Categories Comments Great for these types of students Oakwood is great for individuals who are looking to grow closer to Christ. He is definitely blessing this university.
Tips for prospective students If you didn't have to work hard or study in high school, all of that changes in college. Come in with a bang. If you don't do well your freshman year, you are going to have to spend the following three years pulling your GPA up. That will not be fun.
Bang for the buck Every school has room for improvement. Oakwood definitely has its imperfections. I know that it is worth every penny because students would not jump through hoops to come back to school if it wasn't. At Oakwood, you don't just get an education that will get you a job. You are being taught how to live in accordance with God's word. You cannot put a price on your own salvation. In teaching you how to live according to God's words, they are helping you to teach others so His love and His words can continue to be spread.
Am enjoying being here At first, I did not want to go to Oakwood. That seems to be a lot of students' stories; however, I ended up there and I am loving every minute of it. I have only been at Oakwood for one year, and I can already say it is the best school anyone could attend. It is so amazing to be around so many young individuals who have so much in common with you from the very beginning. Everyone hears that you will meet lifelong friends in college, but no one can imagine not being friends with their high school friends forever so that lifelong friend quote doesn't really phase them. It was not until I came to Oakwood and started making new friends that I began to understand how the people I was meeting could be lifelong friends. God blessed me with a lot of individuals who have the same goals that I do and the work ethic to get there. If you put Him first, He will make sure that you are surrounded by positive individuals. During my first year of college, I grew close to five different girls that I know will be in my life forever. In just one year, we have already gone through so much. We have watched each other grow as people and in Christ. We know that it is not going to stop at one year. People say that there will be no year like your freshman year and, while that may be true, I know that these next years are going to be even better than my freshman year. I would not trade anything in the world for the Oakwood Experience. I cannot wait to continue my college years.
Am learning a lot The faculty at Oakwood is wonderful. The teachers don't only teach the information in the textbook, but they also teach from the Bible. This is great because, in the end, the only wisdom that will truly count is what we learn from the Bible and apply to our lives. It doesn't matter what subject they're teaching. They all find some way to tie it into the Bible. I came from public school, so I was not used to this kind of teaching structure because it is not allowed. All of my teachers started class off with a devotional thought and/or prayer. I know that set the tone of how the class went. These teachers are truly a blessing because they are teaching us information that you cannot put a price on.

Categories Comments Did enjoy being here I really enjoyed being at Oakwood. When I first attended, I didn't appreciate it until I saw what the school was like. Now, that I'm officially gone, I realize how much I miss the school. The spiritual aspect is a plus! However, there were a couple issues here and there but nothing that one can't overcome and besides every school has his or her own issues. If I had the option again, I would go to Oakwood!
Did learn a lot I learned a lot while attending Oakwood, both inside and outside of class. The school brings in wonderful speakers to talk to the students at different times. The motto, Enter to Learn Depart to Serve is definitely a phrase that Oakwood University stands true to.

Categories Comments Tips for prospective students New and transfer students attending Oakwood this fall, I highly recommend that you all actually take the time to study for your classes. During my first semester I found myself distracted, thus causing me to procrastinate a lot. Although my grades never dropped below a C, I knew that I could do a whole lot better than what I was doing. My second semester I took much more time with my studying and managed to get my GPA up. And besides, there could be nothing worst than spending YOUR summer retaking classes you slacked in, not to mention the money it will cost your parents!
Bang for the buck Oakwood is moderately priced compared to many other private colleges out there. One of the improvements I would suggest is better housing.
Am enjoying being here Oakwood is a Christian university and is very Christ-centered. I actually love going to the weekly worships because there are often very great speakers there. Then there's the work load. What can I say, its college. There are some days that I want to be there, some days I do not. I just try to continue to make the best of it.
Am learning a lot The most of teachers here are great. Although it can be quite difficult to understand them, because of the accents, they do know what they are talking about. Some will even help you out a lot when you assignments are late!

Categories Comments Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Well....The land our school is on was once a slave plantation, there is the National space science and technology center just around the campus. On campus: there is a southern tradition, where people wear money on their shirt to show that it's their birthday & when others see the birthday person they give them money.
Bang for the buck Tuition is definitely expensive for many students - I mean ...it's college. But honestly, you do get the bang for your buck.
What to do for fun On campus, there is a good amount of things to do. You realize that when you and your buddies don't have that much money, pretty much just being together is enough to have fun. Usually with my friends, we'll hang in the library and socialize, play spades, go to the on-campus skating rink, enjoy poetry monthly on-campus via Art-n-Soul, and there are things to do off campus, like go bowling, or go to the movies, or just hang out at your friend's house.
Food and Dining The vegetarian cuisine is usually a last resort. Every now and again some good comes out of the cafe. But th Market is definitely way better.
Dorm Life Freshman dorm is bearable - it could be better. Every college of course has rules, but dorm life is more strict.
Academic Rigor The teachers are adamant, but very understanding and willing to work with you. The work is challenging, but most of the time the burden comes from having too much work to do and not it being too difficult.
Tips for prospective students If you want a personal relationship with God at the same time fellow-shipping with people who believe in the same things you do: Come to Oakwood.
In three sentences Oakwood University is an amazing school where God is present, you meet lifelong friends, and you gain a sense of diversity.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Oakwood is a safe environment and the Campus safety actively assist students in any way possible. To us its not just Safety officers they become apart of our family.
Great for these types of students Any type of student will be great for Oakwood. It is a school that focuses on the individual and their spiritual, emotional, social, and physical growth.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Unusual locations; no not really. But if we are talking about traditions come join us at a basketball game. It will be the most fun you'll ever have.
What to do for fun Well there are plenty of things to do. You have an engaging worship on Sunday called Sunday Evening Praise, on Mondays through Wednesdays it is pretty chill. On Thursdays there is Art and Soul and Fridays are filled with the best AYS known to man. Saturday's are when the campus can be found at the university church and Sunday's are a relaxing transition back into the busy week.
Food and Dining Food has gotten better in the past few months. The food is vegetarian and there are also vegan options available. There is also the Market where you can get away from the food at the cafe and have a fun meal in a more relaxed environment.
Dorm Life Dorm life is fun and exciting! No co-ed dorms so you have to opportunity to stay more focused on schoolwork when returning to your dorm. You meet the most amazing people. You may have some trouble adjusting to living with the same sex for 5-6 months straight but it is very much worth it in the end.
Academic Rigor There are challenging classes that are worth taking. The teachers that are willing to help will help but will not baby you so its best to stay on top of work and assignments. Classes are not too hard; but are far from easy.
Tips for prospective students Stay focused; but allow yourself to have fun. Make it a apart to join something new; it keeps you in the social scene while not being too social. Do what you are asked when you are asked to do it in reference to attending worships and Chapels ; it will save you some trouble later when the bill comes,
In three sentences Great atmosphere, and lovely people. Attentive teachers that will help you not only inside but outside the classroom. Amazing spiritual programs that make you want to draw closer to God.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The best thing I can say about our public safety are the men and women that work in that department. They are so helpful!
Clubs and Activities What I love about the clubs and activities of Oakwood University is that there is a wide variety to choose from. A lot of the clubs put on special events for students to attend that are really fun and make for great memories. Also, some the worships that we have are absolutely life changing. I always look forward to them.
What to do for fun Going to Bridgestreet is something I like to do just to get off of campus. It's a outdoor shopping area with restaurants and a movie theater. It's great to go there with friends for the weekend. On campus, there is the skating rink, the pool and basketball games to go to for fun close by.
Food and Dining The cafeteria of Oakwood University is a great place to socialize. I think that a lot of the students just shut down praising the food at all. However, I think that some days the meals they serve aren't that bad. Just like any other college campus, there are both good days and bad days. Some days we'll have great food and then other days...we just want to order pizza.
Dorm Life There are four dorms on campus. I honestly think that they need more because we are getting more and more students each year. Living in the dorms is nothing spectacular but I think it's a great way for freshman and new students to make new friends right there!
Academic Rigor The professors at Oakwood University are great at getting to know their students to help them learn more about the class. Even though it is a small school, Oakwood University has hundreds of honor students.
Tips for prospective students Apply early! I think it's so important for prospective students to realize that they need to do everything early instead of at the last minute when going to Oakwood University. Get your classes set, get your scholarships set, paperwork and other requirements down early in the summer to make things A LOT easier later on!
In three sentences What makes Oakwood University great is the amazing student body. There is such a spiritual and friendly atmosphere, that everyone can feel welcome and confident in their academic success. Everyone on campus can make your time at Oakwood full of good memories.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is everywhere on campus. From making sure you have the right decal, to driving you to the dorm late at night ( which comes in handy if you stay late in the library to study).
Greek Life There are no greek life on campus, but you don't need a sorority or a fraternity to know you have brothers or sisters on campus. Once your feet hit Oakwood's soil, you know that you have family here!
Clubs and Activities We have great choirs, a drum corps, basketball team (girls and boys) great departmental clubs, socials, USM events, and so much more!
Great for these types of students Oakwood is great for any student! You can be fresh out of high school, returning back to college after some time away, or even a parent, Oakwood is the place for you! Whether it's singing, (even singing in the shower), piano, violin, tuba, cello, or ect.. Oakwood has it! Join the many choirs we have on campus! We even have clubs such as the chemistry clubs, maps, denistry clubs and ect. We have two shopping malls, great movie theaters, bowling, mini golf, and so much more to do here! Gather up some friends and you could have a blast anywhere!
Food and Dining Since Oakwood University is an Adventist Institution, meat is not served in our cafeteria. Don't be alarmed meat lovers, they vegetarian food they serve is still tasty!
Dorm Life I loved my dorm life from Carter Hall to Wade Hall!! The deans are easy to talk to, handle any emergencies well, and look after you just like your very own mother would.
Academic Rigor Since I am in the chemistry dept, the academic rigor is tough! The teachers will make you work hard to get the concepts and understand the materials covered in class, but when you graduate it will be worth it! Although the teachers may seem tough, they are also compassionate and easy to talk with. Get to know them, they won't bite.
Tips for prospective students The first time I stepped on this campus, it was a maze to me. Make sure you know where all your classes are, and get familiar with your teachers. Coming to college, I was extremely shy and nervous but that's alright because everyone else is too. Step out of your comfort zone and try and make friends! You never know if those friends will be life-long ones!

Bang for the buck Oakwood University known for a lot of things. Some of it is true, some of it was true but isn't anymore, and some of it never was true. However, as a current student, Oakwood's reputation for music still stands. The talent that comes in and out of the school is phenomenal.
What to do for fun There are many on campus activities including a skating rink. There are all kinds of Student body event going on throughout the week.
Food and Dining Although, The cafeteria food doesn't appeal to most of the student body, they do serve all vegetarian meals and they also have food for the vegans.
Dorm Life For those that kept their gpa's up in highschool, they have an opportunity to stay in the honors wing. It is first come first serve among those who fit the criteria so don't waste time applying for the honors wing. Describing the physical condition of Carter Hall is pointless because they are renovating the dorm this summer. So the class of 2013 will be in a new building. However, the RA's and Deans are very nice. They are very reasonable and fair when it comes to issues.
Academic Rigor The academics are great. They are challenging and very helpful.
Tips for prospective students It is best to keep up with your papers (transcripts, ect) especially if you're thinking about transferring.

Great for these types of students Oakwood University is great for Christ-centered students who are willing to excel academically and spiritually.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Teachers take the time to take prayer request from students and pray for the students in the classroom.
Bang for the buck Even though Oakwood isn't the cheapest, it is totally worth it. Oakwood University is a place where students get a quality education and an enjoyable experience.
What to do for fun On campus, you can go to basketball games, the skating rink, and block parties for fun. Also, you can go to your respected dorms where they will host game nights.
Food and Dining Food at the cafeteria is inconsistent in terms of satisfaction. There are some days when the food is good and some days not so good. But, there is a market on campus that serves great vegetarian food.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus is a very safe place to be. I never feel nervous or scared to walk alone on campus at night. This is probably not the safest thing to do but if I have to, it can be done. There are police men and the gates are locked and controlled my safety personnel. Oakwood is a safe environment.
What to do for fun On campus there is a skating rink, a gym, and a swimming pool that are all available to the students. Off campus there are also lots of things to do. Be creative and do something different and out of the ordinary!
Food and Dining The food in the Cafeteria doesn't taste horrible usually, but you know anything can get boring and tiring if you do it all the time. Same with Cafe food; it can get into a boring rut. Change is good that is why there is a Market, where you can buy snack foods and fast foods.
Dorm Life Dorm life is whatever you make it to be. If you want to have a good year, be the good roommate. Don't be controversial and choose which battles to pick with your roommate. Pray before you actually move in. I have an amazing roommate and we get along and always ask before using the other person's stuff. This is a great habit to make. But facility wise, I think it's clean and neat. Carter Hall, (Freshmen Girl Dorm) is being redone and updated!
Academic Rigor How hard your classes and the class loads are depends on your major and the professors you have.
Tips for prospective students FILL OUT SCHOLARSHIPS! Don't come to Oakwood to play around and goof off. Have fun, yes! But study hard and make the best of your situation.
In three sentences Oakwood provides spiritually uplifting programs and chaplains that are always ready to pray with you and for you. Categories Comments What to do for fun There isn't really much to do outside of the campus. There are different activities to do around campus that are very enjoyable with friends.
Food and Dining The food in the cafeteria is really bad, however if you go to the market/snack bar the food is really good.
Dorm Life There dorms are nice enough, i live in Carter Hall and the Honors Wing is nice. I really like living there, its a lot of fun and it really helps you be responsible and independent.
Academic Rigor You are in charge of what you do with your grades, it is all your responsibility and you have to be on top of your work and your schedule or you won't do well.
Tips for prospective students Be prepared to expect different things than what you were originally told. Some of the thing that are offered may be different that you think. However, if you follow the list of classes outlined for you, you should be fine. Don't get caught up in other things, have fun, but focus on schoolwork and your classes.
In three sentences A nice place where you are in an entirely African American environment. There are really great people here and when you make friends, school and classes become a lot more fun. Some classes are enjoyable, but some teachers can be extremely frustrating and you may not be aware of your class grades until midterms or the end of the semester.

Categories Comments Campus Safety You're safe. lol
Greek Life I've heard they have Mad Dogs hear, I haven't seen much sorority/fraternity life on campus.
Clubs and Activities STAND (I forgot what it stands for, lol) NAPS (the National Association for the Prevention of Starvation) Education Club OBMA (some biology, science, medical association) Most majors have some kind-of club in their department Mentor programs Intramurals
Great for these types of students Biology and science majors Those seeking life-long friends Those seeking spiritual growth Students seeking to make a difference in the world around them YOU???? (Pray about it) ;)
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We have curfew- the times have been modified, so I believe it's now 11:30pm. The library closes... it's not open 24/7. We serve vegetarian food!! Having a relationship with God is encouraged... you are strongly encouraged to go to a number of worship services each month. Life, and this school is like a rose bush, you can choose to see the thorns (as listed above) or you can smell the roses. The choice is yours.
Bang for the buck Oakwood used to have a spectacular group called the National Association for the Prevention of Starvation (NAPS) on campus, but it has been recently moved elsewhere. This group has helped me become the man I am today. I have grown so much as a person, and have had the privilege of traveling with them to over 13 different states and overseas. They help you live a life with purpose, and help you grow closer to the most important thing in this life- our relationship with God.
What to do for fun For fun you can: hang out with your friends, play basketball or football, go skating, go swimming, work-out, play in one of the dorm game rooms, or learn an instrument. Having a car is definitely a plus. If you or one of your friends have one, you can also go: bowling, downtown, paintballing, skating/ice skating, and out to eat. It's as fun as you make it. We have basketball games, intramural sports; mix all this with some optimistic people and the question becomes what do you WANT to do?.
Food and Dining I think the food has come a long way. It seems like no matter what school you go to, the residents have nothing positive to say about the food. I believe it's because they compare the unseasoned food they receive to home-cooking they grew up on. I believe Oakwood has come a long way as far as the variety and quality of their food selections; I know there's always room for improvement though. Sometimes you have to wait a while to get the best options, and can end up spending more time in the cafe then you wanted- because of that.
Dorm Life The dorm life is okay. They are becoming more lenient as far as their restrictions go, so that's a plus if you like staying out late. I don't spend too much time in my room, but the rooms can use some enhancements. However, if you have great roommates/suite mates you'll have a blast no matter what you do or don't have.
Academic Rigor They have a good biology and nursing program. The education program is okay, I would probably go somewhere else if I was focused on just academics-as far as this field goes. The business department is good, I'm not really too sure how the engineering curriculum is, I know it's a 3-2 year program though. The theology program is pretty good, I've been doing a lot of reading though, so I know the best way to receive pastoral training isn't by sitting in a classroom all day, but by going out into the deep. Some teachers are excellent, while others function at or below par. I'm going to give it 3 stars in honor of the excellent teachers that are speckled throughout the school. Just like we're the salt of the earth, they are the salt of the school.
Tips for prospective students Take time to volunteer and get involved in different organizations. Find your passion now, so you won't end up doing something you hate later on it life. Also, take time to make memories, for we only have one chance to make the most of the opportunities we're given. :)
In three sentences I think Oakwood University is a pretty good school. There isn't too much to do on campus, but they strive to make it a spiritual atmosphere. If you are searching for Christ, and meaningful relationships, you CAN find them here.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Since Oakwood is an Adventist university, there isn't a lot to do, but what my friends and I do for fun is just go skating at the skating rink, hit up IHOP, go to the club down the street or just do random stuff!
Tips for prospective students Make sure you keep all documents that Oakwood sent you, because they will have you running back and forth just to get you enroll into school. Don't spend all your Market Points in one month because you're going to need them later in the semester.....believe me lol
In three sentences Oakwood is a great place! It has some flaws but overall it is a great school! Its a great place to learn and even a better place to get closer to God! And the music and talents the kids have is just amazing!

Categories Comments What to do for fun The campus does numerous activities for students, there's always something going on so you won't be bored.
Food and Dining If you're not a vegetarian you'll have a rough transition into the food that's served on campus. The myths about not being able to cook meat on campus is false, you'll be able to order as much as you please.
Dorm Life Dorm life is fun, it helps you learn how to bond with people from different backgrounds. It's carefree environment, everyone bonds like a family.
Academic Rigor Academic wise study, study, study. Stay ahead of the teacher at all times, review. College is different from High School, it's a completely mind altering experience.
Tips for prospective students If you plan on attending, the first semester will be easy to clear; the next semesters have your money waiting. It's a fun school, you meet amazing people who'll be your friends for a lifetime. The teachers care, but you have to put in your share too.
In three sentences Oakwood is a very good school. When it comes to spirituality and academics it beats all the schools out there. The only thing that I would want to change about this institution is the tuition. It is way too expensive for majority of the students attending.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Not really much fun to do on campus, except during basketball season. If you have a car, then that basically exempts you from that boredom because road trips are almost always taken on the weekends
