Great for these types of students

Ambitious, enduring, strong charactered, determined, charismatic students

    Tips for prospective students

Study habits/ strategies are crucial! Many Students come into NMT thinking that they can get buy on the study habits and strategies from high school when in fact the work is a lot more vigorous in college, and that goes for any college or university. 1) Study 2-3 hours four every credit hour you attempt 2) Find out whether you study better alone or in a group setting and apply your strengths 3)find a tutor immediately if you are struggling. otherwise you will fall way behind. I myself, was actually one of these many students and now I am reforming my study schedule to accommodate for college, I just wish I would have made the decision before my first semester.

    Bang for the buck

academicallly speaking NMT is Constantly setting the bar higher and higher, no education goes to waste here. However, even though there are many social students at NMT and there are many ways to have fun, tech is not a party school at all but the drive to be at such a renown college keeps many students here and we still find many other , more creative ways to have fun.

    Am enjoying being here

Yes, I grew up in Denver, Colorado, so at first the move to Socorro, New Mexico was hard. Socorro is an extremely different environment from a big city but there are many activities besides school that help keep many busy. For example, I am a huge work out buff being that i played football in high school so i often use the work out facilities here, which are phenomenal. In addition to my work out schedule I have also picked up rock climbing/ bouldering since i began attending NMT.

    Am learning a lot

The answer Is definitely. This school is Strongly thrives on the academic status of its students, so of course they provide the tools and resources for student success. the classes are not as big as a regular college I am only a second semester freshman here and I have already learned that my biggest class will be about 100-125 students. Because of the smaller classes the professors get to know the students better and they are always happy to speak with a student one on one.

    Bang for the buck

In-state tuituon is very inexpensive but even out of state tuition is only 18000. Though this is a lot it is half of what some schools charge for out of state.

    Will enjoy being here

The school is in a VERY rural community about an hour south of a large city and 45 minutes from a smaller city. The town has a 9000 population, so it is very small, one must consider this.

    Will learn a lot

They have a 99% Phd professor rate. That means that 99% of the hired professors have Phd's. This is a better rate than the prestigeous schools like MIT

NERDS. OMG Tech is Nerd Central. There are dances and clubs and a nice gym and social meeting places, but underneath it all, Tech is a very geeky/nerdy school. Just be warned. Be prepared to deal with it. If you are, you'll be fine. If you aren't, you may feel very alienated. Or very at home!

    Tips for prospective students

Talk to upper-classmen. Somehow. Not the other incoming Freshmen, unless they're really familiar with the school already. Ask about which classes to take and which ones not to take.

    Bang for the buck

Tech is cheap compared to the other schools in the state. I think Tech's tuition and everything are reasonable. Except for their dorms. There is very limited housing in the way of dorms so they are expensive because of all the competition. However, the Socorro real estate rental market has adapted to this need and renting is a good option here.

    Will enjoy being here

I am already familiar with the campus and many of its students and I LOVE it.

    Will learn a lot

It depends on the teachers. I am lucky in that I have gotten to know several Tech students already and they have given me advice on which Professors to try to get and which ones to avoid. I would learn this anyway in a few years but I am glad my first semester there will be less hazardous in this respect.

NM Tech is mainly a science and engineering school. Although, you don't need to be a complete genius at physics to do well and get a quality degree. If you have a real dedication to learning science and engineering, Tech is the place for you. While the academic programs at NMT are mainly focused on science and engineering, there are also a few programs such as Information Technology and Business Management.

    Tips for prospective students

I highly recommend NM Tech. There isn't ten thousand students and there aren't parties 24/7 but the education you will receive will carry you to the peak of science and engineering. The classes are hard, but they are completely manageable with a bit of patience and effort. Don't be afraid to join study groups and go in for help if you are struggling. The professors give hard work but not because they want you to fail but rather because they want you to succeed.

    Bang for the buck

New Mexico Tech is a top-notch institution, one that is world-renowned and valued as one of the best by many. The cost of attending NMT is remarkably low though, pretty close to the lowest in the area for a 4-year program and by far the lowest in the region for the excellent quality of education that you will receive.

    Am enjoying being here

Socorro is a small town, but all the people are friendly. For the most part both students and faculty tend to stay on or near campus so there is a strong sense of community between the entire campus. It's very easy to get involved at NMT; an excellent Student Association supports a wide variety of clubs, both social and athletic.

    Am learning a lot

Academic excellence is a hallmark of this institution. Essentially all of the professors have PhDs and are experts in their respective fields. If you would like to be the best, you would do well to learn from the best. The academics are rigorous but with help from the professors and New Mexico Tech's Center for Student Success, there is plenty of help to be had if one is struggling with a particular class.

Great for these types of students

Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or any other type of nerd.

    Tips for prospective students

Find a group of students in your class who want to work hard and learn. It is incredibly helpful having some support for classes you don't understand everything in, and if you have to explain something to another student you learn it that much better. Also, find a student who is a year ahead of you. They will be able to help you with issues you can't figure out, give you advice on professors, and maybe even let you borrow a text book so you don't spend $800 each semester.

    Bang for the buck

The cost of going to tech is really pretty low compared to other colleges. Some people get paid to come here. There aren't a lot of degrees offered so if you aren't sure science and engineering is for you you might look elsewhere, but if you know that's what you want this is a fantastic place to come and not go broke doing it.

    Am enjoying being here

Socorro is a very small town and there isn't a lot of options for recreation and entertainment beyond the college campus itself. This can be good because it is easier to focus on homework, but after four years Socorro can feel pretty small. An upside is that everyone you know lives five minutes away from you at most so it is really easy to get activities going if you want. Depending on what you like, this could be a great fit for you.

    Am learning a lot

You will learn a lot if you come to tech and stick it out. Classes here are hard and a lot of students don't make it through the first year, but those that do are the ones who are willing to put the work into college. It is a really small campus so by junior year all the professors in your department will know your name and will take an actual interest in you. So as long as you are willing to put the work in, you will learn a lot. If you are just looking to get by, this probably isn't the place for you.

    Campus Safety

Lots of campus safety, and there is very little to no crime on campus.

    Bang for the buck

The college has a very low cost in comparison for the curriculum.

    What to do for fun

Tech is a serious college, for serious students, in a small town. The campus doesn't normally have student activities, but there are some. once a semester there is a campus rave, and other fun activities. Dorm olympics, eat outs, and other things of this type.

    Food and Dining

The Cafeteria is called Chartwells, and it is an all you can eat buffet. They serve all kinds of food there, and on occasion, serve shrimp and steak. there is usually burgers and pizza, and there is also Mexican foods, Chinese foods, and sometimes other cuisines.

    Dorm Life

People are very friendly, and most of them are very helpful if you need help with your classes. RAs are very nice, and helpful if you are new to the college life.

    Academic Rigor

Very difficult curriculum. Hard to acquire even a 3.5. I finished high school with a 3.8 and finished this semester with a 2.4.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are planning on going to Tech as an incoming freshman, then prepare to have little to no social life. New Mexico Tech demands lots of work, inside the classroom or out. Also, if you have scholarships earned, then i would suggest taking the bare minimum to maintain scholarships.

    In three sentences

New Mexico Tech is a very good School, and has one of the most difficult curriculum I've seen. However, the reputation of the school with companies across the globe has allowed graduates from this school to easily acquire high paying jobs. So, though the school may be very tough, it is worth it in the end.

49er's and spring fling. Our homecoming and just a time to take a break on the spring semester.

    Bang for the buck

You can not beat the cost of education here at New Mexico Tech. It is cheaper than most schools of it caliber and you are taught by top notch faculty.

    What to do for fun

It really depends on what you want to do. Tech has a lot of different clubs / activities that students can take part in. Rather its rugby, shooting, soccer. The amount of fun a student can have is up to the student them selfs.

    Food and Dining

For the last 2 years that I have attended the Food here has gotten better. Currently there is a new head chef that is making a big impact on how the food looks, and tastes. He takes the time to talk to students and he cares what we think about the food.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life depends on which dorm you are staying at. Not all dorms are the same. One dorm can be active and have all there doors open and then there is some that you might not meet or hang out with the other people in the dorm.

    Academic Rigor

The academic rigor here at New Mexico Tech is very demanding. But in the end the rigors that you go through here will pay out.

    Tips for prospective students

Dont goof off or you will not make it at Tech. Bring a computer of some sort and get ready to work hard towards your dreams.

    In three sentences

New Mexico Tech offers a wide variety of projects for current students. You can either work side by side with a professor on some kind of research project. Its these advantages that the student get while attending Tech that makes us stand out.

I'm entering my fourth year here, I know of less than a dozen incidents of mugging since I've been here. The Socorro High Schoolers will sometimes vandalize something random, but it's not devastating.

    Greek Life

One frat, No one cares. One Sorority, No one cares.

    Clubs and Activities

Some of the best clubs are at tech: Tea Club, Waffle Club, Knife Throwing Club, Anime Club. But there are also the 'Normal' ones, but I'd much rather sign up for Swing Dance, or Japanese Club, or maybe even Street Dance club. Why not?

Great for these types of students

Odd, didn't fit in much in High School/Bored to tears in High School. Computer Gamers/ Gamers in general. Out doors people do well here as well. (Only ones that get shafted are city life people).

    What to do for fun

Rock climbing, computer games, soccer, basketball, rugby, Clubs such as: Gaming club, tea club, martial arts club, and many more.

    Food and Dining

College food. Some good, some bad. Depends on the day, depends on the chef. You will learn what's safe and what isn't.

    Dorm Life

    It's a dorm, it's a college, it's simple. FREE LAUNDRY! WOOT!

    Academic Rigor

It starts off slow and full of busy work, but in the end you get swamped with lots of fascinating work (Experience for: Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics majors).

    Tips for prospective students

Keep it simple, listen to advisers. Get to know people fast, and join what you can, advertisement for events dies out pretty quick here.

    In three sentences

This school is full or quirky people who fill their time with odd habits. Professors here are mostly good, and almost all profs are willing to be helpful. NM Tech's school dynamic changes yearly, so there is never a guarantee, but it'll give you a few good stories. ;)

Once a year students Hike the M mountain carrying 50lb sacks of lime to add a fresh coat of paint on the M.

    Bang for the buck

The school is quite inexpensive even for out of state. Considering the good options for going to graduate school or industry after a bachelors degree here I would rate it number one.

    What to do for fun

Play soccer, rugby, tennis. Watch movies, video games, Barbeque, hike, bike, rock climb.blow stuff up.

    Food and Dining

It is located in a small NM town without much cultural diversity so again you will be left to make great food for yourself. The campus Cafeteria won't be winning awards any time this decade.

    Dorm Life

Pretty standard Dorm life social gatherings as frequent as could be expected from a tech school.(which means not very often)

    Academic Rigor

If you are up for the challenge you can learn a great deal from very competent and experienced teachers in class and in research. It is possible to do the bare minimum and get a bachelors. Your education will be what you make of it great or mediocre.

    Tips for prospective students

Be well prepared for the workload, especially math. An engineering degree from here may take 5 years but can be worth it if you take advantage of the special internship connections available. The town is small and there re no liberal arts students so be prepared to make your own fun or be bored.

    In three sentences

New Mexico Tech is a great school for its size. It offers real lab experience and a good relationship with graduate schools and industry. It is small however and sometimes has poor availability of classes.

NMT is located in the small city of Socorro. There are rarely any issues with campus safety. If there are ever campus safety issues, the local police (city, state, and sherif) as well as the campus police take care of it quickly.

    Greek Life

There is one sorority on campus that hosts events.

    Clubs and Activities

There are numerous clubs on campus. There is almost a club for everything! There are clubs for video games, Nerf club, paint ball club, swing dance club, automotive racing club, and many more. You can find a list of the clubs and the events they host on nmt.edu.

Great for these types of students

Great for students looking for a quality education and not just a good time.

    Bang for the buck

The tuition here is lower than any other university in the state and lower than most in the region. It is also a great college. There are endless opportunities for NMT alumni.

    What to do for fun

The campus hosts a variety of events. They have everything from guided star viewings to dress up dances. There are not many events off campus. Occasionally there will be a parade for a holiday, but the main events are on the campus.

    Food and Dining

I have not lived or eaten on campus, so I cannot speak from personal experience. I have heard that the food is OK. Similar to most other colleges.

    Dorm Life

I have not lived in the dorms, so I cannot speak from personal experience, but from what I have heard the dorms are pretty nice.

    Academic Rigor

This school is ALL about academics. NMT provides a definite challenge. This makes for long hours of homework, but in the end you will be sure to have a career.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not choose this school if you are looking to party during college. This is located in a small town and there is not a lot of party action. NMT is a wonderful school for math and science degrees. If you are going to school for a degree, rather than for a good time, I highly recommend this college.

    In three sentences

It is a demanding school, but if you make it through opportunities all over the world become available. It is a Math and Science school, so if you wish to pursue an artistic degree do not choose this school.

Our campus is extremely safe. We have 24 hour campus police and the campus is quiet. There are no reported events of rape or murder on campus in the last 5 years and no one seems to steal anything on campus. I feel really safe this campus is a small community.

    Greek Life

We have a small Greek life on campus. We have 1 fraternity and 1 sorority. Both are involved in philanthropy and are part of national chapters. The Greek life here may be small but they have a big impact.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many clubs on campus that even if you do not find one you like you can make one. All the clubs host activities and some even go on conference across the country or internationally. There's bound to be something you enjoy here.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for nerds. This school has its jocks, preps, and geeks but we all have a common love, science, math and engineering.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

We have a tradition of 49ers and Spring Fling. Both have a wide range of events from carnivals to rugby games, but the main tradition in 49ers is the M mountain run. People run up M mountain here in Socorro with 50 lb sacks of powder to pour into the M on the mountain, and afterwords there is a BBQ. You do not have to carry the sack all your self, you are allowed to do teams.

    Bang for the buck

Tech is such a great deal for its price. You will get first hand on the job experiences while still in college. I do not know of any other college that does that. Also the hire rate after graduation is around 80%-90% which is huge. Also the community on campus is amazing I really feel like this is my home.

    What to do for fun

I am a senator, and play volleyball. But there's so much more on campus, the college hosts many events from movies to comedians and magicians. We also have acts from around the country come preform at our Preforming Arts Building and its free for students! There's also many clubs that host events, such as our Waffle club hosts a waffle and tea rave. (Waffle is a club which gets together on Thursday nights and eats waffles).

    Food and Dining

The food here on campus is Chartwells, most students despise it but their steak and shrimp nights are delicious. Other eating places in Socorro have a small range from Mc. Donalds to Taco Bell to Pizza hut, but we do have some independent business owners that serve delicious food.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is nice. Most students here live on campus so the college really works hard to have nice dorms and lots of events on campus for students. The dorms are a little from the 80's but the college is working on renovations and even just built a new dorm.

    Academic Rigor

The school is hard but when you leave it is almost guaranteed you will have a job. You will also get a lot of job experience before you leave, through the junior/senior design course.

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared for the work load. Talk to your teachers and professors, they're here to help you. Also join a club or sports team when you first come so that you have an easy way to make friends that enjoy the same things you do.

    In three sentences

This school is nerd-ville. It has so many opportunities for students and for research. It is also hard work but very rewarding after to you graduate.

    Campus Safety

Seemed pretty safe, since it's a small town, but there are bombs going off throughout the day on the other side of the mountain, sooo...

    Clubs and Activities

There are a million clubs, and they have a couple of club fairs, and a career fair every semester, but it's bigger in the fall. However, clubs aren't really my thing.

Great for these types of students

Geeks, nerds, those obsessed with school, and those who enjoy math or sciences.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Not really any that I know of... They're mostly known for blowing things up, especially on the fourth of July. That and Mythbusters.

    Bang for the buck

It's fairly cheap, and the stuff you get to use, like 3D printers and super fancy computer programs are really worth it. But there isn't really a whole lot of entertainment value in the town, so it depends on your priorities

    What to do for fun

Read a book, go for a hike in the mountains, maybe spend time with friends... not really a whole lot unless you like physical activity or video games.

    Food and Dining

There aren't really any places to really go out to eat, and the cafeteria isn't great. But there is a McDonald's, Burger King, Sonic and a few other family-owned restaurants.

    Dorm Life

I have not lived in the dorms, so this is based on hear-say.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are generally very hard, but manageable, as long as you do your work and ask for help when you need it.

    Tips for prospective students

Socorro, where the school is located, is very small. Most everything I found to do there was at the school, but Albuquerque was only an hour away. And you can't rent the dorms over the summer, so you have to find living space elsewhere.

    In three sentences

It is a really great school. In my first semester, I have already been able to use a 3D printer and programs most other schools don't even expose you to until later on. They are very helpful in making sure you understand your work and can find help with any of your classes.

    Campus Safety

NMT has a very competent Campus Security team and Police Department. They are always willing to help you back into your dorm, into your locked vehicle, or get you safely across campus. NMT now has emergency poles throughout campus that you can activate and receive aid from an officer at any time.

    Greek Life

Currently, there are only two Greek social organizations. The male fraternity is Kappa Sigma-Pi Tau chapter. the female sorority is Alpha Sigma Kappa-Eta chapter. These organizations work with one another to achieve unity within the campus, provide opportunity for philanthropy, and are both young on campus. For this last reason, neither organization has a house so joining will not guarantee you living arrangements.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

M mountain run-- an annual 2 mile hike to the top of M mountain on West Campus. participants may choose to carry a 50 lb. sack of lime to the top, used later to white-wash the rocks forming the M at the top. (no one is really sure what the M stands for....)

    Bang for the buck

The school is relatively cheap for the level of education received here. This is due to the fact that so much research has been done here, many patents came from those researchers, and the school receives a substantial amount of money from these resources, cutting down on cost of attendance!!!

    What to do for fun

One of the best ways to have fun at NMT is to join one or more clubs. There are several to choose from, and most can be seen on the student government website if you are interested. Many are academic or professional, though finding other students with similar interests is nice, and also smart, academically. You may choose to participate in sports teams, including rugby, soccer, basketball, baseball, ultimate frisbee, etc, though the only collegiate sports we have are male and female rugby and soccer. I personally enjoy NMT Greek Life, a new addition to NMT. Here, you can meet people from many walks of life, several academic backgrounds, and most of them are very open and happy to befriend newcomers! Outside of school, there are opportunities for camping, hiking, breath-taking drives, etc.

    Food and Dining

Chartwells is our cafeteria chain. They provide a variety of healthy options including a full salad bar, a sandwich station, as well as a burger grill, a Mexican station as well as an Asian cuisine station. Additionally, we have a Starbucks facility on campus that is a favorite among students.

    Dorm Life

Most of the dormitories on campus are co-ed, with a few exceptions. Two are all male and one is all female, since there are so many more males attending the school. The quality of the dorms varies, but all include free laundry facilities and basic amenities. All halls include a study room.

    Academic Rigor

NMT students are generally more academically willing to work, but the coursework is difficult. Taking the proper steps to understand the material, finish homework in a reasonable amount of time, and study for quizzes and exams is crucial.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are planning on attending NMT, keep in mind that academics should be priority number one. It is easy to get caught up in other activities and socializing, but you are in college for the education. Despite this, a social life is important. If you become involved with suitable organizations, it is easier to have control over both of these important factors!

    In three sentences

New Mexico Tech is a unique environment of very intelligent people as well as many helpful and accomplished professors. Though academically the school is challenging, there are many resources in place to help every student succeed, including free tutoring, help rooms, and study groups. Socially, the environment of NMT is expanding to more than professional clubs-- greek life, sports clubs, etc.

    What to do for fun

On campus there is a swimming pool and gym and the town is very close by as well as a multitude of clubs like the waffle club.

    Food and Dining

The food is great and the dining room is very large.

    Dorm Life

The new dorms look great and the older ones feel homely and provide a comfortable and safe living environment.

    Academic Rigor

The professors jump right into the courses and make you feel excited about the curriculum and make you feel comfortable while in class or around campus.

    Tips for prospective students

Sort out all of your financial aid, books, and PO box so you can start to enjoy the experience and make new friends or meet old ones.

    In three sentences

It is a great school all faculty is very nice and supportive. Everything is within walking distance and the students are friendly, there are many things to do such as swim in the pool or go to the gym. So far my experience has been great.

    Campus Safety

Over beside Torres Hall at the southern side of the campus, is the campus police station. At the station, the security there is willing to easily engrave your name on a piece of your property, and register it if it gets stolen. Beside every building though there are blue posts with emergency buttons that one can press if they are in need it. The police are also willing to escort you places if you want to feel safer.

    Clubs and Activities

The clubs and activities at NMT are quite interesting, but fun! I myself a involved with tea club and waffle club, but there are also clubs like the cereal club, miniatures club, adventure guild, mine craft club, etc. Some clubs are more serious though such as the clubs for electrical engineering, computer science, and etc.

Great for these types of students

NMT is great for any student with an interest in engineering, technology, and other sciences and mathematics.

    What to do for fun

Though the town of Socorro is not too big, one can still adventure off campus to look around. Once in a while the town will hold a carnival or two for the students and residents to make life a bit more exciting. At the campus, there is a game room with multiple pool tables, two Xbox's, and a foosball table. If one doesn't feel up to playing these games, a simple hanging out with friends can easily suffice.

    Food and Dining

Food and dining is great for a student at NMT due to the never the always unique varieties of food. All foods also come with how many calories are in each to inform the student in case they want to keep watch over that kind of thing.

    Dorm Life

There are multiple dorms at NMT, all of which are great for a full time student. Each dorm is unique and the rooms are well sized. The residential advisors are friendly and glad to help with what ever a student needs. Dorms also occasionally hold their own activities so a student can explore and make new friends.

    Academic Rigor

There are of course challenges a student will face at NMT, but no challenge can be unconquerable. It is up to the student whether he or she decides that. All one has to do is go to a professor or advisor for help.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are a student that plans to go to New Mexico Tech, then you must be sure you are prepared to study and keep up. Also, make sure that if you have a question, do not be afraid to ask it! It is up to you, the student, to make sure you get your work done. Don't burn yourself out with too many courses, (I would suggest 12-15 credit hours), and work your way up through the years. Explore what you can also do for tech as well as yourself. Another thing, go to your advisor if you have any questions about your courses, and they will be glad to help!

    In three sentences

New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology is a great college for anyone interested in technology and/or engineering. The education there can help any student harness their abilities to help add to the growing world of engineering. All professors are available to help the student as well as tutors if they have any problems.

    Campus Safety

Campus Security is active to protect the students. They will give rides to school from most places in Socorro if you are too drunk to drive or just stranded for free, no questions asked.

    Greek Life

Greek life is small but the few who are in it enjoy it.

    Clubs and Activities

Huge variety of clubs from soccer to caving to LAN games to math.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

49ers is basically our homecoming. It is the weekend everyone drinks around the clock and participates in the many activities including the golf tournament and M Mountain Run. The M run consists of carrying a 50 lb bag of lime 2 miles and 2000 feet up the mountain adjacent to the school. The first 10 people/teams generally get a cash prize around $50.

    Bang for the buck

Tech is definitely one of the best educations you can get without plunging yourself into hundreds of thousands in debt. Four years here costs about as much as a year at an Ivy League school, but you actually get a very comparable education.

    What to do for fun

One of the quotes from people visiting Tech from the party school of State, Ya'll's parties are smaller than ours and we play games better than you, but damn ya'll know how to drink. If parting is not your scene the rock climbing in the area is amazing. Box canyon offers hundreds of sport routes and even more bouldering problems. Tech's golf course cost only $5 to play on for Tech students and if you become a member of the golf club for $40 you get unlimited play and range balls for the semester. Ruidoso is 2 hours away for winter skiing/boarding, and Taos and Angel Fire are only about 4 hours North.

    Food and Dining

Eating at the cafeteria is not the best experience (however right now the company is up for contract renewal and may get replaced). The bad cafeteria food is made up for by the amazing local food. New Mexican cuisine tastes amazing and Socorro has a good amount of restaurants that offer a discount to Tech students. From eating 24/7 at El Camino, to munching on sopapillas at El Sombrero there is always an escape from the cafeteria.

    Dorm Life

Dorms are fun and social or quiet and peaceful depending on the people you get stuck with. The dorms themselves are all fairly old except Torres which was built during the summer and is on its first year. Res life is helpful most of the time but can be a little annoying on practical stuff. Most RAs are not strict, some will even share a beer with you.

    Academic Rigor

Coming from the best high school in Nevada I was used to long days starting at 7:00 am with 4 AP classes, and 4 standard classes. Coming to Tech I think the difficulty was comparable with this routine, but there was more time to get stuff done so the stress level was lower. However for many students Tech is a ball buster, and the drop out rate is high. The workload definitely peaks between sophomore and junior year.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not slack off just because you think professors are being easy with homework and the test will be easy. Professors vary in difficulty so be very careful with how you approach your classwork.

Not the biggest dorms but are comftable

    Academic Rigor

New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology is a great school for anyone who likes small classes and having more of a one on one with the proffesors. The environment is great but at times can be geeky/nerdy. The town that this University is located is a small town of around 5000 people including the 2300 students.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is great. Campus Police are available at all hours and have 2 stations on campus. They patrol the campus at night and they check all buildings at the end of the evening to make sure nothing is amiss. Very friendly and helpful individuals. Campus Police is also available to give students rides home when they are not in safe places or safe states to get home themselves, no questions asked.

    Greek Life

There is one fraternity and one sorority: Alpha Sigma and Alpha Sigma Kappa: women in technical studies, respectively. There is an unofficial fraternity house. The groups are fairly active, but more like clubs than traditional Greek life. Both groups have certain reputations on campus.

    Clubs and Activities

The Student Government Association has some problems, especially with communication and organization, so events aren't always well planned or announced in advance. There are a lot of cool clubs available on campus though. There are of course a lot of engineering and major or field based groups like Society of Women Engineers and Engineers Without Borders, there are several honors societies like tau beta pi. We also have an LGBTQ group, a board game club, a belly dance troupe, longboard club, automotive and offroading clubs, the Transvestite Preservation Society, Striders and Riders (biking & running club), rock climbing, Astronomy club, Tea, Waffle, Cereal, and Ice Cream Clubs, and more.

Great for these types of students

Students typically labeled nerdy or geeky will probably fit in well here. The campus is very accepting and definitely has a certain nerd feel to it that most of the campus embraces happily. Students with awkward social skills may find it easier to fit in here than other schools because many current students are used to this type of behavior. Students who are eager to apply themselves and spend a lot of time figuring out their course material will do well.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

49er's and PAINT THE M! New Mexico Tech is located at the base of M Mountain, a mountain with a giant white M at the top that is lit for big events. Every October, NMT holds the 49er's celebration, an anniversary event with a lot of fun campus events, including the annual trek to the top of the mountain. Students, faculty, and local residents climb the mountain on Friday or Saturday of the celebration carrying 50-pound bags of lime, which is used at the top to re-coat or paint the M so it stays vibrant and visible. There are lots of other events like foam parties and dance performances and a student casino-night on campus. Every spring there is Spring Fling, another party weekend with lots of on-campus events. It's smaller than 49er's but has some similar events.

    Bang for the buck

Great price, even for non-residents. It's also possible to become a NM state resident and apply for the in-state tuition, which brings the cost of a semester down around $3000. The school has good facilities and great faculty, and students will learn a lot if they apply themselves. More than worth the price, especially with such a small school environment.

    What to do for fun

There are lots of clubs on campus, and there are regular school-sponsored events. The school has a golf course, and there's a good variety of fine arts and physical recreation classes available. Students also hang out at Walmart, because NMT is in the small town of Socorro and there isn't always a lot to do besides school work (which will keep you pretty busy!). Some students drink, and there are parties fairly regularly, but it's certainly not a party school.

    Food and Dining

The dining hall is not bad, but you do get tired of it quickly. Decent options most of the time but the food is not wonderful. They have theme and culture days a few times a semester which are fun and have great food, though. The staff is wonderful, friendly and helpful. They're very good about accommodating special dietary needs. There is also an on-campus coffee shop which serves some food, smoothies, Starbucks coffee, and other drinks and snacks. The staff there are great as well, helpful and courteous.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are noisy and each one has its own culture. The laundry facilities aren't very good, and rules in the laundry room aren't enforced. Strict guest policies in the women's dorms, but not so much in co-ed or male housing. Rooms aren't a bad size mostly, but they are not kept up very well. Meal plans are required with campus housing.I had bad experiences with dorm life, but not everyone here does. Campus is very safe though and the Residential Life staff are very willing to help correct any issues that crop up during the year.

    Academic Rigor

NMT is a phenomenally difficult school. The classes force you to learn something to pass, and there is no way around it. It is very possible to do well, but it takes a lot of time, effort, and commitment.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't go in expecting any classes, even general education requirements, to be easy. Everything at this school is tough. It's more than worth it if you can stay on track. Spend time getting to know your instructors and they will help you out more than you can imagine. And don't be afraid to be yourself here, there is a niche for everyone.

    In three sentences

I love the friendly and nerd- and geek-accepting atmosphere at Tech. Students and staff are friendly and helpful and most of the people on campus are very tolerant and accepting of others, although many students are somewhat socially awkward. The academics are very tough and rigorous but students learn a lot and have may great opportunities.

    Campus Safety

We have a vary safe campus. Emergency polls are installed all over campus and our police patrol the campus area everyday and every night. If some one happens to get hurt the nearest hospital is less that a couple miles away and the situation will be dealt with.

    Bang for the buck

New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology has the lowest cost of tuition in the state and one of the best engineering programs in the U.S.

    What to do for fun

Their are many geek things to do for fun. Their is a game room on campus with pool tables, Foosball, and video game consoles. There a lot of outdoor activities to enjoy such as camping, hiking, cycling, running, rugby, golf, swimming at the pool, rock climbing and bouldering.

    Food and Dining

The quality of food offered by the school can vary as does any cafeteria. There is only one place to get actual food on campus and that is at the cafeteria.

    Dorm Life

The dorms at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology are pretty diverse. One can find a dorm ranging in quality and price but all are quite expensive compared to living off campus. All people in the dorms are of the same gender and no co-ed living exists because most of the population is male.

    Academic Rigor

New Mexico Tech. is extremely difficult. One needs to spend most of their day doing school related activities. Even those graduating with honors will be challenged. Most courses cover a lot in one lecture and it is good to review what one has learned at the end of the day. It might be a lot at first but getting a degree is definitely possible just tough it out and study hard.

    Tips for prospective students

1.) When first coming to New Mexico Tech. one should get to know the campus. Learn where each building is and what that building's main focus is. (ie. Library, Geology, Math, or Writing building.) 2.) One should learn about the multiple resources on campus. We have research resources found through our library, online resources throughout campus, and a health center for minor medical resources. 3.) Students should learn about their account at New Mexico Tech (NMT). Each student is given their own email, school account, and some teachers require other online accounts for their courses. 4.) Communicate with others. This is very important. One should get to know other students, faculty, and company representatives. In order to get a head start on finding a job one needs to network with others. 5.) Work hard. NMT is not an easy school. There will be stress and lots of work. 6.) Learn to relax. Find something to do in your spare time. There are lots of mountains and lots of college students. Go hiking, get to know people, just make sure to have fun once in a while.

    In three sentences

New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology is one of the best schools in the U.S. because one can get a great education for a really cheap cost in tuition. The faculty is outstanding and because it is a small college there is time for one on one questions with the teachers and students. The campus is also beautiful and the atmosphere is positive, each student helps one another in studying and while doing homework.
