Categories Comments Tips for prospective students Don't hesitate to seek out advise from fellow upper class students and especially an academic advisor to help w/ your class selection towards what you are interested in majoring in. Also, know how many hours maximum you can take per semester and use them wisely in order to get your degree in 4 years.
Am enjoying being here As of now, I commute to school but have hopes of staying on campus next year. I have met people and become involved in intramurals and other on campus activities that have helped me feel a part of the school.
Am learning a lot I have learned a lot in the classes I have taken so far. I really learned a lot in my computer class and have enjoyed my teachers thus far. After taking sociology class, I decided to take more sociology in the future possibly making it a minor.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students ETSU is a great campus for anybody. It's a good size. It's close to EVERYTHING! Everyone there is so friendly and helpful. It really doesn't take long to get into the groove of ETSU. It'll feel like home in no time.
Tips for prospective students Some tips for students: Definitely take a tour of the campus. Try to get a feel for it before you decide that's where you want to live for the next 1 - 4 years. Ask questions! There's never a stupid question; and people are always eager to help you out!
Bang for the buck Compared to a LOT of colleges I was looking at, ETSU was definitely the cheapest. And I feel that I'm getting a wonderful education.
Am enjoying being here ETSU always has something going on! Our calender is loaded with events! There's something to do almost every single day. There's tons of restaurants and places to shop within ten minutes from campus. And the people are just great to be around!
Am learning a lot All the teachers I've had so far really take the time to help you out. Granted, you have to show you want help before you receive it. The teachers I've had make it fun and easy to learn whatever subject it is that they're teaching. I haven't had a single teacher that I haven't liked.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus police are always around.
Greek Life Frats hold plays, parties, and parking lot amusement. Always something going on with the Greeks.
Clubs and Activities Every club you can think of. My roommate leads the quidditch club.
Great for these types of students If you want a little space. There is lots of room around campus and classes are flexible and varied.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Everyone studies. Weird.
Bang for the buck Living in Tennessee it was really affordable for me. In a great location mid-town with lots of options on campus or off.
What to do for fun Clubs every hour, always someone to hang out with.
Food and Dining There's Chick-fil-A and Chinese in the lobby. Damn good.
Dorm Life The guy having sex upstairs has bad rhythm .
Academic Rigor Every teacher has busted their bum for me. I appreciate that.
Tips for prospective students Get your financial aid forms, pell grant, etc taken care of as soon as possible. They lost my discount form 6 times in a row.
In three sentences Easy, breezy, walks to class. Pretty girls abundant. Financial aid office loses all your papers.

Categories Comments Campus Safety This campus is one of the safest that I have seen, there are emergency buttons spread throughout the campus. Usually you won't get out of range of one of these lights, if you are in trouble you can press one of the buttons and help will be there swiftly. In major threat cases the school can be locked down in less than five minutes. As an added bonus if you are studying late at the library you can call campus police for them to drive you to your dorm or car. I gave safety 4 stars because no matter how safe anything is it cannot be perfect.
What to do for fun There is plenty to do for fun around ETSU. They have a variety of intramural sports and if they don't have something you are interested in you can always get a group together to request it. There are plenty of things within ten minutes of the school; including a mall, a movie theater. and a variety clubs that many of the students frequent.
Food and Dining They have a pretty extensive food court in the dining area; includes a buffet and many other varieties of food to maximize students options. Anyone who doesn't like the taste of campus food can always leave and be at a restaurant in less than ten minutes since a lot of the town is centered around the school.
Dorm Life Here you get to interact with many different students in their natural environment; it is a great way to make new friends.
Academic Rigor As stated previously some of the classes can be pretty difficult, however they are also beneficial.
Tips for prospective students I messed up my first year and stopped going to classes about halfway through both semesters. I got tired of going to class because I lived a good distance away and signed up for all days of the week, So I would recommend that anyone planning on going here plan their classes to fit their schedule, and to look up professor's before taking their classes. Also something that would have been incredibly useful for me, do not be afraid to drop your classes. If someone would have told me it wouldn't affect my GPA and simply informed me of this option I would have been much better off.
In three sentences This will be my third year at ETSU and I have enjoyed it thoroughly and would recommend it. The campus life is fantastic with many events taking place throughout the school year, and it is also a smoke free campus. The classes here can be challenging, however you will come across a lot of useful information once you delve in deeper.

Categories Comments Tips for prospective students Make sure that you get your paper work on time and try to get it in way before the due date. Don't pick the first college you look at. Make sure that you are going to love the place and not hate being there for so long. You need to look at more than one school so you will know what you can pick from. Look at things that are around the school and things will be able to do around the area.
Bang for the buck I think that i am paying the money for the teachers to teach and mine are doing a good job at teaching. They are making sure that i understand everything and they are working with me to understand and be able to pass.
Am enjoying being here I am glad that i moved from UTC to ETSU this year. I am so happy about being here and about making the friends i have at this school. I will never forget the people or the school.
Am learning a lot I love my teachers. I have learned a lot from the teachers and the students. The teachers are very helpful and willing to work with you.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students If your an outdoor person who likes hiking, biking, kayaking in the summer time. While skiing, snowboarding, and tobogganing in the winter time. You will definitively enjoy this place
Tips for prospective students Visit the school before making a final decision. Look at your major and see if it fits well with the school curriculum. School has a good nursing school and blue grass program. Yeah Kenny Chesney attend this school and was part of the blue grass program.
Bang for the buck Paying out of state tuition is pretty high and increasing but for the price is decent for the local students compared to other state schools. Different types of scholarship are available so apply early.
Am enjoying being here Well there is a place for everyone, if you enjoy the small local community town feel with a touch of southern hospitality then this is the place for you. Their different school clubs to join and many different campus ministries.
Am learning a lot Teachers are really great and not only do they teach from the book but also include personal knowledge into textual learning. Most teachers are interesting and helpful with any extra assistance needed

Categories Comments Bang for the buck ETSU has the cheapest tuition of all the schools I researched, and the level of education you receive definitely exceeds the cost.
Am enjoying being here Although ETSU is too close for comfort to the middle of the city for me (I'm a steep mountains and flowing rivers gal!), I enjoy walking through campus and hearing the clock tower chime ever hour or so. It's a charming place.
Am learning a lot I'm a biology major, and I currently have so many general education requirements that I haven't been able to take strictly biology related classes. I have a feeling the first year or two will simply be an in-depth review of what I learned at high school.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Do not have any fun. Do your studies and visit your closest family and true friends.
Food and Dining ETSU has a all you can eat buffet style cafeteria, and a Quiznos restaurant.
Dorm Life I do not live in the dorm, but i would give the same advice that I did under academic rigor.
Academic Rigor School and studying all the time sucks, but stay in school, and do your best. Stay away from women or men, which ever you date, and stay focused on school. Also, stay away from people who will drive you off your intended path.
Tips for prospective students Always check Ratemyprofessor.com and if more than one student is saying the same then there is possibly some truth to the matter, but always meet the professor before making up your mind or scheduling your classes. Interview all of your professors before you choose your classes, professors, and your school schedule.
In three sentences ETSU is an excellent school, and they have very good programs and professors. ETSU has many opportunities for the serious student, and ETSU is a very good stepping stone to the next level.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you like sports, great place for you.If nature is your thing, great place for you.If you like to party, great place for you! (Yes,we party, but its not thrown in your face like most colleges) If you are chill like me,this place is laid back without a question. If you wanna meet new people, awesome place for you. Everyone is happy for the most part, and you are sure to find your niche. Greek life is very active here,so if Goin Greek is your thing, then it is highly recommended that you check it out. To close, believe me when i tell you, you will love this school!
Tips for prospective students Bring athletic gear. This campus loves to be active so a couple pairs of shorts, tennis shoes, and maybe some cleats will be beneficial.Bring a car or some for of transportation. The campus is kind of secluded,in that all the restaurants, malls, and other stores are located off campus, which makes it hard if you REALLY want a white chocolate molten cake from chili's. Lastly bring yourself. This school is great, and the people here are great as well.
Bang for the buck Definitely the best school to be at if you come from a middle class family. Nearly everyone here gets some financial of some kind, although the financial aide process is tiresome and sometimes frustrating, double checking your information and the forms you submit will make the process much smoother. And for god sakes, check and make all your deadlines for financial aid and scholarships,or you will regret it!
Am enjoying being here One of the main reasons i decided on this school,is that it is literally one of the most beautiful campuses I've seen...if you like trees and grass. I'm just not a concrete person.
Am learning a lot When you first get here,it's a little overwhelming if you aren't from around the area.Classes are tough to find the first day, but when is it ever easy? After a week on campus things roll quite smoothly, and by now you have several friends and things to do. There are tons of things to do on and off campus..its just a matter of getting out of your dorm or house and doing it! Class is not too crazy, the biggest lecture hall i have been in was around 150 people, which is not that much considering most colleges cram you in a room double or triple that size. The classes sizes make it easy to have one on one time during class,or to ask questions.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Great college for any student of any age, race, or sex. Has a great variety of people and a great culture mix.
Tips for prospective students Look for activities to get involved with! This college has a lot of activities that appeals to your every need! Plus this helps you get to know people of every race, age, and sex. Make sure to relax and enjoy your time at college. Study and study hard but also take time to smell the roses as people say! It is very overwhelming starting college, especially if its your first time away from parents, family, and friends, but I promise everyone will help you get through it here. Everyone understands the struggles that a college student faces and they make sure to work around them and get through them!
Bang for the buck Is one of the best colleges I have ever been to. Wonderful faculty and staff, beautiful landscape, and much more! If one is to come to ETSU, it will definitely be a time that one will enjoy.
Am enjoying being here There are many activities that one can find on campus. There is also almost any club you can think of here. Again if not than they offer to where you can create your own. You can create how busy you want to be or how laid back your day is. You can play a pick up game in the gym or just read a book under a shade tree.
Am learning a lot Is a great college for anyone of any age. All professors are very understanding to the busy ways of life, and are very willing to help you in any way you feel you need help. But not only do the professors help you many of the students are willing to help you. Anything that you what to learn, even if its not a class, you can pretty much find someone to teach it to you. And if it does not offer what you want, it is very easy to begin your own club.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students ETSU has almost every possible major so just pick the one that fits you and go for it. I think that every type of student has a place at the university.
Tips for prospective students This is a very good school. Don’t park your car backwards you will get a ticket. What I would suggest is if you are looking for a bachelors in Biomedical engineering or electronics it would be worth your time looking elsewhere. As for other programs I cannot say. I know people who have been in the art/film department who have been more than pleased. The same goes with math. From what I can tell the school is not a party school so you should be able to study just fine. The library is wonderful and the computer labs are equipped with all the software that you need.
Bang for the buck I attended a community college for 2 years and that is what I will compare my education at ETSU to. I am at ETSU for the biomedical engineering program. The quality of instruction at ETSU is varying. Some instructors are very concerned about your learning and others dont care at all. I would say that the education value is a little lacking based on the price of attending. Classes that I found to be very productive were calculus, and trigonometry, anatomy and physiology. Classes that were lacking in instructional value were some of the more biomed/electronics specific. The instructors were older overweight men that only cared about their projects and the paycheck.
Am enjoying being here There are many groups to join and there are always things going on. If you are into sword fighting then you can find that, if you are into underwater basket weaving then you can find that too. If you like watching movies with lots of people or if you want to go to the gym and work out. There is never a time that you should be bored.
Am learning a lot Many of the general classes are large and every student is known as a seat row and number. Once you move out of these general classes though the one on one instruction is better. I feel that I have learned a good bit but not as much as I did in the community college setting.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Great for anyone whether you are from a big city of a small town, you can easily make friends and have fun.
Tips for prospective students My advice is when you have to go some where try to get there early. Also if you love to give others advice, apply to be a RA in the Upward Bound program.
Bang for the buck The tuition price is good. Also the doom rooms are amazing. My favorite to stay in is Centennial Hall. I liked Lucy and West if you want to stay in a historic dormitory.
Will enjoy being here I love being on campus. Everything is near you if you need anything.
Will learn a lot I am in a program that allows me to stay on campus during the summer and I have a BLAST! I learn new things all of the time. I learn shortcuts that will allow you to get to class sooner and quicker.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Students who understand that they need to not only take what is given to them, but work and research outside of class to broaden their prospects. You don't come here to sit quietly for four years and get a piece of paper. Get involved.
Tips for prospective students MILK IT FOR WHAT IT IS WORTH!!! You might pay thousands more to receive access to the tools and people who have experienced things in your field elsewhere. The people are knowledgeable, so you need to ask questions and get involved! You need to get involved... literally the first day, you need to hit the ground running. Don't come in and expect to sit quietly in the corner and learn something. Many students come in and sit quietly and say nothing their first day... The experience may be jarring, but you need to go for it. Learn by doing!
Bang for the buck I reiterate: I can definitely say that it helps to have teachers that still work in their respective fields. This is important because what you study may become obsolete in four years time, so you need to keep up with what is current in your field to not only remain employable, but sane. Definitely a deal. I'd have to pay a lot more if I were attending elsewhere to gain access to these tools and to people who have experienced what it is like to work in the field I am interested in.
Am enjoying being here This may be biased because my world is theatre, but there is a lot going on in the area and not just on campus. There are groups and student-run organizations that put on productions and reach out to members of the community to get involved. It is common to find a mixed group in a production: some people that don't attend ETSU, some students, some actors... varying ages sometimes 18 to 62. This applies to everyone interested in attending ETSU, not just theatre majors: The involvement is great! But that is just it, you need to be involved. Don't come in your freshman year and expect to sit quietly in the corner and learn something. Learn by doing!
Am learning a lot As a theatre major, I can definitely say that it helps to have teachers that still work in their respective fields. This is important because what you study may become obsolete in four years time, so you need to keep up with what is current in your field to not only remain employable, but sane. Unlike other schools where teachers just hammer in material that was taught to them, the teachers at East Tennessee State University are still working outside the realm of education. Dr. Delbert Hall teaches rigging and he still designs and hangs fly systems for regional theatres. The Director of the theatre program at ETSU, Patrick Cronin, teaches acting for the camera and offers advice to students seeking careers in film and theatre. Some of his work involves: Star Trek: The Next Generation, Mad About You, Sabrina: The Teenage Witch... look him up. Melissa Shafer and Karen Brewster still do costuming and scene and set for professional opera and the Barter Theatre. These teachers know what the industry was like years ago and they know what it is like currently. They will be able to prepare you for the real world.

Categories Comments Campus Safety you will get hit by a car on this campus as i have and then the hospital that they take you to up here is worse than useless, they almost killed me. if you are accident prone, the hospitals will not help your case.
Greek Life the frats are pretty big here but there are only a few along with the sororities.
Clubs and Activities several clubs affiliated with the school and intramurals are really big here.
Great for these types of students quiet students who do not mind not having a nightlife.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus one of the dorm houses is apparently haunted.
Bang for the buck good not great, i could have done better.
What to do for fun the mall and some bars.
Food and Dining the main cafeteria is awful but there are several places on campus with good food like chik-fil-a.
Dorm Life not much to do. too strict while living in a dorm. only plus is convenience.
Academic Rigor prerequisites are easy however, the sciences are extremely difficult here.
Tips for prospective students consider how much partying you want to do. another school may be a better choice. if you do not like the cold, stay far away.
In three sentences average school with beautiful view. campus life is dismal at best. there are several things to do during the day but the city quiets down at night.

Categories Comments Food and Dining the meal-plans at etsu, if living on campus, only allow the use of one meal per a pre-allotted time frame for each of three meals a day. this causes problems for students whose dining habits do not directly correspond with each meals time frame. however, the food selections and opportunities across and around campus make up for the poor time allotment.
Dorm Life dorm life at etsu allows for students who wish to isolate themselves to do so at their will, but the dorms also provide opportunities to meet a lot of new people and make plenty of new friends and study groups.
Academic Rigor the academic standards allow for a knowledge-filled experience without causing an enormous amount of stress. however, students will need to keep up with deadlines and schedules provided by the school and their professors to prevent procrastination and a build-up of work that may create a slightly stressful experience.
In three sentences east tennessee state is a superb university nestled in the uniquely historic and loving community that fills johnson city. the university has a wide variety of degree programs to provide its services to a diverse student body. life as a student at etsu is both fulfilling and satisfying, and attending this university has allowed many students to take their first steps toward life-long career goals.

Greek Life They have their ups and downs. All of them are on academic probation right now.
Clubs and Activities Everything but football.
Great for these types of students To the commuter students, good luck with parking.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Bible study groups are all over campus. If that isn't you group of people, the inter-murals get pretty hot during the summers!
Bang for the buck Come to school with a friend and request to live with them!!
What to do for fun There is a three dollar movie around, skating, a few clubs and bars. There is also $1 bowling night at one of our bowling alleys.
Food and Dining The food on campus is AWFUL!!! You have to go to a corporate owned food company to get any good food on campus.
Dorm Life I loved dorm life. Governors and Lucy are the only halls I lived in. The on campus apartments are where I reside now and they have a lot less rules!
Academic Rigor The academics here are harder in classes with older teachers. Also classes within your major are harder than Gen Ed classes.
Tips for prospective students Don't come to college your freshman year and take classes in a major. Wait a semester or two an take the general education classes.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are campus police patrolling around the clock, and the campus is well lighted at night.
Great for these types of students Quillen College of medicine is great for prospective med students, and ETSU offers a great BS nursing program.
What to do for fun If you are a outdoors person who likes hiking, river rafting, camping, and fishing, you are in luck! Located at the foot of the Appalachian mountains we are never far from numerous outdoor activities.
Food and Dining There are many dining choices on campus from snack vendors, fast food to all you can eat dinning room eating. There is other eating opportunities within walking distance, and a natural/organic grocery also within walking distance.
Dorm Life I live in the area and do not live in the dorms. But I am told there is a variety of choices from shared dorms to apartments.
Academic Rigor I have found the academic rigor can vary a lot from class to class. Some have been very easy and laid back, and some have been very demanding, stressful, and difficult.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you hook up with all student help services that are available on campus. There is never a need to wander around clueless, there are too many student help services. Parking is a weak point at ETSU, but they make up for it with transportation shuttles called the Buc shot that has several stopping points around campus.
In three sentences ETSU is constantly improving, currently a new baseball field is under construction. The only bachelors Bluegrass program in the nation calls ETSU it's home. Overall ETSU is a great school to attend.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I have never once felt unsafe on campus. There are emergency posts with phones to call campus safety all around campus that are easily accessible. If you ever have to walk back to your dorm or car by yourself you can call campus safety to have them escort you to where you need to go.
Greek Life Greek Life is amazing! It got me involved with the whole campus. I always knew what was going on at the school. I made tons of friends. It is a great experience for anyone, especially someone that is just entering the school. It helps a lot to get settled in so that you can get used to being away from home sooner!
Clubs and Activities There are clubs for almost any type of person there. I was personally involved in Greek life, and we got together with some of the other clubs to raise money for cancer and also to beautify the campus. Some of the clubs hold weekly activities that anyone can attend such as movies, games, cookouts, and fairs with free stuff!
Great for these types of students It is great for students interested in majoring in business or in the medical field. The majority of the classes attain to those majors. The clubs that are on the campus appeal to all types of people though. So any type of student that is interested in those majors would fit in great!
What to do for fun Every Friday one of the clubs shows recently released movies in the auditorium on campus. There are also two big concerts a year, a comedian and a band! There are dance classes in the gym a couple times a week. All of these things are free for students!
Food and Dining The food is not that great. There is a buffet style cafeteria, but the food doesn't have much taste. It also always seems like they are serving leftovers. There is another place on campus that has fast food type restaurants. There is a sub shop, a burger shop, a place with Mexican style food, coffee shop, and also a chicken place. The food there is good, but it is really expensive.
Dorm Life The dorms great! They are all in a convenient location to all of the academic buildings, and also the building that has all the food. They are very safe; only the people who live in the dorms have access to the buildings. The staff in the dorm buildings are very helpful and always reachable for assistance.
Academic Rigor The classes were not too hard. Most of the teachers were easy to learn from and understand. Some of the classes were really challenging, but they were the classes that you would expect to be really hard.
In three sentences The campus is absolutely beautiful and has a very homey feel to it. They have a regular four year school, and also a graduate school for pharmacy and a medical school. There is a lot of diversity on campus so it is easy to fit in and feel accepted.

Categories Comments Campus Safety This campus is very safe. Huge efforts have been made by the staff to better the safety on campus and it shows. There have been few incidents in which the staff have completely handled in a very professional manner. There are emergency help towers scattered throughout campus in case of an emergency. From one tower, you can see the next tower. This is campus, in my opinion, is very safe.
Greek Life Greek Life is very popular on campus. There are 4 sororities and 6 fraternities on campus. All of which do many service and social activities that are open to all students. If you are not a part of Greek Life it is easily overlooked, but being a part of it you experience a lot of opportunities that other students do not. All the Greek organizations focus on scholarship and philanthropic service.
Clubs and Activities There are over 200 student organizations and clubs on campus. For what ever hobby or interest you have, there is a club.
Great for these types of students Small town oriented students would love ETSU because of it's small campus. ETSU is very accepting of all types of students; there is no discrimination what so ever.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus On campus in the Culp Center is an area of study/hanging out called the cave. In this area, the atmosphere is as if you are literally in a cave. There are actual rocks inside this area and it is super cool! Also, every semester before finals week, there is a midnight pancake breakfast for all students.
Bang for the buck For the money that you pay in tuition and other expenses, you are getting the best bang for your buck. ETSU offers great education at a low cost. I am an out-of-state student and my out-of-state fees were waved through scholarship and this has helped my family tremendously. A lot of institutions do not offer the waving of out-of-state fees. This is an excellent choice of University that is easy on your wallet.
What to do for fun For fun, I would suggest joining an organization whether it be Greek, academic, or social. These make for better weekends at ETSU. There is not a lot of activities offered, but this is changing within the next year. There is a group called Buctainment who organizes movie showings on Fridays and other lectures/speaker presentations on campus.
Food and Dining The Dining Hall is mediocre, but it is food and it has it's days where it is good. There is also Chik-fila, Quiznos, Asian cuisine, a burger place, and a southwest choice in the Atrium of the Culp Center. You can also have ID Bucs which is accepted at many surrounding off-campus dining choices.
Dorm Life Depending on the dorm, dorm life is good, but not excellent. Housing is hard to deal with and there are extreme consequences for minor mistakes if you are written up. I would suggest Carter Hall for girls because it is clean and centrally located.
Academic Rigor General Education classes are do-able. You can manage to make an A with little effort. Once you get into major oriented classes, you are challenged as a student and if you do not make appropriate contacts with teachers or appropriate study habits, you will fall behind. Falling behind will hurt you and your GPA.
Tips for prospective students This school is great if you are looking for a small campus, one-on-one help from teachers, and a wide variety of majors. As long as you work hard and attend class, life is very easy at East Tennessee State University.
In three sentences East Tennessee State University is such a safe, pretty campus. It is so easy to find classes around campus and the teachers are very helpful in all aspects of your education. This University has allowed me to grow tremendously as a student and as a person in a positive manner.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are always campus police patrolling and keeping an eye on things. There are also emergency stands all around campus and in all of the parking lots to provide a way for anyone being threatened to call for help and police. The parking lots are well-lit and I feel comfortable attending late night study at the library.
Greek Life I am not personally part of Greek Life, but many of my friends and peers love it and say it is a great experience.
Clubs and Activities There are always activites going out. From outdoor hiking clubs, to group snowboarding trips, to fashion shows and bake sales, there is something available to join, and be a part of.
Great for these types of students Students interested in getting a good education, with many opportunities, but like the smaller classroom settings and southern hospitality.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is a nature/ hiking trail on campus. Not to mention, the entire city is surrounded by beautiful mountains. The newest edition to ETSU campus is the disk golf course they added this past 2011-2012 school year.
Bang for the buck I think ETSU is a great size campus, with awesome resources.
What to do for fun There are always intramural sports and event, and sororities and fraternities as well. ETSU always provides interesting guest speakers too. We always have a Fall semester concert, that the students get to vote on, so that's a big hit. If you like to work out, there is a great facility on campus that provides swimming, rock climbing, basketball, volleyball, racket ball, ping pong, and much much more. There are also weekly work out classes like Butts Gutts and Thighs and Girls Night Out that really make exercising fun. If you want to learn salsa dancing, or thai kwon do, those classes are available too!
Food and Dining I think the campus offers good food choices. There is an einstein bagel shop in the library, and at the snack bar. There is also chick-fil-a and other places to eat. In the dorms, there is a convenient store as well.
Dorm Life I have never lived in a dorm at ETSU, but have had many friends who have. No one has ever really said bad things, especially about the newer dorms. The old ones, I've heard, can be a little scary though- especially in the shared bathrooms. BUT hey- it's college!
Academic Rigor I feel that professors are always willing to help students reach their full potentials. I also think that the students at ETSU are, for the most part, enthusiastic and thirsty for knowledge.
Tips for prospective students Find your classrooms BEFORE the first day, and always stay on top of financial aid and student requirements for new terms, they'll sneak up on you! Also, make sure you always have a parking permit sticker for wherever you are parking, because you WILL get a ticket, even if you're only parked there for 20 minutes.
In three sentences ETSU is overall a great school. The atmosphere is nice and classy and classroom size is manageable. There are many smiling faces and professors are almost always more than willing to help students not only learn, but understand.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students The university may be easy to get into, but students should be diligent in studying so they can continue attending
Bang for the buck Regionally this is a popular institution offering unique programs such as Blue Grass and Storytelling.
What to do for fun The area offers several festivals, clubs, and restaurants. The area is small, so some travel may be required
Tips for prospective students File your financial aid EARLY, and don't wait until the last minute to do anything for school
In three sentences ETSU is in a beautiful area. The History department contains well-qualified and excellent staff/faculty. Financial Aid is very helpful

Categories Comments Greek Life I, personally, am a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. The Greek life options (all sororities and fraternities and the philanthropies and activities each are involved in as well as the organizations themselves) are phenomenal.
Bang for the buck This school is extremely affordable (especially if you are a Tennessee resident), and, as I have already stated, it has excellent academic options.
What to do for fun Knoxville is only an hour and a half away! Plus, Johnson City has plenty of shopping and fun activity options as well.
Tips for prospective students The college of nursing is renowned across the country. Also, most all medical programs are well know and graduates are quite successful. There are several other exceptional programs for other career fields.
In three sentences East Tennessee State University is a great school. It is not too big, but it is also not too small. The academic opportunities are bountiful in several different fields.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I have never felt unsafe while on the ETSU campus. There are campus police officers throughout the campus day and night. These officers will even escort you to classes at night if you don't want to be alone. There are text alerts in case of emergencies. Throughout the campus, there are emergency buttons that will call campus safety and the Johnson City police department if you find yourself in an emergency. However, they have not been used while I've been attending school there.
Greek Life ETSU has a huge Greek life. The majority of students are involved in some sort of fraternity or sorority. Every semester, Greek rush is a huge event. However, it's nothing like you see in the movies: there are no crazy parties going on. But if it's not your thing, you won't feel like you're missing out on anything.
Clubs and Activities ETSU has a Quidditch team, every kind of sport you can imagine, and a free gym. If you don't care for sports, there are clubs for everything. And even if you can't find the club that meets your interest, you can start one yourself and make it an official club by signing up for it in the main office!
Great for these types of students I've seen every type of student on campus: traditional students, adults, grad students, etc. But Pre-Med students at ETSU have some of the best opportunities. ETSU has the highest acceptance rate into medical schools than any other college in the state. They have two advisors to help them, as well as exclusive opportunities for hospital internships and medical research studies.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus ETSU has gotten awards for its beautiful campus and is even considered to be a state arboretum. There is a gorgeous bell tower in the center of campus that is the focal point. There are also several fountains, gardens, and artistic statues throughout the campus.
Bang for the buck I firmly believe that ETSU provides a great education. I live in a great dorm and have challenging classes, helpful professors, and help with finding a job after graduation. I didn't think I would like being on such a small campus, but now I don't want to go anywhere else.
What to do for fun Johnson City is a beautiful town with both old and new places. There are antique stores, a movie theatre, a shopping mall, and countless restaurants. The university also provides free entertainment on the weekends such as movie showings and a concert in the spring. Last year's concert featured Lifehouse, The Ready Set, and Breathe Carolina.
Food and Dining There are a few dining options on campus. The cafeteria is all-you-can-eat buffet style. There are also some on-campus restaurants such as Chick-fil-A and Quiznos. The only problem I've had with the dining experience is the inconvenient hours.
Dorm Life ETSU has some of the nicest dorms I have seen on a college campus, depending on which dorm you choose. There are several options, such as the traditional dorm room or student apartments. You can choose a co-ed dorm or a gender-specific dorm, depending on your preference.
Academic Rigor From my experience, the classes were just as difficult as the ones my friends were taking at other universities. However, since the university is smaller, there are many more opportunities to speak with your professor for help. There is also free tutoring provided by the university.
Tips for prospective students Go to class. Just because ETSU is not as selective does not mean that the classes are less difficult.
In three sentences ETSU is like a miniature UT. If you want to go to UT but can't afford it or if you prefer something smaller, I would suggest ETSU. It costs about half as much for the same education.

Categories Comments Campus Safety ETSU makes every effort to insure their students safety. As you walk through the campus, you'll see many red poles with blue lights on top. They each have a button to push in case of an emergency. There are also sirens that will go off to alert you off a tornado warning and give you instructions on what to do to keep safe. In the event of a tornado or other emergency on campus, everyone will receive an email with a description of the emergency and instructions. My favorite safety feature is Gold Alert. You can sign up online and they send you text alerts.
Greek Life There are several different sororities and fraternities to choose from including a co-ed honors fraternity. They are all extremely friendly and you often see them set up booths to recruit new members.
Clubs and Activities You can find a club for just about anything that you are interested in.
Great for these types of students Great for students who are nature lovers. So many trees, flowers, squirrels, and bunnies on campus. There are also many walking and hiking trails nearby.
Bang for the buck ETSU is a lot less expensive than others schools but has so many great things to offer.
What to do for fun Get involved in campus life! Join Greek life, one of the many clubs and organizations, go to a sports event (basketball, baseball, soccer), attend a concert (like last year's spring concert with Lifehouse, The Ready Set, and Breathe Carolina), go to the CPA (the school's massive gym free to all students), or play intramural sports.
Food and Dining There are so many dining options available on campus. Basically, any type of food you're in the mood for can be found in the Culp Center.
Dorm Life I definitely recommend living on campus. Each dorm has its own activities and events as well as collaborating with other residence halls to plan events and competitions that help you meet new people.
Academic Rigor The courses are challenging, but the instructors are very dedicated to your learning and understanding and want to make the material as interesting as possible.
Tips for prospective students Live on campus and get involved.
In three sentences The campus is beautiful. The staff is extremely helpful. There are many majors, clubs, activities, and events to attend.

Food and Dining I havent experienced the food and dining yet, however - there are multiple restaurants everywhere near campus!
Dorm Life Greatest.Dorm.Life.Ever.
Academic Rigor Love the classes. I'm only a sophomore at the moment so I havent been in the major related classes, but I love them so far!
Tips for prospective students Just try to get all your stuff turned in as early as possible.

Food and Dining Campus food is not great but there are plenty of options off campus.
Dorm Life Met my best friend in freshmen dorm. Average community and there is a variety of friends available.
Academic Rigor Classes are average 30 or below students except for general ed courses. Most teachers are willing to give second chances. Strict plagiarism consequences.
Tips for prospective students Great school for pre-med students. Great mountain location with not harsh winters and cool summers. Great student to teacher ratio.

What to do for fun Join some type of club or go to basketball games!
Dorm Life I have not experienced dorm life.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Those who love nature, and who don't party as much. It's definitely not a party school.
Bang for the buck A lot less expensive than a lot of the bigger schools and it's more quaint. If you are looking for a big city feel, this might not be the place for you. But if you enjoy nature you might want to look into this school.
What to do for fun There are a lot lakes, and mountains to do the outdoors thing. And there are some clubs near campus.
Food and Dining They have a lot of places to eat on campus, if you can't find it there then it is rather easy to go off campus to get food. Once again, there are shuttles to take you to several places in Johnson City.
Dorm Life I'm not too familiar with this aspect. I didn't live in a dorm. But they are close to all of your classes.
Academic Rigor The academic rigor can be grueling, but this is college. I would be more concerned if it wasn't hard. The professor's are fair. Which is what I would want. They aren't easy, but they are fair.
Tips for prospective students The classes are fairly easy to find, and here lately they hare a lot easier to register for them. My only advice is to get to class early the first few weeks, parking can be tough but there are plenty of spaces, and they have shuttles that are pretty good at getting to the destination on time.
In three sentences ETSU is located in the beautiful Appalachian mountains so the backdrop for the school is stunning. The courses are small so you can get better acquainted with the professors.

Categories Comments Clubs and Activities There are so many clubs and activities for students! It's unbelievable.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Cave is a fun kind of hang out/study place for the students. (which is where the Starbucks is located!!!)
Bang for the buck Being an in-state student my tuition including my dorm and fees is a little over five thousand, which, compared to the other schools I was considering, is so much cheaper. You get the same things, if not more, as other schools in the area. It is a great school with spectacular academics and opportunities.
What to do for fun There is always something going on at ETSU. ALWAYS. There are sports, movie nights, study groups, parties, socials, and random people hanging out. I guarantee that you will have no problem finding things to do here!
Food and Dining Honestly, I do not advise you to purchase a meal plan if you have other ways to get food. (microwave or kitchen in dorm) They are unbelievably expensive and the food just isn't that good. There are places such as Quiznos, Starbucks, and Chick-Fil-A in the Culp Center that are great places. I give it five stars just because they have other options for students.
Dorm Life Two words. SO. FUN!!! I have to say the dorms without the A/C have more fun than any of the others. Since you have no A/C, the doors on your hall are almost always open and it's sooooo super easy to make new friends that way. There is always some kind of movie night or game night going on in the commons, due to the fact that no one wants to be in a stuffy , hot dorm. It promotes socializing. Also, dorm life allows you to interact more with others and get involved in things on campus you normally wouldn't if you lived at home. It's wonderful, and I definitely encourage you to live on campus!!!
Academic Rigor The classes are not that difficult if you just take time out of your schedule everyday to study. An hour or so everyday helps more than you will even imagine.
Tips for prospective students I would encourage prospective students to: -Apply EARLY! -Once accepted, apply for housing (if living on campus) ASAP! I waited until the very last minute, and am stuck in the only dorm for women that has no A/C. -Take a tour of the campus -Talk with your advisor about which classes would be best suited for your first year, or classes that are required. -If living on campus, tour the dorms!!! You definitely don't want to be stuck somewhere you hate and be miserable for an entire year. -Think about doing PREVIEW. Awesome program. -Look into the clubs and sports..etc.. that they have available. I was actually surprised at how many they had!
In three sentences East Tennessee State University is a university full of people who care about your future, and will help you achieve your goals. While there are a ton of students enrolled here, they still make you feel at home and very comfortable.

Dorm Life Didn't live in a dorm, but rating this was required by the asterisk.
Academic Rigor Depends on the teacher.
Tips for prospective students Familiarize yourself with a map of the campus. Get things done early to avoid lines. Parking is hardest to come by in the first couple of weeks, so arrive early, or pick classes later in the afternoon. A parking garage is being added (2012-ish), so parking may get better.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students This is a great school for students interested in obtaining their undergraduate degrees online. It's an accredited university with quality staff and a fine reputation.
Food and Dining According to the orientation presentation, the offerings for food and dining are plentiful and appealing, but I am an online student and have not personally experienced them.
Tips for prospective students Be prepared to be astounded! The online orientation was comprehensive without being redundant. The people I've had personal dealings with, particularly in Admissions and Academic Advising, have been nominated for Sainthood in my book. I can only assume that everyone there is just as wonderful and helpful.
In three sentences The academic advisor for the Allied Health Cardiopulmonary Science program is outstanding and her patience and sincerity encouraged me to stick with the process and even up my courses to full-time. Food and Dining I don't have a meal plan. But there is a Chick-Fil-A, Quizno's, Zoca, and Grille Works and they have good food. I heard that the food is good the first few weeks, then not so much!
Dorm Life I got to speak to my roommate via FB and its we connected. I stay at the West Dorm and there is not air conditioning(which sucks). But the other dorms are way better. So unless your parents are cheap, don't choose West Dorm.
Academic Rigor It varies on professor.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus police are constantly patrolling the area as well as the Emergency Response Systems located all around campus in case you need to quickly get a whole of Public Safety! I guarantee you will feel safe while on ETSU campus.
Greek Life ETSU has many different Sororities and Fraternities. They are constantly involved in the community and in various activities within their own sorority/fraternity.
Clubs and Activities ETSU offers just about any club that you can think of. If they do not have a club that you like, you can start up your own club with the help of a teacher and a couple students!
Great for these types of students Students who are hardworking individuals and who are willing to keep an open mind to new things.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The culp center is the place where most spend a lot of their time. Many clubs and organizations meet here, its where a lot of people have lunch and just hangout with friends. The campus itself is absolutely beautiful so some students choose to sit out at the picnic tables scattered around campus.
Bang for the buck ETSU tuition is not very high at all. Originally I expected the academics to not be as good as higher cost schools however I was proven wrong. I believe ETSU has some of the best teachers a student could have and will ultimately be the best place to prepare you for your life goals.
What to do for fun There are a wide range of clubs on campus that you can get involved in! Anything from quidditch, to Habitat for Humanity to Relay for Life, ETSU has it all. Also offered here is a huge gym that any student has access to.
Food and Dining ETSU offers a wide range of dining such as Chikfila, Grillworks, a mexican restaurant, as well as the ETSU dining. The food overall is pretty good as long as you get it early and not after its been sitting out for a while.
Dorm Life The dorms are very clean and the maintenance staff are relatively quick on getting to your needs. People are very friendly and they make you feel welcome.
Academic Rigor The classes at East Tennessee State University are very rigorous. Expect to spend a lot of your time studying!
Tips for prospective students I would recommend knowing very good study habits, the tests are application based and therefore fully understanding the knowledge of your assignments will be the ultimate key to success. Be aware that this school is very diverse, so some professors are hard to understand because of their nationality, however if you have an open mind and are willing to accept new things you will do fine.
In three sentences East Tennessee State University is a very welcoming college. All advisor s are there to help you in anyway that they can. The school is very diverse so you get a wide range of experiences at this university.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is very cautious. It almost seems as if they are trying to get someone in trouble, but it is just for safety.
Greek Life Above I talked about rushing. I haven't yet, but I plan too. They have four soroities to choose from.
Clubs and Activities I love the fraternities and sororities.
Great for these types of students All types of students are good for this school.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus I would say find something to do on campus.
Bang for the buck Definately take advantage of coupons.
What to do for fun It is a tri-cities town. So there is much to do you just have to go looking for it. They have a free recreation plan that all students can attend for free. They also take ski trips
Food and Dining The food it alright, but really expensive. I would say no meal plan.
Dorm Life The dorm life if fun if you are good at meeting people. I have met new people through my dorm though.
Academic Rigor The academics are tough, but they make you learn something. You have to study.
Tips for prospective students I would recommend a medical professions to go here. Visit the schools first and make your decision then
In three sentences ETSU is a very clean school. They have amazing teachers. Their meal plans are a big high though.

Greek Life Greek life is not your typical here we all talk to each other and all go to party's together

Bang for the buck You get your moneys worth for your education it's a little cheaper than some schools out there.
What to do for fun The dorms hold fun night to get people together and hang out for a couple of hours a week.
Food and Dining The food is good not you home cooked meal but still decently good.
Dorm Life I love my dorm life here. My roommates are awesome.
Academic Rigor They help you choose the right classes for you and your study.

Categories Comments Campus Safety ETSU is well lit and has several emergency kiosks scattered across the campus.
Great for these types of students ETSU has an excellent Computer Science program, so students like myself planning on majoring in C.S. should definitely consider ETSU. The faculty really know there stuff, and all of my C.S. classes so far have been fun and very informative.
Bang for the buck Not counting residence prices since I've only ever commuted, ETSU is a great deal. Budgeting your money and buying wisely from nearby stores can help keep food prices reasonable, and attending your classes everyday are two ways to really help you put your hard-earned money to good use. All of my classes so far have been quite informative and worth the money spent. Staying on campus and taking the transit buses can help save gas; alternatively, commuting from home is an excellent way to cut out residence prices if you already live nearby. The campus organizations, city environment, and Tennessee landscape all provide opportunities for fun.
What to do for fun You can hike the Appalachian Trail, go out for a night on the town, or join any of the campus's fraternities, sororities, or campus organizations. If Johnson City doesn't provide the fun you seek, then nearby Kingsport and Bristol (both around 30 minutes away) may be able to. Bristol is home to the famous Bristol Motor Speedway, which hosts several races throughout the year.
Food and Dining There are many options for eating at ETSU. If the buffet cafeteria on the top floor of the campus's central building, the various restaurants on the 2nd floor (Chik-Fil-A, Quiznos, Grille Works, Zoca), and the Einstein's Bagels locations on campus don't satisfy your appetite, then Johnson City's many restaurants will. As far as price goes, one of the best deals in town is Cici's Pizza's Monday night half-price college student special. Show up with your ID and you can get an all you can eat pizza, salad, and soup buffet and refillable drink for around $3.
Dorm Life I have always commuted from home, so I cannot completely describe dorm life. From what I've seen during the times I've hung out with friends at their dorms, each dorm provides a comfortable living environment, but the quality and the price of the dorm varies.
Academic Rigor Be prepared to write a lot, unless your major doesn't require it very much (like the Computer science program, which assigns mostly programming assignments rather than papers) and you avoid written intensive classes. You will have to have 4 written intensive classes and 2 oral intensive classes. 2 of the former must come from your major. Also, every student must take the same two English classes, both of which will involve writing. These could both be opted out of when I registered by using your ACT English score and your AP English test score (each score opts you out of one class).
Tips for prospective students Be prepared for much more diversity than high school in terms of religion, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. The library is a great place to study if you need somewhere quiet. A computer lab in the campus's central building provides both computers and quiet for getting done assignments. Lastly (and most importantly), if you want a good parking spot, get to school early (like between 7 and 8). Otherwise, your best bet is to park in a far out lot and walk.
In three sentences Reasonable class sizes (20-30 for most classes; in the 100s for big lecture class) help keep your education personal. Tennessee mountains and fresh air provide a great environment for outdoor recreation. An All-you-can-eat buffet, various campus restaurants, and the city of Johnson City provide many opportunities for good food, folks, and fun.

What to do for fun East Tennessee is a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. So much to do, so little time.
Academic Rigor It is fairly rigorous.
Tips for prospective students Do your own research for your major, and be prepared when you meet with your adviser to be able to know what you need and what you don't need.

Bang for the buck Big bang for the buck. I'm in state so it is outstanding for me.
What to do for fun Gaming, volleyball, campus movies
Food and Dining Plenty of choices on or off campus.
Dorm Life My dorm is like an apartment with a volleyball pit right outside. It's nice.
Academic Rigor Computer Engineering at ETSU is one of the most respected programs in the nation.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I have never once been fearful of my safety on campus. Campus police patrol daily, and there are stations for alerts if you are in dire need. I actually have not once had a campus alert sent to my phone this whole year.
Great for these types of students Great for students who love the mountains, and outdoors, as well as those who want a setting with smaller class sizes. Overall I would recommend anyone to at least come for a visit.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The biggest attraction is the Mini-Dome. You can't miss it. Has indoor tennis, track, and it is where basketball is played. Without a doubt the biggest structure in Johnson City
Bang for the buck Although school prices are on the rise as the years go by, I honestly do believe that for the Tution that you pay, ETSU is a diamond in the rough. It gets outshone by some larger institutions, but I do believe that this college is one to definitely appreciate.
What to do for fun The rock climbing center outside and the challenge course are extremely fun. Not to mention the Mountain biking course that is quite good as well as frisbee golf courses, a full workout center, a mall downtown, restaurants, and you are surrounded by mountains, so in the winter Skiing and Snowboarding are very popular. Plenty to do here!
Food and Dining Cafeteria food is ok. As it normally is anywhere. Usually I can find plenty to eat and be satisfied with the quality, but on any other day there is plenty to choose from with the vendors that are on campus. Also, ETSU is located very close to many restaurants.
Dorm Life Dorm life is very good. Resident Assistants are accomodating and friendly, and there are only a couple dorms that I would not want to live in. Newly constructed halls have large rooms that are more like an apartment then a dorm.
Academic Rigor Students are challenged and held to very high standards here, like they should be. Professors treat the students with respect, and overall they are extremely helpful if you ask for assistance. Class is challenging, and stimulating, but at the same time enjoyable because of the obvious care that the teachers have for the students.
Tips for prospective students Don't come to the school expecting the grandeur of a large billion dollar school. Although quaint, this university has history deep rooted in teaching, and is in the process of growing. New students are coming every day with good things to say about ETSU.
In three sentences East Tennessee State University is a school that is dedicated to it's students success. Although smaller than most schools, the faculty and staff work hard to help students excel. There are also a variety of nationally ranked graduate programs including Pharmacy, Medicine, and Physical Therapy.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Safety is good. You won't get your dorm broken into or anything stolen. the campus security is good and you can even sign up for mobile alerts so when something does go wrong they notify you right away.
Greek Life I'm personally not apart of the greek life. but people i know who are in it love it. they say they have a lot of fun with the other people in it and there is always something to do.
Clubs and Activities there are a ton of clubs you can get involved in. greek life, nation honor society, etc. there is a lot.
Great for these types of students the student who is serious about academics and getting their degree but also knows how to just hang out with friends and relax.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus the greek kids usually do something funny
Bang for the buck Food is set at a decent price, not to expensive but not super cheap. The book store is not to expensive, for something that costs a lot its usually cheaper.
What to do for fun A LOT! They have fraternities or sororities you can get involved with. They have intramural sports that a lot of different people play, and they constantly have concerts of someone is performing somewhere. it is never a dull moment on campus.
Food and Dining The food is good. The sometimes have food that is not the best but there is always a good selection of other things to eat. They have Chick-fil-a and Starbucks which are my two favorite places to eat.
Dorm Life The minute you walk into your dorm room you will make friends. Sometimes the roommate doesn't work out but thats ok because you will make friends throughout the dorm, people will always have something going on for you to do. Also kids have study groups if you are having trouble in classes.
Academic Rigor The classes will challenge you to think, but at the same time are not going to load you down with homework so you will be up all night. Studying however for tests needs to be taken seriously, those can be difficult at times.
Tips for prospective students It's OK if you don't know what you want to study, people will help you get on the right track. You will make friends within days after getting to campus. Finally the professors are some of the nicest people i know who will help you achieve your goal at getting your degree.
In three sentences ETSU has a great atmosphere to learn. There is always something to do when you are not in class. The Professors work with you when you need help.

Categories Comments Campus Safety ETSU makes sure campus safety is a number one priority. I feel they do a fantastic job with it.
Clubs and Activities There are numerous clubs and activities. Anyone can find something to join, which I suggest.
Great for these types of students If you like the city type are but not to busy ETSU is a great place to be. You always have something to do and many places to eat at.
What to do for fun I spend my time in the library studying, at the gym, or participating in some activity going on at that time.
Food and Dining I have only ate in the cafeteria once but when I did the food was pretty good.
Dorm Life There is always some activity going on or someone to talk to. Dorms are a great place to make new friends.
Academic Rigor I feel overall the academic rigor is very well laid out. The advisers are very helpful and knowledgeable.
Tips for prospective students Many of the professors give detailed examples. I would suggest always writing these examples down for the test and stay involved on campus. I feel living on campus provides more opportunities than commuting.
In three sentences ETSU is a beautiful, safe campus. The professors here are very helpful and try their best to make sure any help one needs they get.

Categories Comments Food and Dining There are a couple of good places to eat on campus but they are pretty expensive. The dining hall is not a place you want to go to eat. They food is sometime old and not worth the money.
Dorm Life Dorm life is pretty expensive, considering the apartments that are across the street from the school. They can be pretty far from classes and they can be awful to walk through.
Academic Rigor Some of the professors are really cool and their class is awesome to be apart of.
Tips for prospective students I suggest the rate my professor website. It is a list of the professors that past students took and wrote a compliment or a warning about.

Categories Comments Campus Safety ETSU's campus is very safe. The campus safety officers are always making rounds around the campus keeping an eye on things. The campus is well-lit and you feel safe walking at night. ETSU also has Emergency stands located throughout the campus that make it easy to get to if you were ever in an emergency and the safety police officers would be there really fast. ETSU also has an Alert System where they send a text message and email to you if an emergency ever came up. ETSU is very safe and the administration has done a great job at making it a safe campus.
Greek Life I'm not personally involved with the Greek Life on campus, but I know a lot of people who are, and they absolutely love it. They do have the parties, but they are always involved with the local community and doing community service projects around Johnson City and the Tri-City area. They experience a lot of different opportunities for those people who are involved that other students don't get to experience.
Clubs and Activities ETSU offers a wide variety of clubs and activities to get involved with. Intramural Sports is very popular among the students. There are Fraternities/Sororities and a lot of different organizations that have weekly activities to participate in. There are great campus ministries, volunteer/service organizations. There is a club or organization for everyone's interests. Just make sure you get involved with some sort of organization or club; it will make your college experience so much better.
Great for these types of students ETSU is the only University that offers a Blue-Grass Major. ETSU is also great for Math Majors, Art Majors, and Computer Science Majors. The Digital Media Department is highly ranked in the US. ETSU also has a very good Medical School, Nursing School, and Dental Hygiene School. ETSU offers a wide variety of majors and they are all very good. Also if you like outdoors, ETSU is the school for you, because there are many opportunities for outdoor adventures.
Bang for the buck If you are an In-State student, ETSU is one of the cheapest Universities in Tennessee, and you get a great education. If you are an Out-of-State student, ETSU is also one of the cheapest Universities in Tennessee, as well. You definitely get a great quality education at a reasonable price.
What to do for fun ETSU is located in the mountains so there is plenty of hiking, camping, kayaking and other outdoor activities you can do. There are also lots of restaurants, a movie theater, a mall and shopping center, bowling alleys, skating rink, and there are a few clubs and bars. Also in the winter time, there are some great skiing places you can go to that are between 45 minutes to an hour away. ETSU also has a concert once a semester that the students vote for. Maroon 5, One Republic, Carrie Underwood, Jordin Sparks, Eric Church, Little Big Town, and Josh Turner are some of the artists that have came to ETSU and the concerts are free to students.
Food and Dining The Marketplace (Cafeteria) has an all-you-can-eat buffet for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They have a wide variety of food and it's pretty good. If you don't want food from the Marketplace, there is a grocery store on campus where you can buy food from. There is also a Chick-fil-a, a Starbucks, a Mexican cuisine place, and an American cuisine place on campus and they are all very good.
Dorm Life The dorms are a great place to meet new people and make friends. All the dorms are reasonably priced. All the dorms are just a short walk to wherever your classes will be. Each dorm hosts several activities throughout the semester and they are a great way to meet people. I would highly recommend living on campus your first year, because it will help you meet people.
Academic Rigor Some classes are really easy, but a majority of classes require hard work and studying. All the classes that are offered, prepare you for your future, so they require the work and determination, but as long as you do your work and study, you will be fine. Don't hesitate to ask your teachers questions, because they are eager to help when you need it.
Tips for prospective students Get involved with student organizations and clubs on campus; they are great way to meet new people and make new friends. Don't hesitate to ask questions, because people are more than happy to help in any way they can. Make sure you take your classes seriously, but allow yourself to have some fun, too.
In three sentences ETSU is a great university to start and prepare for your future with the different opportunities and resources that are offered through the wide variety of majors and degrees. ETSU allows students to get involved through the different organizations and they are great ways to meet new people and make new friends. ETSU is a friendly atmosphere with teachers and administrators who care about your future and will help in any way they can.

Dorm Life The dorms all seem nice and inexpensive. Most of the other colleges I'm looking at have overpriced, small dorm rooms.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Don't walk alone at night. Last semester we had a few car break-ins.
Clubs and Activities Habitat for Humanity is a great club if you want to help the community. We build houses and raise money for local clubs or organizations.
Great for these types of students If you love to hike you will love Buffalo Mtn. You can see the campus from it as well as part of the city.
What to do for fun The mall is my favorite place to hang out on weekends!
Food and Dining The food is cafeteria food, some things are good but I got tired of it after the first month. But they have Quiznos , Chic-fil-a, Grill Works, and a Starbucks just opened last fall. I would reccommend only getting the 10 meals a week if you live on campus, because you get 200 advantage dollars and can use it at any ove the above locations as well as bucmart and treehouse.
Dorm Life I live in Lucille Clement and it is a great Residence Hall. Every other floor is a girl floor. This Hall is co-ed but you meet a lot of various people this way. It is pretty clean. Living in the newer dorms limits your ability to make friends because everything is so close to you. Living in Lucille allowed me to go to the gym right across my dorm everyday.
Academic Rigor Be aware of Biology for Majors 1110 with Dr. Wild. It is an intense course and would only reccommend it if you are willing to study every night for 3-5 hours.
Tips for prospective students If you live 3 or more hours away from ETSU consider other colleges. I myself am very independant and am transfering closer home. A friend of mine who went their the previous year was a home-body and transfered closer as well. My tip is to definately don't attend ETSU if you're looking to move away from home. Move here because you love the college.
In three sentences This is a great college for studies in the medicine field! All the professors work with you for the most part. I was very dissappointed with the campus life, mostly everyone goes home one weekends.

Categories Comments Campus Safety This campus has public safety phones located all over campus. Campus is well-illuminated at night. The campus also offers a service to escort people across campus at night if a student feels unsafe. I feel extremely safe on campus, however.
Greek Life There are several sororities and fraternities on campus, but I am not involved with any. Several of my friends are involved, however, and seem to enjoy it greatly.
Clubs and Activities There are plenty of places to get involved on campus! There are several clubs such as EcoNuts, FMLA, HEROES (the campus' Gay-Straight Alliance), and Quidditch.
Great for these types of students This campus is generally very liberal and takes care of its students. ETSU can be considered a suitcase school, but a lot of people stay on the weekends, too. It's kind of nice to be able to study on weekends without any real distractions. I have noticed that this school is very inclusive and everyone seems to get along. Also, the library is open until 2AM most nights, and has a small section open for after hours study after that time, so it's definitely nice for serious studiers.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus I guess some unusual traditions would be that some of the older dorms are believed to be haunted, and the existence of these ghosts is taken very seriously....
Bang for the buck ETSU definitely has some of the best prices around on tuition. Most of my classes are under 30 people, and so far I have had excellent instructors. I'm very excited about starting my second semester!
What to do for fun Personally, one of the best activities I have found to do is to go experience the nature that surrounds the campus. There are lots of hiking places and state parks near ETSU--not to mention, they're free. Most of the fun around here involves socialization with friends at the various clubs and restaurants, depending on your taste.
Food and Dining On campus food is around what you would expect, but there are a few franchise places on campus. While on campus isn't exactly something to brag about, Johnson City has just about every single restaurant you could possibly want, and most of the places around here give discounts or free things to students. If you like to eat, off campus will absolutely fulfill your needs.
Dorm Life This all of course depends on how picky you are about where you live. While ETSU has some really nice dorms (if you're willing to pay a little more), a dorm is simply a place to sleep and study; it's not really intended for much else than that, so don't get caught up in trying to entertain too much. The dorms here are definitely some of the nicer ones that I have seen though.
Academic Rigor As I mentioned, I'm in the honors program, so I have an above average workload, and it can be stressful at times, but with determination and a good support system, it can be done without too many long nights. My schedule is set up like a double major, basically, and I'm handling it well so far!
Tips for prospective students If you are thinking about attending ETSU, I would definitely recommend looking into some of the honors programs. I'm a member of the University Honors Scholars program, and while it is a very large workload sometimes, it's beyond worth the experience and the feeling of community that is fostered--especially for the first semester of college.
In three sentences I have been attending ETSU for one (loaded) semester, and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here! The area is amazing, and the campus is perfect for people who want to experience a new place. Generally, the campus is very progressive and excellent for young minds.

Categories Comments Greek Life I am friends with some girls & guys involved with greek life, and they all love it!
Clubs and Activities ETSU is overflowing with clubs, groups, and extracurricular activities.
Bang for the buck Attending ETSU you definitely learn a lot. So yes, I'd say you're getting the bang for the buck.
What to do for fun For most college students, college is about the parties. Those students typically hang out at the local club/bars, which are Chrome and ONE21. These are within walking distance of campus. As for my roommate and me, we like to go roller blading, shopping, have dance parties, and other similar activities when we have the time.
Food and Dining Although ETSU offers meal plans to all students, they are a waste of money for manuy reasons. You're best bet is to just stock up your fridge and eat whatever it is you enjoy the most (paying less)! However, there is a chick-fil-a, mexican restaurant, burger joint, and quiznos located on campus. The downfall of these is that it doesn't take much to get burnt out on these places.
Dorm Life Dorm life isn't all its talked up to be. It's definitely a new experience though, and it's probably the best option for incoming freshman. Make sure you have access to a stove though, otherwise you'll completely regret it!
Academic Rigor The academic work is tough, but with the help from the right teachers you are bound to excel.
Tips for prospective students I recommend prospective students to pay ETSU a visit before making a decision on where to attend college. If you aren't already sold on ETSU, you will be by the end of your visit.
In three sentences ETSU has a beautiful campus. The professor's are extremely nice, understanding, and helpful. The library on campus is filled with people ready to guide you, references, and tutors to help you succeed.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck In state tuition is much less than at other universities.
What to do for fun There are lots of clubs and activities on campus. ETSU has a great Veteran's Affairs team for those in the military or with prior service.
Food and Dining The food in the campus cafeteria is good but expensive but there are other options like Starbuck's, Chic-Fil-A, and other places for food as well.
Dorm Life I don't live in the dorms, but some of the newer ones are very nice.
Academic Rigor The classes are tough but not impossible if you are willing to put in the time and effort.
Tips for prospective students Parking is always an ordeal, plan to arrive on campus 45 minutes before class- 30 minutes to park and 15 to walk to your building!
In three sentences I love that this is a smaller school that still has many different degree options available. The faculty and staff are always willing to help and assist in any way possible. The only improvement I would suggest is to offer more online classes or variance in class times to help accommodate students who work full time.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There are many opportunities to socialize on and around campus. ETSU has an excellent gym. Students are surrounded by other students while living on campus so they are constantly coming up with different activities.
Tips for prospective students Students should take good notes. They should also check Goldlink and Goldmail frequently. Students should scope out the campus and where the different buildings are before they start.
In three sentences ETSU has a wonderful staff and campus. Professors are really interested in helping you learn. Technology is used frequently.

Categories Comments Campus Safety ETSU is a very safe campus and has a very good warning system in the event of any danger. Unfortunately, every year there are at least a couple of dangerous things happening on or around campus but within minutes public safety sends out an alert via the speaker system set up around campus as well as through text to everyone's phone that is connected to the system.
Greek Life The presence of greek life is very small at ETSU.
Clubs and Activities There are many clubs that allow students to get involved in either politics or the community. If you really want to get those volunteer hours in and make an impact then there will definitely be an organization in place that will help you do just that.
Great for these types of students I would say that ETSU is a college for people that really want to get things done. While there are parties every now and then this isn't a party college. The lack of sports also means that the people here aren't going to be going out every weekend to just have a good time. Also, the presence of the medical college across the street means that a lot of the students at ETSU are also in pre-medicine programs.
What to do for fun ETSU is located right at the base of a national park and is therefore a great place to go for anyone that enjoys camping, hiking, or exploring the wilderness. There are many trails back in the woods behind campus that students can explore or use for exercise as well. Otherwise, there are many fantastic places to eat around campus as well as clubs and bars that are popular with students.
Food and Dining The dining service at ETSU is pricey but very convenient and worth it if you live in one of the dorms. ETSU offers a full buffet from breakfast to dinner that has many different options. The food isn't always top notch but at least you won't go hungry.
Dorm Life The dorms at ETSU poorly manages and many don't have air conditioning. There is a department that focuses on coming up with things for people that live on campus to do during breaks but these events are few and far between. If you want to pick what university you go to based on dorm life then ETSU isn't where you should go.
Academic Rigor Many courses at ETSU are simple while others are very difficult. As a science major I can say that the science courses here are tough and require a lot of effort to succeed in. If you want to be a success here you must put the effort in.
Tips for prospective students If you're planning to attend ETSU then be prepared to get your head in the game. This isn't the college you go to just to party and have a good time. This is a university you go to if you want to get stuff done and get your life headed on the right path. The work isn't the easiest and the atmosphere doesn't lend towards partying. Just be prepared to get to work and keep that work ethic up.
In three sentences I think ETSU is a fantastic university that has many options for all sorts of students. The campus is beautiful and full of life and the people are friendly and diverse. However, the lack of a football program can sometimes lead to the lack of school pride which may be a drawback to some.
