If you want a quality education and have some fun along the way MSU is the place for you.

    Tips for prospective students

No matter what school you choose be sure to get involved in some way, it makes college much more enjoyable and Murray is a great place to get involved.

    Bang for the buck

Murray has been on Kiplinger's Rankings for Best Value Colleges. There are many scholarships available through the school, there's at least one that you qualify for. Also there are free or cheap activities on campus frequently, from movies to luaus to singing.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is beautiful, especially in autumn. It is really easy to get involved in different clubs and activities which make college much more worthwhile. The town is small but everything is conveniently located close by. The number of students is around 10,000, so you meet lots of different people and can always meet more.

Great for these types of students

I think Murray State is great for anyone that likes a small town atmosphere, friendly people, and little debt upon graduating. I am certain that almost anyone can find their place at Murray State University.

    Tips for prospective students

In order to apply for Murray State, one must have decent grades and a desire to go. If you do not have the best ACT score and do not think you will get in, think again. Murray State works with students that do not have the minimum ACT scores. Also, Murray State offers many scholarships to finance your education.

    Bang for the buck

Murray State University is one of the least expensive universities in all of Kentucky, but one does not trade the lack of expenses for a valuable education.

    Am enjoying being here

I have loved every second of Murray State. The campus is not too big to be overwhelmed, but it is not too small to be bored. There are many restaurants and stores in Murray that make the town great!

    Am learning a lot

I am studying spanish here at Murray State and have learned more about the language in the one class that I have taken so far than four years combined in high school.

    Outdoors-y, adventurous, ingenuity, creative

    Tips for prospective students

Give it a chance, just because I don't like it doesn't mean you shouldn't give it a try. I know many, many people who love this place.

    Bang for the buck

It is very inexpensive and you receive a decent education.

    Am enjoying being here

The town is tiny and there isn't much to do if you don't like to hunt or drive trucks. Although, they do have an inexpensive movie theater and the Land Between the Lakes (LBL) is beautiful year round.

    Am learning a lot

The classes are fun, but most are not challenging enough.

Great for these types of students

Murray State offers a great program for Nursing, Business, Music, Equine Science, Pre-Vet, Engineering, Art, and many others.

    Tips for prospective students

Don’t stress too much about college. Once you know that you have found the right college for you, don’t hesitate. If you know that it’s the right college for you, then go for it!

    Bang for the buck

Murray State, like most colleges, is a little expensive for out of state students, but I would recommend it to both in-state and out-of-state students looking for a good home for the next four years.

    Am enjoying being here

I’m about nine hours away from home and I have had a great experience so far by going out of state to Murray. The students here are friendly and in no time I had met and made numerous friends. Also, there are many campus and dorm activities that help students get involved and meet new people.

    Am learning a lot

Because Murray State isn’t a huge campus, many of the classes are not over thirty students. The science lectures, however, consist of many a hundred students, but the professors make themselves available if help is needed. Also, the teaching skills of the professors and excellent, and they make sure that all material covered is understood.

Great for these types of students

Murray can really please anybody! We have great classes (lots of choices), unique professors, a great campus and size, surrounded by a city that has just about everything you need! We have great sports programs and academics as well (coming from a proud Honors Program member!). Definitely have Murray at the top of your list!

    Tips for prospective students

Work hard for yourself and Murray will work hard for you. Be cool with the profs, let them know you want to succeed and they really pull out the stops to help you!

    Bang for the buck

Murray's been on the Best Deals list for colleges for years now and it's no joke: Murray has some great teachers and some great programs for the price you pay. I feel like other universities have you pay more for being bigger or closer to a big city.

    Am enjoying being here

It's a little far from home for me, being really close to my family and all, but it's been worth it to jump out into the college experience. Plus the university had a really great freshmen program to help new students adjust. Outside of that, I like the campus size and the size of the city of Murray (similar to home for me). It's easy to walk into town if you want, and everything is pretty much centralized around campus! We're not far from a couple of bigger cities for evening or weekend outings. I also feel like I know lots of people here and it's more comfortable for me trying to make friends that way.

    Am learning a lot

University Studies (required courses) for freshmen bogged me down a little, but now that I've had a chance to branch out into my own areas, I'm learning more and more about the stuff I'm really interested in!

Any and all need to apply

    Tips for prospective students

Find the library and go Greek.

    Bang for the buck

I believe this is a steal to be honest.

    Am enjoying being here

I consider Murray my real home. I am a part of the Greek Community and Student Government and there is always something to do. Whether it be attending sporting events, community service, or just relaxing in the quad. Dorms have a great community and do a great job in being a second family.

    Am learning a lot

The faculty are fantastic here. They really care about you and care to not only just know your name but to get to know you as well. You get the college course education with the cozy feeling of a high school classroom

Great for these types of students

Murray State is great for students who wish to be pushed toward a successful life during and after college. Succeeding in life is not left to those who teach us but to us as the individual who will take that information and grow from it. To attend this school, you must be goal oriented and career focused. With these values in hand, you will surely be on your way to success.

    Tips for prospective students

The best piece of advice I can give is be sure to know your professor and what they expect of you. I can say that I did not do the best I could because I did not always listen to what my teachers expected of me. When you are in college, you must be on top of things because each teacher is very unique. The second piece of advice I can give is to write everything down. Whether it is taking notes during class, which I highly advise, or just keeping your datebook in check, I cannot stress how important this is. Staying organized is the best tip I can give.

    Bang for the buck

For the type of education we are receiving at Murray State, the tuition is a steal! It is not expensive whatsoever, and for those of us who need financial aid, it is readily available. Murray State offers pages upon pages of available scholarships, need and merit based. By attending Murray State, you are getting a terrific education for a price that is unbeatable.

    Am enjoying being here

This is my hometown so I love the idea that my college is right out in my backyard. This town is a great place to be and, if you so choose, it is a great place to raise a family. The people are friendly and the environment is nurturing. The community is wonderful in providing their full support to our college population.

    Am learning a lot

Murray State is full of teachers who are always willing and able to answer your questions and discuss certain topics. The classrooms are filled with intriguing conversation and professors who are most likely open to your ideas. I have learned so much this semester it is unreal. I am a student who did not study enough in high school. However, upon entering college, I was able to get help with my studying habits and talk with people who can help me manage my time.

Great for these types of students

Anyone interested in agriculture or anyone looking for a smaller campus where you aren't just a number.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you apply for scholarships and get involved. There are many different scholarships and most everyone that applies is awarded at least one. Murray also has many different clubs for all sorts of interests so everyone can find something for them. It is also a really good way to meet new people who are interested in the same things you are.

    Bang for the buck

Murray State is definately worth the price. The classes are very informative and the dorms really arent too bad either.

    Am enjoying being here

Murray may be a small town with not much to do but it is very friendly. The campus is also very pretty in the fall when all the leaves are changing.

    Am learning a lot

All of my classes this semester were really great. The teachers really seem to know what they are talking about and care about how you do in their class. You aren't just a number and they want you to do well.

Great for these types of students

-Murray isn't the place for the down to earth type that are just in college to study and nothing else. -Murray is great for social people and people who want to get their work down and still make lots of new friends !

    Tips for prospective students

-Don't try to over load your self your first semester. -stay in the dorm the first year it is well worth it and you get a experience that you can't have any where else. -the residential colleges always have something going on and it's always fun so go out to some of the events!

    Bang for the buck

For me attending Murray is expensive, but I am a out of state student. I pay around 28 G a year. For instate student Murray is a great price though. Most in-state students pay about 14-15 G from my understanding. There are also a lot of scholarships open.

    Am enjoying being here

I am really enjoying my time here. I graduated a year early in June from my high school in the mountains in NC and came straight to Murray after graduation and have been attending classes since. I love both the location and the community. the people here in Murray are some of the nicest you will meet and are always willing to lend a hand.

    Am learning a lot

I'm learning a lot here at Murray State and not just book smarts either. At Murray you learn a lot though not only though you what your books teach, but though your teachers and their experience around the world. Murray is known for sending both students and teachers around the world to gain experiences. For the teaches it gives them even more experiences so that they are able to come back and teach even more efficiently. Murray is just all around one of the best places to come if you are looking for both knowledge and a place where you cant wait for the next class to come. =)

Great for these types of students

People who want a good college for low cost. People who take their college experience seriously. People who want to become part of close knit college community.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you find out everything you need to have completed before going and while going here. Make sure you complete your paperwork on time, well before deadlines.

    Bang for the buck

They have one of the least expensive tuitions of most colleges. Its easier to get tuition paid for through scholarships. Plus you wont be cheated this is a good school that will challenge you, not a party school.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is large enough to give you the total college experience, but its not so big that you're just another number. There are lots of things to do and see in town as well.

    Am learning a lot

The teachers here are all well experienced in their fields. They know how to give you good hands on experience that you can later use in your own field. You may even walk away with something to show an employer.

    Campus Safety

racer patrol is great if you ever feel like you need an escort anywhere. the dorms host a lot of safety meetings at the beginning of semesters too, just to inform students of potential dangers and how to prevent them.

    Clubs and Activities

there are so many clubs and activities at msu that you will find at least one that is perfect for you. and if, by chance, you don't - you can always start a new club!

Great for these types of students

    independent, social, active, outdoorsy

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

the shoe tree! absolutely my favorite thing on campus. if two people meet at murray and end up getting married, they nail 1-2 shoes on the shoe tree. they can write important dates or places. a lot of couples who are on the shoe tree have come back in later years to add a few finishing touches, like a shoe from their first child. it's a beautiful tradition.

    What to do for fun

some fraternities throw parties on thursdays and on the weekends, but a lot of those parties require partiers to be on a list. murray basketball is always fun to watch (only undefeated team left in the ncaa as of 02/08/2012!)! there's also murray's on-campus hookah bar, called the night owl. murray also hosts a ton of great speakers and programs throughout the semester!

    Food and Dining

winslow dining hall always has some great food. there's also fast track, located on the side of winslow where students can use cash or flex dollars to buy things like groceries, toiletries, and first aid kit supplies. local businesses give msu students some great discounts for things like dining out or delivery foods, tanning beds, the night owl, and the local chiropractor.

    Dorm Life

dorm life is one of the best things about murray. each dorm is a separate college with it's own mascot. the dorms play intramural games for a whole variety of sports. each dorm puts on programs and has town hall meetings to help make life at msu enjoyable. currently a great white shark from white college and i love it! make sure you check out all your dorm options when you apply!

    Academic Rigor

each class is different because each professor has their own way of teaching. as long as you apply yourself and study hard, you can succeed in any class. and don't be afraid to ask for help from a tutor or even your professor. they are there to answer your questions and help you succeed!

    Tips for prospective students

realize that murray is a small town so it can be a culture shock if you're coming in from a big city. when you're touring murray, ask as many questions as you want about activities and/or sports you enjoy to see what teams are available. try to truly picture yourself at murray state. it really helps with your decision making.

    In three sentences

i live 5.5-7 hours from murray, depending on the route. homesickness is really hard for me. but involving myself in things like the equestrian program, intramural sports and dorm activities has really helped me adjust. i truly love murray state, but because i am from a large city the town of murray is just too small for me.

    Tips for prospective students

It's hard to adjust to the schedules and living on your own at first, but it gets much easier as it continues. The biggest peice of advice I could offer is to not procrastinate and get assignments done as early as possible. Time management is key!

    Bang for the buck

The cost is very affordable as far as colleges go. The school has a beautiful campus, a great academic enviroment, and the staff is extremely nice. The only thing I'm not happy with are the dorms. They are a little small and kinda unkempt, but other than that, they are completely livable. (And, if you are willing to pay a little more you can get the really nice dorms)

    Am enjoying being here

I love the enviroment! There is always some kind of activities going on so that the students are able to have fun. There are hundreds of clubs and organizations for the diverse students attending Murray State. And everything is close to campus!

    Am learning a lot

Murray State has a lot to offer acedemically. The classes are challenging and fun. The professors are very nice, and are more than willing to offer extra help.

If you enjoy a slower paced lifestyle and a more rural setting then MSU is the school for you, even though Murray, KY itself is a small city Nashville, TN is only 2 hours away and Paducah, KY is just under an hour from the campus as well for those times you just have to get to an urban area.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you always go to classes and school events as professors are much more willing to work with you if you do these things. Ask around to figure out what classes/professors to take and when to take them.

    Bang for the buck

the tuition prices are very reasonable for the education that you receive, unlike some universities Murray State lets you drop your meal plan after your sophomore year, which is also when you can move off campus (unless you would commute from home) which aides in saving money

    Am enjoying being here

the campus is absolutely beautiful. The classes and professors help make college much more enjoyable and there is always something to do despite Murray, KY's small size. Just around 1/2 hour from campus is the beautiful National Recreation area known as Land Between the Lakes, which include water activities, hiking, biking, camping, fishing, etc. anything to fill you outdoor interests.

    Am learning a lot

the teachers really care about how much you learn, if you have problems all of the professors are willing to meet outside of class to assist you

The price of tuition is one of my main reasons for choosing MSU in the first place and you definitely get a superb education for the price.

    Am enjoying being here

It is exactly the type of college I want to attend. It is in a small town and class sizes are smaller. The campus is beautiful and there is always something going on that students can get involved in.

    Tips for prospective students

If I had to give any tips it would be: 1. live on campus 2. always meet the scholarship dead lines 3. don't be afraid to go to your professors because they'll do anything and everything to help you

    Bang for the buck

MSU gives you the education you could recieve at any other high priced university for half the price! The application for scholarships is so easy and boy do they provide! So far I have had almost all of my school paid for thanks to their scholarship program. And when it comes to paying for it they are so good about working with you and finding ways to help you pay. Going to Murray would not be a waste for anyone!

    Am enjoying being here

I absolutely LOVE being living at Murray. I live on Campus in the Residential College of Richmond. The housing accommodations are amazing and they make you feel so much at home. If you want to get the college experience, living on the Murray Campus will surely give you it!

Great for these types of students

Murray State is great for business students, as well as those looking into the liberal arts. There is a large Agriculture program and a splendid Music program.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved in the numerous clubs on campus. Living on campus, especially for your first year, is a good idea in order to get to know people and feel more apart of the school.

    Bang for the buck

It's cheaper than the larger state schools, and you still receive an equal if not better education. You definitely receive more attention from the professors due to the smaller classes,. I've also found that even in larger classes the professor makes an effort to know everyone's name.

    Am enjoying being here

I have met wonderful people and the campus is very nice. The town of Murray is small, but my friends and I always find stuff to do.

    Am learning a lot

Many of my classes have been challenging, but very enlightening. Most of the professors really know what they're talking about.

    Campus Safety

Murray is one of the safest towns in Kentucky, and was named the Friendliest Small Town in America in 2012 by Rand McNally! Crime is low and students especially are very, very safe.

Great for these types of students

Relaxed, social, serious, pretty much any type. You can find your place here. Majors: Music, Pre-Med, Business, Nursing, Sciences, Psychology. All have great programs here at MSU.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The Shoe Tree: If you meet your spouse while attending Murray State, it is tradition for each person to nail one of their shoes to a certain tree on campus. Campus Lights: The longest running student led musical production in the south. It is run by Phi Mu Alpha and Sigma Alpha Iota. All proceeds go to the music department to fund scholarships.

    Bang for the buck

Murray State is ranked by U.S. News and World Report as the #7 Public Regional University in the South, and #11 in the nation in the same category. It is ranked by Forbes as one of the best values in higher education. The tuition is well worth the education you receive. I am so glad I chose to attend Murray State University!

    What to do for fun

Go to the sporting events! Murray State Racer Basketball creates an electric environment in the CFSB Center. We've been ranked by ESPN as one of the Top 30 Basketball programs since 1980. Aside from sports, Murray has a bowling alley, a movie theater, local shopping, several restaurants, and is close to Kentucky Lake and the Land Between the Lakes. So if you want to get away, there is a large campground area on the lake that is absolutely beautiful. It's a small town environment, but it's close to a lot of things to do.

    Food and Dining

Winslow Dining Hall and the Thoroughbred Room provide some of the finest dining I've had from any school I've ever visited. There are many options every day, and you can find something for you even if you have specific dietary needs or allergies (i.e. a vegan diet, a peanut allergy, etc.). The dining staff do a great job taking care of students. Dining is also a great option for student employment, with half of the staff being made up of student workers.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are well maintained, with a top notch staff that will take care of any needs you may have. The maintenance staff is frequently there to make sure everything is neat and clean and functions properly. The grounds and buildings are fantastic, and are a pleasure to call home.

    Academic Rigor

Murray State's classes are very rigorous. You have to work hard to succeed. However, the professors are there to help. You just have to ask. The dedicated staff will do everything they can to make sure you achieve your goals.

    Tips for prospective students

Take your place! Murray State is a great place, if you just figure out what you're looking for. There is a thriving Greek community, many academic organizations, and many other ways to make friends. So don't worry about being alone. Be sure to stay committed. College is a big step, but don't lose focus! Keep up with your studies and balance your college life, and your full experience will be better than you can imagine here at Murray State University!

Murray State is an amazing place to learn and grow not only as a student, but as a person. The environment is extremely tolerant, friendly, and extremely helpful for students in any available major. College isn't easy, but Murray State's faculty and staff, along with the older students, are willing to help make it as easy as it possibly can be!

Great for these types of students

People that prefer medium sized colleges. Not so large that you never see people you know but large enough that you can constantly meet someone new and interesting. Murray is also for people that are serious about both academics and social lives. Its a great place to find a balance of both.

    Tips for prospective students

Bring a rain jacket, rubber boots, and carry them everywhere. Sometimes, Murray does have surprise weather. The dorms are also strongly suggested to get the full dose of college life. When you live off of campus, you are not as likely to be as involved as you would be on campus.

    Bang for the buck

Murray's tuition overall is very cheap for what you are getting here. You make friends for life and earning a diploma for a better career. Also, the campus itself is very beautiful even though its usually windy on the main campus walk. The professors are adequate, the dorms are much better than they could have been, and the dining halls are very good.

    Am enjoying being here

So long as you get involved on campus, your Murray State experience will be everything you want it to be. There are fraternities, sororities, clubs, and organizations that can make your experience here amazing and benefit your education. We have everything from Pre-Professionals to Pi Kappa Alphas so your surely to find your niche at Murray.

    Am learning a lot

In all honesty, I am learning a lot about college itself along with the subjects I need for my Pre-Pharmacy curriculum. There are teachers, tutors, and advisers that are always willing to devote some of their time to make certain you understand any class you are taking. Some may not be the best to ask but in all cases, there is definitely someone here on campus who can help you in your class.

Great for these types of students

The TSM program is great for IT students. It more than adequately prepares you for an IT career and provides a high opportunity for advancement.

    Bang for the buck

The cost of attendance was a bit steep for my financial levels, but I know that I am obtaining a degree from one of the best colleges in the nation. That fact makes the cost more than acceptable for the benefits later in life.

    Will enjoy being here

The campus is well organized and beautiful, and the people are friendly and active. I enjoy the central location of the campus within the town and the supportive nature of the community.

    Will learn a lot

I have been thoroughly impressed with the supportive and helpful nature of the Murray State staff on numerous occasions, and I have been exposed to the high quality of their professors as well. I have no doubt in their ability to teach clearly and effectively.

-Arts. Murray State University is a great place for drama, music, everything. Racer Band is really fun, too. -Computers. Murray has 4-5 computer shops right off-campus, and the CS, CIS, and TSM majors are hugely dedicated to studying computers. Murray is the only school in the state that offers TSM (telecommunications systems management) or similar majors. -While I'm not Greek, Murray does have some really great fraternities & sororities.

    Tips for prospective students

-Get involved on campus. Even if you're not a theatre major, audition for plays and musicals. It's a great way to meet people. -Don't take too many classes your first semester. It's better to ease yourself in and realize you can do more than get completely overloaded at the beginning.

    Bang for the buck

Incredible price. As far as I know, Murray is the cheapest school in the state, but it still has really good programs. They also really push study abroad programs - so much that they'll throw scholarship money at you if you want to go on one!

    Am enjoying being here

Murray might be small, but it's got great places. The way most of the dorms are set up is good too - 2 people per room, 2 rooms per bathroom. No need to worry about community baths! Don't like the dorms? Most of the apartments are less than 5 minutes off campus.

    Am learning a lot

The faculty here are great! They'll all give you help if you need it, and most of them are really awesome to just hang out with. Lots of really awesome people.

    Campus Safety

After touring the campus, I feel the campus is very safe. The police station is located on campus for quick response. The campus is well-lit at night. Also there are various emergency buttons along the walkways that you can use to get help if you need it. You can also be escorted to and from late night classes if you would like. There is always someone in each of the dorm lobby's to check id's and make sure that everyone is authorized to be in there. In order to get in the dorm building you have to swipe your student id to unlock the door.

    Bang for the buck

After looking at various schools that offered a pre-veterinarian program, this one seemed to be the best one and had one of the lowest tuition rates. They seem to have good quality schooling for less. There's so much that is offered on campus that is free of charge or cheaper than other universities.

    What to do for fun

There is always something going on at the campus. There's a huge variety of clubs, sororities and fraternities, and sports games. Also there is a work out building with a pool, many basketball courts, a track, and many exercise machines.

    Food and Dining

After visiting campus, I ate at Winslow Dining Hall many times. The food there was great and there was a huge variety. I am an extremely picky eater and I always found something to eat. The only down side is that it closes at 8 pm so if you have a late class or want a late night snack you have to either leave campus or keep food in your dorm.

    Dorm Life

I have yet to move into my dorm, but I spent my fall break visiting a friend and I got to stay in her dorm. The dorms are bigger than other schools that I have seen. They are also kept maintained and clean. The security is great. There was always someone at the front counter inside of the dorm lobby at all times checking id's.

    Academic Rigor

I have not yet attended the school yet, I start 1/17/2012, but after looking through a few of my class outlines and a syllabus I can tell that I will definitely have to study a lot and focus on my schooling. It seems to be a lot more challenging than the Community College I attended in the fall.

    Tips for prospective students

If at all possible, tour the campus. I also spent my fall break from another college with a friend of mine that was a Murray State student and got to go to her classes and experience the college life. That week made me want to attend Murray even more. I would highly recommend trying to this.

    In three sentences

The environment seems so nice and welcoming. All of the staff that I have had to work with was very friendly and helpful. The campus may be big but it is easy to find where you need to go and is a very pretty, welcoming atmosphere.

    Tips for prospective students

a lot of people are going to tell you that the major key to success is class attendance and turning in homework and you should definitely listen! no one tells you that rain boots and a coat are a necessity, as well as things like stamps, staples, and lots of quarters for laundry!

    Campus Safety

Campus Security is amazing. Murray is actually voted one of the safest schools in Kentucky and for a good reason. If you are out at night, pulled a late night at the library or had a night class and walk to your car or dorm alone or don't feel safe for some reason you can call the campus security and they will walk with you. This is something that is wonderful to have, especially as a female student. I have never once not felt safe at Murray.

    Greek Life

The best part about Greek life is that it is so chill. At Murray it isn't a big deal if you are Greek or not. There are about five sororities and six fraternities and they all seem to have a mix of different people. I myself am in a sorority and I think its great that not all of my friends are in the Greek system and it is easy to have a life outside of your sorority or fraternity. It isn't the typical image of Greeks where its all about parties but they are also serious about philanthropy and are involved on campus.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many clubs and organizations that students can join. Everything from the Student Government Association, to a fencing club that competes in tournaments to a business organization that's great for the business students to make connections when they graduate. Everybody can find something to join there.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Traditions are a big part of Murray life. The most popular is the shoe tree were couples who met at Murray nail a shoe each to the tree and if they have kids they put their baby shoes on it too. We also have a horse called Racer One that runs around the track everytime the football team gets a touchdown.

    Bang for the buck

Murray is one of the cheapest universities in Kentucky but it still keeps up with the times and is always updating computers, the library, and have a new gym that is free for students. The thing I love is that there is always free stuff and events going on and in the town of Murray almost everywhere gives discounts for being a student.

    What to do for fun

One of the things that makes Murray cool is that the campus is at the center of the town and so the town makes sure there is all kinds of things to do for the students. There is an original Dairy Queen that people always go nuts over. Plenty of restaurants, a movie theatre, and there is always some kind of event or festival.

    Food and Dining

There are two places on campus to eat the T-Room and Winslow Dinning Hall. The TRoom only takes flex but has the best food and everyone goes crazy over their wings. Winslow is part of a meal plan that you can choose to get and even though they don't change up the meals very often they have sandwiches really great pizza available at lunch the best breakfast ever and salad bar and ice cream. Of course there are many places off campus to eat as well.

    Dorm Life

The dorms, or Residential Colleges, are the one big downside to Murray. Most of them are small and outdated for a large price and it is required to stay there for two years. However they are currently working on renovating all of them and have built two new ones, New Clark and New Richmond that include apartment style living and are wonderful buildings. I give the school Kudos for recognizing that this is the one downside to the school and improving it.

    Academic Rigor

I personally enjoyed all of my classes this year. There seems to be a good balance between the difficult and easier classes. If students make use of the academic advisers they can find some awesome classes. Murray has a wide variety and it is easy for students to build their major, minor and schedule to fit them personally.

    Tips for prospective students

    1. Get used to Winslow Dinning Hall food, sometimes they have some really fantastic meals but you get tired of it. 2. Get to know your professors, they really love it when students take effort to talk to them or ask questions especially the freshman. 3. Don't get overly excited that you have Flex dollars and spend it all in the first couple of months, this happens to a lot of first years.

    In three sentences

Murray State is overall a great school that has a friendly environment and really good classes. The Professors seem to actually care about you, and that may have something to do with the small liberal arts school environment. The city of Murray itself is a small town people complain that you can run out of things to do but its beautiful and most things are within walking distance.

Tuition at Murray State is expensive, especially if you don't receive any scholarships or financial aid. I think it is worth it though, campus is pretty big and there are a lot of different majors you can choose.

    What to do for fun

Murray is a small town when college kids go home for the summer this town is dead. I have lived here my whole life. I like to go to the lakes, its about a thirty minute drive but worth it. I enjoy going to the wellness center on campus. They have workout equipment, a pool, and hot tub. Sometimes I just enjoy taking a ride in my car. We have a bowling alley, movie theater, skating rink, and a few parks. Most kids just like to take our cars to the parking lots and talk to each other.

    Food and Dining

There are many places on campus to eat and there is a big variety of different types of food everyday. There is the dining hall which is where most students eat and it always has decent food.

    Dorm Life

I lived in the dorms my freshman year. It was fun at first but there small and I don't like living in tight spaces or sharing a bathroom.

    Academic Rigor

Professors are very lenient as long as you are honest with them. You can find all your assignments on Blackboard and e-mail your instructor if you don't understand something.

    Tips for prospective students

    1. Choose classes your interested in and go to them. Always turn in your assignments on time. 2. Meet with your professors and your Advisor when you need help or contact them by e-mail. They will do all they can for you. 3. Get involved in some organizations on campus. 4. If you need extra help seek out a tutor, they are worth the money.

    Clubs and Activities

The marching band is awesome! It is a lot of fun and you meet a ton of people. Everyone I hang out with at Murray is because of Racer Band.

    Food and Dining

The food at Winslow Dining Hall is pretty good. Its better than the food at my high school. You just get tired of eating at Winslow for an entire year but there are restaurants near campus you can eat at too.

    Dorm Life

The dorms on campus like to call themselves residential colleges. Each college has activities for the people who live there to participate in. There are also competitions that put the colleges against each other.

    Academic Rigor

    Dorm Life

    Academic Rigor

All you have to do is do your homework and research for your projects required. No need to go above and beyond, just enough to prove to your professor that you understand the assignment and the concepts taught.

Food at Murray is tasty. We have one main cafeteria called Winslow they cook home cooked meals, there is not Burger King or McDonald's in our cafe. They are open for 7am- 11pm. That's right 11 at night, 8:30-11 is called late night they do different themes each night, Wednesdays are Buffalo Wild Wings nights. We have 2 other eating places on campus but meal plans aren't included there.

    Dorm Life

DORM life at MSU somewhat non-existent. Well that's because we call them residential colleges. All residential colleges have their own mascot, colors, and government. They also all have a professor that lives there called a college head. We participate in intramural sports and other competitions. More or less, it's the real-life Harry Potter, minus the magic and near death experiences of course.

    Academic Rigor

I gave MSU a three in academic rigor because it is extremely thorough. I was debating between a 3 and 4 because although it is thorough and you are expected to do well and try hard, the teachers are there with you every step of the way. They also offer many free tutoring locations on campus. So even though the work is somewhat rigorous, you aren't doing it alone, the helpful resources are plentiful.

    Tips for prospective students

This may sound cliche, but get involved! It makes a world of a difference, especially while attending and small school like Murray. Although the academics portion is wonderful, Murray, Ky is a small college town, so if you don't get involved you may be a little bored. No worries though, MSU offers something for everyone, and if not then you can just make your own club!

    In three sentences

The class ratios are small, allowing for more one-on-one teaching, and the teacher genuinely want you to succeed. The environment is like no other, everyone from the President to the students participates in school events, and different fun dances or promotions happening on campus (check out the racer shuffle on you tube). I love everything about it, and residential life is amazing, but the intramural sports was the icing on the cake for me.

The main dining hall gets tiring to eat in after a while but there are places to eat all over campus and a mini-mart that you can buy snacks and food in.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are alright. I don't advise living in Springer and Franklin; they are old and need to be torn down.

We have great campus safety. There are three types of police that patrol around, the campus police, the Murray City police and the Callloway Co. police. There are safety lights everywhere and we also have Racer Patrol, which will escort you wherever you need to go if it's late and you feel uncomfortable walking in the dark.

    Greek Life

    Clubs and Activities

There are alot of clubs, but you have to be on the lookout for them. Most of them don't advertise themselves very well, but you can always ask your advisers to help you find what you are looking for.

    Bang for the buck

Murray is an exceptional school. The academics wholly prepare you for whatever career you are pursuing and compared to other universities, the cost is very minimal.

    What to do for fun

Murray is a quaint small town, so with that being said, there isn't a whole lot to do. We have a movie theater, but we don't have a big indoor mall. There is one about 30 minutes down the road though. You can always find something to do though. The people here are used to making their own fun, so you really never get bored.

    Food and Dining

The food isn't bad. Most of it is southern cooking, which is my favorite. But, it does get old very quick. However, there are lots of options on campus and off campus.

    Dorm Life

We have residential colleges, which means that your dorm is like a community. You play other colleges in intramurals and each college has their own staff member and board that plans activities and bonding exercises. Murray prides itself on this aspect.

    Academic Rigor

The science classes are very difficult, most of the general education classes aren't that bad. It really just depends on the professor and your work ethic.

    Tips for prospective students

It is a small community so if you are looking for a city atmosphere, this is not the school for you. But, if you are looking for a caring staff/faculty, small class sizes and awesome opportunities to get involved, plus an awesome basketball team, Murray State might be the place to look!

    Bang for the buck

You're definitely getting what you pay for! Murray has excellent professors and they are always starting up new classes that are enjoyable!

    What to do for fun

    Food and Dining

The dining hall at Murray, Winslow, is overall very good. Naturally there are some days when it seems they are just serving not-so-great food but they are very friendly.

    Dorm Life

The residential colleges are all really great! I live in Franklin College and our community is so close-knit and everyone is so open and kind to each other. People in housing are so overly helpful and will never turn you down if you need help or even if you just want to hang out at the front desk and talk to them.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be afraid to talk to people who work/live in your residential college they are there to help you and make you feel comfortable. Everyone will say this but get involved, there are so many clubs and sports that there will be something for you to do even if you don't know how to play/do something you should still go for it. When Murray decided to create a women's rugby team I signed up even though I didn't know how to play and everyone was very open to showing me how to play.

    In three sentences

Overall Murray is a great school, the campus is beautiful and they have a lot of events that are enjoyable and interactive. It is a good sized school where everything is within walking distance, for the most part. They are also very well prepared to make sure all students feel safe when going to and from class, or any where on campus when it is dark.

    Dorm Life

I really like the dorm life at Murray. Though some of the residential colleges aren't the nicest, almost all of the have great environments when it comes to people and community.

    Academic Rigor

It really depends on what program you are in. Being a physics major, the academic rigor is very high. Most of my friend's academic rigor is much less than mine, due to their major.

I'm sooo looking forward to joining student organizations like Friends of Anime, College Democrats, and MSU Student Organization for Reason and Science. I recommend any new students get involved in clubs that interest them. I'm sure it will help you meet new people and make connects that will last a lifetime!

    Food and Dining

The food in the Stables is great, but it's more expensive. I'm not really a fan of the food in the main dining hall students use. Too much fast food for my taste, but I suppose every college is that way.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are good for the price. I spent the summer in Regents, and it was decent. My only real complaint was how low the shower head was! I'm only 5'3 and had to lean down just to wash my hair. Going back, I plan to live in Lee Clark or James H. Richmond. I love the suite style room design in these dorms. A student can have there own little room for privacy, but it's connected to a small living area and bathroom shared by three other people, so you'll always find someone to hang out with if you need company!

    Academic Rigor

I'm a fairly bright student, but my major in Communication Disorders is sure to challenge me. The academics aren't that difficult (well, depending on your major some will be), but you should learn a lot.

    Tips for prospective students

There is a movie theater here in town, along with a bowling alley that my friends and I often go to for something fun to do(the bowling alley also has fantastic prices!). Many people will also go to Land Between the Lakes or Paducha for a day away.

    Food and Dining

The food is very good at first, but since there is only one place to eat (without using flex dollars) it gets very old quickly. There are other places on campus to eat, however they require the flex dollars that come with your meal plan. I suggest using your flex sparingly throughout each semester when you really get sick of eating at Winslow.

    Dorm Life

The RA's are fantastic and the dorms really aren't too bad (and I currently live in the oldest dorm). People are very friendly and the RA's are always holding little social events that you can pop in on and hang out with some people from the building that you may not have known before.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved. It doesn't matter what you are interested Murray has a club, group, or organization that you could fit into. So get involved in some of them. Even try ones you wouldn't necessarily expect to enjoy because you might find that there is a whole new set of people that you fit really well with. Also, don't be afraid to talk to your professors! They won't bite, i promise. They are typically very concerned about you succeeding in their class and will do what they can to help you, but you have to ask them first. They usually really appreciate when students come to them with questions and they can see that you are trying to do well in their class.

    In three sentences

I am a freshman pre-vet major here at Murray State and so far I love it! Professors are typically very friendly and willing to help when you need them. Students are very nice and usually quite easy to get along with.

I have night classes two nights a week and walk home in the dark. Not one time walking on campus at night have I felt unsafe. There are also buttons you can press located every so often if you do feel unsafe. There is also campus patrol and campus police station.

    Greek Life

Greek life is evident on campus, I am not in one, but my friends who are all take is a very positive experience! You also have a lot of opportunities. But, don't think you need to be in a sorority or fraternity to be involved, fit in, or be cool or go to parties or anything. That was my impression before I went to college, and now my view is the opposite!

    Clubs and Activities

Lots of clubs to be involved in! I highly recommend joining a club, 98% of my friends come from me joining the rowing team. Even if you don't think its you, take a step out of your comfort zone...it'll be worth it!!

Great for these types of students

There are also things like Tent City and All Campus Sing.

Murray State is not an expensive school at all. Especially if you get in state tuition which is also offered to some surrounding states. That is one of the main reasons I came to Murray. Also, fill in scholarships early!!!

    What to do for fun

There isn't much in the town of Murray, however, there's usually vents going on on campus.

    Food and Dining

Winslow is the main cafeteria on campus, its right by all the dorms. The food isn't that bad. They serve breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late night (fries, pizza, cinnamon sticks, cheese sticks, nachos, chicken nuggets, ect.) and is open until 11 p.m. on week nights. Their is also the food truck, Dunkers Deli and Starbucks in the Curris Center (across the bridge by all the classes) and Harts Caf© which has smoothies and stuff. Off campus their are the main restaurants like Applebee's, Cracker Barrel, Culvers, ect. Their is also a couple unique restaurants in Murray.

    Dorm Life

Make sure to turn in housing apps early! If not you'll get stuck with a dorm that's not the nicest! However, they are in the process of renovating the different 'residential colleges'. Dorms are known as residential colleges and have their own mascot, sports teams, and events.

    Academic Rigor

If you're into...print...design? Yes, if you're into print design this is perfect! That's all the Graphic Design program focuses on. Bummer, really.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

We have a shoe tree. Don't ask.

    Bang for the buck

We have the Curris Center, which is often called the living room of Murray State. It's where most students hang out during their free time. There's a TV area in two places down stairs, as well as computers. You'll often find the GAMA lovers down on the first floor.

    What to do for fun

I'm sure there's plenty to do for fun, but I'm honestly not on campus a lot. There are university held events from club organizations. There's Friends of Anime (now known as Gaming, Anime, and Manga Alliance), the League of Legends group, Magic the Gathering group, and other various groups. Yearly, MSU has the zombie walk, where they walk from campus to the nearby Dairy Queen. We also have a bowling alley with billiards being redone. Nothing is quite as interesting as seeing prom dresses and suits bowl and playing pool.

    Food and Dining

Compared to a larger university, MSU doesn't have a lot to choose from that will accept meal plans. You have Winslow's cafeteria and the Thoroughbread Cafeteria. Both are good, but I prefer Winslow's. At Winslow's you have the morning menu, lunch menu, dinner menu, and after hours menu, which has a combination of food from lunch and dinner.

    Dorm Life

I have never lived in a dorm at MSU, but some of my friends that live in dorms absolutely love it. The dorm rooms I have been in have shared bathrooms, but not communal. Every two rooms has a shared bathroom, so four occupants per bathroom.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are super easy. In fact, I personally think that the college courses here are easier than high school classes.

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared to do your own research when it comes to personal student life. Just like when you had to write that research paper in high school and had to cross reference answers you found, you need to do the same here. While one staff member might say one thing pertaining to a subject, another staff member might say something completely different. If you're a transfer student merely moving here because it's cheaper, expect to be placed on probation unless you're considered a graduate. Also, web classes are expensive here.

    In three sentences

MSU is a friendly, small college. You'll soon realize that your geeky friends vary from the outgoing, popular type to the timid recluses. It's very lax most of the time, which can be a downfall when it comes to staff, compared to larger colleges that have a strict routine.

    Greek Life

Sorority and fraternity life provides excellent opportunities for college students to find a home away from home, develop social and leadership skills, and enhance academics. Approximately 12% of the Murray State University student body belongs to a Greek sorority or fraternity

    Clubs and Activities

Any club or activity you can think of, MSU most likely has it and if not the University gives you the opportunity to create one. So everyone has a place they can be involved.

Great for these types of students

Great Beginnings program is great for new students and incoming freshman. It starts off with faculty, staff, student organizations and community members working together to help students move in. Then after move in day there is an entire week of activities designed for students to allow them to feel more welcomed and comfortable.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

An unusual location and tradition on campus would be the Shoe Tree. I would say at least 50 pairs of mismatched shoes are nailed to it. No one on campus can really say when the tradition of the shoe tree began. If two students meet at Murray State, fall in love and then marry, they will have good luck if each partner nails a shoe to the shoe tree. Lovers usually write their anniversaries on their shoes as well. It is also common for people to return to nail a baby shoe to the tree when they've started their family.

    Bang for the buck

Murray State University is a die hard RACER NATION! Gold and Blue are our colors, if you do decide to attend our basketball and football games are the most entertainment. You'll feel the school spirit.

    What to do for fun

On the campus there are always many things that they offer to do. There are plays, movies played in the Curris Center theater, step shows, the resident halls even offer activities.

    Food and Dining

Winslows Dining is awesome! You can never go wrong with the dining services. You have a wide variety of food choices and creations.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is so much fun. You get the chance to meet new people, and form new friendships.

    Academic Rigor

Allow yourself time to study and have some down time. Make sure you keep up with all your assignments, even if you miss class always check your syllabus given out to you by your professor and email your professors to ask what you missed in your class session.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are thinking about attending Murray State University, you would not be making the wrong choice. Once you get there make sure you get involved as much as your schedule allows you to, always have communication with your professors, get out and explore what the University has to offer.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Murray State also has some pretty interesting traditions and fun locations. Every April, we have All Campus Sing, a lip-syncing contest that has become a campus tradition. Also, we have the Shoe Tree. The Shoe Tree is a fun, though odd, tradition. If a couple met at MSU and later get married, they can come back and put a shoe on the tree commemorating the occasion. One of the most untapped locations on campus is Pogue Library. Pogue is full of antiques and cool silence--a perfect combination for studying...or napping!

    What to do for fun

There are lots of things to do for fun both on and off campus. On campus, the quickest way to find fun things to do is get plugged-in at your residential college. The colleges are always having programs and activities. You can also join one of the many organizations and clubs on campus--find a group that fits you. I know personally that joining a campus ministry group was the best thing I could have done--and that includes having fun. We are always doing fun activities and trips with Christ Ambassadors. Off campus, the city of Murray does have fun things to do, such as indoor glow golf, a movie theater, multiple parks, more restaurants than we know what to do with, and, coming soon, bowling. In addition to these things, we do have some cool shopping places, such as Game Stop, Rue 21, and Payless Shoes. Plus, we are so near to Land Between the Lakes (LBL), Kentucky Lake, and Kentucky Dam, so outdoor fun is always available. Also, we have a seasonal Dairy Queen, and some of the most fun I've had was walking to DQ with my friends. Fun doesn't have to complicated or expensive!

    Food and Dining

There are lots of places to eat on MSU's campus, so you never have to worry about going hungry! The main cafeteria is Winslow Cafeteria, and it is open all day. They have everything from pizza and sandwiches to cultural dishes and a Mongolian grill! Winslow takes Flex dollars, meal plan meals, and regular forms of payment. There is also the T-Room in the Curris Center (between dorms and classes). They serve breakfast and lunch, including anything from omelettes to pizza to chicken strips to beef pot roast. However, the T-Room does not take meal plan meals, so you have to use Flex or regular American money. There are also many smaller places on campus from which to get food throughout the day, including Starbooks in Waterfield Library, Business Express in the Business Building, Hart Cafe in Hart College, Rhino Rest Stop in Regents College, the Thouroughbred Cafe in the Curris Center, Dunker's Deli in the Curris Center, and FastTrack near Winslow. These smaller places, like the T-Room, only take Flex or regular American money. One thing students always fear is the Freshman 15! Yes, it is so tempting to eat in excess with all the available food and no restrictions.... But, your health is important, so eat smart and go to the Wellness Center regularly!

    Dorm Life

MSU uses a Residential College system, based off of that of Oxford University and other universities. This means that each of the dorms has its own community and spirit. Each college not only has students and RAs in the community, but also faculty and staff--this helps MSU have a cohesive environment both academically and in every day life. How your dorm life is on campus depends on which Residential College you choose. Some of the colleges are suite-style, some apartment-style, some community-bathroom-style, and some even let you have a private room. Also, the cost of each college ranges, depending on the age of the building and how recent expensive renovations were. Overall, dorm life at MSU is great! Get involved in your college's community--go to programs and events, hang out in the lounges, and chat with RAs in the lobby!

    Academic Rigor

Academically, Murray State can be challenging, especially as you transition in from high school. However, even the toughest classes can be conquered by going to class, paying attention in class, taking good notes, and studying. I myself have had a few rough classes. But I worked hard all semester and managed to get A's even in the tough classes. However, courses can differ wildly depending on who the professor is, so it is okay to do your homework before registering for classes (by homework, I mean checking RateMyProfessor and such websites). MSU does have a system that requires all students to take the same kind of general education courses in addition to the courses required by your major. This helps us learn about more areas than just our major and provides us with a wide and solid foundation for further study. MSU has an Honors Program for those who desire more of a challenge and enjoy a more discussion-based classroom design. HP is a good program and worth the time and effort if it's what you truly want.

    Tips for prospective students

Start strong academically. Even if you don't start strong, you can still finish well, so don't give up! Call your parents regularly--they care about you! Get adequate sleep. Get to class early. And take the earliest lunch break you can. Waterfield Library gets more crowded as Finals approach, so plan accordingly. Find what you love to do and jump into it with all you have. You won't regret that.

    In three sentences

Murray State University is large enough to feel like college, but small enough to still feel personal. Murray State University is one of the most beautiful and visually aesthetic campuses I have ever seen! Murray State University is high quality at a decent price.
