Great for these types of students

The kind that feel out of place. All of us here are dreamers and searchers just looking for other people like us. Many of us have lived completely different lives before realizing how much more there is and changing completely. It's not perfect, but the adventure and love that is here makes any small faults meaningless. I love it.

    Tips for prospective students

Come to a visitors weekend! It's like a little sneak peak of what it's like to be here. Trust me, you won't want to leave.

    Bang for the buck

When you first see the 30,000 a year price tag you may freak out BUT it's really easy to get 20,000 of that paid for without loans just in federal aid. So that immediately reduces it to 10,000 and once you have loans and work-study it's paid for. They work with you really well too. Don't let money stop you!

    Am enjoying being here

I can't imagine going to any other college. The people here are amazing and the friendships you'll make are truly once in a lifetime. There is no other place like this.

    Am learning a lot

All classes are on the block system here, so we have one class a month and then change. Which is great because you never get bored or feel unsatisfied in a class for an extended period of time.

    Campus Safety

The campus safety has some really nice people and they are very quick if you lock yourself out of your room, or have any other need. Its a small town and not much crime there. The campus is nice and I felt safe walking around campus even in the winter when it got dark early. The campus safety has been very great with keeping the students informed of any events that may or have occurred at the campus. The biggest threat on campus is the Iowa weather.

    Greek Life

None, this is a Vedic culture based school

    Clubs and Activities

There is a lot of different clubs to join with a wide range of activities. The school has a nice indoor rec center that features tennis courts, basketball courts as well as weights, and a rock climbing wall that is impressive.

Great for these types of students

Students who are into the alternative learning should check out the school before attending to get a feel for what the school is about.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Meditation hall in every dorm for meditation at 7am and evening meditation at 5pm.

    Bang for the buck

The school is very heavy into the Vedic culture and i recommend anyone who plans on attending to read up on some of the Vedic culture and prepare themselves for the school by doing a visitors weekend. This is school is not for everyone and again any student interested should do their research.

    What to do for fun

The town square has many local shops for food and other shopping needs. Its a small town and many shops close at 5pm or are closed on sundays. The town square has an event called First Friday of the month, and many local vendors and shops stay open late and live bands play at the center of the square.

    Food and Dining

The dinning hall is all vegetarian with vegan options and the school gives a brief overview and intro into shifting to an all vegetarian diet, however i feel that they should spend more time talking about this as it can be very hard for some people to make the transition. Beware of the freshmen 15! the 15 lbs that you will put on just eating there while living on campus as many students experience.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are getting better and is still a work in progress (2012/2013) as there has been mold issues in the dorms. The rooms are set with a twin bed, closet, counter, and a sink. The showers and Toilets are all common area. The school has invested a bit of money into renovating the buildings and putting in more mold control. The school has been open and up front with this issue and they have taken the time to answer students concerns with the projects.

    Academic Rigor

This really depends the professor themselves as i have had some really relaxed professors and some very ridged ones too. There is a dress code at the school and is really only enforced by the professors. The exceptions of course are classes like plant biology, shop, and any other classes that spend a lot of time outside or in a shop.

    Tips for prospective students

If your into exploring consciousness, and want a education thats based in consciousness, then this university is for you. However one needs to realized that this university is very Vedic knowledge orientated and may not be for everyone. The school does offer visitor weekends so prospective students can get a feel for it. The cost is $50 for the visitor weekend and this includes a free shuttle from the airport, lodging at the school, meals, and a shuttle ride to the airport. If you are going to live on campus, fyi, the dorms are very strict on being drug, alcohol, and tobacco free. Many of the students who attend the school are very focused on being drug and alcohol free while learning and practicing meditation. Also the town of Fairfield Iowa is a very small town and once you see it you will understand. Fyi for cell phones, Sprint doesn't work very well and your fancy phone will be an expensive paper weight, AT&T is a little better but not by much, Verizon works well their and seems to be the top dog in that town. Living off campus is not expensive as many of the rental prices seem to be between $200-$450/month, and there is a lot of housing close to the school.

    In three sentences

Maharishi University of Management is a small University that is very rich in Vedic knowledge and culture. The University features one class at a time with an emphasis on consciousness based education, and also using meditation to help reduce stress with classes. Campus Safety

The campus is very safe, Fairfield is a safe and friendly town.

    Greek Life

    None.

    Clubs and Activities

These are hard to get started and keep the interest of the students. Because class time is so long and you add homework, jobs, etc on top of that it is just a little difficult to keep clubs going. The school does however keep a pretty open mind for those who want to start clubs and depending on the circumstances even may offer financial assistance to clubs.

Great for these types of students

Those looking to expand their selves as well as their consciouness levels. You will eat healthy and learn a lot about yourself while you are here. Check out a visitors weekend.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Every semester there is what is called a rounding or forrest academy. Which is a set period of time (4 days or so) set aside for relaxation, meditation and yoga practice. Because this is a meditation school and you should expect to meditate in morning and afternoon class sessions.

    Bang for the buck

Because of the lack life-style it is easy to fall behind in some classes. Which can leave you with a feeling like you have ripped yourself off. So make sure to make the most of your experience as well as your time here.

    What to do for fun

Grab a friend with a car and go shopping in another town! Maybe stay in Fairfield and enjoy an organic meal at a local restaurant. Make family dinners with your close friends, host movie nights, arrange interest meetings for people with like interests, etc.

    Food and Dining

The food can get boring at times. However, the meals are usually very good and the cafeteria focuses on all organic/Maharishi Ayurvedic selections. There are always hot foods, a nice salad bar, homemade soups, tons of spices, organic and organic soy milk, tea, sandwhiches, etc. There is a lot of room for creativity in the dining hall. Your room and board covers your 3 daily meals Sat-Fri and 2 meals on Sundays.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are old, moldy and have a ton of bugs. Iowa life! However, you do get your own individual room, set with shelves, a bed, usually 2 desks, large closets and there are TV rooms on every floor. There is also a quiet hour that goes from 9:30pm to 9:30am. There is also key/lock only entry doors, if you get locked out you can call campus security at any time. There is also a kitchen to use full of equipment to use as long as you clean up after yourself. Coin operated washing/drying machines.

    Academic Rigor

The school has a very lax feeling about it, so a lot of the time you are on your own with your studies. The teachers and staff are understanding when life events happen. Sometimes the weekly subject matter are easier than the exams, so study hard!

    Tips for prospective students

Fairfield is a very small town with very little job opportunities and does not offer a lot in the entertainment field. However, you will make lasting friendships fast and enjoy the small yet pretty town of Fairfield. The whole town is great and full of fun, energetic, talented and caring people. You have class 6 days a week. M-F 10a-3:15p (1 hour lunch) and Sat (10a-12p). Long hours!

    In three sentences

You will get the opportunity to grow as a person at this school. The age rage of students is a melting pot of sorts. There is a very diverse and welcoming feel to this school.
