Great for these types of students

The university may not be huge, but it has its groups of people just as well. I've met every type of student here, from sorority girls to eclectic theatre students. You have options of so many community things to get involved in, and the staff here is amazing! I've never met nicer people working for a college.....ever.

    Tips for prospective students

NKU is what you make of it. If you are a commuter student, then you have to work harder to create a fun (yet hard-working) semester. That's why I would recommend living on campus if possible, you're more connected to everything!

    Bang for the buck

When they say, a private school education for a public school price, they aren't lying.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus IS still growing and getting great new modern buildings. Only thing is, it's still pretty much a commuter school.

    Am learning a lot

The school is quickly becoming well-known for its academics now more than ever.

    Bang for the buck

I have yet to take my first classes, but the tuition is cheap and I expect a college experience, so it will definitely be better than high school.

    Will enjoy being here

I was really both intimidated and impressed by the facility and staff that I met when I visited. All of the buildings are relatively new and the dorms are very inviting. I was mostly impressed by how friendly the staff members were when I visited the music department during my entrance audition.

    Will learn a lot

The staff seems to be very well qualified and the student to faculty ratio is small, so it will be easier to get one-on-one time with your teachers.

Great for these types of students

This school is perfect for students that have a drive to succeed. The Honors program is one of a kind, and is something that high-ranked students should look into. It's great for students that want to be involved as well! Students interested in informatics should definitely consider NKU, as we are one of 3 schools in the nation with a college of informatics. A new state-of-the-art building is also in the works, and is planning to open in Fall 2011. NKU is NOT a party school. It is mainly a commuter school, but students that live on campus usually leave on the weekends. It is a quiet campus and there are no frat/sorority houses.

    Tips for prospective students

Take a campus tour and APPLY EARLY! First year scholarships are the biggest, but the deadline for consideration is in mid-January. Many of the merit scholarships are renewable, so having them really adds up. Also, applying early gives you an earlier orientation date, and there's a much larger class selection that way!

    Bang for the buck

As far as tuition, NKU is one of the least expensive schools in Kentucky, and offers a high quality level of education. The classes really do have a private school feel, and compared to the price, it is a GREAT deal. Still, on-campus residents are required to have a meal plan, which runs around $2,500 per year, and many of the meals may go unused. Also, some housing buildings are a bit overpriced, but that is the case with most schools.

    Am enjoying being here

I am the only person from my high school's graduation class to attend this school, but I am very involved and feel at home at NKU. There are so many activities and clubs that every student can find a place to fit in. I am a member of a sorority and a new campus organization, and I am also a current student athlete. Joining clubs and participating in campus activities really enhance your college experience and NKU is a great place to feel involved.

    Am learning a lot

The small class sizes provide every student with more individualized learning opportunities. This is very helpful for students, especially in their first-semester of college, to adjust from the transition to college. Students involved in the NKU Honors Program are exposed to more discussion and project-based learning, too. This has been really helpful for me, as I have learned new, innovative ways of thinking and creative ways to present information. The Honors classes offer a unique experience that I wouldn't pass up!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The old university center used to be the student union building. The new student union building is well designed, and has a lot to do inside it.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is very reasonable for everything NKU has to offer.

    What to do for fun

There are all kinds of activities to do on campus, but there are also quite a few parks around. NKU is also close to Newport on the Levee and downtown Cincinnati.

    Food and Dining

There are many choices and mutipule locations on campus to get food and drinks.

    Dorm Life

Most of the dorms are really nice. You have a choice of living in a 2 roommate dorm, or a 4 roommate one. The 4 roommate rooms are pretty big and include a kitchen and living area.

    Academic Rigor

You will be challenged academically, but if you keep your studies up, it is easy to stay head.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are a prospective student, I suggest going to an open house. I also suggest that if you become enrolled, make sure to go to the fresh fusions, and also get involved on campus. It is the best way to find new friends and keep grades up.

    In three sentences

NKU is a great school to go to. Most of the teachers are very challenging and understanding. It is also reasonably priced for such a large campus & great teachers.

    Bang for the buck

Great price for a quality education compared to other colleges of its caliber.

    What to do for fun

There is Greek Life on campus that is fun and affordable. It is NOT like other universities where they're stuck-up. NKU has a variety in special interest groups for both academic and non-academic interests. There is always something going on both on and off campus. Campus events (sports - We're Division 1 now!!, planetarium, fun random events) are FREE for students!

    Food and Dining

There is a good variety of cuisine available in the Student Union towards the center of campus. The cost is not the best, but it's about the same you would pay off-campus. I do not have experience with the dorms' dining facilities, though.

    Dorm Life

I have not lived on campus, but I have friends who are/have. There are some newer dorms that people rave about and some not-so-great older dorms. It just depends on which dorms you are assigned to or put down as your preference. Most dorms are close to classes and the food courts.

    Academic Rigor

Great wide selection of courses and subject matter. Professors are helpful and patient.

    Tips for prospective students

NKU is affordable and a great community to be part of. I would recommend this university to anyone who wants an affordable, yet quality education. There are a lot of activities available for all sorts of interests both on and off campus.

    In three sentences

I love NKU! I am a transfer student and this is by far the best college I have attended. The community is great and the people are friendly. There are a lot of free and fun activities available on campus all the time. The Greek Life at NKU is fun, do a lot of good for the community, and affordable compared to most universities. The professor are great and willing to communicate with students, unlike most universities I have attended. There are a lot of resources for students who require extra help like on-campus tutoring in all subjects for FREE! There are also a lot of different academic and non-academic clubs to choose from... even clubs for obscure interests.

    Bang for the buck

Your education can be just as good as any other if you put in the effort. However it will cost much less than an expensive private college.

    What to do for fun

    Hang out with friends.

    Academic Rigor

Although you can slack in lower classes, you will need to work hard and understand what your learning about to succeed

    Tips for prospective students

Apply early! Living at home can cut your costs in half.

    In three sentences

NKU is a huge opportunity at a future at an affordable price. It lets you get a great education without the full cost of a private school.

    Campus Safety

We have our own police department next to the campus and there are safety polls EVERYWHERE! In case something happens you can push the button and somebody will come to your location. I feel very safe on campus and even walk around when it is dark.

    Greek Life

We have 6 sororities and 5 fraternities on campus. There is no hazing and the sororitites and fraternities are helping eachother out. It does not matter whether you join greek life or not because you will make friends anyways. However I feel like a lot of stuff that is going on on camous is greek-related.

    Clubs and Activities

As I said before: there are so many opportunities to be engaged in the campus community. Langauge clubs, sport clubs, science, art, music, religious and cultural organizations...

Great for these types of students

The school is great for students that like to have a lot of action because there are so many different hings that you can do on campus. But I think it is also great for people who need their quiet time. There are so many loctations where you can just relaxe and the dorm rooms are quiet, too (no parties).

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

We have an oustide theater that is located next to a beautiful lake with ducks that like popcorn... It is nice to sit there in between classes and regenerate.

    Bang for the buck

College is expensive, but what I get for my money here is worth every penny. I love this university!

    What to do for fun

Join groups and clubs or go to the Rec center to work out or to take classes like Zumba, Yoga, or Kickboxing. There is always an event on campus or music outside with boothes.

    Food and Dining

There are soooo many different restaurants on campus. We have a lot of healthy choice restaurants and little convenient stores. We also have a Starbucks on campus.

    Dorm Life

I love my dorm room and my roommate. I have a kitchen and a full bath that I share with her, as well as a bedroom. There are many events for people who live on campus and the staff here is really nice and helps or fixes things for you.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are great and small. You learn a lot and the professors will help you if you have problems. There are also so many different classes and online classes. The times are great for everyone because the school offers classes from 8 am to 9.30pm!

    Tips for prospective students

If you can, live on campus. The residential village is nice and has different types of dorms ( traditional, apartments...). Try to engage in different clubs and events that are held on campus. It is so easy to make friends for a lifetime.

    In three sentences

The campus is amazing and everything is in walking distance(stores, food, starbucks, atms, campus bank...). The campus community is great and you can find diffeent clubs and organizations for everyone, we even have a Quidditch team! The classes are small and personal and the teachers are nice and care for their students.

It's so affordable to go to NKU. They try and help you out as much as they can with paying for school. Like they say you get a private school education for a public school cost.

    Am enjoying being here

NKU has over 15,000 students there, so you meet someone knew almost everyday. There is always something going on, so your never bored. The campus is growing and becoming a beautiful place to take your studies at. Also we might be going to division one!

    Am learning a lot

The small classes are more hands on and your professor actually knows who you are. So it makes it that much harder to skip class that day.

Great for students who want to make a difference. Great for students who want to pursue their dreams. Great for students who want to meet new people. Great for students who like to learn. Great for all types of students.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't doubt this commuter school its bigger than you think and will have an even bigger impact on you. Get involved, it's essential to your experience here. You get out what you put in, so if you aren't making the efforts to make the grades, be involved, and take advantage of NKU's opportunities then you wont get much out of it. Don't stress too much about your grades or the money, NKU offers lots of solutions.

    Bang for the buck

NKU is by far the cheapest university in KY.

    Am enjoying being here

I really do enjoy being here I have met wonderful people like the Dean and his wife along with several faculty who are very enthusiastic about NKU. I am also an active member of both Delta Zeta and PRSSA which really changed my life because it brought me closer to the heart of the students and the campus.

    Am learning a lot

NKU may practice traditional teaching styles in traditional settings at times but the majority of my experiences here have been far from ordinary. Professors have an array of personalities and passion for what they are teaching and like to remain on the level of the students by offering them more than textbook knowledge. Most of my classes we had a lot of discussions and they were about putting things in perspective or how they applied to us not just review over what happened. In addition, NKU offers a lot of clubs/organizations, study abroad programs, internships, and classes that allow students to learn more about themselves, others, and faculty on campus.

Pick something other then ART as a major, a few of my friends are art majors hate it here. Other then that we have a strong EMB, INF, medical facilities (although if your going to be in medicine consider UC), engineering program, and frankly the informatics program is awesome for anything computer related.

    Tips for prospective students

DO not go here for art. Wear a thick jacket during the winter. It is a dry campus but the cops are pretty cool to anyone who is caught. If you know the right people you can get anything of your wildest dreams accomplished. Honestly the people at NKU have been my biggest resource, more then any amount of books or classes can ever be. You won't know everything and you will not be the best in your field, but you can find the people who are. Use them.

    Bang for the buck

To be a bang it would need to be free. Although all things considered now that the informatics building is open IT IS WELL WORTH IT to be able to go in and get the fastest, most reliable internet I have ever had along with a secure connection and four floors of mac computers

The facilities are nice, the community is good, it is a dry campus, everybody is welcome and will find somewhere to fit in. Only complaint is the wind tunnel you seem to hit walking in any direction on campus.

    Am learning a lot

The teachers are dedicated to their work. The only issues that I have run into are with grading issues and preference. Play nice and you will probably walk with an A

    Tips for prospective students

NKU is one of the best schools around the tri-state, its commitment to student interaction gives NKU the look and feel of a private university and it has the most affordable tuition in Greater Cincinnati. Affordability, personal attention to students, and lively classroom discussions are just a few of the many reasons students choose Northern Kentucky University.

    Bang for the buck

Great for these types of students

NKU is the perfect fit for students wishing to commute or live close to Northern Kentucky, or students from small towns or communities who enjoy the community aspect of colleges. It is also perfect for returning and non traditional students, as well as students seeking a major in History or Informatics. Any student who seeks personalized attention, who would like a school tailored to their needs, should consider NKU.

    Tips for prospective students

As a prospective student, is wise to attend the Welcome Wednesdays, which are held most weeks throughout the year, to tour the campus and visit the classrooms. Also, contact Admissions and find out who the chair is of the department in which you wish to major, and schedule an advising appointment with them. Ask them many questions about course requirements, expected abilities and talents required from students, and employment prospects. They should be more than willing to help. For parents of prospective students, if your child's school offers field trips to the campus, please encourage them to go. The staff at NKU has a great way of making a child's first campus visit most accomodating. NKU offers an array of summer camp programs, which are continuing today, for grades 6-10. These are great ways for getting students to plan for their futures before they are in high school, and each camp is enjoyable to students. Among these camps are mathematics, technology, astronomy, and science, to name a few. I highly recommend these camps.

    Bang for the buck

This school, by far, has the greatest value of all the Kentucky public schools. It is still under $10,000 per year for undergraduates, and room and board is affordable as well. As of 2011, a four year program in total is less than $35,000, and the school offers numerous scholarships, in which most students qualify. There are scholarships offered for the children and relatives of alumni, for students who reside within Campbell, Boone, or Kenton county, for those who have attended Scott High School, and also scholarships for students from certain neighborhoods. NKU has the most value for those who are from its surrounding communities, as it is a very community driven school.

    Am enjoying being here

I really enjoy the History Department, since every instructor DEEPLY cares about each of their students, and is PASSIONATE about what they are teaching. The Anthropology Department is gradually improving, by continuing to hire staff that still work in their fields, and within a couple of years will be updated and current to the times. The school as a whole is very welcoming and friendly to new students, and it feels more like a small community, rather than a big school.

    Am learning a lot

The Anthropology Department has been an excellent sources of valuable insight into Native American cultures, both historic and prehistoric. American archaeology and anthropology are covered well, but I would like to learn more about Asian and Middle Eastern cultures. The History department is excellent in most aspects, especially in American history. It has a couple wonderful Africanist historians for the African period, and a great Southeastern Asia historian. I hope the future yields more Middle Eastern studies classes.

Great for these types of students

If you didn't exactly do great things in High School and want to prove to yourself you can succeed in a university environment, Northern Kentucky is a place where you can do that. As long as you stay up on your schoolwork and go to class you can do very well, but you have to be able to motivate YOURSELF, because there's nobody around at school to make you do anything you don't want to do yourself

    Tips for prospective students

Keep yourself busy with your schoolwork, but don't let that be all you do. Walk around and meet people and make yourself somewhat known around campus. If you can, stay in the dorms for at least one semester, its a good experience to have.

    Bang for the buck

Being that Northern is a relatively small campus and still in the transition from being largely a commuter college, I wouldn't rate it as the best overall college/university experience for the money you pay.

    Am enjoying being here

There's not many activities going on around campus, but classes are interesting enough and challenging enough to keep you busy. Also, living in the dorms in close somewhat close quarters to people, you become familiar with them and I've been able to make many friends and connections to people just living in the same building as them. Also, it is a pretty big step towards independence to be able to get out from your parents' house and have a place you can call your own.

    Am learning a lot

In both the classroom and living away from home for the first time, I was able to learn a lot about who I am as a person and as a student.

    Tips for prospective students

Kentucky has some well known universities - UK, U of L - to name a few. I think people want to be a part of that, But NKU offers just as much as those other schools - great campus, excellent academic programs, the latest in technology, reasonable tuition, plus Forbes voted NKU as one of America's Best Colleges in 2011! Go Norse!

NKU's population is small enough, that I feel more at ease and can receive individualized attention from my advisors and professors.

We have some of the brightest minds walking our campus. Every resource you can think of is available to you. We're a community based school but we students from all over the world.

    Academic Rigor

It all depends on the major you're going into. Some are extremely harder than others. But as far as overall academics, NKU has high standards. The cool thing is, if you're having legitimate problems that are affecting your school work, your professors and advisers are willing to work with you. Everybody just wants you to succeed.

    Tips for prospective students

My first tip for prospective students is to remember that nobody has a good freshman year of college. But, at NKU, there are so many different programs you can turn to when you need help. Staff and Faculty honestly care about the students, so take time to know some and also know the resources available to you and TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THEM!

    In three sentences

My opinion on NKU is that it is very up and coming. We have a great location, minutes from downtown Cincinnati, OH and Florence and Indiana. Also, the faculty and staff are amazing; they are willing to help in any way they can.

Highland Heights is a generally safe area. If you were to have any doubts, however, have no fear; NKU has it's own police department. Calling 7777 on any campus phone will connect them to you. In addition, they have alert boxes periodically on campus that will alert the police at the press of the button. Even Callahan Hall, a dorm only just off campus, has it's own stationed officer. The campus alert system is also extremely effective, alerting the community to crimes (even snow days) via text and email.

    Clubs and Activities

No shortage of clubs to join, though their website may be a little outdated. If you are on the alert, you can catch emails or posters about almost any activity; from video games to recreational sports, from Ultimate Frisbee to Dungeons and Dragons.

    In three sentences

Northern Kentucky University offers a private school education at a public school cost! The professors really encourage their students to dream big. I'm so proud to be an NKU norse!

    What to do for fun

Get to know your classmates/roommates. Go out and explore the area.

    Food and Dining

The few times that I did eat the food there, it was fairly good quality and modestly priced.

    Dorm Life

I honestly cannot answer this one because I commuted

    Academic Rigor

The department I worked with (music) was very challenging in many, many ways.

    Tips for prospective students

Study hard, get plenty of sleep, and consider riding the bus instead of buying a parking permit.

    In three sentences

NKU is a decent, affordable college for a student to receive an education. Resources are readily available for students on or off campus. Most departments have clear communications and are approachable.

    Campus Safety

They are really up-to-date with their safety. They are always out and about making sure everything is okay.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many clubs and things to do. If you and six other people want to do something or create a club you can.

    What to do for fun

They're are a lot of places to go for fun and everything is pretty close. They have basically everything you need.

    Food and Dining

Their food is amazing. Said and done

    Dorm Life

You will make so many new friends if you lived on campus. I only knew two people who were going to NKU and just by living on campus I've made so many other new friends.

    Academic Rigor

They're teachers are really understanding and they are fun and cool people.

    Tips for prospective students

Toga is a blast. It's this huge party put on by the TKEs, Tau Kappa Epsilons. Everyone dresses up in their best toga's and hangs out on campus, then goes to Pulse Night Club. Last year there were about 2,500 people that went. It's honestly a blast and is a good opportunity to meet people.

    What to do for fun

Everything! There's so much to do that you can't possibly do it all. With NKU going division one, sports are becoming bigger and bigger. Also, there are a lot of things that go on at the Bank of Kentucky Center. If you're into theatre, there are performances and movies that go on in the Art's building. And when you wanna get off campus, on Wednesdays everyone goes to Raniero's Pizzaria for karaoke night.

    Food and Dining

The food here is actually better than a lot of the other campus' I visited. There are a lot of varieties between Commons and Union food. In Union there are so many different mini-restaurants like Papa Johns and Starbucks. But there are also organic and healthy options. There's a lot of variety, so you don't get tired of the food as fast.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are very nice. Living in the dorms you experience something that commuters typically don't. You're forced to make new friends and you experience so much more. Living in a dorm is all part of the college experience.

    Academic Rigor

NKU offers a course load based on your academic abilities. If you tend to struggle in the classroom, they offer options and services for you. They are there for your benefit, they won't throw you in a class that you're not prepared for. On the opposite side, the Honors Program and other academically challenging classes require a lot of work but it only prepares you more for future endeavors.

    Tips for prospective students

Do your research. Don't attend a college just because your parents want you to go there. Don't attend simply because your friends are going there. You will spend the next four, give or take a few, years at this college and you need to enjoy it. Get involved with all the prospetive student activities, like campus visits and US Bank of Kentucky Center events.

    In three sentences

It's an absolutely beautiful campus. It's filled with qualified professors who truly care about the students and students who are there to gain an education. Campus is full of life; there's always something fun and interesting to do.

There are many places to eat on campus. But, where i eat usually is the Norse Commons, which is the dorms cafeteria area. Which is the home-cooked food, which i personally love.

    Dorm Life

I current live in the dorms and i love it. I love the RA and how well she interacts with us. I have met lots of new people.

    Academic Rigor

I feel like Northern Kentucky University gives you just the right level of work. They will not give you extremely hard assignments but they aren't not really easy either. They tailor them to your level of knowledge.

    Tips for prospective students

If you want a small, outgoing, and exciting school, northern is for you. There is always someone to talk to about anything and everything, and the activities that go on here are never ending.

100% here. I'm not into it but it is an option.

Great for these types of students

NKU is great for people who want to be involved in greek life, aka sororities or fraternities. There are often events held by the greek life people.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I've heard that there is a harry potter club and they ride around on their brooms.

    What to do for fun

Highland Heights is in the middle of no where. The school advertises that they are five minutes away from cincinnati but realistically most freshmen students don't bring cars, so if you want to go to cincinnati, be ready to take a 30-40 minute bus ride there.

    Food and Dining

Food is more times than not, cold. And I don't mean things like salad or things that are supposed to be cold, the food that should be warm or hot is 9 times out of 10, cold. I often see flies flying around, even touching food. And the manager seems like he doesn't really care.

    Dorm Life

It honestly depends on what dorm you are in but in general, they're alright.

    Tips for prospective students

Knowing what you want to do is best. Get to know your advisors, they can really help you figure out what is best for you, especially if you're undecided.

    In three sentences

The teachers over all seem interested in the subject they are teaching. Teachers are helpful. And classes are no bigger than 25-30 people.

Great for these types of students

The school is great for all types of students. However, it is best for those students wanting to attend a school that is always looking to be better. As our motto goes Dreamers Welcome

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The art around campus is unusual (like the dinosaur car or the man in the cage) but they add a little flair to the campus.

    What to do for fun

Since it is mainly a commuter school there isn't a lot to do on campus especially at night and on weekends but organizations are a great way to have fun and learn about the different places in the area that are good to attend.

    Food and Dining

It depends where you are, if you are in the main dorms I DON'T suggest that you eat much at the dorms cafe but the off campus dorm has better food and the Student Union has a wide variety and is GREAT! There are also mini cafe's around campus that are great including a Starbucks and Einstein Bagels.

    Dorm Life

Amazing! They are on top of maintenance, they are good about placing you where you want, and the wifi is amazing!

    Academic Rigor

It is great! It is top in research. We have small class sizes for almost every class which lets the professors get to know YOU. There are no grad student teachers. The professors are also very understanding when a situation arises, AS LONG AS YOU TALK TO THEM FIRST!

    Tips for prospective students

Join organizations! Especially if you are a commuter it will make your college experience much more enjoyable. Step out of your comfort zone! Meet new people, try new things! Take advantage of the numerous resources that NKU has to offer: advisers, professors, tutors, whatever you need!

    In three sentences

NKU is an amazing school. It has great organizations, great professors and state of the art facilities. The best part is the students are welcoming and knowledgeable about the school.

    Bang for the buck

NKU is the cheapest school in the area and gives you the same quality as UC for most programs. In some cases, I think the programs are better than some of the surrounding universities.

    What to do for fun

    Dorm Life

    Campus Safety

On busy mornings and afternoons, when there is a lot of traffic, there are NKU officers directing traffic and letting pedestrians cross so you're not late to class. Also, late at night there are officers on duty, ensuring safety. It is my impression that a lot of people think that the univeristy police officers are just a step above security guards. At NKU, most of our police officers used to be out there on the streets, so they have plenty of experience with real crime fighting.

    Greek Life

There aren't any Sorority or Frat Houses, but there are definitely sororities and fraternities at NKU. Instead, they have benches that they decorated. It's a good way to get involved with a group of people and make friends.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many ways to get involved at NKU. I don't participate in many at the moment but I hear about different clubs and events all the time.

Great for these types of students

Recent HS graduate, person coming back to school, person starting college later in life, Nursing students, Law students, Science students, Business students

    Bang for the buck

I'm basing that on what I pay, which is in-state tuition. And it's a great price! There are other schools out there that will offer a similar experience to NKU, but they can cost up to $30,000 a year.

    What to do for fun

There are ways to get involved, such as different clubs and such. We also have a really nice gym, I like to go swimming in the big pool. As I said in an earlier answer, many student go party with UC students in Clifton.

    Food and Dining

The food is pretty good. There is a wide variety. When I lived on campus, the dining hall near the dorms always had great food. The food located in the Student Union is good, but I would like it better if there were some foods offered on only some days, more like a cafeteria. But it's basically like the food court at a mall, except we have our own restaurants.

    Dorm Life

Since a large percentage of students are commuters, dorm life isn't quite like it is in the movies or at some other universities. On some weekends, especially during holidays, the campus is very quiet. Many students go party in Clifton (in Cincinnati, OH, where University of Cincinnati is located).

    Academic Rigor

Sometimes it depends on the professor, but I've found that those rumors about college being so easy that you can skip class whenever you want are NOT true at NKU. You've definitely got to show up for class, do the work and study in order to succeed. There is also an Honors Program at NKU, where student can take specific accelerated classes such as English, but there are also courses that are Honors courses. These courses vary from courses about types of film to a class about chocolate. They're very challenging and offer a lot of room for creativity and individuality.

    Tips for prospective students

I definitely recommend joining some sort of club or extracurricular activity. There are a lot of students and it's good to have a group of people you can always go to. I also recommend doing the orientation/overnight as early as possible so you can still sign up for the classes you want/need without too much of a crazy schedule. I'd also like to tell you that there are SO many resources available to you at NKU, there's writing help in the library, free tutoring sessions that are a part of some classes and even a whole department dedicated to helping you find the right major/program of study (Academic Resource Center).

    In three sentences

NKU is a public university that offers private-school small class sizes. It is mainly a commuter school, but there are several hundred students who live on campus. It is the perfect school for the recent high school graduate as well as the middle-aged person who wants to come back to school.

    Bang for the buck

The price has increased drastically in the past decade while, arguably, the quality of the university's programs have not.

    What to do for fun

There are often concerts, cultural events, theater productions, and art exhibits on campus, but the real fun is in Cincinnati. The city has sports (Reds, Bengals, and minor league basketball and hockey teams), museums, multiple music and art venues, and just about any other sort of entertainment opportunities one could expect to find in a mid-major city. The important thing is to know what you like and to find where you can do it.

    Food and Dining

The on-campus dining options are fair but, to be honest, there are several great restaurants within a five-minute drive. There is also a bus system that you can take to surrounding cities, including Cincinnati, so if you do live on campus you really never have to eat there if you don't want to.

    Dorm Life

I have never lived in the dorms but, then again, as this is a commuter school very few students ever do.

    Academic Rigor

In light of my previous statement, the requirements for many programs are actually not that rigorous compared to other schools in the area.

    Tips for prospective students

Come in knowing what you want to do. In many programs it is difficult to complete a degree in four years if you haven't worked on it for four years, as some majors require classes which may only be offered once every two years and have pre-reqs that must be taken first.

    In three sentences

This is a definite commuter school: more than half of the students live off-campus. While campus life is not exactly thriving, several of the school's programs are top-quality (including psychology, communications, anthropology, and the wide array of programs within informatics). Perhaps the greatest boon to attending NKU is the focus on technology on campus, particularly technology-aided learning.

Honestly, I feel like NKU could have a little more for students to do considering how much tuition is.

    What to do for fun

    Dorm Life

I love dorm life! It is so much fun to have all your friends around. It is also very convienient to be so close to the library.

    Academic Rigor

    Academic Rigor

Use your resources. NKU has a free tutoring service available whenever and however you need them. They are very helpful and really know the material in order to help you be successful in your classes.

    Tips for prospective students

A tip for a prospective student is don't rush to declare your major. I suggest while you take your general education classes, try and take a variety of classes that might potentially interest you into going deeper into your field.

    In three sentences

Northern Kentucky's small classes are very productive and allow the students to engage and receive feedback from the professors in and outside of the classroom in a timely manner. At Northern Kentucky they strive to make you more than just a number, at NKU you are a person, they know you by name and many professors care enough to follow-up with you on day when you are not present to class. You connect with the residential community through the activities put on by the RA's. Plus it is much more convenient to just be right there, made me more motivated to go to class all the time.

    Dorm Life

I have spent several nights in the dorms and they are the best way to get the most social life possible. The Residential Assistants are very nice and helpful and there is always someone to talk to at the dorms. Plus the University Suites are very luxurious

    Academic Rigor

I would definitely say NKU is appropriately challenging. The science and music programs are especially difficult, but the properly motivated student has no problems.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved early. Many students carry their friends over from High School and do not become as social as possible.

Northern Kentucky University used to be just the place to go when you had no options. NKU is definitely a great school with an impressively low class room size and tuition cost.

They don't intimidate you though or make you feel like you are in prison, but it just makes you feel safe and secure. If you need to give them a call, text, or shoot them an email they always are very quick to arriving or responding.

    Greek Life

There is a very extensive Greek life at NKU and there are always more fraternities and sororities every year.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many clubs and activities to pick from that you will probably hear about a new one every other week that you are there.

Great for these types of students

Northern Kentucky University is great for every kind of student in my opinion.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I don't personally know of any that might be considered unusual.

    Bang for the buck

When it comes to food or clothing, things are a little more expensive than any poor college student would prefer, but that's at any university you are going to attend. The price of tuition though is an excellent price compared to the awesome education you'll be getting from Northern Kentucky University's professors and doctors.

    What to do for fun

Whether people are shy or outgoing, obese or fit, athletic or clumsy NKU offers so many different activities for students to engage in! There's a game room in the Student Union, gyms to work out in around every corner, a library that has five floors full of computers to use and books to read and sand volleyball courts that always have a game going. It is such a blast! In addition, there's movie nights and game nights in the digitorum, an outrageous number of clubs and organizations to join, and a good number of intramural sports teams to join. There's never a boring moment at NKU if you get yourself involved enough.

    Food and Dining

The food is not the best around. Some days it is absolutely amazing and tasty, but other days it definitely leaves something to be desired. For example, the biscuits and gravy from Callahan Hall were even better than my mom makes them most days! However, the pasta and spaghetti dishes were always flat and tasted old. There are so many options to pick from though that you never feel wanting for anything! Whatever food you may be craving, you are sure to find it somewhere and I love that about Northern Kentucky University!

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is always a fun step into a new world. With the independence, new faces, and your own space you feel like the possibilities are endless and the options are not always healthy ones. However, NKU keeps every one safe, quiet, and no one is above the law. The resident advisers NKU selects are among the best and the brightest and earn the respect they receive.

    Academic Rigor

Although NKU is a very socially accepting school, the professors will make you work for every grade that you get. Keep in mind that they will always be willing to answer your questions and give you one-on-one time outside of the classroom, but you have to ask them in order to receive and you must work with their schedule. Be sure you read ahead in your textbooks if the professor's syllabus suggests to do so and take detailed and careful notes every step of the way!

    Tips for prospective students

Don't take on more than you can handle in your first semester out of high school, but take as many hours as you can easily handle while still becoming acclimated to the new school, new buildings, and new faces. When you get a copy of your schedule I would highly suggest walking through what classes will be held where to get a good feel of the pace you'll need to move at. Do not buy your textbooks for full price if you can help it and check out what professors you'll be taking at ratemyprofessor.com.

    In three sentences

Northern Kentucky University has become a home away from home for me and I don't even stay on campus! Everyone is just so friendly and nice while professors are so willing to help their students. Food and Dining

The Student Union has a great variety of choices and the commons dinning hall always has something that you will enjoy

    Dorm Life

Great for these types of students

On campus, there are clubs you can join, the student union regularly hosts events such as talent shows and there are also plays going on most of the year.

    Food and Dining

The food in the cafeteria is pretty run-of-the-mill school food. But in the student union we have a Starbucks, Olo Sushi, and Papa John's, along with a chicken place, a pasta place, and mini quickie mart with delicious soups, and also a fresh salad cafe. There are many options, I believe anyone could find at least one thing they like.

    Dorm Life

I don't live in the dorms, but I have a few friends who do and they all seem to like it just fine. The dorms have many talented RA's who keep things up and running.

    Academic Rigor

    Tips for prospective students

The campus is full of networking opportunities be sure to use those and remember who they are they will be usefull to you when you graduate. Get involved on campus it will make your college career much more enjoyable.

    In three sentences

NKU is a very small college in which makes things nice because you have smaller classes and more one on one attention from the professor. The downfall to this campus is that it is a commuter college so you do not get that college experience with friends that you may have started with. They have lots of opportunities for greek life and sports but do not have a football team which I think hinders the school pride.

For Freshman students I advice to choose the Unlimited meal plan, so that way you can see how the meal program operates. They have 3 different cafeterias to eat at. Two are for each set of dorms. Campus Safety

NKU is extremely safe. I don't think there has ever been anything more than a fender-bender on campus. Campus police are seen around very often and at events and the campus has emergency call boxes placed around in case someone did need to use one in an emergency. The campus is very well-lit and if you feel scared walking back to your car or dorm at night then you can call the campus police and an officer will come walk you to your destination! The officers are also all very nice and make an effort to make the students, faculty and staff feel safe.

    Greek Life

We have a very strong Greek life on campus. Not everyone joins, of course, but it is talked about a lot on campus. You'll pretty much know someone from each sorority and fraternity on campus by the end of the year, whether you're in one or not.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so may clubs, I cant even begin to talk about them all! There are a bunch of campus activities planned all during the school year! We have an activities programming board run by students that makes sure the year is packed with fun!

Great for these types of students

Students who have lots of school spirit or Students who like a smaller campus or Students who enjoy getting involved on-campus or in-class or Students who want a great, affordable education or Anyone else! NKU appeals to a lot of people.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Nothing really unusual. We do have a small lake called Loch Norse though. It's quite pretty and always has ducks and Koi fish swimming around.

    Bang for the buck

Very affordable for in-state students. Compared to other colleges, I believe that NKU provides a great education as well as wonderful facilities for its students.

    What to do for fun

Join an organization!! There are so many groups on campus and if you look high and low then you're bound to find the one that's perfect for you! Organizations are a great way to meet people on campus and it gives you something fun to do! Also, go to sports events and support your fellow Norse! There are always Students dressed up to cheer on their NKU teams!

    Food and Dining

Every campus has its ups and downs. The Student Union has a lot of great options, but Norse Commons and the cafeteria in the Callahan dorm (those two are used mainly for dinners, but also breakfast and lunch) aren't the best places to eat. They're tolerable, but I've had better food.

    Dorm Life

There are 6 dorm options to pick from, and each has its own personality. Woodcrest is more apartment-type, and each room either has a full kitchen kitchenette. University Suites is the newest, and doesn't have a kitchen area, but each room is provided with cabinets and a sink in the common area. Callahan is technically off-campus, but there is a bus that runs to and from there. It is also within easy walking distance. I've noticed the rooms tend to be bigger as well. It's older, and is actually an old nursing home turned into a dorm building. Each year they have a dun Haunted House during Halloween! Norse Hall is similar to Woodcrest, but usually does not have a full kitchen. Kentucky and Commonwealth halls are more typical dorm-y. Both have communal bathrooms and a roommate. They are the least expensive but still good dorms. Woodcrest and Norse Hall are the only two dorms that do not have vending machines and laundry facilities due to the fact that they are more apartment-style. However, Norse Commons has those facilities, including a small exercise room, and it is located right there with the dorms.

    Academic Rigor

The professors at NKU really care about your academics and want each of their students to excel to the best of their ability. It isn't a hardcore school, and for me at least the homework amount hasn't been bad at all. But the school really does its best to provide you with all of the resources needed to succeed academically.

    Tips for prospective students

Check RateMyProfessor.com when you're signing up for classes. NKU has an AMAZING amount of skilled professors, but I've found that ratemyprofessor.com has been quite accurate in describing my professors each semester. It really helps weed out the professors who may not fit your learning style or personality type.

    In three sentences

Northern Kentucky University is a place where Dreamers truly are welcome. Every student is treated fairly here and the campus spirit is insanely high. If you want a place that makes you feel equal and at home, become a NKU Norse!

NKU is building up their sports programs and that is bringing a lot to the school. More excitement and more school spirit is building behind these soon to be championship teams. Going to these games is what it is all about; cheering for your school and being proud to be a Norseman.

    Food and Dining

When it comes to food on campus I think they have a lot of options for the students to choose from. The Common food buffet for the on campus students is a bit subpar. The food that they make does taste very good but there is a lack of variety from week to week menus.

    Dorm Life

I think that the dorm life is somewhat dull. A majority of NKU's students are commuters and so the dorm life is not necessarily a point of focus for NKU at the moment. The dorms at NKU are nice but they lack some of the activities and functions that most bigger colleges use.

    Academic Rigor

I believe that NKU has many challenging programs and they make you work hard to achieve greatness in and outside of the classroom.

Northern Kentucky is a great value. It is cheaper than a lot of other schools and has just as much to offer.

    What to do for fun

There are a lot of clubs and organizations to stay involved on campus. You can find activities today be in based upon your major, your interests, and your beliefs.

    Food and Dining

The food and dining is excellent here! There are various options, and a lot of healthy foods available.

    Dorm Life

I did not live in a dorm. I commented. However, I have been told living in the dorms is fun, and exciting.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are very challenging, however, there are a lot of opportunities to help students if they need it.

    Tips for prospective students

1.) Pay Attention and participate in class. 2.) Do not procrastinate. 3.) Look over your notes on a daily basis to stay refreshed.

    In three sentences

After my father was murdered I was extremely scared and nervous to begin college. I love Northern Kentucky University, because the class sizes are small and the professors are friendly. I would highly recommend Northern Kentucky University!

    Campus Safety

Campus police are friendly and ever present. NKU is also away from any crime prone neighborhoods. There are usually one to maybe two reported crimes on campus per year. Last year, someone held a lighter up to a ceiling pannel in an elevator, effectively burning a 1/2 diameter hole in it. The year before that, someone was described as urinating in a parking lot. I started in 2011, and those are the only campus crime alerts that have been issued between then and now.

    Clubs and Activities

I am a member of Norse Baja, and it is my favorite activity out of any I've ever done, and my favorite club out of any I've been involved in.

Great for these types of students

Engineering technologies Music Visual Arts Law Psychology

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Roundabouts. NKU has two of the very few roundabouts in the commonwealth of Kentucky.

    Bang for the buck

Maybe I'm biased because I have to pay for all of it, but it is annoying to pay for a class and have the professor do no work because everything is online instead of on paper.

    What to do for fun

The rec center is okay. There are many on-campus organizations to choose from, so you can always find something to do.

    Food and Dining

Usually good food. Sometimes hit and miss, and definitely overpriced.

    Academic Rigor

100 level classes are like 400 level classes, and 400 level classes are like 100 level classes. What I mean is, classes that should be easy are incredibly difficult, and classes that should be difficult are easy.

    Tips for prospective students

Stay away from classes that have in-class lectures and online homeworks and tests. Especially those that involve math. I find this to be an impersonal and ineffective method of teaching. Otherwise, it's a good academic environment with great people.

    In three sentences

There is a vast sense of family within classes, but a vast sense of isolation outside the classroom. Many professors use online learning tools, including online tests, which I disapprove of. Classes are usually well structured and are effective.

    Campus Safety

I feel very safe at NKU. There are different call stations that are lit up with a blue light. It calls directly to campus police. The police station isn't even a mile away from the nearest building and they are constantly patrolling the campus. At night, in the parking garages is what I worry about if anything. Even there, there are calling stations and I usually see a police officer in a near distance.

    Greek Life

I haven't heard much about greek life around NKU. I know that it is a bigger part of the dorm students.

    Clubs and Activities

I feel like the clubs at NKU are very involved and hard to be a part of one because of the work load that I have. They have many activities that I have been a part of within my area of study and they are so much fun. It usually is led by a professor or student leader and they usually are very organized. The best thing about them is they usually count for extra credit so I highly recommend them!

Great for these types of students

NKU is great for students who are willing to learn and study. Also, students who are willing to make new friends and be personable to anyone around. Don't be afraid to ask the professors questions or visit them in office hours about any questions that you have.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I am unaware of any unusual traditions but locations on campus might be helpful for new students. The library might not seem unusual but if you go up and down the floors in the library there are many more computer labs that you would never even guess were even there! It's a nice trick to know because they are secluded and quiet. Also, in different buildings there is usually a computer lab to print or check emails. So, before you start classes, look around!

    Bang for the buck

NKU's tuition is rising but it is still worth it to me! I am a student who is looking for more personal friendships in my area of study and there are definitely students that are looking for the same. I feel like my professors are very knowledgeable and I like that they came from my area of expertise. Professors are also very flexible with office hours and friendly. You definitely are getting a good education as well as a good experience with schooling.

    What to do for fun

For fun, I like to visit the Rec center on campus. They have many machines to work out on, a basketball gym, a track, Zumba classes, etc... Also, something interesting about NKU is they have a quittage team (From Harry Potter), and anyone can join this team. I think the fun on campus is just more of a way to escape from everyday studying.

    Food and Dining

NKU's Student Union is very convenient and right in the middle of campus. It has anything you can think of. They have coffee, a little convenient store, sandwiches, sushi, and pizza. I also find that the Student Union has many places where it is quiet and you can escape to study. It seems to be a popular place to hang out when students are on campus. I don't stay on campus longer than I need to just because of other duties in my life but when I have a chance, I stop there to get a snack.

    Dorm Life

As a commuting student, I am not 100 percent sure how the dorm life is. I know, and see everywhere all of the activities that are prepared for all of the dorm students. Of course, by word of mouth I have heard that the dorms are fun to live in and the rules are followed very closely by the RA's.

    Academic Rigor

The academic rigor at NKU is fitting for my level of study. For any student, I highly suggest you study as many hours as the course level is. Therefore if a course is 4 credit hours, you study 4 hours a week. If you don't know your stuff at NKU though, they will let that be known. I am in the education program and before you get credit for something, they will make for sure that you know your stuff. The professors are VERY good at giving a syllabi at the beginning of the semester and I also suggest you follow that to a tee. It's hard work but with organization skills, your semesters will fly by.

    Tips for prospective students

Students wanting to enroll at NKU, I highly recommend it! I transferred to NKU from a small private school and the changes that I made were life changing. For a new student, I would at least explore the campus before stepping inside of a classroom. It seems like a big campus at first, but once you get to know your way around, it's pretty simple. Also, study, study, study. Some of the course load, once you get into your content courses is heavy but it is well worth it! The professors are very knowledgeable and experienced and will help you in office hours. Every professor I have come by, with office hours, is willing to help and very kind about you visiting them.

    In three sentences

Northern Kentucky University is a great school as I have found out the past few years. It is right outside of my home city of Cincinnati, therefore commuting is very convenient. NKU is a great place to explore what the rest of your life is going to consist of and I have had the opportunity to meet a lot of new people!

    Dorm Life

I have not lived in a dorm, but those who have seem to enjoy it.

    Academic Rigor

Some classes can be hard, but who doesn't want to be challenged? Overall I think there is a good balance and any class can be passed if you work at it and study.

    Tips for prospective students

This is a great college that is not overwhelming but is still not too small. There is plenty to get involved in, and it's not out of reach.

    In three sentences

The classes at NKU are not too big most of the time. The campus is great and easy to find your way around. The pofessors are very helpful and want you to succeed.

There are a lot of activities, just not a lot that happen to interest me. We need more dance activities (ballroom, latin ballroom, etc).

    Food and Dining

Could have more choices and be open later like larger universities. Overall though, the selection is good.

    Dorm Life

Not an expert on this as I live off campus, however, a lot of my classmates live on campus and really enjoy the facilities, activities and convenience.

    Academic Rigor

Not the most intellectually challenging institution, but more than adequate for the courses of study available.

    Tips for prospective students

Be sure to save up for your insurance, books and parking passes. You cannot have these expenses deducted from your aid package.

    In three sentences

Great educational value in comparison to the cost of attendance. The campus is safe and well-lit and has a variety of activities available. I only wish that they had more organizations that met later in the day or were geared towards dance.

    What to do for fun

I think for fun, the best thing to do is getting involved on campus. Even as a commuter student, I've made attempts to participate in campus events to get the true college experience. One thing I definitely recommend is attending some of the theatre performances put on at the Corbett Theatre. Northern has very talented theatre students. I only took two theatre courses as an elective and a general ed fulfillment and got aquainted with the program. I've attended 1-2 performances a year, both plays and musicals, and have always been thorougly impressed.

    Food and Dining

I've had one experience with the Norse Commons Dining Hall. It wasn't my favorite. However, the Student Union offers many options for dining and new places are being added every year. The SU offers Starbucks, Papa Johns, chinese, chicken, sushi...just about everything. I really enjoy Coyote Jacks. Great food at a good price.

    Dorm Life

As a commuter student, the only experience I had with dorm life was during my stay in University Suites during my two day orientation. However, I was impressed with the facilities and have visited friends who live on campus in the standard residence halls and also liked what I saw there. Everything seems very clean and up-to-date.

    Academic Rigor

NKU overall likes to enforce attendance policies. Professors have their own attendance policy, at their discretion. Yet the university really tries to enforce attendance on most professors. Most colleges my friends have gone to in the area don't enforce attendance policies so I feel that NKU is different in this aspect. Attendance, in some events, can make or break your grade.

    Tips for prospective students

I would suggest picking a major as soon as you can and sticking to your academic plan for that major. Switching majors, or even minors, can really set you back here. Meet with your advisor often to make sure the catalogs for your major haven't had extremely significant requirement changes. If you're a commuter student, get to class early to make sure you have adequate time to find a parking space close to all of your classes.

    In three sentences

A very accessible, modern campus. It has it's own appeal and is growing more and more by the year. A great place to be if you want the college experience without paying top dollar.

    In three sentences

I would describe this college in one word which is:welcoming! Many students who attend a school are concerned about the feeling of being at home. At Northern Kentucky University you won't second guess this feeling because it gives off a vibe of being your home away from home.

    Tips for prospective students

    In three sentences

Definitely a good school in regards to academics. But the quality of life here is terrible. NKU is a commuters institution that isn't friendly to independent outsiders. Everyone on campus has known each other from high school and are not accepting to strangers. Sure you make some friends, but it all turns out to be like high school again; the drama and lots of immaturity. I could go on about how this place disgusts me. Clubs and Activities

There are so many clubs and organizations. There are groups for religions, views, majors, everything you can think of.

    What to do for fun

I have had so much fun living on campus. My roommates, some friends, and I go out sometimes to sporting events, campus events, or to the many surrounding restaurants around campus. NKU holds an event that is for everyone.

    Food and Dining

Starbucks is great for coffee after studying all night. Food wise, I usually get lunch in the Student Union which is great with plenty of options. The only downside is that if you go around standard lunch time (noon), the lines are pretty long. For dinner, I eat at Norse Commons. It is all you can eat, and their food is good. I just feel like I eat the same things over again there. Both are covered by my meal plance.

Complete your FAFSA as soon as January 1st, and be patient with the financial aide office. Other than that, schedule your classes to how you feel that you could handle them best, relax, and enjoy college life.

    In three sentences

I love NKU because the relationships are so close, there's always help when you need it. It's not a very big campus which is great if you need smaller class sizes. NKU also hold plenty of events which are fun to go to.

    Greek Life

I'm a Greek so I think it is pretty awesome. We all get a long pretty well and there are a lot of us. Everybody tries to be really supportive of the different chapters.

    Clubs and Activities

there are over 200 organizations on campus so there is something for everybody and if there isn't then you can start your own. We have everything from a foam sword fighting club to Greek life.

Great for these types of students

We have all different kinds of students but most of us are commuters.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I don't think we really have any unusual traditions. We do have a nearly naked mile run every year to kick off homecoming week but other schools do the same thing. I guess an unusual location is that we have this underground tunnel system that links all of the buildings on campus.

    What to do for fun

Cincinnati is like 5 miles away so you have all kinds of stuff going on you just have to leave campus for it.

    Food and Dining

The food has gotten a lot better since I started at NKU 3 and a half years ago.

    Dorm Life

Our dorms are really nice compared to other colleges. There are a bunch of different options to choose from.

Most of the crime that occurs is petty larceny and petty theft that occurs from somebody leaving a textbook behind or leaving a car door unlocked.

    Greek Life

I am not in Greek Life.

    Clubs and Activities

There is really a student organization for everyone on campus.

Great for these types of students

NKU is great for both traditional and nontraditional students, as well as veterans. The university has a PACE program, which allows for nontraditional students to have limited classroom time, and much of the work online.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Griffin Hall houses the College of Informatics. The building opened in the Fall of 2011, and is a building that fits modern stylings. The whiteboards in the classrooms are an entire wall, with special paint to allow them to be used in that sense. Also, there is a digitorium, which is a room that allows for interactive events to occur on campus. For example, the screen is the size of the wall, and can be split into many different inputs. Also, it allows for technology to be utilized when there are events in which students can interactively vote anonymously, through the usage of a special device.

    Bang for the buck

The cost is worth it. Much of the tuition will actually go to the college within NKU that the student is enrolled in, as well as some of that money going to the department that the student's program is in.

    What to do for fun

There are various campus events, especially towards the beginning and the end of the semester. The campus offers many professional workshops, as well as just fun activities in the game room, dorms, and Student Union.

    Food and Dining

The Village Cafe has terrible food. The food in the Callahan Bistro is excellent, as well as the food in the Student Union.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life creates a sense of a small community, although, NKU has a mostly commuter student body. There are living communities in some of the dorms, such as Greek life, STEM program, leadership, and honors. The small community sense is strengthened with many of the students willing to help each other out in various ways, whether it be homework help or just helping carry in groceries.

    Academic Rigor

The classes at NKU can be very challenging or very easy. It all will depend on the instructor that is teaching the class and the student's learning style.

    Tips for prospective students

Northern Kentucky University has many resources available to not only help with the application process, but long after a decision to attend NKU is made. Financial aid can be a pain to deal with, but much of it falls upon the government. NKU is a great fit for those who want to go to a four-year school that feels like a small-town community college. The large campus and student body size actually feels quite small and community oriented, allowing for a strong sense of belonging to the NKU community.

    In three sentences

Very visible and influential on campus. It's a good place for you if you're looking to be in a sorority or fraternity. Otherwise, your options are kind of limited.

    Clubs and Activities

Greek life is a little too prominent on campus

Great for these types of students

Commuter students; those looking to go to class then go home

    What to do for fun

Join an organization in order to keep yourself busy. There's not a lot to do directly on campus but Newport on the Levee and downtown Cincinnati are both close. Greek life is huge on campus.

    Food and Dining

Their food is pretty good. The food in the Student Union is great- they have a papa johns, a chicken/burger joint and a sub place similar to Subway.

    Dorm Life

I had to live on campus because I was too far away from home to commute. Honestly, living on campus at NKU is nothing like at other universities. Because NKU is a commuter school, it's very difficult to meet people by living on campus and there's often nothing to do. On the weekends, campus becomes a ghost town. It gets really lonely for people who live on campus unless you came there with a lot of friends.

    Academic Rigor

I was at NKU for one semester and my classes were moderately challenging. Nothing too overwhelming but you will learn a lot if you put time in.

    Tips for prospective students

Avoid living on campus unless you absolutely have to & get involved early

    In three sentences

NKU is a good school if you're looking to commute. NKU has small class sizes and professors who care. NKU is dull as far as the typical college experience is concerned and is often boring and makes you feel closed in when on campus.

    What to do for fun

There are many events offered by different associations at school such as sororities, fraternities, board of activities, etc. There is a game room in the Student Union that has video games, pool tables, tv's, etc.

    Food and Dining

There are very few options of food at NKU. There are some restaurants at the Student Union but everything closes at 3 pm except for Starbucks. There are also a couple of small coffee shops on some of the buildings but these don't have a lot to choose from and they close at 6 pm. Nonetheless, there are some restaurants off-campus such as Chipotle, Big Boy, Burger King, etc.

    Dorm Life

There aren't a lot of options for living at the dorms, also living there is very expensive. The dorms are normally not the most appropriate place to focus and study.

    Academic Rigor

The Biological Sciences program requires time studying and preparing. There are normally 4 exams and they are cumulative along with homework and classwork. In my area of concentration, Genetics/ Cellular/ Molecular Biology there are very rigorous classes that are challenging and require lots of reading and reviewing the material.

    Campus Safety

There are plenty of lights and emergency call boxes around campus and the dorms. It's a small enough campus, too, so there's no need to feel lost or insecure. I've walked back alone plenty of nights and have never felt nervous or afraid.

    Greek Life

Greek life is huge here. Everywhere you turn there is something advertising it, or some Greek event going on. For those completely against Greek life, this could possibly be a turn-off.

    Clubs and Activities

There are tons of clubs that you could join. There's a club or activity for just about everyone.

Great for these types of students

This is a great campus for low-key, small town students, especially those looking for a small taste of a bigger city. The campus is also great for those looking to explore their artsy side.

    Bang for the buck

Things are a little pricy all around. Dining on campus is expensive, and so are the items in the small on-campus stores. As far as tuition, it seems to be worth it, but you would expect there to be better wifi for the money paid.

    What to do for fun

There isn't much in this area without traveling to Cincinnati or Newport, but there are still things to do. They're of the more relaxing variety, such as movies or dining out, or even bowling, but they're still fun.

    Food and Dining

Some of the food is great, but it's nothing to write home about. They are constantly making adjustments and improvements, but it's still rather average.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are rather expensive for what they are. The cheapest selection can cost you more than sharing an apartment. And I've seen the occasional bug or two....not great...

    Academic Rigor

As for English Education, the courses are taxing but certainly not impossible. The teachers know what they're talking about, and are great resources for learning.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be afraid to ask advisers and professors questions when you're stuck; it's what they're there for. Don't be afraid to get involved either--it can really make the difference. Other than that, just enjoy your college years, take studies seriously, but also have some serious fun!

    In three sentences

NKU is the perfect school, in my opinion. Not too big and not too small, and with plenty of opportunities for everyone. There is very little that I would want to change about Northern Kentucky University.

    Campus Safety

You hardly ever hear of a break-in or robbery, and there are security blue light buttons just about everywhere. Even if it's just getting a walk back to your car, the police will come and escort you no problem.

Great for these types of students

If you're geeky, a gamer, or you're not sure where to go just go to the game room. We're all really friendly and just want to have fun and hang out. You don't need to bring money or gaming equipment.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Not really a tradition or location, but most of the drivers are really nice here! Very polite in letting people make turns out of busy parking lots (even during rush times), not too many people going too fast at all.

    What to do for fun

The game room is my number one go-to place to hang out and relax. All my friends are there, and we all like to hang around, tell jokes and even study together on occasion. But mostly games, of course.

    Food and Dining

Staff is friendly and the food is pretty good! There's a variety of foods to choose from, including many healthy choices, vegetarian options, and more home-cooked type meals, instead of just all fast food. Not too expensive on the wallet either, if you don't have a meal plan.

    Dorm Life

I am not living in the dorms, but most reports from my friends say that it is rather nice. It adds to the college lifestyle and it's easier to make friends and hang around with them. That being said, I commute from home (35-40 minute trip there, depending on traffic) and it doesn't hinder my experience too much.

    Academic Rigor

Freshmen year will be difficult (depending on how much effort you put in) which is to be expected. It may seem overwhelming at first, but don't be afraid to reach out to other students and/or staff to help you.

    Tips for prospective students

Know who your adviser is, and where they are! Getting to know them earlier on in the semester makes it an easier process later to make meetings for class scheduling, asking general questions and so on. Advisers are great sources of information for you!

    In three sentences
