Great for these types of students

It's great if you have little money or know you want to transfer to the UC/Cal State.

    Tips for prospective students

If you want to save money, GO TO MOORPARK. However, if you plan on transferring to a private school, check their transfer agreements before signing up for classes. Also, know the CRN numbers before the sign-up dats. Do choir; Vail Keck is a wonderful professor. Take a philosophy class with Janic Daurio; brilliant woman.

    Bang for the buck

15 Units? Less than $1000 dollars. Yes. Bang for the buck, indeed.

    Am enjoying being here

It's in a beautiful area, but I personally don't like the feel of it. It's just a personal things. Nice professors though.

    Am learning a lot

Most of the teachers are quiet knowledgeable and have a good grasp of their subject matter.

Great for these types of students

I have many friends who have left their dream schools and came back to go to Moorpark College because they weren't prepared. Moorpark College WILL PREPARE YOU! Not to mention it one of the top community colleges in California. Also, UCs prefer students from community colleges because they are clear on what they want as well as having their GE completed. It is well worth your time.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are not sure what you want to do as a career, GO HERE. You can get all of your GE done before you transfer. Including most of the time people change their majors at UCs or Universities anyways, however it is much harder at those schools to do it.

    Bang for the buck

Around 500 dollars a semester, who can beat that honestly? I am paying my way easily with a part time job. If you dont have a job, there is financial aid everywhere. Money is no comparison for the experience.

    Am enjoying being here

I love the atmosphere. Clean campus, great cafeteria food, and the counselors want you to get to whatever college you want to transfer to.

    Am learning a lot

Great teachers! Most of whom have been in the professional world. There are tons of interesting classes as well!

Great for these types of students

Anyone just out of High School, not ready to decide what you want to do yet, but not ready to sit around doing nothing.

    Tips for prospective students

    Don't skip classes!

    Bang for the buck

Community College. Obviously, it's not the expensive, especially if you qualify of the BOGG Waiver through your FAFSA.

    Did enjoy being here

Smaller Community College, less people, aesthetically pleasing campus...what's not to like?

    Did learn a lot

Great teachers, they know their stuff really well 99 percent of the time.

    Tips for prospective students

Always go to class. After all, you have to go here. Also, the library is your friend. It is possible to transfer in 2 years, you just have to be smart, and use the resources available to you. Talk to counselors about your academic goals to better plan out what classes to take each semester. You can do it, you just have to try!

    Bang for the buck

The quality of education here is the same as that of a university, but for alot less. You can save so much money by finishing your general education requiremtns here, then transferring to a 4 year school.

    Am enjoying being here

If you attended a nearby high school, it somewhat feels like you never left because you're surrounded by kids you just went to school with. However, it is a nice campus.

    Am learning a lot

Most of the teacher really know their subject. Moorpark gets a bad reputation because its a community college, but its better than most think. Teachers here are required to have their bachelor's degree to be employed. The bad reputation is from the students who slack off and don't work hard. Moorpark has a high transfer rate to 4 year schools.

Great for these types of students

ANY students wanting a job in the animal career field. Anything from zoo employees, to dolphin trainers. Studio sets, to Disney World's Animal Kingdom or Animal Planet. Some even go to endangered animal research and conservation in other countries! Of course some have even gone on to become vets, however this program is more geared towards training and/or husbandry, thus it is not the most direct route to becoming a vet.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are planning on attending the EATM program, be sure to go to the website moorparkcollege.edu/zoo to ensure you complete the prerequisites for the program before applying. If you are ready to apply, good luck with the lottery-based admittance. Otherwise, to those who get in- congrats! Don't be late to anything, study hard especially for Gary Wilson tests, and above all, enjoy it! :)

    Bang for the buck

I have a decent price, about $600/semester. However, it can get real pricey, real quick for non-residents! Be sure to try to move in-state a year in advance to try to avoid the high out-of-state costs while you are in the program (if your goal is the EATM program).

    Am enjoying being here

Since I love animals and am in the program with animals, I enjoy every moment of my 13 hour days at the zoo.

    Am learning a lot

I am currently enrolled in a special part of Moorpark College- the Exotic Animal Training and Management program. There is a zoo on campus (yes and actual zoo, with 100+ animals), and students in the program run the zoo while maintaining their education. I have indeed learned so much about my future in an animal career, and am still expecting to learn so much more within the next year!

    What to do for fun

    Join a club!

    Food and Dining

Cafeteria food is pretty good for breakfast and lunch, but a little pricey.

    Dorm Life

This is generally not applicable because it is a commuter school.

    Academic Rigor

Don't expect an easy A in your Math and Sciences; you're truly tested on your performance.

    Tips for prospective students

Sign up for classes early. They fill up early due to recent budget cuts

    In three sentences

This institution provides the necessary resources to prepare college students for transfer or any other career path they wish to pursue. The faculty provides the necessary challenges to incite students' thinking. It is an invaluable stepping block to a four-year university.

    Bang for the buck

it costs under $50 per unit. also some of the majors can give you an edge later on when employeers consider hiring you. you can interact more with elements of your future career here at moorpark college than you could if you only went to a four-year college.

    What to do for fun

there is a really nice hill side near the music building that a lot of students love to sit on.

    Food and Dining

i have never eaten at the cafe on campus, but i've never heard anything bad. there is a subway restaurant just down the street.

    Dorm Life

there are no dorms. you can either live at home or find someone renting out rooms for students.

    Academic Rigor

most professors expect you to do your best and to study. a few professors, however, provide so much extra credit or make things so easy that you could practically sleep through the semester and still get an a.

    Tips for prospective students

sign up early for classes, and show up on the first day and consistently for the next two weeks for classes you are waitlisted for or want to get into. be careful of professors who use intimidation or anger to push their own ideologies on students. get there extra early the first two weeks of classes to find parking.

    In three sentences

moorpark college is a relaxing campus with some friendly people. it's easy to forget about the city with all the wildlife on campus and the beautiful scenery. there are people from different religions, spiritualities, and ideologies here(some of them bizarre and weird); sometimes the professors are very open and vocal about their own philosophies, which can either be good or bad.

    Dorm Life

    there are no dorms here.

    Academic Rigor

even though people say its a community college, the level of studying is the same as any other college. it boils down to the professor that takes the time and puts in the effort to teach to their students.

    Tips for prospective students

when you start college be prepared to focus on your homework and do reading on your own.

    In three sentences

moorpark college is a life changing experience. the professors teach with passion. a lot of friendly students and staff.

there are many different types of clubs and sports you can participate in here.

Great for these types of students

great for students who are just looking to complete their aa or those who want to transfer to a 4-year institution. moorpark has so many different programs to help transfer students. lots of guidance and help provided here.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

    none.

    Bang for the buck

very cheap. community college is the smartest financial decision you can make. same education you would get at an expensive university for the first two years and you can always transfer afterwards.

    What to do for fun

not much of a social aspect to any community colleges, but there are still clubs, activities, and events you can participate in.

    Food and Dining

cafeteria food is decent but expensive. luckily, there are plenty of other restaurants and fast food nearby to the campus that can be alternatives.

    Dorm Life

    no dorm life.

    Academic Rigor

the academic rigor all depends on the amount of units you take, the teachers you get, and the type of classes you register for. based off my own experiences, some classes are extremely easy, while others are more challenging. however, it is all very manageable.

    Tips for prospective students

definitely register at midnight the day you need to register, and check out teachers on ratemyprofessor.com in order to help make decisions. use all the resources available to you: counselors, orientation, transfer center, et cetera.

    In three sentences

as far as community colleges go, moorpark is a great choice. definitely not nearly as crowded as other local community colleges. provides a variety of different classes, interests, and guidance.

    What to do for fun

That's not a fun question...(lol). Actually, going to school has been fun. Goin out with friends and family, spending time with our daughter and her mother, go to the beach, watch movies...

    Food and Dining

Food is adequate. Pretty close to food and dining accomodations. Food and dining within 1/4 - 1/2 mile form school and more selections within 1-5 miles.

    Dorm Life

    What to do for fun

Go to the library and get work done between classes. Or drive home when you are done for the day. Is community college meant to be fun?

    Food and Dining

Moorpark College is closing their cafeteria next semester, so this will not be an option.

    Dorm Life

    No dorms.

    Academic Rigor

Although it varies with subject, overall, the effort that Moorpark courses require is definitely more demanding than high school. As a science major, science lectures and labs can be very time consuming if you want to excel.

    Tips for prospective students

As soon as you know what you want to major in, go straight to a counselor and figure out an educational plan. As a science major, I had an extensive list of courses to complete prior to transfer, so I have remained at Moorpark an additional year. The sooner you figure it out, the sooner you'll be able to transfer.

    In three sentences

Moorpark College is a good college for people on a budget. It allows you to complete transferable courses that ease your way into a four-year university. Going to community college has prepared me better for a university rather than going straight out of high school.

    Clubs and Activities

Many many clubs, and many campus activities(such as multi-cultural day, club rush, blood donations, etc.)

Great for these types of students

Great for any type of students, part time, full time, decided, undecided. It's a good college to start out in and get your feet wet with that first degree.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

    No, not really.

    Bang for the buck

Moorpark college is VERY cheap, even for a community college. It's currently $36 a unit, not that bad. And most people not living with their parents can qualify for the BOG waiver. The campus is clean and safe, the teachers are top dollar, and the courses offered are relevant toward all majors.

    What to do for fun

Moorpark is almost int he middle of Ventura County. One can got to the Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks, or Ventura malls. OR you can go to the beach, drive to Fillmore for dirt bike riding, visit the family farms with petting zoos, go to the movies(they have a $3 theater in Simi Valley), etc.

    Food and Dining

There is no cafeteria, just vending machines(due to budget cuts it was done away with) But there are many restaurants and fast food places in the surrounding area.

    Dorm Life

There are no dorms. Students either live with parents or off campus. However, the surrounding area is a great place to live.

    Academic Rigor

Moorpark College is challenging, but the teachers are so helpful that you barely even notice. The classes are fun and usually engaging, and the faculty is passionate about what they do, and extremely knowledgeable.

    Tips for prospective students

Always check your teachers, you don't want to end up with that ONE TEACHER that most people don't connect with. Also, make a counselor appointment every semester to keep yourself on track with classes.

    In three sentences

They have wonderful teachers and counselors, for the most part. Their classes are very diverse and they offer a wide variety. And their campus is very easy to navigate.

    What to do for fun

For fun, most students hand out at Fountain Hall or on the lawns on campus. There are restaurants and coffee shops close to campus. Also there is a Teaching Zoo on campus if you need a break from classes!

    Food and Dining

No more full-service cafeteria since this semester (probably due to California's Budget Cuts) so now you can purchase pretty much anything from all of the new vending machines they installed.

    Academic Rigor

I have learned so much from my classes, they were not easy, but that is the best way to learn. Most all of my classes make full use of current technology for example: access all class information, use overheads with their computer to give PowerPoint Presentations. All of the professors seem to be very available to their students.

There are clubs relating to different religions, educational majors, hobbies, and much more. They are all organized well having a chairman for each club and also a teacher advisor to each club. Anybody looking to be in the animal training program should go to Moorpark for it's zoology program and for it's on campus zoo. There is a great radioloy program that hosts professional equipment that radiology majors should take advantage of. Moorpark has a child development center that is a great resource for students interested in child psychology or other professions that work with children.

One unique aspect of Moorpark College is that their is a lion on campus. The lion is in the on campus zoo where it is studied by students in the exotic animal training Moorpark, or EATM for short. In the early morning hours on campus, one can hear not a rooster welcoming the sunrise, but howler monkeys greeting the new day. Another fantastic location on campus is the library. The library is the heart of the campus and it sits on top of a hill. The library has three different floors, filled with books, computers and learning resources for students. The third floor of the library has a wall made out of windows so that as you study you can take a break and peer out to see the beautiful mountain landscape. It is an amazing view. As for traditions, the biggest one is having multicultural day once a year. This is a day when when the campus erupts with exotic culture and knowledge being spread throughout the grounds. Different speakers come to talk in classrooms about a wide range of fun and exciting topics like origami, beer, storytelling, religious studies, and many more. Musical performances are on going on the quad. The artists include choirs, steel drum players, and expert percussionists. The music is breathes life into the event that people can enjoy listening to while trying exotic foreign foods from the food vendors that come. This is a spectacular tradition.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is affordable for most students, but does in fact get a little bit higher each and every year. Students can go to the office for information and other types of help for paying for college.

    What to do for fun

Movie nights are held on campus on a weekly basis, showing popular recently released movies along with classics as well. The movies are played in the Forum, an auditorium with many comfortable seats and a large screen. Vending machines are located all across campus containing popular snacks and beverages. The campuses cafeteria is not run by people but by machines. There are over eight large vending machines in the entrance to the cafeteria. These larger vending machines house artisan sandwiches, pastas, and salads that are tasty and good for the health conscious. getting food from these machines makes you feel like you have been sprung into the future. The entrance of the cafeteria leads to the dining area that consists of many movable tables and chairs. This area is indoors making it a popular spot on very hot days and on very cold days. Alternatives to the cafeteria include a plethora of different big name eateries. A Subway, Starbucks, McDonald's, Frozen Yogurt and many more are right next to the campus and become popular places to go in between classes.

    Dorm Life

There are no dorms for this community college. The college is in a residential area. If students are coming to the school from far distances then they have the option at staying at the close surrounding apartment complexes.

    Academic Rigor

Students will receive an excellent education here, but one that they will have to work for. The work load varies from class to class. Overall the classes are not so difficult failure is inevitable, but at the same time A's for grades are not handed out to students who do not work for them. All teachers are willing to help students during class and almost all teachers have office hours in which students can come to them for help outside the classroom hours. If special needs for students are required then the ACCESS program is on campus to help with anything from taking notes for students to interpreting lectures to students.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply to Moorpark College as soon as you can. Find out online when you are able to start applying. Do this fast so that you will be able to find out your registration date for classes. Do not wait to the last minute to register for classes. The website will give you your registration date depending on certain aspects of your life. Special needs students, veterans, athletes and others will have more of a priority when first registering for classes, above new and other continuing students. Since new students have later registration date than other special case or continuing students by the time their registration date occurs, classes have already started to fill up. The registration date starts at midnight on the day you are able to register and many people already have the classes they want to take in mind so when midnight strikes they simply put in the CRN number of the class they wish to take. This gives the student the best opportunity to get the classes they wish to take.

    Campus Safety

I have only ever seen Campus patrol in the parking lots, and in the streets surrounding the school. Mostly, they are in place to give out tickets, so be careful about your driving and parking when you're around the campus. I have heard the common complaint of campus theft, but this is a problem that ails every college campus, I believe, and if you take care of your possessions, you will not have a problem.

    Greek Life

Moorpark College does not offer Greek life.

Great for these types of students

For students who are hoping to transfer to a top-notch school and are looking for a quality, affordable place to get their general education out of the way, Moorpark College is the go-to college. For me personally, Moorpark was a great place for me to figure out what I wanted to do with the rest of my college career, in terms of what major I would pursue, and has had a huge impact on my future.

    Bang for the buck

Being a junior college, Moorpark is affordable, and I have never felt as though I have wasted any money here. Parking permits are a relatively cheap $50, individual classes do not require exorbitant extra expenses, and classes are worth it.

    What to do for fun

I know that many student organizations have been created here to attract like-minded people, and that some of them offer group activities. Moorpark College is not in the most bustling of cities, so it is hard to say whether or not there really is anything fun to do at Moorpark College itself.

    Food and Dining

I, personally, cannot testify to the quality of the dining at Moorpark. All I can say is that there is a Subway, a McDonald's, and a Starbucks down the street, and that during finals, free coffee is available at the student center, and that's all been enough to get me through my time here.

    Dorm Life

Moorpark College does not offer housing to its students.

    Academic Rigor

This varies from professor to professor, but I have found that, at Moorpark, I am most definitely challenged, but not pushed to the brink of sanity, by my classes.

    Tips for prospective students

Come to Moorpark with an open mind. This is your time to take classes that have nothing to do with your major, and learn about things that you may not get a chance to learn later in your college career.

    In three sentences

Moorpark College is underrated by a lot of the locals in my community, if only because it is a junior college, and not UCLA. I came to Moorpark from a four-year college with low expectations, and in my first semester, I learned more than I had ever dreamed I could. My professors have been passionate, the courses have been rigorous and intellectually stimulating, and the overall experience has made me reevaluate my academic goals.
