Categories Comments Great for these types of students Lake State is surrounded by wildreness. It is great or the outdoorsy type. If you are laid back and love being outside, you will fit in fine. There are several differnt types of people here, but you wouldn't be hard pressed to find a guy with a neon orange hat and a camo coat on.
Tips for prospective students Come on up for a visit. You'll love the UP! It is so beautiful. However, if you cannot handle the cold, maybe this school is not right for you.
Bang for the buck There are a lot of fun and good things at Lake State. You learn a lot. My experience, knowledge, and time spent here has been priceless and memorable.
Am enjoying being here Sault Ste Marie is a lovely place to be. I love that when I am wearing Laker apparel throughout the city, random community members will stike up a conversation with you and you will end up talking for an hour. On campus, upperclassmen are extremely helpful and kind. Students in my class are equally kind and wonderful. People are really easy to get along with. From massive snowball fights on Brady lawn to a game of Apples to Apples in Osborn lobby to Laker hockey games in the arena, there is always something to do if you look hard enough.
Am learning a lot The professors at this university really take interest in who you are and in what you hope to accomplish at Lake State. It seems as though they acknowledge their role as a TEACHer and genuinely want to do their job.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Nursing students, Fire Science students, CJ students, Fishers students, and some select others.
Tips for prospective students Try and spread out your Gen Ed's for the summer if you're planning on leasing off campus, that way you can take time on your major classes without feeling overwhemled with needed extras. Also, as of right now (2009 - 2010 school year), you'll pay a flat rate for credits. So whether you take 12 or 17 credits, you're paying the same amount. This would be the college to take that yoga class, or to learn to scuba dive. You'll enjoy it, and it'll be a stress reliever. Plus, you're already paying for it.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you're not afraid of a lot of snow at one time and like being outdoors this would be a great college.
Tips for prospective students Come and tour the campus. I toured the campus a couple times before I decided to attend. It's small so you can find your classes easily and fast. The campus is in a city but there are a lot of wilderness to be discovered too.
Am enjoying being here I love the upper peninsula. This is a small campus and I come from a small town so it isn't so overwhelming.
Am learning a lot The student to professor ratio is really good so you get to do a lot of one on one with your professor. It's helping me learn the material and then some extra.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Students entering mechanical engineering, chemistry, fisheries and wildlife this is a great college for you!
Tips for prospective students If you're fine with a small town, lot's of hockey, and cold winter's you'll feel right at home.
Am enjoying being here I love the outdoors, and if you do too then you'll love it here! It's a small friendly campus with lots of campus activities.
Academic Rigor No matter what university you attend, if you don't keep up with your studies you will not succeed. The professors are not that demanding, some majors are more difficult than others but typically the work that is assigned helps with comprehension and mastery of your studies.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck Like some colleges now there join with Barnes and nobles for a rent-o-book thing. Which I think is awesome that students and get there text books for a lot less.
Will enjoy being here I believe that I'll ready enjoy being at this school. When I visited it with my family both of my sisters as that they could see me being there. Also to me at less it had a ready home feel. But that just me.
Will learn a lot I love that they differ things at this school than others. One being the hunting, and fishing cleaning. I also like the fact that they had a shooting range. I think that it is very important that they tools that students can use for what there career may be. See I want to go in did a criminal justice so a think that it an amazing that they have many different types of law officers at and around that campus site. The school also has many historical to visit.

Categories Comments Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus sault ste. marie michigan hosts the i500 (large snowmobile race) every february and it brings the whole town together as well as many students from campus. the i500 has become a town tradition. the d1 hockey team also brings the whole town together on game nights to support them. it's a great family atmosphere when the town comes together.
What to do for fun there are many outdoor activities for the adventurer. we have many private owned restaurantes with great food selection. there is a bowling alley and movie theater within five minutes of campus. not to mention the scenery of the up that makes for a great road trip. there is always something to do up here.
Tips for prospective students come visit the school and talk to students you see walking around. all the students here believe that the beliefs of this small school are what drew them here. the small class sizes and interactive campus make it easy to meet new people and create lifelong friendships.
In three sentences lake state is a small and interactive campus that is focused on a learning environment. it is personable and everyone knows everyone on campus, or they at least recognize them. it is a very worthwhile school to attend, i love the opportunities i have been given that bigger universities may not have been able to give me.

Categories Comments What to do for fun there are some things to do for fun. some examples are to go out bowling, go to a hotel and swim, and go to the student activities center and play sports or work out. if you don't enjoy that kind of stuff then the school does offer many other things such as movie nights and they also have an area to play board games, pool and foosball.
Food and Dining the food is alright in the cafeteria. there are many places to eat through out campus though. many of the places have good food. the only thing that makes the food not the best in the cafeteria would be that there isn't mach variety though out the year, but other then that the food is pretty good.
Dorm Life the dorm life on campus is fun. there are always events that the ras have planned everything from a scavenger hunt to a trip to the bowling alley. you form a close knit family with everyone in the dorm. the dorm are split so that the girls live in osborn for the first year and the guys live in brady. then the next year they become co-ed so that the girls and guys live in the same building.
Academic Rigor this school is pretty academically rigorous. you have to make sure you study just like any college. there are some classes that are more difficult that others but it really just depends on how dedicated you are to studying to the grade and difficultly to which you have in the class.
Tips for prospective students a tip for a prospective student is to always use your resources when you get there. all of the teachers are willing to help you no matter what and also to use the learning center. the learning center is a place to get help with everything from you everyday work to studying for an exam and writing papers. it is a very helpful and useful place on campus.
In three sentences it is a fun, close college. if you need any help with anything you can get it. they always have people there to help you with any problems and you always have friends around you to help you also.

Categories Comments Campus Safety It is a very safe campus and if anything were to happen there is easy access to help all around you.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Each year Lake State always has the Banished Words List that is known nationwide and Snowman Burning right before the Spring.
What to do for fun I will ride my bike or walk downtown Sault Ste. Marie and spend the afternoon at the Soo Locks and view ships pass through.
Food and Dining The food offered gives a wide variety of selections and there is always something unique to choose from.
Dorm Life The dorms were cozy and warm through the cold winter and the beds were amazing and better than the one I had at home. I didn't want to leave for some of those reasons.
Academic Rigor The academics are challenging, but very difficult if no effort is put into it like anything.
Tips for prospective students Take advantage of every opportunity within the University from fun school activities to the on-campus jobs because you will have some great experiences and stories to tell later.
In three sentences I would rate Lake Superior State as a good, close-knit University with an opportunity to meet most of the students there and accomplish your goals there without the big-city distraction. One is able to focus and achieve as a student at Lake Superior State University.

Categories Comments Greek Life The best part of any other activity outside of academics to me is Greek Life. There is a different level of friendship and a lot of opportunities to volunteer and give back. Also, it is something that looks great on a resume.
Clubs and Activities There is a lot of fun clubs to engage in and to get involved on campus. There is many opportunities to hold positions and to climb the ranks of an organization.
What to do for fun The on campus activities are there if you look. The activities Board puts on events every month whether it be comedians or coffee house performers. The hockey games are a popular staple for our student sports.
Food and Dining I personally am not a fan of the dining areas and the food they provide, although the dining areas are undergoing a huge renovation this summer, we will see how it turns out. The food could offer a lot more healthy options and cheaper options for students in the campus store. I also think that if you live on campus in the town house and have a full kitchen they should give you the option of whether or not you want to have a meal plan.
Dorm Life The dorms are out-dated and need to be revamped. The RA's on campus do a great job enforcing the rules, but Lake State is unlike many other campus' and I think they need to revisit the college experience they are trying to create for students. I think that the main reason people transfer is because of dorm life and the benefits other schools offer.
Academic Rigor In the current program I am studying I can see some improvements that need to be put into place. I believe that a lot of the professors need an upgrade as well. There is a lot of great programs they just need a little improving.
Tips for prospective students Get involved in your education, with your studies, and your extracurricular activities. Work for your education by getting a job to pay for the things that you want/need and learn independence from your parents.
In three sentences Small campus, great for forming responsibility and becoming involved on campus. Professors take an interest in their students, easy to talk to them and schedule appointments during office hours, and know students on a name-by-name basis.

In three sentences LSSU is a small school with a large atmosphere full of opportunities. With smaller classrooms, it creates an easier learning environment where you can ask questions and receive answers instantly. It is a great university with the friendliest people!

Categories Comments Campus Safety Public Safety is a requirement for all Criminal Justice majors to do, so we have plenty of people on duty watching out for others.
Greek Life There are a few fraternities and a few sororities, they aren't nationally known, and no one feels as though they have to be a part of one, so it isn't as big a deal as at most colleges.
Clubs and Activities There is just about any club or activity you would want to be in, they are small though. Intramurial sports are great and they offer a wide variety of differents sports ranging from basketball to broomball.
Great for these types of students Students who want to live on a small campus where you can easily walk to all your classes, and for students who are interested in majoring in the fields of criminal justice or fire fighting mainly.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The annual Burning of the Snowman at the end of winter to welcome the summer happens on campus in front of the dining hall.
Bang for the buck Lake Superior State University is the price of a community college, but for all the academic rigor and reputation of a University college.
What to do for fun The Norris Center has a very large, nice gym/workout area with a track, baseball batting area, wrestling area, and indoor basketball and tennis courts, and an ice rink and swimming pool. Canada is less than a mile away across the bridge, and there are restaurants, and a movie theater, and bowling alley to go to with friends or on a date.
Food and Dining There are only a few places on campus to eat, but off campus there are some pretty nice places to dine.
Dorm Life The freshman dorms are a bit crowded, but after that the living areas get a lot more spacious.
Academic Rigor Smaller classes from 15 to 100 people per class calls for students to work harder because the professors will know who is slacking.
Tips for prospective students Lake Superior is the college for you if you want to major in any type of Criminal Justice, or Fire Fighting, Physical Therapy, Wildlife Conservation, ect. and the size of the school is perfect for those looking to be more personal with professors, and get better help finding a career.
In three sentences Lake Superior State University has a community college, small town atmosphere with all the advantages of being a University. The professors have a lot of knowledge on the subjects they teach, and since it's such a small school they can personally help you with any of your needs. The weather is great for those looking for winter-time fun such as snowboarding, skiing, and iceskating.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Outdoorsy hockey-lovers who don't mind snow or small towns. Fisheries and Wildlife Management, Engineering, Criminal Justice, and Fire Science majors.
Bang for the buck LSSU has some generous merit scholarships to go towards an already low cost to attend. It's the size of a private school for the price of a public school.
Food and Dining Edible when I was there, but nothing out of this world.
Dorm Life Community bathrooms in the row houses and freshmen dorms.
Academic Rigor Some programs are better/harder than others.
Tips for prospective students Visit the campus, watch a ship go through the Soo Locks, go to a hockey game, eat in the Quarterdeck, and meet with an academic adviser. LSSU's advisers are usually professors in your major, not just counselors, so they can be a fountain of knowledge. Fisheries management students should also visit the Aquatic Research Lab.
In three sentences Friendly people. Small campus. Cold winters.

Food and Dining newly renovated cafeteria!
Dorm Life I have never lived in the dorms, but I haven't heard of many complaints
Tips for prospective students Get involved in college events, clubs, and sports. Its a great way to get to know people on campus and to be a part of your school.
In three sentences Lake State is a smaller college, but has a great location. All of the buildings are fairly close together so it does not take long to walk to classes. The class rooms are big enough to hold a room of students comfortably and the classes are not over packed so it makes it easier to get to know/be known by the professor.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Public Safety is everywhere. They issue parking tickets like no ones business. They're there for all the students at anytime of the day.
Greek Life Greek life is an amazing opportunity. Definitely join a fraternity or sorority. Here at Lake State we don't have many options but we are expanding. There was actually a new fraternity created this semester. It's an awesome group to be apart of. You meet tons of people and do different events to help out others and the community, while creating a special bond with your brothers and sisters
Clubs and Activities There's over 100 clubs on campus. I highly suggest to join one and get involved. It'll keep you busy, you'll make more friends, and you'll overall be a happier student.
Great for these types of students Any student who loves wildlife, the outdoors, fishing, hunting, etc this is the school for you.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus After every hockey game the Laker's win they run outside dressed in gear and ring the victory bell.
Bang for the buck Frank's Place in town is an amazing place to eat. You get a lot of food for a little bit of money.
What to do for fun There's so many opportunities to have fun in the Sault believe it or not. Canada is less than 2 minutes away and there are excellent dining places and two shopping malls right off the boarder. Here in the American side of town we have tons of different restaurants and bars, along with a night club. Everyone loves to get sav nasty friday and saturday nights. Greek life is also really fun. The more involved you are with the school the more you'll enjoy your time here at Lake State. I love going to school here. I think it's a wonderful atmosphere to be in.
Food and Dining Food is one area of improvement. There are two main places on campus to eat the Quarterdeck and the Galley. You're never going to know what to expect with food from the Quarterdeck. The Galley on the other hand is a grille and you choose what you'd like.
Dorm Life Dorm life is so much fun! Even though freshman dorms are slip between girls and guys resident halls you're still going to make memories that will last forever with both sexes in these halls.
Academic Rigor Lake Superior has excellent academics and I wish to see more students come here for specific majors.
Tips for prospective students Take college seriously. Yes, go away and have a good time but don't slack with school work
In three sentences Lake Superior State University is an outstanding school both extracurricular and academic wise. The Student Government always puts different events on which any student can participate in thus making schooling worth while. Everyone is extremely nice, professors are willing to actually help you and go through exams and preparation with you.
