Categories Comments Great for these types of students Montclair State is an artsy school, a school that is well known for its arts. Montclair State's arts programs like music, acting, dance, musical theater, and painting are well known across the nation. Also, Montclair State has a well known teaching program, and has the nation's only doctorate program in pedagogy. Montclair State was originally founded in 1908 as a school to train, educate, and produce qualified teachers.
Tips for prospective students The search for the right college for you starts with knowing who you are as a person. Find out what you were created to do. What are your passions and desires? What is it that you do that gives you the most enjoyment? The answers to these questions will give you an idea of what you are called to. Look into whatever you answered to these questions and see if you can match it into a subject of study, a major , or a career goal. Once you have done this, start looking for colleges and universities that have these areas of study. Visit some of these campuses and see which one fits you best. Decide on a college, hopefully Montclair State University, and prepare for adjustments that will most likely have to be made if you are living on campus. You will most likely have a roommate, a meal plan, and will be sharing a bathroom. Try to get along with your roommate as best as possible, and make friends that have the same goals and interests as you. Choose friends that want to see you succeed, and help each other reach your goals. Last but not least, be safe have fun!
Bang for the buck Montclair State is very affordable, tuition, room and board, and fees adding up to about $20,678 per year. With these prices going up every year, Montclair State will always be more affordable than many other private instutions, since it is a public institution. Montclair State's office of financial aid will assist you in finding financial aid through scholarships, grants, and loans. They are extremely helpful to me when I have questions about financing my education.
Am enjoying being here Montclair State offers a variety of academic programs to support you in the pursuit of your career goals. I have made many friends in a program I am enrolled in, and making friends makes college life that much more enjoyable. There are also many clubs to get involved in. There is the Latin American Student Organization(LASO), the Carribean Student Organization(CaribSO), the Organization of Students for African Unity(OSAU), and many others. There are multiple Greek Life fraternities and sorroties you can become a member of. There are many spiritual organizations to join, according to your faith. For example, there is Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, which I am a member of, and the Muslim Student Organization. Make sure to get involved with clubs and activities.
Am learning a lot Montclair State University's student to faculty ratio is 17 to 1, and class size is not large. The environment is just right for learning, and it is put together for your academic success.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students MSU is great for all kinds of students campus community is very diverse fun and beautiful. Many activities to do. I'll recommend this school to anyone who wants to have a future!!!
Tips for prospective students Well you would have probably heard a lot of things about Montclair( many terrible things) but I want to tell you otherwise MSU is one of the greatest public schools in the state and country at large. It is very affordable, environment is very conducive, students are active friendly and intelligent, staff are resourceful and helpful even though there maybe some exceptions, food is OK, plenty activities to do a lot of clubs and organizations, financial aid and scholarships are available, on campus jobs are available and they even bend it around your schedule, there is also a train station on campus that takes you to NY. People MSU is really a great school I believe you should come and see for yourself. Just get good grades in High school, get involved in as many extra curricula activities as you can and also apply early.
Bang for the buck Affordable!!! I believe that what we are paying for we are even getting more the type of education being received at MSU I can say is quite similar to the ivies...the only difference is that it is cheaper!!!
Am enjoying being here O yeah before I came to this school I didn't like it because of all that I heard but later on I found out they were just lies ..... I enjoy most of the time here even though some days don't just go as wished or planed. My time so far in MSU is worthwile.
Academic Rigor Montclair has a lot of Majors and programs!!! And you will also learn from the people you meet. there are a lot of facilities and resources available on campus. Research is also on the rise at this institution.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students ALL STUDENTS. NO MATTER WHAT.
Tips for prospective students You will do the best you can.
Bang for the buck Montclair is a great choice for its price. I am a commuter and my tuition is only about $13,000; now if you board it'll be about 20,000. You get many priviliges and have so many choices of programs and entertainment to participate in from C.S.I . Sounds cool? Well it is. Come join and find out!!
Am enjoying being here The campus is comfortable and easy to get around in. Shuttle buses are FREE and come about every 5 mins. The student center is most likely where you will spend most of your days. Here you will find cafeterias, printing labs, computer rooms, the place for financial aid help, ID's, or even the school store filled with books and souvenirs to take home or wear! They even have fooseball!
Am learning a lot Each one of my courses has its own challenges and keeps me on my feet. Class size arent huge at all and you can have one on one discussions with the professor during their office hours. It is a great learning institution and your professors will showcase that.

Bang for the buck Pretty cheap in comparison to other similar colleges

Categories Comments Campus Safety You can ask for a security escort to walk you to where you want to go in the evening. It is an open campus so it could be tricky. Thankfully, we haven't experienced any dangerous situations in the past four years.
Clubs and Activities We have over 140 clubs alone. And probably hundreds of activities to become involved in. There's an activity for everything.
Great for these types of students Vibrant students who just want to ... do stuff would be amazing here.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus It's hard to say what is unusual if I haven't attended another college. But everyone knows and loves the space behind the Rec Center where you can see the NYC skyline, which is gorgeous at night. Construction is a constant at MSU, so always expect that!
Bang for the buck Again, college is what you make of it. I'd say ... yes!
What to do for fun Go to the Rec Center to work out. Be near the Student Center for cool events and free stuff. Hop on a shuttle to Clifton Commons for some good food and shopping. Go to class (seriously!).
Food and Dining Not too bad, not the best thing in the world. Interesting system of paying for food. But hey, can't get enough of the sushi!
Dorm Life Dorm life is pretty great! I've lived on campus all four years, the first three in Freeman Hall and the last year in the Upper Heights. Being on campus all the time really is convenient when you want to be involved. It's a great way to maintain friendships, too. The quality of the dorms have improved, and as long as you take care of your side of the room, you can't complain all that much.
Academic Rigor Depending on the course and professor, the classes can either be super simple or highly challenging. You'll get to know which professors expect more. But don't believe everything on those professor rating sites. Figure out where you stand and choose your classes wisely.
Tips for prospective students Go in with a positive attitude and always listen! There are so many things happening everyday that you do not want to miss, including things that might impact your entire life. Don't always take the easy teachers, challenge yourself because when you've gone through a tough course, at least you can say you made it out alive. Go to professors' office hours. They can put a face to a name and you'll be a step closer to getting that A.
In three sentences I think like any experience, a college education is what you make of it. Montclair State has a surplus of resources to take advantage of and can truly be the college you are proud of. I have had the opportunities to be an active member and leader in on-campus organizations, be a part and establish research project, take part in volunteer work (both off campus and on), study abroad, and redefine myself.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Any student that is interested in music or theater should consider Montclair State University. Our music and theater programs are rising fast and are becoming very popular.
Tips for prospective students Do not be afraid to go for extra help. Montclair offers tutoring for a variety of classes and enough tutors to be able to assist the students needing help. Also the Professors are all required to have office hours where the students can go for extra help. Remember people are not going to ask how much help you had to get your BMW they are just going to know you have it.
Bang for the buck Since Montclair State University is a state university it is not that expensive for me. It is very true about what is said about the educational services here, numerous amounts of people have told me that people graduating from Montclair State University come out being just as well off as people from well known institutes if not better.
Am enjoying being here For me being here is a lot of fun. The people here are all very nice and it is very easy to make friends. There is always something to do on campus like go to free theater performances that the school puts on or going to a sporting event. There are also numerous clubs and geek life that puts on events for the students to attend like dances.
Am learning a lot The Professors at Montclair State University are all very well educated. They are very understanding and are available during their office hours to help students out. I have no trouble following my teachers during their lectures and they give me a wealth of information that is easy to remember.

Categories Comments Tips for prospective students APPLY EARLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bang for the buck When I applied I was hopeing to be part of the Musical Theatre school but I was declined. But I'm glad to be going to Montclair and even more ecstatic that I'm actually going to college but If I was going for theatre my first year, Montclair would be worth more bang for its buck but it is a good school, cost wise as well as education.
Will enjoy being here I hope its everything I dreamed of in college. I've been planning on going to college my whole life for performing arts and now the time has finally come when I get to start my career
Will learn a lot I have yet to actually start as a freshman but I am anxiously awaiting to become a red hawk! My brother went here and enjoyed everything about the school so I naturally can't wait!

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Every type of student is great for Montclair. Each housing facility offers unique characteristics that attract certain types of students. Surveys are filled out to ensure that you are matched with the right type of housing fit for your academic and social needs. In addition, the campus organizations are so diverse that anyone could find the perfect fit to grow academically while meeting new people.
Tips for prospective students Bring your own car and expect to arrive early in order to get a decent spot for parking. Also, shuttle buses take a while so make sure you are ahead of schedule in order to avoid arriving to class late.
Bang for the buck MSU is relatively inexpensive compared to other New Jersey state public schools, however certain aspects could be improved for tuition being paid such as campus parking and shuttle transportation. Nevertheless, MSU is the ideal school for getting involved with the student population. Meal options are decent and most are 24 hours so even the oddest hour cravings are fulfilled. In addition, the activities and events are phenomenal, not to mention they occur frequently and most of the time are free!
Am enjoying being here I am thrilled to be living on campus and a vital part to the school community. I was disappointed in the train not running on the weekend but for that blemish, Montclair makes up for it in other transportation services as well as a plethora of campus events and activities throughout the week and weekend. There is not a lack of clubs or organizations at Montclair. Anything under the sun including greek organizations exist and are a prominent part of the school community. Also, the student population is diverse so I get to interact with many different people whom I would not normally have had a chance to associate with. Overall, MSU is great for getting involved in college.
Am learning a lot Montclair State University is diverse in the broad spectrum of courses and majors offered. My current curriculum is excellent in teaching me current information and practices as well as incorporate new technologies. My professors have detailed educational backgrounds on the courses that they teach so I always get the best source of information. Not only are they reputable for their work, but also reliable by making themselves available to the students for their convenience. Classroom instruction is top notch because most of my professors initiate student interaction and teach using several different methods to ensure students are learning efficiently.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Extremely safe campus
Greek Life Lot's of different sororities and fraternities that you can join! The school has a hazing policy so you don't have to worry about getting hurt! There's a wide range of national and local greek organizations as well as co-ed greek organizations. There is even many multicultural groups.
Clubs and Activities Ethnic clubs Multicultural organizations Greek life Sports Intramural sports Student government
Great for these types of students People who learn better in medium sized classrooms with enough students so that you can form study groups while still getting enough attention from professors. Also good for people who like to be social and meet new people.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The campus is beautiful, and it's on a hill!
Bang for the buck Everyone at the school is friendly and it's a great environment to learn in. You'll always have fun here, and you'll be learning at the same time.
What to do for fun There's lots of clubs and activities that you could join for whatever interests you! Lots of ethnic groups Intramural sports Greek life
Tips for prospective students Check out the campus before hand Try to sit-in during an actual class
In three sentences Montclair State University is a beautiful school and i definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a college to attend. The class sizes are good for learning and the professors are very helpful! You learn more at this school than you could anywhere else.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus is safe. Robberies and other crimes rarely happen. Two police stations are accessible on the MSU campus as well as squad cars pro-trolling regularly.
Greek Life MSU has a very vibrant greek life. It is not a necessity to be a part of greek life but is there if interested. As a non sorority member i see a lot of greek life activity.
Clubs and Activities MSU has a good sorority and fraternity life as well as several clubs.
Great for these types of students MSU is located in New Jersey and has a very diverse student body.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus A 24 hour diner is located on campus which accepts meal plan swipes. I found this to be very interesting and fun.
Bang for the buck MSU is an average of 20,000 dollars per year for tuition, room, and board. It is very expensive but reasonable compared to surrounding schools.
What to do for fun I hang out with my roommates for fun. I am in an eight person suite, which gave me lots of opportunities to meet people.
Food and Dining A beautiful dining facility was built and opened it doors in the fall of 2011. The food is supplied by Sudexo and is very appetizing. There are several sections of the dining facility, providing a variety of choices, even for vegetarians and students with other special eating needs.
Dorm Life Although students do dorm at MSU, it is mostly a commuter school. There are not too many activities on the weekends, although if you make an effort to have fun it is possible.
Academic Rigor MSU is set at a challenging academic pace while providing the assets to learn.
Tips for prospective students This school is mostly a commuter school, making it easier to make friends if you are a commuter. The professors are challenging while caring. MSU is an overall great school.
In three sentences MSU has the best of both worlds, an excellent standard of learning and a great location. The professors are insightful and encouraging. The campus is in a great location, located only 14 miles from NYC.

Categories Comments Campus Safety On-campus police are only a 3-digit phonecall away, and are always helpful and never condescending nor mean.
Clubs and Activities Public Health Club! Psychology Club! Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Society!
Bang for the buck With a great name and a lower price tag than most New Jersey schools, Montclair has upped its' game in the past years by getting new dorms and building onto the campus .
What to do for fun There are countless clubs and organizations that people can join so that they stay busy during the week and on weekends! If people want to get off-campus, there are Transit buses that can take you to downtown Montclair, or to the mall, or even the movies! All for only $3.00 roundtrip!
Food and Dining With 3 dining halls, a cafe that serves Starbucks coffee, and a late-night Bistro on campus, people never go hungry.
Dorm Life The brand new Machuga Heights and Dinallo Heights were completed in September of 2011, and they are as beautiful as a 5 star hotel!
Academic Rigor Depending on one's major, the academic rigor can vary. Being a psychology major, I can safely say that I am being challenged.
Tips for prospective students Montclair State University, or MSU, is a school for people who want to learn new things and meet all different sorts of people. Because of the long list of majors that MSU has to offer, it would not be uncommon to be best friends with a theatre major and a nutrition major! If you are looking for a school that will make you feel at home and challenge you academically in your field of study, then Montclair State University is the perfect school for you.
In three sentences From my one year at Montclair State University, I can safely say that we are definitely not lacking in diversity, great professors, and great experiences. Throughout the year there have been various hate crimes and gay threats at the University, but we stuck together and showed everyone that diversity is a wonderful thing. With so much to do and get involved in, Montclair State University has made me feel at home with all of the wonderful students and professors.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Police on campus so you always feel safe! Campus is not too big and people have said that the feel safe living there.
Greek Life Not too sure what this one means....
Clubs and Activities Too many to name honestly...You have your sports clubs, sororities, language clubs, art clubs, probably some music clubs thrown in there.
Great for these types of students Students who love art, or anything art related. I am going. for Graphic Design, but I feel that Montclair offers a variety of different majors to suite anyone's needs.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Nothing to unusual that I have experienced. I have heard of certain special days that they have on campus, and there are always a number of events going on.
Bang for the buck A little expensive for me personally, but compared to the colleges I applied for it is cheaper and way worth it, especially if you are living on campus.
What to do for fun Eat at the many available places on campus. Travel to New York for the day by train. Participate in some of Red Hawk events that are hosted during the week. Enjoy the luxurious computer lab. Play sports, or run around on the track. Hit the pool for a bit on those hot days, and so much more.
Food and Dining So many places to eat. You will not go hungry.....ever.
Dorm Life The dorms are nice. Some areas are nicer than other, so it depends on what you get wen you start. I have no experience living with any one on campus yet, but from what I have heard, it is not that bad. You hardly use your room if you keep busy.
Academic Rigor Many people graduate from Montclair every year. There are many majors and minors in which students can choose from, which gives them the chance to try out new things, and see what fields they may enjoy.
Tips for prospective students Study hard inside and outside of school. Ask for help when you need it. Also, check to see if you can form study groups, or use online resources to help you study.
In three sentences Montclair has a beautiful campus. There is always something on or off campus to do. There are many majors and minors to choose from.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I love that every time there are certain events that take place here, the police and even President Cole will stop at nothing to try to make the university more safe for the students and make them feel more comfortable. MSU supports diversity and I feel that diversity is the key element to a safer campus.
Greek Life If you want to join a sorority/fraternity, you will have the time of your life but make sure you have the time and commitment into joining.
Clubs and Activities There are tons of clubs and activities to choose from. All of these clubs will keep you busy and always will help you have the time of your life. I love L.A.S.O (Latin American Student Organization), I.S.O (International Student Organization) and U.A.A.S.O (Unified Asian American Student Organization). I really recommend that you check them out. They always have TONS of fun events and food.
Great for these types of students This institution is for music, theater, education, and psychology majors. It is not for nutrition majors. It is very hard for nutrition majors here to get certain classes.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Behind Morehead hall is a path that leads to LOTS of stairs. Those stairs are a pain to go up and down from. When you see those stairs, you will be disturbed.
Bang for the buck The tuition raised and I am not liking it. It is cheaper if you are a commuter. I do appreciate that it is not as expensive as other institutions but books are so expensive. I recommend renting the books or even buying them and selling them back. All I can say, apply for scholarship and/or find a job. This will all help you pay for school and even put extra money in your pocket.
What to do for fun You can hang with your friends and sing karaoke, stay in your room and decorate and/or go out to different events on campus. Definitely go to the events! There are ALWAYS good prizes like an Ipad, Xbox 360, DVD player, Screen TV, etc (just to name a few).
Food and Dining It is okay. I admire that I get to try something new like sushi, Mexican and even other types of food from extracurricular clubs. I'm telling you freshman, get the constant pass. You will not regret it. You can get in Freeman and Sam's Place (buffet places) for FREE! Despite this, sooner or later, you wouldn't want to eat the food there anymore. You would want something different. So I would advise you to save your flex dollars. Don't spend it all at once. It happens, trust me! Flex dollars can be used in other places and you will always have your hands on different foods. Also, be aware of the events! Most of the time, there are FREE FOOD.
Dorm Life I believe dorm life is the best decision for an incoming freshman. I feel once you dorm here, you will know the entire campus in less than 3 days.
Academic Rigor The course materials are very challenging. I'm sure you heard of the saying Studying is the key to success. It is! Find some way to time manage and study at least 10-15 hours a week (If not more). Trust me once you study, you will see results.
Tips for prospective students Always go to ratemyprofessors.com. Trust me, it is always important to have a background check of your teachers. Not every teacher will teach in a way you would like. Every teacher is different. Also, when you study, find a quiet area. It is really easy to be distracted on campus. There are ALWAYS different events happening each day.
In three sentences Montclair State University (MSU) is a excellent institution for music, theater, education, and psychology majors. You will always find something to do at this MSU. Also, the campus is definitely appealing to the eyes.

Did enjoy being here This university is very close to the city, which makes it a great place to be in when you need to be social. The atmosphere in campus is very easy-going and academic.
Did learn a lot I made it a goal to learn as much as possible at Montclair State University, and the faculty and facilities made it very easy to do so.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Commuters, returning adults, shy or not to social students and students that enjoy a small size classroom
Tips for prospective students If your looking for a college for commuting its a great chose. Other than that its best for college students that enjoy going home on the weekends or doing other things off campus on the weekend because the school is small in population and doesn't have a very big social scene on the weekends. Best option for returning adults and commuter students.
Bang for the buck Although the environment is very well comfortable and nice its basically what your paying for because the continuos construction of the college had drastically increased to tuition. As a biology major it would be nicer to see the college using more money towards improving things such as lab supplies and etc.
Am enjoying being here Even though I enjoy being a college student my financial circumstances and lack of help my staff such as academic advisors and professors has truly hindered my ability to enjoy the college.
Am learning a lot I am currently an biology major at MSU that enjoys being a part of a fairly small college. I have learned so much within my past two years at MSU which I didn't expect from a state college.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Musicians, Artists, Nursing and Medical, Business
Tips for prospective students Know what you want to major in immediately. DO NOT switch majors or be undeclared, they put you through torture.
Bang for the buck It's a state university so it's not the most expensive place out there, but it depends on how much aid you get. Some people get grants and are enrolled in the EOF program where they get a lot of help. However, if you're like me and get nothing and have to take out loans, it's very expensive and hard, but like I said before I really like it here so it's worth it.
Am enjoying being here It's the only reason I am staying here. I get no financial aid and I transferred from a college where I got financial aid, but I wasn't enjoying myself. When I transferred here I loved it, the atmosphere is so different from my previous college. There's always events going on here, the people are friendly, I just love it here.
Am learning a lot For gen-ed classes there is a lot of variety, I have taken some interesting classes and learned a lot of things. There are the occasional duds that you are required to take and then depending on your major, you have to worry about whether your class is even available for the semester. Other than that I can't complain.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students People living at home with parents and commuting.
Bang for the buck Make sure you do everything to get your moneys worth.
What to do for fun Nothing much except maybe attend a sports game.
Food and Dining The food is expensive, but delicious.
Dorm Life I do not live in the dorms, but they bring a run-down look to the campus compared to the nicer surrounding buildings.
Academic Rigor Many of the teachers seem to have good backgrounds in their field.
Tips for prospective students Consider other state schools, because this school costs almost as much as a private school after all of the fees it adds on to your bill.
In three sentences I am only going to this school because it has my graduate program (which is not a common program) and it is driving distance from home, making it an option to go home on weekends. Other than that, I do not like many things about this school. The tuition is outrageously high for being a state school, the parking is terrible, and the hidden fees in the tuition such as the facilities fee makes it not worth it to attend a state school.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus there is a tire swing behind life hall that barely anyone knows about.
What to do for fun montclair state university is very close to new york city and there is a train station right on campus. the trains do not run on the weekends, but you can take a bus to the city or you can take a bus to the local mall or into the town on montclair.
Tips for prospective students on the weekends, many students go home, so if you are dorming and planning on being around for the weekends then find friends that will be here too and bring movies and games. a great way to meet people is to go to the programs and events the first couple weeks of school and join organizations.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck i wish the school offered more opportunities for advancement especially for people with high gpa's.
What to do for fun attend sporting events or programs hosted by community assistants and res life.
Academic Rigor it varies; my major consists of mainly group assignments
Tips for prospective students be sure to complete thorough research for specific major courses and prospective graduation date after you are admitted; you wouldn't want to be stuck here another semester nor year for a silly mistake.
In three sentences montclair state university is a unique school. however, it is not the school i would have chosen if i had the finances. it is very much like a commuter school and most people there are unfriendly.

Bang for the buck montclair was named by forbes as the number one most affordable state college in nj. that speaks for itself.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus open to all commuters, i recommend the commuter lounge. there are leather couches, and a huge tv on the wall.
What to do for fun the campus is a short nj transit ride away from new york, so there is always plenty of opportunities to have fun.
Food and Dining i recommend the rath and cafe diem. they are the best places on campus. the redhawk diner has good food, but there is always a big wait.
Dorm Life i commute, but from what i know of forming from my friends, it's ok.
Academic Rigor i feel that college in general shouldn't be easy, so i gave a 3 star rating. if you slack off like you did at the end of senior year, you will get nowhere. pay attention and do you're work!!!
In three sentences msu is a great school to attend for those who live in or are near northern new jersey. for the area, tuition is cheaper than most schools. i am really happy that i go to montclair state university.

Greek Life there are many chapters at this campus. it's not a big greek school but if you go here and are in a fraternity or sorority, you do become close with your brother or sisters.
Clubs and Activities many clubs even club sports! you can start your own club team as well. there are a lot of events hosted at the recreation center as well as the lounges in the dorms.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus red hawk day in the beginning of the year is always fun.
Bang for the buck the tuition is pretty cheap and you got a lot for your money. basically everything is included in your tuition (laundry, printing, tutoring, writing center...etc.)
What to do for fun there's a lot of club sports, greek life, and there's a town walking distance. you can easily take a bus to the movies or even to the city.
Food and Dining sam's place is new this year so the food is pretty good. red hawk diner is great for a late night meal, it's open 24 hours.
Dorm Life the dorms are brand new besides bohn hall which is the freshman dorm. it still isn't a bad dorm, each room comes with a sink so you don't have to constantly go to the communal bathrooms. it is a suitcase school though but you can make the most out of your experience on the weekends.
Academic Rigor education is great here. class sizes are small so you get more individual attention from the professors.
Tips for prospective students visit the school first.
In three sentences montclair is a great school. majority of the buildings are fairly new. the teachers are great with individual attention.

Categories Comments Campus Safety MSU has a University Police Department located on campus with over 30 active officers on staff. We also have the blue-light system that connects students to the police via safety phones located all over campus.
Greek Life We have 30+ greek organizations
Clubs and Activities MSU has over 100+ clubs and organizations for you to get involved in and lots of opportunities for campus employment!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Montclair State University is the only school in the country with a full-fledged 24-hour diner on campus!
What to do for fun There is always something to do! CSI (center for student involvement) works with the clubs and organizations to put together some awesome events including 3D movie screenings, Broadway trips, laser tag trips, talent shows, trivia bowls, etc.
Food and Dining They just built a new dining hall that's awesome, but the other dining hall is really hit or miss (usually miss).
Dorm Life It gets kind of lonely on the weekends, but that's when you use the shuttle service to Clifton Commons or take a day trip to NYC!
Academic Rigor I am part of the Honors College at MSU and the first few honors classes are pretty literature heavy, so get ready for that. They get easier as you get used to the work load and create a shedule for yourself.
Tips for prospective students Join clubs!! It's a great way for you to get involved on campus and make friends!
In three sentences Montclair has a beautiful campus, which is constantly growing and improving. There are always events going on through CSI (center for student involvement) and the Rec Center. Because the campus offers shuttles around the town and NJ transit buses travel to NYC ever day, there is always something to do!

Categories Comments What to do for fun Not much
Food and Dining Horrible-no stars, no healthy food, very few options.
Dorm Life It's what you make of it.
Academic Rigor It's what you make of it, some professors are generally too much of a joke.
Tips for prospective students Prepare to be ripped off at every corner when it comes to food, book supplies, and dues.
In three sentences As the university grows, it seems less equipped to handle its debt and embarks it more and more on its students. The members of Montclair State are generally kind, warm-hearted people. Unfortunately, if it were not for the current economic climate, Montclair State would have less students since it is the best option of a bad situation.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I definitely feel safe on campus. They have their own police station!
Greek Life Greek life is huge at Montclair! So many people are in it and so many people rush every semester.
Clubs and Activities There are so many clubs and activities to chose from and if the one you want is not there you can create it!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is an ice skating rink on campus!!
Bang for the buck Montclair State University is definitely more affordable and is saving me money! And I am still getting the best education I can for my major.
What to do for fun There is a lot to do for fun. There is an ice skating rink on campus. There is the recreation center with a pool, basketball courts, and racquet ball courts. There is even guitar hero! There are also many clubs and organizations. Greek life is huge!!
Food and Dining Overall the food and dining on campus is pretty good. There is a pizza place, a sushi place, and even a diner. Then you have a few small shops, two dining halls, and a cafeteria. Maybe not the healthiest in the world but definitely could be worse.
Dorm Life Unfortunately I do not dorm so I cannot provide much feedback. Freshman get stuck in Bohn Hall which is huge and and older building so they are not the nicest dorms. There are the Heights which are new dorms for upperclassman. There are also off campus villas which are for upperclassman as well.
Academic Rigor Certain professor require more time spent on work than others. Make sure you look into every professor for the classes you want to take because every class is different. The demand in one class might not be the same in another.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you know get as many of your general requirements out of the way freshman and sophomore year because after that you are solely focusing on your major requirements.
In three sentences Overall Montclair State University provides students with a healthy learning environment. They provide knowledgeable professors in their field of study. They also provide a well balanced of social life along with academic studies.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There have been recent hate crimes on campus and the police was affluent for one day and then were never seen again. You do see the police all around, but besides that nothing happens here.
Greek Life As I said, its not that advertised so you have to look for yourself. Once you rush, its such a great experience. Just find a Greek or someone wearing letters to start your search.
Clubs and Activities There's not that much advertising but once you know about them, they certainly make themselves known to you
Great for these types of students Artsy, friendly, outgoing, any really, not so good for the easily homesick
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus I don't any traditions besides being able to sleep anywhere you please. An unusual location would probably be Bohn Hall its pretty much deserted.
Bang for the buck Its a good education and good living space, but tuition is rising and fees are being applied everywhere raising the cost of living
What to do for fun Join clubs, there's always something, hang out with friends, or go off campus
Food and Dining Honestly the Sushi Place and Sam's place is the only place decent for food.
Dorm Life I haven't lived on Campus but I've slept over my friends dorm it was very comfortable.
Academic Rigor It also depends on the classes you take, but normally they are pretty good and you will get an A if you do all of your assignments
Tips for prospective students Make sure to do all of your financial aid on time and make sure its complete, don't depend on prospective amounts of aid
In three sentences Diverse social groups. Interesting classes. Large Campus.

Categories Comments Campus Safety campus is pretty safe on it's own. We are up on a mountain so no one really comes up to bother us. We do have police presence on campus and they are always protroling. We also have a safety gardian application (you can download or it is a text system for non-smart phones) The way it works is lets say you are leaving the library late at night, you set the timer to seven minuets (the average time it takes to get anywhere on campus) you hit start and walk back to your dorm. When you get to your dorm you turn off the timer, however if seven mins. are up and you do not hit the off button they will send a police car to find you (through GPS). Overall we are a very safe campus as long as you are smart.
Greek Life Greek life is very prevalent on campus although we do not have houses on campus. The greeks are always running some sort of activity or program on our campus, they do help to provided for the school community. Again it is what you make of it. Many people are involved in Greek life, but many are also not so there is no real pressure to join unless you want to.
Clubs and Activities MSU has so many different clubs and activities that are offered, we have numerous intermeral sports, and there is always a club to join. We have a variety of cultural and religious clubs, Newman catholic, Hillel,MSA, Web of Life, and several other. We have Indian culture club,LASO,Russian club,Haitian Club, ect. We also have a history club, Japan club, Gamers, Fencing club, Bio club, Fashion club, Pep band, psychology club, Community service. If you are interested in something MSU has it for you, and if not you are able to create your own club !
Great for these types of students -MSU is known for the Education program (25th in the country and 10th for their doctorate program) It is extremely competitive. - We are also known for our theatre department. -we are also known for our school of business If you are an artsy person or a lover of the arts of any kind then MSU is the place for you ! But we are not a hippie school I promise ! Also if you are looking to go into education you will fit right in ! MSU is really right for anyone we have such a diverse student body there is room and acceptance for everyone.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We have an amphitheater on campus, along with a diner. We have worlds fair day where all of the clubs come together and put up booths to share food of their cultures. I am sure we have more I just cannot think of any.
Bang for the buck Montclair is on the cheaper side of public schools in NJ. The heights because they are new are very expensive so don't feel pressure to live there if you want to save money. You pay for what you get so make the most of it !
What to do for fun What we do for fun at MSU is get involved ! there are over a hundred different clubs from the Players theatre company, to Japan club. There is always something to do at MSU. As a student you are emailed on friday in the loop which tells you of all of the events for that week. You could also walk into montclair and see a show in the movie theatre or eat off campus.
Food and Dining MSU currently has two residential dinning halls and one in the student center. We also have a pizza place,a sushi bar, the Red Hawk diner, Einstein bagels, and Cafe Diem. We also have a convenient store. Sam's place is the new dinning hall in the Heights and the quality of food is amazing. In Sam's there are different stations, vegetarian/vegan,grill, Italian style food, sandwich bar,and cultural food..
Dorm Life MSU is trying to improve the quality of dorm life. They have just completed The Heights, a new complex housing over 2,000 students in both single and double style rooms. It is am an amazing building to live in. They always have something to do over the weekends and there is a shuttle that you take to go into town on the weekends. Although there is still room for improvement MSU is rising to the occasion.
Academic Rigor Academics by far are MSU's strong point, I am going to be a junior next semester and I have yet to be in a lecture hall. Even freshmen classes such as writing 105/106(commonly know as expos) there were only 20 students in my class. Most professors are experience and willing to help you in any way that they can.
Tips for prospective students -don't be afraid to live on campus ! although we have a reputation for being a commuter school, they are trying very hard to change this image with things to do every weekend ! -LIVE IN BOHN. The only freshmen dorm on campus I promise it is worth the experience. - go see your advisers, you will have at least two your freshmen year go see them. -Don't be afraid to stay on campus on the weekends, that is how you make your friends. -MSU is what you make of it, it is the best of both worlds you can have a small family community school or a large no one knows you environment. it all depends on what you want - get involved ! MSU has something for everyone
In three sentences the quality of education is superior by far compared to other schools. There is always an adviser who is willing and able to help you when you need it most. MSU is best known for it's theatre, education and business programs.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is a police station right on campus. There is also a volunteer squad and they can always be seen riding around patrolling the campus. If you are walking late at night from the library to your dorm you can call a number from the location you are leaving and leave a message saying I am leaving so and so area and expect to get to my destination in x amount of minutes. If you don't call the number back in x amount of minutes then campus police start looking for you to make sure nothing happened. Cool huh
Clubs and Activities There are many clubs and activities that go on. There are special field trips for just students. The only thing is these are announced via flyers on walls or by email and not many students get to see the flyers let alone check their email so many of these opportunities are missed.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is this area in the middle of campus where it's this square area surrounded by a few steps on each side. There is usually something going on in this area, from kids playing soccer to having relay races and barbecues.
Bang for the buck Any college is going to be pretty expensive. Financial aid pays for most of my tuition and the rest I pay with loans. However over all I think it is very worth it.
What to do for fun There are always events going on in Montclair. You can sign up for email alerts and every week you get a list of all the events that are going on from Monday through Saturday. They give away free food at least once a week so that you could stay and listen to live literature or people playing instruments.
Food and Dining The food in the dining halls are alright. They are kind of fattening but you also have other choices. However there is also a diner and many coffee shops and they have a number of tasty dishes to pick from.
Dorm Life If you are social, you will have a good time living on campus. Every one here is so friendly and they all look for fun things to do when not worrying about their classes. However if you are not social and have problems talking to new people, then housing is not for you. I like living on campus because everything is there for you. I can wake up 10 minutes before class and still get there on time.
Academic Rigor Just know that MSU is not like high school. You will not be able to pull off all nighters and read 5 chapters in just one night and expect to get a B. Basically just review every day and go to class. I do not think the classes here are too hard, you just have to do the work.
Tips for prospective students Makes sure to talk to your counselors and make a four year plan of all the classes that you have to take. Also, in the first week of classes, make sure to ask your professor what kind of exams he gives, is it multiple choice is it short answer, is it critical thinking. In college what matters is for you to pass the three exams that they give every semester.
In three sentences Montclair State University is a University that provides its students with basically everything they need. There is housing available and a number of places to get a quick snack late at night after hours of studying. Their library is open 24/5 and there is always a quiet place to cozy up to a book or study for finals.

Categories Comments Campus Safety If there is a problem, the campus police are very quick to take care of it.
Greek Life There are many types of fraternities and sororities for students to choose from. There is a week were all these groups try to extend a hand to other people to join. They also have many signs around campus.
Clubs and Activities There are clubs and activities for everyone in Montclair. A student just needs to widen their eyes and see the possibilities that these clubs offer. And when i say widen their eyes, look out for emails and signs.
Great for these types of students It doesn't matter what type of student you are. If you live on campus or if your a commuter, a student should try to get involved with their school. I say this because a student gets more for what they pay for, meet new people and it will look good on a resume.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus An unusual location is the quad by the student center. Here is where many students play music, recite their poems, hold rallies and do other activities.
Bang for the buck Montclair has a lot to offer. They have an amazing gym that over looks the New York City skyline and many concerts that are free for students to attend.
What to do for fun Montclair University holds a lot of activities for students to attend. They hold concerts and comedy shows. They also have many clubs for students to choose from.
Food and Dining Food is over priced, but what college isn't. My friends and I tend to get sushi that is made fresh on campus.
Dorm Life I live in the Village (on-campus apartments). Its very nice because not a lot of people are loud. It seems as though a lot of people who live here are done with the partying stage in their life.
Academic Rigor I am a Communication Major and the course work is difficult. However, over time it is something one gets used to. Once a student declares a major, they will start to see familiar faces in their classes.
Tips for prospective students Tips for Montclair students: Do not procrastinate, Check your email before class, Have a planner, Join clubs, Always email advisor, Don't always listen to advisor(ask multiple people for advice), Declare major as fast as you can.
In three sentences Montclair State University is an expanding university for upcoming students who are in Education, Communication and much more. The university has amazing clubs and activities for everyone. Each year they hold a concert and comedy show of our choice.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There are always a bunch of activities they even throw concerts as a club theme no drinking obviously last semester they brought Jason Derulo and this semester they're bringing LMFAO & some other people I forgot there is ALWAYS something to do here you just need to get active
Food and Dining I do not like the food here. I mean it's not horrible it's just not me. Im a healthy eater and finding something healthy is pretty hard. they do brew starbucks at the cafe which is AMAZING to me because I love their coffee
Dorm Life I don't dorm but I hear it's ok here. I don't have much knowledge to speak in regards to this topic
Academic Rigor It's not so bad here it's definitely not worthy of 5 stars but 3 pretty much covers it. Rate my professor is going to be your best friend. If the professor stinks you're in for it!
Tips for prospective students Majority of students here are in the humanities major. If you're interested in business I'd suggest you take two years here and transfer to a school that is well known for their business program. The teaching program here is amazing, i hear. I don't know much about the science field
In three sentences The campus is really nice and it feels like you're in a town, not school. Registration process is a pain.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are police stationed around campus at all times.
Clubs and Activities Very active Greek Life, SGA, and performing opportunities (play, dance, opera, choir, band...)
Bang for the buck For a state school, Montclair is a great university with some usual political issues that every university faces.
What to do for fun New York City is 30 minutes away by car and about 45min-hour by public transportation. There are a lot campus activities throughout the day and night to keep commuters and residents happy.
Food and Dining There are a few places on campus to get food. The dining halls in the dorms are definitely not a first choice when wanting to get food but it is not absolutely horrid. Cafe Diem and Einstein's Bagels are two little cafes on campus and actually serve really good food if you don't mind shelling out a few extra dollars. The Student Center has a little convenience store, a dining room that serves very good food but also a little expensive, and the main cafeteria with various choices of food. Overall, the campus has food to eat and some places are better than others but I've had worse college food in other universities.
Dorm Life The dorms on campus aren't the best around. The Village which is the off-campus apartments given to upperclassmen are actually quite nice.
Academic Rigor I believe some classes are more rigorous at this university compared to others. However, with most of experience there is always someone to help you whether it is the professor or tutor.
Tips for prospective students Visit the campus yourself to see if you like the environment. Also, set up a tour with a student of your prospective major to get a feel for the department. You can't get a real feel for the campus through the group tours given.
In three sentences A very close-knit community of students and faculty. Many opportunities given to students on campus, in the community, and abroad. It is a beautiful campus.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I don't feel unsafe walking on campus at night, but after some hate crimes were committed this year, things definitely got scary. Google it, what happened was horrible. But I was really proud of the way we (the students) handled it. We had a rally and I know that my friends and I would walk our gay friends to class just to make sure everything was okay.
Greek Life I'm not in one of the SGA approved sororities, but I am in Sigma Alpha Iota, which is a fabulous female-fraternity for music lovers and musician. So I love it.
Clubs and Activities There are a ton of clubs, there's one for everything. If there isn't, it's super-easy to start one, and there are always people who will support you and join.
Great for these types of students Music majors, people from New Jersey, people who want to experience diversity,
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There's a late-night bistro in the Heights that sells cheese fries and other fattening treats all night long. Also, the Red Hawk diner is opened all night, and Café Diem.
Bang for the buck I feel you really get a lot for your money here. The professors I've had have all been fabulous. The dorms are super big and really nice. The food is pretty edible, which is rare for college campuses. And the school itself is pretty affordable.
What to do for fun Well, besides Barstool getting shut down, there are definitely things to do off campus. The campus is pretty dead on weekends, but there's the Wellmont in town and NYC is so close. It's like 2.50 to get into the city by bus. And the Willowbrook mall is just a bus ride away. Also, there's a shuttle on Saturday that goes to Clifton Commons for free. And of course, there are always performances at Kasser or Memorial (we just had Lewis Black come here). There are a lot of great things to do for fun, but if you stay locked away in your room, you'll probably miss out on all of it.
Food and Dining Sodexo is pretty decent; sometimes the food is great, sometimes it's mediocre. But overall it's good. There's a menu online so you can see what's going to be served on any given day. And next year, (allegedly) there's going to be a Dunkin Donuts, Taco Bell, Quik Chek, and something else (I can't remember) on campus in Blanton. But don't tell anyone! Shhhhh!
Dorm Life The Heights are gorgeous, and now that Bohn is being taken offline for next year, there won't be a single bad place to live on campus. I loved my first year (in Machuga, Clara Barton). But really, it's all about who you live with and whether or not you get along with your roommate.
Academic Rigor I've found music classes to be pretty challenging. But how interesting/challenging a course is completely depends on which professor you have.
Tips for prospective students Don't eat the eggchiladas at Freeman, join the honors program if you can, meet as many people as you can the first week, go to events for about a month until you figure out what kind of clubs/events you like best, try and meet people from other majors,
In three sentences Montclair State University is a wholly underrated school. Sure, it doesn't have the best reputation, but I can honestly say that in my first year here, I have never felt more at home. If you're looking for a great music school for a reasonable price, check out Montclair, it really is fabulous.

Food and Dining College food is a bit of an oxymoron as many students will tell you. However, I have found that college food is not so bad! Keep in mind to make health choices!
Dorm Life I dormed at the University of Massachusetts for one semester. While it was fun, I wasn't able to balance my social and academic life. Make sure that you are ready to dorm! Don't waste the money if you know you are going to do the least work possible to pass a class!
Academic Rigor Before being accepted to Montclair State University, I attended my local community college. The workload is more difficult and for some subjects, more tedious. However, if you try your best to NOT PROCRASTINATE and keep yourself organize, you will succeed! Just put in the work to get that 4.0!
Tips for prospective students Financial aid is very important to many students. It can mean a life time of savings! My tip to all prospective students would be to make sure to complete your FASFA on time and to submit any documentations colleges/universities are asking for as soon as possible. This way, you can plan according!

You can watch a game or join one even if you have no idea how to play. It is a great way to make new friends. Go to the gym and join a yoga class or take a dip in the pool. They are making improvements and has already started getting better. And campus is not the only place to eat; less than a mile down the road in town are great restaurants. You will not go hungry.
Dorm Life Living on campus is a completely new way of living. You can meet new people and find new and exciting interests. It allows you to stay involved on campus. It helps you become independent and opens a whole new side of life you never knew was there.
Academic Rigor Classes are intellectually challenging. The open your eyes to see a new way to look at the subject matter. The work is not impossible but does require self discipline. But just because classes keep you working, does not mean they are not enjoyable.

Categories Comments Campus Safety We have a police station on campus with our own police officers that patrol the campus.
Greek Life Not involved with Greek Life so I know very little about it, but from what I hear we have excellent and not so excellent choices.
Clubs and Activities If you like it then it is probably a club, and if not then you are allowed to create it.
Great for these types of students Students of all types would love MSU because we pride ourselves on community and in a community as big as MSU there is space for all types of students.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Not personally.
Bang for the buck From dining halls, Dormitories, recreational center, pools, and extracurricular actives and to quality professors and academics I made the right choice with MSU.
What to do for fun The Rec Center is my favorite place to be, whether it be exercising, running in our indoor track or playing basketball, table tennis or racquet ball. There is always something to do here and membership is included in tuition so its free to use (so to speak). There are a large assortment of clubs and sports to join, as well as cabs, trains and buses to take you to the city or any mall you want to go.
Food and Dining Many places to eat, only two dinning halls that take constant pass dining option but credit/debit excepted at a wide variety of places.
Dorm Life No curfew, staff is very friendly, strict on the things that keep you safe which is a plus. Dorms kept in great shape.
Academic Rigor There is a large amount of adjunct professors that teach at NYU and other colleges. Most professors are extremely knowledgeable in their respective fields and know how to transfer their knowledge to you the student.
Tips for prospective students Come prepared to work, but also lean when to take a break. montclair has a wide assortment of ways to get involved in our various clubs and sports.
In three sentences Montclair State has a fantastic selection of extracurricular activities. As well as housing options and major/minors.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus has official police patrolling the university and the emergency phones are everywhere. They even have their own number that directly contacts the campus police.
Greek Life I'm not very much into Greek life but Montclair has many Greek groups to be apart of.
Clubs and Activities Montclair provides for the students with its' many activities and clubs. They want all the students to have a sense of belonging to something of their personality.
Great for these types of students There is everything you can imagine for every type of student. You are even able to grab a bunch of friends and start a new club or create a new activity. The opportunities are endless.
What to do for fun What I love most about Montclair is the many activities they have for all the students that attend. They have many clubs and group activities for both dorming and commuting students. Such activities include karaoke, movie day, and so much more. This is the main reason that Montclair has such a diverse community.
Food and Dining The university has a wide variety of food in their cafeteria and also have a couple of diners, such as the Red Hawk Diner, throughout the whole campus. I guarantee I won't starve throughout college.
Dorm Life Montclair has so many options for living on campus. I myself am not dorming but I've noticed the many opportunities they offer. The same goes for their commuting students.
Academic Rigor Montclair is very on point with what students need to accomplish and want nothing more than for every student to succeed to his or her best ability.
Tips for prospective students The information that the university gives is very informative and important so I would suggest paying very close attention and even write things down.
In three sentences I've been to the campus a couple of times and each time makes me even more excited to attend there. The faculty and current students are extremely friendly. The university provides incoming students with elaborate and helpful information which makes it easier for my first year of college.

Categories Comments Campus Safety 4/5, MSU does it's best being that it is the 2nd largest university in the state it is not possible to keep everyone 100% safe and undercontrol.
Greek Life 38 fraternities and Sororities to choose from!
Clubs and Activities 5/5 there is something for everyone! There are well over 40 clubs at MSU, ranging from cultural clubs, fashion club, acting, dance team, etc.
Great for these types of students MSU is not for a specific type of student, it's what the student makes of it, which is why it's important for any new college student to go in with an open mind.
What to do for fun There is Recreation center, with gym, pool, and different types of events always going one like The Price is Right by S.L.A.M (Student life at Montclair). SLAM also provides red hawk night where there all types of game and prizes given away.
Food and Dining 4/5, just because it isn't a 5 star restaurant but being that it is school, you have a lot of options.
Dorm Life I'd give MSU a 4/5, they give you the opportunity to choose if it is available and you are in good standing academically you might get what you want.
Academic Rigor I'd give MSU a 3 out of 5 for rigor. It really depends on your major.
Tips for prospective students Get involved! There are so many Organizations to choose from including Fraternities and Sororities. Either of these are great for networking, and gives you a great experience while working with others as a team.
In three sentences Montclair is great place to meet new people from all backgrounds. They are versatile from the students, staff, and the major and minors they offer. One of the most important things to me, is that classrooms for the most part are small, which give the students the comfort of asking questions and participating in class.

Food and Dining The dining is excellent! There are so many places to eat on campus.
Dorm Life I only give dorm life a two because my roommate and I are not close at all.
Academic Rigor Montclair State has a very rigorous first year writing program.
Tips for prospective students The tip I would have for prospective students is if you are majoring in the sciences such as chemistry, biochemistry, or molecular biology then this is the school for you. Especially if the student is a minority, there is a supportive program, The Health Careers Program, that will help that individual get into medical schools.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Everywhere you turn you see a campus cop. There has never been a concern with my safety on campus.
Greek Life I have not been involved in Greek Life
Clubs and Activities There are so many clubs and activities to choose from on campus so there is never not a reason to not be involved.
What to do for fun Go into town, there are free shuttles Hangout in the lobby of your dorm with friends There are trains into the city so going into the city is an option
Food and Dining The food in Sam's Place is very good, there are a lot of options but in my opinion it gets kind of old. The Bistro and the Diner are the best for late night food cravings, but they do cost money. Freeman Dining hall is my favorite but it is out of the way for me to go to all the time. In my opinion, the food is more fresh there and you get a better choice at what you want to eat that day.
Dorm Life The Heights at Montclair are beautiful. It's almost like you are living in a hotel room. There is a shower, and a bathroom inside your room. You also have the choice of choosing your room mate and if you don't they pair you up really well.
Academic Rigor Four stars
Tips for prospective students Dress warm because it is cold on the mountain, stay on task and stay on top of things, always check your email and email your teachers to stay updated with class.
In three sentences Montclair's staff is extremely helpful and keeps me on track. The professor's are considering to student's lives and help them be successful. Montclair would definitely be an 8 on a scale of 1-10, i'm happy with where I have chose to go to college.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There is a recreation center with a stretching room, basketball court, swimming pool, ping-pong table, and even an enclosed tennis room. If sports aren't your thing, there are a couple tv's with gaming consoles hooked up to them. I recently saw several students playing dance dance revolution for the xbox kinect. They were dancing against each other and the moves they were doing were hilarious.
Food and Dining The on-campus diner is great! It feels as if all the waiters are a big family and they're always kind to me. I feel comfortable eating there from the moment that I enter.
Dorm Life I don't dorm at the college. Even though I've heard negative things about dorming at Montclair, I've taken the transit buses around campus and it's really not that bad if everything is done on time.
Academic Rigor Teachers really know their stuff when it comes to the subject they teach. However it feels as if they're rushing to get through the lesson and that makes it appear less hands-on.
Tips for prospective students Know what classes you should take before enrolling. Make sure that if you are transferring that the courses you took at a prior college will transfer into Montclair.
In three sentences Montclair State University is a huge campus with many students that show their pride for the college. Every day, special events are held to either raise money or keep the spirit of the Red Hawks alive and thriving. The teachers are easy to talk to and really seem to know what about the subjects that they teach.

Food and Dining Good amount of places to eat, just wish more were open 24 hours for students who study late.
Dorm Life Friendly dorm life. Great neighbors and a ton of activities for students every day of the week during every time.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Montclair has its own police department on campus with its own K-9 dog unit. They are not hesitant to tolerate the illegal activities of students and will press the maximum charges on students if the acts are committed.
Greek Life Montclair offers an introductory to humanities class and many more Ancient Greek classes that are available to all students. A unique insight on the background and history of Ancient Greece.
Clubs and Activities Soccer, rugby, basketball, chess, and many other unique and fun clubs are available to all students as long as they sign up before the deadline.
Great for these types of students Study groups and extra given classes who want to get ahead in the classroom. The extra help can be vital between passing and failing.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Red Hawk Diner is a popular area for students to hang out and always hang with friends no matter what time of day it is.
What to do for fun You can always visit the student recreation center if you want to swim, play basketball, or get a simple workout and many other things as well. The Sprague library is a great place for students to study and do homework in between classes. Montclair offers a variety of places including the Student Center which is for students to relax and sit down.
Food and Dining The dining Hall at Sam's place is fantastic. They have variety of foods all throughout the morning, afternoon, and night. As well as the Red Hawk Diner which is open late night where you can find many college students getting a bite to eat.
Dorm Life The dorm life is tremendous. The outside of the dorm halls are designed in a Spanish missionary type style. Dorm rooms are for two people and provide a great experience for all dorming students.
Academic Rigor You may have to push yourself beyond what is easy. But it will be thatb much more rewarding at the end of the day. A great education and a degree.
Tips for prospective students Be ready to learn and seize your opportunity in the classroom for your intended major/ degree.
In three sentences Montclair State University is a live and well rounded school. It offers degrees of all types to people of all types as the mixed nationalities on campus and classrooms is something amazing. A great environment to earn a degree and to explore your knowledge.

Academic Rigor Your grades are very important at MSU. You have to maintain a certain GPA in order to stay at MSU depending on your degree and if you are a graduate or undergraduate.
Tips for prospective students When you attend your first day of classes it is is best to come prepared and ready to learn. Categories Comments Campus Safety When it comes to campus Safety, they are very serious about it. They do have strict policies (just like any university should have) to ensure that each student feels safe. If something does happen at the university they immediately solve the situation which means that you can go to Montclair knowing that you will feel safe and be safe. Don't be hesitant and go to them if you see anything suspicious or if you are going through something because at the end of the day your safety matters. Think about it, if one student is safe from harm then that means the rest of the students are safe also.
What to do for fun There are numerous of things to do. There are many clubs and organizations that you can join such as SGA (Student Government Association), LASO (Latin American Student Organization), Sororities and Fraternities such as Lambda Theta Alpha. There are just so many things that you can explore and take advantage of. Just like any college parties do happen. It is best to balance you work life from your social life. It is best to go to parties when you have free time not when it would interfere with you school work but other than that, if u plan to come to Montclair, enjoy your college experience.
Food and Dining The food at Montclair is OK. When you are dorming I advise you to avoid the Freshman 15 which is where many first-year students gain 15 pounds once they start college. There are dining halls such as Carpe Diem and Sam's Place. The food is pretty delicious so therefore, be wise and live a healthy life style.
Dorm Life Even though I am a commuter, I rated 4 stars for dorm life because I have heard from many students that they enjoy the dorm life and after a while, they have gotten use to it.
Academic Rigor Depending on the professors you have will dictate your experience within the classroom but most of the professors are great at what they do. The academics are also pretty challenging.
Tips for prospective students Those who are planning to attend Montclair, there are many opportunities available and events are constantly going on.Therefore seize the opportunities, socialize, and try to enjoy college as much as possible. I know during my first semester, I have meet some great unique and talented individuals.
In three sentences As a current student at Montclair State University I can honestly say that the people there are friendly and welcoming. They will assist you in whatever it is that you need help with such as financial issues, scheduling for your classes and many more. Those who are into the arts this is the college for you however, the university does offer several programs and has many majors and minors that you can chose from.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus is very safe and located in a more wealthy area of Essex county.
Clubs and Activities There's a club for just about everything here at MSU. There are numerous greek organizations, science clubs, ethnic clubs, a GLBT club, as well as various religious and secular organizations.
Great for these types of students Music and theater majors, microbiology and environmental science, and education majors.
Bang for the buck MSU is, undoubtedly, a great value for the level of education and research opportunities present.
What to do for fun The campus has a train connection to take you most places, and the campus is about 20 minutes from NYC. There are parties on campus almost every weekend, as well as outdoor dance events every year/semester. For a great show, visit the Kasser Theater (where students get one free ticket to every show).
Food and Dining Although the quality of the food is pretty average, the costs of food are fairly high compared to surrounding businesses. Take advantage of the Student Center convenience store, which serves the best coffee on campus for a cheap price (as well as inexpensive sandwiches).
Dorm Life The University built 4 new residence halls called the Heights about a year ago. They are modern, clean and beautiful from the outside.
Academic Rigor The University prides itself on the academics present here. Most professors carry the highest degree possible in their field, and are constantly involved in field research.
Tips for prospective students Take advantage of all of the freebies (food, concerts, shows, etc.) while on campus. Use the library as much as you can for studying and reading. If you're planning to commute, grab a locker as soon as you can!
In three sentences Beautiful location and campus, great student body and caring faculty, excellent research opportunities. Montclair State is a great value for the quality education that you receive here. Categories Comments Campus Safety There have been many cases within the last few years but overall the campus police do their job to quickly resolve the cases in a safe manner with out interrupting classes.
Greek Life The Greek Life is not up to date on this campus. They have brothers and sisters who do not know what they are doing. One reason for this, is because they do not have proper guidance nor these are truly respected sororities or fraternities worldwide.
Clubs and Activities Even though this school has many clubs and activities they really are not enough to cover all the different types of people that this campus holds. The clubs seem to be for the type of people who are outcasts and need a place to meet with other outcasts.
Great for these types of students This school is great for people who are willing to go out their and make friends. Also it is great for people who are willing to not spend a lot on a State University and get a true college experience.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Any unusual locations on campus that I was surprised to see was the commuter lounge. This is a place designated for commuters to hang out between classes and enjoy a place to stay while they wait for their next class to start.
Bang for the buck Even if you commute or dorm this school is a State University and for the little amount of money one pays for tuition it has to be the number one in the state.
What to do for fun That is the question that you will ask yourself on a Friday night after classes and find your self staying in. On the campus it self there is not much of the fun and party life. For all of those who like to party, you would need to go to the clubs around the school, like Patterson.
Food and Dining They have many different options when it comes to food. There food overall is good for the price. The only overpriced place on campus is the sushi bar and the Hawk diner.
Dorm Life The dorm life it great but it does not have programs that forces students to interactive with one another. Overall you could go your whole school career in your dorm and make not one friend.
Academic Rigor At times it could be more difficult and challenging. Of course the 100 level classes are one of the easiest classes but when it comes to 300 level classes it becomes way more difficult.
Tips for prospective students The ones that I could give is to make many friends and join the different clubs that they have. That is one way of getting your voice heard to different crowds of people.
In three sentences Montclair State University is a very well diverse university that has different types of people on its campus. It tends to be a commuter school, but it has a great dorm life experience. When it comes to professors and classes this university has a wide range of options to choose from.

Food and Dining They have dining options for all hours of the day. Many different types of food for different eating preferences.
Dorm Life The buildings are wonderful. Most of them are brand new which is great. There is plenty of space and it is always clean.
Academic Rigor I expect it to be more difficult with each passing semester. Students are here to learn and professors expect participation and completion of assignments.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you are prepared for mid-terms. They always seem to sneak up on students, including me. Get involved in as many activities as you can. Go on some of the fun trips provided. I went white water rafting and I loved it!

What to do for fun I snow board and college is less than an hour from vernon valley. Close to malls. Many restaurants
Food and Dining Not wonderful.
Dorm Life Over crowded. RAs serve no real purpose at Montclair.
Academic Rigor The nursing classes are rigorous. Other classes and requirements not so much
Tips for prospective students Live off campus. There are lots of apartments in the area. Food in the cafeteria is not so great either. Signing up for classes isn't really fair- I waited up til midnite the day I could register and was not able to get the courses at the times i wanted nor was i able to get signed into the classes by an advisor.

Categories Comments Campus Safety It has gotten better over the last year, but honestly campus police seems more concerned with pulling over people who are speeding than making rounds in the buildings and monitoring other areas.
Greek Life We have professional and social Greek organizations. Greek Life isn't huge, but it is a large part of campus, and they do hold many of the programs and activities that go on.
Clubs and Activities There are a ton of things to get involved with, but like I said you need to go out and look for what interests you.
Great for these types of students You need to be outgoing and willing to meet new people. Everyone here is so diverse, so you need to be open to that.
Bang for the buck There is a lot of construction going on to better the campus, but right now it's more of an annoyance than a help. When it's done it will look great, but right now, it looks terrible.
What to do for fun There are a lot of programs going on throughout the day/ week. Community assistants in the resident halls are always having programs as well as all the student government organizations and Greek life. You cant just sit around and expect fun to come to you. You need to walk around, read flyers and check your e-mails.
Food and Dining From what I have tried, I have come to the conclusion that it really depends where you decide to get food from on campus that makes all the difference. The dining halls are less appealing than the other places on campus (diner, sub connection & Guy Fieri on Campus). You need to search around for what you will enjoy.
Dorm Life I have never lived in their dorms, but I have been to them. The new buildings are immaculate, and I know that many other res halls are in the process of being renovated.
Academic Rigor The program I am in (Dual Degree/ Dual Certification Special Education Masters Program) is very work intensive. They expect your highest academic ability to be channeled into your work. Professors are constantly pushing you to be your best and learn as much practical and essential information as possible so you may utilize it in your everyday life.
Tips for prospective students Talk to a student who is currently in the program you are interested in (and fully immersed into the core classes), and talk to them. Knowing how other real life students feel about what is offered can help you make the best decision.
In three sentences The school has an enormous amount of programs, and many that are up and coming. However, it is as if the administration does not fine tune the programs until they have been around for a few semesters. The school should try to get more feedback form its current students in those programs.

Greek Life I am part of Alpha Lambda Delta, a National Honors Society for First Year Students. I just recently joined it, and I would suggest for others with a good GPA to join it.
Clubs and Activities I am a part of Rhythm Nation Dance Club. I enjoy going, and I would like others to partake in it too. The Club meets twice a week, and it is a great way to keep in shape and to have fun.
Food and Dining I go to Sam's Place on campus because it is located very close to me, and I would suggest it as a good dining place for others to eat at. The employees are friendly, and for the most part, the place is clean to eat at.
Dorm Life I like living on campus because it gives me an opportunity to run into more students that are in my classes. However, it is difficult to adjust to living with a roommate. The only thing I can suggest is to seek out the Community Adviser if you are having any problems.
Academic Rigor I am currently in good academic standing. This is a title that students who are not failing their courses receive. Understanding the material you learn is a key to doing well in college. Because keeping up your grades is important, seek out teachers or other classmates if you need help.
Tips for prospective students Go to class, and sit in the front since it is beneficial. The teacher will know who you are, and if you show that you are taking an interest in the class, the professor will be more understanding rather than you not bothering to show at all. Make sure you do the homework because it is very important and a key to doing well in college.
In three sentences Montclair State University is a place where you can meet people from all different ethnic backgrounds who are willing to tell you about their different experiences. It is a good place since the teachers are willing to help you, and I am very pleased with this school.

Great for these types of students Performing Arts and Education majors.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We have our very own Guy Fieri restaurant on campus that just opened in the fall of 2012, Guy himself even came to sign autographs!
Bang for the buck As an out-of-state student, I find the tuition to be a bit pricy for a public institution. However, if you live in New Jersey, it is very reasonable price-wise.
What to do for fun There are many different student organizations to get involved in at MSU. As for specific activities, the events calendar is always full with activities ranging from movie nights to paintball trips to our own Price is Right game show night complete with prizes! MSU loves giving away free stuff!

Academic Rigor The academics here at Montclair State are much like any other school, it all depends on the professor you have. Some classes are lacking academically and others that enrich my knowledge greatly.
Tips for prospective students If you are planning on entering the theatre department, be vigorous in your contact with the faculty, they tend to be difficult to get in touch with via email.
In three sentences Montclair State University is in a great location, both on campus and its close proximity to New York City. This school has a very active student body with many events happening on campus daily. The Greek life can be a bit suffocating at times, as it is very sorority and fraternity heavy.

Food and Dining The dining halls connected to our dorms are really very good. It obviously won't compare to a homemade meal by your parents, but it's definitely up there. The staff is so fun and talkative. There's food almost everywhere and with so many different options.
Dorm Life Dorm life is absolutely amazing. I'm so thankful for the friends I met my first year. Montclair is smart with housing and separate the halls by grade so freshman can make new friends. The dorms have rules to follow by for safety but other than that you have complete freedom.
Academic Rigor Our school is average with their academic rigor. There are many different resources to help succeed, so it seems impossible to do terrible.
Tips for prospective students Everyone is always so excited and determined to do well in the beginning, but towards the middle/end students start to slack off... don't! Work hard every step of the way and it will pay off in your favor in the end.
In three sentences Montclair has a beautiful campus with so many students, major choices, and clubs/activities it's so easy to feel welcomed. There are many different opportunities to get involved. Montclair cares about your education and works hard to make you feel at home.

Great for these types of students It's great for all types of students. Montclair is such a diverse campus you're bound to fit in somewhere! It is so diverse you will find exceptional things to do where you feel it's your type of thing!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Montclair is a great school that stresses academic performance while also having fun. They have carnivals on campus, world fair where you get free foods and drinks from an array of large companies. They also have themed parties and large concerts! Last year or so they had a Jason Derulo concert on campus! They turn a parking lot into a club and bring famous performers or well known DJs!
Bang for the buck It's worth your money especially if you utilize everything offered to you. There are so many great things offered to the student body and if you utilize them then you are getting your moneys worth and more. There is a helpful writing center where you can get help with writing your essays, research papers, etc. There is a gym, so forgo the gym membership at gyms else where. There is a library for study areas and obviously renting books. You can even rent a textbook for free for your classes (must be used in the library and cannot be taken out) You are given about $50 in your school ID for copies and prints! There is so much offered on campus! use it and you've got more than your moneys worth!
What to do for fun There are always activities on campus, and I mean ALWAYS! There are a bunch of different organizations on campus and you can join in on the fun of the organization of your interest. You can also join events held by any organization and you don't necessarily have to be a member. Montclair also has AMAZING campus wide events. Like they have a carnival day where they bring a bunch of rides and games and ice cream trucks to campus. There is also world fair day where you get a bunch of free food from different cultures. They also have events and give away things like iPads and Xboxs
Food and Dining There are plenty of options on campus. They have their own diner and Dunkin Donuts. I love their exclusive cafe where they brew Starbucks coffee. There is also a cafeteria where you can make your own subs, grab Chinese food, Mexican food, burgers, etc. and the best part is that Guy Fieri (Famous Food Channel Chef) opened his own restaurant on campus!

Academic Rigor The academics is extremely well just make sure you ask around about professors because some professors are more difficult to understand than other. Some are better at conveying lessons than others.
Tips for prospective students If you are going to commute to campus I suggest you arrive at least 20min before your class is scheduled to begin because parking can be difficult. If you have morning classes you'll be able to find parking easily before 9AM after 9AM it may become difficult or you may have to park on the top levels of the garage.
In three sentences Montclair State University has a beautiful and welcoming campus. Most professors are a great help and are willing to guide you when you're unsure of things. Montclair State University is over all a great school!
