Categories Comments Great for these types of students Students who like to learn and have safe fun. Also, Old Dominion is good for students who love social events. Networking is huge at Old Dominion and provides a lot of help for you. If you like to help others as well as enjoy being a part of making the community better, Old Dominion is the place for you!
Tips for prospective students Keep a planner and calendar in order to keep up with assignments, test, and events. A calendar will always help you stay involved and your planner will help you stay on task and keep up with personal obligations.
Bang for the buck Fees are not so bad because they offer a lot of money and the school does not put to much stress on you to pay back loans. The institution allows you to check your payments online in order to help you keep up with how much you paid and how much you owe. Old Dominion payment plans are very helpful and financial aid is super.
Am enjoying being here The school activities are very interesting. There are tons of community service groups and organizations. There is always something productive, educational, and fun to do.
Am learning a lot Old Dominion Professors are very professional and informative when it comes to detailed lectures & assignments.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Old Dominion is for students who want to receive a good education in a comfortable urban atmosphere.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you keep up with all your class material, and don't wait until the last moment to study and do homework. If you follow this, then it will make experience less stressful.
Bang for the buck In-state tuition isn't too bad in combination with financial aid. My parents aren't too stressed about the fees.
Am enjoying being here The student body is diverse, so you meet different people. Also, the events planned for the students allow us to have fun in a safe environment.
Am learning a lot Subject material is distributed evenly through out the semester, so students can comfortable learn and retain information. Just try not to fall behind.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Old Dominion is very diverse. I recommend this school to anyone willing to tackle a promising education.
Tips for prospective students The semester goes by so quickly! My advice is to take your time, and be sure to balance the fun of the college experience with your work and studies.
Am enjoying being here The campus is a little plain for my taste. I found that when I wasn't in class or in the cafe, there was not much else to do or see around or beyond the campus. Nonetheless, I have grown fond of my routine. The people you encounter each day really make the difference. If not for such a diverse and interesting crowd, I imagine the university would not be enjoyable.
Am learning a lot The classes are comfortable and enjoyable. The professors definitely kept me working, but at a pace that was not stressful. Whenever I needed help outside of class, I felt welcomed by the professors, and I was able to keep myself on track. I am truly learning a lot; and am excelling in my major, and I am content with my progress!

Categories Comments Great for these types of students The engineering program here is rumored to be absolutely exceptional. The work load can be a lot but if you manager your time and break up the different assignments, you should be fine. The hundreds of other majors offered here are nothing to put aside. Each department has the best advisers and professors the University could find. ODU has something for every student.
Tips for prospective students Make sure to manager your time when you get here. You will find that there is in fact a lot of time during the day in which you will have choices in what you want to spend it doing. Choose wisely. I have seen too many good students end up dropping out because they played too much and did not study enough. It is hard to say no but sometimes you have to do it.
Bang for the buck ODU does seem to be an expensive school, especially for an out of state student like myself. However, my parents and I agree that it will be worth it when I walk out of here. The quality of teaching and classes is worth it. Plus, there are all the other things that come with those classes. There is free tutoring in any subject and it is helpful, and there are also several free programs for students on weekends or after school hours.
Am enjoying being here The people I have met and become very good friends are amazing. And with downtown Norfolk so close, there is always something to do. It is difficult for freshman students to get around because of the no car policy. But bus passes are free and there is always an upperclassman willing to give carpool rides. Norfolk has so much to offer with its shopping and all the different tourist attractions. There are also many restaurants and clubs to keep students entertained on the weekends.
Am learning a lot I found that the teachers here are focused on teaching their students the best they can. I do have a problem with the math placement scoring, but that is easily taken care of by taking a math placement to place into a higher math. Each of my teachers was willing to help me when I needed it. They have also used what they learned in their experience and adventures to teach me.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Old Dominion Unv. is a great college, medium size, not too small but not too big. This is great for students looking for the not so large class rooms where you feel very impersonable. Yet big enough to enjoy great sports activities and are very competitive with other colleges. Old Dominion has a great college team spirit.
Tips for prospective students The tour of campus is a absolute must. The campus has also been recently remodeled, and several stores/cafes have been added to the campus villlage. When you come for orientation or if it's the first campus visit, it is extremely well organized and well planned out. Every campus student and organizer for these actviities are very knowledgable and nice.
Bang for the buck The tuition rate compared to the quality of education is undenyable.
Am enjoying being here I am enjoying Old Dominion with its great atmosphere, including people and location. Ever since the move onto campus, the other students (freshman and upper classmen) have been very supportive, and very motivated to help out in any situation. There has not not been any unkind words or any problems to make you feel excluded. The campus location is absolutely perfect. It's surrounded by boats, water, and the perfect breeze.
Am learning a lot I find the classes very informative and the teachers very willing to help if there are any issues. There are study groups set up to get feed back from other students and give encouragement.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Local in the hampton roads. Students who want a decent bang for their buck can come here from out of state at an affordable rate.
Tips for prospective students We finally have a football team which adds great atmoshpere and a good sense of community in the fall. There are many events to participate in such as bingo, silly crafts, and games and they are free! The community is not the safest but around campus is nice, and there is not much to ever worry about.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you like science or engineering both of those programs are great here!
Tips for prospective students If you go here just stay safe and be aware of your surroundings. Go to class, you learn more that way.
Bang for the buck It is reasonably priced for a four year university, and there are plenty of scholarships available.
Am enjoying being here The campus isn't that big which is nice, you can easily walk everywhere on campus. The people are great. most everyone is friendly. I love living on campus here.
Am learning a lot College is definitely tougher than high school. I have found myself struggling in some classes but you'll find that at any college. Overall I am doing well in school and I am learning something new every day.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students ODU is a very diverse school. It is good for everyone, from the most outgoing, most out spoken person; to the shyest, most introverted person. There is a place for everyone to feel welcome.
Tips for prospective students One thing I would want prospective ODU students to know is that it is important to bet out there. Meet new people and socialize. You don't have to party each and every week end but you can still get to know people. Just taking a walk around campus you meet groups of interesting people. College is supposed to be the best time of your life, so enjoy it.
Bang for the buck I personally would say that ODU is a bit expensive. It can be costly once you include housing and fees, but you get it back in the end. ODU gives away a lot of free things. There are a lot of activities and other things that students don't have to pay for. Students get into every home game for free and there is plenty of free food
Am enjoying being here I LOVE it here. I can't imagine being anywhere else. There are so many opportunities for socialization among different groups of people. There are also a lot of activities put on by student organizations, like Campus Chaos and ODU After Dark, where you can meet a lot of other people. The students are all so friendly and helpful. Its an overall peaceful and drama-free campus.
Am learning a lot ODU is a great school. The instructors are friendly and easy to contact. They are very fair and very understanding. They are knowledgeable in their fields of study and they are able to give a lot of information on the topics. The professors give so much information that it would be hard not to learn anything.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students ODU is great for engineering and science majors. The classes are interactive and often fun. If you like working with your hands, ODU is for you.
Tips for prospective students Don't be afraid to explore. If you feel alone, there is always a group to accommodate you. Don't be afraid to meet new people and try new things. If you are struggling in a class, do not be afraid to ask for help. There are tutoring centers on campus to make sure you pass.
Bang for the buck My tuition at ODU has gone to good use. The professors are very dedicated to their students and will do whatever it takes to help them succeed, such as recommending tutoring sessions. The food in the cafeterias, especially Whitehurst, is top notch. The high cost of tuition is certainly worth it.
Am enjoying being here The student organizations on campus allow students to get together with other students of similar interests. With so many organizations on campus, it is easy for anyone to feel at home and amongst friends. There is something for everyone.
Am learning a lot The engineering department at Old Dominion University is very dedicated to its students. The professors have no issues going out of their way to help struggling students to succeed. The curriculum is informative and easy to understand.

Categories Comments Tips for prospective students Definitely take a walk through campus for a day to figure out where everything is, and bring a map just in case- at least for the first few days if you're unfamiliar with the campus. Oh and if you decide to dorm on campus try and avoid Powhatan. Being the oldest dorms on campus they are in need of some repair and tlc.
Bang for the buck Had some problems with financial aid and had a mad rush to cover my bill but all is good now. Just was a little stressed to make the bill deadline.
Am enjoying being here Gorgeous campus, tons of places to eat, lots of housing options etc
Am learning a lot The teachers here are witty, polite, funny and extremely caring. All of my professors really made an awesome impression on me and I'm looking forward to taking more of their classes.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are a lot of campus safety alerts.
Greek Life Stay away, you'll be trapped in a web of failing grades and dangerous parties.
Clubs and Activities Lots and lots of clubs and organizations
Great for these types of students Social students who are looking to meet new people will do well; very diverse campus.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus You have to ride the lion fountain to graduate and avoid walking on the university seal.
Bang for the buck Very expensive with no help from financial aid.
What to do for fun Might sound nerdy, but I study with friends. Going to clubs and bars won't be fun when you find out your failing all your classes.
Food and Dining Food has declined greatly since my first year here. I am now a senior and hardly ever go to the cafe. Once, they had egg bologna and bean quesadilla...yuck!
Dorm Life ODU offers really good living conditions. Aim for the village!
Academic Rigor It depends on your major. I am a science major, so it is a little more challenging.
Tips for prospective students Be more academic and less social. Your in college for a reason.
In three sentences Definitely utilize all of the resources that Old Dominion University have to offer. They are here to help and make your career as successful as possible. With your hard work, you will graduate a more rounded person.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students The Old Dominion distance learning program is ideal for students who do not wish to or can not leave their homes for any reason. This is a great way to attend college if you are currently in a career. it is also a way to access a degree if you are not financially ready to move away from home.
Food and Dining no comment
Dorm Life I will not be attending the University Campus as I live over 400 miles away. I am excited about the Distance Learning program that is partnered with our local community college. This way, I can attend ODU and still be able to be with my family.
Academic Rigor The variety of academic opportunities allow students to be able to get a degree in almost any field they want to. I would rate them a 4 star.
In three sentences I am impressed by the care that the staff at Old Dominion University has shown to me in the processing of my admission. They are caring and go out of their way to help you receive all the advantages of attending their college. I am looking forward to an exciting two years with them.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There are several things to do for fun. As a powerful mid major school, nearly every collegiate sport serves as a great venue to watch. There is also an intramural league where you can play football, basketball, soccer, and a host of other sports. In addition, the university sponsors events throughout the semester that allows students to participate in activities that often result in prizes,
Food and Dining The dining services offer several great options. depending on your meal plan, the options seem limitless, but be cautious with your flex points because they can run out before you know it. This fall, the options will be even better when combined with places like Chick Fil-A and Quiznos already in place.
Dorm Life Dorm life is an experience you will never forget. It is an opportunity to form life-long friendships and truly get a sense of what it is like to be on campus. The only downside is that first year students have to live in the older dorms instead of the newer, more spacious ones.
Academic Rigor The academic rigor may seem difficult, but it is easier than people may realize. As long as you stay focused, the courses will flow quite easily.
Tips for prospective students Be prepared for the financial cost of attending this school. Apply for as many scholarships and financial aid opportunities as possible. Get involved early. Join clubs, volunteer, and take advantage of the tremendous amount of areas students can be involved in. Most importantly stay focused. Study hard, take plenty of notes, and do not hesitate to communicate with your teachers regularly throughout the semester.
In three sentences Old Dominion University constantly strives to make the student experience better. The professors here are very focused on helping you pass their class while also preparing you for the courses ahead. I give Old Dominion University the highest possible rating for the simple fact that they make the effort to understand you and help you in any way.

Categories Comments Campus Safety HORRIBLE! It is safe when you are on campus but ODU is an open campus. One street is safe the other the chances of getting robbed is 50%
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Ride the LION : )
What to do for fun House parties, dorm parties are relevant, but always shut down. The ODU police worry about underage drinking more than guns and rapes. I guess its easy work for them! There are a few bars/clubs on Gramby street, 13 min drive from campus. Nothing like a big city life, more like small southern city life.
Food and Dining The webb dining center has increased! Some food is actually good. There is also a Chic fil a, pizza hut, quizznos.
Dorm Life Too many students and too little dorms. University Village is the best dormitory its beautiful, own room, loads of space, full kitchen. However, if you actually want to pass, many of the students living on campus have a goal of going to jail and or getting pregnant. Good roommates are scarce. The dorms are for parties, not graduating.
Academic Rigor Depends on the class and professor. If you go to class and take notes, you can pass. However, some classes are very rigorous. Rate my Professor helps!
Tips for prospective students Be safe! I have known students to get shot and or robbed here. The neighborhood surrounding ODU is ghetto and should be cleaned up! Also, stay on top of your financial aid, grants, and loans. Many of the workers there seem unqualified and uncaring about your career or your concerns. Email, call, over and over.
In three sentences ODU has a great diverse student body where everyone can find a group no matter where they are from or their preferences. There are amazing professors that really care about student success. The only let back is safety here; campus safety is horrible and deaths, robberies, and rape is realistic here so students must ALWAYS be on guard.

Categories Comments Campus Safety ODU has campus security on campus 24/7 and emergency lights throughout campus. It also works with Norfolk police on weekends patrolling the campus at night.
Greek Life There are numerous fraternities and sororities around campus and the population is still growing. You will see a lot of the Fraternities doing events on campus during the beginning of the school year.
Clubs and Activities Anime club, Fraternities and Sororities, Handball tournaments, diving team, flag football league.
Great for these types of students Students who like to skate, go to the beach, fish, or even students who like comic books or anime. ODU has many clubs and organizations on campus that offer a variety of things for different groups of people.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The is supposed a rumor around campus that anyone who steps on the seal in the center of campus won't graduate on time. I'm not sure about everyone on campus but I tend to make sure I don't step on it and I notice other students don't either.
Bang for the buck Quality education, Variety of social clubs and organizations, cultural opportunities, near the ocean and VA beach.
What to do for fun The campus holds numerous events around campus such as Web Jams, step shows, and Laser Tag.
Food and Dining ODU has a lot of variety when it comes to dining on campus. It has three main dining places located in the center and both sides of campus. It also has a number of convenience stores and restaurants located near campus.
Dorm Life The Dorms at ODU very and can be a very good experience or an
Academic Rigor The academic level at ODU can be very demanding at times but it also does well to prepare you for your future career.
Tips for prospective students Take advantage of opportunities given to you. Also pay attention to what the teacher says and don't skip class if possible.
In three sentences Old Dominion University has a beautiful campus that is close to the water. The students here are polite and respectful and just has home like vibe to it. Also the staff at ODU is so friendly and helpful that you shouldn't have a problem getting good grades.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Our campus security is getting larger every year. They are working on building a new campus police station as well. One of the most unique things about our campus police is that they attend police academy with the Norfolk Police Department.
Greek Life Greek life is a big thing on campus, a lot of these groups are very focused on the community around us and you'll often see them doing fundraisers for local charities.
Clubs and Activities Everyone I know is involved in several clubs and activities and the best thing about ODU is, if you don't find a club that is perfect for you, you can make your own club!
Great for these types of students If you are a student that loves getting involved in a little bit of everything, this is the place for you because of all the clubs and organizations available.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We have a huge fountain in the middle of campus and in the middle of the fountain is our mascot, Big Blue the lion. A tradition that we have at ODU is to go out in the middle of the night and climb on top of the lion and then try our best not to get spotted by campus security. If you ever hear someone on campus ask, Did you ride the lion yet? now you know what they mean by it!
Bang for the buck I was really nervous about going to school on a big campus, not because it was a big campus, but because I did not want to feel like a tiny little guppy in the huge ocean. The faculty and staff of ODU really take care of all the students and take pride in it. They help make me feel valued and important which is great.
What to do for fun ODU is located near the heart of Norfolk, VA which means there is a lot of great stuff to do. There are museums downtown along with a mall, our hometown baseball field for the Norfolk Tides, and the ice rink where the Norfolk Admirals play. Also as an ODU student we get into the Zoo for free! Also you can't forget that the beach is not that far away!
Food and Dining The staff in our dining halls are fantastic. They see hundreds of students every day and they still manage to smile and ask how your day is going all while serving up some tasty food.
Dorm Life Dorm life at ODU is a great experience. I was really able to find out what it is like to live on my own without my parents. The RA's hired by the school are probably the nicest people on campus and they make living in the dorms fun and stress free. There is also a lot of security in the dorms so that is a huge plus.
Academic Rigor You have some classes that are easy to some and more difficult to others, that can be said for any university. When you fall in love with your major here at ODU, the academic life is not bad at all. Once you are dedicated to that major everything falls into place and it is easy to succeed.
Tips for prospective students If you're thinking about coming to ODU, make sure to take advantage of all the clubs we have to offer. That is a great way to meet new people that have the same interests as you. Another tip would be, don't be afraid to put yourself out there, everyone on campus is very friendly so hold your head high and be confident.
In three sentences ODU is a great place if you are looking for diversity on campus, there are so many different people on campus that you can also learn more about the world outside of the the classroom. The teachers here are amazing they all have one goal in mind and that is to help you succeed. Overall ODU is a community full of supporters.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students People who are interested in biology, engineering or other sciences would love it here. Also, people who don't mind having a limited campus would be comfortable here.
Tips for prospective students Definitely RESEARCH all the professors who teach classes you are interested in. Some teachers are not instructive, informative or even entertaining. And apply for a scholarship!
Bang for the buck ODU did give me a Monarch Scholarship based on my grades. It has helped me a lot with finances. However, even though the cost per credit hour is low because of in-state rates, if you get a bad teacher and don't learn anything or fail, then it really is a waste of money.
Am enjoying being here I'm not going to lie, I hate the campus. There's not that much culture or other activities.
Am learning a lot So far my instructors have been hit or miss. I loved my Film Appreciation professor, he was very informative. However, my English Composition teacher was absolutely terrible. My other two teachers were bland - neither terrible or overly great. I suggest researching ALL instructors before signing up for class, some teachers here at ODU are just terrible.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Lovers of the beach and water. Students who want a campus with both an urban and a suburban feel to it. Students who want a medium sized college
Tips for prospective students Do everything as early as possible. Make a schedule and follow it. Just have fun.
Bang for the buck All I will say is its expensive but what college is not? Get everything in before deadline or they can really screw you over. But the teachers they hired are amazing
Am enjoying being here All the buildings are walking distance for on-campus students. Depending on where you live, it can take only 10 minutes to get to the classes. Also the campus is peaceful. The football games are amazing to be at and to participate in.
Am learning a lot This depends on the teacher mostly. I have loved just about every one of my teachers that I have had. But they all have a passion about their content and you can see it when they talk to you.

Tips for prospective students apply for room and board AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!! with the increased popularity of ODU some of the dorms have be TRIPLED! however those who are on time for applying to dorms you will be guaranteed a room!

Tips for prospective students Go visit it! I thought I wuoldn't like ODU, but once I went and toured the campus and saw everything it had to offer, I decided to put it on the list of colleges I would be applying for.
Bang for the buck We were told that we were able to save alot of our money by being in state and also applying for merits and scholarships, and the money that we did pay, we could get the miost out of it.
Will enjoy being here I personally didn't want to leave. it has a beautiful and diverse campus with lots of things to do in your spare time.
Will learn a lot I recently went here for a college trip over the summer, and it seemed to have alot of resources and classes to take.

Categories Comments Tips for prospective students Start your application process early! Procrastination can become deadly in a university setting. Even after admittance there is many requirements before you begin taking classes. My advice would be to stay on top of every deadline by keeping a daily/monthly calendar and approaching each task separately so as not to become overwhelmed.
Will learn a lot I am very excited to learn the ideas and thoughts of others and have my own ideas challenged.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Go to Virginia Beach, downtown Norfolk, join the Greek life, sporting events, and lots of concerts are on campus or very close to campus.
Food and Dining Cafeteria dining is a hit or miss. Some days it tastes like good ol' home cooked meals and other days it tastes like high school food.
Dorm Life It was not the best at first because I was in a triple room but so far this semester, I am enjoying it a lot.
Tips for prospective students Allow them to meet some teachers so they can get an idea of how different college professors are from high school teachers.
In three sentences My experience is definitely above par. All of the teachers I've had were extremely helpful to my success in their class and I learned things of importance that I can use later in my life. The campus is extremely friendly and boredom is never an option here.

Categories Comments What to do for fun this is the main reason to why to i decided to attend old dominion. the opportunities in this city (norfolk, va) is endless. there are many companies all around that take students daily for internships or co-op jobs which may be fun for some. also downtown norfolk is less than 5 miles from campus and there are theaters to watch plays, a giant mall, and other shops where you can literally run around for hours and lose track of time. if do not have a car then no worries, old dominion provides its students with a hrt pass that allows them to board any hrt vehicle for free! also the beach is only 22 miles away, so if you feel like taking off and going for a tan then it is an option.
Food and Dining food is a little tricky. there are days where the main cafeteria (cafe 1201) doesn't serve much due to the main fact that there's other things going on campus (basketball, football, or soccer games) and not that many student will eat there. but otherwise the food is very consistent and they try their best to switch it up when possible but keep certain things available. old dominions card center will also give you plenty of options when it comes to choosing a meal plan. i personally recommend the black 225 plan because you can have friends visit and you can swipe them but if you have a weekly plan then those numbers are set for the week.
Dorm Life freshman dorms were probably the worst i have lived at. however compared to the upperclassmen ones i currently am in you can see there is a huge difference. furthermore the freshman dorms have been standing since 1940s. so for old dominion being not such a young school that it is, i will give my respects to the office of housing and residence for continually improving (renovating) the freshman dorms to make them as nice as possible. also being in a freshman dorm you share a bathroom (suite style) with a room next door. if it were not for that i would have never met my best friend and current roommate. so in the end it was worth it and i would never trade it for anything else. also the uppser classmen dorms are amazing, they give you plenty of options: an apartment with a room to yourself but no kitchen, or an apartment with a kitchen, or an apartment but you share a room with someone, or just a plain old dorm.
Academic Rigor in the engineering department, you will find those who have natural abilities to succeed easily, fail. no one is safe from the academics. you must put in time, effort, and even sweat in order to get the good grade you deserve. old dominion insists that it would like to be one of the best universities so you can expect that they will give you your moneys worth and teach you something.
Tips for prospective students know what you want. i highly do not recommend people going to a college just for the heck of it. it is highly irrational and will cost you. transferring between in state schools is a challenge, but can you imagine out of state? in other words, think twice, decide once. furthermore, do not come in thinking college is about fun. remember why you came to college, otherwise you will find your time here very very short. furthermore you should know the expectations old dominion has for their students. they expect the best, and i believe that they are. it may not be an ivy league school, but old dominion will get there in no time at the standards they set for their students.
In three sentences the amount of diversity will almost insure that you can never feel out of place. the atmosphere around campus will make you want to come back to school. the academics will challenge you and bend your mind.

What to do for fun we have over 200 organizations with programing all weekend and sports teams as well. you are never left being bored.
Food and Dining the food is alright, but they do have their days when it is not good but you always have other options. they are stingy as well, so that is a down fall.
Dorm Life although all the dorms may not look the best you will find your friends for life in your dorm. they also have activities in the dorm so you can interact with other students.
Academic Rigor they are tough on academics, but it is good because it makes you work hard.
Tips for prospective students i would suggest making sure you get involved so you can know new people. never stay in your dorm because you miss out on the whole college experience. work on your study skills while in high school because you will need it when you get here. do not let anyone or anything discourage you from attending the university of your choice.

Categories Comments Campus Safety we just upped our campus security with more security officers around campus, more emergency call boxes, and better lighting. yes, there still is crime just like anywhere else, but most of it happens off campus anyway. no one should be scared to walk around by themselves on campus.
Clubs and Activities there are so many organizations to join it's hard to know where to begin. there are clubs for every major that can help you get internships or gain experience and knowledge. there are tons of community service groups which can get you college credits, and of course, there are more than plenty sororities and fraternities.
Great for these types of students everyone! we are a very diverse school.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus a big superstition is that students aren't supposed to step on the school's seal in the center of campus. if you do, it's said that you won't graduate. we also have monarch way which is sort of a strip of unique restaurants and fun stores right behind the book store.
What to do for fun there's plenty of sports equipment you can rent from the rec center for fun, and we also have the outdoor adventure park where you can rent a kayak to take onto the water for the day. also, we're in the heart of the city where the mall is only 10 minutes away, and odu is surrounded by restaurants that cater to students.
Dorm Life dorm life is a great way to make new friends and learn about new things. it's hard finding out about some things around campus by yourself but if you live with people who have a lot to offer then it's so much easier.
Tips for prospective students be smart and manage your time well. learn to take responsibility for yourself and stay safe!
In three sentences odu is an excellent university with a lot to offer to students. the campus is gorgeous with unique buildings, and the school offers a variety of classes that encompass all interests. it's a fun and lively environment with many things to keep students entertained.

Bang for the buck with free tickets to odu games for students, great meal plans to ensure we don't starve, and the classes with great professors, it's worth the tuition and housing costs to attend.
What to do for fun public transportation is free to odu students, so the buses and the tide are free for students and allow them to access all of norfolk, including macarthur mall, the scope, and a variety of other places around the city. the ted constant center is right on hampton boulevard, allowing students to walk there to see concerts, sporting events, and other events there. odu also has a gym facility with plenty of courts, a pool, and an indoor track for working out at or playing a friendly game with friends. there's also football, baseball, and soccer games to attend during their respective seasons.
Food and Dining there's a variety of restaurants on and around campus including chinese, pizza hut, quiznos, subway, chick-fil-a, and grilleworks. the school cafeterias also provide a variety of food with healthy choices.
Dorm Life the dorms never get boring with the ras here plan events for the residents here, and the university provides wireless and non-wireless internet, hd, and the dorms are kept at reasonable temperatures.
Academic Rigor the classes here are taken seriously by both the teacher and student.
Tips for prospective students bring your long board, a large part of the population use long boards to get around on campus.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety has excelled so many expectations and become superb over the last 2 years. The number of security and frequency of patrols has been amped up and to top it off, hotlines and transportation has been provided for the students to freely contact at excellent hours of the day.
Great for these types of students Although the parking space has become limited over the years, the campus is still great for all types of students and is a very diverse, welcoming community.
What to do for fun Like stated before, Old Dominion University has a very radiant atmosphere, and what helps to make this true is the fact that there is the Ted Constant Center, providing the area with concerts, shows and performances for entertainment. Not only that, but there are plenty of restaraunts, clubs, bars, sports fields, malls and movie theaters to cater to the wants and needs of student life.
Food and Dining The location of the dining areas are very convenient, however, it would be nice if they were a bit more open to commuters (such as dining areas provided only for dorm residents)
Dorm Life I give such a low rating because I am a commuter, and therefore have not lived in campus provided dorms at all in my 3 semesters of attending. I will, however, say that it is particularly difficult receiving housing unless you apply for such extrememly early in the semester.
Academic Rigor The studies at this particular college are no more and no less harder than any other 4 year college, in my opinion.
Tips for prospective students A tip for prospective students is to come to ODU prepared and fully dedicated to working, learning and studying, but also have fun while doing so.
In three sentences In the past 18 months that I have attended Old Dominion, I have a gathered enough information to come up with an opinion on the institute. It has a very clean and welcoming campus, the atmosphere is radiant, it's very diverse and hearty when it comes to activities. Although I haven't had too many pleasant experiences with the financial office, I can personally say, I very much enjoy attending this university.

Clubs and Activities There are so many club, sororities and fraternities, and organizations to get involved with.
Great for these types of students This school is great for anyone who wants to experience diversity and step outside their box.
Bang for the buck This university is not overpriced. It is about average for schools in Virginia. The college experience is well worth the cost.
What to do for fun Around Norfolk, there are a lot of places to go. First, Virginia Beach is only a short distance and students can ride the local transit system for free. There is also the Norfolk Zoo close by that is free as well. There is great shopping and museums in the area too.
Food and Dining There are three dining hall on campus for convince. They offer options for vegans, vegetarians, and lactose and tolerant individuals.
Dorm Life Some of the dorms are old and small. However, the RA's are helpful and the housing is temporary.
Academic Rigor Old Dominion is difficult but not out of reach. You will have to work hard but it is well worth it.
Tips for prospective students If you are thinking about getting your education at Old Dominion I would recommend it for anyone who wants an average size school located in a city with a lot to offer.

Clubs and Activities There are is a countless amount of clubs and activities around campus.
Great for these types of students Commuter students Students who love the city Students who need a flexible schedule

What to do for fun There is plenty to do fun at ODU. There are various clubs, student organizations, intermural sports. Also, there is always some sporting event, fair, or student run events happening on campus. Also, there a clubs, resteraunts, malls, beach, and theme parks all close to campus.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The safety on campus has been a bit of an issue recently. If you are not in the wrong places late at night or walking alone late at night than you should be fine. The campus police do bust a lot of parties but they are always responsive.
Greek Life There is an extensive Greek life on campus for all people. They have many sororities and fraternities. There is always something going on with the Greek life.
Clubs and Activities There is a club for everything and everyone. There is always an activity going on on campus.
Great for these types of students Students who would love to be involved on campus. They have everything for students including greek life, outreach programs, and student government. They have clubs for all majors and for all races, religions, and sexual orientations.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is a few traditions on campus. You have to ride the lion statue on campus before you graduate. You also can not step on the seal before graduation or you will not graduate. If you do step on the seal you must sacrifice a plate of food to the lion statue in apologizes for stepping on the seal.
Bang for the buck It is a little pricey but so is every college these days. I think that if you can fund it, it is most definitely worth the tuition. I wouldn't trade this for anything.
What to do for fun There is so much to do for fun on campus. There are bars and restaurants on campus and the campus community is always putting on events for students.
Food and Dining The dining is okay on campus. I ate mostly at the restaurants on campus. The cafeterias on campus had good food but I prefer to not eat there because I would graze. The people working in the cafes are such fun as well.
Dorm Life The dorm life on campus is amazing. The people on the floors in the dorms are always involved in activities in the dorms. The people all become friends throughout the year and it makes the college experience that much better.
Academic Rigor The programs are rigorous and worth it. I have enjoyed being challenged in many ways and I think that the challenge has improved my ability to excel in school.
Tips for prospective students Apply early for the school and for the programs in the school. This school is a lot of fun and definitely not worth missing. This has been an experience I will never forget.

What to do for fun Join a student organization, make lots of friends, and hang out together!

Dorm Life I live off campus, but from what I hear residence hall life is improving.
Academic Rigor Every teacher is different. Be prepared for different levels of expectation. Be prepared to WORK. It pays off at the end of every semester.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Since ODU is in a city, crime does occur from time to time. Some robberies and muggings take place around the ODU campus. However, the campus itself is very safe. And if traveling off campus make sure you never walk alone and try not to go out in the late hours of the night.
Greek Life Greek life at ODU is small, but is constantly growing. Greek life is all about supporting the local community and starting a bond with one another that will last a lifetime. With over 20 chapters to choose from many Monarchs decide that Greek life is the right choice for them.
Clubs and Activities With all the different organizations on campus ranging from Fraternities and Sororities to SGA and academic clubs, there is something for everyone.
Great for these types of students Since ODU is such a diverse school, it is a great place for all types of people. However, if you are not disciplined and prepared to learn, then your journey at ODU might be cut short.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The most well known tradition on the ODU campus is called Riding the Lion. The goal is to ride the lion, which is outside the Webb Center in the middle of campus, without getting in trouble. I don't recommend trying this during daylight hours.
Bang for the buck Just like any college, it is a money making game. Try to stay away from buying personal items in the PODS because they overcharge compared to a local grocery store. However, many things do come free at ODU. There is the amazing gym that you can access at almost anytime of the day. There are also opportunities to sail and golf for little money on the ODU campus that many students partake in.
What to do for fun Since ODU is in such a great location, there are endless ideas of what to do for fun. For starters, if it is a hot day outside a quick trip to Virginia beach is always nice. And if your looking to stay on campus, then the Webb center is always holding activities for students.
Food and Dining Food and dining options at ODU are not the best, but they are certainly not the worst. New students will find that the food reminds them of high school, but the environment around them screams college. Most students favorites are the brand name restaurants on campus such as Chick-Fil A, Pizza Hut, Tropical Smoothie, and many others.
Dorm Life Dorm life at ODU is very entertaining. The people you meet on your halls and floors may become your best friends through college. Not all the dorms are equal though. Scotland and Whitehurst tend to be the more popular dorms while Rogers and Gresham seem to lack in comparison.
Academic Rigor Depending on what your major is the academic rigor will be different. However, no matter what your major is most classes will be challenging. Plan your academic schedules wisely and don't stack to many tough classes into one semester.
Tips for prospective students For perspective students coming to Old Dominion University, be prepared to come in with a mind set on learning. There are many activities to take part in such as sports, fraternities and sororities, and clubs, but the most important thing to remember is your coming to Old Dominion for a degree.
In three sentences Old Dominion University is a unique and diverse college that presents many opportunities to their students. Combined With a great location and many different majors to choose from students will find that Old Dominion is the right place for them.

This tradition consists of stepping in a fountain that surrounds the statue of the lion and climbing up on the back of the lion. Stepping on the Old Dominion Seal is a sign of bad luck and the student would not be able to graduation when they are supposed to.

Given four hundred level classes are harder than three hundred level classes, but with experience, knowledge, and a great professor, the student will be very successful.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The university officials do a great job at establishing a safe environment. It is up to the students to use the resources and make sure they practice safety while on and off campus
Greek Life I have friends involved in greek life who love it. We do have many organizations on campus within the Pan Hellenic and Non-Pan Hellenic Councils.
Clubs and Activities I am the president and founder of a organization on campus. The university makes it easy for you to start a tradition of your own and leave a lasting mark at ODU.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is a tale that says you can't walk across the university seal until graduation or you won't graduate. Student tradition is to ride the Lion before graduation, that's what real monarchs do!
What to do for fun Fun? The beach is 15 minutes away from campus! What more can you ask for?
Food and Dining The student center (webb center) features a variety of dining options including Chick-fil-a, Quiznos, Carolina Cupcakery, Pizza Hut, American Grille, and the School cafeteria. The food in the student cafe' is great. They have an all you can eat salad bar, taco/nacho stations, sandwich stations, stir-fry stations, and they often feature different cuisines.
Dorm Life Although the on campus experience is optional, I would greatly recommend it. A majority of the dorms are newly built or renovated and provide a comfortable living away from home. There are also apartment living options located on campus, which are great as well (your own room, and bathroom)
Academic Rigor The professors at ODU are wonderful, they are fair, and expect you to put forth your best effort as a college student. I am a biology major which can be very difficult at times, however my professors care about my success in the program which helps to motivate me and my peers.
Tips for prospective students I would advise those interested in ODU to apply EARLY! Also, visit the campus before committing and once you are a student, get involved. There are clubs and organizations for everyone, enjoy the campus life especially in your freshman and sophomore years.

Categories Comments Food and Dining Could be improved on allowing students to exchange swipes at any time at the POD and Chick Fil-A.
Dorm Life First year students Try to live in Scotland because Gresham, Powhatan, Whitehurst and Rogers are the oldest dorms on campus and aren't necessarily the cleanest. The housing selection process is at random so make sure you get a lower number and pull your friends up.
Academic Rigor Teachers will not always be nice when it comes to assistance to their course work. The library is everyone's place to be except on the weekends.
Tips for prospective students Study first before you go and do on-campus activities. Don't step on the seal before you graduate.
In three sentences Old Dominion University is a honor based university that thrives on students support. I think that Old dominion University does a great job in trying to maximize the student experience on campus. Categories Comments Campus Safety There are always security walking around the campus to look around the campus for any safety. students can take safe ride after 7:00 p.m till 3:00 in the morning. Students don't have to worry about walking late at night by him or her self.
Greek Life There are four main sororities and fraternities. The members of sororities and fraternities are active leaders in many organization and sports, they volunteer for services to local community. They offer a amazing experience through sisterhood and brotherhood and offer to develop in social and communication skills.
Clubs and Activities There are over two hundreds of clubs and activities you can join. They are well organized and well cooperative that you can always find clubs or activities that are for your interest.
Great for these types of students If you are type of student who are looking for a large, diverse, and long history University, Old Dominion has it all. There are great and safe parties you can join and any sports are really famous at ODU.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is this big medallion that represent ODU in the middle of ground of the campus. The tradition says if you step on that big medallion on the ground you won't be able to graduate from the ODU. Graduate students come and take pictures them finally stepping on that medallion on the graduation day, just for fun.
What to do for fun For fun you can always go to the village at the campus for different restaurants or you can go to the MacArthur mall near the campus. There is also Botanical garden and Virginia zoo to visit. concerts and plays provide by ODU students.
Food and Dining There are total three cafeteria you can go to whitehurst, Roger and the main cafeteria at the Webb center. The dining place is always clean and comfortable for students to enjoy their meal and even do their work. There are lot of different options you can try at the cafeteria and the workers are always kind and make you feel welcome.
Dorm Life Because Old Dominion has long history dorm buildings are consider old. However all the Dorm buildings are close to the classes, you can always go to classes by walk in fifteen minutes. Friendly Resident Assistants are always there for 24 hours to keep you feel comfortable.

Categories Comments Campus Safety If you aren't drunk late at night and walking by yourself, you probably won't get robbed. However there are still a few muggings on campus, so it's best to stay in the light and stay on campus after midnight in a group just to be safe.
What to do for fun I'm an introvert, so I don't go out much, but there is a mall a mile and a half off campus and Virginia beach is half and hour to an hour away by bus. The campus itself holds lots of events every weekend if you don't feel like going off campus.
Food and Dining The food is okay. They have the main cafeteria where they have a variety of food: a pizza line, sub line, grill, desert, and Asian grill. They also have two cafeterias in two of the dorms. They are open during specific hours and have better food than the main cafeteria. It would be nice if they were open longer though. They also have a convenience store called the POD that you can use flex points for available with the meal plan.
Dorm Life The dorms are pretty spacious especially the freshman dorms even though the buildings are older. All dorms have air conditioning and the RA's do programs every couple of weeks for the residents. My RA held a Zombie survival game with a few other RA's and gave out prizes. Living on campus is also the best way to get involved with on campus activity.
Academic Rigor Depending on your professor, the classes can be really intense or really easy. A lot of teachers who give a lot of work and challenging tests are the ones where you learn and understand the material the most. I believe the amount of work given is fair though. I am an engineering major, and I still have some time to myself.
Tips for prospective students If you are weak in math or rely heavily on a Ti calculator, you might want to refresh your math skills. Old Dominion has a no calculator policy for their math classes, so you have to be very comfortable with making graphs by hand, and handling fractions. The science classes do not allow graphing or programmable calculators either. Be prepared before you walk into your math or science classes.
In three sentences Old Dominion is definitely not a last resort school like most people think. I am an engineering major and have found the courses to be challenging. The school tries hard to get the students involved with campus activities, and the counselors talk to every student each semester to help plan their future courses and sometimes help them find jobs.

Categories Comments Campus Safety As we are in the middle of Norfolk, you are going to have a couple incidents here and there. Be smart.
Greek Life I don't plan on pledging but the Geek groups throw the best events and fundraisers.
Great for these types of students Great for any kind of student. ODU is all about fusion.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Definitely learn the Ice Cream & Cake dance, DO NOT step on the seal, and ride the lion statue before you graduate.
Bang for the buck Old Dominion is pretty much in the heart of the city and all the great activities that take place downtown are just a short city bus ride away.
What to do for fun Definitely attend the games. Football and basketball have a lot of participation here in Norfolk.
Food and Dining The cafeteria in Webb is the best
Dorm Life Gresham wasn't great
Academic Rigor School isn't terrible but it also isn't something you can just slack your way through.
Tips for prospective students I would say avoid living in Gresham when you're a freshman. It is really far from everything and crossing Hampton Boulevard can be a real pain in the butt.
In three sentences I absolutely love Old Dominion. It isn't too big and there is always something on campus to do. The professors and faculty are amazing and I am so glad I came here.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are cops everywhere. There is a service that is provided for all students on and around campus. It is called saferide and they will come anywhere on campus to pick you up. This helps people so they do not have to walk the streets at night.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus One tradition on campus is when you graduate, you can walk on the lion crest in the middle of campus. If you walk on it before you graduate, it is bad luck and you might not graduate.
Food and Dining The food on campus is pretty good. I never had any problems with what they served and the food I ate. There are really great places to eat around campus.
Dorm Life Dorm life was fun and you learn a lot about being independent. You learn how to manage your time and how to live away from home. It is a challenge but once you make friends and figure out what you want to do academically things get easier. Dorm life at Old Dominion is good because you still have structure from the RA's but you get your freedom as well.
Academic Rigor Each semester and teacher brings on new ways to learn and challenges to endure. I have been challenged not only by the work the teachers present but having to juggle that with working and family time. All teachers don't expect you to bend over backwards for your class but they do expect the best from you. I have earned every grade I've received and I an OK with that.
Tips for prospective students My tip to anyone who attends Old Dominion is for you to ask others and look on ratemyprofessor.com to find a teacher that suits you. I feel that I have always had great results from the site. Hearing the truth from other students first hand is the best advice you can seek.
In three sentences Old Dominion is a great school for all types of people seeking a good education. There are great teachers but like any university, you have to dig to find the best ones who will guide you to your future. I have grown to love the campus and the school spirit thrives throughout the city.

Categories Comments Campus Safety They have definitely increased campus safety over the past couple of years because of the occurrences near our campus. Its nice to have around especially late-night on the weekend.
Greek Life Greek life is very prevalent here on the weekends, however many of the Greek fraternities and sororities are very involved with doing community outreach programs and are very involved with helping campus students.
Clubs and Activities There are many intramural sports to join, however you will have to search for information on them because advertising here is a little lack luster.
Great for these types of students The school is great for people who want to major in Business, Health Sciences, and Sciences. Not so much for the artsy folk or people who are not very into cliques.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Please don't step on the Seal that is located in the middle of campus for some strange reason. If you do the superstition is that you will not graduate from Old Dominion. In order to reverse this you would have to ride the lion(our mascot), just don't get caught.
Bang for the buck You definitely get what you paid for at Old Dominion. In this recession it would be a good idea to go to a state school like Old Dominion. It might not be an Ivy League school but it does possess other qualities of being challenging in its own right. It is a good school in my opinion and worth every penny.
What to do for fun There is a lot to do around the city of Norfolk. It is a beach town, so you can always go surfing, kayaking, swimming, etc. There is also the MacArthur mall that is nearby, shopping is always fun. There are local clubs you can go to like Peabody's and Fuegos in Va Beach. You can also tour downtown Norfolk and get involved with the cultural events that take place.
Food and Dining Most people complain about the food in the dorm cafes, but trust me it is definitely not that bad. The best places to eat on or around campus are Raising Canes(they have the best chicken tenders and texas toast) and Chick-Fil-A. Our campus has this thing called Flex-Points which is built into your meal plan that gives you a certain amount of dollars to spend at select restaurants and convenient stores on or around campus. There is also block meal plans that give you a set total number of meals you can use for each semester in the school's dining halls.
Dorm Life Dorm life can be good as long as you make the right friends. It is a very big campus and there are so many different personalities that you might not be used to dealing with so you have to be mindful of this when staying in the dorms. Make sure to try to get along with your dorm mates because you no matter what occurs you must still live near them. All in all the dorm experience will be worthwhile and you might even meet some friends for life.
Academic Rigor The Academic rigor in my opinion depends on the student and the course subject. If you come from an elite high school and have prior knowledge the courses might not seem as rigorous. However, if you come in with barely any knowledge on the subject matter it can be rather difficult.
Tips for prospective students Make sure that you have your study skills in order before you come to college, because it could come back to haunt you. Be careful who you befriend, because those are the people that many will associate you with and this can either be a very good thing or a very bad thing. Make sure to see your professors during their office hours if you have absolutely ANY questions regarding material in your class. The professor really want to help.
In three sentences Old Dominion is a University filled with a staff/faculty that cares about your best interest. The surrounding city is very supportive/helpful to the college students in the area. It is an absolutely beautiful campus to attend.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Though campus safety is not the absolute best it can be, it is improving. The recent crimes that have occurred have been an eye opener, and thus caused a change in the way ODU protected its campus. Text alerts and e-mails are sent out to warn students or to update them on any pertinent information. One shooting that occurred last summer created many texts and e-mails to be sent out reporting the crime as well as explaining what measures will now take place. Those measures (increased security personnel, more cameras, and emergency alert towers) were followed through. That is why I believe ODU is changing for the better.
Greek Life Greek week here is intense! The mall is covered with booths, Webb center is packed full of people trying to get more pledges, and the sidewalks are filled with chalk-marked Greek paraphernalia. You would have to see it to believe it!
Clubs and Activities Each major has its own club. Take nursing for example: we have a few clubs (SNA which stands for student nurse's association, PFP which stands for physicians for peace, and operation smile). Other clubs and activities include the student counsel who bring fun and cheer to ODU's campus, recreational sports teams, and so on.
Great for these types of students Great for students who live at home and commute, great for anyone in the military, great for anyone who has retired from the military and want to earn another degree, great for those who love the beach (which is everyone...right?), great for those who love the city feel, great for those who yearn for a fun and rewarding college experience, and finally, great for those who want to go far in the future.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus No one can walk over/ step on the college seal in front of Webb. Also, many students have to ride the lion statue in the same area - I have yet to do so, but I'm sure it makes for a great story to those who have!
Bang for the buck What more is there to say, other than ODU is a great campus! Apply to the nursing program! It will keep you busy, but it is such a good program.
What to do for fun So many options here: any athletic events (basketball, football, soccer, baseball), movies on the mall in front of Webb center, and pool tables in Webb. There are campus excursions that take place throughout the year. Some excursions that I know about are white water rafting, mountain biking, kayaking through the bay and going to the zoo, and even rock climbing. If you haven't rock climbed, there is a wall in the large gym to practice on! Speaking of the gym, for those of you who love to workout - there are 2 gyms! One large one near Webb and the other is in the Village across Hampton Blvd. Also, for those book worms out there, the library just renovated the library to include a learning commons which offers a great atmosphere to read.
Food and Dining There are so many options when it comes to food and dining. The cafeteria offers meal plans or daily pricing to fit anyone's needs. There are also many restaurants both on and near campus that are delicious. Examples include: Perfectly Franks (I highly recommend going there, and of course getting a frank/ hot dog!), Mojo Bones BBQ, Borjo Coffee (a eclectic, yet quaint place that offers a great atmosphere), Starbucks, Chic-fil-a, Subway, and so on. I think there may even be a Sushi place!
Dorm Life I do not live in a dorm, but from what I hear, the dorms are excellent, and they are located amidst the hub of the campus. There are many options when it comes to choosing where to live. The apartments on campus are incredibly nice. Pricing of the apartments is a little steep for those on a small budget.
Academic Rigor The school has many programs, such as the Nursing program, that are on National ranking lists near the top. There is a good balance of academic rigor along with campus activities that will allow you to have fun while being apart of a university that sets high goals for it's students.
Tips for prospective students If you currently live within close proximity to ODU, commuting to and from school is a great option. ODU is flexible in the fact that there are so many options when it comes to parking prices, school schedules, etc. I highly recommend going to school if you are looking forward to a good campus feel with great academic records that will lead you to a bright future.
In three sentences Old Dominion is a prestigious school that offers both majors and minors that are widely diverse. It offers many different schedules, locations, and online options that help make ODU available for anyone's schedule no matter how busy. The atmosphere of ODU is very friendly, the dining options and buildings are all outstanding, and the staff is very knowledgeable in their field.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Old Dominion's gym is the best I've ever been to hands down. It has so many exercise and weight machines. You name it, the gym has it. Classes are given FOR FREE. Tiquando, Yoga, Pilates, Zumba, and many others are available!!!! ODU football and basketball games are awesome, and the environment will only get better since Old Dominion University will be joining the C-USA Division 1 conference on July 1, 2013!
Food and Dining If there is a negative thing about ODU, it's the food. Roger's Hall dining was the best on campus, which was overall pretty mediocre considering the price paid for before the semester starts. Food is repetitive and will get boring. The beginning of the semester is never a problem, but the end gets difficult. On the positive side, when the food gets boring, use your ODU Flex Points! Depending on what meal plan you choose gives you a different amount of points. They can be spent at the P.O.D. stores (convenience store), Chickfila, Quiznos, and other awesome places!
Dorm Life Living in a dorm for my first year was a great experience! I met so many great new friends and learned more about myself! Studying with other people definitely helps you understand topics before a big test. You will be close to all the great activities the school provides and the all day 1201 Cafe in the Webb is perfect for the students' convenience. Scotland Housing is a great place to live, although the competition for freshman is very competitive.
Academic Rigor Classes WILL get tough. Its a matter of time! The first year won't be too bad, considering most students will be taking General Education classes and lower level required classes. Always pay attention in class and be prepared to take notes! Its best to get off to a great start regarding your GPA and study habits!
Tips for prospective students -Study, Study, STUDY! If you need help studying, there is plenty of help available! Professors, instructors, and other students are all available! Not to mention the great tutoring at Old Dominion University! They are ready for you at your convenience! -Do not wait till the last minute to study! It's such a cliche statement but it is so incredibly true. Don't learn for yourself when its too late! Take other peoples past mistakes and get ahead! -College isn't all about studying! Get out at ODU and interact with other students! There is never a dull moment on campus! However, too much fun needs to be avoided! Go to bed at a reasonable time! Trust me, it helps!
In three sentences I LOVE Old Dominion University! Absolutely FANTASTIC school that has a great College of Business. I fell in love with the school, and I'm so excited for my next three years!

Clubs and Activities Many professional and major related clubs, athletic clubs, fun clubs (video game, Quidditch, surfing, etc.)
Great for these types of students Math/Science people, Surfers/Skaters, Athletes, Foreign Students
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is a superstition that if you step on the University Seal in Kaufman Mall you will not be able to graduate on time. Before you graduate you are supposed to ride the lion statue in the fountain in front of Webb Center.
Bang for the buck One of the cheaper Virginia state schools.
What to do for fun MacArthur Mall, Sports Games, Movie Nights, Dorm Activities, Athletic fields and facilities, etc.
Food and Dining We definitely don't have the best dining halls around, but there are plenty of restaurants close by and some cheap college joints.
Dorm Life Tons of new dorms with single room options. Most of them are very close to classes.
Academic Rigor It really depends on your major.
Tips for prospective students Don't be afraid to get involved. Join some student organizations and talk to your professors. Having a good relationship with your instructor can only help you.
In three sentences Your experience at ODU is what you make it. We have great faculty who are easy to access and care about their students. There is tons to get involved with and great sporting events.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Old Dominion University is not in the best area of Norfolk, and many situations of crime, often unreported, occur near and around the campus area, but the security presence is pretty moderate at any hour of the day. Either way, the best advice to give on this occasion is to be aware of your surroundings and have a phone or mode of contact on hand if you are concerned for your safety.
Greek Life The Greek Organizations in Old Dominion have great endorsement in many of the activities across the campus, and have whole streets adjacent to campus brimming with fraternity and sorority members; if you want to have a fun outgoing time with your peers, and want to learn more about fraternity life, then joining a Greek Organization is a good idea for you.
Clubs and Activities There are more than 200 organizations available for students to participate in at Old Dominion University, some associated with academics, and others for hobbies and even more for political interests.
Great for these types of students People who want to major in the Sciences, Humanities, Business and Fine Arts will feel at home with the programs offered in Old Dominion University. Those who enjoy many people in a semi-urban setting will also feel comfortable in the generally bustling campus life throughout the weekdays.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is a big superstition at Old Dominion University where stepping on the metal seal in the middle of the Kaufman Mall is considered a bad omen, and thus the unlucky person will have to 'ride the lion' or get on top of the lion statue in the water fountain in front of Webb Center before he or she graduates, and must not get caught by the campus security on location while it happens.
Bang for the buck In-state tuition is relatively cheap compared to most colleges in Virginia; your best deal would be commuting to and from campus, though the traffic at times is sluggish and frustrating. Tuition may be increasing across the country but for Old Dominion it is not so bad.
What to do for fun Extracurricular organizations and college-sponsored events, as well as sports games are happening every week throughout the academic year. If you get bored, you are obviously not attending these events, usually packed with on-campus students from the dorms; even alumni and previous-generation frequent some of the activities Old Dominion offers.
Food and Dining The Dining Services offered at Old Dominion University provide a variety of options on a daily basis and are convenient for people not commuting far or live on campus. The preparation is considered for mass consumption, as thousands of people utilize the campus cafeterias. Many seats are provided and in a number of settings: three cafeterias are on campus and each has a unique aesthetic. Great detail is considered by Dining Services in making the food, as there are rarely any incidents reported about food sickness, so Old Dominion's reputation is solid as a great provider of nutrition.
Dorm Life Taking up residence in a dormitory is a great opportunity for socializing with peers from all walks of life, making friends and relationships, and having fun; resident advisers on each floor coordinate events to promote an increase in association between the students in each hall. Maintain a good standing with your neighboring student peers and life in the dorm can be very comfortable.
Academic Rigor Most people who attend Old Dominion are simply aiming for a degree and are thus not so worried about their GPA, though many may claim to place great effort in their interests. I am certain there are quite a few who are keeping their grades way up but I have overheard conversations where the average GPA here is not really high, maybe high 2s, low 3s.
Tips for prospective students If someone wants to attend Old Dominion University, I would recommend moderation and control over work and play, or more simply put, time management: make sure you make a schedule and stick to it because losing track can be pretty easy for someone who is new to college living.
In three sentences Old Dominion University is an ideal place for people who are looking to get a degree and go. The university has a bunch of the essential programs from the sciences, humanities, engineering, business, fine arts and pre-med. Furthermore it is a great destination for meeting up with people from across the world as there are ample sister universities abroad that do exchange programs with Old Dominion.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is taken very seriously. Security is avaiale 24 hours a day and there are spots all around campus where you can call if there is an emergency.
Greek Life I am not Greek...
Clubs and Activities There are quite a few clubs and the college encourages students to start new clubs of interest if they can gather 10 or ore members.
Great for these types of students The students are very friendly and candid. I was able to ask many questions and received honest answers.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus I haven't attended yet but I understand there are a great many traditions including the Ice Cream dance and don't tread on the seal or you won't graduate.
Bang for the buck Old Dominion University is a great value for the money. When compared with other universities, I am getting a better education for less money.
What to do for fun There are several places to shop and activities in the area. McCarthur Mall is close by, as well as, Busch Gardens, Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia Beach Ocean Front, Ocean Breeze Water Park and the Virginia Aquarium to name a few.
Food and Dining The food for the freshman meeting was excellent. There looks to be quite a bit of choice when it comes to picking a place to eat around campus as well.
Dorm Life I have not attended as of yet and am planning on living at home the first year. My house is only 20 minutes form campus. I did see that the dorms are very nice and spacious during my tour.
Academic Rigor I believe Old Dominion will be challenging. As I am a freshman, I do not have experience attending. During my freshman day I really got a sense that the staff is there to help during difficult times and decision making.
Tips for prospective students Plan ahead, research you schools before selecting. Old Dominion was an easy fit for me. Take tours of the campuses and ask to speak to actual students, not just staff.
In three sentences Old Dominion University is a great value for the education I will receive. I looked at other collges and this one was the best fit for me. The staff ahs been very helpful and the freshman day was great int hat iw as able to meet many other students and get a feel for the campus.

Categories Comments What to do for fun One of the biggest malls in the area is about 10 minutes down the road. It features a movie theater. There is also a nice riverside area with shops and restaurants to walk around. The beach is about 20 to 30 minutes away from Old Dominion. The university offers activities like movie nights and tripsm etc so there is never a dull moment.
Food and Dining It is great! They offer food just about everywhere on campus. There is a great selection. If you do not want to eat on campus, you can eat down the street where there is strip malls with little restaurants.
Dorm Life I do not live there but I have seen the dorms and they are very nice. However Old Dominion is notorious for not being very safe because it is in the middle of an urban community.
Academic Rigor The academic rigor is very fast paced like any university. You have to really want it to do well.
Tips for prospective students Do not sell it short just because it is a local school, you will receive the same/BETTER education there.
In three sentences Old Dominion offers great diversity. The professors are great. The school is very big.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck Tuition is extremely affordable for this quality 4 year institution and it has quite a few graduate programs too.
What to do for fun For me, Virginia Beach is the best place to go for fun. They have concerts, sports tournaments, and all kinds of celebrations going on at the waterfront.
Food and Dining The Webb Center has a lot of choices for dining, as well as a lot of restaurants within blocks of campus.
Dorm Life I haven't lived in the dorms, but I can tell you they get the best parking.
Academic Rigor It varies with what field you're going into, but if you seek a challenge, you'll find it.
Tips for prospective students If you live in the area, check out their community education classes to get the best feel for what being a student here is like. It really helped me develop a relationship with professors in my field of study who gave me the attention I needed to build a professional network before I even started school.
In three sentences This school gives you a quality education at an affordable price compared to other universities in Virginia. The campus is diverse and has a lot of clubs and activities for involvement. It has campus housing, but it is mostly seen as a commuter school for those who live in Hampton Roads.

Bang for the buck You can't go wrong with Starbucks.
What to do for fun The campus is located in the heart of downtown so there are many options. You can go to the mall, various restaurants and bars, the convention center across the street always hosts something of fun. You're also near the Tides Professional Baseball team and the Admirals Hockey Team.
Food and Dining The campus has various choices, just a little pricey. Guess that is campus life for you.
Dorm Life I don't live in a dorm.
Academic Rigor I'm a 47-year-old college student and have found the work to be just the right amount for the classes. Not too much and not too little.
Tips for prospective students Ask lots of questions of the faculty and staff. Definitely ask your fellow students questions. They are a great source of information.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There has been increasing number of crimes that go around campus, but as long as students are responsible and travel with others, they should be fine. Also, the university offers great escort services.
Clubs and Activities Very near to clubs and bars. About 20 minute drive to the beach, enough said.
Great for these types of students Anybody with an open mind who are willing to try new things.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus To ride the lion before graduating, and not to step on the seal until you graduate.
Bang for the buck As one of the least expensive colleges in the country, Old Dominion University has a lot to offer.
What to do for fun There are many events that go on throughout the year. Nobody will get bored if they keep eyes on them.
Food and Dining Dining at Old Dominion is mediocre. There should be more diverse food as there are students. Dining staffs do try hard to keep the menu healthy and always have vegetarian options available for every meal.
Dorm Life Dorms are much nicer than other universities that have old fashion buildings. Most dorm buildings are pretty new with excellent heating and cooling.
Academic Rigor Classes are mostly casual. Professors are very formative and willing to help. As long as one is responsible with the study materials, there should be no reason from getting good grades.
Tips for prospective students Be active. Meet as many people as you can.
In three sentences Old Dominion University will welcomes students with its unique atmosphere. Fellow students and faculties will reach out to you if you seek for help when needed. It is well known for its diversity and future students will meet different people from different background with eye opening stories.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I do not recommend walking alone at night time on Odu's campus. At night time it is important to be with other people. There are a lot of incidents that happen but if you're smart about where you are and who you're with you'll be fine. There is an escort service you can call if you feel uncomfortable, and Odu police is always a phone call away and responds promptly.
What to do for fun ODU has a beautiful gym with a pool, basketball court, and rock climbing wall. There are also endless clubs available to join. There are tons of inter mural sports as well.
Food and Dining The food is okay. The staff really does listen to suggestion so it is important to voice your opinion.
Dorm Life The dorm life is great. There are many opportunities for socialization among the halls so they are a great place to meet new friends. The location is convenient to the dining halls and classrooms on campus (about a 15 minute walk to everything).
Academic Rigor I enjoyed most of the classes I have taken so far. The teachers are extremely helpful if you reach out to them for help. There are a lot of tutoring opportunities available through the university which are also very helpful.
Tips for prospective students It is important to get involved with something that interests you. This is a good way to meet new people and also keep yourself busy in a productive way.
In three sentences Old Dominion is a beautiful campus with an excellent location. There are many opportunities available. The staff members are helpful and friendly.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are campus police patrolling every night and day, just to make sure every one is safe.
Greek Life ODU has lot of fraternities and sororities. There are even new ones coming out. I am currently pledging for a fraternity called Kappa Sigma, which is totally new in ODU.
Clubs and Activities There are lot of clubs and activities in ODU. You have to choose which one you think is suitable for you, and would not take you away from school.
What to do for fun I usually hangout with friends, play video games, listen to music, and surf the web for fun.
Food and Dining The food an dining in ODU is above average close to being excellent. You can text the nutrition department about they way you feel about the service or the type of food that was served that particular day. They will try to improve their service though your text and make you feel more at home.
Dorm Life I love dorm life in ODU, that is if you are with a nice roommate who doesn't make you feel miserable. But even before coming to ODU, if you know anyone you want to roommate with, you can request for that person, and that person can request for you too. There also a survey about yourself on the housing application, that you can fill. They will match you up with someone else based on the information you provided on that survey.
Academic Rigor Make sure you stay focus in class. The professor might get to like, which is a good thing. My English and Math teachers liked, they even boosted my grade up. This is how much you can get, when a professor likes you.
Tips for prospective students You will love going to ODU. Make sure you stay on top of everything. Like homework and studying for tests. There are lot of opportunities in ODU, just do good in school.
In three sentences ODU is a great school. The diversity is intense, there are students from all over the world. You will always find a nice area to study.

Categories Comments What to do for fun ODU has many clubs and organizations you can join. There is a gym, and there lounges to hang out in and socialize. It's also not too far from the beach, malls, and arcades.
Food and Dining On-campus food is pretty good. If you decide that you don't want cafeteria food, then you can buy fast food.
Dorm Life While being on your own, possibly for the first time, can be fun, you will have many responsibilities. Parties can be fun, but studying is also important. Most of ODU's dorms are more than acceptable.
Academic Rigor ODU seems to be serious about GPA's. Specific majors require you to have a certain GPA and/or overall grade in a class (ex. lower than C average is failing).
Tips for prospective students I recommend that you choose a major you will stick with if you intend on graduating in four years. If you start your freshman year off strong, you won't have to overwork yourself in your junior and senior years.
In three sentences I believe Old Dominion Union is a great school. They seem to care about their students and try to enable them to pursue careers after graduating. Also, they encourage students to go above and beyond what they expect of themselves.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There is MacArthur Mall, the beach, night clubs, different activities on campus, if you have a car, Busch Gardens and Williamsburg isn't too far away, there the other nearby colleges too that have their own fun things. Also, there is a Megabus stop in Hampton that students use to travel to Richmond or DC and from there, even more places.
Food and Dining A lot of people on campus say the food in Cafe 1201 sucks. I beg to differ. Some of the food may not be so good because it may be bland or not cooked the way you want. The only foods you may want to be more cautious about is its meat like steak and baked chicken. Other than that, the food in Cafe 1201 is pretty good (in my opinion). Besides Cafe 1201, they have in the House of Blues, Pizza Hut, Wing Street, Grille Works, Carolina Cupcakery (maybe), and the POD express. Nearby they have Quiznos and Starbucks. In the gym, they have Einstein Bagels and up in the Village apartments they have other restaurants too, not including some that are off campus nearby. There are abundant options available. Plus, ODU has shuttles that will take you to Walmart and Kroger.
Dorm Life Dorm life is great. Try to at least get to know your roommate and become friends. It's a lot easier when you have someone else that can adjust to college life with you. Also, get to know your neighbors and participate in the activities that the RAs have. If you do this, you'll probably have an easier time living in the dorms. Plus, if you live in the Quad, which is where the newer dorms are, that helps too.
Academic Rigor I had a pretty rigorous time in high school and so far, the academic rigor isn't too horrible. It's what you do with it honestly. If you wait until the last moment to study or don't study at all and not go to class, you may have a hard time. Of course, there are some teachers who are more hardcore than others, but it isn't like Harvard or anything.
Tips for prospective students Definitely come visit the school, especially when school is in session and during when it's time to change classes. You can get a better feel of all of the students and the campus in general.
In three sentences ODU is a great place and you'll find everything to do here. You'll find diversity, knowledgeable professors, fun things to do (especially if you have a car), many study abroad opportunities and so much more. ODU gives students who aren't 4.0 students the chance at a quality education and you should find people who you clique with.

Categories Comments Campus Safety In order to stay safe on campus at night, never walk alone. Make sure you stay on lighted paths and walk with a group of friends. If you are alone and need to get back to your dorm, you can easily call safe ride.
Greek Life Greek life is big on campus. Most of the Greek hold the different events on campus and are very active. Although its a public school, we still have the Divine Nine.
Clubs and Activities There is any kind of clubs and activities you can think of at ODU. They are all very active on campus and hold interest meetings all the time.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are one thing you have to do on campus and that is ride the lion before you graduate. Don't do it in broad daylight though! Also, don't ever walk on the seal in the middle of campus or you might not graduate (its a superstition).
What to do for fun There are alot of things to do for fun on campus. There are a lot of events held on campus on a regular basis to attend in your free time. There is a ton of things to do on campus and off campus and you can never be bored.
Food and Dining The food can be good on some days and bad on others. Some students believe that some cafes on campus are better than others. Overall, there are a lot of choices to choose from and you don't always to eat cafe food.
Dorm Life The best dorms are on campus behind the Webb center but they are costly. The other dorms across Hampton Blvd. are not bad but not too bad in price. I lived in the older dorms on campus and I believe they were more family oriented. A Lot of the people in my dorm built bonds with one another and had a lot of fun.
Tips for prospective students For any student attending, use the website Ratemyprofessor.com to find out about your teacher because having a great teacher betters your chances of getting good grades. Also, don't fall into the party madness on campus. Make sure you go to your classes and be a dedicated student.
In three sentences Old Dominion University to me is the best public college in Virginia. The campus is nice and everyone is very welcoming. There is a lot of Monarch pride at ODU and anyone who attends the school will automatically feel it when they first step on campus.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Being in Norfolk, there is only so much the university can do. As long as you stay on-campus and don't wander around Norfolk though, you should be fine.
Bang for the buck ODU is a challenging and good school that is really good at educating its students. Instate tuition is only around $5k a semester, so it is relatively cheap for college.
Food and Dining The food at ODU is very good, there are quite a few restaurant chains, Chick-Fil-A, PizzaHut etc., on or right by campus.
Dorm Life Very cozy in the Quad. Parties at Whitehurst.
Academic Rigor While ODU is not considered one of the elite schools in the country, it is probably the 4th best school in the state. UVA, VT and W&M are the only schools that would be considered a better education, but as ODU is a far less expensive alternative to them it is almost better.

Dorm Life I commuted to and from classes from Virginia Beach. I parked off campus to save money on parking passes. I road my bike to class and around campus, great for the likely possibility of classes being far from each other. The dorms did look very nice and super close to gym!
Academic Rigor Courses are tough and require lots of study time, planning time management is key!
Tips for prospective students Always research your teacher and ask who others recommend, great teacher make for a great college experience. Join clubs to make friends and gain study buddies, you never know who you'll meet!

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is security and police everywhere. There are incidents that happen near campus, but as long as you make smart decisions, you shouldn't be concerned.
Greek Life There are plenty of fraternities and sororities to choose from. They help you get connections to the community and guide you through alot of decisions.
Clubs and Activities You can get involved with clubs any day of the week. There are clubs that involve helping the community or the campus. You can even create your own club if you can get enough people to sign up for it.
Great for these types of students I can't speak for every student, but I can speak for myself. I was unsure about my major and my future, and ODU is helping me mold everything together. ODU is the school to be at for students like me.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus During rivalry week for basketball, we smash a VCU colored car to pieces. It's pretty cool. It takes place right next to ODU's lion statue.
Bang for the buck The football team has really been on the rise nationally. The basketball team has been fun to watch lately as well. The stadium environment is so live and fun to be a part of.
What to do for fun If you are the athletic type, you can go to the campus recreational center. If you like to dance you can go to the Webb where they have DJ's and dancing through out the year. You can also ride the free HRT bus to the beach if you want to spend the day off campus.
Food and Dining ODU has plenty of places near campus to eat. There is also a huge cafe in the center of the campus, and small deli's are everywhere. The quality and the variety of the food is always on point.
Dorm Life Dorm life at ODU is amazing. There are plenty of people to meet, and plenty of places to study if it's to loud in your room. The rooms are small, but that motivates me not to stay in my dorm all day.
Academic Rigor A rigor academic setting can only take place if you let it. Make things easier by staying calm, and focused. Don't let distractions take over.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you stay flexible. Don't choose a major, a class, or a career that you cant handle. It's normal to change your future goals.
In three sentences Old Dominion University is a stepping stone toward success. On that same stepping stone there are oppurtunities that can boost your career into play. ODU is a great school for any student who enjoys learning.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The ODU campus is pretty safe and the officers and officials are always thinking of new ways to keep students safe on campus. There is a Safe Ride program that allows students to ride home safely in a school owned van and officers are always patrolling the area at night.
Greek Life ODU has all of the fraternities and sororities that you could think of. Greek life are always trying to get more students to become a part of their family. Greek life is a great way to meet new people and have a social life, while still staying focused.
Clubs and Activities There is an activity for everyone on the ODU campus. The clubs and activities range from academic to leisure. Students cannot ever be bored at Old Dominion University.
Great for these types of students ODU is a great school for those students who just would like to have some fun in their free time, while also staying focused on school so they can graduate in time.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus ODU has a seal on the ground in the middle of campus and it is said that if you step on it you will not graduate on time. Students say that in order to reverse the curse of the seal you have to ride the lion we have on campus. The lion is a huge fountain with a lion statue in the middle of it and you would have to ride it before the ODU police catch you!
What to do for fun Here at ODU, there are so many things to do on campus. Some include club sports, campus activities, and even movie night every Wednesday and Friday. Movie night is when students go to see movies on campus for free in a building with a large screen. Sometimes popcorn is provided. The movies are fairly new and students love to go to these movies so they do not have to spend money at the theaters.
Food and Dining The food is pretty good here at ODU, and a lot of the food has southern influences. There are two or three cafeterias and other well known food stops, such as, Subway, Chick-fil-a, and Starbucks. I think that there is even a bus that takes Norfolk State University students to the ODU cafes because the food is so good here.
Dorm Life The newest dorms are the best dorms ever! They are really nice and are in the perfect area in the middle of campus. The older dorms are not so great, but they are not as terrible as other college dorms may be. All of the dorms have air conditioning so you will be comfortable living on campus.
Academic Rigor Old Dominion University really encourages all students to do their best. They even put students on academic warning if their grades are not up to par. You will have a certain amount of time to get your GPA up, and if you fail to do so, then you will be kicked out. The classes are not extremely hard as long as you pay attention and do your work.
Tips for prospective students If I had to give future students any tips, one of them would be to stay focused on school work. It is very easy to get distracted due to all of the fun activities and happenings at Old Dominion University.
In three sentences Old Dominion University is a great school to come to! I would rate this school an 8 because everything about it makes students feel welcome.

Categories Comments Campus Safety BE CAREFUL!!! If you live off-campus, don't live in the surrounding neighborhoods. Your chances are very high that you will become a victim of a robbery or worse. Believe me, I've lived in Hampton Roads my entire life and I know what goes on near campus. ODU is making efforts to step-up campus security, but I wouldn't advise anyone to live in the apartments or townhouses near campus. It's just not safe.
Greek Life I was never a sorority girl, so I can't tell you what Greek affiliations are on campus.
Great for these types of students Traditional students, commuters, military, and non-traditional students.
What to do for fun Well, there's the Constant Convocation Center for sports and entertainment (concerts, comedians, etc.). The great thing about Norfolk is that there's A LOT of culture and you can always find something to do.
Food and Dining I never ate in their dining hall, but they have many other options for those seeking something besides grazing the cafeteria. There's Chick-fil-A, Quiznos, Pizza Hut, Starbucks, and Freshens to name a few. It's been a while since I've been to the main campus so these may have changed. If you get a chance to get off campus, check out Doumar's on 21st Street. It's an old-school drive-in with an old-school flair. I absolutely love going there when I need a change-up.
Dorm Life This isn't applicable to me since I never stayed on campus. However, they have upgraded their housing options over the past couple of years. In 2007, they built new dorms for students who planned to stay on campus.
Academic Rigor Compared to my undergraduate experience at a different college, I would consider ODU to be quite rigorous. This is especially true if you're an education, human service, or counseling major. There are a lot of papers and projects to complete.
Tips for prospective students A big tip for students who plan to live on campus: please practice safe habits. Unfortunately, the nearby neighborhoods surrounding ODU are notorious for crime. There are also numerous incidents that have occurred on campus throughout the years. If you must stay on campus, always be aware of your immediate surroundings and try to go in groups when walking around campus during the evenings.
In three sentences Old Dominion is a fairly large school set in Norfolk, VA. The surroundings are very urban and it doesn't look like a traditional college. A large percentage of its student body are commuters. Many of them live off campus in one of the nearby cities. ODU has a great distance learning program and evening classes for those who are non-traditional students. I take all of my classes for ODU at their distance learning site in Virginia Beach. It's a lot closer to where I live and much more convenient.

Food and Dining Starbucks, Subway, Pizza hut and the Cafe
Dorm Life I am not currently living in the dorm, I am currently commuting in order to save money
Academic Rigor Academic is a big part of college. Number 1 priority in your college is your GPA.
Tips for prospective students There will be a lot of distraction, but learn how to control yourself in order to achieve greater.
In three sentences Old Dominion University offers many degrees and it also a great way to have fun. Old Dominion University offers free tutoring, and help all around campus for help on anything you need.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus police are a great group of individuals and are easy to reach and seek out. There is also spots all over campus with phones that are connected to the campus police for emergencies.
Greek Life Not currently involved
Clubs and Activities Many clubs and activities to become involved in, there is something for everyone and is a great way to meet others.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The rock climbing wall is one of my favorites, you can meet up with other fans before class in the morning and even go on trips with them. There is also a seal in the middle of campus that you shouldn't step on until you graduate, tradition is that if you do step on it before graduation, you will not graduate!
Bang for the buck Great experiences and education is worth every cent.
What to do for fun Norfolk is a great area, and is surrounded by plenty of sites to visit, like Virginia Beach, Yorktown and Williamsburg. If looking to stay close to campus, there is many clubs to join, a gym with rock climbing wall and a convocation center for events and concerts.
Food and Dining There is a dinning hall which has many food options, like Starbucks, Pizza Hut, Subway and the Cafe. Also, for quick snacks, vending machines are available in most halls. Service is quick and friendly.
Dorm Life I live at home with my husband, can not judge but I'm sure they are nice.
Academic Rigor The courses do challenge you and are meant to, you can not succeed without pushing your self. Stay up to date on studies and try not to miss classes.
Tips for prospective students Don't be afraid to reach out for help, the instructors and student aids are available through office hours or you can set up appointments to speak with them. There is also a tutor center that is open and extremely helpful.
In three sentences This is a great college, every person there is very helpful and informative, and the campus is very nice. The layout of the college is very easy to navigate but spaced out enough to not feel closed in. All of my instructors are easy to reach and speak to about issues or concerns and really seem to care about every individuals success.

Categories Comments Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is a large seal in the middle of the campus that you do not step on. It is funny to see every student avoid it like the plague. Myth has it is that if you step on it, you will not graduate.
What to do for fun There is so much to do on campus! But I love getting lunch at the near by Ghent district.
Tips for prospective students Attendance to your classes is key. Apply yourself in each class and use your time wisely.

Categories Comments Campus Safety While attending Old Dominion University i have never once felt unsafe walking around at night or the day. In the event i did ODU offers so many programs that include escorting services and emergency stations to call for help.
Clubs and Activities As stated previously over 300 student clubs exist that are always having some type of activity every day.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is the University Seal in the middle campus and if you step on it, it is said that you will not graduate on time. However, there is one way to counter this course and it is to ride the statue of the lion we have on top of a fountain. At Old Dominion University on tuesday and thursday we have activity hour and no classes are schedule because its an hour given to students to promote clubs, have little gatherings, and even fraternities do step shows at this time some times.
What to do for fun Old dominion University is very involved with their students. Every weekend ODU has dedicated an entire club to having events being held every weekend throughout the school year. ODU offers over 300+ student organizations to join as well and allows students to create their own if one does not peak their interest.
Food and Dining I will be honest the food is probably the only thing that is ok here. However, i will say we have plenty of other options in and around campus that offer food in the event one does not want the cafeteria food.
Dorm Life over 60% of our freshaman stay on campus at Old Dominion University. There are many programs made to make campus safe and the community within the residence halls cannot be matched.
Academic Rigor The classes are pretty tough at Old Dominion University, and of course there are those few easy A classes but as for the major classes, I will admit that these classes really do test your knowledge on the material and force you to learn the material in order to properly take it with you into life after college.
Tips for prospective students Studying is key to any college success story Finding how you study is Essential! Making many friends to help when you may not quite understand Talk to your professor if you ever get lost or need some help Seek tutoring at least a week before your exam Make a class schedule that works with your personality(morning or night person)
In three sentences On any scale i would put Old Dominion University at the top every time without hesitation. With a growing campus that offers everything and anything any one student would need while attending school. By just visiting this campus and taking a tour any student would see that the pedestrian friendly campus, diverse population, and beautiful landscape envelops anybody into the school and making one a part of the school without even attending yet.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is a security guard around 24/7. They will walk you to/from classes at night. There's lots of safety people, really.
Greek Life Not too involved myself, but there are lots of groups.
Clubs and Activities 300 clubs, programs all weekend...there is always something to do.
Great for these types of students Relaxed, those who like technology, those who want a bigger campus but want to still be close-knit.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We do the Ice Cream and Cake dance at sports games of any sort, and we have lots of cheers.
Bang for the buck It's a more modern school, and uses technology a lot. Good for a student that wants something a bit casual and contemporary.
What to do for fun There's over 300 clubs and organizations. Pick one. There's a huge gym, and lots of places to hang with friends. Look around at flyers--there is always something going on. The student Village has lots of restaurants and such.
Food and Dining The food is really good, though there can be days where it's not the best. All you can eat, and there is some variety in choices.
Dorm Life The dorms are nice, and there is always someone to talk to/hang out with.
Academic Rigor It's going to be challenging like any school, but the classes are engaging and there is lots to choose from.
Tips for prospective students Read your textbooks, try not to be late, and work hard. Get to know your professors. GET INVOLVED--ODU has something going on pretty much all week, so there is no excuse not to get out and do something fun.
In three sentences It's a beautiful campus, and everyone here, faculty and staff want to help. The classes are engaging and interesting, and professors want to see students succeed. Finally, it's got hundreds of activities and clubs to balance study with fun.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus isnt in the best part of town but for the most part there are no crimes. The ODU police are always on the look out (although mostly to give people tickets from parking in the wrong area)
Greek Life there are tons of frats too. Some are dedicated to things like music or even just charity work or hanging out and having a good time.
Clubs and Activities There is a huge selection of clubs.
Great for these types of students Any kind of student would like it here i think.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus You are supposed to ride the lion which is the fountain in the middle of campus. but don;t get caught by the police. also we are know for the ice cream and cake dance. look it up on youtube just search odu or old dominion university ice cream and cake.
Bang for the buck Its relatively cheap school you will spend about 16-18 thousand a semester if you are on campus and take a full load of classes so i think it is definitely worth it.
What to do for fun You are so close to a thousand things its endless what you can do. Beaches, bars, malls, etc. you can go downtown (odu gives you a bus pass that brings you all over the city). Lots of places to shop, lots of places to eat. I really like going downtown it's my favorite.
Food and Dining It could be better for how much you are paying but its not disgusting. I hate the meal plans because they seem like such a waste of money but they require you to have it to live on campus in a dorm.
Dorm Life The freshman dorms aren't great but they are livable. and the upperclassmen dorms are great. The only issue is the housing department is awful at helping people and for the most part do not know what they are talking about.
Academic Rigor Nearly all the professors i have had are great. They are all very patient with teaching and can explain things in may different ways so you can gain new perspectives of what they are trying to teach.
Tips for prospective students Explore your opinions but don't forget about ODU. They might not be as prestigious as other schools but it is worth your money.
In three sentences Old Dominion is definitely the place for me. There is so much school spirit here and so much to do around the area. The professors for the department i am in (music) are top notch.

Categories Comments Campus Safety We have ODU police and Norfolk police around campus constantly. This is a big upgrade since prior years when incidences have happened, and there weren't many police officer around to prevent it. Now, after a certain time, if you live in a dorm, you must check-in at the main desk to verify that you live in that building. If you want to bring a friend in, you must get a guest pass prior the cut off time and they can stay the night if they'd life (male or female), but must stay with you at all times.
Greek Life I wasn't into the Greek Life prior attending college. It didn't seem to fit the type of person I was at the time. However, now I'm researching what the sororities mean and what would best fit my personality. Greek Life is really big on campus; you can't go a day without seeing someone rep their sorority or fraternity.
Clubs and Activities Like I mentioned earlier, there is over 300 students clubs/organizations for students to get involved in. Some and maybe most clubs don't require any prior skill or knowledge. We all start from the beginning here! OSAL, which stands for Office of Students Activities and Leadership, is in charge of all the organizations, and allow every students an opportunity to get involved.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Ice Cream and Cake dance has become an ODU tradition that students, faculty, and locals even appreciate. During half time and the third quarter of the football and basketball games. The Ice Cream and Cake song comes on, and we all as a unit dance to the song with the ODU choreography. It beings us all together and we look like a big family.
Bang for the buck We have two bookstores. One which is school sponsored, and another that isn't but has cheaper books. I recommend going to the cheaper bookstore to get a bang for your buck, otherwise, get it online; if it's not at either, then resort to the school sponsored bookstore. Also, we have a dining place called the P.O.D where students who are on a meal plan can use their meal swipes and do a meal exchange (instead of going to the cafe, get a sub?) However, the prices for the miscellaneous items can be a bit pricey, so I recommend you get whatever you need at Wal-Mart or use your flex points if you please.
What to do for fun Of course, the party life at any college is going to be listed as fun for college students. Aside from parties, I enjoy taking naps when I can, hanging with friends, riding the bus to go to Chipotle or the Mall, and the list continues...
Food and Dining To be quite honest, I love that I have $450 flex points that I can use at Chick fil a, Pizza Hut/Wing Street, Panda Express, Starbucks, Einstein Bagels, etc. The food they have in the cafeteria isn't all that good. It's a hit or miss, which is why most students use their flex points, use their own money to eat out, or simply cook!
Dorm Life At ODU, there is no curfew, even for freshman. I love the fact that the dorms are spread out, but not too far. The price for living in dorms are reasonable for the average student/parent's budget. The quality varies, but overall, there's a sight to see no matter where you lay your head!
Academic Rigor Thanks to blog.ratemyprofessors.com, I get the chance to see how my fellow peers rate their former teachers. If the teacher received a bad critique, then I most likely won't take that class, unless that is the only professor teaching it. I trust that ODU students are honest with their feedback otherwise the class could be dreadful.
Tips for prospective students Come in and get involved! There are over 300 clubs here, and getting involved will help you network and find yourself. Also, take the UNIV 100 class, it taught me a lot about how to transition into the college life.
In three sentences Old Dominion is a fun-filled, diverse, and driven university. I'm proud to call ODU my home and I plan to excel in my academics here. ODU makes the students feel as if they can make something of themselves, despite their background.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The one thing I like about the campus safety is that no matter what time it is they allow safe ride. So if you feel uncomfortable to go home from the library late at night they will drive you home so that your safe.
What to do for fun I can't really comment on what to do for fun around ODU because I am always working or in class. However, my roommates are always going out places to eat and events that the school hosts. They also go out to many clubs around here.
Food and Dining The food and dining are okay. I personally do not try to eat on campus that much because it's the same food all day basically every day. But when I do eat on campus it's okay not disgusting.
Dorm Life I was giving off campus housing at the District which isn't dorm life but feels like it. I would rather live on campus than over here because it's safer and less expensive to live on campus. It honestly though is personal opinion on if you like it or not.
Academic Rigor I believe that the academics at ODU are more challenging than other institutions. I transferred in from a community college in Pennsylvania and its so much different. The teacher staff here are more difficult and many of them seem to make it like they don't have the time for you to give you outside help.
Tips for prospective students Some tips for prospective students that they should research all colleges before picking the one they think the really want to go to. Another thing is to analyze the area that you would be around in case for some reason on campus housing was not an option. Lastly when deciding your school pick the school that you like not what other people are influencing you by.
In three sentences I would describe Old Dominion University as a beautiful campus and many things to do. I would say that there are many opportunities that Old Dominion allows their students to take part in like clubs, organizations, etc.

Categories Comments Campus Safety ODU does their best to make sure students stay safe, and have every chance to avoid danger. There are blue polls all around campus where students can call 911, as well as the safe ride system that will pick you up and take you anywhere on campus.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus When walking through the middle of campus it is said one should not step on the seal because if you do you will not graduate. I have heard that if you step on the seal the only way to reverse it is to ride the lion that is in the fountain in front of the web. Most people, like myself, ride the lion anyways, you are supposed to ride it sometime before you graduate regardless.
Bang for the buck Old Dominion makes sure you get the best education for your money, they offer plenty of chances to meet with advisors, get tutorers, and take interesting classes.
What to do for fun For fun we tend to get together with all our friends and hang out, if there is something going on around campus we find ourselves stopping by. It just depends on whats going on around campus, I can honestly say I am never bored when I am at school.
Food and Dining The food is alright, but I am a very picky eater so I can only judge so much. However, Ledgends in the freshman dorm Whitehurst is the best cafeteria on campus. The pod, where you can use meal swipes for a sub or pizza, drink, and chips, has really good subs and pizza. All the places in the web like Subway, Panda Express, and Pizza Hut Express have a nice selection, and a very quick pick ups.
Dorm Life I have enjoyed living in the dorms so much. It has been an overall great experiance, at first it is a little strange to live with someone else but you get used to it. I am staying in Scotland on the quad and the building as well as the people, such as other residents and the people who run the building have made this a positive experiance for my freshman year of college.
Academic Rigor The classes are very informative and quite interesting and the professors do their best to help you understand the material. The work can be slightly overwhelming at times but there are plenty of resources to get help whether its the professor or a tutorer.
Tips for prospective students While your considering all your choices for college I would reccomend coming and visiting the campus. Visiting the campus was the final deciding factor for me, as soon as i arrived i felt as if the campus was exactly where i belonged. Another tip is to look into clubs and organizations you may be able to join before you come so you are ready to get involved and meet all the welcoming members of the monarch family.
In three sentences Old Dominion is a very close knit comunity when it come to Monarch Pride and Student involvement. I have had many opportunities to meet new interesting people in this warm learning environment. ODU is not only amazing for its social aspects but its academic as well, the professors take classes very seriously and are willing to help if you ask they want you to understand the material and are willing to take time to make that happen.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The safety on campus could be better because we are so close to a unsettled neighborhood there is a issue of non students on campus and robberies, but the campus is trying to beef up the police.
Greek Life Greek life is always doing something to keep students involved and updated.
Clubs and Activities Hundreds of clubs for everyone and many activities on a daily basis.
Great for these types of students The library is great for students who really like to feel comfortable while they study while not being cramped up in your room.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Do not step on the ODU seal in the middle of campus because they say if you do then you will not graduate.
Bang for the buck You most definitely get your education for the money that you pay.
What to do for fun Loads of different activities to do and keep you intrested.
Food and Dining Great food and many different food places to try and many of the places are in your budget.
Dorm Life I do not stay on campus, so I can not really explain campus life, but I have heard from friends that it is lots of fun.
Academic Rigor The professors really challenge you in every class that you take.
Tips for prospective students Pay attention to due dates, attend class, ask for help because the staff and professors are willing to help.
In three sentences Great campus activities. Great teachers with plenty of knowledge. Really diverse environment with great students willing to learn.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Although it is in an urban city, ODU takes safety really seriously. NO ONE should walk alone, no matter what college you are at. They have buses and Safe Ride services, as well as security patrolling the campus 24-7. There are cops on bikes, in cars, on segweys, etc.
Greek Life Greek life isn't huge on ODU's campus, but it is definitely growing. With my experience I love being involved in Greek life at ODU. It gives you opportunities to give back to your community, as well as meet awesome people that have similar interests.
Clubs and Activities There are a lot of club and activity fairs that can help you find what you are looking for on campus. Anyhting you want to do from volunteering, greek life, academics, club sports, etc.
Great for these types of students Students who want a diverse campus life, as well as a city college.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Delvecs 99 cent pizza slices, riding the lion, football games, ice cream and cake dance, ODU cheers.
Bang for the buck With the scholarship money they offered me, and their lower-than-other-VA-colleges tutition rates, I do believe I get what I pay for. All my teachers have been awesome.
What to do for fun The NorVa and MacArthur mall are right down the street from campus. There is a ton of awesome restaurants, bars, and clubs off campus as well.
Food and Dining Average college dining halls. One main one, two smaller ones in two different dorms. Despite there being a few convenience stores with subs and pizzas, ODU could definitely stand to have more readily available (and cheaper) places to eat around campus.
Dorm Life Not the best dorms, but not the worst! Some close to restaurants, Whitehurst is right on a beach with a beautiful sunset.
Academic Rigor Really depends on what teachers you get, check rate my professor before adding classes!
Tips for prospective students If you apply to ODU with a good GPA and you're also involved with your school, you could receive a scholarship from the school!
In three sentences ODU is located in the awesome and eclectic city of Norfolk. It's a fairly nice (and rapidly growing) campus with an array of diverse students and teachers. The sports are exciting and there is always something to do!

Categories Comments Campus Safety The first week of school they gave out rape whistles along with a key chain with safe rides number on it. Safe ride runs from 9pm-1am. So if you are stuck on the other side of campus and you don't feel safe walking or you're too partied out call safe ride and they'll pick you up.
Greek Life On Tuesdays and Thursdays we have activity hour from 12pm-1pm and usually that's when everyone sees the most of the sororities and frats. They usually step or hop in front of everyone.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus A common hang out is in the Webb. ODU is famous for Webb jams along with themed weeks promoting different causes. Also they are always giving out free things at events so you can represent the school and spread awareness.
Dorm Life Living on campus has its ups and downs. I live in Gresham which is on the other side of campus, with that I am limited really to the people i meet because of this. My advice is to try and live in the quad, its nice and smack dab in the center of campus where everything is close.
Academic Rigor If you are a nursing major or engineer major the work load can be harsh. In these majors certain classes only have one professor, which means the classes are usually large. With that you can't be afraid to speak up and approach your professor when you need assistance.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you stay focused on your classes. Make a goal for yourself and what you want your GPA to be then go for it. Remember you're in college to learn, you are paying for it!
In three sentences I would have to say Old Dominion would be rated a 3. This university definitely knows how to bring people out and make them want to get involved. This school is very diverse in many ways one can never get bored.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is crime because it is a university and it is in a city but I always see the campus police out patrolling and I always feel safe.
Clubs and Activities Contains all your typical university clubs and activies
Great for these types of students Traditional students that are going to live in a dorm. The university doesn't really cater to non-traditional commuting students. A non-traditional student that lives off campus can attend this university but it isn't very convenient.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus I am new to the campus so I haven't learned any unusual things yet.
Bang for the buck The Web Center is great. There are restaurants to eat at on campus if you get hungry and I LOVE the Starbucks.
What to do for fun There is a lot to do for fun in the area depending on what you like to do. If your into the night life then Granby Street is popular. If you like to shop there is McArthur Mall. Plenty of parks and museums.
Food and Dining There are plenty of restaurants on campus in the Web Center such as Chick-fil-a and Starbucks...Yum!
Dorm Life I don't live in a dorm so I can't really rate it. My rating is based from what I've seen. They look to be fairly new and nice.
Tips for prospective students The campus and surrounding areas flood really bad when it rains. Parking is a problem. Parking is scarce and expensive. The university doesn't really cater to non-traditional commuting students. A non-traditional student that lives off campus can attend this university but it isn't very convenient. There will be classes in your major that are only offered in the middle of the day. Parking is scarce and expensive. You pay a transportation fee in your tuition and then you have to pay for a parking permit each semester.
In three sentences ODU is a great university to attend. It is an urban setting in downtown Norfolk, so everything is close.

Food and Dining The food SUCKS
Dorm Life the dorms are very new and modern
Academic Rigor The classes are not hard
Tips for prospective students I highly recommend ODU to any student who is looking for a quality education at a quality price

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Those seeking a culturally diversified campus.
Tips for prospective students Plan out courses needed and class schedule as soon a possible and register for classes each semester as soon as they are available on LEO. Also the campus is located in Norfolk Va. which is not a safe area what so ever. Always walk in large groups at night, observe your surroundings, walk in well lit areas, and take advantage of security to walk with you to your dorm or car if you must walk alone at night.
In three sentences On a scale from 1-10 I would like to rate ODU in 3 categories, such as effectiveness of professors teaching methods, class size, and courses offered. For effectiveness of professors teaching methods I would like to provided an 8 rating. For class size I would like to rate them with a 9 and courses offered I rate I feel as though they have earned a 5.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Since ODU is in Norfolk, there have been robberies, gunshots, theft, etc. As long as you don't walk alone, you're fine. Just be cautious of where you are and be aware of your surroundings.
Greek Life Although I'm not in Greek Life, I do see them around on campus. They're very active in each sorority/fraternity. Since it is a bit pricey to participate in Greek life, I think making friends in clubs is just as good as making friends in a sorority/fraternity
Clubs and Activities There are many clubs and activities you can join depending on your interests. If there isn't a club that you want to join, you can create your own club as long as you have enough members and an adequate cause. For me, clubs were a great way of meeting friends and creating a social network of possible opportunities in the future. Definitely get yourself involved if you want to get the best out of college.
Great for these types of students ODU is very diverse, so any type of student can enroll and have a good college experience.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus For an ODU student, you cannot walk over the seal in Kaufman Mall until you have graduated since there is superstition that you will not graduate if you step on it before. Also, it is tradition that during your years at ODU, you must ride the lion statute placed in the fountain of Kaufman Mall.
Bang for the buck If you work hard, ODU provides many types of scholarships that you can be eligible for. For me, I'm going on a full ride because of the scholarships and grants I was eligible for. Therefore, hard work always pass off somehow.
What to do for fun There are many things there that you can do for fun. If you don't like hanging out with friends on campus, playing in the game room, or relaxing in common rooms, downtown Norfolk has places you can go visit. Since ODU is in the city, there are more places to explore.
Food and Dining The food and dining there is sufficient overall. In the beginning, the chefs cook better quality food since the parents are exploring the campus with their children. However, when it's past the first couple months, the food is only sub-par. But where the food is lacking, the workers there are very friendly.
Dorm Life Dorm life was definitely a great experience. I met some of my close friends as a freshman, and it was fun living on your own away from home. I did wish the RA's were more active in getting everyone on the hall to meet each other or have more programs, but I would definitely recommend living in the dorm.
Academic Rigor In the honors college, there are more students willing to push each other to do better in college. You have to surround yourself with more students who want to strive academically. The classes can be sometimes challenging, but the academic competitiveness between peers to get better grades is lacking at ODU.
Tips for prospective students I have actively engaged myself throughout my attendance at ODU, which has provided me with many positive experiences socially and academically. Even though partying may be a fun experience, if you ignore academics and only enjoy yourself, the money spent to take classes in college would be wasted. You'll get as much out of ODU based on the effort you put into it.
In three sentences In comparison to other universities, I rate ODU as a 6.5/10; it has many opportunities for those willing to work for them. Besides the somewhat dangerous environment in Norfolk, the teachers may not actively try to help you, but if asked, they will work with you to pass the class. ODU is sufficient in providing me with an adequate education, but the students have to really strive to search for them in order to get the best out of the university.

Food and Dining Cafe 1201 is the main cafeteria. There is a good choice of food, but the quality is not always top-notch.
Dorm Life Living on-campus is such a great thing at ODU. the Quad is inviting with activities all the time.
Academic Rigor ODU courses challenge you. They are not impossible, but by no means are they easy.
Tips for prospective students ODU has majors for everyone. If you want to succeed, this is a great school to do just that.
In three sentences A great environment for school, and living. ODU has an attractive mid-size campus. I am happy with my choice.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Police station right on campus. Emergency call boxes are all around campus. Within the last two years campus police has been expanded for further coverage and safety on campus.
Greek Life Many Greek orgs to choose from. There are always many events that they invite students to observe.
Clubs and Activities Many organizations and activities to choose from. October is homecoming right after fall break and in April is Campus Chaos which is like field day for college students.
Great for these types of students Social, athletic, studious. It's for everybody!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Riding the lion. It's risque but people do it and get away with it.
Bang for the buck I wouldn't change my school if I could do it over.
What to do for fun The beach! There is a metro line that goes to the beach and there is much to be explored in the Hampton Roads area. Downtown nightlife is fantastic especially if you know where to go.
Food and Dining The main cafeteria is okay. Having the option of other fast food places included if a meal plan is purchased saves one from making trips to the cafe.
Dorm Life Great experience freshmen year. The lottery system is terrible and new housing needs to be built. But the experience is great overall.
Academic Rigor Sometimes the lower level general education courses can be harder than the 300-400 level courses. Study!
Tips for prospective students The writing entry exam is important so make sure you focus on that so you won't have to take a pointless English class at the beginning of your freshmen year. Go to as many school events as possible mix and mingle with your peers.
In three sentences Definitely an upcoming school not only statewide but nationwide. Lots of diversity. Big enough campus to have the full college experience but small enough to walk from end to end.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There is always something going on at Old Dominion University to really help keep the students occupied. The Student Activities Council and other clubs really try to keep the activities fun for students. For example, one theme was Marvel vs. DC for night life. The Student Activities Council put together a night where students could make their own superhero cape, they had other students dress up as certain heroes, there was games and food for students to enjoy all for free.
Food and Dining There are so many dining options for students both on and off campus. The variety keeps something new and different for students to dine, and that is a major plus. Also, all these dining places are close to campus. The only thing is that you really do pay for that convenience, but there are coupons or specials that can help.
Dorm Life I don't dorm, but I heard a lot more ups than downs. The only thing I've experienced first hand were tiny dorms, but they also have nice sized dorms as well. I guess it just depends on where your dorm.
Academic Rigor The courses have a lot to ask for from the students, and it will definitely feel like a lot. However, there is all kinds of help for students who seek it out. ODU wants their students to succeed, and they offer the proper resources necessary to succeed.
Tips for prospective students I understand the big move to college can be slightly intimidating, but don't worry too much. For example the first week of school, there were little stands everywhere on campus with maps and people to help other wandering students. College is a wonderful experience, and you should try to make the most of it. Don't be afraid to ask for help because it will be everywhere for you; take advantage of it.
In three sentences I feel that this is a wonderful school to get a degree. I was welcomed here with open arms, which makes transitioning from high school to college a lot easier. The campus is nice, and it's located in a beautiful city in my opinion. The whole university community is pleasant, and I don't aim on heading anywhere else.

Categories Comments Campus Safety It is a big city and there is some crime down in downtown norfolk. As long as you go out with friends and don't go looking for trouble you should be find.
Greek Life There are a lot of Sororities and Fraternities so many that a person would have a vast amount to choose from.
Clubs and Activities Mainly the clubs at ODU are based on causes for the community and humanity. It also has a lot of religious clubs and booking clubs that help with concerts.
Great for these types of students Its great for a someone wanting to pursue a degree in the sciences. It has a lot of students for other countries and transfer students.

Bang for the buck You can find many loop holes for expensive things at this college. Financial assistance is very lenient with helping new students and the working class.
What to do for fun Norfolk has lots of theatres, malls , and school clubs. Finding a group of friends and going to the Scope ( theater) fir concerts is the normal hot spot.
Food and Dining There are lots of places to eat here since it is a big city. From Chinese to Latin Cusine on campus and off. Meal plans are required for on campus students and your parents can add more to your account.
Dorm Life The honors dorm or The Quad is almost like an apartment you have your own room, living room and you only share a bathroom with one other person. However it is expensive to live there . The regular dorms are cheaper and are suggested for Freshmen undergraduates.
Academic Rigor The classes are moderate it actually depends on what you sign up for and your major. For an example if you are majoring in the Arts then its not really difficult but if you are majoring Engineering and Sciences then it can get pretty hectic.
Tips for prospective students If you have trouble ask the professor they get back to you in the matter of a few hours.
In three sentences Old Dominion is a beautiful environment to grow mentally and socially. The very students themselves help you organize, plan, and study for any task. It is a place where you can be a big fish if you truly desire.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety has improved over the years however more is needed to ensure that each and every student on campus feels safe and is educated on how to prevent an act of crime from happening to them. Campus safety holds informational sessions and hands out informational fliers on fire and natural disaster safety. As well as bike safety and security. There are other forms of safety such as Safe Ride and the bus Shuttle system. Campus police are always willing to help if there is every a problem.
Greek Life There are approximatley 27 Fraternities and Sororities on campus. They engage in many hours of community service as well as are a big part of different events throughout the year on campus.
Clubs and Activities Old Dominion has over 300 active organizations on campus. From the African Caribbean Association to the club swim team there is an organization for everyone to enjoy.
Great for these types of students The Office of Intercultural Relations is a safe haven for international students. One program that stems from this office is the Global Monarch Club. This club participates in a mentoring program which aides in providing the smoothest transition possible for students planning to attend Old Dominion from another country.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus One tradition that every senior takes a part is stepping on the school seal located in the middle of campus on their walk to the Ted Convocation Center on graduation day. It symbolizes the end of their college career the beginning of a new chapter. However one does not step on it any time before that day because if you do you will not graduate.
Bang for the buck Its significantly expensive, financial aid doesn't always help.
What to do for fun The most opportunity for fun stems from athletics on campus. Attending games and sporting events is very entertaining. Homecoming weekend is by far the most fun and when many major activities take place. The surrounding city of Norfolk also offers various activities for college students such as free admission to the zoo, museums and movie theaters as well as free transit on the hampton roads bus service and Tide rail service.
Food and Dining The food at Cafe 1201 is excellent and there is much variety to choose form during peak hours of service. Legends is very decent as well, significantly smaller but caters to the needs of the freshman dorms and Powhatan apartment residents. There are also numerous restaurants such as Subway, Starbucks, Panda Express, Pizza Hut and Chik Fil A located on campus.
Dorm Life Dorm rooms are limited and its a first come, first serve basis. However, the living conditions are very decent and the village apartments allow the most opportunity to be independent. The Quad dorms are among the most recently built and are in great condition. Some freshman dorms are older and require more maintenance than others.
Academic Rigor I believe that Old Dominion demonstrates the perfect balance of challenge when it comes to learning and the opportunity to excel in the classroom. Professors give their best so that we can do our best.
Tips for prospective students The first tip for prospective students is get to know you adviser, they will be able to guide you the entire four years, take advantage of that because they are there for you. Great for these types of students Education Accessability is there to help anyone with ANY dissability. Also, you can have your papers reviewed, and you have access to the public library online.
Bang for the buck It's a great school in economic terms. The quality is certainly worth the price.
What to do for fun I've always turned to recreational sports and exercise to handle pressure. You may want to explore other hobbies (i.e. writting).
Food and Dining Great area for food and dinning. Simply look around Colley Avenue.
Dorm Life I'm a transfer from UVA who lives off campus. I have no such experience.
Academic Rigor Stay on top of your studies to prevent an overload.
Tips for prospective students Take the classes you have to take for any major before you begin to feel out your career path. Get an advisor and use degree works to help keep yourself on track. Also, hold yourself accountable for homework with a planner of sorts.
In three sentences Despite a few hitches due to my late transfer, the faculty wants nothing more than to see you succeed. I'm a late transfer, as I've been fighting brain cancer, even with limiting side effects, the Education Accessibility program was in place to help.

Categories Comments Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There's a myth around campus that if you step on the school seal located in the courtyard in front of the Webb you will not graduate.
What to do for fun There are literally hundreds of clubs and activity groups on campus that are always hosting events or having celebrations for something. The Student Activities Council has a huge calendar of events (anything you can think of, i.e. the showing of popular movies). If you want to go to the mall or anywhere around Norfolk the card center gives you a bus pass for the Norfolk bus.
Food and Dining The cafeteria(s) here always have an amazing variety of tasty foods and the staff is extremely friendly. If you don't want to eat in the cafeteria you can always get a to go box or pick something up at one of the many restaurants in the Webb.
Dorm Life ODU dorms are some of the best you'll find in Virginia. The best part about the dorms is that no matter what dorm you are in you won't be sharing a bathroom with the whole hall. The RA's are always available for any academic or personal help/advice you will need.
Academic Rigor The rigor really depends on your professor. Being college all courses are of course faster than high school but if the professor offers any outside help- take it! And as always not all teachers are as hard or serious as others.
Tips for prospective students Don't be lazy your senior year, take challenging courses. Apply for as many scholarships as possible, tuition and fees are not cheap!
In three sentences The campus life is what you make it. You've got to be grounded in your studies. Overall GREAT school!

What to do for fun There are so many organizations all over campus that meet during activity hour. Everyone is welcoming and there is no reason to have nothing to do.
Food and Dining Great dining options all over campus. Make sure to visit P'Franks in the University Village!
Dorm Life Most of the dorms are well in the center of campus and everyone is a short walk from each other. Plenty of fun things to do.
Academic Rigor The math and science departments are well respected and require a lot of work.
Tips for prospective students -Take a tour around campus. Driving through it doesn't give you the same feeling. -Get involved in the community.
In three sentences ODU is a great school. Everyone is friendly and welcoming and the academics are taken seriously. There are many options for improving yourself and getting the college experience.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus itself is pretty safe and has security at all times but there are some parts outside and around the campus that can get somewhat dangerous at night.
Clubs and Activities There are a lot of clubs and activities at ODU. I get approached almost daily with people trying to have me join there clubs and a lot of them sound very interesting.
Bang for the buck This school is relatively cheap compared to other colleges but if you want to save on half your tuition then don't stay in a dorm. There are many apartments around campus for cheaper with a roommate.
What to do for fun The campus always has something going on and there are many things around campus and downtown (which is only 3 minutes away) to do for fun.
Food and Dining This school has a lot of places to eat and very good food. There is always a choice when trying to figure out where to eat
Dorm Life The Dorms are a great way to meet new people and everyone in the Dorms from my experience is very nice and willing to make new friends.
Academic Rigor This school is not very hard in academics. As in any college sometimes knowing when to say no to going out and studying instead can make a difference between an A and a C.
Tips for prospective students The best tip I can give you is to study. Even though you may not have much homework, you should always study to be ready for unexpected material.
In three sentences Old Dominion University is very diverse. It has many opportunities for internships and leadership opportunities. This school also has many great teachers that are willing to go above and beyond when helping students.

Dorm Life My opinion here really cannot serve anyone, as I have lived off campus my entire career here at the school.
Academic Rigor Anything worth getting shouldn't be easy, but it should be aptly challenging.
Tips for prospective students Get to know as many of the staff as possible, as they will help you on your journey to becoming a better you.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is a five out of five. If you are out late at the library or class there is a number you can call and a police officer will head up to where you are and give you a ride to your car or dorm.
Great for these types of students The type they enjoy being close to everything. you are never far from a mini mart, subway, or class. It's a very compact campus.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is a lion mural in the middle of campus, its said that if you step on it you will never graduate. It's funny to see the new students faces when they see us split like the red sea around it.
What to do for fun There are many things to do for fun on campus, from parties to private movie viewings. There are also a few sororities and fraternities one can join.
Tips for prospective students Old Dominion is a very open campus and its easy to get distracted with all the things to do. The best advice I could give for perspective students is to go in with an open mind and a ready to work attitude. Being able to go to college is a gift and its not one to take lightly, keep your priorities in check.
In three sentences Old Dominion is the perfect fit for anyone and everyone, diversity with the students is the best part about the campus but the professors are just as great. Diversity with the students is the most amazing part of the campus because everyone is different, its like America the melting pot of people.

Greek Life They just celebrated Greek week. ODU is big on the Greek life.
Clubs and Activities There are a whole bunch of different clubs and activities here. If you do not see one that you like, you can get a sponsor and like ten other people to make your on club. But I am pretty sure that you can find at least one that will interest you.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus It is a tradition not to step on the seal in the middle of campus.
Bang for the buck Most schools are very costly. I believe that ODU is a great school and the money we pay will be worth it in the end, I just do not like the fact that they take things out of your tuition, so your paying for somethings even if you do not use it.
What to do for fun There are many clubs that hold different events. You can go to those events, or join the club to give ideas of different events. There is always something to do on campus for fun.
Food and Dining The food is pretty good in the beginning. After eating it for a while it get pretty old, but most of the time they have different options. Just make sure you have plenty flex points or monarch plus, so that you can eat other places when you get sick of cafe food.
Dorm Life Dorm life is what you make of it. The RA's are pretty cool and down to earth. Make sure you room with someone that you have a lot of things in common, so you do not get into many conflicts.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I have never felt threatened on ODU's campus. The campus police patrol during the night as well as during the day and the university offers Safe Ride. Safe Ride is a system that picks up students from anywhere on campus and takes them to their dorms or friend's dorms. This service is offered at night and I use it all the time.
Clubs and Activities There are hundreds of clubs on campus and each one has a lot of members. A few times a year, the clubs have a fair where they all set up tables to demonstrate what the clubs are about. There is at least one club for everybody. It's hard not to join all of them!
Great for these types of students Old Dominion University is great for students that are willing to learn and also have a good time. Teachers make their classes enjoyable as well as challenging on some levels, and they are always eager to have personal relationships with their students; they want to help students succeed.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Every student has to know how to do the Ice Cream and Cake dance. At every football and basketball game, students stand up and dance to Ice Cream and Cake. Everyone helps each other out when learning how to do it and it is a great way to feel like one big family as a university.
What to do for fun There are a lot of things to do for fun on campus. Every weekend, the Student Advisory Council plans something fun for everyone so there is no need to worry that anyone will ever be bored while on campus. The campus is also close to downtown Norfolk, the beach, and Busch Gardens, which opens doors for nonstop fun.
Food and Dining There are plenty of dining facilities on campus. There is always something open, especially for those late night munchies. The food is good and the staff is even better.
Dorm Life Dorm life is wonderful. Everyone is friendly and helpful, especially during the first few weeks when everyone is figuring everything out. If you keep your door open, people will drop by to say hi and you have the opportunity to make a lot of new friends.
Academic Rigor Students at Old Dominion University are expected to work in order to be successful academically. There is plenty of time for socializing but organizing time for studying is important too. As long as one is able to juggle social life and academics, one will succeed with flying colors here at ODU.
Tips for prospective students Students should get involved on campus during their first year. Getting involved opens doors for new friendships, connections, and academic help. It really is the first step to getting the most out of one's college experience.

Categories Comments Food and Dining Cafeteria food is nasty. The only time it's decent is the first two weeks of the semester and those weekends when future students and their families come to visit. Luckily we have other food places on campus. Subway, Pizza Hut, Chick-fil-A, Raising Canes and Panda Express help balance out having to eat the cafe food.
Dorm Life Most of the resident halls are new or have recently been updated and remodeled. You can choice from classic dorm living, suite style living and apartment style living. Housing is competitive though and the housing process is nonsense, honestly. But living on campus helps you make friends and stay in the know about things happening on campus.
Academic Rigor The professors and instructors take their job seriously, they expect their students to come to class prepared, ready to learn and able to participate in class discussions. College work is not like high school work, waiting until the night before will not get you the grades you want. Stay focused and be on top of your game.

Bang for the buck Not exactly MY point of view, but my mother (and the one helping me pay for college) was really impressed with ODU's tuition. We looked at other colleges in the state and she believed that ODU definitely a bang for the buck.
What to do for fun Old Dominion always has something to do. It's only minutes away from the beach, it's right inside the city of Norfolk (shopping mall, concert venues, fine dining, etc.,) and the campus is always pumped. Homecoming week is something you CANNOT miss!
Food and Dining Old Dominion offers SO many food and dining options. From chicken wings to Subway to Panda Express to Tropical Smoothie to Hibachi Grill, every cuisine you can think of is on campus or right around the corner.
Dorm Life I won't enroll into ODU until the fall semester, but I am highly impress with their dorms. I am so excited to live on campus here!
Academic Rigor ODU is not a difficult school to be accepted into, however, I am going to a part of the Honors College with a much different academic rigor and atmosphere. The Honors College is for students mostly looking to attend graduate school, and students must keep a 3.25 GPA to remain in the Honors College, a much higher academic requirement than the rest of the school. If you are looking to stay challenged and prepare yourself for graduate school, the Honors College at ODU might be for you.
Tips for prospective students ODU's motto is Idea Fusion- with the diverse student body and so many fields to study on campus, the motto truly fits the school.

Categories Comments Greek Life Currently I am not a part of the Greek life but our school has an immense variety of sororities and fraternities that you can join. They also tend to throw parties that are on-campus (safer) to gain money for their organization.
Great for these types of students This school is great for students who enjoy being social, having a lot to do, and who enjoy making new, lifelong friends.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Do you love ice cream and cake mixed with a little football? Well ODU is perfect, at all home games we participate in the ice cream and cake song at 3rd quarter.
What to do for fun For fun, I usually hang out with friends around campus, enjoy our private beaches, and the multitude of on-campus activities ODU has to offer.
Tips for prospective students For those wishing to attend, I recommend that you learn what is most important to you. There are plenty of distractions at ODU because of the city in which it is located. Just remember that you are here to get your educations first, the partying can come later.
In three sentences Old Dominion University has an invigorating environment, which aims to provide activities and programs engaging to all that attend. Categories Comments Campus Safety Considering Norfolk is not exactly the safest area, the safety is wonderful. There are of course some accidents and problems occasionally. However, ODU has it's own police force as well as the Norfolk Police Department. It is necessary to swipe your ID to get into dorm buildings and the school offers locks, lights, etc. for off campus students. There is also options such as SafeRide, where you can get a ride around campus if it is late. The fire department is also located directly next to campus.
Greek Life I am not involved in Greek Life on campus and really do not know much about it. However, I know there are many fraternities and sororities at ODU and it is very popular.
Clubs and Activities There are also several clubs, pretty much anything you are interested in has a club. And if it doesn't, you can form one! I personally have joined many clubs and taken part in many activities that have led me to great successes.
Great for these types of students ODU does has a current acceptance rate of 74%. So they are not very picky on who they let in. The campus is very diverse, however, with students from all across the country, and world.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus DO NOT STEP ON THE SEAL. There is a superstition that if you step on the seal in the center of campus you will not graduate, at least not from ODU. People try to get rid of this curse by riding the lion. (I don't suggest trying this because it is very dangerous).
Bang for the buck I am an out of state student, so my tuition is much higher than most students. There are, however, so many opportunities I have already taken advantage of and benefited from in my freshman year. Therefore, I am very proud of myself and the decision to go to ODU.
What to do for fun There are an abundance of options for fun on campus. From the copious options of sports teams; both ODU teams, as well as, intramural teams. There is also something going on, especially on the weekends. The campus hosts and sponsors several events throughout the year such as Relay for Life, several 5k's, Water/Color Festival, Strength Contests, etc. There are also several clubs, pretty much anything you are interested in has a club. And if it doesn't, you can form one!
Food and Dining The on campus dining can be iffy at times. There are many fast food options such as Subway, Panda Express, Pizza Hut, Wing Street, etc. The other options that are mostly used by students with a meal plan are Raising Cane's, P.O.D, and Cafe 1201. There are a couple other cafeterias on campus but the food gets old quick.
Dorm Life If you live in one of the dorms in the quad you will be very happy. They are a little more pricey than the other typical freshman dorms, but they are much nicer. It is also safer and you meet more people than if you live off campus.
Academic Rigor The courses and extracurriculars offered at ODU are, for the most part, very helpful in building knowledge. They are challenging at times, but worth it. They force you to think critically and there are copious opportunities to build your resume.
Tips for prospective students Do as much research as you can to make sure this, or any, school has or is exactly what you're looking for. Read everything; emails, brochures, odu.edu, etc. Try to be figure out what you want to do in college, major wise especially. Be prepared and take it seriously.
In three sentences ODU has one of the most diverse student bodies in America. They encourage growth in their students on a both a personal and global level. There are a plethora of clubs and activities to partake in at ODU.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus safety is pretty good if you ask me. Every student is emailed and alerted of any incident that occurs on or around campus and campus police begin investigating immediately. It never takes them long to solve, catch and remove the problem.
