Great for these types of students

Great for students who are academically motivated, but don't want to study your brains out (like kids at UVA). For students who are looking for a great social life and academic life at the same time. For students who are ready to be social and mingle with all the people at JMU- a very social school! Get ready to play hard, study hard, and gain the freshman 15!!!

    Tips for prospective students

JMU is great. Again, a very underrated school that needs recognition. A high retention rate; you'll love it and definitely enjoy your 4 years in Harrisonburg. You don't want to go to VCU because it won't feel like a college campus. You don't want to go to Virginia Tech because let's face it- it's the most overrated school in Virginia. Yeah, it has good football, but when it comes down to it, that's all it has. You don't want to go to Mason because it's such a huge commuter school, therefore the social life isn't as great. You don't want to go to UVA, for lots of reasons. So, COME TO JMU!

    Bang for the buck

Tuition for in-state is currently set at $3,622. I would say that's pretty amazing for the academics, events the school puts on, and free sports games. Definitely a bang for your buck!!! The only thing I can say that is overpriced is the meal plan. Only freshman are required to participate in a meal plan, which is usually around $1,600 per semester. BUT JMU's food is #5 in the nation, and it really is great. I live off-campus this year, but still participate in a meal plan because I love campus food. Just make sure that once you live off-campus, when purchasing a meal plan, get it all in dining dollars. The punch plan really punches your pockets.

    Am enjoying being here

JMU has a special aura about it. It's the friendliest town (Harrisonburg, VA) and you can feel the spirit as soon as you veer off of exit 245 off of interstate 81. The people are great, the social life is great, sports are great (if you can accept that you're not at a Division I school), and it's a place where you can definitely balance your social and academic life (so long as you choose not to make the typical freshman mistake of drinking until you realize you are on academic probation).

    Am learning a lot

I know it's impossible to be unbiased about JMU as a student there, but I really do believe that JMU is the most underrated school in Virginia. The academics are overshadowed by its rival, Virginia Tech, who is rumored to be the better school but the academics at JMU are superb. Professors really care (for the most part; there are always exceptions to the rule), and a lot of them, from my experience, like to engage in discussions. Lots of studying going on in the libraries and in Showker (the business building). I'm definitely learning a lot! Nothing like high school!!!

Great for these types of students

Students who want to enjoy their next four years. If you know what major you want or don't then that's fine, you have quite a while to decide and quite a few majors to choose from. There is diversity also. The only problem is that JMU does suffer from a bit of grade inflation, so if you're looking to end up being a lawyer or something who stands out from the rest, you may want to look into another college. You may still want to come here, but you'd have to engage yourselves in quite a variety of extracurricular activities I should assume, which JMU has a lot of.

    Tips for prospective students

I thought location meant nothing. It does. I thought party life meant nothing. It does. One sounds good; one doesn't. The atmosphere and location around JMU make for a great life around JMU. You will enjoy it here. The problem is, is that there is a pretty big party life here, and if that is not for you then I'd still recommend coming here, providing you have the power to say no.

    Bang for the buck

Normal priced but it offers everything. And hey, if not, there are plenty of job opportunities around. Some job fairs come to the college as well as job pamphlets through the mail. I got a job within two months of being there. Just watch out for the Vector Marketing scam.

    Am enjoying being here

This is a great campus. Right size, right people, and the right locations nearby. You can't have a car first year on campus but you don't need it. Nowhere is farther than a 15 minute walk. Also, sunsets and snow make for beautiful landscapes, and you will find that that does mean a lot when you end up spending four years of your life at whichever college you go to.

    Am learning a lot

I started off with five luck-of-the-draw classes. They were all challenging and all required a lot of work but I never really had to push myself. However, my grades weren't the highest of any of my classes either. JMU has a great college atmosphere and you just have to be wary that it doesn't take away from your work ethic.

Great for these types of students

James Madison University is really great for a student that's looking to get involved and receive a well-rounded education. Students are challenged by the classes, and forced to really work for their grades. So if you're up to it, you'll receive a great education at a great school.

    Tips for prospective students

Definitely tour the campus and get a feel for yourself. Get a good idea about what the dorms look like, because a lot of them are amazing, but some aren't so great. Pick your roommate, trust me. Having a bad roommate (really at any college) can change your whole living situation. Don't buy a printer, it's only five cents at the library and you aren't printing novels so it's cheaper that way.

    Bang for the buck

In-state tuition is set at $3,622.00 and out-of-state tuition is $9,688.00. When compared to other out-of-state prices, it could be a lot worse! The food is expensive, but well worth it! The bus system is free and very necessary.

    Am enjoying being here

I love it so much here, I can't imagine being at any other college. I've really enjoyed the people, specifically. The people on my hall are all very close and I was able to make many friends easily. Word of advice: Pick your roommate. You never know who you'll end up with. I ended up with a beginner alcoholic that thought it was okay to pre-game in our room two times a week. Even if you don't know the person amazingly well that you've decided to room with, you're better off. As a disclosure, some people love their randomly-chosen roommates, so don't let my experience be the end-all-be-all of situations.

    Am learning a lot

JMU has an amazing General Education program that all incoming students must complete. The program is great because it really ensures that you're getting a well-rounded education and that you're gaining exposure to many different fields of study. For example, I'm a Nursing major and I ended up taking an Art History class that focused on Renaissance to Modern art. I was blown away by the class, which was something I never thought was possible. I found something new that interested me and learned a great deal about art in the process. The program is useful for students who haven't declared a major, too, because they gain exposure to many realms of study.

    Campus Safety

The campus police are amazing here. I've never felt like I was in any danger. All around campus they have call boxes set up so that if you feel like you're in danger, you just press the button and the campus police will come to you. Also, campus is very well lit, so even at night you can see everything.

    Clubs and Activities

The clubs here are amazing. Every semester the university holds Student Org Night which is an event for all of the organizations on campus to come and present to students what they're all about. With over 3,000 organizations, anyone can find something that interests them. Even if you don't find anything, you can start an organization yourself!

Great for these types of students

James Madison is great for anyone who wants to get a good education and have fun doing so. Anyone who comes here can see that this is the most spirited campus, full of friendly and outgoing people. So, if you want to be a part of a very tightly knitted community and have a ton of school spirit, this is the place for you!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Football games are full of traditions! Every time there is a touchdown the entire student section throws purple and gold streamers! It makes for a really cool effect. Also, our freshman orientation is probably one of the most amazing experiences every student has here. It's called 1787 and each freshman is assigned to a group that lives in their dorm and they go around and go to presentation and do fun activities. It's a really good way for everyone to make friends and really get to know the campus.

    Bang for the buck

I'm out of state, and tuition for us is more than double what the in-state tuition is. So, sometimes I feel a little ripped off because I have to pay so much more. But I love it here, so I wouldn't have it any other way. In state tuition on the other hand, is incredibly cheap, so if you're looking for a quality education and want a reasonable price, look no further!

    What to do for fun

There are so many things to do on campus! Aside from participating in our many organization, we have several events that go on. The university holds concert, comedy shows, and more. We also have a movie theater on campus that shows current movies for cheaper than the regular movie theater. There are also countless plays and music programs that play at our performing arts center. In other words, you will never be bored here at JMU!

    Food and Dining

Our food is AMAZING! We're ranked 5th best in the nation, which isn't too shabby. We have so many dining facilities to choose from, so whatever you are in the mood for you can most likely find. The food is high quality as well, and I've never had a complaint.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are sort of hit or miss here. They're spread all around campus and there are several different types. Some are traditional hall style and some are arranged in suites that have a common room. It all depends on what you like. The most popular are The Village (suites), East Campus (hall style), and The Lake. I think dorm life really depends on if you get a roommate/suite mates who you are compatible with. In regards to this, Residence Life is usually very good at assigning roommates. Personally, my roommate is my best friend so it worked out very well for us.

    Academic Rigor

The General Education program here is AMAZING. Even if you have no idea what you want to do, the GenEd classes are sure to lead you in the right direction. You take anything from Art History to Computer Science and everything in between. The professors are amazing and genuinely care about your education and are usually willing to help you whenever you need it!

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be afraid to you be yourself when you come here. There are so many different kinds of people that will accept you for who you are. Find out what interests you and get involved. You are surely bound to find something you're passionate about, especially when you get to choose from over 3,000 organizations. Also, be ready to bleed purple and gold. This is the most spirited school I've ever experienced!

    In three sentences

James Madison University is one of the most amazing colleges you will ever attend. The campus is beautiful, the people are friendly, and the academics are superb. I could not be more proud to be a part of the Duke family.

Great for these types of students

If you like meeting new people, a four season climate, and trying new things, then JMU is for you.

    Tips for prospective students

GET INVOLVED. You get from your college experience exactly what you put into it. There are over 350 clubs on campus, you will be able to find at least one that suits you. Also, when choosing classes ratemyprofessor.com is essential.

    Bang for the buck

Out-of-state tuition is around $26,000, or just a few thousand more than Rutgers in-state

    Am enjoying being here

I love this campus so much! Everyone really enjoyes being here. I've met tons of great people. I'm almost never in my dorm room. I have study groups for every class. I've also joined club ultimate frisbee, make your mark on madison, and nursing students association.

    Am learning a lot

I find all the courses I have taken so far to be interesting and informative. For example, last semester I was in a lab research class examining bactierophage DNA.

Great for these types of students

I think the reason I love JMU so much is because it is really conducive to helping students find their place in life. I had no idea what path I wanted to take, but JMU has so much to offer, it really gave me the chance to find where I belong. So, students that are a little lost, JMU will make you into something more than you could have expected.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply early! I would also say live on the Quad or East Side of campus. And walk the campus; don't take the buses. They are stuffy and annoying. I used to take them, but walking around JMU really improves the way you feel about it (it is so beautiful). In general, apply here. I can't think of anything negatives as to why you would want to go anywhere else.

    Bang for the buck

I am an out of state student, so it is more expensive. However, it is still not insane, and totally worth it. My only criticize is that they do not give out much financial aid. However, I have never been happier, I am getting a great education, and would never want to go anywhere else. So basically, it is worth every penny.

    Am enjoying being here

I love being here and so does everyone else. I work at the calling center, and talk to many alumni. Not one of them had a bad experience here and tell me how much I am going to miss it after graduation, which I already know. The people here are fantastic. Everyone is friendly and I find myself talking to everyone. There are so many opportunities for social events, community service, and support groups. I do not know that any school is a happier place to be. Going home for vacations are usually my least favorite times of the year.

    Am learning a lot

I love my classes here. Some people mock the general education classes, but my English class and Psychology classes have been two of my favorites here thus far. The teachers are always here to help. They have office hours, are so accommodating to your schedules, and are genuinely great people. Of course there are exceptions, but they are far and few in between. I cannot even put into words how huge of a change JMU has had on me as a person. The classes have taught me so much and really have a large influence on the way I look at certain topics.

Great for these types of students

    Laid-back, self-disciplined, and open-minded!

    Tips for prospective students

Studying is more important that partying, but you have to relax and have fun nonetheless. Do not let your room-mate bring you down, talk to your RA and get a new one. Do not think that campus police is a bunch of rent-a-cops, they will arrest you, trust me.

    Bang for the buck

JMU was voted one of the top colleges for your money. Tuition and all the fees for in-state students will run you about 22k, a fraction of the cost of most colleges in Virginia. If you are out of state, I highly recommend looking into Army ROTC, because if you contract, they will offer you a scholarship AND in-state rates. Contact the ROTC department and ask for the national guard recruiter so you can go SMP!

    Am enjoying being here

James Madison University has such a laid back environment. It was refreshing to leave all the high school drama behind and go to JMU. The campus is beautiful, I will put money on that fact that you cannot find a better looking campus in Virginia. JMU is also very eco-friendly, you will notice the huge recycling program and the biomass powerplant as soon as you walk on campus.

    Am learning a lot

The professors at James Madison Univeristy should not be taken lightly. Do not think you know more than them for a second because they will put you in your place and beat you with experience. If you ask most professors at JMU why they teach, I guarantee all of them mention how they love the student pool and that they enjoy the laid-back lifestyle on campus. The professors are not washouts from real-life careers, they are professionals who are they to help guide you through your own career.

Great for these types of students

JMU is great for all types of students, and you can find your niche in so many different places. Mostly, though, we want friendly, hard-working people who are going to be active members of our community.

    Tips for prospective students

Honestly, just be yourself. For the most part, JMU is really non judgmental. Also, have an open mind, be engaged, and work hard. JMU is amazing, and you should come here!!

    Bang for the buck

Ok, I'm an out of stater so it's definitely not cheap. However, you get a lot for your money and it includes everything. I know at some schools you have to pay to use the gym facility or other things like that, but at JMU everything is included. It's really nice because I never really have to spend money. It's different once you move off campus and have to buy groceries, but it's up to you when you want to do that.

    Am enjoying being here

I love JMU and I love being here. I'm so proud to be a duke and I feel so fortunate to be a part of this community. When I visited I knew JMU was right for me because it just has such a great atmosphere. The people are friendly, there's so much to get involved in, and I've made the best friends. Now, it didn't happen right away; it's something you have to work for, but we do our best to help you out, what with orientation week and all the organizations and activities to get involved in.

    Am learning a lot

Overall, yes. I'm a sophomore so most of my courses so far have been gen eds and on average they're really good. In other words, some have been phenomenal and some I kind of had to muddle through, but you get that everywhere. I've learned a lot outside of the classroom, too, whether through conversations with the people here, in clubs I've joined, or at activities on campus.

    What to do for fun

With so many organizations and all the assistance you need to join them, there should never be a dull moment at JMU. They want you to get out and have fun.

    Food and Dining

Ranked as the nations 5th best food, JMU prides itself on options and taste. Between all the places to choose from (over 10) you will never be bored or upset with lunch or dinner. And now, double punching on the weekend is allowed, meaning more food for your week.

    Dorm Life

The village lacks air conditioning. East campus dorms are amazing and the rest are equally nice. The housing situation is really great.

    Academic Rigor

Ranked number one in the nation right now for the Accounting Program, JMU pushes its students just as hard as any private institute. However, unlike a private university or an IVY league, our professors are always there to assist and give us the answers to any questions. There theory is to educate, not fail a student.

    Tips for prospective students

A tip for prospective students would be to learn your limits as soon as possible. JMU is a work hard play hard institute. Students here push themselves in the classroom just as hard as they do at the beer bong table. And, always be comfortable with who you are. With 18,000+ students, this small feeling university has so much to offer that there is no need to conform.

    In three sentences

JMU is what I would call the Disney Land of universities. From first glance, it is a beautiful campus with fantastic people, both physically and mentally. Yet, behind the scenes, like Disney, it is a strategic series of difficult tasks that create such a great outcome.

    Bang for the buck

The cost to live on JMU's campus in addition to tuition is around 17,000. That's a great price for an education! There's not much debt after graduation and they do work with you financially even if it's arranging loans for you. The meal plan may run you a bit (hey, the food is great!) but other than that you are getting a great education for almost nothing.

    Will enjoy being here

Yes! OMG the campus is GORGEOUS. You can expect to get lost once or twice but the campus is great. And I think the food is ranked like #3 in the US or something like that lol. They have many cultural events so EVERYBODY can find someplace where they fit in. And I do mean EVERYONE! The professors for the most part are generally nice and understanding. I think that you'll absolutely love being at JMU!

    Will learn a lot

I recently visited JMU and despite my insistance on not falling in love, I did! I feel that JMU only accepts the best of the best and to be accepted is a true honor. That being said, anyone who plans on attending JMU should expect to be competitive. The only way to really survive at JMU is to learn and hunger for knowledge. Most students are on top of their game and are a constant reminder that you have to do the same. So yes I think you'll learn a lot at JMU DUKES!! Lol

Great for these types of students

Friendly, down to earth people with a love for knowledge, fun, and experiences.

    Tips for prospective students

Smile at people while walking through campus, it's normal. Make laying on the quad a habit. Try new foods on campus, it's all superb. VISIT THE GYM, it's beautiful. And lastly, get out and experience the night life, but remember what the library is for.

    Bang for the buck

Instate, a total steal. Coming from out of state, however, it's more pricey, yet manageable.

    Am enjoying being here

Hands down, the best experience of my life. Not too much to do in the surrounding area, but the liveliness of campus and the amazing people you will meet more than make up for it.

    Academic Rigor

Many don't realize the academic value found in James Madison. Professors care, even on the Gen'ed levels. One of my Gen'ed history professors, for example, made it a requirement to meet with him more than once during the semester. He taught, at minimum, 300 students that semester, but still made a point to get to know each one to the best of his ability. This helpfulness and outreach is much more common than uncommon with teachers, making the learning environment much more pleasant. Also, one thing that I feel always goes under the radar is the advisers. As a freshman, you have 3. As you move on in your college career, you are assigned ones specific to your major. They are not only wonderful people, they are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. In comparison to my friends' experiences from several different schools, JMU has a terrific support system for students through staff.

    Campus Safety

it is very likely to walk through campus after a long night at the library but it is extremely safe here. there are call posts all over campus just in case there is an emergency. in addition, we have campus cadets that patrol the grounds.

    Greek Life

there are various sororities and fraternities on campus. they range from social, cultural, major-based, and religion. they are all rewarding and have a lot to offer.

    Clubs and Activities

there are numerous amount of clubs here at jmu. it is very unlikely to not find a club that is of interest to you simply because there are so many options.

Great for these types of students

this school is ideal for students who enjoy having fun but are also extremely dedicated to school work.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

currently, we have a student who dresses up as james madison and we call her james madison girl. she speaks and acts as if she is james madison. it is quite entertaining.

    Bang for the buck

jmu is not as expensive as other colleges in the area. the cost of tuition as well as room and board is definitely worth the experience. people love it here and it is sad once it is time to leave jmu.

    What to do for fun

urec is an amazing facility that is located on the east side of campus. it contains excellent free weights and weight machines. in addition, there is a hot tub, pool, and sauna. there are also opportunities to sign up for group fitness classes that are fun. jmu also has a lounge named taylor down under that contains couches and tables. many people explore downtown, go for a jog, join clubs, or go to one of the various hang out spots on campus.

    Food and Dining

i have never had food as great as campus food. there are so many choices to pick from and they are all fantastic. the dining facilities are only a few minutes away from academic buildings and this makes it easy to grab and go as you please.

    Dorm Life

the dorms range in comfort levels depending on where you are located. in general, the dorms are all comfortable and bathrooms are readily available. there are kitchens in all dorm buildings. in addition, the dorms contain recreation rooms in which there is a tv and some dorms have pool tables.

    Academic Rigor

studying is definitely necessary but it is easy to build great study skills. you must earn your grades but the outcomes are extremely rewarding.

    Tips for prospective students

definitely visit the campus in order to see if you like it. it would be nice to drop in on a class to see one of the many teaching styles that professors possess.

    In three sentences

james madison university is located in one of the most beautiful places i have ever seen. the scenery is amazing and the school itself has a great campus. every one who comes here is extremely friendly, including the professors.

Great for these types of students

Students who are friendly, outgoing, and want to be involved on and off campus should attend JMU. It's a really fun place to be with so many opportunities to further yourself academically as well as socially. Plus, the campus is focusing on environmental stewardship with new eco-friendly buildings.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply for the Honors Program! As a freshman you are bottom of the totem pole. That means that you are the last to sign up for classes. However, if you're in the Honors Program, you get priority registration which means you sign up before other students in your credit range. You also get generally smaller class sizes and more invested professors. When selecting classes, take Rate My Professor with a grain of salt.

    Bang for the buck

In-state tuition is very affordable, class sizes are relatively small (they get smaller as you get into higher level classes), and you're actually taught by professors. The professors are really here to teach you and help you learn to the best of your ability.

    Am enjoying being here

I love it here! Professors actually take time to learn your name and everyone is so friendly. It's a happening campus, but it's really laid-back. With so many organizations, it's really easy to find your niche on campus.

    Academic Rigor

Classes can be challenging but also very hands on and interesting depending upon the professor. There are tons of opportunities to work with professors in a outside of class doing research or volunteering.

Scholarly. Involved. Loves to have fun. Wants to go to a public school that is growing, but feel like your apart of a small school environment. Loves the Duke Dog! ;)

    Tips for prospective students

Get Involved! There are over 350 organizations on campus, and there is definitely something for everyone.....if not you can create one! I did Make Your Mark On Madison (MYMOM) and i loved it. Its a one time leadership program, and it was better than i expected. Not only that, but i made a ton of great friends which helps with the transition.

    Bang for the buck

College is getting pretty expensive these days, but the price is no where near as valuable as the experiences you have on campus. For all the things to do, the fun times with friends, the great education, and all the other great things you get for being a JMU duke, its worth it!

    Am enjoying being here

There are TONS of fun things to do on campus in your free time, and so many people to meet. When you do start to get involved and make friends, you feel more at home and will always have a good time. You see familiar faces walking around campus, and it feels more like a small school. The UPB organization holds concerts, and events, and its fun to go to the quad and hangout. Down town also has some nice food places, and there's a shopper bus that goes to the mall most everyday.

Ever since I started at JMU, i began to look at things differently. I was challenged to write in new ways i have never wrote in before in my writing class, and took a global social issues class that started out as a requirement to fill but eventually opened the door to seeing things in a new light. There is so much out there to learn, and JMU is helping me realize that!

    Bang for the buck

JMU is definitely one of the cheapest schools in VA for in-state students and its well worth it. Our food is rated #3 and we are the #1 school in the south.

    Am enjoying being here

I wasn't sure if I was going to like JMU as much as everyone says they do, but I ended up loving my decision to go there. I have never seen so much school pride and togetherness. Your entire attitude about people changes once you see how nice everyone is.

    Am learning a lot

JMU students are definitely overshadowed by a lot of the bigger schools in VA. But during my first year here I can say that I absolutely loved it and the teachers. I would have classes that I would not miss for anything because the professors did such a great job teaching and making the students love the material as much as they do.

Great for these types of students

It's great for you if you want to do big things with your life. It's a prestigious school and one of the best in VA. It's a big party school as well. I can't tell you how many people I've met, but again don't get caught up in it. It's easy to fail and drop out. My roommates little brother last year got caught up and now he has a year suspension from the school.

    Tips for prospective students

Get good grades. I had to pull a 3.7 at Blue Ridge and I was still wait listed. It wasn't until they saw my consistency of my last semester that I was allowed to attend.

    Bang for the buck

I just recently heard that it is one of the cheapest colleges in Virginia. I haven't gone to another school besides community college so I won't waste your time with my word.

    Will enjoy being here

I've been at the community college down the road called Blue Ridge and I can tell you one thing for sure is that the night life is crazy but if you want to pass you can't get drawn in to much. I'm going to have to buckle down now that I have finally been accepted.

    Will learn a lot

I will learn a lot and expect to get into the Study of Media Arts and Design at the school. It's a very competitive program. By the time you graduate though you have practically created a portfolio for yourself and future jobs.

    Tips for prospective students

While good SAT scores are great for getting into a great school like JMU, a well rounded resume is just as good if not better. JMU looks for students who take initiative, volunteer in their communities, and are involved with school activities. Make the most out of your high school years and continue with your head held high into the next chapter in your life...college!

    Bang for the buck

Great tuition rates for in-state students. JMU's College of Business ranks in the top 5% of undergraduate business schools across the country. The food is outstanding!

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is beautiful and the food is great! 2 great dining halls(all you can eat locations) one on each side of campus. Plenty of regular little places to eat on the go! Everyone is so nice to lend you a hand if you need help if lost and need directions getting through campus.

    Am learning a lot

The classroom ratios are great. Most professors are very knowledgeable and very friendly and will go out of their way to help you out and make sure you are learning the subject material.

ANY! Anyone can fit in at JMU.

    Tips for prospective students

GET INVOLVED! There is no better way to make friends at this school than getting involved in something, anything! There are hundreds of clubs and organizations to involved yourself with, you just have to take advantage of them.

    Bang for the buck

Since I am from New York I have to pay out of state tuition which is a lot of money. It is definitely cheaper to go here if you live in state but I do not regret paying the larger amount to be there; it is well worth my money.

    Am enjoying being here

I LOVE this school. I could not see myself anywhere else. I was happy as could be last year and I can not wait to return in the fall. I believe anyone can be happy at JMU because there is a wide range of people and things to do.

    Am learning a lot

From the school itself and the people I attend it with. James Madison has very highly rated teachers and I learned a lot my freshman year. I know that I can work harder, which will be essential as I continue at this school. It is not easy but it is beneficial.

JMU is a great place for almost anyone. It has Greek life for the social people, Christian organizations, a lot of musical groups, and many other clubs that help make anyone feel welcome. The entire community is very supportive of all types of people.

    Tips for prospective students

Go to Choices before you make your decision. Even if you know that JMU is where you want to go, learning more about your department can really help you have a head start when going into school. Also, if you aren't sure what your major is going to be, Choices provides talk sessions that can help you choose between two majors that your stuck on. Or, it can tell you how you can combine the two.

    Bang for the buck

Being an out of state student is really hard sometimes. I pay almost double what the in state students do for their education. I do believe I am getting a quality education and receiving many unique experiences I could only get from JMU. But, when the economy is in as poor a state as it is now, paying a lot for college is not easy.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is very big, but it really doesn't feel that way. There are so many things for you to do on campus. Like go to Grafton to see a cheap movie. There are also plenty of things to do within walking distance of the school. I felt at home my first day being on campus. Everyone in the JMU community is welcoming.

    Am learning a lot

JMU provides a lot of interesting classes for you to take for your General Education credits. I'm a Kinesiology major, but I had the opportunity to take classes like Philosophy and Art History, which are interesting to me. If those classes don't sound enjoyable to you, then there are plenty of other classes to choose from. Also, the professors at JMU really want to help you. They want you to do your best in their class, so they provide plenty of time for you to come see them.

    Tips for prospective students

Do everything you can while you're here, especially during your freshman year. College only comes once, make the most of it.

    Bang for the buck

Sure, the tuition is a bit much when you add in the meal plan and room and board. I wouldn't be applying for scholarships if it were cheap, but honestly, I wouldn't give the experiences I'm getting here up for anything. I'm learning so much and meeting people I wouldn't have met otherwise. I getting wonderful opportunities and taking life chances that enrich my life. When you think about, these memories are priceless and so are the friendships I've made. The tuition looks small when you take all of these things into account.

    Am enjoying being here

The people here are so nice! It's the southern hospitality. People hold doors open for you and bless you when you sneeze. There's also so much school spirit. The school spirit is part of the reason I chose JMU. There's also so much to do here. There's always something to do on-campus. And, not that I can be completely unbiased on this one, but the food is excellent. Take it from me, I work for dining services.

    Am learning a lot

I am learning so much here! Every one of my professors has had such a passion for teaching and they pass it on the students. I took anatomy and my professor made me love it so much that I applied to be a Teaching Assistant and am currently an anatomy lab TA. I love the classes they offer and find practical uses for what I'm using in my everyday life.

People who want to meet new friends will have a great time there, and guys might like it a bit more because of all the ladies! It's definitely not a party school, but the campus is very fun and loaded with things to do, and the academics are pretty good as well.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you visit, the campus has a specific feel and it might be just right for you! Make sure you take note of certain things though, when I visited I noticed a smaller dorm size and a much higher girl to guy ratio, so make sure you're okay with things like this.

    Bang for the buck

It's very affordable and they offer lots of scholarships.

    Will enjoy being here

From what I could tell when I visited, JMU is an extremely social school with very friendly students and lots of fun activities. The campus is incredible!

    Will learn a lot

This is the only thing that keeps JMU from being my #1 choice, while the campus and atmosphere is great, UVA and other Virginia colleges seem a lot more impressive when it comes to academics.

Diverse students, business majors, anyone who is undecided, football fans, creative individuals and engineering majors. There is something for everyone at JMU!

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you have a couple ideas of what you want to do before you get there. But, not to worry. There is plenty of general education classes you can take to see what your best fit is. Also, make sure you go to your counselor frequently. Their job is to help you. I have never met anyone here who doesn't like their advisor. Some of my friends believe their advisors are saints.

    Bang for the buck

The food is great. Tuition is definitely reasonable. The academics are nice. The facilities are well kept. The JMU pride and support is pleasantly overwhelming. The campus is beautiful--There are great mountain-scapes to gaze at. I made the correct decision choosing JMU. I love it here. I wouldn't have gone anywhere else.

    Am enjoying being here

What can I say? JMU is one of the happiest campuses in the nation. Everyone at JMU is so down-to-earth and genuinely nice. I love the atmosphere of the surrounding Harrisonburg area as well. I hate being away from JMU. As soon as I go home for breaks, I immediately want to come back. I think that JMU will only enhance people who come here. It definitely did it for me.

    Am learning a lot

I am learning a lot at JMU. I am a Media Arts and Design major. I am loving every minute of all of my classes. I think that the faculty at JMU are understanding. They see where you're coming from and know exactly what to do to get you where you're supposed to be. I was very scared going into college. I did not like the AP courses I had taken in high school and thought that I would not do well. I was definitely wrong. JMU is a great place. I feel like the professors are trying to get you to learn, and not waste your time doing tedious and useless assignments. I think any person who applies can learn a lot from JMU.

    Campus Safety

campus cadets drive around campus to make sure everyone is safe. they will walk you to your car if you feel unsafe and get you to your dorm safely. campus police and harrisonburg police also patrol the campus and off-campus housing. there are also blue lights all over campus.

    Greek Life

jmu has the typical greek sorority and fraternities as well as the honor and academic fraternities. the academic fraternities are a lot of fun and quite prestigious.

    Clubs and Activities

there are a variety of clubs and activities to join. there are intramurals for almost any sport. jmu has a club for basically any interest you could possible have: politics, recreation sports, majors, improv, acting, singing, humanitarian, and many more.

Great for these types of students

jmu is a good university for anyone that wants to come here. friendly, extroverted, and energetic people would do extremely well here.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

the quad one of jmu's most beautiful features. it is a large grass area right in the middle of a group of class and dorm buildings. a lot of people gather here in between classes or just hang outside in good weather. jmu students have a long standing tradition of holding the door open for other people!!

    Bang for the buck

campus cookies is a fun and somewhat cheap way to splurge every once in a while. they are the best cookies ever!!

    What to do for fun

there is a theater on campus that shows relatively new movies or oldies from our childhood for around $2. massanutten resort is 20 minutes away, and you can ski and hike there. clubs and sororities usually have activities, functions, and fundraisers going on on campus that you can go to as well. there is also a small mall and other shops around jmu too.

    Food and Dining

the food at jmu is awesome!! there are a variety of places to eat all across campus, and each have their own type of food. e-hall and d-hall are buffet style, while the other places are more grab and go.

    Dorm Life

east campus dorms are the newest and nicest, but they are out of the way since most freshman classes will be on the quad. however, the bus system makes it easier to get across campus. bluestone dorms, hoffman, and the village are nice as well. the tree houses and lake side are not horrible dorms, but i would put them in last place.

    Academic Rigor

class difficulty varies depending on the subject and level you are taking. obviously, lower level classes are easier but studying is still a necessity. as long as you study and pay attention in class, you should do fine academically.

    Tips for prospective students

try to get the general education classes done first, but don't overload your first semester. also, be prepared to study a lot more than you did in high school because if you don't study more then your grades will drop.

    In three sentences

james madison university is a very fun and beautiful institution. there are a variety of students yet everyone is friendly. the weekends always have opportunities for people to find parties or other fun activities to destress.

JMU is great for every type of student, we have something here to make everyone feel like they fit in.

    Tips for prospective students

For students coming into JMU, just come in with an open mind. Be willing to meet tons of new people. The biggest tip I could give is to put in the hard work at first because it does pay off. It may be hard at first to get adjusted to life on your own, and time management will be hard, but if you start off strong you'll end strong and have learned all you need to know. Don't worry you still get to have tons of fun while doing it.

    Am enjoying being here

Being here is almost being at home. Everyone is so nice and welcoming and you almost never want to leave the JMU bubble. There are so many activities to be involved in, so many opportunities to get out and have fun meet new people. you can ask anyone, you really never want to leave this place.

    Am learning a lot

Here at JMU I feel as if there are classes here for everyone and for every interest. The classes are set up different for every major but grow off of one another. After completing many classes the knowledge I have gain in a year and a half is more than all my years in high school. The teachers make you interested and make you want to keep learning more.

JMU is great for students who don't mind meeting new people everyday. It's great for open minded students who are willing to try new things that they wouldn't normally try. And it's great for dedicated people devoted to succeeding and becoming a better person.

    Tips for prospective students

Although JMU is really as fun and exciting as everyone says, it's also challenging. As much as I love my classes, they're also a bit difficult if you don't take them seriously and put in the time needed. Yes, you may be in class for only 15 hours a week or so, but you must be fully committed to putting a lot more time and effort outside of class. This isn't saying you can't participate in other things outside of class, but you certainly will need to learn to adjust and balance your time!

    Bang for the buck

JMU definitely delivers. Concerning academics, all of my teachers are extremely smart and know what they're talking about. Many of my teachers have had so much experience in their subject and learning from them is an honor. As far as the college experience goes, it's great. JMU is so energetic and the university as well as the students try to hard to host new fun and exciting things to make our college experience one we won't, and don't want to forget.

    Am enjoying being here

I love being here because there's always something going on around campus. Almost every night there are tons of organizations hosting cool, free, and safe events for everyone to enjoy. Everyone I've met is so enthusiastic about our school and everyone is so friendly and helpful.

    Am learning a lot

This semester, I'm currently enrolled in five classes. Two of these classes are general education courses and the other three count towards my major. I've found that all of my classes are somehow related to each other in some way. Everything I've been taught here so far is so complimentary to each other and can be used in the real world. I feel like I'm more aware about our world and can really be successful later on in life.

I have never once felt unsafe at JMU! That's a promise! We have campus cadets and constant police force!

    Greek Life

    Clubs and Activities

Greek life is so great and inspirational. People here are so passionate about helping out the community and making a difference. I know that the sports teams are also very respected. Every person here can find a club that they are passionate about with students that share their passion.

    Clubs and Activities

They've got every club you can think of... my favorite (the snowboarding club!) but if there isn't a club- JMU encourages its students to create their own!

Great for these types of students

Great for any type of student... JMU is more diverse than you'd think. It's really not, just a bunch super skinny, beautiful sorority girls running around. However, that's not to say there isn't a handful of them out there (and same goes for a few of douchey fraternities guys). Lucky, the Greek life, only makes up a small % of the school; so there isn't that much pressure to really join. Apartment parties are how most JMU kids socialize, it just really depends on the crowd you hang out with. For the most part, the students are very laid back, friendly and open to new people, honestly: JMU students just downright like to have a good time. You'll never go to a party and expect to pay a cover charge or have to worry about knowing the right people there. That's more Greek nonsense; hence why the majority of the students choose not to join- Sadly, a lot of those kids really live in their own little worlds.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Not really unusual, but: Springfest... only every 3 years though, after the 2010 Springfest riots, JMU police shut it down pretty quickly. Game days or days of remembrance: Purple out- all the students wear their JMU purples to support.

    Bang for the buck

    The College of Business- Yes.

    What to do for fun

Other than James Madison's infamous party life, there are a few things around town that most students never check out. (Late summer/early spring): swimming & rock jumping at Blue Hole- also, apartment complex pools. (Fall/spring): hiking the Appalachian Trails. (Winter): Massanutten ski resort 30 minutes away. (Year round): Intramural sports, clubs & orgs., billiards/lounge/ipad rentals at TDU...the list goes on.

    Food and Dining

Any and every type of cuisine you can imagine- most of the dining halls are pretty unhealthy (...absolutely delicious, but fattening). Fortunately, we do have a few health orientated type dining halls that you can go to instead!

    Dorm Life

small, but do have shared suites.

    Academic Rigor

News flash, JMU is not just some awesome party, the entire time. Monday through Thursday, should spent wisely doing homework and studying. Your adviser isn't kidding when they say spend 2 hours of studying, for every 1 hour spent in class. *Remember this: when you see your friends going out every single night- and you feel like you're like you're missing out... 95% of time you're not missing anything. Sometimes students forget, that the only person making sure you get to class, complete quizzes, assignments, exams... is you. Its most certainly not your friends, parents, or professors; so don't let yourself get caught up. Besides, by the second semester (if the habitual party goer makes it)- they're almost guaranteed not to return next year.

    Tips for prospective students

Come to college with an open mind, forget about all the cliques and social norms of high school. This is a fresh start to become a whoever you want to be- hopefully you will remember to be yourself. These will be the funnest, and the most difficult times in your life- but it is worth every second. The first semester- will make you feel totally in over your head, definitely homesick, and maybe even a little awkward at first. But, you'll make it through, and you'll begin to finally understand who you are. The best part: you're going to meet life long friends who aren't going to judge you for the mistakes you've made- instead they'll be laughing right beside you. Heartache and sadness will be inevitable- but after everything; it becomes apparent that you're all in the same boat. Although, your family won't be there to always comfort you- try to keep in mind, that your family is right in front of you. Your friends and the people you surround yourself with- will become your new family while you're away at college.

    In three sentences

The purple & blue rolling hills, lay softly against the background; a cool, crisp breathe of deep mountain air; and the butterflies that flutter in our stomachs- every time we come back. We are a student body, who happily smiles at a stranger and holds the door for absolutely anyone. Sometimes we get a little reckless, out of control at times, but when we come to together- we love with all that we are.

Awesome just dont cross the street in front of a bus.

    Greek Life

Gay for guys, okay for girls. unfortunately, people from Jersey now run our greek life

    Clubs and Activities

We have a huge clubs and activities fair at our basketball stadium every semester. It would take way too long to name all of our clubs and groups.

Great for these types of students

Athletic and fit, we were rated very high nationally on fitness. Outgoing but at the same time studious and able to maintain a good standing with the university.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

We have the kissing rock on our amazing quad. The underground tunnels underneath our quad. A lot of people try to have sex in our new football stadium.

    Bang for the buck

If your in state JMU is definitely a good bang for the buck. However, like most colleges out of state fees can be quite pricey.

    What to do for fun

Party, Drink, Sleep, Eat, go to games

    Food and Dining

D hall is pretty weak but lots of food. However, E-hall and the other locations on campus have great food.

    Dorm Life

Even though I lived in a crappy dorm my freshman year I still had a blast. You meet so many new people and instantly make friends.

    Academic Rigor

We aren't as serious as UVgay but we do actually give a crap unlike Radford or ODU.

    Tips for prospective students

Stay away from douche frat life if your a guy. Play intramural sports they are a blast.

    In three sentences

Best place on earth! We party hard with maintaining a high academic reputation. People hold doors for you here.

    Clubs and Activities

The prospect of a college speech and debate club is exciting. Also, expenses for travelling to tournaments are paid by the college.

Great for these types of students

The school of music is high-quality. Dr. Huang and Dr. McCashin are excellent violin instructors. Dr. McCashin is also an excellent conductor and arranger. One of the top music schools in Virginia.

    Bang for the buck

For music students the quality of the education is as excellent as that of schools which cost four times what JMU does.

    Academic Rigor

The school of music offers a very strong musical education.

    Tips for prospective students

For string players interested in the school of music, attend the annual Spring String Thing (in May) at JMU to work with the faculty and experience the campus.

    What to do for fun

There are movie nights at Grafton Theater on the weekends. The University Program Board organizes events throughout each semester such as late night breakfast and Madipolooza which are highly recommended

    Tips for prospective students

Take advantage of the FROG orientation the first week as a Freshman and be open to meeting new people. Also, go to your professor in office hours and develop a relationship with them.

James Madison University is a great school. Students and faculty are very welcoming and friendly and school spirit is tremendous. There is a great selection of classes and majors as well as several extracurricular activities.

    Campus Safety

I am an eighteen year old girl and I weigh about 120lbs. I've never felt unsafe walking back to my dorm late. I do it quite often due to work and late night studying at the library.

    Greek Life

Not the majority of the campus but it can be popular.

Great for these types of students

Students that are applying to JMU should have a good sense of pride in their school because that's where they will be for a good four years. People that apply to JMU should have a good balance of their academic and social life. There is always something to do here.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Our chant: J. M . U. DUKEEEEESSSSS (with the hand motion) The Quad is a beautiful area of grass where you can relax on a beautiful day. Football games are always fun and are a good way of showing our JMU pride.

    What to do for fun

As weird as it may sound several of my friends and I enjoy going to UREC (our on campus gym). UREC has a lot of fun activities to do that are free. For example, we have a rock climbing wall. On the weekends we also enjoy going to the cheap or free movies that play at our on campus theatre.

    Food and Dining

James Madison University has a good variety of food. Granted it's not the same as meals made by mom but it is a good second best.

    Dorm Life

I currently live on a floor with 29 other girls and 30 boys. As a hall we do a lot of activities together and we have bonded throughout the year.

    Academic Rigor

There is a good balance between social and academic life at JMU. JMU is not like UVA or William and Mary. We have a strong sense of pride in our community and do our best to be supportive. Are academics can be rigorous but the university does their best to supply all the tools necessary to succeed.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be afraid to get help from TA's. There help can make the difference between an A and a B..

    In three sentences

James Madison University has a wonderful sense of community. Majority of the people here are proud DUKES! There is a good balance of academics and social aspects here at JMU.

I went there for brunch. It was really good. I couldn't stop serving myself. Usually at other college open houses, the food gave me stomach problems, but JMU's food didn't bother me at all even hours later.

    Dorm Life

I can't tell much about the dorm life, because I'm only researching the college.

    Academic Rigor

JMU encourages students to get good grades. I can't really tell much though because I'm still in high school.

    In three sentences

JMU has a beautiful campus. I went to the open house and the accounting professor not only teaches students but also wants them to secure a job before they graduate. There is also a lot of fun and interesting clubs to be a part of.

Theatre Students. Political Science, students of law. Technology and research students. Education Students, Teachers. Philosophy/Religion psychology

    Tips for prospective students

James Madison University is a great university. Socially it is predominately white. Parties are great relievers of class room stress and females are 99.9 percent safe from danger. There are many things to do outside of campus in Harrisonburg Va. However, they are mostly things you would do in the wilderness, outside.

    Bang for the buck

Students residing inside the state of Virginia will receive a good bang for their buck. However, residing outside of Virginia and paying out of state tuition for the University of James Madison with student loans can be costly. With loan percentages increasing the average out of state student will be one hundred thousand dollars in debt before their completion of undergrad. This institution is not worth one hundred thousand dollars of debt, no university is.

    Am enjoying being here

James Madison University is not the place to be socially with an average student population of 17,000 students. While their I have found and made great relationships. However, the dynamics of a rural setting are comparable to many settings at James Madison University. Therefore, with aspirations of attending a University in an Urban area, I cannot say that my aspirations of a busy city life where achieved. However, I can say after hiking and climbing mountains, building and riding mountain bike trails, and becoming consistently involved with a country side community, my perspectives of a collegiate institution, located in a rural community, has been enlightened to stay and reside.

    Am learning a lot

At the University of James Madison, founded in 1908, I, Joshua Roach am being transformed and molded by the renewing of my mind every semester I enroll for courses at the mighty Madison. Focusing on Law, while majoring in Justice Studies, my american tools are sharpened in the class rooms of my minor, Political Science. Focusing on eighteenth century philosopher's such as Socrates, Thoreau, Aristotle, and Tolstoy. I try to model their efforts to society by volunteering in the elementary and middle schools, mentoring and tutoring high school students, public speaking for peace, planning and participating in vigils for the memory of 9/11, and participating in the James Madison University, Moot Court.

Great for these types of students

Those who; Want a good education without being one of many, Enjoy meeting new people, Don't mind sharing a shower, Need an environment that they can grow in as an adult.

    Tips for prospective students

Never be afraid to ask someone if they have their Mappy or if they know where a certain building is! (A Mappy is a pocket map given to freshman, it's got the names of every building and some other helpful information!) You don't have to party to enjoy yourself- no one is forcing your hand when it comes to these things and if you feel uncomfortable with going somewhere, stay in and watch a movie! Also, if you do go out and happen to get drunk and wander home; the shower is not the place to deposit the contents of your stomach. Likely you're sharing with 3- 20 other people and no one wants to see what you had for dinner. Your RA is there to help you, no matter how useless they may seem at first. If you have a problem with another resident, tell them immediately because that student who is keeping you awake at night may be in violation of quite a few rules.

    Bang for the buck

I'm not exactly how financials work because I'm a lazy slacker so all I can say is it's easier to be in state than out of state. There are still plenty of takers to the larger bill, again everyone has a place.

    Am enjoying being here

Yes, I'll admit to being that one person who just can't get enough of being part of the Marching Band. Call me crazy but it's like having a family of over 450 people! Loving parents, great older siblings, and then the siblings you can't stand- everyone has a place! The people here rock. Students will hold the doors open for one another and, for the most part, don't give disapproving stares to people who don't seem to 'fit in,' and the secret is diversity.

    Am learning a lot

James Madison is not only a great school for those of us who don't want to be 'one in three hundred' in our classes. While some General Education, Gen Ed, classes are large, many teachers make the effort to know their students. With one semester down and seven to go, I'm ready to get an education.

    Greek Life

Our greek life isn't the biggest, and we do have our fratty frats and not-so-nice sororities, but not everyone in greek life is bad! Lambda Chi is a great fraternity if you're a guy thinking about rushing! They're an awesome group of guys that are really down to earth and joined a fraternity for the right reasons, not just to party.

    Clubs and Activities

My favorite club that I'm involved in on campus is Campus Crusade for Christ. It's an awesome organization that really reaches out to the rest of the campus and allows your to meet fellow Christians on campus that love Jesus as well! The people in Cru are so genuine and loving, it's a great place to be.

Great for these types of students

EVERYONE!!!!!!!! I've never met anyone that didn't love going here!

    What to do for fun

There are a lot of people that party here, but I don't, and I still have SO much fun on the weekends and during the week! Especially the next morning when I don't have a hangover :) There are some really cool nature type things around the area, if you're into that on the weekend, and there are so many ways to get involved besides partying, you don't need to go out on the weekends to have fun!

    Food and Dining

OUR FOOD IS AMAZING!!!! Everywhere else I've ever visited, their food was so sub par compared to ours. I don't even mind not getting to eat home-cooked food anymore, because of how good the food is here. It's so great, and having dining dollars for Starbucks is the best things ever!

    Dorm Life

I loved living in the village my freshman year in Weaver Hall, it was an awesome experience. I would recommend living in the village because of the awesome location right in the middle of campus! There are nicer dorms, but the location is everything. And not having AC in the summer really isn't that bad, it's manageable with a fan!

    Academic Rigor

There are some easy classes, but definitely some challenges ones. College anywhere is nothing like high school, but JMU really challenges you in most of your classes. Gen-eds are kind of a joke, and you kind of just have to get them out of the way, but don't take them lightly and STUDY, STUDY, STUDY outside of class! Read your textbooks-it really helps! And go over your notes even when there's not a test coming up.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't worry about your major-you'll have plenty of time to think about what you want to do and take a few classes to see what you like. Go to choices if you're even thinking about coming here!!! It's a great event and really sold me. Attend student org night your first month of being here so you can see all of the awesome clubs and organizations there are!

    In three sentences

JMU is the friendliest campus I've ever been to! Everyone is so nice and open, and you always run into people you know, even though it's a big school. The atmosphere is great, there are so many ways to get involved on campus, and our academics are very competitive as well, making JMU super well-rounded! I LOVE it here!!!!

I haven't once felt unsafe on JMU's campus. If any crime is committed, near campus, we get an e-mail about it on our school e-mail address.

    Greek Life

There are different sororities and fraternities at JMU. Not everyone is in one.

    Clubs and Activities

We have SO many clubs, inter-murals, and activities available to students. Everyone in the clubs are very welcoming. Check out the Club fair at the beginning of the semester to find out about a LOT of JMU's clubs.

Anyone looking for a great place to spend 4 years, you will NOT regret it.

There is the Kissing Rock. Legend has it that if you kiss someone there, you will marry them. There also is the bell tower. No one is allowed in there. Secret underground tunnels. (They're a secret though!)

    Bang for the buck

JMU is VERY affordable in state. Out of state, not so much, but you should expect that when you are going out of the state you live in for a college.

    What to do for fun

Wal-Mart runs. They really ARE fun with your best friends. Go see a concert, live event, or a show on JMU's campus. There is almost always something going on. You can even go camping. It is gorgeous. Go to UREC! JMU has a climbing wall at UREC as well as a large swimming pool, hot tub and many other facilities there. Take a stroll around campus. It is beautiful. Hang out with friends on the Quad- play Frisbee, just hang out, or even nap!

    Food and Dining

JMU has top-notch dining halls. We're number 5 in the country for a reason.

    Dorm Life

Some dorms are nice and air conditioned, some aren't. As a freshman you do not get much say in the matter. You get to choose the general area that you would LIKE to live in, but that does NOT guarantee you are living there. Most juniors and seniors live off campus in apartments that free buses are always going to and from.

    Academic Rigor

General Education classes are definitely more difficult than they should be. As for major courses, it honestly depends on your major. I am a business major and the classes to get into the College of Business are difficult!

    Tips for prospective students

Join a club. Do NOT be afraid to talk to people about the club you are interested in. Reach out to them, everyone is nervous about meeting new people and you'll meet friends easier by joining a club, you already have a common interest! Also, look on RateMyProfessor.com it is very useful in choosing classes. However, don't believe everything about the professors on it.

    In three sentences

JMU has the most beautiful atmosphere that you could look for in a college. The people there are VERY friendly- pretty much everyone holds the door open for everyone else. JMU overall is a fantastic university.

    Food and Dining

Our food is consistently ranked in the top 5 by Princeton Review. There are so many dining halls and so many options within those dining halls. All you can eat or a la carte, punch or dining dollars, quiznos or chik fil a (which is going to have milkshakes next year!)... we have it all.

    Dorm Life

Again, it's what you make of it! You have to put yourself out there, but you can meet your friends for life. Academic Rigor

getting in to this school doesn't seem so bad, but having the right gpa and enough clubs seems fine.

    In three sentences

The campus is very beautiful. I suggest you visit their garden! Very beautiful.

    Campus Safety

I have never felt unsafe at JMU in the past four years that I have attended college here. There are always campus cadets all over campus, which at times can prove irritating, but they do their jobs and they do them well. JMU takes pride in the Blue Lights, which are spaced around campus so that you can see a Blue Light from the one that you are at. These lights indicate where there are Help call buttons to press when one is in danger or needs assistance. Additionally, JMU police are always roaming the streets of campus, in cars, on foot, or on bikes, so you are never far from help. JMU also sends out Timely Notice emails, which inform students of any police activity in the area, such as break-ins, indecent exposures, or shootings.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Traditions are JMU include, but are definitely not limited to: 1-The ever-present call and response of J-M-U! DUUUUUUUKESSSS. 2-Streaking the Quad. 3-Swimming in Newman Lake (though beware of bacterial diseases) 4-'Studying' in the Stacks of Carrier Library.

    Bang for the buck

There are several ways to take advantage of your time spent at JMU. We have a fantastic recreational gym facility that offers group fitness classes, as well as equipment rentals for free. You can check out tents, sleeping bags, and camping gear at no charge (granted you do not damage the items) for a weekend trip, or you could get basketball gear for a pick-up game. There is a movie theater on campus (Grafton), which prices movies at $2.50 and popcorn for $0.50, so you can cut back on spending.

    What to do for fun

There are tons of activities around Harrisonburg to get involved with. There are several religious affiliations that put on various events, such as duckpin bowling, cookouts, and talent shows. Every day of the weekend, there are on-campus shows, club activities, or food/clothing drives. There is never a dull moment in the apartments of Harrisonburg, as you can typically find a party in every complex on the weekends. Harrisonburg has a small but quaint downtown, with a few bars that have become local favorites (when you become of age!). Not too far down 81, there is a drive-thru safari, as well as a puppy farm, and a lavender farm. There are also a few places near the Burg that are great nature spots, including Reddish Knob, Blue Hole, and The Tower, that are great places to grab some fresh air.

    Food and Dining

JMU's food is great. There is a huge variety of culinary options, as shown by the 24 dining locations on campus. More recently, JMU has become much more conscious of going green, including composting, as well as adding several gluten-free options to every menu. Its expansion has been fantastic to watch, and though the prices are definitely higher than they need to be, you are getting a great variety of food options at the same time.

    Dorm Life

Dorms at JMU definitely vary in terms of quality. Some are newly renovated, while others are buildings spanning thirteen floors with only one working elevator and close quarters. The majority of dorms do not have AC, which can be unbearable at times, but it's college and just another part of the experience. For the most part, regardless of where someone lived on campus, the bonds you form with the people in your building based on how good or how bad it was made up for any negatives associated with the living situation. In general, I have only heard overall positive reviews about dorm living, with more miniscule negative additions to that main good one.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on the classes you take, you will obviously find certain classes more difficult or easier than others, but for the most part JMU provides a rigorous program. The GenEds are often much more difficult than necessary for what the student needs to get out of them, which can lead to grades other than expected A's, but they do make you work for your good grades. Each program is a little different, so your hardest course may be Organic Chemistry, or it may be Studio II Art; regardless, you will be challenged by the academics here.

    Tips for prospective students

Come to JMU with an open mind, and be open to new experiences. Even if you are not usually an extremely outgoing person, try new things. JMU offers an incredible variety and abundance of activities, clubs, and opportunities that truly everyone can benefit from and become a part of. Enjoy the party scene. Enjoy on-campus events. Take advantage of the libraries. Take advantage of any aid that is offered. It is not a weakness to ask for help when needed, and you will need it. College is a hard transition and it is not always easy, but you can succeed here. JMU is set up to help you succeed, and if you keep up your motivation, you will do just fine.

    In three sentences

James Madison University is a place that you will quickly call home if you let yourself be encompassed and inspired by the love and community that is ubiquitous. The campus is the perfect size to complete your college career, and the courses are challenging and motivational. Harrisonburg is a true college town with ample opportunities for success, and you will be privileged to call yourself a Duke.

    Campus Safety

Though certain parts of Harrisonburg are subject to a somewhat decent level of crime, the campus itself is always incredibly safe. There are bluelights installed that one can hit in order to summon a campus cadet, but no one ever really needs to. In fact, JMU crime is so low, that students often hold tables in dining halls by putting down wallets, keys, cell phones, and other valuables that are never taken. It's just the JMU way.

    Greek Life

Around 20% of JMU students are part of Greek life, and it has clearly grown in the past couple of years. By Virginia state law, all sorority houses must be on campus, so they are merely dorms that each chapter owns. Fraternities, however, do have the traditional off campus houses, and can be seen as you drive downtown. Keeping with the JMU spirit, members of greek life don't uphold the traditional stereotype of being exclusive, and are very friendly, spirited students just like anyone else.

    Clubs and Activities

James Madison has essentially every club, sport, or activity a person could think of. And if they don't have it, you can make it! I'm personally part of Student Government, and I think joining was one of the greatest decisions I made during my freshman year. Either way, whether it be a sport or a club, join at least one activity, it helps you break away from the JMU bubble and become part of the Madison family.

Great for these types of students

If you're friendly, welcoming, love having fun, meeting new people, eating great food, and making friendships that will last a lifetime, JMU is the place for you. There's everyone from the class clown to the valedictorian here, and everyone is made to feel at home from the moment they walk on campus.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The kissing rock located towards the front of the Quad has been in existence since JMU was just Madison College for Girls. It is rumored that if a couple kisses on the rock, they will be together for life. The tunnels running under the Quad were also used years ago when Madison was an all girl's school. Now they have been blocked off, but many students know the secret entrances and try to walk inside if they get the chance. JMU is also famous for having students hold open the door. This is more than just southern hospitality; it's a Madison tradition.

    Bang for the buck

JMU is one of the best value public institutions on the east coast, and it's easy to see why. From top of the line facilities, to great professors and more, James Madison really knows how to take care of its students.

    What to do for fun

Though it is seemingly in the middle of nowhere, JMU offers so many different clubs and activities that you'll really never be bored. For the older students, downtown Harrisonburg really is becoming a great spot for nightlife, with several restaurants and bars. For the younger students, UREC (the university recreation center) offers classes and different adventure trips daily, as well as a climbing wall and several sports courts and fields. Grafton Stovall movie theater offers 2 dollar movies that have yet to be released on DVD, as well as occasional guest speakers. And the Quad is always a great place to go on sunny days to throw a frisbee or just lay out and tan.

    Food and Dining

There's a reason JMU is top 5 in the country for its food. It is top notch. There are over a dozen places to eat on campus, and eat one offers something different. The meal plan works really nicely, and you can be sure you'll never be hungry.

    Dorm Life

It really depends on which building you're placed in, but overall Residence Life really does take care of its on campus students. Only a few dorms aren't air conditioned, and forced triples rarely occur and are often fixed. I absolutely loved my floor, so I have no complaints

    Academic Rigor

The academic rigor is definitely improving from where it was years ago. I've had some challenging classes, but none that I had fear of failing. Granted I am in the honors program, but I think JMU is clearly climbing the ranks in terms of its level of academics.

    Tips for prospective students

Try to do everything you can. Take advantage of all the opportunities on campus, even if you've never done it before. And everyone is so friendly, so strike up a conversation.

    In three sentences

JMU is the best place on Earth. The friendliest people in the world go here, and it is the perfect balance of everything. It really is home.

    Campus Safety

I have never felt unsafe on this campus. We have a blue light system where there are blue lights set up in random locations on campus. If you feel threatened, scared, or feel uncomfortable in any situation you go and hit one of the blue lights and the police will be there to assist in under 1 minute. Also, police are always present on campus to add to the safety of the university. Also, the campus is very well lit and during orientation you learn safety tips of how to avoid potentially dangerous situations. Also, there are safety escorts you can call anytime that will come and pick you up anywhere on campus if you do not feel safe walking alone on campus.

    Greek Life

I really do not know much about the Greek life at JMU because I am not involved. However, I do know that the Greek life at JMU is active in fundraising and contributing to the community. Also, there are many different sorority and fraternity's to choose from if one chooses to be involved in these organizations!

    Clubs and Activities

The only thing I can say to sum this up is the great variety of options. Sports, student government, art, photography, horses, animals, kids, food, space, chess, dance...the list just goes on and on of the many options that are available!

Great for these types of students

Not to be cliche, but I feel that everyone can fit in at JMU. There are just so many different types of people, organizations, clubs, majors etc. However, two character traits that most people that attend JMU are; friendly and a strong work ethic in school.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Supposedly, there is an underground tunnel system located below the quad. Many students have tried to find ways into the tunnel and explore as part of their graduation bucket list. Also, there is a railroad track that cuts right through the middle of campus. Its really awesome to see a train going through the campus because it makes it even more beautiful. The campus is separated into west and east sides by highway 81 as well. To cross to the opposing sides there are two options; one is by a beautiful bridge and the other is an underground tunnel that goes under 81. The first time anyone goes through the underground tunnel is amazing because it is so neat to be going under a highway.

    Bang for the buck

This school is worth the tuition you pay here. It is in a comparable range to UVA and VT and provides an amazing education. Also, a degree from James Madison in many majors, such as nursing and business, is very highly acclaimed.

    What to do for fun

There is ALWAYS something fun to do any day of the week at JMU. The University Program Board in conjunction with other clubs and associations host concerts, free massages, free food, carnivals, and other varying activities. There is also an on campus dance party on Thursday nights hosted by Club GILTY. This is an alcohol free alternative for students to attend on Thursday nights. Also, there are endless amounts of clubs to get involved in. Whether you're looking for sporty clubs or looking to get involved in the student government or even just want to share your love of art, there is something for you here!

    Food and Dining

One word describes the food here...AMAZING. There are so many great options for food varying from pizza, sandwiches, smoothies, Mongolian goods, fancy grilled cheese, chicken, vegan options, and gluten free stations and so much more! I, myself, am a picky eater and I had absolutely no problem finding healthy, but yet delicious choices!

    Dorm Life

I only give dorm life a 4 star because of the great variation in dorms you can be selected to live in. These many variations include; lack of air conditioning vs. air conditioning, convenience of location on the campus, and suite style vs. hall style. However, no matter the dorm you are selected to live in, the people in your dorm and the RA's make the experience a good one. One must live on campus the first year and it is an optional lottery drawing for sophomore-senior year housing.

    Academic Rigor

The academic rigor at JMU is 5 stars without a doubt. The teachers at this school care about the students actually learning the material, not just memorizing it.

    Tips for prospective students

Go into James Madison with an open mind and be willing to meet new people. James Madison is a very friendly atmosphere and it's not hard to make new friends! Also, learn the fight song and Don't Stop Believin'..everyone sings these songs quite frequently!

    In three sentences

When one thinks of their dream college experience, James Madison is the perfect match. From the tradition of holding doors open, to the friendly smiles and laughter that fill the campus air. James Madison University is not only a great learning environment, but also great place to grow into the person you have dreamed to be.

    Clubs and Activities

There are over 10 clubs you can join at JMU and if you still can't find something you like, you can start your own! I would recommend joining at least one club throughout your career at JMU.

Great for these types of students

JMU is great for any type of student! The campus is so versatile and has something for everyone, and I am not exaggerating. The nursing program is very competitive, along with having a fantastic marching band and music program.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

At JMU students like to dress up the statue of James Madison (Jimmy as we cal him) for different events like Homecoming, football games, Christmas, his birthday and graduation. We also have snowball fights on the Quad in the winter which is a lot of fun.

    What to do for fun

There are so many things to do for fun without even having to leave campus. You can go to a movie at Grafton, go to UREC, sit on the Quad or the Festival lawn, etc. Going into town is also a lot of fun because of all the places to eat and go into and it's only about a ten minute walk from campus.

    Food and Dining

JMU is known for having great food and it is not a rumor! The food is absolutely wonderful for being a college campus and having so many places to choose from, you can eat pretty much whatever you are craving and only having to walk for a couple minutes.

    Dorm Life

My experience living in a dorm was very positive, I loved my RA and made tons of friends during FROG week. Being in a dorm makes it easier to get to know people because you can hang around the common areas and meet almost everybody.

    Academic Rigor

Academics at JMU can be tough because the classes are sometimes over a couple hundred students in one lecture, with only one professor. It is surely easier to delve into a class where the professor can actually acknowledge who you are, but not impossible for large classes. As long as you stay on top of the work load and go to your professor's office hours when needed it should be manageable.

    Tips for prospective students

My advice to future students at JMU is to take every chance you get to be active on campus. Finding clubs and organizations you fit into can only enhance your experiences and create amazing memories. You do not want to regret what could have been something you really enjoy.

    In three sentences

I now consider JMU my home away from home. It is where I have found some of my best friends along with finding out who I am as a human being. I have had an incredible experience and cannot wait for the opportunities that next year will bring me.

    Campus Safety

With the abundance of campus cadets, policeman, and more, the campus has an extremely safe feel to it, and most students have no problem walking back to dorms as late as two or three o'clock in the morning.

    Clubs and Activities

Fun and active clubs on campus include the Marching Royal Dukes, the triathlon club, the ultimate frisbee club, and Inter-Varsity (a Christian organization).

Great for these types of students

JMU is great for all types of students regardless of ethnicity, interests, party life, hobbies, etc. When it comes to academics, while the college is very well-rounded, a few programs do stand out, including the music program, psychology program, and most hard science programs. It is highly ranked for graduate programs as well, and is second in the country for study abroad programs.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

One unusually beautiful location on campus is the arboretum. Many people go there to relax and for photo opportunities. There is a gorgeous lake as well as a sort-of zen rock garden for private meditation.

    Bang for the buck

JMU is the second cheapest university in Virginia at approximately $15,500 per year for tuition, and is ranked among the United States' top value colleges. While it is very prestigious, well-kept, and fun, it is very reasonably priced.

    What to do for fun

For fun, my friends and I like to go to Taylor Down Under to play pool and relax, head to Grafton Theatre for movies, play ping pong in our lounges, and walk around downtown Harrisonburg.

    Food and Dining

JMU's food is delicious. Some of the best dining halls include East Campus Dining Hall, PC Dukes, and Market One. For the past several years, JMU has been ranked among the top few colleges for food in the United States. This includes being second in the country a few years back, and it is still in the top five.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are very nice, relaxing, and welcoming. However, this depends upon which dorms one is living in. Highly spoke of dorms include the Skyline dorms and the Bluestone dorms (especially Wayland).

    Academic Rigor

Depending on your major, JMU may have extremely tough classes or not so much. Generally, some of the tougher majors include history, physics, music (all branches), business, and computer sciences.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure to learn the campus before you first day of classes. While the campus may seem simple and straight-forward, it is tough to gauge how long it will take to make it to a destination considering the hills.

    In three sentences

James Madison University is incredible! The atmosphere is welcoming, the people are friendly, and the academics are great! I cannot wait to return this coming semester.

There really isn't a whole lot to do in the town of Harrisonburg, at least not for a freshman! JMU frequently puts on shows in TDU and there were several concerts the past year. Some of the bigger things cost money but a lot is free. Grafton is a great place to watch movies for an amazing price! Occasionally there are free movies. In the spring there is Madipalooza to look forward to; a day of the inflatable courses we loved as a kid, music, and food.

The food here is absolute heaven! Most of you will probably come to dislike D-Hall sooner rather than later, but there are SO many other great places to choose from! The grilled cheese at Festival is to die for. And when has there ever been a bad day at E-Hall? I highly recommend going there on a Monday, gotta love cheesecake!

    Dorm Life

Another big change, but here is a place where you can make some great friends and really learn how to get along with people. You are forced to see each other basically everyday so you really learn a lot about compromise and adjustment. Some of the dorms are rather old and lack A/C though, so that can be rough for a month or two.

    Academic Rigor

Like any school, some classes are hard, some are not. Professors obviously make a big difference. It definitely isn't easy, but why would you want it to? Easy won't prepare you for grad-school or a career after you graduate.

    Tips for prospective students

Get used to walking early! All the hills are quite a change if you're used to flat lands. Touring to help get to know the campus will make the adjustment easier too. Most of all, just talk to as many people as possible. You're first year can really impact your college career!

    In three sentences

I don't think I could have picked a better school than JMU. It is such a welcoming and friendly community that really makes you feel like you belong. Looking back on the other schools that I applied to, I don't know how there was ever a choice.

    Campus Safety

I always felt extremely safe on JMU. The environment does not have a dangerous feel to it whatsoever.

    Greek Life

Rush week at JMU is absolutely amazing (if you choose to participate). Greek life is very fun to get involved in but don't let that make you think you will be feeling pressured into joining a sorority or fraternity. If greek life isn't for you it certainly won't feel like you're being outcasted.

    Clubs and Activities

There are always clubs hosting events or activities to attend. There is no shortage of offering from these groups on campus.

Great for these types of students

I wouldn't say JMU is better for one person than another. There are all kinds of people on campus and I can guarantee you will find the perfect group for you.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The stacks, or desks scattered throughout the library stacks, is the perfect study spot on campus. It's always quiet and is a wonderful place to get work that really needs attention done.

    Bang for the buck

JMU is quite expensive and in my experience they were rather stingy with financial aid. It was costly to attend and I unfortunately had to transfer because of the cost. I am aware of at least 2 other friends who ran into the same situation on campus.

    What to do for fun

There is so much to do for fun, such as football games, relaxing on the quad, or playing a pickup game of frisbee with friends. The activities at JMU are endless and you will never encounter a boring weekend (except during finals).

    Food and Dining

JMU's food is simply unmatched. The stereotypical bad college food is not present here. Every meal is absolutely delicious and you will find yourself bragging to all your friends at home about how good your food is.

    Dorm Life

Dorms life is wonderful at JMU. It is so easy to make and keep great friends as you progress throughout your academic career. The dorms are very cozy and you can make them feel just like home.

    Academic Rigor

JMU academics offer what you would expect from college: a challenging environment that can certainly be conquered through hard work. Don't worry though, study hard and keep on top of work and you will be fine.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you realize how isolated JMU is from the rest of the world. It's in a college town but outside of that it is very rural. It can feel very far from home at times, so make sure you are prepared for that.

    In three sentences

JMU is located on a simply stunning campus. The school spirit is unrivaled. The college experience provided by JMU is simply unmatched.

Unless you consider some guy trying to roofie you dangerous, then no. Not really. Mostly because noone lives out here.

    Greek Life

The bitchiest sluts on campus. They like to inform you about how they, like, got soooo drunk last night. And then they ask to copy your homework.

    Clubs and Activities

Literally nothing to do here. Everyone is a total jackass.

Great for these types of students

    Nuts, crazies, racists, alcoholics, nymphos.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Does getting drunk and peeing in bushes count? Because I've certainly seen enough of that. Oh, wait. They do like to hold open doors for people. And talk about how wonderful they are for doing so. Even though every single other person on the planet with an iota of manners does the same thing. Everyone here is basically a jerkoff.

    Bang for the buck

    Overly expensive.

    What to do for fun

Drink and have sex with randos. Or else join the super-christian clubs and pray. If you have other interests, you're fucked.

    Food and Dining

Shitty selection for vegetarians. I ended up eating salad the entire year and went from being 127 pounds to 113 pounds. At 5'7. screw you, JMU.

    Dorm Life

I had a roommate that stole hundreds of dollars worth of clothing from me, as well as underwear and bras. The next one I had told me that she hated white girls and got some of her friends to harrass me on campus. I had panic attacks the entire year because I was afraid to go on campus. The RA's did nothing. My fellow residents did nothing. This school did nothing.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are what you are here for, but none of these alcoholics in training seem to care. They only care about boozing and getting laid.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply to Virginia Tech. Don't come here, for the love of God.

    Campus Safety

There hasn't been a time when I didn't feel safe on campus, even walking around at night. There are Blue Light posts set up around campus which are for emergencies or when you don't feel safe and the police will respond to you and come out to meet you immediately. Also there is an organization called campus cadets that will come and pick you up and take you back to your dorm if you don't feel safe walking alone.

    Clubs and Activities

There is a club for EVERYONE. JMU has a lot of things going on, so people should definitely be able to easily find something that interest them.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

People say when you kiss somebody on the kissing rock in the Quad, then that's the person you're going to marry. Also a girl dresses up as James Madison (outift, wig, hat) and walks around on campus from time to time.

    Bang for the buck

For the high ranking and prestige that JMU has, it has a very low tuition cost. Everything is worth it.

    What to do for fun

I hang out with my friends on campus for fun and most of the time and there are lots of club sponsored events going on.

    Food and Dining

JMU is #4 in the country for the best food at a university according to the Princeton Review, so just that alone says a lot about our food and dining services. They have a variety of types of food from Italian to American to Mexican to Chinese. And they have plenty of healthy options.

    Dorm Life

I stay in the largest freshman dorm on campus on the top floor, the 8th floor, and I have absolutely nothing to complain about. I love the girls in my hall and having a community bathroom, isn't bad because it gets cleaned everyday.

    Academic Rigor

This school is definitely challenging, but not hard enough that you won't be able to handle it. Remember, you were chosen because somebody believed you could do it.

    Tips for prospective students

Looking for the right school for you can be hard and stressful, but once you look into JMU, you won't even worry about other schools. Visiting JMU was definitely what made most prior perspective students to come here because everybody loves it!

    In three sentences

JMU isn't known for being one of the best schools in Virginia for anything, it's because it is! When I came to JMU it really felt like home. I felt like I belonged here, as if this school were meant for me.

    What to do for fun

Plenty of things to do on campus. Not so much around town.

    Food and Dining

Best campus food that I've ever seen.

    Dorm Life

I personally never lived in a dorm, but from the stories I've heard, they are less than pleasant -- unless you're in a brand new building that actually has air conditioning.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on the class you take, several of the general education classes still feel as though they are at a high school level.

    Tips for prospective students

Talk to your high school counselors about what you want to do before going to ANY college. Go to jmu.edu and look at the classes offered and take that into consideration when choosing a college.

Last Saturday, my friend and I lay on the quad under a bright blue sky. Suddenly, a group of students near us burst out in applause. We looked up just in time to see a man proposing to his future wife on The Kissing Rock. Legend has it that if you kiss your loved one there, you'll be with them for life. I guess it's true! We also have what I like to call Extreme Politeness Syndrome. We hold doors open, mind our pleases and thank yous, and are always sure to smile at the valued custodial staff.

    What to do for fun

Dukes know how to have fun. We take our schoolwork seriously, and know how to let out the stress. On the weekends, the party scene is always an option. If that's not really your style, clubs have events on Friday and Saturday nights. Or you can rally your friends-- I have a few who love their weekly movie nights.

    Food and Dining

We're number one in the state for food, and number five in the nation. Whether you're feeling Grilled Cheese Thursdays at D hall, Red Mango from Top Dog, a salad from Mrs. Green's, or Mexican from Dukes, JMU dining has whatever you're craving.

    Dorm Life

My dorm is more like an extended stay hotel. JMU has every dorm style you can think of: suite style, traditional hall, even suites in the Village that have common rooms to hang out it. More and more buildings are being air-conditioned!

    Academic Rigor

Expectations are high, here! We work hard so we can play hard.

    Tips for prospective students

Be open to meeting new people! At a big school, it can be hard to make friends, but as long as you keep your mind flexible about the type of people you can be friends with, you'll be a social butterfly in no time! Stay on top of work. It can pile up fast!

The campus police are very active, and really want to get to know the students and protect them. However, crime still happens, just as on any college campus.

There are tons of clubs to join. I am personally in Club Swimming, and it's fantastic.

Great for these types of students

All types. Well, those who are down-to-earth and enjoy having a great time with great people.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

It is tradition to hold the door open for people. Another tradition is going to brunch at E-Hall (east campus dining hall) on Sundays. It's so good. An unusual location on campus is Hillcrest House, a place for honors students to go study or hang out, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There's also the spirit rock, which students can spray paint to create spirit. Lately, it has been painted for ovarian cancer awareness and breast cancer awareness.

    Bang for the buck

The teachers are incredibly interested in helping their students do well. Also, the food is worth every cent (in my opinion). There are lots of free events around campus (such as late night breakfasts), so it's definitely worth it.

    What to do for fun

You can go to UREC, the University's Recreation Center (the gym). They have a rock climbing wall. There are also many clubs; there is one for everyone. The football games are lots of fun to go to, as well. Also, you can go into downtown Harrisonburg or just hang out with friends!

    Food and Dining

JMU's dining halls have lots of options--there is bound to be something for everyone! There are two all-you-can-eat-buffet-style dining halls that have many different options at each one. The dessert bar at E-Hall is the best!

    Dorm Life

The dorms have wonderful staff, and you really create bonds with the people you live with. The dorms in Skyline are the best (they are newer and have A/C).

    Academic Rigor

I have heard that admission to JMU is getting tougher. It depends on what kind of work you did in high school, but I think that the academics are at an appropriate level of rigor: they are not overly easy, nor are they overly difficult.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply early if you can, and be sure to look into scholarships early if you are going to apply for them. Also, apply to the honors program. It has several benefits, such as special access to a study location and special housing and early registration for classes.

    In three sentences

JMU has some of the nicest people you'll meet: they truly have an interest in you. There is a ton of school spirit, which makes for a fun, unified, easy-going atmosphere. Bang for the buck

Fairly low tuition for in-state and out-of-state students. Worth every penny to experience the JMU lifestyle. As long as your grades are good you do not have to pay to take extra credits, too.

    Food and Dining

There's a reason JMU is rated #5 in the nation for food services: there are so many different places on campus to eat, the dining system is easy to figure out, and the food is delicious! Sure, you're going to miss mom's home-cooked meals, but their food certainly comes close... especially D-Hall dessert!

    Dorm Life

Dorm life also varies. I was lucky enough to be accepted into the Arts Learning Community in Wayland which is a Platinum Leed dorm (super eco-friendly and SUPER nice). Some dorms, like Eagle, are a dump to be in though, but I heard they are planning some renovations!

    Academic Rigor

The classes here vary on how hard they are depending on who your professors are. Each professor is dedicated to their work but some of them don't remember that their class is just and general education class and that some of the students are only taking it because they have to.

Great for these types of students

This campus lacks diversity, racially this school is made up of 90% caucasian students. This school could be viewed as a country club school.

Very good typical american food but lacks diversity, the food gets old quickly but considerably tolerable.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life for a freshman is required and it's good, the dorms are kept clean with housekeeping. Most of the dorms are in a good location for convenience, however some of the newer dorms are pretty far.

There is JMU police all over campus and if there are any incidents on or off-campus nearby the students are notified in an email. I feel comfortable walking around campus at all hours of the night.

    Greek Life

I'm not into it personally, but I know that JMU is better about not letting people get hazed than most schools are. For example, the worst hazing I've seen so far is a guy standing by the milk in a dining hall saying moo to everyone who got milk.

    Clubs and Activities

So many clubs to choose from, too little time to partake in all of the activities advertised. I recommend not missing late night breakfast or any of the fun stuff during FROG week of your freshman year.

    Bang for the buck

Best decision I've ever made to come here.

    What to do for fun

There are dorm programs, concerts, late night breakfasts at the dining halls, parties, and a different club for everything.

    Food and Dining

Some nights its hard to choose where to eat because I have favorites at every place. No matter who you are (I am the pickiest eater I know) you will find something that you love to eat. There is pizza at every dining hall!

    Dorm Life

I hear stories of the fire alarm being pulled at 3am sometimes in other dorms, but I personally love my dorm and haven't had any annoying occurrences like that. My RA is a sweetheart and she helps me with a lot of my problems when I ask her to, but she also leaves me alone and lets me do my own thing which is helping me build my independence.

    Academic Rigor

I don't find myself struggling with the work so much as I do find myself struggling to balance my school work with my social life.

Great for students who are super into school spirit, a typical campus feel, who plan on joining a sorority or fraternity, and who want to make lifelong friends. No matter who you are, you can find your place at JMU.

There's a giant rock on the Quad called The kissing rock. Legend has it that if you kiss your significant other on that rock then you'll marry them!

    Bang for the buck

In-state tuition is very reasonable and you get more than what you pay for. The punch system is kind of annoying (if you don't use all of them for the week then you lose them) but other than that, it's fine.

    What to do for fun

There are always parties going on during the weekends and you can pretty much walk into any house or apartment and join the party! People are always friendly. People also go to downtown Harrisonburg or Taylor Down Under to enjoy an open mic night or Funny Freakin' Friday. UPB is always doing stuff, too!

    Food and Dining

DELICIOUS food. You can eat something different every day from one of the many places to eat around campus. Wonderful, yummy food.

    Dorm Life

Whether you're on East Campus (which is more of a modern, hotel-feel kind of living situation), on the Quad (which are also nicer but older), the Village (which are the older style without A/C or Wifi but have that traditional dorm-feel that many crave), or another dorm on campus, you'll make friends with the people in your suite and your halls.

    Academic Rigor

There are a lot of gen eds that students have to take, and while some may seem mundane, many are fascinating. Once you get into your Major classes, prepare for work! JMU students are expected to excel academically because they are at one of the best universities in the state.

    Tips for prospective students

Only come here if you're sure you want to be surrounded by abounding school spirit and you want a real college campus feel. Also be prepared to walk, especially freshman year when you live on campus and don't have a car!

    In three sentences

JMU is beautiful no matter which part of campus you're on. There are beautiful buildings, friendly people, and delicious food, all on the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Great for people who want to succeed academically and thrive socially.

There are tons of fun activities to do and things to see on top of the important matters. Football games are always fun to attend, but perhaps one of the best places to be is on the quad. In December, there is a special Christmas tree lighting ceremony which is absolutely fabulous.

There's a club for almost anything you can come up with. And if they don't have a club you want (which is highly unlikely), you can start your own!

Great for these types of students

Anyone and everyone. There's something for all and the diversity in personalities, lifestyles, and traditions of students is overwhelmingly awesome to be a part of.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Make sure you know about the five things to do before you graduate.

    Bang for the buck

JMU makes sure students get as much out of their college experience as they're paying for and then some. Between the free shirts, events, and food, future career help, and tutoring, there's no stinginess when it comes to students.

    What to do for fun

The college is surrounded by tons of outdoor activities (including hiking, kayaking, caving, etc.), volunteer opportunities, a young downtown college scene (fun restaurants, clothing shops, a kid's museum, etc.), there's a theatre on campus that plays movies just out of theatres, and the Forbes performing arts center offers shows that have both students or visiting performers (plays, dance shows, musicals, musical performances). Basically if you want to do it, JMU has it.

    Food and Dining

4th in the country, nuff said. Seriously though the food is absolutely amazing and the choices cover a broad range of pallets.

    Dorm Life

Yes some dorms are better than others, but even the last choice dorms have awesome amenities, weekly programs from the RAs, are extremely well-kept, and conveniently located. I've never heard any notably bad complaints about ANY dorm... other than maybe a crazy roommate, but that's different.

    Academic Rigor

Even the GenEds take some hard work and extra study time, but it's all part of having a competitive curriculum that's meant to challenge students and get them thinking.

    Tips for prospective students

Sign up for as many clubs as you can, don't be afraid to be silly, speak out about your passions, and take classes that may be irrelevant to your major but you may have an interest in.

    In three sentences

James Madison University is by far the greatest school in the country. From the very time I simply drove through it until now as a rising Senior, I've felt this feeling that I can't explain other than I know anyone would have the time of their life while gaining an invaluable education while attending. I will NEVER regret my decision to go there.

    Campus Safety

Campus cadets are there for your safety! I promise they're not always the bad guy. Also, the blue lights on campus are phones you can call for police or campus cadets.

    Greek Life

12 sororities, numerous fraternities. Greek life is decently sized, but proud and united.

    Clubs and Activities

There's literally a club for EVERYTHING.

Great for these types of students

football games - throwing purple and gold streamers after a touchdown. WE HOLD OPEN DOORS, NO MATTER WHAT. They give you a list of traditions and like a bucket list, as a freshman. Do them all! Or make your own!

    Bang for the buck

Cheapest in state tuition for a public school, and our public schools are pretty good for, well, being public in Virginia.

    What to do for fun

There's parties no matter what school you go to, but here you can find one no matter what you do. But there's other things to do ASIDE from party. Downtown is adorable and has plenty of concerts at the Blue Nile. There's movies at Grafton. You can stay in and study or have a movie night with friends. Just be careful about alcohol in the dorms, because you can get in major trouble for it.

    Food and Dining

Number 4 food in the nation FOR A REASON. It's easy to stay healthy with all the salad and vegetable options, but easy to be unhealthy if you're not careful. Personally, Dukes and Mrs. Greens are my favorites.

    Dorm Life

Village - center of everything, no a/c. Suite style. Most people enjoy it, though. Bluestone - gorgeous buildings, a/c. Hall style. Great for majors in theatre and music and who will be on the quad consistently. Lakeside - STAY AS FAR AWAY AS POSSIBLE. Eagle is trouble from the moment you walk in. no a/c. Good for business majors, though. Treehouses/greek row - I don't know much about living on the row, but it's a house full of girls, so do what you feel is best. (You can't do this unless you're in a sorority and are higher than a 1st semester freshman). Treehouses, though, are pretty nice, but a little far away. a/c. I've heard both good and bad. Hillside - heard it's 2nd best to live in, has a/c. Lives close to food, which must be nice. East campus - I've heard it's pretty nice, hall style, and has a/c.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on what classes you take and what your major is will definitely determine your difficulty in the 4 years. Don't forget to take your Gen-Eds asap, so you can enjoy your major later on. Always talk to your adviser!

    Tips for prospective students

Stay on top of your work. Don't be afraid to ask for help in office hours, your teachers are there for that. Always stay open-minded.

    In three sentences

Attending JMU is probably the best decision a person can make in their lifetime, even if they don't believe so at that point in time. The people are friendly, open, welcoming, school-spirited, and, best of all, life-changing. Not to mention that our school motto is be the change.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is great. I felt comfortable right away and made friends immediately.

    Academic Rigor

JMU is as challenging as you make it. If you choose to challenge yourself academically, you can easily find courses to enhance your strengths and help you in areas that you may have been week in academically.

    Tips for prospective students

    What to do for fun

Once you've made friends (through dorm and campus activities, or if you are lucky enough to be going to school with someone you knew from home,) nothing beats picking up a movie and getting some popcorn. There are a number of restaurants in the area for the occasional off-campus treat, but, trust me, when it comes to taking care of the contents of your wallet, sign up for some intramural sports, meet your friends at UREC for some exercising in good company, watch the movies at the Grafton-Stovall theatre, and find some time for just hanging out with some buddies!

    Food and Dining

East Campus Dining Hall (ECDH, or 'E-hall') and Festival Student Center are the places to go on-campus. JMU's dining services regularly make the top 5 in the Princeton Review for on-campus dining, and the cooks really care about the food they serve and the students who eat their cooking!

    Academic Rigor

Come prepared to be challenged! You do have a job here and it's to learn. A common line of thought is to schedule 2-3 hours of study time for each credit hour in your course schedule, so if you're attending as a full-time student, you can expect to need a full 40-hour work week in study-time alone.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not forget to attend to your own needs while you hit the books! Use a calendar or planner to help you with scheduling everything from class times, study periods, and social activities, but don't forget to include time for yourself (personal reflection, workouts, church, etc.)

    In three sentences

JMU is certainly a school worth its salt. With an emphasis on research-based learning and application, a student ready to apply him/herself to the workload is sure to leave here ready to take on the challenges employment can provide. After a brief hiatus, I knew I wanted to come back and complete my degree, and I know that my time spent learning at JMU will enable me to provide better service to my clients.

    What to do for fun

What attracted me towards JMU is the mountain scenery. The campus is located not even thirty minutes away from Massanutten Ski Resort. Though, if skiing or hiking isn't your thing, JMU has a huge selection of clubs and organizations that could be fun.

    Food and Dining

From what I have experienced so far on campus from the times I have visited, the food has been delicious. Every dining hall has a large variety of food and if your not feeling the dining hall, Starbucks and Chick Fil A are right around the corner! :)

    Dorm Life

There are different types of dorms a student can sign up for. It is up to personal preference.

    Academic Rigor

I'm attending James Madison in the fall but I know many students that have already been attending for years now. From what I can tell, the academics can be challenging just like any other university but as long as you do your work and work hard as well, excelling in academics is not a far out goal to reach.

    Tips for prospective students

Have fun but make the right choices. Don't lose sight of your goal which should be to get a good education which your parents, grandparents, or even you are paying for.

    In three sentences

James Madison University is such a energetic and enthusiastic place to be. Every time I step on campus everyone is so helpful and friendly. Its a beautiful place to live with so many opportunities available for students.

Great for these types of students

    Food and Dining

We have been ranked in the top 10 by the Princeton Review for the last 5 years and with good reason!!! I'm a vegetarian and I have never had a shortage of tasty and healthy options to choose from on campus!!!

    Tips for prospective students

    Greek Life

Greek life is pretty tight kit and quickly growing! It's a lot of fun but we could do a little more about getting everyone on campus involved in our fun events

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Shouting JMU! and the other people have to reply Duuuukes! Clapping in the middle of the quad will give a surprise noise! :) Lots of ghosts stories, but don't worry, I've never seen them. There are tunnels under the quad - you just have to find the opening! We throw streamers at every football game when we get a touchdown.

    What to do for fun

There's ALWAYS something to do!! I swear every week I turn around and there's more free stuff or another festival or JMU day or something! JMU also helps you get really involved in new clubs and orgs that helps you keep busy and have fun. Harrisonburg also hosts a lot of events like a block party, farmers markets, etc.

    Food and Dining

We have almost ten dining halls and they all have different food! Timing can be a little annoying on weekends but that's the only negative thing! Food is delicious, and the meal plan makes more sense than you first think. It's confusing to get used to but it makes your life much easier!

    Dorm Life

The dorms aren't like a hotel suite - but what dorms are?! There's a lot of spirit and friendly rivalry between dorms on campus, which can be really fun. There's always activities planned, and they aren't huge dorms, they're all split up so you can realistically know your whole dorm.

    Academic Rigor

As a freshman I took a lot of general education courses, and some of those weren't the hardest. However, I did learn a lot more than I ever did in high school and it's a lot more interesting! My major courses are also very professional and helpful for the real world.

    Tips for prospective students

JMU will be your home away from home. There's always stuff to do on campus, like festivals, markets, games, movies, concerts and more. They never let you go bored! Also, I thought I wanted big classes but the small-large classes at JMU are perfect. You get to know the teachers more personally and have some more fun in the classroom, and your teachers will try more unique ways of teaching something. Also, If you go to JMU, do not blow off orientation week! JMU has one of the best orientations in the nation, and if I had blown it off I wouldn't have fallen in love with the school. You meet so many people and constantly just have fun, and you won't have a chance to do that again.

    In three sentences

I didn't want to attend JMU originally, so much as to debate transferring. After the first week, they got me hooked by the atmosphere, friendliness, and more. They're constantly just having fun and working hard with students to make them feel at home, excited, well-rounded and well-educated which I really appreciate!

The Quad tunnels! They exist guys! The Quad tunnels were in use over 50 years ago and they allowed for students to get from one building to another during inclimate weather. These tunnels have since been closed off and now house heating pipes etc. but there are entrances everywhere if you know where to look.

    What to do for fun

Oh my goodness! There's so much you can do here and that includes going shopping in Downtown Harrisonburg, hitting up the thrift stores, getting involved with different organizations on campus, joining a Sorority or Fraternity, joining an a Capella group, joining a club, and even taking trips with your department!

    Food and Dining

Woo! JMU is ranked #2 in dining this year (2013)! I work at D-Hall and even though we might get really crowded at times and the workers seem slow, it's not on purpose! We are working hard to get you, and your 500 best friends, fueled up before your next class starts but please remember that many of the staff are your fellow students! JMU loves its students and hopefully they love us!

    Dorm Life

You can sign up to room with your best friend from high school or you can make a new best friend. For the most part, random roommates works out really well but if you sign up late, you're thrown to the wolves and your situation might not work out. Keep an open mind and if you feel like your relationship with your roommate is going down, talk to them or ask an RA what you can (or should) do about the situation. Many dorms are being renovated or are on the board for renovation so you might have to deal with banging going on during nap time. But if you want A/C next year, Villages, you'll deal.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on your major you're going to have different amounts and difficulties of work. Some will find it easy and others will lose sleep over it- find someone to struggle with you and you'll have an extra resource to ask questions to before going to the teacher. Study groups are also helpful- unless it's a project and then it's cheating. Some teachers give a lot of homework, some don't give any. Make sure you understand what's expected of you in the first week of classes so you don't fall behind.

    Tips for prospective students

The Fall semester is always easiest, it's when Spring rolls around that grades drop because everyone is out in the sun. My advise- invest in a notepad and pencils and study outside when its nice. Finals are always a busy time for students and all libraries. We live in a city so my advise- take your time to either borrow the book you need for that final early or see if Massanutten Regional has it! Stay clear of the library if at all possible and study in your room or your Major's building. You've always wanted to be part of something, right? If you play an instrument or sing then join a class as stress relief (and a good grade.) You'll meet a lot of people that way and you won't be so claws and teeth at the end of the semester. Want to travel? When winter rolls around we have Massanutten to skii and snowboard at and there's a bunch of programs through UREC that get you off campus.

    In three sentences

A great place to make life long friends and connections. Great food, fun, and classes! We're just one big family and I love it.

    Campus Safety

Campus is safe! We have emergency calls all over campus, theirs a rule that you can't go 100 yards without seeing one. Theirs campus police and harrisonburg police to keep us safe. Everyone walks everywhere even at night and it's a safe campus.

    Greek Life

Greek life is only big if you want it to be. If you don't like greek life you won't even know it's there. If you love it you'll be into it 24/7. It's what every you make of it and thats the beauty of it.

    Clubs and Activities

We have so many clubs on campus I can't even keep track of them all. I'm just starting a club now and you can pretty much start a club for anything. They're awesome and a great way to get involved!

Great for these types of students

JMU is great for students who are outgoing and love having a good time. When I think of JMU students I think outgoing energetic enthusiastic but thats not how everyone is. All different types of students fit in here that is just the majority of students.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

We have a kissing rock! Legend says that if you kiss your girlfriend or boyfriend on that rock you will get married to that person.

    Bang for the buck

JMU isn't a very expensive school and it's a beautiful campus with a one of a kind personality so I believe it's a good price. It's a little on the pricey side but compared to some schools this isn't bad at all.

    What to do for fun

Go to sports events! The dukes supporting dukes is a huge program and most students love coming out to sporting events. Theirs also clubs, mixers, and tons of off campus party life always going on around campus.

    Food and Dining

We have the #2 food in the country! With over 19 places to eat on campus it doesn't get better than this. Our food is unreal and every time someone comes to visit me I take them to eat campus dining hall food because it's that good. The meal plan is super easy to work and the food is incredible, their always somewhere to go eat.

    Dorm Life

Depending on what dorm you live in you can have really nice dorms or not so nice dorms. I lived in the village where there was no AC or wireless, but they just got wireless this year. You only live on campus as a freshman and you can as a sophomore but most people most off. I definitely lived in the crappiest dorms but they were the most fun. We were in the center of campus and everyone was always having a good time and out and about. I loved it even though they weren't the 5 star resorts we have on east campus. Those brand new dorms are so nice.

    Academic Rigor

In my opinion the academic rigor isn't too hard but again it depends on the type of student you are and what program your involved in. I am a business and engineering major and find the business school's 300 program extremely difficult but most of the general education programs and most other majors are not as difficult. It starts with finding what you love and putting the effort into it, if you enjoy it it shouldn't be too difficult anyway.

    Tips for prospective students

Prospective students, make sure you fit into the college you decide to attend. Whether it's JMU or not make sure it's a fit. JMU is a school where people are out going social and theirs always tons going on and so much to get involved in. As a freshman I wish I had gotten more involved. I'm an athlete and the athletic world is small but theirs so much more going on outside. If your spirited and outgoing for your school, you love having a great time and getting a good education than this school could be the one for you. Coming into JMU make sure you branch out of your comfort zone. Get involved in anything that looks interesting and make tons of friends because they'll last a life time. We are a family here and it's an amazing opportunity to be a part of a school like this.

    In three sentences

James Madison University is a campus where everyone likes to enjoy themselves. Students are happy being a part of the Madison family, and this truly is a family. There is no other campus in the U.S. with amazing SMAD(Studio Media Arts and Design) and Business Schools along with the second best food in the country and a place where everyone is so nice that it's looked down upon when you don't hold the door for someone.

    What to do for fun

There are football, soccer, volleyball, dodge ball, and various other games you can attend for fun. There are always parties and multicultural events such as the Delta Sigma Theta Fashion Show. The mall is also a place for fun with friends.

    Food and Dining

The food is rated high at James Madison University. I recommend E-Hall and Festival because they have more diverse food choices, such as Chinese food. If you want to bring a guest, you can but make sure you have a dining pass for them so you don't have to pay.

    Dorm Life

When dealing with a roommate make sure to lay out all the ground rules before hand before things become out of control. Respect your roommate's privacy. Enjoy an opportunity to live with someone new.

    Academic Rigor

Academically James Madison University is very difficult. You will always be challenged intellectually. Always ask for help.

    Tips for prospective students

My tip for prospective students is to put your studies first before parties and other social events. Always have a back up plan. The key to succeeding at James Madison University is to never give up and maintain your confidence even when things become too difficult.

    In three sentences

I believe James Madison University is a great school for family-oriented people. There are many opportunities to learn and experience various cultures from around the world. This school is very prestigious and fun.

    What to do for fun

Oh, there are so many options. And I know, that sounds so cliche and every college has plenty of options but JMU has such an eclectic gathering of students that they really try to appeal to everyone. There are informational speakers, a movie theater on campus, concerts on the regular, UREC classes, and over 200 clubs to join and participate in. Despite the cliche, JMU really does offer a special experience to everyone.

    Food and Dining

Yum! 2nd in the nation for food services and there really isn't a question as to why. There are two main cafeteria all you can eat style locations, one on each side of campus. Besides those 2, there are a ton of options where you place an order of what you want, which is also followed by a bagel place, 2 Starbucks, and our very own Chik-Fil-A! The only problem tends to be in decided to eat!

    Dorm Life

Dorm life quality increases here at JMU every year. There are 6 different area to live in here, all of which have their own pros and cons depending on what you looking to do here! The upkeep of each individual dorm is great, and RA's are fabulous as well. The roommate situation is left up to you with the option of finding your own through Facebook or online roommate searches, or you can also do random. Here at JMU random tends to work out just as well as finding each other before hand. Dorm life here, just as classes, really is what you make it! But let me tell you, you're given a pretty good foundation on which to enjoy yourself with.

    Academic Rigor

School here is what you make it. You could be the kid who flies through college by taking only the easy classes or you can trudge through your years here taking only the hard classes. It's truly in your hands here. To graduate from JMU as a student you must complete 5 sets of Gen-Eds. In those 5 Gen-Ed sets is a plethora of options, so your schedule truly is in your own hands. With that said, if you ask the majority of students here, they would be compelled to say that their workload is pretty well balanced.

    Tips for prospective students

-Leave the baggage- Coming from a current student who is over 500 miles from home and all of her friends, there is honestly no reason to hold back from anything. The students, professors, workers, and anyone else that is seen on campus just truly want to help you in anyway possible, make you comfortable and smile, and genuinely care about you, whether you know them or not, let alone if you will ever see them again. -Open eyes, open heart, open hands- With everyone here being so caring and willing to help, it should only be the same for you. Flyers are handed towards you on the daily by the dozen. Chalk drawings advertise events under your feet, and just a warning, all your emails will be from JMU too. But for amazing reasons! There are so many events and meetings and free food/t-shirt/merchandise opportunities going on at JMU that will help you, the community, or maybe the world. Look at those flyers before throwing them away, read emails, and always smile when someone asks you something on the Quad. It's amazing how many opportunities are actually handed to you when you open up.

    In three sentences

James Madison University is such a genuine school. The students are so down to earth and compassionate towards others, while the general atmosphere of campus is truly just happy and fulfilled no matter what the day or weather. As soon as one steps on to campus it's so easy to be infected with the passion for life that everyone here seems to have.

Harrisonburg is a small town, and students stay near other students campus isn't terribly spread out, so I 'd say it's fairly safe. All my dealings with cops have been very reasonable toward students in regards to noise complaints or breaking up parties, and are willing to answer any questions, from places to avoid to car help.

    Greek Life

The school isn't heavy on Greek life, but it's definitely prevalent. It seems pretty either or-- I know plenty of people involved in Greek life (Social, Special Interest and Service) who love it, and plenty who aren't.

    Clubs and Activities

There are tons of clubs, there is literally something for everyone, and there's always one club or another hosting a fun event.

Great for these types of students

This is by far the friendliest campus I've ever set foot on, it's big enough to be spread out and find your own interests, but it's not too big that you get lost. Everyone's open and simply nice, everyone's here to help each other and have fun.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

JMU is spirited, to say the least. Tailgates and games are a big to-do, and the marching band is phenomenal-- they're in the Macy's Day Parade! Halloween and St. Patty's day are a big deal, everyone loves dressing up and celebrating. As far as actual traditions go, check out Madipalooza and special events like that, they're awesome free carnivals in the spring.

    Bang for the buck

JMU is a bargain, it's a school with great standing with very established departments and a lot of resources, and it's a fraction of other schools.

    What to do for fun

Harrisonburg itself is really accessible, and there are movie theaters, malls, hooka lounges and bars, plenty of camping and hiking, skyline drive, bowling alleys, nice local swim spots, skating rinks. Campus always has events going, they have concerts, talent nights in TDU, festivals, MIDNIGHT BREAKFAST!, really cheap movies on campus. All kinds of stuff to do.

    Food and Dining

The food is so so so good! there are a billion places to eat on campus, all kinds of food, plus all kinds of places to order from too. Check out D Hall, Dukes and Festival.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is fun. You meet people who stay friends with you that you never would have met otherwise, and living on campus is fun, you're so close to everything and everyone. The rooms are your standard dorm rooms, they're not huge, but RAs are laid back and reasonable.

    Academic Rigor

As you go farther into your major, you definitely start to spend more nights in the library, but JMU is just as focused on academic as they are on outside activities apart from your school work.

    Tips for prospective students

-Don't stay locked in your dorm. Get out and talk to people. Really, there are 20,000 people, you're bound to like at least one of them. -Check out KIN classes, you can so cool stuff like kick boxing or get scuba certified for class credit. -Memorize the number for Jimmy Johns, Tutti Gusti's, and at least one Chinese take out place.

    In three sentences

JMU is the friendliest, most welcoming campus I've ever been to. The student body is made up of people from all over the country, as well as a lot of international students, and everyone is here is nice and easy going, and very passionate about their majors. I wouldn't be happy anywhere else.

Hanging out with friends is usually the go-to here at JMU. You can go to parties if you are into that, but it's okay if you aren't! There's plenty of other things to do, too. For example, you can walk down town to Clemintine's a delicious restaurant. There's a place called Cat's Cradle where you can hang out with adoptable cats! Grafton-Stovall theatre and the planetarium are always playing cool movies, too. Of course, there is TDU, equip with a stage for student run shows/coffee houses, pool tables, an old school Juke Box.... and everything! You cannot run out of things to do.

    Food and Dining

JMU food is rated 2nd best in the nation. Need I say more? There's an array of all kinds, from Chinese to deli sandwiches and it's all great. Dining services is also awesome at listening to what the students have to say. Don't be afraid to give feedback. Try out Red Mango Froyo at Top Dog, too! IT'S ALL SO GREAT! They have healthy options too which is perfect for those who are health conscious.

    Dorm Life

If you land a sweet dorm like Wayland or Hoffman, you will be spoiled as far as dorms go. A lot of the dorms don't have AC or Wifi, but Hoffman has both of these, and Wayland has AC as well. The good trade off is that if you don't get to live in Hoffman or Wayland, most of the other dorms around campus are much bigger and have an even better sense of community. For example, the way the village is laid out, everyone is in close proximity to each other, but you still get your own space. RAs at JMU are extremely awesome and understanding. So are Hall Directors. If you have any roommate problems, they are always willing to get on top of the situation and help you out. The common areas of the dorms are also really fun places to hang out and do homework, play pool or watch TV. Dorm life is definitely tight living, but the experience is a needed one and a fabulous one.

    Academic Rigor

Anyone who says JMU is an easy school would be lying to you. The rigor of the class depends entirely on the teacher, not even necessarily the subject. You may be enrolled in GPHIL101 and find it really easy, while your roommate may take it with a different teacher and find it impossible. Like any other school, you're going to have to study a lot more than you may have had to in high school, but that's okay! The things you learn in class, especially Gen Eds, are usually really interesting. You will have a plethora of easy fun classes, hard boring classes, fun hard classes and easy boring classes! At the end, just know that you are learning constantly and becoming more scholarly every day, even if it doesn't feel like it. Keep your head up. JMU isn't an easy school, but what you learn can be an amazing experience.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be afraid to be social with anyone and everyone at JMU. All of us are friendly and know how terrifying it can be to get social. College is so much more different than high school because you aren't being judged in the same ways, there's no pressure to fit a stereotype, and everyone knows you are shaping who you want to be for the rest of your life- so mistakes and experimenting with classes and social situations are all completely expected. Bottom line, just be you and get out there! Try joining a club or organization. Join our beloved marching band. Don't play an instrument? You won't be the only one. Just GET OUT of your dorm and LIVE. Always be open to all types of people, because we are a very accepting university. Also, visit all of the dining places you can! All of the food at JMU is amazing.

    In three sentences

JMU provides all students with the fundamentals needed to be a strong, independent, respectable and tolerant person through its General Education courses. The faculty, staff and students at JMU are all extremely friendly and always willing to help or listen to others in need. Lastly, the community surrounding JMU is a tight knit community that always unconditionally supports the students as well as supports us in our future goals.

    Campus Safety

I feel safe walking around campus whenever, whether I'm by myself or with a group of friends. Besides, the Dog Pound (the snack bar) is open til 2AM on weekends! If you're worried for whatever reason, you can have someone escort you wherever you're going. And if you're out partying til the wee hours, you can call Saferides to take you home.

Seniors typically streak the Quad and steal a couple of the bricks from the sidewalk. There are also said to be tunnels underneath, which I have yet to explore...

    What to do for fun

Join a club, eat out, see a film, hear a band, PARTY. Seriously, that's what a lot of people do. If you want to ski, that's a pretty popular option in the winter, too.

    Food and Dining

JMU has awesome food. Ask anyone.

    Dorm Life

I live in the Bluestone area, which is much nicer than some of the other dorms, if only because it has AC. But there are only a few sweltering weeks before you don't even miss it!

    Academic Rigor

Thus far, my classes have been difficult but not overbearing. That said, I have yet to take a math or science class, which seems to be much more challenging for other students.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are shy and worried about being a part of this huge community, don't be! There is so much going on and everyone is glad to be able to meet you. And if you are an extrovert, you will certainly thrive here!

    In three sentences

One of the things you'll hear is, We open doors for people, and this is very true; JMU welcomes anyone and everyone, and be prepared to communicate with them all! The community is wonderful, and I have yet to be in a class where I felt the professors didn't care. Yes, there are some that are 100+ people, but I find this to be much more uncommon and you still learn as long as you do the work.

    Greek Life

Definitely increasing. If you want to be in it there are plenty of options, if you don't it doesn't end your chance of a social life.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many different clubs, I learn about a new one every week.

Kissing Rock- if you kiss a person on it you are destined to get engaged

    Bang for the buck

Rated one of the Best Values. State/ Public school tuition for VA residents.

    What to do for fun

JMU is known for being a party school, which is true. But there are so many alternatives; comedy shows, concerts, pool hall on campus, great restaurants or discount movie theater to name some.

    Food and Dining

Dining is ranked in the top 5 nation wide! JMU has everything from grab and go food inside the academic halls to 2 major dining halls with all you can eat buffets.

    Dorm Life

There are a lot of different options for living, take your tours seriously and decide which style would be best for you. Suite style is a really great atmosphere, it is like having a living room to share with roommates.

    Academic Rigor

JMU has incredible professors and plenty of resources to help students when struggling. All professors have office hours, teacher assistant's office hours plus there are tutoring centers.

    Tips for prospective students

Use ALL the resources JMU offers at the beginning, everything is useful. The first week there may seem silly at first with all the orientation weeks, but you really do make friends for the rest of your time there. AP credits are awesome to skip repeat information in lower level classes.

    In three sentences

JMU is everything it claims to be; a great community with amazing academics and has opportunities for everyone. It has a large student body, but it never feels overwhelming. The campus is large, but I have never had a problem getting where I needed to go on the bus or just walking.

    Campus Safety

There are lights everywhere, and campus police is out and about at night, so it always feel safe.

    Clubs and Activities

There are around 400 thing that you can join and you can always create something new as well. There is something for everyone, even though that sounds cheesy.

Great for these types of students

Anyone who enjoys a beautiful campus and anyone who enjoys talking to people. It is definitely a very social campus, and we all hold the doors for each other.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The kissing rock on the quad is a special thing on campus. When it was an all girls school, girls would hide behind the rock with their boyfriends to kiss goodnight so that the house-mother would not see them. It's said that if you and your significant other kiss there, you will end up getting married.

    What to do for fun

There are always activities on the weekends and other things throughout the week. There are outdoor school-wide events, music nights, late-night breakfasts, just to name a few.

    Food and Dining

We have the number 2 food in the country! It is really good and there are so many different places to eat, and so many different types of food.

    Dorm Life

The dorms could definitely be better with their internet reliability, but that is the only negative thing about them. They are always very clean, and they are very easy to make comfortable. Making friends in the dorms is also very easy because of the activities that are held throughout the year and during the week before classes start in the fall for freshman.

    Academic Rigor

There are definitely schools that have harder academics, but JMU is definitely up there in rigor. Some classes seem fairly easy, but there are others that seem almost impossible. Studying can take up a lot of time because of the difficult material in many classes.

    Tips for prospective students

I think an important thing you should try to do is study between your classes and on the weekends. Partying may seem like a more fun option than studying, but if you space out when you study during the week and earlier in the day, you can still have fun too! Also, go to professors office hours. They with help you out a lot!

    In three sentences

JMU is an amazing university with an incredible amount of opportunities for all types of students. The whole community is so kind and caring, and they all like to help out in any way they can. Along with the great classes and professors, there is the gorgeous campus!

UREC is a great place to go for fun, you can exercise and make friends at the same time. Downtown is within a walking distance and there are many restaurants and places to hang out in. If you're a cats lover there's cat's cradle where you can pet and hang out with lots of cats.

    Food and Dining

Lots of different places around campus to eat. Food all over campus varies, from salads, pizza, Mongolian Grill; there is a place for everyone here.

    Dorm Life

Again, people are very friendly and parties are always going on off campus. Dorms are pretty cozy and you will easily feel like home.

    Academic Rigor

Classes are good and interesting. I think all classes are easy as long as you study and focus on that.

    Tips for prospective students

Keep an open mind and be friendly. You will also see many international students like myself. Don't let parties distract you from school, there will be time for everything. Hold doors open for other people because it is a tradition.

    In three sentences

Awesome school with incredibly big campus, nice and friendly people who are always willing to help. There is always something going on around campus so involvement opportunities are unlimited. Both classes and teachers are great.

From famous comedian shows to local bands, karaoke on Thursday's and frisbee on the Quad, music festivals to themed 5k runs, JMU offers plenty of extracurricular activities to keep the pickiest of people satisfied. Check out JMU's schedule of events to see what's coming up!

Craving a late night snack, like ice cream or chips? JMU has you covered. Chinese food? Done. Crepes? You got it. I could go on and on, but you get the point. JMU's food is unbeatable, this past year it was rated #2 best on campus food (in the country)!

    Dorm Life

You've probably heard how awful dorm life is at other colleges, but not at JMU. The people you live with your freshman year will be your second family by the end of the first semester! The dorms are clean and relatively spacious. No matter where you live on campus, there is always a great perk... whether in be the perfect location (the Village), dorms with air-conditioning (Bluestone), or a magnificent view (Skyline)!

    Academic Rigor

Get ready to learn (and I mean really learn!) You get to pick classes that you're actually interested in and learn about certain topics in breadth and depth, as they like to say at JMU. Don't stress out though if you think college will be too hard! I promise you, if you work hard and put in the effort, it will certainly pay off.

    Tips for prospective students

Be yourself! Get ready to meet different types of people from every walk of life. If you're shy and think you might not make friends, you're in for a surprise. Everyone I have encountered at JMU is friendly, compassionate, and understanding. Freshman are respected around here! I promise!

    In three sentences

James Madison University is a home away from home. From professors to students, nothing compares to the charisma and love of learning exhibited by both groups of people. To top it all off, JMU is located in one of the most beautiful locations in the country, the Shenandoah valley!
