    Great for these types of students

    Students who want to be challenged and graduate from a prestigious university. Prospective engineering majors for sure, but Tech also has a solid humanities program as well as flourishing business school that have garnered a lot of acclaim in recent years. Whatever you want to go into, Michigan Tech can help you get there.
    Tips for prospective students

    If you don't go to class or do you're work you'll fail anywhere and Tech is no exception. There's so much help available it's really hard to not find anyone to get advice from. The university puts a lot of effort into making freshmen feel welcome and introducing them to college life.

    Michigan Tech is a great school at a great price. Cheaper than most of the other state schools in Michigan with a reputation that is respected everywhere. If you're going into any engineering field, give Tech a serious consideration. You can't find a better school for it in state.
    Am enjoying being here

    Tech is located smack dab in the middle of Houghton, residing in the Keweenaw of upper Michigan. Briefly, we get a lot of snow. To say we take advantage of this is an understatement. Tech hosts the Winter Carnival ever February, sporting snow sculptures, live music, free food, and a lot of fun. We have a ski mountain five minutes from campus that's great for both skiers and snowboarders of every skill level. If you were into music in high school and still want to continue I saved the best part for last . Michigan Tech is the proud home of none other than the Michigan Tech Huskies Pep Band. A completely student run organization that plays at every school sporting event and a whole lot more.(Sorry if this seems a bit biased, I'm in the band after all) Donning our signature black and yellow striped overalls and more than a couple silly hats we've been a staple of Tech sports and have even been the host band for the WCHA Final Five for the past three years. No other band has ever been invited more than once. But no matter what you're into, there's a group for it and you'll quickly find people to hang out and have fun with.
    Am learning a lot

    Michigan Tech has a reputation of being a tough school and it's reputation is well earned. Every class I've taken has been a challenge but nothing too extreme. The university takes academic dishonestly very seriously and strives to ensure that every grade is well earned and up to snuff with what's demanded in the real world. Despite all of this, it was an easy transition from high school. Michigan Tech has dedicated learning centers for each field of study, staffed with students who know the material backwards and forwards. There's always someone to help you with something. The biggest mistake I've seen people make is to simply not go to class and not do homework. It's a challenging school for sure, but nothing you can't handle if you just keep at it.

    Tips for prospective students

    Even though it doesn't seem like there's much up here, the Keweenaw area does offer an environment for many types of outdoor recreation. The opportunities to enjoy oneself have very few limits. As long as you learn how to balance fun and school, you should have little problems.

    Residing in the dorms is an awesome way to meet new people. For me, college was an excellent chance to break out of my shell and join several organizations, such as the MTU TV Production Club, which created its own sitcom, Colledge (that is how we spell it), as well as going Greek by joining a fraternity.
    Am learning a lot

    Michigan Tech is definitely a challenging school. There is a slightly sharp learning curve, especially in the first year. Once you figure out the best studying habits, however, it does become easier.

    Students that want to be challenged in their academics that truly love what they are going to school for. Tech is only for people that want to work hard, if you are willing to put the effort in there is so much to learn from the professors and students from Tech but if you don't want to put the effort in Tech most likely isn't for you. If you love the outdoors than Tech is a great school for you, there is so much to do and so much great nature around the school. There are so many great and different people that teach at and attend Tech, so if you want a chance to get to know new and different people than Tech is a great school to attend and there is a good chance that when you graduate from Tech you'll leave with a lot of great friends.
    Tips for prospective students

    Tech has a lot of opportunities to learn but it takes a lot of work. Don’t skip classes, because once you start it is too easy to keep skipping classes, if your paying for it and want to learn you should attend all of your classes. Also it is really good to get into a study habit, don’t just do homework when you have it or just study when you feel like it. Have a schedule of when to study and what to work on, if you stick to it it makes it much easier to stay focused and makes school a lot more enjoyable. It is also really important to have fun, studying is important but Tech is a hard school if you don’t have fun every once in a while school becomes unenjoyable it makes it harder to do good.

    The cost for college is high no matter where you go, but compared to a lot of other good schools Tech offers a great price for such a great education. I have been so happy with my education and experience for the price I pay especially hearing how unhappy some of my friends are at their much more expensive schools. But it is a lot of money and if you decide that Tech is right for you, you should make sure you take advantage of the opportunities that you pay for. If you are going to pay so much to attend Tech you should attend classes and try hard, its only worth as much as you want to put into it, if your not going to work hard than you shouldn't pay so much for school. But if you want to get a great education and work hard for it than the money is totally worth it to go to Tech.

    Michigan Technological University can be a very fun and adventurous school but it is not for everyone. For some people it is the perfect school and for others it is not the school for them. It is up to you to have fun, meet people, and find things to do. It is far away from big cities which some people don't like but there is tons to do outside and the school does a great job creating things for students to do. There are a lot of great people at the school but there are also a lot of different types of people, if you are open to meet new people that aren't quite like you, than you can make a lot of great friendships. I have had a great time at Tech but it is up to the individual to make it fun.

    Michigan Technological University is a great school for learning. No matter your class, teacher or learning style you can always find someone that will help you learn what you need to learn. Almost all professors will help you outside of class to learn the material if you need help, and even if you are with a professor that does not go out of their way to help you, you can find other professors willing to help. There are also tons of learning centers where fellow students can tutor you for free. The learning centers are a huge help in studies and also a great way to meet people. Before I got to tech I never felt as challenged as I wanted to be, when I got to Tech I was able to take classes at a rate that I wanted to and love the classes. Classes are challenging but also fun and offer great opportunities to learn. To learn at Tech you have apply yourself, it is a lot of work and does not come extremely easy but with work it is very easy to learn all that you need to.

    Great for these types of students

    This is a science and engineering-oriented university. It's biggest programs are in the engineering department, so if you enjoy the engineering challenge, then this is the right school for you!! It also has some good program majors in the sciences department such as material sciences and mechanical engineering technology. It is THE #1 school for forestry, so any interest in the woods would do you well.
    Tips for prospective students

    Take science and math oriented classes and apply for scholarships to help pay. Also, research each of the majors you may be interested in-mechanical, environmental, chemical, electrical, civil engineering or computer science, physics, mathematics, geology so that you don't waste time and MONEY on courses. I have a good head in each of these due to my lengthy career here so feel free to ask me and especially one of the representatives on the admissions page.

    Well I quite covered that in the previous: OUT OF STATE (NOT MI)=$30,000 typical IN-STATE (MI)=$17,000 typical and maybe a bit more (dorms) It is the second most expensive school in Michigan second only to UofMich. The education is pretty good and Michigan Tech has a very good reputation. A college degree from Michigan Tech is very good in the eyes of many employers. In previous years (when the economy was better), most students would get internships from companies that came to the Michigan Tech career fair.
    Am enjoying being here

    I do like it here quite a bit. I've lived in the dorms my first two years and moved to on campus apartments my third/current year. In the dorms, you will make a lot of friends that would have otherwise seemed impossible to have done, especially if you live in a learning-community hall (there are a select few halls in the dormitories that give you a closer-knit bond with your hallmates through several planned activities). One of these activities is the winter carnival snow statues that are resurrected each year into beautiful masterpieces. It makes the campus scene very enjoyable in february after all the snow. Another aspect of being here that I like is the opportunity to play as many intramural sports, attend Division I games for free, enjoy the snowboarding/ski hill, portage lake golf course, and free admission to the indoor Gates Tennis Center all for $64 per semester. If you are an active student, this is definitely a bargain. Another cool thing is broomball-a sport played like hockey without skates, with modified brooms and a 6 sized ball. It is the best equivalent for many students to being in a varsity sport since broomball has such a high tradition and support level throughout the community. Some of the downsides of living here can be the tremendous amounts of lake effect snow we receive. The BIGGEST downside however is the distance away from home you will have to be. Since this college is located in the far western upper peninsula of Michigan, you will likely be quite isolated from family. You may come from MN or WI which makes you a bit closer, but you will pay out of state tuition=$30000. If you are in-state, which basically means you are from the Metro-Detroit area, Saginaw, Grand Rapids, you have a long drive my friend. If from any other state, you are probably looking at either a LONG drive or an expensive plane trip home. Another good thing about the university, something that just came to mind, is that there are GREAT! opportunities to take a leadership role. I've taken one in my enterprise (Green Campus Enterprise), tennis club, and another organization.
    Am learning a lot

    Many of my first year classes covered the basics in engineering, chemistry, physics, and other sciences. I picked up quite a bit though most students retain about a third of what they learn. Some of your classes will definitely build on themselves (ie when you take statics, you will need to redraw from your physics). However, the courses are easily paced since material is normally reviewed or otherwise sample problems will be demonstrated in class, some of which are mostly similar to homework problems. The engineering courses are definitely not for the faint of heart, I took a 3rd/4th year class (Chemical Processes for Environmental Engineers) that ran deep into water chemistry. Some of the less brilliant students had trouble following as the class pace was quite quick. I do remember some of my other first and second year classes have a quick course pace. This is definitely a step up from my high school. My school progressed slowly through material to keep the much less intelligent students on board. If you're taking several AP courses and/or you are doing quite well in school, GPA 3.0+ (3.5+ recommended), you will enjoy the pace of some of the basic courses and will do fine C+/B- and probably higher in even the toughest of classes. If you are, perhaps, not a brainiac, you can still do well in the classes with help from the learning centers. Sometimes, even the smartest of students can benefit from these centers as they can work with other students in simply doing work, as what happens in my department at the Student Success Center

    Great for these types of students

    Michigan Tech is known for Engineering. But it's also great for all other types of majors and departments, other than engineering there are forestry, computer science, business, science... And tons of other degrees and programs. Also, if you're not too sure about the big campus types of schools in very urban settings this is also the school for you. It's small enough where you can walk to your classes in 5 minutes, but also big enough where you're always meeting new people.
    Tips for prospective students

    Try and do a roommate match before you start school. Once you say that you are for sure attending Michigan Tech they send you information about finding roommates. You can always go in blind but I advise you use the program they offer you. It's kind of like a personality questionnaire that you fill out with your different habits and likes and dislikes. It can help you find the perfect roommate. And a perfect roommate not only won't get on your nerves or be completely opposite of you, they'll become one of your best friends.

    A lot of people tell me that I can be getting the same education at a school that's much cheaper than this one, but I don't think so. Sure, some of the classes you can go anywhere for. But by attending Michigan Tech I feel like I am just getting more out of it then if I were going anywhere else. I am learning so much and I'm enjoying being here.

    I love the atmosphere of this school, and town. It's smaller, but I love the fact that I can walk to my classes and it doesn't entail walking two miles to different classes, they're all together on one campus. The small setting of the town is the same way, you may not think there's anything to do, but if you take the time to get out and enjoy what this area has to offer you will be amazed.
    Am learning a lot

    One of the main reasons I decided to attend Michigan Tech is so I could get a great education, and that's exactly what I'm getting. The classes are filled with information and all of your professors KNOW what they're talking about. Some of what you're learning can be a bit fast paced, but each professor has office hours where they'll be more than happy to meet with you and explain one on one. A lot of my classes and labs are hands on, which is a great way of learning things easier and faster because you actually get to do it. The bottom line is, if you decide to attend Michigan Tech, you will be getting a great education.

    Campus Safety

    The campus police do an excellent job on campus. Houghton is a small town with little to no crime, but the campus police are there to make sure no student ever feels unsafe on campus.
    Greek Life

    Greek life is very active on campus, hosting events for students on campus, parties off campus, and charity events. There are more fraternities than sororities due to the ratio of students at MTU (3:1 male to female), but everyone interested can pledge. Greek Life at MTU is very friendly and open.
    Clubs and Activities

    A large list of active clubs can be found on the MTU website, and types range from intramural sports to nerd-themed to community service. There is quite literally a club for everyone, and if you find it lacking it's easy to start up your own!
    Great for these types of students

    MTU is great for technical minded students. You can debate the pros and cons of different operating systems, new software, video games, and the latest phones.
    Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

    Winter Carnival is an exciting time of the year where classes are stopped for a couple days and students compete in building enormous snow statues. There is a coronation court, partying, music and dancing on campus, and a crowded and exciting hockey and basketball game for the weekend. There is also Zombie Tag on campus and sidewalk chalk everywhere.

    Although expensive, Michigan Tech gives a high quality education in STEM subjects. If you're interested in liberal arts it's probably not worth the money, unless you're interested in applying your liberal arts degree in a technical minded company.
    What to do for fun

    At Michigan Tech there's free snowboarding and skiing. There's an extensive trail system for bikers, runners, and those just wanting to take a nice walk. Our pep band is loud and entertaining at our sporting events and students are admitted to many sporting events for free. There's also programming competition, Magic! card games, an anime club and clubs for intellectual interests such as Women in Computer Science, Linux Users Group, Mobile Developer's Club, and many others. You can learn to dance at Swing Club, sing and worship at a large number of Christian Organizations, or debate religious ideas at open-minded debates held thoughout the year.
    Food and Dining

    There's been some cuts in the food budget, and the Dining Hall has decided to decrease dining hall hours instead of cutting back on food quality. This means that some dining halls close earlier than others, and you'll have to take a short walk to get food at times, but to keep the food quality decent it's worth it, as the dorms are all located quite near each other.
    Dorm Life

    There is a wide variety of dorm life at Michigan Tech. Wadsworth hall is the most social hall, with a lot of Greek Life members coming out of it. East McNair houses a larger percentage of school-minded students and students with alternative interests (Ex: Computer Science Learning Community). DHH is a smaller dorm with a more close knit community for those seeking lifelong friendships.
    Academic Rigor

    Academic rigor really depends on what major you're going in to. If you want to be an engineer, be prepared for long hours spent on homework and group projects. Non-engineering STEM majors can also be quite rigorous. If you want a good education but you can't handle the workload, look at Technology majors instead of the standard Engineering majors. Remember that learning centers are located all over campus and your instructor is always there to help.
    Tips for prospective students

    If you're an outdoors type, bring your mountain bike for the extensive trail system. Take advantage of free skiing and snowboarding at Mt. Ripley. Don't buy textbooks until you know you'll need them. Sometimes everything the teacher wants you to have is available online and you don't need to purchase books at all. Don't be afraid to try something new. Whether you're interested in the Permanently Floating Riot Club or running for Winter Carnival Queen.
    In three sentences

    MTU is a snow covered refuge for all varieties of technology-addicts, with its own meme page and refreshing humor. The workload can be tough but the professors are relatable and the outdoor activities range from broomball, disc golf, and frisbockey, to Comic-Con, programming tournaments, and the boisterous MTU Pep Band. With fun traditions such as the Winter Carnival Snow Statues building and more career-oriented Enterprise organizations, MTU has something for everyone.

    Great for these types of students

    If you are a generally geeky person, this is the place for you! If you love sci-fi, fantasy, gaming, logical thinking, or really any pursuit that is not sports-based, you will have lots of friends here. In addition, however, if you are an outdoorsman, the possibilities are endless. Public Safety scares a lot of people off with their rules about what can and cannot be stored, but don't believe them. If you go and talk to public safety, they'll store anything you ask, just be nice :)
    Tips for prospective students

    Visit this place! There is no way to understand how a college feels without visiting, and MTU is no exception. Also, there are very few majors outside of engineering. If you are not 100% set on your major, I'd consider other schools simply because if you transfer out of one major at MTU, there are very few options left open to you.
    Bang for the buck

    The number one thing you're paying for here is the school name that goes on your diploma. As far as first and second year classes go, you need to take them at Michigan Tech. Start somewhere cheaper and transfer in. Your wallet and GPA will thank you!

    The location is fantastic! Everything is gorgeous and there really is a lot more to do than you would think. Also, everyone at Michigan Tech is extremely nice. It's a campus where you can walk around at 11pm alone and feel perfectly safe. Everyone is down to earth and willing to help each other out. One downfall is that it is in the middle of nowhere. So if there's something you're really into, make sure they have it on campus, because if it isn't there you won't find it.
    Am learning a lot

    After my first semester I do not feel like I learned a lot at all. Although I had 17 credit hours, most of those credits were just review. And then in the classes that weren't review, I feel that I have actually learned very little. For instance, spending a semester in engineering class learning how to write a proper memo doesn't count for me.

    Tips for prospective students

    Dress warm and bring equipment for broomball. Also be prepared to work hard at your classes; it's not high school any more. Get involved with your residence hall, an organization, or a sport. Branch out: the international students are great!

    Even though tuition has been going up, the college is still worth it. Like mentioned before, the professors know the material and most are willing to take the time to make sure that you do as well. The campus life is great and people have had fun times without alcohol. It is also rated one of the most safest campuses in the United States.
    Am enjoying being here

    Though the academics is tough, the Michigan Tech is a place that you want to root for. From the free sports games and skiing (downhill and Nordic) to the famous Winter Carnival, there is plenty to do around the small town of Houghton. For people who enjoy the outdoors, there are multiple cliffs, waterfalls, trails and more to explore.
    Am learning a lot

    The staff here, especially among the physics department, has been amazing. They clearly know the material and most of the professors I have had are willing to answer questions and engage you on things that you are unsure of. There are also many learning centers and study groups available. Of course, like every school, there will be professors that are difficult to understand or to get aid from, but the good ones are more numerous.

    Be prepared to work hard and play harder. The weak do not survive in the Great White North. Yes, Tech is a hard school but it is worth every moment of it.

    It is the 2nd most expensive public school in Michigan. Be prepared for tons of fees. However, the education is worth it. Industry knows the quality of Michigan Tech engineers.

    I could not imagine attending another school. Between attending sporting events, playing Broomball, participating in Winter Carnival, studying with friends, and just being myself, I love it here. There is something for everyone. You just have to be willing to try.
    Am learning a lot

    Over the past 3 years, I have learned more than I ever imagined. I have grown as a person and as an engineer. I am more confident in my abilities. I know now crazy math and science I never dreamed of. Soon, I will be an engineer : )

    Campus Safety

    Michigan Tech was, in 2011, rated the 2nd safest campus in the country. Enough said. The only thing that can be dangerous about Michigan Tech is the weather, if you're not a cautious driver.
    Greek Life

    I am not involved in greek life, so I can't really speak on it.
    Clubs and Activities

    There are clubs for pretty much any interest and organization you could imagine, including fraternities, sororities, religious orgs, academic interest orgs, special interest orgs, technical orgs (sound and lighting, recording tech., etc.), and others.

    Winter Carnival is the big tradition at Michigan Tech. During late January or early February every year thousands of people trek up to Houghton for a festival that celebrates snow, ice, and hockey. Students build enormous statues of snow and ice (either one-night or month-long projects), the hockey team hosts a weekend series, and the campus is filled with music, free stuff, and hundreds of people for a week. Class gets out on Wed. of that week, and so there are five days off for students. Another great tradition is broomball. Originating in Scandinavia, it is essentially hockey with brooms, just without skates and in a smaller rink. Also, instead of a puck there is a hard rubber ball. Broomball is a hardy sport that is physically intense and a ton of fun. Sliding all over the place and trying to smack a ball into a goal with a duck-taped broom is great fun.
    Bang for the buck

    Michigan Tech is very expensive for a state university (estimated 27k per year in-state in 2012/2013), and I do not feel that it is quite worth that much. While employers value a Michigan Tech education and will hire many high achieving students that graduate, leaving school with a ton of debt is not something that is easily remedied, even with a nice job. Tech is a great school, and you will be great at whatever you study when you graduate, but the cost may be prohibitive for some.
    What to do for fun

    The Keweenaw Peninsula is an amazing place to play in and explore. Numerous mines and mining ruins, old growth forests, beaches, snow sports (including a campus ski hill across the lake), and other fun activities make Houghton a fun place to live. Lastly, access to the campus rec center and the ski hill across the lake is free to students (ski/board rental costs money)!
    Food and Dining

    At Tech you get unlimited meals if you live in the residence halls, but there's a price: the food isn't four-star. Most of the time the meals are good, they just tend to cycle quickly, meaning that you will probably have the same meals every three weeks or so. Occasional special dinners are incredible, and often feature steak and other nice food. The other downside to campus dining is location. While each dorm has its own dining hall, The dining hall in Douglas Houghton Hall only serves breakfast and lunch on weekdays, and on the weekends only the Wadsworth Hall dining hall is open for brunch and dinner (in the winter the walk to Wads can be uncomfortable). McNair Hall's dining hall offers late night food until 9 pm, which is great.
    Dorm Life

    Dorm life for me has been great. Most of the students at Tech are like-minded, and therefore you will probably get along well with several people, and will make a lot of friends. Being at a technical schools like Michigan Tech means that campus culture is less varied than at a liberal arts school. Everybody here is a geek, and so we mostly have similar interests and get along.
    Academic Rigor

    Some classes, primarily gen. ed., are super easy at Tech, but many of the core classes in the engineering disciplines become incredibly intense. This understandably varies by instructor, but overall the subject matter covered in a majority of courses is difficult in nature. The hardest part of many classes is the lack of actual instruction that many professors do. You will have several classes in which you need to teach yourself all of the material from the book.
    Tips for prospective students

    Be able to motivate yourself to work hard and be responsible for your own success. Professors here will not take it easy on you as a freshman, and many of them won't be able to communicate very well, so you need to be able to get things done yourself.

    Lovers of snow, the outdoors, video games, small campuses, and tech. This is a great place for engineers offering a lot of opportunities to enter the job market prepared and aware. Its also a great place for someone wishing for great study abroad opportunities they are always offered and many students come back with positive experiences. It is also a great place for people looking to get that small town experience the locals are very nice as well as most other residents of the campus.

    Be ready to study and be prepared to learn. Classes are hard, you will definitely work for your grades. Talk to your teachers they will be perfectly willing to help you and will respond positively to your inquiry. Don't be afraid to try new things you'll have a lot of fun and meet a lot of really nice new people.

    Tech is very expensive but is definitely worth it if you can afford it. The quality of education is excellent and you get a lot for your money like the ability to attend sporting events and performances free as well as the special events that are hosted throughout the year, most, also free.

    It is a very fun place to be. The people are incredibly friendly and helpful, there is always something to do and ample opportunities for meeting new people and potential friends. Not to mention the beautiful scenery and fun seasonally appropriate activities.

However this improves the environment I find and the teachers are very willing to give you any help you need if you are willing to work.     Tips for prospective students

    1.) APPLY APPLY APPLY for scholarships! A large amount of scholarships are for high school graduates only - after that, you really have to dig deep and search hard for scholarships. the more money you get in scholarships, the less you have to pay for/borrow in student loans! 2.) BUDGET! the summer may be for having fun, but don't spend all your money! Think of each pay check/dollar amount in, say, one book or one meal. It all adds up! 3.) GET INVOLVED! a. Academics come first, but its also important to balance your education with extracurricular activities. MTU offers many club sports, student organizations and research opportunities for all students. Involvement allows you to network and meet other students with the same goals and focus as you. b. It is important to really get invoved in your major/department - professors want to get to you know but you need to do the leg work. Introduce yourself, attend department socials, find the student org that represents your major, get to know the upperclassmen. This way, when you move to upper level classes, you have already established connections and can approach your professors with the questions you will undoubtedly have on your homework, possible career and scholarship opportunities. 4.) BE PREPARED TO WORK HARD. This school isn't for the faint-hearted. You will work for your grade, so be prepared to grow into college mode - this isn't high school anymore. The classes are larger, the material is deeper and the pace is faster, and unless you advocate for yourself, you won't get the grade you want. 5.) EXPLORE! Outside of class, homework and extracurricular activities, explore the local area. There are multiple trails, mountains, waterfalls and outdoor activities to do - the scenery is beautiful and you won't get another opportunity to be a student at MTU again, so make the most of it!

    Yes, college is expensive - but when you look at our Career Fair and the hundreds of companies hiring MTU graduates - well, that alone proves you are spending your money wisely. Also, Michigan Tech is well known for the tough academic programs and the well rounded students that graduate each year. Our school provides world-class education and world-class opportunities for students while you are getting your degree and post-graduation.

    MTU may be way up north, but I love being here! I love winter - snow, cold and many pairs of boots! Also, there are so many things to do: hiking, kayaking, swimming, sports, camping, climbing, etc... The Outdoor Adventure Program (OAP) is a fantastic student resource, as they provide multiple trips into nature (hikes, canoeing, camping) and great rates on rental equipment. There are multiple waterfalls to visit and great areas for bon-fires, beach fun and sledding, not to mention our very own Mont Ripley - as a student, the lift ticket is free! There are also great rates on ski/boarding equipment, waxes, tuning, etc. Being an MTU student has so many perks!
    Am learning a lot

    I am entering my Junior year - MTU has been an amazing experience for me! I've learned so many new things about myself as well as my education - there is always something new to discover! This school is fantastic for students who are serious about getting a great education - the classes are challenging and you will work hard for your grade! However, there are multiple learning centers open for questions and free tutors, as well as helpful professors who love student questions. Don't be afraid to ask!

    Winter Carnival is something unique at MTU. Student organizations build giant snow sculptures, and take part in activities such as Stage Revue and the Beards Competition. Everyone has a great time, and we get two days off of school to celebrate!

    Believe it or not, we have an exceptionally safe campus. I would venture to say that it is downright peaceful. The only thing that campus safety has against them is when you call them to unlock doors that should be open (but lets face it, it really isn't an emergency).
    Greek Life

    Although I am not a part of Greek life, many people are involved. We have a large number of different fraternities and sororities that are always doing crazy things (recall the T-Rex and other awesome snow statutes).
    Clubs and Activities

    You can find any kind of club you want. Don't see the activity you want? make a student group (some of my friends are trying to put together a slackline/juggling/unicycle/rock climbing club
    Great for these types of students

    Nerds, you will find no better school than here. You will not be hard pressed to find a star wars, star trek, or any other big time nerd quote at anytime during the week (even from professors). I actually have an action figure on my person most of the time and people tell me all the time that it is cool (cause it is). Tech is also great for anybody who likes the outdoors. Even if you are borderline outdoorsy you will be drawn in to the peace and adventure just around the corner.

    Aside from the normal unusual traditions, whenever we have a snow day (which is almost never) a group of students can usually be found running across campus dressed in swim wear with goggles. Winter carnival is really too big to explain, I ask that you google it and look at the picture of the 20ft T-rex made out of snow and ice. To ward off the first rain this year a group of students chalked an epic dragon in the sidewalk (high grade art school quality) with the words please don't rain underneath. Broomball is the winter sport that people look forward to, I recommend finding a team as soon as you can if you enroll so that you can experience an amazing game. There are many interesting sites on campus: the stairs to nowhere (literally, they just stop) for one. In addition, there are many inside jokes that you just have to see and that I can't say here.
    Bang for the buck

    It becomes evident during the career fairs how good a school Tech is. You may sit in class and think man, I paid for this...? It happens quite often. Then you start looking for internships/coops/jobs, and you tend to get picked up right away (especially if you are an engineer). Employers love Tech.
    What to do for fun

    You can find anything to do here and do it with anyone. In the warm time, you can find people with slacklines, unicycles, mountain bikes, long boards, fishing poles, runners, hikers, swimmers, weightlifters, basketballs, baseball gloves, footballs, frisbees, and pretty much anything you care to name. Winter sports: we got them all. There are a couple of extra things that you wont find other places: like frisbockey (ultimate frisbee combined with hockey) broom ball (the biggest intramural sport, similar to hockey but better), and winter carnival (look it up on google and see what amazing things we do with the snow). Tech is also big on nerd things like mtg, d&d, LoL, computer games of all kinds, comic enthusiasts, and anything nerdy you could ever imagine.
    Food and Dining

    Food is fairly typical. It isn't always the best, but it is better than average. You are never a far walk from food, every dorm has its own dining hall. Just a tip: don't memorize the schedule of the week, you get sad if you know what's for dinner.
    Dorm Life

    Community is a big thing here. Dorms are split up into house groups that become your family while you are here. Houses compete in many different competitions to see who is the best hall, whether it be team sports, video games, or cardboard boat races (yes, the boats typically float). These weird people become your closest friends, and when you see someone in a cardboard suit get mauled by someone with a clothespin in an intense game of assassins, you don't ask questions.
    Academic Rigor

    Although you will almost never find nothing to do, classes are difficult to say the least. When smart people come together wanting to be the smartest, the bar for academic success is raised. Professors regularly connect real life occurrences of problems and materials, which is something you don't find anywhere.
    Tips for prospective students

    1. Visit campus. Although I never thought this was such a huge step in the decision process, campus is actually bigger and more complex than you would think. 2. Look at groups, especially enterprise systems. 3. Evaluate your priorities. You may be thinking Oh no, if I go to Tech I'll be labeled a nerd! Chances are, you are already being labeled a nerd if you are smart enough to consider Tech, so why not take the risk. (There are much better priorities than this, but this is probably the most important.)

    The people here are really awesome, though some people will look at us and say that we are complete geeks. There is really no place better for engineering, especially if you are interested in hands on programs. Although we are far from civilization, Tech is a place where you can build a strong community with your peers; you will find people on a wide spectrum and you will make friends who like to do the same things you do, as well as try things you never thought you'd do.

    Let me put it this way: In the entire 2011-2012 school year, the worst crime we had commuted on campus was the unwelcome groping of one of our female students. Crime here is little to nonexistent. I have never felt safer.

    Campus safety is just across the main road and you can even find them riding around campus checking all the areas out.
    What to do for fun

    Michigan Tech has many clubs that students can join. Anything from badminton to broomball to band and orchestra. There are many theater productions and concerts that one can attend for free as a student. Across the canal is the ski hill, which the lift ticket is included in your tuition, along with the golf course down the street. There are many beautiful waterfalls and shorelines that one can also explore.
    Food and Dining

    For being a smaller campus, MTU has done a decent job of placing many options for food on campus. AS a student who didn't live in the dorms, I found the small cafes found in various locations on campus to always have something I'd eat. They do many types of chicken wraps, pizza, and subs. Along with quick, on the go snack options like yogurt or muffins. All are nicely prepared and are in a decent price range.
    Dorm Life

    During my college career at MTU, I was and still am a commuter student. I've heard many wonderful things about the dorm life, from meeting friends, to easy access to the cafeteria, to being aware of many activities and getting involved. As a commuter, I do feel I missed out on the opportunity of getting more involved than I am now, but I didn't fine the transition into college life anymore challenging.
    Academic Rigor

    MTU does an excellent job or preparing their students. Most of the classes go very in depth and the professors are more than willing to help you outside of the classroom. Very few teach above your head, but yet still challenge you and your ability. AT times I wonder the purpose of certain classes, but am then releaved when another classes touches on the same elements and I'm already aware of them.
    Tips for prospective students

    Many times teachers require you to buy a book and then never have you use them. To save yourself time and money, go through the first week of class without buying one. If you need to get one last minute, there's the campus bookstore or you can order one off-line very easily. Another tip is to not be afraid to ask for help. Many of the professors like when you seek help outside of class. This shows that you are dedicated both inside and outside the classroom. Many will take the time to help you, and there's no harm in asking. If you can't get a hold of the professor, take advantage of the learning centers. They are there for you.

    Michigan Tech is a beautifully landscaped campus that is a perfect size for those avoiding the large campus. It has enough people and activities where you don't know everyone, but yet you aren't afraid to join in on any activity. MTU does a great job of preparing you for the job and has a great reputation.

    Campus Safety is awesome on the Michigan Tech. campus. Within the first week you will meet the Chief of Police on campus and have the Public Safety number in your phone. You will also see the Chief of Police on and around campus, at sporting events, and even in the dining halls. He's really nice and loves talking to the students too.

    Michigan Tech. is great for any student who wants to further their education and wants to pursue a life of engineering. It doesn't matter what skill level you're at or how many AP classes you take, you will fit in and you will achieve everything you want.

    Some unusual thing about Tech. is the location, which is on the most beautiful peninsula. The wildlife and snow, everything about it is amazing. But underneath all that, there are copper mines. These are fun to explore with friends and you really get a taste of the history of Houghton, MI.

    I couldn't imagine paying any more or less for my own education and getting so much out of it. On top of great academics and meeting so many new people, Tech. also has a great graduation-to-job ratio. It's over 90% and if you apply yourself in the least, you can have a job right out of college.
    What to do for fun

    At Michigan Tech. there is an unlimited amount of activities to do for fun all year round. There are great outdoor trails and a gym that's open late. We have our own ski and snowboarding hill and there are usually some sort of tournaments for video games. Also, Tech. has clubs for every activity imaginable, you name, we have it.
    Food and Dining

    Food and dining at Tech. are just like any other college. You don't get fancy meals, except for holidays, but the food is good. The Dining Halls have good hours and there's a Campus Cafe that's open late so there is food available at all times. Plus Domino's and Walmart aren't too far away either.
    Dorm Life

    Dorm life at Michigan Tech is an amazing experience. There is a hall for everyone and while it might take the first semester or year to find it, once you do you will surely be calling it your home in no time.

    The academics at Michigan Tech are outstanding. They are challenging enough so you have to work to learn the material but its not overwhelming for anyone. In every class you take, you have to think about something and usually try to solve a problem or piece things together.

    We've got the whole blue light system, but really no one is worried about it. You'd think where women are outnumbered 3:1 we'd have a reason to be nervous, but it's really not the case. 98% of the time I'm perfectly comfortable walking around alone at night. There was one incident of groping last year, but our crime stats are very low.

    We have a lot of really successful clubs. Concrete Canoe usually does very well. Our chapter of Engineers Without Borders is fairly well known throughout the national org.

    One of my favorite places to explore is the partially sunken dredger. It's a big kid's playground. Winter Carnival is a huge campus tradition. The campus gets half of a week off in February to celebrate the frigid cold. Huge snow sculptures are built along with tons of other activities. Also, the campus goes wild for broomball.

    Allegedly I ought to be able to land a good job fairly easily after dishing out all the cash to come here. Also, I really have enjoyed most of my time at Tech.
    What to do for fun

    There's hiking, camping, cliff jumping, general exploring, rock climbing, skiing/snowboarding, cross country skiing, and all sorts of clubs. It really is a beautiful place to live and to explore.
    Food and Dining

    It's edible. The food is salty and you'd better be prepared to work out or gain weight if this is your diet. When I lived in the dorms food was more widely available, but since dining services budget has been cut and food is not quite so accessible. The things I do miss from dining hall food: salad bar, sandwich bar, juice and milk machines, cereal, and nutella. Basically I miss the fixings for being available without going to the grocery store.
    Dorm Life

    I lived in DHH my freshman year. I loved the building and the cheap laundry, but I'm not cut out for dorm life. I didn't enjoy people being loud and obnoxious. It's much nicer to live off campus and to be able to see the people you want to when you want to see them, not everyone all the time. Also, the dorms are expensive and for no good reason.
    Academic Rigor

    It's hard, but it's worth it. Most of the professors will bust your balls, but they are also helpful if you're willing to ask for help and make it to office hours.
    Tips for prospective students

    Be prepared to work hard. If you need help, go to the learning centers; they are there for a reason. Look for scholarships all over, it's expensive.

    Michigan Tech is the 3rd safest campus in the United States and the safest campus in Michigan. There are emergency phones everywhere, but they've hardly ever been used. Public Safety is right on campus to ensure that everyone is safe and that nothing goes wrong. There was only one case of theft last year, and the news of it, like all other emergencies, is sent to everyone immediately by the Safety First Alert system. It's awesome being able to walk around the campus at 3 AM and not have to worry at all.
    Clubs and Activities

    Michigan Tech has a club for just about everything, and they are very open about accepting new members and ideas. You can join every group if you really want to, but you probably wouldn't.
    Great for these types of students

    EVERY type of student would have a great time and a great education at Michigan Tech, but ones that are interested in the more technology-focused jobs would fit the best.

    Winter Carnival is a great night for everyone to get out and socialize. Other traditions are our broomball games (which are AWESOME) and our giant snow sculptures (some of them take a month to build)!
    Bang for the buck

    With tuition, you get access to sporting events (like hockey) for free, and you also get access to the Outdoor Adventure Program, which rents gear to go exploring. You get access to unlimited resources in the library and online, and there are tons of labs and study areas that you can utilize.
    What to do for fun

    Broomball, skiing, snowboarding, other sports, driving around, hiking, camping, chilling in the library, working on projects in the IEEE electronics lab, hanging out with other people in your residence hall, and even just walking around is great there.
    Food and Dining

    Most food is excellent there, and if you don't like it, each hall in the residence halls has a food officer that can vote on which foods should be removed and which foods should be brought in. Even with the minimum meal plan, access to the dining hall is unlimited, and you get 4 guest meals plus $150 in vending machine money. Warning: Avoid mashed potatoes in Wadsworth Hall.
    Dorm Life

    If you live in a learning community tailored to your interests, living in the dorms is wonderful. The community is close-knit (at least in Computer Science), and they always have something fun going on.
    Academic Rigor

    Michigan Tech makes sure that you learn everything you have to and a little more. They believe in a well-rounded student, but they don't force you to take very many things that aren't along with your interests. The classes you do take are very thorough and the professors are awesome.
    Tips for prospective students

    Don't be lazy, stay away from parties, and do the assigned readings, and you will be fine.

    Tech is one of the safest campuses. If there is a safety issue, an email and phone alert is sent out to alert the students. If you are walking home at night and don't feel safe, public safety is but a phone call away (and they make you put their phone number into your cell when you're at a presentation during orientation). The blue-light phones throughout campus also connect to public safety and make them easy to contact.
    Greek Life

    There are fraternities and sororities, but I haven't had much contact with them. I do know that they have some parties but they also do quite a bit of volunteer work as part of being a part of greek life.

    There's a club for just about anything at tech and to join pretty much all you have to do is find out when they're meeting and show up. From my experience, the existing members of the the club will be happy to welcome you!

    Tech is primarily an engineering school. If you're looking to go into that field, there's not really a whole lot of places better. On the flip side, there is a pretty good mixture of what could be termed nerdy people and more athletic people as well. Tech really has a place for everyone, so it's just up to the individual to find the group of people that have similar interests to you or that you feel most comfortable with!

    hmmm, for this I think I'll simply make a list: cardboard boat races, mud volleyball, snow sculptures, winter carnival, and those are just a few!
    Bang for the buck

    I won't lie, Tech is expensive to go to. However, if you really work for it: do the best you can in your classes, ask for help when you need it, go to the career fairs, etc. Then by the time you're done with your degree you'll be as ready as can be to take on the world! In fact, I've heard quite a few stories of people getting 4 or 5 job offers before they even graduated from Tech. Fun place, great people, amazing options for the future!
    What to do for fun

    Tech is definitely an outdoorsy type of place. You're not really a resident before you've gone on at least one hike to see some waterfalls. On the flip side, that's not the only thing to do. The dorms have projectors to watch movies, you can just hang out with your friends, the downtown has some pretty cute shops to peruse, every weekend has a movie feature being played in Fischer hall, and there are many socials that are put on; everything from cardboard boat races to camp fires to tight-rope walking, cliff diving, theater events, and the various sports events (hockey and basket ball are the big ones). Perhaps the correct question is: what can't you do at Tech?
    Food and Dining

    No matter how much dorm food can be complained about, It's really not all that bad. There's a rotation of hot food that the dining halls go through but generally the quality isn't bad. Different dorms' dining halls seem to have different specialties. Dorm food not sounding good? There's also the MUB cafeteria, a smoothie stand, and the campus cafe; not to mention the kitchenettes on each floor of the dorms that people can use to make their own food.
    Dorm Life

    It's great to be able to live in areas where people can just hang out and get to know one another. There are plenty of fun activities that the halls do for fun (one of the most famous being the snow statues during winter carnival) and there are a variety of different living places. With 3 dorms and a series of apartments, there's sure to be somewhere for everyone to fit in!
    Academic Rigor

    For quite a few of the classes it really depends on who you have as a teacher and what the class is exactly. Tech has weeder classes that are not to be taken lightly, no matter how easy they may seem at first. Overall, as long as you put your best foot forward and put forth your best effort, there should be no reason why you can't do the work and have fun too!
    Tips for prospective students

    Be prepared to go outside of your comfort bubble; it is possible to not push yourself but there's really no fun in that! As much fun as the teachers are, they do mean business; pay attention to the tips given to you and make sure to juggle your time wisely. For those who need extra help, there is always some waiting in the wings!

    Tuition is much too high ($900 a credit for out of state tuition), but the placement rate is second to none. Tech is one of the safest campuses in the nation as well.

    There's lots to do outdoors in the area! Lake Superior is ten minutes away allowing for water activities, climbing, and fishing. Waterfalls are in abundance. Parties occur often at the 13 frats on campus. We have a decent D1 hockey team!

    Unlimited meal swipes is extremely nice although the entrees could use some improvement. Desserts and pastries are delicious! Special dinners are served around holidays allowing for great food!
    Dorm Life

    Dorms are older, but they have all necessities-pool table, ping pong, foosball. Best of all--a sauna!!

    Classes are extremely difficult and rigorous. But learning centers and coaches are offered in most subjects to help students succeed.

    The campus safety is really great. If you don't feel safe walking home, you can call non-emergency campus police, and someone will pick you up to take you back to your dorm. Also, there are Blue Lights all over campus. Anywhere you see a blue light, there is a phone that takes you directly to Emergency Campus Police.

    Greek life on Tech isn't the stereotypical Greek life. We aren't all about partying. We're devoted to having a familial relationship, and we like to raise money and participate in campus traditions. We do Make a Difference Day, and we do Winter Carnival. I love being Greek!

    The classes are challenging and the professors are experienced for the most part. One fee you'll find on your bill is the Experience Tech fee, which is a great thing. You can get into the hockey games free, get a free season ski lift pass, and lots of other things with that.

    Get involved! We have lots of organizations, trails, and the ski hill to explore, plus you're in the beautiful Keweenaw Peninsula, so its never lacking in things to see.

    The dining hall food is pretty good, considering you don't have to make it yourself. Sometimes it isn't the greatest, but some things are student favorites.

    Campus Safety

    MTU has one of the safest campuses in the U.S. I believe it is ranked 3rd safest in the United States. MTU has it's own police force dedicated to keeping the campus safe.
    Greek Life

    There are many fraternities and sororities here. However, I never joined one or looked into them so I can't say much about them.
    Clubs and Activities

    There are so many clubs up here I could not tell you about all of them. But just to name a few, there is an archery club, hockey club, tennis club, off-roading club, a writing club and so much more.
    Great for these types of students

    Outdoorsy, artistic, athletic, non-athletic, adventurers, those with good study habits, and those who like to have fun.

    The pep band is quite unlike any other pep band in the entire U.S. Our uniforms are untraditional in the pep band sense. They are gold and yellow stripes with suspenders and a funny hat is required to be worn at all events. The pep band follows the football, hockey, and basketball teams wherever they go. They even go to parades. One time, they crashed a parade in Minnesota and the next year they were asked to participate again. The pep band really adds energy and uniqueness to Michigan Tech.
    Bang for the buck

    This is one of the most expensive schools to go to in Michigan. However, if you get a good degree, you will earn a lot of money to pay off your debts and loans.
    What to do for fun

    There are many things to do for fun up here. If you're outdoorsy, you can go hiking at the Tech trails, bike riding, mountain climbing. In the winter there's skiing, both downhill and cross country, skating (open and hockey). You can go explore the Keweenaw peninsula. The area has a rich history in mining that you can explore. If you aren't outdoorsy, you can join any of the many clubs or organizations. If you like art, singing, or playing an instrument, there are acting class/groups to join, the chorus, the pep band, Superior Wind Symphony, Concert Band, Research and Development Big Band, Jazz Lab Band, and more. There is something here for everyone.
    Food and Dining

    The dining halls have decent food. It's nothing spectacular.
    Dorm Life

    I only stayed one year in the dorms so I don't have much to say about it. The dorms are expensive and would recommend going off campus as soon as possible.
    Academic Rigor

    The professors are tough. But that's why MTU is one of the best engineering universities in the U.S.
    Tips for prospective students

    Study a lot and do not procrastinate on your homework.

    This is a difficult university, but if you did well in high school and have good study habits, you will do fine here. There are many opportunities to succeed here and extra-curricular events like hockey and football. They also have a lot of clubs for you to join.

    There was one incident the entire last year, whereas at other colleges (MSU and UofM) those incidents happen weekly.
    Greek Life

    Greek life is really different than other colleges. A lot of people join Greek life at Tech when they wouldn't have joined at another school, because it is not so stereotypical.
    Clubs and Activities

    There are tons of clubs and activities, make sure you check the table tents every meal!
    Great for these types of students

    People who don't like being near their parents or high school friends, and people who don't mind getting their butt kicked in classes.

    You're going to get a very well paying job after you graduate from Tech.

    Lots of video and card games, and you better like adventuring outside.

    They've been cutting back cleaning positions but increasing the price to live in the dorms..

    Tech is the hardest school in the state, hands down. The people are awesome. Make sure you go to class every day though.
