Great for these types of students

Oakwood is great for individuals who are looking to grow closer to Christ. He is definitely blessing this university.

    Tips for prospective students

If you didn't have to work hard or study in high school, all of that changes in college. Come in with a bang. If you don't do well your freshman year, you are going to have to spend the following three years pulling your GPA up. That will not be fun.

    Bang for the buck

Every school has room for improvement. Oakwood definitely has its imperfections. I know that it is worth every penny because students would not jump through hoops to come back to school if it wasn't. At Oakwood, you don't just get an education that will get you a job. You are being taught how to live in accordance with God's word. You cannot put a price on your own salvation. In teaching you how to live according to God's words, they are helping you to teach others so His love and His words can continue to be spread.

    Am enjoying being here

At first, I did not want to go to Oakwood. That seems to be a lot of students' stories; however, I ended up there and I am loving every minute of it. I have only been at Oakwood for one year, and I can already say it is the best school anyone could attend. It is so amazing to be around so many young individuals who have so much in common with you from the very beginning. Everyone hears that you will meet lifelong friends in college, but no one can imagine not being friends with their high school friends forever so that lifelong friend quote doesn't really phase them. It was not until I came to Oakwood and started making new friends that I began to understand how the people I was meeting could be lifelong friends. God blessed me with a lot of individuals who have the same goals that I do and the work ethic to get there. If you put Him first, He will make sure that you are surrounded by positive individuals. During my first year of college, I grew close to five different girls that I know will be in my life forever. In just one year, we have already gone through so much. We have watched each other grow as people and in Christ. We know that it is not going to stop at one year. People say that there will be no year like your freshman year and, while that may be true, I know that these next years are going to be even better than my freshman year. I would not trade anything in the world for the Oakwood Experience. I cannot wait to continue my college years.

    Am learning a lot

The faculty at Oakwood is wonderful. The teachers don't only teach the information in the textbook, but they also teach from the Bible. This is great because, in the end, the only wisdom that will truly count is what we learn from the Bible and apply to our lives. It doesn't matter what subject they're teaching. They all find some way to tie it into the Bible. I came from public school, so I was not used to this kind of teaching structure because it is not allowed. All of my teachers started class off with a devotional thought and/or prayer. I know that set the tone of how the class went. These teachers are truly a blessing because they are teaching us information that you cannot put a price on.

    Did enjoy being here

I really enjoyed being at Oakwood. When I first attended, I didn't appreciate it until I saw what the school was like. Now, that I'm officially gone, I realize how much I miss the school. The spiritual aspect is a plus! However, there were a couple issues here and there but nothing that one can't overcome and besides every school has his or her own issues. If I had the option again, I would go to Oakwood!

    Did learn a lot

I learned a lot while attending Oakwood, both inside and outside of class. The school brings in wonderful speakers to talk to the students at different times. The motto, Enter to Learn Depart to Serve is definitely a phrase that Oakwood University stands true to.

On campus, there is a good amount of things to do. You realize that when you and your buddies don't have that much money, pretty much just being together is enough to have fun. Usually with my friends, we'll hang in the library and socialize, play spades, go to the on-campus skating rink, enjoy poetry monthly on-campus via Art-n-Soul, and there are things to do off campus, like go bowling, or go to the movies, or just hang out at your friend's house.

    Tips for prospective students

New and transfer students attending Oakwood this fall, I highly recommend that you all actually take the time to study for your classes. During my first semester I found myself distracted, thus causing me to procrastinate a lot. Although my grades never dropped below a C, I knew that I could do a whole lot better than what I was doing. My second semester I took much more time with my studying and managed to get my GPA up. And besides, there could be nothing worst than spending YOUR summer retaking classes you slacked in, not to mention the money it will cost your parents!

    Bang for the buck

Oakwood is moderately priced compared to many other private colleges out there. One of the improvements I would suggest is better housing.

    Am enjoying being here

Oakwood is a Christian university and is very Christ-centered. I actually love going to the weekly worships because there are often very great speakers there. Then there's the work load. What can I say, its college. There are some days that I want to be there, some days I do not. I just try to continue to make the best of it.

    Am learning a lot

The most of teachers here are great. Although it can be quite difficult to understand them, because of the accents, they do know what they are talking about. Some will even help you out a lot when you assignments are late!

Although, The cafeteria food doesn't appeal to most of the student body, they do serve all vegetarian meals and they also have food for the vegans.

    Dorm Life

For those that kept their gpa's up in highschool, they have an opportunity to stay in the honors wing. It is first come first serve among those who fit the criteria so don't waste time applying for the honors wing. Describing the physical condition of Carter Hall is pointless because they are renovating the dorm this summer. So the class of 2013 will be in a new building. However, the RA's and Deans are very nice. They are very reasonable and fair when it comes to issues.

    Academic Rigor

The academics are great. They are challenging and very helpful.

    Tips for prospective students

It is best to keep up with your papers (transcripts, ect) especially if you're thinking about transferring.

    In three sentences

This school is great especially for Music Majors and Business Majors (that's me). It is a great place to get a degree and build connections. Oakwood can appeal to whatever you're looking for.

    Campus Safety

Public safety has done a great job at keeping the campus safe and things in order. With their 24/7 patrol on a nightly basis, things are flowing smooth.

    Greek Life

There are no fraternities and sororities.

    Clubs and Activities

Oakwood has plenty of clubs and activities. There is basketball, choir, band, etc. These clubs and activities give students the chance to come together and make the experience at Oakwood even better.

Great for these types of students

Oakwood University is great for Christ-centered students who are willing to excel academically and spiritually.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Teachers take the time to take prayer request from students and pray for the students in the classroom.

    Bang for the buck

Even though Oakwood isn't the cheapest, it is totally worth it. Oakwood University is a place where students get a quality education and an enjoyable experience.

    What to do for fun

On campus, you can go to basketball games, the skating rink, and block parties for fun. Also, you can go to your respected dorms where they will host game nights.

    Food and Dining

Food at the cafeteria is inconsistent in terms of satisfaction. There are some days when the food is good and some days not so good. But, there is a market on campus that serves great vegetarian food.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is decent. However, response time for repairs in a dorm room needs improvement. The deans are very respectful and are great individuals.

    Academic Rigor

Classes are quite challenging but it isn't an obstacle that you can't overcome. Teachers are willing to go the extra mile to help a student as long as the student wants to learn.

    Tips for prospective students

Take your classes very serious and don't procrastinate. Always keep in mind that there is a time for everything. Finally, make your college experience enjoyable.

    In three sentences

Oakwood University is a good school to further your education. The level of care for the students at Oakwood is absolutely phenomenal. Also, Oakwood prepares you for the coming of Jesus-Christ.

    Campus Safety

The campus is a very safe place to be. I never feel nervous or scared to walk alone on campus at night. This is probably not the safest thing to do but if I have to, it can be done. There are police men and the gates are locked and controlled my safety personnel. Oakwood is a safe environment.

    What to do for fun

On campus there is a skating rink, a gym, and a swimming pool that are all available to the students. Off campus there are also lots of things to do. Be creative and do something different and out of the ordinary!

    Food and Dining

The food in the Cafeteria doesn't taste horrible usually, but you know anything can get boring and tiring if you do it all the time. Same with Cafe food; it can get into a boring rut. Change is good that is why there is a Market, where you can buy snack foods and fast foods.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is whatever you make it to be. If you want to have a good year, be the good roommate. Don't be controversial and choose which battles to pick with your roommate. Pray before you actually move in. I have an amazing roommate and we get along and always ask before using the other person's stuff. This is a great habit to make. But facility wise, I think it's clean and neat. Carter Hall, (Freshmen Girl Dorm) is being redone and updated!

    Academic Rigor

How hard your classes and the class loads are depends on your major and the professors you have.

    Tips for prospective students

FILL OUT SCHOLARSHIPS! Don't come to Oakwood to play around and goof off. Have fun, yes! But study hard and make the best of your situation.

    In three sentences

Oakwood provides spiritually uplifting programs and chaplains that are always ready to pray with you and for you. When you attend Oakwood, there isa guarantee for creating lifetime friendships. Encouraging and understanding staff and teachers are very important to any college but especially to Oakwood where those types of individuals are in abundance..

    What to do for fun

There isn't really much to do outside of the campus. There are different activities to do around campus that are very enjoyable with friends.

    Food and Dining

The food in the cafeteria is really bad, however if you go to the market/snack bar the food is really good.

    Dorm Life

There dorms are nice enough, i live in Carter Hall and the Honors Wing is nice. I really like living there, its a lot of fun and it really helps you be responsible and independent.

    Academic Rigor

You are in charge of what you do with your grades, it is all your responsibility and you have to be on top of your work and your schedule or you won't do well.

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared to expect different things than what you were originally told. Some of the thing that are offered may be different that you think. However, if you follow the list of classes outlined for you, you should be fine. Don't get caught up in other things, have fun, but focus on schoolwork and your classes.

    In three sentences

A nice place where you are in an entirely African American environment. There are really great people here and when you make friends, school and classes become a lot more fun. Some classes are enjoyable, but some teachers can be extremely frustrating and you may not be aware of your class grades until midterms or the end of the semester.

    Greek Life

I've heard they have Mad Dogs hear, I haven't seen much sorority/fraternity life on campus.

    Clubs and Activities

STAND (I forgot what it stands for, lol) NAPS (the National Association for the Prevention of Starvation) Education Club OBMA (some biology, science, medical association) Most majors have some kind-of club in their department Mentor programs Intramurals

Great for these types of students

Biology and science majors Those seeking life-long friends Those seeking spiritual growth Students seeking to make a difference in the world around them YOU???? (Pray about it) ;)

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

We have curfew- the times have been modified, so I believe it's now 11:30pm. The library closes... it's not open 24/7. We serve vegetarian food!! Having a relationship with God is encouraged... you are strongly encouraged to go to a number of worship services each month. Life, and this school is like a rose bush, you can choose to see the thorns (as listed above) or you can smell the roses. The choice is yours.

    Bang for the buck

Oakwood used to have a spectacular group called the National Association for the Prevention of Starvation (NAPS) on campus, but it has been recently moved elsewhere. This group has helped me become the man I am today. I have grown so much as a person, and have had the privilege of traveling with them to over 13 different states and overseas. They help you live a life with purpose, and help you grow closer to the most important thing in this life- our relationship with God.

    What to do for fun

For fun you can: hang out with your friends, play basketball or football, go skating, go swimming, work-out, play in one of the dorm game rooms, or learn an instrument. Having a car is definitely a plus. If you or one of your friends have one, you can also go: bowling, downtown, paintballing, skating/ice skating, and out to eat. It's as fun as you make it. We have basketball games, intramural sports; mix all this with some optimistic people and the question becomes what do you WANT to do?.

    Food and Dining

I think the food has come a long way. It seems like no matter what school you go to, the residents have nothing positive to say about the food. I believe it's because they compare the unseasoned food they receive to home-cooking they grew up on. I believe Oakwood has come a long way as far as the variety and quality of their food selections; I know there's always room for improvement though. Sometimes you have to wait a while to get the best options, and can end up spending more time in the cafe then you wanted- because of that.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life is okay. They are becoming more lenient as far as their restrictions go, so that's a plus if you like staying out late. I don't spend too much time in my room, but the rooms can use some enhancements. However, if you have great roommates/suite mates you'll have a blast no matter what you do or don't have.

    Academic Rigor

They have a good biology and nursing program. The education program is okay, I would probably go somewhere else if I was focused on just academics-as far as this field goes. The business department is good, I'm not really too sure how the engineering curriculum is, I know it's a 3-2 year program though. The theology program is pretty good, I've been doing a lot of reading though, so I know the best way to receive pastoral training isn't by sitting in a classroom all day, but by going out into the deep. Some teachers are excellent, while others function at or below par. I'm going to give it 3 stars in honor of the excellent teachers that are speckled throughout the school. Just like we're the salt of the earth, they are the salt of the school.

    Tips for prospective students

Take time to volunteer and get involved in different organizations. Find your passion now, so you won't end up doing something you hate later on it life. Also, take time to make memories, for we only have one chance to make the most of the opportunities we're given. :)

    In three sentences

I think Oakwood University is a pretty good school. There isn't too much to do on campus, but they strive to make it a spiritual atmosphere. If you are searching for Christ, and meaningful relationships, you CAN find them here.

Since Oakwood is an Adventist university, there isn't a lot to do, but what my friends and I do for fun is just go skating at the skating rink, hit up IHOP, go to the club down the street or just do random stuff!

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you keep all documents that Oakwood sent you, because they will have you running back and forth just to get you enroll into school. Don't spend all your Market Points in one month because you're going to need them later in the semester.....believe me lol

    In three sentences

Oakwood is a great place! It has some flaws but overall it is a great school! Its a great place to learn and even a better place to get closer to God! And the music and talents the kids have is just amazing!

The campus does numerous activities for students, there's always something going on so you won't be bored.

    Food and Dining

If you're not a vegetarian you'll have a rough transition into the food that's served on campus. The myths about not being able to cook meat on campus is false, you'll be able to order as much as you please.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is fun, it helps you learn how to bond with people from different backgrounds. It's carefree environment, everyone bonds like a family.

    Academic Rigor

Academic wise study, study, study. Stay ahead of the teacher at all times, review. College is different from High School, it's a completely mind altering experience.

    In three sentences

Oakwood is a very good school. When it comes to spirituality and academics it beats all the schools out there. The only thing that I would want to change about this institution is the tuition. It is way too expensive for majority of the students attending.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is AMAZING! The security personnel truly care about each students' safety and well-being. They'll be there in a hurry, you don't have to worry!

    Clubs and Activities

Well..there are few clubs to join. Students that attend Oakwood have to GO out and find these clubs. That's the only way to do it, because if you miss the club mixer at the beginning of the year...you may never hear of that organization again.

Great for these types of students

Oakwood is great for students who don't want to be outside of their comfort zone. It's a very safe place for individuals afraid to mingle and meet new people.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Well, people always say you go to Oakwood to meet your husband/wife, but also beware of the Theology majors. The theology majors are actually nice people, and only naive individuals will fall for ANY bad guy. Relationships at Oakwood do tend to last a long time... from what I've seen, but just like any school they can end.

    What to do for fun

Going to the campus events that do occur is a great way to have fun. I loooove events, so it means a lot when my school throws a great block party, fashion show, etc. Also, just making great friends will create all kinds of fun, especially in the dorm. My friends and I played a game called Man War in the basement of Carter Hall on a day when the school was closed down due to inclement weather... anyhow, it was THE most fun I'd had in the dorm...EVER! There were so many secret passageways, rooms, and closets to hide in down there. Hmm...once again, having a car or friends with cars will also make life fun.

    Food and Dining

The food is ALL vegetarian which isn't TOO bad, especially if you're used to eating it; however, the cafeteria isn't such a great spot. There have been things found in the cafeteria (in food..and not), and that's the only reason why it isn't such a great spot. The market however is pretty cool.

    Dorm Life

I stayed in Carter Hall for my freshman year, which wasn't bad. It needs a lot of work, but luckily it's getting rebuilt this year and will be ready by Spring 2014.

    Academic Rigor

The academics are great here! I loved all of my professors-- taking time on creating the perfect schedule goes a long way!

    Tips for prospective students

Please make sure that you have a car! The city of Huntsville isn't as large as Atlanta or Chicago, but there is stuff to do; and so a car will be a great gateway to fun...especially since there's not much to do on campus.

    In three sentences

Oakwood is simply a larger Adventist high school academy. No one really has much pride in making the school more fun for its students (frequent on-campus events...), instead because it's a Seventh-Day Adventist school where academy friends are still friends from birth...most of its faculty and students consider it amazing.

I can't speak to this area as of yet, however I will say that their academic standing say that they are doing something right.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be afraid to ask for help, I haven't met a soul that has not been willing to take out time to help me through this process. Let God lead, it may not sound important but after my campus visit to other schools, even those that were religious affiliated, it speaks volumes to be somewhere where they love the Lord openly.

    In three sentences

This is a God-Centered school who appears to care about their students. It is comforting to know that in this world there are still those that truly care about your success. Oakwood has proven just by the enrollment process that they are invested in my success.

Our campus safety is a police force on campus, and they carry guns. Fortunately for all students they are very patience.

    Greek Life

    There is none.

    Clubs and Activities

The clubs and activities are up to you. There are great things going on around campus, but if you want things to be better make it better. You can join any clubs or student activities and contribute to better than club or activity.

Great for these types of students

Oakwood University is great for Black Adventist students, but everyone is welcome.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

    No not really.

    Bang for the buck

Oakwood University is the best place for Adventist higher education.

    What to do for fun

The student government provides the student activities. You can help put on and plan different activities or you could participate in different activities. No fraternity or sorority. There are plenty of clubs to get active with.

    Food and Dining

I don't know the school is in the process of changing their food provider.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is great. The only down side of that there is curfew.

    Academic Rigor

The work isn't impossible, but it is open to you to really understand what your tested on. The teachers will provide as much help as you need, but you have to want it.

    Tips for prospective students

If your not a vegetarian the school serves vegetarian cuisine. The more active you are the more fun you will have. Huntsville, the city Oakwood is in is a college town. There are two other college very close.

    What to do for fun

On campus, things are pretty underground. There's different activities on different nights, usually Bible studies. In the surrounding city (town?), there's malls, movie theatres, and stores. A car is needed for nearly half that stuff. Or, if you're like me and like nature, there's plenty of trails on campus that meander through the many acres of woods and swamp.

    Food and Dining

It can be a hit and miss. Some days are amazing and other days it's not. Besides the cafeteria, there's a market on campus where they have a grill and deli, as well as a mini super market. Between that and the caf, you'll be good.

    Dorm Life

The dorms (at least for men) are pretty good. The freshmen dorm is especially nice. Oh, and they're not coed. Boys with boys and girls with girls.

    Academic Rigor

The academics are very good. Some programs, like Bio, Nursing, Theology, and Music are especially rigorous and intensive are the hallmarks of the school.

    Tips for prospective students

Come open-minded and ready to learn. Whatever you want to find, you will find, so be careful. College is a place to start over and rebuild who you were in high school, so come with a good attitude and friendly disposition. You WILL make numerous friends that way.

    In three sentences

Oakwood has some of the best people, both students and faculty, that you will ever meet at a university. The university stresses both gaining an education and a relationship with God, both very important things. Overall, Oakwood University is a great place to learn, meet people, and grow in Christ.

The food in the cafe is hit or miss. The food in the market is always on point. Choose wisely.

Staying in the dorms is the greatest thing you can do at college. I would argue that it's the epitome of the college experience. This is where people bond and learn how to deal with people.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is of great importance at Oakwood University; all drivers are watched and verified by a campus safety worker as they enter the campus. Campus safety officers frequently circulate the campus making sure that everything is/stays safe. It is a substance free/drug free campus, encouraging students to live a sober, yet healthy lifestyle. There are emergency stations set up around campus where a simple button can be pushed to get a call for help for any on-campus altercations or mishaps which is available 24 hours a day. I definitely feel safe being on campus and have no worries of safety in my stay and neither will you.

    Greek Life

There is no Greek Life on Oakwood University's Campus. Only clubs and organizations, I honestly don't feel like I'm missing out at all with all the other great things to join and participate in.

    Clubs and Activities

Oakwood offers over 30 student clubs and organizations geared towards students specific fields of study, extracurricular interest, spiritual growth and community service. In each department there is a club that caters to the student¢s amplified education within their career paths. There are sports teams such as basketball, flag football, volleyball, soccer, golf, etc. I have participated in the step team, which was lots of fun, but there are also cheer-leading, dancing, drum corp., choirs and singing groups to participate in. Personally, as mentioned before, I've taken part in NAPS, going out to homes and having Bible study with people in the community giving them hope and teaching their children about God. I am currently a leader of OU A&M CONNECT where we travel to A&M's campus and play games get to know students from our fellow HBCU and talk about real issues facing us as the youth of today and how to face those issues with Christ. I was a part of the Allied Health Club where we were able to speak personally with people from our profession getting insight on what we need to know and we participated in community service projects. The social events are exciting and fun such as skate nights, basketball games, concerts, art and soul sessions, late snack study nights, and block parties. All of the things offered at Oakwood has worked together to shape my character, have fun, and make me a better person overall.

Great for these types of students

Oakwood University is great for students who are in search of a unforgettable college experience. Ones who are willing to discipline themselves to be successful and love the fellowship of a home away from home. Oakwood is for students who desire a closer relationship with God and are willing to commit to a life of service for others through their careers. Students who are willing to take advantage of what Oakwood has to offer will not regret their decision and will encourage others to do the same.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Many may complain about the two major traditions that we have when you live on campus and you have not yet become a senior and they are worships and curfew. We are no longer required to have three worships a week in order to leave for the weekend, (after putting in a weekend leave) which may be a bother at times, but if we miss getting the three worships we do get a $10 fine. There are many opportunities to get three worships in during the week, but frankly sometimes you just forget or you just don't feel like going. When I came in, I didn't like the idea of getting three worships because I don't feel like anyone should be forced to get them, but as a matriculated through I realized it's just not that bad. It's a great way to pause from your work and refocus on God, relieving any stress that may have built up from the day. Chapel is something we have for an hour every Thursday morning at 10 AM to have praise and worship, news for students, and a positive thought for the day. If you don't have class until 2 PM it can be a drag, but it's for the good of the campus and its students. Curfew during the week for freshmen is at 12 AM and 1 AM on Saturday's, for upperclassmen its 1 AM every day of the week (except 11:30 PM for all students on Friday nights) while living on campus. This is a bother to many and on few occasions have been an issue for me, but honestly most of the time youre in before curfew any ways because it's a school night. All in all, Oakwood is trying to enforce discipline and values into our lives.

    Bang for the buck

Since Oakwood is a private Seventh day Adventist university, it does cost more than most community and public colleges/universities, but the experience at Oakwood is priceless. In the past two years since I've been at Oakwood I've learned so much and grown drastically spiritually. All might not have this same experience because you have to take advantage of the opportunities Oakwood provides to truly grow. I've taken part in NAPS, going out to homes and having Bible study with people in the community giving them hope and teaching their children about God. I am currently a leader of OU A&M CONNECT where we travel to A&M's campus and play games get to know students from our fellow HBCU and talk about real issues facing us as the youth of today and how to face those issues with Christ. I was apart of the Allied Health Club where we were able to speak personally with people from our profession getting insight on what we need to know and we participated in community service projects. I've worked on campus which allowed me to value the time that I have to get things done and teach me responsibility. The social events are exciting and fun and all of the things offered at Oakwood has worked together to shape my character and make me a better person overall. It may be expensive, but if this is where you are supposed to be, diligently do your part searching for scholarships and God will provide the way, guaranteeing you the experience of a lifetime.

    What to do for fun

The number one thing to do on campus for fun is going to the skating rink. Not everyone necessarily goes skating, which personally I love, but there is a pool table, a ping pong table and a cut out lounge area where people can watch sports or their favorite shows. Positive music is always being played, sometimes snacks are sold, and people are allowed to just relax and have fun. It is not open every day of the week, but about 3-4 times a week its open, the most popular night being Saturday night where most may go out to a club or party that may not be for their best interest, it is definitely a nice positive alternative. There are tennis courts provided where people may choose to play for fun and also a gym where many go to play basketball. There are always basketball games going on during the week which students attend for free with the show of ID's and that is also a great way to kick back with friends. On selected Thursdays during the school year Art & Soul, a poetry/spoken word club puts on amateur nights and club member productions for the students to come and enjoy. There's a swimming pool open certain hours during the week where you can swim and relax. Also, various extracurricular clubs to join such as the art club, step, cheer, or dance team, drum corp., choir or singing group which may catch your interest.

    Food and Dining

The food at Oakwood University is definitely making progress because variety was a major issue. All food/dining areas are vegetarian based, promoting healthy eating habits for students, but if your a meat eater this can be a drastic set back. We have a salad bar, a sandwich bar, a hot food line, a vegan line, and the grill in the cafeteria. Though it seems there would be many options sometimes it was not enough and you might end up eating something you did not truly want, but nonetheless things are definitely getting better. What I love about the cafeteria is that they are always awaiting ways to improve; they set up stations where the students voice their opinions on their dining experience and how we would like to make it better. As their means could provide they are making changes and the experience has been much better. There is also a market area which I believe is the better place to eat on campus where they provide a variation of foods, from pizza's to sandwiches to smoothies and teas, but you do have to use market points when you go there versus using your meals for the week. Since you can know what the cafeteria is serving for the day as you walk in, you can make your decision whether or not you will eat there or the market and make a good balance between foods. The market is more convenient because you do not have to sit and eat, but you can decide to take it back to the room or eat quickly before work or class. Both dining areas are clean, innovated, and provide a nice scenery of the campus in their set locations.

    Dorm Life

Living in the dorms is a good experience, the living space is comfortable and it provides exactly what you need a simple bed, closet, desk and bathroom area. Unfortunately, they do not provide the most up to date furniture, but it's about what each individual prefers. Fortunately, there are quiet hours at night where students are supposed to respect others who want to sleep early, study, or complete assignments. There have been many times where people break quiet hour, but the good thing about it being a rule is that any complaints can be brought to your resident assistant and they promptly resolve the issue. I love that there are cut out study areas on each floor where I can go to complete school work instead of traveling to the library because personally it is hard for me to work in my room. Also, they provide a computer lab where students who may not have their own laptops can go and have Microsoft and internet access. We have a mandatory meeting every month to go over issues that may have occurred in the dorm or things that need to be addressed to residents which have been very helpful. I have been blessed to have good roommates thus far, but if there are any issues the deans are always really helpful to resolve them. Also, the deans have taken strict interest in me when I have been sick in the past which always helped me to feel better because it is truly a home away from home.

    Academic Rigor

The academic rigor at Oakwood varies from department to department, but the university is known for its theology, biology, chemistry, and nursing departments which some may say display the most rigors. Personally, as a social work major there is a stress on turning things in on-time, but some teachers may have grace whereas others do not. The course load thus far is not much, but that may attribute to the fact that I have only currently taken the primary courses in my major due to my recent switch. I currently love the teachers within my major, they truly care about my success. In time courses will become stricter, but most teachers will make themselves available to you for any assistance so there is no excuse for any late work or misunderstandings. You¢re better off saving excuses and getting things done on-time because I have faced several zeros because of poor time management, but I had to learn quick how to improve. You have to study; there is no way around placing simply an hour to study a week for a class because your grades will reflect it. Time management is the key to a successful academic year.

    Tips for prospective students

My tips for prospective students would be to stay focused on your work, choose your friends wisely, and develop a close relationship with Christ. When you stay focused on your work and complete assignments on time you can then ease your mind with leisure activities without worrying. Stay ahead, manage your time wisely and save yourself late nights getting work done that could have been done previously and without the stress. Choose your friends wisely because they will make a great impact on how you spend your time and they are great influences to your character. No one is perfect, but if you notice that your goals and theirs do not match, slowly detach yourself and save yourself the trouble of being in trouble because of others. Having friends who share the same positive goals as you do will encourage a fun, focused, and beneficial school year. Developing a close relationship with Christ will allow you to face trials head on in faith. Sometimes college life will not make sense, there will never seem to be enough time to get things done, but God will provide a way and help you cope and understand your specific struggle. A relationship with God will help you to make the best decisions during the school year because only the creator can know what your true purpose is and college overall will be easier to manage as well as life.

    In three sentences

Oakwood University provides an atmosphere for students to enter to learn and depart to serve others, where education and spiritual life is of primary interest for all students. The campus reflects a home away from home where most exhibit a kind and friendly spirit starting from the president, faculty, teachers, and especially students. There is a guarantee that you will not leave Oakwood the same way you came, you become more responsible, thoughtful, and wise, leaving with a character fit for all life's challenges to come.

Oakwood University is quite possibly one of the best things that ever happened to me. The institution is in no way perfect, but the people you meet and the rich experiences you have supersede the flaws of the administration. Strides have been made since I graduated to fix the internal issues that disqualify Oakwood from getting the national recognition that it would merit if thing were done in decency and order.

You're pretty safe here at Oakwood University.

    Greek Life

We encourage not to have one here.

    Clubs and Activities

There's our 4 choirs (as I've mentioned before). -A basketball team, soccer team, volleyball team, baseball team, and flag football team. -There's the student body committee and we have dorm committees. The dorm committees are in charge of activities in each dorm, and the student body committee deals with the whole school. -Each major has their own clubs. For example, the Psychology majors have the psychology club. They also have research clubs that can help with needed research for graduate school. Other majors have their clubs as well. -We also have the African Club and other clubs that deal with certain ethnicities, however all ethnicities are welcome.

Great for these types of students

-If you are a singer, join 1 of the 4 choirs (I'm in the choir called Dynamic Praise. It's one out of the 2 gospel choirs). -Also, each major has a club. -We have a Spanish Church and an American Church on campus. So if you speak Spanish, you can go to that church, or you can go to the American Church. -If you are into poerty or art, there are clubs for that. The poetry one is called Art&Soul. -If you are into drama, there's drama clubs and other acting opportunities.

Agape Day (as I said before) may be unusual to some, but it is a learning experience for those who participate. We also have a chant that we say. I can't think of it right now, but it's pretty cool. We also have groups that do communittee service such as Naps, R.E.A.C.H. and other outreach groups. We also have 4 main choirs. 2 of them are on the classical side, and the other 2 are our gospel choirs.

    Bang for the buck

Oakwood is all about your perception. How you perceive it is what you will get. The friends are also what you make it. In addition, the teachers are, for the most part, supportive and caring. They want to see you succeed, and will do what ever it takes to help you reach your goal. There's also many communittee service opportunities in which you can participate. One day in October, there's something called Agape Day where the whole school shuts down and goes out in the community to help others. This year, the mayor came by to visit and share a few words before we left. You can also go on mission trips to other places to help out. Our choirs also travel to go and sing. Most of them stay in the states, however, our classical music choir (The Aeolians) travel around the world. You also get a good education and have opportunites to join programs that can help out with your future schooling (graduate school).

    What to do for fun

There's a skating rink (which is always the most fun). There's also a little movie room inside the skating rink where you can lounge and watch tv. There are basketball games, volleyball games, and other sporting games. There's the Market where everyone goes to hang out (especially on Saturday nights). There's also planned activities that we have like the most recent ones where laser tag, a football game party, a basketball game party, and a bonfire with smores, hot chocolate, music, and campfire songs/stories. Now that was fun!

    Food and Dining

The food isn't 100%, however it has its days. The Market food though is much better. Don't use your Market point up in one semester though. Also, if you don't eat a lot, don't get the highest meal plan! (You'll waste your money)

    Dorm Life

The best time EVER!!! Here is where you meet a lot of your long-term friends.

    Academic Rigor

Some classes (teachers) are easier than others, and some majors are easier than others.

    Tips for prospective students

-Put God first in everything that you do. -Keep an open mind about everything at Oakwood University. -Remember why you came to school here (not for a perfect school, but for an education). -Put your education before your friends if you have to because they will be there when you come back. -Aim for good grades! -Participate in the different activities such as our choirs, sports, and clubs. -Don't use your Market points all in one semester! (You'll understand when you come to Oakwood) -Make sure you look at the bulletin for the classes that you have to take based on your major, and make sure you visit your advisor regularly. -Balance your social life, spiritual life, and educational life. -Be respectful and attentive. Also keep up with your work, and ask questions when you don't understand things. -Remember to get all 3 of your worship credits in for weekend leaves and other things (You'll understand soon). -Be on time! especially to mandatory worships and other important times. -Visit D2L regularly! (You'll understand when you get to Oakwood) -If you can test out of a class, do it! (You'll understand this too soon) -Also, make friends! Networking is important for the present and the future opportunities that you can have based on who you know. There are students from all over the states and all over the world here!
