    Campus Safety

Earlham is a very small campus, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's completely safe. If you ever feel unsafe, call Campus Safety & Security (who you'll probably know by name) and they will come pick you up.

    Greek Life

    Nope.

    Clubs and Activities

Plenty of options, including (but not limited to) Bonner Scholars, Black Men United and Black Women United, AASV and Men's Forum (sexual violence prevention and education groups), the Brimley's (a capella group), women's choir, concert choir, orchestra, theatre, Co-Op Hall (intentional living community) and Division III sports.

Great for these types of students

Potheads, idiot savants, Bio majors, Japanese studies majors (great departments for each of these subjects), kids who are smart but unmotivated students, glasses-wearing bike-riding hipsters, chain-smokers, feminists, white people, horse people, people who are interested in knowing what it's like to live on a farm.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The biggest tradition is the Hash, which is held every Saturday afternoon. The GM's, usually upperclassmen, plant a trail of flour for Hashers to follow, which leads around campus and into Richmond. Eventually the flour will lead back campus, where warm beer is waiting to be chugged. The Hash itself involves a plethora of traditional songs, and an elaborate naming ceremony for frequent Hashers. The second biggest tradition at Earlham is Little Two/Whiskey Tue. Every Tuesday at 11 pm, Little 2 GM's convene in front of Earlham Hall and hold a (drunken) bicycle race among students. Students cheer on their friends and pray they don't fall off the bikes. Afterwards a campus house holds a party for Whiskey Tue(sday). One last unusual feature of campus is a series of steam tunnels that exist underground. Adventurous students explore these steam tunnels, but because I wasn't one of them, that's about all I can tell you.

    Bang for the buck

Earlham gives out tons of scholarship money. The education you'll get is great, but unfortunately resources are often outdated and crappy (aside from the brand-new Wellness Center) and opportunities are scant.

    What to do for fun

Partying, socializing and taking part in Earlham drinking traditions (Little 2, the Hash) are the primary choices of most students. A sub-set of students lovingly referred to as Bundy kids make their own fun with improv nights and attending SAB events. Concerts from the Brimley's (Earlham's acapella group) and alumni, local or small-time bands are popular also.

    Food and Dining

On-campus food is mediocre. Off-campus options are limited, aside from La Mex, an authentic Mexican joint, 5th Street Bagel, a popular Sunday morning hangout among students, and Gyslaine's, where you will only go if your parents are in town to pay for it.

    Dorm Life

The plus side to dorms is that they are cleaned by staff EVERY day (as opposed to campus housing, which I think is cleaned once every 2 weeks). Dorms make it easy to make new friends and the community is great.

    Academic Rigor

Your education at Earlham is what you make it. If you want to push yourself to be intellectually stimulated, you will have lots of support. If, however, you want to spend your four years partying and goofing off, getting by on your good looks, charm and money, you will definitely still graduate.

    Tips for prospective students

-Don't stick to just one group of friends. Earlham can be very cliquey but if you make friends from different groups in the beginning of freshman year, you can easily stay in touch with all of them. -Get to know your professors. They are helpful and will write your future recommendations. -Take classes outside your major. You will learn a lot. -Study abroad if you can afford it. 60% of Earlham students study abroad and Earlham has great programs. -Practice self-care. Mental health is a huge issue on campus. See on-campus counselors if you're having trouble maintaining a balance between studying/partying.

    In three sentences

Earlham College is a small liberal arts school in the midwestern town of Richmond, Indiana. Earlham boasts great professors, small class sizes, and an emphasis (among both professors and students) on social justice. Earlham is infamous for its student body, which is chock-full of hippies, international students (particularly from Japan and the middle east), small-town athletes, and hipsters from all over the U.S.

    Tips for prospective students

Be sure to do research on what degree you plan on receiving, and if you are a transfer student, be sure to check with the registrar about what credits will actually be accepted.

    In three sentences

Focused on social justice, both in history and in present application, Earlham is an excellent beginning for the social entrepreneur. This stems from deep Quaker values, which help to stimulate the embracing of wider values across all cultures. Many different opportunities exist for the Earlham graduate, both due to the valued education one receives but also because of the wide support of past alumni.

    Bang for the buck

Earlham is really expensive but it's totally worth it. They offer a lot of financial aid, most of my friends here essentially came because it offered the best financial aid package. The things the school does for us and the academics prove why the school costs so much. You get what you pay for here, and that's an amazing education and community life.

    Food and Dining

Definitely not the best all around. The menu's are posted weekly and we have the option of meal exchange to eat a tastier (albeit less healthy) option. Most students don't like the food but there are a decent amount of options.

    Dorm Life

Depending on where you live, you will either see/talk to your dorm mates all the time, or barely ever. In general dorm life is a real positive at Earlham. There is a big focus on community and sharing spaces.

    Academic Rigor

Definitely a school that values academics. Because the school puts a high priority on them, you will need to prioritize your academics as well. The classes are challenging, but not too rough and all the teachers really have your best interests at heart and are always willing to help.

    Campus Safety

Completely safe and well looked after. The campus security drive rounds throughout the day and can be reached by phone in case of emergency.

    Greek Life

We do not have sororities or fraternities, just group houses for people of like minds ie knit house, Spanish house, Japan House, etc.

    Bang for the buck

Earlham is EXTREMELY expensive and scholarships are the only reason that I, personally, was able to come here. It is an amazing and wonderful school but i hesitate to say that it's worth the same amount as Harvard.

    Food and Dining

The dining hall, fondly known as SAGA to Earlhamites, always has many choices for food, including a large selection of vegetarian options. There is always pizza and salad options, and the main line usually has very popular options available.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are wonderful and well-maintained. People as a whole are pretty respectful of their neighbors and are quick to change something if it is bothering you. Often during the course of a month there will be events and study groups where food is offered or where you can make food and hang out with your floormates or simply just have fun. Earlham has a wonderful community and the dorms express that in a much smaller and more intimate way.

    Academic Rigor

This college is very rigorous and many classes assign large amounts of homework. If you haven't already, learn good time management and do your homework, or try to, the day/night it is assigned. This will make your time at Earlham a lot more enjoyable and much less stressful.

    Tips for prospective students

Prepare to study and work hard here but also expect to have fun and create friendships that last. The community here is quite amazing and it's truly a blessing to be apart of it. Also, you may want to make sure you have funds to stock up on groceries and snack foods for those late-night study parties, although Dominos is always an option.

    In three sentences

Amazing and wonderful school with a great pride in community and friendship. Very academically rigorous and quite rewarding. A large variety of classes and majors are available with very helpful professors to guide you throughout your time here
