Loras is a great liberal arts college. I love the variety of classes they have and how challenging each class is. The people are friendly although there are a lot of sports jocks. The teachers have been incredibly caring and understanding and really help students that are in need.

Depending on your major, the work load can be tough.

    What to do for fun

There are numerous sporting events to attend on campus and many events put on by our College Activities Board. Dance Marathon is a huge event that happens once a year at Loras that is a lot of fun. There is a mall, numerous restaurants, and a few parks close by as well.

    Food and Dining

The food is average. There is quite a bit of variety, as there is a buffet-style cafe, the pub, and the market, where you can get coffee and smoothies as well as frozen food and snacks.

    Dorm Life

The residence halls are very comfortable at Loras. Most of the time, it seems like everyone has there doors open. There is a basement and a lobby in almost every residence hall where groups of people can get together.

    Academic Rigor

Certain classes at Loras are more challenging than others. If you do your homework, study for tests and quizzes, and actually put effort into the class, you will be fine. Teachers are always friendly and willing to help!

    Tips for prospective students

If you are thinking about attending Loras College, make sure you explore the campus and go on an over-night visit. It is also a good idea to sit in on a couple of classes geared towards first-year students.

    In three sentences

I absolutely love Loras College. The campus is pretty small, but it is easy to feel at home here where the students and faculty are all very friendly and welcoming. There are plently of activities to get involved in at Loras College ranging from sports activities to academic clubs.

    In three sentences

It's a great homy feeling type of college. It has one of the best teaching programs in the area, which is what I'm majoring in. Also it's great of the technology that is used, in fact when I go, my class will be the first ones to get the brand new laptop/tablet computers

    Campus Safety

Security officers are around, but they aren't in your face all the time.

    Greek Life

I don't know anything about the greek life at Loras.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs around Loras. I believe we have over fourty to choose from, I would personally recommend Mock Trial, the coach is amazing. Judo is also fun.

Great for these types of students

Social, education oriented, pretty much any student can find a place at Loras.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

We have zombies vs humans when people wear bandannas and 'tag' each other if they are zombies. I didn't play this year because of a bad knee, but it looks really fun.

    Bang for the buck

I love everything about Loras. The best part is how nice the professors are. They are willing to help any time one needs them.

    What to do for fun

The CAB office comes up with a lot of fun activities for students. In the past year we have had comedians, lazer tag, game nights, zombies vs humans, movie nights, and much more. They also have a dance marathon every year for children at St Jude's, that's really fun I've heard.

    Food and Dining

It's not the best food, but its pretty good. We just got a papa johns pizza place, so that's pretty neat. And oddly enough, the cafeteria is good.

    Dorm Life

I live off campus, so I do not know much about the dorm life. But because I live off campus, I miss a lot of things.

    Academic Rigor

Loras is not too challenging, however, it is still challenging enough. There is a lot of papers to write, but it's manageable if you make sure to watch your time. You get what grade you want by working for it.

    Tips for prospective students

Ask about shortcuts. There are many ways to get around campus, but you have to find them. Make sure to also schedule time for yourself, or else you will burn out.

    In three sentences

I love going to Loras. The professors are very knowledgeable and great at what they do, teaching! The only 'bad' thing about Loras is that it is not a very good campus for those with physical disabilities.

    Campus Safety

Very safe. There is always a security guard in all the dorms. The security guards walk around campus or ride around campus. There is also a number that students can have to call any time if they need assistance walking around campus late at night. And the plus is that the security guards are very friendly and willing to get to know students!

    Greek Life

Only two and they're for girls. The guys greek life is in the working though!

Great for these types of students

If a student is looking for a small school, with a family feel this would be the greatest option! If it's far from home this will become a second home because that is how friendly everyone is especially when it comes to around the holidays because everyone's homes are always open.

    Bang for the buck

EXPENSIVE! But honestly worth the education and is well known.

    What to do for fun

Mississippi River, campus sports teams, Dance Marathon, volunteering, going to other campuses and meeting new people. The campus has a field where when it is nice out most people will be out playing soccer, football, catch, frisbee, etc.

    Food and Dining

It's like any other campus cafeteria. It's a buffet style and has many options, including healthy options. Sometimes better off going to outside sources but college students are always on tight budgets so students just deal with the cafeteria. (The ice cream is the best, along with the cookies!)

    Dorm Life

Only thing worthwhile about dorm life is the people you meet and how easily able everyone is able to hangout. Living in the dorms is the smartest idea ever especially freshman year! Beckman Hall is the best dorm hall for freshman and everyone always has their doors open with smilng faces and welcoming to talk.

    Academic Rigor

It is difficult, but as long as you study hard and understand and connect with all opportunites needed to help get through a class, then academics should be no big deal. Study groups are usually always around and people are always welcome to help each other if someone is stuck in a class.

    Tips for prospective students

Keep an open mind to everything and everyone you meet. There are other colleges in about at least a 10 mile radius so there are plenty of people to get to know and talk to. Teachers always want to be involved when it comes to their students and no student should be afraid to talk to professors. Getting involved is the easiest and greatest way to meet new people and do things you probably thought you could never do or even thought of doing.

    In three sentences

Loras College is an amazing college! If someone is into a small campus and a family feel, this would be the best school to go to! Everyone says hello and there is always something to do, whether it is on campus or off campus.

    Campus Safety

Personally, I have never experienced a dangerous situation. Campus safety makes it easy to call them 24/7 to give you a ride to your residence hall or wherever you need to go. i think the system could be improved by having campus security in each dorm building parking lot. Overall, it is appreciated by all that campus security is available.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs and activities to get involved in at Loras. In the beginning of the school year, there is an activities fair which showcases each activity and the chairs of the clubs to explain it and promote it. They offer treats and brochures to try to get you involved. There are things like philosophy club, to college activity board, to dance marathon, theater, math club, business club, one fraternity, one sorority, Christian clubs, and international club. Whatever you show an interest in, there is probably a club for it. Many of them are made to fit in your interests and your major... For example, media studies majors often choose to be involved in LCTV (Loras College Television) and practice broadcasting the show. So much to do!

Great for these types of students

    Open-minded

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Every Monday, we have common time from 11-12:30 where no classes are scheduled. Usually, there are common time events such as an activities fair, study abroad fair, pep rally, and things like that. It allows for students to gather all at one time.

    Bang for the buck

Loras is a laptop campus... we get new laptops freshman year and an upgrade junior year. We have the option at graduation to keep them for a low price. It is great because you know all technology is the same and if you experience technical issues, the tech center will take care of it immediately at no charge to you. You really get a lot out of it and it makes it easier on students and professors when uploading files...they all come from the same type of software. Think of how expensive it is to have to buy a new laptop plus all of its equipment, and to wait for it to be fixed if something is wrong....it takes all of that hassle away and the laptops are nice and brand new.

    What to do for fun

In your residence halls, RA's always have fun activities in the basement or in the lobby such as cupcakes, girls' nights, game night, dance lessons, and tea nights. It is a great way to get to know more students and make new friends. Also, many students attend the athletic events (for free with student ID) to support their fellow Duhawks. Students get really into the games and have spirit nights with themes for the student section. Also, for more relaxed fun, outside of the Duhawk market has couches and tables perfect for getting together with friends and having coffee or for a little relaxed studying or playing games.

    Food and Dining

All freshmen are required to purchase the Gold meal plan... the most expensive one. It includes unlimited meal swipes to the cafeteria plus 250 Duhawk Dollars which is your student ID used as a debit card for food in the mini market/grocery store (where food prices are HIGH; 12 oz cereal is $7) per semester. The food is pretty good. Breakfast items include cereal (brand name), yogurt, fruit, omelets, eggs, bacon, sausage, tater tots, pancakes, etc. Lunch and dinner usually includes pizza, pasta, sandwich station, salad bar, Asian food station, taco station, American foods like burgers and hot dogs, soups, etc. It is really great for cafeteria food, and there are always plenty of desserts, including an ice cream machine.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is overall not horrible. (I live in Beckman Hall, the most common co-ed dorm for freshmen). The biggest thing you need to know is how to share and be considerate. Most rooms are doubles, and 95% of the building has a roommate. There are probably 8 single suites, but having a roommate is the best way to meet new people and come out of your shell. You get a sink with mirror, closet, desk, and chair. It is best to get a lofted bed (conveniently possible to order through the school) for more space. It is a small dorm but you don't feel unable to breathe. Bathrooms are community bathrooms with a row of curtained showers which are very small. It isn't horrible, but I always miss my comfortable shower back home where it is very private. Bathrooms are clean, but I recommend shower shoes always.

    Academic Rigor

Loras is a tough college. Teachers, most of the time, take attendance and it does impact your grade. Classes are small enough so that teachers notice and they do not show mercy if you are struggling due to missing class (for no reason). Professors are often doctors of their field, so you know you are getting a good education. Surprisingly, not many of them require busy work, or extra long papers (even as an English major). Here, concise, quality work is valued over pages and pages of rambling. This is a school where you academically discipline yourself and professors are tough on you in order to make you live up to your full academic potential.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are to choose this college, understand that being prepared is the most important thing along with planning ahead. For example, register for classes you know relate to your major and you get credit for them: this means getting to the earliest orientation possible to get into your required classes. Registering for semester classes and J-term is very stressful if you don't plan ahead and have a plan B, C, and D. Also, if you choose to come here, get involved! There are a lot of activities you can be involved in and the great thing about the small-sized school is that you can be involved in more than one. It really is the greatest opportunity to meet new people.

    In three sentences

Loras College has a lot of school spirit and believes in the tradition Duhawks help Duhawks, meaning, alumni help those current students and students help each other...like a family. Loras has a very strict academic system, but homework is manageable. The CEL office of the school is determined to get each student who wants it the opportunities of an internship in their field in order to gain experience while at school and be a step ahead of their graduating class.
