    Tips for prospective students

Everyone knows money is a big issue in times like these, so if you don't have the money to pay for it, or if you don't have a scholarship, this school is not worth the cost.

    Bang for the buck

It's VERY expensive, and if you dont have a scholarship of some sort, you'll be in loans up to your eye balls. They don't offer much money for students who do well.

    Am enjoying being here

It's a great campus, it's beautiful. It's close to New York City, and also close to the ocean. It has its ups and it's down, but overall it's a great place to go for school if thats what your looking for.

    Am learning a lot

First here at Hofstra I didn't learn much that I hadn't already learned. The teachers seemed to be teaching High School material, and it just didn't meet my standards.

Great for these types of students

Students that are actually willing to work hard should apply to Hofstra. Students that want to major in communications (journalism, TV, radio, etc...) should definitely apply.

    Tips for prospective students

Look for outside scholarships and grants to make up for what isn't covered in your financial aid package, and appeal to the financial aid office for an additional grant if necessary. Try to take a tour of the campus in the spring when the flowers and trees are in bloom - despite the dull, brick buildings, the greenery around the campus makes it look really nice.

    Bang for the buck

As a private university, Hofstra's tuition is a bit on the steep side. Scholarships and other financial aid are definitely necessary for those students who do not come from wealthy families, but you can always appeal for more money if they haven't given you a sufficient amount. Overall, considering that many of the professors have the top degrees in their field, and could very well be teaching at Harvard or some other Ivy League, Hofstra students are getting similar educations for a little bit cheaper.

    Am enjoying being here

The past semester has been rough on the University as a whole, but for the most part, Hofstra is a good place. While the school isn't located in the best area, its proximity to New York City (about an hour on the Long Island Rail Road), as well as the nearby malls and movie theaters gives students something to do if they don't want to be stuck on campus. There is almost always a party or some event going on at Hofstra USA for students who prefer to stay on campus, as well as the weekly (free) movies for the first 10 weeks of any semester.

    Am learning a lot

Some of the professors have a tendency to teach as if their students are still in high school. Most, however, actually do teach at a college level and are very knowledgeable in their particular field. The distribution courses may take away from credits you could be using toward your major for the first two or three semesters, but after that, the classes get a lot better. Professors have set office hours for students to come in and discuss any problems they may be having, and are willing to work with anyone who is making an effort to do well. Take advantage of these opportunities if you want to keep from falling behind or want to get ahead.

Great for these types of students

Students who want to step out of their comfort zone. Hofstra gives students many opportunities I would never have thought I'd ever be able to to! Students who like the thrill of the city but the comfort of the suburbs.

    Tips for prospective students

Join some sort of club or organization! Whether it be a sorority or club sport, most people who transfer do so because they aren't involved. Also, take advantage of everything they offer! Freshmen get many free trips to NYC and surrounding areas you just need to be aware.

    Bang for the buck

It is a very pricey school, but Long Island is an expensive place to live in general. There is actually a lot included in the tuition, you just need to find those free things. The only upsetting thing is that the food can be really expensive, but it is comparatively good food-all made it order.

    Am enjoying being here

Hofstra is a beautiful campus with so many perks! It's only 15 minutes from the beach and 30 minutes from NYC so there is always something to do. The size of the school is also perfect because its small enough that you see someone you know when walking to class but big enough that you'll always be meeting new people!

    Am learning a lot

There are a lot of wonderful professors and even if you aren't liking the professor teaching your class, there are plenty of other people willing to help. The small class sizes really force you to pay attention and learn. In a small class it's easy to notice who is paying attention and who is just surfing the internet. Also, the classes are more interesting because most of them are more of a discussion rather than a lecture which is very beneficial and keeps the class interesting!

    Bang for the buck

It's a lot of money to come here. I was lucky and basically with financial aid and scholarships- I will end up paying for only two years out of pocket. I came here with 12 credits from AP classes too, so I'm using those credits to help me minor in another subject instead of graduating a semester early. Definately work hard to get scholarships in and outside of Hofstra.

    Am enjoying being here

I have found so many great friends here at Hofstra. There are a lot of NY/CT/MA/NJ kids here, and yes the area is very affluent/Jewish/Italian (fits the Long Island stereotype to an extent) but you can interact with a lot of different groups. I know a lot of sports orientated people, theatre/music majors, frat/sorority kids, smart people, and partiers so its a great mix of personality. You definately don't have to limit yourself to just the type of kids you hung out with in high school, and a lot of my wealthier friends are pretty down to earth so that defeats the stereotype that Hofstra's full of snobs. It's great to live near NYC and the beaches as well- and the trains go everywhere on Long Island and NYC!

    Am learning a lot

Some of the classes I took here were ones I took in high school. I definately had a review for some of these subjects, but it was nice because it helped me build on harder concepts and made it easier to learn the new material in class.

Great for these types of students

This university is great for students who want to experience a diverse and active campus. Students who want a balance between school work and activities will definitely be able to find it here. Being so close to New York City, Hofstra often takes its students into the city for class trips so it is great for students who don't mind spending some time there or who want to use a top city in the United States not only as a place to learn but also as a place to go at leisure on weekends or days off.

    Tips for prospective students

Take advantage of everything offered on campus and make your time at Hofstra fun. You can learn so much even outside of the classroom because of the diverse culture and experience and have a great time while doing it. Challenge yourself and have fun with your school work. Hofstra has many interesting classes that can be taken to satisfy the full liberal arts education you get from coming here and you will definitely be able to find classes that fall right into your interests. Try to attend as many of your classes as possible because not only are you paying for these classes, but you will learn much more through most professors than you will through the textbook.

    Bang for the buck

Hofstra is a very expensive school costing around 48,000 dollars a year once all is said and done. There fortunately is a good amount of scholarship money to be found from the school and in individual departments. Everything is offered on campus and once here many things are free such as a brand new renovated gym with classes and a student movie theater, not to mention an extremely beautiful campus that has an arboretum and bird sanctuary. There is a wide variety of classes that offer a great education and a learning experience simply by living on campus and having all of the available opportunities offered through school and by the proximity to NYC. These things may make the price well worth it for the experience that can help a student grow academically and personally.

    Am enjoying being here

Like any new experience, adjusting to college can be challenging but Hofstra really helps out through all of the opportunities to keep busy. There is always something to do on campus which makes time enjoyable including clubs, sports, special events, and an active greek life. Everything from lectures to free movies recently out of theaters to open-mic nights keep campus is buzzing. Hempstead can be a rough area so it is great that they make all sorts of events on campus for students. There is a strong push for security and there are always officers on patrol and able to pick up any student if they feel uncomfortable. This is nice because it gives an extra safety factor while also giving students enough freedom to do things without interruption like go into New York City which is only an hour train ride away!

    Am learning a lot

Many of the professors here are fantastic. The professors’ attention and willingness to work with students one on one or simply talk more in depth after class is very high making learning easy. They are great tools and are extremely knowledgeable in their areas of study. Of course there are also some professors who can be a bore and therefore can make concentrating hard, but overall, it is a great school if you want a full yet thorough education.

    Tips for prospective students

If you choose My University you will be very happy and to be a sucess is all up to you!!!

    Bang for the buck

Hofstra is a Private University and it is very expensive. I am constanly looking for ways to pay for my education. You must stay on top of all your expenses and even though I could have gone to another University, Hofstra was my first choice and I will continue to strive to be the best.

    Am enjoying being here

I made a lot of friends and the Professors are very helpful. The campus life is exciting being away from home and on my own give me sense of self worth. The campus has a lot of foliage and springtime is really pretty. There is always something going on while living on campus. The food is always a plus and the diversity is refreshing.

    Am learning a lot

I am learning a lot in my courses that I am currently taking as a freshman. I feel comfortable with most of my classes.

    Campus Safety

Public Safety is very visible on campus. There are always a number of the Public Safety cars on patrol, along with the many walking patrols. Events always have an appropriate number of safety precautions taken. There are a number of emergency stations around campus, to which public safety quickly responds. The buildings (somewhat frustratingly at times) are air tight with their security. Even beyond campus for a few blocks, where many students live, is monitored by Public Safety. In the event that the police or firemen need to get involved the response time is exceedingly quick. I haven't heard of anyone feeling unsafe on school grounds.

    Greek Life

Greek Life at Hofstra is relatively small. That said socially Greek life is the center of the Hofstra community. If Greek life isn't of interest to a particular student they by no means become a social outcast, however a great deal of school functions and local community functions (especially the local bars) feature Greek life. Greek life at Hofstra is very inviting and in many ways shouldn't be compared to the Greek life at big SEC schools. Many students find that by going out for recruitment they open themselves to a better time at Hofstra.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a number of clubs and activities for students to participate in. Intramural sports are highly utilized and are a great way to keep active. In addition there are many athletic related clubs that keep people active. If sports aren't your thing there are seemingly hundreds of other clubs that cover all kinds of interests. The college radio and tv station are also huge hits if that sort of thing is of interest to you.

Great for these types of students

A self motivated, organized student is most likely to succeed. There are rarely reminders of what needs to be done so it is put on students to keep track of their responsibilities. Also to succeed socially at Hofstra some degree of social confidence is needed. The people at Hofstra are most often very nice, but do to the many tight clicks it is often intimidating to try and find friends. Starting a conversation is often the necessary catalyst, but starting that conversation to many people can be quite hard.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The whole campus is filled with an amazing array of rare plants. The whole campus is stunning but no where is quite as beautiful as the bird sanctuary. There is also a sensory garden, which is a great place to collect your thoughts or reflect.

    Bang for the buck

Hofstra is a school with a pretty good academic reputation. As a university it does a very good job of job placement, and preparing students for the workforce. That said the school is rather expensive. The cost of the school could be considered getting what you pay for but there are a number of schools that would be listed as better values.

    What to do for fun

Hofstra University offers a number of things to do on campus, such as movies, festivals, concerts, etc. However most students choose to spend (at least some) of their weekends off campus. The proximity to New York City opens up students to thousands of fun things to do. If not taking the train into the city students take advantage of the many local bars and clubs, go to the local beaches, or enjoy the nearby Roosevelt Field Mall. Hofstra's location makes it unique in what it offers for fun. My suggestion to new students is take all that the school has to offer (join a club, maybe Greek life) and supplement it with what Long Island and NYC have to offer.

    Food and Dining

Hofstra offers a large variety of choices for each meal. Between California Pizza Kitchen, Au Bon Pain, the Student Center Cafe, and Bits and Bytes, on any given day there is almost every type of food imaginable available to students. The food is always good, those who complain are the ones who don't take advantage of the variety of food offered. The only legitimate complaint about Hofstra's food is that it can often be expensive.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life at Hofstra is pretty good. Rooms are comfortably livable. Bathrooms are not elegant but are more than good enough to get the job done. The heating and cooling are very good (never was my room at an uncomfortable temperature). The RA's do a great job at being inviting and trying to create a sense of community, but are also accepting if you so choose not to be a part. Safety is impeccable in the dorms. Any issues in the dorms are quickly resolved. Overall the life in the dorms was great, except for the distance the dorms are from classes.

    Academic Rigor

There are many classes that are considered easy. That however doesn't mean that there will be many easy A's. The professors are generally fair and determine grades by mastery of the subject and effort put into the class. The effort applied to a class nearly always corresponds to the amount learned and the grade received.

    Tips for prospective students

For students considering Hofstra it is important that you evaluate how much certain things mean to you. Hofstra is not a small school though it is often viewed as one. There is no real sense of community, or school pride for that matter. The school is very clicky and the social scene is defined by the local bars. Academically Hofstra offers a great advantage in internship and job placement. Overall Hofstra has a pretty good academic reputation but for most students that isn't why they choose it.

    In three sentences

Hofstra is a great place to learn and grow as a person. It has outstanding facilities and faculty. If properly taken advantage of the school offers everyone all they need to succeed.

Great for these types of students

Though I am leaning towards Asian Studies myself, I see a lot of Drama and Creative Writing Majors. This school seems to be good for anyone interested in theater, especially since Hofstra is so close to the city. The campus is so diverse, and I think anyone would love it here! Being at Hofstra is a great experience for everyone as long as you have an open-mind and are willing to put yourself out there and try new things.

    Tips for prospective students

Definitely try to do the Discovery Program is you can! It is a week-long program made up of community service activities that lasts a week before the rest of the freshman come. You get to move in early, and you meet tons of people before classes even start. It was honestly one of the best times of my life and I would recommend it to anyone. I would also tell anyone who's applying here to join clubs that they are interested in. I am ina bout 5 clubs currently, and it is a great way to meet people, get involved, and have fun.

    Bang for the buck

I have definitely been getting my money's worth here. As a first-year student Hofstra offers many free trips into the city that are very easy to sign up for. I have seen about 5 Broadway shows at no cost. I am also in the Honors College, which offers many free trips and activities. These free trips added to the great food and class options has made my stay at Hofstra worthwhile where money is concerned.

    Am enjoying being here

I was so nervous when I first came here not knowing anyone and being so far from home. Everyone here was so nice, however, and I quickly made friends and became acclimated to the new situation. The Resident Assistants are here to hep you with anything you need, and teachers and counselors are always available to give advice too. The fitness center is wonderful and free to anyone who takes advantage of it. The food here is great (though it can sometimes be a little pricey), and there are many eateries to choose from. The campus has a great layout as a mixture of foliage, trees, and modern buildings.

    Am learning a lot

I currently entered as an undecided major, so I wasn't sure what classes I should take at first. However, my advisor helped me decide on some general distribution classes that I could take to take of of my basic requirements as a first-year student. These classes were all very informative, and I can honestly say I learned a lot more than I thought I would (especially as I have only been here for two months!).

Great for these types of students

Great for people that are very social. It's a school that is very diverse and has many different types of people. It is great for people that enjoy classes and branching out to learn things you might not usually think about. There are people from all over the country and the world, it is a great school for people that like meeting new people.

    Tips for prospective students

Get your application and paperwork in early. It will help you get it back faster. Visit the campus to make sure you like it, which you most likely will. Talk to people that have went there and maybe even talk to a professor or two if you visit.

    Bang for the buck

While it is expensive, you get a lot for what you pay for. The school has free laundry service, a fall festival with impressive music acts, and you get into all of the sporting events and plays for free. In the dorms, you also get free wi-fi and free cable. There are many events that could easily cost money, but the university covers. There are free trips to the city as well. Trips to museums and events in New York City are exciting and fun.

    Am enjoying being here

The school is good for academics, but has a ton of opportunities for fun as well. Plenty of Division 1 sporting events to attend through out the year and there are also plays and musicals all the time. There are clubs and many events put on for freshmen to help them get through their first year.

    Am learning a lot

The professors I have had so far are very informative. They give great lectures. There are notes you need to take but it is pretty simple. The grading system is pretty fair and if you participate and show the professor that you are trying, it will help. Each class I have taken has helped me not only academically, but has also taught me how to be a better person.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are awesome. The RA's are always helpful. The rooms are clean and most of them have been redone over the past year.

    Academic Rigor

It is comparable to my high school classes...I cannot decide if that says little about Hofstra's academics or a lot about my high school's academics.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you are financially equipped to attend this school, because it is pricey. However, it is worth it!

    In three sentences

Hofstra is a great college, with an at home feel that will increase your chance of success. The campus is clean, the professors helpful, and the food is good! There is no other college I would have rather attended.

    What to do for fun

The most fun happens at events. Event schedules get emailed to students. For relaxation, there is a gym where students go to break a sweat and relieve stress. There is a museum on campus where students learn about different art. The library and computer lab is open to students looking for somewhere to study quietly. Additionally, there is student employment for the students looking to work.

    Food and Dining

There are multiple places to eat on Hofstra's campus and many choices of food to choose from. However, if students get tired of the food on campus, there are some restaurants nearby.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life is good. Students can do whatever they please, just as long as the University's regulations are being followed. Meaning, they may bring friends and/or family to visit or even spend the night, but knowing their responsibilities are to be responsible for their company's actions. As far as the use of substances, that is prohibited. As far as security goes, every few weeks, if not purposely set off by the students, there will be mandatory fire drills. In each building, there are Resident Safety Representatives making sure that they regulate and be aware of who enters and exits the residential halls. Also, there are Public Safety Officers who keeps the students on campus secure. There are a few dorms that have coed floors and others that have only one sex on each floor. There is one Resident Assistant located on the halls of each building. The students can go to them for any problems that they have in the dorms or on the floors. Students have housing options to choose from. For instance, students who would love to live with a group of people, they will consider living in the suites which would be in a complex building. Those who would rather live with fewer people would consider a quadruple, which would also be in a complex building or in a tower. The towers also provide doubles and singles for the students who would rather live either with a roommate or by themselves. Within each of the dorms, there is a laundry room. Also, on there is a kitchen where food can be heated and made. Nearby the kitchens, there is a lounge where the students can relax and watch television. All in all, it is definitely an experience where students get a sense of independence, peace, and comfort.

    Academic Rigor

There may be some professors who will be lenient when grading, but in order to receive leniency from the professors, a struggle of hard work and focus have to be put forth. There are some courses, depending on the majors, where there will be difficulty, but to resolve that problem, there are office hours when students can meet with the professors, one-on-one, and discuss the problems they have in their courses. Also, the University provides free tutoring in the courses where the students need help. There are very few exceptions for handing in assignments late. For example, if a student is absent for a class, the professors might let it pass if they are presented a note from an appointment or an e-mail from the student, basically explaining his/her sickness. However, that doesn't mean the assignment will be extended until that student returns. Overall, they expect students to be on top of their work just as well as professors should be on top of their teaching.

    Tips for prospective students

The fist tip for those who are thinking about attending Hofstra University is take your education seriously! If you come in expecting everything to come easy, it will be gone as easy as you thought when it arrives. Second tip, be yourself! Taking the time to know who you are and what you are interested in, more than putting focus on others may give you guidance toward your well planed goals. However, lastly, get involved! Sometimes a risk can benefit or hurt, but taking a risk and getting in or being denied is better than not putting any effort in and still not being a part of anything! A quote by me, Effort is just about all it takes to put in, and what you get out, turns to be just what you make KRP.

    In three sentences

Hofstra University is a place where you can find yourself, be yourself, and express who you are. It allows students to interact and network with others within and outside of the University to improve social, networking, and individual abilities. The University opens each student's minds to strengthen their abilities and turn them into skills.

Great for these types of students

the school is great for anyone that doesn't need or want any free time to themselves.

    Bang for the buck

i think the college is overpriced. they are always looking for the parents to donate money to one event or another. the family functions that they hold are expensive and not worth the cost. your family can visit without the event and have a better time.

    What to do for fun

they have plenty to do on campus and off campus. hang out in the lounge, student center, outdoors. see a show or sporting event. go shopping.

    Food and Dining

the food is ok. there are many choices to please different cultures and tastes. the healthy food is expensive.

    Campus Safety

i feel very safe on the hofstra campus. there are many police officers that monitor the area and also emergency buttons throughout the campus grounds.

    Clubs and Activities

there are many clubs and activities at hofstra. besides having a division one athletic program, there are club sports on campus. there are many different clubs of all different types available which are a great way to meet new people.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

during welcome week there is a hofstra dance that all new students are taught. this dance is never used any other time though.

    What to do for fun

there are various campus activities set up on campus, but there is also many trips to the city and also a giant mall down the block. every weekend the school plays free recent movies in one of the theaters.

    Food and Dining

the food on campus is pretty good. there is a red mango, au bon pain, starbucks, california pizza kitchen, subway, salad bars, burger places, italian place, sushi place, burrito place, smoothie, sandwich and wrap place. the food seems to be a lot better here than at other colleges. it not as good as a home cooked meal, but the food is defiantly not bad to eat.

    Dorm Life

living at hofstra offers a nice, growing experience. there are always things going on campus on the weekends for resident students to partake in. the dorms themselves are average dorms, a good size room. a plus is that you get to control your own temperature in your room. in the warmer weather a lot of students are outside in the grass by the dorms reading, exercising or enjoying the fresh air.

    Academic Rigor

the work level is a normal college work level. hofstra has many ways to help students gain good grades to pursue their career. many internships available for all different majors. hofstra has free tutoring for all subjects and all students. there is also a writing center on campus that is open to help with papers and writing of all types. the library is open for students to use and computer labs as well. there are special quiet floors in the library for students to get that peace and quiet they need.

    Tips for prospective students

it's a lot of money to go here, but is worth every penny. there are so many good opportunities.

    In three sentences

hofstra university is a small comfy college experience. it is also a big enough place to be able to keep your space and make friends with whom you choose, but small enough that you can get adjusted fasted and find your way around easily in no time. the campus is beautiful.

    Campus Safety

The Public Safety officers are really nice and extremely helpful whenever you need them whether you need help getting a package to or from the post office and then to your dorm or your sick and you need to go to the hospital if your sick. The officers are always in a good mood and they are also really fun to talk to especially if you have to do something like go to the hospital when your sick. Also if you get in to the local train station late or you end up in an area around the campus that you don't feel safe you can always call Public Safety to come pick you up and take you back to campus.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a million different clubs on campus from SGA (Student Government Association) to religious clubs to clubs based on the interests of students. The greatest part about the clubs? If there isn't something your interested in you are more than welcome to start the club, which is absolutely amazing.

Great for these types of students

As far as I know pretty much anyone can find their own little niche in this college and its awesome because there truly is something for everyone here.

    Bang for the buck

As much as I love Hofstra it is a bit on the pricey side so be aware of this when you apply and know how you are going to pay before you get here.

    What to do for fun

There is always a movie to watch in the Student Center Theater every weekend and throughout each semester there are campus wide events whether its the nation wide Humans versus Zombies game or a campus promoted event like a singer or other famous figure or a fun fair.

    Food and Dining

The food is very good and sometimes there are those one or two dishes served that just remind you of home. There is a lot of variety on campus from American cuisine to Mexican (Chipotle style) to Japanese food. There are also multiple places to eat on campus all over both the residential and academic sides of campus.

    Dorm Life

The Resident Assistant's (RA's) and the entire staff at each building are extremely helpful with students in trying to solve any issues that could come up but also in creating programs for their residents to participate and enjoy. Everything from scavenger hunts to informative sessions on popular topics can happen in each dorm building and the dorms are well kept and easy to move in to and make your own however you would like. Also a lot of dorms have kitchens for the students to use that consist of a stove, microwave and a sink to clean your dishes. Dorms are on the North side of campus or residential side and the classes are on the south side which is nice because during the day it is relatively quiet and easy to get work done.

    Academic Rigor

The higher level the classes that you take are the harder they are but they gradually get harder it's not just that one level is really easy and the next level is close to impossible its a gradual build as you learn more and more information in each class.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be afraid to ask questions of the financial aid department about loans, scholarships and other types of aid they can provide you. Also talk to teachers in the departments with which you are thinking of pursuing a degree in to get a feel for the classes and what the majors and minors you are thinking of would be like here.

    In three sentences

Hofstra University is a beautiful college campus and it is listed as an arboretum in New York due to the many trees all over campus and not only that but also the many flowers that blow all over during their respective blooming seasons. Teachers are all extremely helpful as long as you seek them out for help and many are more than knowledgeable about their respective classes. The more proactive you are about what you want out of the university (classes, financial aid, etc.) the more you are likely to receive or get help in finding better alternatives.

Great for these types of students

The students that I have seen walking around campus all look studious, they were all walking to class or the library and no one looked not too good from the night before. When i walked around campus I felt like the students all had class or respect for themselves and didn't look like slobs. They still liked to go out and have a life though with NYC so close how could you resist?

    Bang for the buck

Hofstra is crazy expensive! But after you get accepted it has a page telling you how much scholarship you got and it helps ALOT! The price is still very high but I think it is worth it because of the amount of opportunities you will get once you graduate there. I have been hearing a lot now that if you go to a college that isn't that hard that's good but you are not going to get the same job or internship opportunities.

    What to do for fun

I am planning on playing club soccer, I wanted to still be able to play but not be overwhelmed with soccer being the only thing I did. The city of course is a short train ride away and from the students I have talked to a big thing is to go for the day walk around go out to lunch or maybe go to a museum the choices are all there for you.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria here is beautiful! I have eaten on campus 2 of the times I have gone to visit and it is good food. The choices are endless and never will you get bored with eating the same thing. There is also a little grocery store on campus if you want a snack and Starbucks other little food places any where you go.

    Dorm Life

The freshman dorm rooms at New Complex are quite big compared with others I have seen. The rooms are set up in suite style and you have 2 bedrooms with 2 students in each a little living room and your own bathroom. The bathroom was the main thing for me I didn't want to have to walk all the way down the hall in my pajamas just to brush my teeth and having a little living room is nice if you want to hangout while you or your roommates are studying.

    Academic Rigor

Hofstra is a very academic school, its not going to be a walk in the park but as long as you set aside enough time for school you can still have a life. I am planning on attending the business school and only hear wonderful things about it especially that almost all of the students get hired right after they graduate.

    Tips for prospective students

When you go look at colleges make sure you can picture yourself there walking around campus with your friends, sitting in the cafeteria enjoying lunch between classes, and the students that attend there are people you want to expose yourself to.

    In three sentences

Hofstra has so many different great things to offer. The school is located so close to NYC and is perfect for wonderful internships. The business school here is exceptional and I am so excited to attend in the fall.

Great for these types of students

Hofstra University is definitely great for people who want to be close to the city, but not in it. My friends and I take trips to Manhattan all the time and the school provides transportation to and from the train station.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Every semester just before finals start, there's a free midnight breakfast. It's a great way to get people to take a break from studying, get some free food, and relax a little with friends one last time before taking finals.

    What to do for fun

It isn't hard to find things to do both on and off campus throughout the week and on weekends. Although directly outside the campus is not the best area of Long Island, New York City is a short train ride away and the Roosevelt Field Mall is about 10 minutes by car. Also, there are often events taking place right on campus at Hofstra USA, which serves food and offers free access to TVs, pool tables, and even some arcade games. The school also shows a free movie every weekend in the student center theater for students who prefer to stay on campus.

    Food and Dining

The food here is surprisingly good, but pretty expensive. For dining, we can sign on for a meal plan and add more money whenever it's needed. There is a great variety of food offered and plenty of places to eat on campus, including a convenience store with a deli section which is open 24/7.

    Dorm Life

I have only lived in a high-rise so far, but I really did enjoy it. I've heard that the suites in Stuyvesant and Nassau/Suffolk are really nice, but I chose to stay in the high-rise anyway. The rooms are fairly spacious for doubles and singles, and the bathrooms are cleaned daily.

    Academic Rigor

Although I have only experienced two semesters here so far, I have been very happy with the quality of professors I have had. They are always more that willing to meet with you outside of class during their set office hours to discuss any problems you may be facing in the class. The courses tend to be more rewarding due to the smaller class sizes and it is easier to develop a good relationship with both the professor and the other students. Overall, the professors I have had so far were all extremely knowledgeable in their field of study.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be afraid to be yourself here because people are very accepting of others. Try to be involved around campus or in different clubs. There's a huge variety of clubs offered ranging from a quidditch team, to accapella singing groups, and there are numerous fraternities and sororities to choose from if you are interested in becoming a part of one.

    In three sentences

Going back after winter break for my second semester of college, I knew I had made the right choice with Hofstra University. The people are diverse, but very accepting and there's a feeling of community there. On top of that, the campus is absolutely beautiful come the spring and summer.

    Clubs and Activities

It's easy to get into clubs here the school is big on sports and getting students involved in activities. Also the school is big on politics and advertising so they have plenty of activities to get you involved in these including the presidential debates which will be held here during the 2012 year.

Great for these types of students

Athletic students and student who really want to customize what they do. Like I mentioned earlier you can really make your education and social life here into anything you want it to be. Also political students will like it here this school has a lot of activities in politics.

    Bang for the buck

This is probably the biggest down part of the school. Its pricey but they help out if you have the grades. But its small class sizes and good teachers so it about equals out.

    What to do for fun

The school is big into sports so it's a easy to be active there. Also it is close to a beach and New York City. Also the school makes using the subway a big part of going there so you can find something to do if you have a car or willing to use public transportation.

    Food and Dining

The food options are very diverse on campus and there is a very nice coffee shop that the school runs. Also the school is about thirty minutes from New York City and twenty minutes from the beach so you can find any food you want around the area.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are huge. What is one room at most colleges is your room, a lounge, a bathroom, and like two other rooms. Also in each building is a large lounge area with couches TVs and multiple games to play.

    Academic Rigor

This school is very customizable. You can just take basic classes that will be as challenging as normal college classes. You can join customized seminars and clusters that specialize in whatever field you plan on going into. Also there are honors colleges which are specialized classes that you must be invited to and are very challenging. Like I said you can really customize your education here.

    Tips for prospective students

When you come to visit don't be afraid to ask the other students what they think I only met one person with some complaints and the rest were all happy to be there and enjoyed the school.

    In three sentences

The campus is absolutely beautiful to say the least. I visited for three days and in those three days the campus looked amazing no matter what the weather, the people were friendly, and the tours were very helpful. I can only imagine how amazing it is going to be to attend this college.

    Campus Safety

I don't always feel safe late at night walking around campus, but if I have a buddy I feel safe, and they even have an escort service where you can get walked to your dorm at night. Campus safety can be a downer when you are having a good time *wink wink*, but overall they are ok.

    Clubs and Activities

Any club you can imagine is here, and if it's not it is really easy to make one of your own and even get funding for it.

Great for these types of students

Everyone. Stupid girls, LAX bros, smart people, rich people, poor people, antisocial people. There is a place for everyone.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I won't share my secret place, but I'm sure you can find one of your own (:

    Bang for the buck

Very expensive, but it is easy to get what you pay for. There are so many free services that aren't offered at other schools. The financial aid is pretty good too.

    What to do for fun

Go to the city! NYC is a short shuttle and train ride away.

    Food and Dining

Sooooo many choices. Although you can run out of money, if you keep it on track you can eat like a king. There is a 24 hour convenience store that you can use your meal plan at and many places with great hours. Au Bon Pain, subway, a sushi place, kosher kitchen, organic grill, the list goes on and on!

    Dorm Life

There is always something to do on campus, and the residential halls are great. The rooms are spacious and there is a dorming option that can satisfy anyone's needs.

    Academic Rigor

Obviously there are easy classes here, just as there are in any school. However, challenging yourself is not difficult. Honors options are available for those in honor college that give a pleasant challenge!

    Tips for prospective students

Do well on your SATs! Much of the scholarship money is based on this.

    In three sentences

Hofstra is a great school. You can make yourself into someone here. The opportunities are unlimited.

    Greek Life

Greek Life isn't extremely big on campus, but it does exist. There are no on campus fraternity or sorority houses, which helps.

    Clubs and Activities

There's so many to choose from that I can't even think of which ones to talk about! And if you can find something you want to be a part of, it's easy to start up a club yourself.

Great for these types of students

Hard working students that love getting involved shine at Hofstra University!

    Bang for the buck

Here's the thing: Hofstra is really really pricey. To be honest with you, your major and how involved you are is going to determine whether the tuition price is worth it. As a Drama major, I feel as if my professors are some of the best I can get and have taught me so much in my first two semesters. I'm also involved in a lot of activities on campus. If you're just going to sit in your dorm all day and major in something really common, you're better off just going to a public state college.

    What to do for fun

Although there's not a lot to do on the weekdays, Hofstra fills the weekends with something to do. There's always a film that's not on DVD yet playing in the Student Center on the weekends, and there's a midnight movie on saturday night/early sunday which is usually a bit nostalgic. Sometimes Hofstra will offer an Explore Next Door trip that's free, but you have to book those really quickly. If you can't find anything to do, there's always the weekend shuttle, which stops at the mall (as well as Target, Stop & Shop, and Wal Mart), as well as the Mineola and Hempstead train stations for those who want to go into the city.

    Food and Dining

Most people who complain about Hofstra's food are the kids who eat the same exact thing every day. There are so many eateries to choose from, and the best part is that you can use your meal plan for any food place on campus. There's a Red Mango, two grilling places, a Kosher Deli, and even a Sushi Bar! The best part is Dutch Treats, which is a convenience store that's open 24/7. They can get a little pricey, but that pint of Ben and Jerry's at 2am is worth it!

    Dorm Life

If you're a freshman, DORM AT THE NETHERLANDS! Although you may think it's a bit of a walk to classes, the facilities are great! You'll only share a bathroom with three other people, and you'll even have a common area in your dorm. The best part is that it's all Freshmen! Although you'll have the stereotypical common bathroom and smaller living space in the towers, you're still extremely close to either the student center or Dutch Treats, which is open 24/7. The common areas are also spacious and have nice televisions!

    Academic Rigor

Some classes can be really easy to pass as long as you do the work, but there are others that require a lot of studying in order to pass. Luckily, the library is almost always open, and there's a large computer lab across the hall!

    Tips for prospective students

Take advantage of the programs that are available on campus! There's a bunch of clubs that you can join as well as club sports and exercise classes. There's even a Quidditch team for your inner nerd!

    In three sentences

Hofstra is definitely a good school for someone who wants to choose from a large variety of majors, and prefers to have a campus like experience, but would still like to visit a large city from time to time.

    Campus Safety

You need your ID to enter all the residential buildings and to get onto campus after dark. Secure and safe, not much to complain about.

    Clubs and Activities

I plan to play on the womens club tennis team. Ive played tennis for the past 7 years and I would love to play for the school team but I dont feel like I have D1 tennis abilities. D3, yes. But not D1.

Great for these types of students

Great for ALL types of students. There is such a variety in the types of people who attend hofstra. You can be into heavy metal music or Justin Bieber and you will find a group of friends to mesh with. You can be a jock or be in the chess club and you'll find a group of friends. There is no way you can be so different that you wont fit in, there's such a great variety.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Not that I know of yet anyways.

    Bang for the buck

I'm paying for hofstra by myself and I don't qualify for financial aid. The experience is worth it though i believe. I'll probably take my debt to the grave with me but the experiences Ive had at hofstra as a visitor have been amazing thus far and i can only imagine how much better it will be when i add the classroom experience on top of all the things i already love about the school.

    What to do for fun

The city is a short train ride away. The beach is couple minutes down the road and all the bars are walking distance from campus. On campus, there are always sporting events going on and the RA's have programs every week to keep residents busy. Its a lot of fun!

    Food and Dining

AMAZING! in all the times I've visited I've never complained about having to get food in the dinning hall. The food variety is great; a taste for every palate!

    Dorm Life

The dorms in the towers are singles so they are relatively small. One wall is an entire window displaying a view of the city if you're on a top floor. The single allows you to have your own space and make it your own.

    Academic Rigor

Hofstra is ranked high in its academic achievements. It is well known and well respected. Anyone should be proud to say they are a graduate of Hofstra.

    Tips for prospective students

Seeing as I am transferring in I don't know as much as a current student, however I have visited friends several times and I would say - make sure your brought comfortable shoes. There is so much to do and so much to see. Aside from the school itself, it is only a few blocks away from all the action in Hempstead.

    In three sentences

Hofstra is a beautiful school and the campus has this vintage/at home/comforting feeling about it. Walking around from class room building to class room building you wouldn't know there is a major 4 lane road only a few acres away. I feel really comfortable here which is important because home is 3 hours away.

    Campus Safety

Public safety makes the campus feel secure. Campus guards rotate on campus checking the dorms 24/7 making sure nothing is disturbed. You are able to call them at any time of day or night and ask for assistance if you feel uncomfortable in any given situation you may be in.

    Greek Life

Greek life is very friendly. They participate in not only making lifetime friendships but providing connections for job opportunities, internships, and making the community a better place for those that live in it.

    Clubs and Activities

The school has a wide variety of intramural sports and clubs. The people in charge are really down to earth and many give first year students opportunities to gain leadership experience. There is virtually a club for almost anyone.

Great for these types of students

Hofstra University is great for people who want the close knit type of classroom environment, but who are also interested in meeting a variety of people and being a part of the masses. You can be anyone here. There is so much diversity here.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Hofstra Orientation Leaders traditionally teach first year students the Hofstra dance that is quite pecular. There are youtube videos from almost every year, showing how the dance works.

    What to do for fun

There is so much to do here. You have the weekend parties. There are student selected trips into New York City to Broadway shows, Opera shows, museums, and trips to Central Park. There is even a sweets story completely dedicated to all things peanut butter related in the city.

    Food and Dining

Food is amazing. Meal plans are well planned out. They give you the best options and variety for food. CPK which is short for California Pizza Kitchen is usually open until 2:30 am. If you have midnight munchies, its the best place to go.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is amazing. You meet all kinds of people from all over the world. The best part is that you get to interact and work together as a house. The residential assistance provide fun, bonding activities that people in your buildings participate in to get better acquainted with. You become family by the end of the year.

    Academic Rigor

Hofstra University provides enough challenge to make sure there students have provoking thoughts, but are still able to get involved in clubs, and participate and social events and life outside of school.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure that you get on your college application. Papers should be well developed and organized. Try to make yourself different, because every prospective student is an individual. Also, make sure you have gear for rain, snow, cold weather, and humidity. You're going to need it.

    In three sentences

Hofstra University is big. Hofstra University is small. Hofstra University is Home.

    Campus Safety

The campus is safe or else I would not be here. With over-protective parents, they wanted to make sure there is always security. You can call public safety at anytime and they will be there within two minutes. The campus is huge but is gated and always patrolled. There are emergency phones and lights at various locations and the security will walk/drive with you if you ever feel unsafe, but I doubt you will because I have an evening class when it's dark outside but I feel totally safe walking across campus to my dorm at night.

    Greek Life

Hofstra is big on Greek Life.

    Clubs and Activities

You can be part of any club or any activity you can imagine. There are hundreds, and if we don't have it you can start it.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Hofstra has many of it's own traditions. There is a Hofstra dance that everyone learns during orientation. It is pretty fun.

    Bang for the buck

Personally, I am having trouble paying for the school. That is why I am doing these scholarships. The education however is great and education in itself is an investment so I definitely think its worth it. If you don't get a great financial aid package however there are schools with the same standard of education but less, SUNY's for example.

    What to do for fun

There are tons of clubs in the school and at night there are parties all the time. There is a mall 15 minutes away. If you live on campus the dorms are pretty united and social so there are always people hanging out in the lounges.

    Food and Dining

The food is great. They have everything from a Build Your Own Burger, to salad bars, to Eli's Kosher Kitchen. The required meal plan for freshman, although it may seem expensive, is actually enough to eat daily, especially if you live on campus.

    Dorm Life

If you're a party person, there are tons of parties. If you're a study person, there is a enormous library filled with thousands upon thousands of books. There are many clubs and a great variety of food on campus and around campus. However, living here is expensive, especially freshman housing but you can opt out of freshman housing.

    Academic Rigor

The academic rigor depends on the courses you take. Personally, I try to take as many as I can handle. Consider the fact that when you over 17 credits you have to start paying extra per credit. Those are expensive.

    Tips for prospective students

Be up to date with your financial packages. Always stay in contact with the advisors because they are there to help you. You have to take initiative and ask questions, nobody is going to be telling you what to do so you have to figure it out yourself.

    In three sentences

Hofstra University is definitely a great school. The teachers are knowledgeable and credible. They have tons of resources for anybody who is willing to make use of them. Even though it is an expensive school, they are great with financial aid. All the money we pay however is used for these great resources and opportunities provided by the school. Education is an investment.

    What to do for fun

There is legitimately always something to do on campus, always some type of event. There is also the Roosevelt Field Mall which the university shuttle runs to on the weekend and we're a train ride away from the city!

    Food and Dining

There is a variety of choices dining wise on both sides of campus where any and everyone can find something they like, some of which are open pretty late for when you need that late night study snack. There are also several off campus choices not too far.

    Dorm Life

There are different choices for different people, you can choose to be in a tower or living in a suite and of course you can decide how many people you wanna share your space with if any. All of the residence facilities are well made and my experience this year living on campus has been a very good one, no complaints up to this point.

    Academic Rigor

This is definitely a school that has a good reputation when it comes to their student's academics and you need to come in ready to help upkeep that reputation. However, with very helpful and understanding teachers, advisors and staff, this is extremely possible.

    Tips for prospective students

Really try and get outside scholarships and what not. Hofstra is an expensive school and they do give some aid but it's not necessarily a lot. Also, this school is great for anyone interested in Communications.

    In three sentences

Hofstra is an absolutely amazing school. It is undeniable that it is a little bit on the expensive side but it is worth every single penny. The academics are top notch and there's always something happening on campus.

    What to do for fun

Hofstra always has exciting events going on. They have many concerts and in the past have had guests such as Jimmy Fallon. There are also a great number of clubs that are always eagerly awaiting new members to join. The city is also a short ride away and Hofstra offers tickets to certain events and exhibits for a discounted price.

    Food and Dining

Hofstra University has many dining options such as Au Bon Pain and California Pizza kitchen. There are also many coffee options including two Starbucks.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are slightly larger than most college dorms and are facilitated with air conditioning. You also have the option to opt for a suite so that you have a private bathroom shared by you and three other students instead of a community bathroom.

    Academic Rigor

Hofstra expects the best from their students, but of douse is always willing to lend a hand if needed.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply early to receive the best scholarships. Also make sure to personalize your college essay, because they do read them, and if you're lucky, will even receive a response to your essay in your acceptance letter.

    In three sentences

Hofstra has a beautiful green campus and many advanced facilities. The faculty is dedicated to the students and deeply cares about their interests and needs. The campus is a short train ride from New York city, a huge center for careers.

    Campus Safety

Since Hempstead is not the best of areas, the campus security is phenomenal. Identification is needed to scan into halls that aren't your own residence hall, and after 9 pm, the residential side of campus is closed-gate. You can get anywhere you want/need to on campus, but no unchecked/ unidentified visitors can get past security stations. With that said, I don't feel as though the campus security overreaches, or makes it unbearable to live on campus. It's easy to check in visitors, and if you're ever off campus and you need a ride back to campus, the officers gladly pick you up and drop you off at your dorm with no questions asked.

    What to do for fun

Roosevelt Mall is the 6th largest in the United States, and only a 10-minute drive. Even better is New York City, which takes about 30-45 minutes by train, so you have access to concert venues, night clubs, and anything your heart desires! And if you don't want to go far, there are constant entertainment choices on campus everyday, and especially good options on the weekend. For example, there are movie nights where they stream the newest movies on a jumbo inflatable screen, or school wide blacklight dance parties.

    Food and Dining

I can't give an accurate read on the food choices, since I have a restrictive diet, but if you like anything from fried chicken, to tofu with lo mein, to custom veggie/hamburgers, then Hofstra's got it. There are also nice places within the academic side of campus, such as au bon pain, Cafe on the Quad, and Bits and Bites- where you can find froyo, made-to-order pizza, and a gourmet salad station.

    Dorm Life

There are several types of housing here: suites, singles, doubles, etc. Over all, the dorms are nice, and they're easy to settle into. Even being in one of the high rises with shared bathrooms isn't bad because only 4 people per floor share the area.

    Academic Rigor

Hofstra is an up and coming school. New polls are placing it high on the list of best acting schools. Not to mention, the science professors here are all the highest in their fields, so they're extremely knowledgeable. The music department is amazing too; I take clarinet lessons from the former principal clarinetist of the NY Philharmonic. How many schools can boast that?!

    Tips for prospective students

Ask questions about the campus, and explore the surrounding area. You'll be here for the next four years, so it's a good idea to get a feel for your prospective home.

    In three sentences

The campus is very diverse! There are so many clubs and organizations that it makes it hard not to want to join almost all of them. Plus, being a 30 minute train ride from New York City definitely adds appeal.

    Campus Safety

Public Safety is always visible and very committed to making sure students are safe on and around campus.

    Greek Life

Greek life is small but successful. There are no official sorority or fraternity houses, but many members choose to live together off campus.

    Clubs and Activities

There is a club for every interest! From academics to sports to recreation, there are hundreds of groups waiting to be joined.

    What to do for fun

New York City is a short train ride away, so many students take advantage of that. Roosevelt Field Mall is minutes away, and is the second-largest shopping mall in the state of NY. For those who like bars and clubs, there are a few bars across the turnpike that offer dancing and trivia nights for the 19+ crowd. Hofstra organizations are always holding events on campus, like the Vibe Live Music Fest in fall or Music Fest in May.

    Food and Dining

Hofstra is catered by Lackmann Food Services, and while they do an excellent job of offering many creative and varying dining experiences, college food is still college food. One huge plus of going to Hofstra is the fact that there is an Au Bon Pain and many Starbucks locations on campus, all of which are on your meal plan. Eating healthy is easy to do, but all the sweets can be tempting! Something that puts Hofstra apart from other universities is that there is always a place to get food open, with a convince store open 24 hours and other locations staying open until 2AM every day. You can never really go hungry here.

    Dorm Life

Life at Hofstra is very active and full of excitement, so much so that many would-be commuters choose to live on campus to take advantage of the wide array of things to do. The choice of dorm styles varies, from singles or doubles in high rise towers to suites with lounges and everything in between. Resident Assistants work hard to make you feel comfortable in your dorm, and are very accessible for any issues or concerns you may run into.

    Academic Rigor

Academic rigor changes depending on the professor and class you take, but a strong work ethic is a great advantage to be had while attending. If you don't have one at first, it will be developed by the time you graduate! The library is a wonderful place to get some studying done and a place every student should frequent. Professors are usually strict but understanding when it comes to getting work done.

    Tips for prospective students

Be adventurous, there are so many opportunities to be had here as long as you reach out. Take advantage of all the free workshops and seminars that are offered, they will lead to many new pathways. Don't miss out on utilizing the close proximity to Manhattan, it's just a train ride away and provides endless things to do on the weekend. Be social with your professors and academic adviser, they will lead you to success. Never be afraid to ask for help.

    In three sentences

Hofstra is situated on a beautiful campus but not in the best area of Long Island. The professors are outstanding and genuinely care about their students, but the university as a whole seems to be mismanaged at times. There is always something to do and something to see on and around campus.

    What to do for fun

There are many clubs, sororities and fraternities in the university to join. Also, some clubs, like the Entertainment Unlimited, have good opportunities to take students to museums, Broadway shows, ice skating and theaters in New York city.

    Food and Dining

The food diversity is very good, nevertheless the food is pretty expensive. We have Au Bon Pan, Starbucks, Sbarro, Subway and other food restaurants. We use our ID cards with a certain amount of money on it for food.

    Dorm Life

To be honest, there are multiple choices of dorms. You can be in towers or houses and you can choose to get a single room, double room or more. Some houses have a nice lounge with bathrooms for 4 people and pretty comfortable. The dorms are organized and cleaned.

    Academic Rigor

It depends on what is your major and also which courses you're taking. Most of the professors are strict and demand from you hard work.Although for freshman, you need to have a high high school GPA and high SAT scores to get a academic scholarship.

    Tips for prospective students

Work as hard as you can to get a very high GPA and join Honors College. They would value you a lot and you would have a lot of prestige.

public safety is everywhere on campus. they patrol buildings and floors all day everyday. they also respond within seconds when a blue emergency button is pressed. wandering off campus can be unsafe, its best to go in groups.

    Greek Life

greek life is very evident on campus. many people are involved in it but there is no pressure to be involved.

    Clubs and Activities

Great for these types of students

students who want diversity and open minds and want to be close to the city without being in the city.

    Bang for the buck

it is very expensive, the majority of people are on scholarship. it is worth it, you get what you pay for with the academics.

    What to do for fun

there's plenty of campus activities and free movies on the weekends. you can also take the entertainment shuttle to the store, mall movies etc. on the weekends.

    Food and Dining

the food is decent. the student center dining hall is the only dining hall on campus. it has the same food over and over and is poorly run. there is never enough employees working or cash registers open during the busiest hours. they run out of food that they know is used everyday. besides that there are other locations to eat on the other side of campus but they are not open on the weekends. overall, everyone gets sick of the food quickly.

    Dorm Life

the netherlands (all freshman housing) is terrible. it is so old and run down and the bathrooms are gross. it is suite-style living. the towers are nice being renovated in waves. i live in bill of rights, which is newly renovated and very nice. it is communal living and i don't have a problem with it.

    Academic Rigor

challenging enough but not impossible. some professors are terrible so do your research before picking classes and professors. there is a tutoring center which students can make appointments at and a writing center which is also extremely helpful.

    In three sentences

    Tips for prospective students

If interested in coming to Hofstra, make a visit during the fall and spring to see if you like it. Many students believe that Hofstra is a party school before they get here, but are disappointed when they do arrive. Just one thing to think about, are you coming to college to party away or to educate yourself?

There's an interesting group of bear statues on campus. As for unusual traditions, watch out for gangs of serial farters.

    Bang for the buck

Bang for the buck? That remains to be seen -- just how valuable a Hofstra diploma will be in today's job market and ultra weak economy. Warning: Hofstra is NOT CHEAP. Expect to pay A LOT to go here.

    What to do for fun

Everyone has their own idea of what fun is. If you're outgoing, able to initiate friendships, willing to try new things and smart enough not to do stupid stuff, you can have a reasonably good time at Hofstra. One warning: the place is lousy for surfers.

    Food and Dining

How far you have to walk to get a meal depends on which dorm you are in. Again, the higher priced dorms are the closest to food, etc. The meal plans are a bit of a rip-off because what you don't use up of the money you invest in the plan you lose at the end of each semester -- and the meal plans are remarkably overpriced.

    Dorm Life

There are good dorms and bad dorms., the bad ones are the most cramped, out of the way and the least expensive. ALL are expensive.

    Academic Rigor

    Greek Life

I joined a sorority, and it was the best decision ever. Greek Life has an organization for everyone. Each frat and sorority is involved in Fall Festival and Greek Week.

    What to do for fun

Hofstra makes going into New York City very accessible. There are also always events going on on campus. Clubs and sports are fun, too. Nightlife is not amazing, but some nights can be really awesome. The bars are pretty fun though.

    Food and Dining

    Dorm Life

I lived in Stuyvesant, the newest and nicest dorm on campus. It was like a hotel. It was relatively small so we were all one big family. I felt so safe and comfortable. The other buildings that are suites are also nice. The towers are pretty old and gross but tolerable.

Hofstra University has a beautiful campus and a great location with being so close to New York City and offers you opportunities to get internships in the city. Campus doesn't close until late at night---and Hofstra's not in the greatest neighborhood. Public safety comes quickly when called, but going out in the dark alone is not recommended.

Great for these types of students

Hofstra's a very accepting place. LGBTQ students will find the environment welcoming. Hofstra has a fantastic communications department here, making it a good choice for those majors.

    Bang for the buck

Food is expensive. Good, but expensive.

    What to do for fun

NYC is very close, and the Blue Beetle (Hofstra Bus) runs to the train station and back all the time. The campus bus also goes to the local Target, Stop and Shop, and the humongous Roosevelt Field Mall.

    Food and Dining

Food is good. There's a Chipolte like place in the Student Center that tastes better than Chipolte. There's also Sushi, Indian and Chinese food, fresh cooked fish and omelets, and a burger place in the main cafeteria. There's also a restaurant-style place open from five at night to early in the morning and a twenty-four/seven convenience store. Everything's good, but expensive.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is great! I live in one of the honors dorms and they're very close knit. Full of nerds and all that.

Campus is very safe because Public Safety is always around patrolling and there are emergency phones connecting directly to Public Safety everywhere you look. It has to be a safe campus for the President of the United States to come and debate the Governor of Massachusetts in October 2012.

    Clubs and Activities

With over 100 clubs there is sure to be one for you. If not you can always start your own.

Great for these types of students

If you are a book worm you will enjoy Hofstra's 10 story library. It is filled with books from the early 1920s and some even earlier. Definitely check it out and enjoy the quiet study floors to get work done. If you are a computer person you will enjoy Hofstra's computer labs. If you are an athlete you will enjoy the new gym which is equipped with the best work out machines.

    What to do for fun

For fun there is the new gym to work out in that is equipped with the best and newest eqipment. There are plenty of fields to go in to play frisbee or have a catch. There is always something going on somewhere around campus because there are over 100 clubs and there is also an option to start your own club if you want to. One of the popular clubs is Hofstra vs. Zombies which is pretty much tag with nerf guns. There is karaoke every Friday and band performances on Saturdays. If you want to leave campus the city is only 30-40 minutes away via train or car whatever you prefer. There is also a mall nearby so shop until you drop.

    Food and Dining

Personally I am very happy with the food at Hofstra. There are many options all around campus. There is an Au Bon Pain where you can get soup and sandwhiches, an Indian restaurant, an Chinese restaurant, a Sushi restaurant, an Italian restaurant...California Pizza Kitchen, a Gourmet Salad stand, a Kosher restaurant, an organic restaurant, Subway, Nathans and a place to get burritos and burgers. I have been able to fill a craving everyday, there is always food available at Hofstra. There are also plenty of options for those who are Vegan or Vegetarian. Bon Appetite.

    Dorm Life

I am a commuter so I wouldn't know much about dorm life but from what I see everyone is happy. I haven't heard any complaints about the dorms so I assume they are nice. The dorm I stayed in for Orientation was nice and roomy for a college dorm.

    Academic Rigor

Hofstra expects students to work hard to achieve the most they can. There is no way to get an A if you slack off. Professors are understanding but will not give you an A if you do not deserve it. So work hard and try your best.

    Tips for prospective students

I recommend new students to come into Hofstra embracing the diversity and ready to try new things. Once you get to Hofstra I am sure you will find something you love to do outside of studying. Whether it is a sport such as Baseball, Softball, Skiing, Rowing or a club such as Habitat for Humanity or a Sorority or Fraternity I can ensure you will be happy at Hofstra. Also be ready to study and work hard for classes because Hofstra expects the best from its students.

    Food and Dining

It offers themed housing, which is helpful since most people in your house take the same courses. It also has a homey feeling to it. And, don't expect to see your RA because they are never in their room.

    Academic Rigor

    Tips for prospective students

Visit the school and get to know if you will fit in and truly like it.

    In three sentences

This is a great school and you truly learn a lot. Try to take harder classes and not the easy classes because then it really is a waste.

    Campus Safety

campus safety is great. I feel very safe on campus and I believe Public safety reacts appropriately depending on the circumstances.

    Greek Life

Greek life is pretty big. Its not everything but its pretty big. Its not for everyone but you can certainly try it out, learn more about it and find which one suits you best

    Clubs and Activities

There is literally something for everyone. Big clubs, small clubs, cultural clubs, academic clubs, religious clubs. You can find something that is for you and really meet people that share a common interest. There are clubs that volunteer, party, and do all sorts of things.

Great for these types of students

The school is great for students who like classes of 20-30 people, where they can get as much help as they need. There are great tutor centers, writing centers and career centers. This school is not too big but big enough that you can meet someone new every day.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There are a few unusual things about Hofstra.. 1. The guy that walks around with no shoes and a tree branch 2. The bird sanctuary 3. the many strange statues scattered throughout campus 4. the random unispan at the end that no one uses

    Bang for the buck

The school is very expensive. However there are many opportunities and resources it offers. I would say that I do think its worth paying the private school price however I do not think that It should be this expensive at all. People are constantly having to leave, transfer or withdraw because it is so expensive.

    What to do for fun

There are many things to do for fun. There are festivals, concerts, movie events, RA events and much more hosted by Hofstra. There are always club events of all kinds, Greek life events and of course the bars. If you want even more adventure you can go to the city. The trip is not that far and the shuttles are quite convenient.

    Food and Dining

The food gets tiring, however I believe that is the case no matter where you go. There are so many options here at Hofstra and possibilities to eat healthy if you want. There are many many choices and its up to you to spice it up. It is also fun to grocery shop and cook yourself, saves money and creates more variety.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is what you make it. Just like anything in life, you have to bring something to the table. Find you niche, whether it be greek life or one of the many clubs here at Hofstra. You must come open minded and have a positive attitude. You can have fun at the bars if you like, there are cute cafe's nearby, the city is not far at all, or just make the most of it in the dorms.

    Academic Rigor

Academically, Hofstra is not that competitive. Academic success is a big part of Hofstra's mission statement but there are definitely other schools that are far more competitive.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not party too much your freshman year. Take each semester very seriously and always ask for help. Help will be given to those who ask. It is easy to get caught up freshman year making new friends, trying to fit in and clowning around. You must remember that you need to start strong in order to ensure that you finish on time and keep any financial aid you may have received.

    In three sentences

Hofstra University is a medium sized school that is perfect for someone who wants to be apart of clubs, organizations, groups or even start their own. Hofstra University offers so much help and assistance academically it makes staying on track that much easier. Hofstra University's faculty and staff is helpful and encouraging.

    What to do for fun

Go to the city, join clubs, go watch drama department productions

    Food and Dining

I wish there were a few more vegetarian items, but there is still a high level of diversity and Red Mango smoothies are the best.

    Dorm Life

There's a kitchen, laundry, and air conditioning in every dorm. They're not gorgeous necessarily, but they do the job.

    Academic Rigor

The classes can be difficult, but it is not extremely challenging. The professors have a lot to give, but in courses that are either required or not honors level you are likely to run into some slackers.

    Tips for prospective students

Go to the city and take advantage of all the free trips that are offered. As much as the professors are intelligent and there are a variety of majors, it is silly to go and not take advantage of all the social and job opportunities the city provides.

    In three sentences

Hofstra has great professors and awesome activities for students to join. It is great to be close to the city and it has a lot to offer. The only problem area for Hofstra is that it does not always provide the financial aid necessary even though it's extremely expensive.

    Tips for prospective students

Take your time, it can feel overwhelming at times.

    Clubs and Activities

Lots to do but I'm not doing it yet.

Great for these types of students

Creative/artistic; musical. There is a business school, engineering school, law and medical schools so obviously there are lots of different programs and types of students but I was attracted to the radio/TV production facilities and the music department.

    Bang for the buck

Expensive private university -- for me right now, not being sure what I want to do or major in, it's a lot of money to just be OK. Hoping to feel more engaged with campus life and feel like it's really worth the money.

    What to do for fun

There are lots of music and other performances on campus and the mall is nearby. Take a train into New York City for everything you can do there!

    Tips for prospective students

Definitely visit enough schools to get a better idea of what you like and don't like (size, overall feeling, how it looks, programs offered). I knew as soon as I visited Hofstra that it would be my first choice when I applied to schools. We came back a couple of times (it's close enough to my house to do this) and I always felt right being there. However, the actual being there experience is not as I'd expected so I think it's wise to interview students to get their take on the school as well.

    In three sentences

I'm not feeling 100% great about my college choice at this point; I love my roommate and hall mates, classes are OK, but there is a lack of school spirit I had hoped for. I like being in college but might explore other options for next year.

Our first month of school there was someone getting robbed or held up with a gun every weekend. There was also kids getting shot randomly with BB guns.

    Food and Dining

Its good but can be expensive

    Dorm Life

    I commute.

    Academic Rigor

Its hard if you don't study but pretty easy when you do the right thing.

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared to spend a lot of money and to deal with the financial aids office incompetency.

    In three sentences

Hofstra is expensive (Very costly). Nice academic buildings. And nice size (population).

Not part of it, you don't need to be to have fun.

Go to NYC and explore. There's always something going on there.

    Food and Dining

    Very good options, always fresh.

    Dorm Life

Rooms are decent sized and you have a lot of different options, from suites to singles.

    Academic Rigor

I found it easier than my high school. The teachers are great and I've found most of them will help you succeed if you go to them for help.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved with clubs and explore NYC you're so close to it.

    In three sentences

It's a fun school but don't expect too much from the campus. Sometimes feels like there isn't a lot of school spirit but being so close to NYC always ensures a good time. You'll meet people from all over the country, not just Long Island, which is awesome.

theres clubs for everything and so many activities throughout the day. Wether its for the career center or the clubs itself, its great!

Great for these types of students

Everyone wether you like to party or actually study, the diversity among the students is really good.

    What to do for fun

the intramural sports that are offered are great and a lot of fun. Also go to the gym is amazing especially having a vet modern facility.

    Food and Dining

there are many different options. However the prices are somewhat unreasonable.

    Dorm Life

Not really sure. Almost half of the students are commuters.

    Academic Rigor

Its great! The professors are very helpful. The registration process for students is very easy.

    Tips for prospective students

take advantage of the opportunities that Hofstra offer. especially for internships and clubs.

    Campus Safety

While there are a great amount of crimes outside of the campus, Hofstra's card system and gates provide for a safe campus. Security officers are consistently patrolling the university and are pleasant to talk with.

    Bang for the buck

While Hofstra University does offer a great amount of merit-based scholarships to its students, the overall price is still high. The campus seems less ornate and beautiful than what may be expected for a university of such high costs.

    What to do for fun

Hof USA, a dining location on campus, offers a small arcade and hang-out atmosphere. Local bars and restaurants cater to student events and parties. One of the largest shopping malls, Roosevelt Field, is down the street from the campus and Hofstra runs a shuttle to it every weekend. Traveling on the Long Island Rail Road, to New York City or to eastern parts of Long Island is easy thanks to Hofstra's train shuttle that runs every day. New York City is great for day trips!

    Food and Dining

A majority of dining locations offer fruit bars and salad bars with premium ingredients. The dining hall in Hofstra's Student Center also offers great vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options in the forms of custom pastas, custom sandwiches, and smoothies and shakes. However, the food prices are exorbitant, a box of cereal at Dutch Treats, Hofstra's 24/7 market, charges $7.15.

    Dorm Life

The 'towers', which contain housing for all four years tend to be where most people congregate. However, the suite-style living for freshmen, the Netherlands, is across the street from the rest of the dorms and student union. This makes the Netherlands too segregated from everyone else and does not encourage interaction amongst students.

    Academic Rigor

While the professors were great and well-versed in their subject areas, the challenges and responsibilities expected of college students was not present. In fact, AP courses taken in high school felt more rigorous in comparison.

    Tips for prospective students

Express your personality in your application! The more you express your interests and attitude, the more responsive Hofstra University will be. A majority of students receive merit based scholarships, so be sure to allow all aspects of your academic and financial background to be seen by Hofstra. Visit the campus. Make sure its size and location is someplace where you can see yourself for four years. While there, go to the top floor of the library, where New York City's skyline can be seen.

    In three sentences

Personalized application process. Developing university, Hofstra is trying to bring itself to the national spotlight. Reminiscent of a community college, a majority of students commute to school, which hurts Hofstra's ability to create college spirit.

    What to do for fun

Best college food I've ever had

    Dorm Life

Very large for a typical dorm. Most first year students live in suite-style living. RA staff is excellent.

    Academic Rigor

Hofstra provides many ways to challenge yourself in academics, such as Honors College and difficult courses, and to provides the support if needed, such as The Writing Center, Tutorial Services, Professor's office hours, etc.

    Tips for prospective students

Visit the school prior to attending. Embrace the leadership opportunities presented. Make sure to attend all career service fairs, internship fairs, etc. Will definitely benefit you in the long run. GET INVOLVED!

I played sports at Hofstra, but those that aren't so fortunate as to be on a team, get involved in clubs, club sports and greek life.

    Food and Dining

The food does become repetitive but is good for college food. Fresh veggies and fruit are great and the eggs are always yummy.

    Dorm Life

I didn't live there, I commuted but the dorms don't look terrible.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you take advantage of the career center. Get involved! Become a part of greek life, athletics or club sports to keep yourself busy and make some friends. Use professors' office hours they are there for a reason, to help you!

    In three sentences

I have had a wonderful experience at Hofstra. There is so much to do and become involved in. Hofstra helps you out a lot with career planning, the class sizes are small and the professors are wonderful.

    What to do for fun

If you're into working out, the gym is definitely a fantastic place. The swimming pool is also pretty decently kept, so there's an option. Honestly, if you don't have a car to get off campus/don't plan on taking the train to the city often, your best bet is to get involved with clubs so that you're doing things on an active basis. Otherwise, it's pretty easy to feel down about not having much fun.

    Food and Dining

Meh. It's hard to eat healthy on campus because there's so many tempting options. The sushi bar is pretty decent, however, so I'll give them that. You get tired of the smells of the food places really fast, but there's food in abundance. It's not cheap though, so definitely get a meal plan.

    Dorm Life

Wouldn't be able to tell you. Shout out to all of my fellow commuters!

    Academic Rigor

You definitely do need to put in the all nighter or ten if you want to succeed. Professors don't want to work with you unless they see that you're putting the effort in. Finals are hard, but the library is cute enough to make the long hours bearable.

    Tips for prospective students

Stay focused, stay focused, stay focused. It's easy to get distracted by the four bars that are tangled in the streets besides Hofstra, but more than ever before, you have to keep your eyes set on where you want to go. Also, buy a car. Long Island isn't great with public transport.

    In three sentences

Hofstra is not for those who aren't sure what they want to pursue. Packed with opportunities-- you just have to be able how to decipher how to find them and take advantage of all of it. Hofstra also has some really great professors -- they'll definitely challenge you and try your patience, but once they see you're trying, they can be some of the greatest people you will ever meet.

There are the Hofcats all around campus. They are adorable! do not be surprised if you see someone who looks like they are taking a picture of a tree... its probably a cat.

    What to do for fun

lots of parties that go on around the Hofstra campus. There are also various bars/clubs that are on the turnpike (within walking distance) that let 18+ or 19+ in. Night shuttle that drops people off and picks them up.

    Food and Dining

Many places to eat on campus. you might get coupons to eat off campus throughout the year from various handouts in the student center. only sucky thing is that all the places on south side of campus close at nine and on weekends.

    Dorm Life

If it wasnt so expensive, i would give it a five

    Academic Rigor

Hard school. You eventually get used to it.

    Tips for prospective students

    1. Dont slack off. - it may seem hard but you will get used to it. 2. Dont get caught up in all the extra bs.- if you dont want to do something, dont do it. 3. Some of the faculty members are idiots. - its ok. we all know this. 4. Get as much money as you can out of this school.

    In three sentences

Hofstra is a very good and very expensive school. There is always something to do on and off campus. In a very crappy part of long island (gang center of nassau county).
