Montclair State is an artsy school, a school that is well known for its arts. Montclair State's arts programs like music, acting, dance, musical theater, and painting are well known across the nation. Also, Montclair State has a well known teaching program, and has the nation's only doctorate program in pedagogy. Montclair State was originally founded in 1908 as a school to train, educate, and produce qualified teachers.

    Tips for prospective students

The search for the right college for you starts with knowing who you are as a person. Find out what you were created to do. What are your passions and desires? What is it that you do that gives you the most enjoyment? The answers to these questions will give you an idea of what you are called to. Look into whatever you answered to these questions and see if you can match it into a subject of study, a major , or a career goal. Once you have done this, start looking for colleges and universities that have these areas of study. Visit some of these campuses and see which one fits you best. Decide on a college, hopefully Montclair State University, and prepare for adjustments that will most likely have to be made if you are living on campus. You will most likely have a roommate, a meal plan, and will be sharing a bathroom. Try to get along with your roommate as best as possible, and make friends that have the same goals and interests as you. Choose friends that want to see you succeed, and help each other reach your goals. Last but not least, be safe have fun!

    Bang for the buck

Montclair State is very affordable, tuition, room and board, and fees adding up to about $20,678 per year. With these prices going up every year, Montclair State will always be more affordable than many other private instutions, since it is a public institution. Montclair State's office of financial aid will assist you in finding financial aid through scholarships, grants, and loans. They are extremely helpful to me when I have questions about financing my education.

    Am enjoying being here

Montclair State offers a variety of academic programs to support you in the pursuit of your career goals. I have made many friends in a program I am enrolled in, and making friends makes college life that much more enjoyable. There are also many clubs to get involved in. There is the Latin American Student Organization(LASO), the Carribean Student Organization(CaribSO), the Organization of Students for African Unity(OSAU), and many others. There are multiple Greek Life fraternities and sorroties you can become a member of. There are many spiritual organizations to join, according to your faith. For example, there is Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, which I am a member of, and the Muslim Student Organization. Make sure to get involved with clubs and activities.

    Am learning a lot

Montclair State University's student to faculty ratio is 17 to 1, and class size is not large. The environment is just right for learning, and it is put together for your academic success.

Great for these types of students

MSU is great for all kinds of students campus community is very diverse fun and beautiful. Many activities to do. I'll recommend this school to anyone who wants to have a future!!!

    Tips for prospective students

Well you would have probably heard a lot of things about Montclair( many terrible things) but I want to tell you otherwise MSU is one of the greatest public schools in the state and country at large. It is very affordable, environment is very conducive, students are active friendly and intelligent, staff are resourceful and helpful even though there maybe some exceptions, food is OK, plenty activities to do a lot of clubs and organizations, financial aid and scholarships are available, on campus jobs are available and they even bend it around your schedule, there is also a train station on campus that takes you to NY. People MSU is really a great school I believe you should come and see for yourself. Just get good grades in High school, get involved in as many extra curricula activities as you can and also apply early.

    Bang for the buck

Affordable!!! I believe that what we are paying for we are even getting more the type of education being received at MSU I can say is quite similar to the ivies...the only difference is that it is cheaper!!!

    Am enjoying being here

O yeah before I came to this school I didn't like it because of all that I heard but later on I found out they were just lies ..... I enjoy most of the time here even though some days don't just go as wished or planed. My time so far in MSU is worthwile.

    Academic Rigor

Montclair has a lot of Majors and programs!!! And you will also learn from the people you meet. there are a lot of facilities and resources available on campus. Research is also on the rise at this institution.

    ALL STUDENTS. NO MATTER WHAT.

    Tips for prospective students

You will do the best you can.

    Bang for the buck

Montclair is a great choice for its price. I am a commuter and my tuition is only about $13,000; now if you board it'll be about 20,000. You get many priviliges and have so many choices of programs and entertainment to participate in from C.S.I . Sounds cool? Well it is. Come join and find out!!

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is comfortable and easy to get around in. Shuttle buses are FREE and come about every 5 mins. The student center is most likely where you will spend most of your days. Here you will find cafeterias, printing labs, computer rooms, the place for financial aid help, ID's, or even the school store filled with books and souvenirs to take home or wear! They even have fooseball!

    Am learning a lot

Each one of my courses has its own challenges and keeps me on my feet. Class size arent huge at all and you can have one on one discussions with the professor during their office hours. It is a great learning institution and your professors will showcase that.

Montclair State is a great environment to learn and be challenged by the professors. If you are looking for a quaint and smaller campus, Montclair is the right school for you. The classes are small which help student to make friends.

    Campus Safety

You can ask for a security escort to walk you to where you want to go in the evening. It is an open campus so it could be tricky. Thankfully, we haven't experienced any dangerous situations in the past four years.

    Clubs and Activities

We have over 140 clubs alone. And probably hundreds of activities to become involved in. There's an activity for everything.

Great for these types of students

Vibrant students who just want to ... do stuff would be amazing here.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

It's hard to say what is unusual if I haven't attended another college. But everyone knows and loves the space behind the Rec Center where you can see the NYC skyline, which is gorgeous at night. Construction is a constant at MSU, so always expect that!

    Bang for the buck

Again, college is what you make of it. I'd say ... yes!

    What to do for fun

Go to the Rec Center to work out. Be near the Student Center for cool events and free stuff. Hop on a shuttle to Clifton Commons for some good food and shopping. Go to class (seriously!).

    Food and Dining

Not too bad, not the best thing in the world. Interesting system of paying for food. But hey, can't get enough of the sushi!

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is pretty great! I've lived on campus all four years, the first three in Freeman Hall and the last year in the Upper Heights. Being on campus all the time really is convenient when you want to be involved. It's a great way to maintain friendships, too. The quality of the dorms have improved, and as long as you take care of your side of the room, you can't complain all that much.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on the course and professor, the classes can either be super simple or highly challenging. You'll get to know which professors expect more. But don't believe everything on those professor rating sites. Figure out where you stand and choose your classes wisely.

    Tips for prospective students

Go in with a positive attitude and always listen! There are so many things happening everyday that you do not want to miss, including things that might impact your entire life. Don't always take the easy teachers, challenge yourself because when you've gone through a tough course, at least you can say you made it out alive. Go to professors' office hours. They can put a face to a name and you'll be a step closer to getting that A.

    In three sentences

I think like any experience, a college education is what you make of it. Montclair State has a surplus of resources to take advantage of and can truly be the college you are proud of. I have had the opportunities to be an active member and leader in on-campus organizations, be a part and establish research project, take part in volunteer work (both off campus and on), study abroad, and redefine myself.

Great for these types of students

Any student that is interested in music or theater should consider Montclair State University. Our music and theater programs are rising fast and are becoming very popular.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not be afraid to go for extra help. Montclair offers tutoring for a variety of classes and enough tutors to be able to assist the students needing help. Also the Professors are all required to have office hours where the students can go for extra help. Remember people are not going to ask how much help you had to get your BMW they are just going to know you have it.

    Bang for the buck

Since Montclair State University is a state university it is not that expensive for me. It is very true about what is said about the educational services here, numerous amounts of people have told me that people graduating from Montclair State University come out being just as well off as people from well known institutes if not better.

    Am enjoying being here

For me being here is a lot of fun. The people here are all very nice and it is very easy to make friends. There is always something to do on campus like go to free theater performances that the school puts on or going to a sporting event. There are also numerous clubs and geek life that puts on events for the students to attend like dances.

    Am learning a lot

The Professors at Montclair State University are all very well educated. They are very understanding and are available during their office hours to help students out. I have no trouble following my teachers during their lectures and they give me a wealth of information that is easy to remember.

    Tips for prospective students

    APPLY EARLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Bang for the buck

When I applied I was hopeing to be part of the Musical Theatre school but I was declined. But I'm glad to be going to Montclair and even more ecstatic that I'm actually going to college but If I was going for theatre my first year, Montclair would be worth more bang for its buck but it is a good school, cost wise as well as education.

    Will enjoy being here

I hope its everything I dreamed of in college. I've been planning on going to college my whole life for performing arts and now the time has finally come when I get to start my career

    Will learn a lot

I have yet to actually start as a freshman but I am anxiously awaiting to become a red hawk! My brother went here and enjoyed everything about the school so I naturally can't wait!

Great for these types of students

Every type of student is great for Montclair. Each housing facility offers unique characteristics that attract certain types of students. Surveys are filled out to ensure that you are matched with the right type of housing fit for your academic and social needs. In addition, the campus organizations are so diverse that anyone could find the perfect fit to grow academically while meeting new people.

    Tips for prospective students

Bring your own car and expect to arrive early in order to get a decent spot for parking. Also, shuttle buses take a while so make sure you are ahead of schedule in order to avoid arriving to class late.

    Bang for the buck

MSU is relatively inexpensive compared to other New Jersey state public schools, however certain aspects could be improved for tuition being paid such as campus parking and shuttle transportation. Nevertheless, MSU is the ideal school for getting involved with the student population. Meal options are decent and most are 24 hours so even the oddest hour cravings are fulfilled. In addition, the activities and events are phenomenal, not to mention they occur frequently and most of the time are free!

    Am enjoying being here

I am thrilled to be living on campus and a vital part to the school community. I was disappointed in the train not running on the weekend but for that blemish, Montclair makes up for it in other transportation services as well as a plethora of campus events and activities throughout the week and weekend. There is not a lack of clubs or organizations at Montclair. Anything under the sun including greek organizations exist and are a prominent part of the school community. Also, the student population is diverse so I get to interact with many different people whom I would not normally have had a chance to associate with. Overall, MSU is great for getting involved in college.

    Am learning a lot

Montclair State University is diverse in the broad spectrum of courses and majors offered. My current curriculum is excellent in teaching me current information and practices as well as incorporate new technologies. My professors have detailed educational backgrounds on the courses that they teach so I always get the best source of information. Not only are they reputable for their work, but also reliable by making themselves available to the students for their convenience. Classroom instruction is top notch because most of my professors initiate student interaction and teach using several different methods to ensure students are learning efficiently.

The campus is safe. Robberies and other crimes rarely happen. Two police stations are accessible on the MSU campus as well as squad cars pro-trolling regularly.

I hang out with my roommates for fun. I am in an eight person suite, which gave me lots of opportunities to meet people.

    Food and Dining

    Dorm Life

Although students do dorm at MSU, it is mostly a commuter school. There are not too many activities on the weekends, although if you make an effort to have fun it is possible.

    Clubs and Activities

Public Health Club! Psychology Club! Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Society!

    Bang for the buck

With a great name and a lower price tag than most New Jersey schools, Montclair has upped its' game in the past years by getting new dorms and building onto the campus .

    What to do for fun

There are countless clubs and organizations that people can join so that they stay busy during the week and on weekends! If people want to get off-campus, there are Transit buses that can take you to downtown Montclair, or to the mall, or even the movies! All for only $3.00 roundtrip!

    Tips for prospective students

Montclair State University, or MSU, is a school for people who want to learn new things and meet all different sorts of people. Because of the long list of majors that MSU has to offer, it would not be uncommon to be best friends with a theatre major and a nutrition major! If you are looking for a school that will make you feel at home and challenge you academically in your field of study, then Montclair State University is the perfect school for you.

    In three sentences

From my one year at Montclair State University, I can safely say that we are definitely not lacking in diversity, great professors, and great experiences. With so much to do and get involved in, Montclair State University has made me feel at home with all of the wonderful students and professors.

Police on campus so you always feel safe! Campus is not too big and people have said that the feel safe living there.

    Greek Life

Not too sure what this one means....

    Clubs and Activities

Too many to name honestly...You have your sports clubs, sororities, language clubs, art clubs, probably some music clubs thrown in there.

Great for these types of students

Students who love art, or anything art related. I am going. for Graphic Design, but I feel that Montclair offers a variety of different majors to suite anyone's needs.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Nothing to unusual that I have experienced. I have heard of certain special days that they have on campus, and there are always a number of events going on.

    Bang for the buck

A little expensive for me personally, but compared to the colleges I applied for it is cheaper and way worth it, especially if you are living on campus.

    What to do for fun

Eat at the many available places on campus. Travel to New York for the day by train. Participate in some of Red Hawk events that are hosted during the week. Enjoy the luxurious computer lab. Play sports, or run around on the track. Hit the pool for a bit on those hot days, and so much more.

    Food and Dining

So many places to eat. You will not go hungry.....ever.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are nice. Some areas are nicer than other, so it depends on what you get wen you start. I have no experience living with any one on campus yet, but from what I have heard, it is not that bad. You hardly use your room if you keep busy.

    Academic Rigor

    Campus Safety

I love that every time there are certain events that take place here, the police and even President Cole will stop at nothing to try to make the university more safe for the students and make them feel more comfortable. MSU supports diversity and I feel that diversity is the key element to a safer campus.

    Greek Life

If you want to join a sorority/fraternity, you will have the time of your life but make sure you have the time and commitment into joining.

    Clubs and Activities

There are tons of clubs and activities to choose from. All of these clubs will keep you busy and always will help you have the time of your life. I love L.A.S.O (Latin American Student Organization), I.S.O (International Student Organization) and U.A.A.S.O (Unified Asian American Student Organization). I really recommend that you check them out. They always have TONS of fun events and food.

Great for these types of students

This institution is for music, theater, education, and psychology majors. It is not for nutrition majors. It is very hard for nutrition majors here to get certain classes.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Behind Morehead hall is a path that leads to LOTS of stairs. Those stairs are a pain to go up and down from. When you see those stairs, you will be disturbed.

    Bang for the buck

The tuition raised and I am not liking it. It is cheaper if you are a commuter. I do appreciate that it is not as expensive as other institutions but books are so expensive. I recommend renting the books or even buying them and selling them back. All I can say, apply for scholarship and/or find a job. This will all help you pay for school and even put extra money in your pocket.

    What to do for fun

You can hang with your friends and sing karaoke, stay in your room and decorate and/or go out to different events on campus. Definitely go to the events! There are ALWAYS good prizes like an Ipad, Xbox 360, DVD player, Screen TV, etc (just to name a few).

    Food and Dining

It is okay. I admire that I get to try something new like sushi, Mexican and even other types of food from extracurricular clubs. I'm telling you freshman, get the constant pass. You will not regret it. You can get in Freeman and Sam's Place (buffet places) for FREE! Despite this, sooner or later, you wouldn't want to eat the food there anymore. You would want something different. So I would advise you to save your flex dollars. Don't spend it all at once. It happens, trust me! Flex dollars can be used in other places and you will always have your hands on different foods. Also, be aware of the events! Most of the time, there are FREE FOOD.

    Dorm Life

I believe dorm life is the best decision for an incoming freshman. I feel once you dorm here, you will know the entire campus in less than 3 days.

    Academic Rigor

The course materials are very challenging. I'm sure you heard of the saying Studying is the key to success. It is! Find some way to time manage and study at least 10-15 hours a week (If not more). Trust me once you study, you will see results.

    Tips for prospective students

Always go to ratemyprofessors.com. Trust me, it is always important to have a background check of your teachers. Not every teacher will teach in a way you would like. Every teacher is different. Also, when you study, find a quiet area. It is really easy to be distracted on campus. There are ALWAYS different events happening each day.

    In three sentences

Montclair State University (MSU) is a excellent institution for music, theater, education, and psychology majors. You will always find something to do at this MSU. Also, the campus is definitely appealing to the eyes.

    Campus Safety

The campus has their own police force and separate station on the site. I feel very safe here, even walking alone at night.

    Greek Life

The greek life is very developed, there are many active sororities and fraternities on campus.

    Clubs and Activities

The list of clubs here at Montclair State is quite extensive and varied! From academic clubs to a dance team to a gamers' club, there will be an organization for you!

Great for these types of students

    Performing Arts and Education majors.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

We have our very own Guy Fieri restaurant on campus that just opened in the fall of 2012, Guy himself even came to sign autographs!

    Bang for the buck

As an out-of-state student, I find the tuition to be a bit pricy for a public institution. However, if you live in New Jersey, it is very reasonable price-wise.

    What to do for fun

There are many different student organizations to get involved in at MSU. As for specific activities, the events calendar is always full with activities ranging from movie nights to paintball trips to our own Price is Right game show night complete with prizes! MSU loves giving away free stuff!

    Food and Dining

The dining halls serve good food with some healthy options. There are also many different food locations around campus, even Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks! You will definitely be able to find what you're looking for.

    Dorm Life

Most of the dorms here are quite new and are extremely nice to live in. I've enjoyed living in Sinatra Hall, it's like a hotel!

    Academic Rigor

The academics here at Montclair State are much like any other school, it all depends on the professor you have. Some classes are lacking academically and others that enrich my knowledge greatly.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are planning on entering the theatre department, be vigorous in your contact with the faculty, they tend to be difficult to get in touch with via email.

    In three sentences

Montclair State University is in a great location, both on campus and its close proximity to New York City. This school has a very active student body with many events happening on campus daily. The Greek life can be a bit suffocating at times, as it is very sorority and fraternity heavy.

Montclair is a great school that stresses academic performance while also having fun. They have carnivals on campus, world fair where you get free foods and drinks from an array of large companies. They also have themed parties and large concerts! Last year or so they had a Jason Derulo concert on campus! They turn a parking lot into a club and bring famous performers or well known DJs!

It's worth your money especially if you utilize everything offered to you. There are so many great things offered to the student body and if you utilize them then you are getting your moneys worth and more. There is a helpful writing center where you can get help with writing your essays, research papers, etc. There is a gym, so forgo the gym membership at gyms else where. There is a library for study areas and obviously renting books. Dorm Life

!I do not know much about dorm life because I commute but from what i hear it is pretty good. From what I hear, make sure your room mate is a good room mate. I've heard terrible things about getting stuck with a bad room mate!

    Academic Rigor

The academics is extremely well just make sure you ask around about professors because some professors are more difficult to understand than other. Some are better at conveying lessons than others.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are going to commute to campus I suggest you arrive at least 20min before your class is scheduled to begin because parking can be difficult. If you have morning classes you'll be able to find parking easily before 9AM after 9AM it may become difficult or you may have to park on the top levels of the garage.

    In three sentences

Montclair State University has a beautiful and welcoming campus. Most professors are a great help and are willing to guide you when you're unsure of things. Montclair State University is over all a great school!

    Campus Safety

There is always someone who can talk to you about problems, the campus is a 'dry' campus, and there is always campus police around. When at Montclair State University, individuals will feel safe and as if they are at home.

Great for these types of students

Artistic, liberal, relaxed, intellectual, creative, willing to try new things.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

It used to be just the Greek life but now all clubs paint rocks to show off their style!

    Bang for the buck

Montclair State University offers tons of financial aid and scholarship - the food plan is great, but like all other colleges, the bookstore is a tad expensive.

    What to do for fun

There's always cheap concerts and programs going on campus! It's only a fourteen minute trip to New York City with an NJ Transit station access-able. There is also a lot of classes held within the gym (I'm most excited for aqua zumba!).

    Food and Dining

There is ALWAYS (and I stress ALWAYS) food available on campus - there's even a famous chef whom visits campus! There's always little food trucks selling some falafel or cheese steaks, it is all delicious.

    Dorm Life

Despite being in 'typical freshmen dorming' the rooms all have wifi and high speed internet. The dorms are much nicer and more spacious than other colleges.

    Academic Rigor

Montclair has a huge range of academics and the professors are extremely knowledgable. Also, to keep costs lower, individuals can transfer up to sixty credits.

    Tips for prospective students

Definitely check out the clubs, the gym, and the dorms! Plus there's always a place to eat (no matter what time it is!) which is a major plus.

    Campus Safety

Campus is relatively safe. There have been a few incidents, however, most of them occurring at night time. They are very petty, usually a small-scale confrontation or theft.

    Greek Life

The Greek life is vibrant and very much alive. Greeks can be seen all over campus with their letters, apparel, and insignia. Definitely a good way to make friends and excellent for networking. Hazing is strictly prohibited!

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs to be a part of so look around.

    Bang for the buck

Attending this school is worth it because at the end of the day, one is getting an education and trying to get a degree. There should be more recreational options, however.

    What to do for fun

Workout at the gym, hang out in friend's dorms and around campus, go to parties at local clubs and attend events.

    Food and Dining

Food needs more variety; there should be more international food that attempts to cater to various cultures. Eventually, one will get tired of sandwiches and fries and soda. The food is very expensive. $2.55 for a cream cheese bagel. Meal plans are required for students that choose to live on campus.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are everywhere on campus with many residents. Many simply hang out in their dorms and watch TV or just socialize. Others may go to lobby areas and play pool table or even eat together. Students are always awake at night, either studying or being with friends. Dorms are comfortable, yet can be very expensive.

    Academic Rigor

School is definitely academically challenging. Many professors are of foreign origin, which may give some students difficulty understanding the subject. Assignments are due and expected by due date and missing one class can surely have you falling behind very fast. Always attend class and put your best foot forward.

    Tips for prospective students

Learn about time management and prioritizing. Study and work very hard because it will only pay off in the end. Enroll in summer and winter courses to complete degree faster. Establish friendships and don't burn bridges because you will find that a lot of these new friends will play an important role in your college career. Don't skip class and study, study, study!

    In three sentences

A credible four-year institution offering some of the best academic programs in the state. Medium-sized campus with a limited college party-vibe. Great school for your resume as well as making life-long friendships.

MSU has an extensive range of different clubs and campus activities going on all year long. There is never time for boredom.

    Academic Rigor

MSU encourages each of their students to always keep their studies in mind, most commonly by reinforcing the importance of education as apart of MSU life, with extracurriculars and other activities as bonus.

    Tips for prospective students

Be sure to know what you want. MSU definitely helps students along the way but it also really prides itself on being able to have their students learn to take initiative. Be accepting, be confident, and be eager to learn.

    In three sentences

Montclair State University has one of the loveliest campuses I have every visited, and some of the friendliest and most welcoming individuals I hoped to meet in my college experience. MSU offers a chance not only to further your own education, but also to form a life-long bond with each student and faculty/staff that you meet while there. I made the right choice.

    Campus Safety

I dorm on campus and I've never had a problem or any safety issue. There are always cops around and even the fire department is always around. There's also an EMT car always on campus on case something happens.

    Greek Life

Montclair is an open campus for greek life. It has different sororities and fraternities and they are among the most important and largest organizations on campus. They make different events that are open for the whole student community. Don't be afraid to ask around if you are interested on joining a greek org, it is a life changing experience.

    Clubs and Activities

There's a vast list of clubs and activities at montclair (look on their website). There are cultural organizations, sport organizations, gamers, religious, academics and many others. You should at least become member of one organization and be active! College is not just about going to class, you would be surprise of all the things you can experience and learn outside the classroom and that is in the organizations.

There's burgers, pizza, pastas, tacos, breakfast, stakes, chinese, japanese and many others. There's a diner on campus that opens 24/7 and is a good choice when you are hungry at night.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is excellent!! There are different types of dorms, each one with its own characteristics and rules. From dorms that only includes rooms, or rooms and bathrooms to complete apartments. Each dorm provides events throught the year that are free for students. Also make sure you know your CA which is the student in charge of your dorm. He/she is the person you want to talk to in case you have any concerns or problems with your dorm or even your roommates. The university also offers a program to make dormlife easier, wich includes counceling and helps with roommates issues.

    Academic Rigor

I would say the professor and classes are hard and challenging, but not impossible. College after is about thinkin, developing new skills and discovering our own potential. So don't be scared with a difficult class, work hard and do your best, but also look for help around campus, like tutorials or just asking your professor. Im sure they'll be willing to help.

    Tips for prospective students

Visit the campus before applying. Make sure they offer what you are looking for, walk around campus, look for they services they have and if you are looking for a dorm you should visit them too. Take with you a list of your main priorities and concerns and feel free to ask around campus and visit main offices like admissions, financial aid and students account. Have an agenda with deadlines and important dates to remember and remeber to apply on time. And please, dont be shy to look for organizations. Like I said there's something for everyone! Great for these types of students

Commuters, returning adults, shy or not to social students and students that enjoy a small size classroom

    Tips for prospective students

If your looking for a college for commuting its a great chose. Other than that its best for college students that enjoy going home on the weekends or doing other things off campus on the weekend because the school is small in population and doesn't have a very big social scene on the weekends. Best option for returning adults and commuter students.

    Bang for the buck

Although the environment is very well comfortable and nice its basically what your paying for because the continuos construction of the college had drastically increased to tuition. As a biology major it would be nicer to see the college using more money towards improving things such as lab supplies and etc.

    Am enjoying being here

Even though I enjoy being a college student my financial circumstances and lack of help my staff such as academic advisors and professors has truly hindered my ability to enjoy the college.

    Am learning a lot

I am currently an biology major at MSU that enjoys being a part of a fairly small college. I have learned so much within my past two years at MSU which I didn't expect from a state college.

    Tips for prospective students

Know what you want to major in immediately. DO NOT switch majors or be undeclared, they put you through torture.

    Bang for the buck

It's a state university so it's not the most expensive place out there, but it depends on how much aid you get. Some people get grants and are enrolled in the EOF program where they get a lot of help. However, if you're like me and get nothing and have to take out loans, it's very expensive and hard, but like I said before I really like it here so it's worth it.

    Am enjoying being here

It's the only reason I am staying here. I get no financial aid and I transferred from a college where I got financial aid, but I wasn't enjoying myself. When I transferred here I loved it, the atmosphere is so different from my previous college. There's always events going on here, the people are friendly, I just love it here.

    Am learning a lot

For gen-ed classes there is a lot of variety, I have taken some interesting classes and learned a lot of things. There are the occasional duds that you are required to take and then depending on your major, you have to worry about whether your class is even available for the semester. Other than that I can't complain.

I am only going to this school because it has my graduate program (which is not a common program) and it is driving distance from home, making it an option to go home on weekends. Other than that, I do not like many things about this school. Dorm Life

It gets kind of lonely on the weekends, but that's when you use the shuttle service to Clifton Commons or take a day trip to NYC!

    Academic Rigor

I am part of the Honors College at MSU and the first few honors classes are pretty literature heavy, so get ready for that. They get easier as you get used to the work load and create a shedule for yourself.

    In three sentences

Montclair has a beautiful campus, which is constantly growing and improving. There are always events going on through CSI (center for student involvement) and the Rec Center. As the university grows, it seems less equipped to handle its debt and embarks it more and more on its students. The members of Montclair State are generally kind, warm-hearted people. Unfortunately, if it were not for the current economic climate, Montclair State would have less students since it is the best option of a bad situation.

Overall the food and dining on campus is pretty good. There is a pizza place, a sushi place, and even a diner. Then you have a few small shops, two dining halls, and a cafeteria. Maybe not the healthiest in the world but definitely could be worse.

    Dorm Life

Unfortunately I do not dorm so I cannot provide much feedback. Freshman get stuck in Bohn Hall which is huge and and older building so they are not the nicest dorms. There are the Heights which are new dorms for upperclassman. There are also off campus villas which are for upperclassman as well.

    Academic Rigor

Certain professor require more time spent on work than others. Make sure you look into every professor for the classes you want to take because every class is different. The demand in one class might not be the same in another.

    Campus Safety

campus is pretty safe on it's own. We are up on a mountain so no one really comes up to bother us. We do have police presence on campus and they are always protroling. We also have a safety gardian application (you can download or it is a text system for non-smart phones) The way it works is lets say you are leaving the library late at night, you set the timer to seven minuets (the average time it takes to get anywhere on campus) you hit start and walk back to your dorm. When you get to your dorm you turn off the timer, however if seven mins. are up and you do not hit the off button they will send a police car to find you (through GPS). Overall we are a very safe campus as long as you are smart.

    Greek Life

Greek life is very prevalent on campus although we do not have houses on campus. The greeks are always running some sort of activity or program on our campus, they do help to provided for the school community. Again it is what you make of it. Many people are involved in Greek life, but many are also not so there is no real pressure to join unless you want to.

    Clubs and Activities

MSU has so many different clubs and activities that are offered, we have numerous intermeral sports, and there is always a club to join. We have a variety of cultural and religious clubs, Newman catholic, Hillel,MSA, Web of Life, and several other. We have Indian culture club,LASO,Russian club,Haitian Club, ect. We also have a history club, Japan club, Gamers, Fencing club, Bio club, Fashion club, Pep band, psychology club, Community service. If you are interested in something MSU has it for you, and if not you are able to create your own club !

Great for these types of students

-MSU is known for the Education program (25th in the country and 10th for their doctorate program) It is extremely competitive. - We are also known for our theatre department. -we are also known for our school of business If you are an artsy person or a lover of the arts of any kind then MSU is the place for you ! But we are not a hippie school I promise ! Also if you are looking to go into education you will fit right in ! MSU is really right for anyone we have such a diverse student body there is room and acceptance for everyone.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

We have an amphitheater on campus, along with a diner. We have worlds fair day where all of the clubs come together and put up booths to share food of their cultures. I am sure we have more I just cannot think of any.

    Bang for the buck

Montclair is on the cheaper side of public schools in NJ. The heights because they are new are very expensive so don't feel pressure to live there if you want to save money. You pay for what you get so make the most of it !

    What to do for fun

What we do for fun at MSU is get involved ! there are over a hundred different clubs from the Players theatre company, to Japan club. There is always something to do at MSU. As a student you are emailed on friday in the loop which tells you of all of the events for that week. You could also walk into montclair and see a show in the movie theatre or eat off campus.

    Food and Dining

MSU currently has two residential dinning halls and one in the student center. We also have a pizza place,a sushi bar, the Red Hawk diner, Einstein bagels, and Cafe Diem. We also have a convenient store. Sam's place is the new dinning hall in the Heights and the quality of food is amazing. In Sam's there are different stations, vegetarian/vegan,grill, Italian style food, sandwich bar,and cultural food..

    Dorm Life

MSU is trying to improve the quality of dorm life. They have just completed The Heights, a new complex housing over 2,000 students in both single and double style rooms. It is am an amazing building to live in. They always have something to do over the weekends and there is a shuttle that you take to go into town on the weekends. Although there is still room for improvement MSU is rising to the occasion.

    Academic Rigor

Academics by far are MSU's strong point, I am going to be a junior next semester and I have yet to be in a lecture hall. Even freshmen classes such as writing 105/106(commonly know as expos) there were only 20 students in my class. Most professors are experience and willing to help you in any way that they can.

    Tips for prospective students

-don't be afraid to live on campus ! although we have a reputation for being a commuter school, they are trying very hard to change this image with things to do every weekend ! -LIVE IN BOHN. The only freshmen dorm on campus I promise it is worth the experience. - go see your advisers, you will have at least two your freshmen year go see them. -Don't be afraid to stay on campus on the weekends, that is how you make your friends. -MSU is what you make of it, it is the best of both worlds you can have a small family community school or a large no one knows you environment. it all depends on what you want - get involved ! MSU has something for everyone

    In three sentences

the quality of education is superior by far compared to other schools. There is always an adviser who is willing and able to help you when you need it most. MSU is best known for it's theatre, education and business programs.

    Campus Safety

There is a police station right on campus. There is also a volunteer squad and they can always be seen riding around patrolling the campus. If you are walking late at night from the library to your dorm you can call a number from the location you are leaving and leave a message saying I am leaving so and so area and expect to get to my destination in x amount of minutes. If you don't call the number back in x amount of minutes then campus police start looking for you to make sure nothing happened. Cool huh

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs and activities that go on. There are special field trips for just students. The only thing is these are announced via flyers on walls or by email and not many students get to see the flyers let alone check their email so many of these opportunities are missed.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is this area in the middle of campus where it's this square area surrounded by a few steps on each side. There is usually something going on in this area, from kids playing soccer to having relay races and barbecues.

    Bang for the buck

Any college is going to be pretty expensive. Financial aid pays for most of my tuition and the rest I pay with loans. However over all I think it is very worth it.

    What to do for fun

There are always events going on in Montclair. You can sign up for email alerts and every week you get a list of all the events that are going on from Monday through Saturday. They give away free food at least once a week so that you could stay and listen to live literature or people playing instruments.

    Food and Dining

The food in the dining halls are alright. They are kind of fattening but you also have other choices. However there is also a diner and many coffee shops and they have a number of tasty dishes to pick from.

    Dorm Life

If you are social, you will have a good time living on campus. Every one here is so friendly and they all look for fun things to do when not worrying about their classes. However if you are not social and have problems talking to new people, then housing is not for you. I like living on campus because everything is there for you. I can wake up 10 minutes before class and still get there on time.

    Academic Rigor

Just know that MSU is not like high school. You will not be able to pull off all nighters and read 5 chapters in just one night and expect to get a B. Basically just review every day and go to class. I do not think the classes here are too hard, you just have to do the work.

    Tips for prospective students

Makes sure to talk to your counselors and make a four year plan of all the classes that you have to take. Also, in the first week of classes, make sure to ask your professor what kind of exams he gives, is it multiple choice is it short answer, is it critical thinking. In college what matters is for you to pass the three exams that they give every semester.

    In three sentences

Montclair State University is a University that provides its students with basically everything they need. There is housing available and a number of places to get a quick snack late at night after hours of studying. Their library is open 24/5 and there is always a quiet place to cozy up to a book or study for finals.

There are many types of fraternities and sororities for students to choose from. There is a week were all these groups try to extend a hand to other people to join. They also have many signs around campus.

    Clubs and Activities

There are clubs and activities for everyone in Montclair. A student just needs to widen their eyes and see the possibilities that these clubs offer. And when i say widen their eyes, look out for emails and signs.

Great for these types of students

It doesn't matter what type of student you are. If you live on campus or if your a commuter, a student should try to get involved with their school. I say this because a student gets more for what they pay for, meet new people and it will look good on a resume.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

An unusual location is the quad by the student center. Here is where many students play music, recite their poems, hold rallies and do other activities.

    Bang for the buck

Montclair has a lot to offer. They have an amazing gym that over looks the New York City skyline and many concerts that are free for students to attend.

    What to do for fun

Montclair University holds a lot of activities for students to attend. They hold concerts and comedy shows. They also have many clubs for students to choose from.

    Food and Dining

Food is over priced, but what college isn't. My friends and I tend to get sushi that is made fresh on campus.

    Dorm Life

I live in the Village (on-campus apartments). Its very nice because not a lot of people are loud. It seems as though a lot of people who live here are done with the partying stage in their life.

    Academic Rigor

I am a Communication Major and the course work is difficult. However, over time it is something one gets used to. Once a student declares a major, they will start to see familiar faces in their classes.

    Tips for prospective students

Tips for Montclair students: Do not procrastinate, Check your email before class, Have a planner, Join clubs, Always email advisor, Don't always listen to advisor(ask multiple people for advice), Declare major as fast as you can.

    In three sentences

Montclair State University is an expanding university for upcoming students who are in Education, Communication and much more. The university has amazing clubs and activities for everyone. Each year they hold a concert and comedy show of our choice.

    Food and Dining

I do not like the food here. I mean it's not horrible it's just not me. Im a healthy eater and finding something healthy is pretty hard. they do brew starbucks at the cafe which is AMAZING to me because I love their coffee

    Dorm Life

I don't dorm but I hear it's ok here. I don't have much knowledge to speak in regards to this topic

    Academic Rigor

It's not so bad here it's definitely not worthy of 5 stars but 3 pretty much covers it. Rate my professor is going to be your best friend. If the professor stinks you're in for it!

    Tips for prospective students

There are police stationed around campus at all times.

    Clubs and Activities

Very active Greek Life, SGA, and performing opportunities (play, dance, opera, choir, band...)

    Bang for the buck

For a state school, Montclair is a great university with some usual political issues that every university faces.

    What to do for fun

New York City is 30 minutes away by car and about 45min-hour by public transportation. There are a lot campus activities throughout the day and night to keep commuters and residents happy.

    Food and Dining

There are a few places on campus to get food. The dining halls in the dorms are definitely not a first choice when wanting to get food but it is not absolutely horrid. Cafe Diem and Einstein's Bagels are two little cafes on campus and actually serve really good food if you don't mind shelling out a few extra dollars. The Student Center has a little convenience store, a dining room that serves very good food but also a little expensive, and the main cafeteria with various choices of food. Overall, the campus has food to eat and some places are better than others but I've had worse college food in other universities.

    Dorm Life

The dorms on campus aren't the best around. The Village which is the off-campus apartments given to upperclassmen are actually quite nice.

    Academic Rigor

I believe some classes are more rigorous at this university compared to others. However, with most of experience there is always someone to help you whether it is the professor or tutor.

    Tips for prospective students

Visit the campus yourself to see if you like the environment. Also, set up a tour with a student of your prospective major to get a feel for the department. You can't get a real feel for the campus through the group tours given.

    In three sentences

A very close-knit community of students and faculty. Many opportunities given to students on campus, in the community, and abroad. It is a beautiful campus.

    Campus Safety

I don't feel unsafe walking on campus at night, but after some hate crimes were committed this year, things definitely got scary. Google it, what happened was horrible. But I was really proud of the way we (the students) handled it. We had a rally and I know that my friends and I would walk our gay friends to class just to make sure everything was okay.

    Greek Life

I'm not in one of the SGA approved sororities, but I am in Sigma Alpha Iota, which is a fabulous female-fraternity for music lovers and musician. So I love it.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a ton of clubs, there's one for everything. If there isn't, it's super-easy to start one, and there are always people who will support you and join.

Great for these types of students

Music majors, people from New Jersey, people who want to experience diversity,

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There's a late-night bistro in the Heights that sells cheese fries and other fattening treats all night long. Also, the Red Hawk diner is opened all night, and Café Diem.

    Bang for the buck

I feel you really get a lot for your money here. The professors I've had have all been fabulous. The dorms are super big and really nice. The food is pretty edible, which is rare for college campuses. And the school itself is pretty affordable.

    What to do for fun

Well, besides Barstool getting shut down, there are definitely things to do off campus. The campus is pretty dead on weekends, but there's the Wellmont in town and NYC is so close. It's like 2.50 to get into the city by bus. And the Willowbrook mall is just a bus ride away. Also, there's a shuttle on Saturday that goes to Clifton Commons for free. And of course, there are always performances at Kasser or Memorial (we just had Lewis Black come here). There are a lot of great things to do for fun, but if you stay locked away in your room, you'll probably miss out on all of it.

    Food and Dining

Sodexo is pretty decent; sometimes the food is great, sometimes it's mediocre. But overall it's good. There's a menu online so you can see what's going to be served on any given day. And next year, (allegedly) there's going to be a Dunkin Donuts, Taco Bell, Quik Chek, and something else (I can't remember) on campus in Blanton. But don't tell anyone! Shhhhh!

    Dorm Life

The Heights are gorgeous, and now that Bohn is being taken offline for next year, there won't be a single bad place to live on campus. I loved my first year (in Machuga, Clara Barton). But really, it's all about who you live with and whether or not you get along with your roommate.

    Academic Rigor

I've found music classes to be pretty challenging. But how interesting/challenging a course is completely depends on which professor you have.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't eat the eggchiladas at Freeman, join the honors program if you can, meet as many people as you can the first week, go to events for about a month until you figure out what kind of clubs/events you like best, try and meet people from other majors,

    In three sentences

Montclair State University is a wholly underrated school. Sure, it doesn't have the best reputation, but I can honestly say that in my first year here, I have never felt more at home. If you're looking for a great music school for a reasonable price, check out Montclair, it really is fabulous.

From dining halls, Dormitories, recreational center, pools, and extracurricular actives and to quality professors and academics I made the right choice with MSU.

    What to do for fun

There is always something to do here and membership is included in tuition so its free to use (so to speak). There are a large assortment of clubs and sports to join, as well as cabs, trains and buses to take you to the city or any mall you want to go.

    What to do for fun

What I love most about Montclair is the many activities they have for all the students that attend. They have many clubs and group activities for both dorming and commuting students. Freeman Dining hall is my favorite but it is out of the way for me to go to all the time. In my opinion, the food is more fresh there and you get a better choice at what you want to eat that day.

    Campus Safety

When it comes to campus Safety, they are very serious about it. They do have strict policies (just like any university should have) to ensure that each student feels safe. If something does happen at the university they immediately solve the situation which means that you can go to Montclair knowing that you will feel safe and be safe. Don't be hesitant and go to them if you see anything suspicious or if you are going through something because at the end of the day your safety matters. Think about it, if one student is safe from harm then that means the rest of the students are safe also.

    What to do for fun

There are numerous of things to do. There are many clubs and organizations that you can join such as SGA (Student Government Association), LASO (Latin American Student Organization), Sororities and Fraternities such as Lambda Theta Alpha. There are just so many things that you can explore and take advantage of. Just like any college parties do happen. It is best to balance you work life from your social life. It is best to go to parties when you have free time not when it would interfere with you school work but other than that, if u plan to come to Montclair, enjoy your college experience.

    Food and Dining

The food at Montclair is OK. When you are dorming I advise you to avoid the Freshman 15 which is where many first-year students gain 15 pounds once they start college. There are dining halls such as Carpe Diem and Sam's Place. The food is pretty delicious so therefore, be wise and live a healthy life style.

    Dorm Life

Even though I am a commuter, I rated 4 stars for dorm life because I have heard from many students that they enjoy the dorm life and after a while, they have gotten use to it.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on the professors you have will dictate your experience within the classroom but most of the professors are great at what they do. The academics are also pretty challenging.

The campus is very safe and located in a more wealthy area of Essex county.

    Clubs and Activities

There's a club for just about everything here at MSU. There are numerous greek organizations, science clubs, ethnic clubs, a GLBT club, as well as various religious and secular organizations.

Great for these types of students

Music and theater majors, microbiology and environmental science, and education majors.

    Bang for the buck

MSU is, undoubtedly, a great value for the level of education and research opportunities present.

    What to do for fun

The campus has a train connection to take you most places, and the campus is about 20 minutes from NYC. There are parties on campus almost every weekend, as well as outdoor dance events every year/semester. For a great show, visit the Kasser Theater (where students get one free ticket to every show).

    Food and Dining

Although the quality of the food is pretty average, the costs of food are fairly high compared to surrounding businesses. Take advantage of the Student Center convenience store, which serves the best coffee on campus for a cheap price (as well as inexpensive sandwiches).

    Dorm Life

The University built 4 new residence halls called the Heights about a year ago. They are modern, clean and beautiful from the outside.

    Academic Rigor

The University prides itself on the academics present here. Most professors carry the highest degree possible in their field, and are constantly involved in field research.

    Tips for prospective students

Take advantage of all of the freebies (food, concerts, shows, etc.) while on campus. Use the library as much as you can for studying and reading. If you're planning to commute, grab a locker as soon as you can!

    Campus Safety

There have been many cases within the last few years but overall the campus police do their job to quickly resolve the cases in a safe manner with out interrupting classes.

    Greek Life

The Greek Life is not up to date on this campus. They have brothers and sisters who do not know what they are doing. One reason for this, is because they do not have proper guidance nor these are truly respected sororities or fraternities worldwide.

    Clubs and Activities

Even though this school has many clubs and activities they really are not enough to cover all the different types of people that this campus holds. The clubs seem to be for the type of people who are outcasts and need a place to meet with other outcasts.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for people who are willing to go out their and make friends. Also it is great for people who are willing to not spend a lot on a State University and get a true college experience.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Any unusual locations on campus that I was surprised to see was the commuter lounge. This is a place designated for commuters to hang out between classes and enjoy a place to stay while they wait for their next class to start.

    Bang for the buck

Even if you commute or dorm this school is a State University and for the little amount of money one pays for tuition it has to be the number one in the state.

    What to do for fun

That is the question that you will ask yourself on a Friday night after classes and find your self staying in. On the campus it self there is not much of the fun and party life. For all of those who like to party, you would need to go to the clubs around the school, like Patterson.

    Food and Dining

They have many different options when it comes to food. There food overall is good for the price. The only overpriced place on campus is the sushi bar and the Hawk diner.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life it great but it does not have programs that forces students to interactive with one another. Overall you could go your whole school career in your dorm and make not one friend.

    Academic Rigor

At times it could be more difficult and challenging. Of course the 100 level classes are one of the easiest classes but when it comes to 300 level classes it becomes way more difficult.

    Tips for prospective students

The ones that I could give is to make many friends and join the different clubs that they have. That is one way of getting your voice heard to different crowds of people.

    In three sentences

Montclair State University is a very well diverse university that has different types of people on its campus. It tends to be a commuter school, but it has a great dorm life experience. When it comes to professors and classes this university has a wide range of options to choose from.

Make sure you are prepared for mid-terms. They always seem to sneak up on students, including me. Get involved in as many activities as you can. Go on some of the fun trips provided. I went white water rafting and I loved it!

    In three sentences

Montclair State University has a beautiful campus despite all of the construction. Professors are very knowledgeable. There are many clubs to be involved in.

    ski club

    Bang for the buck

I'm happy with the value of this school as compared to other state colleges.

    What to do for fun

I snow board and college is less than an hour from vernon valley. Close to malls. Many restaurants

    Food and Dining

    Not wonderful.

    Dorm Life

Over crowded. RAs serve no real purpose at Montclair.

    Academic Rigor

The nursing classes are rigorous. Other classes and requirements not so much

    Tips for prospective students

Live off campus. There are lots of apartments in the area. Food in the cafeteria is not so great either. Signing up for classes isn't really fair- I waited up til midnite the day I could register and was not able to get the courses at the times i wanted nor was i able to get signed into the classes by an advisor.

    In three sentences

The nursing progrqam is really challenging. The campus is small enough so that you can easily get around. Living on campus wasn't a good experience for me.

    Campus Safety

It has gotten better over the last year, but honestly campus police seems more concerned with pulling over people who are speeding than making rounds in the buildings and monitoring other areas.

    Greek Life

We have professional and social Greek organizations. Greek Life isn't huge, but it is a large part of campus, and they do hold many of the programs and activities that go on.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a ton of things to get involved with, but like I said you need to go out and look for what interests you.

Great for these types of students

You need to be outgoing and willing to meet new people. Everyone here is so diverse, so you need to be open to that.

    Bang for the buck

There is a lot of construction going on to better the campus, but right now it's more of an annoyance than a help. When it's done it will look great, but right now, it looks terrible.

    What to do for fun

There are a lot of programs going on throughout the day/ week. Community assistants in the resident halls are always having programs as well as all the student government organizations and Greek life. You cant just sit around and expect fun to come to you. You need to walk around, read flyers and check your e-mails.

    Food and Dining

From what I have tried, I have come to the conclusion that it really depends where you decide to get food from on campus that makes all the difference. The dining halls are less appealing than the other places on campus (diner, sub connection & Guy Fieri on Campus). You need to search around for what you will enjoy.

    Dorm Life

I have never lived in their dorms, but I have been to them. The new buildings are immaculate, and I know that many other res halls are in the process of being renovated.

    Academic Rigor

The program I am in (Dual Degree/ Dual Certification Special Education Masters Program) is very work intensive. They expect your highest academic ability to be channeled into your work. Professors are constantly pushing you to be your best and learn as much practical and essential information as possible so you may utilize it in your everyday life.

    Tips for prospective students

Talk to a student who is currently in the program you are interested in (and fully immersed into the core classes), and talk to them. Knowing how other real life students feel about what is offered can help you make the best decision.

    In three sentences

The school has an enormous amount of programs, and many that are up and coming. However, it is as if the administration does not fine tune the programs until they have been around for a few semesters. The school should try to get more feedback form its current students in those programs.

    I feel safe here.

    Greek Life

I am part of Alpha Lambda Delta, a National Honors Society for First Year Students. I just recently joined it, and I would suggest for others with a good GPA to join it.

    Clubs and Activities

I am a part of Rhythm Nation Dance Club. I enjoy going, and I would like others to partake in it too. The Club meets twice a week, and it is a great way to keep in shape and to have fun.

    Food and Dining

I go to Sam's Place on campus because it is located very close to me, and I would suggest it as a good dining place for others to eat at. The employees are friendly, and for the most part, the place is clean to eat at.

    Dorm Life

I like living on campus because it gives me an opportunity to run into more students that are in my classes. However, it is difficult to adjust to living with a roommate. The only thing I can suggest is to seek out the Community Adviser if you are having any problems.

    Academic Rigor

I am currently in good academic standing. This is a title that students who are not failing their courses receive. Understanding the material you learn is a key to doing well in college. Because keeping up your grades is important, seek out teachers or other classmates if you need help.

    Tips for prospective students

Go to class, and sit in the front since it is beneficial. The teacher will know who you are, and if you show that you are taking an interest in the class, the professor will be more understanding rather than you not bothering to show at all. Make sure you do the homework because it is very important and a key to doing well in college.

    In three sentences

Montclair State University is a place where you can meet people from all different ethnic backgrounds who are willing to tell you about their different experiences. It is a good place since the teachers are willing to help you, and I am very pleased with this school.

    Bang for the buck

It does seem pricy for our college, but everything is new. College was never expected to be cheap.

    What to do for fun

There are plenty of clubs to join and get involved as well as sports. Greek life is also a great option at our college. Our students also get emails about daily activities going around campus to help students get involved and meet more people.

    Food and Dining

The dining halls connected to our dorms are really very good. It obviously won't compare to a homemade meal by your parents, but it's definitely up there. The staff is so fun and talkative. There's food almost everywhere and with so many different options.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is absolutely amazing. I'm so thankful for the friends I met my first year. Montclair is smart with housing and separate the halls by grade so freshman can make new friends. The dorms have rules to follow by for safety but other than that you have complete freedom.

    Academic Rigor

Our school is average with their academic rigor. There are many different resources to help succeed, so it seems impossible to do terrible.

    Tips for prospective students

Everyone is always so excited and determined to do well in the beginning, but towards the middle/end students start to slack off... don't! Work hard every step of the way and it will pay off in your favor in the end.

    Campus Safety

I feel safe most of the time on campus. There is a number you can call if you ever don't feel safe walking on campus. There are always police officers around. I have a class late at night and that is the only time I don't feel safe, but I usually intentionally walk with a group.

    Clubs and Activities

There are always activities going on around campus! You just have to look for them and be involved all the time.

    What to do for fun

There are always events going on around campus. There is never a shortage of activities to be involved in. It can be a little dead on campus, but you just have to make your own fun.

    Food and Dining

The food is ok. There could most definitely be a lot more choices on campus. I hop e they bring more restaurants in the future. The dining hall food is alright. It gets kind of boring after awhile.

    Dorm Life

I love dorming! You meet all kinds of people that live in your dorm. It's an awesome experience and everyone should dorm if they get the chance. It is a real college experience. Although sometimes the weekends can be pretty dead there are always events going on around campus.

    Academic Rigor

Most of my classes are rigorous. I've had a few classes that were kind of easy, but it was mostly because of the professor. I am challenged and learning as much as possible.

    Tips for prospective students

    Clubs and Activities

i plan on joining the basketball club and not the team because i just prefer to play for fun and not competitively.

    What to do for fun

I usually play basketball and workout so i'd go to recreation center. Not only is the mind a powerful weapon, but the body is as well.

    Food and Dining

The food here was amazing and very satisfying. The first time i ate here, i couldn't believe how amazing this food was. I knew this was going to be a good year from the start, the food just made it even better.

    Dorm Life

I have met my room mate already and he's a really cool guy. We even divided on who should bring what to dorm. Also, it's better than being at home and gives you more of a living experience outside side of home or the city one lives in.

    Academic Rigor

I know that by just attending one can't have perfect grades, but if you work and study hard, you can achieve anything. The mind truly is a powerful weapon, so it's obviously worth using to an advantage.

    Tips for prospective students

    What to do for fun

I tended to come home on the weekends, so to be fair I can't comment on weekend activities. I did however make use of the Rec center while I was on campus, which they just rebuilt and has A LOT of amenities.

    Food and Dining

It takes a little while to get used to, but the food is actually pretty good. There's always plenty to chose from, and when you're feeling like you want something other than dining hall food, go to the Red Hawk Diner located right on campus, their staff is friendly and their food is great!

    Dorm Life

I dormed for the first two years, and commuted for the second two years of my undergraduate career. Dorming was a fun experience, but to be fair I never got too heavily involved in any of the campus activities. I can tell you that your dorming experience will all depend on where you are. For example: some dorms like mine have 2 bathrooms per floor, and others have 1 bathroom per 2 rooms. While sharing a bathroom with 20+ other guys was not always the best experience, I didn't have to clean or do any of that stuff, where as, my friends who shared a bathroom with another room, were responsible for the upkeep of that bathroom.

    Academic Rigor

If you study hard, you should have no issues doing well at MSU. I'm sure different majors have different rigor, but in the Athletic Training major, if AT is your passion, you will literally enjoy going to class and learning. With that said you have to study, even if you're a natural, study.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be shy, sign up for activities, clubs, other organizations. You want to find your own way to become a part of the University, and building relationships with other students through the many organizations/clubs/activities will help you have something outside of academics to really identify with.

    In three sentences

Montclair State University was the best thing to ever happen to me. It provided me with the tools, both academic and professional, to prepare me for my career as an Athletic Trainer. I also loved the facilities, with a great library and student center, there was always SOMETHING happening on campus to keep us busy.

    Campus Safety

I have seen policeman on campus during the day and at night I have witnessed police cars around certain parts of campus such as dorms and buildings near the entrance of the school. At night, there is a phone number you can call to contact them if you feel you need assistance to walk to your car or back to your dorm (that's if you feel unsafe due to the darkness, etc.)

    Greek Life

We have multiple fraternities and sororities that are constantly organizing events and aiming to keep the campus energized. However, I am not a part of an organization so I can't shed more light on the matter.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs to join on campus ranging from Japanese to Sciences and Radio. It is very easy to join these organizations - all you have to do is show up to meetings! Every week there is something to attend to on campus. Our campus organizes fun events that happen either during the day or night (typically in our Rec Center). All activities are free to students including performances at our theaters - well known acts from around the world come to our campus!

Great for these types of students

Arts/History - Our campus has a Newspaper and Radio Station, both easy to join and runs weekly every semester. We also have two theaters and both a dance and theater department. One of our buildings is specifically devoted to the arts - any class related to the subject is taught there (Calcia Hall). We also have an art gallery in which students exhibit their work and artists from different regions hold their galleries. On campus, there is also a Music school - orchestras play at our theater as well. Sciences/Mathematics - We have two buildings devoted to the subject. Multiple organizations and meetings are held on campus that involve the subject as well as guest speakers from the professional world. In general, our professors are professionals at what they teach. Sport - We have multiple fields for many sports including, soccer, rugby, football, tennis, softball etc. There is a recreation center free for students that have events weekly. Our rec center also has a pool. Language - Our campus has an entire department devoted to linguistics and the like. Multiple clubs also specialize in a particular language such as the Japan Club.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

One thing our campus is known for, is being built on Indian burial grounds, therefore some students claim that MSU is haunted ... particularly near Bohn Hall.

    Bang for the buck

Our tuition is affordable and covers dozens and dozens of activities that go on campus. If you're just going to go to class and go home, you're missing out on a whole lot that MSU has to offer and that you're paying for.

    What to do for fun

Things to do for fun include to join clubs, go on field trips through the university (such as baseball games and broadway plays in NYC), go to the rec center and be actively supporting our sport teams by going to games with friends.

    Food and Dining

The prices are a little much, but every university is the same. The foods vary from Guy Fieris to Mexican foods, Sushi and stereotypical American (fried foods). Also, our campus is one of the few with our own diner!

    Dorm Life

I am a commuter, but MSU has various dorm buildings all throughout campus.

    Academic Rigor

MSU, hires professors with great experience and professionalism. They push their students to strive for higher expectations on themselves and what they're getting for the money they're spending. And education is an investment, make it at the right place!

    Tips for prospective students

One big tip is to not buy your textbooks until you get to class the first day. Some professors change their minds, or don't even use them and tell you it's okay if you don't buy it. Other times, they'll allow you to buy older editions but won't say so until you get to class the first day. Also, keep confident. The campus is yours!

    In three sentences

Montclair State has amazing professors who do their best to prepare you for your field of study. We have many activities and organizations on campus that push for the leader in you and that are equally fun and unique. We have our own diner on campus which is rare and serve many different kinds of food - we're a well rounded university!

    Campus Safety

Safety is top priority here. There is a Montclair Police station built right into the school campus adjacent to the school parking lot. Bullying or any violent/inappropriate act of any kind will NOT BE TOLERATED. If you do choose to forgo this warning, do so at your own risk.

Great for these types of students

Japanese Anime Club for any student fascinated by those types of cartoons. This is just one that pops in my head because I read about it. The is a book filled with the many clubs are run throughout the school. It will be given free to incoming freshman.

    Bang for the buck

Textbooks are a tad expensive but there is an option to rent instead which greatly reduces the prices by $50 even $60.

    What to do for fun

There is a vast sea of clubs and activities for you to do. Even if you are not a physical person and don't really play any sports, there are a wide variety of clubs that are very inviting and sociable. Such as a Biology, Student Government, Japanese Heritage to name a small amount out of the many present. It will be worth it, trust me

    Food and Dining

Food is good. There are several dining areas on campus that cater foods of all kinds. So there is no issue there

    Dorm Life

Personally, I am a commuter but I have heard that dorm life is very pleasant. There will be obvious rules and restrictions but it will provide a taste of freedom in a sense.

    Academic Rigor

Prepare for essays 4-5 pages long, labs, and advanced math courses online. This may be overwhelming for some and slightly difficult for others. But do believe that you will be all the better for it.

    Tips for prospective students

Just put yourself out there and you will find a very open and diverse environment looking to break you out of any shell you may have. The effort will be worth it.

    In three sentences

Student and Faculty alike are very welcoming. Literally, there is nothing here that won't meet your interests. Because of this experience, I do plan on finishing all four years here.

    Campus Safety

There are many safety features on campus and I have never felt unsafe on campus, even though this is an open campus. We have academy trained police patrolling the campus at all times and there are phones everywhere that connect straight to their department.

    Greek Life

Greek life is only about 4% of our population. We are NOT a Go Greek or Go Home type of school, but there are tons of Fraternities and Sororities to join if you choose to do so. They're always holding awesome events and their presence is noticeable, but not in a negative way.

    Bang for the buck

My parents are paying NOTHING and this school is amazingly affordable. I am on scholarship and I do live in state, but overall, this is a good education for an amazing price.

    What to do for fun

I go to the City (NYC) all the time, because the train station is a 10 minute walk from my room, and a 40~60 minute ride to go STRAIGHT into NY Penn. I also participate in clubs, events, give tours as an ambassadors, and hang out with friends. This campus is big enough to avoid the people you want to avoid, but also small enough to see all of your friends at least once a day!

    Food and Dining

The food on campus is so so. I just wish I could have more control over what I am eating. I want to see more nutrition facts and know what I'm eating. Then again, maybe it's simply because I'm a nutrition major and I care a LOT about what I'm eating.

    Dorm Life

Although I don't like my roommate, I AM enjoying residential life. My room is MUCH larger than I expected it to be and I love that I have my own private bathroom. The laundry is free and there are always study lounges available for me to study and get away if I need to.

    Academic Rigor

The classes I've taken so far have not been TOO difficult to handle. Then again, I'm only a Freshman and have only taken Freshman level classes.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you find what you want here. There is so much this University has to offer, just LOOK for it! I should know. I work 15 hours a week at two on campus jobs, I actively participate in THREE clubs, I'm also an Admissions Ambassador and an Honors Student. Do I ever have free time? Not really. Is it worth it? Definitely.

    In three sentences

Everyone here is welcoming and friendly. I have NOT met a single unkind soul. Great academics, great faulty, great community, and an AMAZING package.

    Campus Safety

I'd say it is a very safe campus.

    Greek Life

I don't find the greek life that interesting at Montclair, because none of the frat houses are on campus.

    Clubs and Activities

Montclair offers a number of great clubs and organizations.

Great for these types of students

Theater or music students, as well as kids that would love to spend the occasional weekend in NYC.

    Bang for the buck

Montclair is a very affordable school for its benefits.

    What to do for fun

Join a club or intramural sport, and go out with friends occasionally. New York City is also just a short train ride away.

    Food and Dining

It is college food, so one cannot expect much.

    Dorm Life

Many students leave on the weekends, but the dorms themselves are very nice.

    Academic Rigor

I don't find the classes to be very rigorous.

    Tips for prospective students

I wouldn't come if you live fairly far away, because many kids go home on the weekends which make you want to go home as well, because the campus is dead on weekends.

    In three sentences

While it is a school growing in stature, I am not a fan of the people I find here. I also don't like the student life, nor the area much. However, the theater program here is fantastic.

    Campus Safety

I have no complaints about campus safety. Dorm staff and campus police do a great job of keeping the campus a safe and friendly environment. They offer an escorting service for those who have to walk alone during the night hours as well. There are also many pull stations all over campus to signal for help should anything happen. Clifton and Little Falls Fire Departments are also very prompt in their responses to campus for fire alarms or whatever incidents call for their assistance.

    Greek Life

I myself am not a part of Greek life; I have considered it, possibly Pike. Pike is actually the fraternity late night host Jay Leno is a member of. There are roughly 30 fraternities and sororities, and many of them are highly active in the surrounding communities and can increase you span of connections. It does cost members some money to fund his or her organization to ensure there is money for activities and hosting events. A lot of the frats and sororities work together with other Greek life groups and some even branch out to work with non-Greek clubs and organizations.

    Clubs and Activities

There are numerous student body groups like student government and ethnic/religious groups. Club Sports is also an expanding entity. I am the Vice President and a co-founder of men's club lacrosse at MSU. Spring of 2014 will be our first season. There are contact sports like hockey and wrestling, and ladies, there's a club ice hockey team for you as well as of this year. There is also basketball, volleyball, swimming, soccer -men's team also just recently established. So there are plenty of groups to join and there is still the opportunity for you to be a founder of club sport or some sort of student association.

Great for these types of students

I think Montclair is great for all students. There is so much to learn, so many people to meet. It is just a well-rounded establishment. Earning a degree from MSU is a great foundation for any college student.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Webster Hall is haunted, so I have been told, but I never see anyone enter or exit the building... I am not that involved so I don't have much to say on the topic.

    Bang for the buck

Since I commute from home, I think I get the best deal. I only have to cover tuition and books, and if you win a scholarship or a few, you're paying even less. I cannot stop promoting the commuting option enough because of how much it can save you. The facilities are state-of-the-art or getting there. We have two new buildings under construction right now, and the school does its best to provide the best for its students. And if you like going to plays, students get into the campus theater for free for school productions. There is a lot offered for free at the Rec Center as well, along with free seminars and other meetings at other locations on campus.

    What to do for fun

I don't spend a lot of time on campus now that I am in my clinic rotation for my major, but there is so much to do at the Rec Center alone that you can always find something to do to entertain yourself and hang out with friends or make new ones. Just a heads up, the first couple of weeks each semester, the gym is packed, but it calms down soon after and mornings usually don't have a lot of competition for machines. I just like spending time with good people for fun, and we usually end up eating together when we do. I tend to stick with my circle of friends from my major most of the time, and hardly anyone has time for a job so we rarely leave campus together to go out somewhere. There's plenty of other events hosted by the organizations on campus, dances, dodge ball tournaments, a whole bunch of stuff. I am only bored when I give into hanging out in someone's dorm room, not a lot of place for a group of people to be comfortable.

    Food and Dining

Food is one of my favorite things in life, and there are some decent options on campus. I myself have grown tired of Sam's Place, but I do like the other dining establishments. The diner is pretty good; service is usually slow, but the food is good. There's also an Einstein's Bagel shop and a Starbucks on campus. The Student Center offers a lot of options from Tex-Mex to sandwiches and wraps. We also have a pizzeria on campus. If you don't mind driving, there are plenty of places to eat along Rts. 3 & 46 and Valley Road.

    Dorm Life

I cannot comment on dorm life really because I commute. But my friends who dorm seem to like. However when I hang out with them in the dorms, I feel suffocated. There is not a lot of personal space. I think dorming is too expensive and not worth it. I cannot afford the room or the meal plan myself, and with the way the economy is, I don't see how some parents are willing to pay for it when their child is in a commuting distance. Commuting can be strenuous, but you can still make friends, have your car on campus as a freshman, and have a job where you can work more than 20 hours per week if you need/can. If you dorm, you're kind of stuck and parking is a lot more expensive annually.

    Academic Rigor

As for academics, I cannot speak for one's general experience. I am an Athletic Training major, and it is one of most rigorous course loads any one could have, possibly the toughest major on campus, but one of the best programs in the region. I think freshman writing classes are probably the toughest Gen Ed requirements because there is so much work. If you need a structured class for writing to keep you engaged, take the hybrid class. I just took it and it is tough like other writing classes, but there is more incentive to participate because there are more assignments. All the other Gen Ed classes I have taken demand about as much as high school teachers. The difficulty of learning all the material is all dependent on time management and self-motivation. The classes are not overwhelmingly challenging. My first semester, I took 15 credit hours, worked 20-30 hours per week, and I was taking a class at a fire academy 3-4 nights a week; I did well at work and the academy. And I managed to earn a 3.26GPA. You can work yourself to near death and half a successful academic term.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are considering MSU, take a tour when classes are in session; there will be more people to meet and guide you than there would be over a break or low-attendance session. Apply fall of your senior year, to any college/university. I recommend commuting. I live about 40 miles from campus, and it takes about an hour to get to school in the morning, but I think it is more cost-effective, especially with the unstable economy. Explore extra-curricular options before your first day. I made the mistake of not doing that, but now that I have a schedule booked morning to nightfall because of my major, it does not make a difference for me. But I encourage you to go find your own little comfort zone. I don't see how some people can just sit in his or her dorm room all day and not go anywhere to interact with people other than class. Don't pick so many things that you overwhelm yourself though. Just give a couple groups a chance and see which ones you like or think you will make the most friends and connections with.

    In three sentences

Montclair State is a beautiful and clean campus in a great neighborhood. I think it has some of the best facilities and programs in the state, if not the region. MSU is worth your time and money.

    Tips for prospective students

Take the orientation classes before starting your classes there. Look at maps online of the campus just in case you get lost.

    In three sentences

I fell in love with Montclair State University for the first time I ever heard of it. Both my sister and uncle attended this university and they are very happy with their careers now. My favorite part about the campus is that it is very beautiful and everyone is very diverse and neighborly.

    Dorm Life

A lot of the people that dorm go home during the weekends. The new dorms are very nice and comfortable. They always keep them looking clean and new.

    Academic Rigor

Montclair focuses a lot on writing. They want their students to excel in writing. The writing classes that are mandatory can be challenging.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not be scared to ask for help. Everyone at Montclair State is always willing to help.

    Campus Safety

The campus has police all around throughout the entire day, 24/7. In case of emergency, there are emergency buttons throughout campus. I feel so safe here on campus, and so do all my friends.

    Greek Life

There is not a big Greek Life selection here at the University.

    What to do for fun

For fun here at Montclair State University, we have the gym which is beautiful and recently built, and they provide alot of activities. There are also sports teams, and club teams to join for fun. Also, there is a calendar given out every single month with a list of meetings and things to do every day. The school also provides trips to places like New York city, since we are 12 minutes away from the Big Apple. Most tickets that are given out are discounted at a great price! Different buildings hold different events, week after week, all you got to do is keep your eyes open, and be wanting to get out of your comfort level.

    Food and Dining

The food on Montclair's campus gets to be extremely boring and unsatisfying. I recommend having a fridge and a microwave in one's dorm just so that you can change it up a bit. The food can be very repetitive and leave you hungry early in the night, considering all of the dinning halls close at 9 p.m., and in the college life, that's early!

    Dorm Life

I live here at Montclair State University, and it definitely wasn't what I expected it to be. Many people do go home on the weekends, and sometimes I find myself sleeping the whole weekend, or going home with the rest of the University to do useful things at home. If you have a good group of friends, one could keep themselves entertained, but since the work load of any of my classes wasn't bad, I had alot of free time, which some people would really enjoy. The gym here is BEAUTIFUL and they have multiple exercise classes every single day. In the end, the dorms are new, and really new, but just don't expect to be partying every single night at huge frats because that's not what happens.

    Academic Rigor

The website the university uses for grades and following up with classes throughout the semester is very confusing and unflattering, but the university is switching to a different website, instead of Black Board, the university is using Canvas. On the good side, the teachers are very understanding and really helpful. In all honesty, the classroom makes me feel very comfortable, unlike how I felt in high school. Professors are very reliable and are always answering their emails. The work load isn't that bad, but within the first weeks of ones first semester, it was stressful just getting used to the fact of the change. High school and college are extremely different, but in the end, college is so much better!

    Tips for prospective students

Tips for students that are interested in Montclair State University should know that the financial aid office is not helpful what so ever. Also, classes never really get cancelled, even when weather is extremely bad, the campus waits till the last minute to close down, which is very dangerous in my eyes, especially for commuters. Parking is the worse about this school too. One may get a ticket if they park in the a wrong area, even if it's for a small amount of time. Lastly, the campus doesn't have many food options. The food seems to be good on the day of orientation, but once you start classes, the food is put together poorly and most of the time unappetizing. In the end, Montclair doesn't have many flaws from my point of view, except for the ones I pointed out.

    In three sentences

Montclair State University is a wonderful campus, with a diverse group of people, creating the community to feel like home to one. Weekends are somewhat of a bore, but their is always something to do on the weekdays if one is interested in looking into clubs, sports, or any other activity that might interest someone. In the end, Montclair is a welcoming university, with awesome teachers, a beautiful campus that isn't to big to make one overwhelmed!

    What to do for fun

Montclair State has many fun daily recreational activities for students. From movies to sports, competitions, barbecues and more, students may always find an activity to take part in. Joining clubs and organizations also opens the doors to many more activities that can expand a student's social circle as well as their enjoyment.

    Food and Dining

Montclair State's food and dining is varied and economically accessible to all students. From the Universities's Rathskeller (main dining facility), to the Red Hawk Diner , Sam's Place (buffet style dining facility), to the Einstein Brothers and Dunkin Doughnuts. The food is delicious and varied to satisfy almost any diet.

    Dorm Life

Monclair State University has award winning dorms. They are beautiful and comfortable. There are single and double dorms as well as apartment style dorms. The dorms are comfortable and there are many to choose from at different ends of campus.

    Academic Rigor

MSU's academic rigor is not as much expressed as it is expected from each student. College is not meant to be stressful on the contrary given that a certain subject will be studied for 3-5 years time, thus a student (when determining what they really want to do) should expect the best of themselves so that may achieve the best.

    Tips for prospective students

Montclair State University has a large campus that as an incoming freshman may seem overwhelming. However, about 2 weeks into the semester MSU will become your home away from home. Although MSU has many clubs and activities for the student's enjoyment, academics are very important. The best advise will be to enjoy college life by learning, developing and enhancing time management skills. Thus, college life will be enjoyable both academically and recreational.

    In three sentences

Montclair State University provides a wonderful and productive educational environment. The campus is not only extremely beautiful but it also has all the resources that contribute to the student's academic success. The professors are qualified and experienced in their fields, and along with fellow students and the rest of the staff and faculty every student has at their service a community to rely on for support through their college career.

    Campus Safety

Police are right on campus and will be there for you no matter what the situation is. They are very strict when it comes to partying tho so being responsible is key when going to this college.

    Greek Life

A lot of frats and sororities, but only way to really go to parties unless you have friends who can get you in.

    Clubs and Activities

Decent amount of clubs and activities to do on campus such as baseball and football.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Freeman is full of art majors, but most of them are very weird and awkward. Kind of looked at as the odd side of campus.

    Bang for the buck

Academically and housing-wise (if you live in dinallo/heights) yes, you get your moneys worth. The food tho here is awful and the cooks seem like half of them had criminal records. I asked for something about a week ago and they were extremely rude to me.

    What to do for fun

Not much to do for fun besides clubs and activities on campus. Most people appear to go home on the weekends since the school is dead half the time.

    Food and Dining

Food here is awful and the staff appears to have had criminal records of some sort by the way they all are very sketchy. Also, they are very rude and not helpful by any means.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is good only if you live in dinallo/heights. Otherwise you have to deal with many problems such as air conditioning. Dinallo and the heights on the other hand has a lot to offer with beautiful views of the city (assuming you get a good view from your dorm). The interior is well maintained and just recently finished with modern essentials such as flat screen televisions.

    Academic Rigor

The teachers here at Montclair are very passionate about their jobs and are willing to help most students. Besides my speech teacher who was extremely rude, all of my professors offer to meet with me at my convenience in their office when they are there. The work load can be daunting at times, but as long as you study hard and manage your time right it is manageable to get the grades you want.

    Tips for prospective students

After staying here my first year I find that the campus in general is a bit boring since most people commute. On the other hand, if you are a shut-in and love to do work 24-7 then maybe this is the school for you. Just be careful when choosing this school because I found that I actually made the wrong choice and want to transfer out of here for more exciting college experiences next year after my sophomore year once I save enough money up.

    In three sentences

Montclair is a school that academically is one of the best schools New Jersey has to offer. On the other hand, it has many issues. If you are just coming here as a commuter then it shouldn't be a huge problem and you may love it here.
