Tuition, Cost & Aid

Affordability and Cost

Average Net Price Average net price for full-time, first-time degree/certificate-seeking undergraduates paying the in-state or in-district tuition rate who were awarded grant or scholarship aid from federal, state or local governments, or the institution. Other sources of grant aid are excluded. Aid awarded anytime during the full aid year is included.

Average net price is generated by subtracting the average amount of federal, state or local government, or institutional grant and scholarship aid from the total cost of attendance. Total cost of attendance is the sum of published tuition and required fees (lower of in-district or in-state), books and supplies and the weighted average room and board and other expenses.

Additional Costs
Room and Board The weighted average for room and board and other expenses is generated as follows:
  • (amount for on-campus room, board and other expenses * # of students living on-campus.
  • + amount for off-campus (with family) room, board and other expenses * # of students living off-campus with family
  • + amount for off-campus (not with family) room, board and other expenses * # of students living off-campus not with family)
divided by the total # of students. Students whose living arrangements are unknown are excluded from the calculation. For some institutions the # of students by living arrangement will be known, but dollar amounts will not be known. In this case the # of students with no corresponding dollar amount will be excluded from the denominator.

What Students Are Saying

Iowa State is a really great school, but it is quite expensive for the out-of-staters. But I would suggest that you really consider you're major and also visit the campus to see if you like the feel of it. Personally I think the campus is absolutely beautiful, and not at all what I expected Iowa to look like. So I would say that if the school strongly represents your intended major and if you think the campus is as beautiful as I do, then Iowa State may just be the place for you.
Jennifer from Shoreview, MN
Tuition is a hefty load on out-of-staters, and if you're an engineering major, your tuition goes up after two years. There are scholarships available, along with $5600 and $7000 packages for those not from Iowa (very easy criteria apply). Overall, the facilities are nice. Engineers and design majors get to enjoy brand new additions and buildings, and there's also a new chemistry building going up. To paraphrase, the equipment, opportunities, and experience offered by Iowa State make it great for the price.
Nick from River Falls, WI
Compared to private colleges, Iowa State is pretty cheap. But it can be a pretty hefty price for students when it is compared to tuition rates at community colleges or when the prospective student is an out-of-stater. However, Iowa State does try to make it easier on out-of-staters by offering scholarships that specifically pertain to them. They also offer academic scholarships and financial aid for students from Iowa.
Kalynn from Davenport, IA
Iowa State is very expensive. I am an out-of-state student and am very concerned about having to transfer if either one of my parents lose their job or if tuition continues to rise. However, I feel like almost every dollar I spend here is worth what I'm getting out of it, otherwise I wouldn't be here. There are a lot of little fees that they charge you for but if you get involved with a lot of things on campus you can get something out of every dollar you are charged.
Nathan from Stewartville, MN
It was cheaper for me to go out of state than to stay in state.
Monica from Naperville, IL
I'm out of state and I think the tuition is pretty reasonable as an out of stater. Make sure you submit financial aid and get scholarships. Otherwise it's pretty great financial aid and plenty of scholarships to win.
