, read your books a few times.
Tips for prospective students #1- register everything as early as possible because Charleston is a very busy during the summer months and your first visit could be an unpleasant one if all your ducks aren't in a row prior to arrival. #2- if you plan to live downtown do not bring a vehicle, invest in a moped or a bicycle. #3- for your first semester live in the dorms, make a friends, do very well in your classes so for next semester you can A) get more financial assistance and B) get an apartment and split the rent. #4 go to the college events, they're cooler than you think!
In three sentences The college is located in the heart historic downtown meaning you can walk or ride a bike virtually anywhere and there is always a view worth seeing. As it is a liberal arts college, the subjects are varying but the student- professor ratio is about a 20 student average. Overall, it's a great college for someone who wants to go to a good university and try a variety of courses but not be overwhelmed by a large campus.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus safety is really good, I'd say. A big part of staying safe, especially in a city, is being aware of yourself and your surroundings and making good decisions.
Greek Life The Greek Life here is very active. Very very active.
Clubs and Activities There are so many. Name anything you're interested in, there's probably a club for it.
Great for these types of students Laid-back, interesting, passionate, fun, lazy, active, any kind of student. To be honest, anyone could find a niche at CofC. You could have a ton of friends, or just a small close-knit group. You could go out and party every night, or you could stay in and chill every night. You could be really into the art scene, or greek life, or the stoner (let's be real, stoners exist everywhere) scene. You could be into activism, sports, fashion, etc. You could be a part of all of those groups too. You are free to be whoever you are here. There is a place for you.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Charleston is full of unusual traditions and locations. The history here is extraordinary. It's a great city for just walking around in.
Bang for the buck I'd say that CofC is really well priced for in-state students, but it would be a bit pricey for out of state students. A lot of getting the most bang for your buck is dependent on the student. If you utilize that which is made available to you, then it is absolutely worth every penny. Just don't come here and do nothing. That would be a royal waste of your money.
What to do for fun Anything and everything. There's always something happening in Charleston. It's a great scene for people who love art and music and things like that. There's all sorts of festivals and things that go on here. Not to mention, the school is about 20 minutes from the beach. Also parties. There is always a party going on somewhere.
Food and Dining There are so many great restaurants in Charleston. If you don't have to get a meal plan here, I wouldn't. But if you do, the food services the school provides isn't so bad. But definitely get the cheapest meal plan.
Dorm Life I never lived in the dorms here, but the people I know who have all really liked it. They made really great friends in their dorms.
Academic Rigor The classes can be hard, yes. But the professors are always trying to help. If you're struggling, they will work with you to help you succeed. Most of them are open to the idea of extra credit. Just don't let yourself fall behind.
Tips for prospective students You can't let yourself get too caught up in the social scene here, which is easy to do. Definitely participate in it, but if you go too hard at it, your grades will suffer. Don't be afraid to go to your professors with questions, they make themselves so accessible for you because they want to help you. It's their job. Do whatever it takes to stay engaged in a class, find ways to keep it interesting for you. Even if that means doing some extra research on a specific area of study pertaining to a specific course that you find intriguing.
In three sentences CofC is a really friendly environment in which learning is made worthwhile. Everyone here wants to see you succeed, and they're very willing to work with you to achieve your goals. CofC is a great school for making lifelong friends and memories, and will prepare you for whatever lies ahead.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is on call 24-7 and is always there if you need them. Do not hesitate to call or ask for help.
Greek Life Greek life is big but not too big. You can join if it's something you think you will enjoy. If not, there are still many opportunities to meet people. It is not the only source of social activity.
Clubs and Activities There are many clubs for every interest. Clubs within majors and just in general. Get out there and join whatever you can. It is worth it.
Great for these types of students If you are a fan of basketball the cougars have a great gym and student section. Basketball games are a lot of fun.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Graduation is an amazing tradition where it is outside in the cistern area underneath beautiful palm trees and everyone is wearing all white. Attending the school was such a treat, and graduation just secured that decision for me.
Bang for the buck Charleston is expensive, but if you go to Moe's Monday's they have great deals on food.
What to do for fun There is too much to do for fun in Charleston. There is lots of shopping, food, the beach, bars, houses, etc.
Food and Dining Meal plans are great to have because there are cafeterias all over campus that you can use them in.
Dorm Life The dorm that I lived in was very nice. They have been renovating alot so it is not your typical college dorm. They are almost like apartments.
Academic Rigor It was tough depending on your major. The core curriculum was something you had to work at. You could not just slide by.
Tips for prospective students Only go to the beach on the weekends. Keep your priorities in line, do not get distracted by the city. Try to experience as much as you can!
In three sentences It is a beautiful city to live in, but can be a distraction. The business program is strong, but could use some work. Overall, I loved being there.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is constantly campus police riding around campus whether it be on bike, foot, segway, or car. Also, notifications are immediately sent out when an altercation occurs.
Greek Life Greek life is pretty big on campus like all other school. However, one does not have to be Greek to enjoy their college time.
Clubs and Activities Most clubs go on adventures a lot.
Great for these types of students All types of students because there is a variety of things to do. Artsy students, healthcare students, business students, introvert and extrovert, hippy students, and beachy students.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus A lot of people go to Marion Square to lay out during warm months. Also, we have Cougarpalooza during finals that is extremely fun to keep our mind off of stressful things.
Bang for the buck It can be expensive, but it is definitely worth it. The quality of life there is very high.
What to do for fun It is close to a beach and you can lay out at Marion Square. The aquarium is close by also. At night, the nightlife is great with plenty of places to go and hang out. There are also many school trips planned such as going kayaking and stuff.
Food and Dining The food is alright.
Dorm Life I truly enjoyed my time in McConnell Dorm. This is how I met most of the people I know.
Academic Rigor It is very challenging, yet it is not overwhelming.
Tips for prospective students Go to class, even though you might want to head to the beach or Marion Square.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is good campus safety but it's also important to walk with a friend or a group o friends at night and to not be afraid to call the Cougar Shuttle which is a transportation service done by the school that picks up students at night if they need a ride home.
Clubs and Activities Theres a great variety of clubs such as the Quittich club, art activism club, to the psychology club to a meditation club!
Great for these types of students Great for the friendly, creative and curious.
Bang for the buck Even if you choose not to stay in Charleston all four years I assure you the friendships and memories that you make if you choose to make them will last you a lifetime.
What to do for fun Because the campus is immersed in the heart of Charleston there's a lot to do in a relatively close distance such as the a park called Marion Square where people go to get sun and hang ou, concerts at the nearby Music Farm is a great place to for a good time as well as exploring the shops and restaurants around King Street and Market Street. Also students can walk to the Battery which is the water by the pier which isn't the beach but the beach is a relatively short drive for those students who have a car.
Food and Dining The food at Liberty cafeteria and City Bistro are good with decent variety between pastas, a vegetarian station, soups, salads etc. but the best are the cookies! Everyone loves the cookies! The smaller cafeteria (City Bistro) opened up last year (2011) has allowed for students to get food a little closer to some dorms and to take food to go which is really helpful if you're a busy student on the go.
Dorm Life Dorm life can be awesome and quite eventful but there are also dorms that aren't everyone's favorite such as Berry, the all girls dorm which experiences frequent morning fire alarms. In fact several of the dorms experience frequent fire alarms where everyone has to gather outside of the dorm which can actually be a time where you meet and get to know other people in your dorm that you haven't been able to chat with before. My personal suggestion for a dorm from personal experience would be the College Lodge which was an old motel from the 70's that the school bought and changed into a dorm which from my findings have had a diverse and very chill group of people.
Academic Rigor From my personal experience and from stories of other students the academic rigor can range from easy going to very challenging but all is doable. Honestly, just make sure to give yourself the time to work through assignments and if you're encountered a challenge that you've tried to work through and can't quite figure it out done be afraid to go to the Center for Student Learning where other students tutor or to the professors during their office hours.
Tips for prospective students I would advise prospective students to mix general education classes with other classes provided so you dont get behind on your gen gives hike exploring what other topics have to offer. It'll be important to give yourself at least a little time to study everday and stick to it so homework assignments dont creep up on you at the last minute. Also, review notes and do homework in a place that you don't associate with your downtime (like the dorm room) because you'll likely find yourself distracted and end up procrastinating.
In three sentences The College of Charleston is an enchanting place to study not only because of the lovely, colonial architecture that's interwoven throughout the city but also because of the types of people who are attracted to come live and study here. A large majority of the students and teachers that I've encountered are of a creative and vibrant nature with interests in a variety of fields. The College of Charleston is a great place to go for an interesting college experience because of the friendly community feel like in a small school but at the same time you always meet someone new with a population of around 10,000 students.

Categories Comments Greek Life Greek life is very laid back and doesn't come off as hard as some might think. If you're greek, that's cool but if you aren't, that's fine too.
What to do for fun The most popular place for students is going down to the beach after classes during spring and fall. The Aquarium is a couple blocks away and is a lot of fun too. King Street has a lot of options for shopping and food too. Charleston never gets boring.
Food and Dining Meal plans are necessary for freshmen but more students tend to pick the options that include more dining dollars. The food itself isn't bad but like at any other college, make sure to switch up where you get your food from. Also, since the school is downtown, there are lots of great places to eat on King Street.
Dorm Life The freshman dorms are great and almost all of them come in an apartment style. Although the popular option is for upperclassmen to move somewhere off campus.
Academic Rigor If you apply yourself, the academics here are not too tough. The curriculum and general education requirements form the students to become more well-rounded in their education, no matter their degree.
Tips for prospective students Introduce yourself to everyone at orientation, you never know who you're going to hit it off with. Take classes that actually interest you. If you're looking for a creative atmosphere with a beach scene and laid back people, this college is right for you.
In three sentences The diversity is excellence here, I've met all sorts of different people. The atmosphere is really great, its definitely for people who like urban areas and downtown life. Almost everybody enjoys the dorms here.

Categories Comments Campus Safety During the day, you're perfectly safe. Campus police are constantly roaming around, as are the city of Charleston's policemen. After nightfall, however, stay away from the edges of campus. It's been the hot zone for stabbings, shootings, and rapes for years. Keep away from King Street and the streets branching directly off it as well. And MEMORIZE the locations of the police call boxes spread around campus. Once the emergency button has been pushed, campus police take an average of two minutes to arrive. Keep safe at night. Call the Cougar bus service if you need to.
Greek Life The Greek life at College of Charleston is a thriving chunk of the student population. They help raise money for the College, themselves, and worthy causes year round and often throw parties worth the sound ordinance violation.
Clubs and Activities If you've ever been an active, social person, College of Charleston's for you. Not only are you in the country's nicest city (Seriously. We've been rated America's nicest city for years in a row now) but the College absolutely loves student run organizations and events. The College will even sponsor you if you want to make a new club all your own for up to a $1,000 dollars. The only thing you need is a small group of your fellow students to back you.
Great for these types of students Marine biology majors must go to this college. College of Charleston is known as one of the best marine biology colleges on the East Coast.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The only location you need to worry about is the Cistern. It's a widely known curse around the College that those who walk across it are bound to never make it, one way or another, to their graduation.
Bang for the buck Along with getting your Cougar ID, your identification card for your years at the College, you get free access to the thirteen locations of ESAC (East Shore Athletic Club). Not all of the locations are in, or even near, the Downtown vicinity, but it's still a great perk. Also, free admission, is a first-come-first-serve manner, is offered to all College of Charleston students to every College of Charleston sporting event. Get there quick if you want a seat. Or join the Maroon Mayhem club, which has you pay a small fee for guaranteed spots at every event. As for transportation around campus (at night mostly) and the city, the College provides the Cougar bus service. Call the number and the bus will come pick you up and drop you off at a safe location on campus grounds.
What to do for fun As I've said, College of Charleston is at the heart of Downtown. There is constantly something going on, whether it be Farmer's Markets or roller derbies or Piccolo Spoletto. Not to mention all of the student-run organizations and, though it's not school related, the Music Farm.
Food and Dining Beware of the Liberty Fresh Food Company. And the sushi.
Dorm Life Though I don't live in the dorms myself, my friends at the College do. The complaints that I remember hearing the most are that elevators never seem to be working very well and that College Lodge is a good dorm for parties and not being able to sleep.
Academic Rigor Of course, the academic rigor of any institution differs on which major is being chased after. Personally, my experience majoring in Biology has greatly well-rounded and I would have to say that if biology is your passion, College of Charleston is the right place for you.
Tips for prospective students Tips: 1) If you commute, don't get a parking deal with the College. There are other parking companies in the city. Choose them. 2) Charleston and its surrounding areas really only have two seasons: summer and winter. Don't pack for fall or spring. Pack for the beach and sunburns and rain, and freezing wind and ice and rain. 3) Make sure to check out RateMyProfessor.com and LISTEN TO THE REVIEWS! As far as I'm concerned, it's your number one tool to success. 4) Be quiet and courteous of others in Addlestone library. WE'RE NOT JOKING.
In three sentences What makes a college is its professors, and College of Charleston's staff is fantastically knowledgeable and completely willing to work with their respective students to make sure they succeed. As for the campus, it's intermixed about the heart of Downtown Charleston. As with everything else, College of Charleston has its negatives, which can be simplified into three things: parking (if you drive), lazy elevators, and city traffic.

Categories Comments Campus Safety College of Charleston takes their student's safety very serious. Not only do they have campus security which patrols the grounds but there are also campus security boxes spread throughout campus in case you find yourself in a bad situation. You can even call campus security if you need a escort to your car in the wee hours of the night. With security being so on point, many of the students including myself feel very safe on campus no matter the time.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The college has a lot of historical sites right on campus grounds and there are even some good ghost stories about the campus if your interested in that kind of thing! ;-)
What to do for fun The college is right in the middle of downtown Charleston so everywhere you look there are boutiques for shopping, great restaurants to grab lunch with friends, and parks to hang out, do homeowrk or catch some sun!! The beach isn't to far away either!!!
Food and Dining One of the dining halls is Liberty which has whatever food your in the mood for and you can even pick and choose if you want a little of everything. Also it won't break your wallet especially if you have dining cash!
Academic Rigor The teachers won't cut you slack but if you put forth the effort and complete your assignments it isn't very hard. Just make sure to budget your time wisely and learn what you need to do to be prepared for each class because they are all different and some might need more focus than others!
Tips for prospective students 1. Budget your time (WISELY) 2. Ask for help (the teachers like to see that your trying) 3. Get assignments done early (then you have more time for YOU) 4. Apply what your taught from class to class 5. Talk to your teachers so if your late/absent you can explain 6. Get involved and meet people!!! 7. Get to know Charleston, it is pretty great ;-)
In three sentences College of Charleston is an amazing college that really caters to all types of students and people. The teachers are there for you; they want to help you succeed just as much as they enjoy watching you succeed!! Who could ask for more: teachers that make you think, classes that challenge you, and all surrounded by a great city that is full of life!

Greek Life I am not involved in Greek Life but many students on campus are.
Clubs and Activities I am in the Alliance for Planet Earth Club which focuses on sustainability.
Great for these types of students Great for social students who like to try new things.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus For graduation the girls where white dresses and the boys white suits. It is a very southern graduation.
Bang for the buck College of Charleston is definitely a bang for it's buck!
What to do for fun Go down to the battery, go shopping on King Street, or go out to dinner with friends at one of the hundreds of restaurants downtown.
Food and Dining The food was not bad but it was repetitive and needs to be changed up more.
Dorm Life Dorm life was not too bad except for the fire drills in the middle of the night.
Academic Rigor The College of Charleston is a 5 star school!
Tips for prospective students Do not be afraid to try new things and challenge yourself. Always set high standards for your self. Always do what you love.
In three sentences The campus is beautiful. The staff is extremely helpful. The city is full of history and there is never a dull moment.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Go to the beach, walk downtown and go shopping, walk to the harbor.
Food and Dining Food is great you can never get tired of it. May need a little old people food but it is not ever bad. Always has different options for food.
Dorm Life Dorm life is amazing you get to meet so many new people. Most people will say hey to you if they remember you from class. You can go to each others rooms and study and just have a good time.
Academic Rigor The library is a great place to go and study but definitely not the only place. People go down to the park and lay out in the sun to study. They may even go to the top of some parking garages and sit and study.
Tips for prospective students Always get to know your teachers and ask for help. Everyone is so nice and willing to tell you how to get to class.
In three sentences College of Charleston is interactive, fun, and great place to figure out who you are. The classes are small and the teachers get to know you by name. Also the campus is small enough for you to get around and not get lost, everything even grocery shops are in walking distance.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Carry a cell phone at the bare minimum and I wouldn't advise going out alone at night, right on campus you should be fine but if you go to the other parts of downtown you might not be as safe. Never had any problems and they email you/tell you in someway about anything locally that occurs. There's officers out and about at all times and they're really dedicated to keeping students safe.
Bang for the buck I think that the dorms and food plans are over priced for what they are. The only explanation I can give is that you're in the middle of downtown and it's expensive. Still think the prices are ridiculous, especially when compared to other colleges. The education is worth it though.
What to do for fun All sorts of Charleston based events go on throughout the year. There's a beautiful ocean to see and a beach nearby. Going and laying out in Marion Square or by the library is great. They did salsa lessons once a month last year which was a lot of fun.
Food and Dining It isn't bad. If you can afford it the Stern center has some good places if you have cash or dining dollars. Liberty and City Bistro are decent most days, meal plan swipes work at these two locations ONLY, everywhere else takes dining dollars. Breakfast is good no matter what, lunch and dinner it depends. They usually have SOMETHING you can eat. Around campus has great dining, again if you have the money... just right down on King St. if you're looking for something a bit different once in a while.
Dorm Life Eh... I had a bit of a bad experience because of all the construction they were doing last year on my dorm, hopefully the incoming students for that dorm won't have a problem now. Overall, they aren't too bad from what I've seen. Don't expect anything fantastic and breathtaking, it is a dorm afterall and some of it depends on how well people can pick up after themselves. Biggest complaint is that most of the dorms are wired, bring a nice long ethernet cable, and you can't control the temperature in the rooms so you just have to bundle up, bring a fan, open a window, whatever to adjust as you need.
Academic Rigor It depends on the class and the professor. You'll be challenged overall but if you're willing to study and seek help, there's a plethora of help and tutoring available, then you'll be fine.
Tips for prospective students Keep checking everything over.. and over.. and over.. Check for overlapping class requirements for general education and your majors and minors, you'll save yourself a lot of time. Look for a schedule right for you, don't take 8ams if you can help it if you are not willing to be up and moving, don't take late in the day classes if you can help it if you'd prefer to just work and relax in the evening. Talk and be open with your adviser and professors, they are awesome and willing to help you.
In three sentences CofC is in a gorgeous area with the campus fairly compact right in the middle of downtown Charleston. You are part of the city and it is fantastic.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is good here. They are quick to respond to calls and always seem to be hanging around campus 24/7. They are friendly and easy to approach if you need help. Be aware of riding your bike or skateboard on the sidewalk or the wrong way on a one way street. They are very strict about that.
Greek Life Greek Life is good at CofC, although its not as popular as it is at other schools. Greek Life is a great way to students to meet people who are interested in the same things. Fraternities and Sororities are very involved with the community here. They also host a lot of fun events on campus for everyone to enjoy. Students involved in Greek Life and students who are not get along really well.
Clubs and Activities There are a ton of clubs and activities to get involved in on campus. There are numerous sports clubs that include sports from kite boarding to lacrosse. There are also many activities and volunteer organizations for students to participate in and give back to the community. Green CofC is a great club to be involved in.
Great for these types of students CofC is great for students who are interested in arts and biology. Both of these majors are very big here, and have great programs that help the students get the most out of their undergrad years. CofC is also a great school for students to get involved with the community and participating in activities on and off campus.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus It is said that you should not walk across the Cistern until the day you graduate, if you do it before, you will not graduate on time. It is also rumored that Berry Residents Hall is hunted on the 4th and 6th floors.
Bang for the buck The bookstores on King Street and Calhoun street offer coupon booklets for free at the beginning of every year. The booklets are filled with coupons for many different restaurants, shops, salons, and much more in downtown Charleston.
What to do for fun There are a lot of sports clubs, organizations, fraternities and sororities to get involved in on campus. You just have a look for what you want to do and go for it. There is also a student organization called CAB that plans social events throughout the school year, such as Cougar Carnival and Cougarpoolza. They also run open mic nights, play movies, and set up concerts.
Food and Dining Liberty Fresh Food Company is the main freshman dinning hall on campus. It has a good salad bar, where you can make your own salad, sandwhiches, and serve youself a bowl of soup. The stir fry there is not bad either. The deserts are very good. There is a good amount of seating space and TVs near the front of the dinning hall. Stern Center food court has lots of different options like Quiznos, Chick-fil-A, Jole Mole and fresh sushi prepared on site daily. You can only pay with Cougar Cash or a credit card though.
Dorm Life Overall the dorms are pretty nice. The best dorm is Mcallister. The rooms are set up for a four person suite with a kitchen and living area. It also has an outdoor court yard with benches and a swing for students to hangout in. The next best dorm would be Liberty, which is very clean and is right above the Liberty Fresh Food Company, the main freshmen dinning hall on campus. All dorms are located very close to campus, which is a plus.
Academic Rigor Academic rigor depends what classes you take, some are easier than others. I also think it depends on what professor teaches the class. Talk to other students who have taken the class before and see what they think. You can also look on RateMyProfessor.com and see how high that teacher ranks.
Tips for prospective students Bring rain boots and an umbrella or rain jacket. It rains very unexpectedly here. Parking is very hard. It is easier to get around the city and campus on a bike, walking, or on a skateboard.
In three sentences College of Charleston has a very friendly, helpful, and approachable overall faculty. There are a ton of activities, clubs, and organizations to get involved with on campus and meet new people. Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety goes a great job for the students. Downtown Charleston is a little dangerous but the campus security is always around to help.
Clubs and Activities There are plenty of clubs but they are not as accessible as they could be. The athletics for this college is poorly organized and prioritized and could be enhanced greatly. I think that with this college being liberal arts it could work on this area.
What to do for fun There could be more things offered to do for fun. There are plenty of clubs but not a lot of athletic teams. Activities offered during exams are great. Athletic teams don't offer benefits like most other colleges.
Food and Dining Food and dinning offered at this college has pros and cons. The cafeterias are in close walking distance with great staff, but the hours for meals are hard to work with. The Off-campus meal plan is the best aspect offered for food at this college.
Dorm Life Dorms life is not as nice as other universities at College of Charleston due to the historic buildings. All of the dorms are downtown and built in the 1900s. There could also be more activities to get the freshmen in the dorms to interact. There could be more to get the different dorms to interact.
Academic Rigor The academic rigor for this school varies with each professor and class just like other colleges. A unique aspect about this college is the small classes that enables the students to voice their personal perspectives. Sharing your opinions during a class lecture is not always an opportunity with other giant classes at other universities and it enriches the college experience.
Tips for prospective students Incoming students should take advantage of the small populated classrooms. By using this to their advantage, creating relationships with fellow classes mates and professors makes the class more beneficial. Incoming students should also take advantage of the amazing historic buildings and landscape every time they step outside!
In three sentences College of Charleston is an institution that stands alone from all other colleges in South Carolina. This college is gives students the best four years of their lives with small, personal classes, devoted professors, and an enchanted historical campus. College of Charleston gives students an education while giving them the opportunity to find/be themselves.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus safety is spectacular. As a freshman we are given the number for campus safety in case we ever feel uncomfortable. Given that College of Charleston is in the middle of a city they will even pick you up from the library and take you back from your dorm if it's late.
Greek Life I am not a part of Greek life but those who I know that are part of it really enjoy it. They have a lot of mixers and hold other fun events between other members of greek life. Here at CofC Greek life makes up less than 15% of our students but that is not to say that it is different in the way it coordinates than other larger schools.
Clubs and Activities We have all sorts of clubs. Most sports have a club team (lacrosse, soccer, tennis, crew, etc.), habitat for humanity, student government, peace club, water sports club, and much more. We even have a quidditch club.
Great for these types of students Athletes, people aspiring to go greek, hippies, over achiever (we have an honors college), nature lovers, historic admirers, culture fiends, music lovers, beach bums. Pretty much anyone can find a niche here and be very happy.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are a number of unique spots here on campus. We have multiple beautiful gardens with little tables which are perfect to study in or even set up a hammock and relax. In the Stern Center (and education building) we have an indoor pool that has times for free swim, and the building also houses a game room with arcade games and pool tables. One special tradition off the top of my head is for basketball games. Each year we have a white out game when we play Wofford where everyone literally shows up in white. We also have certain movements we do to start off each basketball game.
Bang for the buck This school is worth every penny. As is said before, the staff is so awesome and there is always something to do around here.
What to do for fun The school offers many sources of entertainment. We have concerts that come various times throughout the year, baseball games, soccer games, basketball games, and on campus events (tie dying, oyster roasts, ect.) Also, being in the heart of downtown Charleston allows for a multitude of other activities. We have the farmers market on saturdays in Marion square, the Spoleto festival, patriots point for concerts that are held outside of school, and amazing restaurants. Here, ive even gone stand up paddle boarding and kayaking.
Food and Dining Each year we have more and more dining options. We have a number of on campus cafeterias that have a wide variety of food that is buffet-style. We also have an on-campus chick-fil-a along with burritos and sandwiches. Our meal plans offer a wide variety of options. The off-campus meal plan allows you to eat in various places on king street such as Caviar and Bananas and Moes. Now, almost every building has some sort of snack or food bar also which is fantastic!
Dorm Life Most of the RAs here on campus are more of a friend than they are a rule maker. The dorms are an incredible place to meet people. Since this campus is much smaller than other Universities it is likely that you will see a lot of familiar faces throughout your years here which is very unique. There are also many options for dorms and if you sign up close to the time you are accepted you are extremely likely to get the housing you prefer.
Academic Rigor The work is challenging in some classes and pretty simplistic in others. It is by no means anything that a person cannot handle. We also have a student learning center that is, for the most part, a very helpful resource here because it is free and you are one on one with students just like yourself.
Tips for prospective students I would say to experiment with classes along the way. Electives are they best way to become a well-rounded individual and there are so many options here. Also, join a club! I have made so many friends by doing so.
In three sentences The staff here is fantastic! There are so many classes available and the entire administration is eager to help students find great fits in classes for students. There is also many great opportunities ranging from volunteer work to studying abroad to a variety of clubs, and I feel so lucky to go here.

Categories Comments Campus Safety It seems pretty good. But DO NOT walk around alone here at night, even if your a guy, its not a good idea.
Clubs and Activities Its still early in the year, so no much has gone on yet. Put they are promising much more to come.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The cistern is very pretty! The cougar mall is nice too!
Bang for the buck Apparently for in state students its super cheap... But for out of states its a total rip off.
What to do for fun There are a lot of school organized clubs and fun activities.
Food and Dining There are lots of options on campus included Eisenstein bagels and chick filet. The cafeteria is also super good. I had red velvet pancakes for breakfast this morning!
Dorm Life My roommates are awesome, but for the outdoor dorms its hard to get to know your neighbors. Plus, if something is broken in your dorm...good luck getting it fixed.
Academic Rigor I came from a very challenging high school so the work load is not new for me, but I know some kids from less-challenging high schools who are struggling.
Tips for prospective students Its never too late to get involved! Most organizations are very welcoming.
In three sentences The campus is gorgeous! There are a lot of class options. There a lot of party's though, so if that's not your thing it can be hard to fit in.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck Activities such as family weekend are costly for the few things to do with your familly when they visit so best odds are to just go out with your family instead of doing family weekend.
What to do for fun Go out and people watch, hang out at the library, the park, the beach, or ghost tour.
Food and Dining Tons of variety of places to eat though City Bistro would be my last choice due to their limited amount of items on their menu.
Dorm Life I live in Berry its quite outstanding though the inside of the dorms can seem small and the walls are not as nice as they could have been (having holes and covered with plaster). But overall I would say apartments are the best choice.
Academic Rigor There are majors and minors for just about anyone. Even for those pre-vet majors you can still get a chance to get in a club that helps you get to vet school. Now thats outstanding.
Tips for prospective students Never go anywhere downtown alone! This is a big city and this is a open campus though its a great location near downtown doesn't mean it you can walk by yourself anything can happen. Also maps come in handy when your a freshmen...Trust me.
In three sentences Its a beautiful campus. There are so many clubs and organizations to join you can easily make friends. The college is quite lively.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Graduation is held on the Cistern, which is in the center of campus and the girls wear white dresses, and the guys wear white tea coats. If you walk across the Cistern before you graduate, you add another year before you actually graduate.
What to do for fun The whole city of Charleston is around you. You can walk down King Street for a day of shopping, or take the CARTA to the mall. You can also hang out in the three starbucks within a mile of campus.
Food and Dining The food is ok. Its good for cafeteria food, but not top of the line. There are however many restaurants a block away on King street
Dorm Life The dorms are spacious and fun to be in. They are all suite style rooms, so you do not have to worry about hall bathrooms.
Academic Rigor The professors are very easy to approach and reach when you are in need of help. The classes can challenge you but can be easy if you work.
Tips for prospective students Apply right away. Get to know the department heads because they will be able to tell you what do chose for your classes.
In three sentences The college offers many opportunities when you graduate the college. It is a well rounded school with exceptional and personable professors. The College of Charleston offers more than the college itself due to the location within the city.

Clubs and Activities It's pretty easy to get involved with something of your interest.

Academic Rigor Classes will, for the most part, challenge you.
Tips for prospective students Make sure your intended major is offered at this school.
In three sentences The school is small, and some feel that makes it intimate. Students and professors are friendly. Academics are average.

Dorm Life The dorm life is never boring with dorm gatherings that help to make new friends.
Academic Rigor The College of Charleston is a academically rigorous school but with the right amount of studying and hard-work, the classes can become less difficult.
Tips for prospective students My tip for prospective students would be to get to know people because that can make the transition for high school to college a lot easier.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Fair. Caution and common sense should be exercised. The campus is well lighted after dark and security is rigid for walking to evening classes and library.
Greek Life Not involved, but many national organization reside here.
Clubs and Activities Fraternities, sororities and clubs for every interest abound.
Great for these types of students History enthusist, pre-medical, fine arts.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Stepped in tradition as the oldest municiple college in the United States. There are many traidtions and historical events and peolpe who have touched this campus.
Bang for the buck A moderately price state supported school makes competitive tuition for in state students.
What to do for fun While the College of Charleston does not have a football team, there are many things to do with multiple area beaches. The campus is located on a harbor with boating, fishing, sailing, paddling and wildlife viewing. Cultural events and concerts are endless. Spoleto Festival in the spring is marvelous.
Food and Dining Marvelous 4 star restaurants throughout the city. A near endless selection of pub grub and college eateries near the campus.
Dorm Life I am not qualified to speak to dorm life because I have always been a commuting student and lived nearby in an apartment. The popularity of this school puts dorms at a premium. Apply early for these.
Academic Rigor The forgein language requirement is a challenge for most students. I suggest taking all laguage classes in succession without skipping any time as this, like mathmatics, builds on itself. For most majors, if you attend classes and labs and complete all work and prepare for exams, it is no more difficult than my previous school USC Beaufort SC.
Tips for prospective students Visit the campus and you'll fall in love with it and the beautiful historic city of Chraleston.
In three sentences A great location to attend school in historic Charleston, South Carolina. Small school atmoshpere with many faces and friends sharing warm Southern hospitality. Marvelous Chemistry and Biology departments which serve to feed the Medical University of South Carolina, also located in Charleston.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I don't hear about too many incidents on campus, maybe one or two a semester. We have an organization that sends out a couple people to roam the streets at night on weekends, and they watch out for any unsafe conditions that might be happening. If they see any, they can stop it or call someone else to. That's helpful.
Greek Life Not as big as some might hope, but they are pretty prominent.
Clubs and Activities There are 150 clubs and organizations on campus. You can find your niche somewhere, without a doubt. Or you can have lots of niches and lots of friends!
Great for these types of students Those who like the night life, Theatre kids, science students, those into the fraternity/sorority life, any LGBTQ people, beach bums. Not good for people who really want a football team. We don't have one!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Do not ever, EVER walk across the Cistern before your graduation day! Sit on it, sure. Walk across it, you're doomed.
Bang for the buck College of Charleston is rated as one of the most valued colleges in the state, for good reason. It isn't terribly expensive, and you get so much when you come here. The town is so lively, there's new experiences everywhere, and you live five minutes away from the Atlantic Ocean.
What to do for fun There's so much to do around the College, it's ridiculous! Not including the night life of downtown, there's tons of volunteer activities, clubs, organizations, free athletic activities like kayaking, racket ball, swimming, tennis, karate, yoga, etc. Not to mention, there's always stuff going on downtown. The aquarium, Market Street, the BEACH. The fun literally never stops.
Food and Dining Sometimes really good, sometimes really bad. The meal plans are awesome, and so so useful, meaning as long as you have one, you'll never starve. The food court workers are so friendly, they're wonderful.
Dorm Life The dorms have their ups and downs, but they're good deals as far as places to live downtown/near campus. I miss living in a dorm!
Academic Rigor It can be challenging, but if you manage your time well, you can get enough sleep!
Tips for prospective students Don't get distracted by all the partying that goes on. Take advantage of volunteer opportunities and all the activities that go on. If you have a small budget, stray away from King Street!
In three sentences The College of Charleston really does have excellent professors who are concerned with your education and getting you ready for the job market, along with guiding you to a career you'll love. Every department and program is fantastic in its own unique way. The diversity is less than one might hope, and the cafeteria food isn't always top notch, but I think being so close to the beach makes up for that!

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is public safety that you can call or go to for any emergencies there are also these emergency boxes that are on a pole with a blue light on top can you can press if you feel like you are in danger while you're walking on the streets. And if you ever need a ride and you do not feel that it's safe to walk on the streets, you can always call the cougar shuttle to come and pick you up. It is recommended that you try to not walk by yourself at night if possible.
Clubs and Activities There are many types of clubs and activities to do. One of the clubs I am involved in is Volunteer Corps. They meet once every week and go to different places to go volunteer at.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Apparently, there is a place that is called, Narnia. And there is a tradition that if you cross the cistern, you will not be able to graduate on time (within four years).
Bang for the buck There are always some type of coupons for food here like for frozen yogurt and cupcakes.
What to do for fun I am not much of a party person, so I usually try to avoid partying. So, for fun, I usually hang out with my friends, walk around the city, shop, eat and etc. This my seem pathetic, but my friends and I would just get together and play board games during the weekends for fun.
Food and Dining There are two places that offers all-you-can-eat dining. Food there can occasionally be good but after a while, you will get tired of the food. The campus also offer other places to dine at where you can either buy the food there with your own money, dining dollars, or cougar cash. And since the campus is near King street, there are always a variety of foods you can try if you do not feel like eating food on campus.
Dorm Life Dorm life also depends on which dorm you go to. There are some dorms who have the majority students who like to party way too much and can be very loud even during the nights on the week days. Walls can be quite thin, so you are able to hear what happens outside even if your window isn't open as well as the people that are staying in the room beside you and above. But if you are a deep sleeper, like me, this should not be a problem for you.
Academic Rigor It depends on what professor you have. Some do not take attendance and other do. But even if you do have a professor who do not take attendance, I recommend you go to class every day or at least try to.
Tips for prospective students It's always tempting to go out and party all the time but please try not to. Make sure to always keep schoolwork a priority but be sure to take breaks off and go hang out with your friends. And try to stay in touch with family.
In three sentences School can be overwhelming sometimes but I am so glad that I came to this school! It is a lot of walking but I don't mind since it's so beautiful here. The weather can occasionally be abnormal

Categories Comments Campus Safety Public Safety is always around on campus. There are blue posts all over campus and if you push the button on it campus police will be there in six seconds of less. They provide a shuttle from 11-2 every night in case you need to be picked up from anywhere as well.
Greek Life Greek Life is a part of campus but it is not in every aspect of the school. The people in Greek Life feel a sense of community and belonging but if you are not in Greek Life you do not feel left out. All Greek Life organizations support other organizations on campus as well.
Clubs and Activities If there is not a club at Charleston that you want, you can make it happen. They have everything from Latin Club to Running Club and everything in between. They also have alternative spring break so you can represent CofC while doing community service.
Great for these types of students It is great for any one really. If you enjoy nice weather and a city with no limits, this place if for you. The campus is open so you have to feel safe where you are.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus At graduation, all the girls wear white dresses and the boys wear tuxes; no gowns. Also, it is bad luck to walk across the Cistern before graduation. They say it will take you an extra year to graduate if you do.
Bang for the buck There is always something to do here. Campus puts on a ton of free events in the dorms and around the school so you definitely get what you pay for.
What to do for fun I like it hang out at Marion Square Park or walk along the water at the Battery. Shopping is always a good time since it is right outside my dorm!
Food and Dining There are plenty of options for on campus dining but it gets very repetitive. Off campus there are hundreds of places to eat so it never gets boring.
Dorm Life Living in the dorm is a lot of fun. I have bonded with everyone on my floor and we hang out all the time. It is a great way to meet people although it is loud frequently.
Academic Rigor It is not overly exhausting but the effort needs to be put in in order to get good grades. Just see your teacher for help if you need it. They are always willing to give feedback.
Tips for prospective students It is a lot of fun, but be prepared to work hard too. Teachers make you work for your grades but it is worth it when you get that paper back.
In three sentences The College of Charleston has it all; great faculty, refreshing atmosphere, challenging courses, and a city of endless opportunity. There is no other college or university that encompasses the diversity that is found here. With a myriad of things to do, one can never be bored.

Categories Comments Greek Life I wouldn't recommend Greek Life. You don't need it to get to know people here
Great for these types of students Stated above. The laid back smart kid that doesn't want to kill themselves with an impossible work load while in college. Learn and play.
What to do for fun There are endless things to do in Charleston, the only advice I would give is get out and explore! That's the best way to get the most out of this city. There are many different neighborhoods that all have a little bit of a different feel.
Food and Dining Better than most colleges I have been to, but it gets hard with so little variety. They usually have the same things.
Dorm Life I had the most amazing experience in the dorms last year. Most of my closest friends are those that I met in the dorm and even though some have moved on to other places there is still a really strong bond between us. College Lodge in my opinion is the best dorm, I didn't say the nicest (it's an old Moter Inn Motel) but it attracts a very interesting, artistic, and fun kind of person.
Academic Rigor As stated above, if you are not in the Honors College, you might find that some classes aren't as challenging either due to the overall calibre of student or professor. If you are looking for rigor, just make sure you check ratemyprofessor.com first.
Tips for prospective students The perfect school for someone that wants to live in a city, but not have something overwhelming such as New York City. It's a very close knit community as you will find that for having about 10,000 students you'll meet people and almost always will find some kind of connection. Life really couldn't get better here as you have the downtown, which is safer than most cities and you will usually run into someone you know and living off-campus in historical houses. It's a cool city where many people ride their bikes and skateboard and people are very liberal and green. I would, however, not recommend College of Charleston to students who seek academic rigor and prestige. Don't get me wrong, CofC is a great school, but I have found that students here aren't as serious about their school work. Most people that end up at CofC come here because they fell in love with the city and lifestyle, so school is not the utmost priority to them. It's a great school, but it can be very distracting living downtown.
In three sentences One of the most beautiful college campuses in the heart of downtown. There's a lot of history here, but don't let that keep you from thinking that Charleston is a sleepy town--there is tons to do. For being a Southern city, Charleston is very liberal and the professors I have had here have had a lasting impression on me.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I loved campus safety!!!! I worked late every weekend and there was always an officer to walk (or drive) me home.
What to do for fun You are in the middle of Downtown Charleston, there are historic sites everywhere, the beaches are a short drive from campus, there is plenty of night life, shopping, and eating locales. You are in a city, there is never a shortage of something to do!
Food and Dining The school's cafeteria is pretty decent, but there are also several options about campus for added variety. There are also so many eateries within walking distance that you will never starve...the freshman 15 may be grossly under-exaggerated!
Dorm Life I lived in a dorm, historic housing, and the senior apartments. All were great. The dorms, new when I lived there, were typical dorms, share a bathroom between 4, full kitchen at the end of the hallway, washer/dryer too. The historic houses were the best! each room was turned into a 2/3/4 person housing unit washer and dryer available, kitchen, and right on campus. The apartments were 3/4 student units, each had individual room, washer/dryer, and kitchen. Overall I loved living on campus!
Academic Rigor Gen ed courses are typical, but the major specific courses made you work for your degree! The professors are knowledgeable and create classes that are challenging and worth the time.
Tips for prospective students Buy rain boots and flip-flops!
In three sentences CofC is in a wonderful location, Charleston is a great place to live, beaches, shopping, and food! There is great academic variety, and the professors are knowledgeable and approachable. It is a great school to be a part of!

Categories Comments Campus Safety The Campus Safety is really good, there is cops all over the campus and in the dorm's lounge at night. I feel really safe there.
Greek Life The Greek life is not good. I know they say racism is at a all time high but at College of Charleston only the Caucasian kids get a Greek house and activities, the NPHC has nothing at all except one little house.
Clubs and Activities College of Charleston has alot of Clubs and Activites that are very interesting, it is hard to pick one because there is so many to choice from.
Great for these types of students This college is great for really smart and organized students.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus One of the main traditions of College of Charleston is to walk across the cistern whenever you graduate, until then you can not walk across it.
Bang for the buck It is really expensive to go there, but as i said before it is worth it.
What to do for fun It is downtown Charleston, their is alot of things to do on your spare time.
Food and Dining The food and dining areas are really nice and clean, it is just that the food is not always good and they should put a little more effort in preparing the food.
Dorm Life The dorms are really nice, every single one of them. I do not mind staying in either of the dorms in downtown charleston.
Academic Rigor The work is hard, and you have to make sure you stay on it: but it is worth it.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you come prepared because this establishment is very difficult but it will help you in the long run.
In three sentences This college is absolutely amazing. I give this college a A+. If your looking for a good establishment, this one should be your choice.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are Safety Boxes located around campus with buttons that say Push For Emergency. There are campus policemen and student health services. There is also a Cougar Cab Service that will pick you up when it is too late to walk home safely. NEVER WALK THE STREETS ALONE AT NIGHT.
Greek Life Only 20% of the College is Greek, so it's not mandatory at all!
Clubs and Activities We have an internationally ranked Quidditch team and a nationally ranked sailing team and lots and lots of basketball! But no football team.
Great for these types of students Great for students who appreciate historic cities with a great nightlife and don't care for snooty university titles.
Bang for the buck C of C offers great scholarships for great students!
What to do for fun Take a walk on the Battery or Waterfront Park, join a sports team, take a Zumba class, go to the gym, go swing dancing, shop on King St., hang out at Marion Square, eat out, or go to the Pantheon.
Food and Dining All freshman are required to have a meal plan. The two cafeterias, Liberty and City Bistro, offer fried comfort food, cereal/bagels/waffles, pasta and pizza and salad stations, and dessert bars. Vegans have severely limited options.
Dorm Life The Honors Freshman dorm offers a spacious single room with HUGE closets, loft beds, plenty of desk and drawer space, a microwave/mini-fridge, and a community hallway bathroom that you don't have to clean. However, the ResNet Internet connection is terrible and you are not allowed to have your own router.
Academic Rigor I am a student in the Honors College, and there is always plenty of work to do! The good news is, it is not busy work, and you will actually learn from it.
Tips for prospective students To get here: get that good SAT score! Once you're here: learn how to manage your time and how to not-sleep when an assignment is due. Because you WILL pull all-nighters on a regular basis, but the degree of sleep you do get is up to you.
In three sentences The College of Charleston has friendly, beautiful people and plenty of fun things to do. It has rigorous academics and plenty of out-of-state students to prove it is not a last-choice school. It is a large school with a small-school feeling, especially if you are in the Honors College.

Categories Comments Campus Safety sometimes walking around downtown at night can be kind of creepy so i always walk with a friend. but i've never seen or heard of anything going on on campus.
Greek Life I love greek life. we have a great variety of people and fraternities/ sororities
Clubs and Activities no matter what your interested in they have a club. we even have a quiditch team!
Great for these types of students it's great for liberal arts majors and anyone interested in biology or the medical field because it is so close to MUSC
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus the Cistern is beautiful and hosts so many large events but is also where people just go to hang out, study or relax. Also, a lot of people like to hang out in marion square. sometimes even in their bathing suits trying to get a tan.
Bang for the buck so far i've enjoyed my time there and love it. if you aren't a huge football fan then i would suggest touring and looking into it. we do have a great basketball team!
What to do for fun theres always something to go. i love greek life. i always have some type of event to look forward to and it keeps me on track with my grades because you do have to have a certain gpa. But outside of that there are so many shops, museums, galleries, music, and amazing places to eat. and of course the beach is only 15 min away!
Food and Dining the food really isn't bad. despite what some might say, its pretty good and has a ton of options. the only thing is that after a while you get tired of eating in the cafeteria. but there are so many restaurants around that it's not a big deal at all.
Dorm Life I love being in the dorm. I've met so many people and I love being able to walk across the hall and visit. Sometimes people do have unfortunate living situations and do not get along with their roommate(s) but i was lucky enough to have a great one!
Academic Rigor I came into college knowing that it would be difficult. If you have that mindset and study to the best of your ability. It won't seem so hard.
Tips for prospective students 1. Don't let your first semester fly by and wish you had studied harder. 2. Try and take classes that will count for multiple general education requirements. 3. Go out and meet new people, try new things, and be open-minded.
In three sentences It's a perfect setting. Everything is within walking distance and not to mention all the beautiful scenery. When I chose CofC I wasn't 100% sure about my choice, but now after my first semester I know I made the right decision.

Food and Dining The college does have a wide variety food in the dining halls. The food is good and the desserts are even better. But if you're tired on dining hall food their is plenty of restaurants downtown to choose from.
Dorm Life The underclassmen dorms have security/RA's at the front desk 24/7. you must swipe your college id to get in these dorms. No one is allowed in with out an id and if the student has guest in the dorm they must be signed in at the front desk.
Academic Rigor The professors here expect a lot out of their students but they give you the materials you need to be successful in college and life after college.
Tips for prospective students I love this college. It has a small town feel even though it is located in the heart of downtown Charleston. If you attend class and do the work you will graduate here.
In three sentences The college has a wide variety of students. The college is located in beautiful downtown Charleston, close to restaurants and shopping. The college may be big but it has a small college feel.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Safest campus I have ever been on!
Greek Life There are many sorority and fratenity groups of all kinds to join.
What to do for fun The College is located directly beside King Street which is where many shops are so it is fun to go shopping. The College has many athletic teams and they have games throughout the week and on the weekend so there is always a game to go to. the games that are held at fields off of campus are easy to get to because the college provides transportation to and from the games. The College is just a short walk from the Harbor; where cruise ships dock, The Market, and The Battery. Charleston also has a bus system called CARTA that runs throughout Charleston and goes to places such as The Citadel Mall, movie theatre, and the outlet stores.
Food and Dining The food is good but sometimes it can be a hit or miss. The College offers a variety of food choices and various ways to pay for it. The dining halls can get old after a while so there are other choices such as Chick - fil- A, Java City, Burger Studio, etc. They offer meal plans for the dining halls and dining dollars and cougar cash for the other food and dining places on campus.
Dorm Life The College of Charleston has many dorms throughout the campus to choose from. Liberty dorms are the nicest and the most quiet. The RA's on the halls really keep things in the dorm in order and the RA's are always doing activities through the week in order for residents to meet other residents. Quiet hours are observed from 8pm-8am which is really nice. the dorms provide washers and dryers for each hall or the whole dorm itself. There are study rooms and activities rooms on each hall of the dorms. Dorm life is really nice and the people are very friendly. The dorms are the safest places to live.
Academic Rigor The College of Charleston offers classes of all kinds. The classes can be easy to hard and also depends on what professor you have. The professors challenge you to do your best and expect you to your best. The library holds helpful labs for each class offered by the college except the physical activities to help students with difficult material. The academic programs is one of the best in the state.
Tips for prospective students Join as many clubs and activities as your schedule will allow to get yourself involved with the school and to meet new people. There are different class sizes for every class so choose the class size that best suits you. Do not stress out when you are having trouble with classes because the library offers labs for every class the college offers.
In three sentences The College is beautiful, fun and has the best academic programs in the state. There is always something going on throughout the the campus both educational and fun. Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus safety is wonderful. There are little blue boxes everywhere in case you are walking alone at night, or even during the day. There are security officers who manage the dorm rooms at night also. I always see a couple even roaming the streets at night. There is also a great policy if something gets stolen. They are always willing to help and they have great success rates.
Great for these types of students College of Charleston is great for people who want the feel of the city life and also for people who absolutely love to shop. It is ideal for those who love to party also. Overall, it could be ideal for anyone.
Bang for the buck Overall, the College of Charleston is AMAZING! I wouldn't want to change my decision no matter what. There is always something going on whether it is associated with the college or not. It is a really fun school, and if you are worried about partying too much, don't worry, there are always other alternatives.
What to do for fun There are a lot of things to do for fun. You could always join a sorority or a fraternity. But just being in the middle of Charleston has its perks. Shopping, or just a trip to the beach is always fun. The beach isn't far at all. Even just going to the Battery right down the street can be fun. There is always some kind of sporting event going on, and a lot of activities hosted by various clubs. There are free movie night Monday's where they play very up to date movies and even offer free food and sometimes prizes.
Food and Dining The food is good. A lot of people will say the food is disgusting, but I am going to be real. Depending on what kind of food you get, it can be really good. For instance, don't go into the dining hall and get a crab cake and expect it to be top notch. All of the food is cooked right in front of you, so it's not like it's mystery meat or anything. Also, there are tons of choices. On holidays, they have big feasts!
Dorm Life The dorms are great. They may seem a little pricey, but that is the price you are going to pay living in the middle of a city. There is one disadvantage though. The dorms aren't very open so, you don't really have close contact with the people on your hall. On the bright side, anyone can visit you at any time of the day or the night.
Academic Rigor If you come to the college expecting to work hard for your grade, then you should be wonderful. Some teachers are very easy, but some can be extremely hard. It is definitely a hit or miss situation, but that is like with any college you go to.
Tips for prospective students If you are planning on going to College of Charleston, I would suggest to get used to walking a lot. It is very important to make at least one friend that has a car. Get involved with as many things as you can. The college is so spread out that it is hard to keep up with what is going on.
In three sentences The college of Charleston is located in beautiful downtown Charleston SC. If you don't want to gain that freshman fifteen, it is ideal because of all of the walking to and from classes and just all around downtown. Everyone is very welcoming and willing to go out on a limb for pretty much anyone.

Categories Comments Campus Safety College of Charleston's campus safety is well organized and very effective. We have campus police who make sure every is going smoothly around campus during the day and mostly at night.
Greek Life Greek life at the College of Charleston is very small. It is a great way to meet friends and be automatically involved in the school. If you are not a Greek life person, then that's okay. There are so many other clubs to do to meet friends and be involved.
Clubs and Activities College of Charleston has so many clubs and activities to do just about every day of the week. There is never a boring day in this school with everything going on all the time.
Great for these types of students Every type of student can immediately get involved in something on or off of campus and have a great time at this school.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus College of Charleston has a status of the mascot, Clyde the Cougar, in a central spot on campus. One of the traditions is if you rub his nose, then he will give you good luck. Another thing students always say is don't cross the Cistern before you graduate. As a freshmen, you walk across it one way to represent entering the school. When students graduate, they walk across it the opposite way to exit the school. It is said that if you walk across it before you graduate, then you will add another year of college to your life.
What to do for fun There is so much to do at the College of Charleston for fun. The school is located in the middle of Downtown Charleston so there are great shops and locations to go to. Many students love just taking a stroll to one of the nearby ponds or parks to hang out.
Food and Dining College of Charleston offers two buffet style cafes. The school always has various other little campus run stores to satisfy food and drink needs of students throughout the day. The food in the cafes is always different and they always have a wonderful variety to choose from so students are continuously eating the same foods.
Dorm Life Dorm life is very convenient. The dorms are pretty spacious and offer a chance to meet new people right away. It is a big part of building community around campus.
Academic Rigor The academics are almost all based on the students particular major and interests. The classes are fairly challenging to enhance knowledge but not difficult where students are unable to do the work.
Tips for prospective students For someone who is looking at this school, I would say the main thing is to make sure they offer the major they want to be in. We have a large variety of majors but there are some that we do not offer. I also know that many people are scared to go to a school if they do not even know a single person. At College of Charleston, it is okay because everyone and every club is so inviting that students quickly meet new friends.
In three sentences College of Charleston is a school where everyone can find what they love and find a community that they will fit into. The environment of the school is peaceful, spacious, freeing. The classes the school offers are unique and professors that teach them are wonderful.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I never feel unsafe on my campus. There are call boxes with bright blue lights to call campus security if you ever need help.
Greek Life Personally, I am not involved in Greek life, but it is a very big deal. Many students are involved.
Clubs and Activities The College offers activities from anime club to sailing to snowboarding.
Great for these types of students If you enjoy being in the middle of a big city, but love the small town feel also, definitely consider the College.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The school is located in downtown Charleston SC. This offers many things for people to experience. One tradition would be that one is to not walk all the way across the cistern less one will not finish school in the normal four years.
Bang for the buck The school is a bit pricey, but I would not choose another school over it. It is a fantastic place of learning. Along with being in the heart of a beautiful city, the school offers many opportunities to push yourself into further learning.
What to do for fun The college offers many clubs and organizations that host many activities to keep on entertained. Things such as movie nights or block parties and even concerts.
Food and Dining It's a cafetiere. Well, there are two. It's not terrible, and the college offers other little places at which you can use 'dinning dollars.' Also the college is in the heart of Charleston, therefore there are fabulous eating places less that two blocks away.
Dorm Life A dorm is a dorm; however, I very much have enjoyed living on campus. I have made many friends and it has definitely been and experience living on my own.
Academic Rigor The College of Charleston promotes a deeper leaning in everything that is taught. Many of the professors I have been under insist not only what we are learning but why. Promoting the 'big picture.'
Tips for prospective students Definitely consider attending this school. It is absolutely fantastic. You will be challenged and you will learn loads of information that help to better yourself.
In three sentences The College of Charleston is a wonderful institution. I feel very challenged in this school which I feel helps me to learn way more than if I were to attend any other school. My studies here so far, a semester and a half, have been tremendous and I have retained much information.

Categories Comments Campus Safety You can stand at any point on campus and make a 360 turn and see a blue light for our emergency boxes. Also, our campus police are very helpful and friendly. We also get notified when crimes happen on or near campus so people know to be cautious and stay away from certain areas.
Greek Life Greek life is here but it does not take up a majority of the students. If you're in one, it's fine and if you're not it's also fine.
Clubs and Activities We have tons and tons of clubs on campus that are very easy to join and constant activities being put on by CAB (Cougar Activities Board)
Great for these types of students Art students, historic students, and students who love being outdoors
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Do not cross the Cistern before graduation or you won't graduate!
Bang for the buck CofC is definitely a rising school and with the price of tuition not being as high as many others, you're getting a great education and a degree from this school will look amazing on a resume.
What to do for fun Go to shows at the Music Farm, play a sport in Marion Square, etc... The best thing about being in Charleston is you can go for a 20 minute walk to the battery and see 15 historic things on the way.
Food and Dining We have many options of places to eat on campus but sometimes the food can be repetitive.
Dorm Life Dorms are very fun except for when there are people yelling late at night and fire alarms (mostly in the beginning of the year). Make sure you get along with your roommates or your experience won't be as great.
Academic Rigor Most classes are challenging and rewarding.
Tips for prospective students Don't overwhelm yourself trying to take 18 credit hours and work full time each semester. But don't allow yourself to take the easy way out and do the bare minimum. Find a good balance for you.
In three sentences We have an absolutely beautiful campus as well as an amazing staff. Class sizes are for the most part small and focused and the professors really do care about you succeeding and are always willing to help students who are also willing to help themselves.

Categories Comments Campus Safety CofC is fairly safe. There are officers at night and you can always have one walk with you if you feel unsafe. Some theft does occur, so don't leave belongings unattended.
What to do for fun The beach is 15 minutes away, shopping and restaurants are nearby on King Street, and there are always events on campus.
Food and Dining The food is mediocre, but King Street is close by and offers some decent restaurants.
Dorm Life The dorms are small, but you make many friends.
Academic Rigor CofC is fairly challenging, so make sure you devote enough time to your studies. The Honors College is a great option for students looking for a more challenging curriculum.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you don't mind the humidity. Pack a lot of layers!

Categories Comments Campus Safety Never felt unsafe on campus ever. In my two years here we havent had any safety issues at all. The public safety officers are typically nice and very helpful.
Great for these types of students History majors Arts majors Science Majors
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Cistern for sure. It is an area outside of Randolph Hall, the ldest building on campus and home to the oldest major at CofC, Classics. Upon graduating you walk from one side of the raised grassy platform in the cistern to the other, doing so before graduating is considered bad luck.
Bang for the buck Kind of. The school is pretty good, but being able to say that you graduated fromn COFC is the big ticket item. it isn't so much that the school is so superior as much as it is that you managed you graduate with a degree after spending four years in one of the busiest non-college town cities.
What to do for fun It's Charleston. There are more things to do than one can hope to touch on. The beach is close by, tons of shopping, lots of parks, art galleries, house museums and more.
Food and Dining Food is good at some of the cafe's on campus, the best feature though is the partnering with local businesses for student prices and the use of dining dollars in certian restaurants.
Dorm Life Dorm life is okay. It is a great experience that every person needs, but most of the COFC buildings are older and somewhat problematic. For one there are more students than the scholl can house. This isn't really the school's fault as the city will not allow the school to expand any further so there is no room for growth.
Academic Rigor The work load is pretty heavy here. Many professors expect a lot of their students, which would be fine if the students were capapble of affording school without needing at least a part time job. You definately need good time management skills to prosper here.
Tips for prospective students Always know what you want before you ask a question because the faculty will do their best to talk you out of needing their help. Don't take no for an answer, if you have to get in someone's face to get what you need, its necessary. The workers at this scholl don't respect polite people, you almost have to be rude to get anything done.
In three sentences College of Charleston is a great school for certain majors, mainly the humanities and arts. The science program at COFC isn't bad but it is mostly popular to the proximity of MUSC. The faculty can be a bit touchy and lazy.
