Categories Comments Great for these types of students OCC has a great tradition of fine athletes including baseball, volleyball, football, cheer, and more. I am an athlete here and just having a blast. Its a good film school from what I've heard. Its just a good community college just to get your AA and school overall.
Tips for prospective students Orange coast college is a great college to attend If you are living in California..But when you are an out of state student It is like $200 a credit/unit compared to California Residency $20 a credit/unit. Just get your homework done and don't party too much because you can easily loose focus of school work being around OCC. If you plan to join any school activities or clubs I suggest that you do because just like any college, its always a great thing to meet new people.
Bang for the buck Located in Southern California in Costa Mesa is OCC and yes it is worth living down here. But I did not give it a 5 star because their out of state tuition is ridicolous. I have had some Football teammates from FLorida not come back because of the Pricing of Living and School. Overall what Can people say, Its located in one of the nicest and richest place in America, the Orange County.
Am enjoying being here Its right next to Newport Beach/Huntington Beach and South Coast Plaza mall. Its located in a safe area with a good community atmosphere. The weather is just great warm all year long and no snow. You get to meet lots of new people and that is always a plus.
Am learning a lot Depending what you want to Major in or what your course is there are some teachers that are great and some that arent as great. I suggest you use ratemyprofessor.com before actually signing up for a class. Other than that most of the teachers hear at OCC seems to be great, but you just got to land on the right teacher.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Great for disciplined students that can create and keep their own schedule.
Tips for prospective students Park early. Sign up early. Classes fill pretty quick and it is hard to petition.
Bang for the buck Compared to UC's and Cal States for sure! But the price just went up from $20 to $26.
Am enjoying being here I am not involved on campus, but the environment is friendly. A lot of students smoke cigarettes.
Am learning a lot It really depends on the class you take and if you take it for credit or for units.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students This amazing school is a great fit for many different kinds of students. It is great for athletes as the teams there are very good and have high reputations. It is good for students who want to be involved as there are many, many different ways to be involved whether it is through clubs or student leadership or just being able to interact with people that you would not normally interact with. It is also great for photography and film students as the program there is one of the best in the nation. It is good for culinary arts students as the program is one of the best. Overall, it is good for just about anybody! Just remember that this amazing school is not only one of the best it is the top community college in California in addition to the second best in the United States!
Tips for prospective students Overall some tips for prospective students include: - Take advantge of the variety of classes offered - Explore classes for your major - Plan out the classes that you want ahead of time because the classes fill up really quickly - Ask teachers lots of questions...use the knowledge they have to offer
Bang for the buck I would say that if you truly pick classes that you know you will enjoy and if you make every effort to get anything and everything out of those classes then it is definately worth the money you pay. However, I do think that the prices are a little expensive. I would say that the most expensive things that you have to buy are the books. The books prices, in my opinion, are rediculuosly over priced as I have been able to find the same books in the same condition for a fraction of the price they are sold at the bookstore. But overall, I think that if you truly get as much as you can out of the classes then the prices will be worth it in the end.
Am enjoying being here I do enjoy the school a lot. This is because I have been able to take some pretty amazing classes and learn a lot from them. However, I feel that I could enjoy the school a lot more if I had the time to spend participating in all of the various clubs and activities that the school offers. From what I have heard these clubs and activities are very fun and the students who are in them become very active in the club and in the school. So if you are a person who loves to get involved this is definately a good college for you.
Am learning a lot I am definately learning a lot at this school. Because of the variety of classes that are offered I have been able to explore and expand my horizons and as a result I have learned some many useful things about so many different areas. In addition, the teachers and professors are amazing. They are always willing to help you if you have questions and they are always willing to meet with you outside of class in their office hours and most of the time not during their office hours as well. I have found all of the professors very helpful and encouraging as they truly exhibit teachers that want to see their students succeed.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Anybody looking to go to a university but either didn't do well in high school, isn't able to afford it financially at the moment, or just wants to get a better feel for what is to come should consider attending community college. No matter what discipline you plan to pursue, Orange Coast College is a fantastic place to attend for any person seeking to better themselves.
Tips for prospective students If you are out of high school, you do have to take into account that this is still a place of higher education, even if it is not a university. More is expected of you, and all the responsibility lies on your shoulders. Many classes are structured in a way where an absence can be very detrimental to your grade, and turning homework in late may not be an option. So realize that it is your choice to be here, and you shouldn't waste this opportunity. General advice would be to keep dates constantly in mind, such as financial aid deadlines and registration dates. Register for classes as early as possible! They fill up fast, and I've seen the number of petitioners outnumber the amount of people in the class itself. If you are driving, arrive early because finding parking can be a drag. Overall, be responsible. Do not half-ass your work, pay close attention, and if you feel you need help take your OWN time to visit your professor. Procrastination does work for some; it certainly has for me. But be aware of your capabilities, and if you're not sure of what you are able to manage, it is better to be safe than sorry. Give yourself more time than necessary to do assignments and study until you understand how you function best.
Bang for the buck Tuition has gone up to $26, and budget cuts have affected the amount of classes available, but OCC is not one of the best community colleges without reason. It is definitely worth every penny, and if you are worried about the cost chances are financial aid will have you covered. Textbooks are expensive, as anywhere, but using the library as a substitute to buying or renting the book is a viable (and free) alternative. Orange Coast College is an excellent place to get an associate's degree, get further training, or save money by covering the required general education classes before transferring to a university. The only downside for the price would be for out-of-state students, who have to pay nearly ten times as much. But for anybody residing within California, it is a stupendous deal.
Am enjoying being here If you're here to learn, this community college is great. For those who get satisfaction from acquiring knowledge, the experience will be greatly enjoyable. Teachers are very helpful and pleasant to converse with, and as long as you're willing to visit them during their office hours they will gladly aid you in whatever questions you may have. The campus itself is nicely kept and pleasing to walk through. This prior semester reconstruction was being done on the cafeteria building, so getting food on campus was a hassle, but this is only temporary. This college is also surrounded by many other restaurants and food joints within a fairly close distance, so running off campus to grab a bite is not a problem. There are clubs and extracurricular activities offered, though you obviously have to seek this out on your own time and hope the time slots fit into your schedule.
Am learning a lot The most fantastic aspect of college is to feel that one is actually learning; acquiring knowledge by grasping new concepts, exploring different viewpoints, and improving at critical thinking. While high school often left me dozing through class, Orange Coast College has proved to be an engrossing experience if one actually wishes to further the bounds of their mind. Every teacher I have had uses a slightly different style to teach, but all have been wonderful in getting their subject across. Difficulty across classes has varied, but that is to be expected. Yet despite the variety in how complex the subject matter may be across disciplines, each class was still able to stimulate me intellectually. The main complaint I have is that the Orange Coast College online database does not have a significant amount of journals and articles. Several times I had to go to other universities to have access to certain journals for research assignments. However, it is a community college after all, so having a massive database when it only offers associate's degrees would be rather unexpected.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students -Undecided Career -Still want to be home -Love the community -want something to do -prepare me for the 4 year university
Tips for prospective students Be sure to take your ACT test or SOAR test prior to application. Also apply online for classes ASAP the date they provide you with is the first day you can apply and that is the day you should only apply. Classes fill fast here so you got to be on top of things.
Bang for the buck I am taking 19 units right now and the cost for all the classes and books put together was around 800 dollars. Talk about a steal!
Am enjoying being here The campus staff is super friendly and are always advertising their services to students. The campus map is posted on every corner and the smell of freshly cooked food plumes in the air from the culinary department. The only downside to this is the cigarette smokers...they should be gone by next year though :D
Am learning a lot I am learning a ton! My desired career path is Accounting and this school knows how to prep. All my lower division classes will have been completed prior to transfer and I saved big! Only down side is the required classes for AA degree...a lot of could-live-without-teachers.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students willing to learn and take advantage of the many opportunities this colleges offers.
Tips for prospective students College is not any similar to High School!! So do all your homework and do well the first year of college. It should be the easiest semester. So if you don't want to stay behind do you best from the beginning so you don't have troubles trying to catch up the rhythm of studying well.
Bang for the buck Everyone knows that college books are not cheap at all. But it all depends on the class you take and the professor you have. The teacher might not even require a book, or lets you buy any edition of the book either in amazon.com or anywhere else is cheaper for you. But either way, the book at Orange Coast College are not expensive like in other Colleges or Universities that i have had the opportunity to compare with.
Am enjoying being here So many awesome people! the diversity of people and ethnicity is incredible. Also, the clubs available are so fun! I personally have joined three clubs, and all of them are very well organized and I have participated in many super fun outside of school activities! And even better, those clubs help you not only on meeting new people but also academically.
Am learning a lot This college is GREAT! The classes and specially professors are of a high quality. Just like in any other college, some teachers are hard, others a little bit more lenient. Therefore I suggest you to visit www.ratemyprofessor.com first to see the rate of your professor in mind. Either she/he is hard or easy, you will learn a lot! It is just really up to you and what you want to get out of it.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students OCC is the place to be if you want to increase your knowledge. This school fits just about any type of student, and as long as you are motivated, you will do well! :)
Tips for prospective students There's no need to think twice about attending OCC. There is a great sense of security and the people here are smart and generous. The weather is flawless, and the library is much nicer than any others nearby. For the convenience of the students, there are apartments located right across the street from campus. :)
Bang for the buck Annual tuition is nothing compared to that of a university, and for California residents, applying for the Board of Governors Fee Waiver makes it even easier. 7 courses in one semester cost me just under $800. Although costs have increased to $36 per unit (and may increase again), the education you get is a straight steal for the price you pay. And that's definitely a plus for me. :)
Am enjoying being here Orange Coast College offers something for everyone, as it is a very diverse campus with an active student body and a crazy load of classes. Whether you're looking to obtain an associate's degree or to transfer to a university, I would totally recommend this school because they will go above and beyond to help you reach your goals. The counselors are friendly and informative, and the school itself is a nice place to be studying, with newly constructed science laboratories and classrooms. Located just a few minutes form the beach, you just can't ask for a better place to learn.
Am learning a lot Orange Coast College provides its students with a vast number of courses, ranging from the most basic, to the extremely rigorous. It isn't hard to find a class that's both fun and challenging. In addition to academics, this school is also known for its fantastic performing arts program. There's no doubt that I learn something new everyday; and not only from the professors, but also from my friendly peers. Every student here is a hardworker and the professors are highly passionate about what they teach.

Categories Comments Campus Safety campus safety is constantly driving around making sure that the school is as safe as possible. also they are only a phone call away if you need a problem dealt with or need an escort to your car.
Greek Life there is no greek life at occ.
Clubs and Activities all of the clubs at this school are amazing, personally i am not a part of any of the clubs on campus because my sport takes up most of my time. however, i have heard nothing but great things about the clubs on campus!
Great for these types of students orange coast college is great for any type of student. the school has an amazing athletic program, hundreds of certificate programs, and some of the best professors around.
Bang for the buck even though tuition per unit has increased quite a bit you still can't beat the price. i would recommend any high school student who is worried about paying for college to consider orange coast because you get a phenomenal education for thousands of dollars less than a four year university.
What to do for fun orange coast college is only 4 miles away from the beautiful newport beach. also it is only a couple miles away from south coast plaza which is one of california's most incredible malls.
Food and Dining the food in the cafeteria is excellent. it is prepared by the very talented culinary students and if i could i would eat their everyday.
Dorm Life there are no dorms at occ for it is a two year college
Academic Rigor the work is fairly difficult, but you will definitely learn a great deal from these courses.
Tips for prospective students make sure to use all of the resources provided for you at the college, especially the student success center!
In three sentences orange coast college is in my opinion one of the best, highest caliber two year colleges around. the atmosphere is warm and inviting, making it a great environment to succeed in. everyone at orange coast from the counselors to professors push you and help you in every way to make sure you thrive academically.

Bang for the buck occ is truly cost efficient.

Dorm Life there are no dorms, but there are near by apartments.

In three sentences when i was going to attend occ i was not excited because i went in with a negative mind set, believing i would not get any classes, due to state budget cuts, but since the first day i attended i have been so thankful for the staff, especially the counselors, who have helped me get the classes that i need to transfer. occ is an amazing community college and they truly do go by their logo we will help you get there.

Categories Comments Campus Safety campus safety is great here. we have beautiful campus and campus safety takes care of it. we have a hotline for students to call if they ever need an escort or feel uncomfortable.
Greek Life we don't have a very popular greek life here, were only a community college.
Clubs and Activities our clubs and student involvement is huge here, there are so many clubs and teams to be apart of here. the students run everything here and it gives present and new students a good shot at leadership and involvement to help them find their place at a bigger campus when they move forward.
Bang for the buck education comes with a price, and here you are getting quality teaching and resources. free tutoring, an amazing library and all kinds of ways to help you succeed.
What to do for fun here at occ there are lots of clubs, groups, teams, and sports to be apart of. if you want to be apart of something here, its here or if you have new ideas then you can create a club or team for others to be apart of.
Food and Dining the student center on campus is one of the best new places on campus. it has just been remolded and is a great place to relax, re- nourish at a college student's price. they offer a variety of healthy foods and your favorite foods. all is prepared by occ's culinary course that they offer here at the college.
Dorm Life occ doesn't offer on campus living but they do offer a housing website where people who live close to the campus can offer their homes to students that need to be close to the school.
Academic Rigor occ is like a university, they treat their academics very seriously. they prepare you for the type of academic challenges you will face at a university.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck What's great about Orange Coast College is really it's diversity, you have a multitude of ethnicities: from Koreans to pacific islanders to Irish to German and so on. Different is what makes us unique, but also what brings us together. :)
What to do for fun There's shopping at South Coast Plaza, going to the movies at Metro Point, Hitting up the bar at pierce, Open Mic on fridays on campus, donating blood, playing in a basketball league at the rec center, or biking to the beach etc, etc.
Food and Dining Plenty of places to choose from. You're near the beach, there's ihop, norms, B & J's, Chick fil a, etc. etc.
Dorm Life There's no dorm life, but there are a lot of complexes near by, a roommate is advised.
Academic Rigor They want you to succeed, but you also have to do your part as a student to get there. The instructors are a great resource and there is a student success center, where students go to for help from tutors.
Tips for prospective students >Goodluck with parking the first two weeks of school. The only good thing about it is that it's free those first two weeks. >The teachers are great, some benefit you others work you to your potential. >human sexuality class is the best, not that much homework, but if there is it's quick and easy, but the best part is that it helps you on your test and the understanding of the lesson. This class is usually the one that fills up fast and few ever drop it.
In three sentences It's a great community college to get started right after high school. The staff is helpful and the students are diverse. Peaceful setting with a two-story library.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I see Campus Safety around all the time. Early mornings and even at late nights. Lots of lighting around and they have those phones where you can call campus safety and they will pick you up and drop you off at your car.
Great for these types of students Anyone willing to put in about 1 hour of study/homework a day (including weekends), will do very well. Teachers are patient and can provide you with one-on-one time if needed, not like Universities.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Only unusual thing I've noticed is the fact that all your classes will be spread out in random locations. Example: My Business Calculus class is located in the Bio Science building.
Bang for the buck Receiving an education doesn't have a price tag for me, however, the education you receive from a community college is on par with a Cal State University (I was a former Cal State Fullerton student). Therefore, best bang for the buck in my opinion.
What to do for fun There are tons of sporting events throughout the year. From football, soccer, baseball, etc...
Food and Dining Food is average. They have their own cafeteria, but wish they had some name brand fast food spots on campus.
Dorm Life No dorms here that I know of. However, tons and tons of apartment complexes surround this campus.
Academic Rigor Toughest class for me was Business Calculus. Everything else was fairly easy. Some classes like Micro Econ give you just enough of a workload to keep you challenged. Just study 1-5 hours a week total, and you will do very well here.
Tips for prospective students If you want a school that has the relaxed mentality, then this is a good school for you. But with any college, community college or university, you HAVE to attend class and do the homework. If you don't, you will have a difficult time succeeding.
In three sentences The classes and teachers are fairly easy, as long as you attend class and do the required homework/reading. And the free on campus tutoring is GOLD! The campus is clean. People are nice. One downside is the limited parking.

Categories Comments What to do for fun In southern California there is a ton to do from the beach to amusement parks or a nice walk in the park or bike ride.
Food and Dining Great food in the cafeteria as well as some other walk up ordering options. Good options for vegetarians or pescatarians and reasonable prices. The culinary dept makes a few different specials for the cafeteria to choose from.
Dorm Life It's a community college so while I am pretty sure there are placed for students to live, I don't think it's actual dorms.
Academic Rigor The classes are somewhat difficult but nothing too crazy. As long as you put the effort in and study and do HW you will be fine. I am positive it is not as intense as university learning.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you go in to see counselors with questions prepared as many times they don't really give you the information you need unless you know what to ask. That seems to be for any schools that I've had experience with.
In three sentences The majority of the teachers are so amazing and helpful. They offer all sorts of classes for transfer or certificate programs. The campus us nice and they are continuously renovating.

Clubs and Activities They have so many clubs, from academic, social, cultural and so much more. Definitely join clubs you might be interested, you will love it ad much I did!
Great for these types of students OCC is great for almost everyone. OCC has a such a diverse groups with different age and background. School contains mixed number of traditional and non-trandituonal students.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus It is located in Costa Mesa! There are good combinarions of different groups, Asians, Whites and lots of international students with different cultural background.
Bang for the buck I love OCC and I am one of transfering students to UCLA from OCC!
What to do for fun Go grab some coffee and lie on the OCC quad. At most times. the weather there is great!
Food and Dining Their cafeteria is okay, but not the best. But, OCC has several snack shops, carts, and Starbucks on the campus which are pretty good and convenient.
Dorm Life Unfortunately, they do not offer a dorm.
Academic Rigor They have a reasonably and fairly high quality of classes that helps to prepare for 4-years university.
Tips for prospective students Take an advantage of resources. Our counselors, various contract with 4-years university, and leadership opportunities. Get involved with your professor, fellowmates, counselors! It will all worth it!
In three sentences I definitely recommend OCC to attend. It is a great school with many different programs that will help students significally with their academic. Not only that, their extra curricular is on top notch!

Categories Comments What to do for fun what I do for fun is go to the gym five times a week. I like to walk my dog to the parks and beach. I volunteer to help a tennis coach while he coaches his students. I study as much as I can to be ahead. I go swimming and try and stay fit and eat healthy. I like to bake cakes and cook for my family and friends.
Food and Dining the cafe is always filled with students studying eating and catching up on socially. the cafe has a fast staff and the food is reasonably priced which is great for college students and the service is fast. Out in front of the Cafe is an small dinning area that cooks on a BBQ. the food is amazing and the air fills with the aroma.
Dorm Life this college does not have dorms.
Academic Rigor I really loved this college campus. It is beautiful and with amazing facilities. This campus is clean and alive with student activities. The professors I took were caring and always made time to help me with my problems. The campus has many parking options to avoid traffic and gives you the option to park near your classes.
Tips for prospective students For students that will be attending Orange Coast College I recommend to first set up a counseling appointment with any counselor. The counselor help direct you on the right track and answer all your questions. They helped me take the right courses and let me know of classes that students really enjoyed.
In three sentences The professors are always willing to help out their students and care about their success. Orange Coast College is a melting pot of different people and cultures making it unique and the students outgoing and friendly. The Watson hall is a beautiful four story building that provides many student services even though they are short on staff due to state budget cuts, their is always someone friendly yo help you.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are phones around campus to call campus security, and lots of campus security always walking around and driving around. You can feel safe walking back to your car at night because there are security around at all times.
Clubs and Activities There are plenty of clubs on campus but I cannot accurately rate them, because I don't know what is all available and how good they are. I was part of the architecture club and this was a very good club. They had lots of event and activities that you participated in that would be great for your portfolio for when you transfer.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are a lot of clubs on campus that you can get involved in. Throughout the year too, you will see events happening in the quad, from, green planet day to transfer day.
Bang for the buck The prices per unit to go to Orange Coast College have raised since when I first started, but you are still saving a lot more money than if you were to go to a four year university. This is a great school to go to if you want to get all your general education done without spending and arm and a leg. Not to mention by the time you are done will all your schooling, you will save yourself probably 30-50 thousand dollars in student loans by getting your GE done at a Junior College.
What to do for fun The beach is about a 10 minute drive from the school. You can surf, walk on the boardwalk, shop, eat, or just enjoy laying out on the sand. If you are 21+, the nightlife is probably one of the better places to be in Orange County. There are lots of fun bars and clubs in a close vicinity. If you like to snowboard as well, you can carpool or drive yourself to the mountains during the winter about one hour to an hour and a half away. There is also Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm, amusement parks, that are located in Orange County. There is lots of great shopping places close by such as South Coast Plaza, Irvine Spectrum or Fashion Island.
Food and Dining Orange Coast College is located in Costa Mesa in Orange County. It is centrally located and there are many places that are within 2-10 minute driving distance to many restaurants, cafes and fast food. Some of my favorite places to eat in Orange Country are within a 5 mile radius from the school.
Dorm Life There is no dorm life at Orange Coast College. This is a junior college. If you do need help in living in the area, they do have listings of places to rent or students that are looking for roommates near the area.
Academic Rigor The academic rigor at Orange Coast College varies. Some professors are a lot more lenient and wont be as hard, but there are also a lot of great professors that teach at a university level. This classes tend to be a lot more rigorous, and need a lot more time and devotion. But, this will really help prepare you for classes when you transfer to a four year.
Tips for prospective students Due to budget cuts in California schools, make sure you register for classes on you exact date and time. You will want to try and pick your classes as soon as possible, because classes fill up quick. If you need help in classes but cant afford a tutor make sure you use the student center for quick questions about your homework or readings, or even schedule a free tutor lesson to get one on one help.
In three sentences Orange Coast College has many great professors that teach the material very well and prepare you for your transfer to a 4-year university. The campus is very large with many amenities that makes you feel like you are not in a junior college but a university. Orange Coast College offers many courses that can help you get started in almost any field you want, like, architecture, interior design, business, aircraft, etc.

Food and Dining They do have a great cafeteria with awesome food at reasonable prices.
Academic Rigor I haven't started yet
Tips for prospective students If you are told an answer you don't like, or you feel isn't true, ask someone else. The people that work there are mostly students themselves and don't have the answers. Don't give up if you can't get into a class. Try any class you can get so you will have an earlier registration date the following semester
In three sentences A Beautiful Campus with friendly, though uninformed and not very knowledgeable in the areas they work. Very Difficult to get a class due to there being too many students for the amount of classes they offer.

Bang for the buck I thought I'd hate community college, but OCC feels more like a university. There are so many things to do here and there are so many opportunities! You save so much money going to community college, but going to OCC won't make you feel like you are missing out on a real college experience.
What to do for fun There's an aquarium to see in the Lewis Center which is pretty cool to have on campus. The art center is always decorated beautifully. There's a park behind the horticulture area with benches and a small pond you could have a picnic in! The squirrels are really friendly and will take food right out of your hand if you are brave enough to try it!
Food and Dining OCC food is fantastic! The culinary students make most of the items in the cafeteria! There's a huge variety of food on campus as well. You can eat in the cafeteria, head to the starbucks, drop by the hotdog cart, grab a snack at the various coffee carts or eat at the grill and the grove.
Academic Rigor It all depends on your major and what classes you are required to take, but college isn't easy. If you work hard and utilize the student success center for classes you are having trouble with, there shouldn't be any problems!
Tips for prospective students Read ratemyprofessor reviews, while most of the faculty members are amazing individuals, there are some bad apples. The hot dog cart sells hot dogs for $1.50 and there's no wait time for them. Wifi on campus disappears in some buildings.. plan accordingly.
In three sentences The best community college experience you could ever ask for. The teachers are fantastic, the campus is beautiful, the vibe is so SoCal. Orange Coast College makes community college not only bearable, but fun and exciting.

Categories Comments What to do for fun A lot of people hang out in the student center, where all the food is, but because it is a comunity college there isn't much going on around campus.
Food and Dining Normally I bring my own lunch to school, but the few times I've bought campus food, it has exceeded my expectations, and it is relatively cheap. Their food is quite good.
Dorm Life OCC doesn't have any dorms.
Academic Rigor Most of the professors on campus are willing to go the extra mile and make sure that students are getting the help they need. Most of them have been with the school for a few decades, and they know what they are doing.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I've heard of the occasional car being broken into; however, I always feel pretty safe walking around campus.
Clubs and Activities There are so many different clubs and each provides distinct opportunities and activities to participate in.
Bang for the buck All in all, OCC is a great school and is one of the best community colleges around. The campus is huge, the classes are great, and most of the faculty is helpful. The only reason I took away a star is because it's so tough to get into classes because of budget cuts.
What to do for fun There's always a fun event going on in or around campus! Between the swap meets, the beach nearby, and the OC Fair Grounds, there is always something to do.
Food and Dining For the price of the food, it's actually pretty good. They also have a wide variety of choices, as well.
Dorm Life This school doesn't have actual dorms, but they do provide you with contact information of students who need roommates.
Academic Rigor Obviously, it depends on the class. The honors classes have more work and the science courses are hard core, but the general education courses are fairly easy.

Categories Comments Campus Safety When I was a student at the university level, there were suicides, potheads... there was even a shooting there recently! But at Orange Coast College, things were quiet. If anything, the campus is so safe, it might turn off a student looking for parties and forays.
Greek Life I didn't participate in any OCC Greek Life.
Clubs and Activities Students and faculty go out of their way to establish clubs and activities for all interests. In my case, I found a strong writing community here, including a Novel Workshop. You may have to ask around to find the niche that's right for you, though.
Great for these types of students If you're interested in studying psychology, anthropology, or another social science, the coursework available at Orange Coast College is fantastic. Even if you're pursuing another major - like I did - I recommend taking general education options in these fields.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Every Orange Coast College student needs to experience the Jamba Juice stand. It's a magic place for last-minute refreshments during midterms and finals. It sounds mundane, but if you bring it up at class, students will have something to say.
Bang for the buck Community colleges are affordable. Yet don't think you're getting skimped on your education; you will receive the same quality you'd find at a university. My Eastern Thoughts professor, as an example, is a part-time professor at OCC and full-time at CSUF.
What to do for fun Orange Coast College is aptly named for its close vicinity to the ocean. There's also a newly designed student recreation center. If you can't find something fun to do at these locations, consider joining one of OCC's clubs; other students will point you in the right direction.
Food and Dining The student center, coffee and Jamba Juice stands, and surrounding food places are fantastic.
Dorm Life I didn't live in the apartments surrounding the campus. I happily commuted from Laguna Hills and Anaheim.
Academic Rigor Orange Coast College's professors are going to kick your butt! I found the classes more intensive than similar coursework I signed up for at Cal State University, Fullerton. Expect a university-level curriculum from this community college district.
Tips for prospective students If you live in the Orange County region, and you're graduating from high school, I could not recommend a better community college than Orange Coast - even if that means a 30-minute commute. Similarly, if you're an adult looking for post-secondary education to enrich your life, Orange Coast College is the place to be. The professors are there to help you aspire in whatever goals you may have.
In three sentences I attended Orange Coast College for the first three years of my undergraduate degree. After transferring to Cal State Fullerton, earning my B.A. in English, and working as a copywriter and editor for three years, I returned to the Coastline College District (Orange Coast and Golden West) to prepare myself for M.F.A. in Creative Writing applications. Orange Coast College's quality of education never ceases to amaze me, and this is coming from the perspective of a 17-year-old undergrad and a 27-year old grad applicant.

Categories Comments Campus Safety OCC has its own security force and keeps the campus pretty safe.
Clubs and Activities Every interest that you have is expressed in a club on campus.
Great for these types of students Great for students who do not know what major they want to get into, great for those who want the real OC experience, and great for those who want to save money.
Bang for the buck Great option to get the best education for a fraction of the cost.
What to do for fun The beach is a mere 10-15 minutes away from campus. South Coast Plaza is 5 minutes away from OCC. Down the 405 in Irvine there is the Irvine Spectrum, great for dining and shopping. The Block at Orange is another great shopping plaza as well.
Food and Dining There is one main cafeteria on campus (Student Center) that serves above average food at affordable prices. There also some smaller eateries around campus worth looking into.
Dorm Life Currently there are no dorms on campus (since it is a commuter school), however there are intensive talks that OCC is going to soon invest in campus housing.
Academic Rigor OCC is not too easy and not too hard. The classes are made to fit most students' academic abilities but the professors are nothing but mediocre!
Tips for prospective students Look up classes you are interested in and then head over to ratemyprofessor.com to see the inside scoop of the professor for that class.
In three sentences Orange Coast college is the perfect campus for students coming out of high school who do not know what major they want to get into. OCC is an affordable option for students and is a great way to save money in the long run. OCC also has some of the finest professors in the country who want their students to succeed and will help their students achieve success!

Categories Comments Campus Safety Safety is very present, there are Security checkpoints with alarms throughout the campus, as well as Security officers that stroll the hallways and parking lots constantly.
Clubs and Activities There is a large variety of clubs available.
Great for these types of students Great for working students, people trying to further their careers, and just for those that want to take more educational classes.
Bang for the buck It is getting more expensive for the average Community College student due to state budget cuts and rising University costs that had led to an influx of new students which leads to a limited amount of availability of open classes, so it can be difficult to get into classes. Overall I think the price is decent to the resources made available.
What to do for fun There are games to go to, Theater performances, and other student activities funded by student clubs.
Food and Dining There is a cafeteria and small vendors throughout the campus, as well as snack bars and even a grill station on campus so there is an assortment of food available. The food is good, the culinary students make dishes on Fridays, and there is a Starbucks on campus.
Dorm Life Since it is a Community College there is no definite dorm life, but there is help available to students looking for living accommodations.
Academic Rigor Academically speaking, it all depends on you as a student and what level of studying you do. There are Honors classes if that interests you.
Tips for prospective students Be sure to have your Registration checklist completed before you are ready to register for the upcoming semesters. Research the classes and professors you want to take to get an idea of the structure of the class and if it fits with your work/study habits schedule. It is getting harder for students to get into the classes they need so plan ahead and make sure that you have back-up classes in case the class you wanted is closed. Once you are in the class, study and try not to fall behind. Use the tutoring and ask your professor for any help.
In three sentences OCC is a great transfer and certificate career college for anyone and everyone who wishes to further their academic career. The school itself is easy to access, there are a broad range of classes available, and the professors overall are great at relating to their students in the classroom. There are also plenty of student services available to help with the students' personal and educational needs and questions throughout the campus.

It's doesn't have the best instructors overall but it's up to one to excel in class and to do all that is necessary to pass. Great for these types of students For students who have not yet figured out what career they want to follow, this college gives you an opportunity to explore your interests.
What to do for fun Join clubs on campus!
Academic Rigor Some teachers can be very tough.
Tips for prospective students ALWAYS plan ahead. Getting classes is competitive, so make sure you're choosing the right class and doing well because as hard as it is to find all the classes you'll need to transfer or earn a degree, it'll be 10 times as hard to re-take classes.
In three sentences Orange Coast College is an amazing school filled with opportunities and chances. Out of all the schools I have attended, I have never seen so many committed and motivated students before. The number of hard-working, intelligent students encourage me to become motivated also.

Greek Life Unsure.

What to do for fun Get involved in the campus by joining a club.
Food and Dining The cafeteria offers healthy choices like soup, veggies and sandwiches.
Dorm Life No dorms.
Academic Rigor The teachers demand involvement and knowledge from students but they make the classes engaging, so you will always learn!
Tips for prospective students The teachers at Orange Coast College are knowledgeable and passionate about their class subject. Make sure to see a counselor and get a plan outline for all the classes you will need to take.
In three sentences Orange Coast College is a great community college which offers a variety of classes and certificate programs. Thanks to Orange Coast College, I feel well prepared to transfer to a four year university.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Very safe. Lots of Campus Safety staff, vehicles, and buildings. They also do drills, and teaches inform you that they would pretty much risk their own lives to save yours in the event of an emergency. Also very comforting to see the emergency phones, panic buttons, and alarmed exits everywhere.
Bang for the buck OH MOST DEF. Financial aid is also available.
What to do for fun Well this depends on what you like to do! I guess ON campus there aren't really any fun things that don't involve school. But it you're a jock or a nerd there is a gym, lots of sports fields, and a library and a computer lab.
Food and Dining I haven't really eaten a lot of the foods on campus, but what IS awesome is that they're are a lot of different options on campus. There is a Starbucks, a hotdog stand, another coffee stand, a cafeteria, loads of vending machines (also containing meals--not just snacks!), and a couple kiosk-like places.
Dorm Life They're aren't any dorms...yet! They decided to put some in with the money from the proposition that passed! Yay! Also they're a lot of housing options available all around the city area surrounding OCC, such as apartments, and single rooms.
Academic Rigor It depends. Some classes are REALLY easy. You can check them based on the specific teacher at RateMyProffessor.com. However, if you want a challenge, take an honors course...they're brutal!
Tips for prospective students Don't be fooled that it is just a community college because it is really the best one out there! Register as early as possible because classes fill up FAST. Get a parking permit and always get to school as early as possible. Get to know your teachers, they are really helpful and caring. Always sit up front and do your best on every assignment...it pays off! Take advantage of campus resources, such as the library, transfer center, career center, student success center, and counseling. Get involved in clubs and on-campus activities, and make as many new friends as possible!
In three sentences OCC is the best, and highly accredited community college in the nation! It offers great classes, has amazing teacher, and a lovely campus. I recommend this college as number 1!

Academic Rigor The professors are extremely helpful and want their students to succeed.
Tips for prospective students Plan ahead what classes you are going to take before registering. Try and meet with a counselor before. Utilize at resources available to you that are offered.
In three sentences I love the campus because of its really open layout. Professors are incredibly helpful. Not as hard to get classes as it is at other community colleges.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I haven't seen anything that would make me believe that there is an issue with safety. However, there are times where somethings tend to get stolen. However, there is always campus security nearby. The telephone is also in reach.
Clubs and Activities There is so much you can do! There are many events year-round that you can attend to and many different clubs that you can be a part of!
Great for these types of students For people that are able to stand a lecture and not get bored so easily. Depending on the professor, the class will be straight forward or they will add a twist to it.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is a garden that is absolutely blissful. Hardly anyone is there and you can relax and study there. I've seen people sleep there!
Bang for the buck The books are expensive as always with any college. However, don't sell the book back to the bookstore! It is not worth the money they give you back. Sell it online and you will receive more of your money's worth for the book. A $170 book and they will give you $15 dollars back, regardless if it's new or used.
What to do for fun There is a game room where you can hang out with your friends that is nearby the cafeteria. You can also go to events that the school has to offer like the shows in the Theater!
Food and Dining The food is adequate. The price might not be so great but there's other places to go on campus that will satisfy your hunger. However, the variety is amazing.
Dorm Life The dorms are decent. The only thing that might make you cringe is the price.
Academic Rigor Most professors will help you if you ask for it! Make sure you have the syllabus at all time. It has everything you will need in order to be successful in that class. Some professors even wrote the book that you need for the class.
Tips for prospective students Be early for classes because parking is hectic! Remember to find your registration time. To be safe, make sure you are online before your registration opens! The classes that you want might be full but if you are on time with your registration, you'll get the classes you want.
In three sentences Orange Coast College has a great atmosphere. The resources available to the students are amazing! A great school if you plan to transfer to a 4-year school

Tips for prospective students Go to a walk in appointment with a counselor before you sign up for your first semester classes.
In three sentences I believe this school is great for students who cannot pay to go straight to a four year university. However, if you know your major and can take out student loans, I suggest avoiding this college as much as possible. It is so easy to get stuck at this school for four years.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Violent crimes are pretty low, parked vehicle security is probably only problem on campus which is still very rare.
Greek Life Very poor unfortunately.
Clubs and Activities So many clubs, probably easily 30+. Theres Honor society, volunteer clubs like Circle K, gamer clubs, science clubs, art, and theater. Guarantee whatever you're interested in, someone has already started a club for it.
Great for these types of students Students that want to transfer out to one of Californias state or UC schools.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus So ya we have a dinosaur on campus. Like a real dinosaur skeleton just randomly displayed in one of the buildings. It's actually pretty cool if you go and check it out.
Bang for the buck Tuition is pretty cheap, considering other schools. The school also has a ton of student services for all students and others just for certain students. What I mean by that is for example, if you wanted to use the gym you'd have to be enrolled in some athletics course, or if you wanted access to the schools film library to rent from you'd have to be enrolled in the film courses.
What to do for fun Clubs clubs clubs. On school clubs that is. The school has a massive amount of student run available clubs. Outside of school. There is a lot to do around, including street fairs in neighboring cities. There's the beach and also Disneyland and knotts berry farm for those with a bigger budget. Heading up to Los Angeles on a weekend can make for a great day trip, whether you're visiting Hollywood, Santa Monica, or Venice. For those into hiking and camping, there are spots all around, some as close as 30 minutes drive or others merely a couple hours drive, very convenient for the outdoor enthusiast.
Food and Dining The food is great for reasonable prices. The main dining hall is cooked by students so quality can occasionally change drastically. Though standards such as Pizza or burgers are always a tasty safe bet. Most of the cooked food is freshly made, the only thing i've seen sit under a heat light is the pizza, but even that generally is rotated out fairly regularly.
Dorm Life Dorm life is more just off campus apartments. They're clean with access to laundry and located within walking distance of campus.
Academic Rigor Not much at all is handed to you in the classroom. Professors work on challenging your brain and making you think outside the box in order to prove you deserve that above average grade
Tips for prospective students Always meet with your teachers during office hours. For students trying to transfer out, don't rely on the councilors but instead check the classes you're taking with a representative from the school you wish to transfer too
In three sentences Orange Coast College is a wonderful school with a beautiful campus. Having a diverse range of students that come from all over the world, you're able to meet and make friends with new people that are not only from outside your state but from exotic corners across the globe.

Greek Life I have no answer.
Clubs and Activities I'm currently part of the secular club and part of the volunteer team from the school's student government. The school is very engaging and easy to get involved in.
Great for these types of students The school is great for international students. I've met so many people from all parts of the world.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The school is actually very open minded. As far as clubs go, there's a secular club which deals with Atheism, the minorities in religion. The school also has a child center that acts like a day care. And usually once a semester, during science day, you will be able to see all the kids marching around and learning about science.
What to do for fun There lots of clubs and school events to arose college students. The school also offers connections for internships, The school is very easy to get involved in.
Food and Dining The food quality is very diverse at the school, lots of vegetarian food!
Dorm Life I don't live on the doors, however, I've seen some of the dorms and it looks peaceful.
Academic Rigor Being out of school for 3 years, I've struggled when I first entered the school. However, with the help available at the school, I was able to improve and catch up with my learning. Even then, a lot of the professors challenge you by creating an environment for one to critically think about specific ideas. Much of the classes that I took were difficult, but engaging none the less.
Tips for prospective students The school offers workshops for engaging students, and not only that, but the school also have school promotes important events for the local community.

Dorm Life Lived off campus, no dorms available.
Academic Rigor Depends on the professor. Always check ratemyprofessor.com

In three sentences I have had an overall good experience at Orange Coast College. The relatively inexpensiveness of attending vs a Cal State or University makes it so much easier to be able to attend the first few years of college. Although the classes are full and waitlisting is not my favorite I enjoyed my overall experience here.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Orange Coast College is in Costa Mesa, California and this part of Costa Mesa is very safe. The surrounding area is upper middle class, if not upper class.
Clubs and Activities There are many clubs. There is a club for pretty much anyone. Also you can create your own club.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus One unusual location is the welding and aircraft area which has many old planes and odd looking machinery. Another unusual area is the Ornamental Horticulture area which has many interesting plants and such.
Bang for the buck I am comparing the price to a four year college or university. The price is $46 per unit which is extremely affordable. One year, with books and carrying an average 15 unit load, costs around $2000.
What to do for fun The theater hold plays, musicals, and concerts. There is also a beautiful gym, tennis courts, track, and it is near the shopping mall South Coast Plaza/Metro Point and the Orange County Fairgrounds.
Food and Dining The food court is excellent and affordable with food choices such as: pizza, pho, salad bar, Mexican food, sandwiches, hamburgers, bowls, and much more. Also there is a Starbucks on campus which is a nice plus.
Academic Rigor This depends on the teacher, but I haven't had an experience which was extremely hard or extremely easy. Obviously harder classes such as Chemistry 180 and Calculus 3 will be harder than Geography 100 and English 101. The academic rigor is appropriate for all the classes I have had. By no means is everything easy, but is not unbearable at all.
Tips for prospective students Classes can become full very quickly. Do not give up trying to get into classes and utilize the waitlist system. When you are on the waitlist for a class check your student email EVERY DAY. I have had the unfortunate experience of being dropped twice from classes I got into because I didn't check my email often enough. Even if the waitlist is full, trying petitioning classes by going on the first day, even first two weeks to see if the teacher will add you into the class. Some teachers will let many people in and some won't, It all depends on the teacher.
In three sentences Orange Coast College has been a great place to go to school because they offer excellent two year degree and certificate programs. Also because the cost is very inexpensive, roughly $2000 per year including books(averaging 15 units per semester). I would give OCC a 9 out of 10.
