Great for these types of students

If you love to learn and have fun at the same time. MSU is definitely for you. There is a place to fit in for everyone.

Definitely a good place for prospective students. There are people here with future job connections and Graduate student opportunities that shall be very helpful. Also there are various jobs on campus that can build your resume for the future.

    Bang for the buck

It is worth every penny to go to MSU. I believe that anyone could love it here, and it is very affordable.

    Am enjoying being here

Yes I absolutely love it here. The landscape is beautiful. The people are friendly. There is always something fun happening. The residence halls are very lovely even the old ones.

    Am learning a lot

This school involves so much more beyond the classroom. You learn not only what your intended major requires but you also learn valuable life skills. Furthermore, you learn to react with a variety of different people and races which will also help in life.

Great for these types of students

The university is great for students who like living in a small town, those who like being in a quiet and safe area, those who want to major in engineering (the university has one of the best teachers for this major), and for those who are determined to learn.

    Tips for prospective students

Come to university to learn and not just to party. Remember what you are there for and you'll do great.

    Bang for the buck

MSU is one of the cheapest colleges in the nations, even if a student comes from out of state or is a non-resident. You receive great information compared to other colleges and you pay less tuition compared to other colleges.

    Am enjoying being here

MSU is in a small town so fun things to do is movies and a roller skating place. However, The campus life is really good. We have places to shop and other dining places besides the cafeteria in the Student's Union. The enjoyment part is the parties that are done by students/roommates and also during the football season, it feels great being in the stadium surrounded by students who shake their cowbells.

    Am learning a lot

The teachers are really good and friendly. But besides that, the information they give us helps us learn a lot. They provide us with needed materials that students later on use in their chosen careers. If a student does not understand something, he or she can always go to a teacher's office or a tutor provided by the university to receive more help and this helps the student learn a lot.

Great for these types of students

MSU is a great place for any degree, but especially engineers or vets. If you want the whole fun college experience and great academics with a small town feel then State is the place for you.

    Tips for prospective students

    Have fun, but keep focused!

    Bang for the buck

All of the public universities around this area are about the same price, but i definitely think im getting my money's worth here.

    Am enjoying being here

I think our campus is one of the prettiest campuses I've ever been on. It really comes alive on football game days with all of the tents, food, and cowbells. Starkville is a pretty small town, but it still has lots of neat places to eat and little boutiques to shop at!

    Am learning a lot

I absolutely loved my first year at Mississippi State. The teachers are usually willing to help you when you need it. Word of advice: go to class and you'll do fine!

Great for these types of students

Students that love a large campus with a lot of open space, green grounds, loving/family atmosphere and wonderful extra-curricular options.

    Tips for prospective students

Visit the school in your Junior/Senior year of high school. Note that the school is in Starkville, MS which is NOT a huge Metropolis. Research all available college options before coming to MSU, because once your here....We've Got You!!!!!

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is a little steep for those out of state residents coming to this public university. I wish the cost were a lot less and did not include an out-of-state additional charge.

    Am enjoying being here

Absolutely, I could not have chosen a better institution. For a public school this size, one would assume that you would get lost in the crowd however, that is not the case here at MSU!!!!

    Am learning a lot

MSU is a land grant institution that has an excellent Veterinary Medicine Program. A hidden gold mine as compared to other SEC (Southeastern Conference) schools that offer specified studies in Veterinary Medicine/Animal Science.

Great for these types of students

Not just for southern, country folk. Great for most people! Architecture, forestry, veterinary, engineering, design, arts, sciences, business, math, agriculture, health, education, and so many more!

    Tips for prospective students

PLEASE, apply early! For admission, scholarships, and housing especially, it really does make a difference. Try your hardest to meet new people! It makes a huge impact on your experience in college. Finding the right people to hang-out with is so important to how well you do in school and in life. Don't be afraid to be yourself. That's the best you could be! Study, work hard, and don't give-up!!! Stay up late, but not too often. Sleep is very important. ASK your teachers for help. Even if you think you understand, ask for clarification. If you don't feel comfortable asking them, ask a classmate. Walk or ride your bike as many places as possible. I lost the freshman 15 instead of the opposite because I walked places. It makes you feel better, too. However, there is a bus for those late or rainy days! FOCUS! I promise, it affects how well you do. No matter how smart you are, don't be surprised if you don't do as well as you did in high school. It's hard sometimes, but soo worth it!

    Bang for the buck

The facilities here are great! We have a huge gym that has so many activities all the time. There are free classes and some things you pay a small amount to do extra. They go climbing, hiking, white-water rafting, etc. You get this whole place FREE because you're a student. So take advantage of it! It deserves to be utilized! The food here ain't so bad either. You have tons of places to choose from. There's the main cafeteria, which serves tons of different food every day. Then you have the Union, which has 5 or 6 different choices, along with a mini-market store. There are also several places around campus to eat. State also has so many options for financial help. There are tons of scholarships; most aren't where most people look. Just apply early and every year. There are loans and grants available, too. Don't miss-out!

    Am enjoying being here

Being at Mississippi State is quite relaxing to me. The campus is so beautiful it's hard to stay stressed when you walk outside. As an architecture student, I'm cooped-up in the arch. building all the time, but I all I have to do to relax is take a step outside. Something I really love about this school is the sense of school pride you feel wherever you go. The people here love their school! It shows in everyone. Our sports are great, too! We aren't perfect, but I feel like we're on our way! The dorms here are pretty nice no matter where you are. Yes, there are older ones and newer ones, but none that are completely horrible or falling apart! So many people think there is nothing to do in Starkvegas, but really, something is always going on somewhere. You just have to be willing to look! There's a movie theater, bowling, awesome restaurants, shopping, and tons of stuff to do on campus! It really is a great place to be!

    Am learning a lot

Mississippi State offers so many chances to learn in many different ways. They host eight colleges, alone, each carrying multiple schools and majors. Take a look for yourself: http://www.msstate.edu/web/colleges.php The classes here really are great. Once you get past your core requirements and get to your major classes, it's a blast! The teachers are what make a lot of the classes interesting. They don't drone and make it fun to learn.

    Tips for prospective students

It's somewhat known as a near home college. A lot of kids here are from neighboring states and cities. Geographical diversity is not Mississippi State's strong point, but that is completely OK. It gives the students a somewhat homely feel knowing that most of the people are from the same region as them. Also, take advantage of the activities that MSU offers. They truly are fun and provide a great deal of entertainment.

    Bang for the buck

For the teaching, Mississippi State commands a great price. The amount of quality knowledge for this price is definitely worth it.

    Am enjoying being here

Starkville isn't the best city for entertainment, but there's enough to do on campus that students don't really have to have a need to go in town. The people are incredibly friendly, the activities many, the students welcoming, and the food bearable. I love Mississippi State and I wouldn't trade it for another college in an instant.

    Am learning a lot

Sure, every college has the not-so-great teachers. But Mississippi State cuts down on these as much as possible. I am learning in every class I am taking, and the teachers make the classes highly enjoyable. Not only are the teachers great, but they WANT to help you.

Great for these types of students

Honestly, I think the school is great for anybody. It's good for kids from small towns, who will be exposed to so much more. At the same time, students from cities like me, will appreciate the small town feel of the university.

    Tips for prospective students

Go into the school with an open mind because you will be surprised. Just because the school is in Mississippi, do not think that it's some country university. The faculty are some of the most worldly people you meet and it makes you wonder how they ended up at the university, but you're still glad that you had the opportunity to learn from these amazing people.

    Bang for the buck

It is considered one of Kiplinger's best college buys. I personally am an out-of-state student and the out-of-state tuition is less than the in-state tuition at some schools.

    Am enjoying being here

I love being here. Everybody is so nice, and all the professors honestly care about the students. The students at the university are so nice, and love the school, and we want you to love the school as much as we do.

    Am learning a lot

Mississippi State is one of the most underrated schools when it comes to learning. I know personally, I learned so much more from the professors at this university than I ever expected.

    Campus Safety

There are always campus police around and if you ever feel uncomfortable, they will come escort you to where ever you would like to go.

    Greek Life

Greek Life is a big part of Mississippi State but not the only part! you will feel just as included without being greek as you would if you were. However, the Greek life here is amazing and there are many fraternies and sororities to chose from to best suite you.

Great for these types of students

Anyone would find a place here at State.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Mississippi State is known for ringing cowbells at football games, but you have to be given a cowbell- don't buy your own or it is bad luck!

    What to do for fun

Historic downtown Starkville is the place to be. However there are many things on campus to do as well. There are always events going on at the drill field and many musical artists come to perform. Football is an awesome event at MSU. Ring those cowbells!

    Food and Dining

There are many food options at MSU. There are two cafeterias and a union with fast foods. There is a wide variety of options to chose from.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life at Mississippi State University is great. There are three- and soon to be four- different kinds of dorms. There are the retro, renovated, and hotel style. The retro and the renovated are great for meeting people and having a close relationship with the people in your hall. The hotel style is more roomy-it even has a bathroom and shower!

    Academic Rigor

There are always people in every academic college here at State that will help you with what you need. The library offers a variety of things to help you with your academic journey and a helpful thing to do would be to get involved in a study group!

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved! It is most likely harder to get involved in college then it was in high school so find something of interest and put yourself out there. Be sure to also meet your dorm mates in the hall and always make time for studying. Studying-not cramming- is the key to a successful college career.

    In three sentences

Mississippi State University offers a very wide variety of things to get involved in educationally and for pleasure. It is a large campus feel with a close knit community. You will always find help and support if you need it; I love it here at State!

Great for these types of students

Mississippi State is a wonderful place for all dedicated students that would like to earn a useful education. If a student is looking for a good group of friends, there are organizations such as BSU that provide a great environment and plenty of fun activities. However, if a prospective student is shy and would like a smaller group, the residence halls also provide floor meetings, study groups, and game nights to their residents.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not procrastinate. When an instructor gives a time limit on an assignment and it seems like a long time, chances are there's a reason why he or she has allotted that amount of time. It is usually because it will actually take that long to effectively accomplish the task asked in the assignment. Therefore, if you intend to do well in your classes, get a head start while the information is fresh on your mind, and don't wait until the last minute to rush the assignment.

    Bang for the buck

Mississippi State is very affordable for most families including those out of state. Depending on a student's intended major, the cost may be more than expected. However, the feeling of being safe around campus, well-educated by your instructors, and confident in the future are all vital elements that are offered at State.

    Am enjoying being here

Mississippi State offers a beautiful campus and plenty of activities. The excitement of football games and pep rallies makes the campus feel united and alive.

    Am learning a lot

Mississippi State is equipped with challenging instructors who push their students to strive for excellence. The value of knowledge is apparent in the classroom and around campus.

Great for these types of students

Any student! But the college is known for a great engineering program and agriculture/ animal studies

    Tips for prospective students

Be active in school groups in order to meet new people. Go out for a team, a club, or sorority/fraternity. Any place is a great place to meet friends. Also don't party too hard, keep up the hard work in classes and actually go to class, you will be rewarded in the end with grades and even some potential bonus points!

    Bang for the buck

Mississippi State is really good with scholarship money and waiving out-of-state tuition. The class difficulty and presentation of new information and the price together make this school a great choice.

    Am enjoying being here

I love it here! As a student far from home, it is kind of lonely at times, but the honors college, your academic college, and all your teachers try to make meeting new people fun and easy. I also enjoy the campus and the intramurals they have to offer.

    Am learning a lot

Some of the classes I had to take were repeats of high school but that just made it easier to adjust to being far away from home. Also it boosted my GPA. I have learned many things about independence and new facts from the other classes I have taken and am taking.

    Tips for prospective students

In choosing a residence hall, take into account a community feeling. Mississippi provides the best of all worlds to accommodate students. The best friendships are made in a close-knit setting.

    Bang for the buck

The best education does not come cheap. With Mississippi State university it is affordable. Especially for all the perks it comes with. While on campus each semester, it feels as though we really are blessed to focus on our education without a constant reminder of cost.

    Am enjoying being here

As research shows, the campus of Mississippi State University is quite the size. I am in love with everything it has to offer. As a student, I can visit the Sanderson workout facility, enjoy various meals in the union, and attend as many functions that are often put on. These are only a few reasons for my enjoyment.

If you love college football, we're a proud member of the SEC. If you love the outdoors (I don't necessarily, but my boyfriend does) there's campsites and hiking near by. If you like shopping or taking nice walks around a gorgeous campus on a beautiful day (more up my alley) it's perfect too! Most importantly, if you're looking for a great education that's affordable..MSState is the place for you!

    Tips for prospective students

Visit and visit often! Though a small town, there is always so much to do and we love visitors! Like I said before, the people at Mississippi State are incredible; they want to show off our beautiful school and help you in any way they can. Also, apply early (like at midnight on the day the application opens) to ensure the best dorms!

    Bang for the buck

We were rated Best Value by several organizations. Mississippi State is truly a place to get a great education for an affordable price.

    Am enjoying being here

I absolutely love Mississippi State. From the beautiful campus to the SEC football games to hundreds of organizations to be involved in on campus, I can't get enough!

    Am learning a lot

I am not only learning from the best in my field as a Meteorology major, but I am learning about myself too. The great people and environment at Mississippi State makes you want to be a better person. What I've learned outside of the classroom is priceless, and what I've learned in the classroom is invaluable to my future. I am definitely learning a lot at Mississippi State!

JUST COME TO MSU! I mean if you spent all this time reading down to this section, obviously you're interested haha. No for real, it's totally awesome here, I love it

    Tips for prospective students

The only tips I would suggest to incoming freshmen is apply as early as possible for school AND for classes. If you already have friends at MSU that know the same classes that you are about to take, then ask them for the right teachers. Get involved as much as you can your freshmen year because after that, it'll be really hard to get involved because the classes get harder and harder after your freshmen year!!

    Am enjoying being here

Like I said above, it's amazing being here. It definitely is worth going here because I am a pre-med student wanting to go to UMMC (University of Mississippi Medical Center) and I think I have a good chance of getting there because of MSU. I LOVE it here: 1) because most of my friends go here from high school, 2) because I have a bunch of friends ALL over the country including people from Washington, Pennsylvania, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Texas, Arizona, California, Wisconsin and EVEN people from all over the world like Japan, Korea, India, Iran, Australia, etc. So if you don't think you will fit in, well think again.....I promise there's a place for everyone here on campus

    Academic Rigor

Mississippi State has a LOT to offer: I know a lot of colleges do too, but what makes MSU different from the rest is the great environment of friendly people and staff. They are sooo awesome, especially the folks here because they'll make you feel like you're at home. I'm not even kidding, it's amazing here because I have a bunch of friends who have gone to other universities for college visits and said that people over there aren't as friendly which is why they picked MSU. I'm a sophmore at MSU but I'm learning so much about the campus activities, involvement on my campus and even in my community - man it's great. Totally recommend this for anyone

Mississippi State is great for just about everyone!

    Tips for prospective students

Mississippi State is a great place to come if you are interested in engineering or if you are unsure exactly what you want to do. MS State has a wide variety of majors, and if there is something that you want to do that they don't have, they will work with you!

    Bang for the buck

Mississippi State has a great engineering program, which is why I am here. Tuition continues to increase as the school tries to grow, but it is still way less than the other schools of its caliber.

    Am enjoying being here

I have made some of the best friends of my life here.

    Am learning a lot

I learn something new everyday. It is true here at Mississippi State - you get out what you put in.

there are always campus policeman patrolling. they are very friendly and work hard to keep students safe. there is also a service called dawg patrol, which is comprised of students hired to escort other students across campus at night.

    engineering, science, service-minded

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

the ringing of cowbells at football games has been a tradition for almost one hundred years.

    Bang for the buck

msu is listed as one of forbe's top deals for a higher education.

    What to do for fun

there are concerts that pass through on a regular basis on campus, including the legendary b.b. king. there are tons of intramural teams and clubs too. from video game clubs to cinema clubs to book clubs, there is something for everyone at msu.

    Food and Dining

the food in the cafeteria is good, but it gets old quick. however, there are many different styles of cooking to choose from. these include homestyle cooking, american, italian, mexican, and indian. the student union has chik-fil-a, panda express, zoca's (a mexican restaurant), panda express sushi, mississippi steak, and toss it up (a sandwich/salad restaurant).

    Dorm Life

dorm life is absolutely amazing. i stay in mckee hall, which was recently renovated. the rooms are not necessarily large, but they are perfectly sized in my opinion. the resident advisers are always planning activities for their floor, from pizza parties to study sessions to workouts. mckee even hosted club mckee after every home game. the ra's would transform the entire lobby into a dance club!

    Academic Rigor

msu is known for its engineering department and for good reason. from day one, students are expected to start thinking and working like engineers. the introduction classes for the different engineering majors give students a look at what their major offers and hands-on experience with projects engineers in each respective field may have to deal with. these classes are highly engaging and beneficial.

    Tips for prospective students

go to class. it is a little cliche', but it's true. college can be an enjoyable experience, but not if you choose to waste the money going towards your education by sleeping in.

    In three sentences

msu has an absolutely breathtaking campus. the engineering curriculum is challenging and engaging, pushing each student to apply themselves inside and outside of the classroom. best of all, the people and seemingly endless campus activities make each day fun and exciting.

Students experiences with Dorm Life all depends on your personality and what side of the campus you live on. The North side of campus is where most of the honor students and the athletes live and the south side of campus is mostly where the incoming freshmen and sophomores live. The North side of campus is quieter and more students use their time there to study and on the south side of campus they're more activities going on throughout the year.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on the class and professor determines the level of difficulty the class will be, some professors teach the same class but have two different styles of teaching you just have to predetermine and ask previous students about the professors to find out which one works best for learning style. No class is to hard because, the professors have office hours you can see them, Ta's available to help ,and Mississippi State provides tutoring for most subjects. Even though the work may seem to hard and over whelming once you understand and flourish in the class, all your hard work will have payed off for you benefit.

    Tips for prospective students

For incoming students I would recommend that students take all classes seriously, if not their GPA is not going to be as high as they want which affects their future. Ever though some classes are easy when it comes to the tests and finals you would be lost without studying ahead of time. I would also recommend to balance school with social activities to much of either one could be very stressful. Lastly I would recommend that the students should always go to class because sometime that is all professors look for, effort and attendance.

    In three sentences

Mississippi State University is an outstanding university, capable of attaining academic greatness as well as maintaining social activities. Although, the classes are hard the professors are great at making the work fun and interesting. Overall Mississippi State is a great school to attend the experiences, and education you gain here are life changing.

    Campus Safety

Mississippi State is a pretty safe campus. There are always people riding around on golf carts patrolling the campus. I always feel pretty secure when I'm walking with a friend.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I would have to say the holiday where some people don't wear shoes like the entire day. It is a bit weird for me because I find that so disgusting. But its something that will be seen pretty often.

    What to do for fun

No place is fun all of the time, and considering Starkville is a college town there is only so much to do. Football game weekends are the best because the campus has many activities going on but a regular weekend the camous might be dead.

    Food and Dining

The food is okay. The cafe has its days depending on which one you choose to dine-in. Last semester I was either in the Perry, the Templeton, or McArthur.

    Dorm Life

I stayed in one of the newest dorms, South Hall, and loved it. I will be staying off campus for the upcoming year but dorm life is what you make of it. We had our own bathrooms so I didn't make many friends but in the other dorms you are liable to meet more people.

    Academic Rigor

Some teachers you have to meet with personally if you want the extra help. The classes are packed with a lot of students so in order to keep up, e-mail and stay in touch with your teachers. Never be afraid or too lazy to say I NEED HELP!

    Tips for prospective students

Students preparing for college need to come disciplined. There is no one there to make you do anything so be aware. I always say to myself I am paying for this, which is used as motivation to stay focused.

    In three sentences

Mississippi State University is a great school. You must come prepared to learn and always prioritize. There is no such thing as free time in college.

    Campus Safety

Campus Safety is awesome. There is a police station on campus. Police officers and volunteers will walk you anywhere you want to go after 6pm everyday. There is always a police officer around.

    What to do for fun

On campus there are always parties to go to. Events such as ice cream meetings, human bowling, movies in the field, etc are always going on. In the surrounding city, Starkville, there is a movie theater, bowling alley, strip malls, tattoo shops.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria has mostly good food, but the on campus restaurants are mostly foreign foods. They could stand to have more American restaurants.

    Dorm Life

The dorms that I have stayed in have showers that are senseless. There isn't much to do in the dorms. Not a lot of people respect the courtesy hours.

    Academic Rigor

Teachers are very good at helping students with homework, all types of questions, and free tutoring.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you pay close attention to your financial aid and due dates for all assignments.

    In three sentences

The classes and teachers are great. They could have a better selection of restaurants. The dorm halls that I have stayed in could use an upgrade.

    Campus Safety

When it comes to campus safety, I believe it is something that I havenâ??t seen before. It was maybe predictable for the campus to have its own police department on campus, but not emergency phone lines throughout the campus as well. There are many of these phone lines and they are easy to find, even at night through the bright blue lights they have. Most of these are out in the open and are easy to see just in case of emergencies.

Great for these types of students

    ALL TYPES!!

    Bang for the buck

When it came to scholarships, I did not get any from MSU. At the same time, going here will make everything worth your while. MSU has amazing programs and opportunities for students. Before graduating, you are almost destined a job because MSU will have you ready.

    What to do for fun

From time to time the school has events that helps get students involved on campus. There is almost always something going on at MSU.

    Food and Dining

The food at MSU is pretty good, but the variety of food on campus is what gets MSU over. MSU has two main cafeterias. One is for more homemade style food and one is for fast food. The Union, fast food cafeteria, has over six different fast food places (most highlighted is Chick-fil-a and Starbucks). There are also other locations on campus for food. Pick and choose!

    Dorm Life

It is what it is. The More you pay the BETTER the dorm you have. The university could repair certain old buildings, but the people that are in the dorms are nice. The janitors do very well in making sure each dorm is clean, most importantly the restrooms and community showers. Everyone has certain visitation hours that are very reasonable. Dorm advisors sometimes schedule cookouts to get dorm members more social.

    Academic Rigor

MSU is one of the top Engineering schools in the country, and I believe is the top engineering school in the south. MSU has staff that actually would love to help their students. Despite the sometimes big classes, if you have a question about a lesson you can go to certain department buildings on campus that can give you FREE tutoring (tutoring hours usually run throughout the whole day). Also even if you are not wishing to study in engineering it is still a good campus to consider.

    Tips for prospective students

When it comes to college in general and not just MSU, you have to be mature. Literally EVERY PERSON I know that didn't excel in their classes is because of their maturity. As long as you go to class, you have just that much more of a possibility of graduating. The main challenge for incoming students is just adjusting to the campus.

    Tips for prospective students

Be a resident and arrive early, that's the only way to get a parking space on game days.

    Bang for the buck

You'd think for as much as you are spending for this place and the fact that you clearly bought a parking decal that you would get a parking space. Be prepared to not get a dorm unless you are a freshman because you aren't guaranteed anything here.

    Am enjoying being here

It is alright but if you live in a dorm, or are going to be put in one, be prepared for the noisy freshman, fire drills at 12:00 p.m., and the every ringing cow bell. Also be prepared to not have a parking space, especially on game day.

    Am learning a lot

Plenty of interesting classes, but they all seem to be so small and all at the same time so you basically have to race to get in or virtually stalk it. There is also a tendency to cancel classes for a semester that you are already registered for.

    Tips for prospective students

A tip for prospective students would be to tour the campus after you move into your dorm so that you can get a feel of how it is. Always check your school email, I don't think I can emphasize that enough! Check out bulletin boards frequently. There are always events going on around campus.

    Bang for the buck

I think everyone could agree and say that there isn't a college that is cheap. However, MSU tuition is fairly priced to me, compared to other school that I were looking at my senior year in high school.

    Am enjoying being here

I enjoy being at MSU. It is very fun. I wouldn't call MSU a party school compared to other colleges, I would call MSU a fun school because there are a lot of fun and neat things to do, that are clean fun.

    Am learning a lot

I have learned a lot just by being a student at MSU. Not only have I learned educational aspects, I have learned just general life aspects by meeting other people, attending class, and also attending the many programs that they have.

    Am enjoying being here

Their are so many clubs and organizations you can get involved in on campus. The leaders of these clubs and organizations welcome every student with open arms and aren't prejudice towards anyone.

The teachers at this school don't just read out of the book like some do they are constantly challenging each and every student; you can tell that they are interested in the students and also that they have a passion for their job.

    Tips for prospective students

I would apply to the Honors College, even if you don't think you will make it. You get to enroll in classes earlier, and you have a chance to live in the Honors-exclusive dorm, which is one of the best on campus.

    Bang for the buck

I can't really attest to this as far as tuition goes, because I don't have that much knowledge of other campuses to compare it to, but I can say for certain that the meal plan is great, and both the amount and quality of the food makes it completely worth it.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is beautiful, and all the buildings are fairly close together (10 minutes' walk, tops). The many groups on-campus go out of their way to arrange events and socials, that really make students feel welcome.

    Academic Rigor

The classes so far are great, and the teachers really seem to know their material.

Great for these types of students

It's great for anyone who is looking for or can get used to small-town living. It's a heavily engineering school, but has a lot of other stuff, as well. Football fans will definitely like it here.

    Tips for prospective students

Go to class, study, work hard, take it seriously, but enjoy yourself in the process.

    Bang for the buck

It's fairly affordable, and the programs are good.

    Am enjoying being here

It's a small town, but campus is usually active, and you get used to the slower pace. It's a more local atmosphere, and the town is basically centered around the school. It's easy to connect with people. Whatever your interests are, you can usually find some way to involve them. Football is a huge thing here on campus, and even if you're not into sports the atmosphere is enjoyable.

    Am learning a lot

My classes have been great so far. Difficult, but with hard work they are not a problem. They have been challenging and engaging, and while some are better than others, all of them are doable if you're willing to put forth the effort.

MSU is a great choice for those interested in going to veterinary school. That's what I'm going for! If that is you, you should definitely go to Mississippi State's College of Veterinary Medicine's website and check out the Early Entry Program. It is a wonderful shortcut to getting accepted to vet school before you have even started your undergraduate work!

    Tips for prospective students

Take a visit to campus and you will fall in love!

    Bang for the buck

For in-state students, it is definitely worth every penny, as it should be very affordable. I am an out-of-state student, however, and am paying quite a bit to attend school here even with institutional scholarships. I don't regret my choice to go to State, though! I feel like it is much more affordable than many other out-of-state schools would be.

    Am enjoying being here

It is a very nice school with lots of things to get involved with. It is also a very BIG school, which can be overwhelming at times. The town of Starkville has everything you would need, but there isn't much to do off campus.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is one of the best I have heard of. Throughout the night there is people riding around called the bully patrol. Anytime after dark you can call them up and they will come escort you either on foot or with a golf cart. They will be there within minutes after you call.

    What to do for fun

A lot of times I just hang with my friends. I enjoy going to the parties the fraternities and sororities throw, hanging out around campus, and participating in different organizations.

    Food and Dining

The food and dining is awesome. With the freshman meal plan you will never go hungry. There is The Perry which has everything you can think of from delicious dinner, salad bar, dessert counter, an international meal and a waffle maker. They have a Burger King, Starbucks, Panda Express, a bakery and many others. They also provide you with a 100 flex dollars which is the next best thing to cash. I enjoy eating everyday and feel as though I get my moneys worth.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life at State varies. They have a lot of different dorms to choose from. They have the newer dorms which is a little bit on the expensive side but comes with great amenities and the older dorms which is where a lot of the population stay. Regaurdless of the dorms you stay in you meet a lot of great people and the RA's will make you feel as though your at home.

    Academic Rigor

Mississippi State does everything they can to make sure their students is attending classes and keeping their GPA up. The strictness varies from the courses you take to the teachers. Some are stricter then others, but all make sure you will be pushed to the best of your ability.

    Tips for prospective students

For any prospective students I would say keep your priorities straight. Do not let your social life affect your means to becoming successful. Also always do your best because second chances are not always given.

    In three sentences

Mississippi State is a great college. It is a great learning experience because of the many opportunities on campus. You meet a lot of welcoming people and learn as you proceed.

    Campus Safety

I honestly can say that I have never felt more safe in a place before. Recently there have been a few incidents in which the reputaion of the school may have been tarnished with a shooting of a student, but it was an isolated incident and it was the first of its nature in the history of the university. The night that it happened everyone was so shocked. The words I heard repeatedly were How could this happen, Starkville is such a safe place. Although this horrible incident did occur, the entire student body and community came together and became stronger and you could definetly feel it in the air.

Not only that but most of the Student Association, which runs the campus are people who are active in the greek community. It is definetly a great way to meet people, create better leadership skills, and enhance a persons character with sacred traditions.

    Clubs and Activities

There is literally anything that anyone could imagine wanting to take part in whether its a bowling team or cycling club, MSU has it all.

Great for these types of students

Fun, energetic, dedicated, loyal, honest, intelligent, outgoing, spontaneous

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I NEED MORE COWBELL!!!! I think thats enough said about traditions.

    Bang for the buck

    Best bang for the buck.

    What to do for fun

There are so many things in Starkville despite its small town atmosphere. On days when the weather is absolutely perfect outside its so easy to find a couple of friends and pitch a hammock in a tree and just hangout and relax in between classes. If thats not enough there is always the refugee where you can go and have a picnic or just go wander around outside. Now during football season of course its all about tailgating. It is the most fun I think any freshman will be able to have besides hanging out in the left field lounge during baseball season. Either way you're with good friends and most importantly your bulldawg family. After the games you can get a bite to eat in any of the family owned and operated restraunts such as Strombolis or Lil Dooeys in the Cotton District which is only a couple minutes away from campus wether you walk or drive.

    Food and Dining

The perry is good on fried chicken wednesday but you better get there early or else you will have a huge line. Other than that the food is generally pretty descent. McArthur is really good too, its alot more quiet and calm but that is because its also extremely small. The Templeton is good but that is where the althletes tend to eat. Other than that the Union is excellent with Chik fil A or Panda Express and Zoca being my favorites. But be careful not to spend your flex dollars too fast because they really can disappear on you.

    Dorm Life

My dorm life experience was amazing. I lived in Creswell and the reason why I loved it so much was because we could keep our doors open and everyone in the hall would just come in and out and we would all just hangout. My closest friends to this day all lived in Cresswell my freshman year. Also back then, it was the Day One dorm. I would advise people into partaking in Day One because not only are you helping out the community but you are also making your resume look good.

    Academic Rigor

I have had classes that were easy and I have had classes that were hard. The best advise I could give anyone about classes is to go and before signing up for classes ask around to find out a teacher's reputation. That will help you to know if the class will be hard or easy.

    Tips for prospective students

Go to class. From personal experience going to class is literally the most important thing anyone can do. Also, have fun. You're only in college once, but do not go too crazy. There will be parties but you will learn will quickly when to and when not to party. MSU is in the SEC so the football scene is amazing. You must attend at least one game even if you hate the sport. It is nothing like anything you will ever do in your life. The cowbells and the Maroon and White atmosphere just get you so excited to part of such an amazing Bulldawg family. Also join a club or activity of some kind. Its the best way that you can meet people and it will make your experience there so much better.

    In three sentences

I'm glad to be apart of such an amazing, caring, and tradition based Bulldawg family. The school is so amazing inside and out and it is so historically rich. The knowledge I have gained at MSU is by far greater than anything I would have ever been able to gain anywhere else.

Dorm life is all around a great experience, helps you meet people you wouldnt normally meet and gives you a support right outside of your room! I am very close to my entire hallway!

Your safety is MSU's highest priority. We have lampstands lit up 24/7 that are blue specifically for emergencies. Just press the button on one and it notifies the police of a distress call and they know exactly where you are on campus.

    Dorm Life

Life in the residence halls has been the most amazing experience of my life thus far. You make many friends and meet more people than you can count or remember. Residence halls on campus provide your home away from home and a great social atmosphere that makes you feel accepted.

    Academic Rigor

The academics at State are tough, but all in a good way. The teachers allow you to learn the information they've given you on your own, but of course are willing to help in any way they can if you don't understand something.

    Tips for prospective students

I would suggest learning what your specific study habits are before fully engaging in classes. I learned that the hard way. Over 3 years I had to learn how to study and what works best for me.

    In three sentences

Choosing to go to Mississippi State University right out of high school was the best decision I ever made. I have made friends here that will be by my side for life. Besides the amazing social atmosphere, the campus is consistently kept beautiful by our landscapers and has really challenged me academically.

Security on campus is always pretty good. The campus police patrol at night, are friendly and personable, and respond quickly to an emergency. There may be a few gaps in the net, but it's normally a non-issue.

    Clubs and Activities

With the wide variety of students in the campus, an even wider variety of clubs can be found! Food science, acapella choir, anime enthusiasts, video-game connoisseurs, volunteer organizations- there's something for everyone and everything, so don't be afraid to look into it and try new things!

Now that the ban's been lifted on artificial noisemakers (home games only, now!), you'll be sure to hear students BRING THE RING, a longstanding symbol of good luck for the MSSTATE students. But remember, it's bad luck if you get your first cowbell yourself- it has to be given to you!

    Food and Dining

I'll be honest with you, the campus is NOT vegetarian friendly. Barring that, there are a lot of options on campus, from the cafeteria (which hosts a variety of options ranging from international cuisine to southern comfort food) to the Student Union (which has a variety of fast-food reasons) to the Student Bakery to more, there's always some place to eat on campus.

    Campus Safety

I think that MSU should fix a few things as far as security. I wish that the campus had more light at night (it's a little dark in some places) and dorm security isn't the best in some dorms. However, the campus police are incredible and always helpful.

    Greek Life

I am not Greek but I am debating it for next year. Many of my friends are Greek and I can assure that the Greek organizations at MSU are always professional and classy. If you are even a remotely interested in it, you should contact someone for more information.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a ton of clubs on campus. Because I was in the band last year (which was so much fun, btw!), I wasn't able to join any of them. However, this year, I plan on going to the club fair to find a club for me to join this coming fall. You can find a list of all the organizations at http://www.one.msstate.edu/join/

Great for these types of students

It is great for any type of student. There really is a place for everyone. Academically, I know that MSU is very strong in Engineering, Veterinary Medicine, Agriculture, Business and Forest Resources.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I'm sure that any MSU student would tell you about the cowbell when asked about unusual traditions. At first, I thought that the cowbell was a little strange, but there's no feeling in the world that can compare to ringing your cowbell with a stadium full of people. I felt unified with the entire school! As for locations, my favorite is State Fountain Bakery (right beside Perry Cafeteria). When it's cold outside, I always go to the bakery to get a hot tea and iced dog bone cookies! Yum!

    Bang for the buck

I think that any college is expensive and that's why I gave only four stars. However, I wouldn't want the money that I have to pay for college to go anywhere except MSU. And I think that it is definitely worth THAT.

    What to do for fun

There is always some type of event going on on campus nearly every day (or night). Watching movies on the Drill Field, Zumba classes, or just hanging out with friends around campus. Personally, I haven't left campus that much so I can't really give any advice for anything off campus.

    Food and Dining

During my first semester, I got a little sick of the food but then I started walking around campus more and I found a ton of great, new places to eat. I definitely recommend the Ultimate meal plan for freshmen because you get to get free meals from most of the restaurants on campus.

    Dorm Life

I loved living in the dorm. I made so many friends and they quickly became like a second family to me. My favorite memories of college are the nights that we would all stay up late in the dorm lobby and watch Disney movies!

    Academic Rigor

The academics at MSU are challenging but that's what we go to college for. If you study and go to class, you won't have a problem.

    Tips for prospective students

Come visit MSU. Once you're here, then you'll know right away if this is where you're meant to be.

    In three sentences

MSU is a place for everyone. I couldn't imagine being anywhere else. I know that I chose the right college, both academically and socially.

Great for serious students who want a good education to secure a good job after graduating.

    Bang for the buck

College can be costly but there are plenty of opportunities for obtaining finances. I work and have obtained loans and financial aid. I think Mississippi State offers an A1 education for the price.

    What to do for fun

There are a number of rec rooms available on campus. The dorms have ping pong and foosball and the like in the lobby. We also have a very liberal visitor policy for the dorm. Sporting events are allways popular There are clubs and other off campus entertaining that students can choose to attend.

    Food and Dining

Students have a number of choices and places to eat. Meal plans are available as well as easy access to a variety of places on and off campus.

    Dorm Life

My dorm room is comfortable and great for studying. The rules are very easy to follow.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are not all a cake walk but with studying and recognizing when to seek help ie tutoring, you can pass.

    Tips for prospective students

Keep your goals in mind and remember why you are attending college.

    In three sentences

The environment at Mississippi State is great. After I attended orientation and later spoke to a counselor, I had the confidence of knowing I will succeed and graduate. The key is to study hard and learn to prioritize my time between school, working and socializing.

    What to do for fun

On-campus, there is always something going on. There are clubs and organizations for people interested in almost anything: music, your major, manga/anime, etc. Starkville has plenty of restaurants. The Golden Triangle Region (Starkville, Columbus, West Point) is historic and hosts various events. The drive is reasonable within the region.

    Food and Dining

MSU just recently added Subway to the students' options. There are all sorts of options for students to use their meal plans, like in the union after 4 pm, students can use block instead of flex to buy food.

    Dorm Life

MSU opened a few dorms just this year (2012) which are very nice. Honors dorm is nice as well, especially since honors classes are in the same building. Dorming can be a bit expensive depending on where you live, but there are plenty of other places to live off-campus as well.

    Academic Rigor

There are very few easy classes at MSU. The freshman courses are easy to start then get increasingly difficult to help students adjust to college courses and expectations.

    Tips for prospective students

Take a tour and talk to the people in your department. If you go to talk to someone who works there, they are more likely to know what classes you should take and give you one-on-one advice about the school and your degree program.

    In three sentences

Mississippi State has a beautiful (sizable) campus. The teachers are all well-qualified, proud of their school, and willing to take time to talk to students. The school goes through a lot of trouble to help freshmen adjust all the way to seniors with Pathfinders, tutorials, and well-trained RAs in the dorms.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a lot of clubs here to get involved with. The Wesley foundation, Baptist student union, pre-vet club, pre-med club, and residence hall association have a ton of members so it is easy to meet new people with similar interests.

Great for these types of students

It is great for students who want a larger university but still have that small school feel. The people here are friendly and laid back and the life style is definitely slower paced than an urban college would be.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The cowbell is a staple here at Mississippi state but you can't buy yourself your first cowbell, somebody else has to buy it for you. The chapel of memories is also an unusual and awesome study location. It was built from the bricks of the oldest and largest dorm that burned down.

    What to do for fun

Tailgating is a huge thing here in the fall and it is absolutely fantastic. There are free concerts throughout the year with some pretty decent bands playing in them. Also there is lunch and bowl which is fun to do and the movies are a pretty happening place on Friday nights.

    Food and Dining

The food here is so-so. It is on par with cafeteria food and the options in the union are pretty good. There are tons of vending machines around campus that accept debit cards so don't worry about bringing spare change.

    Dorm Life

Some dorms are fantastic like you are living in a hotel, but others are absolutely miserable. The dorm I lived in was always cold and people loved to pull the fore alarm at 3 in the morning during finals week. So apply early and choose wisely!

    Academic Rigor

The professors are great. There is a fair mix of hard and easy classes but overall I feel the classes are on par for an institution of higher learning.

    Tips for prospective students

    Dorm Life

    Bang for the buck

For an in-state student like myself, the $20k or so a year for tuition and fees may seem a little steep, but it's well-worth the cost. The engineering departments and the school of vet. medicine are top notch. Actually, anything related to math or science is really good at State.

    What to do for fun

MSU is part of the SEC, so tailgating in the Junction is an integral part of any game day experience. You can toss a Frisbee on the drill field or put up a hammock somewhere and take a nap.

    Food and Dining

I've had limited experience with the food at MSU, but Perry, Starbucks, Chickfila, and Panda Express are all really good.

    Dorm Life

Campus is pretty boring on weekends because most students go home but during the week there are usually events that are happening. Food and Dining

There's the Colvard Student Union that includes a Chick-fil-a, Zoca, Panda Express, Mississippi Steak, Toss it up, Starbucks, and a newly added Smoothie place. On top of that there's the cafeteria best known as The Perry and a Subway and Burger King located around the campus. I will say that you most likely will become tired of the cafeteria so save your flex dollars on your meal plan to eat in the Union.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are pretty nice. The new residence halls come with private bathrooms and they're spacious just in case you don't like to feel cramped next to your roommate (South, Oak, Ruby, Hurst, North) Note though that the much nicer dorms are more expensive about $2,800 a semester. The other dorm that is nice (and not as pricey) is Cresswell which is located right across from South.

When I went for orientation, the food was decent. It may not have been at its best because there was also a cheerleading camp that same week. I don't know if it will be better during the school year, but I hope it will be better.

    Dorm Life

I haven't stayed in my dorm yet, but the virtual tour made it seem somewhat spacious. However, it still has community bathrooms and I am very cautious about germs.

    What to do for fun

Come Fall, there will always be something to do.

    Food and Dining

I won't lie, I haven't even been at the Perry yet. I've had people tell me it's not great. I ate at the Student Union or in my dorm, and occasionally off campus. Panda Express is really good and Einstein Bagels' Pizza Bagels are the BEST. It's up to you.

    Dorm Life

Currently I'm staying in Hull for the summer, and it isn't bad. The dorm is smack dab in the center of campus. You can see the cafeteria, Student Union, and Stadium from there. In the fall I'm staying in Oak, and the rooms are pretty large. Definitely reminds me of a hotel, but is pretty private and quiet for those who want more people.

    Academic Rigor

Definitely not high school. Be prepare for any kind of professor and ask for help. See if you can find someone that went before and get their old tests to study. You will need it.

    Tips for prospective students

Start looking for scholarships NOW, MSU may not give you all the money you need. Start making contacts so you can have people to go to help you when you need it. Last, remember there is a time and place for everything and just enjoy your college years, but not too much.

    In three sentences

One main tradition we have is the use of cowbells. It is with what we show our pride during football season. Campus Safety

Campus safety is a big thing for our campus. We are one of the biggest open campuses in the state. This does not mean we have the most problems with security and safety. We have a group known as bully patrol that does an amazing job at keeping us safe. They do many things to make the campus more welcoming and comfortable. If someone does not feel comfortable walking across campus by them self, they can call bully patrol and they will come out and escort you home.

Great for these types of students

Students that are looking for a little more of a challenge but also some freedom in their lifestyle should definitely consider MSU. They will make you think and open your mind to knowledge you never imagined to learn.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Every football game you will see our cowbells come out and our spirit shown. After a dairy cow got loose and walked onto the football field, many years ago, we decided that our tradition would be the cowbell. If you go to a home game and do not see a cowbell, well, you are probably not at Mississippi State.

    Bang for the buck

Mississippi State is definitely worth the money you are paying. All of the teachers seem to enjoy what they are doing and even when a class has as many as 300 students they will find a way to help you out. Also, even if you are stuck in a dreadful dorm, the price will be much cheaper for the dormer then someone in a nicer dorm.

    What to do for fun

There are many opportunities to get involved on campus. One of the best ways to do so is intramurals. You join a team with the people that occupy your dorm and you are given the opportunity to show your skills against the opposing dorms on campus. If that is not what you are interested in then there are also groups such as music maker production, bronies, and scuba dawgs to occupy your time. Each are run by students and staff that are always welcoming and understanding.

    Food and Dining

Food on campus is of the best quality I have seen on a college university campus. It is always good and have many different choices with everyone in mind. If you perfer a home cooked meal, the Perry is the place for you. It reminds many people of a Logan's style buffet. If that is not what you like we also have Burger King, Chick-ful-a, Panda Express, and many more options.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life, I must admit, can be pretty dreadful at times. If you do not get a good dorm and are left to live in the retro grade dorm, then you will be pretty miserable. The rooms are to small. You do not have your own space and your roommate, if you are anything like me, will probably have ridiculous habits that annoy the life out of you.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are all a tad bit challenging but everyone needs a challenge now and then. The teachers are always ready to help if for some reason you fall behind or do not understand the material at hand.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure to map out your classes before the first day of school. It is a big campus and it is not hard to get lost at first. If at any point you do get lost just ask the nearest person around you and they will be more then happy to help you out. Also, living on campus as a freshmen makes everything so much easier. You get to make friends and there is no reason you can not make it to any of your classes.

    In three sentences

Mississippi State has a wonderful atmosphere with some of the nicest people you will ever meet. The teachers and other faculty, including janitors, always have a smile on their face and want to know what you have to say. This is a college where they really do want you to make the best of your future.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is a huge thing here. Since this is an open campus, the security is very tight. Only vehicles that have the Mississippi State resident sticker on them may park in the designated parking lots at any time. There are patrol men that monitor the parking lots all day long and especially at night. There are poles that have blue lights on them, if you feel that you are in danger, press the button on the pole and police should be to you within minutes. There is an on-campus police station. If you don't want to walk at night from one side of campus to the other, there are Bully Cars that have a security officer driving them and you call them and they come wherever you are and take you where you need to go.

There are a few interesting locations on campus. There are tunnels all around campus that are fun to find! If you go here, you know what I mean.

    Bang for the buck

Mississippi State University is a school that you need to set your money aside for. It is expensive, but you factor in the great housing (if you apply early enough), the wonderful food, and the terrific staff and administration, then it all comes out in the wash.

    What to do for fun

There is never a dull moment on campus! There is always someone's room to go to, a party going on, movie night on the Drill Field, gatherings in the Union; you will never be bored.

    Food and Dining

The Perry of Mississippi State is a wonderful place to eat! There are so many different options. There is Fried Chicken Wednesday and Catfish Friday. The workers there are so friendly. There is also the Student Union that has a Starbucks and a Chic-fil-a. Trust me, you will never be hungry.

    Dorm Life

Depending on which dorm you live in, you may or may not feel the comforts of home. Either way, there are always people that want to make friends with you so that you are not alone. The dorms feel very safe here, the doors lock behind you, and there is security patrolling the parking lots at night.

    Academic Rigor

The academics at Mississippi State are more difficult than high school, but they are not impossible. Some teachers make the same classes harder than others, you just have to talk to upperclassmen and make sure you get the right ones.

    Tips for prospective students

A few tips for prospective students: SLEEP, go to class, study (even when you think you don't have to), and make use of your student ID (it gets you food and you get into all sports events, free of charge)

The only thing around here is local club parties, frat house parties, house parties, the bars, and sport's games. Other than that, make friends and go out of town if you really just want something to do. It's a small town that doesn't have any main attractions.

    Food and Dining

The Perry has decent food. Of course, like any other school the dishes get repetitive. There are other places on campus to eat like Chik fil a, Burger King, Chick-fil-a and others. But, for students like myself that want to eat healthier, that's not really an option here.

    Dorm Life

For the cost of the dorms, it's not worth it. If anything, live off of campus. However, the social scene of the dorms is exciting your first year. Be careful when choosing room mates and don't bring too much because all of the dorm rooms are extremely small.

    Campus Safety

Campus is a very safe place located between Starkville and Colombus MS. The school has a centrally located campus PD and officers that constantly patrol the campus. On top of that, there is a 24 hour escort service known as the Bully Patrol that acts as student security guards. You can call at any time after hours and be picked up in their golf carts and escorted to your destination. The Bully Patrol and campus PD work together to protect from theft and break in's and personal violence. I feel very safe both on campus and in the city of Starkville.

    Greek Life

There are 31 fraternity and sorority chapters at MSU. Many of those each have their own house on campus which are beautiful and incomparable to other universities. Fraternities and sororities are constantly hosting events and parties that is available to the general student body. Each fraternity and sorority chapter is also deeply involved in charitable organizations and activities that bring the student body together.

    Clubs and Activities

MSU offers too many clubs and activities to even begin to name but I myself am apart of the MSU men's ultimate club, Formula SAE, Delta Gamma house boy, and a Cooperative Education student. There is a club for almost every sport or extreme activity like scuba diving, ultimate frisbee, rock climbing, cricket, soccer, rugby, lacross, hockey, and many more. There are academic clubs and clubs for each of the colleges such as Xipiter, EcoCar, Formula SAE, and Space Cowboys just to name a few in the College of Engineering alone. There is also homecoming court and student government and Greek fraternities and sororities. I could go on and on.

Great for these types of students

I think MSU has a lot to offer for a vast majority of students but I think MSU is a great fit for students who are serious about their education, enjoy being outdoors, are adventurous, outgoing, and just generally friendly people.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The only unusual tradition I know of is the ringing of the cowbell at sporting events. Every student and alumni has to have their own cowbell to bring to the games. You cannot purchase your own cowbell because that is bad luck.

    Bang for the buck

I think MSU offers a great, well rounded experience for the some of the lowest tuition prices in the nation. I feel like I have been able to participate in almost anything I can think of either free of charge or for very little expense to me. The academic reputation of the University is valuable to have on a resume and the career fair and student career center will help you prepare for a great career.

    What to do for fun

There is lots to do for fun around campus and in Starkville itself. Firstly, there is the multitude of SEC sporting events to attend throughout the year which are always loud and crazy and a lot of fun. MSU also hosts a variety of events for the general student body such as: entry week activities, intramural sports, Cowbell Yell pep rally, art shows in the Union, student fashion shows, dorm sponsored parties, dramatic plays and musicals, Lab Rats improv comedy shows, E-Week (for engineers), and much more. My personal favorites are Bulldawg Bash in the fall and Super Bulldawg Weekend in the Spring. These are weekend festivals for football and baseball where they shut down university street and hold concerts all day and local vendors come to sell their products. The campus also hosts a variety of concerts, I personally have gone to see Eli Young Band, Brantley Gilbert, Cage the Elephant and 2 Chains. Outside of Starkville there is the Noxubee Wildlife Refuge which is about a 15 minute drive out into the enormous beautiful wildlife refuge that you will instantly fall in love with.

    Food and Dining

The food is excellent. Not only do you get great choices of food but there are several different cafeterias across campus that you can visit for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The Perry is the main campus cafeteria and it is a beautiful and unique building that has all kinds of food to offer from salad to nacho buffets, American grill, country soul food specials, international specialties, gluten-free menu, a bakery, ice cream bar, and all day omelet chef. Aside from that the other cafeterias offer the same basic daily meal and a variety of other dishes. The Union was recently remodeled and full of good restaurants.

    Dorm Life

I lived in the dorm 1 year and the students and RA's were very friendly. I frequently visited a majority of the other dorms and the same goes for all of them. You will find a diverse group of students but most will be friendly and happy to hang out. That just goes to show a little about the student body as a whole. The dorm's also host frequent events like movie nights, ping pong tournaments, gaming tournaments, pizza parties, dance parties, group outings, and many more things.

    Academic Rigor

I believe MSU has an extensive and rigorous academic program. While not being considered as one of the toughest schools in the nation, they still provide a challenging experience that forces you to mature and learn as a student. MSU will provide you with a great skill set for the future through its course diversity and vast extracurricular club opportunities.

    Tips for prospective students

As a prospective student I would advise that you get familiar with the school by getting out and just walking around the beautiful campus as much as you can. There are too many clubs and extracurricular activities to not be involved with something. Branch out and make friends that you didn't go to high school with because you never know who you will meet and become unexpected best friends. Do not skip class! Professors are much more willing to help you out if they see you in class regularly.

    In three sentences

MSU is a big school full of small town people with a rich tradition in southern hospitality. MSU has a beautiful campus matched with an extensive educational experience and friendly, helpful advisers and staff. MSU brings pride to the state of Mississippi and will always be my home away from home.

    What to do for fun

I'm in a fraternity(volunteer organization), so I volunteer a lot. Also, I'm in a microbiology club. I hang with my friends. Sometimes we just need to get away from campus, so we go out to the mall and go out to eat. It's always fun to work out in the gym, which is a great stress reliever.

    Food and Dining

Food is great even though we have the same thing every week. You may get tired of having the same thing, but you could always leave campus and get something different.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life could be awful, or it could be awesome. It all just depends on who your roommate is. Sometimes it's best not to room up with your best friend because your friendship could possibly end. Single rooms are available if you don't like to be bothered with others, so that's something to consider.

    Academic Rigor

STUDY, STUDY, and STUDY. There will be some teachers who gives you notes that basically are the test, but for some you will have to read. Study even if you think you know because sometimes you may forget the simplest materials you went over in class.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved. There are several clubs that you can join. This could help you make more friends, meet people with the same major, and looks good on your resumé. Just stay on top of your work but life your life and have a little fun.

    In three sentences

Overall, Mississippi State is a great school(9.5). It is very diverse, and the atmosphere is out of this world. There's always something to do.

    Campus Safety

I always feel safe on campus. There are so many safety precautions. At night there are security walking around campus to check up on everything. If anyone does feel unsafe there is a program set up that can be called and someone will be sent to take you where you are going. I love State and I never feel unsafe.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria has pretty good food, and the Union has some okay stuff. I prefer a home cooked meal so I prefer the cafeteria. The hardest thing is figuring out who takes block meals and who doesn't. No one comes out and just says it, so you have to figure it out, but I guess that is part of being new on campus.

    Dorm Life

The dorms can be pretty loud and you can hear everything through the walls. However, there is usually always someone around to talk to or just hang out.

    Academic Rigor

I have challenges at State, but nothing the professors won't help you get through. Any time I have a problem I can go to my professors for help, that's such a great feeling. I am an engineer and I am so happy at State. I don't know that I could be this happy with my school choice anywhere else.

    Tips for prospective students

I suggest getting out the first week here. There is a huge fair on the drill and that will introduce you to all kinds of things on campus. Also, the professors here are always willing to help. I email my professors for help all the time and they are excellent about getting back to me.

    In three sentences

I am happy with my decision to come to Miss State. I have made so many friends and I am happy with my major. I would suggest any engineer to consider Miss State.

    What to do for fun

There is always some kind of activity going on around campus. There are plenty of athletic and intramural games to go watch and play in, symposiums, musical and theatrical performances, dorm activities, and school-wide activities. Plus all the social and professional organizations around campus are all very involved in community and campus life.

    Food and Dining

The bakery makes it's own baked goods and ice cream- fabulous! My husband and I got our groom's cake from the MSU bakery! The Union has a great variety of eateries to choose from and the Cafeteria has a wonderful buffet! There are several other little convenience stores around campus to buy snacks at too.

    Dorm Life

Although I never lived in the dorms, I had many friends that did. The newer dorms are very spacious with lots of study rooms, computer labs, snack bars, and social areas with TVs and gaming systems. There are always hall or dorm activities and contests to promote unity and involvement.

    Academic Rigor

Though the programs are not as intense as an ivy league school's may be, the faculty and staff are of a superior caliber and constantly challenge students to think independently.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved! There are many activities and groups for all interests. Whether it be sports, performing arts, religion, politics, cooking, sciences, education or something in between, there is a way for you to get involved and stay connected.

    In three sentences

Exceptional programs for Sciences and Arts. Lots of theatrical and musical involvement opportunities. Tons of available extracurricular groups.

    Campus Safety

Absolutely surprised by the safety of this campus. There have been almost no problems past a few tornadoes or bad rainstorms. I have walked around on campus completely by myself at midnight. The worst I encountered was a wild skunk, who promptly wanted nothing to do with me and we left one another be.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many student clubs that I could not list them all even if I wanted to. I am currently part of the Horseman's Association (great for equestrians) and the Pre-Vet Club. The clubs can really help you with networking and making friends as well.

Great for these types of students

    Agriculture, engineering, business, pre-veterinary

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is way cheaper than many other colleges even if you were getting in-state tuition for them.

    What to do for fun

When there isn't a football or other sports game, the best fun you can have is hanging out with friends. You can stay on campus and play frisbee, soccer, or whatever sport you prefer. You also have access to Sanderson, the gym on campus, and a couple tennis courts. There are multiple intramural sports teams available to students. Off campus, there are movie theaters, a bowling alley, and a few public parks.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria starts out really well at the beginning of the year and then slowly declines in quality of food. They have a good variety of food available though. Mississippi State University also has the Student Union, which contains: Chik-Fila, Pizza Hut, Panda Express, Starbucks, a small grocery store, a frozen yogurt place, and a salad place. There is also a few other small restaurants scattered around the campus, such as Burger King and Subway. Off campus, Starkville holds many restaurants that appeal to most people.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is no worse than you would expect it to be at college. I enjoyed it to an extent. The only thing I didn't like was not having my own personal bedroom. You can request that and pay double the amount if you shared, but I was able to survive that. For the most part, everyone minded their own business and making friends was rather easy.

    Academic Rigor

The intensity of the academic rigor at Mississippi State University varies between classes, between teachers, and even between students. For me, I only struggled in topics that I was never good at in the first place. Many of friends did very well in their classes though.

    Tips for prospective students

Make friends with the people who live on your floor or in your dorm. Don't be afraid to ask for help from the teachers, your lab partner, or the person sitting next to you in class if it's allowed. Don't pull all-nighters the night before the test. Always do your lab homework.

    In three sentences

Mississippi State University has a great campus and lots of friendly faces. There are many good teachers on the campus. Classes and labs are easy to find and do well in.
