Categories Comments Great for these types of students Artists (young and older), artists who desire guidance, dreamers, entrepreneurs of the Arts, art historians, preservers, fast workers, artists with a keen eye for detail, artists with a fresh style, artists who seek their own or want to pursue traditional styles
Tips for prospective students Be serious about what you want to be in the Arts. You may want to consider (when thinking about major/minors) if this will get you an actual job or not. None of us want to be (for example) freelancing and tragically earn low income from our work, only to resort to commercial jobs we don't like in the future. Talk to the counselor about your desired major and your plans for the future. It'll all be worth it. Also, work fast! Kendall is easy going but you still need to keep up on assignments!
Bang for the buck Though the classes are enjoyable and the atmosphere is awesome, the tuition is expensive. 12,000+ dollars is estimated for each year. Keep up with tuition bills and talk to the counselors frequently to check balances, pick the correct classes, etc.
Am enjoying being here The student life includes holiday parties (like the upcoming Halloween party, complete with costume contest) and active participation in art exhibitions, internal and external (i.e. Art Prize of Grand Rapids). Kendall is big on student works being displayed and has them frequently displayed in the halls. We all get our equal share of attention.
Am learning a lot I am currently enrolled at Kendall (Ferris affiliate) and I find that the art studio and elective classes are very thorough and challenging. The professors are enjoyable, the atmosphere is non-competitive and the student life enjoyable and fun. Warning: Classes are very strict on deadlines, so keep on your toes! Freshmen Classes may seem repetitive if you took similar in high school but take them anyway! Very refreshing and informative.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Country and small town students.
Tips for prospective students Research classes and know the classes you need. Otherwise you will be enrolled in classes you don't need because of course they want more money and for you to stay here longer.
Bang for the buck Expensive, but cheaper than most.
Am enjoying being here Love the country aspect and small town feel!!!
Am learning a lot Professors are helpful if you ask for help. Also, find a lot of studying time to learn the most information.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students This school is best for students who like a quiet close and friendly environment. Who want the great education along with great teachers who learn you as a person.
Tips for prospective students The best way to know if a school is right for you is to visit the school and if possible spend the night there. Just because it is right for me doesn't make it right for you.
Bang for the buck Your money is well spent here. There are lots of free events on campus, lots of organizations and sports teams and even a great recreation and fitness center.
Am enjoying being here The school is located in a quiet friendly small town. This leaves you with less distractions from your school objectives. There are still plenty of fun things you can find. This school never has a dull moment.
Am learning a lot This teachers make every class room a friendly place. The know you by name, which is unlikely to happen at other universities. The information they teach is challenging, but they give you many options to succeed including office hours and free tutoring centers and writing centers

Am enjoying being here FSU offers many extracurricular activities. Great town with friendly people.
Am learning a lot FSU offers great support for its students. My personal experience with the writing center has helped me maintain A's in my classes. My professors are always available for questions.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Ferris is good for students that want a big school, but not an overwhelming huge one. You see the same people all the time so you get to know everyone really well.
Tips for prospective students Go to class is the number one thing. If you don't, you'll get behind because the tests are based off the lectures.
Bang for the buck It is somewhat expensive, but in my mind it's worth it because I love it.
Am enjoying being here I absolutely love it at Ferris. It is a small town, but there is always a lot going on so it is easy to get involved with things.
Am learning a lot I am currently a freshman so I am in general education classes right now. Most of the stuff is just a review from high school right now so it's really easy.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you're looking for a place where you can actually find a relationship with your fellow students and your professors, a place to experience every season to its fullest, and where you never know what you're going to see next, come to Ferris State University.
Tips for prospective students Visit before you decide between Ferris and another school. There is a certain charm to this place you can only find with your eyes. It's what sold me!
Am enjoying being here This campus in unlike many others in that it is so centered. You can find everything fairly easily and no walk is more than fifteen minutes. The atmosphere always edges on excitement and someone is constantly there if you need a smile.
Am learning a lot You get a lot of professors who adore their subject matter. In my opinion, there is no better way to learn than from those who are passionate about what they teach.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you like being part of a friendly and welcoming environment then Ferris is the place for you. The people here are great! Also if you want to be able to say that you graduated in one of the most unrecognized, great universities in the country then come here.
Tips for prospective students If you are looking to attend Ferris State I highly recommend it. To me it was one of the best decisions of my life. At no point have i regretted making the decision and it only keeps getting better.
Bang for the buck Ferris State has very reasonable cost of attending. It is not as cheap as most community colleges but at the same time is one of the least expensive universities around Michigan.
Am enjoying being here Ferris State offers many different registered student organizations. So no matter what your interest are there is bound to be one that fits your liking.
Am learning a lot Ferris State University has been teaching students every semester for over 100 years. Over this time they have a lot of practice in teaching and improving their curriculum. It shows every day when I step into that class room and come out of it with more knowledge then I had before I went in.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students It's great for self-motivated people and people who need a little push in the right direction. It's best for people who want to get involved but involvement isn't mandatory. Pretty much any type of student will benefit from attending. Oh just be careful if you're coming in from a urban area because the small town atmosphere might give you culture shock.
Tips for prospective students First of all realize that not all professors are the same. If you decide to go to Ferris or any other school just remember that some professors have different teaching styles. For example, Professor Jones might be a lecture-only professor and Professor Smith might be a read on your own kind of a professor. If notes and sitting through lectures are your strong points Professor Jones might be the way to go. If you don't have strong reading skills you might want to opt out of taking Professor Smith, ect. Also make sure to pick a residence hall that isn't too far away from your classes. If you're taking only classes at the business building and you're a business management major than a residence hall by the business building might be a good idea for you.
Bang for the buck For a public, four-year university Ferris is definitely cost effective. They have all-you-can-eat meal plans and you just have to decide if you just want to be fed on the weekdays (perfect for students who live in the area and go home ever weekend) or 7 days a week. The financial aid is pretty extensive too and they help you apply for scholarships too!
Am enjoying being here I love Ferris. Though at first I was a little skeptical because of the size and location I've grown really attached to Ferris. It might not be University of Michigan size or have the more urban location of Western Michigan but I love it. It's got a very small town feeling. The professors are generally nice and understanding, the other faculty members know what they're doing (when you call with a question they don't connect you to several other offices, they answer your questions and if they don't know the answer they'll find it out for you) and there are plenty of student organizations to get involved with. Last year I was involved with Habitat for Humanity and this year I'm going an organization for future health care administrators and am an executive board member of the Up 'til Dawn organization (an organization that raises money for St. Jude's Pediatric Hospital). Whether you want to be involved or just focus on your studies Ferris really is great for either. Also they have community events like the Big Event, which is a school-wide community service event or Ferris Fest, a big concert at the end of the year. This spring at Ferris Fest Sean Kingston was our headliner!
Am learning a lot Ferris' curriculum is generally pretty straight forward. Right now I'm a Sophomore Health Care Systems Administration major and though I changed my major last semester I'm still finding that the general education classes I had to take are pretty helpful even if they aren't geared towards health care professionals.

Categories Comments Clubs and Activities There's always something to do, from Poker to Basketball.
Great for these types of students Anyone
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Going tubing down the Muskegon River!! Always a plus and a fun trip with friends.
Bang for the buck The cost of attending is expensive, but if you're in the program you know you're going to get a job in, the staff here is really good at what they do and are helping prepare you for the working world.
What to do for fun Work out at the Rec, go to the movies, there's always something to do on campus from campus events like Autumn Alive or going to a Division 2 game, or Division 1 Hockey game.
Food and Dining The Rock is the best place to eat on campus, but FSU is downtown in Big Rapids and most of the restaurants are in walking distance.
Dorm Life Dorm rooms are small, but if you're in the Honor's Dorm then you get a room to yourself, which isn't bad.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you know what degree you're interested in before going in. Maybe take your generics at a community college or online to save money.
In three sentences Ferris State University is a great University to attend. The cost is quite expensive, but the education level is outstanding and most of the teachers are friendly and are always looking to help you succeed.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Students who enjoy a small town setting. A fish in a middle size pool. Students who want to make a noticeable impression on a community.
Tips for prospective students Your walking into the freshest experience of your life in college. This is the time where you can define who you want to be. It is a reset button, on your image, where if you want to be that popular kid you can do it. If you want to be that person with a close group of friends, you can do it. You can do whatever you WANT. Just think that decision through. At Ferris, I'm having fun learning and building my knowledge of life. You can do it here to. And if you decide to come try out the life in Big Rapids in the next 6 years, i hope to see you.
Bang for the buck Price is not up to par, with the legacy this institution has. But it is pretty good, if you have a high ACT score or high gpa. You will get scholarships. Ferris willl prepare you for the field your going into, if you come here and have done your research into a particular field that has potential job growth and ferris offers the program. Ferris has the connections to get you prepared.
Am enjoying being here I absolutely love being in Big Rapids, but how you perceive it might be completely different. First of all, since this is Big Rapids you are NOT going to be surrounded by a metropolis of things to do. Big rapids is bland outside of the university. BUT the people make up for it. Though many people leave on the weekend. And I mean prolly 50% leave for the weekend out of 7,500 kids. There is stuff to do. Parties at the frats, house parties, and shooters. IF you make friends here your going to have fun, simply said. Your going to be an 18 year old kid living away from your parents. That scenario on its own, brings fun. Add to that a group of friends who want to enjoy these years too. You cannot go wrong.
Am learning a lot This is not high school. Do not assume that since this is Ferris State your going to have an easy road that is not the case. You are expected to do college level work, and the only way to do college work is to study. Study and get help from teachers, tutors, or fellow classmates. If you want to succeed here you have to put time in the classroom and library.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students For those who want to meet people in their desired career directly and those who want to get involved in school activities.
Tips for prospective students Get involved in student groups that interest you. If you don't know what kind of groups there are, just ask your advisor, they will more than likely be willing to help you find something.
Bang for the buck Small classes, easy to ask questions if you need them, nice area, pretty good food.
Am enjoying being here The school is nice and really easy to know where you're going with many helpful staff members.
Am learning a lot Some classes aren't all that exciting you still learn a decent amount. Though I am learning a lot from all the extra activities I do at the school such as getting involved in student organizations and the theatre.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Laid-back students looking to relax when not in class, students who like small quiet towns, students that are highly motivated and take their class work seriously.
Tips for prospective students If you want a busy city with a lot of night life, Ferris probably isn't your school. However, if you grew up in a smaller town and want to keep it that way this college is the best. It's not too busy or crowded, but there's still enough to keep you busy.
Bang for the buck Dorms, classrooms, and dining areas are all pretty nice. Dorm rooms are a little outdated in some areas of campus, but the newly renovated class buildings and dining area makes up for it.
Am enjoying being here Ferris is in Big Rapids, a small close-knit community where teachers know you by name. While the town isn't very big the friends you make provide more than enough enjoyment.
Am learning a lot Teachers are very helpful and offer many ways for students to learn and absorb the discussed material.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students For students going into Plastics, Pharmacy, and Automotive school this is a great place to be. However, if like myself you are enrolled in less well known college, English in my case, then you may not be really getting what you want. I find it difficult to get the classes I need at this college, but then again only 2-3 people graduate from my specific program each year.
Bang for the buck I'm doing great for funding but I have a few advantages; 1. My father works here and as a result I get 8 free credits a semester 2. I work for Housing and Residence Life which gives me free room and board as well as providing me a job and a little extra money towards classes. 3. I qualified upon entrance to receive the Dean's scholarship which also helps pay for my tuition With just these three things alone I only pay about $100 a semester. Dean's has a limited life, and mine is about to run out, but it is well worth looking into what scholarships the University will offer you.
Am enjoying being here Being that I've lived in this town since I was 7 years old I have become used to this place. It's a small community, but I'm hoping to get out of here once I graduate.

Bang for the buck The price I am going to be paying includes so many different things.

Tips for prospective students Visit campus first to get a feel of the place.
Bang for the buck There are less expensive colleges, but Ferris isn't too bad. The biggest cost other than tuition is room and board.
Am enjoying being here The area around Ferris is very rural, so if you like the city life, you might want to look at another college. If you like the small town feel, however, Ferris is the place for you.
Am learning a lot There are a lot of great professors here at Ferris. I especially enjoy my economics teacher. Many of the professors have been teaching for a while, so they are quite experienced.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Restaurants are pretty much what dominates the city. There is a small movie theater, bar/club, and a bowling alley. There's lots of student organizations here so get involved with them and you'll find yourself busy with activities.
Food and Dining I've been shockingly surprised with how good the food is. Lots of variety and generally tastes good.
Dorm Life I live in an honors hall and people are respectful and considerate. I haven't had any problems thus far.
Academic Rigor I feel it's what I expected in college. What you put in will be reflected by your grade. Professors are pretty straight forward and out there to help you.
Tips for prospective students Apply for honors! It's nice having your own room and getting priority registration for classes. Their financial aid department is great and really work with you to make sure you can pay for school.
In three sentences The university is very clean and a small campus. Not very diverse, predominantly white. There isn't a whole lot going on, but you find things to do.

Categories Comments Campus Safety campus safety is very good in my opinion. there's always ferris state police somewhere to help. if you have late classes and it's dark, there are emergency callers all around campus. some spots on campus aren't very well-covered, but i imagine they soon will be.
What to do for fun keep in mind, big rapids isn't a large town like grand rapids or anything, but there is bowling, dancing, university recreational center, and various concerts throughout the year. last year ferris held a rave and it was the most fun i've ever had!
Food and Dining there are so many good places to eat in big rapids! they are all just walks away. the campus diners that i went to are very good and they have a wide variety of food selections. there is west view on one side of the campus and the rock on the other side. my personal favorite is the rock because it's newer and has a lot more food.
Dorm Life from what i hear, most people enjoy living in the dorms. i can't say too much, however, because i am a commuter.
Academic Rigor like all schools, the rigor all depends on which professor you take. the professors i have had are very good, for the most part. they aren't looking for hand-out type of students. you get out of the classes what you put forth and i can honestly say that i haven't came out of any classes that i didn't retain information from.
Tips for prospective students don't be a hermit when you attend ferris. there are tons of activities for all students free of charge year-round. if you just hang out in your room and go to classes, you'll miss the opportunity of having fun and meeting people you could potentially become friends for life with.
In three sentences ferris allowed me to jump right into my major my second semester of attendance. i really like that ferris' advisors are active in our education. i meet with mine every semester to ensure i'm on the right track.

Food and Dining the rock. always go there it's amazing. westview is more like middle school cafeteria
Dorm Life it's only two rooms to a bathroom so if you need privacy you have it
Academic Rigor in the college of technology and 80% is a c so to get an a your average has to be 95% or above but they grade so hard your gpa is sure to suffer well except if you're a spunky girl.
Tips for prospective students study hard and long, don't let your work get ahead of you, have fun

Categories Comments What to do for fun You can go rockclimbing, work out, hang out in the gym, or if you are willing to walk into town (only 10 to 15 min.) then you can also go rollerskatig, bowling, and who knows what else. You can also play cards or whatever in the lobby of the dorms.
Food and Dining This is the best college ood I have ever had. The Rock is delicious, and the meal plans are unlimited.
Dorm Life I spent the night and loved it. The people where really fun and it was all open and friendly. Also the rooms are reasonably sized for 2 people.
Academic Rigor I think it sort of depends on you and how much you try as well as what program you are going into. When I was there, there was a lot of seminars and stuff going on.
Tips for prospective students The parking and roads are kind of confusing. I wouldn't bring your car the first year at least. Also, be aware that the doorms are co-ed. But, if you are in the honnors program, you get your own room.
In three sentences This is a great school if you are looking for outcomes. They get you places in your life. However, initiative is key, they aren't going to babysit you.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is pretty good on campus. Cops are always patrolling the campus.
Clubs and Activities There are many on campus clubs and activities to fit everybody's interests. Currently i'm part of the Biotech club and the American Chemical Society.
Bang for the buck For the price I pay to live in Big Rapids and to attend Ferris State University I wish the town had more to do.
What to do for fun There are plenty of things to do for fun. In town there is a little roller rink and a bowling alley. There are plenty of places to grab a bite to eat with friends like Applebees. Right down the road from campus there is a golf course. One of the most fun things to do in town is to go tubing.
Food and Dining The food and dining is pretty good in Big Rapids. There are three big places on campus to eat which are The Rock, Westview, and Quiznos. If you don't like any of these places there are also all the off campus places like Burger King and Little Caesars.
Dorm Life I've never personally lived in the dorm. I was a transfer student so I was automatically allowed to live in the on campus apartments. I've been in friends dorms and they are pretty small. You know a few people in your hall and maybe more if you decide to hangout in the lobby and meet new people. People are less interactive in the honors dorms.
Academic Rigor The academic rigor for my majors is pretty intense. I chose Biotechnology as one of my majors which happens to be the hardest major that Ferris has due to the fact that I have to take every upper level science class that the school has to offer. I'm always studying or doing homework 5 or 6 days a week.
Tips for prospective students Do your research and make sure the college has your program. Don't choose this school just because your friends go here. Get to know your teachers on a first name basis so when it comes time to need a recommendation letter for either grad school or internships they will know who you are.
In three sentences Ferris State University is a great educational institution. You get a lot of hands on experience and the athletics have the whole community behind them regardless of a win or lose. It's a very tight knit community and the class size is small so you get to know the teachers on a first name basis.

Tips for prospective students Be serious about your school work and don't be afraid to ask for help.

Categories Comments Greek Life Joining a fraternity or a sorority will be one of the best decisions of your life. They will teach you how to be a better person and teach you how to build yourself for the future.
Bang for the buck The University is priced well for a University.
What to do for fun You can participate in many intramural sports or join a fraternity/ sorority.
Food and Dining The Rock Cafe is the best place to eat on campus. It is a buffet style restaurant and includes many different types of food. The food is great for a couple of weeks and then gets old after eating there everyday.
Dorm Life Life in the dorms is very great if you are a friendly person. Your resident advisers will be friendly and help you with any problems you have. The dorms are very small though and sometimes uncomfortable.
Academic Rigor The academics at FSU are not very rigorous. They are just like any other college level class. You will have work to do but it is obtainable and will teach you very valuable lessons about time management.
Tips for prospective students Do not get stuck with 8 am classes, you will regret it. Drinking is not more important than your grades, you are here to get an education not drink your life away.
In three sentences Ferris State University has the perfect sized campus. It's faculty is great and are interested in your improvement. You will be successful at Ferris State University.

Categories Comments Food and Dining There are two dining cafes at Ferris. The first is the Rock Cafe and the other is Westview Dining. Having the chance to work at both of the facilities, I greatly appreciate the work that is put into a days job of making others happy.
Dorm Life Currently getting hired as a Resident Assistant I have come to learn to fully understand how the university life influences others. I the resident halls we are a family. Each floor is called a house because the friendships that are made will truly last a lifetime.
Academic Rigor Ferris is a small town school that anyone can fit in. The courses are small enough so each student can get personal attention if needed and many opportunities for success are provided for free such as tutoring. At Ferris anything is possible if you set your mind to it.

Food and Dining The Rock is awesome, they have amazing food!
Dorm Life I love living in the dorms, you meet a lot of people and that is how you make most of your friends.
Academic Rigor Its not that hard if you spend time studying. You dont' always have to study alone though, there are plenty of places you and your classmates can go to study together.
Tips for prospective students Tour the campus before the first day.
In three sentences I enjoy going to Ferris. All my classes are close together and it is easy for me to find where I am going because the campus is small. The professors there are willing to help you and are friendly.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus Safety is very important. Ferris has poles all around the campus for emergency calls, and at night there are people on parole to help out as well.
Great for these types of students There are many options for students on campus when picking a career. Ferris has a great medical, pharmacy and criminal justice program.
Bang for the buck Personally, I love Ferris and all it has to offer. It is definitely worth the money spent for the experience provided.
What to do for fun Thee are so many things to do for fun at Ferris. Sporting events are just an option, there are many activities that go on at the student Rec Center, such as club and sports. The college also puts on activities such as Ferris Fest.
Food and Dining The Rock and Westview have a variety of different foods, and selections. There is never a reason to go hungry, and the atmosphere is inviting and welcoming.
Dorm Life Although it is small, it is a warm and inviting atmosphere. There is always things going on in the dorms. You meet a lot of new people.
Academic Rigor It takes hard work, but Flite is a wonderful place to get homework done and there is always people willing to help with your studies. There are also programs such as SLA that are offered to the students for extra help.
Tips for prospective students A tip for prospective students is to keep your mind open and go out and meet new people.
In three sentences Ferris State University is a well organized college, full of helpful professors. I love it there and the food and dinning is also wonderful. This university has a friendly atmosphere.

Categories Comments Clubs and Activities Tons of registered student organizations and student involvement means that the community outreach is a huge part of student life on campus.
Bang for the buck There are many winnable academic and service scholarships available.
What to do for fun Big Rapids is a pretty small community but there is a movie theater, some shopping, and of course the river where tubing adventures await! And if you get cabin fever, Grand Rapids is only an hour away. The only down-side: it is not too close to a beach on Lake Michigan.
Dorm Life Also, if you are in the Honors Program, you get your own room! I would highly recommend it since it makes studying easier and alleviates stress about roommate tension.
In three sentences Ferris is a great size for anyone who is interested in attending a state university but not thrilled on the prospect of hiking all over campus just to attend classes. It has lots of student organizations on campus that keep you involved and helping the community, while the Honors program is excellent for helping you plan your academic career and graduate with the best prospects.

Categories Comments Campus Safety With the blue lights everywhere, I never feel unsafe on campus.
Greek Life I recently joined a co-ed fraternity and I have no grudges against any Greek group. Some of the fraternities have bad ideas tied to them, but they are quick to deny them.
Clubs and Activities There's a healthy amount of stuff to do here. All groups I was ever in were small, and rather tight knit. If you got to be part of the group that was great and you made lots of friends, but if you weren't, it was easy to feel excluded.
Great for these types of students Isn't as interested in a liberal arts education, but wants to learn mostly about their career of choice. There are DEFINITELY opportunities for learning outside your career field, it's just not as forced down your throat as I see in other schools.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Rock has a rock you can paint... but that may be about it.
Bang for the buck The meal plan is a bit outrageous, but I know they are changing that a lot. Dorms are not bad, and tuition is great for a state university.
What to do for fun Not Shooters. Despite what your parents may say if they are Michigan natives, Ferris is NOT as much of a party school as it was in the past. However, if you looked hard enough, you could find a party nearly every weekend. Definitely not a shortage of those.
Food and Dining Only 2 dining halls and I got sick of them before the end of the year. They are changing a lot though! Hopefully for the better
Dorm Life I was in an Honors dorm, and had a single room and shared a bathroom with 1 other person, but dorms are fairly simple. Nothing awful, but nothing great.
Academic Rigor I've been challenged in challenging classes and not in non-challenging ones. Of course, there are exceptions, but not every professor is perfect.
Tips for prospective students Get a basic meal plan. You don't need $300 bulldog bucks. Don't go to Shooters. It's a waste of money and time.
In three sentences An open, smaller state university that is rather cheap. You get what you pay for, no bells and whistles. You go in, get an education and get a job.

Categories Comments What to do for fun The campus offered man events to go to that broke up the monotony. The surrounding area, as well, offered several restaurants and attractions to make college life enjoyable.
Food and Dining The food was superb. The cafeteria I went to the most was the Rock Cafe and the food there was almost home cooked quality. With several healthy options, there was something for everyone.
Dorm Life I loved my time in the dorms and can not wait to get back. As a member of the honors college I had a single room which made adjusting much easier. The residence assistants and staff were kind and helpful as well.
Academic Rigor The classes definitely challenge you. As long as you do your work though they're not impossible.
Tips for prospective students Relax and enjoy your time there. As long as you give it your all, you will do just fine and have fun.
In three sentences Ferris State is an excellent place to learn. The teachers are wonderful and attentive. Overall I felt that I received a quality education there.

Food and Dining Meal plans are available for students who wish to purchase them, although I'm still debating whether or not I'll be able to get one. Tons of restaurants on campus as well as a cafe in one of the buildings.
Dorm Life I am currently planning on living in McNerney Hall in the south part of campus. The suite consists of two rooms each with two students connected by a living space.
Academic Rigor The academic schedule for my degree seems amazing! There's so many classes that I'm so excited for and feel I will love.
Tips for prospective students If you're thinking about Ferris State University, get as much information as you can. Ferris has a lot of degrees that not many colleges in the country even have not to mention it also is a very good school for optometry, heating and air, and automotive.
In three sentences Ferris is a great school for all around career orientated learning. The staff and students are very friendly and are always there to help, not to mention always encouraging new students to join as many activities as possible. The small campus atmosphere creates a great, comforting learning experience and also gives students more opportunities for one on one learning with the professors.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Grand Rapids is ridiculously safe, I love it. Police are everywhere around town making me feel secure.
Greek Life I don't think there are any fraternities or sororities for Ferris, at least here in Grand Rapids.
Clubs and Activities There are digital art competitions every semester that are really fun.
Great for these types of students Technology-loving social students will absolutely love it here.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The teacher's parking garage is under ground, it looks like the Bat Cave.
Bang for the buck The price per credit hour is very cheap and the education is top notch.
What to do for fun I'm on the Grand Rapids campus, and the city is amazing. It's beautiful, clean, safe, and with lots to do like stores and movie theaters.
Food and Dining The food is fantastic.
Dorm Life The Grand Rapids campus doesn't have their own dorm, but they have deals worked out with several nearby apartment complexes.
Academic Rigor The classes are hard but satisfying, the teachers are all willing to sit down with you and help you learn what you need.
Tips for prospective students Ferris offers tons of scholarships, keep an eye out and apply for all of them!
In three sentences The classes are quite small. The teachers care and are very knowledgeable. The quality of education is fantastic.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus police are always on duty and can be called at anytime for escorts or problems. There are even blue emergency telephone lines up around campus that call directly to dispatch for any emergency.
Clubs and Activities They have many activities to be involved in, you will never be bored!!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is actually a stage near the campus bookstore where people are free to sing and dance for anyone who wants to sit and watch. On my campus visit I saw one of the RA's get up in stage and sing to everyone passing by, and he had an AMAZING voice!
Bang for the buck Honestly I am was very concerned about money when applying for college, so if you're looking for a school with reasonable prices for a quality education then look no further. I found that Ferris had some of the best prices in the state compared to most other top dog universities. That is actually the reason I chose Ferris!
What to do for fun There are many events that go on around campus everyday, and for students all of them are free. The school has concerts, art fairs, outdoor movies, social gatherings, museums, and year around sports events!
Food and Dining The dinning experience is unlike any other school I've been to. They have so much to offer! Things like salad bars, cold cuts, subs, hot meal deals, ice cream, and even a Mongolian BBQ! Its very clean and organized, the workers are very friendly (most of them fellow students) and the food is so delicious!
Dorm Life They have an amazing campus that I look forward to living on. They provide many living options such as dorms and apartments. If you live in a dorm you may also choose to live in a first year experience (FYE) dorm where you can get very involved in the community and learn the fundamentals of being on your own. I am personally taking this opportunity, as I suggest to any upcoming freshmen. The dorms are two rooms connected by a bathroom, and usually you have a roommate unless specified otherwise. The dorms aren't too small, and you have the option of building a loft which is also recommended.
Academic Rigor There are so many programs offered at Ferris. There's programs from business, to criminal justice, to health sciences, and music degrees. They even have their own Optometrist Clinic, Dental Clinic, and a General Health Clinics all open to the public, where students and professionals work.

Academic Rigor The classes are great but can be challenging. The academics are as tough here as any other college.
Tips for prospective students Find a program that you like, there are many to choose from. The Rock rocks. Make sure you come for a visit.

Food and Dining I only eat on campus once in a while, but when I do, I really enjoy it.
Dorm Life I live off campus
Academic Rigor Classes can be challenging if you are not a good student. There are a lot of foreign professors that are hard to understand. Pay attention in class because there aren't many profs that care enough to go out of their way to help you. At this campus, it's all on you!
Tips for prospective students Make sure you talk with advisors before you start your program. Don't just go for orientation and think you understand everything. Sit down and talk with SOMEONE that will care about you and your education.
In three sentences Ferris is a great social university, however the learning is challenging. Only had few professors that were interested and none of my advisors have had a willingness to help. Very successful programs, just think there was a better suit for me!

Food and Dining The Rock is the only good dinning hall. Westview is good if you are on the north side of campus, but otherwise use it for breakfast or a quick bite before class.
Dorm Life Dorms are kind of small, but can become really home if you design them right.
Academic Rigor Definitely have hard professors in some departments, but there are plenty of easy going, understanding professors who will work with you.
Tips for prospective students Definitely be active on campus, there is not much to do in town so campus will be your home. Join programs such as FYE and use them to make friends.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is Campus Police always patrolling around campus and there are emergency light post that call the police and make loud noises to protect you from being assaulted.
Greek Life Greek life is amazing, I am apart of a professional fraternity. Lambda Alpha Epsilon is the Criminal Justice fraternity. Like every fraternity or sorority, they need to give back to their community. Which all of our Fellow greeks do. We even made an event that originally started as just greeks do it, it's The Big Event. We go around to someones house and help them fix it or clean it. It's an all day event.
Great for these types of students Students that want to get a great education and make lifelong friends will have no trouble here at Ferris.
What to do for fun There are so many RSO's (registered student organizations) that there are to do, it's hard not to find something that you like to do that there isn't a group for. There are groups that have campus wide events sometimes to bring people just to enjoy themselves, concerts, bonanza's, ect.
Tips for prospective students If you are going into Criminal Justice, Pharmacy, or Welding; I suggest you go here. The other programs are great as well, but the ones I listed are the best we have and what we are known for.
In three sentences Ferris is truly a great school, all of the teachers put in an effort to teach the students. The students respond positively back getting more involved with the RSO's and clubs on campus. It's never a negative atmosphere to be in.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Ferris is know for being one of the safest college campuses in the State of Michigan.
Greek Life I haven't looked into this aspect of college life.
Clubs and Activities There is definately something for everyone. I have already joined 3 clubs, including the Equestrian Club, Women in Technology and Community Service Club. There are hundreds more to chose from.
Great for these types of students Students who wish to obtain a great education but don't want to attend a large campus and get lost in the shuffle.
Bang for the buck I'm new on campus, but I love my program and the opportunities presented to succeed in my field. I am happy I made this choice for obtaining my degree and feel it will be money well spent.
What to do for fun There is always something going on and you don't have to look far for fun. Numerous clubs to join, pool tables, ping-pong, card games and movie night with popcorn. Not to mention the parties, if you are so inclined. If you want to venture off campus, don't pass up the opportunity to visit the Old Pioneer Store and Emporium with the best ice cream and fudge in town. It's a great place to meet other students and the owners are the nicest people!
Food and Dining The food is good, but it's not my moms home cooking. Maybe I should have her give them her recipe for peachy ribs-my favorite meal. All in all, I'm not complaining and I'm not going hungry.
Dorm Life Exciting, eventful and sometimes a little crazy. Unless you come from a big family, it takes a little getting used to. You never have to worry about being alone, unless you chose to be. There is always someone willing to get together for meals, study time, or a little R & R.
Academic Rigor Yes, there will be daily homework and assignments. I have found the professors to be readily available to answer any questions I have and to offer helpful suggestions. So far . . . so good.
Tips for prospective students Don't sell this small town campus short. There are so many opportunities offered at Ferris and there is something for everyone. Take the time to check it out-you'll be glad you did.
In three sentences As a freshman it has been a whirlwind experience. The campus has provided so many getting to know you types of experiences and I have been fortunate to meet many other freshmen from all over the United States. It has been a GREAT first two weeks!

Categories Comments Campus Safety The only thing to worry about is getting your car smashed by drunk kids in the parking lot or getting hit by a car when you're trying to cross. Just keep your eyes open!
Bang for the buck Ferris is considered pretty expensive for the location. Big Rapids is pretty boring but Ferris is over $350/credit hour. If you don't have any scholarships or grants, don't take out loans for your first two years. Consider community college to save money.
What to do for fun Going out to Shooter's, tubing down the river, joining an RSO
Tips for prospective students Get involved early on-campus, whether it is Greek life or an RSO. You will regret it if you don't.
In three sentences I love Ferris but at the first the constant partying of many of the students bothered me at first. It's pretty much all a lot of students talk about. Most of the faculty are really nice, and as long as you do your homework you will be fine.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus I really like the Rankin Student center. It is usually pretty quiet so you can either sleep or study for your next classes.
What to do for fun There isn't really much to do for fun around here. You mainly just hang out with friends, play games in the lobby, and sometimes go to Shooters for a fun night out.
Dorm Life Living in the dorms are so much fun. You are right on campus so it is really easy to get to your classes and it's a great way to meet new people.
Tips for prospective students I would say if you have the grade point average and the ACT score, check out the honors halls. They are a really neat place and they give you good opportunities!

Categories Comments What to do for fun There are alot of things to do both on and off campus. You can join an Group specific to your major or you're free to join one that's not. We also have a movie theatre and The Gate, which is a good entertainment destination.
Food and Dining I eat at The Rock quite frequently, and it is very good eats. There are options for everyone.
Dorm Life I never personally lived in the dorms, but I heard they were a blast to live in.
Academic Rigor I definitely feel like I get the education I pay for at Ferris. Every class is smaller in size so it's more intense learning, but not difficult.
Tips for prospective students Check Ferris out. Don't be afraid to apply and do some research. If you want to know more about a prospective major, call the school and ask.
In three sentences Ferris State is the school for anyone. There are quite a few majors to choose from, and all the majors have a good footing in their respective industries. Every major is top notch.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are blue emergency phones located throughout campus when you need help. There are safety officers available to escort you to your car or dorm.
Greek Life There are many fraternity and sorority options on campus.
Clubs and Activities There are clubs and activities for most majors. The clubs will give you the opportunity to be involved in the community and to volunteer your time.
Great for these types of students I think Ferris State University is great for all types of students.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus During the Halloween season the students play a game called Zombies.
Bang for the buck The tuition is comparable to most universities.
What to do for fun Each dorm has activities to do in the lobby. There are pool tables, ping pong tables, video games and places to hang out with your new friends. The recreation center is located in the middle of campus and the rock wall is awesome. There is a swimming pool, aerobic classes, broom ball, basketball, volleyball, an indoor track and huge weight room with cardio machines.
Food and Dining The Rock Cafe has a wide variety of food. There are so many options that you could eat a different meal everyday for a month.
Dorm Life The dorms are set up suite style. There are 2 rooms connected by a bathroom. Two people are in each room. The dorms are coed. There are a lot of activities planned by the resident advisor.
Tips for prospective students Make a college visit and tour the beautiful campus. Ask questions regarding your desired field of study. Apply early for the best chance at scholarships.

Categories Comments Clubs and Activities There are so many different RSOs (Registered Student Organizations) at Ferris. Everyone is bound to find one that interests them and I highly recommend joining one!
Bang for the buck People should come to Ferris expecting what they put into it. Utilizing all the extras that are free on campus such as the writing center and the recreational center will make you fell like you're getting your moneys worth.
What to do for fun There are organizations on campus that bring different types of performers to campus such a comedians and political speakers. Also there are annual concerts that are very popular.
Food and Dining The Rock Cafe is the best college campus food you'll find. There is a lot of variety and healthy choices. Westview is the other cafeteria and it is the standard cafeteria one would expect at a college campus.
Dorm Life All the resident halls have a common area with different types of activities to do like ping pong, pool, and televisions. Also each floor has washers and dryers as well as an mini kitchen that has an oven, stove, and sink. The dorm rooms themselves are clean and functional.
Academic Rigor I came from a good high school that I think prepared me very well for college courses. I would say that Ferris is relatively easy academic wise. Obviously professors vary but in terms of what is required to get into certain programs and to graduate, the standards are average.
Tips for prospective students Come to Big Rapids and visit campus for a day. Big Rapids is not the most lively town so if you're looking for shopping malls and an urban setting Ferris is not for you.
In three sentences Ferris is everything it claims to be, but nothing more. I came to Ferris for a specific program and it has been as excellent as I anticipated. I enjoy my time here and I couldn't imagine myself anywhere else.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Ferris has a lot that you can do to relax and enjoy yourself. If you want a peaceful day you can go to the library and search up topics that interest you. They also have plenty of areas for you to play your favorite sports like: basketball, hockey, golf and soccer.
Food and Dining I never ate at Ferris facilities, but I heard that the Rock cafe has a lot of selections of food.
Dorm Life I do not live in a dorm. I live with my family in Morley, Michigan. From other people that live on campus told me the dorms are good, but the people who live there can be a big hassle.
Academic Rigor Ferris is strict with their rules and the way in which students need to abide in and out of class. When you are in class never miss more than four days in a semester, show up on time and always have your homework to give to your teacher. when you are out of class, park where you are assigned, and obey the laws that are set up by Ferris.
Tips for prospective students Make sure to always show up to class on time. Never miss a day of class unless you are sick. Make sure you ask questions or you will get behind in college.
In three sentences I enjoy going to Ferris, there is always someone that can help you to succeed as a student. It is a good size University that is clean and well taken care of. Most of the professors of each class that I am in are concern for their students education.

Categories Comments In three sentences Ferris is located in a nice small town that has most, if not all, of your essentials, as well as a lot of good food in the area. The dorms are decent and the cafeteria, known as The Rock, is phenomenal. There is also a Starbucks on campus and a nice store that sells pizza, ice cream, and all the snacks you would ever need.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I rate this poor because of the guy who assaulted the lady outside of the gym and was never caught. I feel as though all the campus police are too busy writing parking tickets.
Greek Life My best move I ever made. I love being in a sorority and meeting tons or new people and all the activities and leadership opportunity s.
Clubs and Activities I love being engaged in the on campus actives. Just wish they would do more.
Bang for the buck FSU is very expensive but I plan on using more of what my money goes to, like tutors and the gym as well as sports games.
What to do for fun I like participating in the RSO's and immoral sports as well as community service. Otherwise for fun there is not much. There is not place to shop, craft, or hangout.
Food and Dining I have been in both the rock and west view on guest passes and west view I was not impressed at all but the rock was a lot better because I like have everything is cooked right in front of you and the variety.
Dorm Life I am a transfer student so I never experienced the dorm life. I have been inside a couple and they look nice but not something for me.
Academic Rigor I like how classes are set up and the flow throughout the semester but the end is so stressful because every single one of my classes the week before finals were not used for studying instead we were cramming last minute final test and large essays. I do not ever feel ready for exams.
Tips for prospective students Be prepared to walk and be stressed but at the same time have years that you will not forget.
In three sentences I enjoy FSU over all but there are come parts that make me stressed. Such as talk to any of the employees over the phone, I find they rude. As the high cost it is to print at the library and how crowded it gets in there. Lastly the parking, I can never find parking and I ways end up walking 3 miles to get to class.

Categories Comments Greek Life Amazing, we are not buying our friends. Just great people to have around you and get to have a great time in town.
Food and Dining Great options to choose from, yet the Mongo grill can have a bit of a wait.
Dorm Life Great, especially Cramer Hall, very spacious. Many different types so you can be closer to different things on campus.
Tips for prospective students Don't be shy and get involved in RSO's.
In three sentences Best decision to go here and was able to meet great new people. Not to big of a campus so you can walk about everywhere. A lot of many different type of people, great culture.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Ferris is great for non-traditional and traditional students. They have day classes if you are a traditional on-campus student. If you are an off-campus student like me, they offer night a weekend classes so you could work, be a full-time parent and go to school.
Bang for the buck Ferris State University works with Community Colleges to offer students affordable education.
What to do for fun off-campus student
Food and Dining off-campus student
Dorm Life off-campus student
Academic Rigor off-campus student
Tips for prospective students No matter where you live in Michigan, check out all the off-campus locations Ferris State University has to offer.
In three sentences Ferris State University has given me an affordable and convenient way to earn my Elementary Education degree. I am able to attend Ferris in my hometown , Lansing, MI. This is important because I have three children, two still in elementary school and I need to be able to attend a local college.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Ferris is one of the safest campus' I have ever been on. Our campus police are always patrolling, both on foot and in vehicles. Campus is very well lit, there are very few places that don't have lights. If you have to walk somewhere are night Ferris also has a escort system that you can call and have someone walk with you from your dorm to where ever you need to go, or back to your dorm.
Clubs and Activities There are a lot of clubs and activities for a wide range of students. They can be hard to find but they are there if you look for them.
Bang for the buck That saying you get what you pay for doesn't apply at Ferris. You pay quite a bit of money for dorms that are scrubby and have issues with heating and the showers. College is expensive, but sometimes I don't think Ferris is worth the money I'm paying.
What to do for fun There really isn't a lot to do for fun here on campus. We have hockey games, and other sports events, but if you aren't a sports buff it can take some work to find out other activities.
Food and Dining The food at our two dining facilities are wonderful. It tastes really good, and there is a lot of variety. However the campus is very big and there are a lot of students, and there just isn't enough room in out two dining facilities.
Dorm Life Some of the dorms are not freshman friendly and yet Ferris requires students to live on campus until they are 20 or if they live within a 50 mile radius. Some of the dorms are more worn down and they have a lot of issues inside them. Ferris has really small dorm rooms that aren't set up the best as opposed to some of the other college dorms I've visited.
Academic Rigor Ferris is determined to watch you succeed. The staff and professors do everything they can to make sure you do your best, and get the most out of your money.
Tips for prospective students When you need help with something don't wait till the last minute, it turns out a lot of people will need help with the same thing and it will be hard to get a hold of someone who can help you. Sometimes it can take time, but never get up, be very persistent when it comes to getting help for something.
In three sentences Ferris State University is a wonderful school in which they do everything possible to make sure their students succeed. They have teachers that have worked in and are retired from the field in which they are teaching. In my opinion they are a little over priced, but what college isn't?

Categories Comments Campus Safety You will always see public safety cars patrolling around the school and for the most part you will feel very safe. There are blue safety stations around campus that in case you feel like something is going on, you can push a button and police officer will be there right away
Greek Life Not big on greek life, but there are a few fraternities ans sororities that you can join.
Clubs and Activities Ferris has a wide variety of activities and clubs. You can find something that you like here and if you dont like them or cant find one you can always start your own
Great for these types of students People who adore the cold weather and love to go snow boarding and participate in winter activities will fit well here.
Bang for the buck Its pretty good for the price of the tuition. It can definitely be better when it comes to technology, like WiFi.
What to do for fun There are a lot of things you can do. They have the Jim Crow museum in the basement of the library and thats definitely something to check out. This is by no means a party school but you can find some if you know where to look. If you're old enough, the bars are pretty good on certain nights.
Food and Dining The cafeteria is pretty good. They have a lot of variety. They also have Starbucks, Seattle's Best and Quiznos on campus.
Dorm Life I actually live on the on campus apartment and am living alone. I prefer this way because i dont have to worry about roommates, but the dorms are alright. WiFi is really the only big problem that you might encounter.
Academic Rigor Academics are rigorous depending on the program that you are in. The business program can have some rigorous classes especially when you get more into depth with your major.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you apply early enough so you can have time to take care of things before you arrive to school. When it comes to financial aid, sing up for direct deposit and get a Huntington bank account because it speeds up the process when when comes to getting your refund.
In three sentences Ferris State University is a school where the students and faculty are very nice and helpful if its your first time around. Not really big for its athletic department except for its hockey team, which is division 1. And most importantly, professors are amazing if you are in the business program.

Categories Comments Campus Safety At any time, you can get escorted anywhere on campus. Campus has there own police and do regular patrols.
Greek Life Several fraternities and sororities.
Clubs and Activities Numbers clubs and activities. Try 1 out and see.
Great for these types of students Anyone who doesn't want to be just a number. You end up seeing familiar faces and the professors can actually put a name to your face. Small enough to not be overwhelming, yet big enough to experience the college/dorm life.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The big rock, by Rock Cafe. Always being painted something different. The Osprey webcam. Every year, Osprey come back and nest.
Bang for the buck Compares to most small universities and colleges.
What to do for fun Several student organizations are on campus. There are a variety. Pick one that interests you. There are several places, within walking distance, off campus. Always a sporting event going on. Lots of students take advantage of the snow and go sledding on the hills around campus. Warmer climate brings several activities on campus.
Food and Dining Food options are great! That being said, no matter what the food, there comes a time when it can get boring. Try other foods. Every now and then, allow for an occasional meal off campus. Make sure to have snacks, etc. in your dorm room. You may need to grab something quick, if you have early classes. Make sure you eat!
Dorm Life Dorm life can be a major adjustment. Pic your roommate carefully! You will be living in close quarters with this person. Learn to lighten up on expectations. If not, you will be miserable. Start a cleaning schedule right away, with your roommate and suite mates. FYI-- not everyone knows how to clean. Learn, teach, and help.
Academic Rigor You get out what you put in. If you blow off classes, it will be a major struggle. If you fall behind, get some tutoring. It is free!!
Tips for prospective students Do not go to college thinking it's like high school. It is not. Definitely attend all of your classes, no matter if you like them or not. If you are struggling, ask for help. There are lots of resources, so don't be afraid to seek help. Homesickness will hit everyone. Stay busy and get involved with on campus organizations. You will meet lots of new friends, just make sure they are the right ones.
In three sentences Perfect size university. Lots of caring professors and advisers. Everything is in within a 15-20 minute walk.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There are some fun things to do here. You can go to sporting events, bowling, and events that entertainment unlimited hosts in the auditorium.
Food and Dining The food here is good. Sometimes it gets repetitive where you feel like you are eating the same thing everyday.
Dorm Life In the dorms, you can choose a room that is suitable for you. For instance, if you like a quiet environment there are halls that have mandatory quiet hours all day.
Academic Rigor The science classes are the most rigor at Ferris State. They may be hard, but you can pass them with studying and help from teachers.

Clubs and Activities More clubs than I can count.
Great for these types of students Students interested in technology, pharmacy, and culinary arts should look into Ferris.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Everyone loves the Rock some people spend all day there.
What to do for fun There is plenty to do in Big Rapids. On campus we have a gym that's free to the students, several clubs that do things like racing or competing with other clubs, a gulf course, and many different programs held by the students themselves.
Food and Dining Ferris currently has two restaurants that are covered by the meal plan. The Rock is famous throughout Michigan for a good reason.
Dorm Life There's nothing really special about the dorms.
Academic Rigor In my program I have to study almost everyday, but for my career goals, everything I learn is important.
Tips for prospective students I recommend that incoming students should study at least twice as hard as they did in high school.

Great for these types of students Hockey games are a BLAST if you like sports or fun/loud cheering sections.

Food and Dining The Rock has a lot of choices, all of which are good. You really can't go wrong with the food here.
Dorm Life The dorms definitely aren't the nicest, but there are a lot of events going on all the time when you live in the dorms.
Academic Rigor It depends what major you go for, Ferris is pretty serious about Radiography, Dental Hygiene, Optometry and Pharmacy school. But overall it is a very good school where you can get as much help as you need.
Tips for prospective students Make sure to use the tutoring center when you are struggling before it's too late! Also make sure you understand all of your FAFSA loans, along with summer loans!

Clubs and Activities Registered Student Organizations for everything you could think of. If we don't have it then you can start a new RSO.
Great for these types of students Country, laid-back individuals.
What to do for fun Hockey games, house parties, some frat houses, Star Shooters, and Schuburgs.
Food and Dining The Rock is the place to be for students and townies (local families). How many students can say their college cafeteria has a Mongolian Barbecue?
Dorm Life I lived in the dorms for two years and the only thing I liked about it was the countless opportunities to meet people. The dorms are very outdated at Ferris, but cover the basic needs for college students.
Academic Rigor Its college. The classes are difficult if you slack and don't go to class. But, if you attend class and study a lot, you will be fine.
