Great for these types of students

Education majors!!! One of the best schools for educators.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't live on campus if you live near home. The dorms are smaller than normal and it's not worth the money.

    Bang for the buck

It all depends on which degree you are after. Eastern is great for Education majors.

    Am enjoying being here

I like the campus, but not at night. I don't advise taking night classes because it's a little rough.

    Am learning a lot

Eastern has such a wide variety of majors and minors. Professors are personable, but still don't make it easy. You have to work for your grades.

Great for these types of students

Eastern is great for all types. I would recommend this school to anyone. Eastern is a big school with a large student body, yet it maintains a quaint. EMU is also a bit of a commuter school which may be a drawback for some.

    Tips for prospective students

Stay on top of your priorities. Be sure to stay on top of academics and financial aid. Dont be afraid to get involved on campus. Eastern is a place where you can get the most out of your time there by being fully engaged socially and academically. There are a lot of great people attending this school, so you can definitley make some life long friends here. EMU has a impressive library to take advantage of. There are also tons of academic resourses to utilize, that are always accessible if you need help in any area of study.

    Bang for the buck

I received a quality education and i have a great job now due to my education, that i am very proud of. Eastern has an impressive campus and good facilities.

    Did enjoy being here

I had a fun time at Eastern. There was plenty of fun to be had. I have seen some great performances from very high-profile entertainers here on campus. The people were very friendly, and the campus was gorgeous, complete with beautiful landscaping and man-made lakes and fountains. The student center is beautiful. During the fall and spring, there is no better place to be than outside studying near the fountains or on the lawns, socializing, or just taking in the scenery.

    Did learn a lot

Eastern has a good atmosphere for learning. The professors offer a college level challenge, yet are very accessible and more than willing to help if you are having trouble. I felt like the cirriculum was set up for you to become a well rounded and cultured person and open you up to many different learning experiences and ideas.

Great for these types of students

Eastern is great for business students. The school is widely known for its business program.

    Tips for prospective students

It is one of the least D-I school in michigan. It is a great commuting school, almost everyone does it. Eastern has a superb business school and is known for it. Eastern has a small campus and is easy and fast to get around.

Great for these types of students

One has to stay on top of their work by working diligently, not letting anyone be a distraction, managing your time, always present your best work, and putting your best foot forward!

    Tips for prospective students

Don't get caught up in wordly activities because once you attend a party you will want to go time and time again and this will take away your focus and study time. Always keep in mind the reason why your going to college and I hope it isn't to party because you could have done that without paying college tuitions.

    Bang for the buck

Your going to be spending thousands of dollars so why not get your money worth and get those good grades so you can get your desired degree.

    Am enjoying being here

Most people that attend Eastern are very friendly but you always have the odd balls in every school. Eastern has many different functions and activities that on-campus students can enjoy such as: Poetry slams, frat steppers, jazz at night, and the sky lounge.

    Am learning a lot

Eastern Michigan University is a great school and it offers a good Psychology program as well as Business, and Education. The campus is very easy to get use to and the professors are very helpful and most will actually tell you, If your having any problems just let me know and we can talk. I respect a professor that puts passion into their teachings as well as student well being! You don't find this too often.

    Everyone

    Tips for prospective students

As long as you stay focused on getting good grades and ask your teachers for help when you need it, you should do well at EMU.

    Bang for the buck

At EMU you get to experience being a part of a division 1 school that isn't very expensive.

    Am enjoying being here

There's a lot of activities to get involved. There are student organizations, the recreation center, and downtown Ypsilanti. However, during the weekends it is very quiet and empty.

    Am learning a lot

Eastern is a smaller school so you get to know a lot of people. The professors make themselves available whenever you need help. I feel like I'm understanding the material rather than just trying to get a good grade on a test.

Great for these types of students

Students who are naturally outgoing, bright, and dedicated to making their college experience memorable.

    Tips for prospective students

Live on campus (for at least one year). The freshman center is a great place to meet friends and comfortably get involved. Be flexible with your major! I changed mine 3 times my first two years until I settled into business. I definitely made the right choice for me!

    Bang for the buck

With a variety of academic, athletics, and merit-based scholarships and grants available, Eastern Michigan can be an affordable option for many. Graduate assistantships can also make earning an advanced degree very cost-effective. Ohio residence share in-state tuition rates with Michigan residents which is an added perk!

    Did enjoy being here

As with any college/university, getting involved is critical to your success in college. If you expect a college to drag you from your dorm room and show you a good time, you will be disappointed anywhere you go. I found getting involved in academic groups and the Greek system to be extremely valuable to my overall college experience. I also worked on campus (Eastern Echo, Campus Life, and Dining Services) which were great places to meet lifelong friends and feel more involved. In addition, I lived in the residence halls for three years. Eastern has great living and dining options -- it was in the residence halls that I met many people who are most special to me still today.

    Did learn a lot

Completing an undergraduate degree in Marketing, as well as a Master in Business Administration from Eastern's College of Business, I found the faculty to be involved, supportive, and incredibly dedicated. You will learn from industry-leaders. I left with two degrees that put me in a competitive position for obtaining jobs in my field.

Great for these types of students

Because of the flexibility Eastern brings, it is great for transfer students, commuting students, working students, and returning students. Of course, it is good for traditional students as well, everyone is generally accommodated.

    Tips for prospective students

There's no special trick to making one's way through Eastern but some advice I would give is to sign up for classes early, research the professors to find the best one, and make sure to take only the classes relevant to the respective programs you are in.

    Bang for the buck

As far as money goes, Eastern is a good choice. The tuition is lower than a lot of other options and with commuting, it is even cheaper. The university also puts out ample opportunities for scholarships.

    Am enjoying being here

I recently transferred to Eastern and am glad I did. This college makes commuting easy but I am also told by the people who live on campus they enjoy it too. The campus is very manageable and I have never come close to getting lost. The class sizes for the most part are pretty small which allows for more direct feedback from the professors. There are also many places to eat with a variety of choices, I'm a vegetarian and i have never had trouble finding something good to eat. Overall, I enjoy being at Eastern and am happy to continue going there.

    Am learning a lot

I am an education student at Eastern and since being admitted to the College of Education I have learned so much about the field. A lot of the teachers were classroom teachers in the past, so they have real life experience to share. I also have noticed the amount of knowledge I have learned by my vocabulary. I can talk technical terms regarding education with other professionals. The classes allow a lot of experience by observations and working in classrooms. I feel confident in the education I am getting.

Great for these types of students

Great for students who want to learn, student who want to major in computers this is the place for you because NSA actually recruits students in the field.

    Tips for prospective students

If you come here make sure you get involved. It will make your college life so much easier and you will know so many people. Whether its with Student Government, a fraternity or sorority, and anything else. GET INVOLVED!

    Bang for the buck

Eastern is the only college in the state of MI that has their price of tuition increase lower than everyone else. The dorms are nice, the food is good, and the teaching is excellent.

    Am enjoying being here

I love being here. The atmosphere is great, everyone is friendly and laid back. I am a candidate of Sigma Nu Fraternity and they help a lot to make sure their brothers keep up on their grades so it makes me do good in school. Also there is tons of places to eat whether is on campus or a Jimmy Johns off campus that isn't more than a 10 min walk.

    Am learning a lot

I have just completed my first semester at Eastern and so far I have learned quite a bit. Everything from Risk Analysis on buildings and computers to Ethical decisions to learning different types of speech.

Great for these types of students

Students that want the big university without the big university price. Also students who are looking for a family-feeling school. Very friendly and open to students of all types.

    Tips for prospective students

Live on campus, it is easier to get involved especially your first year. With that being said get involved. It is the most important thing I would say to enjoying your college career. Bring a coat; it does get a little chilly!

    Bang for the buck

You get the big university feel, which a compact small campus. Its just right. You can walk from one end of campus to the other in only 11 minutes which is nice on those cold days. You also get the fun on being 10 minutes from Ann Arbor and 20 minutes from Metro Detroit.

    Am enjoying being here

I love my university. There are over 340 clubs and organizations here and I found things for me instantly. I joined kayak club, speech and debate, and i got involved in Greek life which has opened many more doors like inter-mural sports. I liked it so much I recently started a tour guide job on campus so I can show everyone else that's thinking about coming to EMU how amazing it is.

    Am learning a lot

At EMU we are guaranteed not to be taught by Graduate Assistants or Teachers Assistants. I can say that I am learned from professors that are knowledgeable in their fields. At EMU 90% of the professors are tenured which means they are beyond fully qualified to teach. I am doing better grades and GPA wise here at EMU than I was in high school. The professors are required to have 10 hours of office hours a week which means they are just sitting there waiting for you to come talk to them! I go to my professors office hours to get help and also to get to know them.

Great for these types of students

EMU is great for students looking into a career of education. other fields are great but not as big as our education program.

    Tips for prospective students

If you choose EMU as your college, become active in the community! being active with EMU campus helps you meet people and guides you to becoming a leader. also, use the help that they have to provide you!

    Bang for the buck

yes, EMU is expensive but the financial aid office helps you get your financial aid ready and applying for scholarships. EMU also offers many services to help you, including a career center which helps you with choosing a career later helping you apply for scholarships.

    Am enjoying being here

i transferred from a community college, making this my first year living on campus. i believe emu has made the transition easy and enjoyable. plus i live in the dorms and love every minute of it, they provide fun activities and get you involved in on-campus activities. because of that i became active in my dorm by being on the Leadership Advisory Board as the sports coordinator to encourage other residents/students to become active.

    Am learning a lot

I have had one great year attending EMU. i have taken about 30 credit hours this year and haven't had any bad professors. they have all helped me and have made the classes enjoyable!

    Campus Safety

they have escorts to take you places at night, campus security, and a campus police station with on duty police officers. however, there is quite a bit of crime that still occurs. stabbings and rapes to name a few.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

muddy volleyball at the beginning of the year is fun. ice skating on the pond in the winter months.

    What to do for fun

every friday they have a free movie at two separate showings. this is always a fun experience even when it's a dumb movie. there are dances, a drag show, ice skating on the pond in the winter, and other free activities. plus, all of the different clubs to join. life on campus is very fun.

    Food and Dining

emu is doing okay with the dining. there are lots of options spread out on campus so no matter where you are there is something close by. more options open on the weekends would be nice. some people do live on campus.

    Dorm Life

dorm life here would probably be like a 3.5. the rooms are decent, the mattresses are comfortable, and the windows are nice and big. what makes the biggest difference with your dorm experience are the other people that live on your floor.

    Academic Rigor

the academics i have experienced are great so far. i am a music therapy major, and emu has some of the best instructors around. i have not taken any of my gen. eds. yet.

    Tips for prospective students

living on campus the first year is great, however it will also drive you crazy. it makes it easy to get involved and meet new people! but, the small space of the dorm rooms are a little overwhelming after awhile. my biggest advice would be to get involved in things. involvement truly maximizes your college experience.

    In three sentences

so far i love attending this school. the people are very friendly, there is lots to do on campus, and the courses that i have taken are a perfectly challenging level. i would like to see my tuition dollars better spent, however.

    Campus Safety

Safety is a hige deal at Eastern since Ypsilanti is not the nicest of areas. We have a group called SEEUS, which are escorts that are out all night to escort you where ever you are walking to. I usually see them out starting at 5 pm. They also have vans too. And all students get emails and sometimes text messages in extreme cases, informing them of the safety precautions and events in the area.

    Greek Life

I am not personally involved in Greek Life at Eastern but in every General Education class I've had, I see lots of people displaying their Greek letters so I know that it's very popular on campus. However, I've heard that the specific sororities and fraternities we have at Eastern are not the best of the best. Most of their houses seem pretty nice though.

    Clubs and Activities

Eastern Michigan has an unthinkable number of clubs. Everything from a Quidditch team and a Zombie Club to tons of bible studies and more.

Great for these types of students

Eastern is perfect for students who want the university feel but would also like to save money and stay at home. It's also perfect for those who plan to be teachers because that is what Eastern has a longstanding history for creating.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Everyone knows Eastern football team isn't exactly undefeated... however going to football games is sooo fun! The whole students section and marching band has endless cheers and chants to pep up the team. Everyone has a ball, even if we're down by 40.

    Bang for the buck

Eastern is not a very expensive school, but you can definitely get a good education if you really make an effort.

    What to do for fun

For fun there's lots of things to do with your friends. There are free movies at the student center every Friday, things to do at the Rec, plays, sports games to go to, ice skating on the pond in the winter, Starbucks. And if nothing on campus appeals to you, Ann Arbor is right next door. If you're lucky enough to get a snow day, that's when the fun really begins.

    Food and Dining

The food is not always the best at Eastern, honestly. Sometimes it seems to only get worse. The best food is found at the marketplace over but the upperlclassmen dorms, which can be quite a hike but it's well worth it.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is great. I would say it is best in the Honors dorm because you are surrounded by like-minded people that are far more respectful than the dorms that I lived in for two years. Who you surround yourself with at Eastern can make a big deal for your success.

    Academic Rigor

The academics at Eastern are what you make of it. Most classes I have taken, I have had to work for my grade but you will definitely find those people in your classes, just like in high school, that slack off and distract the rest of us.

    Tips for prospective students

Live on campus! If you can afford it, do it. Since your whole life will be surrounded by school, you are guaranteed to meet lots of people, and really feel like a part of it all. Also, apply for the Honors College. It is not strenuous work but it really makes a difference.

    In three sentences

Eastern Michigan is a wonderful place for aspiring educators to be. Most students commute so it has the feel of a community college but if you're living on campus, it's also very easy to make friends and get involved. I have met so many interesting people here.

Great for these types of students

EMU is great for all students. They offer 200 undergraduate majors. If your looking to attend a college that's not that big, and not really expensive, then EMU is a great choice

    Tips for prospective students

Don't get caught up in wordly activities, stay focused. If you attend EMU make sure you keep in mind the reason why your going to college, do not get caught up in any kind of trouble.

    Bang for the buck

EMU is not that expensive. It is affordable, if you want to attend its about 17,500. That is a very good price, plus you can the time of your life, a good education, and you will be glad to work towards your future career.

    Will enjoy being here

I visited the campus, the campus is great. It's a bit small but that's the good thing. You really have the time to do what you want, you can study more, and you can also talk to professors one on one, you get more time to be with your peers. When you are attending a larger college you really do not get to experience that.

    Will learn a lot

Eastern Michigan is a smaller University in Michigan. That's a good thing becasue you can can one on one time with the professors, you have a lot of time to do stuff, and you will be in contact with people more.

Great for these types of students

Like being away from home. Want to learn to be on their own. Like being around others. Easy-going. Want to get their moneys worth on their education. Want to get involved on campus.

    Tips for prospective students

Learn how to properly manage your time and homework. Always study for important tests ahead of time. Wake up early for class. Make friends. (It betters your college experience)

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is pretty affordable. Eastern is one of the more affordable schools in Michigan, but along with being affordable they provide a good education.

    Am enjoying being here

Eastern Michigan University is an excellent university. Since I have been here, the people have been very welcoming and humble. I especially love how easy it is to get from class to class on a daily basis. To get completely across campus it takes less than 15 minutes, usually 10 for me. The only draw back is the boys. Some of the boys lack proper manners, be careful who you befriend.

    Am learning a lot

Since I began class, things have been going pretty well. I love the class sizes for most of my classes. The professors are approachable and very easy to talk to about any issue at hand. The workload is average, but can be overwhelming if you don't manage your time properly.

Great for these types of students

It is a great school for future teachers, commuters, working students, parents, and of course regular students who want to live on campus. It can work for everyone.

    Tips for prospective students

I would meet with a counselor to plan out courses and explore the campus and surrounding area!

    Bang for the buck

Part of the reason I transferred to Eastern was because of the financial options available. Scholarships and loans are widely available and helpful. The university has also kept tuition down when a lot of other school tuitions are rising.

    Am enjoying being here

I transferred here from another school and am really glad I did. I love the campus and where it is and have found many things to do on and off campus. I feel confident in my classes and have a lot of support from the university.

    Am learning a lot

The classes I have had to take are usually pretty interesting and teach me a lot of things I didn't know. I feel like I am being really prepared for my future career.

Great for these types of students

Any one who wants to get a great degree at a relatively cheap cost in comparison with any other colleges. There are so many options for anything that you could ever want.

    Tips for prospective students

I was told this when I first came to Eastern, and it is Make this what you want that was the best advice I could have ever received. I found my niche within minutes of stepping on campus and could not have enjoyed my time here any more that what I currently do.

    Bang for the buck

One of the cheapest Universities that I looked into and it is one of the best experiences I have ever had. Plus financial aid has paid for all of my schooling with the exception of aviation costs (which is a very expensive major to get into).

    Am enjoying being here

It truly is my new home after high school. The campus is small but with a lot of students. I have never walked across campus without running into someone that I know and enjoy talking to. At the same time however, there are so many students that you always get the opportunity to make new friends.

    Am learning a lot

The professors are very knowledgeable and are very experienced. Outside of the classroom I have learned more then I thought I ever could. It has been an amazing experience, and I could not ask for more.

    Campus Safety

The campus safety is absolutely superb. There is not one incident on campus that will not be noticed immediately. Eastern has a program called See-Us which provides personal safety for students who do not feel safe walking around the campus. They will escort you to your destination safely.

    Greek Life

Kappa, Omega, Beta, Iota, etc. There are many different organizations around campus to choose from.

    Clubs and Activities

There are D-1 sports available as well as Intramural sports.

Great for these types of students

If you like to party and stay up all night, Eastern is definitely a place to go. It is always a live atmosphere. But it is also serious when it comes to the work. Work is always important. But I am positive that there is a way to tie both into one schedule.

    What to do for fun

There are numerous frat houses around the campus that hosts parties every week. That is a chill spot. There are a few clubs in the area. Most people attend parties that are in apartments around campus. I personally go to the Rec/IM Center every day to play basketball. I love basketball. Or I would just go outside to socialize. I am well known around the campus.

    Food and Dining

At first, the food was amazing. There is such a big variety of foods available to eat at EMU. However, towards the end of the school year, the food choices became more and more repetitive and I began to steer away from it. Then again, who can eat the same thing every single day.

    Dorm Life

I personally loved my dorm experience. My room was kind of the chill spot so many people would stop by everyday and just relax, laugh, and just have fun. However, the dorms are sort of small, but as most colleges have for their freshman students, the room size is not a main priority for incoming students.

    Academic Rigor

All of my classes consisted of professors that made my first year of college the greatest. My professors were very lenient on work and made sure all of the material was comprehensible.

    Tips for prospective students

The main goal of attending Eastern Michigan University, as well as any other college, is become lazy enough whereas your grades are a negative reflection of your effort. The work is not that hard and do not put partying before school work. That is what I did, but I definitely learned from it second semester.

    In three sentences

Eastern Michigan offers opportunities that will definitely satisfy the majors offered. There are several clubs/sports that allows interaction with other students/peers. The academic curriculum is the most interesting I have ever seen.

    Campus Safety

Eastern is located in a rough area. The campus has many safety perventions. Not alot happens on campus, but there are robberies off campus.

    Greek Life

I live on campus and the greeks are always throwing events. I used to go to eastern and the greeks were far more of a presences in the community and on campus.

    Bang for the buck

Eastern Definately is a great option for those who can not offered some of the more expensive Universities. The best part is that they offer much of the stuff that these Universities have.

    What to do for fun

There are many organizations at Eastern. It is easy to get involved on campus and make friends. The dorms often throw programs for students to attend and the Universitys offer newer movies every weekend. Usually one on friday and another on saturday. All sporting events are free and come with free shuttles to the games and back

    Food and Dining

There are several locations for eating around campus. The one thing I would complain about at Eastern is the food. I lived on campus for year and found that home style food is at a lack. There is one buffet style eating facility called the commons. The food is very blan and flavorless. I found myself leaving hungry most of the time. The eating facility connected to the Freshman dorms is no good. At first you'll love the fast food style of eating, but after a month or so you will find your self sick. The upper classmen's eating facility is very nice. It is the furthest from the main dorms, but very much worth the walk. The student center also provides good meals for commuters and residents.

    Dorm Life

Easterns housing is not the best. It is very cheap to commute from home so if you have that option take it. Many of the students commute. If not the higher end dorms cost a bit more, but are definately worth it. Such as Buell, Downing, The Towers, and the Village. The freshman center is okay. In dorms like Best and Wise things are very old. You ill also find great frustration with the Wifi.

    Academic Rigor

Eastern Michigan has some awesome programs. Even though it is not one of the top schools in Michigan. The proffesors care and want there students to excell. Once your into your major, ofcourse, the work gets a little more extensive. Classes are challenging and fun.

    Tips for prospective students

    In three sentences

Eastern Michigan brings you the campus enviorment you want at affordable prices. The class room sizes tend to be smaller than a larger University and the people are very friendly. I love EMU and the variety of programs they offer.

    Campus Safety

Eastern Michigan has their own police force that patrols the grounds 24/7. On campus, there are poles with blue lights on the, emergency poles, and if the button on said pole is pushed a police officer will be there in under one minute. Also, if there is an incident, the campus police and the university let every student know what is going on so that we can all be as safe as possible.

    Clubs and Activities

There are over 200 student organizations on campus. There is a club for every interest out there, and if for some strange reason there is not a specific club that you are looking for get you and at least two other people together and start a new club.

Great for these types of students

Eastern is great for any type of student, but it is especially great for the student who is seeking to become an educator. Often times EMU is referred to as a teachers school. They offer every subject related to education in secondary, elementary, early childhood and even special education.

    Bang for the buck

Located slightly off campus is a store called Neds Bookstore where you can find all types of Eastern wear and books cheaper than you will ever find on campus. It is a small store, but definitely worth the trip.

    What to do for fun

Each week on campus there is something going on. Whether its a free Friday night movie, swing dancing at sky lounge, getting involved in one of our over 200 organizations, or playing in a pick-up game of capture the flag, there is always something to do. If you are ever bored as a student on campus the only excuse is that you have not left your room in days.

    Food and Dining

There are many dining options on campus that offers a variety of foods. While there is a wide variety of food, it may not always be warm or good for you. My advice, stay away from the Eateries. It has a bad reputation for making people either overweight or sick.

    Dorm Life

At EMU the residence halls are separated based on interest. I, for example, am in the honors residence hall. Being place in a dorm with people who think like you and are interested in similar things makes it easy to make friends and get involved. Each residence hall puts on programs for the residents including, but not limited to, yoga, ping pong tournaments, finger painting, dance nights, and video game tournaments. Each person who works in a residence hall is outgoing and always willing to help. EMUs residence halls are an amazing place, because it allows you to make friends without even leaving the building.

    Academic Rigor

The academics at Eastern Michigan University are rigorous. The university requires that each student study and stay focused. The professors, however, are amazing. They teach the material in a way that engages each student so learning isnt a chore. The professors are willing to do whatever it takes to help their students succeed. It is a lot of material, that can sometimes be difficult, but the way professors present the information you learn and retain the information instead of just memorizing it for a test.

    Tips for prospective students

As a prospective student you should consider applying early, how to get involved, and if you qualify, applying to the Honors College. After a tour given by an EMU student, you will see what Eastern Michigan University has to offer everyone.

    In three sentences

Eastern Michigan University is a college you can call home. The students faculty and staff are all caring individuals who will do anything to see you succeed. Not only does it provide a place for you to grow intellectually, but a place to grow as an individual.

Education and Business majors. It was built on Education and is well-known for its business.

    Tips for prospective students

Although it is known to be more of a party school, it's not worth to waste your money when you can get a great education if you just keep your habits in the positive zone.

    Bang for the buck

Uber cheap, but not in a bad way. lots of scholarships, so the $17,000 a year is easily knocked down to an even more affordable rate.

    Will enjoy being here

It's a big campus for me, personally, and I heard a couple bad things about the school, especially involving the crime rate, from a professor there when I went to visit. However, that information was also 4 years old, so I don't know how reliable it still would be.

    Will learn a lot

It's a normal-sized school but it has a small-town feel to it, with the personal one-on-one that is desired for a good education.

Great for all types of students: honors, athletes, independent, social, etc.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply early. Most students are accepted but the sooner you are accepted, the sooner you can make an appointment to schedule and the more likely you are to register for the classes you want. Which, let's face it, will make you a happier student.

    Bang for the buck

Eastern prides itself on 0%. Meaning that they did not raise the rates of attendance. Tuition, room and board, and fees did not go up. They also offer many scholarships and there are people whose only job is to help students with financial aid.

    Am enjoying being here

A small town feel with a big city attitude. I love going to Eastern. Most classes are small, limited to about 50-60 or less. I never feel like I'm lost in the crowd. And it is so easy to make friends and feel like a part of the community.

    Am learning a lot

There is a wide array of majors and minors to choose from at Eastern. There are always classes that will spark someone's interest and the professors are very personable and helpful. They enjoy what they do so you can enjoy what they teach you.

    Bang for the buck

College at EMU is what you make you make it, all you have to do is explore all opportunities, and don't be afraid. You can become whoever you want to be. EMU is one of the cheapest colleges around with great recognition and experience.

    What to do for fun

Activities around campus, fusion, mentoring, ball games, tennis, swimming, bowling, self defense classes. Be in a band, movie nights, getting a right in a limo with friends or new friends to meet from campus to go out to eat.

    Food and Dining

You will get to enjoy a diversity of foods, have over 12 different restaurants in over 4 different areas that consists of over 100 different meals just on campus not including off. But remember it is up to you not to get over whelmed by all the foods and neglect your health.

    Dorm Life

Be friendly, remember that your a pre-adult and you need to get out of the bird nest and gain a mature state of mind the can expand you quality of friends and life but not just maintain it, where it will stay the same and you learn nothing. It is a wonderful experience because you get the understanding of what its like to have to be responsible and take care of your self, your own life is in your hands now and depends on you, not your parents or peers.

    Academic Rigor

Explore all options because there are more than you think, keep in good with academics. It is very important and remember your not alone unless you make your self isolated.

    Tips for prospective students

Since going into college is a different lime light from high school or just a different college period I that is going to determine your future I would suggest to get advice from advisors but go to the head of the department to find out info on the major you want to pursue but use your own intuition as well. take all gen eds first then start on major classes because it will get that high school feeling out the way. Make sure you read the student handbook so you will understand the concepts of how the school works just in case you run into any encounters. Attend different activities and don't skip out on assignments because you may not realize while your a freshmen or sophmore but once its time too look into grad schools and your gpa isn't up to the standards it will hurt you so please make sure your at your best work ethic and not just passing.

    In three sentences

EMU is a wonderful college, they have great professors, with a good staff behind them. If anyone has a problem with something, they can feel free to write a letter to voice their opinion to the source of the problem and something will get done about it. Current and future students will not be in the dark at EMU unless the make their self in the dark because someone at Eastern is always there to help you, you just have to ask or interact your self.

Want to stay close enough to home, like to volunteer, enjoy exploring the area, have school spirit, open to diversity.

    Tips for prospective students

Give Eastern a chance! I wasn't crazy about it at first, but I also was not involved and unfamiliar to a large school. It takes adjusting, but you'll find that Eastern will welcome you with open arms if you let it happen. Take a tour with someone one-on-one, instead of a group tour, and you'll learn a lot more about the school.

    Bang for the buck

There are a lot of scholarships available just for having good grades and being in certain communities like the Honors College or living in dorms. The tuition isn't that bad, and it is certainly cheaper than area schools like U of M.

    Am enjoying being here

There is a fantastic amount of diverse and exciting ways to be involved on campus. As a second year New Student Orientation Leader, and a member of Circle K International and Active Minds, I am able to keep myself very busy exploring the community and helping others. There are also great campus jobs available, and you can have more than one, like I do. Volleyball games, free movies on Friday nights, super cute town areas with restaurants and stores.... there is always something to do.

Great for these types of students

Great for students that struggled for good grades in high school. Great for commuter students, because its so close to so many big cities. Great for people who struggled to fit into high school, the diversity on campus makes anyone and everyone a welcome member of the family. Great for anyone from a place were opportunites were limited, this is your place to build yourself up and get away from anything that could limit you.

    Tips for prospective students

Come in with an open mind towards new people and new experiences! Be willing to check out teams or clubs. I highly recommend living on campus if possible, it is a great way to meet new people and have fun. There is always something going on! Classes (Gen Ed's at least) won't take too much work, just make sure you do it, and you'll be fine.

    Bang for the buck

Compared to other colleges across Michigan with equal educational opportunities, Eastern's tuition is reasonably less than others. In addition, smaller class sizes allow for more individual time with professors, and each department has competent and helpful faculty who are always willing to assist, at no cost to you. Tutoring is provided for all students at no cost, along with group studying sessions which are organized yet optional for all students. Housing is reasonably priced and comfortable.

    Am enjoying being here

There are a lot of friendly people on campus, Many of these people are willing to help or welcome you in any way they can. Housing frequently provides themed activities and get-togethers that are a great way to meet people and make friends. The food is good, and there is plenty of variety. The atmosphere at the most popular places, like the Commons, Student Center, and Halle Library is welcoming and fun. Campus is the perfect size, easy to navigate, and no walk is too far.

    Am learning a lot

Learning opportunities are present not only in the classroom, but also beyond. Classroom life is serious, but not too stressful; Classes must be taken seriously but will not often be overwhelming. The diversity on campus is an opportunity in itself. There are students of all ages, from all stages in life, and of all races and cultures. Groups, clubs, and teams are all easy to access and join. If you take advantage of all the opportunities on campus, you can learn a lot every day.

There are also several organizations, fraternities, and sororities which also lends to the social nature of Eastern Michigan University.

Great for these types of students

EMU is great for students who are looking for a more personalized and individual approach to education. EMU also provides a less expensive and less academically rigorous alternative to its neighbor, U of M.

    What to do for fun

There are a lot of IM sports, club sports, non-atheltic club activities, game rooms, etc...

    Food and Dining

The food is alright, there are a few options. Eastern really does a good job trying to make accommodations for students with food intolerances/allergies like myself.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are extremely conveniently and centrally located on campus, I can roll out of bed and be in my first class ten minutes later.

    Academic Rigor

If you're looking for academic rigor I would strongly recommend applying to the Honors College. My honors courses are more intellectually stimulating that the regular classes, which can often be dull and slow moving.

    In three sentences

Eastern is really focused on providing its undergraduate students with individual attention and research learning opportunities. Teacher to student ratios are high, my largest current class has about thirty students and it's a freshman intro to chem lecture. Students are given so much attention and Eastern really pushes everyone to succeed.

    What to do for fun

The Student Center hosts many events--definitely check them out! There are some nice movie showings both outdoors and in an auditorium. Get involved in some clubs or join a group, and you'll have plenty of new friends and things to do for fun.

    Food and Dining

The Student Center is nice and has an ok selection of restaurants, but the campus area does not have many options at all.

    Campus Safety

Ypsilanti is a pretty rough area in itself, the campus security is always driving around day and night, and the school always sends out an email alert anytime a crime has occurred on campus or close to campus. MAJORITY of the time it is NOT on campus just close to campus, but as I said Ypsilanti is not a real nice area.

    Tips for prospective students

If you work a full-time day job, I would seriously question going to Eastern because of the availability of when classes are offered. However if you don't have any conflicting schedules during the day, Eastern would probably be a great school for you. Majority of the Professors in the Social Work department are very knowledgeable and have experience in the field, many of them still do work outside of teaching, in the field of social work.

    In three sentences

The majority of the professors in the social work program are absolutely amazing! They will teach you so much valuable information that will apply to your career. However the scheduling aspect, and availability and time arrangements of classes is a complete and utter mess, it is extremely frustrating and it's hard to get help to try to work an adequate schedule out (at least if you work full-time, which I do), so it's a nightmare.

Ypsilanti may seem scary at first glance, but that is just any city. The campus itself is very safe. There is a program called SEEUS where students can be escorted to any building after dark just by a phone call or by coming across a SEEUS worker pair. There are emergency phone that light up blue and they are located everywhere. At night it is impossible not to always have one in sight. The dorms all lock after 7p.m. It is then necessary to use a student ID to get into the buildings, and after 10p.m. students and any guests must check-in just after entering the doors.

Academically, I try my hardest to stay on top. My professors alert me when they feel like I'm not working to the best of my ability and I like that.

    Tips for prospective students

I advise you to stay on your A game in college. It's not all about partying and having fun. your future is in your hands; make it count.

    Tips for prospective students

Great with processing finical aid. Get to know your roommate. Go to the first class. Take advantage of the Holmer Success Center, offers free tutors and many other great things.

    Bang for the buck

Eastern Michigan is the only public university that hasn't raised their tuition and room and board rates. Which is great especially in this tough economy. Refund can be amazing if you need it. They offer jobs through the CAP program that allows you to work and instead of a pay check it pays for your tuition and room and board. Scholarships are easy to come about.

    Will enjoy being here

I cant wait to live on campus here. When I visited the campus everyone was so friendly and made you feel at home! They have free movies and club nights, many Greek organizations, and leadership programs available.

    Academic Rigor

You will learn and grow from Eastern amazing academic programs and great campus community.

    Dorm Life

I did not live in the dorms so I do not have much to say about this.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on your program, your class schedule and amount of work for those classes can either be really light or extremely heavy. How hard a class is usually depends on the program it is a part of and the professor who is teaching it. Some teachers have really high standards for their students while others are fairly low. Some of the programs have set standards which can be high at times.

    Tips for prospective students

Get to know some of the professors and students in your program to find out if you will enjoy it and fit in well.

    In three sentences

The music and education programs are amazing. The music professors are awesome and really care about their students and helping them succeed, even in things beyond the scope of their classes. The general education program can be a bit of a drag and some of the professors teaching those classes could care less about being there and teaching the classes, but if you try it can be enjoyable.

There is SEE-US which it is a group of students who walk around at night and will walk you wherever you need if you are alone. Also, the EMU campus police is right on campus so whenever something happens they are right there.

    What to do for fun

You can go to sporting events, just be involved somehow. There are plenty of clubs and activities. You can always go down to Ann Arbor if you get bored in Ypsilanti.

    Food and Dining

The best food is probably at the marketplace. The other places aren't bad but they get old after the first few months. Nothing compares to home-cooked food.

    Dorm Life

I love the fact that the dorms have heat but dislike that there is no air-conditioning. Having no air-conditioning get's rough. But overall, the rooms are nice size and not bad at all.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are all what you make them. Yes, of course some classes will be honors classes or ones that will be harder. My advice is that you learn to adapt to your strengths and weaknesses.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure when you apply and send your transcript that it is the first grade point average that you want them to see. When I first applied I sent in my transcript just so I could make the deadline but when I graduated I had a higher grade point average and was eligible for more scholarships.

    In three sentences

I give Eastern Michigan University a 7 out of 10 with 10 being the highest. I love the campus and the professors and especially the College of Business. One of the greatest things about the school is that they offer in-state tuition for Ohio residents.

    Clubs and Activities

EMU has a lot of clubs, but none of them are really worth joining. I've looked into nearly all of them and have come back each time disappointed.

    Bang for the buck

Considering EMU had one of the lowest tuition rates while I began my collegiate career there, I believe that this particular institution was worth the money I paid to attend. The recent increase in tuition however has made me begin to regret my choice in universities.

    What to do for fun

I head out to Ann Arbor to swing dance or to Depot Town to window shop. Frog Island is a nice park, but it floods often. Be sure to take a friend with you; walking alone is not a smart idea.

    Food and Dining

EMU has a great selection of food, but be prepared to pay a high price for it. If you are vegan or vegetarian, you will not have many options and you will have to buy food before five o'clock if you want anything with good quality. The Green Bistro is amazing, but closes early every day and is not open on weekends.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life at Eastern Michigan is terrible. I can remember constantly being yanked from my sleep because some uninvited person would pound on every door on the floor asking for some girl. The security appears to be good, but the night watch staff really does not do the job assigned to them. The resident advisers generally do not care for residents (there are a few good ones, but they are rare!)

    Academic Rigor

If you are looking for a challenge, you have to go after it. The professors at EMU will rarely challenge students unless the class is a 400 level class. Once you do ask for more stimulation though, most professors are more than willing to comply and you will not regret attending this university.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved on campus as much as you possibly can with your specific class and work load. Also, during classes or through other communications, ask your professors for help and extra ways to challenge your brain in subjects that interest you. Finally, do not choose your major right away; you should dabble in varying classes before making a concrete decision.

    In three sentences

Eastern Michigan University seemed okay to me for the first couple of years. I did not like the environment at all and the classes were not challenging. I soon found my place and I now enjoy the environment and the classes are tailored more towards me, so I am being challenged every day.

The Honors dorms at this school are easily the best on campus. They have two wings for two roommates each, with a center living room area and a small bathroom.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are not that hard here. They do challenge your abilities but if you pay attention, it is nothing to worry about. Overall there should not be any problems from classes here unless you just generally do not enjoy the subject matter.

    What to do for fun

The word fun can be anything to satisfy a person. I believe Eastern offer many programs, clubs, organizations, and groups to find your fun on campus. There is always something to do or be done. Also, people go to our recreation center, outside basketball court, volleyball area, and student center to enjoy yourselves with friends.

    Food and Dining

The dining at Eastern is good and has many options to choose from to eat. They also support vegetarians food habits. I believe they offer great meal plan options for undergraduates.

    Dorm Life

Honestly, the dorm life is not enjoyable. Eatern dorms needs remodling. The rooms are old and prices are very expensive to settle in no AC, wireless, and brick walls dorms.

    Academic Rigor

Eastern Michigan professors has been very helpful and understand towards their students from my experience. The tutors and our writing center provided is very helpful. Eastern cares and put everyone education first.

    Campus Safety

Campus Safety is pretty good here. We really get a bad rep here at Eastern with a lot of stuff that has happened in the past and stuff that goes on around here. I personally know many of the police officers on campus and they make a point to get to know people as well. The response time on situations is easily under 5 minutes. We do have our share of crime and timely warnings. Overall, I feel safe here and never once have I felt otherwise.

    Greek Life

The Greek life on this campus is extremely lively. Many of my friends are in Greek life and love it. If you have an interest in going Greek, I would recommend going to rush week. You'll meet a lot of awesome people and make a lot of friends!

    Clubs and Activities

Saying that we have a lot of clubs at Eastern would be an understatement. We have 17 Sports clubs (https://www.emich.edu/recim/clubsports/) and we have 283 active organizations (http://emu.collegiatelink.net/organizations)!

Great for these types of students

This school is great for business or teaching majors, I personally find this college to also be great for psychology.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

A really nice place to go on campus is Bob's Lake House. Weird thing is, no one knows why it's called Bob's Lake House. We've asked around to just about everyone at the college, even our current president Susan Martin does not have the answer. It's one of EMU's biggest mysteries!

    Bang for the buck

Being completely honest, it can be hit or miss. Every now and again you'll get a professor who is just starting out in their teaching career and it is really rocky. However, a little protip: because we are so close to UofM we have many professors here at EMU who are full time professors at UofM. Same high class education at a much cheaper cost.

    What to do for fun

Everyone wants to have some fun from time to time. Luckily with EMU being located so closely to Ann Arbor there is plenty to do. Enjoy having a night life? Well Ann Arbor is pretty much awake all night long. With clubs like Necto to go to and plenty of odd little shops, you'll have a great time. Hungry and tired of campus food? Got you covered! We have great places to eat right in walking distance! Sidetracks is a well known burger joint in the area and the food is great! Not feeling burgers? Hit up Tower Inn, that place has everything! The food is really good there and is owned by and EMU graduate! Looking for things on campus? OK. We have comedy clubs, dancing, open mic night, plays, and much, much more! All free through campus life! There is a lot to do here, you just have to look!

    Food and Dining

There are various places on campus to eat. We have the Eateries which is like a mall food court. We have the commons, which is an all you care to eat buffet type place with home cooked meals. The Market Place, which has Einstein bagels and where the majority of the best tasting food is at. In our student center we have some great food as well. A lot of options, just not always a good option when going to the Eateries or the Commons.

    Dorm Life

EMU's dorm life is great. I may be a little biased as I work as an RA in the first year center. In all honesty though, I commuted 3 out of my 4 years in college and I absolutely love living on campus. Eastern has two governing bodies that are involved in making the students who live on campus feel right at home; Residential Life and Residential Life Services. They employ students who understand where you are coming from and are willing to do what they can to make your transition from High School to College that much easier. And Hey, if something goes wrong, Residential Life Services will be right on top of things. They don't mess around here. Residential Life is a high priority here at EMU.

    Academic Rigor

Of the three colleges I have attended since starting my Undergrad this is by far the most lax on academic toughness. However, it really depends on your program. A business or teaching major will have a much higher academic workload than that of a psychology major like myself. It truly depends on your major at this college.

    Tips for prospective students

For any college you nay be interested in attending, you should take a tour first to see if you like the campus. If you are an incoming freshman, I would highly suggest living on campus for the first year. It allows you to get to know people around you and to get a feel for campus life. Having a network of peers is a very useful tool. The biggest tip I can offer any of you is to become well acquainted with your professors, many of them can get you right into a job before graduating!

    In three sentences

Eastern Michigan University is a phenomenal college to attend if you are looking to get into business or becoming any type of teacher. The campus is beautiful and everything is in walking distance. Oh, and our campus life is awesome; so many free things to do!

The campus safety is pretty spot on, the police patrol all the time. My only gripe is that you must watch where you park otherwise you will get a $25 parking ticket.

    What to do for fun

Downtown Ann Arbor is a mech a of fun--there are tons of places to eat, there is an arcade, there is the amazing Michigan Theatre, there is shopping. Ypsilanti is a bit less of a city-oriented place, but has a lot to do as well.

    Food and Dining

There are TONS of places to eat in both Ypsi and Ann Arbor and a huge range of restaurants. I suggest looking around, especially downtown Ann Arbor and trying a bunch of the different varieties of ethnic restaurants.

    Dorm Life

I don't know much about it because I don't live in a dorm--I do however live in an apartment and I love it. It is usually pretty quiet which is awesome.

    What to do for fun

Get involved in the different activities that are on campus sometimes such as movie nights, laugh lounges or special weeks that organizations organize for certain events.

    Food and Dining

Most of the food here is unhealthy and there aren't very many choices. There are only four different places to eat here on campus. The food choices almost never change. There are only two places on campus that change they're food choices on a daily basis.

    Academic Rigor

The work is not easy but it is not too difficult to understand. No one will keep you updated on your grades. Most professors make you calculate your grade out yourself.

    Tips for prospective students

    Get involved with Vision.

    Food and Dining

Depending on where you eat will depend on what they have. The Eagle Cafes are quiet cheap for a convience store and the soup they have in there are amazing. Other than this the food courts are pretty tasty and I can't remember the name but the buffet type food hall is perfect during finals week. You can stay in there all day with only one meal plan provided you don't leave, if you leave you have to pay again, but if you stay there all day essentially you'll be getting breakfast, lunch, and dinner with one meal-plan.

    Dorm Life

Even if you're a commuter or a resident you're going to be in the dorms one way or another. I would say the best places to live is in the village but good luck getting in there. And I'm a little bias with the dorms because I'm an honors student but the best dorms to be in are Downing Hall.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on the classes you take will define how rigorous your semester will be. So what I would suggest is get the hard courses out of the way or take them over the summer where the professors are more laid-back or take a mix of hard with easy. And again check out your professors at blog.ratemyprofessors.com it will save you from choosing the wrong professor for you.

    Tips for prospective students

First off, if you're plan on attending this university I would strongly urge you to go to every day of the first four orientation, you get free stuff, make new friends, you gain useful information from upperclassman, and you learn what it's means to be here. Also, when signing up for your classes I would highly recommend the website blog.ratemyprofessors.com it gives you a heads up on all the professors in the university and if you have no idea about the subject you're able to check out your future professors. Finally, whether you're a commuter or resident student, get involved in the school because you're more likely to feel unconnected to the university and drop-out or transfer. Getting involved helps you make connections, new friends, new experiences, helps you define who you are as a person, and gives you something to do if you're bored.

    In three sentences

Eastern Michigan University is one of the most friendliest, most comforting places I have ever been because not only are the professors and advisers the most helpful and nicest people you will ever meet but the program coordinators, upperclassmen, cooks, almost anyone on campus is so friendly, down to earth, and very helpful which I feel makes you feel at home here. EMU has wonderful opportunities on campus for both the commuters and residents which include academic resources that benefit you during finals week or cramming for that next exam like the study lounges that are chock full of informational boards, snacks, quiet study rooms, and a lot more. Eastern Michigan University is where I'm going to grow into who I'm going to be; it's where I will make long lasting friendships because the university give you many opportunities to, and finally it's where I'm going to soar.

DC1 (buffet-style eatery on campus) Make use of the coupon books you're given during Freshmen Orientation. You get discounts all over the city. Also, make sure to show your EMU ID anywhere and everywhere. It gets you discounts in places outside of Ypsilanti (where accepted).

    What to do for fun

Our Friday night movies in the SC (student center) are fun. You meet lots of people and it's free along with all of our other events. I've been here four years and I love it.

    Food and Dining

You can get food everywhere on campus, but DC1 is awesome because it's buffet style. I'm surprised I avoided the Freshman 15.

    Dorm Life

The Eastern Michigan Annual Homecoming Pep-Rally includes teams of students that sign up for events around campus in leu of the Homecoming game, rack up point, obtain prizes and compete for the the spirit of EMU! Foot ball games have many traditions and include students that other themselves in anything* (face paint, sparkles) that is of the EMU colors and participate the funky chants that go along with motivating our team! The EMU children's theater has the yearly tradition of showing how Christmas comes but once a year and besides the presents come even more important moral values to be learned about kindness and giving.

    Bang for the buck

When making friends on campus, you learn that the number one financial reason they came to Eastern Michigan University was of the reasonable cost, which for 'residents' can range per credit hour from $250-520 (depending on course level) and non-residents $750-1000 (depending on course level). Financial cost is something that most usually comes up in conversation, and having friends in class that commute to campus, live on campus, and are either international students attests to, after talking to them, one of the main* reasons they have chosen EMU. Though students should and can heavily place their considerations on choosing an accredited college based on cost, other reasons such as: prestige, location, and accommodations come to mind; by which EMU excels in.

    What to do for fun

The student center is a newly built facility that hold encompasses many of the campus's student events, amenities, every day recreational indoor activities such as: Gaming at he 'Ezone' (with air hockey, and all of the game consoles), free Friday 'Movie Night', and the 'Sky Lounge' that has events (Stand up comedians, swing dancing, jazz social hour, Story Teller Lounge and more!) on the third floor every Thursday night at 9pm. After the initial start of the school year, that has events all across the board with foot ball games, hall volley ball pizza tournaments with music, treasure hunts and ect, there is the recreational center that offers many types of free exercise and dance classes such as: racquetball, zumba, weight rooms, rock climbing, gladiator training, two pools with a hot tube (an Olympic size pool), and a lounge area for studying/relaxing with T.V.

    Food and Dining

Dining is wonderful and has 7 locations (e/a of which containing other sub categories of other dining areas on campus), but the main stage of dinning takes place at the buffet style 'Commons' and is wonderful because of the many different food venues such as: Homemade, Grill, Pasta, Stir-Fry, Dessert, Soup, Salad & Fruit Bars, that offer a massive amount of selection. The particular location near my resident halls is the 'Market Place' and includes a buffet staff served area as well as a mini convenience/lounge section with amenities and is very accommodating. Improvements on usage of the student I.D./meal plan card called the 'Eagle One' are taking into consideration incorporating businesses outside of the campus to accept student meal plans and I feel this would be amazing but it is sadly still under consideration.

    Dorm Life

The R.A.'s (Resident Advisers) of a students floor can really make the difference and here at Eastern Michigan University, from my experience, I feel they have been properly trained because the multitude of Monthly/Bi-weekly events that are planned out by flyer/word-of-mouth, bulletin board or by e-mail is extensive and releases much unwanted stress. The amount of activities carried out in the Dorm Halls is motivating enough for any student to not always feel the need to go off campus, where it may be dangerous, to party. The events and courteous people/suite-mates make dorm life more than pleasant and staff are always available to listen if a person is feeling otherwise.

    Academic Rigor

I have attended Minneapolis Community & Technical college before Eastern Michigan University and though EMU accepts prospective students from an array of backgrounds and with wide ranging GPA's the comparative difference on learnt information was of course amplified, but not overblown. The many trials/exercises-such as: quizes, real life conceptual in class activities, reports, and experiments that take place in the lab portion of the class that are separate, but in conjunction with lecture underscore the innate difference. Lecture portions of classes hone your note taking/review ability and remain essential.

    Tips for prospective students

Meet more than several times with an adviser to personally go over /keep log of your own room& board, meal plan, tuition costs, as well as call your school to see who is/what company holds your loans and find out how much in Stafford* loans you have or have left. Try to contact and meet your room-mate before moving in (this will save you a future headache or moving out mid-semester) and watch youtube videos on dorm life to get a better account of the way of life and supplies needed. Look into the many programs universities/colleges offer that also include career path training but also offer your full-fledged masters or Bachelors degree of choice!

    In three sentences

Eastern Michigan University's advising, classes, and programs have coherently directed and welcomed and array of students into a highly accredited and esteemed institution, including myself, that may have come from a troublesome background that independently or dependently went hand-in-hand with poverty, students from higher-income families, as well as international students-is something that I not only rate as humbling, but as well as motivationally striking from which exerts empowerment beyond and within oneself. The medial size and scope of the vast amounts of various programs, groups, events, and activities of the campus safe-guards the inherit feeling of being apart of a *community; which in itself being and feeling apart of a community can hold great merit in mind, body, soul/health, and can eventually project through a students academics-because college/academia is a life journey and not a one-stop'n-shop. The amount of resources Eastern Michigan University accommodates the student body with in terms of food, play, ethical discussion group opportunities, amenities, and the diverse selection of classes promotes the financial security and reassurance that is an essential* for current and prospective students and was certainly a factor I took into strong consideration when I applied.

I play video games and draw. I joined three organizations/clubs. I also like to attend many of the events on campus. Other times I hangout with the awesome friends that I made here.

    Food and Dining

The food is decent but you should definitely bring a fridge and have something else every now and then. The food here can be expensive, unless you are on the meal plan. The mini stores on campus are expensive, too.

    Dorm Life

The dorms in the First Year Center are amazing. There are always entertaining events going on in the lounges. The weekends tend to be quiet since most the students who go here are commuters.

    Academic Rigor

You need to attend classes and do your work. As long as you do that, you should pass. Some classes are easy and some are difficult. But each class you take here, you come out having learned much more that you would think possible.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't let the price keep you from going here. Join a club or clubs; it will help you make friends and ensure you have fun so it's not just all work and no play. Don't be afraid to attend a school where you do not know anyone; you'll make friends.

    What to do for fun

There is not anything that exciting close by. Ann Arbor is very close and has a lot of options.

    Food and Dining

Wide variety of options on campus and several off campus dining options. The only down side is that a lot of things close early so if you are up late studying and get hungry, you have to drive to Ann Arbor for late night eats.

    Dorm Life

I lived in family housing for a short time. The complex was newer but still dated. However I just returned to complete my degree and noticed a lot of updates to the the older dorms and also that newer dorms had been built.

    Academic Rigor

There are many options available to students to assist them and help them be as successful as possible. The professors are happy to help those students that show an interest in their education. EMU is not the hardest place nor is it a cake walk. Some professors are easier to understand than others and it also depends on the student.

    Tips for prospective students

Always visit campus if possible before applying. Speak to an advisor, current student & faculty member from your prospective major. Ask to see the freshmen dorms because they will be the lower end of the residential food chain. You only have to stick it out for a year but you want to see if you can tolerate it.

    Bang for the buck

Overall I'd rate this university as much better than I had originally expected. You can get a lot out of it as long as you get yourself involved in campus activities and groups.

    What to do for fun

There are so many fun things to do around campus! Get involved with a club or greek life, your life will never be dull again! There are always people in the gaming room, when it's warm outside you can play basketball and volleyball, and when it's cold enough in winter you can ice skate on the pond! They even rent out skates to people!

    Food and Dining

While there's a lot of yummy food, like pasta, pizza, chicken, chinese food, ice cream, hot sandwiches, and sushi, there aren't really any healthy places that offer things other than salad and the standard orange-banana-or-apple fruit choices.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is always a new experience, everywhere you go. EMU tends to match you up with a good room mate, but not always. Living in the dorms can be challenging because it's not always quiet when you want it to be, but there are always people around for you to hang out with so you're never lonely unless you want to be.

    Academic Rigor

While challenging, you can build relationships with your professors that help and all the professors I've had so far have been willing to meet with me either after class or during office hours to address questions about the material, and the work becomes easy because you know and understand everything!

    Tips for prospective students

Sit in the front row of class. Engage yourself in lectures, participate in discussions, make sure the professor knows your name and that you are a hard worker. The better the relationships you build with the professors, the farther they're willing to go to work with you to understand material and concepts, and give you the knowledge you really need to move forward with success.

    In three sentences

Honestly, it wasn't my first choice in schools, but over time I have come to realize that coming here was a lucky thing for me. EMU cares about student comfort and success more than other universities that my friends are attending. I haven't had a professor yet who didn't understand when I was sick, had an emergency, and work to help me continue towards my goal of working in medicine.

The pond freezes over and they ice skate on it. I guess I also see people always sitting on these vents, especially in the winter because it blows out hot air.

    Bang for the buck

It is particularly inexpensive and they give you a good education.

    What to do for fun

If you have a car Ann Arbor is right down the road, and the buses run Monday through Friday so you can go to Ann Arbor then too. Other than that there is nothing really on campus to do unless it is a campus event (which they have plenty, I am just too busy to go).

    Food and Dining

Many options (especially for vegetarians) but it gets old really fast.

    Dorm Life

No one really talks to each other and it's either too hot or too cold.

    Academic Rigor

Thorough, but not difficult. Easier than high school (and more fun) and way less homework.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't take all academics in one semester. Especially your first semester because you get tired out. Take one academic (such as math, or English) and then take more fun Gen Ed courses (like classes you didn't have in high school).

    In three sentences

It is a commuter school so not many people live on campus. I currently live on campus and will never live on campus again, although I love the school itself. The classes are very thorough yet not completely difficult.

Eastern Michigan in my opinion is a great school but their food is not what i expected. The food makes you miss home, in many aspects. eating the same thing over and over is just not what i expected when i came here.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is really not that bad here. You have a fairly big enough space in your room but the walls are very paper thin. In the winter it can get very cold and in the summer it can get very hot so in my opinion wouldn't stay in the dorms.

    Academic Rigor

Being at Eastern Michigan makes me want to push myself to be all that i can be, because it is very competitive here, especially, for the career that i am pursuing i know what i came here for and i buckled down to do everything that i have to do to succeed.

    Tips for prospective students

When you come to Eastern Michigan make sure you stay focused and you know what you are here for. While partying is what most people think that college is all about that is the last thing on most peoples mind who are here to excel.

    In three sentences

Eastern Michigan University is a great school with teachers who are very willing to help you succeed. They show a great interest in wanting to help and there are many different activities to do here. if you are planning to come to Eastern Michigan you are making a great choice.

    What to do for fun

Ann Arbor is about ten minutes away but there really isn't anything to do on campus or in the area.

    Food and Dining

The food isn't that good and the prices are ridiculous. There aren't a lot of healthy choices and you will gain weight by being on the meal plan.

    Dorm Life

It's in a dangerous neighborhood. There are more people who commute than live on campus so it is completely dead on weekends. There are a lot of nice people.

    What to do for fun

Eastern has their own campus police, and the area is also monitored by Ypsilanti Police, Washtenaw County Police, and Michigan State Police. We also have a program called SeeUs. Students can call if they feel unsafe walking home from nighttime events and classes and get a walking or vehicle escort to their destinations.

    Greek Life

There are a lot of very active fraternities and sororities on campus Some are social, and others have to do with specific majors and interests. I am a Brother of a national honorary fraternity here on campus, and it's been a great learning experience with lots of opportunities to grow.

    Clubs and Activities

Eastern has A TON of clubs and activities. There are clubs for just about every major, social group, and interest imaginable.

Great for these types of students

I think that Eastern is a great place for self-motivated students. Eastern has lots of academic resources available, but it doesn't force students to take advantage of them. The students that I've found to be the most successful are those who choose to work hard, put in extra effort, and use the resources made available to them.

    Bang for the buck

Eastern's tuition prices are very reasonable, and before just recently they hadn't raised rates in about three years. Textbooks and food purchased on campus are generally overpriced.

    What to do for fun

Eastern does a great job of offering lots of things to do on campus. There are movie showings, club meetings, and events going on just about every day.

    Food and Dining

The food is just okay, but there are plenty of places to choose from. There are multiple large dining halls across campus, as well as small cafes in nearly every building that are great for lunch and snacking between classes.

    Dorm Life

The honors college dorms are the best and friendliest around. Some of the other dorms are a little sketchy, though. Once you get past your freshman year, however, there are lots of great student housing options.

    Academic Rigor

Eastern's general education classes are very easy, but don't let that fool you! Once you pick a major and start getting into more advanced classes, Eastern's course load is very challenging.

    Tips for prospective students

My major piece of advice for new students is to get involved in something on campus. Since Eastern is primarily a commuter university, the campus lacks a lot of school spirit and enthusiasm. I found my niche by participating in the marching band. I know that without this activity, I wouldn't be nearly as connected to the school as I find myself today.

    In three sentences

Eastern is a very interesting school. It is one that can enable students to do the minimum amount of work to get by, and it is one that offers a vast wealth of resources that, when utilized, can propel students to a whole new level of learning and success.

There are many points that people can only get in resident life if you live there. There are students part of a safety organization to walk around campus with students who are alone, and help pillars that have an automatic link to the police on campus. Who are regularly present on campus.

    What to do for fun

They have two mini downtown areas, a theatre department with good shows, movies every Friday, and many student organization to keep busy with. The school also makes an effort to have students aware of when sports games/meets are going on.

    Food and Dining

There are a few variety of locations to eat, with a variety of options for those who are vegetarian. The quality of the food is sometimes questionable, but typically there is always something I will eat.

    Dorm Life

The rooms are do-able with fast acting utility workers, with the first year center located near two places to eat, and a mini store to get basic food.

    Academic Rigor

Some classes are not challenging because entry general education courses are still helping one prepare for higher college courses.

    Tips for prospective students

Try to get involved in something, especially clubs that relate to your major, there are many of them. It helps to start networking and know teachers/classes. Also don't take all the easy classes, many people struggle to get out of bed for a class they don't really want to or have to work for. Take a class of interest, and is modernity hard.

    In three sentences

There is a welcoming atmosphere, with staff that care how much books cost, and many student involvement opportunities. A small campus, with many options for food, and security help one to adjust to life in college. Eastern is a school that is an 8 out of 10.

Eastern gets a bad reputation because of the area it's in, but I have never felt threatened. If you stay on campus, and walk with other people at night, you most likely will never have a problem. If you are feeling insecure about your surroundings, Eastern provides SEEUS, a group that provides a walking service to anywhere around or near campus; I use them all the time and they're super friendly.

    Greek Life

I don't know much about Greek life, but i haven't heard anything bad about Greeks here. They're always throwing charity events and campus wide activities. There isn't a huge separation between Greek and Non Greek here like there would be in other schools.

    Clubs and Activities

The clubs on campus are really easy to get involved with, and many times they're run by faculty, making it easy to get informed. I definately suggest getting involved with one, it makes making friends a lot easier. Most clubs and activities here work around your schedule and allow you to be as involved as you want to be, which is great!

Great for these types of students

If you're looking to go into education, come to Eastern, It's one of the best. Eastern is also the best if you're looking to become a little more cultured, or you want to go somewhere that's diverse and accepting of everyone. If you want to feel like you go to a big university, but you want small classes, personal faculty interaction, and a homey feel, come here.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There are several historical locations on campus that pertain to Eastern starting out as a school for teachers. Eastern also has a haunted building, Starkweather. My favorite location on campus is the area in front of the student center with the fountains and ponds; Eastern has one of the prettiest, greenest campuses I've ever seen.

    Bang for the buck

I think that Eastern well exceeds the value it should considering it's price. Any college is expensive, but I really feel like I'm getting more than my money's worth here. Eastern is really good about giving out lots of scholarships too!

    What to do for fun

There's lots to do on campus to entertain yourself. Clubs or other organizations are the best way to get involved and have fun, but campus offers other opportunities such as movie nights or dances as well. All sports events at Eastern are free to students, so If you're into athletics, Eastern is a great place to go.

    Food and Dining

There are several different styles of cafeterias on campus that range from all you can eat buffet style, to food court setup. I think the food here is pretty good despite me being a picky eater. They always have an option for me, and Eastern is great for having healthy options as well as providing vegetarian and vegan choices.

    Dorm Life

The dorms at Eastern are a lot better than most other colleges, they're always renovating. The RA's are super friendly and organize several events to give you opportunities to familiarize yourself with campus and the people at Eastern. Living in the dorms gives you a great opportunity to make friends.

    Academic Rigor

Eastern Is a great academic school. The classes are well formatted, and we have an excellent Honors College. Eastern seems to give a good education for a more affordable price.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are looking to be a student here at EMU, I suggest you apply early. I would look into the program you are interested in, and email some of the professors in that department, they're extremely helpful! Pick one or two clubs to join; they're super fun, and it's an awesome way to meet people!

Great for these types of students

Great for commuter students, great for kids that want to go to a university without feeling lost in a school the size of city.

    Bang for the buck

The tuition is pretty cheap and they offer a lot of scholarships. Most of the food on campus is way over priced. The merchandise and the texts books are way overpriced.

    What to do for fun

For fun I like to go to movies on the weekends and relax. The business of the week makes simply relaxing one of the most fun activities.

    Food and Dining

The food is not very good. There are only two main places to eat and the commons which is the only buffet style does not change its selection throughout the day. The food is usually burn and unappetizing. I end up eating cereal while paying for my three thousand dollar meal plan.

    Dorm Life

Honors dorms are what I live in and they are very nice compared to other colleges equivalent.

    Academic Rigor

Eastern Is middle of the road for difficulty in my opinion.

    Tips for prospective students

Take the hard classes right out of the gate. There is not time to get your feet wet. Focus on your school work and remember that you are there to go to school first, and to have fun second.

    In three sentences

    What to do for fun

Join organizations! Also, there are always things to do on campus.

    Food and Dining

There are some places better than others. The Eastern Eateries is essentially fast food, but the Commons, the Marketplace, and the Student Center have great and healthy dining options :) From all my friends who have visited, they say that Eastern has a larger variety of food.

    Dorm Life

Everyone on Eastern's campus is diverse, everyone has something different to offer. The RAs are amazing. If you're not used to living with people, it can take a while for you to get used to it.

    Academic Rigor

They want you to do your best. With most classes, the coursework isn't particularly difficult, but you do get a lot of work. There are a bunch of tutoring places on campus if you need help. If you are truly struggling and not lazy, the teachers will help you as much as they can.

    Tips for prospective students

Join organizations! You get to meet friends and it can help you with finding a job, depending on the org, or just help you relax at the end of a stressful week! Also, don't be afraid to go to your professor's office hours. Students typically don't go and the worst thing that can go out of going is relearning what you already know. Also, go to class, every day.

A tradition in my family has been the open mic night at the Tap Room bar. Every Thursday from 8-close there is open mic blues jamming. My grandparents were hanging out at the tap room years and years ago so it is special to me. Also they have the best barbecue burger in town.

    Bang for the buck

University of Michigan quality professors at an EMU price. The college is also upgrading many infrastructure issues such as building a brand new student center and adding additions to buildings and revamping old ones. The music department is also getting more Steinway pianos (the best pianos available).

    What to do for fun

Mountain biking, hiking, and swimming at nearby Pinckney State Recreation Area. Concerts at Woodruff's, the Tap Room, many venues in Ann Arbor (the Ark, Michigan Theatre, Melange, Connor O'neil's, the Blind Pig). Laser Tag and Rave Cinemas on Carpenter road.

    Food and Dining

On campus options are ok, dining commons and fast food. There is much better food in nearby Ypsilanti. Blue Wolf Grill, Maiz cantina, the Bomber, Tap Room, Red Rock Barbecue, Bona Sera, Beezy's, B-24's, Abe's, and Mr. Pizza.

    Dorm Life

Never lived in the dorms, but I spent some time there. There were activities in various dorm common areas. Probably better to get an apartment, certainly in junior or senior year.

    Academic Rigor

The professors here are surprisingly good, a lot of them teach at neighboring University of Michigan where students pay many times the tuition. The basic classes are just that, basic. The upper level classes will be quite challenging.

Go to Downtown Ypsilanti, Depot Town or Downtown Ann Arbor for cute little stores, cafes, or just a little bit of getting away from campus for a few hours.

    What to do for fun

Join clubs(groups), parties, and dorm activities. RA's put together fun activities so that even if you don't join clubs or party, you can still get out there and meet people.

    Food and Dining

The food is good. The menu never changes though. It gets old really fast.

    Dorm Life

You might have loud suitemates (people you share bathroom with, next door to you), You might have a loud hall in general. Take that up with your RA. The dorms are small, but not cramped unless you overpack. Hot in the summer. NO AC, so bring a fan or 2. Heat in the winter can be too warm.

    Academic Rigor

This isn't the hardest college, it is pretty simple. They make it quite easy to graduate here. Just do the work, go to class on time, and participate. Most teachers put the notes online for you and some classes have you take exams, tests, and quizzes online. It's a breeze, just don't think it's a blow off school. You still have to give some kind of effort.

    Tips for prospective students

Beware who you befriend. Leave dorm about 30-15minutes prior to the start of class If there is a problem with you getting to class, e-mail teachers and classmates for notes. Don't over pack for your dorm. They are small. Join groups. It'll be less boring here.

    In three sentences

The food here is pretty decent, but the menu hardly ever changes and you get tired of it very fast. Tips for prospective students

First of all, be yourself. People accept you for who you are here, which is really cool. Also, get involved in a group or activity on campus. You'll make more friends and it's just really cool to fit in and do something. AND GO TO CLASS!

    In three sentences

Eastern Michigan University isn't judgmental to anyone, we accept all different kinds of people with open arms. We have a beautiful campus that is always full of commotion. When you hear people say professors don't care, that's not true: At EMU, I've met some of the most understanding, caring and wonderful professors.

    Campus Safety

It's fine to be there during the day, but get the hell out of there before it gets dark. The school claims their Night-watch service is an effective safety measure, but night-watch is more like might-watch. They only come when its convenient to them, and they do not 'patrol' campus looking for people to help, they stroll dazed and ignorant, and can be found relaxing in the lounges.

    Greek Life

I'm personally not in any of the fraternities or sororities. I applied to get into one, but you have to pay at least $300 extra a month to be associated with one.

    Clubs and Activities

As I said before, there are many things to do around campus, but I don't have time for any of them since I just finished taking 5 classes, and working two jobs.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for parents trying to get their degree after had been out of school for several years, and know how to take advantage of the system. It is also great for people who want to see college as 13th grade, and not an experience.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is a fallic shaped historic water tower everyone calls The Big Brick Dick.

    Bang for the buck

If you can get into a better school, go there.

    What to do for fun

There are many activities to do around campus, but you will be so busy with classes, and work you won't have time for any of them, unless you are one of the 'special' ones who choke on the silver spoon they were born with in their mouth and can afford to go to school without working. The LGBT program has a lot of sway around campus, and so does the women's and gender study group.

    Food and Dining

Everything is overpriced and under-sanitary. 16 oz sodas cost about two dollars each, and the cafeteria food is disgusting. I've gotten food poisoning twice, and I've found bugs crawling around in the food the last two times I went to the commons.

    Dorm Life

Its expensive as hell, the dorms are small and nasty, and you will end up sharing a closet sized room with another person, and an even smaller bathroom with three other people.

    Academic Rigor

All the classes are a royal pain in the neck, especially the morning ones. The professors own you and your future, and they know it. You will meet their expectations, and do things their way, or else. You can work your behind off, and still get nowhere, but that's academia, and the professors will exploit the hell out of it.

    Tips for prospective students

The only reason you should go to Eastern is if you are a business, or finance major. As a Film Studies Major I have learned absolutely nothing. I've learned more about film by watching internet film reviews. If you are trying to get into the nursing program, be prepared to wait at least two to three years before they finally get off their lazy asses and view your application.

    In three sentences

Let me tell you what I think of EMU. In the past three semester I have lost 3 scholarships because of over population of the student body, I can never find a parking spot, and I have to watch where I step at all times because there is goose feces everywhere. Only go to Eastern if it is your last resort.

    Campus Safety

There are constant alerts in the mailing system about how someone was shot in a nearby city. Granted, Ypsilanti isn't the safest place, but I'd like to comfortably walk across campus without guys in yellow next to me. The girl's murder this year gives me the creeps too, even if that wasn't on campus.

    Greek Life

Don't do it. Save your money. It's a cult.

    Clubs and Activities

I will repeat, I am the president of Coup De Gras, and we are trying hard for new members. Besides us though (even including us if you want) the one thing the student clubs have going for them is the variety--you can find clubs for next to everything. And even if you can't (But you will in the directory of 300 something clubs) you could always make new ones.

Great for these types of students

It's great for run of the mill students, who want to get an average degree and an average life. There's nothing terribly special besides their business program, and even then I haven't heard stellar reviews about that from anyone that isn't Eastern. On the other hand, I do say that you could do worse, like Baker.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The Brick Dick might be one of the more unusual locations on campus. As for unusual traditions, there's always something going on in front of the eateries. As for whether or not either might be entertaining, neither suit my fancy.

    Bang for the buck

I feel like I'm constantly being ripped off here, since the school seems to love slapping on fee after fee for the most mundane of bullshit, but it could be worse. I just wish that you got more for your money. After all, if I'm paying for it, I might as well get something other than regret and a bachelor's in creative writing.

    What to do for fun

I would say Join a club but that's lame, and the only people who usually join clubs are the ones who actually would join a club anyway. I am president of Coup De Gras though, and we try to keep things fresh on a weekly basis, so you should join that for some fun!

    Food and Dining

It doesn't matter what you pick, it gets tiring after a while. Commons has some variety, or it should--but doesn't always. Eateries is usually a bust; the food there made me sick a lot my first year here.

    Dorm Life

I would have given Dorm Life a lower score, but it's so lovably chaotic, and I had a good year here. First year, the people in my wing (who I inevitably befriended) were a bunch of druggies and sex addicts, and my life/schoolwork suffered dramatically. This year, I got a better dorm (Hoyt) and I've made friends with some awesome people.

    Academic Rigor

The school tries to push academic policies but it's really on a teacher to teacher basis. Sometimes passing a class comes down to whether or not the teacher is on top of things. Overall the work isn't hard, but the teachers tend to complicate matters.

    Tips for prospective students

Well, watch what you do as you come in here, and what programs you join. The NSOA's are usually hand picked from the peppiest and overachieverest students among the school, so they'll wind up giving you a different vibe than the school actually is. Also, learn the computer system early.

    In three sentences

It's alright, a little less than what I expected. My classes have been tolerable, but there have been a few stinkers. Also, their school system is terrible.

Eastern is great for you if you like to get out and have a good time. What to do for fun

Studying makes time go slower but partying presses time forward leaving little time for academics. Leaving the campus for a little shopping therapy at the near by mall always helps me to unwind after a week of hard core working.

    Food and Dining

Lets be honest, to much of the same thing will annoy anyone. But on the bright side if your a french fry and mustered dipping, ice cream licking, pizza and ranch eating freak like myself you'll love the dining services of Eastern Michigan University.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are a great place for you if you like lots of company and don't care of for much of your own privacy. Threw the halls of the dorms is where you will build most of your life long friendships.

    Academic Rigor

The academic area of Eastern reminds me much of my years in high school; the only difference is that its up to you to make things happen. The days of holding hands and getting help with everything that seems to be a challenge is over. Stay focused and the rest shall come easy to you.

    Tips for prospective students

Stay focused and remember that not everything is for everyone. Only put on your plate, what you know you can handle. Not everyone is there to be your friend; becoming independent will help you in many different ways. Once you plan something stick to it, finish, and then maybe change your course of direction!

    In three sentences

The number one thing I do for fun is go to the rec. I either workout or play volleyball, basketball or air hockey with my friends. It's a great place to meet new people and have a great time at the same time. That's where I met most of my friends.

    Food and Dining

College food is college food. Most students eat out anyway but the food is fine.

    Dorm Life

The dorm I stayed in my freshman year was Sellers Hall which was the most fun and exciting hall within the 3 other halls. The rooming is something you have to get comfortable with because you do share a room with one other person and a bathroom with three other people. But the Co-ed dorms are the best and more fun.

    Academic Rigor

This is a more free-spirited college but there is academic probation but in college you should always have an academic rigor on yourself if you want to be successful.

    Tips for prospective students

Eastern is a great school for students that do not know what they want to do yet, students that are unsure what they want to go into and students that know exactly what they want to do. I would apply here if I was you.

Campus officers both walk and drive around campus. Most of the ones I've met are so friendly and will even walk you to where your going on campus if it's late or if you just ask. We have a program called See Us that starts around 4pm in the fall and winter. You can call or they may already be standing out side of some of the major building that students are in ( student center, library, dorms, etc.) to walk you any where on campus or to campus limits!. You have to tell them your student ID number and name they report that information to the police station and then walk to where you need to go safely!

    What to do for fun

I love just walking around campus looking at all the old building. But campus life is live you just have to figure out where you fit it. Down town Ypsilanti is live on some night, I like going out on Thursdays which is student night at most places.
