    - Nursing Majors - Education Majors - Business Majors

    Tips for prospective students

    - Come to collage with a completely open mind. You'll do a lot of changing here and it will all be for the better. - Get involved. Meeting new people is not always easy so join a club, sorority, frat, sports team, band, or study group asap. Doing this will really help you meet the people here that will stick with you forever. - Study hard and don't wait till the last minute. Classes here can be hard and overwhelming if you don't stay on top of your workload.

    Bang for the buck

I believe that as a public university the price is right for ISU. The only suggestion I would have when it comes to financial aid is to apply early and quickly. Because it's a public school it's much harder to be awarded any grants or scholarships from the university.

    Am enjoying being here

I love being at ISU. There are so many clubs and organizations that you can be a part of. Any talent, hobby, or activity you enjoy you can find here. Becoming a part of the Greek community here has been something that I really enjoy. It's a great way to meet people, get involved, and learn new things about yourself, others, and your school.

    Am learning a lot

I have learned so much already from ISU. I came to school having no idea what I wanted to do and no direction towards any specific career path. Illinois State helped me figure this out quickly my freshman year through its variety of General Education classes. It really opened my eyes to all of the options you have once you begin your education here.

Students who want attention from teachers will be very happy with their choice to attend Illinois State University. Illinois State has a great nursing, teaching, and business program. If one of the programs I just listed fits you, when you tour hear check out those colleges. Finding the right specific college fit is just as important as finding the right university.

    Tips for prospective students

As I stated above, Illinois State although a great value, is not cheap. Look into scholarships still, and find every bit of help you can. Also, when you come to visit Illinois State look at all the residents halls. We have four distinctly different halls. Someone might love Watterson Towers for example, but another might hate it. Find the residence hall that is that right fit for you, and you will enjoy Illinois State much more.

    Bang for the buck

Illinois State is by no means cheap, but it is a great value. A degree from Illinois State will be similar to a degree from many other big schools. Illinois State is a very respectable school, and is making tons of improvements to stay that way. Illinois State is a great school now and will continue to be great far into the future.

    Am enjoying being here

I couldn't be happier with my decision to attend this school. I have met a ton of great people, and I still have two years to go! Illinois State being the first public school in Illinois has many student organizations that have been around for a long time. With over 300 student organizations on campus you will find at least one the will fit you. Illinois State is definitely my home away from away

    Am learning a lot

Really great school for many different majors. I am a business major, and could not be happier with the professionalism and personal attention for all of the professors in the college of business. When here that Illinois State is a big school with a small school feel its not just a line to get you to come here. It's true you are not a number at Illinois State University.

    Tips for prospective students

You should get involved, there are clubs, sports, and activities for everyone. You meet so many new people and just enjoy the four years you have here. It's a great school, its not to big but not to small, its perfect.

    Am enjoying being here

I love being here, and on breaks I can't wait to go back

    Am learning a lot

I have learned a lot this past year, not just academics but how to be independent as well as getting involved and making the experience worth it.

    Tips for prospective students

Advice I would give to prospective students would be to have an open mind. If you are coming to ISU with a group of friends from high school make sure to go outside of your comfort zone and make as many new friends as possible. I would also say to join as many clubs and become involved, because this may be the last opportunity to really be involved in something because your join the real world.

    Bang for the buck

Being a public school ISU has an average tuition. However, because ISU is a public school it is that much harder to recieve grants and scholarships. I would say apply for as many possible as early as possible.

    Am enjoying being here

I could not imagine myself anywhere else. I love being at ISU and half the time I don't even want to go home for breaks. The clubs and activities on campus are endless. There is not one person that should feel like they don't belong because of the wide range of activities that are available. I personally decided to go greek and join a sorority and it was the best decision I could have ever made. The friendships I have made will be life long and they have helped me become the person I am.

    Am learning a lot

I have learned so much from attending Illinois State University in just the two years I have been there. There is a great variety of different kinds of classes you are able to take depending on what you are interested in. Most of the general education classes are taught in large lecture classrooms with about 200 students. This could be difficult for many people, but for me it made me focus harder and push myself to learn. If you are having trouble in classes though, the professors at ISU are more than willing to meet with thier students during office hours. Not to mention that are plenty of free tutoring sessions. It is a campus full of many opportunities!

Great for these types of students

Any kind of education major should definitely apply and attend ISU.

    Tips for prospective students

ISU is a big school. If you want to go here, I recommend a visit before you make your decision.

    Bang for the buck

It's expensive, and I could really use some help paying for it, so my parents are helping, but they also have to pay for my sister who's going to North Central College in Naperville, IL. That's also really expensive. I know in the end it's worth it though, and my parents want to see me go to school and be successful regardless of the money factor. Help would be appreciated though! :)

    Will enjoy being here

Of course I'm going to miss my family and friends here, but I know I will meet a lot of new people. I love the campus at ISU too. I feel like it will be a home away from home.

    Will learn a lot

I'm going to be an elementary teacher, and Illinois State is the best university for education. I've heard it from a lot of academic professionals. I know I will learn so much about teaching. I can't wait!

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be scared! College should be some of the best times of your life; embrace it. Join clubs and get involved and meet new people, but DON'T let your social life take over. You also need to make time for your classes and school work. You need to actually go to class and take it seriously as well. Don't write off a class as a blow off and think you can get away with not going. All they ask of you is 50 to 75 minutes of your time per class, so just roll out of bed and go, even if it's in your pajamas!

    Bang for the buck

College definitely burns a hole in your pocket, but for being a state school Illinois State does not ask too much of you when it comes to tuition, especially if you are considered an in-state student. However it really helps to apply for as many scholarships as you can and FAFSA has definitely helped my family out a lot with the expenses as well.

    Am enjoying being here

Illinois State also has a great social atmosphere. I have met so many nice, fun people. It is a really BIG school, but I feel like I see people I know everywhere I go. Joining clubs and going to the events the school throws also helps you meet a lot of people and have fun even if you're not big on partying. There's something for everyone here!

    Am learning a lot

The teachers at this school are unlike any high school teacher; they really care about you and whether or not you pass or fail. They are always willing to make time for you after or outside of class, meet personally and talk with you about your grades and give you opportunities to do extra credit. The school also just opened a tutoring center which is FREE and open to all students! They offer tutoring in a variety of classes, which has greatly helped me out in the past with bringing my grades up to my satisfaction! All of the subjects you can choose from are SO interesting, whether they apply to your major or are just general education. I learned so much about other areas of study other than my own.

Great for these types of students

Illinois State University is great for all types of students, especially ones that are hard working, motivated, dedicated, and determined!

    Tips for prospective students

Apply for as many scholarships as possible especially if you receive very low- no income. Know the difference between work and play! Remember that your education comes first and that you are paying for this. Get to know all of your professors! Get involved!

    Am enjoying being here

My first year of college was amazing! I met a lot of unique individuals. The campus is very diverse which is something that is very important to me because it gives individuals the opportunity to go outside of their comfort zone. I also enjoy being here because the professors show interest/concern in your education and the peers around you also show interest/concern in your education. Also at Illinois State University there is an academic advising building that offers a lot of help with any course, which is another reason I enjoy being here. The environment here is very friendly! The only thing that would make me love this school even more is being involved in some type of club, sport, or organization.

    Am learning a lot

During my first year of college at Illinois State University I have learned an abundant amount of information. Being an individual who is studying psychology has only boosted my confidence in pursing my profession in the business world. Illinois State University hasn't only taught me a lot of things academically, I have also learned a lot about life in general; like the fact that I need to get adapted to a more diverse environment and how to actually survive the college life on my own. Attending Illinois State University has expanded my intellectual ability as well as my attention span, and as a current student I can honestly say that I have learned a lot here.

If you know, or have a good idea, of what you want to do.

    Tips for prospective students

Try to avoid Watterson Towers if you do decide to come here. It is very hard to meet new people since each floor is secured with different keys. Also, changing majors is a bit of a hassle, so if you are not sure of what you want to do, like myself, it is difficult here taking classes to figure out what you want to study.

    Bang for the buck

ISU gave me NO financial aid. All I got was a government subsidized loan. For as much money as I am paying a year, I should be able to take different classes to figure out what it is I truly want to do. Unfortunately, that is not allowed at ISU and switching majors is my only option for getting a taste of different classes.

    Am enjoying being here

It is a beautiful campus, but if you do not want to party or join a greek affiliation, it is tough finding things to do on the weekends. Plus, if you get stuck living in Watterson Towers is a bit tough getting used to as a freshman. Defiantly not a good dorm to live in freshman year.

    Am learning a lot

It is hard to get into certain classes and getting on a personal level with teachers. Freshman and Sophomore classes are typically all intro and gen ed classes filled sometimes up to 650 people. There is no challenge, just a medium to accommodate everyone.

There is something for everyone at ISU. It is an especially great school for education majors!!!

    Tips for prospective students

-live on campus!! -get involved quickly after arriving on campus

    Bang for the buck

The school is a little pricey. I know it is a state institution and therefore there are not many scholarships offered by the school. Outside scholarships really do help.

    Am enjoying being here

There is always something going on on campus. I does not feel like we are in the town of Bloomington/Normal, rather we are our own community. The people and experiences thus far have been great.

    Am learning a lot

Although I thought my general education classes would be boring, I really enjoyed my classes last semester. They were interesting yet challenging and I feel like I walked away from all of them knowing more about the subject and myself as a student.

Financial aid is hard to secure sometimes, so stay on top of funds. Regardless of the price, ISU will provide you a quality education for a price that isn't as high as many other university schools.

    Will enjoy being here

Campus is fantastic. Enjoy the Bone!!

Great for these types of students

Great for outgoing, friendly people who like to party or just have fun. Very supportive of members of minority groups. Great teaching and business programs.

    Tips for prospective students

Fill out your application early if you want to be accepted into a competitive degree program. Most scholarships must be applied for and are not just awarded when you apply to the college. Most scholarships have a April deadline.

    Bang for the buck

Most students here need to take out loans unless their parents pay for their tuition or they have a job. This college may be inexpensive compared to Illinois colleges, but without in-state tuition and grants the price increases a lot. If you are from out-of state you should seriously consider how much you are willing to pay before attending this college. There are few scholarships available and most are extremely competitive. It is difficult to find campus job opportunities.

    Am enjoying being here

If you are from out of state you may have trouble adjusting, but there are many programs and events around campus where you can make friends.

    Am learning a lot

This school has classes that are not as difficult large universities and private schools, yet teaches the same material and concepts. How much you learn depends most on how much you study.

Great for these types of students

I really feel like Illinois State University is a great school for everyone, and I'm not just saying that because I go there. Yes, it is a big school, but they do a great job of making it feel like it is a small school in certain aspects. Class size range from 15 to an upwards of 300 people, but I never felt overwhelmed, and I don't like being bombarded in a ton of people. As for an out-of-academic-life, ISU has a party scene, but if you don't want to go out, there is a TON to do otherwise so ISU is good for people that like to go out and have fun, or people that would rather stay in.

    Tips for prospective students

-Bring Command Hooks! I used them to hang up everything from jewelery, purses, keys, posters, and much more! -Personally, I don't like having dirty people on my bed, so I opted for a futon. They take up a lot of room, but they are great for entertaining and having a place for guests to spend the night. -Keep your door open when you are in the room, especially during the first week! I'm a fairly shy person, but I met so many wonderful people by simply having my door open because when people walk by they'll stop and say hi. -Meet your neighbors! At first, the girls next door were very loud, so I never really got to know them, but now that I did, I'm moving in with them! Each of us have driven to each others' houses this summer to hang out. -Get involved. I joined a co-ed basketball rec league team and loved it. It's a great way to stay active and meet new people. -Go to class. It sounds simple, but in reality when you walk down the hall & see your friends getting ready to go out, you really don't want to go. I made it a point to say that going to class is not an option, which in turn, helped my grades.

    Bang for the buck

In my opinion, Illinois State University does a great job with including extras in their tuition. Most events that are hosted and tutoring in the Visor Center are free of charge. Despite this, some sporting events are not free, which I found to be quite irritating for people that didn't buy the Red Alert Pass (Which I purchased and found as quite a good deal) because these tickets can add up quickly.

    Am enjoying being here

Illinois State University has been a very inviting place from when I had my first visit, to the day I left for summer break and they continue the hospitality throughout summer with mailings to keep students updated. The University does a great job having activities for students to go to such as hypnotists; Reggie Nights which are free bowling, billiards, and karaoke; and many other opportunities for students that don't want to get involved the partying scene. The friendly environment created by the Quad and interaction between students has definitely made my college experience more enjoyable. I love all of the girls on my floor and have met many great people both as students and staff. On my first day of college, I never thought that I'd actually want to go back, but I'm counting down the days for school to start up again!

    Am learning a lot

Throughout high school I was in mostly honors classes. Illinois State University has kept me academically challenged without completely overwhelming me. All of the professors I have had are very knowledgeable and willing to help as much as they can. If you are struggling or wanting extra help, ISU offers many tutoring opportunities in the Visor Center, which is another great avenue to get assistance. ISU professors really pride themselves on giving students the opportunity to get the grades they would like as long as they put in the effort studying and getting extra help if needed.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

To name a unique location on ISU's campus, most would mention the Watterson dorms. This dorm is the tallest building from Chicago to St. Louis and is the tallest dorm in the country.

    What to do for fun

Student organizations and the UPS (University Program Board) provide fun and exciting programs for students to attend many times a week. Fliers are posted all around campus about when and where to go to find the program they're throwing for you to enjoy yourself.

    Food and Dining

The quality of food and comfort of dining at ISU is one of the reason I'm very thankful to be attending this school. With friendly vegetarian and vegan options, the dining centers make it easy for me to feed myself.

    Dorm Life

Living in the dorms at ISU is an amazing experience. Living among your friends soon feels like living among your family. The residential services strive to comply to any and all needs of the residents.

    Academic Rigor

ISU challenges it's students to be all they can be and to work at the best of their abilities.

    Campus Safety

    excellent.

    What to do for fun

5- The school offers a variety of events each from open mic nights, to comedy shows, to concerts. There is always something to do.

    Food and Dining

2- The dining center food after the first few months gets old and you become sick of it.

    Dorm Life

4- It depends what dorm building you are staying in. Hewitt-Manchester and Tri-Towers are renovated so they are nice. However Watterson and South side were not renovated so they were not nice this year. However, Watterson is going to be renovated by this coming fall.

    Academic Rigor

4- I personally think it depends on the major you choose. The sciences for me would be rigorous at any school so of course at ISU they are rigorous. Other fields of study however, such as Psychology, English, or History I do not find rigorous at all. I have heard from multiple sources the math program and the nursing program at this school is very rigorous.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not waste your freshmen year just because it is your freshmen year. Work hard, go to tutoring, and ask your professors questions. Freshmen year is two semesters worth of your GPA.

    In three sentences

In three sentences I would say that ISU is great at offering that big school campus with a small school feel. It has perfected that to the tee. It also makes you feel safe on campus. Lastly, there is always something to do on the weekends; there is never a dull moment.

    Campus Safety

I actually feel really safe at ISU. We have night bird watch where if you don't want to walk alone, security will walk with you. You have on campus and off campus police that are always around to make sure students are safe. You have emergency phones and buttons to press when you need help. You also have cameras that are watching in different areas if someone is a threat to you. Just like there are varieties of people on campus; there are varieties of safety on campus, so you never feel alone.

    Greek Life

There are different types of greek life. You have alphas, omegas, kappas, and all types. It includes recruitment, pledging and visiting the different houses. Although greek life is expensive, people say it saves the money on food, housing, and other stuff. Also, being a greek life includes raising money for your greek team and paying for rent in your house. I admit some houses look way better than others.

    Clubs and Activities

Volleyball (men and women), basketball (men and women), medieval club, quidditch club (if you like Harry Potter), figure skating club, dance team, mountain biking team, lacrosse, golf, swimming, ghost hunting, different religious groups, and so many other options. Even if you don't like the choices that are given, you can start your own club that includes an administrator monitoring it. In the clubs they do exciting things like compete, get involve, and so much more.

Great for these types of students

If you want a diverse rich school that has a medium campus with a large feel. If you like varieties of careers, clubs, and lots of fun (no limits). If you also want to experience a great education and be challenged. ISU is where you want to be!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

At ISU, we have a 5 day freshman passage days event. This allow students to get know each other, get to know people on their floors, you get the time to adjust to the campus (learn where everything is), and you get to know the counselors that will help you during your freshman year.

    Bang for the buck

Even if you don't know what you want to do in your future. No sweat, literally! ISU offers undecided programs where you can discover what your interest are. This helps you learn more about yourself and what you enjoy in life. Honestly, you would be surprise how many freshmen went undecided this year.

    What to do for fun

At ISU, we have a bowling alley, students and greek life throw parties, ISU has fun events (glow fest, late night luau, concerts, and so much more), there are nice dinner restaurants you and your friends can go to, sand volleyball at the tri-towers, picnics, floor hangouts, and more than that. It just depends on who you communicate with and how you want to spend your time for fun.

    Food and Dining

The food is sooo good. They have so many varieties including different cafeteria foods, subway in every dorm building, and different restaurants all around the school. At times though you do get tired of eating cafeteria food after a while.

    Dorm Life

I was in an overflow room (lounge) with three other girls. It can be a difficult thing to deal with but we manage to get along majority of times. Otherwise, every dorm building has a flaw; one maybe too far from the academic buildings, another doesn't have a cafeteria, and the last one makes it hard to socialize with other people.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are quite challenging, especially the major classes. However, it also depends on what type of high school education you receive. If you took college courses, you maybe be able to understand lessons faster than others. On the other hand, regardless of what education you receive, if you really want to do something you will take on the challenges that presented to you. At ISU, you have professors, TA's and tutors that are willing to help along the way.

    Tips for prospective students

First, don't be afraid to not know where to start or what to do in college; you have people that will help you understand what to do. Second, college is totally different from high school, so be prepared to come with a focused mind, and be willing to learn and see new things.Third, not every class will be your favorite class but you have options to what you want to do with it, your counselor is there to helo you. Lastly, be firm about what you want from your roommates but be kind with them too. No one should have a hard time with their roomies lol.

    In three sentences

Illinois State University (ISU) is a great way to get a great education and experience different things. You have adults and students that want to get involve with your career and future. It is a fantastic place to meet lots of unique and different people, socialize, and have fun.

    Campus Safety

Safety on campus is good. I have a few evening classes that I do have to walk alone to and from my dorm. I feel safe walking on campus. If anyone feels that they need security, there are areas all over campus that you just press a button and security will be there to escort you.

    Clubs and Activities

There is a club available at ISU to interest just about everyone. If ISU does not offer a certain club, you can create a new club. Activies are always available from concerts in the park to barbeques. Attending Football games every weekend is always a good time.

Great for these types of students

ISU is great for all types of students no matter what your interest is. Students of all races gather at ISU and we become one big happy family.

    Bang for the buck

My education is very important to me and my parents. I want to get the most out of my College experience. My parents moto to myself and my sisters is Study Hard Play Hard. That is what I go by. If I study and get good grades, I deserve to have a good time with friends.

    What to do for fun

There is a lot to do for fun. Play football with buddies. Work out at the gym. Bowling, swimming, wall climbing, etc. Join clubs such as the hot sauce club. There is always something available for everyone.

    Food and Dining

Food and Dining are ok. I always enjoy it when my parents send me Home Cooked Food vs cafeteria food. Cafeteria hours are very flexible to accomodate my schedule.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is fun and exciting. Meeting new people all the time and getting together just to chat or to study with them. You always have someone with you to go places with.

    Academic Rigor

Studying is very important. It is not like high school. I actually have to crack open my books and study in order to pass test. Take plently of notes in classes and always pay attention to deadlines that the professor gives you.

    Tips for prospective students

Try to have an idea of what you would like to major in before attending college and live on campus to get the full experience of college. Visit the campus a few times before attending. That's what I did and it made it easier for me to get around places.

    In three sentences

ISU has a lot of great features. Professors are friendly and I feel I am getting a good education. I enjoy living on campus and meeting new people every day.

In my opinion Illinois State give you a great rate. It really is an excellent college for the amount you end up paying per year. There are also so many housing and dining options that it makes it easy to find the right plan for you at the right cost.

    Am enjoying being here

I absolutely love the campus. I feel like I am enjoying my college experience so much already. There is always something going on around campus. It is just a great environment and I am so happy I made ISU my college.

    Am learning a lot

I definitely feel like I have already learned so much in my first semester at Illinois State. I was skeptical as to how much I was actually going to get out of an education at ISU when I first started with my classes, but I can honestly say that I have gotten a lot of the classes I have taken so far. I also feel that the professors were professional and efficient educators.

    Tips for prospective students

Keep an open mind while meeting new people and when choosing a major. Your first couple years of college you learn a lot about yourself and your passions that you may not have previously been aware of.

    Bang for the buck

The price for ISU is very reasonable as it is a public university.

    Am enjoying being here

I really enjoy going to ISU! The people are friendly, and there are always opportunities to make new friends. Whatever your major, there are lots of activities you can be involved in, from major oriented clubs, like Sports Marketing Club or WZND radio, to sports, such as football, cheerleading, or hockey. ISU also is known for the Fell Arboretum, which covers a large part of the campus and quad. It looks absolutely beautiful throughout the year, especially fall. The quad makes getting from class to class very easy. ISU also provides a transportation system allowing students to get from one part of campus to the other, and the Bloomington-Normal busses also drive around campus to parts of town, such as the Eastland Mall, which is great for students. ISU's dorms are nice and ISU's housing offers many themed floors which allows students to get to know other people in their major. Many of the dorms have dinning centers which serve a variety of good food in an all you can eat style.

    Academic Rigor

ISU has offered me several opportunities for learning a vast amount of information over the past few years. I have learned a lot from my classes and about myself.

    Tips for prospective students

Whatever you do, do not live in Southside. Their food court is terrible and their dorm rooms are so tiny. It literally looks like a prison cell.

This school is great for students who like the small campus, big community environment. It's great for Education, Nursing, Athletic Training, Actuarial Science and Business Majors. It's also very affordable!

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure to visit, what works for some students may not work for you. Also, don't underestimate your teachers or classes. You don't want to get a bad grade in your Gen. Ed. classes because you thought Geology was the easiest class in the world.

    Bang for the buck

I did not have to pay one penny my first year! The tuition is cheap and worth the money! Just remember to fill out your FAFSA early because the money does run out if you submit it too late.

    Did enjoy being here

It was a great, beautiful campus. All the academic buildings are close together in the beautiful quad which is between the 4 different campuses. Everyone knows each other and are so friendly. It's so great to be able to have a small campus though it is considered a BIG campus! They also have PLENTY of clubs, organizations, events on the weekends and the new fitness center with rock climbing wall, Zumba, pool, etc.

    Did learn a lot

I learned a lot coming into ISU. With the help of the general education courses I was able to learn about several different topics which led me to decide on my major. The professors are great and very helpful throughout the whole semester. I never had a complaint about them!

ISU is especially known for it's education program, so check it out if you are an education major. However, there is more to ISU than just the teaching program- there is something here for nearly everyone.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are eligible for the honors program, apply! It offers a personalized educational experience with extra opportunities that other students may not have.

    Bang for the buck

The quality of education is mostly great, and you recieve more personalized attention than at larger, more costly schools. I choose here over applying to places like Harvard or Yale for that reason.

    Am enjoying being here

ISU's main slogan is that it has the opportunities of a large university but the atmosphere of a smaller college. There are a plethora of opportunities and so many things in which students can get involved. Everyone seems more friendly than big-name schools where students are forced to be more competitive than friendly.

    Am learning a lot

I am in my first semester and taking mostly general education courses. No matter what your major, you will learn a lot about various subject areas in these courses.

    Tips for prospective students

Watterson has the biggest dorm rooms. Tri-towers has an excellent food court (despite limited variety) and is largely considered the best one on campus. Hewett/Manchester are nice, but if you don't like going outside I wouldn't live here, as you have to walk two blocks to Watterson for food. I have loved living in Southside, but unfortunately it won't be available next year, which means reduced housing! So get your housing contract early if you're planning on going here. I was placed into supplemental housing my first semester, which wasn't the end of the world, but it left me feeling rather indifferent towards living in the dorms. After two semesters living in Southside, I absolutely love it, and I am really sad Southside won't be serving as a dorm after this year. I'll miss it for sure. And if you want to make friends, it's simple, get out and talk to people, and get involved! Leave your door open the first week of school, and introduce yourself to your neighbors. If you are feeling particularly school spirited, I would advise going to the Alamo II or Campustown for fun ISU shirts and other stuff. It's cheaper than the bookstore in the Bone.

    Bang for the buck

Eh, college is expensive, what can you do about it? Just apply for scholarships and stuff. As long as you're learning something and you like where you are, which I definately do, that should be what matters.

    Am enjoying being here

I love all of the people I have met here, and I have yet to have a boring weekend. I love living in the dorms and taking part in as many of the campus activities I can. I would never miss a football game or basketball game! Especially the basketball games against Bradley (our rivals)! The food in the dining centers is REALLY good, especially compared to some horror stories I've heard of how it was a few years back (before they started fixing up campus and making it as nice as it is now). I love ISU, and I'm so glad I ended up here.

    Academic Rigor

Some of the professors are kind of crazy, but if you're paying attention you might actually learn a thing or two! I have been very lucky to get only one class taught by a grad student, and I did not have a good experience with that class, however it really is different for everyone and how you learn.

Depending on you access to a car you can go to the movies or veterans parkway which contains many stores and restaurants for college kids. You can also chill in the dorms or go to parties on the weekends.

    Food and Dining

The food at ISU is really good. The menu varies and there are a lot of holiday specials that the school offers throughout the year. Overall I have no complaints about the food.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life is good at ISU. It depends on the dorm you are in but you can live on a coed floor or a floor grouped with people from your major.

    Academic Rigor

It all depends on the class and teacher but most are not to hard. Most teachers work with students on class expectations and assignments. Generally, the bigger the class the less challenging it will be.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply early for ISU because it can take a long time for your application to get processed. Make sure to arrive early for your move in date so you can beat some of the lines and heat. Try and buy your school books online because the school bookstore is overpriced.

Hard working, fun-loving students who are looking for a good education that won't take over there life. ISU is full of friendly, open minded people who are looking to make friends and participate in all different kinds of activities. Illinois State University is a wonderful place for the well-rounded student looking to learn a lot in and out of the classroom.

    Tips for prospective students

Visit! I didn't know how much I would love Illinois State until I took a campus tour. Be open minded and come see everything we have to offer! Once you're here, get involved! Join everything! Immerse yourself in your school. Live in the dorms, make friends and participate in at least some of the school's organized activities. They usually end up being a lot of fun!

    Bang for the buck

Such a great deal, especially compared to other big Illinois universities. They are super helpful with financial aid and flexible with payments. They also make getting a job on campus or doing a work-study program very easy.

    Am enjoying being here

I love ISU! I love the campus, I love the people, I even love the classes. Everyone here is so friendly, the campus is beautiful and always has something going on. The school plans so many activities and off campus events are fun, too. Perfect location, in a small town, but right by a bigger city. I'm honestly never bored or lonely. ISU made the transition from high school to college effortless, it truly feels like home.

    Am learning a lot

A lot of amazing courses, some annoying ones, but for the most part the professors really make an effort to make the course content accessible and at least a little enjoyable. If you are willing to put the effort in you will learn a TON. Professors and T.A.s are always willing to help out, they have several different tutoring centers and classmates are always open to studying.

One of the best things about clubs is that if there isn't a club that interests you, you can start one of your own.

Great for these types of students

They always have fresh fruit available and there's an ice cream bar. Besides the dining halls, there are a bunch of other resturants not far from campus, so there's variety if you look.

    Dorm Life

It's great. I've met so many people in such a short amount of time. We're all from different places, so conversations never get boring and my RA's pretty cool too.

    Academic Rigor

I'm a science major and so far, some of my classes are kicking my butt. They definitely have challenged and pushed me to my limits. I don't mind it though because this makes me rise to the occasion, which in the long term helps me be prepared for many challenges ahead. Going to Rate my professor wouldn't hurt though.

    Tips for prospective students

    Campus Safety

Safety is very important to ISU. There are blue emergency lights placed all around campus that keep students safe. With just the push of a button under these blue lights, a campus police officer will arrive in under a minuet to help. There is also an emergency alert system that sends out text messages and e-mails when there is a security threat around campus. Also, you can call night walkers to come escort you back to your residence if you are out late at night studying or coming home from work. I have never felt unsafe at ISU.

    Greek Life

Joining a sorority was one of the best decisions I have ever made. It made my first year in college a lot easier because I met so many people by going through recruitment. I have met so many friends through Greek life and I really enjoy volunteering for the community through my sorority. I always have something to do on the weekends and am busy during the week attending various charity events for other sororities and fraternities. I also have gained leadership experience by being the VP II of my sorority. Even if you decide to not join a chapter, just going through recruitment is a great learning experience and allows you to get to know people. GO GREEK!

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many clubs and activities to join. There are clubs that are strictly for majors (like C.O.M.M Club for communication majors- these clubs help build resumes and help with networking for future employment). These clubs are great for preparing for your future and they also help you connect with other students in your major, as well as professors. There are clubs that you can join for fun and experience. You can join volunteer clubs, like Habitat For Humanity. There are fun clubs, like the hula hoop club, different dance clubs, and sport clubs. There is even a group of students that play Quidditch (like Harry Potter) on the quad. Theses are just a few examples of the types of RSO's available at ISU. I encourage attending Festival ISU, which is a day that all of the RSO's available at ISU, as well as local businesses, come to the quad and set up tables to showcase what they have to offer.

Great for these types of students

outgoing, fun, hard working, intellectual, and creative!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I love when it is nice outside at ISU because the quad is a great place to hang out. Students bring out blankets and do homework on the quad. People will play music and play football. It is just a relaxing environment that fits the college image perfectly. Everyone refers to the library as Club Millner. Each year during finals, the library holds a dance party at night for a study break. There are tons of videos on YouTube of parties at Club Millner, so check them out!

    Bang for the buck

Bloomington-Normal is not that expensive of a place to live, so I cant complain about that. I also suggest that the best way to save money is by putting dollars on your redbird card. Once you are out, then you are out, and that helps you budget. Redbird dollars are accepted all around campus for food, printing, ect.

    What to do for fun

I like going out to eat a lot because the restaurants are so good! The movie theater is really cheap for college students ( only $6 for a ticket and free popcorn on Tuesdays!) ISU also hosts double feature Fridays, which is an event that shows two movies that are still in theaters or have just been released on DVD. For girls, there are a lot of good mani/pedi places around town that are fun to go to. For those that like the night life, down town Bloomington has a ton of options. The most visited bars by students are Chasers, Elroys, Mulligans ( they serve drinks in mason jars), Blue Line, Fat Jacks, and Six Strings (this bar has a mechanical bull that everyone rides!) The Pub is where students go on Wednesdays.

    Food and Dining

Tri Towers has the best dining room because it has the Mongolian Grill, which is basically where you can make your own stir fry. Watterson has the biggest cafeteria, with options ranging from Chinese, Mexican, Home-Style, American Grill, and Italian cuisines. There is also a weight watchers-like section, where they prepare very healthy and nutritious meals. There is also a soup and salad bar, a yogurt and fruit bar, and a sandwich station. Besides the dining halls, all dorms have a subway located inside of them ( they are usually open until 2am Monday-Sunday). The Bone Student Center also has great restaurants, including Pizza Hut, Burger King, McCallisters Deli, Freshens, and Einstein Bagel Co. Around Bloomington-Normal, there are tons and tons of restaurants. Some of my favorite local places to eat are: The Rock Restaurant (Greek food) Wild Berries (all types of food, but I love their breakfast) Fiesta (Mexican food with half off Margaritas on Thursdays!) Flat Top ( stir fry) Kobe Steak House (sushi/Japanese food) Firehouse (pizza) D.P Dough (pizza/calzones) Avantis Italian Restaurant (they are famous for their gondola sandwiches) The Pub ( very popular bar for students, also serve great bar food-specialty is cheese balls)

    Dorm Life

Dorm life was a good experience for me. Watterson Towers is one of the tallest dorms in the country (its has 28 floors!) and has just been remolded. The other two main dorms, Tri Towers and Manchester- Hewitt, were also remodeled a few years ago. I lived in Watterson (Watty is what students refer to it as) and I thought that the bathrooms were very nice and the rooms were very spacious, especially if you have lofted beds. New apartment style dorms are also being built right across from the Rec Center, so that's something for new students to look forward to!

    Academic Rigor

Classes can be challenging, but as long as you do the work I have found that you will succeed. There are also numerous free tutoring centers around the university that are very helpful, especially when you are studying for a test.

    Tips for prospective students

3 Tips I wish I had known before attending ISU: 1.)The bookstore is much more expensive than other book outlets that you can rent/buy textbooks from. I suggest going to the Alamo to rent or buy instead of going to Barnes and Noble. I have found the cheapest route to be Amazon.com or Chegg. com. One GOOD fact about ISU bookstores is that they will always buy books back, even if they weren't purchased from their store. The only way you will not be able to return your books is if the class no longer uses your version. 2.) Make sure you keep in constant contact with your academic adviser. When you start taking upper level classes, enrollment can be competitive. If you are aware of all of your options before you register for classes, then you will not find yourself wasting time and taking meaningless classes just for hours. The advisers are great! Also, all freshman get their own adviser for their first year before transferring over to their major adviser. 3.)I met my fist roommate through Facebook, and we got along great! I know that you cant believe everything you read online, but ISU had numerous Facebook pages where you can see new students and transfer students looking for roommates. There are also pages dedicated specifically to your graduating class, so I suggest checking those out as well to meet some perspective classmates. I have heard a lot of horror stories about roommates that do not get along, but I think that getting to know someone before going to college will really help your transition into dorm life go smoothly because you somewhat know who you are going to be living with. There are other websites out there that match you up with perspective roommates based off of little surveys you take.

    In three sentences

Illinois State University strives to create a small class room feel with a hands on learning environment. What to do for fun

Join a club athletic team, attend the new rec center, engage in the seasonal rec sports, go to downtown bloomington or uptown, hang out in the quad

    Food and Dining

Waterson and Tri-Towers are great dining halls for students. Bloomington-Normal offers a ton of awesome food options including DP Dough, Meatheads, Redbird Pizza, Jimmy Johns, Avanti's and Firehouse.

    Dorm Life

I transferred to ISU without having to live in the dorms so didn't experience this life but from what I've heard it's a great time.

    Academic Rigor

Academics are taken and taught with pride at ISU. The classes are informative and active to keep students occupied. Learning styles are different for everyone but a lot of the my teachers have provided countless opportunities for help.

    Tips for prospective students

Get active and involved. It can be challenging at times and may feel lost in a new environment or just being away from home but stay positive and no that there will be good to come out of your experience at ISU.

    In three sentences

ISU is a great atmosphere and environment for students. The professors and school services provide an incredible amount of help for anyone involved. My future looks bright from to attending Illinois State University.

Campus patrol does a very good job in protecting everyone at Illinois State University

    Greek Life

Very active at Illinois State University.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many different types of clubs and groups that are provided at Illinois State University.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Nothing very unusual, but Illinois State University is a decently close community with a lot of friendly people.

    Bang for the buck

A good meal plan and using your redbird dollars wisely, then paying for food will be minimal.

    What to do for fun

The recreation center is a good place to work out and to play sporting activities, plus it is free to students. We have a area where we can bowl and play billiards. There are so many different options for fun activities, there is just to many to talk about.

    Food and Dining

For being a campus, that serves a lot of people the food is actually very good. There is a lot of choices and they are for the most part very delicious

    Dorm Life

It is a great way to meet people who are going through the same transitions as you are. It is a good way to grow as a human being and to meet people that you will remember all of your life.

    Academic Rigor

I also feel that if you manage your time correctly and stay on top of your school work, then you should have no problem in being successful at Illinois State University.

    Tips for prospective students

My one big tip for incoming freshman or transfer students is to take everything on thing at a time. I see many students get overwhelmed with the college life, and I feel that just taking a deep breath and staying on track is guaranteed to making your life a lot easier.

    In three sentences

To describe my school it is very hard to describe it in three sentences, but the first word that comes to me is welcoming. I feel that starting a new journey on your life, but the professionalism and the caring staff of Illinois State University really helps getting adjusted. It would be a great choice for anyone trying to further there scholastic journey.

    Campus Safety

By offering text and email alerts, students can always be alert of crime and dangerous activity. Additionally, there are safe call boxes that are located all over campus that will alert police if activated.

    Greek Life

Greek life is slowly dying as the administration sets strict standards and allows no new house construction on campus.

    Bang for the buck

Rated number 97 in the nation out of 4,000+ universities and can be had for around 24k a year.

    What to do for fun

The campus offers a great frolf course and a golf course. The new rec center is a great place to keep off the freshman fifteen. The Bone Student Center is a decent place to waste some time. The shopping on Veterans is enough to waste an entire day.

    Food and Dining

Tri Towers is home to the best food court, but don't eat the sushi. Dorm food is not the worst, but will definitely get old after two years. If you travel and eat at the other dining centers you can definitely benefit yourself. DP Dough is over hyped, as the best calzones. Los Portrillos is the best Mexican food I have ever had.

    Dorm Life

I absolutely hated the idea of living in the dorms for the required two years, but after the fact I must say I did enjoy my time. Everyone always told me my dorm friends would eventually be my college friends and as of now going into my senior year they couldn't be more correct. The dorms offer many activities including movie nights and stress relieving exercise education.

    Academic Rigor

Although I am doing very well, some students find many classes difficult. I believe that with any decent amount of effort anything can be accomplished. If you find a major you honestly enjoy, you'll enjoy the classes.

    Tips for prospective students

ISU really makes it possible for students who are unsure of their major to still graduate in four years, if your stressed out about making a concrete decision, ISU gives you some extra time.

    In three sentences

As their slogan at State claims, a big school with a small school feel, they couldn't be more correct. The teachers truly appreciate their students by dedicating extensive offices hours, offering teaching assistant positions, who also have office hours, and taking the extra step to help any student out. Living on campus is an incredible experience, the baseball and football games were exciting, the circus was amazing, and the quad events were extremely fun.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is one of the great things ISU has. They have a safe bird walk for students. If you don't feel safe walking home for a class you can call someone and they will be there to get you.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a lot of clubs and activities here that I have learned about. I plan on joining a few clubs here. I want to join clubs that I can fit in with and feel comfortable in.

    Food and Dining

The food and dining area is great. Everything is professional and the food is good.

    Dorm Life

I really love my dorm so much. When I first came here I thought that I wouldn't like it. Things turned out so different and I'm glad that I chose to come here.

    Academic Rigor

They are really strict on academics because they want to make sure students have fun and not break the rules. They want everyone to enjoy their experience here.

    Campus Safety

Our school has it's own police, as well as the Bloomington/Normal Police Departments. We have SafeWalk which is what you would call if you were walking alone somewhere and it was late, we also have crime advisory which are emails and texts telling us what is going on around the campus and what precautions we should take, if any.

    Greek Life

Our school has almost every Sorority and Fraternity each with their own houses and traditions.

    Clubs and Activities

I couldn't even name them all! There are over 320 clubs and organizations. My favorite would be the Quidditch team! (For all the HP lovers out there! we have actual matches against other schools)

Great for these types of students

This school is great for students who want a diverse environment with great opportunity and a lot of people who are willing to help you get to where you are trying to go.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

One tradition I love is the huge campus wide festivals, parties, concerts and activities. For instance, the campus wide Zombies vs. Aliens Nerf war which had Zombies wearing headbands and you could shoot anyone who was on the opposite team if you had a Nerf gun. Also, we have our very own school circus which is put together by ISU students who are extremely talented. Another thing I love is the giant dance/blacklight/glow parties in the library or on the Quad. They are usually after finals to relieve the stress.

    Bang for the buck

Although ISU can get pretty expensive at around 25K, most students get grants and scholarships from the state and outside sources and there is also help to keep you on a budget so that you can save up to pay for any loans once you graduate. There is no doubt that once you come to ISU, you won't regret it

    What to do for fun

You can check out uptown Normal, go into the city, take the bus (which is free for ISU students) or drive a car to Bloomington and check out the plaza which has many stores and restaurants, you can go to the Bowling and Billiards center on campus which also has an arcade, or simply go to the movies or to a play. There's so many things to do in BN!

    Food and Dining

In the Fall of 2012, one of the dining centers was shut down, but it doesn't take away from the fact that we have some of the best food on a college campus of course the typical burgers, fries, chicken patties, and such are always available, but our trayless dining centers provide full course meals. From the Mongolian grill, to the Chinese Wok, to the Fresh Bites, the grill, and the Italian station, it is a buffet which widely opens the eyes of every incoming freshman. Also, we have ,any restaurants on campus that accept our Redbird card flex dollars to pay for our food. But even staying for 4 years, you will never try everything in Bloomington-Normal. This twin city set has the more restaurants within its area than any other US city. I found this out my freshman year. It is truly an awesome provider of dining experiences.

    Dorm Life

The dorms here are always lively. People keep their doors open for nosy students (like how I was in my freshman year) to pop in and check out their room or just to say hey. There's cable, free wired and wireless connections, and there's even a phone hook-up. The dorms provide singles, double, quads, and suites. I absolutely love living in the dorms but there are also student apartments that the school provides including the new ones, Cardinal Courts, which were built for the Fall of 2012.

    Academic Rigor

Even for those classes that aren't honors intended, it can get pretty difficult. There may not always be a lot of work but the professors give you their best so they expect the same in return. Even with that being said, most professors doors are always open and they will respond to a quick text or email as soon as they can They want the students of ISU to succeed and they try to pave that road.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you apply for scholarships early as they are given away when financial aid is given away. Make use of the free tutoring and computer labs, they have pretty flexible hours and it never hurts to have a little review over a class lecture.

    In three sentences

Illinois State University is definitely the place for students to come when they want a lot of opportunities and options from a school but don't want that giant state school feel. The school offers some of the most interesting classes taught by great professors. It is also in Bloomington-Normal Illinois which are twin cities that provide something fun to do all the time.

    Greek Life

A plethora of Greek Organizations line our campus

    Clubs and Activities

Plenty of Registered Student Organizations (RSO),our campus ranges from the traditional to the extremes of Quiditch Team and Cereal Eating Club

Great for these types of students

Self paced learners, teaching majors, all students

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

WIlliams Hall on the Quad is known to be haunted by the ghost of first librarian Angeline Milner. In addition each year during finals week, a few fun surprises await for students planned by the University.

    Bang for the buck

ISU has been ranked within the Top 100 Universities for Value of Education, this University has competitive tuition to other schools, yet what sets ISU apart is Truth in Tuition, this 4.5 year lock in of tuition guarantees what you pay as a freshman will be the same as a senior.

    What to do for fun

Uptown Normal is a block away from the quad, this area offers a plethora of small town restaurants, movie theatre, book stores, and bars for those of age. Within Uptown is the Uptown Station, this bus terminal has bus routes that run through the town every 30 minutes, with a Target, Walmart, Large shopping mall, and over 150 restaurants within a short bus ride ISU offers some great relaxing activities.

    Food and Dining

The 2 dining centers on ISU's campus present high quality food. Each day new and fresh ideas are offered in a relaxing environment where one can sit for a meal or grab a quick snack between classes. The only downside of these centers as that at peak times the wait for serving lines can be a tad long.

    Dorm Life

The residence halls at ISU are some of the best! they have all been recently renovated and boast a Subway Restaurant within each one, this convenience of dining in the dorms presents itself as one of high caliber. With some of the dorms being open for 9 month housing, ISU's dorms offer adapted living for students that may not be able to go home for certain breaks by offering them options to live on campus during those times off.

    Academic Rigor

ISU has a very tough nursing and education program to seek admission to. Both of these nationally ranked programs are not impossible to be admitted to, but do require excellent students who are self driven to achieve the highest with minimal outside influence. Overall ISU has seen an increase in its academic performance in the last nine years under the direction of President C. Alvin Bowman, his strong grasp on what makes a university strong has formed the forefront of modern education.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure to visit the campus before deciding whether this is where you'll want to be. One of the great aspects of ISU is our quad, not all universities offer a quad, and this was a selling point in how it presents itself as a college campus town and not one of more urban proximity. Also, do not be afraid to call ISU and ask for a personal visit to campus, while some universities are repulsed at this idea, as it is an inconvenience, ISU will openly welcome you to campus at a time that works for you and your family.

    In three sentences

ISU is a great school for any student, especially those pursuing a career in: education, business, or nursing. This university is one of the best ranked in the nation and will continue to be such with its student body growing as it is today.

    Campus Safety

Safety at ISU is top notch. No one should ever feel unsafe. There are emergency buttons all over, along with the ability to have someone walk or drive you home if you feel unsafe. If something does happen students are notified by a text or email so that they are aware and can keep an eye out for any potential danger.

    Greek Life

I wouldn't know because I'm not in the Greek program. But from what I've heard it's pretty good.

    Clubs and Activities

There are tons of clubs to join. No one should feel left out here. There's something for everyone. And if not, you can make your own club. Clubs always have fun things to do.

Great for these types of students

The programs put on by the University Program Board and Up Late At State are always fun to go to. Not to mention the concerts on the quad and double feature days. Also, I would recommend looking in to trips and programs hosted by the Leadership and Service Office. There are always many great service opportunities around.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The courtyard of the Hall of Business is pretty cool. Make sure you wear your spirit ware/ISU ware on Fridays.

    Bang for the buck

If this is asking what i think it's asking, the tuition makes sense for all that ISU has to offer. There's always things happening, people to talk to and places to get help. Not to mention it's a great community and the education is top notch.

    What to do for fun

Sure, you can go to party's if you wish. But there are always things to do around campus. The tons of clubs always seem to have something going on, Up Late at State and the University Program Board are always planning new events, not to mention the Bowling and Billiards center, concerts on the quad, etc. The list is endless.

    Food and Dining

Always plenty of options and occasionally a nice surprise (like crab legs or lobster tail). The food at ISU is delicious. It is good food. But I will say after a while you do start to notice that some of the food options always stay the same. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. But it can grow old quite fast.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are great! There is always a sense of community and you can make some of your best friends there.

    Academic Rigor

Like any school you want to make sure you study hard and get good grades. As long as you work hard, study, do your work and talk to students, teachers and tutors you are good to go.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you visit the campus at least once before deciding. Talk to teachers, faculty and students about their experiences and pros and cons. Also, make sure you check out the dorms, fitness center and student activity building. Make sure you love it before deciding that it's the one for you.

    In three sentences

Illinois State is a medium sized school that is open and diverse. The atmosphere is friendly and there and there is always something to do. It's a great place to get you to get your education, meet new friends, and get you prepared for all that the world has to offer.

ISU is safe as long as you're not stupid and walk alone at like 3am. If you stay near campus then it's fine, but if you head towards Bloomington then you need to be careful, but only at night. The campus town is relatively small which is nice as well.

    Greek Life

There are many social and professional Greek organizations on campus.

    Clubs and Activities

There are over 300 registered student organizations on campus so you are bound to find something to join and get involved in. Almost everyone is involved in at least one, if not two organizations.

Great for these types of students

Great for students who are from the Chicago Suburbs because a lot of students are from that area. It's great for those who are academic and those who are more social.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There are many nicknames for places on campus as well as many crazy traditions that you will just have to find out for yourself.

    Bang for the buck

There is no longer a difference between in state and out of state tuition, they are both the same price. ISU isn't terribly expensive and it's well a well known school especially in the fields of Education, Nursing, and Business.

    What to do for fun

There is a bowling and billiards center as well as the student center. There are many organizations on campus to get involved in as well. Nearby is an ice rink, zoo, movie theaters, and many other fun places to go.

    Food and Dining

It's campus and cafeteria dining food. Tri-towers has the best and freshest food. It is all you can eat buffet style for every dining center. There are also other places to eat on campus that you can use your meal plan for. These places are Subway (one in each dorm), Einsteins, Burger King, McAlister's Deli, Jamba Juice, and Pizza Hut

    Dorm Life

They are continuing to improve the dorms and they are pretty nice. They just built on campus apartments that are the new dorms for sophomores. Our dorm Watterson is the tallest point between Chicago and St. Louis and is the tallest dorm in the nation with 25 floors.

    Academic Rigor

The toughness of classes depend on your major, but for the most part teachers are very understanding and are fair. The gen-eds are pretty easy and classes get more exciting once you start taking your major classes.

    Tips for prospective students

If you want to attend a well-known and well established school with a small campus feel then ISU is for you. It is not too hard to get in and once you're here you are a part of the redbird family.

    In three sentences

ISU has a friendly atmosphere that is continuing to improve as renovations are continuing to be made at the school. Its medium sized campus with 22,000 undergraduates feels intimate and like a small school. For the most part the class sizes are small and they are really good.

The Greek Life is kind of small at ISU but I couldn't imagine myself not a part of it. Everyone is friendly and we make great memories. You can ride the bus for free with you student ID card, so it is easy to go to the mall. Also, there is a movie theater not too far from campus that is only $6. On the weekends there are plenty of fun parties to go to with friends also.

    Food and Dining

The dining hall food is not bad at first, but then you start to get very sick of it. So it is nice that there are other places to eat like Subway or McAlister's. And at those places you can use your flex dollars instead of cash.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are all very nice. They are not too small, but could always be bigger. It is nice how the dorms are all so close to campus so it is easy to walk to classes.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are not too difficult. The only down side is that you have to go through all these General Education classes, but you would have to go through those no matter what college or university you were to attend.

    Campus Safety

Campus is extremely safe, which was one of the selling points for both me and my mom. We have a Campus Walk program, where you are able to text the phone number and students will arrive at your location to walk you to your dorm building or to another classroom at any time. We also have stations throughout campus where you can call and a police escort will arrive to walk you to your destination if you ever feel unsafe. However, with the ISU Police, the Normal Police Department, and the Bloomington Police Department, the feeling of being unsafe is almost never felt. They also provide e-mails and text messages if any suspicious activity students need to take note of occur.

    What to do for fun

ISU always has ways for students to relax and have fun. You can buy a Red Alert pass, which gives you free admission to all home sports events, including mens' basketball and football as long as you pick up your ticket ahead of time. Movie nights are offered one Friday every one or two months, and different organizations are always offering fun, free or cheap events for students.

    Food and Dining

The food is very good here. Watterson Dining Center gives students a variety of options, including pizza, pasta, hamburgers, french fries, and a salad bar, every single day. We also have Subway restaurants in our dorm building, as well as Pizza Hut and Burger King in our Bone Student Center. We also have a Jamba Juice, an Einsteins Bagels, and a McAllisters. The best part of all of these restaurants? You use your flex dollars to buy meals, so you aren't spending money directly.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life is great here! I have met some of my closest friends through my dorm building. Watterson Towers has a reputation for being confusing, but it only took me the first day to figure it out. We have a dining center and a Subway attached to our building. My R.A. is very friendly and always giving our floor ways to interact.

    Academic Rigor

When it comes to the classes, ISU has proven to be challenging but not extraordinarily difficult. It is important for college classes to challenge you and to require you to think outside of the box. The classes at ISU do this, but the teachers are always offering assistance and you can work with your peers.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved! The simplest way to completely alter your college experience, but also seemingly difficult for some students. With hundreds of Registered Student Organizations, ISU provides opportunities for involvement for students with all sorts of interests.

    In three sentences

Illinois State University has definitely proven to be the college for me. I have met amazing people and grown as a person while here. The nightlife is great here at ISU. There is ALWAYS something going on, parties to go to, or campus events happening. Bars are a bus ride away, which is the only downside of nightlife here, but I can tell you from experience, it's better because you don't have to walk! The bus (which is like a party bus BTW, NOT run through ISU but through someone individually so drinking, and dancing is acceptable and encouraged) drops you off literally, RIGHT IN FRONT of the bars and will pick you up and drop you off right in front of your apt!

    Food and Dining

Absolutely love the dinning halls here at ISU. The food is great and they make it really easy for you to eat healthy! Lots of options, and the meal plans come with flex dollars for you to use at local restaurants like Subway, Einstein Bagels, or McAlister's.

    Dorm Life

I can't rate on dorm life, because I am a transfer student, but the friends I have made who did live in the dorms have met their closest friends there. Overall the dorms are really nice and half of the buildings are brand new.

    Academic Rigor

Classes are challenging the more into your major you become. However, from my experience the professors are more than willing to help, if you are willing to put in the effort to seek the help. They won't spoon feed you, but you'll be a better student for it.

    Tips for prospective students

Get in contact with your academic adviser early and keep in touch with them frequently. The worst thing is to realize you should be taking a class you're not, which could land you in summer school or worse, prolong your progress toward your degree.

There are countless things to do in the town of Normal and Bloomington and you can always hang out with your friends around campus.

    Food and Dining

Food and Dining are absolutely great! If you have food allergies, like me, they make the menus available online a week before they're served and they provide you with the ingredients and nutritional facts. There are also multiple places to eat. You can grab food in a Dining Center or use your FlexDollars to buy food from the Subway or other restaurants on campus.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are great but they all have their advantages and disadvantages. With Watterson you really don't get to meet as many people as you would expect to meet. In Tri you have to walk about 10 minutes just to get to your classes but the dorms are renovated.

    Academic Rigor

It's challenging but very understanding the only thing you have to do is maintain a good schedule that way you're able to study. Your professors will be willing to assist you whenever you may need help.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply early for the school and make sure to pay your enrollment and housing deposit fees early as well. When you sign up to attend your orientation make sure to pick the earlier dates because they allow you to pick better classes and get your books in a lot sooner than others.

    In three sentences

The campus is big in a way but small at the same time. It's so easy to get along with many people from different backgrounds. There is always assistance when you may need it.

    What to do for fun

There are many different activities that anyone could do for fun such as going to the recreational center. There is swimming and rock climbing. You can also work out. Another fun activity is to go to the quad and play catch or Frisbee or just hangout with friends and talk.

    Food and Dining

The food and dining around the campus is good. Nothing that I could complain about.

    Dorm Life

I cant rate the dorm life personally because when I start attending Illinois State I will be living off campus but I have visited friends that attend the University and the dorm that they were staying in. The dorm was nice and everyone seemed to be nice and willing to tell you any information that you needed to know to get around campus or the dorm.

    Academic Rigor

I cant actually rate the school academically because I have not taken a class there yet but I will be attending in the fall of 2013.

    Tips for prospective students

My tip for future students is to actually go and visit the college and look around.

    In three sentences

Homecoming week is very fun at ISU!

    Bang for the buck

This school is very home feeling and a nice distant from the northwest suburbs.

    What to do for fun

There are many organizations that are fun at Isu. There are alot of great opportunities to have fun through the student rec center too.

    Food and Dining

The food and dining is great. Between the two dining halls the selection is varied. Flex dollars are great so you can go to offering retail places like subway, Einsteins, and jambs juice.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is great! You meet alot of new people and the rooms are recently renovated!

    Academic Rigor

The general education classes are very basic but require dedication and time to receive an A. 200 level classes are intense but with resources and office hours the class is doable!

    Tips for prospective students

Some tips if you are interested in attending this university is to consider how well sized the campus is, how renovated the dorm rooms and apartments are, and how active and clean he campus is. This school has it all!

    In three sentences

Illinois state university is a modern, renovated, and upbeat university. It offers endless amounts of ways to get involved for students to obtain an education outside the classroom as well. My favorite part about Illinois state university is the student rec center!

    What to do for fun

    * Reggie Nights * Events/Cultural Dinners at the Bone *Quad Day *Party (however you define it) *Chill on the Quad- Try Slack lining! * Attend Group Fitness classes at the Rec! * Festivals *Improv Mafia *Tuesday Bingo nights at Firehouse-when pizza! *Or just hang with friends There is never nothing going on so just participate when you can!

    Food and Dining

Never really had a bad experience in the dining halls. They are so convenient, and they have so many options! I love how there was always a salad bar and fruit available so I never HAD to eat the other fried delicious stuff if I didn't want to.

    Dorm Life

Keep that door open and meet your floormates! (Your roomate(s) not going anywhere so don't feel obligated to stay buddy buddy all the time). Have fun, but still be respectful of your neighbors. I lived in the soon to be torn down Hamilton Hall of Southside and I loved it! Great location, and I had a lot of interesting experiences there....but I definitely couldn't do it again. Sharing a bathroom with 40 other girls, and living with someone in a box was fun an all, but I definitely enjoyed having my own room the year after.

    Academic Rigor

Depends. I have had some classes that are insultingly easy and some the kicked my butt. Definitely listen to previous students' advice about classes, and also go on rate my professor.com before picking classes so you have an idea of what you're getting into.

    Tips for prospective students

*Start getting involved in clubs/activities early- Time flys and you don't want to miss out! *Go on Alternative Breaks!- They are life changing, you have so much fun, and you meet so many people *If you can , try to take your gen ed's at Heartland or a community college back home to save money * Apply, Apply, Apply for scholarships! *Go to your Professor's or Instructor's office hours- If you need help that's where you'll get it. Also get to know them, those letters of recommendations aren't going to right themselves! * Time Management....it will either make or break you *Be open to new things, and have fun, its college! :)

    In three sentences

I give Illinois State a 3.5 out of 5 stars. There could definitely be improvement in cultural awareness, and acceptance of diversity; however, this university does excel in providing its students a great educational experience. Coming to ISU has been one of the best decisions I have made.

    Campus Safety

There have been some incidents at ISU, but for the most part it is very safe. I always felt safe walking home, even at night- though I don't recommend it. Campus police send out notifications every time there is an incident and state where the incident happened. You will know the places NOT to go. Always have a buddy, though, no matter what. Because no matter the place you are, you just never know what people are going to do.

    Greek Life

I was not part of a fraternity or sorority, but I saw many people who were, and heard many stories about the things that happened. If that is your forte, GO FOR IT. Illinois State's Greek organizations will welcome you with open paddles...I mean arms.... ;)

    Clubs and Activities

There is something for everyone, always.

Great for these types of students

All students can make a home here. Illinois State is welcoming, inviting, and loving. I am so glad I spent my time here. I highly recommend the English department if you are interested in anything of the sort. Most of my classes were in English and the teachers are just phenomenal. Philosophy students raved about their teachers as well. Come to think of it, I hardly ever heard a bad word about a teacher of any subject. I think they probably all just seriously rock.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Oh, you'll see. Illinois State is very unique.

    Bang for the buck

You can have fun even without a buck. There is always something to do around campus, always free shows and events, and always people looking for friends to have some fun with.

    What to do for fun

Go out! There are ridiculous amounts of extracurricular activities that you will LOVE to do! Some are school oriented (like a French group) and some are definitely not (like a comedy group). No matter what you like, there's always a group or a person who will want to do it with you. Also, when you turn 21, the bars are super.

    Food and Dining

Most of the food on campus is amazing, even the dorm food. The cooks like to change it up so you never get bored with the menu.

    Dorm Life

Depends what dorm you live at. Atkin is quiet, small, and good for someone who wants to know all the people on their floor. It's more of a relaxed, laid back dorm. Some of the other dorms, especially Watterson, are more party oriented. Choose what type of college lifestyle you want to live, and then do your research to pick which dorm is right for you.

    Academic Rigor

The teachers know what they are talking about, and they want you to learn and grow as a student and an individual. Some classes are tough, but always worth it. As long as you show that you are trying, almost all of the teachers are willing to give you extra help, advice, or whatever you need. They care about your education just as much as you do.

    Tips for prospective students

Go to the quad as much as humanly possible. Every single type of tree that exists in Illinois is on the quad; read a book under one of them. Don't party too much, but don't be a hermit either: be a good student but remember to have fun as well, because college is about the experience and the people you meet. Treat every class you take like it is a gift. Your time here goes by so quickly, and you're left wishing you could have savored the moments more deeply.

    In three sentences

Illinois State University is the most beautiful school in all of Illinois, and I'm not talking only of the gorgeous, inviting campus. ISU's professors care about their students in a way I have never before experienced, and they are constantly trying to make a positive impact in the lives of their students and in the surrounding community. Illinois State changes your life forever, and makes your perspective of the world just a little bit more wonderful.

Visit the Aviary in the Bone Student Center! It's quiet because it's not that well known, and it's so light and airy- perfect place to study or have a coffee with friends!

    Bang for the buck

Let's face it, going to college is expensive, and the government doesn't help us that much anymore. My parents make too much for me to receive most scholarships, but we don't make enough to hand over 13,000 a year on my education. This scholarship would be a great help to my family, who is currently in the process of paying for my education and saving for my brother's education. I currently work to help contribute to all the extras, but it would be nice to have a break every now and then!

    What to do for fun

There is so much to do! Ice skating is cheap- $7 for 2 hours of open skates. Several concerts come to both the Bloomington US Cellular Colliseum and in Braden Auditorium on campus. The theatre/fine arts departments also offer free shows for students. There is a lot of campus recreational events to attend. Shopping in downtown Bloomington and Uptown Normal is fun, there are great movie theatres (wait for Wednesdays- free popcorn at many places!), and so much more!

    Food and Dining

There are so many great places to eat in the Twin Cities! There is an abundance of fast food places to pick from if you're on a budget, and there is a plethora of legit dining around, too.

    Dorm Life

I transferred in as a junior, so I have never experienced dorm life! I have heard mixed feelings from multiple friends.

    Academic Rigor

It all depends on your major and your professor. Some classes are extremely tedious and demanding, others are easier and more low-key. Teachers do pay attention to the work that you are doing, so make sure you are actually following your requirements.

    Tips for prospective students

Get your books from Amazon! The bookstores will rob you blind and looking at books online are cheaper and can be same or better quality- and if you don't want to keep them, you can sell them back either online or in the bookstores. Get involved on campus! There truly is something for everyone. Try especially doing something outside of your major. I'm involved in Cru, one of our campus ministries, and it is one of my favorite parts about life down here. I've made great friends and am able to have a break from the studious parts of life. Spend time on campus! The quad is beautiful and is a good place to meet friends, hang out and relax, or do your homework.

    In three sentences

Illinois State University is a big campus with a small-campus feel. The classes I am in have great opportunities for more individualized learning from fantastic professors. There are so many opportunities to get involved in anything that you are interested in!

    Dorm Life

    Academic Rigor

I love that no matter how down you get about grades there's always someone to help support you and give you that boost to get it in to gear. There are peer tutors, classes to go into better depth on a subject, and professors are always willing to lend extra help you just have to ask!

    Tips for prospective students

If you're undecided that's totally fine, ISU has so many different options so you'll find something that;s right for you here.

Illinois State University is a great school with tons of great programs to fit the needs of anyone. Campus Safety

ISU does a really nice job of staying on top of all potential threats to students. They have on campus call centers, ISU PD is always around to help out (as well as Normal's police department) and they have a call/text/email alert system that gets to us right away.

    Greek Life

I am personally part of a service fraternity on campus, so I am more engaged in volunteer activities, but there are a several great clubs and fraternities/sororities on campus if you are into that lifestyle.

    Clubs and Activities

If you look at ISU's program board and dean of student's office website, you will see how many great clubs and activities there are here.

Great for these types of students

I do not think there is one type of student who would appreciate it here. I think you have to try to NOT get involved or find something to do to think that ISU is not a great school.

    Bang for the buck

I have really appreciated all that ISU has offered me in the last 4 years. From events, activities and clubs to leadership workshops, career building and advisement, it has been well worth it.

    What to do for fun

Whatever you are into, ISU has something for you. There are tons of clubs, sporting events, RSO's, and leadership opportunities. The school does a great job of entertaining the students, and they make sure to advertise and keep events up to date through the university program board.

    Food and Dining

The food is not 5-Star restaurant quality by any means, but there are some really diverse choices, a variety of health conscious items, and tons of on and off campus spots to eat that most students appreciate.

    Dorm Life

I only lived in the old dorms here at ISU and they were pretty nice, but I have seen the new dorms and they are amazing compared to other universities I have visited. I would recommenced a visit because everyone is different, but come and see for yourself because they have a lot to offer.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on the program, your workload can be fairly light or extremely difficult. Remember, it is a university, and as such, its goal is to prepare you for a career, so if you are looking for the easiest possible path, you might want to reconsider going to college.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not be worried if you have not made a decision on your major when you start your academic career at ISU. Get engaged in activities and participate actively in the community, and in doing so, you will discover your talents, passions, and what you will be happy doing.

    In three sentences

Illinois State University is, by far, everything I was hoping for in a university. Not only have I been challenged intellectually, but I have also been surrounded by some of the most intriguing and engaging programs. No matter who you are, there is something here for you at this university.

ISU has their own bowling and billiards center located on campus also a club the UPD, University Programs Board, arranges events on campus for students to attend like: Glow It Up: Dance Party on the Quad, hypnotists, comedians, 2 Movies for $1 nights, campus bonfire, Meijer Mania, etc. Also located on Veterans Parkway is a shopping mall and man other stores located around the mall and there is a movie theater as well. The student recreation center offers many basketball, volleyball, softball, etc games and they also have a climbing wall. There are tons of opportunities to have fun on and of campus you just have to do some searching.

    Food and Dining

Watterson, a.k.a. Watty, Dinning Center has many options for students to choose form. There will always be something there for you to eat! Be mindful of the time when you go because noon isn't the best time considering everyone is trying to eat lunch in between classes. Don't be afraid to ask for what you want, if the staff didn't give you enough chips then ask for more. It is like a restaurant, you are paying for their service so get what you want! The dinning center located by Tri, where most of the athletes live, supposedly has better food but is a 15 - 20 minute walk over there. There are also many restaurants in Uptown Normal or on Veterans Parkway that a student can eat at. Also in the Bone Student Center there are a few resturants like: Burger King, McAllister's, Pizza Hut Express, and Einsteins Bros. Bagels that take students flex dollars.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life at ISU is amazing! If you get out and interact with your floor they really will become your new family! You will also meet at least one person who will be your best friend through the rest of your years here at ISU. The dorms are very clean and very easy going. As long as you follow the simple rules set up for you in your housing contract then there wont be any problems. Most floors will have either weekly or monthly floor dinners and floor movie nights. Your dorm life will be whatever you make of it!

    Academic Rigor

The professors will assign a decent amount of homework but they are only trying to make you a better student and have an incredible work-ethic. Most professors are only trying to make you better than they are so you can achieve what you came here for, to better your education.

    Tips for prospective students

1.) The first week that after you move in, get out and meet your floor. Don't just stay in your room because you are afraid to meet everyone. 2.) Don't be afraid to go anywhere alone, no one is campus is going to judge you because you are eating lunch alone. 3.) Make sure to introduce your self to your professor. It is very important to be able to communicate with your professor, they are all extremely nice and just care about you doing well in their class. 4.) For the first week don't hang out with just your roommate, you will become very tired of hanging with them and it will lead to tension in your room. 5.) Explore the campus and surrounding town of Uptown Normal, there are tons of opportunities to have fun off of campus.

    Campus Safety

There are plenty of emergency posts surrounding the campus for safety. On top of that, there are security guards on call at any time to meet you where you are at and walk you home. I have never felt vulnerable and unsafe on the campus.

    Greek Life

When I first became and Illinois State Redbird, I thought that Greek life was not going to be for me. I decided to meet a few sororities at the club fair on the quad at the beginning of the year and I thought that maybe they would be for me. Although I haven't had time with my busy school and work schedule to join one, there are plenty out there for any one who wants to join!

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many clubs and activities that are offered at Illinois State, I can't even begin to name them. Let's just say, there is plenty for everyone!

Great for these types of students

Students who enjoy diverse settings or want to learn a foreign language, how to become a teacher or anything in business would love Illinois State. The education, nursing, business, and tons of other programs are some of the top programs in the state. There is no doubt that there is a spot for everyone here at Illinois State.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Avanti's, which is an Italian food place right next to campus, is a tradition for college students. My step dad, who is in his 60's, is an Illinois State alumni who has to have Avanti's every time he visits. The prices are great, and the food is delicious. It is a win-win situation!

    Bang for the buck

I am a struggling college student, and I am not abnormal. I know that a lot of students are financially struggling there way through college. My philosophy is that it will be worth every penny in the end. College is expensive, there is no doubt about that. I am making the best of my time here at Illinois State because it will be worth my while in the end!

    What to do for fun

Illinois State offers so many fun activities that students can be a part of. There is always bowling at the Bone Center, rock climbing at the Fitness Center, and food in the Dining Center. On top of all of this, Illinois State is constantly holding different events and activities on the quad and in the Bone Center.

    Food and Dining

Illinois State has an exceptional dining center. The dining centers are spread out in two different locations so that it is convenient for students on both sides of campus. The plus side to the food and dining at Illinois State is that it has a variety of options to choose from (e.g. Mongolian bar, Italian bar, salad bar, sandwich bar, etc.).

    Dorm Life

Dorm life at Illinois State is something that I have not personally experienced because I am a transfer student. My boyfriend has been here to experience it, and he enjoyed it! The cool thing about Illinois State is that there are traditional dorms, as well as apartment style dorms. This gives undergraduates a variety of options when choosing housing!

    Academic Rigor

I would consider the academics here to be rigorous. I am challenged to my full capability in every class that I take here at Illinois State. Also, I am always going home with home work and papers, which I am thankful for. This will eventually prepare me for the real world, which I will be in soon enough!

    Tips for prospective students

Illinois State University is a perfect school for many different students. The classrooms are full of diversity, and any one would fit in here. I feel like there is a club meant for every one here, they even offer a squirrel watching club! The awesome part about Illinois State is that it offers a large group of students in a small campus setting. Also, walking on the quad will offer fun activities going on every single day. There is never a dull moment at Illinois State, don't miss out!

    What to do for fun

There are a lot of clubs and activities to get involved with, as well as intramural sports, which I joined. Greek life has parties, and there are other types of parties near campus as well. There is places to go on the weekends near campus, as well as in Bloomington. It is just a matter of finding out what you would like to do.

    Food and Dining

The food here is pretty good, there is a variety of choices. Some of the venues meals change daily, but others are constant, so if you want something new, it doesn't happen often. There is enough choices, but they don't vary like when you're at home and can make whatever you want that day only.

    Dorm Life

I like the dorm I picked, Watterson. My room is bigger than in the others, but the rooms are arranged in little corridors as opposed to a big circle like the other residence halls. It is connected to the dining center, so I don't have to go outside to get to it. It is in a very good location, right off the quad, so again, I don't have to go far.

    Academic Rigor

The classes here can be challenging, but I think all colleges have classes with big projects and things like that, so it is typical. Lectures are difficult to work with, but you can still learn in one. It is challenging to have professors you can't understand, but that is part of the experience.

    Tips for prospective students

Look at all types of schools to determine what is right for you. Bigger schools like ISU are not for everyone, but it does provide a lot of opportunities. Know at least some idea of what you want to do, because different schools have different majors. If you want to major in something, go somewhere that has that major as well as back ups. You are allowed to transfer, but it can be hassle transferring from one four year school to another. Think seriously about what you want out of college and what type of school is best for you. You have to go somewhere because of what YOU want, not what anyone else wants or thinks you should do.

    In three sentences

ISU really is a big school with a small school feel. It is difficult to find your niche at first, but there is a wealth of activities to choose from, so there is something for everyone. I think it is a really great school and I am glad I chose it.

Academics are great here at ISU. I have yet to have a professor who did not take their job seriously or open their office to students who may need help. There are some tough classes but as long as you do your work and use your resources you can get through anything.

    Tips for prospective students

Use your resources. There are many online resources but be sure to get connected with your professors and get involved in registered student organizations. Many people are willing to help.

Tri-Towers is pretty far from campus, unless you are living in the south side of campus. Tri-Towers are usually for the athletes because they are exceptionally close to football stadium, baseball diamond, or the Redbird Arena.

    What to do for fun

There are plenty of things to do for fun! Illinois State University has so many clubs and opportunities to get active and get involved! At the beginning of the year they have Festival ISU which is a huge festival where every club on campus sets up a table or stand and tells everyone about what they offer. They also give out free stuff, like t-shirts, candy, coupons, sunglasses, bags, water bottles, food and much much more!

    Food and Dining

The dining halls are huge, but there are only 2 on campus and they always are super busy right at lunch and dinner time! The food also doesn't taste that great and some people get sick from it! Just be careful what you are eating!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There's a really cute bench that says For those who fell in love at ISU that pictures can be taken on for couples.

    What to do for fun

The obvious might be party. ISU is great for those and the parties really won't disappoint here. It seems like there's something to do either in a frat house or an apartment Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. If that's not quite your speed, the new football stadium was built just this year and the football games and tailgating are great. There are also open mic opportunities every Saturday night at Midnight where people do improv and poetry slams.

    Food and Dining

There are so many options for food here that it's hard to get sick of it. There is a salad bar every day along with a separate, specialty hand tossed salad. Other healthy options include grilled chicken and different kinds of fish daily. There are many stations in the Watterson Dining center such as Mexican, Asian, Homestyle, Grilled, Italian, and Healthy foods.

    Dorm Life

Watterson Towers is a great place to live! It is so close to the Quad, where every class building is, that I could not imagine living anywhere else. Also the very top floor is awesome to study on because Watterson is the tallest building between St. Louis and Chicago so you can see literally everything around you through the not-quite floor to ceiling windows. It's very inspirational. Also most floors have quiet hours after 11 PM which I have really come to appreciate because sleep is so important.

    Academic Rigor

Certain classes are very hard, like Physics 102 for example, but having readily available professors helps a lot.

    Tips for prospective students

Bring warm clothes! The winters are not nice here and make it hard to make yourself go to class sometimes, but stick to it! Skipping class is a very bad idea, especially because a lot of the freshman level classes here take participation points that can make or break your grade.

    In three sentences

This is really a great school. The classes are small enough that professors can take time out of their days to accommodate to students' needs, but there are enough students there that there is someone new to meet every day. The social aspects of ISU are also very appealing.

They are very thorough with safety. You have to scan your ID to get into the building. The only part that is an issue with that is the door between the dorm and the cafeteria when you are carrying food; I've dropped food numerous times. There are many emergency call buttons placed throughout campus, and security is always around to make sure that things don't get too out of hand.

Great for these types of students

Great for social people, for you get to know your floor mates easily for living in such close quarters. It's also a relatively large campus, but with all the buildings for classes relatively close together in the quad. I can walk from my dorm to my class across the quad in less than ten minutes.

McCallister's on campus is a bonus! Whenever I get tired of eating the same old cafeteria food, it's just like going to Panera. And may I add that it is all pre-paid, so I don't have to pull out my wallet, just my ID with my flex dollars! The rec center is beautiful as well having been built only a few years ago. The classes are a blast (especially Zumba!) and I love the instructor. The untraditional layout of Watterson Towers is also nice, for it's not a long hallway and it is much easier to interact with all the other people on the floor.

    What to do for fun

ISU's one downfall is that they do not have many events scheduled for students on campus, and if they do then they aren't advertised very well. There was festival ISU which was fun, and Bill Cosby was there for parents weekend. But if you don't want to party, then you have to make your own fun, which luckily isn't a problem for my friends and I.

    Food and Dining

How wonderful! There is such a variety of food and they have something that you always want! There does need to be another type of homestyle station though on chicken finger days though because the line becomes too long and wraps around the whole cafeteria.

    Dorm Life

Watterson Towers are wonderful. The girls on the floor can get rowdy at times, but the rooms are a great size and I love the layout of the untraditional dorm. The only irritating thing is walking up or down flights of the stairs to get to the elevators. Everything is very convenient, and they take the students security very seriously which makes me feel comfortable living in the dorms.

    Academic Rigor

Academically the school is fair and wonderful. The teachers are great and make it easy to understand the material to the best of the students abilities. I have minimal complaints about the teachers. Office hours have never been a problem either; they are always there with an open mind and are very helpful when questions are asked.

    Tips for prospective students

Keep your grades up and try not to fall behind because the school is strict in fair in students maintaining their grades and keeping up with their school work.

    In three sentences

ISU is a well rounded school with wonderful teachers. The policies are enforced well and fairly and I've had minimal problems with the school. The campus is beautiful and has the feel of a town, but with everything placed well together in the area.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is great at Illinois State. They take this very serious. Whenever there is an incident, Illinois State sends out a text message and email to all students warning them. There's also campus emergency phones.

    What to do for fun

Illinois State is located in a small town. However there are plenty of things to do for fun. Movies, bowling, restaurants, shopping, and museums are just a few to do for fun.

    Food and Dining

Illinois State has amazing food for students. Everything looks fresh and they have a healthy menu option too. Illinois State is concerned for their students' health.

    Dorm Life

Transferred at Illinois state as a Junior so never experienced the dorm life. From what I heard from other students is that dorm life is a fun experience. Dorm life is an opportunity to meet friends.

    Academic Rigor

Professors take academics serious, but always try to add a fun twist to it. Exams and homework are challenging but help students gain that extra knowledge. Many professors try to incorporate their lectures with in-class activities and projects which makes learning fun.

    Tips for prospective students

Coming into Illinois State, you may feel that the campus is too small. But, Illinois Sate has so many activities and opportunities for students to engage with others and have fun while gaining an education.

    In three sentences

Illinois State University is an overall great school. If you want a small campus but with a large university feel, then Illinois State is the right school for you. This school has many degree programs, over 200 extracurricular activities and sports, and plenty of things to do for outside fun.

    Campus Safety

Unfortunately, it is not possible to stop ALL of the bad things that may happen on campus. But for the most part, there is always an on-campus officer some place near by just making sure everything if going well. Along with that it is difficult for those who are not students to get in and out of the dorms without a valid ID for that particular dorm-housing building and ISU is well equipped with many different well planned procedures in cases of extreme emergencies.

    Clubs and Activities

With well over 200 clubs there is something here for EVERYBODY! Even the most mundane of tasks such as stretching has a club, there's a club for every race and nationality, if you like it we have it!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

ISU is infamous of chalking. Chalking is the way students advertise, inspire, and express themselves throughout campus by using chalk to draw on any inch of pavement (and even buildings sometimes) they desire. It's a fun and well-liked tradition held here throughout the year.

    Bang for the buck

College can be overwhelmingly expensive but ISU does everything they can to help you get the amount of money needed to further your education. Not to mention the countless scholarships they give away to students that are out actively searching.

    What to do for fun

Not including the countless amounts of events on campus such as the UpLate@State events, there is bowling, a pool hall, workout classes at the recreation center, and recreational sports to get involved in.

    Food and Dining

The food and dining of ISU is dependent upon what side of campus you are on and what your personal taste for certain foods are. The food is definitely no gourmet meal due to things like possible food allergies of students, etc. But it is not at all bad for the amount of people that are being served on a daily. Although sometimes the dining area can be overcrowded, depending on the time of the day, it is another great place to meet new people and spend time with friends.

    Dorm Life

Much like many other things on campus dorm life is what you make it. It can be one of your favorite aspects of ISU if you take the time out to bound and befriend the many amazing people around you. Many times people meet their lifelong best friends in dorms.

    Academic Rigor

I've always believed that the rigor of any work done is dependent upon the amount of effort a person puts into it. The rigor of the majority of classes at ISU can be easy if there is a lot of time, effort, and dedication put into it. On the other, the rigor here can become difficult and overwhelming if there is very little time, effort, and dedication put into it.

    Tips for prospective students

Come into the college life here with a desire to both learn and enjoy the time you have here. Although, as expected, there will always be a party please do not forget to stop and recognize the times that it is better for you to stay away from the parties and stay close to your books.

    In three sentences

This school has a warm, friendly environment with lots of people doing their very best to get you going in the direction you desire to be in. Unlike most universities Illinois State is full of professors that are more than willing to take time out of their busy schedules to stop and help a student in need. Along with the many different events hosted on campus, there are enough clubs here to fit the criteria of every students personal niche.

    Clubs and Activities

Get involved with a club and you're sure to enjoy it and make new friends. SAC is pretty good to start!

    What to do for fun

Go to Uptown and just walk around! Starplex is pretty fun too! There's also a lot of social events going on as well around the town.

    Food and Dining

The food will seem amazing at first but after awhile it just gets old and you'll miss your mom's cooking. In that case just use your Flex dollars and get McAllister's, Einstein's, Burger King, or Subway. That helps. In the dining center chicken strips are basically the best thing to eat. You can always tell if there's good food when there's a long line. Holiday meals are pretty great though.

    Dorm Life

I lived in Watterson. I'd say pretty decent as the dining center is connected to it and you can make a ton of friends on your floor. The elevators do seem to breakdown a bit. There is a fitness center in Watty too so during the winter you don't need to walk all the way to the Rec which I thought was a perk.

    Academic Rigor

The classes in your major can be tough and definitely challenging. Gen ed classes are pretty easy though.

    Tips for prospective students

Check out the campus. It truly is beautiful!

    In three sentences

I feel that this is a great school on a medium sized campus. Everything is pretty close and there are some very great professors here. This is defiantly the school for me.

    What to do for fun

Anything you want! Within reason of course...

    Food and Dining

The dining center food gets old after a while but it isn't bad. We have a variety of choices at both dining centers that try and accommodate for all tastes.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is alright but it does have down sides. Not enough privacy and the walls are paper thin.

    Academic Rigor

Okay, some classes will be hard and some will be easy. General Education requirements are not too bad but there can be some that are just nasty. Once you get into your major classes they might get harder as time goes on but it's pretty manageable if you just plan out what you want to get done.

    Tips for prospective students

Just check it out! I like ISU because it's in more of a city area and I can virtually walk anywhere if I need something. Everything is close to campus and people are usually nice if you need help or need to ask a question. People around here are generally helpful. If you think you want to go to ISU just go and check it out for yourself to see if you'll like it. I felt like everyone I talked to was generally welcoming.

    In three sentences

Illinois State University is a very diverse campus. The students here are creative. It's a pretty good campus overall.

    Tips for prospective students

Keep your eyes open, opportunity might just come knocking on the door.

    In three sentences

It's a great school, I met a lot of nice friends here as well as dedicated professors. I feel as if this is my home, because everyone is so welcoming here. Although some classes were a bit far from my residence hall and it's hard to walk in the cold, I know it's worth it.

    What to do for fun

It is becoming a harder school to go out at if you aren't 21 since the cops have really been cracking down. On the bright side though there are really amazing people who attend ISU and you won't have any problem meeting people!

    Food and Dining

Really amazing food! Watch out it is easy to gain that freshman 15!

    Dorm Life

Really amazing Resident Assistants! Having them makes it easy and convenient when meeting people on your floor.

    Academic Rigor

Very challenging for Special Education Majors, but I would say that is a good thing! They really want to make sure they push you as hard as you can be.

    Tips for prospective students

It is an amazing school for education majors! I would say there is no need to go anywhere else if that is your intended major.

    In three sentences

Very beautiful school though I feel as if they care more about making money than helping their students succeed.

Great for these types of students

    All.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Festival ISU is a great way to get involved on campus. The Quad gets filled with every organization and department offered in efforts to recruit students. Happens every semester and a great way to network.

    What to do for fun

There is a program in the Student Involvement Center called RSO (Registered Student Organizations). There are over 150 clubs and programs that you can join. If what you are interested in is not offered then you are able to create your own. I myself have created and founded 2 organizations at Illinois State University.

    Tips for prospective students

Develop strong studying skills now because entry level courses for general education are dominantly 3 exams and a final exam to accumulate your grade.

    In three sentences

Provides students with excellent extra-curricular opportunities and strong leadership skills.

    What to do for fun

The school hosts a lot of different events that are really fun to go to. I recommend to try and go to all of them. Its a good way to meet new people.

    Food and Dining

The food at ISU was good. The dining centers were also clean and served a good variety of foods.

    Dorm Life

Living in the dorms were pretty tough. Even though i was an only child for 14 years, i always shared a room with cousins so i was used to living with someone else. But if you are not used to living with someone then it will be somewhat hard to adjust to. You should get to know your roommate as soon as you meet them so you can get a higher comfort level with them.

    Academic Rigor

Academic wise it can be challenging. If you stay on track and manage your time wisely you would pass with flying colors.

    In three sentences

Illinois State was a very good school. There were lots of different activities for students to do and join to always keep a student busy. I think if you are looking for a school it should be ISU.

    Campus Safety

I am comfortable walking around campus at any time. I feel safer here than in my suburb back home, and that says a lot!

    Greek Life

Greek life is huge on campus and provides many students with new brothers and sisters that can build them up and help them out in any situation.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many interesting clubs, and the clubs are so easy to form if you do not find one that fits you.

Great for these types of students

Students who have there priorities set on academics and social growth.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I guess that some unusual locations are the sculptures in the quad that everyone enjoys eating lunch on.

    Bang for the buck

Everything that I have already said pretty much covers this category. But, I can say again that Illinois State University will surpass almost every expectation that you have. Everybody that I know who goes here loves it!

    What to do for fun

There are many events hosted by the university as well as a lot of clubs to get involved with. You do not have to go to a party to have fun, and there are many other productive things that will be fulfilling to you throughout the year.

    Food and Dining

I am very impressed with the food provided by the university. They have a wide variety of cuisine, and most of it is high qualify. Over the course of the year, you will have tried nearly everything, and you will have to eventually get creative with what meals you make.

    Dorm Life

I have no complaints about the dorms. They are spacious and inviting, and are easy to transform in to your home away from home.

    Academic Rigor

Many of the courses offered are difficult, but with the right work ethic, you can receive the grade that you put in the effort for. Many of the classes are very engaging and interesting and will help you retain the information that you have learned long after your class is over.

    Tips for prospective students

My main tip is to constantly get out of your dorm and experience everything that ISU offers! Meet new people, join RSO's, and take time to appreciate the opportunities that you have by giving back to the community.

    In three sentences

Illinois State University is, without a doubt, my home. The beautiful campus, the incredible teachers, the professional and social opportunities, and even Reggie Redbird are just some of the things that constantly remind me how lucky I am to be a student here. I look forward to all the experiences that I have yet to live at ISU, and I know that I will be an extremely proud alumni one day.
