Great for these types of students

Students looking for a gorgeous campus with friendly faces. The weather is beautiful, pirate pride is almost palpable in Greenville, and the large style campus makes you feel like you are apart of something bigger without feeling lost. Perfect for every student, looking for a bustling social scene or even a trip straight to academia.

    Tips for prospective students

Have an open mind, join as many on campus clubs and activities as you can. Becoming a pirate is a process! After you experience your first ECU football game you will officially bleed purple and gold. Being friendly in the dorms is a must-being social in college is almost just as important as that 4.0.

    Bang for the buck

Out of state tuition is gruesome in this economy! But there is truly no where I'd rather be than an ECU pirate!

If your going into the medical field choose ECU. Such as Biology, Chemistry, Forensics majors are very intense but well worth it!

    Tips for prospective students

If your a Biology major, GOOD LUCK! It is a hard major especially the A&P classes! However, ECU is growing into more and more medical fields and also has a number 1 Criminal Justice program. Also, beware on Halloween, because they close some streets down and it is like a major party that everyone goes out in the streets with their horrifying costumes and police are everywhere! One more thing: DO NOT BUY YOUR BOOKS ON CAMPUS!! They are a rip off. I recommend buying off ebay, Chegg.com, amazon or any other book stores online because you can get them so much cheaper and then sell them back to ECU.

    Bang for the buck

It is not as expensive as Chapel Hill or Wake Forest, but with all the transportation to anywhere on campus, and the free movies, it is so worth going to a four year college.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is soo beautiful, and the overall people are really down to earth.

    Am learning a lot

Even though the classes are much more intense than I thought, the professors here make sure you understand what your learning!

Great for these types of students

This school is great for students who are very interested in the medical fields, and its school of nursing. Those who are wishing to be Dentists in their career, there is a solid school of dentistry starting in the near future. Yes I am a Geography Major, which has a very succesful graduation rate for their majors, but East Carolina has a broad selection of degrees to ensure that you will be successful in your future career. East Carolina believes in Service, and that is what should be the total decisive factor in coming to an institution such as ECU.

    Tips for prospective students

My tips for prospective students are simple. First tip, come to school knowing you want to succeed and have a great education. You have to come here and study hard, and live a stress free lifestyle. Yes, school can be VERY stressful at times, but remember; only you are in control of your destiny and future endeavors. Second tip, go to your professors’ office for help. Most of my success here at East Carolina has solely been going to my professors’ office and asking them for help. In fact, the number one tip that I learned before I came to college was learning that professors enjoy seeing their students, and are very impressed that their student is actually taking the time to learn and come to their office to have a successful semester in their class. Third tip, HAVE FUN! Get out and enjoy the life of being a pirate through awesome advanced screening movies on campus, mingling with other pirates downtown on weekend nights, cheering and being loud for the back-to-back Conference USA pirates at one of the loudest football stadiums in North Carolina at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium, or enjoying a delicious midnight breakfast meal before exams begin!!

    Bang for the buck

East Carolina has a fairly reasonable price for students who wish to go to school here. Yes, we are in a horrible situation with the economy and the way that it is, but East Carolina has gone beyond to do what they should do to help me out in time of need with my family, and how they have a GREAT financial plan to ensure that you get a good education and make sure your time here in Pirate Nation is enjoyable and stress free!

    Am enjoying being here

I love waking up in my apartment everyday knowing that I am a pirate. I bleed purple and gold! I have LOVED ECU since stepping on campus in August of 2008, and have made and met unforgettable friendships that will definitely last a lifetime. The atmosphere is amazing, the town locals are VERY kind, and the attitude of success here at East Carolina is alive, as each and every student knows just what it means to study hard, and excel in the classroom!

    Am learning a lot

Since enrolling at East Carolina University, I have learned what it means to merge and accept other peoples opinions and different points of view on religion, politics, humanity, etc. I have also learned and educated myself so much, and have finally began to see my education and degree paying off through my job, and how I speak educated than how I did before I came to ECU.

Great for these types of students

Students who won't let themselves get distracted by the party scene and will be able to push themselves to always go to class.

    Tips for prospective students

Join as many clubs as you can as soon as you get here. Find things that interest you and if there isn't already a group about your interest on campus, start one yourself! Don't stay cooped up in your dorm room all day, there are plenty of friendly people all over campus and the easiest way to meet them is just to go out and find things you love to do! Just don't let the party scene here at ECU get in the way of your academics.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is high for students not from North Carolina but it could be worse.

    Am enjoying being here

Becoming a pirate is the best decision I've ever made!

    Am learning a lot

Not only are my classes and professors interesting, I am also learning a lot from living on my own in a dorm for the first time!

Great for these types of students

Great for education majors and nursing majors. I hear we have a high majority of those students. There is a good drama/theater program as well as a medical field. (Other than nursing)

    Tips for prospective students

I'd be prepared for rain! If you don't own a pair of rainboots, please invest in a pair before you begin your path here. Trust me. It will be so worth the 30-40 dollars. Also be prepared to get a high amount of pirate bucks. I have the lowest amount, and with how many dining options we have on campus, you're gonna wanna eat somewhere other than the dining hall a few times! Totally worth it having a Chilis on campus :)

    Bang for the buck

I don't like how ECU really is rising tuition. We just paid some of our tuition through a new beach complex at an apartment complex, that we can't even swim in! What's the point in having a beach that we can't even swim in? Isn't that half the point? We are putting too much money through stuff we don't need. We are laying off professors, yet our tuition is going up. Yeah sure, we like fun stuff to do on campus, but there are some things that are a little ridiculous for us to pay for.

    Am enjoying being here

I have amazing friends here and there are SO many activities to get invovled in here at ECU. If someone is a gamer, I'm sure you can find a group of people who love to game. For people like me who is a guard girl, we have an amazing colorguard, and we are planning on having a winter guard this year :)

    Am learning a lot

I am a current Special Education major here, and am really enjoying a lot of my classes. By using Rate my Professor I pick the professors I want, that way I don't choose anyone that doesn't sound like a good professor. That's one thing that makes it easy for me to like class, is having that opportunity to choose professors. I learn in my classes, and I enjoy going.

WOW! I love attending ECU! The enjoyment is truely overwhelming. The faculty and staff are simply amazing with the urge to teach beyond the limits.

    Tips for prospective students

The tips go beyond university borderlines... if you have a great personality with the yearning for learning, then you have what it takes to attend this university and be successful. The only advise I have is obvious, just dont procrastinate and it will be then that you learn what it takes to survive in a world such as our own.

Great for these types of students

Nursing students and education majors are at a great advantage here at East Carolina. East Carolina is notorious for nursing and is very well known to be a nursing school.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't party all the time. You are paying for the school, so don't waste your money. Also attend professors extra instruction. Extra instruction is usually a key word for going over the exam from last year, which usually doesn't change too much from year to year.

    Bang for the buck

Of course college is expensive, and espicially in these hard economic times, however, East Carolina is one of the cheaper schools in the eastern Carolina area.

    Am enjoying being here

ECU is a wonderful environment. Purple and Gold pride is everywhere. The town is proud of their pirates and the pirates are proud of their town.

    Am learning a lot

East Carolina is a good school espicially if you enjot learning. Many classes are offered and are very interesting. You must study if you want to do well. Grades here are not handed out ( like most schools.) Teachers do expect a lot from you, however, if you do your work, you'll be good.

Great for these types of students

It would be best to call the school for more information and even go as far as to ask them to send you those information for future references.

    Tips for prospective students

Take time to visit the campus. I have yet to visit ECU but have heard great things.

    Bang for the buck

ECU costs less than the private school I currently attend, but this is because it is a public school. However, it has many scholarship programs for students that range from high school to transfer students. If you want to be eligible for these award it is best to not only have a great GPA but also, community service and leadership experience.

    Will enjoy being here

I rated this very because I have no idea on how student life is at ECU, so don't take my rating as the ultimate answer to this question.

    Will learn a lot

I am interested in health sciences and have heard great reviews about that department of ECU. It would be best to do more in depth research for your particular major or career interest.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for students with open minds, and students that have a general interest in education, nursing, business, music, theater, and medicine. That is just a short few, but the list goes on. Find what you are looking for and I am pretty sure ECU has it to offer!

    Tips for prospective students

Remember that your high school study habits don't work here or anywhere for that matter. Also it is okay to have a little fun but just keep in mind what you are going to school for and keep the dream in sight. There will always be a party, but you don't always have to be there for your name to be known. STUDY FIRST PARTY LATER!!!

    Bang for the buck

I definitely get the bang for my buck. There are many organizations on campus to join and there are always programs for a person to go to. You can even start your own organization if you can't find what you are looking for.

    Am enjoying being here

I LOVE being at ECU. There are many things to do at this school and the people there make the experience even better. The teachers are even cool to talk to.

    Am learning a lot

There are a lot of things to learn on this campus. Knowing that there are many different people and cultures, learning new things daily is what there is to look forward to.

    Tips for prospective students

Realize that you are spending lots of money to come to this (or any other) University. So take your classes seriously! Go to class on time and complete your assignments, you will find your classes will be less difficult if you pay attention and do your work. Time management is a necessary skill; you need to know how to balance work and play, and if you can do it right your college experience will be much less stressful. Some advice for prospective art students; all art majors must go through foundations classes. These classes are like the boot camp of art school. Be warned that art is NOT an easy major, you will be spending lots of time working on art projects and all of your classes will be two to three hours long. However, if art is truly what you love doing and you take it seriously then you will do well. Be sure to manage your time wisely and be aware of approaching deadlines. As an art student you will have unlimited access to the Jenkins Fine Art Center at all hours, you will spend a lot of time here, and be sure to use it. Good Luck!

    Bang for the buck

Tuition for out of state is pricey, but for in state students the pricing is fair and on par with other major Universities. I definitely recommend this college for anyone considering being an art student. It is a fantastic school for the arts, but without the extra expenses for attending a private art school. You will spend a lot of money on art supplies, so be prepared for that. However, East Carolina isn't just great for art students, it is also a great school for anyone considering degrees in the medical field, communications field, or the education field. If you are an in state resident I definitely recommend looking into East Carolina, it is affordable, and offers a variety of great programs.

    Am enjoying being here

Everyone at East Carolina is a proud, purple and gold wearing pirate. East Carolina offers a lot of fun student activities, that are most often free for students. You could go bowling, see movies, go swimming, get your work out, see concerts, and so much more, all on campus! I live in the dorms and am very pleased with the conditions and layout of my hall. Campus Dining has lots of places to eat, including two dining halls, and plenty of coffee shops. Classes are easy to get to and the campus is easy to navigate. Being an East Carolina pirate is just awesome!

    Am learning a lot

I am a current Art student here at East Carolina University, and the Fine Art College here is absolutely fantastic! The professors are helpful and always willing to help if you have questions, and it's not just the Art College that is like that either. Every professor I have ever had has always offered ways for students to improve and always want students to come to them if they are having difficulties. My knowledge and skill in art has grown over my time here, and I couldn't love it more!

Great for these types of students

This school is very open to outgoing students. But the diversity here creates an amazing for everyone. Also, ECU is growing into a university that has a great variety of studies. From art to engineering, ECU has most of it all.

    Tips for prospective students

DO NOT become reclusive at this college. There is plenty to do. But just like almost every other college, you will be much closer to the with ECU if you live on campus, if possible. Join organizations and attend events. You will positively not regret it.

    Bang for the buck

For in state (and living off campus), the tuition was actually pretty cheap. Of course, room and board add more. But compared to many other colleges in North Carolina, ECU is fairly cheap.

    Did enjoy being here

The atmosphere is amazing here. I believe the school spirit at ECU is one of the tops in the state. EVERYBODY is a Pirate at East Carolina. And there's always something to do and fun to enjoy.

    Did learn a lot

I attended as an Engineering student. The classes actually taught me a lot and gave me many real world scenarios. I gave 4 out of 5 stars because for a few of the classes, unfortunately (or fortunately), it is possible to get away with not doing much work and getting a decent grade.

    Bang for the buck

Out of state tuition is crazy don't get me wrong but it is definately worth every penny. i feel welcomed here and the professors are very helpful for whatever i may need. I highly recommend any in-state or out-of-state high school senior to apply to ECU.

    Am enjoying being here

Being a pirate is definitely the best thing to be. The football games are intense and we get to play top rated schools. Students are self-less and always willing to help a classmate out when in need.

    Am learning a lot

Professors here are very helpful when it comes to a students education. If you need any type of tutoring they will help you find a tutor group and will give you their office hours for you to come whenever you please.

Great for these types of students

Most any student. Most people think this is a party school, but like any college those you look for a party find a party. If you want a fun time in school, where you learn a lot, get one on one time with your professors, small classes, and most importantly a fun environment, then this is the school for you.

    Tips for prospective students

Figure out how much you eat, study, and look into time management. In high school its harder to get distracted than in college. So many activities, friends, and classes, its hard to remember what all needs to get done. On the plus side it gets easier, on the down side, its rather difficult to focus all the time. You need a firm hand on time management.

    Bang for the buck

I have a meal plan which can kind of be a pain in the butt, but it is also extremely helpful. Your meals run out at the end of the week, and restart and Monday. So if you have the Pirate 19 Plus, you get 19 meals per week, and on Sunday at Midnight (technically Monday) you get 19 again. The only problem with that, is if you don't use all 19 meals, then you are out of luck. However, its nearly impossible to run out of meals here! You learn as much as you want! So.... On the subject of tution, I think it is worth it!!!

    Am enjoying being here

ABSOLUTELY, the students here all have wonderful school spirits, the teachers are friendly and considerate, and best of all its a beautiful campus.

    Am learning a lot

The professors are truly here to help you learn and are almost always available for help. My department is very small, and I live on campus, so I see my professors all over the place. (Which in high school wasn't a great thing, but here it is completely different.) If I have a question, anytime I see them I am able to ask. I can also ask professors who I know teaches the class to explain it differently.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for students who love to party, but are able to moderate. If you are easily convinced to procrastinate I suggest going to WCU the sister school where there isn't anything in the town to distract you. :P

    Tips for prospective students

My main advice is make sure you're going to class and stay on task with school work. It is definitely easy to fall behind with the clubs just a bus ride away.

    Bang for the buck

I believe ECU as far as academics go is definitely worth the money, if you live on campus the meal plans are a little ridiculous for what you're getting.

    Am enjoying being here

I definitely like the school, but the people here can be a little stuck up at times. I will be at a bus stop and try to casually make conversation, but most people will not carry on a conversation with you and you're left there looking stupid.

    Am learning a lot

High school teachers try to say that your college professors will not care about your grades, but at ECU if you're putting in your best effort and your professor sees that they are all willing to help.

    What to do for fun

for fun my friends like to go out to frat parties or go downtown to the clubs.

    Food and Dining

the places to eat on campus are all very good with the exception of the dining halls. both dining halls do have their lucky nights where the food isn't that bad but that is a rare occasion.

    Dorm Life

the dorms here are all decently nice. although i am excited to move into an apartment next year, i feel that dorm life is an experience that everyone should have. the ras here are very laid back and are only on your case if you are disruptive.

    Academic Rigor

the academics here at ecu are more challenging that people give credit. it is not a school that anyone can pass and they do a really good job at challenging the students.

    Tips for prospective students

study hard, don't take more hours than you think you can handle, be careful, balance social and school, go to class

    In three sentences

east carolina university is a great university with great professors as well. everyone here is committed to receiving and giving the best education possible. everyone here at ecu is more than proud to be a pirate!!

Keep your head up and in the books. The rest will become natural...Enjoy it all while doing it or you will regret it.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't come looking for a babysitter or your mom... You are on your own. It is up to you to do everything on your own... You do have people that is here to guide you. But college will be your starting point for growing up. If you have never had to do things on your own or make decisions on your own, then prepare yourself. But it is not hard if you have your head on straightt.

    Bang for the buck

So many things to see, to do, to go and realize that I have plenty of time to do it all in over the next four years. This is a place worth your money.

    Am enjoying being here

College life is Great. I have made so many new friends. The people you meet treat you as if you have been their friend forever. I have been here for 4 months and still feel like I haven't seen everything or been everywhere. And everything is within your reach. Shopping on one side, food on another, the happenings on another and the hospital right here if you need it. Hopefully you won't but everything is right here near school.

    Am learning a lot

The teachers here are doing what they suspose to do, teach. It's up to you to do the rest. Wake up, it's not elementary school no more. You have to work for this, they will not hold your hand. You have so many things to help you here, you just have to be willing to find them and use them.

ECU is famous for it's diversity. If you like meeting new people from many countries and all walks of life East Carolina is the school for you. If one is looking to progress academically from High School, ECU is great.

    Tips for prospective students

With so many things to do on campus, focusing on academics is tricky for some. Having priorities is the most important tip. While the movies on the weekend are great, it should not interfere with studying. Professors and faculty are willing to help you... are you willing to be helped? Another thing is to not procrastinate, which is a problem across all campuses. Don't ever leave things for the last minute!

    Bang for the buck

Of all the North Carolina colleges and universities, ECU is the least expensive. With that being said, the quality of education is excellent. Professors are accessible, tutoring is free, the campus is absolutely beautiful, financial aid is great, and the opportunities to get involved in any organization are limitless. For my money, I am getting what I wished for and then some!

    Am enjoying being here

ECU offers many opportunities to be involved and have fun. There are hundreds of clubs to chose from, and starting a club is also very easy. There are many free events that happen weekly on campus such as movies, concerts, and fairs. Departments also host their own events open to the public. ECU has free movie rentals, a bowling alley as well as the gym for people to take advantage from. The town of Greenville has a mall and many other shopping centers that a college student will enjoy.

    Am learning a lot

At ECU, there is no excuse not to learn. There are so many wonderful courses to take, and qualified professors to chose from. So far in my college career at ECU, I am not only being taught classes that pertain to my major, but courses that help me become well rounded. If you are open to learning, you will achieve a greater depth in any course you take than you ever expected.

Great for these types of students

ECU is great for EVERYONE! The university loves to know what the students think, so every other week, they send us a survey asking us what they could do to make the university better, or what they could add to accommodate us. Just recently, they've added a Chillis Restaurant, Starbucks, and a Burger Studio.

    Tips for prospective students

Come to East Carolina with an open mind, relax, and have fun. College will not be as easy as high school, but, if you manage your time well, get involved on campus and in the community, and keep your GPA up, you'll have a blast!

    Bang for the buck

East Carolina is what I would call, Easy on the Pockets, and Great on the Transcript I feel that I am getting the most out of my tuition from the staff and from the organizations that are on campus.

    Am enjoying being here

There is never a dull moment at ECU.

    Am learning a lot

The professors are very friendly, and they will take time out of their busy schedule to meet with you if you are having trouble in their class. The university also offers the Pirate Tutoring Center, which offers one-on-one tutoring in every subject.

Great for these types of students

East Carolina University is great for any type of student. Its diversity is so vast that you will always find other students with interests similar to your own. No matter who you are or where you come from, we will all welcome you with open arms! However, with East Carolina known for putting academics above all, it would be amazing for any students who are serious about their future successes.

    Tips for prospective students

For prospective students my advice is to be responsible for yourself actions. Although East Carolina University is filled with things to do, you must learn to separate fun from when it is time to get work done. Try not to get caught up in the wonderful activities so that you can stay focused on your grades. Also, always walk in groups at night to avoid issues of crime.

    Bang for the buck

Although this is a time of great struggle for our economy, you will not find a better place to receive a proper education. Here at East Carolina University, they do not give you just enough knowledge to get a job, but rather to create them. Your money will be well spent.

East Carolina University should win an award for being the friendliest campus on the land! You will be surrounded by positive energy and love. And if you don't like sports, you will by the time you go to your very first football game! Your ears will be drowned with purple and gold chants as we all come together for the greater cause; to win! With this beautiful campus filled with over 28,000 students you will find yourself closer to everyone than you'd expect.

    Am learning a lot

East Carolina University is very heavy on the academics. The professors here are kind and really wants you to succeed. They allow students to come to their office hours anytime you are struggling, and would even offer to stay after! If that doesn't help, East Carolina University has eager tutors yearning to aid you in the infamous Joyner Library. Learning here is synonymous with the time that you put in your studies. You can do it!

There are buttons all around campus to press if you feel endangered. The campus is in a good area where there is little to no crime and you should feel safe.

    Greek Life

A lot of people end up rushing and they love it. The sororities and fraternities here are all very prestigious and the majority of people join them. They have amazing parties and always throw charity events.

    Clubs and Activities

If you know you want to join a sorority/fraternity or that you want to play sports, this is your school. Being in a fraternity is very common and all of them are prestigious. There are many club sports to choose from so if you don't want to play for the actual team, try club sports or intramural sports!

Great for these types of students

If you like big schools with a small feel, come to ECU! The campus is small and all of the buildings are close together, but there's close to 30,000 students!

The Joyner library has a row of columns that when people walk between, it makes music. During the busier parts of the day, you'll hear a symphony. There's also a clock and at midnight a jester comes out and it is probably the scariest thing you'll ever see.

    What to do for fun

Pirate football is an important part of ECU life. Attending the games are crucial. This school has amazing spirit and seeing everyone in all purple is a beautiful sight. Go to the tailgates! There are always things going on like block parties, and carnivals with free food. The gym is open long hours and going there will help you feel productive and relieve stress. During the week, Downtown is the place to go. There are a bunch of clubs near each other to enjoy. On the quad, you'll always catch people playing sports. hanging in a hammock, or just straight chillin'.

    Food and Dining

There are plenty of places to eat! From the dining hall which is all-you-can-eat, to Subway, to Chick-Fil-A, Starbucks, Einstein Bagels and plenty of other close proximity off campus restaurants, you will never go hungry.

    Dorm Life

When first moving into dorms, make sure to talk to your neighbors! That's the easiest way to make friends because everyone is in the same situation as you as freshman, and they're probably just as nervous as you are. Prepare to enjoy all your freedom but don't enjoy it too much!

ECU is an excellent value for your money, but they will accept you as a transfer student and not tell you the fact that they will transfer anything and everything you have done academically in 31 years and then take away your financial adi an dcharge your 50% more. Watch out for the 150% rule...its a killer!

ECU is set up with an on campus security center and the campus police are always visible. Like anywhere walk in pairs. That's the wisest.

    Greek Life

ECU has a very active Greek Life community. They do a lot of community service and many are the Orientation Assistants and volunteers you meet when you come to campus visits

    Clubs and Activities

Student Government Association and Greek Life.

Great for these types of students

ECU is great for students who are looking for a large University feel in a community environment. And for those who are serious about success.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Halloween weekend can be a bit crazy. Stay focused.

    Bang for the buck

ECU is very affordable for in-state students. The college provides laundry facilities at no additional cost for the machine use and the dorms come with microwave and fridge combo. Sweet.

    What to do for fun

There are lots of events that take place on campus. There's a bowling alley, movie theater (not the recent box hit but close enough), there are local events, plays, and of course lots of sports. Football season is the greatest. Homecoming weekend is live. And no doubt there is a party to attend --only after you get your studying done.

    Food and Dining

There are dining halls in three locations on campus, and we can use Pirate bucks to eat at normal restaurants like Chili's and Chik-fil-a. You get plenty of food in the dining halls --but some times you want a break from the menu.

    Dorm Life

Learning Communities are nice. They provide you the opportunity to live with the same people you learn with. Who have the same classes, same final schedule. Each dorm has its unique pride. Some are smaller than others, but there's always the shared lobby.

    Academic Rigor

The Engineering curriculum is very stimulating. The subject matter is challenging but the Engineering Learning Community is a great place to share wits with other peers in the program.

    Tips for prospective students

Visit the campus, meet with an advisor and finish your last year of high school strong.

    In three sentences

East Carolina provides an excellent and stimulation learning environment. The size of the campus makes it small enough to provide an intimate connection between faculty and students, while its large enough to explore social and recreational activities - always something to do. East Carolina is a top notch school often underrated as a party school my experience has been that ECU provides the conveniences to help any college student who wants success to achieve success.

We have polar bear plunge in the middle of the winter. We jump in groups at a time, in the outdoor pool, at night! It's a good time though. There's this bell dome like thing in the middle of campus called the Cupola, and they say if you walk under there you'll have a horrible semester.

    Bang for the buck

    Food and Dining

The food is usually at a decent quality, and I complain often. I did hear that we have it better than a lot of other schools though, so I went ahead and gave it four stars.

    Dorm Life

Haha, I'm the Residence Hall Association/Government and we're supposed to say RESIDENCE HALL, to make it sound more like home. Some of them are nicer than others, but they're all pretty alright. The people are better than the dorms in my case. My roommate on the other hand, whole different situation but hey, that kind of stuff happens.

    Academic Rigor

I'm getting much better, I used to procrastinate a lot which is why it's the first advice I ever give.

    Tips for prospective students

Never procrastinate, your first year will be so much better. Try to participate in all that you can, going to events, and maybe join a club or two. It is what you make it, so try new things, and have fun.

i love ecu and it's so affordable. it may be cheaper than other universities out there, but keep in mind we have our own med school, so that's a plus for you pre-med majors. i think our academic vigor is just as good as any other school too.

    What to do for fun

i often go downtown because it's right next to my dorm, but there's also mendenhall student center, which is the building for clubs, watching free movies, bowling, and billiards.

    Food and Dining

the food is pretty good, but it always depends on who's in the kitchen. but over all the food is good, and brunch is my favorite meal of the day, most of the staff is really nice too.

    Dorm Life

dorm life is cool. you get to meet a lot of new people, but at times, your neighbors can get pretty loud while you're trying to study for a major test the next morning.

    Academic Rigor

i think that the classes are pretty challenging, but if you make an attempt to go to class and do the assignment, then you should be fine.

    Tips for prospective students

bring rain boots and an umbrella. as the saying goes, ecu stands for everyone carries an umbrella. it's best to stay on campus your freshmen year so you can get to know the campus better.

    In three sentences

east carolina is a small, but i assure you that it's comfortable and right next to downtown. everyone here is really nice, with the exception of a couple professors and dorm mates. it's perfect for you if you want to don't want to walk 3o minutes to class every day.

there all sorts of clubs for people to join. you just have to look for one.

    Food and Dining

food here is not the best, but it is enough to live off of. the dining halls have things that no one wants to eat and usually i just go for the fries and a burger. the only time food is really good and when the parental units come around.

    Dorm Life

well if you want person space forget it. you trade that off for a social life and great friends to be around. dorm room aren't big, but they are not to small either. they have just enough room to sleep and do homework in.

    Academic Rigor

decent not hard just have to go to class. some classes might be harder than others, but if you just pay attention, read your book, and take notes you will do fine.

    Tips for prospective students

campus safety is great. there are multiple programs set up on campus and around campus to keep you safe. of course, you need to have common sense.

    What to do for fun

it's a smaller town but there is a downtown that is geared for college students, a small mall, and a lake nearby. this is a big sports school too.

    Food and Dining

not the best food in the world, especially in the dining halls. but the selection is great. if you don't want to eat at the dining hall there is chic-fil-a, einstein's bagels, pizza, mexican, hamburgers, etc. you do not lack food here.

    Dorm Life

it's a dorm, not home. so don't expect it to be. the halls are cleaned every day. the rooms are surprisingly spacious (i actually ended up bringing more stuff from home.) it can be loud at times but most of the time it's ok. you have internet, cable tv, fridge/microwave, air and heat. and if you live on campus you're required to have a meal plan.

    Academic Rigor

school is work. some classes will be easier than others but chemistry and biology doesn't come by just showing up to class. you have to study.

    Campus Safety

Personally I believe any college town has its dangers. You have to be careful of your surroundings at night and where you are. You also want to make sure that you are not alone. At ECU the campus makes sure lights are on 24/7 and their are also emergency call towers located all over campus to immediately reach 911 if you are having a problem.

    Greek Life

Personally I am not in a frat or sorority but I do know a lot of people who are. It is a great way to meet new people and get yourself involved. The main excuse for not joining is the price but at East Carolina you can actually apply for financial aid to help you pay if you really want to be a part of the Greek life.

    Clubs and Activities

East Carolina has a great variety of different clubs and activities available for the students. These range from club sports teams to the adventure club where you can go kayaking or rock climbing, to the drama or art clubs. No matter what your interest I guarantee their is a club here that will fit anyone.

Great for these types of students

East Carolina is great for types of students who want to earn a great education while enjoying college to the fullest. You do need to have some self control however and need to know when it is time to study and when it is time to party.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The only unusual location on campus that I can think of is the clock tower in front of the library. At midnight on nights with a full moon people have seen a clown come out of the clock. The clock also does different things at different hours of the day. Here is a good video that shows you all four. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBUmrD0d81I

    What to do for fun

East Carolina is known as a party school and it lived up to its name. Their is always something going on whether in the dorms or a nearby apartment complex and everyone is very friendly. Downtown Greenville is probably the main attraction for the night life as this is where all the clubs are and is packed almost every Thursday through Saturday. If clubbing isn't for you East Carolina has a student center open all night that has a bowling alley, movie theater, arcade room with pool tables, and various other lounges that allow students to interact with each other.

    Food and Dining

The food at East Carolina is pretty good. The dining halls usually offer three to four different main courses for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and also have a buffet for sides and salads.

    Dorm Life

Personally I lived in an apartment my first year of school and it was great. The freedom to be able to live on my own was an awesome experience. I have some friends that live in dorms though and after visiting them I kind of wish I lived in the dorms. It is probably the best way to meet new people as everyone else is in the same position as you and eager to make friends.

    Academic Rigor

College is not supposed to be easy but it is manageable. You really have to go to class, pay attention, and apply yourself in order to learn everything as best as you can. Everyone has their strong points though and some classes are extremely easy while others can have you worrying throughout the semester. The point is to work hard and if you need help dont be afraid to ask.

    Tips for prospective students

My main tip is to make sure you balance your academic and personal lives. Grades are very important and you have to work hard to earn them but college is also about the experience and it is good to take an earned break from school every now and again to enjoy it. My second tip is to make sure you speak with your academic adviser so that way you guys are one the same page. So far my adviser has helped me with a lot of things and I am glad that I am able to ask her about anything. My last tip is to make sure that you register for classes EARLY! Take the extra time to plan out your courses for the semester a week before registration. That way when classes open up you know exactly what classes you plan to take and you will have a better chance at getting the schedule you want.

    In three sentences

So far East Carolina has been everything and more that I have expected. East Carolinas campus is the perfect size and the overall attitude of the student population is very positive and friendly. Not only is it a very enjoyable campus because of the people but the college is becoming more academically prestigious with majors such as nursing and business, because of the hard work and dedication put in by both the professors and students.

Many students spend their weekends going down town, which is located right next to the West End of Campus. This is great state-run university. It is more difficult than a community college, but not as rigorous as a private school. If you are prepared to study and work hard, then you should do fine.

    Tips for prospective students

There is a lot of free time. You should be prepared to balance your own homework, extracurricular activities, and social life.

East Carolina University is the best four year school on the East Coast of North Carolina!

    What to do for fun

East Carolina is probably one of the top schools in the nation that is known for fun. Its location is almost on top of the downtown experience and the football games are what get the students out of bed after pulling all-nighters.

    Food and Dining

The food is amazing! You can choose from a handful of chain restaurants like chikfila or chili's or of course the dining halls that always have a wide variety of choices from vegetarian to low calorie.

    Dorm Life

All of the dorms are being renovated (2012) and the new designs are to die for! You have all of the options that a college could offer. You could choose the suite style dorms near the stadium or more cozy rooms near the classes.

    Academic Rigor

All of the courses at East Carolina University are just as hard as any school. In any courses under the school of business, nursing, and any sort of engineering and science program, you will find yourself studying constantly.

    Tips for prospective students

Always check the bus schedules before you go out because the bus routes change midday. Buy the parking pass! They are always out handing out tickets like clockwork.

    In three sentences

This school is the perfect balance of fun and great academics! From the tailgating parties before the games all the way to the beautifully kept lawns, East Carolina has everything you need to get you through those long nights with your nose in a book!

    Campus Safety

Police on guard at all times of day on and around campus. There are also buttons you can press on campus and in some dorms and apartment complexes if you feel unsafe and it will call the police for help.

    Greek Life

Lots of sororities and fraternities to join for everyone. Even a volunteer one that only costs $25.00 a month in case you are worried about the costs.

    Clubs and Activities

Various clubs and sports to be a part of. There is an adventure club as well that takes students on hiking, rock climbing and kayaking trips. Also, sports events are incredibly popular; especially football. Everyone wears their purple and gold all across town and tailgates around every corner for the football games.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

You are not supposed to walk under the cupola in the middle of campus because it is said to be bad luck and that if you do so you will not graduate on time. Also, the ECU squirrels on campus have a mind of their own and are very popular amongst the student body, they even have their own facebook page. There is said to be a cannon that comes out of the huge grandfather clock above the Joyner library that pops out and shoots at midnight.

    What to do for fun

There are parks, bike trails, sports events, clubs, movies in the auditorium on campus, two movie theaters, a huge gym free for students, restaurants around town, a mall and shopping boutiques, and a lot of bars and nightlife, as well.

    Food and Dining

There are plenty of places to eat on and off campus at various price ranges. Most are acceptable for a college student's budget.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is great! You'll meet so many new people of all types because freshmen have to live on campus their first year. You will make a lot of friends and learn about a lot of activities provided on campus or in your dorm.

    Academic Rigor

ECU is about as average as they come, overall within academic rigor standards for a 4 year bachelors degree; however, if you plan to attend honors college or get a masters you can expect a more intensive workload, of course. Also, depending on which courses you take they may be more writing intensive than others, or perhaps more mathbased within science and mathematical courses.

    Tips for prospective students

You should maintain an average GPA or better. Keep yourself busy in school to help the time fly by and do not forget to study just as often as you do go out and have fun! You will enjoy yourself and make many lifelong friends at this university.

    In three sentences

ECU is a great southern school to attend, with a diverse community of students, plenty of activities to do, and a lot of fun all-around. It has many clubs to offer for all GPA types and many fraternity and sorority opportunities for all. There are many great teachers and many outstanding sports teams and events to attend.

    Academic Rigor

One of the best school with very good overall ratings on education.

The speakers at my orientation put much emphasis on campus safety. It's nice to know I can have a police walk me back to my dorm if I ever feel unsafe.

    Food and Dining

The food was okay. It's what I expected for college food though.

    Dorm Life

I haven't had much of a glimpse of dorm life yet.

    Academic Rigor

At orientation the speakers put much emphasis on academics.

    Tips for prospective students

    Bang for the buck

When you go to ECU there are a lot of things you get for going, a huge recreational center with an indoor pool, a rock climbing wall, racket ball rooms, basketball courts, a weight lifting section, and rooms for group classes.

    What to do for fun

There is a lot to do in Greenville, the only thing is that most college students don't have a lot of money to spare, so I just hungout with friends, read books, and played video games to have fun.

    Food and Dining

I'm not a picky eater, so I loved the dining hall food because they gave you several options of things to eat. I lived in central campus, so we were the furthest away from the two dining halls, even so, the dining halls were only a ten minute walk if you're a slow walker. There are more places to eat on campus then just the dining halls, there is a chili's, subway, chic-a-flet, and more to eat at.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life depends, again, on the person. I personally hated the fact that I had to share bathrooms with other male students and did not get to have my own groceries. That being said, it was great because most of my classes were only a five minute walk from my dorm.

    Academic Rigor

Academic rigor depends on the person and major. If you take college seriously then any class can be hard, unless the student has already learned the material, but even then there will be some information that is new. The only major I can personally speak for is engineering, which is a hard major because it is a science and math heavy major.

    Tips for prospective students

The only tips I have for future students are things I failed to do my first year; first, get tutoring if you don't feel confident you'll do well in a class, second, do not take any class lightly because that's how you end up failing, and lastly, study - even if that means just lightly going through the materials so nothing on the tests will be a surprise.

    In three sentences

ECU is a great school that tends to have bad reputation because some of the students like to party. Any college you go to is what you make it, not what others make it for themselves; meaning just because ECU is known for partying doesn't mean one cannot receive a good education.

    Food and Dining

Though the food at the cafeteria gets a little old after a while because a lot of the same foods are repeated, there's plenty of other places on campus that you can eat at that serve great food, including a Chili's!

    Dorm Life

I'm so glad that I spent my first year living in a dorm on campus. I would say the dorms at the West End are the best because you're so close to the library, rec. center, cafeteria, and student center, and classes are only about a 6-10 minute walk away.

    Academic Rigor

Though I took a few tough courses, I surprisingly loved all of my professors first and second semester. So many of the professors at ECU are so kind and willing to help. All you have to do is make the effort to meet them during their office hours and most are more than happy to help you out. And of course college courses aren't going to be easy, but as long as you use your resources wisely such as the professors, library, and free tutoring, getting good grades is not hard at all!

    In three sentences

ECU is an AMAZING school!! I recently finished my first year there and there's nothing I could've done to make it any better! The best thing about ECU is that everyone there LOVES it and has so much pride in the school and its sports teams.

Mendenhall student center is a great place to go to get involved in fun activities. Right beside that is the student recreation center and they have lots of activities also. Let's not forget about the sporting events! That's the only way to truly be a Pirate!

    Food and Dining

There are lots of choices and locations to chose from on and near campus.

    Dorm Life

Making friends around your location and getting involved in dorm activities are the best way to make a this fun.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't come to school thinking it's going to be easy because work actually has to be done to get where you want to go. It's okay to party but just make sure that school comes first. ECU is known as a party school but you will find partying at any school, we just embrace ours and acknowledge that it goes on. We do distinguish the difference between work and play though.

    Food and Dining

Good food, buffet food in cafeteria. Restaurants in the school. In my opinion the charge is a bit much but it can't be any less at any other schools.

    Dorm Life

Amazing. You meet some of the coolest, nicest, people from all over. You form everlasting friendships. The dorms are not bad at all.

    Academic Rigor

Not all fun and games. Remember you're there to get a degree.

    Campus Safety

Safety around campus is a major priority! We have our own ECU campus police...as well as the Greenville police making sure students are safe. Police are always willing to escort you where you need to go...they're literally a phone call away. There's also emergency posts set up around campus that with the push of a button, you are connected directly with the police! It really makes you feel safe anywhere on campus!

    What to do for fun

Football games are a big deal in Greenville. But, there's no feeling like sitting in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium partaking in the traditions that are a part of a Pirate football game! Also, there's always a party going on...whether it be a Greek party or something is happening downtown. You will never be bored! :)

    Food and Dining

There is a variety of what you can eat. You can sit down in the dining hall for all you can eat...or grab a snack at the student store. It all just depends on what your schedule will allow you to do. :) But, there's a ton to choose from!

    Dorm Life

Dorm Life is a blast! Living with your best friend and meeting new people was the most exciting part for me! :) Just be aware that you are on the floor with a bunch of other people. Be considerate of others...there are other places you can be loud all hours of the night if that's what your into. :)

    Academic Rigor

It just depends on your major. For a fact, nursing students have a rigorous course schedule planned out for them. Other majors give a bit more lee-way as far as what classes. Just know what is required, but also take what you're interested in.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you are prepared for the classes! Don't get caught up in the downtown/party life...many experience the Turkey Drop (don't come back to school after Thanksgiving Break) Know what you can and cannot do in dorms... Come prepared to have a good time and to learn! :)

    In three sentences

ECU is academically and athletically, a FANTASTIC school! ECU is diverse in people, meaning a ton of new and different friends. ECU is a chance to recreate yourself for the next four years! :)

I can definitely tell the difference between high school and college. A lot more is expected from you.

    Tips for prospective students

Go to class. My roommate never goes and we're only a few weeks in and she's starting to see how it hurts her grades. What's the point of going to college if you're not GOING to college? Lectures are where I've met half of my new friends.

    In three sentences

ECU is a very diverse campus, but within the first few weeks, it's home. I can't imagine what it would have been like attending any other school. The community and the students are all welcoming and I feel honored to be part of the ECU family.

Great for these types of students

I am a distance education students and I have never been in a program where the faculty and instructors were as dedicated to your success as they are at ECU. They truly want you to do well and when you're not learning in a face-to-face environment, that is really important.

    Food and Dining

The food is good on campus and if you're looking for something off campus, there are lots of choices within walking distance.

    Dorm Life

I do not live on campus because I am a distance education student, but I do know that they are plenty of opportunities for those students who do live on campus.

    Academic Rigor

My classes are tough, but the instructors are ready to answer any questions you have about the material. The education you receive is worth any difficulty you might have because you know that the instructors are knowledgeable.

    Tips for prospective students

Take a tour of the campus and ask questions. If you are going to attend seated courses, live on campus. If you are going as a distance education student, make sure that you connect with other students.

    In three sentences

I love this school. The faculty is helpful and the instructors know what they are talking about. My advisor checks in with me regularly and always keeps me up to date on upcoming opportunities for financial aid and instructional opportunities outside the classroom.

    Campus Safety

Safety is a top priority at ECU. We have our own campus police that continuously patrol campus as well as these intercom systems placed around campus. If you push a button on one of them it sends a call directly to a police officer and you can talk to them. If you're running there's also these blue lights on the top so you can push one and you'll always be able to see the next one to run to so that the police can track where they are and find you. ECU also has tons of programs on campus safety.

    Greek Life

There are a ton of different fraternities and sororities at ECU. Most of them are social which means their purpose is to help their members with networking and interacting in a social environment. The other types are professional, service, and academic/honors. Professional fraternities focus on goals for a specific career path. Service fraternities focus on community service. Academic/Honors fraternities strive for academic excellence and will usually have a much higher GPA requirement than the other fraternities. With all of these choices there's something for everyone that wants to participate in Greek Life.

    Clubs and Activities

There are over 350 registered clubs on campus. Pretty much whatever you're interested in they'll have a club for. If they don't then you can start your own club!

Great for these types of students

ECU is great for people going into the medical field, such as nursing, education, or anything in the arts. I know people in all kinds of majors however and they have been very successful.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

One tradition is to never walk under the cupola on central campus. There's a superstition that if you walk under it you won't graduate on time. There's also this one walkway outside of Joyner Library that plays music as you walk on it.

    Bang for the buck

ECU is pretty typical in terms of costs compared to other North Carolina schools. It's definitely a lot cheaper if you can get in-state tuition.

    What to do for fun

There's a lot of really fun things to do on campus. The movie theatre on campus is free to students as well as up to two guests. For a small fee you can also play pool or go bowling. The Student Recreation Center has a huge gym, an indoor running track, an indoor and an outdoor pool, five racquetball courts, and a climbing wall. The North Recreational Complex has a disc golf course, a boat house, trails, and an Odyssey course. There are also several volleyball courts on campus. There's also a ton of clubs you can join and you can also get involved in Greek life. Of course there are always a ton of people for you to relax and hang out with. Going to football games is probably one of the most fun things to do here though. ECU has probably the most school spirit out of any school in North Carolina so the games are insane!

    Food and Dining

There are many places to eat on campus. ECU has two dining halls, two Chick fil As, two Subways, three burger places, Chili's, a sandwich shop, a Tex-Mex place, two pizza places, a bagel shop, a juice bar, three coffee shops, and two convenience stores. The meal plans range from 9 meals to 19 meals a week. You can use a meal to buy meals at the dining halls or what are called Pirate Meals from other food locations. When you're buying anything else a meal will give you a certain amount of money to spend depending on the meal period. The rest of the cost can be paid with pirate bucks which also come with your meal plan and are like tax-free cash. ECU also has commuter meal plans and you can add pirate bucks onto your card at anytime. Unfortunately, like most college dining halls, even with all of the dining choices you will probably get tired of the dining halls after a while. I also think they could be healthier.

    Dorm Life

It is highly recommended that you live in a dorm your freshman year. Living on campus really immerses you into life at ECU. There are many different kinds of dorms but the most broad categories would be hall style and suites. Hall style dorms make up the majority of dorms at ECU where an entire hall shares one community bathroom. These dorms are nice though because you get to interact with people in your hall more. Then there's suites which share a bathroom with 3, 2, or just your room depending on the dorm. The benefit of these dorms is that the bathroom is right there and you don't have to share it with so many people, though you are more isolated from other people in your dorm. ECU also offers two women's only dorms; the rest are co-ed. Living in the dorms is a great way to get to know ECU's campus as well as building relationships with the people around you. It also comes with free laundry so that's a huge plus.

    Academic Rigor

It is very challenging depending on the classes you take. I came from a rigorous high school and I still was surprised at just how much work ECU really is. It is definitely manageable though. There is also the Honors College for students who did exceptionally well in high school.

    Tips for prospective students

My advice is to not come to this school thinking it's going to be an easy ride. The reason we have such a low retention rate is because of people coming in with that mindset and then finding out that it's actually really challenging. It is true that some majors are easier than others but even the most basic introductory classes here are sometimes very challenging. If you come here willing to work hard and stay organized you should have no problems though.

    In three sentences

East Carolina University is not the party school people make it out to be. Every school is a party school if you want it to be; it's what you make of it. It is very challenging but still a lot of fun and everyone has so much school spirit here!

    Campus Safety

Safety on campus is great, however the surrounding areas can be pretty sketchy. Never walk alone at night around campus or down town because the crime rate is pretty high in Greenville.

    Greek Life

Greek Life here is a pretty big deal. I am in a sorority and I love it. If yo are interested in greek life, ECU is a great place. We have many different sororities and fraternities to join.

    What to do for fun

There are alot of things to do for fun here at ECU. There is literaly ALWAYS something going on. IF you like clubs and bars then down town is the perfect place for you. If you would rather go to a party, then just ask around. Chances are there are probably about 50 different parties going on. If neither of these interest you, then there are many other options. There is a bowling alley on campus and there is also a movie theatre.

    Food and Dining

The dining hall offers a lot of different options, but after a while you tend to get tired of the same options. Luckily there is a chick fil a, subway, and many other options to choose from.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is a great thing for ECU freshman. Since all freshman are required to live on campus there first year, it makes it very easy to meet other students that are in the same boat as you. There are many activities provided for students living in dorms, and they are all free!

    Academic Rigor

The work isn't that rigorous, its just the change from high chool teachers to professors that makes the work seem harder. You need to frequently check the teachers syllabus, and the work isn't that hard.

    Tips for prospective students

I'm a freshmna this year, and I knew ECU was a party school, but I didn't realize this was everyday of the week. It doesn't matter what day of the week it is, there is ALWAYS something going on. Many students miss classes due to staying out late, but one of the most important things is going to class,

My dorm has a food court, fitness room and laundry room on every other floor so everything is convenient which leaves more time for homework and studying. The bathrooms aren't the greatest.

    What to do for fun

There are events held by the SAB organization almost every other day that students can go to with their friends. They usually have movies, games outside, or cultural learning activities. The campus also has a bowling alley that students can go to for a night wit friends.

    Food and Dining

The dining halls aren't very good but sometimes you get lucky and they make something you enjoy. The sanitary rating for me would be low because they reuse cups, forks, and plates. The flavor of the food is most of the time poor.

    Dorm Life

Sometimes it can be a hard transition when a student is forced to live with a person they have never met. Those students can make it easier by communicating and respecting their roommate. Overall the rooms are a decent size.

    Academic Rigor

The heart of the university overall is in the connection the students have with each other and the professors. Students help each other succeed and professors give you the material and skills you need to grow. After succeeding in courses student push themselves further by applying that material for hands on activities such as research or internships.

    Tips for prospective students

Donâ??t procrastinate. Plan ahead. Be productive. Know what you need and donâ??t think about what you want. Handle the big tasks before the small. Pace yourself.

    In three sentences

There are a lot of activities and organizations for students to be involved on the campus with peers. It was a great transition from the high school environment because faculty is greatly helpful. Campus Safety

Campus safety is top notch. There are officers everywhere, and they do a great job. There are of course stupid things you can do to get yourself in trouble like going to the ATM at 3 AM, or go downtown alone. But as far as normal campus life is concerned, it's safe.

There's the student center with a theater, pool hall and arcade, and bowling alley. There's also a very active Greek Life on campus. You're never at a loss at what to do for fun,.

    Food and Dining

Breakfast is the best in the dining halls here. They have a big country breakfast with eggs, bacon, hash browns, sausage, biscuits and gravy, grits. They also have an omelet station, and cereal. Dinner is good too, with lots of options. There's also a lot of options of alternative places around campus. 2 Chick-Fil-A's, a Subway, Chili's, Einstein Bagel Bro's. Lots of options you can choose from. You can even get good sushi here.

    Dorm Life

I love my dorm, I live in Tyler Hall which has been newly renovated. I love all the RA's and most of the people on my hall. I'm on al all freshman floor, and my floor is known as the loudest one unfortunately. I get kept up at night a lot, but it's not that bad. I just need quiet to sleep.

    Academic Rigor

This is college, so don't expect to breeze through classes just as easily as high school. From my experience so far, teachers aren't unreasonable with the assignment load though, and I have great professors so I learn a lot.

    Tips for prospective students

    What to do for fun

At ECU you'll find a social environment unlike any other. Here there are people from all different backgrounds that will open your mind and contradict your prior judgments and/or stereotypes about things. Most people would say that the local frat parties are fun, but I beg to differ knowing from experience. Here at ECU there is more than just parties; extracurricular activities like jujitsu, dancing, rock climbing, and swimming are enough to keep anyone busy.

    Food and Dining

The food here is supported on a meal plan where you get a number of meals that can be used at any store on campus. The only catch is that the meals only subtract 2-4$ off whatever you purchase at the restaurants on campus, deducting the rest off the total pirate bucks you get with each meal plan. However, you can use these meals at the cafetieres and get descent meal without taking from your pirate bucks. The Pirate bucks work like bonus bucks, you get a certain amount at the beginning of each semester depending on your meal plan. The pirate bucks are actually quite convenient being that you can use them on literally anything available in the student stores and restaurants, not just for food.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are workable with a little creativity, and due to the house keeping staff, nothing ever gets to dirty to where it is unbearable. However, with so much to do, no one ever stays in their dorms to long to notice.

    Academic Rigor

The academic struggle at ECU is a myth, here they have tutoring centers, mentor programs, and top notch professors that will help you understand the criteria for whatever major you plan on pursuing.

    Tips for prospective students

Advice for future students would be not to live life so fast and to focus on what's really going to be important in the future, your education. Another tip would be, go to class, pay attention, and get involved.

    In three sentences

ECU is a fun, exciting, and interesting place with people from all over the world coming to study here. Though it is a party school, ECU is more than just partying, it is a collaboration of intelligent people supporting every major you can think of. The professor here are also some of the best in the country, with up to 7 award winning professors in just our science department alone. ECU is truly a place to broaden your mind and your experiences.

There are varieties of food spots all around campus, and they are all in short walking distance no matter where you are. Within the dining hall there are great varieties of food to choose from as well.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is something to get adjusted too. I personally have a great roommate and we interact very well. You will get accustomed to the hall bathrooms, it is not as bad as everyone makes them seem.

    Academic Rigor

Teachers are sooo helpful here! If you go talk to them during their office hours, they really take that initiative to help you and make sure that you are able to understand the information on or after test. You have to be able to balance out social life and work life to be able to stay ahead because academics are first !

    Tips for prospective students

Dont be too worried about coming here and not knowing anyone, everyone here is coming here with the same issue. Get involved ! There is a lot of clubs and organizations that can meet your personality, hobbies, and interests !

    In three sentences

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is every effective. Throughout campus there are emergency stations that have a distress button that when pressed will activate a flashing light and emit a distress call to the police. Campus police also roam campus on rounds throughout the day and night. Onestop will also have alerts sent out to students of any unusual activity and to be on the lookout for any suspicious men or women on campus.

    Clubs and Activities

My favorite collegiate activity that I participated in was Scuba Club. This is just an example of the types of hands-on clubs ECU has to offer. It offered certifications as a scuba diver on several different levels. Student government gives students the opportunity to have a voice and orchestrate events for the University.

Great for these types of students

East Carolina is great for every type of student. The variety of majors to be chosen from as well as the selection of extra curricular activities ensures that there is something for everyone.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

In the winter there is what's called the Polar Bear Plunge at the gym. Students jump into an ice filled outdoor pool before climbing out and running to the indoor pool to warm up. It's a great way to participate in student life and it will earn you a t-shirt and a good story!

    Bang for the buck

I love taking advantage of the meal plan. It can be used for food at any of the dining facilities on campus and the pirate bucks on the plan can be used to buy supplies such as household cleaners or school supplies.

    What to do for fun

There's always something to do on campus. Mendenhall has an auditorium that plays movies most weekends as well as a pool hall and bowling alley. Barefoot on the mall in the spring has games, give-aways, and bands. Sporting events are another way to have a great time; show Pirate pride at the basketball games or tailgate and pull for purple and gold during football season!

    Food and Dining

The dining halls and other stops around campus are convenient and delicious. West campus as a Subway next to West End, main campus as a Starbucks and the hill has Todd. Dining halls always carry a few staples such as pizza and salads, but sometimes they will mix it up by having a Mexican night, or fried okra and collards.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is a great way to be introduced to college life. Resident advisors will often schedule monthly gatherings that range from ice cream socials to game nights. It's a perfect way to make friends, meet new people, and network.

    Academic Rigor

Academic competitiveness can vary from class to class, however most professors ensure that the curriculum is rigorous. They make sure that their students learn the material, some through lecture, pop-quizes, or regular exams.

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared to budget your time and use it wisely. This goes for your money as well. If you focus on whats important as far as classwork and necessary expenditures, you'll be set. If not, you may fall behind quickly. Also if you decide to live in the dorms, learn how to live with the bare essentials. Rooms can be small, so be selective

    In three sentences

East Carolina University is stimulating, engaging, and has a very active student life. Its location is within minimal driving distance to multiple points of interest such as shopping and dining. The campus layout makes it very easy to commute to and from campus whether walking or driving.

The student to teacher ratio is designed in a way that everyone receives adequate learning.

    Campus Safety

The cops are on campus 24/7 and keep you as safe as possible. Just like any other college their are minor things that go on that you get emails about but ECU police and campus safety is really good at keeping you safe.

    Greek Life

I personally am not in a sorority but i think that it is a good experience if that is what you want to do. I have friends that are in sorority's and they love it, it just depends on you as a person. Some people love it and some people hate it.

    Clubs and Activities

There are SO many clubs to get involved in, and at the beginning of the year they hold club fairs for you to go too and to see what you might enjoy doing. There are club sports to get involved in, service clubs, and just fun clubs to get to know people. There is certainly a club for everyone at ECU.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is a place on campus, where there is a tower and you are not supposed to walk under it or you are predicted not to graduate.

    Bang for the buck

Any education you get will be worth your while and your money as long as your studying and making good grades.

    What to do for fun

Clubs are always fun, doing something that you enjoy and getting to know more people while doing it. Also football games, ECU's school spirit is phenomenal and the games are so much fun. And of course, the partying is really fun.

    Food and Dining

The dining hall is alright on certain nights, but the best part is the on campus chick-fil-a and chills and different places to eat. I also love that in my dorm we pretty much have a fast food court downstairs equipped with subway, a mexican place, pizza place, and a burger place. It is great!

    Dorm Life

The dorm life is amazing, Freshman experience is the way to go. You meet so many new people because your doing activities with your dorm, and always doing something fun. I think that it is a great experience to live in the dorm because you meet so many new people.

    Academic Rigor

I think it depends on your classes, some classes are easier than others. It also depends on your major and what your good at. Some students are better at some classes than others.

    Tips for prospective students

Study hard to reach your goals, make sure that its not all about partying. Make sure that you love what your majoring in because when you get out in the real world you don't want to be stuck doing something you hate. Really pick classes that your going to enjoy because you will succeed in those.

    Campus Safety

The campus itself is quite safe, their are emergency buttons situated all across campus but this does not apply to the area outside campus. Always travel with a group when going downtown are heading off campus and make use of the buses offered for students if you need to be on campus later at night. I have never personally felt threatened but I have heard of quite a few people being robbed when downtown.

    Greek Life

I am not a member of any House but the houses on campus are very active around the community and work hard at recruiting new members.

    Clubs and Activities

As I previously said ECU has a club for just about everyone and just about everyday some kind of event is happening on or around campus.

Great for these types of students

Sociable students will love ECU and it's community. During school some event is always happening and there are plenty of things to do to occupy your free time. For those students who prefer smaller groups there are plenty of community areas for students to relax with each other and nearby downtown have some very nice coffee and dessert places to hang out at.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

One of the biggest (and the event I enjoy the most) is called Barefoot on the Mall. In the center of ECU campus is a forested area that is set up for students to relax in. On the day of Barefoot in the Mall a concert is held in the Mall area along with booths that consist of the many clubs ECU has and many other fun diversions to spend time at. It's a great chance to meet up with friends and take a break from your studies to hang out and have fun.

    Bang for the buck

Ecu has been steadily rising in price, I believe in the last two semester it has raised over five hundred dollars. While still considered a cheaper university than most of the one's around it is far more expensive than a community college. I made a mistake coming here without having something or someone to bolster my funds so if you plan on enrolling make sure to have some money saved up or have won some scholarships to help pay, a low paying job won't cut it and you will need to take out some loans. However, with a solid fund base ECU is a wonderful school that offers something for everyone.

    What to do for fun

If your more the social type there are plenty of events going on downtown to keep you occupied, from clubs to local music bands and plenty of other gatherings. Almost everyday on campus some kind of event is being offered for students and at least once every week or two their are large events that plenty of students attend. There are also plenty of extracurricular clubs offered that have almost every-one's interests covered and are also a great way to meet other students.

    Food and Dining

Ecu uses a system of electronic money named pirate bucks and something called a meal plan that allows you passes into community buffet areas situated on campus. The food is not the finest in all the world but they try to rotate the menu's and provide plenty of variety between the day to day selection. Not the tastiest of food but the selection usually offers something for every-one's taste.

    Dorm Life

As of now every younger freshmen coming to ECU must live on campus. While some dislike this policy, I think it was actually a good choice. Living on campus keeps you close to all the events ECU hosts and really helps the students get used to living apart from their families. It gives you a chance to mingle with all the other fellow students on campus and meet up with some really cool people. The biggest complaint I have is the fact that the dorms are just so cramped, the space issue can be a big problem for some people.

    Academic Rigor

I find the electives offered are often more laid back and relaxed but the primary courses needed can prove to be quite difficult. However, In the classes I have taken I have found that just talking with the professor and getting to know them is a huge help in any class. Usually the professor's will try to work with you as long as it's not the very last moment. The biggest killer for grades is procrastination, as long as you can keep up with the workload the classes themselves usually progress smoothly.

    Tips for prospective students

Take advantage of being able to take the SAT and ACT multiple times the standards for getting ECU has been greatly climbing recently and a strong score can help raise you above the competition.

    In three sentences

ECU is known for being a party school, which is true to a degree, but this label does not do justice to the dedicated staff and active student government. ECU has a lot more to offer than wild weekends, there is a strong community there that encourages all it's students to engage with their fellow classmates. It's a school for all tastes.

on a sunny day its always great to do your studying on the mall, which is a large grassy area in the center of campus.

    What to do for fun

I always take advantage of the recreation center at west end. the gym is amazing and there are so many things you can do. there are always work out classes to take and you can almost always find a machine to use. my personal favorite is the suspended indoor track.

    Food and Dining

the dining facilities are wonderful. I most frequently go to the west end dining hall, which always has a lot of things to choose from. the quality of food is about as nice as college food can get, and the staff is always nice.

    Dorm Life

Dorms are clean and most are newly renovated. I stayed in Greene residence hall and all the facilities are nice. They only drawback is the shower heads are about 5'5, so if you're taller than that it can be difficult to wash your hair.

    Academic Rigor

I've completed one semester at ECU. Though some classes were difficult, once you learn which study habits work it gets a lot better.

    Tips for prospective students

I recommend all prospective students to take full advantage of the tutoring centers on campus. They are free and have flexible hours, so theres no reason not to go.

    Food and Dining

Dining hall food is actually really really good! There's a lot of variety, you just have to walk around campus to find it.

    Dorm Life

Everyone is friendly, you make friends really easily with the people in your hall. The dorms are placed conveniently around campus.

    Academic Rigor

Anything is possible, even the grades you strive for, if you put enough effort and want to achieve them badly enough.

Both dining halls are very well staffed and cook great food! With lots of choices for everyone ( vegetarian and gluten-free options included).

    Campus Safety

I feel pretty safe whenever I am on campus. There are plenty of emergency stations around campus. ECU makes sure students know numbers such as the campus police, safe ride, and other things to protect students. We do occasionally get ECU alerts of some crazy thing that has happened around the campus, but some of the people these things happen to didn't make great decisions such as being out alone at 2 and 3 in the morning. It is pretty much the same anywhere, make smart choices, stay in lit areas, and do not travel alone.

    Greek Life

Greek life at ECU is okay. We have Panhellenic sororities and fraternities. There are also other service and social sororities and frats. I am in a social sorority called Phi Beta Chi, it is definitely a decision I will never regret!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Purple/Gold cheer Football announcer: its a first down crowd: Pirates ARRRGGGGHHH!!!! Definitely need to visit Sup dogs they are awesome :)

    Food and Dining

I give food and dining 4 stars because I like the campus restaurants, but not the dining hall. It isn't that the food is nasty I am just a picky person sometimes. They have a lot of choices for every meal on campus. There is a chic-fil-a, 2 Subways, Einstein bagels, 2 dining halls, and a few other campus restaurants. The meal plans are kind of pricey, but when you live on campus it is kind of worth it. ECU is changing the way they do meal plans so I am not sure how it works now.

    Dorm Life

I did not like living in the dorms because of the roommate situation. During my freshman year I had two roommates through the year and both were terrible. The first got kicked out of our dorm in the third week of school for reasons I cannot say. Other than my unfriendly and nasty roommates the rooms are pretty spacious. You get your own bed, closet, desk, and dresser. There is also a mini fridge and a microwave for you to share with your roommate. I would recommend rooming with someone you know or get to know your roommate over the summer before school starts.

    Tips for prospective students

The first semester you come in to ECU make sure you focus on all of your classes. Once you start off good keep it going do not slack or it WILL hurt your g.p.a. a lot. Organization is key. I would keep a planner of upcoming assignment due dates and events going on around campus. Time management is also important especially for intended nursing students. For intended nursing, if you want to stay on the track ECU has planned out organization and no procrastination is highly important.

    In three sentences

East Carolina University is an awesome school to attend. In past years it has been said that it is a party school, but it all depends on the person. They offer a lot of opportunities for students, they really want to see us reach our goals.

At ECU, the food is surprisingly very good. The dining hall serves quality food and a plethora of options for every meal. There are any places to go on campus as well such as a Starbucks, a bagel place, and Italian place, Chick-fil-a, Subway, and more. All of these places take the meal plan on your student card the same way the dining hall takes the meal plan. There are so many options no one can ever complain.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is a one of a kind experience. I wouldn't want to do it again, but if I could go back, I wouldn't do it any differently my freshman year... The dorm is where you make lifelong friends, have unforgettable stories, make crazy memories, and find out how to be on your own. It is different from being at home, but it is just as fun as you could imagine it to be.

    Academic Rigor

People who attend ECU are bright and driven. The classes are tough and make you work, but the teachers are amazing and help students reach their full potential. Classes are very specific, and most of the teachers truly care about the students. ECU's motto is Tomorrow starts here which means that your future starts when you attend ECU. It is true that the future starts when you attend ECU because everyone around you wants what is best for your and is pushing to help you be the best person you can be.

    Campus Safety

I always see a police car no matter where I go on campus and there are plenty of blue lights if I ever have an emergency. I think the ECU Safe Ride is also a very good addition to campus safety. Campus safety is very thorough.

    Greek Life

I'm not really into Greek life, but I know plenty of people that are and thoroughly enjoy it. I think it's a great opportunity for certain people, I just never really got into it.

    Clubs and Activities

Like I said earlier, there are so many clubs and activities around campus at all times. There;s something for everyone and I really think each person should at least try to get involved in something. It definitely adds to the college experience when you're involved.

Great for these types of students

There are plenty of things that are great for different types of people. There are religious groups for those that enjoy thriving in their religions. There are drama clubs for those that act. There are even gaming clubs for gamers. I could honestly go on and on because like I keep saying, there's something for everyone at ECU.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

One of my favorite things ever is getting out of class and seeing a crowd on the mall listening to Brother Ross preach. He is very popular on campus, but most students hate him. He preaches in a negative way and many people enjoy going to listen (and laugh) at some of the ridiculous things he says.

    Bang for the buck

College is so expensive, but ECU is one of the cheaper Universities in North Carolina so I think it's as good as it can get. It's not as expensive as other schools and it offers so much for the students. I think it's worth it.

    What to do for fun

There are so many clubs to join for almost any interest you can ever imagine. Many of those clubs throw events all over campus, so there's almost always something going on that you can go to. The school offers various religious groups as well for people to join. There's honestly something for everyone.

    Food and Dining

Campus dining is a lot better than I expected going into college at the beginning. There is a great amount of variety and I like the way ECU has their meals set up.

    Dorm Life

I have had good and bad experiences in my dorm so far. I enjoy dorm life because it's closer to everything on campus, therefore making it so much easier to be involved. However, they are slightly cramped and the process of changing roommates is so annoying that I never even bothered switching when I had a nightmare of a roommate.

    Academic Rigor

Of course, you have your few scary teachers but altogether I believe Ecu is thorough in educating their students in an effective way. I can admit to slacking off my freshman year, causing my GPA to fall, but with the help of wonderful professors at ECU and motivating myself, I am slowly bringing it back up. Every teacher I have had so far has been willing to help in any way possible as long as they see me making efforts.

    Tips for prospective students
