Great for these types of students

City lifestyle with a home-like feel campus to come back to at night.

    Tips for prospective students

Visit the college before you make your final decision, and talk to current students here to see real opinions.

    Bang for the buck

The education is great and that's what you're really paying for. It is an expensive school though. The rooms are nice, good size for dorms. They do give out many scholarships though for various reasons.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is beautiful and the location is great. The best city in the world, New York City, is your backyard only a 30 min subway ride away. The activities on campus unfortunately aren't in surplus. Clubs are prevalent but not very extensive here. The food isn't the best!

    Am learning a lot

The education is fantastic on an individual level in that you won't fall between the cracks here. Classes are small and the student to teacher ratio is outstanding for a college. You get to know your fellow students and teacher on a personal level which is a huge benefit in earning a degree. You will learn so many things here, because the classes are endless! They have a great range of classes from Physics to Bioengineering to the History of Rock & Roll! It is truely an experienced education.

Great for these types of students

Outgoing, OPTIMISTIC, sporty, education-majors who make friends easily and REALLY want to be near the city.

    Tips for prospective students

I suggest that if you are extremely eager to get to New York city, but don't know how and don't live in a place with good access to it, you should look into this school. However, that desire has to be very, very high on your list of priorities, or it really just isn't worth it. Also, in order to be happy here, you have to be very outgoing and make friends easily, as people are very extroverted but not very eager to go out and make new friends. Most people on campus are athletic, so that will help you fit in more. Again, if location isn't one of the very top priorities in you college decision-making processes, don't come here. I know quite a few people who have transfered or want to, so you should be willing to make the sacrifice of dealing with a lot of unnecessary situations in order to get to the city, if you make Manhattan your choice. The teachers in the education program are great, so if teaching is what you want to do and you want the opportunity and culture of the city, don't rule this school out. Also, there are hardly any out-of-state students, so if you come from out of state, you will be a small minority.

    Bang for the buck

3 1/2 The price is high, in my opinion, and though you are in an excellent area (in a great neighborhood, so conveniently close to the city), the price isn't quite worth it. I feel I'm getting a very good education and I love being able to visit the city. I also have a nice room and my building is well-maintained. However, I am forced to pay for a mandatory dining plan, which I barely ever use. They also have a spring consolidation process in which students who are currently without a roommate have to find someone else without a roommate to consolidate with (ie. one of you has to move in with the other). The only other two options are to be forced to move out of your room into someone else's who doesn't have a roommate or pay over $1500 to remain as a single. I really can't understand the point of this other than to make more money.

    Am enjoying being here

Unfortunately, due to extreme weaknesses in administrative and policy-related aspects of the college, my experience here has been much less than enjoyable. It is extremely hard to find correct information about policies, and no one seems to know exactly what the real rules are. The policies that you do find out about are sometimes ridiculous. I've had terrible problems, especially, with guest policy and residence life. There seem to be unwritten rules about guest policy, that even the handbook, residence life, and student life meeting don't tell you. Also, the resident director I had to deal with during one guest problem was extremely unprofessional and unhelpful. The security is terrible and they only check IDs, seemingly, on a whim. Each security guard seems to have a different idea of how to handle guest passes and whether or not you have to show them your ID before entering the building. I have had a very high number of unnecessary and stressful situations to endure, already, this year. They have a lot of work to do in terms of determining regulations and establishing better school-wide communication.

    Am learning a lot

My professors have been really excellent, especially my the those in my education program. They are extremely experienced and caring people with so much to offer. One of my professors, for example, has had decades of experience as a teacher, principal, and as head of education for the Catholic school he worked at. Every single one of my education professors this semester have had years and years of experience both as educators and as leaders in their school system. I feel extremely confident that my teacher know what they are talking about. They are also very accessible and care about each individual student. I am learning so much about education from people I trust.`

    Clubs and Activities

there are a ton of clubs and activities to participate in. the student activities center likes to keep the students busy and have plenty of trips, shows, museums, or just an adventure to china town available and set up for any student that wants to go. the clubs and activities are displayed at the beginning of each semester, and you can join any of them at that time.

    Bang for the buck

manhattan college has excellent alumni connections. they offer mentor programs and the career fairs allow many students to make connections to companies. even though the equipment and the food may not be up to your high standards, you'll learn a ton, and be able to make connections, lifelong friends, and have a great experience.

    What to do for fun

there are always activities going on on campus, as well as in the city. a weekly schedule of events/activities is available all over campus, and every saturday there is a trip to the city. intramural teams are a blast to play on, and there is always a game to go see. the bronx zoo is fairly close-by bus- and free admission on wednesdays. otherwise, it may be fun to study and do homework?

    Food and Dining

the food has dramatically increased from previous years, however there is still room for improvement. the 4 dining halls offer a good selection, but are only open weekdays. there is only one choice for weekend dining, so selection is greatly reduced. however, the managers are striving to make dining experiences better, and if you request something, they try to make it happen as soon as possible, and respond to your questions.

    Dorm Life

some dorms are roomier than others- chrysostom has small rooms but for an incoming freshman, it was the best housing, in my opinion. i keep in touch with all of my floor-mates and the doors are always open. everyone is a freshman within the building (with ra's as the exception), so we were all in the same situation and we could just walk down the hall to find someone to hang out. jasper has similar dorming styles-one fairly large room and communal bathrooms, but most people keep their doors shut. horan and east hill have suite style-two rooms and a bathroom joined.

    Academic Rigor

depending on your major, some things are harder for some-and easy for others. if you actually study and do homework on time, professors are usually very willing to help and you will do fine in the courses. tutoring is available, so use it to your advantage and learn the material instead of memorizing just for a test. most courses require you to remember the previous info from other classes.

    Tips for prospective students

campus jobs are filled quickly, so plan accordingly. buy books online, because the bookstore is very expensive (as is true with all other campuses), used books work fine-just get the correct edition. bring a lamp for your dorm room-it gets dark.

    In three sentences

manhattan college is well known for their engineering department, however the science department is in need of a makeover; some professors are hard to follow/understand, and there are few that are good. within the engineering department, the equipment may be a bit outdated, but it seems to be going through an update. it is great to be near enough to the city, to be able to do countless activities, and even on campus the student activities center tries to have things to do constantly around campus.

    What to do for fun

Intramural sports. Volunteer in the community. All types of clubs.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are looking to become an engineer, the college is one of the best in the nation. Very friendly environment. It is a catholic college, but they don't force their beliefs on anyone who doesn't want them too.

    In three sentences

Manhattan College is a fairly small sized institution, with a welcoming environment. The largest class size is no more than thirty students, therefore you really develop a personal relationship with your professor and they help you to do your best. Manhattan College offers many opportunities to get involved at the institute and in the community.

    Campus Safety

they work hard so students are safe

    Greek Life

there is none really, other than some relating to academics.

    Clubs and Activities

    there are many club options

Great for these types of students

student-athletes with academic drive, who are up for making their own adventures.

    Bang for the buck

it's rather expensive since it is a private school, but the academics, area, and dorms don't really measure up.

    What to do for fun

go to bars/parties, join a sports team (regular or intramural), take the subway to manhattan.

    Food and Dining

the school just switched to gormet dining services. the food is ok and always has some healthy options.

    Dorm Life

the rooms themselves are pretty big compared to other schools, but not very pretty or nice to look at. security is fairly strict, which is good because of the area the school is located, but can be annoying when you want a guest to visit.

    Academic Rigor

i think it depends what your major is. engineers always have a high work load and need to study hard, but i assume other majors can coast through.

    Tips for prospective students

make sure you want to be in a small college in an urban setting.

    In three sentences

manhattan college is good, but you won't get the typical college experience here necessarily. there is no greek life and few parties, so most of the social life consists in bars--or if you don't drink, in clubs or on sports teams. it is very small, which is great because of the small class sizes, but you won't meet someone new everyday (which can be thrilling and fun at other large schools).

    Food and Dining

Let's be honest... the food sucks. But sometimes its good, its just an on and off thing. But its college, we aren't there for the food.

    Dorm Life

There are only 4 dorms, but the friendly competition between the dorm buildings is fun, especially the dorm wars in the spring.

    Academic Rigor

It depends on how hard you are willing to work. If you are a hard worker you will do great. If studying is not for you then I would suggest a different school.

    Tips for prospective students

Come with the knowledge many students are local, and that there aren't many on campus dining options. But the school is a great place to be :)

    Bang for the buck

I think the school is definitely worth you money since it is in a great location and the school is very credible.

    What to do for fun

Going to the city (timesquare) is my personal best, however many people simply play on the campus quad. Youcan play frisbee or some football. Many people skateboard around campus, there are often plays of some sort that you can go see, the student activities office always has a flyer of things to do for the week and they send out emails, so that you know what the activities are.

    Food and Dining

The food can sometimes not be so good, however, this year the meal plans are going to change, and they will make better food available.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are fun, you'll easily make friends with your suite mates!

    Academic Rigor

The teachers are very reasonable in their grading, but if you fail to give yourself sometime to study, then school will be very hard.

Make sure you visit the school before deciding to go there and see if its a right fit for you, ask the admissions counselor a lot of questions regarding the classes you'll be taking, the workload, etc. so you won't be surprised when you take your first classes.

    In three sentences

Manhattan is a very small school which means you get individual attention in all your classes since they're less than 30 students each. They expect highly of you so you can't really mess up because they expect you to be on top of your work as well. Overall, its been a bittersweet journey so far but I really like it here.

    Campus Safety

The security is great. They keep creepy people off campus. There are alerts that come straight to our phones. Whenever someone looks like they are in trouble campus security is on it. The keys to get into each hall for dorms are secure as well since the cards are difficult to get.

    Greek Life

There are a couple sororities and one fraternity. The sorority that my friends wanted me to join was the Alpha Sigma Phi. They participate in a lot of events and make people feel like there is a warmer atmosphere on campus. They bring colleges together since each college has greek groups that want to meet other greek groups at events.

    Clubs and Activities

Cultural ones, sport clubs such as tennis, basketball. There were a couple of intramural sports. There were stand up comedian type of clubs. Every club you could possibly think of and their members had to have a certain number of people so you could rest assured that they were full of life.

Great for these types of students

For Hipsters who like to veture out to the city. Kids who like to be near their library and close to their friends. Maybe even close to their families if they live in NY. There is Bronx to be aware of so, if they like the Bronx they will like college there.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is a quad , where people would sprawl out and take in sun. There was mass at 7:30 every Sunday.

    Bang for the buck

Yeah. my parents are ok with it. I am getting a lot of loans though. It is less if you don't dorm there.

    What to do for fun

I hung out with people who liked music. We tried to make music. I attend improv shows.

    Food and Dining

The food wasn''t bad. There was enough variety.

    Dorm Life

The rooms where I lived were small. I lived in Chrysostom hall. Over all they are well maintained. There are group bathrooms in Chrysostom hall. There are lounges on every floor. I met only freshman in this hall becuase Chrysostom is only meant for freshman.

    Academic Rigor

The math classes are intense, I took pre-calculus and calculus.

    Tips for prospective students

Good luck with the finals, they are actually difficult. Make sure to look at the required gpa for inteded major.

    In three sentences

It is the best college. It is a well-valued college. There are good math programs there that are diffifult.

Dining here is decent. The food is good, but some dining halls are more organized (and more expensive) than others.

    Dorm Life

Most dorms are very nice and set up in such a way that socializing and meeting new people is easy. Make your room your own and make friends effortlessly!

    Campus Safety

Very safe campus. There are blue lights are around campus and security walking around all the time.

    Greek Life

We have a few Fraternities and Sororities on campus. There's no Greek row, or large Greek life, but there are some.

    Clubs and Activities

    There are lots of clubs!

Great for these types of students

Study bugs Partiers Athletic types Social butterflies Lone wolves

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

LOTS OF BARS, SPRINGFEST, QUADSTOCK, ETC

    Bang for the buck

Yes, it's a pricey school. But it's worth the money you spend. Plus we give out pretty good financial aid.

    What to do for fun

It's New York City, there is so much to do for fun! You can never really be bored! Around campus there are LOTS of bars, restaurants, some clubs, golf course, tennis courts. Steps from campus there is the 1 train that takes you right into Manhattan or wherever! Our school offers deals on Broadway shows, concerts,Yankee/Mets games, Rangers, Knicks/Nets, we also offer weekend trips into the city with planned itineraries (you can always stray away though).

    Food and Dining

Average college food. 4 dining halls. Hot meals, salad bar, pizza, sushi, gluten free, allergen free, coffee/tea station, tex-mex, soft serve machine, etc. All the food your stomach desires! There is a Starbucks on campus as well as a sit down restaurant that serves higher class dining hall food. Also a small school grocery store with cereal, granola bars, candy, Gatorade, milk, juice, ice cream, etc.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are clean and nice. Chrystostom- the freshman dorm (if you want the freshman experience), very close knit groups, communal bathrooms, VERY small rooms. same sex floors. Jasper- anyone can live there. close knit groups as well. communal bathrooms. communal bathrooms are cleaned every day except for the weekends. same sex floors. large rooms. Horan/East Hill- anyone can live here. suite style living. 2 bedrooms to 1 bathroom. either can have 4 people or sometimes 5. floors are co-ed. Overlook- the senior/junior apartment style living with kitchen, living room, bathroom, bedroom. There is laundry in each building, FREE! Also, common rooms with couches, chairs, tables, tv, microwave, etc.

    Academic Rigor

It really depends on your major. Different majors have it harder than other majors. Of course engineering majors probably have it the toughest. But to each their own.

    Tips for prospective students

As long as you have an average GPA and average SAT scores you should be fine. If you love to go out or hate to go out there are LOTS of things for both sides to do. We also have a good athletic program, but no football, so if you're looking for that Division 1 football feel you're out of luck. But basketball games are fun! It's a great small campus with anything your heart desires.

    In three sentences

Manhattan College is a great school if you want to be near the city but not in the hustle and bustle of Manhattan. The school has a lot to offer club wise and stuff to do. But there's also a GREAT social aspect and places to go out to.

    Campus Safety

While Manhattan College is located adjacent to a rough, sometimes dangerous neighborhood, it has a noticeably strong safety system; there are several safety stations across the campus. It is recommended by public safety to always travel in numbers and to be aware of your surroundings. If you go here, however, you shouldn't let the thought of an intimidating neighborhood stop you from exploring the city and surrounding areas.

    Clubs and Activities

As mentioned before, there is a very large, practically unavoidable amount of clubs and activities on campus. To name a few--intramural sports, campus newspaper (The Quadrangle, which always seems to be looking for new writers with fresh ideas), Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu, Eucharistic Ministers, Jazz Band, Pep Band, SoNYC, Math department lectures, ASCE, IEEE, Film club, ASME, Just For Peace, Engineers Without Borders, Gaming club, and many others. If there is something missing on campus that you would like to see, you can get a group of students together and ask student activities about starting it; there is usually enough funding to start it.

Great for these types of students

If you can work hard and party hard and balance the two well, this is the place for you. It also helps if you have good people/leadership skills and a sense of adventure.

    Bang for the buck

Manhattan College is considerably expensive. However, if you plan on working hard and take advantage of the very pronounced career assistance the college offers you, the rewards are pleasing. The key to having a strong ROI is simply putting in the effort.

    What to do for fun

The top three things one does for fun Manhattan College include clubs and activities, going out at night with friends, and going into the city to either explore (be adventurous) or attend an event somewhere. The college is loaded with activities and even has a fair early each fall semester boasting nearly all of them.

    Food and Dining

While the food on campus has a high diversity factor, it generally isn't that great. The main dining hall isn't very large and it sometimes has trouble handling the influx of students coming in for lunch or dinner. On some, rare days, the food is absolutely spectacular, but on other days the general consensus is less than appealing. The overall dining experience is relatively clean, though. It is better to sometimes order out for dinner on many nights. It is somewhat common for an entire floor in the dorms to order out collectively on some nights. The meal plan for Manhattan College is considerably inflexible and expensive, despite offering an unlimited meals option; it doesn't have a good bang-for-buck ratio. The on campus dining is, however, good for a small, quick snack a few times per day.

    Dorm Life

The two types of residences at Manhattan include classical dorming style and suite style. The dorming style is generally two people to a room and is a very social style of living; expect to keep your door open during most of the daytime. The dorming style is usually more wild in terms of partying on the weekends. Suite style is generally less wild in terms of partying and is a little more on the quiet side; expect generally four people to a suite. It is often easier for students to live on campus at Manhattan if they have a strong or spread out workload. Dorm life is, nevertheless, fun all around.

    Academic Rigor

There will always be a lot of work that is challenging for STEM-major students; mathematics and sciences are stressed in all majors and regardless of what degree you leave the college with, you need to take at least one math and one science class. Though the work for all majors is challenging, there is an abundant level of extra help available (i.e. the writing center, the learning center(s)). In terms of relevance of the work, each student can expect to take one or two irrelevant classes or classes that have nothing to do with his or her major but expose you to other facets of learning (i.e. an engineer taking sociology in freshman year). Always be ready to learn something; the more seriously you take the work the better you will do (if professors see that you're trying they'll boost you a bit academically).

    Tips for prospective students

While the work is a lot at times, the downtime is copious and pleasing. Many clubs and organizations present on the campus allow room for student participation on campus; it is wise to take advantage of these opportunities to make friends and learn new skills. If a student wants an organization or club formed, there is also a large margin of space to do that. As someone with experience doing both, dorming is a far better experience then commuting; if you can, stay on campus as a resident. Take advantage of the area you are in; it has a few really nice parks worth visiting. In addition, New York City is very easy to reach by train. While drug culture is noticeably large on campus, there is no pressure to do any if you are uncomfortable with the idea. It should be pointed out that the college's culture is very bar-friendly. If you are dorming, do not get caught up too much in partying (especially STEM-major students), since the workload is powerful and the weeding-out process at Manhattan is a bit overdone. Just remember that you can and should always go for extra help whenever you need it. The college itself is small but you will get a lot of exercise just from walking around. The food from the cafeteria is good for about the first two weeks of classes; after that it is better option to get dinner at one of the food places around the college (there are may delis, diners, and pizza places around the college in the Riverdale area). A key tip at Manhattan College is to always be willing to try something new (be it a club or a class--Manhattan College seems to add a new bunch of classes each year) and don't be afraid to go for the gold.

    In three sentences

Overall, a good school for balancing play time and work time. Expect a moderately challenging curriculum but a lot of available help and support. It is small in size, close socially speaking, and its location is considerably optimal, at the border of New York City and a neighboring quiet suburb.

    Academic Rigor

Professors will always be there to help, but students still need to work hard on their own to learn and retain the information.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not get behind on your school work. The professors will let you know on the first day when tests and papers are going to be so be prepared because the semesters fly by.

    What to do for fun

Due to MC'S proximity to Manhattan, a trip to downtown Manhattan is only a 50 minute subway ride on the one train. However, most kids choose to stay around campus for their weekend experience. Students on a typical weekend are usually found at bars surrounding the general are of campus. However, come basketball season, JasperNation unifies for the basketball games. Having made the NCAA tournament last year, followed by a nail- biting loss to Louisville, the Jaspers hope to make another impressive run to the tournament. Although Draddy gymnasium is rather small, it brings MC students together to show pride in their school.

    Food and Dining

Lockes loft has a few good days. A few. However, a typical day at Lockes loft comes with disappointment. Food is often overcooked, and sometimes even undercooked. During weekends, I'd say 75% of the kitchen staff is off, so a few easy- to- cook trays of food are made, and the students are generally unhappy with the cafeteria all weekend. However, some days their are pleasant surprises. A team of sushi chefs may come in to prepare intricate pieces of sushi, or the Tex- Mex station may turn into a Hibachi grill. Food on campus at MC is often unpredictable.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life at MC is fun, just like any other college. For the most part, staff are pretty laid back. The rooms themselves are nothing special. MC's newer dorms ( Horan and Lee Hall) feature suite- style living, whereas the older dorms (Jasper and Chrystosom) feature traditional- style living. The two suite- style dorms often have an issue with noise, due to their positioning right next to Broadway (242 street). Some rooms in the newer buildings have stunning views into Manhattan, while with others, all you see is the side of another building.

    Academic Rigor

MC is all about being personal between professors and students. Most professors are willing to dedicate their spare time to helping you succeed. Overall, yes, Manhattan College is relatively academically rigorous, however, if you study, and are interactive with professors when talking about test grades and mistakes you may have made, you are bound to do well.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not think that when you visit the school as a prospective student that the food is always that good, because it isn't. The kitchen staff outs on a big show every time a sizable group of prospective students is touring the campus. Also, expect to be nickeled and dimed. Whether it be a soda that costs three dollars at a vending machine, or having to pay extra for class trips, expect this to happen. If you do not mind noise, then this is the place for you. The close proximity to Broadway (242 street) comes with much noise, as many students can clearly hear the subway, or patrol car sirens from their room. I find myself waking up before my alarm some mornings.

    In three sentences

Overall, Manhattan College is, I'd say, an academically challenging school. Night life can sometimes end up being a bit dull, and the food isn't always the greatest. However, if you are looking to become an engineer, this is the school for you!
