    Tips for prospective students

    Join clubs early on so that you will have a chance of securing a leadership position by the time you're an upperclassman, but only be a leader of something you are passionate about. Ensure excellent academic performance and test scores, which do NOT need to be perfect but must still be high. Show that you can contribute to the community, whether through community service or a job. Make sure to establish good relationships with people who will likely end up writing recommendation letters for you. If you can, visit Harvard's campus to get a feel of whether you'd be happy/comfortable there -- does it feel right? If it does and you're ready to apply, then start the application (early). Make sure to follow up with the admissions office to ensure that ALL parts of your application have been received. Be well-prepared for the interview.

    Harvard's financial aid is probably the best in the country. (I received a much bigger scholarship than I thought I would.) What's great is that the scholarships are need-based and Harvard does its absolute best to meet 100% of your need.

    Unlike many other schools, Harvard does not use a random process to determine housing arrangements for freshmen. I mean, where you live is random, but not the people you live with. The housing office staff tries their best to pair you up with people who are similar to you in terms of lifestyle but different enough to create an interesting mix. Although there are some cases of housing disasters, most people I know like their roommates and are close with others in the same dorm. Even better, you get to choose who you want to live with for the rest of your 3 years there. If that's not enough for you, there are PLENTY of clubs/organizations for you to join and meet people, and an endless amount of concerts/shows/dances/parties/other fun events throughout the year. The work is, of course, difficult but definitely manageable if you know how to use your time wisely. Also, the fact that you're allowed to check out the classes before actually enrolling in them (known as shopping classes) definitely helps you to decide which ones to take. Basically, you get to sit in on the first lecture or two and give it a test-run before you decide whether to sign up for that class. Just when you think it can't get any better than this, there's also a very useful student evaluations website (the Q Guide) where you can read feedback from past students. If you read the Q Guide and shop the classes, the chance of you taking a class that you'll hate is substantially reduced. The real problem is having to choose from a myriad of interesting classes.
    Am learning a lot

    With its liberal arts focus, Harvard provides the type of education that helps you to become a better thinker. You probably won't gain as much concrete knowledge here as you would at a non-liberal arts college, but I think this has more to do with the concept of liberal arts itself so it's not really Harvard's fault... One problem that does appear to be Harvard's own is that many of its professors are renowned for their research, which means that they're good at research but not necessarily teaching. They all know their stuff; many just have trouble teaching it. This is not to say, however, that Harvard lacks capable professors. In fact, I've had the pleasure of attending the lectures of some of the most experienced, interesting, and enthusiastic professors on campus. The point I'm trying to make is that not ALL Harvard professors are great at keeping you awake during lecture. The good thing, however, is that they are all approachable people (even if they seem intimidating). Many students go to office hours to ask questions, which is usually extremely helpful. Remember: Harvard professors might not always be the best teachers, but they ARE very smart people who are generally willing to lend a helping hand.

    Great for students that tend to get along with everyone. Great for self-motivated and passionate students. Harvard is bit more laid back than what most people imagine, so both don't worry if you're not a type A person. You're still welcome here.

    Visit the campus, talk to a few current students or grads and you'll be able to get all the info you need. Try do something unique and creative during your high school years. Take risks, go on adventures. These kinds of things look great on apps and they make for great essays.
    Bang for the buck

    By and far, Harvard has the best financial aid of any college in the world. Income < $60k, you're in for free. FREE. You can't beat free. Even upper income family receive a lot of aid here. In many cases, they'll even send you refund checks when you have a positive balance from extra outside scholarship money.

    I absolutely enjoy being there. Wonderful students, wonderful staff. People actually care about you at Harvard. People always ask me, Do they party at Harvard? Yes! Maybe not as crazy as some schools, but we definitely have some great parties. The Cambridge/Boston location is very exciting. The only con I've noticed is a lack of school spirit sometimes.
    Am learning a lot

    YES, YES, YES. You will learn tons and only from the best and the brightest. The professors are amazing and the TFs, likewise. The courses are generally designed to push you towards the limit of learning. IMO, the clubs and the student community alone make Harvard a great place to pickup knowledge, skills, and new friends.

    Harvard works best for the self-motivated, over-achieving, confident types. These people tend to feel inspired by the environment, but students who do not enjoy academic work and challenges are sometimes intimidated by the coursework.
    Tips for prospective students

    Besides requiring the highest standards of academic achievement, admissions tends to look for students who are either very well-rounded (which means doing wide variety of activities and doing them well) or for students who are dedicated to a specific interest. Students who better fit the specific interest category should be doing this at a very high level. I have met people who, for example, were very competitive in national high school science fairs or athletics. Once you get here, take full advantage of shopping week. This is the first week of classes in which you can go to any class before officially registering to see if you like the syllabus and professor. Shopping ensures that you will get classes and professors that work for you, and it also allows you to judge class sizes. Some popular classes, such as those in the economics department, are gigantic, but there are also lots of small classes in other departments, like the language classes.

    This university is definitely worth the tuition, and I would defintiely make the decision to go here again. The current financial aid program is excellent and is much better than the aid offered by other private universities, including the other Ivy League schools.

    The classes at Harvard are engaging and in-depth, and I felt that I was learning things that would definitely be of use in later life, even when these classes were not directly related to my career plans. In order to do well, it is necessary to put concentrated effort into academic work, and most students spend long hours completing papers and problem sets. That being said, the type of student who comes here is usually the type that enoys academic work. However, there are hundreds of things to do besides homework, ranging from the science fiction club to acapella groups. My personal interest is music, and I am definitely kept busy with playing in different ensembles. Also, being in Cambridge allows for going into Boston to see the Red Sox, the Boston Symphony, the Museum of Fine Arts, or simply hanging out (Harvard Square itself is also a good hang-out area). Everyone on campus is always doing something interesting, and is usually caught up in the excitement of doing it.
    Am learning a lot

    It's impossible not to learn a lot at Harvard, with such a wide range of classes taught by professors who are often experts in their field. Obviously, Harvard is known for being a prestigious research university and so the academic education students get here is outstanding. But besides classroom learning, students at Harvard are able to learn an amazing amount from their peers. The student body is economically, socially, and racially diverse, and in addition to this, most students bring unusual interests and experiences to share. Because of this, student interactions inside and outside the classroom bring each individual into contact with ideas that they otherwise would never have encountered. Finally, Harvard's sheer volume of resources, such as the extensive library system, guarantee that no student will go without the ability to learn as much as they possibly can.

    Harvard looks for individuals that are well-rounded (ah, how many times have you heard this before?), confident, and motivated students. Show Harvard that you dream big and put in as much effort as needed to reach those dreams. Show them that you really will take advantage of the school and not waste a single drop of your potential. Just show them what you've got! When you get in, visit the school. Harvard really isn't for everyone, so come and check out the atmosphere. Don't judge a school by its name, judge by the vibe you get. When at Harvard, explore! There's so much to see and so much to do! Don't get caught up in one single concentration or one single extracurricular group; there are so many things I'm sure you've never seen before. Don't limit yourself because you'll never have the ability to be at this place again. Take random courses and meet random people, you'll be better for it.

    Harvard is one of the leading institutions for comprehensive and extensive financial aid. If you get into Harvard, you will not have to worry about paying to actually go. Harvard will make sure that you are able to attend. Undoubtedly, there are many costs that are not included in one's financial aid package like airfare, but considering the uniqueness of this school, it's definitely big bang for all your buck.

    Harvard is a very challenging school; not only does it push students academically, it also pushes in other respects. Individuals are all very driven at this school, at at times there is an atmosphere of stress and anxiety, this is usually during finals period. People also tend to become involved in excessive activities and have no free time. This isn't to say though that Harvard is not fun, because on the contrary, it is. There are scenes for all types of individuals and varied definitions of fun. There are plenty of parties every single weekend! Concerts and dance recitals, art galleries and poetry readings, school attractions and museums, and more! To warn though, students are often caught in the Harvard Bubble, but Harvard is an urban campus! Cambridge and Boston are incredible cities with a lot to do.
    Am learning a lot

    Harvard provides its students freedom. With freedom, it is a student's choice where to go, what to do, and who to surround themselves with. The environment at Harvard is indeed a learning one; not only do I learn in the classroom, but I learn in the organizations I belong to and from the incredible students I am lucky enough to share my four college years with. Learning is completely dependent on how much a student strives for that domain. Undoubtedly, Harvard gives its students amazing choices. Harvard has an incredible selection of courses taught by the best in each field; it is an immense challenge to try to select only four courses each semester. Additionally, counselors and advisers are knowledgeable, and there are incredible opportunities with unique educational programs such as study abroad, becoming certified to become a teacher, and researching in labs. Outside of classroom walls, Harvard has a vibrant extracurricular life. There are organizations of all sorts. These one-of-a-kind groups are made up of some of the brightest and most ambitious students in the world; these people are the reason why Harvard is so special.

    As goes without saying (but I’ll say it again anyway), Harvard is great for students who are hard working, dedicated, and self-motivated. Everyone can find a place to fit in here, but all students definitely need to be humble and grounded, and confident in their own abilities. You can’t come to Harvard and expect to be the top-dog in everything, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a possibility. Keep in mind where you are, and don’t lose confidence even if you aren’t doing as well as you did in high school. Generally, students who get into Harvard are used to being the best or near the best in what they do, but that might not be the case when you arrive on this campus. No worries—just never lose faith in yourself and your abilities, and you will be great in this university.
    Tips for prospective students

    As a Harvard student, everyone passes through the “oh my gosh what am I doing here” stage at some point in their college career. If you go to Harvard, you will feel overwhelmed. You’ll ask yourself, “what have I done in my life that could ever be as great as what some of my peers have done?” You’ll wonder whether or not you made the right choice in coming to such a prestigious school, and you will feel as if you have under-accomplished. Do not fret—this is absolutely normal, and the stage will pass. So if you’re a prospective student who’s been accepted, but you’re afraid of going because Harvard seems like an intimidating place to be, keep in mind that most everyone here has doubted at some point as well. A person becomes wiser by surrounding him or herself with the best, so if you have the choice, choose Harvard. As long as you’re willing to put in the effort to work hard and meet people, you can’t go wrong here.

    You have to acknowledge that most of your money goes to the name. As I mentioned before, you learn the same material at other universities in the same fashion. If you choose to go to Harvard or other big name universities, you have to understand that the education you receive won’t be light years better than that from other colleges. So in that sense, for all the extra money you pay, the education really is not the “bang for the buck”. However, it’s the opportunities and the atmosphere that are different. A less prestigious university may offer an education that’s close in scope to that of Harvard, but can it also offer a talented, worldly student body? Can it offer the same level of enrichment and depth to the education it gives? Can it offer quality and variety in its subjects of study? Harvard has its advantages here – not only are there the resources, but the resources are present in all its subjects of study. As a liberal arts college, Harvard focuses on breadth and opportunity, and you, as a student, reap the benefits of this focus since you can choose any field and know you’ll receive a quality education. Other universities specialize in certain studies, and are quite strong within those limited areas. However, if you choose to go there and either change your mind on your major or wish for a more broad education, you may find the opportunities lacking. To me, Harvard is worth every penny of its very expensive tuition for these reasons – it combines a superb, expansive education with endless opportunities and incredible networking.

    I absolutely love it here. Part of Harvard’s appeal for me was the city setting. I grew up in a suburban neighborhood in Ohio, so Boston’s bustling atmosphere is very exciting and new for me. Harvard’s campus is mixed with the city, so I often have to walk along the streets to get where I need to go. There’s always plenty to do on Friday nights and weekends, since there are restaurants and malls within bus or subway distance. But the campus wasn’t the only reason why I chose the school, of course – I picked Harvard mainly because of the people. At Harvard, you’re surrounded by the best and the brightest from literally all over the world. My class contains students from every state in the US, as well as various countries elsewhere. It’s fascinating to meet these people randomly in the dining hall, share unique experiences, and become friends. My peers are not only from everywhere, but they are talented in so many areas. I love the opportunities I have to meet incredibly accomplished people, and to be a part of something greater than myself.
    Am learning a lot

    Yes, I learned a lot here, but really, you can learn a lot anywhere you go. Learning depends less on the college and more on the student – obviously, the more work you put into your education, the more you’ll get out of it. I’m a freshman at Harvard, so I’ve only completed a semester so far. However, I feel like I’ve learned a lot because I’ve tried my best to do so and get decent grades. I feel that this criterion (“Learn a lot”) really isn’t specific to the university. No matter where you choose to go, you decide how much you want to learn. For instance, chemistry at Harvard is like chemistry at any other university; it doesn’t matter how you spin it, a nucleus will contain protons and neutrons. You’d learn it the same way as well – memorization, practice problems, etc. You know the works. What’s unique about Harvard is definitely the resources. Since it is a large university with quite a bit of money, it’s strong in all its academic fields, not just a few. I spoke about this with a friend who attended a smaller university. Although he loved his experience there, he did mention that the research laboratories lacked some more expensive, high-tech equipment. Rest assured that you will not encounter this or similar problems at Harvard.

    Tips for prospective students

    Before applying, I encourage you to visit Harvard so that you can get a feel for the place. Once you're sure you like the school, start your application as early as possible, check it over a few times, and make sure you are well prepared for your interview. If you are accepted, attend the visiting program - Harvard will probably provide you with transportation funds. Reach out to clubs you're interested ~ having contacts can never be a bad thing. Most importantly, ask questions.

    Harvard has one of the best financial aid programs in the country, if not the best. If you are accepted, Harvard will definitely make sure that you have the monetary means to attend. For students who qualify, the school offers free tickets for events like dances and concerts, and there are even miscellaneous aid like a winter coat fund. Harvard definitely wants you to enjoy your college experience, it's even paying for me to have an ice skating lesson over winter break.

    The first month transitioning to college life was a little difficult, but Harvard a great number of students and proctors who are eager to reach out to you. During the first week, there are numerous bonding sessions for you to interact with others from your dorm entryway. Once classes and activities start, even more windows of opportunity open. Since foreign language classes meet everyday, you really get to know your classmates and will most likely end up hanging out with them outside of class. It might be harder to make friends in the bigger lecture classes, but if you reach out, you will find someone.
    Am learning a lot

    So far, my professors have been funny, intelligent, and friendly. The teaching fellows can be more of a hit or miss, but remember that you always have office hours with the professor. What is nice about Harvard is that it offers a shopping period, which allows you to sit in on a class before submitting your final schedule. As a result, I was able to weed out classes that I knew would not fulfill my expectations. Harvard also has general education requirements, and that allows me to explore subjects I've never explored before.

    Harvard University is the perfect atmosphere for students truly interested in learning because it is essential for them to passionately pioneer their academic endeavors with the plethora of opportunities available.
    Tips for prospective students

    I work closely with a few undergraduate admission officers and the application reviewing process is extremely personal. These admission officers basically “master” each applicant and present them to the admissions council, fighting like a lawyer for votes. A prospective student can make the job of an admissions officer easier by skillfully using the application to paint a detailed picture of himself/herself. Everything from writing style to activities is taken into account and the interview solidifies the perceived personality. Harvard is looking for genuinely intelligent AND kind people. I’ve heard of acceptances being rescinded because the students were rude to the office receptionist or student-host during a visit!
    Bang for the buck

    Several top tiered private schools advertise that their financial aid packages are amazing, but Harvard University is the only one that has supported their words with tangible proof. I received a more than generous financial aid package. They also have tons of unique financial aid programs such as a computer reimbursement program where the institution will reimburse up to $2,000 for a new computer and/or related gadgets. Depending on your financial situation, they will also give you money for winter clothes! Tons of grants are also available if you are interested in traveling/studying abroad or even if you would like to throw social events! The Office of Careers and Services, as well as other clubs on campus, will guide you along the grant application process as well! The only downside is that they only allow you to apply $4,000 of outside scholarship money to your fees. This policy stems from their philosophy that their financial requests are very reasonable and therefore you should be able to meet their requests. Any outside scholarships you receive that exceed the $4,000 is put in Harvard’s bank to use as they see fit.

    My transition to Harvard was definitely the most difficult thing I faced my first semester, but this was due mainly to personal issues such as a break up with my high school boyfriend and my grandmother falling ill. I was lucky to make strong connections with my peers early on; however, I still felt uncomfortable talking about family illness with my friends at Harvard and that was when faculty advisors became much needed helping hands. I found myself not only becoming close friends with my peers in my class, but everyone in the Harvard community - whether that was upperclassmen or faculty, it just seemed that we were all connected with this common Harvard thread and this network and these interpersonal connections are what made my first semester so amazing! Leaving my best friends at home was one of the most difficult - most tear filled nights ever, but knowing that my friendships in college would quickly supplement the relationships I had back at home provided me with a lot of needed comfort. I never really did understand diversity until I came to college and met internationals from parts of the world I didn't even know existed! Second semester, I definitely took on the most challenging courses I've ever faced but I'm still able to say that it was a beautiful semester because I struggled alongside my classmates. I know many prefrosh are concerned about the cut-throat stigma, but this definitely is a misconception. I tend to go out of my way to help others, even if this means sacrificing the few hours of sleep I normally get; but, this is common because I know a handful of my classmates have done the same for me. We generally all want each other to succeed. I guess this is because we realize we all have different contributions we offer, and together, these contributions have a synergistic effect. Harvard definitely has a competitive atmosphere, but I'm confident when I say all of my friends are competitive with themselves more so than with others - it's more of a fierce competition with ourselves and a friendly interpersonal competition.
    Am learning a lot

    Harvard University courses – even introductory classes – are phenomenal! You can tell that hundreds of years of experience have perfected their system - everything from how students select courses, to the way it is structured is perfect. The first week of every semester is called “Shopping Week” because students have the freedom of sitting in on as many classes as they would like without committing. This is not only a great way to ease into the rigors of each semester, but also get a good feel for the class material as well as the professor. There isn’t much competition for classes (except for the capped lotteried ones), but many classes will hire more Teaching Fellows if more students enroll than expected. I am a math and science-geared student so the majority of my classes are structured as so: a lecture (ranging from 30-600 students) by a professor a few times a week and then a section/discussion hour (10-12 students) with a Teaching Fellow/graduate student once a week, and perhaps a Laboratory class. Even though lectures can have hundreds of students, technology such as trivia-like answering buzzers have made the class very interactive. The professors usually have experience lecturing to a large crowd and have perfected how to entertain a large group. Since the discussion sections are so small, it is very intimate and all of the Teaching Fellows I have interacted with are more than willing to help you by holding extra office hours and/or answering emails extremely promptly. There is so much support from teachers as well as academic advisors that they ensure not only your academic, but also social success. After taking six classes in high school, the four classes that Harvard mandates sounds like a breeze, but it definitely is challenging, especially on top of extra-curriculars like athletics or public service. In high school, teachers spoon-feed you knowledge, telling you what you will be tested on and what you are expected to learn. However, in a university setting, professors will explain main concepts and expect that you extrapolate them independently (or with a group). This is very evident in the homework. In high school, the homework is oftentimes a tedious, repetitive practice of the class work. However, in college, the problem sets seem like new material you haven’t yet covered because you are expected to apply the concepts in class to new situations.

    Have a SPARK OF INSANITY in your essays. I wrote my first essay about how I flipped out at a fellow actor who wouldn't kiss me on stage. I wrote my second essay on the first time I discovered true acting, I ran from the room bawling because the emotion I was channeling was so overpowering. Now, the admissions people probably looked at my essays and said, Wow, this is girl is NUTS. Let's take her. Don't be afraid to show your crazy side; that's what they want to see.

    Harvard is worth every penny that you spend. However, for every penny that you spend, you have to put in an equal equivalent of effort in order to reap the rewards of the school. A good education doesn't just present itself; you have to earn it.

    The party life and the extracurriculars are awesome. I've done UChoir, theatre, opera, and the Pre-Veterinary society. I work my butt off during the week, but I give my self at least one night a week to go out and rage. Harvard is a HUGE party school--don't be fooled by stereotypes.
    Am learning a lot

    Every day that I am on campus, I learn something new about myself, about the world, and what I can do to change the world. If it sounds empowering, that's because it is. I am an Organismic and Evolutionary Biology major and having the time of my life. The subject material is engaging and the difficultly level is extremely high, pushing myself to new limits and teaching me how to be a great self-learner.

    Having not been Harvard, I don't know what it's like, but I can honestly say that, like any college or school, try your best and just have fun with it. I mean, you're only going to Harvard once right?!

    From the information that I have researched, I have learned that Harvard has one of the best financial aid systems around. Although the tuition cost is very high, I know that Harvard will put their selves out there to allow as many students into their school, even if it means paying for them.

    I hear that Harvard is a huge school and I've never really been away from home longer than a week. I hope that I will be able to adjust very quickly. I've heard about many things that the people at Harvard do to make you feel welcome. I doubt that's going to change.

    I haven't attend nor visited Harvard University, but definitely plan on doing so. With everything that I've heard about this college, I think I can definitely say that I am going to learn a lot there. I am only 13 years old, but by the looks of what everyone is saying, I think I am going to learn a lot at Harvard.

    The caveat I give is that your college experience is as much as you make of it, that being said the unique opportunities (such as studying abroad in Shanghai through a grant) to wonderful activities (playing Mariachi and traveling the US!) to meeting people from all over the world, each day is a new experience!

    Ever since I walked onto Harvard Yard I have always been pushed to strive for more, challenged in ways I never knew, and it has made me a better student and person because of it. Not only in classes, but the new ECs I've joined, and the life experiences that have been afforded to me.

    HUPD always informs students of any wrongdoings on campus. There are always police officers on campus and blue boxes with buttons that you can press for assistance. Harvard is in the middle of a big city, so of course crime is to be expected. Just be careful and all will be well.

    Definitely part of the social scene but not the normal. We also have finals clubs, which is a similar institution to a fraternity

    Primal Scream- The friday before finals Harvard students gather to streak in a lap around Harvard yard. Very cold in the winter. Tourists gather to take pictures. Housing Day- Hogwarts meets Harvard on the day that housing assignments are given out. Freshmen stay up all night waiting. Upperclassmen gather at the John Harvard statue in the early morning. Then when letters come out, upperclassmen burst into the rooms of the freshmen from their house, celebrating and welcoming them with paraphernalia Peeing on the foot... you'll see.
    Bang for the buck

    Living, learning, and sharing ideas with some of the most intellectual, famous, interesting people in the world? An unlimited meal plan? Beautiful old buildings kept in pristine condition? A wonderful location? Priceless.
    What to do for fun

    Definitely suggest going to the many shows put on by the theater department every year. They are completely student run and generally very cheap. A capella groups are an amazing experience as well. The sports games are a ton of fun. If you ever find yourself bored on the weekend and not in the mood to party, there is always a great offering of free Harvard-sponsored events
    Food and Dining

    Tons of Mexican food around as well as little sandwich shops. There are plenty of great places to go out for coffee and there is a wonderful mix of chain and personal owned restaurants. Basically, whatever the budget, there is a place for you.

    The advisers, especially freshman year, are absolutely incredible and foster an amazing sense of family. Plus, imagine living among some of the most talented and intellectually stimulating students in the world. There is never a reason to be bored

    Make sure you are ready to work as hard as possible for the entire year. There is no down time. There are no breaks. School must be the top priority.

    Find a group where you want to belong. Harvard is a big school with thousands of adventures waiting to be explored- don't try to tackle it alone.

    I am getting the best education I could have imagined. The profs are terrific - not only are they world class but they also take an active interest in their undergrads. I have also cross-registered at MIT for some classes, which have also been great.

    Security is taken very seriously by Harvard. The Harvard Police Department is very hardworking and friendly. They are there to help students and keep them safe. Parents should feel very comfortable sending their children to Harvard. Harvard is in an expensive, safe, and beautiful city and the campus is highly protected.

    There are final clubs and occasional parties for those who want a greek life.

    There is a wonderful selection of clubs for all types of people. There are COMPS, or mini tests to become part of a club, but they tend to be fairly easy and once you're in you can enjoy more of the learning and social networking experience.

Finally, the experience of a lifetime to be with the best and brightest is priceless!
    What to do for fun

    Spending quality time with your floor mates tends to be very fun, but if you are looking for more fun you can always join more clubs. They are quite fun and a wonderful learning experience. Some clubs even have free trips to foreign countries and free food! There are also many good concerts on and off campus of all types of music, and if they are off-campus many times Harvard students get discounts. The Freshman Formal is also a great highlight of the Harvard social experience.

    The food tends to be very good and healthy. If you are vegetarian you will find many menu options and a daily salad and sandwich bar. The dining staff also considers any suggestions and has the policy that is you don't see something you can ask if they have it in the kitchen and they'll bring it to you. There is also a grill, an on-the-go bagged lunch, and night snacks.
    Dorm Life

    The dorms or living arrangements can vary very much. Some students live in suites, others in singles and doubles. Some dorms are very large and beautiful, like those in Apley, but some make be average like those in Canaday, who are considered the worst, but really compared to other dorms in other colleges they are typical.

    Harvard's academic reputation is well deserved as it places a heavy emphasis on learning through application and experience inside and outside the classroom. Its many courses are challenging, but very helpful in aiding students discover their strengths, passions, and new knowledge.

    Make sure to spend some quality time writing the essay and an supplemental essays. They should be inspiring, honest, and reflective of the unique person that you are. Take the most challenging courses you can and excel in them. Study hard for the SATs and you should be fine.

    hupd is ever-present, and nearly all gates into campus and the upperclassmen houses are locked after a certain hour.

    while there are a few sororities and fraternities, the social scene is focused on the final clubs, which are exclusive groups that control a house or building off campus. these clubs are not affiliated with the university, and were made famous in the social network.
    What to do for fun

    with downtown boston a ten minute ride away on the t (subway), there is plenty to do ranging from concerts to red sox games at fenway to simply cruising newbury street for food and shops. harvard square is filled with great restaurants as well, although there is not much to do for fun directly adjacent to harvard.
    Food and Dining

    hit or miss. sometimes the food is pretty delicious. other times, improvisation is required to feel satisfied. the grill, a counter at each dining hall which allows you to get food made to order is invaluable.
    Dorm Life

    dorms are nice, with an authentic feeling. they do not resemble traditional, hotel-like dorms at all. for freshmen guys, dorm life is mediocre. expect a lot of time spent with the bros. for girls however, the final clubs are accessible, so the social scene is better. after freshman year, many opportunities appear socially.
    Academic Rigor

    i came into harvard expecting the rigor to knock me down and make me feel like an idiot. it turns out that while classes are difficult, they are far from unmanageable. more difficult is managing your schedule and everything in it in addition to academics.

    don't lose sight of your goal of a great college during the hectic times of junior year and college apps. try to remain well rounded, taking the most rigorous courses available, and your persistence will pay off.

    Greek life is not a huge part of the Harvard social scene. In fact the university doesn't even recognize the frats and sororities. However, there are quite a few Greek organizations, so it is definitely an option for people who are interested.

    Dining Halls are incorporated into the House system, with each House having its own dining hall. The dining halls of most Houses are beautiful and the freshman dining hall is breath-takingly gorgeous. The food is as repetitive as any other college dining program, but the quality is definitely above average.
    Dorm Life

    Students reside in Houses (Harry Potter style) that are the social center of the Harvard experience. 98% of students live on campus, which allows for a tight-knit community within the houses. Additionally, the Harvard dorms are gorgeous old colonial-style buildings. The living conditions on the inside of the buildings is pretty variable, and in some Houses rodents and crowded rooms can be expected. However, most students can expect single rooms within suites by sophomore or junior year.
    Academic Rigor

    Academics at Harvard are certainly not easy and can be extremely competitive depending on your major. Classes are demanding and the work is hard, but it is worth it. At Harvard, we get to learn from professors who are the top in the field. This makes for a very rewarding academic experience. And while the work is difficult, there is no need to worry; the rumors about grade inflation are true.

    Throw yourself into your extra curricular activities. Every kid here had great grades in high school and excellent test scores. What will set you apart from other applicants to Harvard is your commitment to doing what you love.

    Harvard is on the edge of a city (Boston), but if you use street smarts and stay alert it is pretty safe. There is the occasional robbery, but it is not widespread.

    Harvard has its own police department with the city of Cambridge, and there are always officers to find when you need them. HUPD (Harvard University Police Department) officers are very friendly and legitimately care about the students. They are all very approachable, more than you'd think for a cop, and they're fun to chat with!

    There are frats/sororities, but many people don't go into them because students associate more than anything with their dorm houses.
    Clubs and Activities

    There are over 400 clubs/organizations on campus, which means that there is literally something for everyone.

    There is a huge gate called Johnston Gate that students supposedly never enter or exit through except for twice their whole lives: once when you first arrive on campus in August, and once after you graduate as a senior.     Harvard has a great financial aid program that makes it possible for every student to attend without hardship. If your family makes under about $75,000 annually, it is basically all covered. If your family makes a tad more than this, only a few percent of tuition is expected.
    What to do for fun

    There are a TON of clubs and organizations to join (over 400), which means that there is bound to be something that every student could join. There are several museums that are breathtaking, and virtually every building in Cambridge is free entrance to students with a Harvard ID.
    Food and Dining

    The food is absolutely incredible. I don't think I've ever seen another college campus with any comparable food. There are countless options for all types of eaters: vegetarian, vegan, Muslim, Jewish, and more. Meals vary every day, but basics are still maintained every day for the less adventurous eaters.
    Dorm Life

    I stayed with a couple current students there, and the dorm I was in was incredible. It had a lot of history, for it was where George Washington's men stayed at during the Revolutionary War. But rest assured, Harvard keeps the facilities upgraded and up to date.
    Academic Rigor

    I mean, it's Harvard. It's definitely going to be strenuous work, but with it comes a great overall college experience. There will be a lot of (analytical) writing, and I'm a bit nervous. But I have taken many AP courses that I believe will have prepared me for a bit of what I'm about to experience.
    Tips for prospective students

    Definitely keep your grades up in high school, while taking challenging courses like AP, IB, and Honors. Spread yourself out as much as possible within the realm of enjoying and taking pride in what you do. Start a club you are interested in, join organizations, do community service. When it comes to the essays of the application, read accepted essays! You really have to wow the admissions committee and stand out from the others. Start with something that absolutely grabs readers.

    Excellent safety methods are maintained. Beyond the dorm heads, there a campus police and building securities that are very evident. There is even a fire station on campus.

    There are many events throughout the year to attend. Some are organized by the University, some are by local organizations in the city. Many are by clubs.     The food is obtained by self serving. Atmosphere is a pleasant dining experience, rather than cafeteria type of venue. Dining halls are open for most of the day. Students are able to go online and see what is available for all meal times. Students have their favorite meals.

    Freshman dorm life is wonderful. Freshman are housed in an area that is close to the administrative departments for the transition into college life. Dorm mates are coordinated to the best possible combinations in students' likes and dislikes. The freshman dorm rooms are spacious and as well furnished as possible.

    Maintaining a full load of courses in each semester is very time consuming. Some would categorize the academic rigor as intensive. Academic rigor is manageable if student is astute and keeps up with learning and projects at the required pace.

    Pay close attention to application deadlines. Make use of counselors in planning courses to take. Be open to meeting and interacting with people with different backgrounds and views, while bringing your own to the table.

    If you make less than $180,000 a year your tuition is free at the college. Other schools of Harvard also have great financial aid. You can take classes at the Extension or Summer schools for some really affordable prices, too.

    I have never felt unsafe at Harvard, regardless of time of day or location. Robberies happen, but they are uncommon, and they almost exclusively happen to people walking alone through sketchy areas in the middle of the night while listening to music. Have a tiny bit of common sense and there is no danger at all.
    Greek Life

    There are two fraternities and three sororities. They have parties and stuff, and rush week is kind of a big thing, but they are not a huge part of campus life.
    Clubs and Activities

    There are something like 400 student organizations. Community service opportunities are especially distinguished. The Harvard Crimson is among the finest student publications in the country, and the only one that has its own printing presses. There are lots of ethnic and religious organizations that hold lots of events that usually have excellent food. Basically, there is something for everyone.

    Most people are nerds in some way, but usually not stereotypical nerds. To succeed at Harvard you have to be smart and very motivated; you must be tolerant of people with different backgrounds. It helps to have a sense of humor, and human decency is highly valued. Beyond that, however, every kind of person exists at Harvard.

    There are three things that every Harvard student, supposedly, must do before graduating: have sex in Widener Library, streak around Harvard Yard on the last night before finals begin (an event known as Primal Scream) and urinate on the statue of John Harvard.

If that's not your cup of tea, Harvard Square is the ideal college town, with lots of quality, affordable food (especially pizza), a movie theater, great places to walk and stuff open until 2:00 a.m. I'm told the party scene isn'Â?t what it is other places, but if you want to dance you can find somewhere to do it. Granted, I'm not the type for partying, but the environment and the people around me were so stimulating that I never found myself with a lack of things to do.
    Food and Dining

    People hate on the food because it isn'Â?t as good as everything else. It really isn'Â?t too bad, though; the quality is a symptom of preparing for 1,600 people in the same kitchen, and there is almost always something that is more than satisfactory to eat. (Also, that mostly applies to freshman dining; as an upperclassman, everything gets better.)
    Dorm Life

    The College does a lot to foster community between students in the same hall or entryway. It gives lots of money for community-building events, parties, free food and the like, and at least in my case it worked. My entryway had two proctors (R.A.'s) who were married with a baby, and they really pulled our group together, helping to create friendships that still exist a year later.
    Academic Rigor

    Classes are hard. Your sleep schedule will likely become irregular and inadequate, and you may grow to like napping a lot. Actually, there is a lot of variation: If you are a math or science person, savor all the sleep you can get and prepare to spend lots of time in the library. Humanities concentrators, you'Â?ll have it easier--Â?at least until the end of the term when you have three papers and two finals all due in the same week. (I should add that classes at Harvard are the most amazing experience I have ever had. They are fantastic in every way.)

    If you get in, you want to come here. Don'Â?t be too intimidated: yes, everyone is smart and really impressive, but you are too! Everyone is awesomely accomplished, but each in a different way; the result is that everyone feels inferior to everyone else for a little bit, and then no one does and they settle into learning from each other.

    It is everything you hear about and more. Harvard is a community of people who are magnificently varied in every way, but share strong motivation, intellectual curiosity and kindness. The College does a fantastic job of fostering a rigorous and exciting yet homely environment that fulfills every academic and social need.

    Campus security is solid at every gate into campus and can be called for any emergency.

    There are fraternities and sororities, but Harvard also has a system of Finals Clubs which are very similar, but have a pretty vast history.

    Harvard has more clubs and student-run organizations to count! They are each geared for specific interests and talents and there is something for everyone. From clubs to athletics, everything brings something special.

    Right outside of Harvard's main campus is Harvard Square, with great shops and places to eat. Beyond that, is a T Station that puts all of Boston at your finger tips. You can go shopping in the North End, go see the amazing historical sights like Freedom Trail, a concert, improv show, or any of Boston's professional sports teams [Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics, Bruins]. Plus, there's always fun stuff to do on campus!

    Every college has ups and downs with dining hall eats. Sometimes the only negative is getting there early enough to make sure you get that slice of prime rib. There's always a good variety though, you will find something you like!
    Dorm Life

    When you fill out your housing application for Harvard, freshman year, they do a fairly good job placing you with people whom you share interests with, but also with people with vastly different experiences. You meet a plethora of different people here, and within dorm life is where the diversity begins. Actual dorms aren't bad either, you just have to remember that Harvard is pretty old, although they do keep up with renovations, not to worry!

    Harvard is a highly rigorous school, but it's more about what you put into it that's going to decide your success rate.

    Do: Stay calm. It's intimidating, but one of the most welcoming and supportive communities I have ever been a part of. Don't: Listen to stereotypes. People here all have something special about them, just because everyone can't get in, doesn't mean the people who do are over-privileged, or undeserving. Students here are very down to earth, humbled and grateful.

    From my research, Harvard has an excellent security system to protect students and it starts on the student ID cards. There are computer chips integrated into the identification cards that only allow selected individuals to enter private rooms. For those with security concerns, a brick may be lifted from you mind.

    I have walked everywhere around town by myself, sometimes in the dark, and I have felt very safe even as a female by myself. I have gotten lost a few times, and each time I have been given wonderful directions by friendly, helpful people.

    It's an incredible deal, perfect especially for adults wanting to go back to school, as the average age of the student population is 35. It's a much better way to channel your mid-life crisis than the stereotypical tales!

    Harvard Extension School is an amazing deal. When started over 100 years ago by the current Harvard University President at the time, he stated �it would seem to be the duty of every institution of learning in this country to use its resources for the benefit of the surrounding community.� And Harvard Extension School continues to do today by making their prices affordable, and admittance less exclusive.
    What to do for fun

    Harvard Square is full of places to shop, eat, and socialize. There are nearby theaters to view talented productions of different plays and musicals, and museums to explore, all within walking distance. Harvard is also located conveniently close to the subway system that can get you around to nearby Boston for a few dollars. If weather permits, plan on walking the Freedom Trail or along the harbor in Boston.

Although many of the required classes for the degree are available online, you will need to meet the on campus requirement for four courses, which can be taken during winter or summer session. Consider the cost of staying near campus for those four courses when considering this degree.

    I would rate Harvard a ten for sure. Everything about them says sophisticated education. Their website, the name, every detail is obviously carefully put together. I love the care and effort they have put into their site as well. It really says something when a college puts their heart and soul into their site. I think this is definately the college for me. They are as dedicated towards their design as I am toward my schoolwork, and that is reassuring. Too many times, I have seen colleges snap booklets and web pages together. It's different when a college has genuine care for the assignments they complete.

    Security and the local Cambridge police are phenomenal. One needn't worry about this facet of college life. While Cambridge certainly has its fair share of homeless individuals, one's safety never feels compromised.

    I've never seen a program quite like HARVARD ONE event before. This is a yearly tradition, if you will.     Apply early, friends. Go to Open House - they are FOR you! I attended an Open House last year and was amazed at how comfortable I felt in the environment. Do not make an suppositions based on the prestige of the school. The students, faculty and staff - well, the population I've been exposed to - are down-to-earth and all about helping you find a right fit. Do not sell yourself short! Apply! Ask for guidance, and again APPLY.

The professors and staff are wholeheartedly committed to the all encompassing development of all students - undergraduate or graduate.
