Its nothing to do in this town for fun.

    Food and Dining

The cafe don't have many options.

    Dorm Life

Extremely too expensive and not worth it.

    Academic Rigor

You will basically be teaching yourself.

    Tips for prospective students

Making sure you have a plan b just in case you want to transfer.

    In three sentences

Education here is poor. The University only cares for the university and not the students. The tuition is affordable.

    Campus Safety

Schizophrenic people walking all over.. lots of drunks and cholo gangs come onto campus and in the dorms. We recently had newsletters all around saying that a 45 year old woman has been breaking into cars and robbing college students right on campus. I don't feel safe having my car in a parking lot on campus. Last year i witnessed a break in where someone busted a window open. There aren't enough cameras. A lot of theft and rape happens here and hardly anyone gets caught.

    Greek Life

    Non-existant

    Clubs and Activities

What clubs? There are only like 2 real ones, the rest don't even count.

Great for these types of students

It's a great school for butch girls, there are a lot of them in this town that like to pick fights on the streets. It's a great school for poor people from the inner city because if they placed this town in the middle of a mexican version of Detroit, you wouldn't even need the beautiful mountains to look at. You just need a bag of meth and a liquor store.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

If you are a black guy, you huddle up in a crowd and yell absurd things at girls walking by and out your windows too. Possibly rape them if they give you attitude because they school will cover it up if you are on a sports team. #OnlyAtHighlands http://www.krqe.com/news/education/football-players-investigated-for-rape-

    Bang for the buck

I'd rather pay more to be in a good school and good environment than go to a mediocre school in a ghetto western mexican town.

    What to do for fun

Drink or take your car 2 hours away to the nearest club.

    Food and Dining

Can i say fat, grease, and more fat!!

    Dorm Life

Depends what dorm, Conner is the most disgusting.

    Academic Rigor

Math department and tutoring sucks! Most people who work at ARMAS don't know what they are doing and when you turn in your math homework, be prepared to never get them all right. Expect a 75% or less. Once in awhile someone good will be working there so good luck.

    Tips for prospective students

Please stay on the boring campus. If you go for walks expect to be harassed by drugged-up townies, mental patients, possibly raped or mugged by butch girls or mexican gangsters we call cholos. A lot of drunk drivers and people you can't trust. Don't hang out with people who have lived in this town most or all of their life, there is a certain kind of crazy that dwells within these individuals. It's so true about the western towns in the middle of nowhere with the crazy secrets and crazy people. Never been to such a scary place in my life.

    In three sentences

Before I came here i should have visited first or researched it more. NMHU is an very low key unknown college which is why it is not in many news articles with statistics about colleges. If you research hard or simply observe while you go here, you'll find out it is one of the highest STD rated colleges in the country, the town has one of the highest rates of sexual assault in the country, some of the worst professors, a low rated hospital with a high mortality rate, and much more. Either come here and waste your money or stay away.

    Campus Safety

Cars get egged and broken into all the time. Half of the cameras in the parking lots don't work. Too many rape cases here. Lights and glass are broken all the time.

    Greek Life

    Pathetic.

    What to do for fun

Go along with the drama. Check out our confessions page. It really shows how trashy everyone here really is. https://www.facebook.com/nmhuofficialconfessions2013

    Dorm Life

Some dorms have no air condition. Most dorms don't have a stove at all in the building.

    Tips for prospective students

    Pick a different school

    In three sentences

NMHU is not a very good school because it has a 100% acceptance rate. There are a lot of illegals from Mexico that go here, all the expelled bad kids from other colleges come here, and a lazy dean who lets everyone get away with crime just so people will keep coming here.

    Campus Safety

There is a mental hospital not too far away from campus so the crazy people tend to walk around like zombies. This school recruits people with rape charges and ones who got expelled from other colleges just so they can play on the football team, which isn't very good anyway. That is why there are emergency buttons all around campus to press when you feel you are about to get raped by a black guy or a crazy person. You also have to be careful who you have sex with. This school has a high rate of STDs.

    Greek Life

It's pointless to have a Greek life because there aren't any Greek houses and nobody knows about them or pays attention to them. This isn't a normal college.

    Clubs and Activities

We don't have a marching band, some of the clubs are legit but others just call themselves a certain name and people just sit around and talk, pretending they are part of something cool.

    Bang for the buck

Well at least you're getting a degree for cheap when you aren't learning much.

    What to do for fun

Hot springs (be careful you don't step on the heroin needles in them), hiking, partying.

    Food and Dining

The food is one step above jail food. It's almost the same thing every day, pizza, tacos, or rice with fries. The new cafeteria is so crammed together that i almost miss the old sticky tables from the last cafeteria so everyone could have their space.

    Dorm Life

Conner Hall - Worst dorms to live in. Shouldn't live there if you are a white girl. They smell bad, have no water fountains, no stoves, share the same bathroom with at least 20 people or more in each floor. Most of the rapist football players live in there. Melody Hall- The freshman drama dorm and the smoker's lounge. Almost everyone has to have room mates in the same bedroom and they all can't stand eachother. Kennedy Hall - Probably the most chill place because people drink in there but no stove to cook. New Residence Hall (Viles and Crimmin) - Not worth the amount of money it looks. It's the newest, biggest and prettiest dorms but the RAs are always snooping around, do random room checks, tell you to clean your room, and hardly ever fix things that are wrong with the wrong, but charge everyone for one person breaking the glass and pulling the fire alarm. It has very small closet space and small drawers. The rooms are tinier than all the other dorms but we're the only dorms that have a stove. The wash machines and soda machines steal your money. Family Housing looks like the projects from an inner city. It's disgusting.

    Academic Rigor

Half of the professors don't do their jobs. Even when a professor fails almost the entire class and many other people from other classes, they don't get fired because nobody wants to work at this kind of school. Most of the teachers aren't even real professors, they are grad students without a professor supervising them.

    Tips for prospective students

Prospective students should pick a different school to go to if they are actually serious about having a good paying job. This school is unknown and will probably not get most people far.

    In three sentences

This is not a very good school at all. It is a remedial school for bad kids to come get an easy and worthless degree. I don't feel like I'm at a real college, this reminds me of a public High School in a bad area.

Great for these types of students

The school is being remodeled and is becoming a better place for the students. The school now has blue lights so if there is ever an emergency the student can feel safe. The new residents hall is giving the students an environment of being at home and having their own place to enjoy. The schools parks are very relaxing and a great place to hang out and study. There is always things to do around campus and the university provides activities for the students to go to and communicate with fellow students.

    Tips for prospective students

Being at Highlands University is a really great school. The classes are very small which helps a student get one on one time with their professor. The classrooms are good learning environments for the students. The school has many places that are quiet and has good places to go off and study alone or with study groups.

    Campus Safety

The student council once tried to get the dean fired because he failed to report all the crime statistics and covered up a lot of investigations on the school. But he will eventually be found out. And there are too many crazy people walking onto campus. Some of the safety buttons are broken because of vandalism which is a huge problem here.

    Greek Life

    None

Great for these types of students

Sluts are always welcome here. And i've seen many innocent girls become sluts right when the get here.

    Bang for the buck

Even though it's cheap you'll have a hard time getting into grad school or getting a good job because the school is unknown and has low statistics.

    What to do for fun

I've seen so many people party in the dorms and get caught, but the RAs steal your liquor and drink it for themselves. Fact: I've peeked into their lounge before and they drink in the dorms.

    Food and Dining

Since they built the new student center, they are on a budget and have quite unsatisfying food. Everyone is noticing how they are gaining weight.

    Dorm Life

Conner Hall stinks like crap. literally.

    Academic Rigor

I felt like i was at high school the whole time, not college. The professors aren't that great unless you consider take home tests an easy ticket to a degree from a crappy school.

    In three sentences

The dean of the school is a very bad heartless human being who only cares about having a good football team instead of the protection of our fellow students. Don't be fooled by the new building on the front page of the school website, everything else except Viles & Crimmin Hall is dirty and cheap and out of respect for people who want a good education, I advise you to pick a different school because this was a sad learning experience for most of us.

I paid $7 for a plate of the nastiest stuff i've eaten in years. And i was starving too..

    Dorm Life

I don't live in the dorms but i heard New Rez is clean and all the rest smell bad.

    Academic Rigor

The professors remind me of West Las Vegas High School teachers.

    In three sentences

I've lived in Vegas all my life and i hate it here, I would go to UNM or something but my GPA sucked in high school so i had to come to Highlands. I regret it with all my heart and wish i tried harder so i can get out of this dang town. When i get my degree i hope i can actually get a good job out of a poor school like this one.

Campus security and police are a bunch of dumb*sses who never watch the cameras because they are too busy trying to bust people for little things like smoking weed and drinking. They never catch any thieves, vandalism, or rapists which is the biggest problem here at Highlands. After they catch you doing something little they never leave you alone and harass you. They are cocky pieces of sh*t who do they same things everyone else does but they get away with it because they are cops. I have personally smoked weed with campus security in my dorm. This campus is beyond unsafe.

    Bang for the buck

    Not worth the cheap cost.

    Food and Dining

    You'll get fat.

    Dorm Life

Living under dorm rules means you'll get charged for other people's vandalism in the dorms and you room gets checked every month and can also be searched without a warrent. RAs have access to anybody room and aren't responsible for any stolen items.

    Academic Rigor

Most of the professors aren't very professional.

One thing i'd like to point out is campus safety. Violence, destruction of property and lack of penalties is a huge problem at the school. Campus police are not trustworthy at all and are more crooked cops then helpful to the students. When they bust people for drugs they take them and use them for themselves and even drink/smoke on campus.

Las Vegas has a 35 registered sex offenders and some lurk around campus. Thats all i see is posters put up again and again warning us Have you seen this person? Contact campus police. Different people each time and I've seen the weirdos myself. http://www.homefacts.com/offenders/New-Mexico/San-Miguel-County/Las-Vegas.html Here are the crime statistics for the town: http://www.homefacts.com/crime/New-Mexico/San-Miguel-County/Las-Vegas.html

Safety buttons to push in case a mental patient or athlete is trying to rape or assault you. Which reminds me of my hometown except in my town the buttons actually work. Me and my friends pressed one and it didn't work. Some of them were vandalized and haven't been fixed since the 2 years I've been here.

    Food and Dining

TERRIBLE FOOD SERVICE!! Nasty people work there that don't wash their hands and a bunch of rude people too. The manager Michelle refuses to give people what they actually want. One time I asked for fish and potatoes and she starts to give me a greasy tortilla. I tell her I don't want that and she says The fish go with fish tacos and i'm gonna have to give you it and that's the way it has to be. I honestly don't think they are allowed to do that. I tried to report her but she's the manager so...

    Dorm Life

I've had it with the RA Destiny, she takes her job too seriously. Don't even get me started.

    Academic Rigor

uh no, teachers give out A's so easily people don't even need to try. It's like easier than high school.

NMHU should be relocated to Africa because it is poor, barely has much of a food choice, has a lot of black people and has the highest rate of STDs out of any college in this country. I'm surprised that an institution like this is allowed to be in existence and is still up and running. I feel like eventually it will have to be taken down, do to so many illegal things going on, not just with the students but the faculty, campus police and dean as well.

The campus is getting better and better. It has been getting remodeled in the past few years. The town is very small compared to Denver, but this size just make it easier to be successful and keeps you from getting distracted =). Its far from home but i Really recommend this university

    Am learning a lot

Since the classes are much smaller, i have been learning a lot. I'm a Psychology and Political Science major. What i love about my professors is that they are so in love with their subject. Nothing is better than getting professors who know what they are talking about and know how to teach.

There a lots of campus police and security gaurds! Someone is on duty 24/7 which is a good thing. When people get into fights on campus barely any consequences are given besides the fact that the students that fought are sent to their room for the night/ day which is pathetic, becausese they then get the incentive that they can fight and barely get into trouble. Campus police take a while to respond to calls!

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs yet some barely have meetings.

Great for these types of students

Any type, because there is so much diversity here! You will literally meet people from all around the world.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

    not that i know of

    Bang for the buck

I wish there were more to do here and more events for college students. On weekends many people get drunk, sometimes to where as they black out , because it's so boring on weekends out here.

    What to do for fun

There isn't much at all to do here! It's a small town with nothing to do. There are only bars here! The community doesn't host any events for the youth.

    Food and Dining

The food is delicious and is awesome. So many things to choose from. The only problem is that the prices for the meal plans are ridiculous and way too expensive. Some people can only afford to eat one meal a day.

    Dorm Life

It's actually pretty sad, because there were so many out of state students thi year that they added more than two-hundred more beds in dorms, so rooms that were designed for one person have two people in there! Some halls are very old and are poorly maintained. Wireless connection is terrible, because so many people use it and since te dorms are so old, the brick walls interfere with the wireless connection.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you have housing show you all the dorm sizes, because they only show one room per hall and some rooms are way smaller than others.

    In three sentences

Just like every University, this school needs a lot of improvement. There is lots of diversity here. Housing unfortunately false advertises dorms during oreantation.

There are many security guards, but they are not always around. It would be nice to have more. The good thing is there are some emergency poles around campus where in an emergency you can push the button and someone will come.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is a small park area in the middle of campus where people hang out between classes. It is unusual because there are a few putt-putt holes to play.

    What to do for fun

There are many clubs and organizations to get involved in. If you do not find one you like you can create your own. The town is small, but you are near a lake and mountains so camping is really fun to get away from campus. There is also a hot springs near.

    Food and Dining

The food has improved. There is a variety of foods served at the cafeteria and it is more healthy. I only wish that there was not as much fried food.

    Dorm Life

Dorms are very nice, but not much activities go on. It is usually a very quiet environment which helps. My only problem is that some of the Resident Advisers are not very good and we never see the Resident Director.

    Academic Rigor

All courses are extremely rigorous and require a great deal of work. The professors are tough, but know how to teach.

    Tips for prospective students

I would tell prospective students to visit the campus on a college tour, have an idea of your intended major to make things easier, and you can have fun even while staying focused on school.

I always felt safe on campus and in my dorms. The security searched the campus every morning and night which made me a lot more comfortable each day.

    Clubs and Activities

I was apart of the Native American Club and even a Vice President. We had a lot of fun, I thought being far away from home was a bad thing but I had some native friends I gained even related to some of them by our 4 Navajo clans. Not just for the Native Club but every club I saw or helped out with had a sort of like family feel to it. Everyone was comfortable around each other and some strong relationships even build up in a short amount of time.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is an activity every fall that they call the Rez Fest between the dorms, it is a lot of fun. Activities are always happening and there is also a lot of annual activities that are carried out.

    What to do for fun

I had a lot to do when I took a break from my studies. There is an open gym on campus and also a rec center not to far away from the campus. Even a river walk that you can walk by or do a good run. There is mountains close by that has a hot spring to go to when you feel some stress, also hiking. Highlands University has a lot of out door activities on campus as well.

    Food and Dining

At Highlands we had a pretty good cafeteria 1st semester then 2nd semester we got an upgrade to our cafeteria and it became so much better. The food was always good and the food cost didn't even come close to an arm and a leg, it was a very reasonable cost. There is always a selection of food you can choose from if your craving a certain type of food.

    Dorm Life

I stayed in the lowest costing dorm and to me it wasn't that bad. You meet loads of new people and could even have a roommate. I chose to be in a private to have my own space and to have a study place I could always go back too. Sharing a bathroom with 10+ other people has its ups and downs. But hey having water and electricity included in the room & board package each semester is great. Our dorm advisors very very friendly and I even became good friends with alot of the people who lived in my dorm.

    Academic Rigor

The courses I took my freshman year were very simple and it went step by step. Just as long as you ask questions on what your not sure about and always pay attention to the professors. To me Highlands courses were just like how a high school course would be taught. Professors are not that different from a high school teacher, they will make time to meet with you and work on everything you have a question on. They want you to pass each class with a good grade just as much as your parents and family do.

    Tips for prospective students

This school has everything a student would need to. In my case I don't like big towns or long walks around a big campus. The courses are very well taught and the professors are very flexible to your learning style and also the work you are assigned to do. It was very simple for me to get on the Dean's list my freshman year.

    In three sentences

I would say this school is a perfect to start out your freshman year of college. The tuition is reasonable and the students and staff are very friendly. If your looking for a place not too big or too small and that has a walmart near by you will like this place a lot. It isn't far from Santa Fe or Albuquerque if your wanting to take a trip somewhere.

Campus safety in the last year has gotten a lot better. This last year, there were a lot of issues concerning safety, but it has improved since then.

    Greek Life

There isn't much in the way of Greek Life. I think there might be 2 sororities/fraternities.

    Clubs and Activities

I play soccer at NMHU and a lot of the other athletic teams support us and we support the other athletic teams as well. There are quite a few on-campus clubs such as the Pacific Islanders Club, Men and Women's Rugby, and the Anthropology Club.

Great for these types of students

If you like small schools with a smaller student body then NMHU is for you.

    Bang for the buck

NMHU is very affordable in a time when people pay $10,000 or more a year for school. In the sociology/anthropology department especially, I find that my education is in good hands.

    What to do for fun

I hang out with my friends and go to the on-campus Christian Challenge group. There is the auditorium that plays free movies 3 times a week. Also, Santa Fe is about a 45 minute drive from campus for day trips.

    Food and Dining

The food at NMHU is okay. I have not eaten in the cafeteria in about a year, but I heard it has gotten much better.

    Dorm Life

I do not like living in the dorms because they are too loud, and a lot of people are rowdy late at night in the hallways.

    Academic Rigor

I'm not sure about other majors, but the sociology/anthropology department is quite challenging. There is a lot of reading for each class and the teachers expect you to go beyond average.

    Tips for prospective students

Since Highlands is in such a small town, it is sometimes hard to find things to do. Do not lose yourself in the party scene.

    What to do for fun

Join clubs, sports, because other than that there's not much else.

    Tips for prospective students

If you like to go out and shop HU isn't great on shopping places because there are no malls and the furthest you'll have to go would be to Santa Fe, an hour away, to do any shopping aside from a Wal-Mart. But aside from that being in a small town creates the atmosphere of being isolated which is great for studying and learning I think.

    In three sentences

I love the small classes, small town, and I really get a sense that the instructors get one-on-one time with every student. Instructors care about your learning, faculty give you directions if you need it, and people on campus are all doing their own activities. I enjoy it because the people are nice and I really feel I'm getting my education.

    Campus Safety

It's alright. You can get away with a lot but you can also feel a little sketched out sometimes.

    Greek Life

There's a frat and a sorority but they're not really relevant. You don't see them doing much and they don't have their own housing so there's no point to it anyway.

    Clubs and Activities

There's a lot of clubs and some of them are really unique (like fire poi and paintball). Its also really easy to start your own club.

Great for these types of students

Everybody. This school is really diverse. Its probably not the best place for you if you're stuck up or snobbish.

    Bang for the buck

This is the most affordable option for a lot of people. This school is really inexpensive and in my opinion, everything is really good quality for what you're paying.

    What to do for fun

There's a lot of clubs and on-campus activities. There's a lot of parties. There's free movies in the auditorium. There's hot springs in town a few minutes away from school. It's only a one or two hour drive from bigger cities like Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Taos.

    Dorm Life

Dorms suck because you have to live by school rules but most of the RAs are nice and its usually pretty chill. Freshman can keep cars on campus, which most schools don't let you do and they don't have parking passes or charge you for parking.

    Academic Rigor

It all depends on what you take. There's some easy classes and some hard ones, there's something for everybody. There's a lot of cool teachers.

    In three sentences

This school is really chill. Its not perfect, no school is but overall I really like it. I'm glad that I came here and I reccommend it especially for people from far away.

In a small town you have to find a way to entertain yourself. My friends and I go hiking in the mountain, there are Hot Springs we go to from time to time, and it is nice that the school shows a movie every other week or so because there is only one movie theatre which only shows one movie.

Just like the unconstitutional administration, I don't trust the unconstitutional campus police.

    Bang for the buck

If you get involved with anyone from this town you are royally F*CKED!!! Nobody else in the town or school will help you out. It's like a stay-quiet family full of inbred Hispanics/Mexicans. A brotherhood, so if you are from out of town or out of state even, you should only talk to people who are also out of town/state. Again, don't trust anyone from here, not even if it is a teacher, doctor, lawyer, or anything. The anti-social and racist politics in this state is pathetic and something needs to be done about it.

    Tips for prospective students

Message to all High School girls looking for colleges: One thing I really wish I did was try in high school. Your grades and GPA really do matter. Studying for ACT/SAT tests and taking them would be your best bet. Don't just pick a random college, scope them out first to look for your best interest or you might end up like me. I randomly chose a college called New Mexico Highlands University because I had no time. It was the end of July and this was one of the only rolling admission colleges I found on the internet. It has a 100% acceptance rate and is the cheapest 4 year university in the nation. Some of the student reviews didn't look good but I frantically needed somewhere to go out of state so I applied, didn't even visit first, and got dropped off in the middle of nowhere. If I had only researched this college more, it is located in Las Vegas, New Mexico. San Miguel County. One of the poorest cities and counties in the nation. Let me start off by the fact that I just don't understand how a college can exist in such a place like this. How the f*ck can you have an institute of higher learning in the murder capital of New Mexico according to FBI report in 2011? It is a small sketchy town where poverty has a way of creating soulless humans. It's pretty sketchy, there is a mental hospital that lets the crazy patients out and walk around town and into the dorms. The Hispanic/Mexican culture is brutal here. Most men beat the women and domestic violence rate is so high. Aggravated assault is higher than national average here and so is sexual assault. The town in non-progressive. All every does is drink and do drugs and work at shitty fast food restaurants. People from out of state, we call them townies for a reason. Don't ever date them or trust them. The first year I was here I was raped by a local townie guy that I had a relationship with. The next year I witnessed domestic violence from the second relationship and unfortunately was nice enough not to report it when the neighbors called the cops. Even when they saw my hands bleeding. Only to get cheated on and f*cked over by him a week later and knowing that I protected him at first gave him enough to say it never happened. Crime is so well covered up here and at the university because some things you have to know about the town of LV, NM: 1. You are either in a relationship 2. You are related to everyone 3. The combination of the both (inbreds). Small towns like this one don't take too kindly to outsiders. Reporting something a townie has done to you will probably get you absolutely no where because of the racist and biased administration. Some other things I learned from living here is that no matter what kind of degree you have, even if it is a Doctor's degree you are still a straight up piece of sh*t. Still trying to rip people off and act like your fellow townies, stealing, lying, cheating and breaking laws. Everyone, in a high up position or homeless has the same sketchy personality, it doesn't matter. This town and University is a hell hole with sociopathic culture and I advise every girl seeking a good education to not come here.

    In three sentences

WHOA BACK THE F*CK UP! PACK YOUR BAGS, TURN AROUND AND DON'T COME HERE. READ MY REVIEW!!!!

    Bang for the buck

If you are looking to get the most bang for your buck, Highlands is the place to go. Tuition is extremely affordable and the cost of living in Las Vegas is low. You won't find another school that is accredited and is so affordable.

    Food and Dining

The dining selection is already great but it continues to get better and better. The food choices have a great variety and the food is always fresh. Not only is the food delicious but the dining areas are great places to socialize and catch up on studying.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is a great way to expand one's social interactions with their peers. Living on campus submerses you in the college culture and there are endless things to do on campus. Not only are there plenty of social activities going on in the dorms, but living on campus leaves no excuse to miss class. It's a five minute walk to class, so regardless of whatever reasons you could think of to forgo class, none of them are legitimate reasons to skip class when you are so close.

    Academic Rigor

Highland's courses are challenging enough to provoke personal and academic enlightenment. The professors tailor the courses in a way that forces students to learn while having fun as well.

    Tips for prospective students

Highlands is a great place to further your education. The university offers several resources for internships to allow for hands on training in one's specific field of study. The community of Highlands and the town of Las Vegas is very diverse, which allows for a more well rounded experience.

    In three sentences

Highlands is an excellent university and I would rate the institution as a ten on a scale of one to ten. The professors are truly there to help you succeed and and are always willing to go above and beyond to ensure your success. The university is small enough to allow one-to-one interactions with professors but big enough to expose students to a vast amount of opportunities.

    Greek Life

Unfortunatlely we do not have any of that here at NMHU.

    Clubs and Activities

I am part of the womens basketball team here at Highlands so that is my club and activity but for other students the capmus life organization really tries to make things fun for the students. There are activities like club HU, poker night, different types of sports tournaments, free movie nights. We also have a few sorrities on campus that the students can join.

    What to do for fun

Here at NMHU during the football seasons and basketball seasons is when there is stuff to do. For example we have club HU on thursdays and for the football games there is always tailgating on campus that really makes it enjoyable for the students. In general though Las Vegas, NM is a very small city and doesn't accommodate for the collge students all that well.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria here at NMHU has gotten better but at the same time I feel and wish that they would provide more variety for the students. With the new student center coming in hopefully they will put some nice resturaunts for the students to use. I like to eat healthy, there are a few choices but they could be better for the students.

    Dorm Life

The new residants hall that I live at are really nice. We have RAs that really take care of the place. Its not your normally dorm where there is blasting music and parties 24/7.

    Academic Rigor

The academics here are no joke. They really take graduating with a degree seriously. As a student-athlete its hard to balance out the academics and sports side of things. The professors do not make things easy for an athelete.

    Tips for prospective students

Here at NMHU it is a small university. Classes accommodate upto about 75 students. Meaning that the interractions with the professors are more likely to happen. As a future student u need to take advantage of all the help that the professors/ campus has to offer.

    In three sentences

New Mexico Highlands is a very wonderful university. All the professors here are so willing to help that it has made my education experience a great one. I have loved the atmoshpere and challenges that this university brings.

    Tips for prospective students

Start applying early, if you are thinking about transferring next year start yesterday. Its important to start the Financial Aid process early as well, as this could take a little time to go through and there might be some things that come up. One word SCHOLARSHIPS, apply for them as much as you can, Highlands University itself has a scholarship application on their website just type scholarship on the search tool on the NMHU website and it should take you there. Be aware of taking the right classes for your major get connected with administration and academic advisors as soon as possible.

    Campus Safety

There have been some instances here and there, but generally, there are emergency stations all over campus and a very real awareness of necessary practices to proerly facilitate public safety.

    Clubs and Activities

I am currently not involved in any of it, but I know they don't have a theater department... At all. Like there are classes, but I haven't heard of a single performance. Sports are a big deal here.

Great for these types of students

Anyone going to school for themselves, for the purpose of personal growth and development. The learning going on here feels honest. There are a lot of students who don't like it here, who are only here on sports scholarships, but for me, I just wanted to get away and gear myself towards becoming the person I expect myself to be, and you can see these attitudes directly reflect the perception of this institution. I love it. They loathe it.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I'm still new here, but there doesn't seem to be too many preferable locations. It's a small campus and there isn't much privacy. I chill in the library quite a bit, cause it's modern, and relaxing, but there are also parks in the area.

    Bang for the buck

This is by far the ONLY option I've ever come across. I can honestly say I am comfortable and satisfied with the money I'm spending for such an exceptional opportunity at REAL higher learning.

    What to do for fun

There isn't much. The only big knock on the school and the area is there are not a lot of options in regards to pastimes. I find I spend my time reading, working, playing guitar, and surfing the internet. Shops on and off campus have screwy hours, and aren't too reliable. There are some art galleries, good dining, awesome coffee shops, a neat book store, and they play free movies in the school auditorium on wednesdays and fridays.

    Food and Dining

The meal plans are also affordable, and there are always options for everyone. It is quite easy to lead a healthy lifestyle through the dietary choices allotted to the students on a daily basis.

    Dorm Life

I'd give the dorm life two stars if it wasn't so cheap. It is bearable, and it is truly affordable, and so I give it three stars.

    Academic Rigor

I am currently a transfer student who technically still qualifies as a freshman, so I have not run into anything too demanding, but from what I understand it gets more demanding with seniority. I am in the field of english, something I'm passionate about, and so with that being the case, I look forward to challenges that force me outside of my comfort zone. Challenges that will foster the growth I expect from myself. This is not a fake gimmick school that is about just being there. Like I said, it's a place that you will enjoy if your focus is to apply yourself.

    Tips for prospective students

Be proactive, take the process seriously, but take it in stride. There will always be red tape and reasons to let it go, but there are no options I have found in my three years of searching that have truly been as affordable as this institution. It is the closest thing to being worth your time and money.

    In three sentences

NMHU is beneficial to students seeking a no frills, accessible education. It features small class sizes and passionate educators, that generally seem to care about the fundamentals of higher education, as opposed to any sort of politics. It is not fancy, but it is a nice, cheap option for in state and out of state students to apply themselves in the field of their choosing.

    Campus Safety

This school has Campus security posts place around campus that when activated will call the security to that spot. I have yet to see anyone use it but I'm sure they feature a microphone and speaker to communicate with them. Campus Security also patrols around the school so you can always just call them over by waving to them. On campus there's also a police station at the corner so I can always just walk in there when you need help.

    Clubs and Activities

This school has the standard clubs and sports teams. The people that take care of the dormitories (Resident Assistants) are supposed to have a event at-least every month per Resident Assistant so theirs usually something to do around here.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for those students that made a late minute decision to attend a university. Also to those that are short in financial aid or income.

    Bang for the buck

This school is among one of the cheapest schools. The teachers here can be very informative but that's only if you get the right teachers, like every other school this school also has those teachers where they seem unmotivated or uneducated to an extent.

    What to do for fun

For fun I hangout with my friends and usually watch movies or go to the near by gas station walking for some of their famous burritos or other snacks. There's also visiting one of the larger cities here if you have a car its just about a 45 min away to the closest one and to the really big city here its only about 2 hrs to get there.

    Food and Dining

Food here is mediocre but my friends at other schools say they receive the same standard foods, we also receive a special food that is random every day. If the food at the cafeteria doesn't satisfy you there's also the local restaurants here in walking distance. They also have on campus stores where they sell food and snacks that you can pay with using money the school gives you (Flex Dollars).

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is excellent, but that just depends on which dorm your pick. Villas and Crimin is the best dorm but also one of the most expensive. There's also dorms provided to those with a family already with a small playground for the children.

    Academic Rigor

Academics in this school are pretty good. The teachers here do give out homework but they understand that their class is not the most important or that their the only class the student has so they don't over do it with the homework or learning speeds.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure to fill out all your financial information as early as possible to make sure you qualify for the most support.

There are a lot of really good restaurants here that are locally owned and operated. We also have the usual fast food spots. My favorite is Smiling Faces yummy!

The famous Hot Springs are about 20 minutes from campus and are available year-round. There is also camping, hiking, and off-roading activities in the mountain range that is approx. 30 min from campus. In the winter there are multiple sites to go sledding and snowboarding.

    Food and Dining

What can I say, It's cafeteria food. Decent most of the time, and the staff are friendly enough. We have a Starbuck and an Einstein's Bagels which are a plus and add variety to the food situation. There is also a convenience store located on campus for you to pick up snacks and other readily available foods.

    Dorm Life

The Dorm life is interesting- depending on what dorm one is staying in. There are always activities being held in the different dorms, such as game nights and contests. If you like a semi-quiet environment but are still social, New Rez is the dorm you want. If you are a social butterfly, pick Melody, and if you are a social recluse, pick Kennedy Hall.

    Academic Rigor

I'll admit I was in fact surprised. I thought I would breeze through the courses offered here, but they were a bit challenging. just keep up with your assignments and do not miss the finals!!!

NMHU is a small campus with professors who are willing to work with you. It is surrounded by gorgeous scenery, and there is almost always something to do on campus. NMHU is also provides a good education and is pretty affordable.

Great social work program that prepares students for career. Professors understand that adult students have children, families, work and lives. Administration is easy to work with to register for classes and whatever else is needing to be done.
