    Campus Safety

The security staff on campus was hit and miss during my attendance at Mount Marty. Certain members definitely took their job very seriously, cared for the students, and worked to create a welcoming, safe environment; others clearly did not. As a female member of the student population, I did not feel safe on campus, especially after intervisitation hours were over, and fully expected not to have campus security either a.) take such a situation seriously, or b.) deal with the situation appropriately.

    Greek Life

There is no Greek life at Mount Marty.

    Clubs and Activities

An informal gaming club (card games like MTG and a variety of video games), student council, a variety of sports, and an active spiritual/religious group for Catholic students were the only organizations I was aware of during my semesters at Mount Marty.

Great for these types of students

Students highly involved in sports (especially baseball, volleyball, basketball, track/XC, and soccer) can expect to enjoy many unique opportunities as part of this campus community. Students looking into a career in the medical field (especially nursing) are also in abundance on this campus and enjoy the support and aid of others in the same boat.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Thirsty Thursdays is a tradition that, in my semesters there, was held close to the hearts of many students on this campus, earning the reputation and nickname of the school: Mount Party. One unusual location on campus is the cemetery where many of the Sisters of the nearby monastery have been laid to rest. Mount Marty also has an undefeated football team.

    Bang for the buck

With the understanding that Mount Marty is a private college that specializes in the training and education of nursing students, it is not surprising that tuition is inching closer to 30,000 per year. As an English major, I felt the education I was receiving was too little bang for the buck. Unless you are majoring in Nursing or a very related field, I would seriously consider another choice.

    What to do for fun

The small city of Yankton does not have much to offer in terms of big thrills for college students. Unless one is of drinking age (which most students are not), there isn't much to do (legally). Many students party, drink, explore the (bare) countryside, take walks on the walking bridge over the river, walk through the cemetery on school grounds, bowl at the local bowling alley, and shop at Walmart and the small mall.

    Food and Dining

The employees of the dining facilities, many of whom were workstudy students, were often friendly, amiable, and helpful while I attended Mount Marty. The service, however, did not make up for the appallingly poor quality of food that was served. Many students complained of food-poisoning and other food-borne illnesses and often opted for cheap dorm food like ramen instead.

    Dorm Life

The dorms at Mount Marty are separated by sex: one building for men and one for women. One would expect this to curb some undesirable behavior (especially at a Catholic college), but students often broke rules regarding intervisitation. Damage to school grounds wasn't rare and often unsavory young men would troll the hallways of the women's dorm, making the dorm both uncomfortable and relatively unsafe for those living there.

    Academic Rigor

As with many schools, Mount Marty's professors and courses vary. Some courses and professors are exceedingly difficult, while others are a breeze. Unfortunately, with certain courses and professors, students (especially those in the nursing program) had a reputation of easily getting away with cheating.

    Tips for prospective students

Get in touch with not just faculty and staff, but also current students. Ask them about student life - their favorite activities, weekend pastimes, and their general attitude about life on campus. Staff and faculty are trained to sell the school - students generally are not.

    In three sentences

The small student population would be a great asset to this school except that the student community acts as a typical small town high school in the Midwest: gossip, stupid pranks, and poor decisions abound both on and off campus. Overall, the campus staff and faculty do an excellent job of helping students both in their academic and personal lives. Unfortunately many of the facilities - especially dorms and classroom buildings - need major updates to remain comfortable living spaces.

    Campus Safety

Our campus security is very active. There are always security guards on duty and their numbers are posted all around campus. Our dorm halls also lock after midnight and a room key is required to unlock any door after midnight. I highly value the security guards and policies Mount Marty has because I know that I am safe.

Great for these types of students

Mount Marty is great for a students that values their academic experience but also wants to create memories with great friends.

    What to do for fun

There are so many different ways to enjoy yourself at Mount Marty. The college has many different sports teams to support. The school also works with the local movie theater and bowling alley to get Mount Marty students discounts at both locations. If a student doesn't want to leave campus then they can check out the many different activities put on by Student Life including a Lawn BBQ, a carnival night, comedians, hypnotists, and illusionists.

    Food and Dining

College cafeteria food is college cafeteria food. Mount Marty does its best to keep up with the constant demands for food from students and student athletes. I'm a picky eater; but I know that Mount Marty will always have food on the table for me.

    Dorm Life

Living on campus is a huge part of the college experience. Mount Marty offers a clean and well maintained dorm room to every student. Dorms will never compare to a five star hotel; however, being involved in the activities put on by our dorm hall more than makes up for this. I love living with my best friends and meeting new people every day.

    Academic Rigor

I have taken some of the hardest and most rewarding classes of my life at Mount Marty. I am in the Elementary Education program, and I would highly recommend it to anyone. Our professors are demanding and set high expectations; however, they also support students and go out of their way to help us. I'm thankful that our classes are so challenging because I know I'm learning the best material possible.

    Tips for prospective students

A tip for attending college in general is to be involved. Mount Marty has an exponential amount of opportunities for students to get involved. Some of these opportunities include athletics, clubs, a diverse student life, and intramural sports.

    In three sentences

Mount Marty is the most welcoming and friendly place I've ever been too. Mount Marty is committed to helping each student achieve their dreams. I've made some of the best friends and met some of the most influential professors at Mount Marty.
