Categories Comments Great for these types of students The school is great for any and every student. I can truly say that I can recommend any student to come here. It can be a wake up call for some and just a brilliant experience for all. The school is so diverse that there is something there for everyone and their own personal needs and wants.
Tips for prospective students If you would like to go to Northern Illinois University, some tips I can personally give you are to stay on top of your real priortities whether it is classwork, financial aid, club and sports deadlines and practices, and etc. If you have trouble with school work, please get a tutor! Don't make a mistake like a lot of students do and slack off just because you don't understand the work. That's what you are paying for so take advantage of all the resources that the school provides. I also want to say, stay away from people who will make a negative effect on who you are because there are a lot of students who will take your mind off of what you came to school for. Practice proper hygiene, safe sexual conduct (if involved), do not drink and drive, and be prepared for the culture shock. Most importantly, be positive and learn how to maintain happiness while attending this school. Happiness just makes the college experience that much better.
Did enjoy being here At times you do get home sick or at other times you may feel tired of living the campus life-but overall, you will love being there. There is so much you can do in a day that you'd wish one day lasts 100 hours instead of 24. The whole atmosphere and feeling-of-belonging made me enjoy the school itself. And every time I left off the campus and walked back onto it, I would just look at the school buildings and think to myself, this is my second home right here!
Did learn a lot I learned how it is to be on your own and how different it is to be away from the people who you used to depend on the most when you were back at home. I learned a lot about how to manage time and money because being a student living on campus can be very expensive and of time's essence. You have to learn to make time to have fun because you have to stay so focused on doing homework and meeting deadlines. I learned educationally as well. Depending on your class size can really determine your level of attention you give to your instructor. So when you do pay attention you can really learn a lot. i learned that college is nothing like high school. It opens your eyes tremendously.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students People that have good social skills will fit right in. Although it has the reputation of a party school, do not expect to be there very long if your only intentions are to party. However, if you do what is expected of you, you will earn the grade. Oh, stay away from MEE 101.
Tips for prospective students Study hard and don't underestimate the material. You may think this is not a difficult college, but it can be very challenging. Even Communcations 101 was difficult.
Bang for the buck Only $830/class. This is very good for a non-community college. The drom prices are what will hurt (nearly $1000/mo.), but appartments are only $275/mo. And with the top Accounting program and one of the best business colleges in the state, it certainly is a hefty discount.
Am enjoying being here Sometimes it does get a bit boring. However, the people, at least the ones I am with, are great. It is a friendly environment and it is easy to meet people in classes, since many of the smaller classes end up being close. The social scene is fantastic. By the end of the first semester, almost everyone knows each other. This is something that does not happen at such a large university.
Am learning a lot Some of the classes are pretty difficult and take a lot of studying, but this is a good thing. I have learned more from my Engineering class than in any other class I taken my entire life. The class sizes vary. I have had some classes with only 15-20 people, but others with 100 people. The teachers are mostly great. They understand that they need to entertain students, but leave the actual work up to them. They leave it up to you to earn the grade.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you're open-minded and enjoy a relatively diverse student body without being one in a massive group of people, Northern is for you. It has a homey, small-town appeal with better dining and a great art program for what you pay.
Tips for prospective students If you live in Illinois, be sure to check out any of the state schools before considering out-of-state universities--and their tuition rates--unless you have a scholarship of definite worth.
Bang for the buck Great deal for how much tuition costs! My parents were very pleased with my choice, and even happier that it cost them a third of what they had originally intended on allotting me!
Am enjoying being here Despite the slightly chilly winters, the social aspects and family atmosphere of Northern is lovely. You really feel at home as soon as you move into the dorms your first year, and a variety of clubs and organizations are offered to fit your tastes in recreation. There is a wonderful recreation center on campus, and many cultural events are offered throughout the year for students, often free of charge.
Am learning a lot Fantastic learning atmosphere with interested (and interesting!) professors who are willing to work one-on-one with students to help them achieve their goals.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Anybody really. But in my experience, if you don't party... You'll be bored... But that's college for you, I guess
Tips for prospective students If you want to go to Northern remember college is a totally new experience, be open minded. No one is really around on the weekends or those minor holidays. Get to know the NIU website, that will solve any problems you have.
Bang for the buck College is expensive. Northern should be cheaper. I don't enjoy having to pre pay for food or having to pay for football games when I don't don't attend any of them. Northern needs to figure out where people are actually spending their money. SAVE UP FOR BOOKS!
Am enjoying being here I miss home a lot sometimes. Once I found the right friends I began having a good time. On the weekends there isn't very much to do but party. Not being a party-er I am a little bored at times. The people here are kind of nice, but you really need to find your niche.
Am learning a lot I have learned more about myself then I have about any subject. I have learned who I am and the types of people I like hanging out with. Living in the dorms has been a great experience, and the living community is great. Most of the teachers are easy to get a hold of and are really helpful.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Students who don't care about learning. Students who just want to say that they went to college and got a degree.
Tips for prospective students Communication between departments is dreadful. Information will likely be lost, you'll incur strange charges, and ending running all around campus in order to accomplish anything
Bang for the buck If you can't afford to pay for this school outright then good luck with the financial aid office. I took out the maximum amount of loans that I could just to attend because my parents couldn't afford to assist me and was miserable that I had put myself in debt to be taught by TA's rather than actual professors.
Did enjoy being here I didn't live on campus, but DeKalb is a decent town.
Did learn a lot While I did learn while attending NIU, the coursework was not challenging. If you are passionate about learning don't attend this school as you will breeze through your classes.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Great for any student; I'm a transfer student and I feel right at home at Northern Illinois University. More at home than I've felt before.
Tips for prospective students My only tip for future NIU students is to have a wonderful time, apply yourself, and most important be yourself!
Bang for the buck Northern Illinois University gives you what you pay for, in every aspect. The resources on campus are outstanding. There's a student center full of recreational activities, educational information, food, and tools for being a student.
Am enjoying being here The entire area is full of fun/extra circular activities for students. What I've found out is that the people are kind and friendly for someone who's new. Every night during the week there is something to do: whether its attending a sporting event, making an appearance to the recreational center, observing educational/guest speakers, or just even hanging out with peers.
Am learning a lot Since attending Northern Illinois University I have learned a tremendous amount of information. Previous college's reminded me of high school level agenda; here were working towards becoming better and brighter students, who are at the top of the educational abilities.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck Whatever you do, do not let your money go to waste. We're college students and we're here for a purpose and that's to further our education. Don't let the freedom drive you away from your priorities. Your academics come first, then your social life. It's a shame to see how so many students fail out of college, simply from partying to much, and losing thousands of dollars in loans and or scholarship money.
Will enjoy being here I know for a fact that I will enjoy being here. There's always something to do and being away from home, you have ten times more freedom than you did before. I know it will be a culture shock to go from living at home to being on my own but, I know that with focus I'll be able to handle the change.
Will learn a lot the academics here are amazing and they also have a really good reputation. They have plenty of different clubs and organizations available that are strictly for education purposes. Your college advisors are there to help you and if your willing, they will also be willing to go out of their way to make sure your college years are successful.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck College is expensive no matter what but I truly believe that Northern is well worth the money.
Am enjoying being here It's a very welcoming and safe campus. I love being able to walk where ever, whenever and having people offer to walk with me. It's extremely friendly.
Am learning a lot The major classes are great! However, the general education classes are taught poorly so attempt to take those at a community college other wise the university is great!

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Hardworking students who want an enriched and diverse culture to study in.
Tips for prospective students Tour the campus, and see why you should become a NIU Huskie!
Bang for the buck The university is a great supplement to other state schools that cost much more.
Am enjoying being here It is hard being away from home, as it is at any college. The UNIV 101 class helps students adapt to being away from home. Soon however, the floor you live on becomes family.
Am learning a lot There are amazing professor's here that understand and will work with you as a student. They are engaging and truly spark the creative and imaginative mind.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck You learn a lot, its worth the money.
Will enjoy being here The campus is very nice. Buses can be taken around the whole campus. There are a lot of food choices around the campus as well. The students are very friendly. I have also heard the tailgate parties are crazy.
Will learn a lot I visited NIU for an open house and got to visit a lot of the faclities as well as the teachers. The teachers seem to want to help students and very friendly. Some classes are small so indivudual attention is there, but some are very large.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you are a student who wants to exceed and wants help getting there then Northern is for you. If you are a party person they have great parties but if you don't plan on being a student no need in coming.
Tips for prospective students Tips for prospective students are do your best freshman year that is the easiest class year. Also do not I repeat do not put partying first because Northern will kick you out. Half of the people I came in with our gone.
Bang for the buck I believe they charge entirely too much for the dorms but for your education the price is right. You get everything you need in order to succeed.
Am enjoying being here DeKalb is a place that is surrounded by cornfields. Northern is a enjoyable place if you have friends. If you don't have friends then this place can get pretty boring.
Am learning a lot Northern's classes do have the most updated information and the teachers will help you learn everything there is to know about a subject. Although it may become frustrating there is always someone to help.

Categories Comments Tips for prospective students Living in a dorm is required for freshmen, so be prepared to do that. Dorm life isn't bad so long as you make some good friends. Don't slack off in the beginning, and don't think just because you had it easier in high school it passes the same, it's not. You have to adjust accordingly. Don't blame the professor solely, do everything in your power to make an effort with them first.
Bang for the buck I believe NIU can be a little expensive. I myself think some of the benefits of being a student there could be an option. Dorm life takes up the most expense, with the meal plans. And while we pay a good amount of money for the internet, isn't that great. The wifi is horrible and even with an ethernet cable it can be annoying because of the log in system requirements. I realize many students access the internet at all times, but being a university, they should be able to compensate for it. Cable channels change without consent, and can be a pain to first manually install. NIU is creating a new dorm in hopes of increasing enrollment numbers. I think it is great, but I also think they should improve on other major complaints first. All and all NIU has many good qualities, but many things they can improve on as well.
Am enjoying being here It is a very spread out campus, sometimes running around the campus can be a bother, but as long as you set your schedule up right, there should be no problems. This will be my third year living in the dormitories and I must say I don't really want to live there again, but signed up right away without thinking. I'm not saying the dorms aren't bad, I'm living in the same dorm wing, same floor since Freshman year. And it's nice, most people that live in the dorm are nice and getting a good roommate is always best. The most I dislike about the dorms is the meal plan. Depending on your living situation, it isn't that bad. I recommend living in the dorm for new students.
Am learning a lot The teachers at NIU each have their own way of teaching their courses. Some better than others, it is all based upon how you learn. Even if you and the professor do not see eye to eye, there are great resources available on campus to aid you, such as the various major help rooms, tutors in the dormitories, and the library. Or even fellow students. Most people seem willing to answer a question. The assigned textbooks are good at explaining the material, and usually the professors base their lectures off of the chapters in the book. And then base their exams on your notes and suggested material.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students NIU is a suitcase school. It is located so close to home that many students commute or go home on the weekends.
Tips for prospective students Take as many college credit/AP classes as you can. It allows you to have a lighter workload and you can take more fun classes, classes that you are actually interested in, rather than the required basic classes.
Bang for the buck School is not cheap. But NIU has a renowned education program known for producing quality, ethical, successful students into the working world. And for such a well-known and respectable school, you are really getting your moneys worth here.
Am enjoying being here I love being here at NIU! The social life here is amazing. The convocation center hosts a variety of great artists and shows. And the students show tons of Husky Pride!
Am learning a lot The classes at NIU can be very challenging. Along with the material you learn in class, you will also learn very good time management skills, public speaking skills, and other useful skills that are essential for the real world. You learn how to interview, how to network with employers, ethics, etc.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you love diversity and an accepting campus attitude then Northern Illinois University is the place for you. You can be who you are and not have to feel self conscious about it. Also if you like Quidditch... then lucky for you NIU has a team!
Tips for prospective students My biggest tip for prospective students is to check your Z-id email. This is how the university contacts you, and if you don't check it you can miss a lot of important deadlines. Make it a habit to check it at least once a day. My other tip would be to get involved in any way you can. It will help you adjust, and will be fun!
Bang for the buck NIU has great financial aid assistance, and as a state school it is very affordable. I have had a few payment issues this year, and the Office of the Bursars and the Financial Aid Office have both been quick to help me in any way they can. The school wants you to attend and get all that you can from going to NIU and they are willing to help you pay for school, or help you find a way to pay somehow.
Am enjoying being here NIU has a great sense of diversity and acceptance. There are all sorts of people, they differ race, ethnicity, personality, style, likes/dislikes, and numerous other things. There is always someone who shares a common interest with you. I am very involved in the university and would not have it any other way. It is a great way to get involved and make lifelong friends.
Am learning a lot I am still in my general education classes right now. There is some learning, but there is also some review of material I had learned in High School.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Theater. Visual Arts. Music (Specifically Steel Pan). Psychology. Business.
Tips for prospective students Apply early. And try to get into a specialty floor. These are floors that are prioritized during registration for students who are of a certain major. I live on the Theater floor, in what is called the Art Dorm at Neptune North. It's awesome.
Bang for the buck Tuition is around $20,000 a year and rising. Scholarships are just about as easy to get as at any other state school: if you're smart you should get something, but you've got a LOT of competition. It's worth it for the theater kids. We get a private conservatory education at a state school price. And our Junior year we get to go to Russia for a semester for just a few thousand more on that semester's tuition. Boo-Yah!
Am enjoying being here You will have to come to the campus and see if this is the one for you. I live in the Chicago land area and NIU (for almost everyone here) seems to be the college that is separated enough that you can feel like you're on your own yet a close enough drive that coming home (and receiving free meals when your parents visit) isn't a huge deal. The people are friendly, and with 25,000 student and staff you'll find someone to talk to. And if the idea of a gigantic state school scares you, don't worry; for some strange reason that I haven't figured out yet, NIU has a very relaxed, homey atmosphere about it that doesn't make you feel like a herring lost in the Atlantic ocean.
Am learning a lot I'm a theater major at NIU. If you're looking into acting (or any of the arts for that matter), NIU should be a choice for colleges to look into. I've been learning under Katherine Gately, and I'll have her husband Richard Poole next semester. They own the Gately~Poole conservatory in New York, one of the highest ranking acting conservatories in the nation. And they're only two of the many teachers teaching here. The music program is tops (NIU is considered the best program in the nation for Steel Pan players), and the Art program is well staffed and supported. This is a call to all prospective art majors: NIU will make your Major seem like less of a silly thing and more of a career.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Any student who can be independent and meet many people and be a part of something.
Tips for prospective students Have an open mind and be open to try any organization because I would not be where I am today without mine. Be familiar with the location of buildings before your first day because I showed up to my classes late a lot the first week because I was not familiar with the campus.
Bang for the buck Northern needs to figure out their financial aid issues because between books and living fees, it can be very expensive, and I am having trouble at this moment even affording to go to Northern next year based on loan issues.
Am enjoying being here Throughout high school I did not have the best of friends or even many people I can trust but going to Northern allowed me to meet the best friends I could ever have. I worked at an on-campus job my first year that helped me network for the future. I also joined Greek Life where I found my closest friends.
Am learning a lot I believe going to Northern was a good choice because not only am I learning academically but I am learning in other aspects that are needed to be prepared for the real world. If you take the right classes with the right professors (ratemyprofessor.com) you will learn a lot. Outside of the class I am learning to have better time management between my social and academic life. Even though Northern is not one of the most challenging schools, you must stick with your work because you will not breeze by.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students NIU is great for ALL students. But I suppose I would definitely recommend those going into theatre, because it is supposedly the best program in the region. Also physical therapy, I believe this is the only school in Illinois that has both undergrad and graduate programs for physical therapy.
Tips for prospective students Ask questions! Do not think that curiosity is a bad thing and do not think that anyone would ever judge you for being confused. Also, constantly check your MyNiu, this is where updates will be for dates and deadlines of payments, class applications, and more. Always be sure to visit your academic advisor and counselors, and never stop applying for scholarships! But calm down and have fun, don't get too overwhelmed. ^_^
Bang for the buck The main absolutely awesome deal, is that of our meal plan. I am on the lowest level meal plan with $60 a week, I never have any reason to be hungry and I almost never run out of food money. Clubs are often free or at least relatively cheap. And as for activities, Monday is one dollar bowling! What could be better! And it's no cost to visit or rent from the multi-story library or use the computers in the labs, plus free printing!
Am enjoying being here NIU really is a fun campus to be on. There are many friendly people and a lot to do. Along Lincoln, a main street next to campus, has many places to eat and hang out. On Sycamore there is an even wider variety of places to eat including Noodles, Steak and Shake, and the infamous Ollies among other places like the movies. Directly on campus we have the Husky Den where there is billiards, TVs, video games, and bowling! Not to mention all of the clubs you can participate in, the Fraternities, Sororities, we even have Humans Vs Zombies!
Am learning a lot I really am learning a lot here at NIU. The teachers here are great and are always true to their office hours and very willing to help you in understanding concepts that stump you. If they are too busy or you are in a large class there are always tutors around and willing to aid you in learning as well as studying. Some tutors may be paid for private services, but free services for every department and class are easily found and prove to be very helpful. In addition to this, there are always ways to double check to be confident in your selection in professors there are reviews to hear what other students have to say about the teachers that they have had in the past.

Tips for prospective students Become engaged in the campus
Bang for the buck The total cost and tuition is cheaper than most in-state schools.
Am enjoying being here The campus is very fun and vibrant. If you look around there's something fun to do everyday.
Am learning a lot I haven't really learned a lot new stuff because I'm just starting my gen-ed courses, but all of my teachers are well-educated about what they teach and help you understand the subject better.

Categories Comments What to do for fun if you're over 21, there are bars, if not, don't fret. recreation center has basketball, there are swimming pools, outdoor courts and activities. there are a lot of activities through the outing center. cherryvale mall is about 35 minutes away. there is a movie theatre and a stage theatre in dekalb.
Food and Dining there are many different food avail abilities around campus, all you can eat, a-la carte, and a grab-n-go. if you don't have time to sit down and eat something before class, you can take it wilpth you. there is brunch on the weekends and the dining halls are open from 7am - 11pm.
Dorm Life niu does not call the rooms 'dorms.' instead they are called residence halls. niu's important aspect to them is the sense of community. residence advisors? we call them community advisors. there are many options of living on-campus.
Academic Rigor depending on your program the difficulty of the classes will vary. as a business student, you cannot procrastinate, you have to stay ahead, attend every class and study for every exam. some teachers don't care too much, but others make attendance mandatory. it's your money, don't waste it skipping class.
Tips for prospective students stay ahead in your school work and most importantly get involved! my first year was really boring, so my sophomore year i joined alpha phi omega and that was on of my best choices: to get involved.
In three sentences niu is geared toward being a community, not being a huge school where not everyone knows each other. all around campus there are ways to get involved, athletics are great and niu has been a great experience for me! the business program here is awesome as well.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are cops everywhere. However these cops are actually really chill and are there to keep you safe. They understand that students drink on the weekends and do not bust you for minor incidents. However, they do their job pretty well and are always on campus.
Bang for the buck Could be cheaper, but I know that they offer alot of scholarships so take advantage of those!
What to do for fun There are parties at Northern almost every week. However, if you are not much of a partier, there is a movie theatre, and bowling alley in the neighboring town. Other than that, there really isnt anything.
Food and Dining Dorm food is okay. The good thing is that each dorm generally offers a different type of food so you can always go to another dorm to get food. Otherwise, there are a variety of restaurants within walking distance that are also nice on the weekends or whenever you want a change.
Dorm Life Speaking from my personal experience, im glad that the dorms were a requirement for freshmen. It was a great way to meet new people and also get used to the campus. I lived in the Business Careers house which was a good idea because everyone on my floor was taking the same classes so we would help each other out. It is important to be on good terms with your roommate because it will come in handy!
Academic Rigor Honestly, the difficulty of your classes depends on your major. My friends who were elementary education majors definitely had an easier option of courses to take compared to someone for example, in the business department (elementary math vs. business calculus). But like every school, most gen ed courses are fairly easy and generally the classes more specific to your major will be more difficult.
Tips for prospective students If you go to any school with an open mind, you will have a better time. Make sure to stay focused and have a good balance between partying and studying because honestly, balance is key.
In three sentences Northern is a great school academically. If you make good friends, stay focused on academics, and get involved either in the greek life or just in clubs and groups you are interested in, you will have a great experience and will gain alot from your time here!

Categories Comments What to do for fun There's always something to do. There's parties, a near by movie theater, you can go out for ice cream and the list continues. NIU also have multiple events going on during the school year like, dance battles, fashion shows, and so much more
Food and Dining The food is very good in the dorm buildings and even inside the student center. they even have well known restaurants near by in the neighborhood like, Apple Bee's, Buffalo wild Wings, Shark, Mc Donalds and many more:)
Dorm Life I have not personally experienced the dorm life for myself yet. But when I went to visit my cousin I will always stay in her dorm room and it was very nice.
Academic Rigor Northern Illinois do not play around when it comes to academics. You do not do well you will be put on academic probation, and if it continues you will be dismissed from the university. even though they will dismiss you, if u feel like you are capable to turn yourself around Northern Illinois University do accept you to appeal you dismissal.
Tips for prospective students There's only one thing you should keep in your mind while you are in college, stay on track and don't get distracted.
In three sentences When It comes to a great college with excellent advisors and counselors, It's Northern Illinois University. They provide multiple opportunities in which are available to everyone to help them to become successful adults. Every one is so friendly and they make u feel right at home.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Every dorm has security at night and NIU has its own police force along with the Dekalb police who are active in the community.
Greek Life Greeks are very active on campus and are fun to see. They have probates all year round, and walking down Greek row is a very exciting thing to see.
Clubs and Activities There are so many clubs on campus. From student council to Harry Potter Quidditch clubs, Northern has an activity for everyone.
Great for these types of students Northern appeals to all groups of people. It's a very social school and even the education pushes students to be more sociable by putting them in groups for certain classes.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The blackout game where all Northern Students wear black and go to a night time football game is probably the best game of the season.
Bang for the buck Huskie bucks will be incredibly helpful in your life while attending NIU. You use Huskie bucks to do laundry and most restaurants around the town will accept them as money, even McDonald's!
What to do for fun There is always a party going on somewhere in Dekalb. Students can go bowling at the Student Center for $1 or take the Huskie bus to the movies or out to eat. There is a bar for 21 and over students called Molly's that everyone seems to really enjoy. The school also host entertainment and has parties and concerts in the rec and Convocation Center.
Food and Dining The food at Northern is actually very good. Some days they serve a baked potato bar and others they have chinese night. There is always something different and good to eat. All the dorms serve food all day but have certain hours of service on the weekends. Lincoln and Stevenson are open the latest closing at 11 pm while the other dorms close at 9.
Dorm Life Dorm life is so exciting and fun. If you are a girl i advise you to live on a coed floor because girls are surprisingly dirty and full of drama. Stevenson has some of the best rooms but is one of the most expensive dorms. My favorite dorm is Lincoln because there is always something going on in there.
Academic Rigor The teachers are great. There is a lot of group work but that only helps to motivate students to keep work ethic up. All the teachers have reasonable meeting hours and because students seldom visit during their hours they're usually available when you visit.
Tips for prospective students Do not live in grant south it is very dirty. Choose classes that are in the same vicinity of each other because some of the buildings are far away from each other and your dorm. Try to get to know a little about your roommate before you move in with them.
In three sentences Northern is a great school to attend. The education is great and the town is really a college based town. The school also really adapts to your needs by providing things like the free bus system for students to get around.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There are plenty of things to do around Dekalb without going too far.
Food and Dining The food is decent, just depending on the day and location!
Dorm Life With the new dorms being there, that would be the best living arrangement. The dorms are just how you imagine and the people are extremely friendly!
Academic Rigor The academics are what you will expect going into college, just always do your homework!
Tips for prospective students To just make sure you join as many clubs as possible, explore your opportunities dont stick to something in your major definitely branch out. You will meet many people when doing that, also make sure to study!!
In three sentences This school is very diverse. Everybody on campus is very friendly and welcoming. I love going here, wouldn't change it.

Categories Comments Campus Safety NIU's campus makes sure safety is a priority. There are several services to ensure any student that they can be safe. There is a Late Night Ride for students who need to get to a destination when its late and they don't feel safe walking. There is also Walk Safe Program that has a trained member to walk with you to your destination. The campus also has emergency buttons that are located in several spots throughout the campus.
Great for these types of students Northern Illinois University has something for every type of student. From those strictly focused on academics to those who enjoy basking in Northern's social scene., and everything in between.
Bang for the buck NIU definitely gives you what you sign up for, that is, if you sign up a college that challnges you to work hard and earn your degree with intructors that become part of your academic life.
What to do for fun NIU has many different clubs and events to explore. Aside from the university sport teams, there are club sports that anyone can join. There are events like fashion shows, open mike nights, and different types of socials (mostly in the first couple weeks of school).
Food and Dining The quality of the food is honestly typical dorm food. Most likely exactly what you would expect when you hear about dorm food. Stevenson dorm has a mall-like food court that serves a wider variety of food than the current other dorms (the newest dorm hasn't yet opened). In Douglas, there is the Dog Pound Deli that allows you to customize your sandwich. Every dorm building has its own dining area, but there are also various restaurants on/very close to the campus.
Dorm Life It always depends on which dorm you choose. Several of the dorms have been renovated at NIU. The recently built dorm is amazing and much more up to date, compared to the classic Neptune, Douglas or Lincoln dorm. The cost of each dorm might influence which one to choose, but whichever is chosen, dorm life is basically the same. There will be floor mates from all walks of life and dorm food that might have you using the Rec center everyday.
Academic Rigor Depending on which instructor you choose (always use ratemyprofessor.com), the class can turn out any way. Overall, I'd say there are a few easy classes, typically a simple gen ed. The way you learn will help determine how challenging a class will be.
Tips for prospective students Make sure to scope out your classes (at least the buildings) before the first day of class. Learn the bus routes, they come in handy when you don't feel like walking, but keep in mind that they get crowded in winter.
In three sentences Northern is definitely a school that has just about everything. It isn't too big, but not too small either. Northern has services, organizations and staff that make it simple to adjust, wherever you come from.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Since the shooting in 2008 (yes. there was a shooting), the safety on campus has gone up a lot. There is a police station right in the middle of campus and there are a ton of emergency towers around campus as well. If you are scared of walking to your dorm at night, then you can call the station and they will drive you to your dorm! Or if your friend if drunk, they can take them too with no questions asked.
Greek Life I am not going to be in any of those houses, but I heard that they are beneficial and a lot of fun. Most houses have requirements like you have to have a good GPA and all that. But if you are looking for lasting friendships, then going greek would be the best idea for you!
Great for these types of students This campus is good for students who don't really know what they want to major in because they will have lots of choices to pick from.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus In the student center down in the basement, is the Huskie den. You can bowl, play pool, or just hang out in there. I think students get good discounts on games and shoes too!
Bang for the buck If you apply early, you will get more scholarships from them and that plus your financial aid will mostly cover it, but you will still have a few hundred or so to pay every semester.
What to do for fun They have a ton of clubs and organizations to choose from. During the first week, they will be all over the place, giving you information and such and such. Being a student, you get access to all the games for free! Dekalb also has a lot of restaurants and shopping areas to choose from. If you just like to exercise, then go to NIU's rec or hit up the YMCA in Dekalb. Whatever strikes your fancy.
Food and Dining There is a lot to choose from and the lines run smoothly even when there are a lot of people. Everyone eats at different times and at different places. You can eat at any residence hall, but I hear that Stevenson is the place to go. Most of the dining halls are open from 7:00 A.M. to 11:00 P.M, so you can fit your meals in with your schedule with ease.
Dorm Life Everyone is friendly and the dorm advisors will answer all of your questions. If you want to know about the party scene, they will let you know. It all sounds scary, but as long as you plan and stay organized, you will find comfort in your new home.
Academic Rigor There are various types of classes to choose from. Most sound difficult, but if you stay on top of your homework and you try your best, then you will surely find yourself in a good position.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you keep in contact with the school and ask questions when you need answers! Do not be shy! If no one answers you, then keep trying. Don't doubt your chances on admission. NIU is very generous and they will take anyone that actually tries hard enough. If you think you applied late, then don't worry. You will still qualify for their scholarships and other opportunities. Keep your head in the game and you will surely find yourself on the right path to your future!
In three sentences NIU's campus is in a small-ish town, so you will feel right at home. The Undergraduate program offers a lot of majors and minors and this is helpful for those who are undecided. Once you are admitted, the cost of your tuition will not go up for the 4 years you are there!

Categories Comments Campus Safety NIU is now a lot more strict about safety on campus. There are police roaming campus all the time. If it is night time and someone is out, a police driver will help them out to make sure that the student is safe. Overall, this campus is a lot safer.
Greek Life Greek life isn't for everybody. But, for some it is life changing. There are plenty of ways to get involved with Greek life and I recommend trying it out.
Clubs and Activities There are so many different clubs and activities available for the students. Everyone is very welcoming here and if anybody has any type of club in mind, it is probably already created and available for you!
Great for these types of students It's great for people who enjoy being involved and determined.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Instead of clapping at football games, we shake our keys.
What to do for fun There are always sporting events going on to go to. Hundred's of different clubs are also available for everybody. The gym is open for people who love sports and getting in shape. If you are looking for a huge family then one can go Greek. There are countless things to do for fun. Just ask someone and they have it.
Food and Dining Some food and dining places are good and some are not. It depends on where you go.
Dorm Life They are modeling new dorms so the dorm life is improving everyday. They also now have programs for people to always have access to people who can help get you involved on campus.
Academic Rigor To get in the school NIU is slowly having higher requirements. To stay in this school you just need to maintain good grades and study hard.
Tips for prospective students Get involved on campus and take advantage of the opportunities that are available to you.
In three sentences Northern Illinois University is a very heart warming school. The teachers are there to help you and opportunities are always available. There are always things to do on campus which helps students stay focus and enjoy their time.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are campus police officers stationed throughout campus as well as police liaisons stationed within every residence hall. This widespread effect allows emergency personnel to respond quickly and efficiently. These police officers are all also medically trained and are, therefore, diversely trained to handle nearly any situation. These officers are easy to approach which creates a better security for the students on campus.
Greek Life Our university offers a great deal of variety when it comes to Greek life. Almost all of these Greek societies are tied to national chapters and organizations. This provides a great opportunity for anyone looking to become involved in social societies as well as service societies.
Clubs and Activities Several local clubs are jammed packed with students on any given night.
Great for these types of students NIU is great for business students and engineering students. Both of these departments have state of the art buildings, equipment, and faculty. NIU also has wonderful education and liberal arts opportunities for students.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is an observatory near the center of campus that is a famous place to take dates. Also, there are two official university seals in the ground; one in the library, the other in Altgeld Hall. Tradition states that if a student steps on either seal that they will not graduate on time. There are also two benches on campus known for their romantic implications. When you kiss your sweetheart on one bench, it is rumored that you will marry them. The other bench is known as the break-up bench; well just use your imagination. The problem is that no one can keep the two benches straight.
Bang for the buck Several local vendors give weekly deals to students enrolled at NIU.
What to do for fun NIU has many social options. The student center provides bowling, billiards, bags, video games, and rooms for parties. Campus Recreational Services also provide two large on-campus athletic facilities where students can play any number of sports or attend fitness classes. There are dramas performed on campus, as well as a variety of concerts and other theatrical shows. NIU students also have the luxury of attending any NIU athletic event on campus for free. This is just on campus. The possibility for fun off campus in the surrounding communities is endless.
Food and Dining There are several dining options across campus that offer a variety of dining styles and types of food. Whether you are hungry for international cuisine, contemporary dining, or homestyle dining there is always an option that fits a student's desires.
Dorm Life Through the use of the residential curriculum, Housing and Dining provides an at-home atmosphere in the residence halls (not dorms). You see, here at NIU, we take offense to the word dorm. A dorm is a room that provides a place to sleep. At NIU, residence halls are so much more than that. Sure, there are rooms, but not only for sleeping, but living. The residence halls provide academic services, counseling services, as well as a place for students to call home and feel secure in.
Academic Rigor I have had several challenging courses while in attendance at NIU. However, as long as you work hard as an individual, with your peers, and your teachers you will succeed academically.
Tips for prospective students Know what you want to receive from your college experience and absolutely do not be afraid to utilize the numerous resources the university makes available for its students.
In three sentences Northern Illinois University is a wonderful university where the highest administrators all the way up to the president want the university to be student-driven. Education, healthy life choices, creating an inclusive environment, contributing responsibly to the community, and managing relationships on a personal level are all pillars of Northern Illinois University. I transferred into NIU from a larger school and know that I made the best decision of my academic career.

Categories Comments Campus Safety It's a well known fact that there have been problems at Northern before. But these problems have made it safer! Between 11:00 PM and I think 6:00 AM, you need an entrance card and your school ID in order to get into your building. The only suggestion is to not walk anywhere alone at night, especially in the first few weeks.
Great for these types of students People who want to balance having fun with doing well in school, and people who don't mind walking!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus the Neptune halls do a special Halloween event every year!
What to do for fun There are thousands of places to eat with friends, a bunch of great scenery, and in one building there's a bowling alley! There's even pool tables and arcade games. So fun!
Food and Dining Great Dining halls, variety, and delicious food!
Dorm Life The Community advisers are so friendly and kind, you're sure to get along with them. There are thousands of opportunities to get involved, you can make your own rules for the dorm(as long as they aren't crazy) and overall, it's very friendly.
Tips for prospective students Go to some of the activities for new students. They can be very fun! But at the same time, don't feel like you have to go to all of them. It's fun to just make new friends, relax, and eat some pizza!
In three sentences There are so many good things I've discovered about this college. Socially, thee dorms have all sorts of opportunities, and the people I've met are mostly very nice. As far as extracurricular activities, there are thousands of opportunities including knitting clubs, Best Buddies, and even a Quidditch team!

Categories Comments Campus Safety We've had cases where students have died here, yes. However, that doesn't mean it's unsafe. You can go across the country or you can go to a school down the street, but your chances of being hurt are actually not that much different. Stay in groups at night, pay attention to your surroundings, and don't do anything stupid. Donâ??t worry about what has happened in the past, NIU is a pretty safe place to be.
Bang for the buck The school has all these things that they tell students are free, but we've already paid for them in tuition. So much money is put into our athletics when a good portion of the school doesn't even want to show up for the stuff. It's a LOT cheaper if you get your school supplies online (Amazon is great) because while you can get it quicker at school, you'll also spend over twice as much.
What to do for fun The huskie den has bowling, billiards, & video games. There are plenty of places in town to go to as well and you can often find an event being put on by the different groups on campus.
Dorm Life If you don't have to live in the dorms, DON'T. Some people really like them, but there are apartments near campus that are much cheaper and you'll have more freedom.
Tips for prospective students Talk to a counselor early on and don't be afraid to ask for a new one if yours isn't what you were looking for. You're in college so try different courses (even if you just sit in on a class with a friend) because you may find a different degree that will hold your interest much longer.
In three sentences The overall experience has been pretty positive. Most of my classes have great teachers who actually care about what they are teaching. I just wish the school would take a hard look at where our money is being spent because some of the faculty should not be in a classroom.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus Safety is a little questionable at my school. We've had a few bad things happen on campus, but that doesn't mean Northern Illinois is a bad school. Just recently Northern Illinois rebuilt the NIU police station adding more police on campus to keep things in order.
Greek Life The Greek life on campus is very strong. They are always hosting or planning different school events.
Clubs and Activities Northern Illinois University has a number of different clubs and organization. Just last year I participated in the organization call BMI which stands for Black Male Initiative. Its one of Northern Illinois University best organizations for black males and it has the highest graduation rate!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Not that I know of all the places on campus are pretty cool I cant complain.
Bang for the buck One thing I like about Northern Illinois University they try to make it easy for students to save money. During the first week of school they pass out coupons with different promotions going on in the Dekalb area. Northern Illinois also host a Target back to school bash at the local Target were Target offers everything in the store at a discounted price and they even pass out free school supplies
What to do for fun Well when all my homework was completed I would either hang out with friends I met. Most of the time we would go to the recreation center and play basketball and just work out in general. If I wasn't at the rec. with my friends I was going to the different school shows being held on campus.
Food and Dining The food is great. Northern Illinois has a wide verity of places on campus you can eat at. I love how they accommodate all different variety and types of food. Everyday I would find myself eating something different.
Dorm Life Dorm Life at Northern Illinois University is awesome! I simply love it. People are very friendly and willing to make new friends. The food was good, I was able to get my work done and seek out help for different classes all in the dorm where I used to live
Academic Rigor I would say the Academic Rigor for Northern Illinois University isn't a walk in the part. Its very challenging and I like it that way. This school well prepares you for the real world.
Tips for prospective students The only tips I would give to other students is don't get caught up with all the partying. Stay focused and don't forget what your in school for. Lastly, don't skip any classes you will fall behind and its hard climbing yourself out of that hole.
In three sentences If I would have to rate Northern Illinois University, I would rate it among the best Illinois State schools. Its has a outstanding business program, and its believed that majority of Northern Illinois bussiness students find a job quickly after graduation. All and all Northern Illinois is a, all out, great school!

Categories Comments Campus Safety Last week there were 2 shootings near campus. There is project 8 housing nearby so that has me concerned.
Greek Life Everyone loves Greek Life here.
Clubs and Activities There are tons of clubs but their meeting times are at night time. They definitely get points for having so many though.
Great for these types of students If you like Greek Life this college is for you, most of the people I've talked to love being in a fraternity or sorority.
Bang for the buck I don't feel it is worth the money I spend to go there.
What to do for fun There's bowling and pool tables in the student center, and usually people are going out and doing something fun during the week.
Food and Dining The new dorm is the best bet when it comes to finding food to eat, it is all you can eat and there is a good variety. The rest of the dorms have just the usual food you could find on any campus.
Dorm Life I can't say much on this because I am a commuter, but the dorms seem okay they aren't too cramped but some of the other students can be loud.
Academic Rigor I don't find the classes challenging, most of the time it is memorizing random information or writing a paper.
Tips for prospective students Try to make friends with the people in your dorms and in your classes, and keep a notebook with when your projects are due.
In three sentences I am honestly not a big fan of Northern Illinois, most likely because I commute. There is always problems finding a parking spot unless you come before 9 am.

Categories Comments Food and Dining The food is decent. But that depend on where you go to eat. The places I've eaten was of course the Neptune Dining Hall and Stevenson. If your looking for a good meal where you can get seconds, then I suggest the all you can eat buffets, whereas if you just craving that one specific item then head on over to Stevenson Towers or even check out the Trident located in Neptune.
Dorm Life Dorm life is an experience in itself. But it also depends on the dorm you chose. I live in Neptune West and I love it. It's has a dining hall and also a grab and go to your convince. But the thing I like the most about Neptune West is that it's in the middle of campus and it doesn't take a long time to commute to my classes.
Academic Rigor The academic lifestyle here at Northern is very rigorous. Though its up to you if you fail or not, help will be available in ever aspect that you need as far as Academics go. You are told what's expected of you the first day and is expected to uphold that.
In three sentences Northern is fun and exciting. They also have many opportunities to make you college experience a fun one but also a productive one. Northern will make you love your home away from home.

Categories Comments Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There's a gargoyle on campus that has no head. They dress it up for holidays (like putting a pumpkin on it for Halloween.) It's fun.
Food and Dining DeKalb has every restaurant you could want. The food is varied and good, with plenty of options on or near campus.
Academic Rigor The courses are challenging. If you skip class a lot, you will not do well. The good news is there are plenty of people willing to help you. As long as you work hard, you'll do fine.
In three sentences NIU is great! The professors and graduate assistants are very knowledgeable and willing to help students. The campus is beautiful, especially the lagoon by the art and music buildings!

Tips for prospective students Make sure you walk around campus before classes start. It will help you find the buildings your classes are in and it will also help you look for shortcuts to that building.
Bang for the buck Nothern is not a lot of money compared to many other colleges. It really is a beautiful and big campus that you will love just walking around on beautiful days. The dorms are a great place to live, and the food isn't as bad as you would think.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Join organizations that fit your intended field of study. Do some volunteer work. I was a tour guide for Northern and it was the best decision i had made and i plan to do it again. Finally, build some leadership skills.
Tips for prospective students Northern Illinois University is the best decision i have made. Those of you high schoolers who have applied and been accepted by Northern, this school is the best choice. There is a lot of organizations to join, fraternities and sororities to join, there is a variety of food to choose from, and you hardly have to spend money as most places at Northern accept Huskie Bucks which are provide by the school if you intend to get them when applying for your room. Get involved on campus.
Bang for the buck Though it may be expensive, it has been the best decision I have ever made in choosing a college. This school has allowed me to be me. I have met a lot of cool people here at Northern and have made a lot of friends to. The best dorm at Northern in my opinion is Stevenson Hall because they have the best food and the best rooms.
Am enjoying being here The people here at Northern Illinois University are friendly, the environment is excellent, and the instructors for every class are there to help students succeed. It is also easy to make friends with other students in your field of study as well as making friends with the instructors.
Am learning a lot The university has tutors, study groups, etc to help students learn more while at Northern. The instructors are experts in their field of study and are there to help.

Tips for prospective students Go to class all the time. Get to know the people around you. Witness your surroundings. Have confidence in all you do.
Bang for the buck It is all about the connections. You need them to get where you want to be. As a Theatre Major i know it all too well. You can have much talent in the world, but if you dont talk to the people with benefits, the process is slow and you wont get anywhere likely.
Am enjoying being here I love it here, the enviorment itself is amazing. The people you get to know, the area is peaceful and spacious. Sure there is a party here and there, but it doesn't get in the way unless you let it.

Categories Comments Am enjoying being here Northern Illinois Unversity is a great place to attend college. I enrolled to Northern in 2009, and I am currently an undergrad sophmore planning on getting my BD in mechanical engineering, then from there will go for master. Northern Illinois is a great college because they have a program called Chance Program. This program is for high school seniors that didn't graduate HS with a good GPA, or that did not do so well on the ACT. Northern started this program because they wanted to give students the chance to attend college, because most college just deny your application if you have a low ACT score or a low GPA. Once again NIU is a great college with good teaching/learning environment, and there are people working at NIU in order to guide you through your college life.

You don't want to have underage drinking infractions on your record when you are trying to get a job. Go there to enjoy moving forward with your life and get good grades. Most teachers are there to help if you need it so be sure to ask questions and make good use of your free time. And be sure to go to the football games! Such a great time in that stadium.
Bang for the buck I feel they, like all other universities these days charge more than we should have to pay. This is mostly due to lack of government funding, however NIU has a very nice bus transportation system around campus and the surrounding apartments and dorms. The grounds are always in good condition and the library is huge and has every book ever needed for a class. It also has escalators! If you push yourself to learn as much as you can and come out of there with a degree and even a job then the bank for the buck is really there.
Did enjoy being here Everything on and around campus is close in proximity to everything else. Friends are never too far and it's easy to walk or bike to classes or dorms. Overall it's a great place to be and be sure to check out the lagoon when the weather is nice.
Did learn a lot Most of the teachers for the major classes are great and have so much to offer students that really want to learn and ask questions. As a graduate with a Bachelors in Geography and GIS certificate I can say that the teachers and administrators in Davis hall including the meteorology staff are great. They are always wanting the best for students and offer as much life lessons as they can while teaching the curriculum.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students niu is a great school for any student to apply to.
Tips for prospective students some tips for students would be to: eat healthy while away at school (to avoid gaining the extra freshmen 15 lbs). check out the recreational center (it's amazing!), budget your huskie bucks and your meal plan wisely. study hard and study with friends and others in your classes when you can, classes can be difficult (make it easier for yourself as much as possible by talking to professors and tutors as well.)
Am enjoying being here I really enjoyed being away from home. I enjoyed it so much that now I wish i had stayed at the school instead of having to come home.
Academic Rigor i learned alot when i was at niu. i learned new study techniques that really helped me out.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck Even though the tuition is pretty standard, I am really hoping that what I get from my time here will make it seem like a minuscule amount.
Will enjoy being here This will be my first time living away from home, but I think that it is going to be really good for me. I really think that this is a great chance for me to practice being an adult.
Will learn a lot I'm thrilled about my major program, especially how enthusiastic all the professors I have met are about their subjects. I am an anthropology major, and I was drawn to NIU by the credentials and publishing history of the Anthropology staff; I can't wait to learn from them!

Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you are a student in Illinois who doesn't want to go far from home, then this college is a great choice for you. If you want to study abroad, this college isn't a bad choice either. Overall, it's a decent university with classrooms taught by qualified professors for a decent price.
Tips for prospective students As with any college, you have to study hard in order to get what you want. For the price of tuition, you will learn a lot here, and broaden your horizons. Since this is a public university, you will meet all kinds of people from different backgrounds. Make sure to meet with a counselor often in order to check your progress.
Bang for the buck Northern Illinois University has some pretty good programs considering its low tuition costs. The dorms aren't great, but they provide you with food and are relatively low on cost.
Am enjoying being here Northern Illinois University is a rather fun campus. There are swimming pools, lots of good places to eat, and a campus cinema. There is also a recreation center where you can exercise. The dorms aren't all that bad for the price, and there are also plenty of apartments in the area as well. Also, for the most part, the students are very nice people and don't mind getting to meet new people.
Am learning a lot The professors here at NIU are actual participants in their fields for the most part. There is a lot to be learned from them, and most professors are very flexible with meeting times and appointments. There are many different majors to choose from, though I wish there were more bachelor programs for foreign languages other than Spanish, German, and Russian.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Anyone and everyone would fit in at NIU. I came from California and a girl on my dorm floor came from Florida and we fit in just fine. There is so much diversity at NIU that anyone fits in and anyone feels welcome and can be successful while studying at Northern.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you get involved your first semester. By weaving yourself into the NIU community you meet so many new people and make so many new friends right off the bat. I joined a sorority my first semester at NIU and have made so many friends and don't regret a second of it. Just make sure you get involved, that is the best thing you can do.
Bang for the buck Especially being out of state the tuition is expensive but it is for sure worth it! I love Illinois and have had so much fun and the classes and professors are brilliant. It is for sure worth it!
Am enjoying being here I love being here! Coming out to NIU from California, although homesickness has gotten the best of me sometimes, was the best decision I could have made. Being out on my own I have branched out making so many new friends and experiencing a completely different culture out in the midwest then typical California.
Academic Rigor I have learned so much by going to NIU not only about school work and my major I am pursuing but I have learned so much about myself as well. Everyone is so welcoming and helpful that you always have a comfortable environment.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Not great for these students: Math majors...unless you are really, really talented.
Tips for prospective students Apply for all the scholarships you can!! Even if you think you won't get it, any chance is better than none.
Bang for the buck As with any other college, it is overpriced. If you plan on saving money money, either get a ton of scholarships or go to a community college first.
Am enjoying being here There is so much to do. There is definitely never a dull moment and I am never bored.
Am learning a lot I am amazed at how much I have learned here. As a science major, I understand the importance of knowledge and I guarantee you will learn something new every day.

Am enjoying being here I love DeKalb. It is a very quiet school to be in and very diverse. The students are very friendly and it is very easy to make friends.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are many officers on campus at all times. Their number one priority is to make us feel at home, feel safe, and feel comfortable. They are not out to ruin your day, they want to ensure you have a good one. Regardless of past events, the safety is still huge and dominant on the campus and around DeKalb.
Greek Life Many people join greek life at NIU. Its a fun, great experience for people to make life long lasting relationships with people from all over. A once in a life time chance.
Clubs and Activities Anything and everything from religious groups, to student lead organizations, greek life, intramural sports, workout classes, and service clubs!
Great for these types of students Anyone who wants to have a fun environment to prosper academically and practically! Everyone will find people who have similar interests to them, and who are looking out for their well being!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The grotesque statue in the courtyard is a location on campus sacred to the university. The observation deck is very neat to go up to visit (for free!) and the imfamous kissing bench! (:
Bang for the buck Like any other college education, it has some costs, however they are reasonable and the college offers lots of scholarships.
What to do for fun Lots of festivals in the fall, school organized events every other week at least, and plenty of recreational activities are planned each week. Indoor and outdoor sports available with equipment available.
Food and Dining Lots of options to choose from, food plans offer plenty of money for the smallest to the largest diets!
Dorm Life Great facilities with lots of friendly people. Close helpful amenities. The rules are not very strict, but do help keep order in the halls. The new halls are FANTASTIC!
Academic Rigor The school offers a variety of many highly accredited programs such as nursing, sciences, engineering, music, art, teaching, and physical therapy.
Tips for prospective students Find a balance between social and academic life! Both are crucial to building a successful college and professional life.
In three sentences Northern is definitely a commuter school, but it is still full of great opportunities! Every professor is goal-oriented, the campus is very homey, and the people are diverse and friendly! School spirit here is unbelievable, everyone who goes to NIU loves it!

Categories Comments Campus Safety campus safety is a number one priority here at niu. although there have been some saftey cautions, none of them have happened on campus. niu is no different then any college campus. if you are taking the right safety precautions then there is no need to worry.
Greek Life the greek life is good out here. the greeks are friendly and it's fairly easy to engage in their activities.
Clubs and Activities there are always clubs and activities to join on campus. if there is one thing niu is excellent at it's making sure their students have every opportunity to get involved with the campus.
Great for these types of students niu is great for anyone coming from a small school and really looking for a place to just blend in and not be known. it's also good for students who come from big schools and enjoy the hustle and bustle of a big campus.
Bang for the buck with niu you definitely get what you pay for. the only thing free around here are all the t-shirts that seem to come your way. if willing to pay for a college tuition you get what you paid for.
What to do for fun there is tons to do around campus for fun. the key is to find the fun activities. most of the time there are parties on weekends.
Food and Dining the food around campus and in the dorms is decent. the variety of foods changes with each dorm. there is always a healthy alternative.
Dorm Life the dorm life is alright. the atmosphere of a bunch of young adult college students all in one place is a bit obnoxious but, that can be said about any college dorm. it's a good experience to have in the first year.
Academic Rigor the academic rigor depends on the class loads you decide to take and the major you intend to go into. the class work can be alot if you take difficult classes and professors. although it's nothing that can't be managed by keeping up with it.
Tips for prospective students try to get involved as much as possible. the more people you know the better experience you will have; socially and academically.
In three sentences northern illinois university is a big school and has lots to do. it takes some time to get adjusted but, if one is willing to stick it out it's a great experience. i would recommend it to anyone.

Categories Comments What to do for fun there are so many sports offered at niu, but if you don't want to play profeesionally and just want to do it for fun, niu has many intramural sports.
Food and Dining the food is amazing. they have almost every category of food you can think of (except sushi), to have a feast with.
Dorm Life the dorms are pretty awesome
Tips for prospective students try to focus on what you are coming to school for. niu is not a party school or rather not one anymore, so maintain your studies and focus on your grades.
In three sentences niu has a very great learning environment. the class sizes are very small and the professors are there to assist you whenever you need them.

Categories Comments Campus Safety there is 24/7 police surveillance and protection. there is a police officer in each residence hall and there is a police station here on campus.
Greek Life there are 30+ greek fraternities and sororities on campus. study for the week and attend the frat parties on the weekend.
Clubs and Activities as i mentioned before there are over 500+ activities, clubs, organizations and intramural sports teams.
What to do for fun there are over 500+ activities, clubs, student organizations and intramural sports. get involved!
Food and Dining the food is excellent! lincoln hall and stevenson hall are the best places to get something to eat.
Dorm Life i like the dorms, though, i am new to the whole community bathroom style, which is where you share a bathroom with people of your same sex (ie. all males share a bathroom, all girls share a bathroom). people on the floor are fairly friendly and the community advisers (ca) are very active.
Academic Rigor the academia here at niu is very challenging, however, the instructors are willing to make sure each student is able to learn the material. this is college and they will not baby anyone. if you have a question please do not be shy because professors are more than willing to help answer your question.
Tips for prospective students for illinois residents, make sure that you check an institution has your major and check the accreditation. niu has a plethora of majors to choose from with high accreditation. i transferred to niu from another school and learned that out-of-state tuition is highly unnecessary, especially when you can get the same education or even better education by staying in-state like at institutions like northern illinois university.
In three sentences northern illinois university is one the best schools in the state of illinois. it has a very rigorous education, fantastic student services support with the various offices eager and equipped to help students, and a large variety of social organizations to be apart to feel truly one with niu. i recommend this school to all students because this has been a school of enlightenment.

Great for these types of students niu is a very diverse school that is appropriate for recommendation to anybody trying to get into college.
What to do for fun there are always social events open on weekends for students looking to develop a social life, which can easily be achieved at this school, because people are very friendly and it is easy to meet people with similar interests at clubs and organizations and even classes. the rec center will be a favorite for people trying to work out or get active in sports.
Tips for prospective students northern illinois university offers many great resources and clubs and organizations anyone can join. most of these are free and are a great way to spend free time, meet people, and gain beneficial skills that can be applied in one's future.

What to do for fun lambda sigma sophomore honors society!! the football, the theatre, the student union activities, plus, the campus is really beautiful!

Dorm Life the best in the state if you get along with your roommate! :)
Academic Rigor the classes get harder the more you advance, don't take tough classes like a & p over the summer unless you are very good at memorizing!
Tips for prospective students apply to nursing school early and with the highest gpa possible.

Categories Comments Campus Safety the campus safety has gone up in recent years after all the problems that they have been having. they now set up these poles all across campus where if you press a button on them then a cop will show up to that location as fast as possible. also, they have check-ins with cops at the dorms. people have to check-in anytime after 11.
Greek Life the greek life on campus is really big here. there are a lot of fraternity's and sority's to choose from. they do a lot of activities and help around the community a lot. they also have tugs and their own intramural leagues.
Clubs and Activities there are a few bars on campus that the students really enjoy. starbusters and molly's are the 2 main ones on campus.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus one unusual tradition/location on campus are these two benches. one bench is said to be the bench where people ask their girlfriend out on and then the other one is the breakup bench.
Bang for the buck overall, i have been having a lot of fun at northern illinois. it is not that expensive of a school so im happy about that. i also joine a fraternity so that might help the reason out a little.
What to do for fun northern illinois has a great greek life and they hold a lot of events which are really fun. also, the football games are a lot of fun. there is also a good intramural program which has almost any sport. there is a campus movie theatre and also a pool hall/bowling alley on the campus which is pretty cheap.
Food and Dining they have a dining hall at every dorming facility so they have very easy access. also, a lot of fast food places around campus accept huskie bucks which is very helpful.
Dorm Life northern illinois just renovated a dorm building this year and it is really nice and big. for the upcoming year, they just built a whole brand new dorming facility which will fit over 1,000 new students and from the looks of it they will be some of the nicest dorms i will ever see on any campus. also for next year, they are renovating 4 more buildings.
Academic Rigor there are some classes and majors that require some hard work and studying. overall though, it is not so bad if you just do your work and make sure you put in some time to study.
Tips for prospective students my main tip is to stay on top of your work and make a connection with your academic advisors as soon as possible. it will ensure that you do very well in school.
In three sentences northern illinois is a very good school and it is very helpful. all the teachers and academic are very helpful and set you on the right track. the school also has some very good programs, for example, they have a really good business and nursing program.

Categories Comments Campus Safety do not let this schools bad rep fool you. bad stuff happens in every town and everywhere. i love niu campus police and have only felt unsafe maybe once or twice during my 4 years.
Clubs and Activities they have many clubs and you can always start one if you want.
Great for these types of students students who like a smaller school but still want the division one experience and are interested in chicago networking.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus the geese become a part of your day because they are everywhere during some parts of the year.
Bang for the buck i have done internships thanks to niu and i really think it is a great value school. it is a little run down visually but i think for the most part the education is just as solid as most schools.
What to do for fun going to sporting events and getting involved with campus activities.
Food and Dining i always enjoyed the food in the residential halls but as for variety in dekalb you kinda have to work hard to try new things.
Dorm Life they are currently building a new residential hall and they renovated some of grant towers. the only bad part is some of the halls do not have wi-fi or air conditioning.
Academic Rigor the amount of rigor depends on your ability to study and how well you understand your classes. always do your research before deciding what classes and what professors to have.
Tips for prospective students use the four year plan sheets available to you by the academic advisers and make sure you go on a tour of the school and to an open house. these intro to niu events are super helpful when you are deciding whether or not to go to school here.

What to do for fun there are plenty of bars and concert halls in the downtown area.

Academic Rigor northern has some very difficult classes, but it is all in the student's best interest.
Tips for prospective students i highly recommend not commuting, as the professors expect a lot out of their students. with the amount of homework, reading, and papers, you will need every spare second of your free time to get things done.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Every night, campus police check on the floors of the dorms at 3 different times, and they also are in charge of access control, which means that only residents of the building and their guest may enter from the hours of 11pm-7am. Another precaution the school has implemented is Emergency button posts all around campus, which has a button that, when pressed, summons police to that area within 3 minutes. Overall, the campus feels very safe and secure.
What to do for fun There are so many activities available at NIU that it is impossible to be a part of them all. The Recreation Center is available for students, and offers intramural sports. On that same note, NIU has a ton of sports teams to support, including the amazing football team and women's volleyball team. The clubs and organizations at Northern are not hard to find, as many of the groups put up flyers or advertise by setting up an information booth in the Holmes Student Center or various academic buildings.
Food and Dining NIU really doesn't offer anything extra special when it comes to on-campus dining. The residence halls have theme nights, some of the more recent ones have been A Night at the Oscars, with red carpet decorations and fancy-sounding food, as well as Take Me Out to the Ballgame, featuring foods typically found at the ballpark, like hot dogs and pizza. As far as off-campus dining, the options are pretty decent. There's a Chipotle, Potbelly, and Starbucks within walking distance from the dorms. There's also lots of places that deliver in the area.
Dorm Life At NIU, the dorms definitely need some work. I currently live in Douglas Hall, which is one of the smaller residence halls. I enjoy the community of the dorm. Because it is one of the smaller dorms, the people living here are more connected than in the larger ones. However, Northern is in the process of upgrading their dorms. The C wing of Grant Hall was remodeled and made more modern, and the school has a brand new residence hall scheduled to be open for Fall 2012 which is said to be a state-of-the-art facility. With some remodeling and new dorms, NIU can improve on the overall dorm life of its students.
Academic Rigor Because I am a freshman student, I am taking general education courses which are, for the most part, easier than higher level classes. But so far I have found the classes to be somewhat of a challenge. NIU has professors
Tips for prospective students If I had one tip for prospective students who plan to attend Northern Illinois, I would tell them to get involved. As a freshman, I felt that I made the wrong decision to leave home instead of attending community college, but once I ventured out of my room and to a few different activities and groups, I found that I was actually really excited about the new opportunities I was given. So for students who may come here, or to any school, they should try to get involved right away and find their place in the large campus.
In three sentences I would rate Northern Illinois University a nine out of ten because it is an incredible school with a diverse community of students and faculty that are welcoming, helpful, and friendly. In addition, the amount of courses and extracurricular activities is boundless. After attending NIU for almost an entire year, I am pleased with my decision to attend this university.

Food and Dining The food here is pretty good, the rumor of the freshman 15 can be true if all you do is pig out. There is a gym that NIU students get to use for free, so take advantage.
Dorm Life Some dorm rooms are nicer than others, but if your like me you will have friends in the other dorm and you could have sleepovers. Also, as a college student you shouldn't stay in your room all day.
Academic Rigor Just Awesome !

Categories Comments Campus Safety I have had nothing bad happen to me, and none of my friends as well. this school does have a bad reputation, but i have heard nothing bad happen so far. It is recommended to not walk around alone at night though. They also have towers to call for 911 all over campus, which is a plus.
Greek Life It depends on where you go and who you join. Ive only heard good things from the members of frats and sororities, but its up to the individual what their mind set is. It is also a huge commitment, since you will constantly be doing things so make sure you can handle the Greek life with school life.
Clubs and Activities Tons to do, i cant even begin to list it all. you just gotta get out there and be willing to look for things you're interested in.
Great for these types of students Any type of student would be good here, especially one on a budget.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is a headless gargoyle here on campus with a long story, but most of the upperclassmen dress her up according to seasons, and certain events.
Bang for the buck There are so man things that are provided to you through the school when you pay to go here. Hospital visits, many types of services that help immensely, a rec center, and much more.
What to do for fun Basically hang out with friends, attend events, join a sport or group, ect. its endless what you can do here and its all up to you what you do or don't do.
Food and Dining I have Celiac's Disease, so i find the dining to be awful. I can hardly eat a regular meal without being in fear i may eat the wrong thing. they have very minor vegan and vegetarian options, so i rate it low.
Dorm Life Depending on where you live, you'll do just fine. My first semester, i had awful problems with my roommates, as i lived in a suite and had three. I moved my second semester, now, and i absolutely love where i live. It just depends on the people you live with and the people on your floor.
Academic Rigor So far as a freshman, my classes have definitely been a challenge but nothing more than i could handle. As long as you study and do everything you can in your classes, they aren't horrible. I have heard that the classes do get harder as you go up, of course, but this is hearsay.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you get to know as many people as you can, go to EVERY class or only miss very few days, and gain closer professional relationships with your professors.
In three sentences Northern is a great school to be at, but it isn't an ivy league school by any means. I do like the course options and how many options there are here as a student. It really is encouraging to know students can go to a cheaper school and still get a great education.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Being NIU campus safety is one of the most pushed for things. NIU Campus Police is quick, and ready to respond. Most officers are really easy to talk to, and all of them are professional.
Greek Life Greeks are BIG here. Parties happen, but personally I haven't gone to one. I hear they are great, but since they arn't my cup of tea, I tend to avoid them.
Clubs and Activities Most people leave at least once a month to go back home, but as mentioned, there are places to hang out on campus and meet new people in a social environment.
Great for these types of students It really can be great for anyone, you just have to step up and take advantage of the resources.
Bang for the buck Its not as expensive as other schools, and if you get involved on campus, every penny is worth it.
What to do for fun The bars around here, as well as the frats get people in every weekend. We also have the House Cafe that has stuff going on all week.
Food and Dining Currently they are under new management, so big changes are being made for the better. The food quality is going up, and they are pushing for better dinning experiences. If it keeps going at this rate, there wont be anything i can criticize them for.
Dorm Life Most dorms are not bran new, but each one has its perks. It really depends on your floor how much of a community you become, but the Community Advisers (better known as Residential Advisers) do their best to create strong bonds.
Academic Rigor A lot of emphasis is placed on sports, so if you are an athlete, you lucked out. If the school focused more on academics over athletics, it would be much better off.
Tips for prospective students Get involved on campus with programs like Research Rookies, and the Foreign Language Residence Program. They are not only good academically, but help you meet people.

Food and Dining The dining hall food isn't the best, but once you're out of the halls, you definitely come to miss it. Other than that, the surrounding area food is typical affair of a college town.
Dorm Life The dorms was one of the best times there, its really where you get to meet all new people and forge the friendships that last throughout the rest of college
Academic Rigor Make sure you go to class. As I was told once, college is a game you just have to know how to play it.
Tips for prospective students Don't be afraid to get out and meet people. Step out of your comfort zone and try new things, it will make your experience that much better.

Bang for the buck The tuition is cheap, and you get what you pay for here at NIU.
What to do for fun It depends on what you view as fun. The bars are okay, but the drinks are weak and the people are often belligerent. The Greek life here at NIU is amazing, and will provide you with many opportunities.
Food and Dining Not fabulous at all. Not very many vegetarian/vegan options.
Dorm Life The dorms are in huge need of renovation and the food is horrible. There is a small sense of community in most dorms, regardless of the staff's attempts at creating a friendly environment.
Academic Rigor There is not much challenge when it comes to the courses at NIU. There is barely any application of knowledge. Tests are made up of regurgitating information that you have memorized, not integrated into your memory.
Tips for prospective students I would only attend NIU if you are looking into a business program. The science here is sub par, as well as the English department.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is getting better, but it took a lot for it to be stressed on our campus. There are police officers at every dorm after 11:00pm, there are police officers always walking around at night, and we have a late night ride service to pick us up and drop us off at all hours beginning at 10:00pm to 7:00am.
Greek Life The Greek life on campus is quite good. The only thing is that the Greeks are not united as one. They are always getting into arguments and fights against one another instead of for one another. They are all so worried about what each other are doing than what they are doing, it causes a lot of problems. Its quite shameful, to be honest.
Clubs and Activities There are few to no activities or clubs for students on campus. There is no where to go and hang out and have fun.
Great for these types of students I am unsure of what is being asked.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is nothing unusual on campus. It is very important that there is a place on campus for everyone at some point in time to feel comfortable.
Bang for the buck I am unsure of what is being asked.
What to do for fun I typically just relax for fun. When I do have spare time, my favorite past time activity is to sleep.
Food and Dining The food is terrible. They always have the same thing and it is very unhealthy. The food that is the most appetizing is all of the fried foods or things smothered in sauce and cheese. They do not provide a wide variety of foods.
Dorm Life The dorm life is awesome! I mean it has its challenges, but you can learn a lot about things from living in them.
Academic Rigor A lot of the classes teach the same things. It is almost like everything is repeated. Again, the fact that the professors barely speak English does not help.
Tips for prospective students Go to multiple advisers, if possible, as well as other students and professors for help with your classes. Be sure to read and prepare for class ahead of time. Make sure you are patient and are prepared to be pushed from person to person for help.
In three sentences The hospitality program is not that good. The professors in this field are either burned out or cannot speak English very well. It would be nice if our advisers knew what they were talking about and could actually help us get through all of our courses.

What to do for fun Party. Shop. Party. Eat out. Party. Late night Walmart visits. Party.
Food and Dining The food is alright. Every once in a while the dining halls will switch it up, but its the same thing everyday. Stevenson is the best but it gets old.
Dorm Life Living at NIU's residence halls can be annoying. The food starts to get old but thats any college. Its a way to network and find out whats going on in different social groups.
Academic Rigor This is how college really is when they explain it. Some teachers care less if you show up to class, but I was lucky enough to have teachers that care. The work isnt hard your first year the most I had to write was 8 pages.
Tips for prospective students Keep your heads in your books, and when youre done with that do not go to sleep. Go and explore the university and join some orgs. Get the whole college experience.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Police station on campus, less than 5min away. Safety alarms all over campus. Police are often out and about walking around or just chillin. Some are actually pretty cool.
Greek Life There are so many greeks & frats. Some diverse, accepting anyone..some only accept a certain type.
Clubs and Activities Like starts at 400, I think it's a club for all types of people. There are also frats & sororties. & also African American frats.
Great for these types of students Great for students who like a big campus setting, diversity, being social, ready to put in work to stay there.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There's this forbidden park in the area, located near the forest. It's highly suggested you don't go there. One tradition is wearing red & black on fridays. & Neptune is the closest dorm to classes.
Bang for the buck Choose classes wisely and if you aren't rich or well off, spend your money wisely. More often than not you might end up in the negative. There's a charge for every little thing, small things. Money is always an issue. Budget wisely. Overall good school though.
What to do for fun For fun some people party, go to the rec, work out, play basketball, join orgs, join sport orgs and teams, go to games, there's always events going on, mingle with people in the Student Center, Neptune Central & Stevenson court(dorms). & attend probates.
Food and Dining Food & Dining varies among each dorm. Good changes are being made to make Neptune better. Stevenson is the biggest aside from the new exclusive dorm. The food is like fast food/restaurant food. Some days better than others. Breakfast/Brunch is usually pretty good.
Dorm Life Dorms definitely takes a nice chunk out of your financial aid. I reccommend it for the first year just for the experience. You meet more, people because of the populated setting. Sometimes people's idiotic choices also fall on you penalty wise. Dining halls are a close advantage also.
Academic Rigor The challenge of classes depends on the individual. Some more challenging than others. Best advice is to study and ask for help. All teachers have office hours for you to visit and get help or teacher aids to help.
Tips for prospective students Stay focused on why you came, which is to achieve success. The more effort you put in, and the greater your drive to succeed is, the better results you will get. Last tip: Party hard, study HARDER.
In three sentences NIU is a school that offers many opportunities for everyone, from speciality classes to an immense list of different organizations. It is a diverse community with some kind of event always going on. From my experience, the teachers have true passion for their work and in teaching you and in you actually learning.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Go to the gym, get free food from events, attend games, party, and much more.
Food and Dining There are options, but can seem like little after being at niu for a long time. There are restaurants if you don't like cafeteria food (cafeteria food here is not like public high school cafeteria food.)
Dorm Life It is very fun. There is a lot of socializing going on. It might be when one realizes what freedom tastes like. The dorms don't look that bad.
Academic Rigor I only visited and did not sit through a class, but I heard freshmen classes were fairly easy. However, I heard this from people that know how to get their work done but still party hard.
In three sentences NIU is a pretty lively school that has many events for its students. It has the college town feel and the city isn't too far away. Also, accommodating yourself here can be easy if you let it be.

Categories Comments Food and Dining There are many places you can choose from in DeKalb and they have a system about huskie bucks and they are good at some of the stores and restaurants in the local places.
Dorm Life The rooms are really nice and I am looking forward to being a huskie with my fellow roommates. I also like the fact that they are refurbashing some of the dorm buildings.
Academic Rigor NIU pretty much has everything you need to be able to have a successful career in life.
Tips for prospective students I think that all prospect students should take a campus tour and be able to walk around campus and be able to see, hear, and experience things with there own eyes.
In three sentences I would rate Northern Illinois University a nine. This campus is clean inside and out and I absolutely love the history of the school. Also it seems the employees really care about the students and are eager to have new faces on their campus and most important this college is very affordable and in a great area.

Categories Comments Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Undie-Run is probably one of the most interesting traditions that takes place on the NIU campus. On this fall-night, a lot of the students meet at a park on campus wearing clothes that they want to donate. At a certain time, everyone takes these clothes off leaving them in their undergarments. After undressing, everyone runs a mile around greek row. The point of the event is to donate clothes to charity, and have a little fun in the process. You do not HAVE to run in your underwear in order to participate, but some people like to.
Bang for the buck Over all, NIU is a nice campus. It has a lot of residential area around it, therefor it is very homely. It is not hard to feel at-home at NIU. DeKalb is a pretty small town, which generally means that the people are very friendly. It is easy to make friends. NIU is whatever you make it to be, just don't forget why you are there in the first place!
What to do for fun NIU has a lot of activities prepared by the campus themselves. You can learn about what is going on for the week through the website or even via facebook. NIU has a campus movie theater with movies that are cheaper than most theaters. Know that these movies are probably out of regular theaters, but it still is cheaper. If you are 21 or older, NIU campus has some nice bars around to go to. Fatty's is a place you can go with your friends, eat some food, and have some social drinks. There are televisions to watch the games, and fun themes to dress up for. Molly's is another fun bar, but is more of a night-club scene. Both bars are very popular in the town of DeKalb. One of the best parts of the NIU campus is that the general outside-area is beautiful. There is a lagoon on campus with some nice trees to read/do homework under. Night-strolls beside the lake can also be beautiful.
Food and Dining The food is very good at NIU. If you are one that will be eating in the dormitory cafeterias, you are in for a treat. There are a lot of prepared cuisines for you to pick from, or you can just pick up a side-dish. If you don't want to eat at the cafeteria, there are plenty of places in walking-distance to grab a bite before/between classes!
Dorm Life The dorms can be fun. Usually, everyone on the floors become pretty close friends. In a lot of cases, they become life-long friends. It is important to make sure that you are still able to have your alone-time for your school-work, or even form a study group. If you are one that likes to shower before class, try to get up extra early, especially girls. The showers can be pretty busy in the mornings. Also, make sure you have shower shoes/flip flops to wear while showering. Although the bathrooms are well kept, it is just safer this way.
Academic Rigor Class should always come first. It may seem like a fun idea to go out and see what is going on in the DeKalb night-life. You will regret it the next morning and could get into a regular habit of skipping class Just this once. Stay committed to your homework. Homework is the main key. If you do your homework up to your instructor's standards, you will need to do little-to-no studying the night before tests. You will know everything you need to know just by doing the homework. Do not let homework pile-up either. Assign a time every day that you will dedicate to your homework. This will make your work seem a lot less difficult, and it will be better quality due to less stress of getting it done on time. If there is a class/time/instructor that is filled for the semester, COMMUNICATE COMMUNICATE COMMUNICATE! Put time aside to go into the professor's office during their office hours, or even e-mail. The fact that you took the time to go in and express desire to be in the class will stand out to them. In most cases, a lot of students drop throughout the semester, and the teachers know this. If you show that you care, you could probably get a seat in the class.
Tips for prospective students 1. Definitely bring a bike, there are not a lot of places to park(for free) throughout campus. 2. Walk/Bike/Bus to class. What parking is available, is usually taken. You will waste more time trying to find parking and probably be late for your classes. 3. Invest in Huskie Bucks! They are accepted at almost all restaurants, and it's a great way to make sure you're saving your money to feed yourself. 4. Invest in pepper spray. Not just for NIU, but for ANY campus. Although it is unlikely on this campus to need it, you can never be too careful. 5. If you have time for it, apply for a work-study! Depending on the job you get, you could be able to make money and do your homework at the same time! It is time well spent!
In three sentences Northern Illinois University is definitely an education-based campus. Here, you are not seen and classified based on what fraternity or sorority you are part of, but what you have to offer to contribute to the campus and town. It is a friendly campus/town, and easy to feel at home.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Each and every week while class is in session, safety is definitely the topic of discussion. Although NIU has had some major outbreaks, it needs to be said that there are many causes and special events and notifications to students and parents to spread awareness and new ideas to increase safety.
Greek Life Greek life is definitely cherished here at NIU.
Clubs and Activities The list of clubs and activities is endless, I would recommend going to www.niu.edu to check out all of them!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are two memorials and days of honor for two tragedies that happened years ago. It is very formal and hundreds of students and other affiliated citizens come to mourn and remember the events. Special salutes and memorial activities are performed. Also, there are huskie statues placed all around campus, it is fun to try to find all of them, there are at least over 40!
Bang for the buck NIU has a lot of specials online and available in the newspapers, magazines, or on posters. There is always a way to save on food, groceries, movies, activities, etcetera.
What to do for fun Dekalb/Sycamore have a lot to do for fun and entertainment. There is a large swimming pool with two slides and a separate diving pool. There are performing arts opportunities in downtown Dekalb with two movie theaters (one in Sycamore). On-campus activities are very frequent and most often pertain to organizations and special causes. Dekalb and Sycamore have a wide variety of restaurants available, from sushi and thai to Mcdonald's and White Castle. The bike paths are always a nice, athletic choice for those with bikes and the desire to run. There are many more activities available!
Food and Dining There are various food and dining options. Huskie bucks and a meal plan are available to supply a pre-paid amount of money for the week for every dorm cafeteria and any restaurants or stores in alliance with NIU (Huskie Bucks). The food is definitely better than what would be considered the average cafeteria food. There is always a wide variety of choices. From healthy to greasy and fried!
Dorm Life I lived in one of the dorms my freshman year. You only have to live in a dorm the first year at NIU. I stayed in Neptune West. The dorms supply a microwave and mini-fridge, with a nice spacious desk with drawers and shelves, a twin bed that is easily made comfortable with a foam layer and nice sheets, and a nice sized closet that fits larger closet organizers with a top storage for suitcases and other items you do not need out. This was a room for 2 people and each person had all of these amenities. The room is somewhat small, but I, personally, was never really there except to sleep and eat. Dorm floor meetings are held, such as ice cream socials, movie nights, etcetera.
Academic Rigor As expected, the higher the number of the class means the higher the expected work and effort is needed to be put into it. As a freshman, the classes were seemingly easy, in my opinion, however everyone is different. It also depends on what classes you take. Some courses are much more essay based, while others are much more hands-on and short assignment based. Online activities are also to be taken into consideration. Overall, I found that if you put in the most effort no matter what, the course load will be the same, unless the course if directed specifically toward your major, then the course load will most likely always be heavier.
Tips for prospective students 1.) Never put yourself in a situation that doesn't feel safe. 2.) Never walk alone at night. 3.) If you are of age to drink, be aware of what is in your beverage and if it was already open and where it is at all times. 4.) Pick your classes way in advance, as soon as you can, so you will definitely make it into the ones you need. *This means seeing your academic advisor ahead of time as well. 5.) Bring quiet snacks and water to long classes to keep your energy level at a high and your attention span longer. This will help with your learning abilities- healthy snacks/beverages are recommended.
In three sentences Northern Illinois University is a campus that enables hands-on fun and learning to be within the same environment. Easy access to the entire campus, and some off-campus areas (including grocery stores and shopping centers), are provided by the bus system that has various routes. Overall, NIU is home to moving forward, together, forward, when in a crisis we stick together and raise awareness to become better class-men.

Food and Dining Between the multiple cafeterias on campus nobody goes hungry. If you like meat or need a frappe to get you going in the morning, Northern Illinois offers it all. There are also numerous restaurants through out the are for even those special occasions.

I am a Greek which is the best decisions I have ever made besides coming to college. What ever fun you think your having Greeks are having that much amount of Fun x100 what ever you do on a weekend that what Greeks do on a weekday, Got to NIU and Go Greek

Great for these types of students People who want to go Greek. Nerdy gamer types Business Majors Engineering Majors Psychology Majors
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We have a legit academic Castle on Campus, And we have an Event/ Tradition Called Tugs Extreme Tug of war. And tailgate Season
Bang for the buck For instate yes its a cheap university with a Big University atmosphere, defiantly worth the price of 12,000. Out of state kids might want to rethink other potential schools
What to do for fun Defiantly look into intramural sports if you love physical activity. The party/Social scene is pretty good, Not to mention the concerts that roll through town like Dayglow, Mac Miller, Wiz Khalifam and etc. There always plenty to do at Northern
Food and Dining Northern has plenty of great eateries for anyone with vast taste from Chinese to thai. For the residents the dorms dinning hall are among the best. Stevenson offer a variety of foods from Cheeseburgers to buffalo chicken wraps. Not to mention the mornings where they serve Skillets, Waffles. and French toast, Other places Like Dog pound Deli Puts Subway and Jimmy Johns to shame that will keep you coming back, also places like the new residence hall and Neptune are all you can eat buffets.
Dorm Life Dorm life is pretty fun for first years alot of time spent socializing on the floor with other residents. Northern tries to get rid of the image of Dorms by calling them residence halls. That simple little touch does make Northern feel more like home.
Academic Rigor Northern Is a great school and the Professors are very week educated in there field of study. Also there is tutoring available. If your a business major Northern is probably one of the best schools for business.
Tips for prospective students Join Greek Life, get involved in programs. Don't go home every weekend, and talk to everyone you meet and exchange numbers with them. Think of Northern as a big little school, a lot if people know each other but there are still so many people to know. Also stay on top of studies and don't get caught up in party scene too much, remember your hear for a reason

Categories Comments Campus Safety It's decent. I suppose there's karma when it comes to this. If you're going to do illegal stuff, it's not going to be surprising if something hit back, illegal responses or the cops.
Clubs and Activities Some of the clubs do need better leader or just more participation from the members. If you feel like you can improve it, then chances are you're what the club need!
Bang for the buck It's only as worthwhile as you make it. So if you want a really big boom, then make that boom!
What to do for fun There's all sort of things. Some needs more help finding then other, but it does exist.
Tips for prospective students Don't give up. Don't be discouraged. It's not too hard to succeed, and you don't need the support of those who seek your defeat.

Bang for the buck Its a GREAT school with great programs and its worth its money! I am giving it 4-stars because dorms ARE expensive! If you live in an apartment on campus, its totally worth it!
What to do for fun There are discounted bowling games for students, an area where you can go play games, a campus cinema, and many speakers and events that you will learn valuable info from! For the people that are over 21, there are bars that are open 7 days a week and have very good deals on drinks!
Food and Dining Building the new residence hall has come with a new food court! There are many options to choose from (hamburgers, fish, spaghetti, fresh salads, etc.) and it is very clean and organized!
Dorm Life Dorms are very fun! You meet many new people, and you always have something to do! I'm giving it 4-stars since you DO share space with someone!
Academic Rigor Teachers try to make some of the material difficult, but this is college! If it's not difficult, why would you be paying for those courses?! For example, I took a Geology class (and I am a communications major) to fulfill a science requirement. Thinking it would be easy, since you learn mostly about rocks, I was very wrong! Not only did I learn TONS of new info about the communities we live in, but I learned INTERESTING info of how our rivers and oceans formed. It definitely wasn't easy, but to this day, I remember things and compare them to everyday facts that I hear!
Tips for prospective students Get involved in student groups ASAP because you learn many valuable information. You not only learn how to create a resume, speak to potential bosses, but you also hear upperclassmen share their experiences in their job-seeking process. Most importantly, you MAKE CONNECTIONS!
In three sentences Northern offers students a chance to explore many different majors and classes. Advisers help you find an internship you'd like to try in order to see if the major you picked is right for you. Finally, there are so many opportunities to get involved, that it would be ridiculous not to!

Categories Comments Campus Safety On campus is very safe, but always travel with a friend after dark. Pepper spray is a good idea. Freshman year I left my car parked near a school building overnight and my driver's side window was smashed in. They took my iPod and scattered my bag and books in the bushes nearby. The campus police who handled my case very kind. That being said, there is some crime in bad areas of Dekalb. Use common sense and keep yourself out of unfortunate situations. I have yet to be mugged or shot.
Greek Life I can't really comment as I've never been a part of it! I have friends who participate and seem to enjoy it. I see it as a waste of money but that's my personal opinion.
Clubs and Activities I enjoy attending galleries hosted on and off campus. I am not affiliated with any specific group or club.
Great for these types of students Art, Music, Business, Law, Language, Education
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Dekalb hosts a lot of holiday related events, as well as a lot of free activities (ESPECIALLY for students). We also have the Convocation Center where there are a wide array of events: anything from music performances to science festivals.
Bang for the buck Going to college is expensive, period. Dekalb is a very economical school compared to other colleges. Although not especially prestigious, Northern Illinois University has important alumni and a very dedicated fan base. You will feel like a part of something much bigger than yourself. I love it here.
What to do for fun There are a ton of groups to join. If you can think of it, there's probably an organization or a club already for it already. Dekalb has a decent nightlife as long as you follow general safety precautions (don't drink out of cups you leave around at parties etc). Pretty standard college antics I'd say.
Food and Dining Dekalb has a lot of food to offer! And if you feel like driving an extra ten minutes Sycamore has even more options. Anything from chinese to mexican to fast food to home cooked, we've got your stomach covered.
Dorm Life It all depends on where you stay. Some of the residence halls have great student dining... Don't even get me started on the newer dorms. They were just build and are absolutely stunning.
Academic Rigor I find Northern's coursework to be anywhere from relatively easy to challenging depending on the subject. I take a lot of art classes so the subjects a bit subjective to me.
Tips for prospective students Try to get a dorm room to yourself, even if it costs extra. There's nothing like trying to study next to someone blaring music you find distasteful. Learn to do basic things for yourself if you haven't already. Laundry is a necessity. If you bring your car to Northern, brace yourself for parking nightmares.
In three sentences Northern is a great school with lots of diversity. The school is a thriving network of professionals and students. The campus is beautiful, too.

Food and Dining Many varieties to choose from whether its the food you want to eat or the resident hall you choose to eat in.
Dorm Life Very active and sometimes noisy. Always friendly and talkative.
Academic Rigor Classes are harder than high school classes. You have to pay attention and make sure to ask your professors about the work you are struggling with. Professors are helpful when you approach them.
Tips for prospective students Study hard for your exams. Keep up with all class work. Choose your classes wisely for each semester. Make sure you get scholarships to help pay.

Academic Rigor If you attend class daily and follow the syllabus, you can keep up. Take lots of notes in class and during any reading assignments. I find the academic rigor challenging but manageable.
Tips for prospective students Even if you are unsure of your major, work on getting those Gen Eds out of the way early. Speak with students already attending the school to find out the ins and outs of campus life. Research scholarships online because there is money out there to help support your educational needs.
In three sentences A very welcoming school that goes out of their way to help you succeed, even as a non-traditional student. I find the theatre program exceptional. As a commuting student, I find the campus easy to get to.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I think NIU gets a really bad reputation because of the crime that has happened on campus, but as you walk around you will never not see a cop walking around. They are everywhere in their cars, or on foot. I think students need to be more careful when walking home by themselves. The crime happens in the early mornings and the victums are usually alone.
Clubs and Activities Any kind of club you could think of NIU has.
What to do for fun I like to hang out with friends on campus. It is really important to find a sorority or frat, club, or sport that you would enjoy doing to get involved with the campus. The kids who just go to school for parties will not get the full experience out of college.
Food and Dining I have had a couple of the dorm foods with friends before and I do not think they are as bad as people say that it is. Most kids are used to their parents home cooking and thats why I think dorm food is such a shock to them.
Dorm Life I do not stay in the dorms because I communted last year and this year my dad said that I could when it was too late. I have heard horror storys from some people and I have heard awesome things from other people. The main thing is to get along with your roommate at all costs. Do not try to step on each others toes or your semester will drag.
Academic Rigor Most of the teachers at Northern are really accommodating and as long as you do as your asked there should not be a problem. A lot of kids get into drinking and partying and it is important to really pay attention to school work because it is easy to get behind.
Tips for prospective students Make sure to use the buddy system on campus. Always stay on the positive side college can really bring people down and it takes a strong person to be able to overcome it. Do not room with a best friend although it may seem like a good move you never really know someone until you live with them.
In three sentences I like Northern Illinois University. I think it gets a bad rap because of the things that have happened at this campus, but I think people need to realize crime happens everywhere. I think people should give it a chance.

Dorm Life Dorm life is great if you want it to be and to do this you must get to know all of your floor mates and participate in the activities.
Academic Rigor A lot is expected of all students.
Tips for prospective students Students who are thinking about coming here should get to know former students and come visit the school qand make good connections.

Categories Comments Campus Safety NIU campus safety and police department works well in making sure students stay safe. We have alert polls where students can press if there is an emergency all around campus. We also have huskie patrols which are students who can walk with you if you need them to when its dark out. The police also waits inside the dorms starting at 11pm unitl 6am to check and see if non-students are trespassing.
Clubs and Activities NIU offers over 100 organizations to get involved in. Some can be chosen by your major, ethnicity, or other aspects.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is a location where the words Forward, Together Forward are engraved to build excellence to let students know to continue to strive no matter what comes their way.
Bang for the buck There is a website for student employment so you can always apply for jobs. The NIU campus also offers various opportunities to find a job on and off campus.
What to do for fun There is a lot of things to do for fun around NIU. There's always a sporting event going on so going to the games could be a refresher as well as bowling in the student center or getting involved with the campus activities crew and putting together your own activities.
Food and Dining The food and dining is great as well. NIU offers a variety of food in buffet, all-you-care to eat style dining, as well as a food court option and grab-n-go options. Healthy options and vegetarian options are also available. I think they do a good job in promoting better nutrition for students.
Dorm Life The dorm life is great! NIU residence halls gives you an opportunity to meet new people and get involved in your dorm. You can become a Community Advisor which gives you the opportunity to build your leadership skills and you can also volunteer to do tours for your dorm. NIU is also upgrading their residence hall and just built a new residence hall that I reside in and is renovating others.
Academic Rigor It really depends on your major. Most of the general education classes are simple, but some are going to be tough. NIU offers a ton of tutors and resource centers to help you stay on track. The teacher assistants and graduate assistants also do a great job in making sure every student has academic success.
Tips for prospective students NIU is one of the second largest universities in Illinois and the tuition can be expensive but there is always financial aid and scholarship counselors to help you. I would just tell you to budget correctly and try to look at the more important things. I would also tell you to get involved on campus. NIU is big on campus involvement and volunteering and improving your leadership skills can take you a long way in life.
In three sentences Northern is a very diverse university. They really thrive to meet the needs of the students. NIU has top professors who go above and beyond to meet academic needs of students.

Categories Comments What to do for fun For fun I hang out with friends at their dorms. I play on women's rugby team at NIU. I eat out with friends. The football games are the best. There is always something to do on campus. You just have to be alert and ask around. If you are a part of an organization then you will be invited to many fun things.
Food and Dining My favorite dining halls are Stevenson and New Hall. They have the most variety and a choice for vegetarians. If you get tired of eating at the dining halls, there are many fast foods and restaurants around including McDonald's, Burger King, IHOP, and many others. Also, you can take buses to places like Buffalo Wild Wings or Apple Bee's. There are many choices around campus that you can choose from which seems to please everyone.
Dorm Life Specifically, I live in Neptune on an all girls floor. In my opinion, the girls are very friendly and my CA is the coolest. I get along with my roommate very well and we agree on most of the same things. If you get stuck with someone you can not deal with, then make sure you get that fixed right away by speaking with your roommate or moving somewhere else of your choice. You do not have to deal with them if you do not want to. The people are very friendly and there is always some kind of activity going on. So, if you are thinking of trying it, then go for it! It is great.
Academic Rigor The academics are as hard as you make it. They are definitely a challenge but that is why you have to try extra hard in order to get the grades you want. All the resources are there, use them and you will be fine. You definitely have to study a lot more in college if you are not used to doing so in high school.
Tips for prospective students If students want a friendly environment with easy to make friends, then NIU is for them. As long as they get involved on campus then they will have a great experience. However, if you just sit in your dorm all day and go to classes then you should not really bother dorming. Get involved with the community and you will see that you will not regret your choice of coming to NIU. Go Huskies!
In three sentences Northern Illinois University is so alive and friendly. There are always people who will go above and beyond to help you out. I am no longer scared of the college life after finally experiencing it for a semester.

Categories Comments Campus Safety 5 Stars: I give campus safety the highest marks because it's a very safe environment here. There is plenty security on campus as NIU has its own full-time police force that has the same powers and responsibilities as any city or county police force. There are also Community Safety Centers in each residence hall staffed with officers. Access to the dorms are controlled, one can request an escort for late classes through Huskie Student Patrol, there is Late Night Ride Service anywhere in the DeKalb area (no questions asked) and for those who have cars and drive there is Motorist Assistance. Security is definitely top-notch!
Greek Life Practically all Greek organizations are represented on campus, a total of 36 social Greek organizations, and over 200 clubs run by students that let you get involved with the group of your choice. Being a Freshman, I have not expressed interest in any organization at this time.
Clubs and Activities 4 Stars: There are so many clubs in which one can join and activities that appeal to any level of interest such as sports clubs that represent all sports, ethnic clubs representing Blacks, Asians, Latinos, Lesbians, Gay, Native Indians, etc. There are several activities in which to participate such as organized sports for women and men, working out in the gym, bowling, concerts at the Convocation Center with mainstream artists, movies and so much more.
Great for these types of students The very hard working, studious student, the bold confident student, the shy student and any types in-between can find their niche at NIU and feel comfortable with themselves just as they are. This is true primarily because NIU appeals to students from all walks of life; it has close to 30,000 students from all over the world so you are bound to find your connection.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Well on most campuses the fight song is a main tradition. But at NIU, the fight song is known throughout campus complete with words and visuals. During Homecoming week there is a Yell Like Hell tradition which is a combination of yelling and dancing that student groups take part in to promote team spirit. A gargoyle statue located in the garden of Altgeld Hall was struck by lightening after the first NIU graduation ceremony. A year later, lightening struck it again so it was moved in fear of its safety.
Bang for the buck 5 Stars: The best bang for the buck at NIU is the education itself as several of its college programs such as the College of Business, College of Engineering and College of Education are consistently ranked high in performance by prestigious publications Businessweek U.S. News & World Report, Crains Chicago Business. Also, NIU ranks in the top third of PayScale.com College Return on Investment Package which measures what you pay to attend versus what you get back in lifetime earnings.
What to do for fun There are a variety of activities you can participate in for fun offered by the many clubs such as the Water Polo Club, Horror Club, Sports Club, parties hosted by Greek organizations and clubs, on campus bowling, concerts at the Convocation Center featuring the nation's top entertainers, plays and great theater, musical performances by music majors, etc.
Food and Dining 3 1/2 Stars: There is excellent food in many places you can eat throughout campus offering a wide variety everyday so you¢re never bored with the same thing. The dining halls feature salad bars, buffets, sandwiches, something quick for those on the go, full-balanced meals offered a-la-carte as well as the all-you-can-eat dining facility at Douglas Hall. The Dog Pound Deli is one of the most popular spots because you can get made-to-order sandwiches on fresh bread and also dessert. The food on campus is very reasonably priced and many of the off-campus restaurants offer students special discounts.
Dorm Life 4 Stars: Dorm life is a beautiful thing because you are living on your own and I learned fast that you also have to balance that level of freedom with responsibility. Each dorm has its own lounge, recreation center, laundry room and computer lab making it very convenient. Each dorm also has its own unique atmosphere but there is a camaraderie among students that permeates the campus regardless of what dorm you live in so it's all like one big happy family anyway. There are special activities in each dorm that you can get involved in and you meet a lot of really nice people, though some are not as nice as others. However, you learn to be tolerant and get to experience what it is like living with another person other than a sibling or family member. It's both rewarding and challenging but so is life and this is what college is preparing me for.
Academic Rigor 4 Stars: The philosophy or learning in college is much different than what's experienced in high school so making that transition can be difficult at first. You are acquiring book knowledge combined with life lessons such as discipline. There is no hand-holding like in high school and at times you feel like you are on your own completely without any support. But the instructors are great and there are counselors and tutors to assist through the transition. The learning experience is challenging and engaging and relevant to life's lessons. My favorite class is Philosophy.
Tips for prospective students I recommend that you attend one of several detailed orientations offered throughout the year and take a tour of the campus during the academic season while school is in session fully to get an idea of the ambiance and energy of the campus. Come with an open mind and a list of questions you may have because the first visit can be an overwhelming experience and you will find yourself forgetting some of the questions. Take a tour of the campus and make sure you visit at least one room in each of the dorms.
In three sentences Northern Illinois University was my first choice for college and I am having a wonderful time during my first year here filled with challenges and learning experiences. NIU is the second largest university in the state, very diverse and contains everything you need to complete a 4-year degree. Our football team, the Huskies had a great football season and as such is the first MAC team to earn a Discover Orange Bowl Championship Series berth...Go Huskies!

What to do for fun You can go bowling in the Huskie den and you can play pool. There are some parties that go on sometimes. You can also go out to eat and catch a movie.
Food and Dining The food is very good! Just eat right and exercise and you will not gain that freshmen 15
Dorm Life Dorm life is fine. Do not listen that rumor about dorming with your friends. If you feel that it is going to be a problem then feel free to live with a new person. But be prepare to talk about certain things that you will want to happen in the room. If there is not clear communication, then you guys will not get along. Oh yeah the community bathroom with gross you out. If you living with all girls like I do, they bathroom may not every stay clean.
Academic Rigor Nothing is perfect but there are some teachers that can really help you make it throught their class. But if you do not use the people around you then you will not better yourself. The staff can only do what they can to help you so help them help you.
Tips for prospective students If you do not know what you are majoring in, it is okay. You can take the time to look up information about the many different programs that the University have and make a choice then. Do not feel bad about switching your major. Do what you feel is right for you.
In three sentences It is a place where if you need help, there are many people there who are willing to help you. Categories Comments What to do for fun You can work out, go to sport games, go to clubs and organizations, or hang out with friends. there is a lot to do but you have to seek out the opportunities.
Food and Dining The food is okay, but it really does depend on where you eat. There are multiple residence halls that all serve different food, some will also be similar. It's college food so maybe after a month you will miss some home cooked meals.
Dorm Life Dorm life isn't too bad. Some residence halls are with stand-able to live in. There are new residence halls, renovated ones, and old ones, and the prices do vary.
Academic Rigor I think the classes here are a bit challenging but depending on your leveled course, but there are some course like electives that can be really easy, it depends on the class I'll say.
Tips for prospective students Northern Illinois is a pretty average school. When I say average, I'm not exaggerating, it's average across all subjects; girls, guys, dorms, food, college life, but this is just my opinion, college is what you make it. NIU has a lot to offer, it depends on what you are looking for.
In three sentences Northern Illinois is a pretty average school and average when it comes to everything. NIU is also more affordable compared to other universities within the state. NIU is not that hard to get accepted to as well.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are NIU police everywhere! They drive Toyota Prius's, which many students find humorous. And to contrary belief, they are pretty lenient. If you are scared to walk home, they will personally walk you to wherever you need to go. If you are going out on the weekend, they have Late Night Ride, which will take you to and from your destination, no questions asked. And if things do get out of hand, or someone gets hurt, the NIU police are trained as EMT's as well.
Greek Life There are over 36 Greek organizations. Even though NIU just got a bad rap for their Greek system, don't let that fool you. The Greek system has core values, each different from each other. When you rush, you find the organization that's right for you.
Clubs and Activities There is so much to do on campus, all you have to do is look for flyers and ask around. From Helping Hands, to Anime Club, Model UN, even Human vs. Zombies, there's something for everyone.
Great for these types of students NIU is for everyone! We are a diverse community, and we are tolerant of everyone!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Do not step on the NIU seal in the Founder's library, or in the presidential room! If you step on that seal, YOU WILL NEVER GRADUATE! If you are skeptical, go ahead and try it. But if something prevents you from graduating... you know where you went wrong.
Bang for the buck It all depends. If you are in a financial sting, definitely apply for as many scholarships as you can. Nobody wants to have to move out because they can't pay their bill.
What to do for fun There are over 200 clubs, which are all led by students, and there are over 36 social Greek organizations. Needless to say, the only thing you really have to do is step outside of your dorm and see what's right for you. Even if you don't leave your dorm, they still have things going on! Dorms often have movie nights, sporting events, get to know you events, and more. You just need to look!
Food and Dining To be truthful, the food is pretty good. Granted, it's still college cafeteria food, but you'd be surprised. They offer a variety of meals to vegans and meat lovers alike. Surprisingly, they seldom repeat the menus. Nobody is ever going to go hungry, and with the different rates of meal plans, there is something to suit everyone.
Dorm Life Whether you live in a cluster like me, a tower such as Stevenson and grant, or a building such as Neptune and Lincoln, there is always something to do. All it really takes is a meet and greet with floor mates. Nobody ever has to be alone.
Academic Rigor The classes aren't too hard, depending on your major. It's very different from high school in the sense that your on your own. There are no reminders when things are due, but when you get everything done on time, it's very rewarding.
Tips for prospective students Apply for as many scholarships as you can, and apply for financial aid. Nobody wants to be struggling to go to school, and if you have enough scholarships, you can get paid to go to school!
In three sentences NIU is a great place for academics and activities. The university always has something going on, so nobody has to be bored. If you get homesick, it's close to home.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Not too bad, I have felt pretty safe. They are building a brand new police station across from campus.
Greek Life Very big on campus
Great for these types of students People that don't want to deal with long/time consuming commutes to and from Chicago.
What to do for fun Bars, outdoorsy stuff, local history, not extremely far from major cities.
Food and Dining Not too bad. Good selection of restaurants in the area and nice little places here and there.
Dorm Life I don't have any experience with this.
Academic Rigor You get a decent amount of homework, but you learn a lot.
Tips for prospective students Commuter paces make parking easier, but parking isn't the greatest. Rent is cheaper in surrounding cities and the areas further away from campus are nicer/quieter.
In three sentences Great teachers and good price compared to other universities.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I have to say the campus police, judicial system does the best work on their job! I'd give them a 9 but they deserve a 10 for their quick process!
Greek Life Hate it :( Rating a 1, because a lot of the Greeks here are racially bound.
Clubs and Activities I do a lot on campus, Normally with Black Student Union, or Forensic Debate Team, or Trio. I'll give Clubs here a 10!
Great for these types of students Greek Life for preppier kids, Techno Club for the Nerd-er kids, and Forsenic Team and Debate for the serious kids Like me :) A 10 for rating!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Probates are new to me, the whole hazing thing is unusual to see. But nice to have a laugh. A 5 for rating.
Bang for the buck Not quite sure what that means, but if it was food, I'd like to see it on campus! I'd give a try a 10!
What to do for fun There is always something to do on campus, but not a lot to pick from If you do not substance abuse. It be great if there were a cinema or a 1 bowling day on Fridays instead of the parties. A 5 is my rate for student affairs.
Food and Dining Food is great, just need to spice it up or change it up. Gets a bit tiring. A 5 for my rating.
Dorm Life Dorm life could be awesome if there wasn't so many rules in place. Often also when I be in my room, the ceiling would leak. Staff are very slow on repairs. Through personal experience, they did not take full intent with picking roommates. A 5 is my rate for student Housing.
Academic Rigor The Academic process here is very crucial, because If you are not on stand still that's good enough they make it a business to send you home. Very good, though, has nice instructors and facilities to help out. An 10 is my rate.
Tips for prospective students Try and make the university home, there are big opportunities here to get used to but there are also big distraction to get used to, just have to know the balance. 10 is my rate.
In three sentences I rate Northern Illinois University a 10 on academic performance. I rate Northern Illinois University a 7 on student affairs. I rate Northern Illinois a 5 on student housing.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus police have gotten excellent reports from top government agencies in their efforts in the town especially since the shooting in 2008. The men and women in uniform here know how to deal with students and also they use a judicial affairs system instead of sending students to the city police. It's better that way the students wouldn't have issues on their record permanently.
Greek Life The Greek Life on campus has a lot of support from the students. The events on campus they put on are very promoting of unity and expression.
Clubs and Activities There are many different clubs and activities around this campus. They cover everything from academic clubs to Quiddage (Harry Potter game). Even if a student didn't want any of the myriad of clubs on campus there is still the choice to start your own and make an impact!
Great for these types of students This campus is great for any student who really wants to be away and isolated from there usual surroundings. The town offers that and it helps the student make a connection and gives one a new start.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is a rumor that if you fall in the river here you will most likely live in the town for life.
Bang for the buck Again this town not just the university has many hidden gems. Example would be several of the professors who are researchers and assistants to some groundbreaking technology, language and linguistic research, as well as non-profit development.
What to do for fun The community has bars for those who are of age, and there are other little spots where folks can get together and listen to music like the House Cafe, if not the campus has plenty of organizations and activities that can give one that much needed social capital as well as some fun.
Food and Dining The dining program here employs mostly students and serves quality foods. All dining areas have lists to show diet needs and allergens. The community also offers a variety of unique restaurants, ice cream shoppes, etc., and for the not so financially adept there are many pantries, and programs that are available so that no person will starve.
Dorm Life Most of the dorms here have been remodeled and there is also a brand new dorm that has just been built with everything a new student needs from exercise to study halls and of course good eats. This campus is quickly becoming state of the art.
Academic Rigor Depending on what classes you take there is everything from easy A to intense. The best programs here I feel are in the foreign languages, business, and music.
Tips for prospective students Be ready to be about your work because the same pitfalls you see here will be everywhere.
In three sentences This is school that has many hidden gems but with patience, initiative, and a positive outlook, I'm assured that anyone would be able to make a positive impact on their life. The community, school, and area are all special and it brings together the whole concept going away to school.

What to do for fun Get involved with the greek life, make new friends and go to some parties, and go to as many events as possible
Tips for prospective students Come to college with a clear mind and remember that this nothing like high school.

Great for these types of students Nowhere else to go or dont care.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus NIU Tugs look it up on youtube. extreme tug of war.
Bang for the buck They get you with hidden fees everywhere
What to do for fun There is very little to do besides party and work out. Campus gets very windy and cold and its a long walk to get anywhere.
Food and Dining The food is really good for a few weeks but then it starts getting old but overall great for a college.
Dorm Life I had a great roomate but I am the only one I know who is and a roomate makes or breaks this.
Academic Rigor Some teachers are good most are just ok.
Tips for prospective students Come and visit a friend here and get to know what campus is really like instead of just what they show you which just happens to be to good parts.
In three sentences Northern seems great at first but dont listen to the tours. There is a ton of crime, partially because of the chance program and partially because there are projects a 3 minute walk from campus. While the parties can be fun NIU is the fourth most dangerous campus in the country for a reason.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck I personally don't think you get the full bang for your buck. I pay a lot for room and board and feel like I don't get what I pay for.
What to do for fun I hang out with the people on my floor and a few other friends. There is not much to do in town. There is a movie theatre and bowing alley.
Food and Dining The food is decent but eating the same things all the time can get very old. I also wish there were more healty options eating salads is about all they have for healthy food.
Dorm Life I currently live in Stevenson and it really needs some updating and new things. The bathrooms are old and gross looking and the paint is chipping in the rooms.
Academic Rigor The program I am in is really good. I feel like I am learning a lot and the professors enjoy helping you.
Tips for prospective students Make sure to take a campus tour and talk to students that are already in your program.

Greek Life The greek life is great like any other school! Just be safe and know your limits and DO NOT give into peer pressure.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Football games are great to attend!
Bang for the buck Buying books for classes will hurt your pocket unless you talk to people around campus or even use social networks. It works and TIME management will save your life.
What to do for fun Join any clubs, organization's, don't be afraid to talk to people about joining. Apply to be a CA your freshman year.
Food and Dining The food here is GREAT. You will catch that Freshman 15 unless you use that gym!
Dorm Life The dorm life here can be good but only if you interact with people and get involved on campus.
Academic Rigor The school is very wordy with classes and you can't slack off at all here.
Tips for prospective students Don't slack off, stay on your A game. Many opportunities for scholarship money. Don't be in a rush to buy books on campus.

Categories Comments Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Do not step on the crest on the floor at The Founder's Memorial Library or Altgeld hall!! Legend has it you won't graduate on time if you do.
What to do for fun Every weekend NIU offers activities for students; whether it's a dance show, Frat Attack week, a movie in the park or a party at the rec, there is always something to do.
Food and Dining Freshman 15 is no joke! With a 24 hour IHOP right around the corner from campus and weekly meal plan money, you're sure to put on some weight! The food isn't mom's home cooking but it gets the job done.
Dorm Life The residence halls on campus are a lot of fun! You get to meet others from different countries, and interact with grad students who live on your floor! It is a little challenging getting adjusted to the tiny rooms.
Academic Rigor If things are easy for you, you're not doing something right. You are expected to struggle in class sometimes and that is when you seek help. There are numerous tutoring opportunities on campus that are FREE!
Tips for prospective students Take a tour of the campus, ask questions and network! Networking is key at this university.

Food and Dining The food is good and there are many places to go to when you want to eat. When you enroll, you get a choice of a meal plan for the dining halls you can go to. The dining halls offer many choices from healthy vegetarian foods to handmade supreme toppings pizza.
Dorm Life I live in Lincoln Hall at this moment and it hasn't been too bad. The only issue is the other residents who mess up the floor and gets everyone else fined for pranks. I'm okay with the no surveillance but something's gotta be done when no one respects our Community Adviser.
Academic Rigor The professors are often attempting to teach us something new, but sometimes you may get a professor who doesn't realize that they are doing a decent job at teaching you lessons. You would still learn something if you paid attention and got involved.
Tips for prospective students During your first year, use the university's website to find a job. Check the website for the amount of clubs available for you as their are bound to be a few that peak your interest. Make sure to figure out your professor's office hours so that you may chat with them whenever you need to.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students ALL!
Bang for the buck As far as universities come, NIU is relatively inexpensive. I have never once regretted my decision to come here.
What to do for fun Bars Movie Theatre Bowling Alley Pool Hall Amazing dining!
Food and Dining While it isn't gourmet or homecooked food, the dining at NIU is great. There are dining halls all over campus, which all specialize in different things. Some of the specialty foods they make are so good that I actually crave them!
Dorm Life Dorm life at NIU really depends on the type of person you are. I don't like the idea of dorm life in general, because I appreciate my solitude at times (especially when I need to study). However the facilities are really nice, and incredibly secure. Good overall.
Academic Rigor The administration can be a little lax on the academic rigor. It's really what you make of it. If you want to get the most out of your education, you are able to easily do that here though.
Tips for prospective students Check out the University Honors program here! They are a great resource if you qualify. Also, take the time to check out all of the areas of study they have to offer. I've been here for almost a year and I'm still finding out about new departments or programs.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are cops all over campus, but there is still a bunch of crime that occurs.
Great for these types of students This school is great for students wanting to get a quality education, close to home and cheap.
What to do for fun There really isn't a ton of stuff to do in DeKalb, there's a few good bars and restaurants, but not a lot of nightlife.
Food and Dining There are plenty of places to eat around campus.
Dorm Life I never lived in the dorms, but from what I've seen of them, they weren't that great compared to other schools I've been to.
Academic Rigor I definitely feel challenged within my major.
Tips for prospective students Plan your schedule well, the campus is long and can take a while to get from one end of campus to the other. Be safe when traveling at night--there have been some shootings and robberies, but if you're careful, you'll be fine. And if you commute, you don't have to buy a parking pass, there are plenty of places to park for free.

What to do for fun Always some kind of activity going on right outside the dorms. Any sport you can think of, LARPING, tug o war, paint ball teams, and more.
Food and Dining For college, it is amazing. Many different types of food to eat. Each dorm has daily specials. This is one of the activities that really brings students from other dorms together.
Dorm Life Dorm life is terrible. Drug control is poor and many criminal activities take place without any attempt to stop them. Each dorm is very different and extremely divided. Hard to meet new people.
Academic Rigor Overall, the work you put into your classes is not reflected by your grades at all. Many teachers grade very strictly. Tests are even curved against you sometimes to help the grad students.
Tips for prospective students If you are majoring in mathematics or any need any math classes under Calc 1, i would not recommend this school.
In three sentences NIU is a very well-rounded school. I feel certain areas are weaker than they are advertised. Education is suppose to be a large focus for this school, yet many of the teachers are actually grad students trying to achieve their masters.

Categories Comments Campus Safety NIU police are everywhere, always. They love to give out tickets, so be careful when driving and watch where you park. Crime still happens occasionally, but on campus is usually safe. The police respond quickly and send out alerts whenever something happens. People also patrol the campus is groups of two or three during the night, and the dorms have security from 11 PM to 7 AM.
Greek Life Greek life is good for those who are interested. There's a rivalry between some Greeks and non-Greeks, but most people don't care. Greeks do a lot of activities on campus, but there's a lot of obligations if you decide to join a sorority or fraternity.
Clubs and Activities There are a lot of different clubs you can join, from juggling, to modeling, to quidditch. There are tons of things to do, and if there isn't one you want to join, you can very easily create a new club.
Bang for the buck Paying for college really sucks, but NIU is pretty cheap compared to some universities. Take advantage of things that are cheap or free while you can, like the bus system. Buses are free to use. Why pay gas money when you can ride free on the bus. But cars are still nice for convenience when you need them.
What to do for fun There isn't much around here, but the campus has cheap bowling, pool table games in the student center, there's a couple pools on campus, the rec center and field house have different options for exercise/sports, and there's a few other things in town. Downtown Dekalb (near campus) has a few good places.
Food and Dining They have decent food; some places are healthier than others. A few dorms offer unlimited dining plans (which is cheapest) and others have weekly budget plans (unlimited, $60, $90, and $110). Lots of options, and many restaurants take Huskie bucks, money on your id card.
Dorm Life Each person will have a different experience in their own res hall. Some res halls are much nicer than others. They just reopened Gilbert to seniors and juniors, they renovated Grant, and they built the New Hall. Try to get along people on your floor; it'll make the experience much better.
Academic Rigor Depending on the class and professor, some are harder than others. Stay on the professors good side and he or she will be more likely to help out if you struggle in the class. Most gen ed classes are fairly easy.
Tips for prospective students Do you work. Do well during your first years because once your GPA falls, getting it back up will be very difficult. If you want/need any scholarships, keep your grades up. But don't forget to have fun, too.
In three sentences NIU is a great school and has a lot of different majors and minors to choose from. It's decent priced, but the financial aid office can be a little difficult to deal with if you have any problems. As long as you try to do well and don't slack off too much, you should do great.
