Great for these types of students

This school is greatly for those seeking an academically nurturing environment, while not wanting to become a number to a massive university. City folk are very common, but small town kids won't feel out-of-place. Its a nice blend between the two lifestyles, and gives you room to grow.

    Tips for prospective students

The essays are important, and are your chance to present yourself. If you don't have a lot of life experience they can be hard to write, but there is a reason for that. Wesleyan is looking for the bright and the involved, so those clubs will definitely count too.

    Bang for the buck

Wesleyan is very expensive, but has its reasons. You are paying to live in a small, tight-knit community focused on academic excellence. If you are someone that Wesleyan wants they'll be sure to help you through, which is a major relief. A lot of people say you pay for your University's name on you diploma, and Wesleyan carries a lot of weight with it.

    Am enjoying being here

The sense of community is extremely strong here and I get along with everyone that I live with. It may take a bit of effort to get some people to talk, but everyone here is surprisingly friendly. That includes the frats/sororities.

    Am learning a lot

The starting points for classes are well tailored to your high school work. I was placed onto the Analysis track based on my AP scores, but the new information I was acquiring was similar to my sociology class. I have never taken sociology before, but in both cases I learned an incredible amount of information.

Great for these types of students

Self-motivated, dedicated, inspired, passionate and interested students. This isn't a school to simply go to for four years. It is a four year experience that you need to be ready to take advantage of.

    Tips for prospective students

It is a small school, so represent yourself how you want to be seen at all times. Develop good standing with the faculty you interact with and incredible opportunities will open up for you. Take advantage of the personal small school atmosphere.

    Bang for the buck

Wesleyan on your diploma looks better than a lot of state schools, but it isn't particularly well-known outside of Illinois. If you take advantage of the availability of professors and extra activities, you will get yourself a wonderful education. If you aren't on scholarship and aren't motivated to go above and beyond, Wesleyan will be a waste of money.

    Am enjoying being here

You won't make close friends with just students, but faculty and staff as well. Illinois Wesleyan is a tight knit community with a lot going on for all different types of interest. There is a place for everyone.

    Am learning a lot

The classes are small and involved with impressively bright, qualified professors who have a lot of office hours. There are interesting options for all general requirements and they feel more fun and informative than required.

Great for these types of students

Great for students that love to learn in all aspects of education, love the one on one opportunity with professors, and love getting to know people on a personal level.

    Am enjoying being here

I have made a ton of friends, and it is a fantastic place with lots of opportunites to hang out and meet people. The entertainment and movies they bring in are fantastic and there are a lot of great university sponsored events that happen year round. The music building is especially close, it is like one giant family and there are always people around and everyone, including the professors, care about you.

    Am learning a lot

I am learning an incredible amount as a music education major. I will be one of the most prepared people I know, no matter what the situation I encounter when I graduate and go out into the world. My education outside of the music department has been wonderful as well.

Great for these types of students

IWU is for those students who care about getting a quality education and enjoy learning, and prefer smaller class sizes with more opportunity for one on one instruction. Also, if you want a great community feeling with ample opportunity to get involved in campus life and activities, IWU is perfect.

    Tips for prospective students

Illinois Wesleyan wants well rounded students in their university, so try to diversify your interests and activities. If you haven't had much diversity or life experience, admit to it, but say that is what you are looking for in your college experience.

    Bang for the buck

Illinois Wesleyan is expensive, but the quality of the education you will receive is worth the price of tuition. There are some wonderful professors here that you will be glad you were able to have class with. Not only that, but having the Illinois Wesleyan University name follow you into the job market will be extemely benefical.

    Am enjoying being here

I have met some amazing people here that I know I will have in my life even after we graduate. There are so many opportunites to get involved in clubs, sports, Greek life, musical ensembles etc. IWU campus life makes it easy to meet new people and experience new things. The weekends are never boring, even if that means just hanging in a friend's dorm and watching a movie.

    Am learning a lot

I have had the fortune of already having some wonderful professors that I have learned so much from. Also, I have learned from fellow students through group and in-class work. Not only have I grown academically, but the college experience at IWU in general has helped me to learn about life.

Great for these types of students

    - VERY studious!!! - Want to know a lot of people on a small campus. - Want to be in a college town, but not quite in the middle of one.

    Tips for prospective students

    - Apply early acceptance! - Visit on a prospective student day, but also visit on a random weekday to see what campus is usually like.

    Bang for the buck

There is an event at Hansen student center almost every other weekend and they are things students want to actually go to - like new movies, concerts with popular bands, etc.

    Am enjoying being here

There is so much to be involved with here, and everyone wants to make new friends.

    Academic Rigor

The required gateway is definitely a hit or miss, because some are really easy, and others require more time and effort. Unfortunately, they change every year so there is no way to be forewarned.

    What to do for fun

    Everything is fun.

    Food and Dining

    It has it's days.

    Dorm Life

    Don't room with a friend.

    Academic Rigor

    College is hard.

    Tips for prospective students

Begin to be independent and think for yourself now, soon it's all up to you to take care of yourself and if you aren't ready it's a shock.

    In three sentences

I love everything a small university has to offer coming from small private catholic schools my whole life. Freedom is the greatest! Just don't over do it.

    Campus Safety

The campus is small and security is always around so it is a pretty safe campus. There is also a free shuttle service from 10pm to 2am so they will take you home if you do not want to walk home.

    Greek Life

The greek life is pretty big for the size of the school. If you want, I would say to give Greek life a try, because it is pretty cool to get to know others in a more deeper level.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a lot of different clubs on campus. There are over 300 different registered student events. I would get involve with a few and do a lot with those few clubs.

Great for these types of students

This school is great of Pre-med school. The students are good at studying one their own and can create their own deadlines so they are no procrastinating.

    Bang for the buck

The school is really expensive, but give a lot of academic scholarships and even more need based scholarships.

    What to do for fun

The social life on campus is great also. Everyone is friendly meeting new people is really easy. There are bars that are only a couple blocks away for those who are 21 and over. There is also a greek life which also helps give it the bigger college feel in a smaller university. There is a mall near by, multiple movie theaters and a lot of places to eat.

    Food and Dining

The campus food is pretty good. They make various different cuisines which is a nice change of pace. The menu changes daily but there is always burgers, pizza, pasta and salad available.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are pretty big, especially for the upperclassmen. Everyone is every social able and friendly. You will make new friends every quickly. The R.A.'s are also very nice and friendly and can help out with almost any situation.

    Academic Rigor

Classes can get pretty difficult and intense. You will learn a lot but will also have to put in a lot of time and effort studying the material. While the classes may be difficult, professors are alway willing to help you out and try to get you best grade possible, but you must also put in your own time and effort in order for you get a good grade.

    Tips for prospective students

There also a lot of internship and research opportunities that are given, which will help you in reaching your future goals and give you hands on experience as well. If you can try and get one, it will help you out in the future a lot. Also the career center can do a lot for you. As a freshmen I would go and start talking to the career advisors and utilize the career center as much as possible. They can do a lot for you. Also meet with your professors a much as possible. The better they know you, the more they will be willing to help you out and even give you research opportunities or other opportunities.

    In three sentences

The professors are very knowledge and are easy to approach and ask for help or even just to talk to and give you guidance. There are a variety of different class for every major and many of the seminar class are small so you get know everyone as well as the professor, which is a good thing. The overall location and campus of the school is nice and beautiful. It is small enough that you don't need to walk much to get to one class to another, but big enough of a campus that it still feels like any other university. The buildings and classroom are very nice and comfortable to study. The library is pretty and very nice inside.

The food options were great last time I visited.

    Dorm Life

All of their dorm buildings look nice and I love the lounges that they all have.

    Academic Rigor

IWU had courses that some of my other options didn't.

    In three sentences

I can't wait to start going to IWU. It seems like a great place and I love the environment.

    Campus Safety

While a majority of the security guards on campus are older gentlemen, the campus as a whole is fairly safe if one is smart. There are the occasional incidents, and sometimes a rash of thefts, but if you are smart about your personal decisions and keep an eye on your belongings it is a safe, tightly knit campus.

Great for these types of students

Great for theatre and nursing students. If you like a challenge, if you want to learn, if you like exploring.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There are several cement patches on campus commonly referred to as hot spots. These areas are warm year-round due to plumbing underground. They make for delightful seating areas, especially in the evening. Atop McPherson Theatre, there is a giant head which was placed there as a prank but has been accepted and integrated to campus life.

    What to do for fun

Greek life holds the most activities on campus, but there are a plethora of other organizations on campus that offer activities in the evenings and on the weekends.

    Tips for prospective students

Know what you want and what you are looking for in a school. If you want to be a person and not a number, try looking at smaller schools.

    In three sentences

The school offers many opportunities that other schools do not, including but not limited to, study abroad and assistance finding internships. The staff and faculty genuinely care for their students as individuals and not just as a number. The curriculum is academically rigorous but not impossible.

    Greek Life

1/3 of kids participate. You aren't neglected if you don't take part in greek life, it's still very fun.

Great for these types of students

Kids looking for a fun college experience while still getting a great education. School-focused kids who still enjoy the party!

    What to do for fun

Bloomington-Normal is more than a farm town; there is so much going on. Great restaurants and nightlife. School parties are very fun too.

    Tips for prospective students

This isn't a 24/7 party school. Academics are important to a majority of students. There is still plenty of fun with a great focus on schoolwork.

    In three sentences

The school has a rigorous but rewarding academic curriculum. There are numerous internship opportunities to advance oneself and build a resume. There's a great balance of social life and schoolwork.

    Greek Life

33% so it is not only huge but really fun and the GPA is usually higher than the school average.

Great for these types of students

Nerdy and social, or not terribly social, but high achieving, highly involved students.

    Bang for the buck

$$$ but for a great reason.

    What to do for fun

For a nerdy and small school, there are parties thursday through sunday, every week, and a small fun bar scene down town off campus.

    Food and Dining

Great food, most of the time. Better than most schools I would say.

    Dorm Life

All dorms have AC and off campus living is close and pretty nice.

    Tips for prospective students

Go visit the campus, you'll fall in love.

    In three sentences

    Expensive, but worth it.

    What to do for fun

There are many things to do for fun around the Bloomington-Normal area, and just on campus. Greek Life always has things to do. There are many events at Hansen Student Center for people who want non-alcoholic activities. And there are 2 movie theaters, ice skating, and many more things to do in the area!

    Food and Dining

There are only a couple dining options at IWU, and some are good, some aren't as good. I personally love eating at Tommy's and The Dugout over Saga. Saga is good sometimes, both others it is absolutely terrible.

    Dorm Life

The residence halls are fairly new. For freshman dorms, the rooms are a little small- depending on which hall you choose. You normally get placed in your first choice, but if you don't you will definitely get placed in your second.

    Academic Rigor

In every class I have been challenged intellectually. If you want a school that you can just breeze right through, Wesleyan is definitely not for you. All of the professors expect 200% effort from every student. If you are struggling most professors are more than happy to help as long as you ask for it.

    Tips for prospective students

If your GPA and ACT scores are lower, be sure to get involved in extra curricular activities!!

    In three sentences

Illinois Wesleyan is a great school if you want to intellectually challenge yourself. The campus is beautiful and the Bloomington-Normal area always has things to do.

    Campus Safety

You could do worse. Campus security is always out making sure no one gets into too much trouble. There is the occasional incident, but most often those occur off campus when partying gets out of hand or in the surrounding neighborhoods (which honestly are a bit sketchy).

    Greek Life

Way better than stereotypes would tell you! The people in Greek life tend to have better grades, better connections, and better opportunities after graduation. Even if you don't plan on joining, go through rush--you'll make friends that will last throughout your 4 years regardless of whether or not you end up as a greek!

    Clubs and Activities

There's so much to choose from and it's really easy to make your own club if you want to!

Great for these types of students

Friendly, open-minded, and outgoing! The students who want to do clubs, sports, be social, AND love learning often do the best at IWU.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Make friends with the Greeks--they have really fun traditions that are more about being silly and having a good time than stereotypes would make you think!

    Bang for the buck

Very expensive and by senior year students are normally angry about how much they have spent.

    What to do for fun

There's something for everyone. Parties, greek life, sporting events, hanging out on the quad--the only way not to have fun on this campus is to shut yourself in your room and be antisocial!

    Food and Dining

You either love it or you hate it--but there are lots of options like a sub shop, a diner, and traditional cafeteria.

    Dorm Life

Be HONEST on your roommate questionnaires! If you stay up late, say so! If you wake up to go to practice at 5 am, say that too! You'll eventually end up with the best match. PS Your roommate is someone you need to live with all year--you don't need to be best friends but definitely bond during your first few weeks!

    Academic Rigor

The class level is definitely tough, but the teachers are helpful and normally try really hard to make lectures interesting. Take subjects that you WANT to take, and always keep an eye on your graduation plans: senior year comes sooner than you think!

    Tips for prospective students

Stay on top of your work, but have a life too! Even as early as your pre-admission interview, counselors are looking for well-balanced students. So emphasize the diversity of your high school activities and interests!

    In three sentences

IWU is a great match for anyone looking for a high quality liberal arts education that has a great balance of social life and academics. It has the benefits of a small school's resources, such as small class sizes and really helpful professors while also offering the resources of a college town. It's an awesome place to go to college!

    What to do for fun

There are a ton of things to do for fun, from intramural sports to sporting events *division 3 athletics are not the biggest crowd bringers but football and basketball are fun to go to and its also good to cheer on your team*, musicals or plays are always interesting to say the least and there is always the night life for those who enjoy that type of thing. You will not be disappointed yes it is a small school but the small school has a big school feel.

    Food and Dining

I worked for Dugout *an alternative for your regular buffet style cafeteria food* so i have a little bias in this statement. The cafeteria food is were everyone will go the first few weeks because they wont know anything else until they start to branch out to places like Tommy's *a bar and grill style restaurant that is included in your meal plan* or Dugout *also included in meal plan* but it is good for the most part until you eat there too often like i did and got tired of it eventually. Tommy's is a good place to go for weekends and sporting days but Dugout is a place to go to get Subway style sandwiches or wraps and is much healthier than anything else *if you prepare your meal correctly*. You can avoid the freshman 15 if you know how to eat correctly and were to eat.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life, well its a lot better than it would be if you were stuck at a state school Munsell hall has the smallest rooms on campus followed by Fergusan but you cant complain about them. The best hall to live in is Harriet Fuller Rust dorm which is an entire dorm building for suites ranging from 4-8 person suites, they have the biggest dorms and is among the newest on campus. Overall you can not go wrong with any dorm you choose as long as you know how to arrange your room correctly.

    Academic Rigor

Illinois Wesleyan is among one of the most best schools for a reason, they are tough and know what they are teaching you and most of the time its the actual professor not a TA. As hard as it is though there is always someone who can help you whether it is a tutor, a fellow classmate, a TA, or even the professor himself someone is always available to help you with your struggles.

    Tips for prospective students

Avoid the freshman 15/20/30 because its very real. Also if you attend this school it will be the best 4 years of your life. make sure you get into dorms such as Dolan or Gulick those tend to be bigger rooms and more sociable as well. Some colleges say that their professors are always available but are really not, Illinois Wesleyan is not one of those schools, the professors are always available and will help you no matter what. Oh and if you are attending please tell your friend to ask the older lady for the ice cream handle during breakfast (this is a form to break the ice, or have a nice joke of course)

    In three sentences

The best choice i ever made scholastically, financially, and socially. Illinois Wesleyan offers one of the best educations in the state of Illinois and not only there but in the entire country and i fell in love with it the minute i walked on campus. Illinois Wesleyan has one of the best financial programs in the country, basically if they want you you will get help i am only paying about 10% of the actual cost of the school. Even though Wesleyan is considered a small school it has a huge network, a lot of businesses have either heard of the greatness of the school or have employees, brothers, mothers or someone they know who has gone to Wesleyan and has benefited from going to IWU.

    What to do for fun

As an introvert, I found plenty of entertainment in my relatively small circle of friends, and we rarely ever went out.

    Food and Dining

The food provided in the commons area is pretty good, and they have a large buffet-style selection. There are also quite a few options around town, if you're interested.

    Dorm Life

My freshman year I happened to find myself living in Gulick Hall, which, unknown to me at the time, was considered the worst hall to live in. Stay away!

    Academic Rigor

Varies with the professor, but in general the math and science courses are the most difficult, whereas languages, composition, and social sciences courses are a bit less taxing, but still rigorous enough to be considered difficult by some students. The requisite class for all freshman (Gateway) is a complete waste of time, as it assumes you are illiterate.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you check the general education requirements, and make sure you transfer whatever credits you've already received prior to enrolling. And if you can, try to sign up for a room in any residence hall but Gulick.

    In three sentences

There are many well-accredited faculty members. The environment is pretty inviting. Small student body may make course selection inconvenient.

    Campus Safety

The campus has blue light alarms spread throughout campus for any emergencies, not that you'll need them. Security also patrols at night, again, another unneeded precaution. The only threat to yourself on this campus is you.

    Greek Life

Greek Life dominates the social life at Wesleyan, generally throwing all the parties. Joining is a great opportunity to meet friends and upperclassman who can help you out by guiding you through the ins and outs of the school. You'll learn leadership skills since the fraternities and sororities are run completely by the members themselves. I'm a member of the TKE chapter there, and it's easily one of the best decisions of my life.

    Clubs and Activities

If there's a club you want to join, it's there. If not, create it. With the small size of Illinois Wesleyan you'll have the chance to be more involved and actually make an impact on the club you're working in.

Great for these types of students

Illinois Wesleyan is perfect for smart students who aren't pretentious, but integrate their learning into everyday conversation. These students are able to relax when necessary and work hard when they don't have that luxury.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The hot spot is the perfect place to just chill (pun intended), You can relax there even in the winter as it's a concrete bed that's heated by the school's water. At night, the stars are visible and it's nice to just lay back relaxing after a long day of classes.

    Bang for the buck

Illinois Wesleyan tends to give good scholarships to their incoming students. The problem is afterwards (the next year), the price increases. It doesn't drastically increase (about $300 more per month), but it can still take a toll for those of us who can't afford any increase.

    What to do for fun

It's a small town, so there isn't much to do. On one hand that frees you from distractions, on the other you're left with little to do besides party with friends and go to the occasional concert. There is ISU just down the street, so take full advantage of that.

    Food and Dining

The food is of decent quality, easily a six out of ten. However, there are only about three places to eat at which becomes boring quickly. The other problem is that after ten, no place is open.

    Dorm Life

As a freshman you'll be put in tiny rooms, unless you get Dolen. Afterwards though, your room size will be twice the size and, especially by last year's comparison, great to live in.

    Academic Rigor

It really depends on your major. Unless your a bio major, Freshman year should be a breeze. Afterwards it becomes progressively harder, but remember if anyone could get your degree, it wouldn't be worth much.

    Tips for prospective students

Bring snacks and fridge: when the dining halls are closed and you're still hungry, you'll need something to eat.

    In three sentences

A close knit community that gives you the room and resources to grow, Illinois Wesleyan challenges you academically, yet allows you the free time to explore and learn outside of academics. With classmates from other parts of the globe and a liberal arts curriculum, you'll step outside of your comfort zone at some time or another. The time will fly by, but it'll be some of the best, and most worthwhile, years of your life.

    Campus Safety

security drives/walks around campus late at night. If you are studying late at night in the library, students can call titan transport to drop them off at their dorms.

    Greek Life

A majority of the student body participates in Greek Life. They have many activities to participate in. But it is not a big deal if one does not participate in Greek life.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs to choose from and many great ones too. The school has many many activities that most of the students do not leave campus. It is said that the campus is a bubble because students do not leave campus due to the many activities the school has to offer.

    What to do for fun

I go to many of the school's activites (some of which are concerts), club activities and go to near movie theaters.

    Food and Dining

Many options to choose from and every option is delicious. The food is easy accessible because every dining room that the campus has is spread out on campus.

    Dorm Life

Dorms are very clean, descent size and very private. The lounges are comfy, an amazing location to study late at night or to hangout with friends. The kitchens in the dorm buildings are accessible and clean.

    Academic Rigor

Many options too choose from and a lot of the courses are challenging.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you STUDY STUDY STUDY and go to professor's office hours. It is a small campus therefore be active in school and you will have an enjoyable time.

    In three sentences

It is a comforting environment/campus, the students, professors and faculty are very welcoming and are willing to help at any day and/or time. The food on campus is very tasty, we have many options from junk food to healthy food, and the cooks in the dining hall are very good. The courses are very challenging but you learn a lot of things to know in the real world.

    Campus Safety

Security is a constant presence at IWU. From the locked doors of every dorm to the no questions asked policy for a late night pick-up any student should feel secure based on the high quality of safety.

    Clubs and Activities

An organization can be found at IWU for anyone and if that certain club/activity hasn't been discovered yet then creating that group and getting a sponsor is the next step. IWU is always looking for improvement.

Great for these types of students

Students who enjoy being pushed to consider new ideas and enjoy the growth experienced from these discoveries will love Illinois Wesleyan University. If you are looking for a small school where you become a person and not simply a number then IWU is the place for you!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Hot spots are located throughout the quad of the university that are great places for social gatherings on a crisp Fall night. Surrounded by hot cocoa, friends and great experiences...doesn't get much better than that.

    Bang for the buck

Wesleyan schools are spread across the United States making the branches well known. Through this opens up many opportunities to graduates. This is seen most often through successful stories from graduates of the School of Business, School of Music, School of Nursing and School of Art.

    What to do for fun

Many activities are to be found off campus at the many stores, restaurants or seasonal festivals that take place in Bloomington-Normal. On campus there are often performances on Fridays and Saturday nights either put on by the extraordinary Performing Arts School or by performers brought in by IWU. Also, the many athletic teams are victorious in their events and so an exciting game is sure to be seen at some point during the weekend. Other than the previous two activities various events take place to ensure the students are constantly capable of finding new passions that create a growing and intriguing environment through social activities.

    Food and Dining

There are three main locations for campus provided dining. Sodexo Hall is the typical college cafeteria with numerous options from Oriental to American style nourishment, choices for any specified needs such as lactose free or vegetarian are made available. Tommy's is similar to what would be considered a campus grill. Finally, The Dugout is well known for the delicious sub-sandwiches and on-the-go items to be enjoyed during a quick study break or snack before a game of ultimate frisbee on the quad. There are also two coffee shops stocked with Seattle's Best and Starbucks beverages for the many caffeine cravers found at IWU.

    Dorm Life

The faculty goes through each students residential life survey and matches two undergraduates that will room together most effectively, this method often works perfectly. Also, the dorms have information desks that are open the majority of the day and staffed with someone who will answer questions or provide mail and other informational handouts. Residence halls also host varying events such as ice cream socials or speed dating between floors. Overall the communities are welcoming and well thought out from the dorm room to the numerous lounges fully equipped with kitchen supplies or Baby Grand pianos.

    Academic Rigor

Time management is key when it comes to school work. A forty hour minimum study week is expected outside of classes, however if willing to schedule the time distinctly, leaving time for eating and sleeping, then there will still be 80 hours of free time to be done with however each student sees fit. As the classes are smaller a student will get a personal relationship with the teacher which takes maintenance but will be worth it by the end of the undergraduate experience.

    Tips for prospective students

Be ready to become someone willing to try anything. If you are not prepared to go all the way on this journey the learning experience will be drastically less thrilling and you will not feel challenged or get the true college experience that every student wishes for. Outgoing is what you must aim for.

    In three sentences

Illinois Wesleyan University gets a letter grade of an A. It provides endless resources which are often found with the professors whom are energetic and caring people with vasts amount of knowledge willingly shared with students prepared to live up to the high expectations placed upon them at this university. Also the never ending list of registered student organizations ensures that every attendee will find a group/ activity creating a home away from home bond that attracts so many to the environment experienced at IWU.

If you stay in your program IWU is known to be a rigorous school and your education will take you places.

    What to do for fun

The Hansen Student Center puts on activities every single weekend. Whether it's a band, entertainer, a movie night or an activity night for the entire school, there it always something to do. Bloomington has a TON of restaurants to eat at and the public transportation system gets you around on $1 so there are always places to explore.

    Food and Dining

Wesleyan offers a large variety of options that cater to every student. There are 5 places to eat- Saga (main cafeteria), the Dugout (a walk through pick-your-own-food), the coffee shop (serves Starbucks coffee and snacks), Tommy's (a sit down restaurant feel area), and Hattie's (a coffee shop and snack place similar to the coffee shop). All places cater to vegetarians and vegans. Saga has a different menu of food on certain stations every single day. The food is just cafeteria food, but the variety keeps you eating new food!

    Dorm Life

Most of the dorms are somehow connected by a common lounge area so there is a lot of opportunities to meet new people! Everyone is also really friendly, just walking around people say hi to each other, even if they don't know one another.

    Academic Rigor

    Campus Safety

Illinois Wesleyan takes all the standard safety precautions and has never felt like a threatening place.

    Greek Life

About 30% of the students are Greek, so it plays a big part in the social atmosphere of the school. However, students who choose not to go Greek are still welcome at Fraternity houses and most Fraternity and Sorority events.

Great for these types of students

It is perfect for hardworking and motivated students who value their education and are willing to take an extra step to take advantage of resources like research opportunities or unique study abroad programs that will push them ahead in their careers.

    Bang for the buck

Illinois Wesleyan's tuition is expensive, but they do offer lots of financial assistance and I couldn't imagine a better education anywhere else. For students who truly want to learn and excel in their field, Illinois Wesleyan is the best option. I am always amazed at the lengths my professors and advisers will go to make sure I can fit all classes and study abroad opportunities into my 4-year plan in order to make me a marketable candidate for graduate schools or to begin my career. I believe this shows that Illinois Wesleyan is willing to go the extra mile for students, which is an invaluable characteristic in an undergraduate university.

    What to do for fun

The campus is located within a walkable distance from Downtown Bloomington and Uptown Normal, which offer plenty of shops to peruse and fun places to grab a bite to eat or some coffee. On campus, there is always something going on in the Hansen Center so students can have a movie night together, enjoy student artwork, or participate in fun game shows and contests.

    Food and Dining

For such a small campus, it is surprising how many options students have to choose from in terms of restaurants and the dining hall. The food is good, and management does a good job paying attention to needs of students with alternative diets and allergies.

    Dorm Life

Dorms offer an amazing community feel and the residential advisers are a great resource for freshman to meet new friends upon starting their first year of college. The dorms themselves are spacious and clean.

    Academic Rigor

Illinois Wesleyan's reputation as a good school is not baseless; students are expected to put in the effort necessary to excel in school, which can be difficult but is ultimately very rewarding.

    Tips for prospective students

Take advantage of the resources available to you! Professors and advisers are always more than willing to make themselves available to help, and go to great lengths to offer unique opportunities to students willing to work for them.

    In three sentences

Illinois Wesleyan takes pride in the attention professors and advisers give to students. It is a place where students can reach their fullest potential, and we are encouraged to challenge ourselves. It is a community that cultivates excellence.

    Campus Safety

Bloomington is a very safe place, and students on Wesleyan's campus can see three different emergency light stations from anywhere on campus, so no matter where students are on campus they are always near a station in case they need help for any reason. Campus security will escort students from academic buildings to residence halls during the nighttime hours if they are studying late and do not feel comfortable walking to their dorms alone.

    Greek Life

Although Wesleyan is a small university Greek Life has established its presence for years, with 1/3 of the student population participating. This means IWU has a lot of members in the Greek Community, but if fraternities and sororities are not your thing, you are definitely not left out! Students in Greek Life are just like other students, and there is no crazy drama between fraternities or sororities.

    Clubs and Activities

There is literally a club for everything. There are academic clubs, clubs for activism, athletics, clubs for volunteering, spiritual clubs, media clubs, fine arts, musical, and cultural clubs. If we do not have a club it is in the students' power to create a new one.

Great for these types of students

Literally everyone. If students are set on what they want or if they come in with an undeclared major, students of all ethnic backgrounds, athletes and musical geniuses, students that are unsure if they prefer a big or small university (since Wesleyan is neighbors with Illinois State University students are able to experience the best of both worlds).

    What to do for fun

Illinois Wesleyan makes a point of having activities not only over the weekends but during the week as well. Students can always find a movie screening, a dance, a comedian, a concert or talent show, and even game shows. If IWU faculty and staff is not in charge of some event, there is always a registered student organization providing entertainment for the student body. There are cookouts and student concerts, athletic activities, and volunteer opportunities. The activities are endless at Wesleyan, students will sometimes have to choose which activities to attend!

    Food and Dining

No campus food experience is perfect, but Wesleyan food is definitely the best among the other colleges that students visit. IWU has it all, pizza, pasta, burgers, chicken, mashed potatoes, corn and other veggie favorites, as well as asian cuisine and a variety of desserts and ice cream. Make sure to keep a lookout for IWU's incredible ice cream bars which include the create-your-own or the ice cream that comes with caramelized bananas! Students also do not want to miss the chocolate fountain or Sunday Brunch, which has students waking up early on a weekend just to get a taste of personal omelettes, Belgian waffles, fresh fruit, and much much more. The amazing Saga Dave makes sure that our Thanksgiving and Valentines Day dinners are memorable by creating an atmosphere similar to fancy restaurant, fully equipped with themed foods and goodies. Wesleyan also has outdoor picnics with free food, as well as breakfast-at-night events. One of the favorites is definitely Carnival Night, where students are served up carnival-style food such as chicken strips, hot dogs, burgers, fries, funnel cake, ice cream, popcorn, cotton candy, and snow cones. IWU even hires balloon artists from Funbelievable Balloons to create anything the students' inner child desires.

    Dorm Life

The RAs do an excellent job of easing students into their halls. Floors and even entire halls come together for different activities that their hall councils hold. Students tend to become very good friends with other students in the same residence halls rather quickly, which always makes for a more pleasant experience.

    Academic Rigor

Material covered in each course and expectations are very clear and appropriate based on the level. Even a 100 level course will quickly teach students to be organized and responsible. Although classes are rigorous, they are doable if students keep up with the material and study, a lot. By the end of freshman year students' research skills drastically improve.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not be afraid to explore, whether it be a class, a sport, or a club. Illinois Wesleyan has so much to offer, way more than one would expect from a private university. Take your classes seriously the first semester so you won't be behind second semester; IWU's classes are not to be taken lightly but can be a joyful learning experience if you keep up. Don't be afraid to go to Shirk, an incredibly high percentage of students work out, even if they are not competing for Wesleyan. Embrace the variety that Wesleyan encourages. Major props to my small, private university of a little over 2000 students for collaborating with students and expanding new ideas whose origins are in places other than the United States. Take risks! No matter what you believe, students can still be shy even in their college years. Speak up, stand up, and work towards the change you wish to bring forth in your community. Another thing about community, the Bloomington-Normal community provides endless volunteer opportunities, take advantage of those to expand your horizons!

    In three sentences

The pearl of the Bloomington-Normal community. My first and only choice; a home away from home. A genuine life experience full of self discovery, opportunities to develop leadership skills, and a rigorous course schedule to keep you on your toes, with a campus community comparable to your own family; a true college experience that I wouldn't have any other way.

    Campus Safety

Always have company. You can never be too safe. Even though this campus feels extremely safe, you never know what may happen. You must stay extra careful and be cautious of your own actions. There are plenty of lines around this campus that whenever needed, it is right there like a magical box. Even though it may seem as though you are alone, you are not (sounds a little creepy). What I mean is that you are surrounded by people that you can get help from whenever needed. Trust me though, you hardly need to call for that kind of help. You are mostly safe, just know that the help is there whenever needed.

    Bang for the buck

Be extra careful on how you spend your money. You do not want to blow it all up and spend so much on things you want to get rather than what you may need. Other thing to keep in mind, save your money. You could save so much and maybe later buy yourself a car, or you could gather friends and rent an apartment.

    What to do for fun

Go out and mingle. There are events every single day going on. You get a weekly email telling you what is going to happen, what time, and where. I think this is really wonderful because you not only learn outside of the classroom, but you connect with other people. Plus, we usually have crazy fun filled events by the end of the week. An incredible example: Many of us went to go watch the new hunger games movie catching fire. Sadly, I missed it. It was free, and all you had to do was sign up. I thought that was one huge incredible event, along with the 3OH3! concert that I went to see in our gym.

    Food and Dining

Vegetables, fruits, and protein. This college is along side with sodexo. I think that speaks for itself. The food is healthy. Not a lot of students may like it because of the missing greasy and unhealthy foods, but it is by far going to shed pounds rather than gain them.

    Dorm Life

You have choices here and there, but sometimes there are points where you must put up with a horrible room mate. Maybe you don't like the hall you live in? It is ultimately up to you on how you view the dorm life. In my perspective, I think it is great. All you have to do is make it feel like home, and you are good to go.

    Academic Rigor

It is just as great as any other college. There are many professors that are wonderful, but there are professors that are not always the best. At that point it becomes up to you to start teaching yourself and paying close attention. There are so many office hours, tutoring, and peer groups to help. There is no need to feel alone when you feel like you are failing or having a hard time. Everyone experiences the stress at some point.

    Tips for prospective students

Get ahead and make sure you understand what it means to schedule, plan, and organize. Let yourself have fun but not too much. It is always a perfect thing for students to get ahead and start to let themselves be involved. It let's connctions understand that the student is professional and ready to face the real world.

    In three sentences

It is a university that will continue making me think outside of my box, even if it is such a small campus. This school has so much potential to bring out every kind of leader in our world. I know I will be a leader when I graduate.

    What to do for fun

We're in Bloomington Normal - which is a pretty good town. We have a couple concert venues and plenty of places to eat. Also ISU is about a mile away so there are college students everywhere.

    Food and Dining

Freshman 15 is pretty common due to the food here. The dugout was just renovated which added a lot of better options.

    Dorm Life

    Academic Rigor

Biology is very intense, but professors are always there to help you out. Business is somewhat less rigorous.

    Tips for prospective students

Ask for more money, they'll probably give it to you.
