Great for these types of students

NCCU is great for any time of student. This school has something to offer to everyone no matter your skin color, religion, race, or sexual orientation. Everyone is bound to fit in and make something of themselves.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't get caught up in the party life and hanging out all the time...if you do you will end up paying for a real expensive party (tuition). I don't believe that any party is worth $4,000-$5,000. Also, learn to make friends and don't sit in your room all semester or you will miss out on a lot of fun opportunities. Any college student will tell you: COLLEGE IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT...if you want to have a good time then you will versus if you sit in your room all the time, then your college experience will be realllll lame!

    Bang for the buck

This is a really inexpensive school and this school offers plenty of scholarships and work study's for students.

    Am enjoying being here

There are so many organizations and clubs to join on campus that there is no reason why anyone should ever be bored or not enjoy being here. There are also plenty of parties, sporting events, forums, or anything else always going on. There are other schools around that you can visit as well.

    Am learning a lot

Most teachers are passionate about their jobs and they love being at North Carolina Central University. Teachers are always available outside of class to offer you help whenever you need it. There are also so many other resources to use on campus whenever you feel that you are falling behind in your studies

Anyone with an interest in learning.

    Tips for prospective students

    Study hard, then have fun.

    Bang for the buck

After scholarships and grants, the costs of tuition and books should be extremely manageable.

    Am enjoying being here

NCCU always has lectures, plays, athletic events and more, so to try and take part in whatever you can to help you enjoy the college experience.

    Am learning a lot

First tip: Get to know your professors and don't be afraid to ask questions. That's what they're there for.

Great for these types of students

Students who have great school spirit and are very involved in extra curricular activities.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't procrastinate and there is no excuse to not have your homework in on time because you are given a syllabus of all of your assignments on the first day. The only thing is unlike in high school, teachers don't remind you when assignments are due so you have to be very responsible and on top of your work.

    Bang for the buck

I think the in-state tuition is very affordable and there are a lot of resources for any issues you may have or incur so it's all worth it.

    Am enjoying being here

Like most people say College is what you make it. I personally don't like to go to parties, but if that's your scene then there are parties almost every week and weekend. If you're like me, there's still other things to do on campus like play cards, pool, and just hanging out in the multipurpose rooms, along with a lot of programs about different topics.

    Am learning a lot

Being a student here, it is required to take a Dimensions of Learning class that teaches you about the history of NCCU and you begin working on a portfolio of your resume and practice cover letters. The first year you get most of your core classes out of the way, and it gets easier as you go along. The teachers are doing a great job and are very helpful outside of class.

    Tips for prospective students

I will give the same tips to prospective students, as my family. friends, and church members gave to me. Never go in with the mindset that college is time to let loose. Doing that could put you into an academic mishap, which could result in not being able to continue due to lack of academic achievement. I will also say this, NCCU's financial aid office is always crowded the day of move in. I recommend that if you are getting any financial assistance that you take the necessary measures early. Once students receive access to NCCU Banner/MYEol that is the best way to keep track of financial aid. Lastly, have fun, but not to the point your grades suffer.

    Bang for the buck

Though North Carolina Central University's tuition is higher than most other HBCUs in the state of North Carolina you do see the ways in which the money is being distributed. Not only have they built a three story state of the are cafeteria, but a new bookstore, parking garage, School of Nursing, and residence hall are being built to relieve pressure off of other dorms. Books are also available. Since I have been here there has not been a shortage. NCCU will also give back to the students by allowing us to sell back our books at the end of each semester receiving half of the initial book value in return.

    Am enjoying being here

When I first got to North Carolina Central I was very, very nervous, because I was not sure what to expect. So far with one year, and a semester under my belt I have since over enjoyed my stay at Central. As a current member of the Screaming Eagles Organization on campus my sophomore year has been 10 times better than my freshman year. I recommend anyone to choose North Carolina Central University to get the full experience of attending a Historically Black College/University (HBCU)

    Am learning a lot

North Carolina Central University so far has provided me with the tools to succeed in the world of law. As a current sophomore who has just finished my first semester, I do hope that my second semester will continue to go as i had hoped. Teachers at NCCU do look out for you. From experience I was given the opportunity to bump a Psychology grade up one letter. Not only are they willing to work with you, but they do give you a fair amount of time to complete assignments. Lastly, I will leave you with this. You will learn everything you will need to continue into you major courses. Whether that be public speaking, or writing a speech. NCCU will ensure you are well equipped with those skills.

Great for these types of students

Anyone who is ready to learn and is willing to do what it takes.

    Tips for prospective students

Stay focused and remember that you are in college to be a student first. It is okay to socialize and hang out but don't forget to do your work. It's OK to be different. Remember that getting behind on your work is easy, it's the catching up that is hard. Schedule to meet all of your professors so that they know you by face not just name.

    Am enjoying being here

I am very conservative and I don't really associate with anyone because I am having some bad experiences. Overall I enjoy the college life.

    Am learning a lot

I am learning a lot of new things and I becoming very mature and more independent. The school is amazing and the professors are great.

    Tips for prospective students

PRIORITIZE PARTIES ARE OK, BUT STAY FOCUS DO NOT WATSE YOUR REFUND CHECKS(THE EXTRA MONEY WILL COME IN HANDY) BE CAREFUL OF WHO YOU CALL YOUR FRIENDS, IT'S COLLEGE BUT SOME PEOPLE STILL HAVE HIGH SCHOOL MENTALITIES ENJOY YOURSELF, THIS IS A ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY DO NOT OVERLOAD YOURSELF WITH CLASSES GRADUATE, ON TIME IF POSSIBLE

    Bang for the buck

With the economy the way it is, it seems as if prices everywhere are going up. I feel as though what I'm paying is not bad, however, I do wish it could be a little cheaper.

    Am enjoying being here

I LOVE college, but I LOVE NCCU so much more. Besides being a beautiful campus, the staff and students are great and very welcoming. Central was not my first pick but I'm very glad that I decided to attend.

    Am learning a lot

College is what YOU make it. if you go to class with an open mind willing to learn for your teachers, peers, and even your own experiences you will be surprised how much information you will gain.

Great for these types of students

For students who want to get out of their city and get the HBCU experience, this is the university for you.

    Tips for prospective students

Learn time management and do your best to find a group of friends to spend time with.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition isn't high for in-state students, so it's average. For what you learn, I don't think it's that bad.

    Did enjoy being here

Coming from a bigger city, Durham is just okay. The campus itself was only eventful during Homecoming. The weekends will be dead and unless you find your group of friends, you will be bored here quite often. This school just wasn't for me, aside from the majority African-American population, which I did like.

    Did learn a lot

NCCU did teach me a lot, I can admit that. Some teachers were better than others, but overall, the educational aspect was pretty well rounded. However, most of what you learn about life is taught outside of the classroom. NCCU will do well in teaching you about safe sex, time management, and even African-American heritage.

Great for these types of students

-Those who don't want to be in an urban environment -Those who want to go to an HBCU

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

We have pre-dawn a few times a school year. Pre-dawn is a dance that starts late at night and ends early in the morning. For example, it might start at 10 PM and end at 6 AM. The party is located in the recreation complex in the gym. Theres a pre-dawn during the beginning of the fall semester, during Homecoming, Spring, etc.

    What to do for fun

There are usually a lot activities on campus. We have a recreation complex with two levels of cardio and strength machines, an indoor basketball court, a weight room, and an Olympic sized pool. There are generally parties most week nights whether its at a club or a house. There are many clubs in the area. Southpoint Mall is located about 15 minutes down Fayetteville Street. Also at the mall is the movie theaters and restaurants.

    Food and Dining

The food is generally good. We have one dining hall on campus, W.G. Pearson. The dining hall has breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late night. Breakfast has really good omelets and french toast sticks. Lunch is usually pizza, hot dogs, burgers, fries, and whatever is in the home cooked station. Dinner is usually the same thing. There are other food locations on campus such as Starbucks, Pizza Hut Express, World of Wings (W.O.W.), and Freshens. You pay for these food options with your flex dollars from your meal plan.

    Dorm Life

All the dorms (we call them residence halls) have kitchens, multi-purpose rooms, computer labs, and of course an office. The residences of each hall are normally of the same classification. Baynes, Eagleson, Richmond, and New Residence II are all Freshman residence halls. Chidley and Ruffin are Sophomore residence halls. Eagle Landing is a junior and senior residence hall.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on your major and who you take, your classes may be challenging or a breeze.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are from out of state, have over a 2.5 GPA. If you are from NC, have over a 2.3. Learn to motivate yourself early! When you get to school, you have to wake yourself, take yourself to class, plan out your entire schedule, and more. Do your community service early. NCCU has a 15 hour community service requirement per semester.

    In three sentences

North Carolina Central University is located in Durham, North Carolina. It is a historically black university (HBCU). Some of NCCU's popular majors are Mass Communications, Criminal Justice, Nursing, and Business.

JESUS STEPS!! They are really tiring. I get a good work-out just by coming up them coming from the gym.

    What to do for fun

Actually there is a lot of things you can do for fun. First you have to get up, get out, and get involved. There is greek life, athletics, modeling, etc.

    What to do for fun

NCCU has a lot of activities to join for a variety amount of people. They have greek life, dance teams, modeling troupes, and so much more! NCCU is also close to downtown so if you are 21 and up there are good bars near by. If not, chapel hill is about 10mins away and the night life on Franklin street is amazing! SO being in between the two makes NCCU a good school to attend.

    Food and Dining

The cafe food isn't the best but with the price of it to live on campus it is edible. Chicken Wednesdays, and Fish Fridays are what everyone enjoys the most.

    Dorm Life

This will be my first semester living on campus so I'm unable to judge it at this time. I will let you know as soon as I find out! ;)

    Academic Rigor

It gets hectic around midterms and exams but it is not too bad. If you have classes like ethics, any history class, and English the papers are rather difficult but with text books you'll be able to get through it!

    Tips for prospective students

Prospective students, should stay focused on studies because it is easy to get caught up in campus life. If you have a little will power than it will be easy to do so and succeed. When refund checks come out, don't go crazy like most students do because they easy forget those are LOANS that will have to be paid back later in life. I suggest save refunds or use them wisely on necessities. But overall it's college, you must enjoy yourself while trying to better yourself for the future.

    In three sentences

North Carolina Central University is an amazing college if you wish to succeed in classes, while keeping a social life. The balance between the two is amazing, along with the professors and other students as well. I highly recommend NCCU, not only as a HBCU but as a great college in general.

    Campus Safety

Every campus has their own safety issues we definitely have ours. I don't feel unsafe walking around campus. If you're aware of your surroundings, not bragging about your valuables, and not parked in a sketchy area you will be fine. I've never had any problems personally; however, the people who have 70% of the time put themselves at risk.

    Greek Life

We have a big greek bowl and recently one of our sororities won the step off championship in Charlotte this past year.

    Clubs and Activities

There are sooo many to name you can definitely find one that has something of interest to you or that caters to your major. If not, theres a lot of advisers who will support you in creating one.

Great for these types of students

Looking to better yourself in a great environment. Also to enjoy a balance between a social life and education with people more than willing to help guide you.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Aggie Eagle Classic ( Rival Football Game/Homecoming) Predawn ( 11pm-6am) event/party Week of Welcome

    Bang for the buck

Great school for pricing when you consider all that is available. If you don't use the resources given to you, then it definitely won't be worth it.

    What to do for fun

Often theres a common misconception that there's nothing to do on campus. There's LOTS to do on campus if you mingle with people or join clubs. The Student Activities Board also holds weekly events to get people involved

    Food and Dining

It is college food but the cafeteria people try to make your dining experience enjoyable. They all have different personalities. It is buffet and there is a variety of foods each day. However, there are certain days specific food will be sold. Also, once a month theres a premium night where it ranges from oriental to lobster/seafood.

    Dorm Life

I never stayed on campus because I'm from Raleigh. I have had friends whom I've visited who enjoyed their dormitory. They are mostly renovated and clean. Chidley (an upperclassman dorm) recently got a gold medal because of its exceptional quality.

    Academic Rigor

This varies by your major. I am currently a Biology/Pre-Med major and I;ve compared the work load to neighboring Duke students and its just as rigorous if not more. Being a HBCU professors stress academics more than anything else.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you get your financial aid taken care of first thing! You can not blame anyone but yourself if you aren't proactive. Its COMPLETELY your responsibility to take care of business. Make sure you develop a relationship with your professors and peers, a positive one at that. Take advantage of all the FREE tools, seminars, mentoring programs, tutoring etc available on campus.

    In three sentences

Overall, this is a very nice school. I was hesitant to attend at first because I went to a PWI (predominantly white institute) for high school although I am african american. I truly have enjoyed my experience at NCCU and will continue out the rest of my education here.

There is always something to do on campus you just have to get involved and check your email daily.

    Food and Dining

The food is not that bad it is way better than the food they serve in high school. You have options to eat in the student union where there is a pizza hut and a WOW.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are nice here but they bugs outside are scary and BIG !

    Academic Rigor

North Carolina Central has a high standard for academics. You have to keep your GPA at a minimum of 2.0 to not get in academic trouble.

    Tips for prospective students

For prospective students I advise you to stay on top of everything, you are no longer in high school therefore nobody is going to be looking after you.

    Campus Safety

It's an open campus, always be aware of your surroundings anywhere; being on a campus is no excuse to not protect yourself at all times.

    Greek Life

    Greeks always fun.

Great for these types of students

The campus is literally great for all races and nationalities. Very diverse even though it's an HBCU.

    What to do for fun

There is always club events and campus parties and neighborhood pool parties. You can go eat, bowl or run over to Frankie's fun park and go cart it up.

    Food and Dining

There are several wonderful affordable places for students to eat. A restaurant called Gigi's has the best meals for about $6.00, um um good. There is a restaurant called Bowicks Arch on the same street as the University that have the best soul food for the lowest prices. And of course there are the popular restaurants like chili's an applebees with the two for twenty's and half off appetizers. Really great food around campus; you will not starve.

    Dorm Life

Dorms can be tricky; it is an open university and NCCU has had it's share of neighborhood altercations that have spilled onto campus a few times. NCCU has a shortage of dorms and upperclassmen are forced to find housing around Durham. Some apartment complexes offer good housing at affordable prices, but rent is more than mortgage payments so be aware of what your getting for the money.

    Academic Rigor

Excellent programs and courses to help you graduate with the best up to date knowledge.

    Tips for prospective students

My biggest tip for prospective students is to quickly get out of university college. All transfers and incoming freshman need to learn there course schedule and the proper advisers and professors to associate themselves with once you enter the university to ensure you only spend four years at NCCU.

    In three sentences

NCCU gets a rating of 4 stars. They have teachers who honestly want to see you succeed. NCCU gives you the resources to excel after your college career.

We have 24 hour campus security.

    Greek Life

We have an awesome new Greek Bowl where sororities and fraternities often put on shows. Greeks are pretty active during the school year.

    Clubs and Activities

There are parties every week and to most transportation is provided. NCCU offers many on and off campus activities.

Great for these types of students

NCCU is great for students who want to attend and HBCU and be surrounded by not only by African-Americans but to be surrounded by a diverse community. The university is also great for students who want to excel academically and professionally according to their mission statement.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is pretty average for Central to be an HBCU. Professors are nice, the campus is nice, NCCU is worth it.

    What to do for fun

Durham is not a big city so there isn't too much to do. NCCU usually offers numerous activities on campus as far as off campus, there are two malls which are not too far from campus and they are nice. There are usually parties near campus or at clubs. Lots of students usually travel to Raleigh or Chapel Hill for different activities.

    Food and Dining

Food and dining services at NCCU is okay. Some food is good and some isn't.

    Dorm Life

NCCU's dorm life is great, living on campus gives you a chance to meet new people. The dormitories are pretty decent to live in.

    Academic Rigor

NCCU has great professors, who are eager to teach and help their students grow. Most of NCCU's professors offer one on one sessions such as tutoring so that students may get extra help or understanding outside of class.

    Tips for prospective students

Tips I have for prospective students are to make sure NCCU is going to benefit your future, research and get to know as much as you can, take tours, explore their website, get to know current students as well as alumni.

Meditation room, nail salon, barbershop, and blood drives are things NCCU has that I don't see at other universities.

    Bang for the buck

I'm currently on the fence, right now I can't complain but tuition MAY be going up. The money includes 2 shuttles that run all day around the campus for lazy people, it includes $700 for the student health building (also for medications), usage of the gym and swimming pool but the life lessons are priceless.

    What to do for fun

Predawns, night clubs, game rooms, cookouts, events from greek life, SGA and SAB parties, 10:40 break (music, fun and sometimes food in the morning and sometimes at night), basketball, footbaal, softball, baseball, tennis, volleyball, swimming, weight lifting and so much more.

    Food and Dining

It's an Historically Black College University so there is always something different and flavorful in the cafeteria. They even have charts up showing the number of calories and have lines for vegetarians, diabetics and others that want to eat healthy! My only complaint is that it gets old after about 2-3 months BUT there are maybe 4 others restaurants ON campus

    Dorm Life

Sucks...For me anyways. I'm just overwhelmingly neat so it was an adjustment for me to get used to the bathrooms, the kitchen and even the laundry rooms. As far as staying informed, and having a big group of family it is excellent .

You will definately have to learn the criteria. If the techer doesn't require a text then you'd better believe the tests and other assignments will be intense and if they don't provide powerpoints, READ, READ, READ ...even the charts, tables, side notes and know the objectives.

    Tips for prospective students

Just always keep organized and on top of deadlines. It took me 2 years to understand the importance of a planner. Also, get to know the professors so that you are more than just a name and it makes it easier to talk to them.

    In three sentences

On a 1 to 5 scale, 1 being the lowest I would rate NCCU 4. I love the school spirit the school shows, the teachers for the most part are very personable and the classes are very collaborative; meaning that debate and voicing opinions are encourages in classes. I would refer anyone to the school for academic purposes!

Make sure that you stay on campus at night fall. Do not walk alone. There are emergency polls on almost every corner, do not be afraid to press that button for any reason.

    Greek Life

Greek Life is very exciting. You will always see the greeks on campus. They are always stepping and chanting.

    Clubs and Activities

Too many to count. You will more than likely find something that fits you and you will enjoy it to the fullest.

    What to do for fun

There are many activities that occur everyday on campus. Step shows, Wild Out Wednesdays, Spring Fling, Homecoming week, Pre-Dawns, etc. All these events are the most popular, and they are definitely something you do not want to miss. The club life is also fun. There are shuttles that come in handy, if you don't have a car.

    Food and Dining

Chicken Wednesday's and Fish Friday's are the most famous days in the cafeteria. It is pretty much full on those days. The cafeteria is nice, it is only about 3 or 4 years old. It has multiple lines so you won't be in there all day, a variety of tables so you will be able to sit anywhere, and televisions so that you will have some entertainment will you are eating.

    Dorm Life

I stay in Baynes Hall. It is the oldest dormitory on campus. The elevators are always getting stuck and the building definitely needs an upgrade. But there are many other dormitory that you can choose from and will definitely enjoy. Chidley, which is the newest dormitory, and Eagle Landing, which you have your own room, a full kitchen, a living room and 3 other suite mates, are the most popular. Ruffin Hall is also very popular, this is where all the athletes stay.

    Academic Rigor

There are always emails notifying the students of a crime that happened on campus. Whether it be robbing, mugging, or molestation, this campus is never short on crime. There's probably 6 campus police but they seem to never be around when something bad happens. We have emergency button towers spread around campus but that is the only safety precaution we have.

    Greek Life

There is a strong Greek population here. The Greek bowl is where all the Greeks have their plots. It's a pretty cool area. I can't speak much about the Greeks because I'm not in a fraternity.

    Clubs and Activities

Not enough clubs or activities. There is modeling, and a couple of intramural sports.

Great for these types of students

    Urban African American

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There's chicken Wednesday's, and Fish Friday's like any HBCU.

    Bang for the buck

Honestly, ANYONE would have a much better experience at ANY other college. There is no bang for however many bucks you'd have to pay to attend.

    What to do for fun

Nothing. Besides dorm parties and clubs, which every campus has, there is nothing really to do on campus. The one activity that most people do on the weekends is go home.

    Food and Dining

The quality of the food is decent. I would consider it slightly better than that of your average high school. In comparison to other Universities, our dining options are fare more limited than any other I've visited. The cafe serves the same stuff weekly, and there isn't much fast food around.

    Dorm Life

Elevators frequently break down which could be a big problem if you live in one of the upper floors of Baynes or Eagleson. Janitorial services don't work on Saturday and Sunday so the trash frequently gets backed up and the smell floods the hallways. If anything breaks or you need some sort of service to your bathroom or doors/locks it takes at least a full wek if not 2 to get it fixed.

    Academic Rigor

If you join University Honors Program At Central, then you will have access to a lot of useful academic materials that aren't available to other students. Also the specialized Honors dorm provides good places to study, its own library, and a close-knit environment unlike the rest of the campus.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not attend NCCU. Unless you get a full or partial scholarship and you have NO other offers, I wouldn't consider going here. Even if you DO get a scholarship for that school, I would still consider you rethinking accepting it.

    In three sentences

The severe lack of diversity causes many social issues which in turn makes the university feel less as a place of learning and growing, and more like a temporary pause on one's life. The buildings are old and rickety as well as the sidewalks. Also in the summer and fall months the campus is overrun by larger than usual cockroaches who seem to walk the sidewalks without caring about possibly getting squished.

    Campus Safety

On our campus, we receive crime alerts almost everyday. Someone has been held at gunpoint, harassed, robbed or their stuff has been stolen. Campus police do what they can to protect students; however, they cannot see everything that happens.

    Greek Life

Since we are an HBCU, are Greek life is not that diverse. However, Greeks participate in certain events and community service as well as the students. First and foremost, they are students and they make an impact on campus life for others.

    Clubs and Activities

We offer over 800 clubs and organizations for all interest and majors. Also, if there is not a club that you identify with, you can always make one of your own. Being involved in clubs allow you to not only network, but keep your grades intact. Clubs and organizations also introduce students to new opportunities and other future organizations at NCCU.

Great for these types of students

North Carolina Central University is great for all students, because we do not discriminate and we are a liberal arts institution, providing all types of majors. We appeal to athletes and students who aspire to go to law school, business school and nursing school.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

An unusual location on campus would be the founders house and the NCCU centennial garden. The founder's house was burned down before my attendance and now they have and exact replica. It's kinda creepy when entering, because everything in their is designed the way he had it. Remember, the school was founded in 1909, that many years ago and the house stands as a representative. The garden just enhances the houses features.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition raises every year and right now, we are looking at $6,000.00. There are also other fees that contribute for the service of the students. Cost of attendance is worth it, because you get what you put in for. Also, with the new buildings on campus, students can enjoy newer dorms and facilities.

    What to do for fun

Literally for fun, get involved. Most organizations go out of the state, like Washington, D.C. They go to other countries, or they have competitions, poetry slams, zumba, community service, etc. it's also a great opportunity to network with others for internships, college recommendations, etc.

    Food and Dining

The food mediocre once you get used to it. There are healthy choices within NCCU's dining service and various types of foods. The cafeteria staff work hard to serve the students and we also have website that allows students to see what's on the menu. With the wide array of Chinese, Mexican, Italian and Caribbean students can enjoy themselves and get a taste of different foods.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life can be very strict for Freshmen entering into the university; however, your RA will assist you with almost everything. It's fun at times when students get together and have study sessions with one another. however, co-ed visitation ends at 12:00 A.M., therefore, you must plan ahead.

    Academic Rigor

As far as this subject, you work at your own pace and make sure your adviser becomes familiar with you. As long as you stay in top of your school work and register for classes on time, you'll be fine. Also, remember to start out with at least a 3.0 GPA and build up from there each year.

    Tips for prospective students

To prospective students, i would say to first find a mentor on campus who can give you the in and outs of campus life. get involved, this way you can always have open doors and opportunities for yourselves to maintain. Lastly, i would say stay on track with you financial aid, because if not, it can become a hassle.

    In three sentences

North Carolina Central University deserves a grade of a B. Reason being is because faculty, staff, and administration are working to expand the university, as well as, diversity and student morale. NCCU has been the number one HBCU since 2009 and we are struggling to keep it that way with all the changes and advancements.

We feel safe, but there have been incidents where certain residents around our campus will walk on, unsuspecting students and adminstartion might mistake them for actual students. NCCU does have campus police. There are emergancy poles around campus that you can press for help in case of an emergancy. Every crime that happens on or near campus emails are sent to the students about what happened, where it took place and a description of the suspects. You should try to protect yourself at all times because campus police doesn't always come through. Always make smart decisions; don't walk alone at night, keep pepper spray on you at night, lock your door whenever you leave your room, don't drink around people you barely know; those are a few suggestions.

    Greek Life

Each sorority and fraternity has something about them that everyone knows them for. Their colors, strolls and the people in them. The Greeks on campus are respected and a few are looked up to.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many choices of things to get involved in. Flyers are posted everywhere all the time to catch the eye of people with many different interests. It's all about finding something that's right for you.

Great for these types of students

This HBCU has a comfortable environment even for students that are not African American.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There's a statue of the founder James Shepard in the center of campus in front of the Hoey Administration building. Every type of building on campus is named after someone that's made an impact on the university in the past.

    Bang for the buck

Budgeting is really important in college. You have to watch how much money you spend. Most of it can go on food and shopping. As many temptations are all around it's ok to treat yourself occasionally but not all the time.

    What to do for fun

Partying is always going on at NCCU on and off campus. Club promoters throw events for college students at nearby clubs and sometimes even provide transportation. Partying is not for everyone, so people can always catch the city bus to the mall, movies or restaurants with friends. Some events on campus are free and open for anyone to attend.

    Food and Dining

The Food and Dining services overall at NCCU are pretty good. The food in the cafeteria, which is paid for by your meal plan, is good when you're new to the university. As time passes, it may not taste as good and they start serving the same meals too often. In the student union, there's a Pizza Hut and Wing place where you can use flex dollars and the food tastes much better.

    Dorm Life

NCCU's dorm life has its ups and downs. The freshman dorms are in the worst condition because they are the oldest on campus, but the rest are much nicer and newer. The better the condition of the residence halls, the more expensive.

    Academic Rigor

The academic rigor varies between majors and classifications. Upperclassmen say the workload and its level increases each year. Certain majors are hard but if it's something you really want to do you should push through it.

    Tips for prospective students

Time management is an important thing to learn your first year of college. If someone has a poor balance between social life and academics, you may find it difficult to keep your grades up. Find the proper balance in having fun and keeping grades up at the same time.

    In three sentences

One of the great things about NCCU is that it's in the center of the state and the triangle area. It's in Durham, which is a city right next to the capital, Raleigh. Overall it's a great institution with a variety of types of people and a great academic system.

    Food and Dining

The food here is awesome! I love the pizza and on premium nights the fish is delicious. When trying to eat healthy, the wrap and salad bar is the place to be. Fresh produce and meats are a great choice. If you have a late class don't fret, NCCU also has late night take out, anyone can go but it is mainly for the students who weren't able to make it to dinner during the normal hours, because of their class schedule.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life is alright, NCCU has good housing for the most part but some of the other dorms are not in good condition. The residence hall that I am staying in, is one of the nicer dorms for freshman; but the other dorms that surround me are not as nice. Housing for upperclassmen is the best, they get suite style living and sometimes even off campus housing.

    Academic Rigor

I think that the education you receive here is great. The teachers here take there time and try to explain and actually teach. Yes the classes are large but the professors actually like to interact with class and get to know their students individually. There will be a couple of humps along the way, because some of the teachers are not from the United States, therefore it is difficult to understand them; so you would really have to pay attention in class. I find it a good thing though, because the more you pay attention the more material you would actually learn during class hours.

    Tips for prospective students

If you plan on attending NCCU, bring your walking shoes. Although NCCU is not a very big campus, alot of the classes and dorms are spread out. You may live on one side of campus and your class be on the complete opposite. Be prepared for unexpected weather changes; being that this university is in North Carolina the weather is constantly changing, one moment it the sun is shining and the birds are chirping then the next moment it is pouring down and the sun has stopped shining. Last but not least, pay attention to everything around you. Even though you may feel as no one is watching you, remember there is ALWAYS someone watching you; especially upperclassmen and adults. You want to be respected at all times and you also want to show that you carry yourself in an orderly fashion. So watch your behavior and the way that you dress, because opportunity can come knocking from any direction.

    In three sentences

North Carolina Central University is a great school to attend; the campus is beautiful, the people are friendly, and the atmosphere is homey as ever. Waking up to a beautiful sun rise and walking to you're dorm from class to the worlds greatest sunset. North Carolina Central is the place to be.

    Academic Rigor

This school is very academic based. They want you to succeed, they make you have at least two meetings with your advisor each semester to ensure progress is being made in academics. Your not allowed to receive a D or below in any class, if you have a D at mid-term they assign you a tutor.

    Food is unhealthy

    Dorm Life

    bad neighborhood, high crime

    Academic Rigor

    Terrible, no academic challenges

    In three sentences

I have to say that NCCU is one of the worst institutions I've ever attended. I was a transfer student who has also been to a community college and would say with all honesty, community college outperformed NCCU in every aspect possible, yet the cost of attending is 90% greater. First off, the staff and faculty are incompetent, they can't get basic things right like insuring a student has all of their files transferred to the right department. Upon attending I found nearly all of my files had been misplaced which cost me time and money to help them straighten out the issue. Despite having a hard time getting everything cleared I decided to stay to give it a try, and I have to tell you it was one of the worst mistakes in my life! When I met with my academic advisor she was completely unprofessional, the entire session I don't think one intelligent word came out of her mouth, she insistently played music in the background of our entire conversation, which to me was rude and disrespectful. When I finally started attending classes I found out quickly that I might of been the only one in the entire class room who was actually there to learn something as much of the students appear to not care about their education at all, I'm sure the biggest reasons is because NCCU promulgates their sports and band as their strongest precedence with academic performance coming in dead last. Not only that but the students constantly use profane language to describe everyday situations, many of the students were disrespectful and lacked basic morals. Not to mention I was nearly run over in the parking lot by a student because they do not yield to pedestrians. Naturally I was expecting to have a better experience with the teachers, but was gravely disappointed to find that they too were disrespectful and lacked competency. I had to even drop one of my classes because the teacher was so ignorant and disrespectful, her behavior was so outrageous and unprofessional. This decision greatly impacted my academic standing and financial ability in classes that I was already out performing the material. To make matters worst, the teachers are constantly giving take home assignments, even exams, in which students are given weeks to complete, that in no way challenges a students knowledge of the material. The classes are profoundly easy to pass because the teachers have no expectations of the students, nor do the majority of the students care. Parking on campus is also another negative aspect, it cost at least $150 to park per semester and you are not even guaranteed a good spot to park, that's a huge issue because the surrounding neighborhood is riddled with violence and crime which even the university openly publishes in emails sent out to the students about the most recent active shooter in the neighborhood. Overall I would never recommend NCCU to anyone unless you are going because you like sports, sports seems to be the entire reason this institution exists.

    Academic Rigor

I can only speak for law school. The work load is very demanding even compared to other law schools.

    Tips for prospective students

Look at other schools in the area before deciding on the law school here. There are other factors to consider other than the inexpensive tuition at Central. See above comments about grading. Also in respect to that, Central students are not allowed outlines or notes in exams where other area schools do allow it. Again, makes it much more difficult to get the grades than it has to be.

    In three sentences

I can only comment on the law school. the grading system is out of whack! Most law schools in the area are on B curve while Central is on a C curve, making it more difficult to compete.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Not many unusual traditions that I can name

    Bang for the buck

Make the best out of your college experience by bringing your personality to the table. It is exactly what you make of it. It doesnt always cost money to have fun when you have friends or a supporter by you. Fun times can consist of finding someone to stick by you through the thick and thin. If you are the kind of person to stay in a shell then you have to find some kind of way to open up because college life is better when you spend it with those who are going in a similiar direction that you are. Most importantly I came to Christ through my college experience and it was the best decision I could have made in my entire life. I came to know Jesus Christ my sophomore year in college and He's been faithful to me every since. Keep God first in your endeavors and commit to Him all that you do and your plans will succeed. Also if you ever get a chance read Proverbs 3:5-6.

    What to do for fun

Hanging out with friends studying was one of the major things I did throughout college. I enjoyed weekends going to the mall, the movies or to social events hosted by local churches or etc. I tried to always use the weekend as a getaway to relax. Sometimes even going out of town would help refuel me for the upcoming week.

    Food and Dining

Being so used to home cooked meals was something that I had to stray away from when i came to the dining hall. The cafe for the first year of my experience said enough. It was ok because i paid for it but I spent more money eating fast food or buying my own food then with my meal plan.

    Dorm Life

For the first year or so i would recommend staying on campus. Not so much of all four years. Its better to manage time but if you are somewhat like me and want to experience a little more challenging life I would aim for off campus living. I stayed on campus all four years but off campus life to me seems a little more complex. Rooming with someone was not always the best.

    Tips for prospective students

Keep records of all documents, create long lasting relationships with professors and network with your fellow classmates throughout your college experience.

    In three sentences

This school is very educational I would recommend anyone looking to further their education to come here. It has broaden my perspective on the future endeavors. As well as opened opportunities for pursuing my dreams.

    What to do for fun

There is always something to do on the North Carolina Central University Campus. You can visit the bowling alley and play a few games with your friends while listening to music. You can also visit the Student Union where you can play video games on different game systems, or play pool on designated pool tables, or play table tennis, or you can play chess, checkers, Uno, or just regular playing cards. Also found in the Student Union are two fast food restaurants. There is a Pizza Hut, and a Wing Zone. If you don't want to stay on campus, there are two malls that you can visit by catching the bus (which is free for students). South Point Mall, and Northgate Mall are the names. There is even an IMAX theatre located in South Point Mall that students can attend for fun.

    Food and Dining

The café at NCCU is awesome. There is always a variety of food. There is a pizza line, a subway line, a hot dog and hamburger line, a pasta line, and even an oriental line where there are specials and a personal chef that makes them. The campus café also has a back section where you can get take out.

    Dorm Life

Living in a dorm can be either a great experience, or a bad one. It is what you make it.
