Categories Comments Great for these types of students Are you looking for a more personal college experience? Smaller class size, not being able to walk anywhere without someone recognizing you and saying hi? If yes, CSB is for you. CSB is located in a small, quiet town that is very close to a city, so at the same time we enjoy the relaxing St. Joseph area, and when need to go shopping or have a night on the town, St. Cloud is just five minutes away! It's win-win.
Tips for prospective students As tuition is always an issue, make yourself as eligible for a scholarship as possible; the Board likes to see good grades, an active extracurricular life, and VOLUNTEERING! At CSB, you will here about the Benedictine Values a lot, so if your application reflects these, you're golden. Read about them here: http://www.csbsju.edu/benedictines/values.htm If you're even considering studying abroad, make CSB/SJU a top college choice, as our study abroad program is EXCELLENT! Here, we don't ask you IF you're going to study abroad; we ask WHEN you're going to study abroad. I'm leaving for my France program in two weeks!
Bang for the buck Let's be honest; this is a private school, so tuition is going to be high. However, most of the people I know here are NOT from wealthy families! The majority of the students at CSB/SJU come from middle-class working families. Providing the Board of Admissions feels your transcript is good, you're likely to receive a scholarship and/or work study (wherein you work for the school, and the money you earn goes toward paying tuition). I had a 3.6 GPA in high school and got a $13,000/yr scholarship! Everything here is worth paying tuition, though! The courses are wonderful, profs are interesting and know your name, and the buildings and campuses are beautiful, SAFE, and very well taken care of. And because everyone asks, YES, the food here is delicious! You're absolutely getting what you pay for.
Am enjoying being here Everything I need is just a short walk away! The resources offered here and at SJU are excellent. The other students are great people, though there aren't too many alternative personalities here (i.e. goths, skaters, punks, bohemians, etc). I've met great people here, made life-long friends, and feel that CSB is offering me all the resources I need and more. The beautiful campus and nice dorms are definitely a nice bonus!
Am learning a lot Classes here are challenging, certainly, but we're not paying private school tuition to take easy classes! Of course, the level of difficulty per class depends on the prof and the type of class (101 vs. Honors 311), but overall expect to have to work for your grades. If you're willing to do the work and show up for class, it won't be hard. The profs are great and ALWAYS available for help, and with our Writing Center one can always get help with papers, so even difficult assignments are totally manageable.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students I would say that this school is great for any students who want to attend small size class. It is a good school and I believe all colleges are good, but everyone who decided to attend whatever college they choose will still have to study hard and have fun. As long as you are committed and know that this school is your passion college ,after reviewing the class size and knowing that it is private college, than it is the right one for you.
Tips for prospective students One of the best tip is to have fun and study hard. I'll advice anyone who is having trouble in class, should immediately seek help from their professor. As you may already have heard from other college students' saying that don't be afraid to speak to your professor. Also if you need more time on tests or need a tutor to help you on any course subject, all you need to do is ask. Asking others to help you is very supportive and makes life a lot easier if you need help just ask. Also when you are at College of Saint Benedict take all the adventure you have and just remember to balance your time. College is all about time management, too. If you are heading to college, too, hope you will choose the school that you feel it is right for you.
Bang for the buck Private college will have a higher cost of tuition, but don't worry. There are many scholarships, grants, and loans out there in the world to support and help you through college. It is your choice if you want to apply for them scholarship, grant or loans. I didn't think that I can pay for the tuition at College of Saint Benedict, but I did. I have apply and apply to as many scholarship as I can and I made it. I don't even have to pay for my first year in college. However, I am worried about my sophomore year in college, but I know that there are many scholarship out there. I just need to find it and apply. Everything depends on yourself if you work hard for it or become lazy and get to pay the full tuition out of your pocket and loans.
Am enjoying being here There are so many opportunities here that you have no clue which one to start with. It is your choice to the path that you want to take and many clubs that you choose to participate. I always believe that things will always be fun if you make it fun and enjoyable.
Am learning a lot Yes, it is true that I am learning, though it is hard. I am majoring in Nursing, but people don't give up when I say it is hard. Of course, everywhere that you go will be hard, but never give up. That is the statement for myself Never Give Up. Honestly, I believe that if you really is passionate about what you want to become or the career you choose, you can do it. The first semester was hard for me, but I made it through. However, I didn't pass by Biology course to continue on my nursing planned course, but there are still many option for me to choose and continue my path. I am still passionate about nursing, though I know that I am just taking my journey a different route before I come back to my dream. As I would say is that you will learn a lot if you choose to, but if not, you will say that you did not learn a thing.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Just as a little background, this college is known for it's same sex campuses; boys live on one and girls live on the other, but they mix up classes and cafeterias, so don't dismiss the school because of that. What you should take into consideration is the fact that you are in rural Minnesota. Saint Cloud nearby has a mall and theater plus anything you could ever need, but we are not located in the middle of a bustling city. If that's what you're looking for, you won't find it here. You will find forests and lakes, trails and peace and quiet. Of course there are parties (every weekend in fact), but noise and commotion are more difficult to come by during the week days. This school is idea for the nature girl/boy or the athlete who likes the clean crisp air and serenity. College is fun here too, it just has a more studious atmosphere than the well known party-schools!
Tips for prospective students Don't turn away just because it seems expensive or had a religious affiliation. I myself am only paying half of my education costs with the school's help, so financial aid is great. And as for this being a Catholic school, there's nothing really to worry about; no one is ever forced into being baptized or even going to church. EVERYTHING here is optional. Concerning the harsher climate, all you really need is a good pair of boots and a winter coat that can double for rain protection, and you're set. Trust me, your body gets used to the weather change very quickly (this from a southern Californian)! Also, if you're thinking of applying, get to know Matt Beirne, who works with prospective students and is a wonderful contact to have. He can get you any information you need and is good just to talk to if you're stressed or homesick, so definitely get in touch with him! You can find him through the school's A to Z Index.
Bang for the buck I was pretty hesitant about paying for a private education plus room and board, but I'm glad I did. I've learned how to depend on myself and live on my own; I've even done my own laundry for the first time while I was here! You get the four-year dormitory experience that you'll never have the opportunity for again, and you won't be all alone. The school really looks out for you here, so you have a new freedom away from your parents but still have someone making sure you don't fail your classes or fall off the face of the earth! They also have a rate of 90% of their students graduating in four years, so you always get the classes you need without paying for an extra year for a bachelor's degree.
Am enjoying being here I've definitely come to love the state of Minnesota through my school! The dorms are great and I even have my own room! People will think I'm exaggerating, but it's also true when I say that nearly everyone here is polite and welcoming, and the college has a very loving atmosphere. They try really hard to get students (especially freshmen) involved, and there are certainly enough opportunities to keep busy. A big bonus of living up here is the snow time! Fun doesn't end when the cold weather sets in; the school rents out tons of winter gear like sleds and skis. However, every college has its downside, and there's no avoiding it. My only complaint, coming from California and living in Minnesota, can be homesickness. Not to worry, though, because a quick conversation on skype can cure it!
Am learning a lot I can definitely say I am learning! The classes seem to blend into each other, with topics I covered in theology overlapping those I am learning in medieval history. 111 courses, which are the most basic classes for a topic like psychology and chemistry, are typically more difficult than their upper division counterparts, but my advice is don't be discouraged. The teachers here are excellent, and they are always open for discussion at the end of class. Another perk is the class size, averaging around 20 students a class, so everyone is big on open discussions and individual learning; there are office hours for professors, but there's typically no need for them as any questions can be covered in class. I have yet to come across any lecture-style courses with 50 people in the same room, let alone 200 like the bigger schools.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Great for students that are self-motivated, enjoy the outdoors, and enjoy living in a place where everyone is thankful and appreciative for the opportunity to attend such prestigious institutions.
Tips for prospective students 1) Visit the school while school is in session. This will give you a realistic feel for how you would fit in at CSB/SJU. It will give you an opportunity to see how incredible the campus looks and feels, and show you how close this community really is. 2) Talk to a financial aid officer. This will help decide/understand how you can pay for this extraordinary education. They will help make it happen, as I am living proof of that.
Bang for the buck If you are applying for these institutions, you obviously are aware of how expensive it is. However, I know from personal experience, if you have a decent GPA, are involved at your high school, and participate in extra-curricular activities, CSB/SJU will reward you. They are well known for being extremely generous with scholarships, and are willing to help any student that is in need. Also, students that graduate from CSB/SJU are GUARANTEED a job after graduation. That is a guarantee most schools dream of making. This school really does make you feel like they are spending every extra dollar on improving the quality of student life, which makes these schools that much better.
Am enjoying being here I love the sense of community that resides here at CSB/SJU. When you're a student here, you are not just one of 4,000 students; you are part of a community that watches out for each other, and always puts others first. It truly is a one-of-a-kind college.
Am learning a lot The professors at these institutions apply the material to everyday situations which makes the material that much more interesting.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Anyone looking to go live on their own away from parents, be independent, and meet great people.
Tips for prospective students Apply as soon as possible if you are for sure of coming to this school. Aslo apply for as many scholarships as you can!
Bang for the buck Like I said before, this school is very pricey, but it's worth the experience and there is always scholarships and Financial Aid to help. And guess what, there is at least 2 of everything since there is 2 campuses.
Am enjoying being here It's tons of fun on this campus. It might be located in a small city, but there is always something to do on weekends in or off campus. The people here always try to keep themselves occupied in some way.
Am learning a lot Everything here is great. If your looking for Minnesota nice, this is the place to go to for college. The view of the campus is beautiful and the atmosphere here is great. Classes are difficult but professors are always willing to help in some way. The only problem with this school is tuition, but Financial Aid will help and applying for scholarships is always a must.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck Tuition is high because it is a private school, but there is an incredible amount of scholarships that are made available to students. The majority of the student body is on school scholarships.
Am enjoying being here The people are so nice and it is a really tight community.
Am learning a lot Professors are always willing to work with students one on one and class sizes are small so you know who is in your class and ou know your professor. You dont have to rely on a TA.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students CSB/SJU is great for students who are fun, friendly and interested in getting an education that will question their values. If you love to live in a hospitable, caring atmosphere, CSB/SJU is for you.
Tips for prospective students Try not to go home for the first few (try 6!) weeks of school, or until our first fall break. The first weeks of school are the ones in which no one has any friends that are set in stone and everyone is willing to get to know everyone, and who knows--they might just be your best friend! It's important to stay on campus for that. Try to become involved right away--go to Involvement, the club fair, and find something, or a couple of things, that you can be involved in (and love!) from the very start.
Bang for the buck School is expensive. Normally, it would be just fine to work a lot for your education- I appreciate that I need to work in order to pay for it. At the same time though, it sometimes feel as though all I do is work. I got an amazing financial aid package though, and I know consciously that my life isn't as hard as it could be. The bang that I am receiving is worth the time that I put in working to pay off school.
Am enjoying being here The atmosphere on this campus makes it difficult not to feel entirely at home all the time. There is always something to do on campus, so it is hard to have a dull friday or saturday night, and being busy is a trademark of a student here at CSB/SJU. I cannot think of another school that could better match my lifestyle, values or love of the people around me.
Am learning a lot The College of St. Benedict is a place where learning and being actively involved are things that contribute to the way in which you act on campus. It is an expected characteristic of students on this campus that they study and work hard to accomplish their dreams. The classes are challenging, but you only take as much as you put into them. If you don't work, even if you may pass the class, you will not have learned a whole lot. This school is about putting in above and beyond effort in order to achieve your dreams.

Categories Comments Campus Safety the security office at st. ben's is in the freshman halls, and there are always security vehicles driving around late at night. once it gets to be about 7pm on weekends, there is always a security officer riding the bus with students. at st. john's the life safety officers are good at making everyone feel safe and checking on the campus regularly.
Greek Life there are two service sororities/fraternities on campus. one is the sorority alpha kappa sigma and the other is a co-ed fraternity delta phi theta. both put on a lot of events and fundraisers throughout the year and are great groups to be a part of.
Clubs and Activities if you can think of a club, we probably have it here. there is a ridiculous amount of clubs available for every possible interest. there are clubs about culture, dancing, hobbies, or just discussion groups. every club is always excited to get new members and usually has a chance to show off what they've done throughout the year.
Great for these types of students students who like a close relationship with the professors because of small class sizes will love classes here. those who like to be challenged by their work but not to a ridiculous point will thrive at this school. also, those who like to be involved in clubs, volunteering, or events on campus will have so many choices here. and since everyone here is very involved, they will meet a ton of new people.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus we don't really have a mascot for either college. instead, we have the rat pack, a group of guys that dress in crazy outfits of our school colors, paint their faces, and put on random shows throughout the campus before a big game. they lead the cheers in the student section, and pass out random things like pizza or popcorn to the fans.
Bang for the buck this college is on the expensive side, i know. but i doubt you can find a place more welcoming and fun with the opportunities you'll get out of this school. the kind of people that come here are all very enthusiastic and the amount you learn just in a day is amazing.
What to do for fun there is a pub on campus where there is at least one concert every weekend, and it's separated so those who want to drink are upstairs. on the other campus there is a coffee house turned nightclub where there is live music and comfy seating. there are constantly shows being put on my school like comedians, magicians, or events, and we are only ten minutes away from all the places available in st. cloud.
Food and Dining the food here is incredible. on the st. ben's side, there is a mongolian grill along with home-style, grill, and an ethnic foods station. on the st. john's side there is also grill and home-style, as well as deli and world stations.the food is always prepared fresh and there is a lot of variety, and the seating is very comfortable with booths and high tables like in a nice restaurant.
Dorm Life the atmosphere created in the dorms is so friendly and comforting that everyone feels as home. the ras here do a great job of being involved and making the residents feel secure, and almost all the residents become friends with those they live near.
Academic Rigor although my academic rigor rating is high, it's not because there is an excessive amount of essays or homework. it is because the professors here are always challenging you to push past your boundaries and think deeply about the topics.
Tips for prospective students embrace everything there is to offer at this school. there are countless groups and clubs that would love for you to be a part of their group, as well as so many volunteer and work opportunities to build your resume and experience. don't worry about finding a major that's perfect for you right away; most students here take a while to figure it out and explore everything there is to offer.
In three sentences this school is full of students who motivate you, professors who challenge you, and experiences that inspire you. the christian values of the school are evident, but in a good way and not forced on anyone. there is such a friendly atmosphere created that everyone feels at home, and there is something on this campus for everyone.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus is very safe and school security is happy to provide escorts.
Greek Life One sorority: AKS Service club-no sorority house
Clubs and Activities There is somewhat of an involvement cult at CSBSJU. Most students are in multiple activities plus sports, music, and rigorous academics.
Great for these types of students Highly motivated Go getters Extroverts and introverts
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Chapel Walk is fabled by Bennies and Johnnies as an indication of the likelihood of marriage. If a Bennie and Johnnie go on the Chapel Walk together, they have a high chance of getting married. The ties into another tradition of Bennies and Johnnies having a high marriage rate.
Bang for the buck It is a pricey school, but they deliver results
What to do for fun Swim in Lake Sagatagan Go on the Chapel Walk Ballroom Dance Club Intramurals
Food and Dining The food is delicious and there is always plenty of variety. The college makes sure you can enjoy a nice sit down meal or grab something to go.
Dorm Life The organizations on campus that deal with residential life are fantastic and they are always creating new ways to be involved.
Academic Rigor The programs are tough, but the professors make them enjoyable and they help out a lot.
Tips for prospective students Go to a class you may be interested in. Do an overnight stay with a current student in the dorm. Ask plenty of questions.
In three sentences CSBSJU is an excellent community oriented school. It focuses on quality of learning instead of a grade. The food at Gorecki is fantastic!

Categories Comments Great for these types of students People who would like to continue with sports or music.
Tips for prospective students Take a trip to campus. Talk with people who go there.
Bang for the buck They are good with scholarships and have several to offer. Between the academic scholarship and my music scholarship, the cost for me to attend St. Bens is the same as for the U of MN-TC.
Will enjoy being here The sense of community that comes with a small college is one of the things that drew me to St. Bens/St. Johns. I will also be able to continue with my sports and music from high school. The people also see very friendly.
Will learn a lot One of the reasons I chose St. Bens/St. Johns was the small class sizes. With the small sizes you are able to get to know your professors better and are able to more in depth and interesting conversations.

Food and Dining A lot of variety and two cafeterias to chose from.
Dorm Life Big spacious rooms with everything you need.
Academic Rigor Depending on the major, the courses can be challenging. The science courses are particularly hard but are very good and a lot is learned.
Tips for prospective students Get involved. The college has a lot of activities and ways to meet new people.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Each campus has their own security force. It is rare not to see the officers all over campus. The girls dorms require key card entry 24 hours a day, and nonresident's cards stop working at 10pm.
Greek Life There is only one sorority. It is a service sorority and they do not have a house. There is nothing in terms of traditional Greek Life.
Clubs and Activities The school offers a decent amount of clubs and intermurals but there isn't a whole lot of emphasis on joining.
Great for these types of students Catholic, Outdoorsy.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The school has its own bus that runs between campuses. When attending you learn the late night bus songs and the proper way to exit the bus. SJU has it's own beach and giant floating raft in one of its lakes.
Bang for the buck The school is pricey, but they offer a lot in scholarships in grants. The school offers so much to do that you are never bored. The quality of the classes are very good and the professors are very accessible.
What to do for fun The local area is very limited. There are not many places you can walk to except Gary's Pizza or Sal's Bar if you are 21+. If you have access to a car, St. Cloud is only 10 minutes away and has the basics of everything you need. Minneapolis is only an hour away and offers everything you want from a big city.
Food and Dining CSB dining is excellent as far as on campus food goes. They have a decent variation of stations. Some change everyday whereas the favorites stay the same. Each campus has a mini convenient store where you can buy snack foods or get a freshly made sub sandwich.
Dorm Life The first year dorms are a nice transition from living at home. You live with all your same gender and are provided with everything you need in terms of living. You do have to deal with community bathrooms but they're very nice and clean.
Academic Rigor They have different levels of academics. You can weigh yourself down with difficult classes or skate by with easy courses. I enrolled in the honors program but I didn't find the classes quite as challenging as I expected.
Tips for prospective students If you are not from the northern states, pack warm! You spend a lot of time outdoors. Research scholarships and financial aid early. The school has a large amount of money to provide but you have to find it early.
In three sentences It has a small school feel with the resources of a larger university. The campus is beautiful with many outdoor activities. The staff and students really makes an effort to make you feel at home.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Football games are big at Saint Johns and Saint Bens in the fall, it is a great time! Sporting events, rock climbing, and numerous clubs are just a few things to do! There is something for every student to enjoy!
Food and Dining The dining at College of Saint Benedict is fantastic! There are many options for everyone!
Dorm Life The dorm rooms at our university are rather big compared to some universities. There are many amenities on each floor and all floormates love to meet one another.
Academic Rigor The classes at our university are challenging. You must work hard to receive good marks but when you do it is all worth it.
Tips for prospective students Do a college stay-over! It was the best decision I made when choosing a college and my stay-over sealed the deal!

Categories Comments Campus Safety on campus there is life safety (campus security), there are always life safety officers walking around, the campus is well lite one of the joys about being away from the city, everyone watching out for each other.
Clubs and Activities many clubs ex: pre-med which i am a member it's a chance to meet others in your major and you can get information to help you plan your future. division iii in sports which i also am involved in with track and field. intraumeral sports, international clubs, community service clubs, german, to name just a few, there is something for everyone.
Great for these types of students students who want to learn, enjoy being away from the city, looking for a smaller campus with smaller class sizes.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus beautiful campus grounds with a lake close by a very calming atmosphere.
Bang for the buck you are getting a great education, and the saying goes once a johnnie always a johnnie in any conversation you will always meet someone or they will know someone who went to sju/csb.
What to do for fun there are always things going on to movie night, clubs, intramural sports, outside volleyball games in the fall and spring that you and friends have, ultimate frisbee, you can check out rollerblades there is a nice trail for biking, rollerblade or running that runs from sju to csb about a 5 mile trail. dances and theatre productions and concerts that students perform in.
Food and Dining food is great at saint benedict and also at saint john's but do prefer grecski at st. ben's, alot of variety at both.
Dorm Life dorm life for all new college students is tough, living in close quarters can be difficult, my first year i was in tommy hall we would have kickball tournaments with the other residential halls huge competition but a lot of fun, then second year patrick hall great residential father and roomate. lofting of the beds is good if you don't mind climbing on top bunk everynight, would rather have not had to loft beds but gave more room for television and fouton. but the dorms were great at tommy hall it was required that when you were in your room you were to have your door open, which gave you an opportunity to meet more people in you dorm.
Academic Rigor academics at csb/sju in my opinion is fantastic! you do have to study a lot and really apply yourself but the support of the professors is amazing! i have never learn so much!
Tips for prospective students if you like being around a city then maybe csb/sju may not be right for you, if you like to be away from the city and like smaller towns but not right at your door step then this is the right one for you. be prepared to meet a lot of great people, work hard it's not going to be easy you have to keep working academically and don't get completely caught up in the social aspect of college. join a club that interests you, that will get you to meet even more people, with roommates living in smaller quarters can be tough, just don't let the little things get to you, compromise and things will work out just remember this is new for both of you.
In three sentences college of saint benedict and saint john's university is an amazing college, i choose st. john's by talking to people that had attended college here, we talked about their education and experiences, i knew it would be the college for me.

Dorm Life nice dorms. the boys dorms are more lively than the girls dorms. there is a 4 year on cmapus living policy.
Academic Rigor it is a challenging school but if you were challenged in high school it will be an easy transition.
Tips for prospective students if you are going to have an on campus job apply the summer before you enter your freshmen year.

Clubs and Activities tons. too many to name. and it's simple to start your own.
Great for these types of students hard workers, friendly, relaxed
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus if you walk to the chapel alone with someone you like you will be married someday!! haha. we have our own lake with a small chapel on the opposite side from the student beach. proceed with caution... a lot of the time this superstition comes true!
Bang for the buck education is all really expensive these days, but there is a great experience waiting here at csb sju. it's worth it, but the economy makes me feel sick to my stomach about loans. just work really hard for financial aid and scholarships in general.
What to do for fun go to one of the many events that the joint events council puts on, come see the improv comedy troupe, the awesome fine arts series show, or hit st. joe for small town night life. a more city-like atmosphere is only 8 miles away in st. cloud or a short hour on the interstate to the metropolis of minneapolis/st. paul.
Food and Dining hands down, best food ever. we have a mongolian grill in the caf and it's all you can eat!!!
Dorm Life the dorms are really nice. they aren't air conditioned in the first-year areas, but they are all close and in semi-central locations, especially for first-years. it just adds to the community feeling
Academic Rigor each department makes the academics rigorous in the way they need to be for different subject matter. come prepared to work hard at what you want, and be passionate for it, so it's all worth it.
Tips for prospective students apply early, and go for all the scholarships. the smallest amount of effort can make a huge difference in how scholarships and financial aid play out. also come stay overnight! our overnight stays are fun and informative.
In three sentences the community here is unmatched. i really feel as though i am getting a quality education and i feel welcomed at the same time. there are a lot of unique components to the colleges and i enjoy that.

Categories Comments Campus Safety this is one area we don't have to worry about. there is an excellent security staff that is very helpful.
Greek Life it keeps you involved and social!
Clubs and Activities anything you can dream of and if it isn't offered, there is easy access to start your own club.
Great for these types of students people who put a priority on studying and doing well in classes and who also appreciate making connections.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus the school clubs offer a niche for every kind of student.
Bang for the buck with all of the financial aid available, it doesn't make sense not to attend a college like st. ben's which has a very high rating for graduation and job placement.
What to do for fun there is local transportation to many events. group activities are set up often to encourage social interaction.
Food and Dining with my priority in healthy eating i have a more high needs diet which the college can fulfill.
Dorm Life very active and involved with daily events.
Academic Rigor very difficult classes but there are tutors and teacher help available.
Tips for prospective students apply for financial aid early and apply for scholarships.
In three sentences excellent teacher to student ratio with a priority on treating each student as an individual and allowing her to explore her options in different careers.

Categories Comments Campus Safety it's an extremely safe place to be, since it's gated and away from pretty much anything else. campus security is very good about answering calls and checking anything out, but that rarely happens.
Greek Life there's no greek life at all, other than one service sorority that frequently mentions how it's not really a sorority.
What to do for fun there's not much to do since it's 20 minutes from the nearest actually city, and not everyone has a car. jec plans a lot of on-campus events but they don't cater to the whole campus' interests and a very small percentage of people go to these events.
Food and Dining the meal plan is great, and everyone has the option for the unlimited plan. the quality of the food varies with what you choose to eat, but it's usually pretty good. most of the dining centers have the same thing to eat every time (grill, salad bar, pizza).
Dorm Life dorms are nice sized and have sinks in them, an amenity most other schools don't have. roommate and hall placement tend to be problems because people switch rooms frequently and often find themselves placed around people they have nothing in common with and in living communities they didn't choose. the complete separation of men and women is traditional and can be both positive and negative at the same time.
Academic Rigor it completely depends on the department of the class and what professor is teaching. the science and math programs are competitive and actually challenging, but not too many other classes are even near difficult. many students often do everything but homework and it's really not a challenging school in general.
Tips for prospective students a lot of people enjoy the school, but make sure you're the right type of person. it's located on a lot of land and kind of off on its own, so you really have to enjoy nature and not want a city atmosphere. make sure you know your major sooner rather than later because it can be difficult to switch in/out of programs such as education and nursing.
In three sentences it's a secluded, small school which often results in the community ideal turning into more of a high school environment because everyone is always around the same people. the dual college system has benefits but can also be inconvenient for class schedules, group projects, etc.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The two campuses have their own security forces, but in sleepy Central Minnesota they mostly are helpful with car troubles. Saint John's even has its own volunteer fire department! Fortunately, they don't have much to worry about!
Clubs and Activities Personally I participate in the excellent, award wining newspaper: The Record, as well as the other two literary clubs: Studio One (Literary Journal) and Pseudonym (writer's club). There are plenty of other neat clubs covering a whole range of interests.
Great for these types of students Catholics or anyone looking for a liberal arts education from a different and innovative perspective.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The two campuses (merged men's college and women's college) are built alongside Benedictine Monasteries. This unique combination of two colleges with rich histories make for a very different college experience.
Bang for the buck Scholarships can knock the price of education down to that of going in-state as a MN resident to a public institution.
What to do for fun Saint John's is surrounded by a beautiful forest and lakes. You can go out hiking, canoeing, fishing, or just go enjoy nature within five minutes of finishing classes. Also the two campuses have tons of fine arts performances and club activities. There is always something going on the two campuses. Also St. Cloud is near by for shopping and what not, though with everything on campus, one hardly needs to leave!
Food and Dining There are four places to eat on campus and I have never had a meal where I couldn't find something good to eat. Also there are three coffee shops and a pub between the two campuses, which are excellent as well.
Dorm Life Since most people spend all four years in the dorms, they have high standards and reasonable rules. The RA's are friendly and everyone else is kind. The FRs (Faculty Residents) are also friendly and helpful.
Academic Rigor You'll work hard, but you are expected to learn more than the materials. They want you to start making connections, figure out why all the material counts and interlinks and how it applies to oneself and whatever one does in life.
Tips for prospective students Work hard: study and read the materials given and participate in the small classes which are often filled with thought provoking discussion. Participate in clubs--the two schools have tons of activities.
In three sentences Amazing place! Friendly and interactive classes filled with motivated people. Everyone is helpful, great for newcomers or transfer students like myself.

Categories Comments Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Johnnie football is an age-old tradition.
Bang for the buck You will get so much for your experience here. CSB/SJU offers some killer scholarships as well.
What to do for fun The schools have a Joint Events Council which is a board made up of students who organize weekend activities year-round. They throw together everything from weekly karaoke to dances to student band concerts to blanket-making. You'll never be bored.
Food and Dining Gorecki at CSB boasts some of the best food around. The Refectory at SJU is pretty good as well, and the best part is you can eat at either college with your meal plan!
Dorm Life Everyone is required to live on campus all four years unless you petition out of it. This means that the students get to know each other thoroughly and grow together during their experience here. This is no suitcase college!
Academic Rigor It's no cake walk taking classes here. You WILL be challenged academically. You will learn how to think critically and you will be well-rounded in all subjects, thanks to these liberal arts schools.
Tips for prospective students Take a tour! CSB/SJU has excellent opportunities for prospective students including over-night stays with actual students. And they pay for your flight if you're out of state!
In three sentences The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University is heaven on earth! Here you receive an exceptional education that doesn't just get you ready for the real world but influences you to be a better person. It has a tight-knit community feel you just can't find anywhere else.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Wonderful, call them whenever and they are happy to escort you. Be good and you could get free pizza!
Greek Life It doesn't really exist except for a service organization
Clubs and Activities There are tons to choose from, you won't have a problem finding anything to do, especially if you go to Involvement in the fall.
Great for these types of students Outdoorsy since we are surrounded by an extensive arboretum and lake and religious since there is an abbey and monastery on campus with really nice monks and nuns.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are plenty of ghost stories :)
Bang for the buck The school is great about finding everyone scholarships, it cost me about the same to go here as it would have to attend my local state university.
What to do for fun Concerts, sports outings, going to the beach and walks through the arboretum, JEC sponsored events.
Food and Dining The food is outstanding; there is a great variety and it is quite healthy. Easy to find vegetarian options.
Dorm Life Fairly social, the dorms are very nice, large and every room has a sink, though you are required to live on campus all four years.
Academic Rigor Depending on the major and the classes you choose, it is often up to the student how rigorous their classes end up being.
Tips for prospective students Definitely try to tour the campus or spend a night before if possible, you won't regret it.
In three sentences It's a friendly Benedictine college with a gorgeous campus. Located in central MN alongside a lake and arboretum, there is tons to do every week from seeing the MN orchestra to watching the famous football to lunch with a monk. The classes are great and everyone on the faculty is willing to meet with anyone.

Categories Comments Campus Safety CSB Security is constantly patrolling all of campus. If it's late and you don't want to walk back to your dorm alone, they will come pick you up and drive you back. If it's freezing cold in the winter and you just don't want to walk back to your dorm, they'll pick you up then as well. Rumor has it that they will also drive you to Coborns to go grocery shopping if you don't have another ride there.
Greek Life Greek life is essentially non-existent here. The closest thing we have to a sorority is Alpha Kappa Sigma Service Sorority. They perform various service activities around campus and in the surrounding St. Joe community.
Clubs and Activities The only club I was involved with this past year was the Climbing Club. I also volunteered as a Student Ambassador. There are plenty of things to get involved with, though, if you want to do that. There is a fair around October in the athletic center where every club can set up a table to advertise what they do. Students are free to browse the tables and sign up for whatever they would like to participate in.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus At some point, every Bennie and Johnnie should do the Chapel Walk. There is a trail around Lake Sag at St. John's that leads to the Stella Marais Chapel about half a mile away. Legend has it that the first Bennie or Johnnie you walk to the chapel with is the one you're going to marry.
Bang for the buck The teachers are excellent. The small classes (all capped at no more than 35) allow for plenty of personalized attention. Overall, I do love this school, it's a great place to be, but at around $45,000 a year, it's a bit expensive.
What to do for fun I love the rock wall at St. John's. Rock climbing is an awesome new hobby to pick up, and the students who run it are more than willing to help you learn. St. Ben's has a bike rental system as well, which is easy to use if you don't have your own bike on campus. We have volleyball, basketball, tennis, and soccer courts and fields as well. You can rent playing materials from the campus rec desk using your ID. Rollerblades are also available for rent. If it's warm enough, swimming, canoeing, or kayaking at Lake Sag are also options.
Food and Dining The food here is beyond what I expected for college dining. There are plenty of options from salads to burgers and fries to pasta. They have plenty of vegetarian options as well. You'll find a lot more than tater tots and chicken nuggets here. The dining facilities are always clean as well, and the set-up makes it easy to meet and talk to friends over lunch or dinner. My only complaint is that the meals tend to go on a rotating schedule, so every couple of weeks, you'll start to see the same things. That gets a little old after a while, but on the bright side, there are three other dining options if you're not up for Gorecki food!
Dorm Life Dorm life is great! CSB/SJU recently installed a four-year residency policy, which means you are required to live on campus all four years. While that does seem a little annoying, it keeps you in the middle of all things college for your entire time here. The first year and sophomore dorms at St. Ben's are in the middle of campus, so you're always in the middle of everything. It's easy to get to know the people on your floor, and the RAs are constantly planning floor dinners, movie nights, and other events for students to get to know each other better.
Academic Rigor Some classes are easy, some are more difficult. I'm giving it a five star rating not because classes are insanely hard to follow or because the homework is impossible to do. I'm giving it five stars because the classes have challenged me enough without making me feel like there is no way I'll be able to pass.
Tips for prospective students Come for an overnight visit! That was what sealed the deal for me. You get to stay with a current student and see what daily life is like for them. You'll also have the opportunity to sit in on a class to see what that is like. You can also talk with a coach if you're interested in doing sports on campus.
In three sentences CSB/SJU is a great school. The professors, administrators, and other employees are always willing to help you with anything. The atmosphere is friendly, helpful, and all around welcoming.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus Safety is very efficient, maintaining excellent security and making very good time on emergency responses.
Greek Life There is none- the campus life program attempts to fill the role of sororities and fraternities, and it does a pretty good job at getting the sense of community without the danger of hazing or rejection.
Clubs and Activities There is a huge variety of student clubs on campus, all student-run with open elections.
Great for these types of students Every personality is embraced as far as I've seen. My only caution is that if you are considering CSB/SJU, you should be determined- the classes are demanding and expensive.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are many unusual places on both campuses: both contain Benedictine monasteries, numerous allegedly haunted locations, lakes, secluded buildings, and underground passages.
Bang for the buck CSB/SJU is a bit on the pricey side and there are a lot of generals spread over the departments, but I think it's worth it. It is well-known for the strength and rigor of its major programs, occupies a beautiful area, offers innumerable opportunities for mentorship, and gives you an impressive advantage in your graduate career in the form of the Link. The link is the immense network of Johnnies and Bennies that have made their marks on the world and are eager to help their fellow classmates in their careers by providing advice, recommendations, or employment. The Link is perhaps the greatest perk of going to school here.
What to do for fun There are tons of things going on to keep you entertained: There are regular concerts and dances, dozens of sports both intramural and competitive, weekly karaoke, hundreds of fine arts events, a lot of beautiful scenery to explore, and two massive libraries that represent the largest private collection in the state. There is no shortage of things to do
Food and Dining The food at CSB/SJU is varied and of reasonable quality; there are 6 venues between the two campuses that operate on the school dining plan, and several others that accept cash both on campus and in the nearby towns. The two main dining halls have quality food, but can suffer from lack of variety.
Dorm Life CSB/SJU is very conscious of the importance of domestic well-being to academic performance and invests substantial effort into making sure that campus life is healthy and enjoyable. Every floor includes a faculty resident and at least 3 resident assistants to ensure domestic peace and a fun environment. The dorm rooms themselves are fairly spacious and comfortable, though in the freshman dorms the bathrooms can be a little crowded.
Academic Rigor The courses here are challenging and rewarding; even entry-level classes can be difficult, and there are even more challenging honors courses available in every department. Every science and math class includes a rigorous lab that consumes at least as much time as spent in the classroom. You cannot breeze through any class at CSB/SJU. However, the professors are as a whole very talented and accommodating to your education, and the required freshman course First Year Seminar is an excellent preparatory course.
Tips for prospective students If you are looking at pursuing a music, education, or nursing major, be aware that those are four-year programs and you have to get started on them right away if you want to graduate on time without transfer credits. They make up for this in their quality, however. For prospective Johnnies, know the cultures of the freshman dorms: Thomas Aquinas Hall is generally very loud, party-like, and active. Mary Hall is much quieter and more mellow in general.
In three sentences CSB/SJU is a fantastic setting for growth, both academic and personal. Both campuses contain Benedictine communities that really provide a sense of stability and welcome to the students, but the colleges are not overpoweringly religious- it's there for you if you want it. There is a great variety of campus activities, beautiful scenery, and interesting and challenging courses available here.

Categories Comments Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Chapel Walk, Johnball, Johnies vs Tommies, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Watab. Tons of awesome, weird traditions at St Johns.
Bang for the buck Johnies take care of Johnies. That should be enough for anyone to come here. The connections this school provides are invaluable for life. The personal attention you can receive is unparallelled.
What to do for fun Where to start! There is always something to do. From leadership training seminars to comedians to concerts, every weekend is filled with a variety of things for all interests. Playing and watching sports are two huge pastimes here as well as some awesome outdoor nature activities.
Food and Dining This is where this college shines. Alright I love the food at both campuses. You can't beat 5 cafeterias with hours from like 7 to midnight. The variety and quality of the food is totally legit.
Dorm Life Hint: Do not room with a Nebraskan under any circumstances lol. RA's and FRs are way cool. To be honest each dorm has its own kind of community and activities. Our floor was yui-gui-yo :P. IKR wth. But overall it is amazing.
Academic Rigor WOW, ok let me tell you know; you have to work your but off to succeed here. Academic excellence is expected and the first couple weeks will be a blur. Just work hard at learning the materiel and you will do fine.
Tips for prospective students Be prepared for some intense studying during the week and some crazy weekends. Don't worry about having nothing to do because even if there was no homework at all, there would always be something to do. P.S. pack light.
In three sentences The beauty and warmth of both campuses are enough reason to come here. If there is one word that would describe Saint John's it would be community. Students, alumna, and faculty are all a part of a team on the beautiful campus of Saint John's/St. Bens.,

Categories Comments Food and Dining So far, the food I've had tasted great and the variety wasn't bad either. I'll have trouble not getting fat at college.
Academic Rigor It sort of depends on how hard you studied in high school. My first year schedule will be very challenging.
In three sentences The campus is pristine and the buildings are all beautiful, but the scenery is better. It includes a lake and 3500 acres of forests. This along with the friendly faculty made my decision an easy one.

Categories Comments Campus Safety CSB/SJU is one the safest campuses. There are Life Safety security guards on duty 24/7 to help you with anything whether it's dark and you need someone to walk you to your car or something as simple as getting locked out of your room.
Great for these types of students CSB/SJU has a very great study abroad program. If you're thinking about studying abroad anywhere, you should definitely check it out.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus SJU is very unique for that fact that they have their own Johnny bread which are delicious. SJU also host a Maple Syrup Festival every year where you can get tours, learn about how sap collection works, watch tapping demonstrations, historical talks, go on a horse-drawn wagon rides and more.
Bang for the buck SJU is very unique for that fact that they have their own Johnny bread which are delicious.
What to do for fun Besides all the activities and clubs you can sign up for, there is always something to do at CSB/SJU. If you feel like taking a dip, over at SJU, Stumpf Lake and Lake Sagatagan is available for swimming and canoeing. You can always work out at the workout centers available on both campuses. There is the also the arboretum where you can enjoy the best of nature or if you're full of school spiriit, you can always go watch a Johnny or Bennie game ( girls are call Bennies, and boys are called Johnnies). There is always tons of and dances and events that occurs through out the year as well such as: comedian guest appearances, cultural festivals, open mikes, blood drives, and so much more.
Food and Dining CSB/SJU is vey unique in the fact that it has two campuses! That means two of everything, and yes, that means more places to eat. There is the buffet-style cafeteria Gorecki on the women's campus is where oven baked pizza and pasta is available daily as well as fresh salad and make your own wraps and sandwiches, and much more. There's also Mc Glyenn where freshly grilled burgers and hand made wraps are served fresh. And if you head over to the men's campus, you have the Refractory where you can get anything from barbeque wings to roast beef and tacos. There is also Sexton, the best place to go for chocolate muffins and curly fries and more!
Dorm Life The dorms at CSB/SJU are very nice compare to other colleges where as first-years you can dorm in a triple or double room. Once you're a sophomore, there are six-person suites available as well. And if you're a bit more private, you can even get a single with your own personal bath. Once you become a junior or senior, you get to enough the luxury of apartment dorms with a full kitchen and bath. Everyone at CSB/SJU is super friendly and everyone basically knows everyone down the halls.
Academic Rigor CSB/SJU offers really fun and creative courses that really challenges you to show what you can bring to the table. For instance, the sound of a three hour biology lab sounds unpleasant but you have to experience it for yourself to realize that time flies by incredibly fast when one of your lab involves extracting sap from maple trees. Also even though classes are difficult, there is always help available everywhere. You can always go to the writing centers for help on your papers and the professors are very willing to help. They always give out a syllabus which includes their schedule so meeting up with a prof. is very simple. CSB/SJU doesn't just teaches students, they provide you with the tools and skills you need for the future.
Tips for prospective students There is always so much going on at CSB/SJU that its real easy to become overwhelmed with all the clubs and activities the college has to offer. The best way to handle this is to choose and get involved in a few clubs and activities that really interest you which may relate to what your major will be. Therefore, you will not only be having fun but at the same time, you're learning more about what you're passionate about.
In three sentences The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University are liberal arts colleges with great passion in teaching and inspiring students. Going to school there is like opening the pages a new book and leafing through pages to get a sniff of the smell. Every year is full of new memories and excitement waiting to unfold.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Life Safety and CSB Security are easily accessible and patrol on weekends. i always feel safe on campus.
Greek Life None except for a volunteer work sorority, however, they don't live in a special house or anything.
Clubs and Activities Lots of intramurals and club teams!! Even if your not an athlete you can find something. Lots of clubs--there's too many, I wish i could join them all!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Riding the Link bus between campuses. Hate it or love it, its our unique thing, and we love singing songs while riding home from the bar.
What to do for fun There are ALWAYS events on campus. Fun weekend activities, and speakers/events during the week. There's so much to do you can't possibly go to everything. Sports games are fun, especially the infamous Johnnie football games. So much spirit.
Food and Dining You won't find a better cafeteria! Just swipe your card, and eat everything you can. The food is excellent and the culinary staff is always improving food and trying new recipes. I love both CSB and SJU cafeterias!
Dorm Life Girls dorms are very nice! Boys' are average. On campus living builds community and you feel part of the college, you're not living on your own.
Academic Rigor Everyone who attends CSB/SJU is determined and willing to work hard. They are focused and value their education.
Tips for prospective students Visit with professors, sit in on classes and stay overnight with a student. Get a feel for what its like to be a student there, don't just look at statistics.
In three sentences CSBSJU has a unique sense of community that will stay with you the rest of your life: once a bennie or johnnie, always a bennie/johnnie. Its a beautiful place, where you'll get a well-rounded education, something that future employers will note. Attending CSB/SJU is a college experience, not just an education; there is so much to do on campus and so much to be a part of.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I work for campus security at the College of Saint Benedict and I must say that the officers are nice and genuine people but do not get on their bad side! The security at Saint John's is much more strict than at St. Ben's!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are nuns and monks all across campus and there is a strong Catholic faith on the campus. Football is king in the fall and Pine Stock is a fun yearly tradition!
Bang for the buck You do get a lot of great things at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University but there are also a lot of little hidden fees here and there and things really begin to add up if you aren't careful with your money!
What to do for fun Go to sporting events, hang with the girls, go out to parties, watch movies, find a Johnnie/Bennie and enjoy your time!
Food and Dining The food is good - too good. Hence the Bennie 20.
Dorm Life Living is all girls, and all boys. Get used to it. Girls will make drama and boys will be boys.
Academic Rigor The school is very challenging and it will push you if you do all your work as required.
Tips for prospective students Do well in High School and on your ACT to get a lot of scholarship money!
In three sentences It is a very challenging school. Make friends and enjoy your time here because most people say they miss it when they leave. I found the school to be a tough adjustment at first.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I have always felt safe around campus. There is plenty of campus security roaming around campus and there is a special number to call if you feel in danger or want a ride/escort from one point of the campus to another.
Great for these types of students This college offers very small class sizes and personalized attention. There are only about 2,000 women and 2,000 men on campus.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus In the Sexton building at SJU there is a secret hide out place with couches. Its tricky to find but its a great quiet place to hang out and to overlook those in Sexton.
Bang for the buck All Colleges and Universities are very expensive! I feel as if I really get a lot out of my school for the money.
What to do for fun There is plenty to do at CSB/SJU for fun. Almost every weekend there are free events offered such as comedy shows, dances and live music. I absolutely love to attend CSB/SJU's very own Attention Starved Children shows. They are an improv group that perform for students every so often. CSB/SJU also offers bikes and sports equipment to rent such as volleyballs, basketballs, tennis equipment, etc. There is also movies available to borrow for free at the libraries on either campus. There are tons of sports and clubs offered at CSB/SJU as well to keep students busy.
Food and Dining The food and dining is absolutely DELICIOUS at CSB/SJU! I can't wait to go back this fall, and one of the main reasons is because of the food. CSB/SJU offers five different dining options. At CSB Gorecki is the main dining cafeteria. There is also McGlynns which is a fast food option, offering subs, hamburgers, chicken strips, etc. Good to Go offers subs, soups and other quick food you can grab before heading to class. There is also O'Connels that serves coffee, tea and alcoholic beverages. At St. Johns the Reef is the main cafeteria and Sexton is the fast-food option there. There is also a bar on campus at SJU as well.
Dorm Life CSB/SJU currently requires students to live on campus all four years. I am a student worker with the Residential Life department and we are always available at the office to answer any questions, either over the phone, email or in person. CSB/SJU offers amazing living situations and currently is building beautiful new town homes which will be open Fall of 2012. There is plenty of housing for every student and many options of living.
Academic Rigor The classes are challenging but the professors are always available to help. Most are quick to respond to emails or have numerous office hours available for one on one help. Many of the classes I took my first year were very fun and interesting. There was never a dull moment.
Tips for prospective students If you are considering CSB/SJU, I can not say enough of how great the college is! One of the main problems I encountered with the school before attending was the bus. I was concerned about having to take it back and forth from each campus to get to my classes. I soon realized while attending that it was not a problem. I was never late to class because of the bus and it is such a short ride. Riding the bus was a chance to relax for a little bit before class and to catch up with friends.
In three sentences I absolutely fell in love with the College of Saint Benedict during my first year of attendance. I have had the most amazing experience through out the beginning of my journey and look forward to what comes next. The campus is gorgeous, the staff is helpful and the fellow Bennies and Johnnies are friendly.

Categories Comments Campus Safety So far, so good. Their presence is constant and they are very easy to reach. Thankfully, I haven't needed their assistance but I know that they are always there for any help that I need. In order to get into many places an ID card is needed which makes things a lot safer.
Clubs and Activities As I said earlier, the clubs and activities are endless here. Each day we are inundated with emails on new clubs or new opportunities. Also, we have events or activities just about every night for us to become closer as a community.
Great for these types of students All of them! If you are willing to work hard then you will have to work hard and get rewarded. If you are somebody looking to have a great time, I guarantee that you will have a great time, too!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus On the St John's campus there is a chapel that is on the other side of Lake Sagatagan that is rather famous for the idea that if a CSB student and SJU student walk there together they will marry someday. Also, both schools are known as being two of the most haunted campuses in the Upper Midwest.
Bang for the buck The price of this college is extremely expensive but between the financial aid that many of us are given and all of the amenities, it all becomes worth it. As I said earlier, there is no school like it in the states and the price is understandable. Some of the amenities are free laundry room usage, food, gym membership, and many free events just to name a few.
What to do for fun The options are endless! There are countless clubs, intramurals, sports, and activities for all students. The President of SJU even said that if the club you want to be in is not in existence he will personally fund the inception of the club. Also, there are many lounges for people to just study together or hang out.
Food and Dining The food here is very good, specifically Gorecki Dining Hall. Girls are given unlimited amounts of punches or access to the buffet. Another benefit is that it is very easy to swipe your ID card to get in. Having multiple places on either campus makes it very nice, too.
Dorm Life The dorms here are very spacious, including plenty of storage space. Having a sink in my room is incredible for me because it isn't a brawl to get to the sinks in the bathrooms. Also, I love the open door policy which means that most every door in the dorm will be open if somebody is in the room. This makes everything so much more friendly.
Academic Rigor All professors at this school will try their very best to challenge you. Although much of the homework is individualistic every professor is willing to help you through any question and the community that you become part of makes all the difference.
Tips for prospective students Get excited. This college is unlike any other in the fact that everyone works together. Make sure to always ask questions. Everyone on campus is always willing to help you with anything you need. Last but not least: put yourself out there!
In three sentences St. Ben's is a community that is unlike any other around the state and quite possibly the country. It is a place for growth not simply mentally but also spiritually. In only one week here I have already felt more part of family than I have anywhere else in my life.

Categories Comments Greek Life Don't have greek life here; school policy. For those looking for a party, they are still out there... Just not represented through sororities and fraternities.
Great for these types of students If you're looking for a school you can receive a good education, with many opportunities to travel abroad or explore your career field, this is for you. As far as the size of the school goes, make sure you know it's small! You will meet new friends everyday, but you will also get to see your best friends on a regular basis :)
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are crazy new places you find every year. It all depends on how much you want to explore. I'll be trying out the quarries soon- I guess it's a local place to cliff jump!
Bang for the buck Though our school is expensive, it is worth every penny. I am personally struggling with how to afford each year, but it is worth the stress. Though going to a state school would be cheaper, you will not get the same crowd of people or opportunities that this school offers.
What to do for fun Whatever you are in to! Rock climbing, swimming, skiing/running on the trails, clubs, intramurals, work, St. Joe, St. Cloud, activities every weekend! Everyone will find what they are in to.
Food and Dining There are so many options! There are full service dining rooms on each cmapus, three coffee shops, and three go-to-go fast food areas. All have healthy options as well.
Dorm Life Wonderful!! Although you are required to live on campus all 4 years now, it is not a bad situation. Lot's of space, fun residential life, and right in the middle of campus.
Academic Rigor Some courses are required for your major, and you will have to truly work for an A. Others, you can take for fun and really enjoy class :) You get the best of both worlds.
Tips for prospective students Get involved! It is the best way to meet new people, and see all CSB/SJU has to offer.
In three sentences The College of St. Benedict and Saint John's University is a truly amazing place. It is not just a school that allows a student to walk away with a degree, but a community that one will forever be a part of. There is a place academically, and socially for everyone.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Who want to learn about different cultures and become racial aware of other students around them. Who want to experience a college life without the stress of family. For those who learn better in a small classroom environment and love to participate.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus A tradition for the incoming College of Saint Benedict students is the candle light dinner. The students are welcomed with a candle being lite by a sister and get pinned as part of the Benedictine traditions. On the Saint John's campus is a lake with a long walking path that provides beautiful scenery of nature.
What to do for fun For fun, there is a whole range of different events. During the week students receive emails from different clubs to attend events. There are also concerts that are held here as well as performing artists. During the summer time students can play volleyball at Saint Ben's or swim at Saint John's. During the fall they can attend various events such as Ballroom dancing, watch a movie with friends, go out to dinner, etc. On the weekends there are buses that travel to Saint Cloud for those who want to shop at the mall. Students can also rent rackets and play volleyball, badminton, or tennis indoors.
Food and Dining There is a variety of foods from Asian to homemade. There are also accommodations for gluten-free and lactose-intolerance students. There are four different areas where students may buy their food or eat for lunch. On campus there are two places where students are able to quickly grab a sandwich to go and where they can buy ready to eat products.
Dorm Life For a first year student, there are three freshmen dorms. It is a fun and exciting new feeling when friends live across the hall or upstairs. Living in a dorm presents new challenges to become independent. The RA's are phenomenal and provide different activities for the girls on their floor to become familiar with each other. Laundry is not hard to fit in since there is a schedule for the week for all hours of the day. There are two bathrooms so there is no hassle to wait for other girls. Overall it is a plus to have a sink in the room so there is no need to run to the bathroom for a morning brush.
Academic Rigor The academic rigor at Saint Ben's and Saint John's keeps a student working and reading. The staff always tell students to test a variety of studying habits to ensure your best way of understanding materials. The class material is understandable if a student is trained to be able to annotate and comprehend the overall concept of an idea. By cramming in materials the student will surely not be able to pass a test or connect different ideas. Therefore there is some academic rigor and expectation that students are learning not regurgitating.
Tips for prospective students Attend an overnight at Saint Ben's or Saint John's and figure out if the distance is a problem. Some students may not want to be far away from home or want to be farther away. Be sure to attend a performance of and experience the different activities held at the colleges. Look at your financial aid packet and be able to interpret it correctly and see if it is cost effective. Do not hesitate to attend a college simply because of the cost because it is worth the effort. Lastly, attend a couple of classes in your intended major and figure out if it is really what you want.
In three sentences College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University is unique that it allows students to attend two colleges. It provides a safe environment for all students and welcomes everyone. The two colleges have exceptional teachers and staff who are supportive and attentive.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Every weekend, the campus puts on a wide variety of events. Some weekends they will have a magician or comedian and there are a lot of dances on the weekends. There is always something going on!
Food and Dining As a first-year students, you get an unlimited meal plan that means you have all the accesss you desire to the two main dining centers at St. Ben's and St. John's. The food is well prepared and there are always a lot of different options, so it never gets old!
Dorm Life The dorms at St. Ben's are very nice! The first-year dorms are spacious and every room has its own sink. The living situations get even better as you become an upperclassmen. The newest town homes, Centennial Commons, are so beautiful!
Academic Rigor The academic rigor depends on the classes that you are taking. Personally, I believe that my classes are very difficult, but also manageable. I do have to work hard. All of the classes are very small, usually less than 20 students, and they're all taught by the professors. It has been very nice to be in smaller classes because you get more one-on-one with the professors and are able to ask more questions!
Tips for prospective students Make sure that you come up and visit the two campuses! I'd even recommend staying with a current student, that way you get to experience the awesome atmosphere around campus.
In three sentences Embedded in their benedictine values, The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University creates an atmosphere I call home. Two different campuses that are both beautiful, yet unique. Students here are dedicated to their studies, but also know how to have a good time.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The security on campus is very good. They seems to be everywhere, which can be good or bad depending on how you look at it. I have never felt unsafe on campus however, which is a great feeling.
Greek Life There is limited sorority/fraternity life. There is an service fraternity on campus that is open to both men and women.
Clubs and Activities CSBSJU has a very wide variety of offerings for clubs/activities. They range from religious organizations, athletic clubs, academic clubs, etc.
Great for these types of students This campus is really conducive to anyone. I know many people from small towns to big cities, from MN to out of state, and even other countries! It is probably most suitable for those who can handle being a little ways away from the city and who like peace and quiet. Also, those who don't mind recognizing and/or being recognized by every fourth person you come across :)
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus CSBSJU is very unique in that the campuses are separated, about 7 miles apart, and there is a busing system that goes between the campuses to bring students to classes and activities. (Students take classes on both campuses).
Bang for the buck I definitely think that coming to CSBSJU was the best decision despite the cost. Initially looking at the costs, it seems almost ridiculous to pay, but CSBSJU makes every penny worth it. :)
What to do for fun There is so much to do at CSBSJU. Almost every weekend there is a concert, game night, play, dance, etc. for students to attend. They are great ways to meet new friends and bond with current ones!
Food and Dining Gorecki Dining Center (at CSB) is an excellent cafeteria/dining place on campus. The selections of the food and the preparation are great, the food is wonderful. The Refectory (at SJU) is also very good with wide varieties of food and great tasting meals! There are also a couple of fast-food/quicker options on campus that are also very tasty and are nice for on the go times.
Dorm Life The dorms and apartments on campus are very nice. They are spacious and provide good opportunities for getting to know your neighbors and hall mates.
Academic Rigor The academics here at CSBSJU are very rigorous and challenging, but also very interesting and exciting. I enjoy going to my classes each day knowing that I am going to be challenged and be learning something great.
Tips for prospective students Look at EVERYTHING about a college/university before you make you final decision to go there. Make sure to ask about dorm life, extracirriculars/clubs, class size, cost, location, how many students, etc.
In three sentences CSBSJU is one of the best decisions I have made in my life so far. The community feeling of the campuses is very welcoming, it truly is a home away from home. The student/professor relationships built here are unlike any other, they really want you to succeed and do well.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The area is a very safe place to live in and the campus security officers are great. They provide escorts to and from parking lots to students as well as unlocking doors if students forget their keys or need a jump start for their car. Students learn about how to safely engage in college experiences and where to go for help if they need it. I feel very safe here.
Greek Life There is a service-centered sorority on campus that is available to interested students who would like to help out around the community and meet a lot of wonderful people!
Clubs and Activities Students learn all about the clubs and activities offered around campus not only by emails but each year an Involvement Fair is held in the field hall that all of the clubs attend and set up booths to inform students about what they do and they give out lots of free prizes! There is also large, inflatable, bounces at this event!
Great for these types of students Students that are looking for a college that will feel like a close-knit community will love it here as well as students that want to be challenged and motivated throughout their college experience!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Johnny-Tommie football game is always an exciting time here at CSB/SJU! St. Thomas is our rival school and people get pretty into this game, (we were even featured on Fox News this year!) Orientation is a really great time and people put a lot of effort into making sure that your first few days here are filled with fun and informative events.
Bang for the buck Although it is an expensive school, don't write it off as an option before filling out your FAFSA and seeing what kind of scholarships and grants you may get from the school because they really do offer quite a bit of financial aid to students and the education you will receive along with the experiences is well worth it!
What to do for fun There are endless opportunities for fun here! Any club you could imagine has amazing programs where you will meet tons of cool people! You can also go swimming at either the CSB pool or the one at SJU where you are guaranteed to see at least one Johnny in a speedo! I think the best thing about it here is that there are two fully-equipped campuses that are available to students that attend either St. Johns or St. Ben's which gives you so many great options for spending your leisure time! The Arboretum at St. John's is a beautiful place to go for walks, take pictures with friends, or just see nature stuff! The beach at St. John's is really fun in the warmer months of school because they have canoes, paddle boards, a raft, a dock, and so much more for you to enjoy with friends. If any of that doesn't interest you, attend an aerobics class like step or zumba, go into one of the music practice rooms and play around, have fun with friends in the dance studio making up routines or just being silly, etc. You will absolutely never be bored here!
Food and Dining If they didn't have such a great work-out facility, I would have gained a hundred pounds by now from all of the great food that is offered here!
Dorm Life Five stars big time! The resident directors and resident assistants here are amazing and can't be beat! There are events going on at almost every minute of the day for every kind of person! My RA's are my great friends and they are always a wonderful source to go to for help!
Academic Rigor I would say that this is one of the most challenging schools you can choose to attend, but they offer endless resources to ensure your success! You just have to be driven enough to work for it.
Tips for prospective students First tip, eat at Gorecki dining center on your tour! Specifically, try the Mongolian Grill-- it is amazing! Definitely do an overnight stay if it is possible for you, your roommate for the night will make you feel very at home and you will have an amazing time! Visit the field hall and the Main building if you can as they are both very cool places to see on a tour! Try to see the rock climbing wall at Saint John's campus. I spend a lot of time there! It is a good idea to meet with a professor in the field you intend to go into. This gives you an opportunity to get a feel for how the professors here interact with the students. They are always very helpful and personal. The professors here at extremely dedicated to their students' success.
In three sentences You will never find more people smiling than at the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University. You will not feel as comfortable and cared for anywhere else as you will at CSB/SJU. You will receive the absolute best education possible if you attend this college!

Categories Comments Campus Safety Extremely safe, rarely do I hear of people getting things stolen from them, and I have yet to hear of fight. We have security officers on campus that help if needed, but they are not needed too often.
Clubs and Activities So many clubs to choose from and each club is extremely welcoming of new members. These clubs make student life fun and exciting.
Great for these types of students Students who can ask questions. Professors will help outside of class as long as the student approaches them and starts the conversation.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus On the SJU campus there is a chapel across the lake. This chapel is beautiful and makes for a very fun walking, especially when walking with someone you care greatly about, and it helps if they are of the opposite gender too.
Bang for the buck It may seem like an expensive school but after scholarships and FAFSA funding it is not much more expensive than 4 year state schools. The life here is amazing and the education is fantastic.
What to do for fun What isn't there to do for fun, is a better question. Every weekend different clubs around the school put on different and fun events. Things from dances, poker night, dinners, and sporting events. During the week clubs and sports have practice or competitions.
Food and Dining The food is good but it can get a little repetitive. There are lots of Mexican foods like tacos.
Dorm Life The rooms are very spacious for dorm rooms. Plus there are sinks in all of the rooms. This is a huge advantage for things like shaving and brushing teeth.
Academic Rigor Classes are very difficult, however, the teachers are willing to help. If the teacher is not available there are tutors hired and assigned for each class and level of learning.
Tips for prospective students Take tours at all colleges that are being considered and try to do overnight visits. The overnight visits are when you will learn the most about the college and the student life.
In three sentences The school has a wonderful staff that is always willing and able to help all students no matter the issue. The student atmosphere is unbelievable because the students are amazing. The Johnies will always open a door for a Bennie and everyone is nice and a friend to everyone else.

Food and Dining There are so many great options for eating on campus included in the meal plan!
Dorm Life Freshmen dorms are very large and clean, very new with a great lobby.
Academic Rigor Classes are engaging but not too difficult or overwhelming for the most part.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you tour campus, being on campus just once is what gets most people hooked.

Categories Comments Campus Safety For the most part although St. Ben's is part of a small town, there isn't much outsider traffic. The schools are pretty safe with your occasional misbehaving.
Greek Life We only have one and it is community-service driven. I don't know of any for the guys.
Clubs and Activities There are lots of clubs for you to join but if none appeal to you, you can always make your own.
Great for these types of students Those who are looking for a community-driven college. Those who really love nature and are not big-city people.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is the Chapel Walk. Legend says that if one does the Chapel walk with your loved one (some say hand in hand) that you will marry that person. There is some high rate of that being true like 80 something percent.
Bang for the buck Recently, the colleges have been getting more expensive but I think if you take advantage of everything the college offers then it is worth it. For example, laundry is free, renting movies is free, gym is free, sporting equipment--free to rent, etc.
What to do for fun There are usually a variety of events on both campuses. If there is nothing that you are interested in you can also rent movies from both libraries. Also, going out to town, St. Joe, can be fun as well. There are hiking trails and during the nice days people go to the beach (Lake Sagatan). You can rent a lot of different sporting equipment from both campus recreation centers.
Food and Dining The food is pretty good. I prefer Gorecki over the Reef but with that being said after a while you get tired of both food places. In your third year (or second year if you're lucky) you'll have an apartment so you can cook your own food. There are also other places such as Sexton and McGlynns which offer subs and food from the Grill. Also in town there are yummy restaurants such as BoDiddley's and Kays Kitchen.
Dorm Life Life in the dorms is what you make it. I think that my first year was really fun because the college really focuses on making the first year dorms really fun. There are many activities such as decorating for Halloween and Christmas. There are also a lot of themed dances. Some are specifically for the year like First year SnoBall formal. Honestly just be open to going to different events.
Academic Rigor It depends on what your major is for the most part. But I think all classes are challenging but with great professors who are willing to help. All classes are pretty small the biggest class I've been in is of 40 students and the smallest of 12.
Tips for prospective students Have fun and really take advantage of all the resources that the school offers. When in doubt talk to your FYS professor they can inform you of places to go for help and anything else that you have questions about.
In three sentences Community. Fun. Friendships.

Categories Comments Food and Dining The food at St. Bens was hands down the best of any school. There are many options of food to eat and the dining room is incredible too. Aside from the food building, there are also little cafes around the campus too to pick up snacks and a little drink.
Dorm Life During my visit last Spring, I was able to see inside one of the dorms. They were a lot bigger than a lot of the schools I visited. Many of the rooms also have a sink.
Academic Rigor Many of the people I have talked to have loved St. Bens. Usually when I mention any other school, people either say they love it or hate it. Never have I heard someone say they hated St. Bens. It is also a very prestigious school in MN and even recognized nationally for its students.
In three sentences The campus is gorgeous with everything from the nature around it to its church. The dorms are bigger than most of the ones I've seen on my visits and the food is phenomenal! All of the classrooms and equipment looked clean and up to date.

Categories Comments Campus Safety It is a very safe campus. Security is always willing to give rides around campus late at night, not that one ever feels the need to call. Everyone is very trustwrothy.
Greek Life There are very few frats or sororities, and the ones we do have are volunteer based.
Clubs and Activities There are giant lists long of activities and clubs that would take to long to mention here, but there is something for everyone.
Great for these types of students Those who like a sense of home or family, who love nature or the arts, and like to eat.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We are called the Bennies for the female students and Johnnies for the male students. And being polite is a big one. Everyone holds the door open for one another, and everyone waits seated on the bus till their seat. It sounds a little goofy, but it's just basic kindness.
Bang for the buck Dorm life is beautiful, and the food is great!
What to do for fun There is so much to do! Hiking, canoeing, swimming, skating, anything outdoors is a must. Otherwise there are great art programs to go visit, and many intramural leagues to join.
Food and Dining The two main dining areas are called The Reef and Gorecki. (Grr - eck - ski) Both have a ton of options, but I'd definitly say the food at St. Ben's is better, with the Mongo Grill.
Dorm Life Our Residential Advisors are amazing and plan many activities. Everyone's door is always open and it's like a giant family. Plus the rooms are huge!
Academic Rigor It always depends on the subjects and professors, but for anything with science be prepared for a challenge.
Tips for prospective students Don't be afraid to talk to strangers, it's a friendly place. And be sure to get involved in as many activities as possible.

Food and Dining The food is fantastic where ever you go. It is very easy to eat too much.
Dorm Life It is great living in a community. You make many friends, and some you will have and keep even after you graduate!
Academic Rigor Depending on what classes or what your major is, there can be some hard classes. They really get you thinking and the professors give you tools to go out and use for what you are learning about and use to your full potiential.
Tips for prospective students Check it out to see if it is your fit. Take a weekend visit or something to give you a chance to see if you fit into what this school has to offer.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I gave them a one because the campus safety are often intrusive and overreaching.
Greek Life non-existent
Clubs and Activities The clubs and activities is about in the middle, but its been getting better recently
Great for these types of students 1. Non-partiers 2. Religious Catholics
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus 1. The dropping of pants during last call at the bar 2. The lima bean song on the bus
Bang for the buck Met (mostly) good people...but the lack of experiences outside the classroom make this school unbearable sometime
What to do for fun Play sports...all there is...
Food and Dining There are nearly no options for food outside of the 2 main dining halls, with the exception of being able to order pizza from one place in town.
Dorm Life The school changed the rules on housing this year, and people are no longer allowed to live off campus. This is resulting in a huge number of upperclassmen getting stuck in crappy underclassmen housing.
Academic Rigor Some of the classes are tough, but nothing is unbearable if you're willing to put the time into it.
Tips for prospective students 1. Make as many friends as possible, they will come in helpful in many ways 2. Finish all your FAE's and general requirements early on, as you don't want them hanging around later 3. If you have a problem, talk to profs, as the classes are small and profs are pretty helpful. 4. Having a car is a huge asset here.
In three sentences This school has a very Benedictine feel to it and lays a heavy focus on community and valued. In addition to that, its pretty big on empowering women. The biggest knocks (which I think are HUGE) are the fact that this school is very very isolated and the nightlife scene is nearly non-existent, especially seeing as how the school is getting even more intrusive.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I feel extremely safe walking around this campus at night. Everyone is just so nice and there are places to call for life safety or campus security if you really feel that need.
Clubs and Activities Like I previously said, there are numerous clubs on campus. During the beginning of the year there is an event (the name escapes me) and all the clubs set up a booth in the field house and students walk around and get free stuff and sign up for clubs. It's a great way to know all the available clubs on campus.
What to do for fun There are always events that are being held on weekends or even during the week. There's definitely things to do if you're not a partier. If you like parties those are there too. Not really intense ones, people here think they go hard but head on over to Cloud if you want a real party. There are workout classes, volleyball nets, and many outdoor items that can be rented. There are also about a billion clubs so there's totally something for everyone.
Food and Dining The food is really good and since there are two campuses you have double the options. Some people get bored of the same things but you can mix things from different food lines and you'll be fine.
Dorm Life The dorms are fairly nice, all dorms have a sink which is extremely convenient. You can't live off campus though which kind of sucks but most of the junior and senior housing options on campus are apartments or townhome-like anyways. I just wish we could live off campus, sometimes it feels like the administration doesn't treat us like adults.
Academic Rigor Classes are not easy but if you get accepted into the college you are smart and you can handle it. I think most people that go here were one of the top students at their high schools so they are used to not needing to study but you definitely do need to study for tests.
Tips for prospective students Visit the college! You will see what I'm saying about the sense of community. Many people wear CSB SJU apparel and you will see people holding doors and thanking each other.
In three sentences CSB SJU has a very friendly environment, and good sense of community. There are more things to do on the weekends than just partying. Overall everyone is polite and welcoming.

Categories Comments Clubs and Activities A decent array of clubs and activities. It's also easy to start your own!
Great for these types of students Students who want the full liberal arts education--complete with growth in critical thinking, communication, and analytical writing--need to come here.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The most popular tradition is the chapel walk. There's a small, quaint chapel on the other side of Lag Sag on SJU campus. Legend has it that if a Bennie and a Johnnie walk to the chapel together (1.5 miles roughly on a dirt path through the woods) they will be destined to get married. There is also no shortage of ghost stories--CSB/SJU are definitely haunted.
Bang for the buck The colleges are very expensive but the food, dorms, and education make it worth it for those who can afford it. Scholarships are in abundance as well!
What to do for fun SJU has a 1,200 acre arboreteum to run, walk, or bike through. The campuses have wide spaces to play and to hang out with people.
Food and Dining The food can't be beat.
Dorm Life The dorms are among the most spacious and beautiful that I've seen at most colleges/universities. Saint Ben's just built new housing for upperclasswomen!
Academic Rigor Classes are challenging and you learn a lot.
Tips for prospective students Make sure to take advantage of the campus tours and the overnight stays with current students.
In three sentences CSB/SJU is the perfect place if you want an intimate and rigorous liberal arts education. The campuses are beautiful, the resources are abundant, and the people are incredible. They're well-known for their nationally ranked study abroad programs and their excellent alumni-networking system.
