    Campus Safety

VCOM is located in the Research area of Virginia Tech's campus. So, it's about a 2-mile walk to the main area of the campus and wasn't involved in previous incidents, as far as I know.

    Greek Life

    Clubs.

    Clubs and Activities

LOTS of clubs!!! Sports Medicine, OB/GYN, Surgery, etc.

Great for these types of students

This school has a strong General Practice and Missions Medicine leaning. Example: You'll be taught how to diagnose disease both in a top-notch hospital and in a remote area clinic with very little supplies.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

    Heavy on Hokie pride!!!

    Bang for the buck

Use of almost all Virginia Tech facilities and the public bus system are included in your VCOM tuition. The cadaver lab is amazing and the student:cadaver ratio is 5 or 6:1 with 6 or so physicians circulating in the lab to help you learn your way around. The library has several copies of every textbook on the book list, in case you don't buy all of the books.

    What to do for fun

Plenty of outdoor activities - Hiking, kayaking, fishing, etc.

    Food and Dining

There are a few fine-dining places in Blacksburg, but mostly a lot of college-town eating.

    Dorm Life

No dorms. Plenty of apartment complexes and town homes. Some live within walking distance to campus, some live 1 town over (5 minute drive). Public bus system is excellent and is included in your tuition. Tough to find much in Blacksburg for less than $1K per month, but Christiansburg is much more affordable. And, roommates are plentiful.

    Academic Rigor

Med School is NO JOKE!!! You will HAVE to learn new ways to study, because it just isn't the same type of studying as undergrad. There is, however, time to have fun and stay/get fit. But, you DO have to intentionally schedule it and manage your time well.

    Tips for prospective students

This school really does look at more than just your scores. Make your Personal Statement as accurate and thorough as possible. If you get an interview, BE YOURSELF!

    In three sentences

The facilities are excellent (including a state-of-the-art cadaver lab on the third floor with a beautiful view of the mountains). The faculty and staff are clearly interested in our success both as students and as future physicians. The two didactic years (First two years) are organized in 8 blocks: 1 Foundations block, 6 Organ System blocks, and 1 Board Review block.

GET INVOLVED! It'll make your time here much more fun and enjoyable

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Some fun places off campus in Blacksburg: The Cellar, Top of the Stairs (TOTS), Sharkey's There is a great Mexican restaurant in Christiansburg called El Gran Rodeo

    Bang for the buck

All medical schools will be expensive and every student will take out at least one loan, it's inevitable. It is what you make of your experience that will make spending all that money worthwhile.

    What to do for fun

Hiking, tubing in the river, bars, movies, mall, BBQ, other shopping, gyms, etc.

    Food and Dining

Tons of local spots and chains in Blacksburg and Christiansburg.

    Dorm Life

There are no dorms, but plenty of housing options in Blacksburg and Christiansburg.

    Academic Rigor

It's medical school, it's supposed to be hard. Just find friends who are just as determined as you are and set up study groups. You will get through it just like everyone else.

    Tips for prospective students

Even if you feel like the underdog, APPLY! They root for the underdog as long as you are willing to give them a reason to. Don't listen to people who say medical school is too hard/impossible, anything is possible if you want it bad enough.

    In three sentences

The campus is absolutely beautiful! The professors and admissions staff are so welcoming, it makes you feel as if you belong there. The students, even though buried in their studies, still take the time to be polite and add to the welcoming feel.
