Categories Comments Great for these types of students People who can balance having fun and working hard.
Tips for prospective students Just make sure you keep up with the work load from the beginning. Do not schedule any classes before 9. Also, live in the off-campus housing, it is much cheaper and closer to more activities.
Bang for the buck For a private college, this school comes at a great price. There are a lot of scholarships. The classes are interesting and the professors try hard.
Am enjoying being here The school is beautiful and the people are all really nice. There are people from all over the world, and every day something new is going on.
Am learning a lot The foreign language and business classes here are taught really well and the students actually learn applicable material. The small class sizes allow for a lot of focus on areas specific to the individual students.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Students who are willing to work hard and manage their time wisely.
Tips for prospective students Work hard in college. Do not just try to get by. You are working to get a job. Not a degree. I mean a degree is important, but there are lots of people who are losing their jobs even if they have a Bachelors Degree or even a Masters Degree. Try to find places where you can do volunteer work or internships so you understand what you need to do the job you are going to do.
Bang for the buck I think that the cost for living in the Hawaii Loa Residence Halls is too overpriced. Getting an apartment will save you money for sure!
Am enjoying being here Everybody is nice at the Hawaii Loa Residence Halls.
Am learning a lot Pick your professors carefully. Some of them will not really teach you anything new.

Tips for prospective students Upon deciding which college I wanted to attend, I was always reminded from an academic counselor that, College is a match to be made, not a prize to be won. Students who choose to a college just for its name is not a good idea. However, if the students really want to attend that school, by all means. For students who are interested in attending HPU, my remarks are stated above. Overall, as long as students to their work, ask questions in class, participate in class discussions, and further their learning outside the classroom, college is like high school, except at a much higher level. In addition, time management is a skill that students should really be good at, especially for students who are well-rounded.
Bang for the buck The price may seem costly, but that’s what scholarship and Financial Aid is for. As I previously mentioned, professors will ultimately teach and ensure that their students are earning the learning experience and education they are paying for. HPU offers many different scholarships for prospective and current students. Outside scholarships and grants are also very helpful to pay for tuition and other college-related expenses. I think that with scholarships and grants, the education I am paying for at HPU is a fairly reasonable price.
Am enjoying being here I am currently taking all of my class in the downtown campus where HPU’s buildings are scattered in various places. However, although HPU has multiple buildings all over downtown, it should not take more than seven minutes to travel from one class to another. I find that the location of HPU’s downtown campus is highly convenient for every student attending the school. There are many restaurants ranging from Mexican to Filipino Restaurants and Italian to Local dining eateries. In addition, there are clothing shops such as Macy’s, Ross, and Local Fever where students are able to buy clothes within walking distance from school. Furthermore, if students need to buy school supplies, grocery shop, or other necessities, there is Longs, Fishers Hawaii, and Chinatown which are all again, within walking distance. Aside from what is located around campus, though, the students, faculty, and staff of HPU really show the “Aloha Spirit.” People hold the door for each other, say a friendly hello, greet each other, and smile at everyone who they pass by, even if they haven’t even met. If someone is having a difficult time navigating their way around campus or town, there are security guards who are variously stationed and can be found practically anywhere you need them to ask for directions. Overall, I am highly enjoying my time at HPU and would recommend my school to all students. Also, there is a shuttle that is free for students for transportation from both the Windward and Downtown campuses.
Am learning a lot Although this is just my first semester and third month at Hawaii Pacific University, I must admit that it has been, so far, the greatest three months of learning I have ever received since grade school. I am currently taking five courses: COM 1200, WRI 1100, CSCI 1011, ARTS 1000, and MATH 1105. The instructors I have are profoundly passionate about what they teach. Furthermore, HPU instructors remarkably do their best to help when students are in need of assistance. Students are free to let the instructor know whether or not the pacing of the lecture is too quick, too slow, or just right. When students are stressing before a test, HPU instructors carefully explain to the students what to know and review what will be on the test. In COM 1200, I have learned that mid-terms, finals, and other tests are a “celebration of knowledge.” With that in mind, I became more excited to learn about new concepts, new lessons, and further my knowledge than simply skim at through the surface of new ideas. One of the most important things that I have learned in all my classes is the importance of understanding. I realized how each of my professors has taken into account that not all students are at the same level of understanding. Therefore, each professor would ensure that they are teaching at the level to which all students are able to understand what is going on in the class. Especially since there are foreign exchange students, I condemn my instructors for clearly explaining the syllabus and what is expected to earn an A for their class. HPU professors really take the time to ensure that students receive the full education and learning they paid for.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Hawaii Pacific University are for students who like an adventure. Those who enjoys outdoors activities such as hiking, camping, swimming and etc. It is also perfect for those who wants to live in a tropical weather year round. Also for those who wants to attend a University that is very diverse. Those who are open to experiencing and learning new cultures. I believe all students will have a great time in HPU.
Tips for prospective students Always finish your studies before playing. Yes, the beach is a few minutes away but don't let it distract you. Learn to take the city bus, is the easiest way to get around the island and to school if you do not drive. Hawaii Pacific University offers many resources, make sure to make use of them. For examples academic advising is excellent in helping you plan your 4 years in college.
Bang for the buck Hawaii Pacific University is a private college, meaning that it is more costly than a public university but the cost is worth it. HPU is technologically updated, having multiple computer labs available. Also the courses you take are taught by professors who are experts in that subject, knowing that you are being taught by the best. HPU is a student orientated campus, they cater to their students. Academically HPU excels but also socially. HPU has a lot of events for the students to enjoy. Also there many services that are available due to the tuition that you pay. Like tutoring, multiple lounges, advising, events and many more.
Am enjoying being here Hawaii Pacific University is situated in paradise. The campus is near the ocean and the mountains, making it easy not to be bored. From hearing this you might think that the school is in the middle of the tropics, but HPU has it's main campus in downtown right by the infamous Waikiki. HPU has many clubs and organization to join. For example I am currently in Student Government and C.A.B. (Campus Activities Board) HPU provides many events that are student oriented. Additionally HPU is a very diverse campus, where you can have class that has multiple nationalities and having that you make friends who are lives halfway around the world.
Am learning a lot Hawaii Pacific University offers many courses. I am currently a freshman and this university is great on transitioning from high school to college. What's best about HPU is the class sizes. For most of the classes taught in HPU class sizes are around 25 students. Having such small classes gives a great teacher to student ratio. From this small class sizes you are more able to learn efficiently and ask the professors on one on one help. HPU provides tutoring both on campus and on-line.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Personally, I feel safe throughout both campuses but no matter where you go to school, you need to always be aware of your surroundings and have a plan in case something goes wrong. Just turn on the news and you will quickly see that Honolulu has crime just like any other city. I feel safe most of the time because I think we have a very good security team and good inter-campus transportation.
Greek Life Sorry but there is no Greek life at HPU. If that's what you're looking for you may want to check out UH. I personally think it is better without all the rushing and parties but then again you don't need fraternities to find a party. Our school is fine just the way it is and no one is trying to make a bogus impression on you so you will want to join their fraternity or sorority.
Clubs and Activities There are countless clubs and organizations to join based on your interests. Your first week will include a fair on The Fort Street Mall where all of these clubs will showcase their interests. If there isn't a club that interests you then you can possibly start one up with the help of faculty. The clubs are a great way to make new friends. There are also a lot of intramural sports to get involved in if you are athletically inclined. This is a good way to keep playing the sport that you love even if you aren't on one of HPU's Division II teams.
Great for these types of students HPU is great for all types of students, although if I had to make a choice, I would have to say that HPU is perfect for anyone wanting to pursue a degree in marine science or environmental science. Maybe even archaeology or anthropology. The surroundings and culture are perfect for anyone interested in these majors. Also, if you love the sun and being surrounded by water and good people, you will like it here. If you don't like to be far from home or you get extremely homesick by being away for too long, then Hawaii may not be a good location for you.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus I don't know about unusual traditions but most of my friends and I enjoy hanging out on the Fort Street Mall during the school day. Weekends are kind of dead around campus so we like to shop or go to the beach. There's lots of beaches to choose from.
Bang for the buck Let's face it, Hawaii is not a cheap place to live. But if you ask the right questions and listen to students that have been there a while, you will find local venues to shop cheaper. Buy fresh produce because it's less expensive. Oh, and definitely buy a bus pass! The Bus takes you anywhere you want to go. You won't want to be without it. Trust me. Now that I'm familiar with the island, I decided to buy a bike on Craigslist. I can get from my room at the Ohia to the downtown campus within 25 minutes. So that is another idea that will save you some money. Also, get a job. Your parents will thank you.
What to do for fun This is the best part! Whether you are a laid back kind of person or an adventurous, thrill seeker, you will find something fun to do. Some kids like to hang out on the beach all weekend and others like to climb the mountains and volcanoes for thrills and spectacular views of the ocean. There are fun fests all the time around town. There are also world class surfing competitions to sit and watch (or compete in). Other than sitting in your room all the time, there is no way to get board here. Please don't forget how important it is to volunteer some free time, too. The nature center, the aquarium and the homeless shelters appreciate volunteers. It's fun and you get to know people who live around the area. It could also help you get an internship eventually. So it is a good idea for everyone involved!
Food and Dining Well, I gave this three stars but only because of the eateries off campus, not because of the on campus dining. This is probably my only complaint about HPU. The cafeteria is awful. Okay, maybe not awful, but not that good. But, thank goodness for a lot of awesome restaurants around town. Your selections are pretty much endless. You can grab a juicy burger or order some yummy sushi. You can even get gutsy and try some traditional Hawaiian cuisine. The food throughout the Honolulu and Waikiki area is amazing.
Dorm Life I love the way the windward campus is set up. The dorms are sort of villa style. It's not one big building full of rooms. The rooms are small but manageable, not different from most dorm rooms. Go to your local Bed, Bath & Beyond to pick out your dorm essentials and pick them up at the store in Honolulu. Everything will be packed and ready for you. Towards the end of the year, you may want to look into renting a storage unit to keep your stuff since you may not be able to lug it all home with you. The rates are reasonable.
Academic Rigor Maybe it's my major but I find the professors expect a lot from each of us, in a good way, though. After all, we are now adults and I expect them to treat me as one. The courses may be rigorous but most of them are exciting as long as you keep up with due dates and studying. There are a lot of classes to choose from that teach you about the history of Hawaii and the customs and culture of her people. Take at least one or two courses and get to know these islands a little better.
Tips for prospective students Pack light. The dorm rooms are small but efficient. Be prepared to have an adjustment period - we all were homesick by November. But please, please, please, don't give in to your feelings of wanting to go home. They pass, I promise. I'm 6,000 miles from home. Believe me when I say that I was homesick but I came home for summer and could not wait to return. You will too.
In three sentences HPU is an incredible university with countless opportunities in an awesome environment! The windward campus is beautiful with lush, green trees and fragrant flowers with amazing views of the mountains. Everyone that works here, from the custodial staff to the professors to the President, are awesome and beautiful people.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students This school is great for those who like small classes, like to meet different kinds of people and are school spirited.
Tips for prospective students Hawaii Pacific University has great advisors to help you with every step of the way to make sure you become successful.
Bang for the buck There are many scholarships provided from this school, which allows your tuition to be at a reasonable price- it may seem like a very costly school, but it's not bad at all once you have scholarships. The shuttle to go from downtown to windward or vice versa is very convenient for those who have classes in both campuses. It's free and comes in about every half an hour.
Am enjoying being here I love being here; Hawaii Pacific University provides many cool clubs, events, and benefits to socialize with others. There are lots of convenient shops if you're in a rush, or if you just want to chill. Having so many people of different cultures and places makes this school unique and interesting. I am proud to be a Sea Warrior!
Am learning a lot The teachers allow you to meet up with them whenever you need help. There are many opportunities to help you understand a certain subject and the work isn't too overloading, even if you have 5 classes.

Categories Comments Campus Safety no one has ever had a problem with security, there are security guards all over campus and are just as chill as the students until there's a problem. anyone who is not a student or unaccompanied by a student can't enter campus through the gate so we never have any problems.
Greek Life non existent, in fact not allowed.
Clubs and Activities hpu has over 50 clubs that are easy and fun to join. there is a club carnival every semester to introduce you to these clubs.
Great for these types of students for people who love adventure and are okay with a slower pace of life.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus the loa campus is huge with a lot to do, soccer field, baseball diamond, community garden, taro farm, gym, game room, dining commons. there's always something to do on campus.
Bang for the buck hpu is quite expensive but the experience here is priceless. for example during my final exam in my mars 1020 class on the boat, we all stopped the exam to follow a group of manta rays and green sea turtles. what other school can offer that?
What to do for fun anything!!! we go to the beach, go surfing, snorkeling, shopping, water parks, movie theaters, kayaking, whale watching... the possibilities are endless. okay nightlife with a few clubs being free for hpu students on friday nights
Food and Dining occasionally there will be good food, but rarely. the only nice thing is that there's always salad, fruit, and a grill if the normal food isn't up to par.
Dorm Life the people in the dorms are always fun. the loa campus is a completely dry campus but there are always parties somewhere on campus. we don't really do that many activities since hpu residence life has some of the strictest liability policies i have ever seen. but we still participate in some activities like humans v zombies and super halls (where all the halls compete against each other, kind of like the house cup in harry potter). as for the downtown campus, i don't know that much about it but i've heard it's not a nice place to live.
Academic Rigor you don't have to study too hard since most professors make the subject interesting so you want to pay attention in lecture. it's hard to fail most classes here, but it's also difficult to get an a.
Tips for prospective students don't listen to the advisors, most of them will intentionally sign you up for classes you don't need so that they get more money. every requirement is online and you can sign up for classes online so there's really no need to see an advisor.
In three sentences the teachers here actually care about you learning something rather than the grade you receive in the class. the students are friendly and it's a great learning atmosphere. overall it's a great school if you're coming to college to learn as much as you can before entering the job market.

Categories Comments Campus Safety They patrol everyday, and they are nice and helpful!
Greek Life There is no greek life here. The old president was strictly against it, so there was never a chance to create one.
Clubs and Activities There are 50 clubs at HPU, and it is a great way for you to connect with other students and boost your resume up.
Great for these types of students HPU is great for students who wants a culturally diverse student body. 1/3 of the students who attend HPU is international students. Also if you want a taste of Hawaii while going to school, then this is the perfect option.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Once a year we have The Freak Show where you can perform in any talent that you might have. We also have club carnival, where you display your club. And also Intercultural day, where students from different countries can show everyone their culture.
Bang for the buck HPU raised the tuition now to almost $10,000 a semester. This is outrageous, considering the poor academic level you are receiving. Unless you are on a scholarship, I would consider other schools.
What to do for fun You can go on awesome hikes, such as stairways to heaven and Maunawilli falls. the beaches are also awesome, where you can do all kind of activities, such as surfing, kite boarding, parasailing etc
Food and Dining There is not much to choose from. Mostly asian food, which can get very boring after a while.
Dorm Life Dorm here are horrible! No A/C and poorly kept. They are improving them but its still bad. It's better to find an off campus housing.
Academic Rigor Unless you are a science major, then the academic level is not very high. Knowledge wise is a setback, but if you want a high GPA for less work, then you are in the right spot.
Tips for prospective students HPU has a rolling admission, which means that you can apply anytime before the semester begins. But you should send in all required documents before that, because HPU employees work extremely slow! And you might want to get on their case to see if they have processed your application.
In three sentences Average Level Education, fun outdoor life, and making friends from all over the world.

Categories Comments Campus Safety we have security everywhere! on the windward campus you have to actually check in with the guard to get on campus! they are all very nice and will give you rides on their carts at night.
Greek Life none this is a small private college.
Clubs and Activities lots of clubs and activities, there is a whole list on the hpu website.
Great for these types of students athletic (not football, we don't have a team), good academic standing, kinda laid back, marine bio majors, international studies majors (good programs for theses two).
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus there are two campuses. one in downtown honolulu, the other on the windward side of the island between kaneohe and kailua. on the downtown campus there are two student lounges. one is kinda loud because there is a pool and ping-pong table. the other is more of a homework lounge because it is quiet and has desks!
Bang for the buck sometimes it seems that they are just trying to get your money but usually they give you pretty good deals. many shops and resturants will give discounts to hpu students!
What to do for fun beach, mall, movies, and going to waikiki!!!
Food and Dining meal plan for the dorm life is kinda iffy. you get two meals a day and have to pay for the third. most times the food is good but sometimes its not. they have vegan and vegetarian options along with a grill.
Dorm Life i love it here. its small but homie, you get a nice sense of community. people here become your second family. the internet is not great, especially at midterms and finals. it is getting better though because they are putting in a new system.
Academic Rigor teachers can be pretty lenient on work. everybody is more than willing to help you with questions. if you haven't already check out . quite a helpful site that i didnt know about until i got here. it can also be used for any other college, as long as they are registered on the site.
Tips for prospective students if you can afford it i would recommend staying in the dorms! if not then get an apartment. you will want to stay away from the off campus housing because they are crap (not worth your money).
In three sentences great college! everyone here is so nice and accommodating! they really want to see you succeed. you want to be right on top of everything and if you feel something is not getting done fast enough then jut make a call and they will see whats taking so long!

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are security guards around, however the downtown campus has a lot of homeless people.
Greek Life Non-existant
Clubs and Activities They are lacking but in recent years they are improving. I believe that with in a couple years it will be sufficient.
Great for these types of students Great for students who often need to talk to a teacher to recieve help.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The campus is located in a beautiful Hawaiian area with a nice view. The students are just a bus ride away from the beach.
Bang for the buck Tuition is rising fast at HPU but if you work it right you can graduate early and save money.
What to do for fun Students often leave campus to go the the beach or go in town to explore a more city life.
Food and Dining The food is good and you are allowed to eat as much as you want. The only problem is that you have to attend meals at specified times.
Dorm Life Food comes with dorm expenses, however, students often complain about the current dorming conditions.
Academic Rigor I was in the pre-med program, which was very difficult. I didn't have much of a social life or any free time. Other programs are easier and students in them have time to have fun and surf!
Tips for prospective students It's a growing school with a new president and everything seems to be improving. Be sure that you talk to other students because some people become homesick and others have desires to leave the island.
In three sentences Hawaii Pacific University has turned out to be a great school for me and many of my classmates. Its best attributes are its ethnic divdersity and small class sizes. The people and professors are personal and friendly.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Downtown campus is completely disgusting. If you are a major other than science and nursing, I would NOT attend HPU. The downtown campus is located right next to chinatown in downtown honolulu. There is no actual campus. HPU just rents out random rooms and partial buildings on a strip called Fort Street Mall. This area is literally covered in homeless and mentally ill. Disease ridden homeless line the sidewalks, often having gaping sores and wounds. Oh, and the smell... if you have a weak stomach good luck breathing while on campus. Campus security just rides around on their scooters, but I've never seen them actually do anything but stand around and gossip. They are useless. We even had a mentally ill person go around campus, into the library (where security sits at the entrance) and molest women. They didn't even catch him on the way out. It happened a couple times. There was also an attempted mugging at the shuttle stop in broad daylight. Luckily the guy was too insane to even function and the girl wasn't harmed. Windward campus doesn't need security because it's so isolated.
Greek Life No sororities or fraternities of any kind.
Clubs and Activities Not many clubs with active on campus activities.
Great for these types of students Marine Science students looking for a more personal learning environment from professors with real experience.
Bang for the buck I transferred from a state school in Florida and the tuition here is much higher although the facilities at UWF were like heaven compared to HPU. The marine science program is lacking outside of strictly academic lectures, having a pretty sad comparison to UH's own marine biology island off the Kaneohe Bay.
What to do for fun There isn't much of anything to do on campus, really. Very limited student lounging areas.
Food and Dining Windward campus only has the cafeteria and the closest food off campus is 30 minutes by bus. The cafeteria has very limited hours and if you are on campus all day like me (7:30am-8:40pm) then your classes often overlap with the cafeteria times, meaning you only have overpriced vending machines to provide you food. The downtown campus has plenty of food options (if you like ethnic/diverse foods) and a McDonalds.
Dorm Life There are only a couple dorm buildings on campus (only the windward campus) and it is completely unaffordable. You could rent a house for what a three person dorm room costs. Dorm facilities are incredibly limited as well. The dorms are extremely isolated with only one food option. Unless you have a car, have fun sitting on the bus for at least an hour to get anywhere.
Academic Rigor Classes are time consuming and often difficult, but you get out of the class what you put in. If you give each class your best effort then you will be more than fine. The general education courses are extremely easy and considered easy A courses, but prerequisite and upper division courses can be very challenging.
Tips for prospective students If you are considering HPU for marine science or nursing, then I still recommend. The marine science program is lacking in facilities and equipment for a university, but the professors are amazing and class sizes are small. The professors make the program worth it, but the program as a whole seems a bit under-funded.
In three sentences HPU didn't turn out anything like I expected, and to be honest I'm extremely disappointed. If I wasn't already in my third year of college (I was a transfer student), I would be willing to spend extra money on tuition and transfer to UH.

Categories Comments Greek Life There isn't greek like at Hawaii Pacific University.
Bang for the buck Watch out, some of the majors are claimed to be unaccredited
What to do for fun There are sports there, but they recently cut the cheer leading program.
Food and Dining There are a few good restaurants on the fort street mall, which is where the campus is.
Dorm Life The only dorms available are on the Hawaii Loa side. Where there is little transportation to and from the other side of the island. While they are beautiful they aren't very accessible.
Academic Rigor The classes at Hawaii Pacific aren't the most challenging classes. Many of the teachers challenge you. Ask around before taking a class, it's the easiest way to find which class would be a good fit for you.
Tips for prospective students I wouldn't make this your first choice school if you're expecting to have a challenging college experience. Many of the teachers aren't what you would expect when you head to college. The science majors are the most rigorous fields, while the other majors seem to be more of a laid back pathway.
In three sentences Not exactly what I was expecting academically. Reasonable class sizes, many good teachers. However it's not a school for everyone.

Categories Comments Campus Safety It is pretty safe, the crazies do come out at night though downtown.
Greek Life No Greek life sorry!
Clubs and Activities Lots of clubs to be a part of!
Bang for the buck It is actually listed on a few different sites that you get the most for your money and it is true, lots of people are going to other colleges spending what I would spend in two years and I go full time!
Food and Dining On campus it is ok, but there are so many great restaurants, especially downtown!
Dorm Life I don't live in the dorms, but I here they are a bit noisy a little hard to study in. There are plenty of places around the dorms to study! Stay away from the Ohia.
Academic Rigor It is fairly easy, but you can take challenging classes.
Tips for prospective students Apply! It is a great school, lots of nice people to meet including the professors!
In three sentences It is a personal classroom, with a lot of opportunities. Lots of fun to do all over the island. A great fusion of cultures!

Categories Comments Campus Safety The security guards are nice, and friendly. There is 24 hour security, only residents of the dorms can enter the dorms, and security are always willing to walk you to your car, or help you in anyway. You feel very safe on campus.
Greek Life There are no fraternities or sororities, but they are trying to implement them in the next few years.
Clubs and Activities There are so man y clubs to choose from, and there are always fairs to inform you on the many clubs and activities that you can be a part of. You only need to go!
Great for these types of students For every type of student, there are so many options to choose from. There are athletics, clubs, student government, dance, cheer, academic praise, etc. There is something here for everybody.
Bang for the buck Tuition can be pricey, but if you strive to be involved, make friends, and go to class and learn, the money will be worth it.
What to do for fun There are so many things to do on the island of Hawaii, and it is easy to get around, the bus takes you everywhere. There are many hikes, activities sponsored by the school, you can visit the Polynesian Cultural Center, go shopping, etc. And you can ALWAYS go to the beach, soak up the sun, surf, paddle board, and more!
Food and Dining The dining commons' times can be challenging to work with. The times are an hour to two hours long, two to three times a day, and are all you can eat. The food is okay, but there are not many options to choose from. However, the downtown campus have many restaurants that you can eat at if you miss a meal, and they give discounts to students!
Dorm Life By living on campus you are able to meet people from all over the world. You have the opportunity to learn of new cultures, and experience new things. Dorm life allows you to appreciate what you have back home, but teaches you valuable lessons about finance, cleanliness, and respect.
Academic Rigor Depending on your course load, classes can be challenging, it's college! The professors strive to help you maintain your sanity, give detailed notes, and prepare you well for what you need to know on exams. By attending class regularly, and doing you homework promptly you are sure to succeed.
Tips for prospective students Strive to be punctual to classes, do not skip class for the beach, in the long run it is not worth it. And get involved! Go to the school sponsored events, and make those valuable acquaintances that will help you to succeed.
In three sentences The academic side to Hawaii Pacific University is great! Class sizes are small, and you get one-on-one time, if needed, from your professor and they strive to help you excel. However, the school spirit is lacking.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Extremely unsafe. Do not ever schedule a class after dark. Even during the daytime the crackheads wake up early to hang out on fort street mall. Drug deals are constantly occurring and security seems like they just came off the street last month. Countless sexual assaults have occurred in broad daylight, even inside the buildings. These have been committed by the homeless crowd, not the actual students.
Greek Life No such thing here.
Clubs and Activities There isn't actually any clubs or activities, but their will be a bunch of groups who pretend to have clubs. They pretend so that they can have resume building information like President of Korean Club at HPU. But in fact the clubs never meet or do anything.
Great for these types of students Foreigners who can not handle a traditional degree program at UH.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus They will have an intercultural fair every year, this is HPU's main marketing idea. They will take a bunch of pictures and post on the website and everywhere. This is 1 day each semester, so don't assume their is a huge party going on. By the way most of your classes are scheduled during this fair.
Bang for the buck With the tuition continually increasing, your best bet is to go through the painstaking UH registration system.
What to do for fun Travel to the outer islands, because their isn't anything fun to do on Oahu.
Food and Dining Honolulu has more than a few great places to eat.
Dorm Life There is no dorm. Your best bet is to share a condo with a friend.
Academic Rigor Occasionally in the core classes you will find teachers that are highly knowledgeable. Later you will find out that your degree program hires the same kind of teacher you would find at an unaccredited Christian school.
Tips for prospective students Expect and prepare for Tuition increases up to 25%. Never leave factual or self identifying information on the teacher evaluations at the end of the course. Instead, opt-out to be safe.
In three sentences Hawaii Pacific is the 3rd best University on Oahu out of 3. HPU has a cult-like following, and works like a pyramid scam. Only come if your interested for an unaccredited education in Hawaii.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are campus security guards from the minute you step on campus to the minute you leave. It is a very safe environment.
Greek Life There are no fraternity's or sororities at HPU, but people do not have any trouble with finding a group of friends that they connect with.
Clubs and Activities There are many clubs offered at HPU and you even have the chance to create your own club. I am a part of the United Nations club and its a great experience. They even organize a trip to New York to participate in the United Nations conference.
Great for these types of students For those who love diversity and being different, HPU is the perfect choice. It is not your typical college, but the experience will be memorable and life changing in a good way.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Our downtown campus is located next the the harbor, which calls for some amazing views and fresh air. It relieves most of the stress factors especially during midterms or finals.
Bang for the buck HPU is expensive, but worth it. I would only suggest that buying your books should not be done through their academic store, but through amazon or other students.
What to do for fun Hawaii has so much to offer with outdoor activities. There are too many hikes to count, mountain biking, swimming, kayaking, concerts, clubs - the list is endless! I have never been bored on this island, even though its small there is so much to do.
Food and Dining Hawaii is an Asian-based culture, so there is a lot of opportunity for sushi, but they also have great places to go for a more casual dining experience.
Dorm Life The dorms are in a beautiful location in the mountains, but they are somewhat isolated to the dorm community itself. Not many freshman have a car, so you result to taking the bus into work or to town which makes it more difficult. On the other hand I have never had a more fun time than living in the dorms and making new friends who will last a lifetime.
Academic Rigor HPU does not have the academic strain as Harvard or Yale, but it has a different academic atmosphere that tends to be more hands on learning. I have always struggled with school, but HPU gave me an opportunity to thrive academically.
Tips for prospective students If you are considering HPU as your college choice be prepared to make some tough decisions when selecting from the two amazing campus atmospheres. Of the two, there is one in the downtown area, which provides a city feel and the other is located on the mountain side surrounded with the natural greenery of the island. If you decide to commute to both, they have an inter-campus shuttle but it is not always the most convenient.
In three sentences Hawaii Pacific University is an excellent college choice for those individuals who want to experience a diverse culture. With a third of the students attending HPU being local Hawaiian, a third being from the mainland US and a third being international students, it would be a cultural experience that is incomparable. Hawaii pacific University is one of the top schools to gain a better understanding of the outside world because it is a melting pot of amazing people who contribute unique ideas inside the classroom.

Categories Comments Tips for prospective students Focus on your schoolwork from the very beginning. If you don't understand or find yourself falling behind, don't be afraid to talk to your teacher. Also, don't be afraid to use your resources--like the tutoring center. Both are very reliable and useful.
Am enjoying being here This university is my dream school! I had always wanted to study marine biology near the ocean so that I could participate in more hands-on learning. My first semester at HPU I was already on the catamaran, learning and experiencing.
Am learning a lot The teachers here are very knowledgeable and passionate about their subjects.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you love diversity and outdoors Hawaii Pacific is definitely for you. They have an outstanding science and nursing program if that is something of interest to you.
Bang for the buck For the most part you do get your moneys worth of education.
Am enjoying being here Not only is this a great school but I also get to live in one of the most beautiful places on earth. I have met so many people from all over the world and the mainland. I attend classes on both campuses and love being on the Windward side the most. Everywhere you look is green and the smell of the air after it rains is so refreshing. It was a great change from my environment back home.
Am learning a lot The student ratio to teacher is great. My writing class has only 20 students. You really get that more personal relationship with your professor and don't have to feel embarrassed to ask questions. I absolutely love the small class sizes.

Categories Comments Campus Safety very safe campus. leave my door unlocked all the time and have never had anything stolen.
Greek Life non existent :(
Great for these types of students nursing and marine biology, along with travel related majors
Bang for the buck good education and you can easily finish on time. not impacted or over crowded at all.
What to do for fun beach, hiking camping, surfing, swimming, parties, night clubs, art events, movies, tours, snorkeling, parasailing, diving, and wayy more. fun place to live.
Food and Dining food is not very good on campus, actually its gross. and you are required to pay for 14 meals per week. rip off big time!
Dorm Life there is not much in the way of parties and campus is very isolated from the other areas on the island.
Academic Rigor sciences are really hard here. 4 tests usually make up your intire grade. no homework points, extra credit or points for attendance.
Tips for prospective students make sure the school offers your major. plan for living off campus in your second year.
In three sentences i love this school. i think it is an awesome place to get an education, the only draw backs are how expensive living in hawaii is. i have to say its worth it, live in the dorms your first year, its the best way to make friends!

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are security at both the downtown campus and windward campus. For students living at the dorms, there two fire drills a year, one each semester. And for the downtown campus, there are sometimes unscheduled drills.
Greek Life For almost every major there are Greek organizations. If you continue to succeed throughout high school and even the first semester of college, you may receive a letter stating that you are a perfect candidate for a certain organization.
Clubs and Activities There are many clubs and organizations students can sign up for for almost every major. Students can even attempt to create their own clubs. On campus housing also runs a series of activities students who are dorming can become involved with.
Great for these types of students This school is great for students who want to explore. Students will meet students from all over the world and get to experience their culture.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Hawaii still holds many of its values. Thus stating, many of the professors may use Hawaiian phrases incorporated into English and refer back to ancient Hawaii during their lecture. Also, while traversing the island, you will notice how the natives keep their shoes outside just as the Japanese people do out of respect. Overall it is an experience to see for yourself.
Bang for the buck Being that this school is a private school, many believe the price to attend is going to be outrageous. However that is not true, HPU's tuition is about the same, maybe a little higher than University of California schools. I am, in addition, from California, and the tuition increase that is occurring is what made my decision to came to this school.
What to do for fun Since the school is on an island, there are a lot of fun things to do. The Windward campus is about 5 minutes away from the beach and mall. From the downtown campus, you can catch the bus to the mall as well and actually any part of the island. Night life too is spectacular. There are clubs and many fancy restaurants where you can hang out with your friends and have a nice time.
Food and Dining Living on campus covers your dining expenses. The cafeteria is buffet style with a grill where you can order food that is available. For off campus residence, there is a program called the OCMP (Off Campus Meal Plan) that allows students buy food from nearby restaurants that are participating in the program.
Dorm Life The dorms are alright, however they can be much better. This is for the on campus housing. There is too, additional off campus housing downtown. You get to meet a lot of new people in the dorms, so I recommend it.
Academic Rigor This actually depends on the type of student you are. At times, the course load may be overwhelming, but most of the time the professors are primarily aware of your major and other classes, so they try not to make it difficult. Again the are really small, so students have more time to sit down and work out any problems with the professor.
Tips for prospective students I recommend students to apply for the this school. The school also gives scholarships and grants based on high school achievement, so continue string hard in high school.
In three sentences Hawaii Pacific University is a great school for those who like smaller classes. The faculty and Professors are always there for you, whether it be planning classes, or more one on one time. Besides the fact that this is Hawaii, you will meet students from all around the word, thus allowing you a more worldly experience.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Excellent they have 24hr. surveillance.
Greek Life No Greek Life. Maybe someone can start one. ;)
Clubs and Activities They have an assortment of honor programs. Go see their website to find out all the unconventional clubs they have.
Great for these types of students People who enjoy different cultures and new people.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus I have no ideal but I'll find out soon.
Bang for the buck It is very much worth it since the school is private and tuition is only 18,000 dollars.
What to do for fun I've heard that they have many clubs her such as the surfing club, yoga club, the beach, and many other fun activities.
Food and Dining Not completely sure. LOL I hope its great!
Dorm Life I can't really help with the dorm life much since i haven't been yet, but i have seen them and they are great!.
Academic Rigor It is very changeling and worth your money... The people will help you tailor to what and need to learn.
Tips for prospective students Look for tons of scholarships before you go. Read into the HPU's history--its soo worth it. Look into YouTube for their network to get a great feel for HPU.
In three sentences The academic counselors are very helpful. The program used to integrate new students into HPU is excellent. Obviously the campus is gorgeous.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I feel completely safe there. I always see at least two guards around the Downtown campus, and HPU has this text message system you can sign up for called RAVE alert. If there are any dangers, such as a fire, tsunami, etc, you are notified immediately. You can also see emails on your phone if there is trouble.
What to do for fun HPU sends out emails periodically that tell you about free or low-cost field trips you can take. They have a rec room for students to hang out at. The beach is nearby. They also have a talent show and Cultural booths, along with Movie Night twice a week.
Food and Dining I have not eaten at the cafeteria yet, but they have regional themed food often: Southern food, Northeastern food, etc. There's some nice fast food and cafe places nearby that you can eat at, and some give you a student discount.
Dorm Life I do not live in the dorms, but I hear they are pretty nice. I think they're getting remodeled in the near future.
Academic Rigor I have liked every professor so far that I have had there. As long as you do what is required of you and do it on time, you should have no problem getting A's. After every course is complete, you also have the opportunity to fill out a survey on your opinion of the course and instructor.
Tips for prospective students Take advantage of all the resources they offer you. Meet with your academic advisor often and ask questions. The staff is there to guide you to success. Get involved with the school community as well, either by joining one of their clubs or getting to know your classmates. They can help you prepare for quizzes and exams, and it's a great way to meet friends and have the extra support.
In three sentences Hawaii Pacific University is a great college to attend because it offers a wide variety of classes to take with excellent professors and a helpful staff. Everyone who works there is always friendly and has helped me with every problem I have. They also provide numerous resources to help students such as free tutoring in basic subjects, advisor meetings, and places for students to relax or study.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campuses are equipped with around the clock campus security.
Great for these types of students Hawaii Pacific University is for students who want a new experience in life: meeting a variety of people, enjoying a tropical climate, while getting an exceptional education.
Bang for the buck Hawaii Pacific University provides an outstanding academic experience in the context of an awesome location, where students can grow and learn from a diverse population while enjoying the beauty of this island.
What to do for fun Activities outside of the school experience are endless on Oahu. From surfing to tennis to swimming to a great variety of shopping, to meeting people from around the world, students will not be bored on this island.
Food and Dining Food and dining experiences are excellent and diverse in the Honolulu area, but can be pricey.
Dorm Life I am not living at a dorm with Hawaii Pacific University. However, the dorms are not located close-by the campus.
Academic Rigor Academics with Hawaii Pacific University have been rigorous, as far as difficulty and quantity of work, but, I feel, at an appropriate level.
Tips for prospective students For prospective students, I would give them advice to get active with their education in their new college. Give your college experience your best effort, and grow by meeting and getting to know new people in your life.
In three sentences I have received an excellent education at Hawaii Pacific University as an undergraduate in Health and Human Sciences. This college has given me a quality education with high caliber professors. I have grown, not only academically, but personally from attending HPU.

Categories Comments Food and Dining There are many choices for food, and the prices are pretty good. Lunch lines are busy, but it is worth the wait.
Dorm Life I did not live in the dorms, however I did hear good things about the dorms. There are security that always watch the campus, and they take the safety of the students very important!
Academic Rigor There are many different degree plans, and a different varieties of classes. These classes are challenging, and very useful! I found much of the lessons taught educational, and helpful for the simple lessons in life!
In three sentences I feel that Hawaii Pacific University is a wonderful school, that has several locations, making it easier to attend. I think there is a lot of diversity, and many educational opportunities! This is a great school, that I recommend one hundred percent!

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus has a very serious drug and alcohol policy so there's no way I would even think about messing with the rules as far as that. The dorms are also highly secure as there's not only individual keys for your dorm room but the hall itself has a door that will only open when flashed with an HPU ID card.
Clubs and Activities The only activities to do here kind of die off after the first month. The halls will have events like movie nights but that's about it and that's only like once a week at most sometimes. However, we did just go and see finding nemo in 3D for hall to hall competition so that was cool.
Great for these types of students This school is great for the quiet and studious students. Yeah, of course there's a beer or two in the mix but normally its very calm and relaxed.
Bang for the buck Once again you're in Hawaii. If you don't think you're getting your bang for the buck going here then you must be doing something terribly wrong.
What to do for fun You're in Hawaii, The beach is staring at you wherever you go just asking you to get in. If you're not into the beach, the campus halls individually have little functions to keep occupied on those night where there's seemingly nothing to do.
Food and Dining The food is good, its very good to be completely honest but the dining hall is so small it barely fits the amount of people it needs to. Otherwise there's nothing but positive feedback
Dorm Life The people are very nice and humble. The halls are very close to each other so you're always confronted with people even as you step out of the dorm. The suites are fairly large and I'm able to fit all of my stuff comfortably.
Academic Rigor Depending on what your majoring in and the classes you take, this university could be a breeze or very competitive. being in a Pre-med program, the university constantly seems to try and weed out the weakling through the hard classes. whereas on the other hand, my roommate is in comp. info systems and he feels like he knows most of the information given.
Tips for prospective students Get to know your professors! The classes are somewhat small so make them your best friends. Also, do not be afraid to ask for help, people are always willing to assist you if you look for them.
In three sentences On a 1-10 scale I would give this University a 7. The school is especially beautiful but I don't always get the college vibe or feel because the campus is so spread out. That really is the only complaint though. The campus is beautiful and the people are really nice.

Greek Life There is no greek life at Hawaii Pacific University
Great for these types of students It's great for the outgoing, adventurous types that are self starters. You really have to make yourself stay on top of your homework around here, many distractions. If you can do that, you'll do great here, and have the time of your life!
Bang for the buck There are shuttles that run to all places around the dorms, but it does get a little secluded on days when you just stay in your room. It's a great place to live with beautiful, wonderful sights to see!
What to do for fun There are so many things to do on the island of Oahu! You can go surfing, paddle boarding, hiking, mountain climbing, tanning, swimming, zip lining, skydiving, you name it, it's here. Plus it's so easy to go to the other islands once you are here! So many options!
Tips for prospective students Make sure you love being warm, and know that it rains more than you think it would here. It's beautiful all of the time, but make sure you are choosing this school for the right reasons, not just because it's Hawaii. Come into the new year with an open mind and a love for adventure!
In three sentences Relaxed place to do what you love to do. You will meet people from around the world, and make friends everywhere. It's like a college long vacation, with a little more work.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Great for Marine Bio and Nursing students for sure - a lot of students come here for those majors and in turn you do get your moneys' worth because you have the proper classes and attention from instructors.
Food and Dining At the downtown campus there are so many places to eat from all around the world! You can probably try any type of food you want.
Dorm Life The on campus dorms have relatively new furniture, and many of the people I have met are either freshmen or sophmores on campus. Not a lot of space and you might be able to do better price-wise staying off campus.
Tips for prospective students I think a good tip would be to make sure that your classes are appropriate for your major, and that you are definitely at the level you need to be so that you don't have issues completing your program.
In three sentences Definitely diverse, with plenty of activities and places to go outside school! Many options of majors but especially caters to science majors(such as Marine Biology) and nursing majors. There are two different campuses to fit your needs.

Categories Comments What to do for fun I go to the beach, because it is only a 5 minute walk from the housing. If you have friends with cars, driving around the island is always fun. If you are into clubbing, going to Zanzabar or Playbar are good clubs to go too.
Food and Dining There is no dining for the Ohia Student Housing, for we have our own kitchen. Food is very expensive here, so Wal-Mart will be the best place or grocery shopping.
Dorm Life I do not dorm with this college, but I do house with the Ohia Student Housing in Waikiki. For students in the future, try to get an apartment or if you do plan to stay at the Ohia Student Housing, sign up for the 6 month leasing contract.
Academic Rigor Depending on your major or what you are studying, this school is very well rounded and does help you with whatever you would like to study.
Tips for prospective students For this school, if you are focused only on your career and living very peacefully, this school will be perfect for you. There are a lot of international students, so making friends will be very tricky.
In three sentences Hawai'i Pacific University has allowed me to have a second chance at a college life. This school accepts anyone and gets involved with helping a student when they need academic help. I really appreciate this school, for this school has given me a second chance to start my future.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are always security guards, but there are many homeless people, especially at night. It's best not to stray alone at night.
Clubs and Activities There are tons of clubs and they all have fun activities. Also, the campus board holds dances, Saturday adventures, etc. There's always something to do.
What to do for fun There are many art galleries, theaters, bars, etc. close to campus. Also, Chinatown is right next door.
Food and Dining Most of the restaurants are to die for. There are plenty to choose from on Fort Street mall and a block away are also good food places. It's definitely worth your money. Don't get the Off Campus Meal Plan because it's expensive and you can't use it in all the places on campus.
Dorm Life I've talked to many students who dorm and also people who live on their own. I recommend living on your own. Dorms are expensive and the maintenance is poor. There are very few washing machines and dryers so that's inconvenient. The weather on the Hawaii Loa campus is depressing. Ohia is worse, but not because of the weather. It's dirty and the washing machines are broken.
Academic Rigor There are ups and downs. Sometimes it's hard and sometimes it's not. Definitely study for big exams. Asking your classmates for a study sessions is also a good idea. Final exams can be stressful so stay on top of your game and get lots of rest and eat a good breakfast.
Tips for prospective students Take advantage of the small classes. Get to know your teacher and don't be afraid to ask for help. Use the resources such as the tutoring center, computer labs, etc. because they are a big help and they keep you focused.
In three sentences The people here are really nice and helpful. You make friends VERY quickly and the teachers are friendly as well. This university also provides a lot of resources at your fingertips.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck I don't know firsthand if the experience is worth it, but I've decided to follow through with my choice and do my best to make it work. even if I were to completely fail and have to move back to the mainland, I believe it would be a worthwhile experience. If you want something you've never had, you've gotta do something you've never done! How many people can say they went to college in Hawaii anyways?? As long as you formulate a good plan and execute it, anything is possible.
What to do for fun I'm a surfer and adventurer, so I plan on doing that when I get time!
Academic Rigor I don't know first hand, but I've read a lot of reviews, and a lot of people love the classes because they're smaller and they offer a more hands on approach. To a student like me, I'm a hands on learner and really enjoy a classroom that allows me to express myself and begin to practice my trade in the real world.
Tips for prospective students Ask. Ask as much as you can about all the things you have questions about. HPU so far has been very helpful to me even though I'm 4000k miles away. Ask all the questions you can to help yourself in every way possible and get involved with actively trying to find people to connect with.
In three sentences Hawaii Pacific University is one of the most unique colleges I've ever encountered. It's an attractive college to a student like me because I believe that college is more than just good grades, but also about who you know and meet to find connections with for work and for life. Hawaii Pacific University offers this unique perspective by having a rich culture of student body.
