Great for these types of students

This is a great school for someone that wants to attend a major university, yet one where they won't be lost in the chaos. People who like being away from a major city but also close enough if they need one will do well here. The campus is beautiful and the people are great!

    Tips for prospective students

Make multiple copies of the syllabus and keep them everywhere. Keep up with reading and it helps to start studying when you find out a test date, not the night or just hours before. Also, go to extra help if a professor offers it and participate in class.

    Bang for the buck

    It's affordable for Florida Residents.

    Am enjoying being here

I love the atmosphere! It's not huge, but it's big enough. The people are amazing and always there to help. Most of my professors knew me by name and I wasn't just a name on a long list to them.

    Am learning a lot

I am learning a lot both through lectures and self-teaching. When your professor says read, READ!

Great for these types of students

This school is great for students who like small class sizes and want to enjoy all that Florida has to offer.

    Tips for prospective students

Biology is the hardest class I had ever taken. It was a wake up call to me. Just study, go to class, pay attention in class and you will do fine.

    Bang for the buck

Every University is expensive, but if you want to get the most out of your money while living on campus FGCU is the place for you. The North Lake Village apartments are so nice. You have your own bedroom in a 4 bedroom, 2 bath, kitchen, and living-room apartment.

    Am enjoying being here

The University campus is beautiful. I have a dorm right on the waterfront. There is always something to do. Plenty of clubs and activities to keep you involved. It is what you make of it.

    Am learning a lot

I learn something new everyday in and out of class. I joined the Honors Program and love it. All my professors wished me the best in my classes. The classes are small which presents the opportunity to get to know the teachers and receive one on one help.

Great for these types of students

Students who want one-on-one time with their professors, want a medium sized school, who are okay with doing a lot of assignments online (we are a green campus), and students who like to take on leadership roles. Since everything is developing, there are numerous leadership opportunities. I would also say someone who likes to enjoy the outdoors!

    Tips for prospective students

MEET WITH YOUR PROFESSORS! Going in for help makes all the difference so take advantage of office hours. Also, make sure you don't procrastinate. You know all your assignments from the first day of class so if you keep up with deadlines you will do just fine. FGCU is a growing university. Don't be scared off because it isn't as big as the other Florida colleges. It is still a lot of fun and provides an amazing education. Several of FGCU's educational programs are amongst the top and have great credibility. I visited over 20 college campuses and FGCU stood out the most to me.

    Bang for the buck

If you are a Florida resident, this is the place to be. FGCU offers amazing scholarships and 'Bright Futures' to Florida residents. However, don't be scared off if you are out of state because there are also scholarship opportunities for you such as an 'Out-of-state Tuition Waiver'. Either way, you could attend this school for a reasonable price.

    Am enjoying being here

Being from Illinois, I love everything about FGCU. Of course the warm weather is nice, and my stay at the beautiful water front will never be over spent. Even though FGCU is still growing, there is still plenty to do and get involved with. Personally I am in the Honors program, a sorority, and I also participate in intramural sports. There are shopping centers nearby, numerous school events and concerts like Eaglepalooza and Bird Bash to attend, and everything is in pristine condition because the school is still young.

    Am learning a lot

I am learning more than I thought I would and it is because of the way my classes and professors are. The class sizes are perfect for me which are typically around 30 students. Even the few lectures that I have are still small enough where I don't feel intimidated or lost. The professors are very open to help and the class environment gives each student as much attention as they need. I feel like I learn something new everyday and most of my professors teach with passion which makes me remember everything.

Great for these types of students

This school is perfect for someone that wants to be a name and not a number. The class sizes are around 20-30 students. This is also a perfect school for someone that is interested in the environment and wanting to promote a greener Earth.

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared for Biology! It is an eye opener to college and one of the hardest courses they offer here. Although for the most part if you follow the syllabus, go to class, pay attention, and study for test, you will do just fine.

    Bang for the buck

For the most part your money is well spent here. They offer reasonable tuition and and fair meal plan. I do believe housing fees are a bit on the high side compared to other Florida schools.

    Am enjoying being here

I am a Freshmen here and so far I love it. There is always activities to participate in. This school is still new and is constantly improving and expanding all parts of campus. It is also super easy to make friends as it is a good community of people.

    Am learning a lot

Every teacher here is willing to help you if you are struggling or have a question. They actually care about you and will try their best to help you succeed. All teachers have a amount of hours they are available outside of class if you need the extra assistance.

    Honors, Education majors, Anyone!

    Tips for prospective students

Do your homework. The syllabus is your Bible! Show up to class. Have fun and get involved!

    Bang for the buck

This school is definitely a bang for the buck. They have plenty of scholarships for you to apply for as well as having one of the lowest tuition rates.

    Am enjoying being here

This school is not exactly a big school yet with a lot of things to pull people together, but there is some clubs & sororities & fraternities of course. They also like to make it a habit to get everyone out to the lake for swimming and jet skiing and things like that. It's fun though!

    Am learning a lot

This school is a great school. Of course you will learn, but this school really provides a great learning experience. The faculty & staff are helpful and will give you a good education.

Great for these types of students

Those with an avid love of learning, looking for a college with a smaller community (though it is rapidly growing), and anyone looking for an affordable college education in SW Florida

    Tips for prospective students

One main tip I go by is to scope out your classrooms beforehand. By doing this, on the first day of school it'll be a lot easier to find your classes and calculate how much time you'll need to get from one place to another. Also, parking is usually hectic, so make sure to give yourself a good extra 10-15 minutes to find a parking spot if you'll be driving to campus.

    Bang for the buck

Overall I can't imagine enjoying college much more than I do at FGCU. The classes are reasonably priced for the education provided, and it's a great place to be. The school always has scholarships running as well, so participating in those helps cut down on the funds needed to attend. My one gripe is with the prices of food at the on-campus dining areas (mainly the convenience store), but I've seen this happen at a lot of other colleges too, so I suspect it's pretty common.

    Am enjoying being here

Living off campus (and being a bit reserved as is), I initially thought it would be difficult for me to make new friends and enjoy the college lifestyle. I was quickly proven wrong. The other students that I've encountered while here have all been extraordinarily nice. Campus involvement also helps, and there are a ton of clubs to join, as well as school-funded activities to participate in (lots of tournaments, concerts, game days, etc.) The campus is laid out beautifully and provides an ever-relaxing setting in which to either study, hang out with friends, or just sit an relax. The campus itself is lovely enough, but there's a lot more to be done just outside school grounds at either GulfCoast Town Center, Miromar Outlets, or my favorite, the Estero Community Center. Because the college is centrally located, there's always something to do whether you want to stick around school or not.

    Am learning a lot

I've been attending FGCU for two years now, and though I was originally reserved in attending the college (most of my friends were going off to larger, more well-known schools) I am exceptionally glad that I decided to stick around. All the teachers I've had have been just phenomenal. My primary focus of study in English, and though that's my passion, the teachers for my other required courses have lent to me the enjoyment of their fields of study as well. As for my regular professors (those I end up having multiple classes with in line with my major), all of them are absolutely brilliant. It's great to see how much they genuinely enjoy what their teaching, and in turn, it is a lot easier for the students to get caught up in that love of knowledge as well. Within the short while I've been at the college, I've learned (and enjoyed the subject material) more than I could ever have imagined.

    Campus Safety

FGCU was voted Florida's safest university this past year and its no question why. Theres a university police station right on campus with officers on duty 24/7. In each room theres also something we call a rape cord and if you ever feel in danger you just pull it and an officer will be at your door within minutes. We also have emergency polls within almost every few feet all around campus, all you do is press a button and you'll have an officer around within minutes as well.

    Greek Life

Greek life is a huge part of FGCU! Greek life is probably the best way to become involved and make life long friends at college. Unfortunately FGCU is to new to offer housing to its greek life just yet, but it is in the near future.

    Clubs and Activities

FGCU offers almost every kind of club you can imagine. From hockey (right across from a huge ice arena) to baking to religion. FGCU makes it almost impossible for a student to not be involved, theres something for everyone!

Great for these types of students

FGCU is great for a variety of students but its especially great for the college student who loves the beach, lake, and all kinds of things that involve being outdoors and in the water. Our campus is filed with nature and water and being right on the west coast of Florida its the best place for this!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Ever heard of Club Apple? Didn't think so. Interestingly enough FGCU student have managed to turn the Applebee's resturant just across from campus into one of the most popular clubs to go to on Wednesday nights. You may not believe me, but its a blast. Another place to see literally everyone with a social life on campus is to go to Bar Louies right up the street for $1 burger nights every Monday, and trust me when on a college budget you will definitely be takeing advantage of $1 burgers!

    Bang for the buck

FGCU is a moderately fair priced school. The housing is a bit expensive but worth every penny, considering its condition and age. Meal plans at FGCU are also very fairly priced.

    What to do for fun

Besides all the wake boarding, paddle boarding, sailing, tubing, tanning and tons of other water sports there is for you to do just outside your door on the campus lake FGCU also offers a great nightlife area. Theres tons of local bars and clubs to hang out at. And other things for the more calm student such as mini golf and bowling.

    Food and Dining

The campus dining is called Sovi and has the most delicious variety of foods you will ever find in a school cafeteria. Even if your picky and use to only your moms cooking, trust me...Sovi will always have something for you.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life at FGCU is beyond amazing! The apartment style dorms have 4 bedrooms 2 full bathrooms a huge living room and best of all a full kitchen in each room. Oh and might I add that these apartment style dorms on overlooking the campus lake where everyone hangs out at all day everyday.

    Academic Rigor

The academic rigor at FGCU is very fair. Most often students pass with A's and B's if they put in mild effort.

    Tips for prospective students

Try and take as many of the interesting pre-reqs Gulf Coast has to offer before you hit your upperclassmen years. Try to live on campus for as long as possible, almost no university compares to our lake side housing at FGCU.

    In three sentences

Florida Gulf Coast University is a small school in Fort Myers, Florida that is rapidly growing. It is fairly new and has great on campus housing for students. This university is a great place to spend your four year education, especially for a student who loves the outdoors and water.

Great for these types of students

Those people who like small classes and hands on are a good fit for FGCU.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved to meet people. I am in the tennis club and met a lot of people through there. Also, dont procrastinate especially when it comes to studying. There are options such as tutors, centers, etc. to get you through.

    Bang for the buck

It is affordable and they offer scholarships in which you do one application and it automatically gives you a chance for every scholarship. Also, fill out the FAFSA for more options.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is beautiful. There is a small man made beach right on campus that allows you to do many things like canoe, water ski, etc. It is not that small of a campus where you see the same person every day but not a big campus where you can not meet anyone.

    Am learning a lot

The class sizes are small, which allows you to have a more one on one learning environment. Most teachers will do whatever they can to help you pass. While they do not have as many class options as a bigger university, they still have some interesting classes to choose from.

It you;re a nature freak this school is perfect for you. And if you are not...like me then this school will open your eyes and allow you to meet many friendly people from all over.

    Bang for the buck

The school is worth every penny in your pockect, besides the food plan; only because sometimes its better to cook your own food and not eat out all the time.

    Am enjoying being here

I love it here in Fort Myers.Theres always something to do. People here are very friendly which took me by suprise; theres never a night or day where you'll be bored to death. And the best thing about this school is that it is fairly new building tradition's year after year. So if theres something you stand for and want to start a club the collge willl let you.

    Am learning a lot

The teachers at this University are very helpful, forgiving, and willing. Many of the profeessors here like intereact and get to know each student to help them and make a difference in your life. Its just to good be true.Thet also have a Writing Center where professors sit down with you and help you with any type of paper you are writing to help you succeed and get an A.

    Medical-bound, serious, sociable

    Tips for prospective students

Please, please only come to this school if you are a serious student. It isn't a very big school, and the choices for classes are limited and it ticks me off how slacker students will take away spots in classes that I need to get into and then end up dropping out a few weeks later. Don't do that, please.

    Bang for the buck

I don't think the professors are the best.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is beautiful and they do their best to make sure there are activities for everybody to get involved in. There's a Starbucks on campus. It's amazing. Probably the best one in town.

    Am learning a lot

I would highly recommend RateMyProfessor.com. It weeds out the horrible professors from the great ones. It hasn't steered me wrong yet.

Any student would be comfortable here, but the university definitely stresses the importance of sustainability. If this sounds appealing to you, prepare to make FGCU your home sweet home!

    Tips for prospective students

Become involved, communicate with your professors, and don't shy away from participating in class discussion.

    Bang for the buck

I love that FGCU has their Foundation Scholarships to help students offset the cost of attending college. This college is much more affordable than the college that I transferred from.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is beautiful in that it incorporates the natural landscape into everything. The people are nice and the weather is wonderful here in southwest Florida!

    Am learning a lot

FGCU has professors that are really passionate about their subjects and their students. The professors here are reachable and willing to work with you if you're having trouble. Small class sizes help students to become more involved with their classmates. There are also great Supplemental Instruction programs and tutors available if you need a different way of looking at things.

Great for these types of students

Self-motivated learners, individuals with environmental interests, creative minds (there isn't much to do in Fort Myers), people who can tolerate not having a football team or general apathy when it comes to team spirit.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are interested in attending FGCU, definitely take a campus tour. Nothing compares to actually being at a location to get a feel for a school. It is not too difficult to get in, but unless you truly want to be here you won't be happy.

    Bang for the buck

I don't know of any college that is affordable (unless perhaps community college). I believe FGCU is cheaper than the more popular Florida universities but it's still expensive.

    Am enjoying being here

I love the campus. The Floridian ecology is well preserved and gorgeous. The school also has a private lake which is nice to study and tan by. In general, the students are nice and we have a laid back sense of community. However, many freshman are dismayed to find that we aren't a party school. Sure people throw the occasional party but if people really want to get loose they are wise enough to do it off-campus.

    Am learning a lot

The relatively small size of the school in conjunction with nice professors who care makes FGCU a great place to study. Especially for freshmen and sophomores, the teachers make themselves very available to you and they are rather flexible with their office hours. Don't hesitate, if you ever feel you have a question about what you are learning, to email your professor. Overall, teachers appreciate effort and you will get out of it as much as you put in.

Students who are used to a small school. If you like one on one attention the classes are small so you can receive that.

    Tips for prospective students

If your going to go here get involved. Find a club or organization that you would be interested in. If you don't get involved your going to miss out on so much

    Bang for the buck

If you're living on campus, the dorms are the best that I saw in my search for school.

    Am enjoying being here

I love going to school here. The campus is small so I see a friendly face everywhere I go.

    Campus Safety

Safety on campus is great. There are emergency poles all around campus where you can just press a button and the campus police will come straight to your location if you need help or just feel unsafe and want a ride home. Also the campus police are constantly roaming the school to keep an eye out for suspicious activity or to help students.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many clubs offered at school. There is literally a club for every interest a person may have. Most are displayed on colorful posters around campus and in the Cohen center.

    What to do for fun

There are many things to do for fun on campus like sporting events, movie on the library lawn, and greek life events. Also the waterfront at North Lake is a popular place for students to hangout and have fun in the sun. At the waterfront you can go boating, paddle boarding, sailing or even fishing. Off campus you can go to Gulf Coast Town Center where you can go out to eat, shop, or go to the bars. There are also other pars and hookah lounges where students often hangout.

    Food and Dining

There are many delicious places to eat on campus like Chik-fil-a, Jamba Juice, and Blu Sushi where you can use your dining dollars or just pay with cash which is very convenient. Also there is Sovi dining for students is South Village so they don't have to travel all the way to campus to get a good meal. But other students not living in South Village can also eat there too with a meal plan or dining dollars.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are very fun and comfortable at the same time. There are many activities in the freshman dorms to help students get accumulated to college life. Also there are many people and resources in the freshman dorms to help them get the grades they need to be successful. In the Northlake dorms, everyone feels like a family and there are also many activities to participate in. Because of the apartment style dorms Northlake offers you get comfort and freedom along with the security of the school.

    Academic Rigor

As long as you go to class, take notes, and ask the professors questions you will have no problem getting good grades. As long as you put in some work at the right times you will have no problem getting good grades and also have fun at the same time.

    Tips for prospective students

Be open mined to trying new things and participating in school events and activities, it will make your time spent at this school ten times better. Also don't be intimidated to ask questions or to get involved because everyone is willing to help you and everyone is open to having new people in their group. Last thing i would suggest is to venture off from your normal group of friends and meet new people. You will be surprised how much meeting new people and making new friends can affect and change your life for the better.

    In three sentences

Very helpful and involved administrators and professors. It is a small but growing school so it feels like a family. Student life and academic life mesh together very well to provide a great experience for students and staff alike.

Great for these types of students

Environmentally friendly students love our campus, we always have activities that teach about sustainability and our campus has a nature trail on it as well. The scenery is perfect for people who like the outdoors.

    Tips for prospective students

I recommend using websites that rate your professors before choosing your classes, most of them are accurate and if it says a professor doesn't put up with texting in class and you don't know how to put down your cellphone, that class isn't right for you!

    Bang for the buck

I am not the best to decide this, I'm not really sure where other schools stand as far as tuition is concerned. I do however think that our classes are expensive if you do not have any scholarships. But that doesn't mean that you don't learn plenty from them.

    Am enjoying being here

I love my campus 100%, we are a green campus, and everything from our building design to our air conditioning is made to be more friendly to the environment. We have solar panels and motion censored lights to help reduce energy costs as well.

    Am learning a lot

Our professors on campus are very engaging and they usually teach you more than you need to know if you choose the right professors. Most of our students in our science and engineering studies were shocked at how much they learned.

    What to do for fun

2 huge malls across the street, always something to do! Also, FGCU has a lake, so canoeing, going on the boat or even tanning is a big thing to do.

    Food and Dining

The food selection is alright, but the campus dining for the dorms is great and it always has different selections.

    Dorm Life

FGCU has hands down the best dorms!! You can live on the schools lake, what's better than that!

    Academic Rigor

FGCU isn't a huge school, so classes are difficult but the teachers are really helpful and class sizes are small so the teachers really care about you.

    Tips for prospective students

Just check the campus out, once you take a tour you will be in LOVE!!

    In three sentences

FGCU is great school, with a beautiful campus and teachers that really care. FGCU has small class sizes, with a big campus feel, so you get every aspect of what a college should be. At FGCU everybody is so friendly and nice, you really feel at home.

The lake on campus is amazing. The sailboats, kayaks and wake boarding boat make this a very fun college.

    Am learning a lot

The small class help me learn a great deal and I can talk to my teachers very easily, when I have questions.

Florida Gulf Coast University is not only the perfect school for the environmentalists, but also for the students who enjoy a relaxed and easy going environment. The school offers a great variety of programs and activities, and employs some of the greatest professors. If I were to rate Florida Gulf Coast University on a scale of one to ten, i would rate it between an eight or a nine.

Campus police are there when you need them. Don't ever hesitate to go to them with a severe problem.

Not very traditional, so I never was interested.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Miromar and Coconut point, and the shopping plaza where Target is was the most fun and that has to be what I miss most about Fort Myers.

    Bang for the buck

FGCU I feel compared to where I am now is ridiculously expensive. However some may feel that is it worth it. I did not.

    What to do for fun

Honestly not too much, The wildlife is amazing, so walking around when it's nice out was the most relaxing feeling. The clubs are overrated and expensive, and if you're not drinking you may be playing take care of the non sober person so generally I hung out with my roommate who ended up being one of my best friends who also left FGCU, a group of friends, and my RA.

    Food and Dining

    SoVi is where it's at!

    Dorm Life

Dorm life was the most amazing part of FGCU. I lived in Biscayne and had an amazing RA who I still keep in touch with! He helped me with every little thing I can imagine because I moved to FGCU knowing no one.

    Academic Rigor

Classes seem easy at first but then your professors may spin a twist on you, and you end up with a bad grade. Gain a relationship with your professor to hopefully avoid that.

    Tips for prospective students

Focus on school, Don't get caught up in the wrong people. A lot of students at FGCU have careless attitudes and that can get the best of you, but be above that!

    In three sentences

Florida Gulf Coast was not the place for me, however it is a wonderful environment for some students. However after a year of being there more than half the people I met in classes, or in the dorms left. I just remember people either hate it or they love it.

    What to do for fun

The Florida Gulf Coast University Campus has a lake with a beach for swimming, sailing, paddle boarding and water skiing. The campus also has beach volleyball nets and a fitness center. The campus is always brining a comedian or an band on campus to help entertaine the students.

    Food and Dining

The Food is campus food not awful but not great. The dining plans are expensive so many of us do not buy them we go to the grocery store and use the microwave.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are great!! Ilive in the freshmen dorms, I share a bathroom with one other person and have my own room to keep my things and to sleep in. The Campus is new so the dorms are newer equipped with cable and internet.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are difficult and the professors expect a lot out of the students, but there are math and writing labs and tutors to help students get over the academic humps.

    Tips for prospective students

I would recommend that you stay on campus, I did not do that the first semester and ended up spending a lot of time on the road. I moved on campus 2nd semester and I am truly getting a great experience.

    In three sentences

The University is great!! It is big enough to offer the big University feel but small enough for professors to be able to provide individual attention.

    Campus Safety

I haven't had a problem with being unsafe on campus, but if you ever do feel unsafe there are blue poles all around that call for UPD and also, the dorms at North Lake have emergency cords.

    Greek Life

Even though FGCU doesn't have Greek Housing, it's still incredibly fun and something I would recommend as a sorority member. You get out of it what you put into it! I have incredible experiences and memories with my sisters, women in other sororities and with fraternity members and many more waiting for me that I'm looking forward to.

    Clubs and Activities

The clubs don't really seem to do too much, but there are a lot to join and choose from to see what fit is right for you.

Great for these types of students

It's great for students who don't want to go to a small school but don't want to go to a massive school, either. I come from a small town so I wasn't ready for a school the size of UF for example but I also didn't want go to a small school. It's great because there is still a lot to do but your professor can still know you by name rather than being just another number.

    Food and Dining

The dining hall at SoVi is pretty bad but there are many options besides SoVi that are pretty good. We have Starbucks, Einstein's, Chick Fil A, Blu Sushi, Subway, and Taco Bell.

    Dorm Life

I lived on campus my freshman year and my roommates were terrible (they were randoms) but the dorms are really nice - in South Village they just added a really nice new pool and you have your own separate bedrooms attached to a common area rather than just one room with bunk beds squeezed in - and in North Lake you have your own apartment style suite. North Lake is also next to the waterfront, the gym, Alico Arena where basketball games are held, the baseball field, and the pools. West Lake is even nicer apartments but with more competition to get in and are technically off campus.

    Academic Rigor

I've had professors that have been really easy yet still teach a lot and I've had professors that are really tough. FGCU has a lot of really good programs and professors to offer.

    Campus Safety

It's a very safe campus. There are blue tall things around campus that have a button you can press if you feel unsafe or want to be walked out to your car. Once that button is pressed, the police will be there is less than 90 seconds.

    Greek Life

I will be rushing in the fall. There are 5 sororities and 4 fraternities.

    Clubs and Activities

There is such a variety of clubs and activities to get involved in. BUT, if there's nothing that interest you, you can start your own club! It's amazing

Great for these types of students

This school is great for any type of student. Again, there are very many resources for studying and tutoring. But there is a fun aspect to the school for those types of students as well.

    What to do for fun

There is SO much to do on campus. Don't ever let anyone tell you that there's nothing to do! If they say it's a boring school, they have no one to blame but themselves. There are so many opportunities to have a great time. There's the beautiful waterfront that you can go to.. You can go tan, or you can rent things like paddle boards, and kayaks. You can even go waterskiing on the school's boat. You just have to make sure you schedule an appointment to rent it (and you can only rent it for 30 mins.) There's also a fitness center, which is free to use, as long as you have your FGCU school I.D. There's many different classes you can take at this center as well. (Like Zumba, or AB-Attack classes) There's a course close to the school that can be checked out at this website: http://www.fgcu.edu/CampusRec/Outdoors/eagleChallenge.html There's a bunch of different clubs you can join that interest you as well. And if there are none that interest you, you can start your own! There's a lot of things to do, you just have to get out there and find them.

    Food and Dining

The food is pretty good. I've eaten at SoVI dining, and the food is actually pretty decent! On campus though, there is places like Subway, Einsteins, Taco Bell, Home Zone (it's supposed to be like home cooked meals), and many other places. There's a new organic pizza place on campus as well, that will deliver to your dorm free of charge. Off campus, there is anywhere you could EVER dream of eating. There's so many options, that you'll never be stuck with eating at the same place. Great variety.

    Dorm Life

I love the dorms at FGCU. They're nice because even if you have a weird room mate, you aren't really stuck with them. You have your own room, so there's a good amount of privacy. There is the issue of sharing a room with a shower and room with a toilet, so that's really the only way you'd be sharing anything with them. But if you have a good room mate like I do, that's not even really an issue! There is a small foyer where you can keep a mini fridge and microwave. (This is all in South Village of course. North and West Lake dorms have a different set up.)

    Academic Rigor

I can't judge this yet, because I'm just starting out at this school.

    Tips for prospective students

This school is amazing. The campus is great, and there are so many resources available to students. There is a place where you can take your papers to get help. They will help you at any stage of your writing, and will tell you what you could improve on. There is almost always free tutoring on campus. (There's a schedule for what is being tutored when.) The majority of students and professors are very nice, and very school spirited. We take pride in going to this school, because it's a well-rounded place to be.

    In three sentences

Florida Gulf Coast is an amazing school. Everyone is spirited, and everyone is sweet. There's a lot of options to get involved, and there is help ready for you whenever you need it. Oh, and the campus is beautiful!

Safety towers are everywhere. FGCU is surrounded by a nice community as well. Definitely very safe.

    Greek Life

Our Greek life is pretty solid. We don't have Greek housing yet, but that doesn't take too much away from the experience.

    Clubs and Activities

There are tons of different clubs and things to do out of class. New clubs are always being made as well.

Great for these types of students

Open minded students who love the outdoors and being a part of this university's history. Not just another number to others.

    Dunk City

    Bang for the buck

It's cheaper than some schools. Cheaper housing can be found nearby at apartments as well.

    What to do for fun

Basketball games!! The lake on campus where you can go paddle boarding, tubing, wake boarding, kayaking, and etc for free. There are always events being thrown, shopping centers are close by, the beach is very close. Hiking in the nature trails. Bars and other night time events close by. There's a lot even though the area is also a retirement community.

    Food and Dining

The dining hall food isn't like something from a 5 star restaurant, but is good. There are good food and drink options on campus as well.

    Dorm Life

Dorms are great. Clean, new, and you have your own room, minus a few doubles on campus. They are close to campus and have a lot of events thrown for students living on campus.

    Academic Rigor

I'm not in my upper level classes yet, but my classes so far have been challenging yet not impossible, If you actually want to learn the subject, you will and some.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply early, visit the school, and attend a basketball game. Feel free to check out our waterfront as well. Don't just look over the university for its age.

    In three sentences

This university isn't as big as most other public schools in Florida, but very well established, has great programs, and rapidly growing for its age. Class sizes are small, more personal, and have mostly great passionate professors( there are a few not so good, but lets be real, most universities have them). We run a little different than most universities, and that's what I like about FGCU. Go Eagles!

    Campus Safety

Our campus is actually one of the safest public collegiate campuses in Florida. I haven't heard, since I've been there that anything serious has happened on campus. There might be a little prank every so often, but that's honestly it. There is a big campus PD presence all the time. Especially at night, to ensure the safety of the students. The school also features email and text alerts when there is a safety alert on campus. SO if anything serious was to happen, all the students would receive a notification. To again ensure that no one walks into danger. If you're a student driver, be mindful of your speed on and around campus. Because campus PD can pull you over and give you a ticket.

    Greek Life

This is the one that a lot of people have questions about. So here it goes. There are approximately 5 Fraternities, 5 Sororities, and 5 or so Multicultural Organizations (both Fraternity and Sorority) FGCU as a institution has a Zero Tolerance policy for hazing, as many institutions do as well. But FGCU takes it a step farther. Their Judicial process for accused hazing organizations is not Innocent until proven Guilty in fact is quite the opposite. There was an organization on campus that was kicked off campus because of an alleged hazing incident. FGCU doesn't take it lightly and neither do I or does my organization Kappa Sigma. Anyways, continuing on from that slight depressed point, the GPC (Greek Programming Council) holds Greek Week every year on campus, in which all the organizations on campus are made into teams and compete against one another for prizes. It's a great time! Joining a Greek organization honestly isn't as bad as it sounds, It's not what it looks like in movies and in TV shows. There isn't parties every Saturday. It's a lot of hard work, to not only improve yourself and your campus but your community. Greek life holds you to a higher standard for learning, and guides you to become a better leader as well as a better student. As far as Greek Life at FGCU is concerned; It's growing and getting better. There's room for improvement. Only 6% of the students at FGCU are in a greek organization. Many of whom work on campus, for the school or are members of student government as well as on sports teams and full time workers at their respective jobs.

    Clubs and Activities

A lot of the clubs on campus are actually great to be involved in, clubs like: Photography, Paintball (Actually our paintball club team is the 3 time national champion's for collegiate paintball), League of Legends, Food Forest, GSA, etc. The Recreation center/Complex is amazing. I really enjoy spending time there, because there's so many things to do: work out, play basketball, tennis, swim, wakeboard, tubing, etc. There's something for everyone, trust me.

Great for these types of students

A lot of people have different interests and that's perfectly fine. For the person who likes gaming/being indoors: There are several Computer labs on campus as well as in the dorm buildings. The internet I'll admit isn't super fast, so use the ethernet cable to connect to the network rather than the Wifi. Because there is about 2,000 other students on the same network, so just be patient. There is also a room in the dorm buildings to watch movies, play table tennis, air hockey, piano, and just study. For the Outdoors person: There's several soccer size fields to play sports on, theres also the ROC (Recreational Outdoor Complex) I mentioned earlier to do really whatever you want. There's even a nature trail through the forest on campus. Check out the Bass Pro up the street from campus to get even more of a outdoor experience. For the Studious person: There's the library obviously, but there's always a lot of people there and it's hard to focus in there. (Believe me, I've tried) So you can always study in your room, if you won't get distracted. The walls in the dorms aren't the thickest so sometimes you can hear people. Just be polite and ask them to stay quiet while you study. There's also mandatory quiet hours too all day, during finals week so you can get all your studying done. Also check out the study rooms in your dorm building for more study space. For the Outgoing person: Meeting people at FGCU is incredibly easy, especially in the freshman dorms. There's almost 5000 freshman in one area. You're bound to meet a few dozen new friends. Check out the pool in South Village, that's always fun. Spend some time in the Cohen Center. There's ALWAYS people in there during the week usually in the middle of the day, around 12:30 in the afternoon.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

On campus they have this Nature Trail and no one really ever goes on it, I'm not too sure why. But anyways I, all the time hear stories about people going back there at night. They're always saying how it's really scary. But anyways that's really about it. We don't really have any unusual traditions. Whenever we play another team in basketball however, the student section always just tries to yell and make fun of the other team. As anyone else would do at a sporting event I suppose. But it's a lot of fun, and definitely something that every student needs to try out.

    Bang for the buck

It really depends on your whole perspective. This topic seems as though it would be different for everyone. So, personally Love my decision to go to FGCU. I will say that there are some things that the Administration could improve, in terms of policies and such. (Won't go into too much detail) but all-in-all it's a really great place to go to school. If you like: personal space in your room, small class sizes, nice students/faculty, a beautiful campus that's not too big to where you'll have to walk far to get to class, quality education, and a fun college experience then FGCU is right for you!

    What to do for fun

I personally am a member of a greek organization on campus at FGCU, Kappa Sigma. Getting involved on campus in something like that is definitely a great idea. It really is a lot of fun. You're always on campus meeting new people, or helping someone with their work. I would definitely recommend that. But for those who would rather not, which is perfectly fine there are plenty of other fun things to do. Like sports clubs and teams, there's several areas to play sports on campus as well as whatever it is you may like to do, just ask around. There's also a bunch of fun things to do off campus at any of the 3 shopping center's close by, everything from a movie to Bass Pro Shops to glow in-the-dark mini golf.

    Food and Dining

Honestly, the food is alright. I wouldn't recommend getting a meal plan because I was naive enough to get on and it clearly wasn't worth what I was paying for it. So, if you can avoid it DON'T GET A MEAL PLAN! Just make your own food. But sometimes you can't avoid it. There's plenty of dining options on campus such as: Starbuck's, Einstein's Bagels, SubWay, Taco Bell, Organic Pizza, Jamba Juice, Blu Sushi and there's a few small convenience shops on campus too as well as the dining hall. The food in the dining hall is what really makes this score a 3/5 instead of a higher option. The food in the dining hall is for the most part is not too bad, but sometimes it is just horrible. It's as though they don't know how to cook food. For example; the rice - it's ALWAYS crunchy, who doesn't know how to cook rice?! and another thing... Egg Pizza, need I say more? As a person who loves to cook, its almost insulting that they can't cook properly most of the time, but I digress. There are a few ties however where the food is delicious.

    Dorm Life

I absolutely loved living on campus there at FGCU. The residents are always friendly, the RA staff is very professional. The rooms themselves are extremely clean when you first move in, and there's something to be said about that. You have your own room, with a door that can be locked. So you do have privacy.

    Academic Rigor

I haven't attended many other Florida institutions so perhaps my opinion is slightly biassed but nonetheless,, the academic requirements or course load isn't too hefty. But as I said before if you let it go or get lazy as many people do, including myself it's easy to do poorly in even an easier class. many of the upper classmen level classes, obviously are going to be harder. But really just getting into your zone and figuring out what works best for you is the way to go. Also, studying in the library all night isn't always a bad idea.

    Tips for prospective students

    1) There's a lot to do on and around campus, so find something you like or enjoy doing and do that. 2) If you lie on campus don't forget to always leave time to study, because deadlines and due dates will sneak up fast. 3) Don't overload your plate. Taking more than one or two hard classes at the same time could ruin your gpa, as well as cause you to lose some of your scholarships. 4) Try starting a club, its really easy. If they don't already have something like it a group of your friends can do it. 5) Go to as many of the Men's Basketball games as possible! 6) Take advantage of the Writing Center and the Tutors on campus, they're there to help. 7) Yes. THe classes for the mot part are small, unless you take something like a large math or humanities class. But no class is bigger than 180 students, unless it's an online course. Which in that case the number of student's doesn't matter. 8) Meet with your academic advisor frequently!!! 9) Don't be afraid to ask questions. 10) Try to improve the campus and the experience there at FGCU as a whole, so that the class after may have an even better experience. (That's what I always try to do)

    In three sentences

I really love it there at FGCU, the students and faculty are all really nice. The opportunities for on campus involvement are endless, there's a handful of greek organizations that fin anyone, theres also a bunch of interest as well as academic cubs. The campus is beautiful and the quality of education in my opinion is also of high quality.

    Bang for the buck

For the type of education you're receiving, it is pretty good as far as money is concerned. It's still college and still not cheap but for the locals it really isn't as bad compared to most other colleges. Nearly all on-campus sites are free for students including doctors visits (which saves a lot of money). Living off-campus may end up being cheaper in the long run however.

    Am enjoying being here

Even living off campus can mean that it is still an enjoyable place to be. There's always some kind of event going on if you're willing to look for it. Many clubs exist on campus as well as greek life, and ways to meet new people. The scenery is kind of repetitive but then again, I've lived here my whole life but I'm sure for those out-of-towners it is a great sight to see and a great environment to learn in!

    Am learning a lot

The curriculum is not only fun but interesting as well. The professors tend to focus more towards your own personal interest in the course rather than attendance. They are always readily available and try to be of help whenever they can. They try to make the courses fun and interesting even if they are boring subjects taken early in the morning. Also the work is full but consistent and intriguing. The professors aren't there to fail you, they're there to expand your knowledge of the outside world.

Great for these types of students

High SAT, but low GPA that may prevent you from entering other schools.

    Tips for prospective students

In my opinion, I think SAT scores mean more than GPA to this school.

    Bang for the buck

Although it is still a growing university, the tuition is still a bit pricey compared to competing schools such as Florida Atlantic. The dorms are also very pricey, however, they are brand new and most offer private bedrooms. Also, while other larger schools may have your entire hallmay sharing a bathroom, at FGCU, there are no more than 2-3 people per bathroom (some rooms have private bathrooms)

    Will enjoy being here

If you want a stable, beach-oriented education, FGCU is definitely a top choice.

    Will learn a lot

The professors are all very competent.

Great for these types of students

    Education students and environmental/biology students

    Tips for prospective students

Make you sure you meet with your advisor frequently and keep with with your class track. You don't want to take extra or unnecessary classes. Take advantage of all the academic opportunities that the school and campus offer to their students. Always try your best and get the best grades you can no matter what. Most of all just have a good time and enjoy yourself.

    Bang for the buck

FGCU is an extremely expensive school for out of state students. I'm paying nearly 4 times as much as in state students. Even with Scholarships and grants and tuition waivers it's still coming out to around 10,000 A semester so about 20,000 a year. It's going to be terrible when I gradate with 80,000 in student loans but I wouldn't be paying it if I didn't think the school was the best and worth it.

    Am enjoying being here

I'm so glad I moved to Florida. Not only is the weather beautiful but the surrounding community is a great place to be. The beach isn't far and there are plenty of stores and restaurants near by for enjoyment or employment opportunities.

    Am learning a lot

The classes I've taken I've learned a significant amount. There were a few classes where I feel like rather then the teacher actually teach us information they kind of just told us to read the book then take the midterm and final. On the other hand i've had some of the best teachers for my Science and Education classes.

    Bang for the buck

Not a major university. Doesn't require as much money.

    Will enjoy being here

I know several people heading out that way and from what they've seen so far, they love it.

    Will learn a lot

I hear this school has smaller class sizes, which I personally think helps a lot when it comes to learning.

Great for these types of students

Smart students who love small class sizes, people who don't want a party environment.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't come here expecting an atmosphere like UF. It is a smaller school but it is a good school. Stick it out and don't transfer after the first year, it is a good school and you will enjoy your years here. Get involved, Greek life is fun, Student Government is wonderful, and intramurals are a fun way to work out with friends.

    Bang for the buck

I am here on the Bright Future's Scholarship so I am paying relatively nothing. But the professors are good, plenty of clubs to get involved. Only problem is the sport teams aren't that good and people aren't too enthusiastic about the school. But it's time to increase our Eagle pride <3

    Am enjoying being here

I chose to come here because it is a smaller university and I would be able to thrive. Classes are small so it is easier to do well academically. The dorms in North Lake Village are wonderful, I'm a senior and I still live in them. It is not a college town, but I'm not the kind of person who goes out all the time. The key to staying busy and loving FGCU is getting involved. I do intramurals, am a part of Greek Life, I'm in the Honors Program, and I'm involved in Student Government.

    Am learning a lot

I'm a double major here so I can speak on two majors. Political Science classes can sometimes seem like a joke depending on who your teacher is. You will learn the philosophy if you want, and you will learn more about issues if you pay attention. Environmental Studies majors will have classes that seem extremely repetitive, but the science basic classes (Chem, Biology) are very challenging.

Great for these types of students

If you like smaller campuses this is the school for you. It's not too big, but not too small either. Also since there aren't as many students as the bigger universities if you want to feel like a part of a family this is the school for you.

    Tips for prospective students

If you're an incoming freshman I highly recommend living in the freshman dorms because it's more freshman oriented. Even though the dorm rooms are smaller I believe you get more out of your first year of college living there. There are more events put on for you to attend and you'll feel more part of the university as a whole.

    Bang for the buck

The school isn't that expensive and the dorms here are the nicest I've seen considering you get your own bedroom; for most universities you have to share a bedroom.

    Am enjoying being here

Even though things do usually close early around the school I still enjoy attending the school. It's nice to get away from a hectic city and be in a relaxing environment.

    Am learning a lot

Since our school is environmental friendly I am learning a lot about the environment and how to help that I probably would not have learned attending another school.

    Campus Safety

it gets dark and its a big campus and i don't always feel 100% safe mostly out of paranoia.. we could have a few more visible escorts or officers, but for the most part i feel safe.

    Greek Life

its really popular, i don't care for it but we have alot of it and it's growing!

    Clubs and Activities

frat/sorority are the most popular but we have a club for nearly anything.

Great for these types of students

    frat/sorority/bio majors

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

it's not unusal but we are very green, alot of nature trails and eco friendly locations.

    Bang for the buck

the classes are not too crowded and you have so many resources and opportunities to speak with your professor. it's a nice school for the price.

    What to do for fun

there are bars, clubs, nature trails, movie theaters, school clubs, fraternity, sororities, you name it!

    Food and Dining

we have so many options for eating on and off campus, there's something for everyone as long as you have the money,

    Dorm Life

i've never lived at the dorms due to financial reasons but i've heard they are nice.

    Academic Rigor

i graduated hs with a 4.85 and within a year my college gpa dropped below a 2.0. you have to apply yourself and not party away your scholarships and blow off classes. if you apply yourself, you will succeed, it's that simple.

    Tips for prospective students

if you live in the area, live at home and save your money. it will help your grades and keep you in line. if you absolutely won't stay home, get a job as a waiter, it is the highest earning job for our age group. if you're from out of town, live on campus, it will keep you in line rather than off campus housing, it gets very rowdy.

    In three sentences

fgcu is a great school because it is extremely eco-friendly, not too crowded, and has a multitude of resources for students. it is in a really great part of town and very face. college life there is very fun and grounded.

    Campus Safety

our campus is super safe with upd that with escort you if you don't feel safe walking by yourself, emergency alert poles every hundred yards, emergency pull cords in every dorm room, and well lit walk ways.

    Greek Life

we do have frats and sororities but they don't have their own housing yet.

    Clubs and Activities

there are way to many for me to list!

Great for these types of students

fgcu is great for students that like small personal schools where they are people and not numbers.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

you can usually find me in my dorm, at the gym in my martial arts club or working out, or getting free food at the activities on campus or in my housing complex.

    Bang for the buck

i truly love being an eagle at fgcu. i couldn't have picked a better school.

    What to do for fun

there are a ton of clubs to join like archery, martial arts, weight lifting, swimming, hockey, ect. our housing department always has fun activities to look forward to as well. these include bonfires, zombies vs human man hunt, stoplight parties, and more. there are also a lot of open mic nights, comedy shows, debates, ect on campus. you can also enjoy water sports on our lake or at our aquatic center. last but not least you can always take a shuttle to the gulf coast town center to shop, eat, or watch a movie.

    Food and Dining

i don't have a meal plan but i love cooking in my kitchen in my dorm. it also helps that there are grocery stores that are between five and fifteen minutes away. there are also a lot of restaurants that are perfect for any budget not even five minutes away for eating out.

    Dorm Life

the r.as here are super nice and extremely helpful. the dorms are also spacious and since this is a newer school the appliances and ac are up to date and the buildings are in no way run down.

    Academic Rigor

fgcu may be small but you still learn just as much as you would at any state university.

    Tips for prospective students

i would defiantly apply for housing early because i personally applied late and ended up in an over flow dorm with 5 other girls.

    In three sentences

i think that fgcu is an awesome school to attend. there are friendly people and lots of fun activities and clubs to enjoy. it's the perfect place for students that don't want to attend large universities but still want a great education.

the only down side about greek life is that since our university is small and pretty new we don't have sorority and frat houses.

    What to do for fun

you can go to sporting events on campus, or you can go off campus, there is even a beach on campus that you can use. fgcu is close to just about everything, across the way is gulf coast town center, and just a few miles up the road is miromar outles.

    Food and Dining

there are a lot of food options on campus including subway and starbucks. the franchise places are always good. the dinning halws like sovi dinning you have to be careful because there food gets old very fast, you do not want to eat there every day.

there is special housing for freshman. south village is the perfect place to start your college life. rooms for 2 people with a lot of privacy, each person gets a separate room while sharing bathrooms and a foyer. at south village is sovi, our cafeteria full of delicious food and open all day. north lake is a step away from freshman and it has much more activities including the pool, an auxiliary gym and the beach. but if you prefer to be more independent, there is coastal and west lake, still considered student housing, but are more apartment like and less regulated by ra's.

Throughout FGCU, the University Police Department has blue emergency poles. The police are on the clock 24/7 on campus, which can be utilized if you find yourself at the library on campus really late. If you need to be driven to your car or dorms by one of the police because you're worried about how dark it is and you're alone, just press the blue emergency pole or call UPD on your cell. The parking garages also have cameras throughout them.

    Greek Life

    Clubs and Activities

FGCU offers multiple clubs on campus. From sexual orientation, religion, and just common interests. You can even become apart of the Programming Board, which is in charge of campus-wide activities and our concerts.

Great for these types of students

Great for everyone unless you want to go to a really populated college, like the University of Central Florida.

A lot of students who are stuck on campus, because their classes are spread throughout the day, find themselves taking a power nap in one of the lounge chairs on the 3rd floor of the library by the huge windows in the back. You might feel weird doing it at first until you see how people actually will come and nap.

    Bang for the buck

    Multiple scholarship options!

    What to do for fun

FGCU is surrounded by two outdoor malls, which are both within walking distance. Miller's Ale House in Gulf Coast Town Center is a favorite get-together food spot for FGCU students. FGCU is also close to Ale Mary's, Uptown Larry's, and RockHouse, which are local student aged bars and nightlife. If you're interested in hookah, there's a local hookah lounge right down the road called Layla Hookah Lounge (right by Uptown Larry's). On campus, students can enjoy the Waterfront which allows students to tan and relax on the lakes beach. They also have power boating and sailboats you can use on the lake. A lot of students stay busy with intramurals and Sorority/Fraternity events too!

    Food and Dining

FGCU offers a wide selection of dining options on campus. From Jamba Juice and Blu Sushi to Taco Bell and Subway, you'll have enough choices.

    Dorm Life

The dorms constantly have activities for the freshman. The Resident Assistants are usually very friendly.

    Academic Rigor

Some courses might come easy to some, while other courses may seem impossible.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't overload yourself with courses your first year unless you KNOW you can handle it. I chose to do 16 hours, Biology included, and it was an overload! Listen to advice given by your advisers. The best advising you will receive is when you're accepted into your intended majors' school advising.

    In three sentences

I am currently a sophomore at FGCU. As a student who was use to having a lifetime of private school education, attending FGCU felt right for me. The campus is big enough where you could just be a number or a someone who everyone knows.

The campus is beautiful and not too big or too small. The dorm rooms are a lot better than other colleges' where you have to share a small room with someone and a bathroom with an entire floor. Their dorm rooms have bathrooms and most are split up with a wall in between you and your roommate, giving you more personal space.

    Bang for the buck

This is why I chose FGCU. It's not a huge University, but you feel like it's big enough! It is so pretty and new compared to some of the other older Universities. It's not so big that you get lost! It's close enough to home, but not too close. Everyone is so super friendly here. All the staff wants to make sure that each student has the same ability to do their best! I love it here. I picked the right college for me.

DON'T EAT AT SOVI DINING. other than that, the food is good, but you get a little tiered of eating at the same places every week. Good thing most dorms have their own kitchen.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is very different at FGCU. Once you don't live in SOVI it's like living in an apartment complex with all your friends. North Lake and West Lake dorms have kitchens and everyone has their own room. Its the best situation for leaving to live with other people but not have to share your personal space all the way.

I found FGCU's location to be just perfect. I always knew I wanted to go away to college but just not out of state. I am only 1 1/2 hrs away from home making so convenient for traveling. Being a fairly new university its size is not overwhelming, yet still growing.

    Bang for the buck

The campus location is well settled but also has several well-known retail stores that are well within driving distances. The campus also provides shuttle and public bus services for your use.

    What to do for fun

I find there are so many activities to choose from. Every dorm building has their own game rooms, meeting rooms to hang out, and conference rooms to study. We also have an aquatic center and lake area that is well put to use.

    Food and Dining

Several places to choose from which makes it convenient. The only problem for me was the meal plan prices,. I found them to be too high.

    Dorm Life

Wow, great dorms!! Rooms are not as small as I thought they would be. You have the best of two worlds, your private room as well as having a roommate. There is much to do on campus with so many activities. There is something for everyone to do.

    Academic Rigor

Classes will be tough, but while keeping your focus, you can achieve a good passing grade. There are several resources you are able to use at your request.

    Tips for prospective students

My advise for future students is to apply as early as possible, as FGCU has been making itself well known. If possible take several practice courses for your SAT and ACT tests. Take them as early as possible and several times as your scores will improve.

    In three sentences

I feel I am going to love living out here. LIving in the freshman dorms is making it so easy for me to adjust and make new friends. We are all starting a new chapter in our lives together.

FGCU's campus is kinda in the swamp/woods. The campus itself is much safer than Ft. Myers or Naples.

    Clubs and Activities

As a graduate student, I really wasn't involved in clubs and activities. I wish I could have been though (although the pickings are slim).

Great for these types of students

If you care more about getting a decent, affordable education and not so much about sports (although FGCU's basketball teams are great), the party scene, or nationwide reputation.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

    There're alligators on campus (seriously)!

    Bang for the buck

I believe that tuition is standardized among all of the FL state schools, but when comparing FGCU to its counterparts, FGCU had the lowest fees of anyone.

    What to do for fun

Take a road trip! Sanibel Island is close by and is absolutely beautiful!

    Food and Dining

The food is good and nice amount of options available given the size.

    Dorm Life

Never lived in them; but they look amazing!

    Academic Rigor

I really wish I could put 3.5 stars here. Most classes are manageable when you study. I've had a few courses where I was lost, but the professors are always willing to help. I've been underwhelmed by the academic competitiveness on campus though; a good part of the student body just wants to get by.

    Tips for prospective students

Try to get away from Ft. Myers a bit. The area is heavily geared towards retirees. Also accept FGCU for what it is, and don't compare it to other schools that you wish you could have attended. It's a great university if you maintain a sense of pride in it!

    In three sentences

FGCU is an up and coming public university in Florida. It does lack in regards to resources, extracurricular activities and prestige. But the education is great and the university fills an important void in higher education in Southwest Florida.

    Campus Safety

There are blue police poles on every corner of campus that are for safety. If you need assistance walking to your car, the campus PD are more than happy to do that for your. If it is late at night and you are just getting off work, the police will walk you from your car to your dorm. They are very friendly.

    Greek Life

I am not apart of greek life for personal reasons. My old roomate and some of my friends are apart of the greek life on campus and they love it. FGCU should add more sorrorities anf fraternities to campus since there arent many there now.

    Clubs and Activities

I feel that there should be more clubs on campus or at least more activities to do. There are already some great clubs and activities but some of the clubs are innactive or dont have anything going on. I want to start my own criminology club and have exciting field trips to learn from or have guest speakers.

    Bang for the buck

Since FGCU is still up and coming and is the newest university in Florida, the prices are somewhat cheap compared to other universities. I am not saying college is cheap by any means! But I would say this college is worth the money.

    What to do for fun

FGCU is a small campus in a small town. For fun, there are a few bars to go to, tons of shopping, and of course the beach is 30 minutes away! There is also tons of restaraunts, movie theaters, and parks to go to as well. Almost everything is a drive though. There are shuttles to the Gulf Coast Town Center which is nice.

    Food and Dining

I personally dont like too much of the food on campus. It gives you stomach aches and makes you go to the bathroom every five minutes. Literally. Some of the food is good though, like subay. Cant go wrong there!

    Dorm Life

I lived in the dorms my first year. I was actually the first class to be in the new dorms so it was brand new, fresh, and clean! They are kind of like prisons/hospitals though because you need a key card to get into every hallway or door. Every hallway has an RA who keeps watch over everything and makes sure things are safe. Most of the RA's battle against each other to see who can have the most fun and there are a lot of constests. It is fun and another great way to meet lots of new people.

    Academic Rigor

Some of the classes are hard and some of them are fun and easy. This goes for any college though. I think that the classes are what you make them. If you dont study and get bad grades, you will complain that the class is hard, If you put a little effort into your school work (your future!) it will pay off I promise.

    Tips for prospective students

For prospective students, I would say to come to this college prepared for actual college. It is a great school that is advancing everyday and you need to be prepared to advance with it. You should also join as many clubs or organizations as you can. Campus life is fun and the more you are involved, the more you can put on your resume and you can meet tons of people.

    In three sentences

FGCU is very technologically advanced in the way it presents itself to students, faculty, and visitors. It is very clean and organized and I love going to school everyday. FGCU is up and coming and will be one of the top schools in the state of Florida.

The security on campus is awesome. There are emergency numbers, blue light emergency polls that connect you directly to an operator, and regular security that drives around all the time. You will never feel vulnerable.

    What to do for fun

The water front is my favorite place to go to have fun. Its like having the beach in your backyard. The offer things like wake boarding, banana boating, and kayaking. The campus gym is also great to keep in shape and keep of the freshman 15.

    Food and Dining

The food and dining selections on campus are great! We have everything from sushi to Mexican and good old homemade style food.

    Dorm Life

I do not live in a dorm but I have heard that for new incoming students it is a great way to build friendships. It also allows students the chance to be on there own.

As far as I know, campus safety is really great. I have not heard any complaints, nor have their been any serious issues.

    Greek Life

I'm unsure about Greek life. However, I know there are many students on campus that partake in it. They always wear their shirts around campus and have many events on the main lawn.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs on campus, however they do not advertise them well.

Great for these types of students

FGCU is great for athletic students. Being in Florida, we can play sports all year long. FGCU takes pride in their athletes and promotes them well.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

An unusual location on campus is our own personal beach. There is a man made beach on campus near some of the dorms.

    Bang for the buck

I'm a Florida resident, so FGCU was a great choice for me as far as tuition is concerned. It is an awesome way to save money, and get the same education you would at any other university.

    What to do for fun

FGCU is really big on sports. So for fun, there is almost always a sporting event going on everyday of the week. There are also many local malls, as well as the beach to entertain you.

    Food and Dining

There are multiple fast restaraunts for students to eat at. These include Einstein Bagels, Subway, and Chik fil A.

    Dorm Life

I can't rate this because I did not live in the dorms. However, I lived in the dorms at my previous university, and I fell dorm life is essential to obtaining the full college experience.

    Academic Rigor

The academic rigor at FGCU is very low. A high GPA was easy to obtain, and large amounts of studying were not necessary for me to get straight A's.

    Tips for prospective students

I would advise future students to live on campus. Living on campus is a sure way to meet people and make connections. It also makes the college transition much easier.

    In three sentences

I would rate FGCU a 7 out of 10. While it is a great university for academics, I was a commuter student and didn't really feel like I was a part of the community there. I feel like they need to do more for studemt involvement.

    Dorm Life

It's nice as a freshman if you live in South Village, or as an upperclassman if you're lucky enough to get into West Lake, but North Lake - where most students that live on campus end up - isn't super nice, although its nicer than other schools' dorms.

    Campus Safety

Never have I felt as if I were in danger. Campus police always monitoring, and there's always somebody nearby. Things happen once in a blue moon but it can happen anywhere you go.

    Greek Life

The only thing that this university does not have when it comes to Greek life is the sorority and fraternity housing. Supposedly it keeps students safer, but I feel like it'd be good if we had it.

Great for these types of students

This university is more for students that like to have fun, but also like a calm enviroment. Calm, friendly, and small are probably the best ways to describe it.

    What to do for fun

Mall and outlets not even five minutes away, gym, basketball courts, beach, school-affiliated activities, and many more other things!

    Food and Dining

There is not too much of a variety. After a while you get used to having the same thing around but there are shopping centers near the university that also has restraurants and other dining places near by.

    Dorm Life

I do not live in the dorms but from what I hear, there is always something to do, and you're always meeting new people.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on the courses you take, some are more challenging than others. So far my teachers are very helpful and caring, and if you do not get the assistance you need in the classroom, there are many other ways to get it , either in the center of academic acheivement or in your professors office hours.

    Tips for prospective students

Acceptance wise-try your very best to get the highest score possible on your SAT/ACT because it is becoming a challenging University to get accepted to. If your GPA is not the highest but your scores are good, don't shy away from writting an admission essay (which is not required). Once you do get accepted, join many clubs and be yourself! You'll fit in just fine.

    In three sentences

I would walk around campus at night, the only thing you have to worry about is getting eaten alive by mosquitoes!

    Greek Life

We have a variety of greek organizations but no greek housing....yet!

    Clubs and Activities

There is a club for EVERYONE at FGCU, if you don't want to get involved, that is on you! They even let you start your own club if you and fellow students can't find anything to join!

    Bang for the buck

FGCU is a great school for a great price. For in state living on campus, I am spending around 12,000 a semester. Which is 24,000 a year. Not a bad price considering all my fees, and utilities are paid for as well as my tuition. My last school I was paying 18,000 and I still had to purchase books!

    What to do for fun

There is so much to do for fun! We are right across the road from GCTC, so there are movies and shopping. We have movies on the lawn about once a month, our own private beach, where you can play volley ball, or go paddle boarding. Down the road there is Naples beach, and Fort Myers beach, and don't forget Basketball games! Many things to do at FGCU!

    Food and Dining

Food and dining are okay at FGCU. We have what you call Eagle dollars and they are basically meal plan extra money that you can spend at any restaurant on campus. In Sovi or South lake for freshmen, there is a dining hall, I heard that it has it's days to where it is good and bad, but I haven't tried it for myself. I love having my own kitchen and with Target being right across the road, it is super easy to cook good meals :)

    Dorm Life

Dorm life rocks at FGCU. I live in North Lake Village and I LOVE IT! I am close to campus but, still have my own kitchen and private room. We are close to the gym and not to far away from the laundry facilities, and our RA's are so much fun! GO NLV!

    Academic Rigor

Some professors, (just like every where else) are good and some are bad. I am a first year, first semester student at FGCU and I have not had any problems with my professors, and I have used our tutoring center to help me in struggling courses.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply early. Arrive about an hour before class because parking is horrible, and make sure to register for the earliest possible registration.

    In three sentences

I love FGCU, GO EAGLES! It is a great green small campus, focused on education and student involvement. Can't wait for the next 4 years!

    What to do for fun

There are a lot of fun things to do in and around FGCU campus. You will find tons of different posters hung up on the announcement walls and will see gathering and or hear of projects throughout the days.

    Food and Dining

I haven't ate too much at FGCU, but they have a good amount diversity. They have a Starbucks and a pizza place, along with a few other specialties. They have a meal plan you can buy if you are interested.

    Dorm Life

I don't live in a dorm and don't know anyone they has really talked about it. You don't have to get a dorm on campus, but it is literally on campus in the same area you enter.

    Academic Rigor

Even though I don't have much experience in FGCU only being a dual-enrollment student, I can say the teachers are dedicated to teaching and they are friendly and helpful. The school tries really hard to help everyone. Though some of the students act lazy and don't seem to be crazy into each course, you can tell everyone is there to learn.

    Tips for prospective students

Prospective students, try to figure out if you know what major you really want. If not, look to get a basic AA degree and just feel around. Your first year counselor can be very helpful, so take advantage. They know the school, they receive feedback from all the students, don't be afraid to ask questions.

    In three sentences

A diverse college, with a great group of people. FGCU wants to receive a great education and will help you anyway they can. It is in a great location and friendly all around.

    Campus Safety

The UPD is always roaming around, keeping us safe. There are very few incidents that ever require their attention, outside of speeding.

    Greek Life

Greek life is a little limited, at the moment. There are plenty of the usual fraternities and sororities to join, however there is no Greek row and no plans for one anytime soon.

    Clubs and Activities

The number of Registered Student Organizations is approaching the 100 mark. There is something for everyone!

Great for these types of students

Goal-oriented, career-minded students will have no problem succeeding at FGCU. Undecideds have a lot of choice, as well, including the new Music Therapy program, very soon.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is a new pavilion going up where the FGCU Jazz Ensemble will likely be performing several concerts each year.

    Bang for the buck

The universities in Florida always want to raise tuition. Between scholarships, financial aid and loans, it's pretty easy to cover each semesters tuition and books. It is more expensive to live on campus than it is off. If you have a vehicle, consider the surround neighborhoods for house or apartment rentals.

    What to do for fun

Gulf Coast Town Center is only a five minute drive, as are the Miromar Outlets. Both have lots of shopping, food choices, movie theaters and other activities on a weekly basis. The beaches are about 45 minutes away and usually worth the drive when it's hot.

    Food and Dining

The food selection on campus is usually quite limiting. The area surrounding FGCU is packed full of other restaurants and cafes and anytime we get the chance, we eat off campus.

    Dorm Life

Many of my friends who live on campus usually spend very little time in the dorms. They are always looking for something else to do. There are not a lot of things to do on campus, so staying put can often lead to boredom. Of course, any fun is dependent on the company you keep, so make great friends!

    Academic Rigor

As a Music Education major, my schedule is considerably more demanding than many other degree programs, but the core academics are challenging and, with the right instructor, usually lots of fun.

    Tips for prospective students

Ask questions and always demand answers. Someone, somewhere can always get you answers. Be active in student organizations. FGCU is still small enough that individuals can make a big difference.

    In three sentences

FGCU is a very welcoming school. It is relatively small and therefore more community-like than the larger state universities. The culture is geared toward inclusion for all students and an understanding of how we impact our environment.

Starbucks on campus, what a great thing.

    Bang for the buck

It's expensive, but all colleges are.

    What to do for fun

There's always something going on on campus, and joining clubs provide great opportunities to meet new people and try new things.

    Food and Dining

I have cilliac disease, which means I can't consume gluten, and they try to provide something gluten-free, but there's no variety.

    Dorm Life

These are the nicest dorms I've ever seen! My RA was perfect. She knew what she was doing, enforced rules, but was leanant at the same time.

    Academic Rigor

They challenge you, and force you to learn, definitely. Communication with the teachers is key.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't let your first year bring you down. It's a big change from high school, but once you learn to adapt it's a smooth ride.

    In three sentences

Florida Gulf Coast University is a great school with a lot of opportunities to get involved and be all that you can be. If FGCU had my intended major, aerospace engineering, I would definitely complete my 4 year plan here. The teachers are willing to help and the classes are the perfect size.

Cadillac Jacks is also a popular place to go on the weekends. There is also a couple hookah lounges around (laylas & sphynx) that are fun.

If you were hesitant about leaving home for college, FGCU is the perfect place. Most people are from close areas and are sharing their home away from home experiences together.

    Bang for the buck

Paying for a dorm like this is definitely worth every penny.

    What to do for fun

My friends and I just enjoy spending time with each other in our rooms, the television rooms, or even just sitting in the middle of the hallway. Occasionally we will bring out a board game and just get a huge group of students from our floor involved. There is a game room on my fourth floor with a ping pong table and table soccer. Of course that is all just things to do on campus.

    Food and Dining

South Village Dining Hall really never lets me down. The only downside to the dining hall is that it is generally the same food over and over again. You have to make your own variation with what they give everyday, but don't be fooled, there is plenty of food.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are one of the main reasons I picked FGCU. I love how you get your own individual bedroom and only have to share a bathroom with one (or two, depending on which dorm you are in) other person. The RAs are the nicest and most helpful people you will ever meet. The facilities are always clean and user friendly, from the mini gym to the communal kitchen.

    Academic Rigor

Like any other school, the work load and difficulty depends on the classes you take and the professors who teach them. It is a tremendous help to be in such small classes so that if you ever do have questions or need help, it is easy to build an academic relationship with your professor. There is always free tutoring on campus for almost every subject.

    Tips for prospective students

There isn't as much pressure here as there would be if you were going somewhere else. Living in the dorms is great as long as you take advantage of the people around you and make all the friends you can. Cars are not necessary to get around the campus. It will take you an average of 15 minutes to walk to and from the main academic buildings.

    In three sentences

Florida Gulf Coast University is a great school with great people. The class sizes are all small and allow for better one-on-one time with your professor. The dorms are amazing because you get the experience of a roommate and the ability to have total privacy.

I would definitely recommend living on campus which is something I was not able to do. It is much more convenient and makes it easier to get involved! Also do not be afraid of asking for help! Professors offer office hours - use them!!! and free tutoring!

    In three sentences

I absolutely love FGCU. The size of our school is absolutely perfect, you can actually walk through campus and be able to recognize people. It's a perfect school with great programs and instructors.

    What to do for fun

The campus provides a small, yet comfortable beach, along with volleyball and basketball courts, soccer fields, and a gym.

    Food and Dining

This campus provides many student favorites when it involves dining; from Blue Sushi to Starbucks. As it is also conveniently placed with restaurants, convenience stores and grocery stores surrounding the campus.

    Dorm Life

I personally have not lived in any of the dorms, but I only hear positive feedback. Such as the comfort students feel living in them, as well as convenience.

    Tips for prospective students

I highly recommend this school if you are more comfortable with a smaller university environment and are interested in participating in an eco-friendly college.

    In three sentences

The staff is very helpful and informed with the school and their students. The campus appears to be extremely environment friendly. Also, the curriculum seems to be very easy-going to follow in order to set you in the right path.

    Food and Dining

The food and dining here on campus is great! I feel like my school does a good job catering to all the different types of lifestyles of eating for everybody. On main campus they have foods for people who are into the fast food life style with Chik-Fil-A to even the organic lifestyle with Jason's Truly Organic Pizza. Some of the restaurants on main campus also delivery to those students who don't have a ride over there to get food. The All you can eat 7am- 12am SoVi Dining is also a great place to eat. They are open from the hours of dawn to dusk to work around the work and school schedule. They have everything from a salad bar to your classics of pizza or a burgers and fries. They also have great breakfast food.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life here is great. The facility here is clean and has great security. They were rated number one of the safest campuses in Florida and in the top 20 for safest campuses in the nation. The dorms here aren't the traditional, two in a room dorm rooms. Here at FGCU there are 4 different housing setups: single private, single studio, 2 single room, 3 single room(there are also 2 big off-campus housing communities). These rooms allow for diversity and options for students to pick their own roommates as well as have privacy at the same time. The RA's are very friendly and are on call during the night to assist students with any problem they may have from 12am-12am.

    Academic Rigor

Academic Rigor is high here. They do all they can to make sure you are put in the right classes so you aren't wasting time, and provide a great abundance of tutoring and workshop opportunities for the different classes that you pay be enrolled in. They also provide times where you can work one-on-one with the teachers personally and ask/review any questions or things you are having trouble with in their classes. The school also offers honor roll and academic awards for students how achieve those high GPAs

FGCU is a small university but despite size is extremely fun school. The most likable attribute of the school is the full access beach on campus where you can rent kayaks, paddle boards, and motorboats. FGCU also has tons of spirit and a fantastic basketball team.

    Campus Safety

FGCU has their own police department. Our campus is considered one of the safest schools in the nation! Also, a little tip, don't get caught speeding on campus, you'll get pulled over and you will get a ticket.

    Greek Life

Greek life here at FGCU is pretty strong. We don't have Sorority or Fraternity houses, so that makes the costs for joining a lot lower than any other campus.

    Clubs and Activities

If you want to get involved in a club at FGCU, you won't have trouble finding one. There is pretty much a club for anything, so get involved!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Our school is also a green campus so our buildings are all energy efficient. We also have our own solar panel field that generates about 10% of power on campus! And we are surrounded by a lot of swamp area. Seeing an alligator in one of the many ponds on campus on your way to class is pretty common over here, so don't get freaked out!

    What to do for fun

There is so much to do on campus. We share a lake with the country club on the other side, and we have our own waterfront! Here, you can rent kayaks and paddle boards, you can get sailing lessons, learn to water ski, or you can just lay out on the beach! We also have an Olympic sized swimming pool and a regular pool. Our newest addition is the resort style pool located in the freshman housing complex. Fort Myers Beach is only about 20 minutes from campus too!Needless to say, you will never get bored here at FGCU!

    Food and Dining

There are a lot of options for dining on campus at FGCU. Our dining hall is located in South Village, which is our freshman village. The food here is alright, but I hear a lot of people complaining about it. If you get a room with a full kitchen or kitchenette, you don't really need a meal plan. (The meal plans are pretty expensive, too.) On the main campus we have Chick-fil-a Express, Blu Sushi, Subway, Taco Bell, and a few other choices.

    Dorm Life

Dorms here at FGCU are great. We have a whole village for only freshman! This makes the first year transition even easier because you have roommates that you can relate to. The housing options are great because there are so many, but if you want your first pick make sure you get your application in ASAP and register for orientation, otherwise, you'll probably end up with your last choice.

    Academic Rigor

The courses at FGCU are about the same as other state universities. But, because class sizes are smaller than other universities, the professors can get more engaged with the students and that really makes a difference!

    Tips for prospective students

FGCU is the perfect campus for students that are nervous about the high school to college transition. The freshman advisors make it easy for you to ask questions about classes or campus life. Orientation is a great experience because even if you don't end up attending FGCU, it will help you with the transition into any college scene. Our campus is a lot smaller compared to other state universities and that may be perfect for students that don't want to jump right into the college world. (Plus, you can always transfer!) If you are on the fence about FGCU, book a campus tour!

    In three sentences

FGCU is a fun, gorgeous and involved campus. The classes are a good size and the teachers are great! The staff are very involved and want to see you succeed while you are here and after you graduate!

    What to do for fun

Gulf coast town center is a few minutes away and has good nightlife and sports bars. Also, germain arena is within minutes and provides sports and entertainment shows.

    Food and Dining

They have a decent cafe and eating selection on campus. Gulf coast town center is two minutes away and provides a great selection of restaurants and places to grab a quick bit to eat.

    Dorm Life

Never lived in the dorms but hung out there. Pretty well secured area.

    Academic Rigor

The sciences and upper 3-4 year courses I found more challenging.

    Tips for prospective students

Do well on the easier courses, then if you don't do as well in the upper level courses you can still maintain a decent gpa.

    In three sentences

FGCU does not have a huge student to professor ratio. FGCU requires enrollment in classes such as environmental awareness that may not necessarily relate to your degree. The college campus has a beautiful lake and is filled with wildlife, you don't get the big city feeling on campus.

    Campus Safety

The campus like any other is safe, but unlike other campuses, FGCU has blue emergency stations everywhere (near dorms and on campus) where police dispatchers will come quickly.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a lot of fun clubs to join, but some require you to research and take action upon contacting them yourself.

    Food and Dining

Don't get a meal plan. The food at Sovi looks great, but the Sovi Shits are real. Other fast food places ( Chick fil a, Taco Bell, Bly sushi, home zone, organic pizza, subway, Jamba Juice, the link) are pretty good and have fast service.

    Dorm Life

It all depends on where you live. If you live in any of the freshmen dorm, you'll have to share a bathroom and toilet with your roommates. Osprey dorm (also for freshmen) has more of a kitchen area with a full fridge and microwave and sink, but no oven/stove. Freshmen can choose to live in North lake. It has a living room area and actual full kitchen, and two bathrooms, one with a toilet and shower and the other with a shower and tub. Every single dorm, everyone has their own room. But north lake you get a mirror closet whereas in south lake, you have open space.

    Academic Rigor

Not that hard, but it all depends on the person taking the classes. Science classes tend to be the hardest.

    What to do for fun

One of the top attractions at FGCU is the waterfront. You can rent sailboats, paddleboards, canoes, the list goes on and on. There is also an aquatics center along with a gym to keep students busy.

    Food and Dining

To be honest, the food at SoVi dining (freshman dining) isn't too great. However, there are all sorts of places to eat on campus from Chick Fil A to Taco Bell. A meal plan will definitely make your life easier if you choose to live on campus.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are great, especially if you are a freshman! Living in south village your first year is a whole new experience. There are 4 dorm buildings, soon to be 5 as well as a pool, work out rooms in every building and the freshman cafeteria in the middle of it all. Most rooms are shared by two people, you have your own rooms but the two half bathrooms are shared. You are constantly surrounded by other freshman in these dorms so I highly suggest living here for your first year!

    Academic Rigor

There are all kinds of opportunities for tutoring. Some professors may have SI's in their classrooms that hold their own tutoring sessions, the library has a specific room for tutoring all kinds of subjects. There are plenty of study rooms that you can use. Most professors want to see you succeed, so definitely use all of the tools FGCU provides!

    Tips for prospective students

Definitely take a tour of the school if you are thinking about coming here. The tour guides provide you with tons of information and you'll fall in love with the school as soon as you see what it has to offer! One of the most important things in college is to get involved. Definitely try and join a few clubs, rush for a sorority or fraternity, or try out for a sports team/club. The more you get involved with, the more people you will meet which will mean a better time in college for you.

    In three sentences

Florida Gulf Coast University is a very environmentally friendly school, which is one of the reasons why I chose it. It is also a fairly new school with small classroom sizes so you are able to get more out of the class. The student body is also smaller than most universities, so I found it much easier to handle when I first started here.

    Campus Safety

I have had no issues and I have heard of nothing bad happening on campus. I always see police officers and I always feel safe on campus and in my dorm.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many clubs and so many different activities on campus, there is even a beach where you can surf and wake board and a ton of other things. It is never a dull moment at Florida Gulf Coast.

Great for these types of students

I think this campus is great for anyone, whether you're shy or outgoing. There is definitely something here for everyone and person here for everyone.

    Bang for the buck

I think you get a lot for what you spend to go here. Especially with the dorm halls and the classes. The campus is so beautiful and is something I personally look forward to seeing every day, as they spared no expense in building it.

    What to do for fun

Definitely go to the sports games and join the Dirty Birds it is another way to make friends and get out of the dorms. Also I hear greek life is a great thing here, however I am not apart of it.

    Food and Dining

The dining hall in south village is not something I would recommend but is something I deal with as it is a source for food. There are plenty of options on main campus tho that are a lot better.

    Dorm Life

Each dorm hall provides the students with your own room. There is no sharing a room here and it is fantastic. The only thing you share is a bathroom. I would suggest Osprey Hall, the rooms are bigger and you get a couch, microwave, fridge, and bigger shower to share with 2 other people.

    Academic Rigor

The teachers I have had so far have been fantastic. I am learning more than I ever thought. The course work is hard enough to challenge me but is not too hard that I get confused, which is the way I like it. Course work and academic honesty is taken very seriously here and I love that it is.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you get involved in everything you can and want to, but do not overwhelm yourself, studies come first. Go into everything you do with a good attitude and open mind, try new things and just have fun. This school is great for almost an interests you may have. I have no complaints and I simply love it here.

    Greek Life

Greek Life is great! 5 sororities and 6 fraternities. It's fun and there a lot of events where we are all together.

    Clubs and Activities

A LOT of different clubs, for every type of student. There's even a Try New Things Club, Improv, TWLOHA, Active Minds, different political clubs, French Club, etc

    What to do for fun

A lot of on campus clubs, housing events, etc. One bar that everyone goes to- Keys Bar.

    Food and Dining

A lot of different choices on campus. Some healthy choices. Pita Pit which is off campus delivers anywhere on campus, and so does the nearby Jimmy Johns. Chipotle is coming to the Gulf Coast Town Center, which is 5 minutes north of the school.

    Dorm Life

I loved living on campus last year. RAs have a lot of different (free!!!) events so if you don't have anything to do on the weekend, now you do

    Academic Rigor

Depending on your major. General Biology is the highest dropped class, with probably statistics somewhere after it.

    Tips for prospective students

Live on campus your first year, especially if you don't have a car. Make sure you apply for financial aid because first year housing is kind of pricey, but saves you gas and the heart attacks from driving in the parking garages. Parking on campus is kind of hard, but that's because there are only 4 parking garages off- campus students can park in before 5 and after 5 is when anyone can park on campus, even the on campus students

    In three sentences

Good school, good atmosphere. Greek life is awesome. Not being in greek life is awesome. A lot of clubs.

    What to do for fun

Gulf Coast Town Center is located five minutes down the street, which is always fun. They have the on-campus beach, and intramural and club sports!

    Food and Dining

I think there should be more options for dining and perhaps additional locations for dining, everything is condensed so it is much more crowded and hard to get food on time.

    Dorm Life

I am a commuter student, but have friends that live in the dorms. The dorms are AWESOME! The Ritz Carlton of all college dorms.

    Academic Rigor

Classes are hard, but if you put the time in results will show. Persistence is key, and getting to know the professors and coming to class everyday definitely makes a difference.

    Tips for prospective students

I am a commuter student, if you have the choice to live on or off-campus, choose on-campus. Living on-campus makes things more convenient and easier for you to meet people.

    What to do for fun

There are game rooms in the buildings of South Lake and a shopping centre is close by as well. The pool and nature walks are also fun things to do. There is usually an event going on almost weekly and there are even library lawn movies.

    Food and Dining

The food quality of the dining hall ranges from good to bad depending on the day and the hour that it is visited. Constants include having a built to order sandwich, pasta and different kinds of pizza, meaning that they are offered everyday after eleven. On the main campus are Taco Bell, Starbucks, Subway, Chik-Fil-A, and other food places.

    Dorm Life

FGCU has three main housing options: West Lake, North Lake and South Lake. South Lake is for freshman only and has the dining hall in the same area, it is close to the arts complex. North Lake is a bit closer to the main campus but has no dining hall but apartment styled dorms. There are quiet hours in the dorms but some people do not follow them. Laundromats are provided in the buildings of South Lake Village.

    Academic Rigor

Classes are challenging but easy to keep up with if one puts in enough work to be successful. The professors know what they are doing and teach effectively. Many courses are offered from general classes to electives such as environmental humanities. Some of the classes even have parts in their curriculum to earn service learning hours.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not overload yourself on courses or work, there is a lot of fun to be had on campus. The meal plan is a bit expensive and the food quality changes between good and not so good. Allow at least twenty minutes of walking when living on campus to arrive to your class on time, some professors have attendance grades. Umbrellas are handy devices because of all the rain, there will be times when you have to walk in it to get to class.

    In three sentences

The campus is spacious but not so much that it takes forever to walk to class from any point on the main campus or dorms. It has nature trails that are seemingly everywhere and are open to visitors. The air is very clean and the grass is almost always green, it is very beautiful.

    Clubs and Activities

This school offers so much in clubs and activities that everyone can enjoy, but I'd recommend playing in sports clubs to have fun, stay in shape, and meet friends. Rugby for example is an amazing, exciting sport and, just like for all sports clubs, no experience is required, we'll teach you how to play! In sports clubs you play against other colleges and have the opportunity to keep advancing until nationals just like in athletics. It's serious competition against other teams in your division and it's incredible fun.

    What to do for fun

There are many club sports and intramural sports available on campus. There are also clubs, like glee, and facilities, like the fitness center or the pool, you can go to on campus. Just off campus is the Gulf Coast Town Center at one side with a movie theater, clothing stores, restaurants, and cool activities, like glow mini golf, that you can do, and Miromar Outlet which is full of designer stores selling their products at a discounted price. About 4 miles from campus is Coconut Point Mall which is basically the same as Gulf Coast Town Center, but with different stores and restaurants. The school has an Outdoor Pursuits division that holds adventures, like ski trips and learning air sports, open to students. There are also university sanctioned concerts, i.e. Nest Fest and Eaglepalooza, with celebrity artists.

    Food and Dining

Chick-Fil-A, Taco Bell, Truly Organic Pizza, Blu Sushi, Subway, and an all you can eat buffet on campus.

    Dorm Life

You'll meet some amazing friends in your dorms, but they're a bit expensive, as they are for all universities, but FGCU's dorms are still cheaper than most. South Village dorms are especially expensive, but they are very new and quite nice. North Village dorms just look and feel kind of out dated, but it's definitely fun living there and cheaper. West Lake is off campus, bigger, and not too expensive of what you're getting, but not open to freshman.

    Academic Rigor

Most classes are a pretty challenging here if you slack at all, but just going to your classes and doing your work, even if you don't completely understand it, will most likely get you at least a C. Just go to the free tutoring or student instructed sessions, study hard, and you should be fine.

    Tips for prospective students

If you're going to live off campus, live close because driving more than 15 minutes is a pain to deal with and trying to find a parking spot in the garages when you're late or only 5 minutes early is almost impossible. Take advantage of the tutors and your professors' office hours. Also use Grade Forgiveness wisely, please.

    In three sentences

It's a small/medium sized school as far as colleges go, but it's growing by leaps and bounds every semester. There are quiet areas to get studying done, many excellent professors, and the university hosts plenty of fun events and activities during the year to relieve student stress and get everyone involved. There's also a beach on campus with boats for water sports, kayaks, and other equipment for water activities all free!!

    Campus Safety

There are alarm stations all over the campus that you may call the university police department from. There is a campus police department and the officers will be seen frequently on campus.

    Greek Life

The Greek life on this campus is quickly growing, with a new fraternity or sorority every year. Greek life is highly involved on this campus.

    Clubs and Activities

There is a club for almost everything on this campus, and even if there isn't, they make is easy to create new ones.

Great for these types of students

    Environmentally friendly Nursing Business

    Bang for the buck

The cost of tuition is relatively low compared to other colleges, yet you get classes where you are able to connect with your professors and seek help from them. You also get a green campus with many different lakes and beautiful scenery. There is a full gym that you may access for free and you may go wakeboarding, paddle boarding, sailing, boating, paddle boating, and swimming for completely free in the lake near the dorms.

    What to do for fun

Their is a town center with a movie theater, restaurants, and bars just a few miles away from campus. On campus, there is a lake where you can go fishing, tanning, or even wakeboarding and boating.

    Food and Dining

There is a large selection of dining options on this campus, including a dining hall near the freshman dorms, and on the main campus there is an Einstein's, Chick-fil-A, Starbucks, Jamba Juice, sushi bar, and a small dining area will coffee and sandwiches on the far end of campus.

    Dorm Life

The dorms at FGCU are absolutely amazing. You have the opportunity to live on or off campus in the dorms, and you can have your own bedroom and kitchen. Many of the dorms are even lakeside.

    Academic Rigor

Many of the courses can be tedious, though it usually just depends on the professor. In most of the majors, the course work is relatively easy and manageable even if there is a lot of it.

    Tips for prospective students

Try to decide your major early on because it is easy to get lost taking courses that are irrelevant to your chosen field. They also make it difficult to receive financial aid as anything other than a lower class student. But I do highly recommend this school because it has an excellent quality of education.

    In three sentences

Florida Gulf Coast University isn't the typical university; most of the teachers actually care about how you are doing in class and make the effort to learn your name. The class sizes are pleasantly small and the campus is stunning. There is a strong sense of school pride and it is very easy to get involved on this campus.

    What to do for fun

When I first visited FGCU, I described it as both an excellent university and an amazing vacation spot. Many locations throughout the university offer a large amount of things to do in your spare time, including a man-made beach on a lake, a spa, and a field so that friends can enjoy themselves with a variety of sports activities.

    Dorm Life

Although there are a few restrictions that are included in dorm regulations (internet or electricity usage), the rooms are kept very organized and customization of bedrooms are personal and diversified, allowing any individual to create his or her own preferable living environment.

    Academic Rigor

Academics at FGCU are specifically intended to keep small class sizes to ensure that student-professor interaction is a top priority. Also, the various academies (Lutgert College of Business, etc.) are top notch in terms of learning and teaching aspects.

    In three sentences

Florida Gulf Coast is excellent in all areas, in terms of academic performance, student-faculty interaction, housing, etc. The most notable thing I enjoy about Florida Gulf Coast is the cleanliness and environmentally friendly community that keeps itself unified and prosperous. I recommend this college for students who are in need of a lifestyle involving a free, enjoyable environment to learn and live life to the fullest!

    Food and Dining

There are various options on campus. Einstiens, Starbucks, Subway, Taco Bell, Chickfila, Sushi, Pizza, Jamba Juice, convenient store, dining hall, coffee shop/caf©.

    Dorm Life

FGCU students are spoiled when it comes to housing. All students have their own room and buildings are very new. Freshman doors are like hotels and the halls become a close knit community. RA's and RD's are well trained and passionate about their position.

    Academic Rigor

It definitely depends on your major. Even if the course work is rigorous (i.e. nursing) there are plenty of campus resources to help.

    In three sentences

FGCU is perfect for anyone; there are clubs, programs, and a surrounding community which anyone could become involved in based on their passions. It is big enough to feel like a typical public university but small enough where students get the attention and involvement they need to thrive in college. Plus, Fort Myers/ Naples is a beautiful place to live!

The university police department (UPD) keeps the students safe 24 hours a day.

    Greek Life

When it comes to Greek life we know how to do it. There are about 10 fraternities and 12 sororities.

    Clubs and Activities

There are about 40 clubs that are run by students for students.

Great for these types of students

Students can go to the waterfront and fish. Vegetarians can visit the Food Forest. This is where fruits and vegetable are grown. Students can go there anytime and pick the fruit or vegetable of their choice.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There are nature trails. Animals of all sorts are in the bushes that students are curious to see.

    Bang for the buck

Most of the items on the school are pretty much affordable. Heath services are free and the prescription items are cheap. Food prices are reasonable depending on where you eat.

    What to do for fun

The organization usually has concerts and fun competitions. FGCU is the only school with its own waterfront. Students can go skiing, kayaking, surfing and so much more. There is also basketball courts, tennis courts, volleyball, swimming pool, nature trail, and baseball field.

    Food and Dining

FGCU has multiple options for their students. Chick Fill A, Blue Sushi, and Subway are just a few of the well known restaurants on campus. There is also Sovi dining which has a mixture of delicious food items for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

    Dorm Life

The housing facilities are well built and have a unique design. There are two housing community North Lake and South Village. Students socialize and help each other with homework.

    Academic Rigor

The workload is manageable. Professors break down the course work so students will understand the material easier. There are even centers that aid students with course work that they are struggling with.

    Tips for prospective students

Be vigilant about the courses required for your major. Have money aside to get a bicycle or a car so mobility will not be an issue on campus.New students should keep an open mind about the different organizations that are present on the school and be willing to join.

There is always something fun and exciting happening on campus! Also, don't forget about all the sporting events throughout the semester! GO EAGLES!

    Food and Dining

FGCU has a wide variety of places to eat on campus. Listed below are some of the best places to eat on campus: Chick Fil A Jamba Juice Blu Sushi Starbucks Subway Taco Bell Sovi (South Village dining hall) and more...

    Dorm Life

I recommend that every student lives on campus for at least two semesters in order to experience the true college experience. There is nothing better than being independent and having the opportunity to meet new people. If you are usually shy or even if you are the most outgoing person on the planet, don't forget to meet your neighbors, they are going to be your lifeline if you ever get locked out of your room (and yes it does happen at least once...or twice). FGCU provides three separate living communities: South Village, North Lake and West Lake. Check out their website for more information.

    Academic Rigor

As long as you focus on your studies and show up to class there is no way you can not be successful at FGCU. The professors are amazing and the size of the classes are not that big. My biggest class was 180 students and it barely even feels like it. There are so many classes offered to students so you just need to make sure you pick which are going to be best for you. Don't forget to talk to your academic advisers because they will help you with anything you need.

    Tips for prospective students

No matter what major you are, or even if you are undecided, this college will open a variety of opportunities for you. My advice to prospective students would be to take a tour of FGCU and see for yourself the amazing atmosphere that it provides. When on the tour, listen and ask questions. Once you apply and get accepted, make sure to focus on your goals for the next 4 years and don't forget to have a little fun along the way.

    In three sentences

If you are looking for a school that truly focuses on each students needs, goals and success, this is the college for you. If you are looking for a school that has the best resident life, Greek life and student activities, this is the school for you. If you are looking for a school in a great location with great opportunities to meet new people, succeed at school and get the full college experience while getting your degree, this is the school for you. GO EAGLES!

    Campus Safety

There are emergency blue poles all around campus that if something's wrong and you push the button, an officer shows up within 60 seconds. They're not just for emergencies, if you're ever walking from your car to your dorm late at night, an officer can come and escort you and make sure you're safe. Also, the dorms in North Lake Village have these things called rape cords that you can pull if anything is wrong. Those cords are really for emergencies.

    Greek Life

We have fraternities and sororities and what's great is that since we don't have Greek houses, the fees are WAY cheaper than at FSU or UCF. It's a great way to meet people and expand your friendship circle. One thing though is you don't have to be in a frat or a sorority to have a good college experience. You will make friends and you will have fun either way.

    Bang for the buck

FGCU is one of the cheapest Universities in the state. For the amount you're spending, you're getting dorms that are practically brand new, awesome professors, entertainment, and an experience you'll never forget.

    What to do for fun

If anyone ever tells you there's nothing to do, they're wrong. On campus we have intramural sports and sports clubs depending on what you're interested in. FGCU is very green so they're always trying to motivate kids to go outside. We have nature trails and we have a lake where you can go paddle boarding, kayaking, sailing, and you can reserve a time slot to go tubing or waterskiing (all for FREE). Around town we have movie theaters, mini golfing, restaurants, and bars that people go to and dance or drink. Also, Fort Myers has festivals that they have every year like ZombieCon around Halloween where you dress up as a zombie and walk around downtown while bands play and restaurants are open. I promise you there is always something to do.

    Food and Dining

On campus we have a lot of choices like Subway, Chick-fil-a, Taco Bell, Starbucks, Jamba Juice, Einstein's, and a sushi bar as well as an organic pizzeria. In South Village there is SoVi which in my opinion has its days. Some things are good but others aren't, it all depends what you like. I didn't have a meal plan, I didn't find it worth it for the amount you spend on it.

    Dorm Life

So far I've only lived in Osprey Hall, which is in South Village for freshmen. I absolutely loved it. You have your own room which allows you to have your own space. It also has a living room, kitchenette, and bathroom. The living room was nice to have because it gave you and your friends a place to sit around and hang out, rather than everyone crowding into someone's room. The kitchenette was really helpful because I didn't buy a meal plan so I had to make my food. And the bathroom was nice because you only shared it with two other people rather than a whole floor. We kept ours really clean. Everyone who lived on my floor got along really well, we all became friends instantly. It was really cool because it took away the pressure of making friends since it came so easy to everyone.

    Academic Rigor

It's college, the classes are harder than high school. But we have awesome teachers who are always willing to help you. We have good resources like tutoring and Supplemental Instruction where another student sits in on your class and holds their own meeting time where they pretty much teach you the lesson over again in a way that you understand it. You pay for these resources in your tuition price so you might as well use what you're paying for. Also, if you use these resources, you really won't fail.

FGCU has a waterfront that allows students to lay out by the water and enjoy some sun, go paddle boarding, or water skiing. We also have tons of activities happening on, and off campus daily. Not to mention our awesome off campus FGCU adventure course where you can even go zip lining.

    Food and Dining

We have most of the major food franchise on campus which makes it great for those who don't yet have a car. THE FOOD IS INCREDIBLE!

    Dorm Life

WE HAVE THE BEST DORMS EVER. If you want somewhere where you can have privacy, space, and meet new people. FGCU DORMS IS THE PLACE TO BE!

    Academic Rigor

It all depends on your major, and the classes that you're taking. But who wants to pay their money at a University, and not feel challenged? The teachers are great with lending an extra hand, and there are so many resources at this school to help you pass your classes.

    Tips for prospective students

Come with an open mind. Take going to classes seriously. Take time to talk to your Academic Advisorrs to make sure that you're on the right track. Use all of the resources that this school provides for anything that you might be going through, or anything that you might need. Most importantly enjoy yourself responsibly.
