Categories Comments Great for these types of students Those wanting a personal and small college. It's easy to find things and the classes are small.
Tips for prospective students Don't goof off, especially if you just got out of high school, college is a lot different. You are more responsible for yourself, most professors will not say anything to you if you do not turn in your work.
Bang for the buck Definitely worth the tuition cost, community colleges are cheaper than big universities. It would be wise to go here to get your AA if you plan on doing a 4 year or more degree!!
Am enjoying being here I love the personal feel of this school, the classes are small and all of my professors have taken the time to learn a little about me and my fellow classmates.
Am learning a lot A lot of people put down community colleges, but I have been able to learn a lot due to the small class sizes.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students First-time college students. Students looking for small class sizes and a high school feel. Students looking for a smaller, easier to navigate college. Students looking for friendly, accepting peers and understanding faculty. Students who want to test out the waters and find their major.
Tips for prospective students This is a great school for first-time college students. If you happen to mess up, the faculty are more than willing to help out and try their best to give you advice. Most of the classes are very similar to high-school classes and due to the smaller class sizes, you get a lot more individual time with your professor to maximize learning.
Bang for the buck For a school of this quality, it is definitely not as pricey as it could be. Some of the top teachers in the state and even more prestigious than that have been hired to mold some of the finest minds from people who sometimes didn't even know they were capable of such feats. Financial aid is also there to help you whenever you need and they are more than willing to pull some strings for your individual circumstances.
Am enjoying being here I love Jacksonville and the college has that smaller, high school feel to it. The campus is beautiful, speckled with flowers, sculptures, and new age architecture, and there's plenty of things to do! If you're waiting for a class to start, why not go chill out in the Japanese zen garden? It's so simple to navigate and if you don't know where you're going, the entire first week of class there are people there specifically to help you out. The people are all sweet and the landmarks are gorgeous. Jacksonville is a great place to live!
Am learning a lot The teachers here are all very student-oriented. They take the time to give you their office hours and various ways to contact them if you are having trouble and if you do ever happen to go by, they'll be there to happily assist you. There's also a fantastic assortment of tutors and assistance to help you on your way and through your classes in the centers we have here.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck This college is a great way to start because first its cheap to start at and you are not paying so much for your first two years in college.
Am enjoying being here I enjoy Florida State College. The college itself offers so much for their students and there is a lot of activities for students to join. They also have sports for those who are into sports and play sports.
Am learning a lot I am learning so much from my professors. They are very helpful and are there for you. Plus the classrooms are not so big so it makes the learning environment easier and comfortable.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students People who want a smaller class size at a cheaper cost.
Tips for prospective students My tips are to study hard and to take college seriously. It's not high school anymore.Get to know your teachers and classmates. It will help in the long run.
Bang for the buck It's definitely worth the money. The class sizes are good and the teachers are helpful. You can print things out for free and play in game room or the gym.Pretty much everything is free except for food/drinks and classes/books of course!
Am enjoying being here I enjoy being at this campus. The campus is beautiful and there are always a lot of thinggs going on. We even had Steven Means perform in our cafeteria!
Am learning a lot The new Florida State College at Kent campus is great!I have a had a good experience for my first semester in college. My professors were all very helpful and were always willing to help out if you didn't understand something.I would definitely recommend this college to other people.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Going to this college is great for pretty much anyone, since the campuses have such contrasting styles. Anyone with any personality can find a place that suits them.
Tips for prospective students You get what you put into it. If you put in zero attention and effort into a class, you will get nothing out of it.
Bang for the buck FSCJ is primarily a community college so the cost is relatively low since you don't have to factor in costs such as Room and Board. The books that you have to buy are often quite pricey at the book store, but you can buy most books off of online sites such as Amazon for a cheaper way to get your study materials.
Am enjoying being here I have taken classes at 3 of the campuses: The Kent Campus, the Downtown Campus, and the Cecil North Campus. From what I have experienced, each campus has its' own atmosphere. For example, the Kent Campus is more of a laid-back campus, with many students who hang around with their friends in the courtyard and the cafeteria (Which has a meeting room and a game room inside of the same building). The Downtown Campus is the most busy of the Campuses, as it is the headquarters of the college. People will often crowd the main hallway walking to to their classes or to the offices. It is also the most diverse of the campuses, where many people of different faiths and cultures converge. I only spent one semester there and I made friends with someone from Africa, another person from Haiti, and I have even met Buddhist monks from Southeast Asia. With that said, if you're looking for a party atmosphere at this college, you might want to look elsewhere. There are a few events that go on during the year, but they're not wild parties.
Am learning a lot Like any school, how much you learn depends on the teacher and the student, but there are some teachers who can make you just say wow. For example, I had a World Religions teacher named Dr. Turk, who was not only a Episcopalian minister, but he had good friends who were Muslim and Jewish, which gave him a more personal perspective on how they live their lives.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students This school is great for all types of students. Young, old. those interested in furthering or starting their education, this college offers a variety of bachelor degrees with majors in careers that are in demand in this generation..
Tips for prospective students No matter where you go, you must work hard. How you do in college will determine your future. Decide your major, time is moving quickly, and choose something that will be worth your life in the long run. Grab every opportunity that arises, do not hesitate, and get to know your professors, never hesitate to ask a question.
Bang for the buck The tuition at this College is very affordable. Does not mean that this school is easy just because it is not a University, you must still work hard, and it is competitive, one of the top in the nation when it was still officially a community college. the teaching here is of quality, and the health departments rival that of the local univiersities.
Am enjoying being here It is an enjoyable experience to attend school here since each student can choose what campus pleases them the most, with over 5 campuses spread throughout the span of Jacksonville and more, a student can be sure that their travel to school shouldn't be more than 15 mins or so. There are always activities going on, and even interactive things like video games for charity, in which of course many students interact, and also many meetings for self awareness that give out free food every week. A major plus for college students.
Am learning a lot Many professors that teach here actually work in the feild that they are teaching, for instance, the science department are filled with experienced doctors and nurses that really encourage their students to work harder. Many professors here have a laid back style of teaching and the smaller class sizes enable them to fully give each student the attention that they deserve.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Florida State College of Jacksonville has a broad student body. Overall I would say that the school is great for anybody but especially returning adult students, single parents, and those who work full time or part time.
Tips for prospective students Always keep up with your financial aid. It's not always the school's job to be in charge of your aid, you are. Also, browsing for scholarships is one of the best opportunities a student can take. The school has a large staff that would be willing to sit down with you to determine which scholarships you are qualified for.
Bang for the buck Florida State College of Jacksonville offered a large curriculum that was offered at other local universities for less. Even though they have branched from being just a community college to being an accredited college, they still keep a relatively low price range.
Am enjoying being here Overall my experience with Florida State College at Jacksonville was very pleasant. All of the teachers I had were exceptional and seemed to actually care about the student. They understand what your goals are and do their best to make sure that you achieve them.
Am learning a lot For the past year and a half I have been able to obtain my Associates in Arts Degree from the school through a wide variety of staff and class selections. The general studies requirements for the school have allowed me to explore a large variety of subjects that I wouldn't have throught to take part in.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Looking to save money? This is the school for you.
Tips for prospective students Don't miss out on this great opportunity. If you are wanting to get your A.A. or A.S., this is a great place to do it. This school also has a large amount of students who transfer to other universities. If you want to take some classes here and save some money, then transfer to another college, no problem. The staff is very supportive of that decision.
Bang for the buck Super cheap tuition compared to surrounding school. If you are serious about your education, this is a steal for what you get.
Am enjoying being here The campuses are spread all over Jacksonville (a huge city!). Some campuses are older than others and it can be a little aesthetically unappealing at times, but you are definitely not paying tuition for renovations. Usually campuses have a Subway in their cafeteria. Familiar food is always welcomed.
Am learning a lot This is a great college if you are looking for small class sizes. There are no huge auditoriums where the professor is talking to no one. The student to teacher interaction is unbelievable. Having the capability of asking questions in class is very evident. All the professors I have had are very clear about what they expect from you, and know their stuff!

Categories Comments Great for these types of students All types of students, just because it is a state college does not mean it is of lower quality. Students from the top of their classes or the bottom go here.
Tips for prospective students Get to know your counselors, keep up with dates and don't forget to talk to professors and classmates as often as possible.
Bang for the buck Saves families a lot of money.
Am enjoying being here The only complaint is that the counselors are not always available, once you get one you have to hold on and stay in touch. Besides that it is enjoyable.
Am learning a lot There are classes on basically any topic imaginable. In the end you get the same piece of paper with the same powers so why not get it all at half the price?

Categories Comments Campus Safety the campus is very safe and friendly. there's security that patrols the campus often.
Clubs and Activities there are some clubs and activities on campus, but very little. the campus does not really have the genuine big university atmosphere.
Great for these types of students the school is great for students who aren't really sure what they want to major in or what their goals are in their studies.
Bang for the buck great school for getting your moneys worth. the classes are considerably cheaper than a major university.
Food and Dining there is a cafeteria on campus that sells regular cafeteria food. but, there are many other fast food chains around that are not to far.
Dorm Life there are many apartments near by where people can dorm at while going to school.
Academic Rigor overall the school is a little easier than a major university. but, just like any other college if you start procrastinating and not doing your work you will fall behind and end up not doing well.
In three sentences great school to start at when making your transition from high school to college. very friendly oriented campus where anyone is willing to help you. wonderful place to get your act together.

Categories Comments Campus Safety i could not feel more safe if i tried. everywhere i look there is a campus guard walking around. fscj have installed this boxes all around the parking lot for people to push the button if they need help. the parking lot as well as all around the school is well lit and if you have a late class, you can ask one of the guards to walk you to your car. it is as safe as having you own personal guard.
Clubs and Activities many clubs and activities, but i do not take part so i cannot commit on any of them.
Great for these types of students if you like to have fun in a safe and welcoming environment, then fscj is the school for you. the teachers and staff are so helpful, one can see that they really do love and enjoy what they do. i absolutely love fscj and would not go any place else.
Bang for the buck the classes and everything is priced fair, but i do prefer to buy my books online, but other than that the classes, food and extra events are great. also, most of the stuff that goes on at fscj is free for the students.
What to do for fun there is always something at fscj to do for fun you just have to ask around. there is a rec room to play pool and games and there is always some band or play, maybe a guess speaker to come out and talk to the students about something. i don't take part in much of that because i am always studying, but i hear that is it really fun.
Food and Dining i give the dinning a four out of five because the food is always great and hot, they are people there to cook and others keep the dinning area very clean. they did not get a five because they kitchen is closed on the weekends.
Dorm Life i cannot rate dorm life because at fscj there are no dorms, no one lives on campus.
Tips for prospective students always come to class on time and be open to teachers if you need extra help, they are always willing to stay late and help. there is tutoring for math and reading and it is free to take advantage of that. when you sign up for classes, go to the rooms and make sure you know where they are and where the closest bathroom is before classes start, so you don't have to worry about getting lost on your first day of school.
In three sentences the staff is so helpful. the teachers really enjoy what they do. everything on campus is so easy to find.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Make sure you always take time for yourself. Try to join the activities that the school offer.
Food and Dining College life its hard to stay on the healthy food because you feel like there is no time for it, but eating healthy makes life so much easier for you.
Dorm Life I have to say that I have never lived in a dorm but I hear mixed reviews about it.
Academic Rigor The main focus should be that all students should just stay calm and believe in their self. College will not be easy at any means, but if you set yourself a goal, anything is possible.
Tips for prospective students Since I am a returning student after three years, I would have to say that its a great idea for students to start off at at a smaller college to get the hang of things. I believe its very important to get that one on one that you receive from a smaller college.
In three sentences The staff has been very helpful getting everything set up for me to start school back. To me the centers are very neat, clean, and just overall well taking care of. I love the feel of having a small college like Florida State College at Jacksonville.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck This is a great school that encourages meeting with campus advisers to make sure you are on the right track for your program of study. Categories Comments Great for these types of students Great for students who currently live in Jacksonville and aren't ready to leave home yet from there parents or guardians. Great for students who have high GPA's, because they can always join Phi Theta Kappa (Honor Society) and have a lot of opportunities for scholarships.
Tips for prospective students Be organized and plan out your classes ahead of time. Don't overwork yourself, because it will create a lot of stress and you probably won't do well in your classes. Also, please and I mean please, choose your professors wisely!
Bang for the buck When I went to FSCJ, they had reasonable prices if you're going for your A.A. or A.S. Degree. I don't know what the price range is for the Bachelor's Degree's at FSCJ, but I think it's reasonable.
Did enjoy being here I enjoyed being at FSCJ, because I had friends from high school that were there. Since I was going to FSCJ for my A.A. Degree, I had paced myself with my classes and before you know it I had graduated. During that moment, it was kind of bittersweet, because I was ecstatic to leave but I was going to miss the atmosphere of FSCJ.
Did learn a lot The professors at FSCJ will teach you a lot of stuff that you don't even know. The work load for classes is mediocre, and it's definitely worth it when you go there.

Tips for prospective students Stay on top of all deadlines and dates...the financial aid systems is kind of tricky if you don't know where to look and who to ask. Also, it is very difficult to get answers if you are an online student.
Bang for the buck It is a good value for the money to obtain a degree beyond an Associate's.
Am enjoying being here I do not like taking the classes in the platforms provided outside of Blackboard; very confusing.

Bang for the buck when buying school supplies don't buy them out of the bookstore because they are way over priced. the only thing you should buy out the book store is the books you need for your classes. like $50.00 for an backpack i can get out of walmart for $9.99? or a $20.00 calculator, i can get out of dollar general for $10.00? when buying school supplies for new semesters, and new school terms, buying them out of stores like walmart, dollar general, and family dollar you'll save aton of money. plus when buying clothes walmart, dollar general, and k-mart are great for good cool clothes for a way cheaper price. better than going to the mall paying $30-$40 dollars for a plain t-shirt, and $40.00-$50.00 for jeans. when you can go to k-mart/walmart and get the same outfit, and spend $15-$20 for both, and have money left. if you wanna buy namebrand clothes wait til they go on sale, like sneakers for an example $90-$150.00 for apair of sneakes, for that money you can get 4 pair at payless, and walmart and have tons of cash left. like why buy a pair of jordans for $150.00, when you got a pair of $40.00 addias thats on sale for $20.00?
What to do for fun there are tons of clubs to choose from, if ya wanna join a club, south campus has the best clubs. kent campus has some, but downtown has very few.
Food and Dining it's best to bring your own lunch, because you save a whole lot more money, you'll need later for school supplies. before if you're buying lunch everyday your school money account will go down. especially with the prices they have on lunches in the college lunchroom.
Dorm Life the college has no dorms, it's community college.
Academic Rigor academis is very important, well for people like me who come here to get an degree, some just come here to hang out, and some just come here to get the school money and quit after 2-3 months.
Tips for prospective students expect tons of homework, way more than highschool, and spending hours in the computer lab/library tryin to get it done. unless you have your own computer at home, or a laptop. 75% of the work is don on the computer, you barley have any work out of the books, the books come in handy when need to look at example problems like math.
In three sentences it's a good college, for students who still live at home. i like it cause it help's people get a jumpstart, before they start at a university. it's also good for people who want to save money.

Categories Comments Campus Safety being located in downtown jacksonville, the downtown campus is only blocks away from the police memorial building where the police station is located. this is an advantage because police officers are constantly in the area. there is also a church located behind the campus. this church has security which is there to patrol the church premises but they have access to contact the sheriff's office as needed.
Bang for the buck being a community college you are surrounded by people of all ages and backgrounds. this can be used to your advantage. you have the opportunity to learn of all different backgrounds and cultures without breaking the bank for college.
What to do for fun it depends on what you're into. there's book clubs to join. it simply depends on what you're into. there are advisors whom can direct you to times, places and locations for events.

Food and Dining each campus has either a restaraunt inside, such as subway, or a cafeteria that serves breakfast, lunch, and are always selling snacks in between.
Dorm Life there is no dorm ife at fscj.
Academic Rigor i would have to say that the only academic rigor that i have found at fscj is that the classroom environment is a little tough because there are so many students per professor, so sometimes you have to figure things out on your own or wait until the end of class to ask any questions.
Tips for prospective students a few tips that i would give a prospective student would be to request information from the school itself to better assist you with any questions you might have. schedule yourself a college tour of the campus so that you can see if they offer all of the resourcesthat you are looking for in an educational facility. finally, do not waste time, register for classes as soon as possible because the classes do fill up fast.

Food and Dining Not good at all. Chartwells do not provide food that is healthy nor does it taste good.
Academic Rigor The college expects the most from its students and academically prepares the student to succeed. The course are filled with very competent professors who expect a student to do the work assigned, but does not babysit a person to do it. Most professors do not accept late work. Tips for prospective students The school is very professional so be prepared.
In three sentences Kent Campus is a great place to attend FSCJ if you want to be away from all of the confusion associated with some community colleges. The majority of those who attend want to be there and do not use the school as a social activity. Categories Comments Campus Safety The safety on the campus is very secure. There has never been a day where I have felt unsafe and not comfortable.
Greek Life I am not sure of the Greek life on campus.
Clubs and Activities The activities and clubs vary . I am currently familiar with The Ladies of Prestige as I am currently a freshmen and I considered being apart of this positive club. However , there are many other clubs that allow you to meet new people who are interested in the same field as you are , such as there are clubs that focus on health care , if you'd like to be a doctor or nurse , etc. There are sometimes track meets or fashion shows that are very fun to attend.
Great for these types of students FSCJ is a college that would be great for a student who likes a small and peaceful environment . It would be for a student who enjoys getting involved with organizations , and who would like to be part of maybe a trade , such as in nursing , cosmetology , or fire and rescue , etc.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus An unusual location on campus are the outside picnic tables and the game room , which are both very nice to have.
Bang for the buck I honestly enjoy being a student at this campus , and will always be thankful for the great people that I have met while attending this college. Whether it was a teacher , a student , or a tutor that I've met , it still feels good to meet nice and positive individuals.
What to do for fun Well , there are many things that can be very fun on campus , such as the game room . The campus has a room that is mostly for the use of the students to hang out while they have time to kick back and relax on the comfortable couches. There are also video games , a piano , and a ping pong table available for you to kill time while on break from class.
Food and Dining The cafeteria located on campus serves food that is really delicious , and it isn't expensive. In my opinion , the food is worth every penny. When I go on a lunch break, I usually buy their bacon cheese burgers and fries. The best thing about there food is that it is always hot , fresh , and ready to be served.
Dorm Life Unfortunately , the campus doesn't have any dorms on campus , but there are many nice apartments located within two miles of the campus.
Academic Rigor My academic rigor is to strive for success. I am a hard-working student who is motivated and determined to obtain my bachelor degree in nursing. It is my dream to be a nurse who enjoys helping others , and enjoys their career. Success is what drives me to be the best student that I can be in all of my classes , and failing any of my classes is not an option.
Tips for prospective students I would recommend that the students take advantage of all of the activities that interests them. The campus also allows job seeking opportunities for students , such as the staff sets up class sessions at specific times on specific days for people who need help in preparing a resume , or need pointers in how to conduct yourself in a certain manor during a job interview. The campus also sets a day for job fairs, and this is beneficial for the students , like myself , because it allows us the chance to be informed about jobs that are available . I would also recommend that the students take advantage of the career center that is located on campus , and this will allow you to also receive guidance in applying for available jobs.
In three sentences I currently attend FSCJ north campus , and I am currently a freshmen. My first impression of this college , as I was very nervous and excited to be attending college for the first time , was that it is a very laid-back , relaxing , and fun campus. The atmosphere is very pleasant with many individuals who seem to be happy to be apart of the college life at FSCJ. It is very easy to get along with the students and staff. The staff is very helpful in guiding you towards achieving your goals. There are tutors who are very kind in lending a hand in helping you in a course that you may be having trouble with. Moreover , so far all of the teachers that I have had as a freshmen are really supportive in taking the time out before or after class to discuss my classwork. The coolest thing about FSCJ is that the students are just as helpful and positive.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I've never had or heard of any safety issue at the campus. Most understand losing out on your academic future isn't worth the trouble. So for the most part, they either get control over their emotions or take their problems elsewhere. I think you'll be alright.
Clubs and Activities Whatever you want, unless its a handle of specific organized sports. they have it.
Great for these types of students If you are starting back, if you are starting up, or if you just want to take one class for something specific, this is a good college for you.
Bang for the buck In comparison to some of the universities, fscj is VERY reasonable on their prices.
What to do for fun There are student activites everywhere. They have events up at the campuses. From morning till evening, somebody somewhere is doing something.
Food and Dining North Campus food is.....(how do I put this?)..... the TRUTH!!! Since the culinary arts are at north campus, the food is incredibly good. Dowtnown campus is not worth mentioning. I've heard south campus is good but have not have the opportunity of tasting it yet.
Dorm Life There is none really.
Academic Rigor This truly depends on your class and proffessor. Pay close attention on that first week and get the best feel you can for the class. That will help you get a heads up on the work load you'll have to face.
Tips for prospective students Pay very close attention to your class schedule as listed on your program. It is very easy to take classes needed for programs similiar to yours. In the end though, they can turn out to be time and money wasted. Do Not ask others to tell you what you should take if you already have a program. Look at it yourself and make your own decision. By the way, tuition is climbing so getting it done faster is probbly best.
In three sentences Florida State College at Jacksonville is a good choice for anyone who has a desire to learn. The professors there are, for the most part, very nice and interested in how you do. I would be sure to pay close attention to your degree course list and check for yourself rather than blindly trusting the advisors.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck Overall, I find that Florida State College is a good value for the money spent. They do not have a great variety of graduate degrees available, but they are a great place to start out your college career.
What to do for fun There are a variety of clubs offered on campus as well as regular shows put on by the fine arts department, which students are offered discounts to. There are also athletic games to attend.
Food and Dining I have only eaten on campus a few times and the food was good but pricey.
Academic Rigor I have found the course so far to be informative and challenging yet attainable.
Tips for prospective students Find out who is in charge of your degree or program and make an appointment to see them. They will be able to help you with the particulars of scheduling and planning out your degree course better than the general advisers of the student success center.
In three sentences The instructors I have had at Florida State College are helpful and knowledgeable. The advisers in the student success center have done their best to help me with financial aid and in completing my degree, but they were not as versed in the program I am in as they could have been. I also wish they would offer more technical classes during the daytime hours; I realize many people in these programs work, but not all of us do and daytime classes would be helpful.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck During my 2 years at this school, the tuition rates have gone up each year. Is it worth it? I believe so.
Food and Dining I have never eaten at the campus, so am not much help with this aspect.
Dorm Life There are no real dorms.
Academic Rigor Academics are exactly what you'd expect from a former community college.
Tips for prospective students Do your research and make sure this is the school for you! I have had success here, but for those who need help with advising and choosing the right career path, might not be so lucky.
In three sentences This college has the potential to be a great school. The academics are great on campus and online, although it would be nice if they offered more Bachelor's degree options. Categories Comments Great for these types of students Students with low funds, parents (child care available on campus with grants), older students returning to school, and students who are unsure what they want to major in. The classes are cheap enough that you can take many without hurting your wallet.
Bang for the buck FSCJ is amazingly cheap, 4 classes this semester ended up being $1234.56, which was cheap and amusingly consecutive. Your education will be good, but that money is pretty much only going to pay for the faculty. Do not expect a shining campus or well-trained staff members. If you are looking to have the full college experience, look somewhere else. If you just want a degree and to enjoy your teachers, you have come to the right place.
What to do for fun Fun little festivals and events are always happening, with lots of free food and tee-shirts from local businesses.
Food and Dining Bring your own lunch, the cafeteria is expensive and tasteless.
Dorm Life There are no dorms, either stay with your parents or try to rent a nearby place with some friends.
Academic Rigor If you are planning on majoring in rigorous science classes, look elsewhere, they can't afford new equipment or prepare you very well for your next school. Other than that, you should be able to get just as good a liberal arts education as the next college.
Tips for prospective students Don't bother going in to the financial aid offices to get help, call instead to speak to friendlier, more competent people. Try not to expect the worst from your professors because you think it is a bad school. I have had some amazing and famous professors who teach a few classes there for fun after retiring.
In three sentences The price is right and I still feel like I am getting a decent education. Yes, there is a low dropout rate, but that happens when you accept everyone. Most of the teachers actually want to be there to teach, rather than going to UNF to teach on the side while they wait for something better.

Great for these types of students Non social kids will like this college a lot more. If you don't want to really get involved, you can go to your classes and then leave. On the other hand, social butterflies will find that it's really easy to make and keep friends here.
Bang for the buck Classes can be pricey, and books are cheaper outside of the bookstore.
What to do for fun There are gyms, basketball and courts, and fields everywhere. There are always activities going on.
Food and Dining Our cafeteria has REALLY yummy food.
Dorm Life FSCJ doesn't have any on-campus dorms.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Each time I visit the campus there is always security on guard, looking out for the safety of each student and faculty member.
Bang for the buck I love that FSCJ offers courses at a discounted rate for Florida Students. The Student Success Center will also help each student with Financial Aid, to find out what types of aid, scholarships, and loans he or she may qualify for.
Tips for prospective students It is important after registering to pick a campus of your choice, and go to the Student Success center and speak with an Adviser to properly choose your courses for the upcoming term. Advisers are also great for completing a degree audit that is personalized and tailored to the student's particular educational interests.
In three sentences What is most beneficial to me at FSCJ is their distance learning program. I am able to do my school work online via the Blackboard system, from the privacy and solitude of my home. Categories Comments Campus Safety There is always security on site and classroom doors lock automatically a few minutes in to class. If you ever feel uneasy about leaving class late you can ask a security guard to walk you to your car.
Clubs and Activities They have just as many clubs as a university because of how many campuses there are and how many different areas of study they offer. Each club meets at different campuses.
Great for these types of students It's great for fresh out of high school, first year college students or even students coming back to finish earning their degree.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Every once in a while FSCJ will have events with tables set up for free food, music, or open mic opportunities.
Bang for the buck Surprisingly enough FSCJ has great prices. One class is only about $300 which is great compared to classes at universities that can range anywhere from $600-$800 per class! Books are also a lot cheaper because the school isn't as strict on requiring the newest edition for the class.
What to do for fun Since each campus is in a different location they have different activities surrounding them. South campus is only about ten minutes from the beach, downtown campus is right next to the landing and about ten minutes away from San Marco (shopping!). The Deerwood center is down the street from the St Johns Town Center, the Regal Cinema Movie Theater, and the Avenues Mall. There are also bowling alleys close to each campus.
Food and Dining The Deerwood center has a Subway inside which is great if you need to grab a quick lunch before class. If you have more time, each campus is near multiple restaurants.
Dorm Life There is not an option of living on campus, unfortunately, but there are plenty of apartments that are less than a mile away from the campuses.
Academic Rigor The classes are pretty intense but the great thing about them is that the professors are passionate about what they're teaching. They always keep students' schedules in mind when assigning work that's due as well.

There is plenty of help in registering your classes and a life skills class will help most people.
Tips for prospective students Do your research about the school so that you can do your scheduling at the campus best suited for your needs. There is help for any concern, so do not be afraid to ask for help with anything. Register for classes as early as you can, so that you can pick your instructors.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I've never had a problem. Campus security could be better armed though, in my humble opinion.
Great for these types of students If you need a college to help you transition from High School to college life, whether academically or otherwise, FSCJ is the place.
Bang for the buck It is so cheap I'm getting paid to come here.
What to do for fun There are some clubs and stuff, and at least at Kent, a strong group of Magic players. The events tend to be a little bit lame. Again, no one lives on campus, so choices are limited. This is not UNF.
Food and Dining At least at Kent, ever since the cafeteria bought out the coffee shop, you expect no options, bad service, and rather grossly prepared food. They also can't really work with food allergies. The vending machines are your friends, and reasonably priced.
Dorm Life Perfect! Mostly because there are no dorms. FSCJ is for people who already live in town or have family in town.
Academic Rigor Academic rigor is a little bit of an overstatement. You can learn here, and learn a lot, even if you are a very smart cookie. Getting an A often takes work, but as long as you turn everything in, you'll probably pass a lot of the classes, especially in English. Seems like people pass ENC1101 without knowing anything about MLA.
Tips for prospective students In my experience, the Financial Aid people know nothing. Ask them questions like crazy, but doublecheck everything. Just don't be afraid to bug them and the Business Office. The Business Office knows a lot more than anybody at the college about, well, everything. Be nice, and make friends with them!
In three sentences This college has great value, and is a great transition college from High School, but is really only good if you already happen to live in town. If you live in town, don't let people tell you it is bad because the professors, at least, are almost always awesome. It isn't worth moving here to go to though.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus I'm not sure about any traditions on campus.

What to do for fun There is a student center/lounge where you can get on the computer and watch TV and play games. Its relaxing and fun.
Food and Dining The food is satisfying. The dining area is enjoyable and peaceful especially with friends.
Dorm Life There are no dorms because its still part community college. But there maybe some under construction. They do have some student living communities close by that have some nice options.
Academic Rigor The workload is not much depending on the course taken. If it is a lot then don't cram, just take it slow and steady one day at a time and put your best effort in it. DO NOT PLAGARIZE.
Tips for prospective students You should do your work with your best effort and make sure you turn it in on time. Try to participate and study hard for midterms and final exams. Do your best.
In three sentences This college has helped my advance further and further in my education. Also they provide a somewhat nice atmosphere for students. The staff is helpful in all my needs.

Greek Life There is an honor society called Phi Theta Kappa, that's the only Greek sounding thing I know of.

Great for these types of students If you want to get into a more rigorous institution and your high school GPA wasn't that great, FSCJ will be a perfect place to turn around your academic record. Also, if you are looking to go to graduate school and want to save money in undergrad, this is the place to start.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are geese... EVERYWHERE. They are really cute, but really big! I only like them from a distance. lol :)
Bang for the buck Yes! You will save so much money going to FSCJ. Especially for students living at home, you will be able to save up so much money for transfer to a University by going to FSCJ.
What to do for fun There is always something happening at FSCJ, sporting events, concerts, galleries, seminars, I didn't think the student life would be much fun when I first enrolled. However, I have been pleasantly surprised at the endless calendar events.
Food and Dining It's so delicious. I love the cafeteria on every campus. I eat breakfast almost every day there and sometimes lunch. There is a healthy variety and its not expensive.
Dorm Life I live at home! :)
Academic Rigor If you are used to a bunch Advanced Placement classes in high school, FSCJ will be like taking a bunch of honors courses. If you have a good work ethic and good study habits, you will make A's.

What to do for fun There are always a ton of campus activites, games, and even game rooms on campus where you can hang out and have a good time, there's always something going on!

Food and Dining The cafeteria on campus is surprisingly very delicious. They have subs, snacks, and even salads available. The food may be a little over priced but that is at every school.
Dorm Life I do not live in the dorms. I don't think FSCJ has dorms.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are officers who patrol the campus regularly, even on the weekends, and call boxes places all throughout the various parking lots in case of emergency.
Food and Dining While I've never eaten at the school cafeteria (I attended South Campus), I do know that there are loads of cheap and yummy restaurants within 10 minutes walking or even 5 minutes driving.
Dorm Life FSCJ (as far as I am aware) does not provide on-campus housing for their students. There is, however, affordable housing usually available just off campus but still close by
Academic Rigor Academics are about an average level of difficulty here, depending on what classes you have. I know that the French classes focus more on the grammar of the language than they do vocabulary, so it goes to show how you get a different sort of emphasis in some of the more traditional academics such as foreign language.
Tips for prospective students If you get a city buss pass, the city buses drop off at all of the different campuses, so it's convenient if you don't have a car.

Categories Comments Campus Safety It's Jacksonville. No matter where you are, there will ALWAYS be a lack of safety just because our higher crime rates (watch out for the North, Downtown and ESPECIALLY Kent campus, South campus and Deerwood are not too bad). All campuses except for NAS Jax are open, so there's that as well.
Greek Life Non-existent
Clubs and Activities I will admit, if you are willing to invest your time and effort into searching and trying, their are some great programs (for me, theatre) and MANY clubs and organizations offered here.
Great for these types of students -Independent, working students funding their own education while working -Older Adult students going back to school or coming for the first time -Students from middle class families who are not given much financial aid and therefore cannot afford a university -Those who want to stay in their hometown or want to live at home during college -Parents needing to take one or two classes at a time and get a degree at their own pace
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus South Campus is apparently haunted by a theatre ghost in the Wilson Center. During various productions strange and supernatural phenomenons are known to occur. Also, South Campus seems to have a penchant for flash mobs. Not sure why, but it is probably because we are mostly Arts students ;)
Bang for the buck As aforementioned, you are getting what you pay for. As the least expensive alternative, there is not a WHOLE lot offered, but you can make it a fulfilling experience for yourself if you really care to excel and make the most of your time here at FSCJ.
What to do for fun The South Campus is BY FAR the most arts-inclined in terms of programs and resources (the theatre, dance and music programs are all headquartered here), and the Kent Campus focuses most on Student Life.
Food and Dining The small cafeteria resources on campus are overpriced.
Academic Rigor As an open-admission community college, one should not expect to be academically-challenged much unless you take Honors courses or are involved in Phi Beta Kappa. However, some teachers do desire to break down this stereotype (although it is accurate) and really encourage and push students who show promise and put forth effort. For me, those have made all the difference.
Tips for prospective students Really only consider FSCJ if you have no other options because of your grades or because of lack of funds. I preferred to go straight to a 4-year university after High School, but because my family could not afford it I am attending FSCJ one year to finish my AA. Overall, the experience is what you make of it. It won't feel as exciting as living on a University campus, and won't be as academically challenging, but you can still find programs to be involved in to make the most of your short time here.
In three sentences FSCJ is a large network of 30,000 students looking to gain their AA degree (or one of very few Bachelor's). FSCJ is not an academic mecca, but it will help those who cannot afford a University to pursue higher education. Despite the lack of true scholarly competition and ambition, there are many professors who are passionate about what they do, and those few individuals really help their students succeed.

What to do for fun Lots of campus activities. Gym on most/all sites and the atmosphere is inviting. Recreation Room with fun things to do games and ect. Often find volleyball or other activities that are walk-up & participate type fun.
Food and Dining Friendly, Clean, Decent, No complaints.
Dorm Life No Dorms to speak if but you'd have to inquire I believe there is a partnership with some local apartments that allow for dorm type set-up.
Academic Rigor I found the curriculumn in 90% of my classes was quite easy but I also make a point to choose professors who grade on a curve and offer chances for extra credit as well as giving myself every opportunity to score well. As a result Im in my 3rd year with 3.78 gpa
Tips for prospective students Florida State College makes getting a four year degree more attainable for most people. They offer several Bachelor degree programs as well that are better than the degrees usually offered on the community college level Im working towards BS in Biomedical Sciences. Kent campus if my favorite choice of all their campuses.
In three sentences Florida State College is a great asset to the community there are multiple campuses and Ive attended two, of which I enjoyed the faculty the curriculum and the overall experience.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students This school is good for self-motivated students looking to save a bit of money. There are a lot of AS degrees offered at this school, and if you earn your AA you can skip taking general courses at a university. Bachelors are also offered, but mostly in concentrations like Nursing.
Bang for the buck Really it's what you make of it. It's a community college so it's your cheapest option, and they do have some good classes. Always check RateMyProfessor!
What to do for fun Each campus will hold a variety of events for students.
Food and Dining Typical cafeteria food but they do have a good veggie burger! Prices are a little expensive.
Dorm Life No dorms on campus.
Academic Rigor Some professors are extremely lenient while others are pretty strict.
Tips for prospective students If you plan on transferring to another college or a university MAKE SURE your credits will transfer. I've had so many classes end up as extracurricular because they where one level lower than the university required courses.
In three sentences Classes can be very easy or very difficult, although all the teachers want you to succeed. Math and science courses tend to be more rigorous than English and humanities. Don't expect too much help from the advising and financial offices.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Security is top-notch. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office always has a comfortable presence on every campus. For the most part, mature people attend here. Crazies don't generally wander onto campus.
Greek Life I believe only two honor societies are present.
Clubs and Activities There is a club for everyone. Many have scholarships available. Some clubs are available to help explore interests in particular fields once the student finds that major and plans to transfer to a larger university.
Great for these types of students Students who are choosing to knock-out their general education courses or prerequisites before transferring to a larger university generally attend here. Also, students who want to dabble in a variety of fields to explore their interests before committing to a major once being stuck at an expensive university also belong here. Students of all ages attend here because of the ease of access to the community.
Bang for the buck Credits and textbooks are half the price compared to a university level course.
What to do for fun There are many clubs and activities available on a daily basis at each campus. The South campus is minutes away from the beach and Jacksonville's hottest mall.
Food and Dining The food is generally cafeteria food. There is a Subway at one campus and Starbucks at a few other campuses.
Dorm Life No dorms are located on campus. Students wishing to use dorms will use the dorms at the University of North Florida, which is right across from FSCJ South campus. I hear special prices are available for FSCJ students there for housing.
Academic Rigor Honors courses are available here for those wanting an additional challenge. Many of the upper-level courses have higher grading scales that require 92% for a grade of an A, so you'll be working very hard. Most importantly, you need to focus on actually learning the material, not your grade. If you learn the material and understand it, then good things will come.
Tips for prospective students Even though state-colleges receive the negative stigma of being a school for 'not-smart-enough' students and '2nd-rate-professors', this schools isn't one of those. The students, faculty, and resources available here are rivaling top universities. The affordability is great at this level and the amount of aid available, too.
In three sentences The professors are brilliant and care for the success of every student. All classes are small and personal. This is a great first step for those getting an A.A. or those wanting to transfer later.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Out of the five years I've attended here, safety has never been an issue.
Bang for the buck There is no sweeter deal than to pay little money for a top-notch education.
What to do for fun FSCJ has a variety of activities, clubs, and groups that take place all the time. The multi-cultural fair is a highlight for everyone. They even offer fun classes such as Zumba and Yoga.
Food and Dining The food is excellent. Meals can be cooked to order in the way that you like; The grill staff are friendly and funny.
Academic Rigor The professors are very thorough and creative in the way that teach.
Tips for prospective students Complete an on-campus orientation over an online orientation, take notes, review them and take heed of the advice given ( hint: financial aid guidelines). Remember it's not how fast you finish but how you finish (hint: do not take too many courses). Be sure to set aside study time in an non-distractive environment (ex. the public library). Keep organized. Utilize the free tutors and computers in the student success center. Utilize ratemyprofessor.com when registering for classes.
In three sentences Florida State College at Jacksonville has the best and most helpful counselors, advisors, and professors any student could ask for. FSCJ is affordable and a great way to start any student's college career. FSCJ offers a variety of programs to get students of all ages ready to start on the path to a better career and life.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Jacksonville is a BIG city, but if you don't have money there isn't much to do. You can go to the beach, Adventure landing, Dave and Busters, Zoo, movie theater, go to a Jaguar's football game, Jacksonville Landing, Hanna Park, World Gold Park, and they have great shopping malls.
Dorm Life FSCJ doesn't have dorms. If you aren't living with parents, or family in Jacksonville, then you will need to get a student apartment near the school. The school is apart of UNf's off campus housing program, so these certain apartments shouldn't be as expensive as a non-student apartment.
Academic Rigor The classes are quite easy, but don't slack off because it can get hard very quickly.
Tips for prospective students 1. Don't slack off. College is not the time to go and party all of the time and forget about your education. 2. Don't skip class. The more you skip class, the more likely you are to fail the class. 3. CARE ABOUT YOUR GRADES. The higher you maintain your GPA, the easier it will be for you to gain scholarships for school.
In three sentences Overall, FSCJ is like a community college. Even though it has a Bachelor's program, most people only go to the school for their AA to transfer. The school is relatively easy.
